My dad found a phone a few weeks ago and asked me what he should do with it. Knowing how much it hurts to lose personal data, I said I could try to find the owner and send it back.
My first attempt was to search through the files on the SD card in order to find an identifying document (CV, bill, address...) but there were only family pictures.
My second attempt was to unlock the phone and check the information about the owner and the accounts linked to it. But for this to be possible adb has to be enabled. Good thing is that that particular brand shows an option for activating adb on the recovery menu.
But then, it's Android Oreo and I haven't found a way to lift the lock pattern. I thought I could bruteforce it over the shell (as I found there could be about 1300 possibilities for 2 to 5 point patterns), but there is the same attempt throttling as on the screen so that would take ages.
Finally, I found the owner in the most "social" way : The phone was displaying the weather for a particular place. It turns out that there are only 3K inhabitants in that city, si I thought that a big enough Facebook group might help me find the owner. So I posted a message on a 500 people FB group dedicated to this city with a selfie of the owner : someone identified her within 20 minutes.
Mission accomplished 😎42 -
So I'm learning 2D game dev in java.
(I know)
Being stubborn I'm coding everything myself because, you know who needs libraries.😅
And
Holy toenails ,I have mad respect for the guys who build game engines. Especially 3d engines.
Y'all are beasts.28 -
Just today I noticed how Android Oreo (8.1) on my Nexus 6P can actually see my Bluetooth headset's remaining battery capacity. I didn't even know that my headset could send out this information! Windows never presented this information to me, and neither did my tablet which runs Nougat 7.0. Apparently there's multiple implementations of that battery level reporting too.. so lack of support in Microsoft's driver makes sense. Especially given that the Bluetooth standard already counts several thousands of pages. Compare that to Wi-Fi which is far more complex (with - some of - its 7 OSI layers, 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies, MIMO etc) which counts only 400-ish pages. I'm surprised that Google actually supports this Bluetooth battery reporting at all.. implementing all the standards must've been quite the chore.
TL; DR: Bluetooth is an overengineered piece of shit, and is in dire need of refactoring.26 -
So apparently the Android O mascot is female... Look, Google it's great your trying to be diversified but... It's an Oreo... A fucking Oreo...
(And this is coming from a Google fan boy)6 -
When you get a system update and think it's Oreo, but it's just a security update. Fuck you Lenovo5

I find it od that 3 of the most hated languages on devrant are part of the top five most in demand languages?

This parallel Apps feature on Android Oreo is so funny.
I created parallel WhatsApp, signed up using my second sim, and called my 1st sim on WhatsApp.
WhatsApp = blown!5 -
Android oreo made me change so much code and broke so much shit like background services that my latest branch in git is FuckAndroidOBranch6
-
I wanted an Android phone with latest Oreo version, atleast 4gb RAM, 32gb or more with good processor supporting 4G dual SIM with a resolution of 1440 pixels by 2560 pixels at US$ 100.
Well got for all of it for US$125.
I went to LineageOS site, exported and filtered all supported devices with my relevant device attributes.
Got LeEco LeMax 2 for US125$ on eBay. Installed latest LineageOS 15.1 with Android 8.1.0. got 25gb free space.
Using the phone for last 10 days, flawlessly.22 -
Fuck Android Oreo and everyone who thought that the following ideas are useful:
- xy app is running in the background notification, which can't be disabled
- xy app is overlaying other apps, click here if you wish to disable it. But you can't disable the notification, you can only disable the app.
- the un-zeroable data limit. It can't be disabled, you can only set it to a retarded high number to avoid annoying notifications
Go suck a veiny one Android devs. Fucking cunt faces.13 -

Just published vscode extension to auto transform object accessors to nullable / safer accessors (&& chain).
search for “vscode-oat” in marketplace.
Looking for feedbacks :)10 -
Just got the Oreo 8.0 update for my OnePlus 5T. Yay!
But it broke something, so now I can't debug my app with Xamarin... 😐
Luckily there's already a bugreport on their bugzilla! It seems like it's been fixed. Just need to update Visual Studio. Guess I'm lucky after all. 😁
...
The problem is still there... 😡
Don't know what to do now... 😕5 -
So I installed Nougat yesterday on my OPO as some apps n Google seem to not like CM 13...
It runs so fast and smooth... Not sure why but kinda feels like I got a new phone 😄😄
Wonder what it'll be like if I ever get to upgrade to Oreo... 🤔🤔🤔🤔
And it seems it likes attracting cats14 -
Android Oreo went to the light side.
Why would they do that?
The dark side is much more fun 👹
I hope they add an option later on....2 -
Oh that looks pretty let me try.
Ow God why !!
....
Ah....that makes sense
Obsess over it for months
Make failed side projects with it.

Just discovered Chocolatey and how it installs stuff through a command line. FINALLY AN EASIER WAY TO INSTALL JDK, ANDROID SDK AND ALL THAT!!!1

Going back to java after over a year of c and cpp.
System.out.println("yeah I still got this");
System.in......what was the console object called again1 -
Using the Facebook Messenger thing on a recently updated Android 8 (finally, Huawei pieces of rotten eggs) is a friggin' pain in the starhole. For the life of me I can't seem to fudging remove this damn useless notification popping up... (pic)
It's more intrusive than the app itself... D:
I guess I'll need to trash the app then.. Good fucking riddance!12 -
Why the fuck does Android's SyncAdapter stop working without ANY notice since API level 26 when available storage is low?
They fucking deprecated the system-wide broadcast that the storage is getting too full to properly work. And there's no replacement!!! 😠 No callback. No exception. Nothing. You ask the SyncAdapter to sync and it will just not do it until some storage is freed.... 😭 -
Hated that Android 8.0 (Oreo) and above for killing backend Services very effectively without giving a proper documentation on how to handle it or how to properly maintain and restart the Service without the user to turn on the app. Digging solutions for months and still till today I am totally clueless...8
-
So... Got upgraded to android 8.1
First impression... Dark theme ? (my dark background may help),
Everything got darker.
Second, folders are ugly as fuck (rounded, cutting half the icons) .
And third : fuck shit got fast.
If I tought my phone had no lag I was wrong... Now it starts apps instantly (plus the app launch time) it also got preetyer, looks like a hologram again the background.
Me approves.

Checking new features now but nothing really important1 -
My OP5 got a system update to Android Oreo today. FUCK YOU Google for removing the cute blob emojis! I'm not using emojis that often, hell I normally wouldn't care at all, but the new ones are so ugly I wanna rip my eyeballs out everytime I see them. I already miss those adorable blobby bastards so much that I'm considering going back to Nougat :(
By the way: hello Devrant and the best wishes for 2018 to everyone!2 -
How would you guys feel if your favorite app gave you 3 monetization options.

Rip wallet , some privacy concerns, happy cpu.
Thoughts?6 -
Got the update to Android Oreo on my S7 edge yesterday.
I love it. It made my phone work so much faster(really, so much!). Everything is smoother and new cool featured have been added, the UI looks incredybly modern and nice.
But there is one BIG disadvantage.
The batteryusage is terrible now. In bad times my phone lost 7%-8% in a half an our. I heard that they had the same issue when the s8 got the update to android oreo.
Pls samsung you are my favourite phone company. Fix it, it is driving me crazy!!!1 -
Started refactoring our app with Android Architecture Components 1 week ago.
Now Android Oreo is released and I don't have to worry about breaking changes anymore.
Yaaasssss! -
Have any other nexus 6P users experienced battery and performance issues when upgrading to android O?
I love this phone and I'm not ready to admit it may be on its way out.... Denial is bliss sometimes4 -
I know javascript now, should i continue with it and learn deeper dom manupilation and es6 or start learning a framework like angular or react - nodejs? If yes wich framework to atart with3
-
Just putting it out there..
I absolutely abhor the gesture navigation and new recents app UI on android Pie.
Doesn't make upgrading from oreo to pie on non-rooted phones worth it. (that recent apps view is horrendous)
I thought of writing a post describing in details why this is so bad. But I am too lazy to do anything so fuck it. -
I always knew it:
A bird? A plane? No, it's Android Oreo.

That superhero appereance. 😎
They seem to overhype it but its so ridiculous that its actually great again.1 -

I've been an android/anti-ios person for around a decade and im now seriously considering switching to ios when the new iphones land. My mother is an apple nut and my brother is on android and everytime i bring up even the slightest nitpick about ios or macos (such as the fact that the "always use this application" checkbox on macos does not work or that you have to upload music through itunes) they jump on the "wtf then why would even consider it??????" train. In short its because ios seems at least a little bit more stable overall (havent had much experience with ios in general this is really more of a first impression). Well I got a replacement LG V20 just over a year ago and it has not aged well, had to replace the battery because i barely got 4 hours with minimal usage, even when i got the thing it was rather jittery, and its just now getting oreo (and surely wont be getting pie). Hell i was removing several apps earlier and it took a solid 4 MINUTES to uninstall an icon pack. After some investigation into the ios ecosystem i found that all the apps that i would need are on there so that was great. What im really hoping for though is some stability/longevity, im ok with paying around 1000 for a phone if it lasts a while and stays in decent shape. Finally the fact that the updates are sparing at best (with the exception of pixel phones) is a great annoyance whereas my mothers (around 4 years old) ipad is rocking ios 11. Could someone who has made the leap make a recommendation? I love android but i feel like all i would accomplish is buying another phone that craps out after less than a year.7

How does one convert an .img system image for Android to the format readable by Heimdall on Linux... Only thing I found so far requires Windows... Why make Heimdall if you need Windows anyway to make the image... Just use Odin on Windows then... Any ideas? Don't have Windows... And all I need is to read a bloody logfile (btsnoop_hci.log). Thanks, "secure" Android Oreo!!!4
