1. Android was released in September 2008 so finding anyone with 10 years experience now would have to be a Google engineer.
2. UIKit, CoreData, CoreFoundation are all iOS frameworks
3. Grand Central Dispatch is an iOS mechanism for multithreading and is not in Android
4. There are JSON parsing frameworks, no one does that by hand anymore

Open source for the win!

Working on a new awesome project and found an open source android app which does most of what I need. realized that one of its features is very annoying for me so was sitting behind my desk like fuck me.

........ Suddenly remembered that the app was open source.

Cloned the repo, imported into Android studio, rewrote the part (very tiny part, I'm not a Java dev) that needed rewriting and built the app.

Installed it onto my device through adb and bam, works! (Although not ideally yet but I overlooked other features needing adjustment).

I had an intern in for VBA programming on day one they realized that they were in need of an android dev, so the boss came to me and asked if I had any experience with android. I replied with yes a little, I had begun multiple projects but never finished only one of them. After 4 weeks of developing I presented my progress a pretty ugly but working app, after the meeting the boss told me that a other team of devs were building the same app but didn't made any progress in 1.5 years.

We needed a design for our Android and iOS App, everything should be done by an award-winning design agency. What we received was only a design for iPhone X. Only mockups as PDF, no icons, nothing. So we requested the Android design and an iPhone 8 one including icons, color codes and whatnot.

1 FUCKING MONTH LATER we got the new designs... They are all the FUCKING SAME DESIGN where some mockups were "displayed" on an android phone, and some on an iPhone. Still no icons though.

3 weeks pass and we geht FUCKING sketch files, to extract the shit ourselves. Thank you for nothing.

It took again nearly 3 month to get a "proper" Android design and all the assets. You could clearly see, that they never did anything for Android but well, we had to work with it. Award-winning design agancy my ass.

Finally bought a macbook for my android app development. Paid 1600 EUR for 2015 MID mbpro with 512GB SSD, 16gb ram, 2.5ghz quad core i7 cpu and dedicated gpu. Kotlin support on Android:
i never liked Java, not because of the language but for the usual bad design implementations and Android is one of those.
Then Kotlin arrived, it looked very promising but it's when i looked at Coroutines that it simply blew my mind:
you just have to write your code and the Kotlin's compliler "magic" will do most of the boring/complex stuff for you and it's even great performance wise!
I even refactored inter-process calls to simple sync functions with few like of code and for a non-android developer like me it's just love at first sight!

The good part is with each update Android studio gets more and more powerful with more and more features.
The sad part work each update Android studio gets heavier and even the basic feature is a pain in the ass to work with

Worked on an Android app that synchronized contacts. Didn't consider the contact id may change, leading to (rare) cases of properties being synchronized to the wrong contacts. Only found out later in production when one of my frequent contacts called - and my phone showed a wrong profile picture for him.

Because I know java I tried it myself, and Android studio is one of the worst programms I've ever seen.

My app crashed the whole time, just because my studio version was 1 behind. Updated studio, everything worked.

My layout wasn't showing correctly, reopened Studio, all layouts deleted.

For no good reason video views aren't resizing, so I need to use exoplayer.

One video on my platform nearly crashes the app when creating a thumbnail.

And so one....

I fucking hate Android studio...

Site's on port 21 because that's one of my school firewall's few allowed outbound ports, and I couldn't use 80/443 since a webpage is already running there.

Constraint Layout is the best thing Google has ever made for responsive Android design, when it works.

Half the time it suddenly stops finding any elements I want to attach my selected one to, so it can't constrain what I want it to constrain.

It's 3am, just submitted an app for review for iOS... go to take one last test drive on the release build for android, and I get stuck in an infinite loop of "system up stopped working". An factory reset and an hour later, I'm saying fuck this, android waits, and fuck whatever Xamarin did to my phone. While I'm at it, fuck Apple for making me have 20+ icons in different sizes, and their shitty walled garden approach to a so called marketplace.

Just realised one thing. Every single time I have IntelliJ IDEA or Android Studio opened, Chrome of Firefox are just, like really fast. But as soon as I close IntelliJ or Studio, the browsers are slow as hell.

Developing on Android and came across an issue that only seemed to be happening on one of our devices.
A fair bit of time was spent trying to figure out why the hell one resource (image) wasn't available even though it was clearly there in the project and was working on all other devices.

Turns out the image in question was in the drawable-v24 folder on accident so of course wasn't working on the one device running Android version 21 🤦 at least it was an easy fix

Why is Google so annoying? Download the latest version of Android Studio,, create an empty application from their template, build the empty APK and try to upload it to Google Play. Turns out the template for new app in Android Studio is set to use Experimental SDK, not accepted by Play Console.

Just started an android O development course on Udemy and decided to use my Arch installation (surprisingly Linux was the easiest one to set up) even though the course said Mac or windows only..

But holy fuck does android studio fly on Linux, it's so fast compared to being run on the same machine under windows...

Got to love Google. This years IO 2018 has been one of my best. So many new tools for developers to become successful. Android & its new set of tools like Android Jetpack & the immense love Kotlin is receiving its gonna be an awesome year for Android programmers & Kotlin as a language.

I'm a self taught android/Java developer, I have never been to any boot camps. But I have worked with someone who been to one.

It is good for developers who already know the concept of programming and want to improve their skills.

I don't want to start any wars in the comments, but what do you devs prefer: iOS or Android?

I'm not saying one is better. I'm just genuinely curious what other devs use. I prefer to use Android because I can do more with my phone.

I'm actually curious what most of you use, so feel free to tag other ranters you know in the comments. I've already commented the few I could come up with off the top of my head.

Trello's android app doesn't give you the option to choose a board when you make a widget. It just picks one itself based on seemingly arbitrary requirements. Thankfully, trello has a brilliant open API, so there are several capable third party apps.

Firefox doesn't map correctly the controller (Xbox One) but it works on Chrome. (FF on Android Works)

Just updated my Android one device to Android 10. Ughh, the worst design in the history of Android. Weird status bar icons, ugly fonts and worst possible color combination choices for both dark and light themes.

Google should go back to its colorful lollypop material designs instead of making more and more robotic icons :/

With Google Maps it takes 150-200Mb.

After years of procrastination and pushing myself. I’ve finally managed to breath life into my app.

It was a journey of 3 years coding it in android launching it to my community. Then almost competing writing the iOS app. Play store taking down the android app for 64bit BS and me not finding time to support both platforms amidst my hectic day job.

Finally scrapped both the codebase and re-wrote everything in flutter.

Phewwwwwww.

Anyways, Feels good man.

Can anyone transitioned from eclipse adb to android studio actually work with the damn studio?

The eclipse plugin was one hella glitchy but working with it was easy and clear. The Studio makes every fucking simple thing to science.😅

Last night I was up until 3am because the fucking unity and the fucking Android SDK can't put together an structure without mi intervention.

It appears that since SDK 23 Google decided to move some libraries from tools to build-tools, but unity keeps trying to find that library in tools, obviously this error doesn't have any specific documentation and i spend around 5 hours downloading SDKs and trying to figure out what happen, till I found one tiny post in unity forum with only one answer.

I mean, on one side, this has changed since android 23 and the folks in unity can't change his fucking compiler yet, and on the other side, why the fuck Google change libraries from one place to another

Also, as a note to Google, your new system for SDK-only download its super shitty and full of problems, I don't know why you change it.

I've been reading a lot about companies moving towards implementing a one-person policy. Like, one person is end-to-end responsible for the backend, one person for android app, one for iOS app and so on.

They also call it "lean teams. Less people, less discussions, less bullshit"

This is seriously scary because essentially it's telling devs "We will underpay you and overwork you as we wish. And you can't leave us because other companies have implemented their one person policy so u ain't getting hired anywhere else."

Can someone please explain why android studio (including emulator, but still) plus a couple of firefox tabs and windows 10 occupy the ~8.7GB of RAM that are 74% of the 12 gigs I have? Especially since summing up the ram in use by applications according to task manager makes it look like only 3gb. Is Android Studio using some dark magic to conceal its RAM usage? What the hell!

Between android studio and Unity, which one si better to make a adventure text game? Why? (i'm learning, dont kill me please)

For me, well I'm not good at any language now... Was preety good at visual basic 6 back in the day and stopped codding for years.
I'm looking at python with kivy for multi platform (all... And I mean all, even blackberry) but I just can't get the shit to work for multiscreens... Due to my lack of knowledge on how to andle children (but love kids)....
Also droidscript and kotlin for Android but both are limitimed to android (as far as I know, don't know if kotlin have gui for windows /mac/Linux)

I use two arrangement

1. Smart Stack on the left and 4 related apps on right with stack showing the relevant data from one of the 4 apps

It drives me nuts when people compare iPhones to Samsung, not realizing that Samsung did not invent Android, nor are they the only phone manufacturer or Android OS distributor.

If you're comparing iOS to Android, that's one thing. Or if you are comparing iPhone's hardware to a specific Samsung phone's hardware, I get it. Heck, I'm cool if you compare the iPhone X to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, because they're similar in price. But don't say that Apple is better than Samsung when you mean you have an issue with Android, or your battery life on your $300 Android device wasn't as good as your $700 iPhone. Apples to oranges guys! It's like comparing Visual Studio 2015 to Python.

Does anyone have problems with Android instant run?

Fucking hell, I spent one hour yesterday debugging an error, until I noticed that the code in the APK wasn't updated, because it was sending an error of a non-existent line.

Sometimes it works okay, but damn...

And then one day I make a change in the API request params in the android app and guess what the iOS app crashes on open :/

Yeah, the newest Firefox-Android update killed compatibility for a fuckton of add-ons once again.

I was hired as an Android Developer. Now, being a Windows Phone/Mobile User but coming from Android this wasn't a problem.
Working with Android really convinced me what a piece of garbage that OS is. 50% of the code are fixes for stuff that SHOULD work and DO work on other OSes just not on Android. Often times I got in trouble for Apps crashing due to the Android Phone itself failing it's job which I of course can't fix. Sadly, I'm only trained in Android and Windows Development and no one wants a Windows App, so I'm still stuck with this underpayed job which makes me sad!

Is there a devRant client for android that works better then the official one? I saw devRant native, i love the animations but sadly its incomplete.

I am one year experienced Android developer... just got an opportunity to work as a game developer in the same company(they will provide training)... I'm in dilemma whether to accept or no.. Is it safe to keep on changing fields😟

Android emulator would be the worst one for me. To be honest, I haven't used that many dev tech yet, but this thing gave me nightmares.
The one provided by Android Studio sucked ass horribly, and it didn't let me use my dedicated graphics chip (nVidia 740m). If I used it the emulator either my apps would crash or not start at all. After some googling, I found out that this was a common thing more or less...Using virtual graphics on it was slow, sluggish and rubbish with ~1 second delay with clicks and scrolling and shitty screen changes proccessing.
Using Genymotion was no better so I just stuck with the one provided by Google for the time being.
I have to add that most of those apps were tutorial apps, and only 2 were semi-serious.

Wen I got my first Android phone I came across a make your own Android app ad with one of those "no programing experience needed drag and drop interface" I made a few news feed apps then got completely hooked,then I thought "I want to control everything within the app and not only drag and drop stuff" that thought changed my life.I started learning phonegap and started making Android apps with html5 ,put ADs on and published them to the play store.I then expanded my knowledge learnt Java,mysql,php,wordpress.

Every time I open devRant, I have >0 Notifs. Why am I never notified by Android about this anymore? I used to get one Android notification for each devRant notif in the list. Now, my phone never goes off for any of them and nothing from devRant appears in my android notifications. I did not change my settings. Running latest app version on Android 6.

When you comment on a rant and then press Modify to change your comment, when you edit and save the edited comment you get to the updated one. If you press back you get to the previous one (not updated comment). If you try to reopen the rant you commented you see only the updated one.

Joined a company 7 months back, was told they would be hiring other Android developers; a prospect I was excited by as I have not had the chance to work alongside my own kind.

Still no one hired, I'm the only Android dev and I'm still teach and working by myself. What should I do?!

So finally I am getting started with Android apps. Ubuntu make claims they install the whole Dev stack for you in one operation. Except you need another jdk. Then know how to tell Android Studio where to find it. Oh, and there's an issue with IBus. And some stuff with LibGL. And X.

So today I was asked to make a 2 programs, one to send socket data to the Android either through wireless or through the USB and the program on the Android to receive that data and send an SMS according to the data .....

Through Wireless was working like a charm, through USB required to use the adb to do some forwarding ... done that and the Android keep's receiving the data without any info inside .... after a few hours of searching and 0 info (even asked on stackoverflow 0 anwsers) so I just decided to insert a System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(250); after the Connection is done when its chosen the Cable on the GUI ... and now its working -.-

It is horrible to navigate in android cause when u press the shift keys more than twice the sticky keys windows pops up. Frustrated but the one friend recommended me using fedora cause it's Linux based Android Studio works fast .and now I can press the shift keys as many times I want oooooya baby I can do that shit u windows

There is IntelliJ and AndroidStudio. I know that IntelliJ is mainly for Java Desktop Development but I've heard that it can be used for Android development too. Android Studio is clunky. Which one is better for lightweight Android development? Oh, and why is AndroidStudio not in the JetbrainsToolbox?

One of my friend was working in Android and he used to tell me at that time Cross Platform wouldn't work as native languages are the best.

Now he is working on flutter and he tell me React Native/ Ionic wouldn't work as in next year flutter will be on the top !!?!

That horrible, dreadful, feeling when your openvpn server is not working as intended anymore, and yet you can't remember what was the last thing you changed a few weeks ago.
Even worse, one client seems to still work just fine, while another seems completely broken.

My trusty Moto Z Play doesn't seem to be supported by Lineage anymore, so I might need to get a new one.

Fucked up my old phone (picked up an overheating phone with super cold hands and the screen exploded) and my new one is way faster despite having almost exactly 1/2 the CPU power (8-core 2.13GHz in old, 4-core 1.4GHz in this one) due entirely to the Android build not being dogshit. They both only have 2GB of RAM, so i'm still sitting at like 300MB of free RAM with nothing running, but it's a start.

Hello. (Android) dev here contemplating about the future of my profession.

I am looking for a specialization or a field in my profession where i can be free of dependencies from GAFAM (The big five)
Basically software development is me only using dependencies and stuff they and 3rdparty people have created and then it works or it doesnt. Or if you dont keep it up2date it wont work because deprecation and breaking changes. I was web developer before and changed to android because of all the libs and frameworks one needed to wield for proper development. And now android has mostly become the same. Vanilla android is easy, but u start using google apis or 3rdparty services u quickly realize how far u get away from your actual usecase. Usermanagement, oauth, 2fa, userdatamanagement, crossplattform, offline, syncing etc.

I am pretty sure the topic came up before (dev fatigue, dependency fatigue) and most of you know what i mean but i might be the recent casualty here.

Got the update to Android Oreo on my S7 edge yesterday.
I love it. It made my phone work so much faster(really, so much!). Everything is smoother and new cool featured have been added, the UI looks incredybly modern and nice.
But there is one BIG disadvantage.
The batteryusage is terrible now. In bad times my phone lost 7%-8% in a half an our. I heard that they had the same issue when the s8 got the update to android oreo.
Pls samsung you are my favourite phone company. Fix it, it is driving me crazy!!!

Android vs IPhone? Which one do you like most and why?

I once had to install a Mac OS VM for a school project. I tried customizing one simple thing in the boot options and I was meet with a green screen with an apple support phone number, no debug options. FML. We ended up begging the TA to do Android app instead, and we did :)

Been working on an Android app for some time. Silly me too lazy to use VCS. Anyway, one day android studio just could not build my project and errors that should not be errors popped up everywhere and nothing I did fixed the problem. Somehow my project got corrupted. 3 hours later of googling and trying to recover my project I had to resort to creating a new project and manually port the old files in one by one :( but all I have to say is WHAT THE FUCK ANDROID STUDIO
