The devRant Podcast is finally here!! We're happy to announce the release of episode #0 - featuring Andy Hunt (known for The Pragmatic Programmer, rubber duck debugging, DRY, and much more). We can't thank Andy enough for agreeing to be on our first podcast episode and it was so enjoyable to interview him.
We also want to give a huge thanks to our two devRant users who helped us out and came on to talk about their rants - @silhoutte and @sway. We also greatly appreciate all of the questions that were submitted by community members. We really wanted to ask all of them since there were a lot of good ones, but we had to narrow it down a little as Andy was already kind enough to go over the 20 minutes we had originally asked for. This episode features questions from @casanovanoir, @fatlard1993, and @3K-Vengeance.
You can get all the links to the podcast here: https://devrant.io/podcasts/... (available on iTunes, Google Play, and we've provided the raw mp3).
If you'd like to see it on any other platforms in the future, please let us know. And like always, feedback is appreciated since we're new to this and still learning our way when it comes to podcasting. If you enjoy the show, please rate it to help us out :)
Thanks everyone!31 -
Today I realized an interesting thing about social media I use:
Twitter: using since 20.06.2016, likes from J.Dorsey: 0
Facebook: using since 21.11.2010, likes from M.Zuckerberg: 0
Vk.com: using since 24.10.2008, likes from P.Durov: 0
devRant: using since last Sunday, likes from @dfox : 1
Didn't notice this initially because I'm new to devRant, but today I decided to visit the About page. Then I looked at my notifications. Then once again the About page. *a lightbulb appears* xD19 -
Issue 0 of devRant Comics! Based on the epic rant by @cdrice (https://devrant.com/rants/451202/) Let me know what you think!24
-
This is the expected Binary ++ post from me :P
So, today I go to devRant and see 1's and 0's as my ++'s. I assume it might be a bug, but nope. Turns out it's one of the neat ways of meeting April Fools :)
Thanks to whoever had the idea. It genuinely made me smile.6 -
"devRant has changed" "I'm so fed up with this site" "Its a bunch of hate and memes, it was so much better before"
A rebuttal.
devRant is approximately the same as it was when it was just a newborn. Remember the days of semicolon jokes being unironically funny?
Look at the top rants of all time, for fucks sake. #2 ever is:
"A different error message! Finally some progress!"
Posted three years ago. That's the second most upvoted rant in history (Remember, this was a "rant" because the joke/meme category didn't exist back then), it made it's way into the app store screenshots, and was a welcome post.
Now imagine that posted today. It would probably go over okay, in fairness, but it's certainly at risk of any number of pretentious pricks complaining about how this is "devRANT not 4chan" or how they had seen the joke before and it's a shitty repost.
And sure, the repost bullshit is fair. I'm not saying that all the reposts are good content. What I'm saying is devRant has always been full of reposts - they just weren't reposts in the early days. The quality of content is the same.
There's also the common misconception that your posts need to be directly related to tech to post on devRant. This is a myth propagated by 0 IQ heathens that don't read any further than the name of the application. Your posts can be anything that isn't prohibited, like porn, spam, and, importantly, politics (commonly overlooked rule)
"All the memes are just too much". Oh you poor fucking baby, let me pour you a healthy serving of pity juice. First of all, you can turn off the memes category, and while they will still find their way to your feed, the concentration will be much lower and it will once again be bearable for your pitiful, weak little soul. Do you seriously get annoyed that severely by shitty posts that you need to leave the app altogether, or do you just want the attention of being a "cool hipster that hates on xyz"?
"This place is just filled with hate! Why can't you just respect xyz technology, it isn't actually that bad!"
This is probably the most stupid fucking thing you could possibly ejaculate from your fingers into whatever device you are using to type. Welcome to devRant, we hate on shit. That's at our core. No, xyz technology ISN'T actually that bad, you're correct. But we're here to tear it apart because it probably has frustrated us in the past. I fucking hate JS because it was my first language and it confused the shit out of me. JS is a great language. But I still talk shit about it, and that's what we're here to do.
Like seriously, I know a lot of people post stuff they're proud of here, and then they're met with "Would be great if you didn't use xyz tech", and that hurts, but holy shit, this is devRant. If you're sensitive to criticism, or even just straight up being made fun of, don't post shit that you're proud of. You won't have a good time. It's just not what we do here.
Quick interlude before the conclusion, "My girlfriend dumped me after I named a class after her. She felt I treated her like an object." is also on the first page of all-time most popular posts.
In conclusion, devRant has not changed. Reposts have been a nuisance since day 0, and just because reposts look different these days doesn't mean the quality of content has decreased in any manner. The two main sources of your frustration are the volume of low-quality posts (Mind you, not the concentration of them, but the volume of them) and your own prejudices about the platform. You're looking back with rose-tinted glasses.
Here are some tips for a more enjoyable experience:
-Make sure you have the "Hide reposts" setting ENABLED in settings. Any posts marked as repost will be hidden in your feed, pulling down the concentration of low-quality posts.
-Keep to the algo sorting method. Obviously, algo is a bot, and there's still gonna be some shit content in there anyways, but if you're in recent, you are absolutely guaranteed to see low-quality posts. It's unfiltered.
-Keep in mind that what you consider a "quality" post is not what others consider a "quality" post. Just because you don't like memes doesn't mean memes are poor content. There are people here who have never seen the bobby tables comic. And they deserve the same experience we got when discovering dev humor.
-Don't be a prick. And if you cannot help yourself, leave. Ironically, you're making the site worse by complaining about how bad the site is. You can always come back if you aren't a prick anymore. And you can leave permanently if you choose as well.
-Downvote and move on. You're not doing anything but making yourself more aggravated by leaving a shitty comment about how shitty the shitty post is.
-Think critically. Obviously optional, and I know not many people like to use their brain when a phone is suspended between their hands, but if you want a better experience, remember to use your head and not to lose it.21 -
Hello Monday:
0.Arrive late due to traffic.(Apparently a car hit a cow crossing the road)
1. Try upgrading php5 to php7 and break stuff in the process and waste 2 hours fixing things.(Poor connection so ssh sessions hung occasionally)
2.PHP fixed,open Gmail and get over 100 emails from clients about the server being down(because of (0)).Ignore all.Find a snaglist of over 20 TODOs.
3.Open Android Studio, update to 2.3 and everything becomes broken.Each time i open it ,it crashes and i have to "Report to Google"
4.Spend the next 1 hour reinstalling AS.It finally works.
5.Open Project and the libraries are broken.Spend another hour upgrading build tools.
6.Leave SDK to update and decide to check my Google Cloud console.$50 bill pending.Shit.
7.Try XCode. Remember the project is still in Swift 2 and I have to upgrade it(Would take eternity).Immediately closes xcode.
8.Gives up on life and decides to log into Devrant.4 -
At the end of our first podcast (https://devrant.io/podcasts/...) we gave a hint about the featured guest on our second episode. Now, it's time to announce this guest!
For the next episode of The devRant Podcast, we're fortunate enough to welcome David Heinemeier Hansson, also commonly known as DHH!! (http://david.heinemeierhansson.com/) David is the creator of Ruby on Rails and founder/CTO of Basecamp/37signals (project management tool), and a best-selling author know for titles like "Rework." He also drives race cars. We're extremely excited that we'll have the change to interview him as our second featured guest.
Like last time, it's time to take questions from the devRant community! If you have a question you'd like us to ask David, please add it as a comment on this rant or you can email me (david@devrant.io). Thanks everyone!6 -
devRant UWP client
3 years, 65 updates, 1.507 commits.
3 users donated a total of €16.97 (~€10.91 after Microsoft's fee), not enough for a payout, so I would say €0.
But it was still worth it, awesome community.9 -
Hi, my name is Juan, I'm 17 years old. I started programming when I was 12 years old (I started with Visual Basic 6) and I'm from Venezuela. A friend, named Javier, recommended DevRant, and I think it's a fantastic idea. I'm an inveterate lover of UNIX and all its variants, and of course, also of C/C++. I have so many projects in mind for the gamedev, but emptiness eats me and I can't develop them, it's pathetic.
#include <iostream>
int main() {
std::cout << "Hello, devRant\n";

The three indicators you have spent to much time on devRant while being on the toilet:
0: You reached the post from the last day.

2: You forgor whether you have to wipe your ass or not.2 -
My morning routine:

7.48 - open devRant
8.08 - realize how long I've been eating breakfast and write a short post about it
8.19 - hopefully I'll get out in time for the bus leaving by then.
8.42 - arrive 42 minutes late to work8 -

You guys made my whole day for the first time since I joined. (yes all of you!)
1) I had a 'fight' with a guy I'm making a startup with. Had to explain some of the story of my life, just to clarify that I'm not evil or generally unwilling to understand - regarding me, having the need to keep using practices
2) I've found that a whole niche-community of people seems to ignore the rest of the community and won't tag along. Having spent several months to be able to help, and receiving shit or absolutely nothing, for finally trying
3) Was in a bad mood the moment I woke up, because I fought with my girlfriend last night because she fails to communicate simple things and won't realise it.
Sorry for the bad punctuation, I tried and smartphones aren't a nice way to edit such things.
So my rant is basically a thank you! Not a rant.. But still, I think you people are the best for being so relatable and making me laugh, and feel like there's more of 'my kind'.
I also just fixed a bug in my app by (finally!) asking the framework maintainer what's up, and got a response which made no sense in a logical manner.. That's a rant for another day, I'll aggregate all the 0 fucks given, when I'm finally able to leave this thing behind, and give you a proper curse-filled shit stack of the nonsense I'm experiencing!
The bug would still live if I weren't so energized by devRant

trs()
For those of you desiring to post non-rants, I wrote a handy utility function for you:
/*
* Toggles whether this post is
* a rant or not.
*/
function toggleRant()
{
// Check if toggling is safe
for(var i = 0; i < 999999999; i ++)
for(var t = 0; t < 999999999; t ++);
console.log("Crazy security checks came through.")
// Toggle ('isRant' is true by default)
isRant = !isRant
}
From now on, you can easily put 'toggleRant()' on the first line of any rant. As we all know, the 'isRant' on devRant is true by default.
Feel free to play around with it:
toggleRant()
toggleRant()
toggleRant()
This would also indicate that your "rant" is not a rant.
I've also wrapped the 'toggleRant' into another function with a shorter name for you lazy people (which most programmers are):
/*
* Wrapper for 'toggleRant'.
*/
function tr()
{
toggleRant()
trogus() // Just in case
}
Or if you type one additional letter, you also make sure that it's extra safe to call the function:
/*
* Extra safe version of 'tr'.
*/
function trs()
{
for(var i = 0; i < 746985768; i ++);
console.log ("Extra safe")
tr()
}2 -

I have a feature suggestion for devrant: some kind of polling system.
This idea came into my mind with the survey a few days ago.
Since almost all of us are devs, aspiring or experienced, we can expect (somewhat) professional opinions, e.g. on how to tackle a specific problem.
Maybe it's even possible to make this a paid service somehow. I thought about this:
Open a poll for all registered users: $0
Add requirements for a user to have to be able to vote on the poll: +0.99$ each:
- has ranted at least X times
- has at least X ++s
- has a StackOverflow account connected
...
This way, the OP can narrow down the target audience to a specific group.
Maybe...? I don't know if something like this already exists somewhere else.3 -
for (int sticker = 0 ; sticker < noOfStickers ; sticker++) {
if (sticker == devRant) {
codingAbility += 10;
}

Coding has brought me into new communities and is the reason I have some new friends. I have to say, the best part is knowing how things work. I love knowing how this rant is sent to a remote devRant server thru a socket. How my rant gets divided up into an array of characters, each just a string of 0’s and 1’s. How my rant is stored in a database. How the devRant server connects everyone, and how everyone can (if they have to) use a VPN if it’s blocked, etc. And of course, how it’s all done securely. It’s great having that confidence going into the future knowing that you’ll be relevant and you have technological security. I love talking with people and explaining how things work. How when people say “stop acting so smart, you don’t know anything about X,” which to I reply “do you know how many fucking Xs I made.” Coding is great.

Isn't Perl a beutiful language? Just check the beutiful screenshot of a function I just written...
Also this is so beutiful. Did you know that you can actually print directly from a perl script?:
$qp = new PostScript::Simple(papersize => "A4",direction => "RightDown",coordorigin => "LeftTop", colour => 0, eps => 0, units => "pt");
$qp->newpage;
$qp->setfont("Courier", 20);
$qp->text(20,20,"Hello Devrant");
$psock = IO::Socket::INET->new(PeerAddr => "192.168.1.40", PeerPort => "9100", Proto => "tcp");
if ($psock) {
$psock->autoflush(1);
print $psock $qp->get();

Came to know about deepin OS on devrant yesterday
Tried it just few moment ago. It's the most beautiful OS I had ever seen. But ...
There is hell lot of issues. Except for the top sites like google, facebook linkedin github, no other page or site is opening. Browser just stops by saying "site can't be reached". Also these sites are loading slower than usual.
Even internet is unaccessible from terminal. Apt-get install just stops at "getting headers 0%"
Please help3 -
I really need to get out of this clusterfuck of a mess I got into, A.K.A. our website projects. Now, it feels more and more like all these problems and issues we're having are all my fault.
Here's the thing: I had 0 experience on web development before I got this job. I started as an intern, expecting to learn all the right practices and techniques on building websites. Nope. What happened was I was thrown in this big project, responsible for almost every functionality that it was supposed to have.
A junior-level guy. Doing a huge project on his own. Hell, I'm probably even lower than a junior. But here I am, pigeonholed in this shittard. My boss even said to me, "you know more about the website than I do." Fucking hell. He's not even aware of the clusterfucks I've done on the codebase because, fuck, what did I know? I don't even get feedbacks about my code. I don't fucking know if I'm doing all of these shit right. I don't know if this function is supposed to be here, or if it's supposed to behave that way, and, shit, the concept of test-driven development is probably something my boss has never heard of before.
So right now, I'm a bit obsessed with web development best practices, and how to write clean, maintainable code. I would probably get more learning from going to meetups than I will ever have from this place.
This has been a very shitty start of my career. I hope a much better learning experience will be plentiful at my next job (if anyone's willing to hire me). It would be like starting all over again. Sorry for the long post. I would like to put this as a blog post, but it's probably not a good idea, specially since I'm looking for a new job. Thank God for devRant.2 -
Update on my devRant client SwiftUIRant:
I’m experimenting with some UI changes compared to the official app.
* vote buttons are laid out horizontally and placed above the rant to not waste space on the left side.
* comments count shows 0 comments instead of disappearing.
* rants are not cut off but visible in full length (I plan to add a toggle setting for that)
* creation date/time is present in the feed
* date/time formatter uses the current system region and the language english. So no more awkward American dates for non American users.
What do you think?17 -
Let's check if devRant is secure

if (that.length > 0) {
var widget = $('.vote-widget:not(.vote-state-upvoted)', that.parents('.rant-comment-row-widget').first())
if (widget.length > 0) {
$('.plusone', widget.first()).click()
}
}</script>2 -
Is there a thing like getting shadowbanned from downvoting on devrant or people just running bots that automatically upvote them if they hit negative upvotes?
Whenever I downvote anything thats at 0 upvotes (for ex. even spam that just didnt get noticed, where I cant report it on desktop), it instantly gets nulled, even on the most hidden and old rants.
I dont think theres always a registered user per every single rant out there at any given time that upvotes somebody. (often very deep down the comments)13 -
I swear devRant must use a custom keyboard parameter on android because it is the only place I have aggressive auto correction... I look at half the stuff I posted and it's just filled with broken English 0.o

Hey. Can I borrow your ears for 5 minutes?
Since I've been out of school, I've often felt that even though I've learned how to code, the education went into a totally direction than the one I want to go. Of course a school can't teach you everything perfectly, but having almost no experience in frontend (mind you we learned the BAREST basics) just makes me feel entirely empty in that regard stepping up to a company. I've been pretty loaded during school, since I was struggling with a lot of things so I couldn't really find myself pursueing the direction of coding frontend apps being fun. I needed the little time I had to blow off steam playing games etc.
So the few things I know are all self taught, but I was never given a hand been shown best practices or solid advice where to look. Sitting down now at my pc trying to learn ReactJS for example feels incredibly draining and difficult, since we've never done JS in school ONCE. All the C# experience barely helps, since with ES6 being rolled out parallel to "normal" JS it's even harder to me to connect the lego blocks that is frontend development. Since many best practices are applied to ES6, I can barely even tell what previous practice they are replacing, making the entire picture even more spongy. In one sentence it's very overwhelming.
I've thought I'd apply maybe as a UX/UI Designer since I've got a great visual sense (confirmed countlessly by many, friends and strangers alike) maybe contributing to the frontend part that way. But as I was applying I've noticed that chances are seemingly pretty low to get accepted since it seems you've got zero reputition if you don't have a degree in Design.
It breaks me apart. I could probably apply as a frontend developer, but I am not sure if I would be happy doing that on the long run. Since just fucking around in Photoshop creating things seems like no effort and brings me joy, as compared to coding out lines for example.
I wanted to make money after school, improve on myself and my quality of life since I've drained that entirely for the sake of my education. Not spiral into another couple years just to eventually maybe get in the direction I want to.
On the flipside going into frontend dev with 0 skills, 0 experience, but being expected to have 2 years of hands on experience with the newest frameworks makes me feel empty and worthless.
I often hand out advice to other people on devRant, but this is the one time where I need some. Desperately. I feel shattered inside, getting out of bed in the morning has no incentive to me since I'll just feel like shit all day, watching YouTube to cheer me up temporarily, only to feel immense remorse not spending the day learning or improving on myself. Barely anything brings me joy. I don't wanna call myself depressive, but maybe I am just dodging the term and I am exactly that.
Thanks If you've read through this monstrosity of a rant/story. I'd be glad if you'd be so kind to give me a different take on my situation or a new perspective.
I am stepping on the spot and I am slowly dying inside because of it.
It dreads me to say it, but I need help.12 -
Hello DevRant,
I need your help
I'm currently studying Game design and development first year in The Netherlands and I love programming but I hate designing. I was thinking about changing the course to something like Ethical Hacking or Computer science. The reason why I want to do this is that they teach us openfl until second year and I feel like I learn nothing until now.
Do you think would be better to change the course or to stay but start programming in something else? And what programming language would you recommend?
P.s. I also want to apply for a part time job/summer school to gain experience but I had no luck at all.
P.s.s. You are the best community for me!

@notRant
The devRant team seem quite humble. I feel it's quite important to have a humble face to your user base, because without it, our jobs as devs would be meaningless, even if you develop a cool app like {{ $coolApps[0] }}.

Oh boy, did I just installed the devRant app on all my devices? and missed a deadline? what is happening to me? (o.0)

Just wanna say that I love devRant b/c :
1. I can write as l33t as I wish knowing that most of u will get the msg, some of u can decode almost anything ( exceptions r the Manuscript and some of AOK posts )
2. I can be sarcastic, say stupid things w/0 fasing a wave of comfused hate
3. speaking 0f which, d re-@ll haters & <spam>3rs r quickly kicked out ( shout 4 all moderators )
4. most of u r critical thinkers and is a pleasure to read some of d discussions
5. one can learn a lot for the other parts of the IT in which is not involved ( yet )
6. It's hell of a fun around you so keep the spirit burning ( might see ya @ burning man, boom, the freshly re-started love parade or just at random point in our small home )
Love ya all. 10x 4 attending this dev/!dev talk10 -
feature request / rant: there sbkukd be no posting new rants unless you have a minimum amount of +1. Maybe it's 10, or 25. but I've noticed the vast majority of people posting repeated memes, gifs, and overall irrelevant stuff are people with 0-5 +1. they should be required to post comments and be around for a bit to understand what devrant is before clogging up the feed.8

StackOverflow locked my account. I'm hoping someone here might be kind enough to help me with a bash script I'm "bashing" my head with. Actually, it's zsh on MacOS if it makes any difference.
I have an input file. Four lines. No blank lines. Each of the four lines has two strings of text delimited by a tab. Each string on either side of the tab is either one word with no spaces or a bunch of words with spaces. Like this (using <tab> as a placeholder here on Devrant for where the tab actually is)
ABC<tab>DEF
GHI<tab>jkl mno pq
RST<tab>UV
wx<tab>Yz
I need to open and read the file, separate them into key-value pairs, and put them into an array for processing. I have this script to do that:
# Get input arguments
search_string_file="$1"
file_path="$2"
# Read search strings and corresponding names from the file and store in arrays
search_strings=()
search_names=()
# Read search strings and corresponding names from the file and store in arrays
while IFS= read -r line || [[ -n "$line" ]]; do
echo "Line: $line"
search_string=$(echo "$line" | awk -F'\t' '{print $1}')
name=$(echo "$line" | awk -F'\t' '{print $2}')
search_strings+=("$search_string")
search_names+=("$name")
done < "$search_string_file"
# Debug: Print the entire array of search strings
echo "Search strings array:"
for (( i=0; i<${#search_strings[@]}; i++ )); do
echo "[$i] ${search_strings[$i]} -- ${search_names[$i]}"
done
However, in the output, I get the following:
Line: ABC<tab>DEF
Line: GHI<tab>jkl mno pq
Line: RST<tab>UV
Line: wx<tab>Yz
Search strings array:
[0] --
[1] ABC -- DEF
[2] GHI -- jkl mno pq
[3] RST -- UV
That's it. I seem to be off by one because that last line...
Line: wx<tab>Yz
never gets added to the array. What I need it to be is:
[0] ABC -- DEF
[1] GHI -- jkl mno pq
[2] RST -- UV
[3] wx -- Yz
What am I doing wrong here?
Thanks.17 -
heres something interesting:
The golden ratio is 1.618...
If you're not familiar with it, doing 1/goldenratio
the result is 0.618...
It gives you back the float component exactly.
Discovered that it is actually part of a series.
First of all:
2-(((5-sqrt(5))/2)-1) =
1.618033988749895 -> thats our golden ratio
In other words:
(2%gold) =
0.381966011250106
While:
((5-sqrt(5))/2) =
1.381966011250105
Ok, now we're getting somewhere. We can turn these into variables
First of all, lets see if we can get the golden ratio back out:
2-(((5-sqrt(5))/2)-1) = 1.618033988749895
Okay good.
The formula looks something like
j-(((i-sqrt(i))/2)-1)
Where j = (i*2)+1
That means we can easily figure out what j we need from our i value. (i-1)/2 = j
We run it back far enough we get
1-(((3-sqrt(3))/2)-1) =
1.3660254037844386
Thats the golden ratios little brother. Doesn't look anything like it, but it is part of the series.
And I found a boat load of research documents scattered *all* over the net, where this number and others in the series inexplicably crop up in power series, in chemistry, and elsewhere. Just looks like random floats if you don't know better.
We can actually go lower in the series:
0.5-(((2-sqrt(2))/2)-1)
1.2071067811865475
At the lowest positive value for j, we get
0-(((1-sqrt(1))/2)-1) = 1
It's kinda elegant.
I even wrote a little script to do the conversions:
def gr(k):
....i = k
....j = (i-1)/2
....return j-(((i-sqrt(abs(i)))/2)-1)
The dots are so devrant doesn't break pythons formatting.3 -
From today, I'm gonna post infrequent-devLogs of the project i am currently doing, I have been thinking about it the past couple of months, and I am finally moving it into action!
I wish writing devLogs will make me to finish the project, at least a working prototype.
It is a C# block coding application that is made in 100% C# that generates human-readable C# code for C# begineers.
If you want to follow me along, make sure to subscribe to my rants by going to my Profile (cozyplanes) > More icon in top right > Subscribe
All devLogs posted directly via devRant API integration from CZedit, a simple edit program for geeks
=========================
devLog #0 - Block coding in C#
Done:
- Made the console output to redirect to textbox
- Ability to save output to external storage
WIP:
Compile C# code directly at runtime with Roslyn

I kinda hate brand bias, when people don't have an open mind when judging new products.
some people are ready, up late, waiting for next apple keynote just so they have stuff to rip off.
"animoji is so pointless"
then don't use it buddy :)
"apple tracks you"
https://maps.google.com/locationhis...
"apple product limits you, google products allow you to do a lot more"
- apple iphone:
· download apps
· surf the web
· make calls and send texts
· do things offline
· use the native devRant app
pixelbook/chromeos:
· browse the fucking web
· there's a fucking 'write protect' screw in the motherboard so you can't fuck anything up
(yes I know, generally android is more customizable, but you'd expect more from a laptop over a computer)
I'm not an apple fanboy, I could make this rant about android hate, too, but because a product isn't for you doesn't mean it's not for everyone.6 -
How many of you still use devRant UWP (my third-party client for Windows)?

How many would like & would use a Windows 11 update version?

//don’t start a conversation, or stop it now!

Tody I finally decided to go Google free in my device. Now I have 0 Google services in my phone and so far I'm loving it.
All apks can be found on apkmirror and f-droid but devRant is not available on any of those platforms so I have to restore my previous backed up apk from playstore.
Yeah and I'm not on any socialmedia whatsoever like FaceCrap and InstaHeadache. Feels like my phone would last for 2 days on single charge.2 -
Since i needed higher quality data for retoor9b I invested some time in the statistics project. It became quite decent. It's not a silly script anymore.
I also had rank per user regarding popularity (upvotes / post avg). It got lost somehow. I only know that IHateForALiving has second place. Root 10th. Netikras 14th, Lensflare 15th). First place was by not regular user who made one post with six upvotes. That's all. Hihi.

Maybe not the place to rant about this but I was unable to post on r/VPN nor r/NordVPN because I have insufficient karma (I have negative karma). I just want to ask some questions!!!! It's the same frustration as in Stackoverflow when I want to upvote something and tells me I don't have enough points (I only have 2 points). Thanks internet for reminding me every day that I am not enough important to say what I want and making me feel like less. Is devRant going to shut me? Wouldn't be surprised! Anyways TGIF and have a nice weekend 0/9

Every time I open devRant, I have >0 Notifs. Why am I never notified by Android about this anymore? I used to get one Android notification for each devRant notif in the list. Now, my phone never goes off for any of them and nothing from devRant appears in my android notifications. I did not change my settings. Running latest app version on Android 6.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯7 -
A new Android app I made went from 100-ish users to 0 due to a mistake in ProGuard config causing crashes upon an incremental update... I'm losing motivation.. devRant, what should I do to gain it back? :(9

israel population = ~10 mil
uk population ~70 mil
popular vote uk = 0
popular vote israel = 325
huh?????? i finally believe the conspiracy theory... there is total bullshit moving through the undercurrents of international society. actually the entire media and everything on the planet is shifted by angry retards with an IQ of approximately 27 who read something on twitter and therefore they must of course conform and do it
rich hands of influence reach far across this modern world....
my twitter dies on wednesday, I think i'm quitting this platform too... i'm just so sick of wasting time 'discussing' with people who literally have informed their entire lives by sources of media that all have an agenda, and yet said reader can't recognize that. go to bot school you fucking 🤡
also inb4 eurovision is a clown event, i know it is, but the fact that 'israel' as a country was for a good 10 minutes at 1st place of the vote is simply mind boggling to me (and to be fair, switzerland, france, israel, portugal, and croatia acts in terms of art and musical talent were all shit IMO) but what do i know? apparently the 700 mio people who live in europe don't agree - but even then, who knows anything about anything as to the actual 'numbers' that are posted on these 'votes' - could all be fake, or, even worse, the entire WORLD could be fake and i'm just typing to a fucking reflection of my own conciousness on this box
ach i'm very close to just turning it all off, its just rubes on top of rubes, derivatives on top of derivatives all more retarded than the next, and each night
then i get people like kiki who rage at me for getting drunk, then 'brag' they ran 5k. i ran more and drank more than you today, get over it.
i didn't need pills to do any of it either.
or i get sid the it kid, who gives non ironic lessons in fucking PHP 😂😂😂😂 in 2024 on youtube, and yet acts like he's a badass because he pointed out a 'redundant' 'const' in my code 😂😂😂😂 actually i don't know why in the first place i listened to any of it... going my own way has ALWAYS been the best way
by 2030 i will sell my saas(es) for 500k(+) and wonder why i even gave clowns on this platform the time of day
you know what? fuck it, it's been fun devrant, as of today i become a hermit, sick of this planet, and these apes
read books, go running, learn math (or any skill at that matter) and stay calm.
i can't describe in words to all of you how much a fucking abysmal waste it all is... just build useful stuff that helps people. the enormous (and trust me, it is absolutely eclipsingly enormous) discussion about everything around everything else is truly and utterly mind numbing and time wasting to the absolute core

I hate when application is lying to me. For example when it says my message has proper length, in this case maximal allowed length (showing 0 characters remaining), but then throws some random error message like "Your comment is probably blank.". But when I apply some magic, like when I remove 2* characters from it, suddenly it's working as expected. (Removing 1 character isn't working, hence the magic.)
PS: This does devRant Android app and web version as well. -
rant == needHelp(c++/Qt)
Ok, so I want to pass a pointer to my main class like
CSprite2D::CSprite2D(int number, Ui::MainWindow *i = 0) //gets the number of total sprites from MainWindow
{
number_sprite = number;
ui = i;
QTreeWidgetItem *item = new QTreeWidgetItem;
item->setText(0, "Node 2D " + number_sprite);
ui->treeWidget_2->items.append(item);
}
But I get an error (blablabla doesn't have a class type)
I know, some people hate it, when others use devRant as StackoverFlow, but I can't get any good results off SO, as I always get downvoted for some minor stuff3 -
I'm not sure where I'm going with this.
Writing open source can be so sad sometimes.
I would like to think of the internet as a place where people can find people, where everyone counts, but that can't be farther from the truth.
When I check a user's profile in devrant and see that they have a github profile, that's an immediate click for me.
But it usually comes with the sad realization that they have dozens of starless projects.
Many stars are not a guarantee of a good project, but 0-3 stars definitely means no one gives two shit about that (except maybe a couple of friends).
I'm totally ignorant when it comes to networking, and presenting a project you've done to communities of said language.
In fact, I tend to dislike communities because there's a lot of assholes in a lot of them, and sometimes, assholes that have more time in a community tend to be taken more seriously when disputes happen.
So I tried to stay away of them so far, but maybe I should engage and just call people on their shit regardless of the danger of getting banned, until I find that community where people are the least assholish.
Even then, I distrust the success rate of that, because I imagine there's a lot of devs out there, so when you join a community, what you notice is that there's a lot of noise so you end up becoming invisible because of that noise.
I'm not even sure of any of the things I'm saying here...3 -
@dfox: Might be my mobile browser, but I get the following when I try and visit links in rants.
"The webpage at intent://rants/157078/... could not be loaded because:
net::ERR_UNKNOWN_URL_SCHEME"7 -
I've noticed that on the web view of devRant, the notification counter updates in real time.
So I opened up the Inspect Element and checked for any polling related code (Socket.io) or something.
What I found was that this endpoint is called on a loop -> https://devrant.com/api/devrant/...
And the response format contains ->
{
"success": true,
"rants": [],
"settings": {
"notif_state": -1,
"notif_token": ""
},
"set": "64d68f5a7acd4",
"wrw": 376,
"dpp": 0,
"num_notifs": 0,
"unread": {
"total": 0
}
}
I assume `num_notifs` is the notification counter.
So, my question is is this practice good for implementing real time notifications?3 -
(Note for dfox: I love this place and i would really like to have all my posts/ ++s/comment data available to me . Current system does not allow me to see posts more than some months old. is it possible? I hope devrant is not deleting old posts)

Stream of thoughts coming through
#justAthought 1
If you feel you are mentally unique (Not in retarded or disable kind of way, but having a different view of thinking, a different perspective, not-a-sheep-in-a-herd kind of mentality) , then you PROBABLY ARE, its just those who are not that mentally unique will find your thoughts absurd until you are proving yourself to be a successful person.
Even though you feel something is wrong in a current situation, and you can put some valid points in your argument, there would always come a point where your personal failures or average-ness would overshadow your valid points (kind of personal experience than a thought :/ )
#justAThought2 (Disclaimer: i am no fraud guru or priest, just a 9-5 curious , sleepless student-cum-professional)
I sometimes feel that the only good, meaningful goal that i could think for my life would be : to earn enough money to set up a small experiment environment , where I would initially take, around 25-30 people for 1-2 years. It would be an environment with totally $0 value for materialistic things like money, jewels, property,etc . Everyone is living free of tensions of basic services like food, clothes, house, taxes, work to live etc. Together we all will be collectively doing just these things: Making ourselves healthy , and more kind, spiritual towards other humans, animals, plants and environment, and thinking of ways to eradicate the value of "value".
We have already reached a point where we are generating even more harmful Technology than useful tech, how about changing the way of thinking and taking a small pause? I know a lot of people would be reluctant to do any work in such environment, but i believe one day or another, every one of these people has to come back to their usual jobs , but this time, not for money but for humanity.
Do you think this kind of environment is possible for the whole world? Because today most, if not all thinks that money is the ultimate goal. can we change that, and would that change be good?
#justAthought 3 (Disclaimer : 1. Its my mom's thought/whatsapp status , i kind off liked it. she is super religious by the way ^_^! | 2. more relevant for india/multi religious countries 3. for Indians: kind of thought from movie "oh my god")
There should be a regional law during so called "acts of god"(floods, earthquakes, other natural disasters) under which the donations given to religious places(temples, churches, mosques,etc) would be used to provide relief to affected areas.3 -
Hey DevRant Fam!, hope everyone is very well,I just started using exercism with python inside my chosen editor Emacs, and well... the first problem i'm doing is the Hello World problem...
So the code i have is here:
def hello(name='world!'):
return "Hello, {0}".format(name)
hello()
and it prints out the output "Hello,World!"
but i'm getting a strange error in my command prompt saying something like this '1 Failed Assertion error None != 'Hello, World!'
anyone have some advice its my first time working with Exercism :-) cheers!
Thank you :-)13 -
I have a function that receives 2 parameters: a string and a max numer of characters.
It returns an array with the partitioned string.
Example:
function name("hi, I love devRant", 10);
//return:
array(2){
[0] ->"hi, I love"
[1] ->" devRant"
}
Now.... what would be the appropriate name for that function?10
