There are people in my workplace who ask "why did you set your IDE to dark theme?". How do I convince them that turning off the lights above my cubicle, lowering the screen brightness and having a dark theme is the best thing ever to concentrate?
Not to mention earbuds and a hoodie.
How do I convince them that once you turn to the Dark Side, there's no coming back?6 -
Got annoyed by the super bright default theme of the Arduino IDE. Decided to make a dark theme for it! Turned out pretty well!
Unfortunately there is no official way of themeing right now, therefore I had to edit some files in the program's directory, which was a pain in the ass to do... (and kinda scary)
I tried to adapt the Material Theme in Sublime Text btw.

I started using dark theme in all IDE I use just today.. all those years I was using Light theme !9 -
(I wrote most of this as a comment in reply about Microsoft buying GitHub on another rant but decided to move it here because it is rant worthy. Also, no, I'm not a Microsoft employee nor do I have any Microsoft stock).
Microsoft buying GitHub makes sense. They contribute more to the open source community on GitHub than any other company. (Side note, they also contribute/have contributed to the Linux Kernel).
Steve Ballmer isn't running the show anymore. Because of that, we have awesome things like:
* Visual Studio Code - Completely free and powerful light weight IDE for coding in just about any script or language. This IDE is also open source, hosted on GitHub. It can be installed on Win/Mac/Linux.
* Visual Studio Community Edition: fully featured flagship IDE free for solo developers and students, can be installed on Win/Mac.
* Fully featured Sql Server running in a Docker container.
* .Net Core, which can be compiled to native binaries of Windows, MacOS AND Linux. You can't even do that with Java, you have to first have the JVM installed in order to run any kind of Java code on any of those operating systems. .Net Core is also an absolutely beautiful framework with so many features at your disposal.

Yes, they've done bonehead things in the past but who/which company hasn't. Yes, they have Cortana. Yes, they force Bing on you when searching with Cortana (does anyone actually regularly use Cortana? Or Bing?). Yes, their operating system costs money. Yes, their malware-style Upgrade-to-Windows-10 tactics were evil and they admitted such. Yes, they brought ads and other unfortunate things to Skype. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about that Skype bit translating over into GitHub. BUT, the fact that so many of their employees use GitHub daily means they are dogfooding the platform, which is a positive thing.
Despite the flaws, from the perspective of a software engineer they really should be given a lot of credit for all these new directions they are moving in now. They directly aim to help and contribute to the developer community. Plus, Windows 10 is finally getting a dark theme! haha.
I think Microsoft buying GitHub makes a lot of sense. Of course do what you want about it, feel how you want about it, but casting the same ol' shade at them for anything they do seems a bit like automatic reflex more than anything else.
I'm bracing myself for the impending wave of angry hornets from the nest I just kicked. In all seriousness though, I welcome discussion on the topic even if you feel differently than I do. I'm not saying there's no reason to dislike them, just saying there are lots of new reasons to hate them less and/or appreciate what they are doing now.19 -

My buddy developer sitting beside me turns away for a discussion. I quickly grabbed his laptop, changed the IDE theme to dark and places it just like it was before.
It took him 15 mins to realize what I have done :P.

Went to see my brother today. Before I could say hi, I saw the following:
- Desktop, Windows playing video
- Thinkpad, Linux mint, Arduino IDE
- Arduino board with some sensors
- Coffee
- Complaining about light theme
I've only thought him a bit of C# and SQL. They grow up so fast :')
(Before today, I only knew he was gonna learn Python)3 -
So I finally decided to get a theme for sublime (And other packages). I'm loving it. Post your IDE/Text editors or whatever you use to code.

Never forget to switch your IDE from light theme to dark theme when you're hacking and back when you code well-behaved code!7

Visual Studio Code and the Edge browser , so I'm finally trying a new browser and an IDE after years and I can't begin to explain how good of a job M$ has done on these software ... they deserve some applause atleast for now , their browser is pretty darn fast and has a dark theme! The IDE was exactly what I dream of in my sleep (figure of speech) .
Simply amazing , claps to them unless they have some hidden monetization scheme that will come forth over time .9 -

So.
After spending almost the whole day to get a project to usable state (VM/git setup etc.) I think that I´m finally getting done, and then it hits me.
I STILL NEED TO CHANGE MY IDE´S THEME TO DARK. PREFERABLY AS DARK AS MY SOUL TORMENTED BY THIS VERY PROJECT.
And I also need to copy my code templates from another project.1 -
Visual Studio Code - ever since the beta.
VS Code is... amazing. There's no words to describe it. It's just amazing.
VSCode since the inception was just this tiny version of Visual Studio that you can transform into your own little IDE. That was the whole point of VSCode - it was a extensible editor. For many years I've used it and never looked back, I still use VS from time to time but Microsoft really nailed this one.
Most of the editors I knew lacked good auto completion and good linting, which IntelliSense was good, and it became even greater once support for languages started piling up. Themes also were top notch, I still remember you can't theme the entire window just the editor, nowadays you can.
And last but not the least is the Remote integration. I didn't need to leave my OS just to do work from another, I just need a SSH agent and it works. It's very straightforward and easy.
Overall Visual Studio Code is a editor that is more about choice and your own style - which makes it unique from IDEs, its fresh and its definitely earned its place as one of the most sought after tools in development.3 -
I really hate when I have to go to a colleuges desk to help when they need some troubleshooting . It is not because I don't want to help. It is just because of their light themed IDE.3

Today I was working in a university studyspace. Some girl noticed my dark theme IDE, running some tests and such and assumed that I'm a computer guru. She then asked me if I could help her with MS Excel or MS Word. To which I answered "sorry, no". She might've just been trying to start something with me, but that was a deal breaker hahaha (seriously tho, if I were in a better mood I would have helped her)8

I have a confession. I have always used IDLE because I love it. It's slow, lacks a number of features, and is just all-around outdated.
So today I went and I got rid of it. I tried PyCharm in the past but it was too complicated for Python. I like JetBrain's IDE for Java, but not for Python. Instead, this time, I opted for Spyder. I tend to get quite excited about new IDEs, and I do like this one a fair bit. The editor offers a dark theme but the UI surrounding it does not. This is offensive, but acceptable, for the time being. Here's a screenshot. Any thoughts?

I love my adhd kicks. My webstorm trial ended, I downloaded vscode, hated the bindings, I then used thr intellij extension. Everything ok expect autocomplete, not a fan of tab, couldn't use enter to enter enter as a binding. Hacked that binding.json, idk how i ended up installing a json sorter extension, ow theres a imports sorter. Okay what exactly i wanted to do? Right, do my niche site. Bad idea, i had written it in kotlin js, (missing intellij already) so i searched for almost non-scripting framework. Idk what happened...i ended up being interested in tailwind. Tried it a bit, ow they have tailwind ui. Thinking about buying the sweet shit. Ow i see headless UI... Pause, threw tailwind out. Thinking about react, met Solid, loved it, yarned and npmed it. Extension time, auto tag rename, more emmet like shit, rainbow and fira fonts, theme, scheme, ow colors whaaaw. Okay, its not gonna look like or feel like intellij, more like IDEA community if i had made the ide. What was i making again? Ah my webcrapp. still (idea)less... I went to codepen, grew a beard, came out, still feeling powerfully uncreative. Last stop: awwwards.. ow that awesome 7up nl site, imma see it, they nuked the animations, everything. This is where the rant actually ends, because THANK GOD I DONT FULLSTACK FOR A LIVING!!! Swift, Kotlin, XML and unpredictable Gradle is good enough for me to stop me from going wild. Stay safe. NetBeans by far. Small footprint, open source, not owned/managed by mass surveillance company/party and pretty much everything else I expect from a good IDE.

Somehow managed to create my own theme for my IDE. Unfortunately didn't implement the highlight feature for semicolons, arrows, comma etc. (totally forgot about it)
Applied it super excitedly and started writing code.
Some lines later a simple loc generated error. Spent nearly 5 hours on fixing the issue. Later realized what was actually missing.

Put down another developer because of not using the dark theme or for not using the “latest and greatest” IDE! Like it makes a difference to anyone’s ability to develop 🙄1

Why do apps dont keep the black theme as default!??
From any ide to Twitter to even devrant!
Black theme looks so cool.. Why not just set it as the default one! Most users switch to it eventually anyways.

tl;dr: What dark theme are you using in IntelliJ?
After seeing how easy it is for my coworker to do refactoring in IntelliJ, its git integration, some Emacs-like features in it, and generally because he made me believe it's an all-in-one IDE (is that right?), I'm considering leaving Sublime for IntelliJ.
The thing that's stopping me though is that I'm not able to find a good Monokai color scheme for it. I am using Boxy Monokai theme in sublime, and it's just awesome.

The moment you realize you've spent years in a technology where the "IDE":
- isn't too good at finding references, unless the project is tiny
- is not capable to do any sort of refactoring (or at least you shouldn't trust it due to the point above)
- doesn't let you connect to any version control
- doesn't allow to CTRL+Z or any equivalent
- I won't even mention templates or dark theme
Guess the name. Feel free to tell me how utterly stupid this is so maybe I'll finally work on changing my path before it's too late.13 -
While most of the developers like to work on an IDE with dark theme, I still prefer my code to be on a white background.

I don't get why people use light theme on their IDE/browser/etc.. I mean its painful to see.
I use dark mode on everything, even the Google main page with a custom CSS.
also I don't know why, as my experience, people with light theme tend to be smarter than we darksiders.

Couple days ago, I started working on online IDE using https://ace.c9.io/ .. All the functions they have are good, but documentation wasn't that good and I had to learn things by my own. I customized a theme for it to look more like atom lol, added snippet menus and some other stuff, but thinking about it the reason I started is that i saw Thimble by Mozilla and felt jealous because it looks so cool, and I want to make some thing like it.8

holy crap! i really am used to light themed ide. for some reason i played around last time and left it dark. now i just used it for twenty minutes. then i found the color scheme kind of strange and wanted to switch back to good old light theme.
seems i have to get used to the new colour scheme. ouch.
