My wife wants me to learn another language. I told her I was already fluent in half a dozen languages, and decent at ton more.
Apparently computer languages don't count...11 -
My parents have never had a router faster than 10Mb/s. When our most recent one finally bit the dust, I urged them to buy a decent one, because everyone uses the internet now. LOOK AT THE SPEED WE'VE BEEN MISSING.9

Things I'm half decent at: Writing code
Things I am absolutely the worst at: Managing projects
Things I got employed for: Writing code
Things I do: Managing projects20 -
When you think you are a fairly decent programmer, then you try to align two buttons next to each other in CSS5

Boss: please refactor this js 2k lines spaghetti code class and use it in our reactive functional app
Me: it will take like 1 week to refactor and plug this
Boss: but it's almost the time I needed to write it!
YOU DON'T SAY? MAYBE FIRST LEARN HOW TO WRITE DECENT CODE. ffs.2 -
When you have to make a game for a school project but no one knows how to make proper sprites so you're just messing around trying to make stuff that looks decent but finally it ends up looking disgusting.32

So last weekend I started collecting hardware for a small scale cluster at home to test scalability of my software. Making some decent progress.
Tomorrow I will replace the switch and this weekend I will set up storage so I can start my first application20 -
Clients can such cheapskates, client asks me for hosting options, I suggest Webfaction ($10/m), decent service, storage etc. Client goes and buys ($20/year) hosting, storage space 2GB. Client has 2.9GB worth of emails. Now am charging said client ($110) for migration.4

The problem with my life is acceptance from others. Validation (almost wrote vladiation).
For instance, I finished my course in Advanced Java Programming a few days ago. Supposed to be a year course or some shit, finished it in two months. They told me I don't need to go to the remainder classes and I could write the examination. Got the certifications, passed with flying colours.
Well done me? No, fuck you me. "It's not through Oracle, so it's completely useless. Har har you wasted your measly salary on a course and it means nothing". You know what? Fuck you and fuck validation. I will validate myself from now on.
Anywhom, what a start to a shitty rant. Let's go over some generic points so I can finally make my avatar.
IE can suck a duck ("oooh you made it and it runs fine in every fucking browser except fucking IE - slow clap).
Chrome RAM usage can suck a duck, two times. (just generic post, don't actually give a shit - I use Firefox).
People who can't use one fucking indentation standard ("oooh two spaces, oooh three spaces, oooooh a fucking tab button... " etc) can fuck off.
That fucker who came and converted my buildings in Age of Empires with the "wolololo" priest can fuck off too.
Been reading through devRant and you know what? You guys are pretty cool5 -
I love it when companies expect you to care about their vision and act like the work is 100x more important than it is.
Oh yes and of course no overtime pay or decent salary that'd be too much!
😒😫🤯3 -

I had a few interesting ones for my current job. Most of you should of hear it by now, but still a decent brainteasers.
You have 9 pool balls, 1 of which is slightly heavier than the other. You have a balance scale, find the heavier ball. You can only use the scale twice.
Devs, let's not spoil this by actually posting the answer.16 -
Never underestimate the power of a decent chair!
Was staying at friend's for a couple weeks with a horrible chair - my back just spasmed so hard that I am physically unable to get up from bed. Thank god for devRant to keep me occupied throughout the night.
Stay safe kids3 -
Friend asked me to help with his HTML5 form validation. His back-end work was decent, but whoever did the front-end... Oh boy.
They used media queries for mobile etc, which was fine. Until I saw what the queries did. Instead of resizing the form accordingly, they hide the visible one and make another one visible.
WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS7 -

First few days as a professional software engineer (c# .net) have gone decent. Made my first bigger commit today started working on a small new feature that requires more work.
CoWorkers are really nice, boss is cool, super chill over all. #feelsgood6 -
Turns out apple doesn't allow apps that use GPS on iPads without a GPS module. Decent idea, 100% undocumented. One stack overflow answer, zero upvotes.2

I'm working on my author website and I really suck at designing. So, can you give me your opinions? I can take honesty, even if it's harsh.
So, ugly or decent? What do you think?52 -

Bob: "LGTM. Bet that took some balls."
Craig: "LGTM. Missing unit testes drive me nuts."

Damn, looking at LinkedIn is pretty depressing when everybody seem very successful, and I can't even find just a decent job at the moment...5

Tomorrow is first day in work.
Its not an IT work but the payout is good enaugh to buy some decent notebook and then next year get IT job.8 -
Recently been made senior dev at my company... I never really knew the struggle of finding decent developers who haven't massively exaggerated their knowledge on their CV's 😑6

If you're so fucking mentally lazy that you can't write something halt-decent the first time, maybe you shouldn't write anything at all!

It's gotta be the Linux kernel.
It's so good at managing base resources on all platforms that it allows hundreds of thousands of hipsta-ass devs to write shitty code and still get decent speed.1 -
Pour one out for our last VMS/Alpha computers heading to the great bit bucket in the sky.
Was decent hardware in it's day, 20 years ago, but we now run EC2 instances that are faster. 🙃14 -
In India a standard WordPress website with 10 pages and blog functionality would cost you as little as Rs. 2,000-5,000! That's $314-$784
And a few "agencies" do make a decent product for the amount
But in general the product is not maintainable at all. I once handled the upgradation of a client and her referrals has been giving me projects ever since!12 -
Got my first successful freelance job done today!
Was a very basic website but...I still got paid and I feel good about it. Seriously thinking about making a decent web app that can help me nail more customers.3 -

This is from my personal experience. I've been working on an Android app, I'm a web developer tho. I don't have much experience in java but just watching a decent YouTube tutorial and getting the source code to play with, helped me more than I had hoped for.3
-
You'll have more pain convincing people that you CAN write a decent app in PHP, than writing one.
#noHatePlz3 -
So my wife got laid off from her job aaaaaaand that puts me back again in the hunt for freelance bs to cover up her income until she finds something decent........dis is gon suck bad man.....6

Why do people want their webpages to be compatible with IE? Who cares? It is used by 1% to download a browser. Moreover, Edge is out. It's like writing a decent port or even a native game for Linux. Never pays off.9
-
Today I tried medication (concerta 36mg) for my ADD for the first time in my life (im 26 years old).

1) there is proper, well-written documentation for everything, in English.
2) make clients send in a decent description of what they think it's going wrong, with screenshots where needed.
3) make me smart enough to figure out what's going on if 1) and 2) do not apply.2 -
Any recommendation for a decent mechanical number pad? It seems either too expensive or using knock-off keys...39
-
Some of the guys in our team like to throw pranks once in a while. So they printed a version of my ID with Mr. Putin's face instead of mine (a decent upgrade in my opinion) and put the paper on top of my ID. I was walking with it around the office for God knows how long until I noticed.2

Damn, AWS really need to hire some decent UX people. Not sure what's with this latest change, but it feels like a massive step backwards.10

When will Microsoft stop ruining good products?
Xamarin was a decent enough platform untill MS got a hold of it. Now, you never know what the next update will break.
Skype is already lost to the MS darkness.8 -
I'm never going back to Google Cloud, AWS is the shit.
I'm fucking orgasming with how organized everything is, decent documentation, level of configurability, the integration of one service with another.
Just wow20 -

My biggest regret working for a company that is not willing to buy decent dev machine when they actually can afford it.

I'm not, by far, what you pros call 'decent' at being a Linux wiz but installing Discord on Manjaro got me feeling 1337.
And all I did was run packer -S discord.5 -
@localhost My setup! The laptop is on private WiFi that is unmonitored. There's a desktop tower behind the monitors that is wired into the unmonitored network as a server running Linux. it's decent but could be better. and I need more stickers1

The horrendous prices on decent graphics cards now.. people that want gaming cards for gaming can't afford them anymore 😣8

That awkward moment when I was one step way from buying a program for 49$ and ending up using GitBook editor for markdown files for free.
Ya I know, but I suck at markdown files and I needed a decent editor lol
it is a nice editor though: https://www.gitbook.com/editor -
Italian gaming community is a shit place. In my spare time I make website for minecraft servers or whatever game you want, but I found out that people prefer to have a bad website but pay less instead of pay more for a decent website.
P.S. I'm not saying that I'm the best italian web designer.2 -
When I can see actual clients using my software, and can get real feedback from them.
I usually work on backstage projects and my job never really affected "real, normal users". When I have something pushed and can really see user feedback and smiles, that means I've made it.
Of course, if that's on a decent job, with a decent team and decent pay. Which is where I am at now.
Soon, the app will be released - if the external infrastructure guy stop sucking. So, I'm hoping to feel I've made it soon, real soon :) -
Wtf is this shit .... why the hell is so much fees even accepted as normal
(Ps - you can get a decent i5 with amd gpu and dos for 40k)11 -
You know the app is good when you get a new phone and install devrant before whatsapp. Devrant even auto correct to decent lol.
Fyi: galaxy s8+ rocks -
I label myself as a graphic designer. I can't even make a decent-looking logo for my portfolio. I know I don't need one but it's annoying.3

A few days back I talked to a person who is far away from me with an air distance of 7937km and electronic signals moving at almost speed of light crossing countries. That was good decent conversation.

maybe it’s just ASP.NET core and blazor
but fuck this23 -
Still can't find a decent node MVC framework. Thought I'd list out all my requirments and what I'd like.
Turned into a readme of me moaning about current frameworks. Not sure I want this on github

I'm going into my second year of Games Programming and I think I've already got a few decent looks into how the rest of my life is going to be thanks to devRant... Looking forward to these "Recruitment" people...2
-
My project had a pretty decent state until I decided to add more features. New features had new requirements which in turn added more code along with a bug which nearly destroyed my will to live.
Went into 'fuck it' mode and reverted aaallll the way back to the decent state. Now I don't feel like sticking firecrackers to my laptop and lighting them up. 😌 -
Hetzner.
Simple, efficient, no useless fluff, decent prices for a good service, no hidden surprises or overcomplicated setups.
What more could you ask for?2 -
What's your opinion on the error-value vs try-catch debate?
I'm usually on the error-value side of things.
Its the preferred error-handling in Go and the pretty much only decent solution in C.
Also, frequently thrown exceptions seem to impose a larger overhead than the constant checking of the error-value.24 -
The computer lags, windows 8 lags, vagrant lags, chrome lags, phpstorm lags, EVERY-FUCKING-THINGS LAGS.5

- A boss that's not 100% incompetent to computers and technology in general.

University assignment asks to create some encryption harder to break than Caesar Cypher. So I decided to go online and look for some tips on making a somewhat decent algorithm.
Universal answer: don't do it
😶
Well then, night off I guess 😎2 -
Why oh why do companies scrimp on hardware and tools for devs. It's a constant battle to even use my machine let alone make progress. I cost 1k a day a decent machine 2k maximum. I have spent the last two days fighting hardware issues.1
-
- Writes a short decent code. Doesn't work.
- Refactores it with variables and function. Automatically works.
- Changes back to the original form. Freaking works now.
Wtf.!!!
Oh! The lord of bugs and errors, have mercy on me.2 -
Stop whining about slow IDEs. If the IDE is running slow its because your shitbox computer is pissing it's pants. Get rich and buy decent hardware or use notepad and imagine the syntax highlight you cheap hook-nosed fuck. Fucking degenerate.8

Why has authentication of web services to be so fucking complicated?
PAM, OpenID, LDAP, SSO...
Every fucking service supports something different and I have a hard time finding a decent tutorial on LDAP and the likes.6 -
Who the fuck invented Hungarian notation?
lpszName, bVisible, pNext, ppData...
A variable's type should already be clear by its name and scope. If not, get yourself some decent IDE that helps you out. Why this style is still in use in code like the Vulkan API is beyond me... IT IS NOT USEFUL!3 -
Google tracks Android users even with location services turned off.
https://theguardian.com/technology/...
Fuck Google & Apple; Are there any decent mobile operating systems that actually respect your privacy?11 -
Noo, it doesn't have to be responsive, that's not in the specs we agreed on. It just has to look&work perfe<khmm> decent on any phone and tablet.
- sneaky client1 -
You! Yes you.
I'm sure you know a lot of things I don't, even tho I have a pretty decent education and job.
Universal justice wouldn't be that I get fired and you get my job. You getting a (better) job would be universal justice.
So I wish you best of luck.4 -
Are desktop PCs becoming a legacy, a history, just like floppy disks or CDs? Do you have one? Do you really need it?
I do have a decent tower pc in my balcony since last year. Haven't used it since early August and I honestly don't know what would I use it for once I bring it back in34 -
I'm a young dev with ADD. Basically I just need to stay up late, and then get myself to hyperfocus on my code. It typically gets done in time to get a decent night's sleep.1

I'm going nuts with this isolation, so next on my agenda... let's learn flutter!
Anyone have some half decent app tuts (preferably not videos) that they can suggest? I'm sure the usual "to do" list has been done and dusted a billion times, I'm looking for something more explorative into different features of flutter rather then just a "build this"5 -

Any recommendations for a decent free web host service?
I'm using plain html with no databases.
My current host seems to be having issues with ftp.8 -
If it's an open source project and it (shock horror) actually gets a decent userbase, expect it to suck up *way* more time than you originally intended.

I don't know why people love taking pictures of their monitor screens, use a decent screenshot tool or just your inbuilt utility tool FFS -_-6

Finally!
Today is the day that my team gets reinforcment. For nearly a year I declined everybody, but now I got someone with a decent amount of experience.
Devranters please cross your fingers that I wasn't wrong at the evaluation.4 -

Oh the joy of enterprise software development in a legacy system. I just wanted to add a new checkbox with a small feature and now I'm balls deep in age old half decent documentation and just have to pray it works. Implementation time: about 2 days or so1

Sorry to repost,
I had made a request for friends post last week, but someone mentioned my discord link was too far down, so maybe people missed it.
So here it is chirptune#1829.
Again, I'm doing wfh and having decent anxiety so I would appreciate talking to someone. I can also hear you on your problems. -
God I hate it when devs complain about not having a decent job 😠 And then they're like "Oh, I've been looking for the past 6 months, but every company just ignores me"
Look, hate to be the one to break it to you, but companies are constantly searching for devs, and many companies have such shortage of quality devs, they'll take just about anyone with even remotely relevant skills as long as they have a decent attitude. If you can't find a decent job in this market, well, it's either that nobody needs a dev who spent the last 10 years doing basic UI and simple NodeJS apps, or they don't want a dev who loudly shits on new technologies while acting like their GitHub profile is impressive enough.3 -
Decent family tree software that's capable of sanely organising photos, letters etc.
I'm sure none actually exists, web based or otherwise.3 -

I love emacs dired mode.
Nothing better than the full power of a decent text editor to edit directory content.
I know quite some multi-file-naming tools, but they are all crap compared to dired.
That's all. Have a nice weekend, everyone!1 -
Same twat manager from my last rant... He'd call my mobile after hours because we were friends once, and progressively get drunk throughout the call and try to come up with ways to usurp the director, who is actually a decent guy. He'd try to talk me into schemes and convince me to leave with him or get him ousted. Silly fucker.

Server provider provides VPN, VPS, Dedicated etc.
VPN for 1 month thats pretty decent costs 4$ per month.
VPS where i can do whatever the fuck i want.
3$ per month and surely not beast but gets the server job done. So yeah its kind of nice for what it is.3 -
To my surprise I'm actually on target with my ongoing projects. Going to have a decent amount of time off this Christmas.1

Saw this meme in an article the other day about why it's a bad idea to make your guru-grade devs quit.
It suddenly dawned on my that the meme pretty much summed up all the decent Devs i've worked with over the years - they generally turn coffee and beer into code. -
That feeling when everyone left the student accomodation already, so the internet speeds are actually decent

Anyone got some decent book or scientific papers to read about how looking at phone screens affect human brain ? Might be also about watching tv because I don’t see the difference, despite the size of the screen.
It’s cause I started to think that either me or everyone around is complete idiot.1 -
So you have saved up some money, got a macbook, paid for an apple developer account to build an app which uses the camera only to find out that the simulator doesnt work with the macbook's camera. Apple do you realise that without devs you wouldn't have a decent app store?8

Custom php api for huge known national software. No frameworks. Not following mvc structure. No decent documentation. Im the new dev and like how the fuck should i catch up before they think im not productive2

I got my last job from stack overflow jobs. They had me implement a code test that involved a decent amount of features and took several weeks of my freetime to complete, but in the end I had a short phone interview and I had gotten the job :D

I hate Apple's complete ineptness to the need of a decent way to move all your pictures, not just your recent pictures, between two iPhones.2

I think we should have a decent web app for devrant. And... make it open source so we all could give a hand 🖐️8

Achieving decent 2D collision detection using ray casting in unity is kinda hard. I have immense respect for gameplay programmers.
I'm almost there though...13 -
Still using a database from 90' - Enea Polyhedra:
- no decent visual sql client
- utterly limited scripting language
- weird communications protocol

The coffee at my work sucks! :(
Recently, the coffee machine was broken and a better one was installed until the other one got fixed. It made decent coffee, but now we're back to drinking piss. Teasing!2 -
I thought I was decent at Java until I saw it in action over an internship this summer... is it always so complicated or do I have more to learn?2

Just fixing a broken build due to another bad merge by SVN. There was no reason it should have fucked that merge up but somehow it did.
Of course I didn't double check by building locally so that was my screwup but what I wouldn't give to use a decent source control tool1 -
So, might be the first time ever but I have a reasonable client. Oh wait, life isn't that nice!
Boss, stop picking fights over stupid shit with the client!
Boss, actually show up to meetings you called!
Boss, do you want to get us fired from the contract?
Boss, stop threatening the client! They hold all the chips here!
Boss, actually listen to my technical advice since you are not technical!
Boss, go die in a hole!
Boss, I want your job and paycheck you do nothing!
Boss, don't tell me you are tired and we can talk tomorrow when you kept me up until 3am the previous night then called an 8am meeting!
Boss, give everybody, including the client, more than 2 hours notice for a meeting, then get pissed when the client doesnt show. They have other meetings!1 -
Is there any of you guys here that make a decent income from admob on mobile app here? Any advice on that?1

I really don't get people who become overly attached to a single language to the point of refusing to use the obvious better option for the situation (I'm looking at you people who use a Java wrapper for CUDA). Amy decent programmer should pick the best tool for the job.2 -
I think I'm a good teacher, learner when it comes to Front-end development. I've been active on Stackoverflow, but this platform to help someone seems more decent (here you don't need to curse someone's code to help him/her) 😀1

Does anyone know a semi decent printer available in Germany/Europe, for personal use that doesn't you a kidney and won't break after 7 months??
They're all so god damn awful it makes me want to pull my hair out.16 -
How the fuck do you get over 10k points on stackoverflow? Are these people actually developing and pursuing a job or are they just F5ing in the questions news section?
Recently I tried to get some upvotes on answers, but there was not one decent question in one hour which would have gotten me more then 1-2 upvotes.2 -
How to create a decent portfolio?
I'm a mobile dev and almost all tye apps I developed are for private use inside companies.6 -
Okay. Why no one has never bothered to update rubyonrails.org? The site looks like shit is from 2009 and compared with laravel its nothing. Also while laravel is getting cool updates we get crap... The only decent thing that we got was ActionCable...2

What is the cheapest and closest to "decent" cloud computing provider you've come across? I'm currently using scaleway ARMs -- all thanks to someone posting scaleway's name and comparing server prices to a cup of morning coffee :) . It's OK, really can't complain (although it's somewhat silly to sync ssh keys on-boot only IMO). Is there anything cheaper with no less quality?6
-
Been wanting to get into OOP and unit testing, haven't found a single semi big project that I can use to study these techniques...
Wrote myself a class when asked to do an API call last week, and I think it looks pretty decent...
Does anyone have a ressource to just see how to do it "properly" on medium sized projects? (100k loc)6 -
Got the distro hop bug again... Currently running elementary (fucking love it) but in need of some temporary change...
Thinking I might give Fedora a go or maybe jump back into arch for a bit, any other decent recommendations (prefer not to use debian based distributions just for some difference)12 -
Anyone else notice that there is a decent set of super dickbag senior devs that help nothing and use every meeting as a soapbox session? Dafuq? Why be so condescending and rude... For the purpose of feeling intelligent? Us lowly Dev I's don't have any say in the current processes. Fuck off douchewalls.2

Hey guys! I want to purchase a new phone. I owned an Asus zenfone2 and was happy with it. I want and android phone with at least 4 gb of ram and a decent chipset. I am not interested in samsung s8 google pixel or such. I was looking into oneplus 3 or 5 or lg g6. Could you provide some suggestions?9
-
Need an advice on what android phone to buy.
I am looking for decent cpu (snapdragon preferribly), decent storage, screen size around 5.5 inch and not too big. A decent battery life. Fingerprint/faceid sensor is a must. Ram at least 4gb.
I am really interested in samsung s10 however they ship s10 devices with snapdragon only to usa and china as far as I know. So In Europe s10 is being sold with exynos cpu which I heard is laggy.
Then I was wondering wether to get a Pixel 4, however I dont like that the battery is only 2800mAh so Im not sure if that will be enough. I looked at Pixel 3a bet then I'm not sure wether 4gb ram will be enough?
Any ideas? Can you tell me about your devices that you are using?9 -
How do you deal with the constant feeling of uneasiness about not being able to come up with useful ideas? I'm not a genius, but I do pretty good work for a pretty decent size company with pretty decent size clients. I've always been good at building, just not so much at coming up with the ideas. The thing is that I just want an idea that I can be heads down on that people will actually use. I've been struggling with this problem for the last few years and it's not getting any better. Is it the same for everyone else?7
-
Finish my studies.
Find a (half)decent job.
Build the Linux distro I need to start the real project.
Fund the startup I've been planning last months of 2017 before the tech gets old. -
What IDE do you guys use?
I use notepad++, Codeanywhere and Visual Studio 2017 Pro.
I'm looking for decent code completion with internal referencing to keep track of methods and variable.
Would you recommend staying with VS or how about intelliJ?
Or something new?6 -
I think our network was having a heart attack today. Had to jump in on a webinar after most people had gone home and ended up tethering to my phone to get a decent connection. Hopefully our network guys see the ticket and can fix things quickly.1

Trying to find decent window server hosting for multiple websites without paying extortionate prices is less fun than I'd thought.
-
UEFI/BIOS support is a joke. They always find new ways to not work, especially when running disks in RAID, dual booting and/or multi-monitor support. In all the motherboards I have owned or used, I have never seen any decent UEFI/BIOS documentation that expands on the title of each setting...
"Some-Abbreviated-Setting (SAS): Check this to enable SAS".
Oh really?2 -
The 20 minute rule:
If you are unsure about a problem, you MUST spend 20 minutes trying to solve it yourself. If you havent solved it in those 20 minutes, you MUST ask someone for help.
Never tried this in practice but it sounds decent in theory. 2 heads are usually better than 12 -
First round of grading the newbies' C hand-ins. Some are decent, some are great, some are way beyond the scope of the curriculum (50 line solution using structs for something that can be done in 5 lines), and some are "oh god why?".
Life as a TA is hard. -
I need a powerhouse laptop: top CPU, loads of RAM and a decent GPU to run games occasionally (doesn't have to be ultra high graphics). Any brand recommendations? I love building computers, but buying laptops is really overwhelming.17

Ideal dev job would be to work on pretty/girly fashion or cosmetics websites, have drama free and knowledgeable co-workers, decent salary, great organization, external training opportunities, cute modern office, dogs, cats and a cafe on site, a dope recharge room & no talking to clients ever.4

Fuckin shit web hosts! I must have wasted three hours over the past three days on support emailing, troubleshooting and waiting for a webpage to load. Is a decent host at a decent cost too much to ask for?
-
So I start my new dev job Monday and I'm considering vlogging/blogging the experience. Have any of you found success doing this? Not monetarily but like actually had time to create some decent content. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.3

Uggg if you are going to revert color changes fine but don't revert 3 hours of template edits which I did to make the theme look half decent. Like seriously!
-
What are you currently working on? You can be as vague as possible and let others try to figure it out.
I’m currently working on something to make pelican based blogs look a bit decent.8 -
Seeing a lot of hate against PHP here. It used to be a shitty language with no decent frameworks, update yourselves please, it's getting embarrassing for you. WordPress, laravel, Zend. That's 60% of the web. We run this shit.7

Why didn't a single manager I had worked with bother theirselves with reading "Peopleware" book. Decent managers cannot themselves afford to not read that book.3

Just started a blog. It doesn't look pretty and I just grabbed the first fully free platform I could - I don't care how it looks. I intend to post on it every time I learn something interesting or have something I think is decent to say.

Any recommendations for whisk(e)y?
Maximum of 40-45 euro for a decent size bottle (50cl or more).11 -
Unfortunately I am working in a firm where they consider QAs as some second class citizens. Also the QAs we have right now are purely blackbox testers who doesn't know shit about the system.
In my opinion a QA should know about the system and integration. They should also have decent programming skills.
What are your thoughts?2 -
Front-end development leaves me slightly in awe of the developers. How do you do it?
I come from a background in scientific computing. I can write boundary element code that's fast, performant and safe. I can build Monte Carlo simulations that work well. I'm even decent with backend development in Flask somehow. But ask me to build a simple web form and... argh!3 -
2018-present, 0$ aside few tips
I’m a volunteer mobile developer for Verge, a cryptocurrency that lacks a decent and reliable mobile wallet. So I joined in for the cause and because I like mobile dev and wanted to dive in again.
Plus, FOSS orgs made me new internet friends that are now also real life friends!
Now I do nightmares in Kotlin :) -
Ouch. Difficult decision ahead. Be 30 years old. Have a decent amount of experience on the .net stack.
Ditch it all and go all in on Java EE or continue to pursuit mastery of .net?5 -
Maybe I'll get some decent advice from a rampant over simplification...
2 job offers, assume compensation is close enough to not matter much.
Pride & Ambition/Opportunties

Work-life balance & Time
How would you compare them, and where is the tipping point?
I'm feeling burnt out at the moment, which is screaming to pick the second, but... I can't let go of the first.11 -
So, I really hated NodeJS until now, because it didnt really have a decent framework. Things changes I think: https://adonisjs.com/

My parents are quite supportive of my plan to build myself a decent computer with an actual graphics card (currently I have a laptop with an i7-4600MQ chip & HD 4600 integrated graphics). I might actually get enough money for it in some reasonable amount of time!2

Been searching for an offshore data server for at least 5 fucking hours. There's nothing worse than searching for decent low-end offers outside of europe.5

I've been developping some software so an entire debian OS gets bootstrapped and installed with all the desired software with the help of puppetlabs software...i need to prepare a server that can handle virtualization and be fast at it. So all the goodies a decent server needs, the apt, caching, networking, firewall, everything checks out... I want to test kvm virtualization... Doesn't work. Wtf? Spend a decent amount of time figuring out what the hell is wrong... I finally dzcide to think 'what if my buddy accidentally gave me a bad mobo'...
$ grep -e (vmx|ssm) /proc/cpuinfo
Nothing...
I feel so stupid to not check the mobo virtualization capabilities.3 -
Whelp, Fedora has frustrated me one too many times. Anyone have suggestions for a good, stable distro with at least decent NVIDIA support?19

Level 1 support moron dishing out bad instructions from his flowchart.
Wanted me to edit config files for a production setup, which would've killed shipping for all stations, in the middle of our shipping rush.
Fixed the problem while in the escalation queue for level 2. L2 confirms the fix, and bemoans the shit documentation L1 provided.
If its a business class (mission critical) system, hire decent support staff! You might try testing people for reading/listening comprehension, and then paying them a decent wage! This isn't good for my blood pressure...undefined l1 support shipping mouthbreathing flowchart monkey cheap business support bullshit outsourcing -
If you would have a decent/good degree in IT, would it be easy to find work in a foreign city like London, Berlin or Tokyo?4

1. I like problem solving.
2. I like mucking about in systems that consist of many interrelated parts and learning how they interact. I like to imagine that I'd make a decent mechanic.
3. I'm fond of building stuff with abstractions and concepts. I'm not the brightest, but I'm drawn to intellectual and creative endeavors. -
Best? Anything half-decent is the best thing ever since it exists and is okay. Worst? "//TODO" or fucking nothing entirely. (Alternatively: paid-only "please buy this hardcover book" docs!)2

Hi all. I just have a quick question. Why is Wordpress so hated in the web development community? Is it not considered "real@ development? As someone who is decent in HTML and CSS, should I use Wordpress to make websites or just stick to HTML and CSS (trying to learn JS at the moment)14
-
Most of these windows lovers here exist just because windows haters don't have a solid reason and follow up on those who actually do have good reasons to hate windows.
Moral of the story: Don't hate windows just because you think all the devs hate it. Come up with some decent reasons to avoid gamers and microsoft warriors from crushing your rant.23 -
I'd like to work for a small software house that pays decent, understands a life/work balance (40hr/wk), has a relaxed environment, worries more about the end product than timelines, and gives you Fridays to work on pet projects and training.

Guy advertises job. Decent pay, decent benefits, all in all decent package.
Guy replies to request for further information with some shit about being able to get you 50 calls from people who will hire you but would you want to work for them... well that's why i didn't apply to 50 jobs you applied to the 1, because it sounded like you would want to work for them.
Then guy says they are paying a lot less than avertised, and the advert is basically bullshit to get him people to give his 50 opportunities shit to.2 -

Pretty sure my team isn't following best practices in terms of managing state with redux and react... We are already having to rewrite most of the project because they were mutating the state EVERYWHERE. Glad they got the css looking decent so they could hide behind that for a couple of months.7

Having hard time to make my friend understand that you don't need to build everything from scratch and we can get started for free with commercial solutions for speech recognition and only pay when we have a decent userbase. The worst part is he doesn't believe it even when it is clearly written on the website.3

Forcing all your package dependencies to one specific version because you are afraid of incompatibilities is like building a scyscraper from pure concrete because wood isn't strong enough. Sounds like a decent idea at first but leads to a brittle, fragile structure that won't last very long.3

Trying to use a certain library for my ORM needs. It seems that the devs 'forgot' to add decent documentation.
Also trying out another library to integrate with it. Again, no decent documentation.
It pisses me off how A LOT of Node.js libraries have the worst documentation ever, and if they do have some seemingly okay ones, they conveniently leave out the more complex functionalities. What do they want to achieve here? For people to head to their Github pages to sniff at the code?
Holy fucking shit. I hate you people. I even hate having to use these in the first place. -
I've always was curious why people debating about mostly two code formatting types
for(;;)
{
//somestuff

or
for(;;){
//somestuff
}
while almost no one uses pretty decent IMO type like
for(;;){
//somestuff
//somemorestuff} (with tabs ofc)
It might be easier to forget some }s, but other than that it seems pretty nice to me13 -
Curious to know what devRant thinks about a macbook air (newest model) with i5 and 8 gb ram for a developer.

Minecraft modding, in general, is badly documented. The documentation for the major modding APIs, for instance, is probably SOMEWHERE, but it's hard to find and often outdated.
