Been a really sad day today. Learnt this morning that my friend had died. Couldn't concentrate on anything but managed to give a nice report to boss on video call. Tried coding, but could only code a dropbox before giving up and firing up PES. Was so absent-minded the AI kept hammering me. Closed the damn thing and tries coding again but realized the combo box was that would get done today. Fucking sucks when you lose a friend. Even harder to take that he died after falling of a rooftop. Fucking suck!!2

How can I use a custom DNS server on my schools network?
They seem to block any DNS that isn't their own. I've tried 8.8.8.8 and the new cloudflare one. Both blocked, it's a real issue because their default dns dies for about a minute every 12/24 hrs causing my VPN to go down.
How do they even block external DNS servers?5 -

Why the heck would you allow (or need) nested block comments? Imo this is a major design flaw in the kotlin linter.
I always use /*... //*/ so I can remove the comment starter w/o having to remove the comment end, but kotlin just starts a second, nested comment there.
Java, C, Cpp, C#, JS,... Not one of these uses nested block comments. I think jetbrains was just lazy?
I mean, I know why such stuff happens. I also developed DSLs in MPS, but there sure are ways to go around such things..

Looks like chrome ad block extensions (and many more) gonna have trouble or even completely stop working as of January 2023.

Tldr: google will drop support for its extension platform Manifest v2 (Mv2) and will only support Mv3 which doesn't have webRequest api. It does have an alternative api called declarativeNetRequest but it dowsn't support all of webRequest api features. This will be problem for many content blocking extensions.

Considering it’s in a TYPING class you’d think they’d’ve used their typing skills to use but no, they instead use block coding meant for like 4th graders. And there's no other way to make block comments. And after actually commenting out every single line, your version control won't know how to merge it anymore, because there are now 100 changed lines instead of 2.6

That moment where you see code of someone who riddles their code with nested if-else and if-elseif statements.
I don't remember writing an else statement for years. It almost always can be avoided (and the rare cases where it makes sense I prefer the switch statement).
Yet I never grasp why people do:

Instead of

if (!someCondition) {
throw new Error();
}
// continue in the normal scope
```
And then we have experts that like doing:

If ever was to design a programming language, I'd forbid the `else` and `elseif` keywords. I have yet to find an instance where I could not replace some `else` by either a guard or an early return or introducing some polymorphism.1 -

After all this time, I've finally managed to apply my programming skills in my day situation (thing I really wanted to happen).
A website had a block of text reeeally long and I couldn't select it all. Grabbed my terminal, opened vim and did a program to grab that block of text and save it into a file. Ran it and worked perfectly. I mean, isn't the best thing I've ever done but I feel very proud of myself. :) -
The dating app "happn" allows you to report and block users, and among the options to choose from is "commercial profile". Happn also has a spam bot of their own, which sends you messages about discounts regularly. You can block and report their own bot as a commercial profile in order to stop it from spamming you.6

Ok, so i got this new machine and whilst migrating I want to stay online with certain services. So atm there is x.web.nl and y.web.nl both have ssl and one runs on server x and the other on server y. Now is the question how the heck do i forward that ssl file??? I figured i have to do something with my nginx server block. Because that is terminating the cert. Can someone help me out??1

I need some Dev wisdom for you wonderful devRanters!
I have the opportunity to intern at a large multinational company overseas. I can get flown there and have a place to stay so that's not the issue. These are:
#1 it's cutting edge block-chain tech (not that I'll get to do anything super important) that I have no idea how it works. written in a language I don't know.
#2 they're trying to make a certain application of block chain technology proprietary and that goes completely against everything I stand for.
3# I'm only a 2nd year student and don't think I can handle uni while trying to catch up on a new development prosses, maintain decent grades and work part time at a job a might lose, if I go.

I'm trying to generate a PDF from a website (https://devhints.io/react) on Ubuntu, but the two packages I tried (htmldoc and htmltopdf) both split the code at onto separate pages. I'm trying to have the code blocks on one page or start a new page and then have the title of the code block and the code block.

I've been working on this personal project for awhile, I showed some screenshots, then I showed some updates (which I promptly deleted cause it was plain ugly). A website aimed at the "not-so-seasoned" devs, and I've been at a creative plateau for about 3 days now. I try to do some front-end, when I like what I see, I take care of the corresponding server-side logic, but for some reason, I'm having "Developer's block" (is that even a thing?).
Every second that goes by I try to do something else none code related, but I can't shake thinking about the project, but once I switch back to it, fuckin crickets.
I'm not asking a question this time (for once lol), just a mini dev's block rant. -

Blockchain based on SHA256 is now stuck at a certain block due to high mining difficulty, it appears that a miner, mined few blocks at 15 TH/s then stopped, my question how to resolve this issue and is there any setting to adjust (chainparams.cpp) in case this happened if no block is mined in a certain amount of time.2

Hi Devrant, my little brother showed me this site (https://commits.facepunch.com/) which is the commits page for a game he plays.
Some users comment block element characters like █▅▌▊▋ ▉▇█▅▍_▍▄▉▆ he asked if i knew if that meant anything and I don't, but now i'm curious myself.
can anyone recognize the block characters and/or understand if they actually mean anything, as far as a I know they're just block elements people use to mess with others, but like a lot of people are posting them
