It happened to one of my friend at work place.
So my friend is a UI developer and was working on a super critical project with very tight deadline. He was waiting for design team to give him mocks and web api team for giving Apis, so he can start his work. Now there are 4 days left for deadline and none of the parties are ready with their work, and my friend is sitting idle. Management is getting anxious day by day. So one program management lady called him the weak link in the standup meeting and started putting blame on him for the delay in the project. Guy tried to explain that it's not his fault and he is stuck. But that lady was not in a mood to listen.
Now come the next day, in morning he got the design ready and complete Apis from other teams. That day he missed the standup meeting, worked whole night and completed the work with two days remaining for deadline. He went to standup meeting after completing the work, and when the turn came for him to give his status, he started with "the weak link has finished the work". There was a pin drop silent in the room. He continued to give his update like this for next couple of days. And finally that lady was forced to apologize in meeting room by him.7
Someday my toaster is going to have an IP address. A bad automatic firmware update will most likely cause it to get stuck on the bagel setting until I plug a usb key in and reflash the memory.
Grandma's refrigerator will probably get viruses, lock itself and freeze all the food inside, demanding bitcoin before defrosting.
My blender will probably be used in a massive DDoS attack because Ninja's master MAC address list got leaked and the hidden control panel login is admin/admin.
Ovens will burn houses down when people call in to have them preheat on their way home from work.
Correlations between the number of times the lights are turned on and how many times the toilet is flushed will yield recommendations to run the dishwasher on Thursdays because it's simply more energy efficient.
My dog will tweet when he's hungry and my smart watch will recommend diet dog food in real-time because he's really been eating too much lately--"Do you want to setup a recurring order on Amazon fresh?"
Sometimes living in a cave sounds nice...12
So was first day at new job ... Boss takes me around meeting everyone. One employee stuck editing file by typing in new records data, calls boss for help.
Boss to me: "I like to get handsy with data from time to time. "
*me smiling, watch how he copies and paste the new records*
ME to boss:"why don't you just write the script to update all the records?"
Boss:"I don't trust the automation of input. "
Me:" what about human error?"
*crowd of other employees gather around awaiting answer*
Boss:"we include margin of errors in our disclaimer to the client... "
*He hears himself*
Boss:"... and we bill by the hour why would we work faster for less money?"
*me grinning, going to remember that line next time I need extension of deadline*
Me*murmurs*:" Master has presented dobby with a sock"
*Girl in next cubicle snickers clearly caught the reference "
Going to love it here.3
> Get home for lunch, time to get some work done
> Fire up windows to program my keyboard
> WindowsUpdate, fine I can wait
> Reboot, grub rescue - no partition found
> Fire up a live CD, windows update nuked my linux partition (literally - now empty space instead of my previous ubuntu partition)
> Reinstall ubuntu
> Now stuck on «Loading operating system»
Oh well, I know what I'm doing tonight

Saturday plan: serious switch to Linux.
1. Installs Fedora, lookin nice.
2. Let's update it, fails to boot.
3. Nouveau driver fails, lets install proprietary one.
4. dnf install dependencies, repo returns 503
5. Be stuck on a 640x480 bash.
6. Boot windows, start overwatch.17
I’m back for a fucking rant.
My previous post I was happy, I’ve had an interview today and I felt the interviewer acted with integrity and made the role seem worthwhile. Fuck it, here’s the link:
So, since then; the recruiter got in touch: “smashed it son, sending the tech demo your way, if you can get it done this evening that would be amazing”
Obviously I said based on the exact brief I think that’s possible, I’ll take a look and let them know if it isn’t.
Having done loads of these, I know I can usually knock them out and impress in an evening with no trouble.
Here’s where shit gets fucked up; i opened the brief.
I was met with a brief for an MVP using best practice patterns and flexing every muscle with the tech available...
Then I see the requirements, these fucking dicks are after 10 functional requirements averaging an hour a piece.
+TDD so * 1.25,
+DI and dependency inversion principle * 1.1
+CI setup (1h on this platform)
+One ill requirement to use a stored proc in SQL server to return a view (1h)
+UX/UI design consideration using an old tech (1-2h)
+unobtrusive jquery form post validation (2h)
+AES-256 encryption in the db... add 2h for proper testing.
These cunts want me to knock 15-20h of Work into their interview tech demo.
I’ve done a lot of these recently, all of them topped out at 3h max.
The job is middling: average package, old tech, not the most exciting or decent work.
The interviewer alluded to his lead being a bit of a dick; one of those “the code comes first” devs.
Here’s where shit gets realer:
They’ve included mock ups in the tech demo brief’s zip... I looked at them to confirm I wasn’t over estimating the job... I wasn’t.
Then I looked at the other files in the fucking zip.
I found 3 of the images they wanted to use were copyright withheld... there’s no way these guys have the right to distribute these.
Then I look in the font folder, it’s a single ttf, downloaded from fucking DA Font... it was published less than 2mo ago, the license file had been removed: free for Personal, anything else; contact me.
There’s no way these guys have any rights to this font, and I’ve never seen a font redistributed legally without it’s accompanying licence files.
This fucking company is constantly talking about its ethical behaviours.
Given that I know what I’m doing; I know it would have taken less time to find free-for-commercial images and use a google font... this sloppy bullshit is beyond me.
Anyway, I said I’d get back to the recruiter, he wasn’t to know and he’s a good guy. I let him know I’d complete the tech demo over the weekend, he’s looked after me and I don’t want him having trouble with his client...
I’ll substitute the copyright fuckery with images I have a license for because there’s no way I’m pushing copyright stolen material to a public github repo.
I’ll also be substituting the topic and leaving a few js bombs in there to ensure they don’t just steal my shit.
Here’s my hypotheses, anyone with any more would be greatly welcomed...
1: the lead dev is just a stuck up arsehole, with no real care for his work and a relaxed view on stealing other people’s.
2: they are looking for 15-20h free work on an MVP they can modify and take to market
3: they are looking for people to turn down this job so they can support someone’s fucking visa.
In any case, it’s a shit show and I’ll just be seeing this as box checking and interview practice...
Arguments for 1: the head told me about his lead’s problems within 20mn of the interview.
2: he said his biggest problem was getting products out quickly enough.
3: the recruiter told me they’d been “picky”, and they’re making themselves people who can’t be worked for.
I’m going to knock out the demo, keep it private and protect my work well. It’s going to smash their tits off because I’m a fucking great developer... I’ll make sure I get the offer to keep the recruiter looked after.
Then fuck those guys, I’m fucking livid.
After a wonderful interview experience and a nice introduction to the company I’ve been completely put off...
So here’s the update: if you’re interviewing for a shitty middle level dev position, amongst difficult people, on an out of date stack... you need people to want you, don’t fuck them off.
If they want my time to rush out MVPs, they can pay my day rate.
Fuuuuuuuuck... I typed this out whilst listening to the podcast, I’m glad I’m not the only one dealing with shit.
Oh also; I had a lovely discriminatory as fuck application, personality test and disability request email sent to me from a company that seems like it’s still in the 90s. Fuck those guys too, I reported them to the relevant authorities and hope they’re made to look at how morally reprehensible their recruitment process is. The law is you don’t ask if the job can be done by anyone.8
Last year at the the Xmas party CEO slips in that he wants the app done by end of February, I freak because I thought he meant both iOS and Android (only dev working on both :/), anyways he wanted specifics for locking out specific people that haven't paid for some in-house training (like in app persons just not in the app lol) it required web development which I'm horrible at, I spend a whole week and managed to scrape together the right functions to do a user lock out, pretty all things considering.
A couple weeks before deadline I'm done :D, I've done a lot of testing, some in-house user testing, changes made all bugs visually possible are fixed.
I'm here stuck waiting at a roadblock, developing the Android app sure but for their iOS app that they want released first, I'm stuck on hold, so annoyed, it's not like I can just put on a lawyer hat and just right some shit that says don't use x unless you agree and such.
So annoying, for about 2 weeks I just played games on my phone, I was not expecting to waste that much time lol, I was really expecting the legal stuff to be ready.
Just a side note co-worker and boss that needed to get this legal stuff knew I needed to get this done, since I mentioned it leading up to my completion.
I don't think it'd take too long with Apple when it comes to the review, it's just an update but I wouldn't put my faith in that as an answer. Just hate that I'm on hold, was wanting to finish this app and apply for a new job (nothing against the company more so because I want to go a company where I could get a but of mentoring). But I sit here waiting, working on the Android app, it'd be sad if finish the Android app before their lawyers get back to me with the legal stuff, though Android is a lot easier for me (I did iOS after completing majority of the features they wanted on Android because I was more comfortable working on it).
:/ What a drag
I messed up carelessly in production. Learnt how SQL queries bite you in the ass when it knows you are under pressure.
Was hosting an online quiz kinda thing during my college techfest. Tens of thousands of people participating.
Using MySQL as database and thousands of queries were being executed. Everyone were pretty excited as the event just opened up.
None of the teams could solve one particular level. Turns out the solution was wrong and was asked by the organisers to change the solution for that particular level. Usual stuff, right?
Was too lazy to open up the web UI for the back office and so, straight ahead logged in to the MySQL server and ran the UPDATE query on the table consisting of the solutions.
It had been a couple of hours and the organisers came to me with a weird problem. There were no changes in the scoreboard for the last two hours. Everyone were stuck wherever they were. Weird, right?
I then realized.
In that dreaded query, I had only run
UPDATE 'qa' SET answer = 'something'
leaving out the where clause, specifying the question to update, like
As a result, solutions to all the questions were updated to the same answer. After hastily fixing everything back, I had the dreaded conversation.
Org: What was the problem?
Me: It was the cache.
Org: Damn thing. Always messes up.
Me: *sheepishly* yeah
Probably the most embarrassing moment in my life, wrt coding 😑4
My hate for Windows update will never die.
It will live long until eternity and beyond.
I have spent my entire holiday updating to 'April 2018' update which is supposedly having some major changes.
Lots of bandwidth compromise and waste of time, now at the end of the day this motherfucking software is stuck at 6%.
Worst? It somehow deleted all my MS Office files and I can only open the documents in view mode.
God damn fuck!!!
I have work tomorrow and need to use the sleep but I am not sure how long this constipated dump is gonna take to finish itself shitting.
Now when I uninstalled and did a clean install of MS Office, more updates are downloaded because the installed version zillion years old.
All in the name of security and yet Windows is the most vulnerable operating system mankind has ever known.44
A quick update to a previous rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1336393/...
(If you haven’t read it yet, please do, because otherwise you won’t know what I’m talking about.)
So I got the laptop of my classmate working. I connected to my PC remotely because the laptop is way too slow. Everything was working perfectly and I was finally working on the app. But then it happened, I clicked on chrome and for some reason the laptop started to go crazy. The screen was all blocky/pixelated and I couldn’t do anything. I called someone from the ICT department at my school and he said he couldn’t fix it (probably because he didn’t know what to do or what was going on). So now the laptop is broken and I’m can start all over again. So I’m stuck, again. And my school doesn’t want to do anything about it. The worst thing is that my classmate needs to explain to his parents why his laptop broke. I hope I can get working again soon. I just don’t know what to do now.5
1) Remove kernel linux
2) Change kernel to linux-zen
3) Make init ramdisk
4) Everythings great -> hit reboot
5) Stuck at Grub
Me: Fuck.. Forgot to update grub config.
(Lesson : RTFM first.)2
"Will update my Android app I" thought.
"Haven't updated it in 2 years and summer vacations are here so now's the time", I thought.
Opened Android Studio. It notified me of an update for the IDE. "I'll update it, because (stable) IDE updates are always good", I thought.
Then it notified me of updates to the SDK and libraries. "I'll update those too, because (stable) SDK and library updates are always good", I thought.
Then it notified me to update to the latest recommended version of Gradle. "I'll update that too, because (stable) Gradle updates are always good as they almost always reduce build time", I thought.
"Now I can finally get to updating my app", I thought. But no!
Gradle then tells me that the compileSdkVersion needs to be the latest, so I change it to 26. Done? Not so fast!
It then tells me that targetSdkVersion should match the compileSdkVersion or else some compatibility modes would apply, and I didn't want that, so I change it too to 26. Then it tells me that I would also need to update the support libraries to v26. I do that too. And then when I sync the project files with Gradle, what does it tell me? THAT IT FAILED TO RESOLVE ANY OF THE UPDATED LIBRARIES! Not even the initial version (26.0.0), neither it's alpha nor it's beta. Now I'm stuck searching on StackOverflow and elsewhere about updating the libraries and all, when I just really want to update my app :/
Can't this whole IDE, SDK, Gradle and library update process be automated, and that too in the background, so that I can do exactly what I really want to do rather than waste so much of my time on this nonsense?! If it can't, then I want to work on making that happen first before anything else. Because seriously, "This sucks! Why did I even update any of this?", is what I now think.3
another big applaus for windows 10 update getting stuck and fucking up my whole GRUB!
I'm not even able to boot from live cd or select OS by UEFI anymore..
Update on my previous rant -
Mac restart after upgrade got stuck due to a fucking corrupted kext file, had to switch between recovery and safe/verbose mode to isolate that bastard, move him out of the folder and then do a clean restart.. Then, after 7 hours, it said 15 minutes remaining to complete installation...
Finally, it came up fine, doing healthy :)
Dear Mac, You, Sir, gave me a scare during a restart and are becoming like Windows (note: bsod) :(3
I hate Android Studio + Gradle. I've been stuck for 2 days, because it won't compile. Asked on SO and still nothing. The worst part is, I can't be sure what the cause is, because I've added a library and update AS before I did a compile.9
Ugh, tried to update to high Sierra, it has been like half an hour and still it's stuck here saying the same thing "44 minutes". What should I do guys?13
I know, this topic is as old as the human race, but still.
Yesterday Windows kept whining about updates. When I went to bed I allowed windows to finally do it's updates. Now I'm back from work and the machine isn't running anymore. I thought, OK, it won't annoy me this evening.
But I overlooked the one essential thing about windows updates.
IT WILL DO THE MAIN WORK WHEN IT BOOTS THE NEXT TIME!
When I explicitly tell you to do the updates, you will barely do anything but turning off! And the next time I'm trying to use you, you will do a shit ton of things and lock me out while doing so.
When it says that it'll update, shouldn't it install and reboot until it's done? Am I the one who's crazy?
Instead of "working" with the computer, I'm stuck with this shit.3
Apparently the windows 10 anniversary update did "something" to my laptop today.
Keyboard stopped taking input at a random moment a few hours after the update. I shut it down, and it's stuck while shutting down. Pressing the power button has no effect, and the battery is non replaceable (except with a screwdriver and unplugging a cable, which I don't want to do while there is still power running through the system)
Guess I'll just leave it unplugged and hope for the battery to die.
Thanks you Windows 10, thank you Dell P57F002.16
Today's been majorly tough 😣, I might lose one of my fav an most high paying clients 😐
He's OK in taking risks in his business because he has money to fall back on 😐 I have none we are sorta partners in projects. So we have this one project he never wrote in this project brief/outline maintenance or sign off ,😐 it never occured to him .
So now this app is ongoing I got paid nothing they just released it I need to do these jobs to make money 😐 but I'm stuck helping him 😐
There have been so many issues it's been ongoing forever 😐 I dunno what I can do .
To make it worse the code is a pile of shit 😐 literally couldnt be worse.
Why ? Because there has been 4000 minor adjustments. I'm a good coder I swear , but this job is killing me 🙁
Here's an example start of the new year the new iOS kicked in on the 12 Dec I started get more n more bug reports! Saying iOS is messed up.
Because of an update it's not my fault. 😣, 6 months this project took 😐 every 2 weeks I've had a major issue come up like that.
😖 I'm near my wit's end I feel like the best move is to just say I'm sorry I can't anymore I understand that this app is important and that we need to get paid less to grow it etc but I can't let my business die because of that.
Times like this I really appreciate this app
I guess I have to stick it out 😧1
About 2 years ago, our boss took a project that involved us bringing some old Web app back to life, plus making an RTL version of it
My senior and I took a deep look at what was going on there, which eventually made us feel like burning ourselves for spiritual cleansing.
Here's a gist of what we found -
- Some kind of a horrid mutant disguised as a custom made CMS
- HTML4 mixed with PHP and SQL queries in view templates (then again, everything was a view template)
- The entire app was encoded in Windows-1355 encoding
There was a shit ton more wrong with it, but these are the ones that stuck.
After looking at the source code of this real-life Frankenstein-ish display of retardation, we gave our estimation, told the client he'd be better off just letting us rebuild it or every small update would cost him a fortune.
The next day, he told us to get to work.
Let me tell you - it's really fucking annoying to try updating and uploading a file with a Windows-1355 encoding.
So today morning I got a driver related BSOD after which during restart, my pc went into windows update. Everything was going fine when power failed and it shut off. Now I am stuck with this...
Good thing I have linux in dual boot so work is getting done.
Stupid Windows Update back at it again with the Fall Creator's Update. More like Fail Creator's Update. My poor laptop took it too hard and the built-in mobile hotspot feature is currently bugged and not working, with the ICS service in task manager stuck at 100% you usage. Restore to previous version or not to restore to previous version? That my friends is the question. *picks up Ubuntu 17.10 live disk*2
Just wanted to work on some of the weekend ideas... I thought let's just install vs 2017... While installing I found out that I can't open any other vs... Not to worry, I thought, vs code may save the day...opened vs code... "Hey... There's new update... since it's normally very quick to update vs code lemme just install the update while vs 2017 is getting installed".. BAM!!! ... Vs Code update process got stuck for 20 mins..."Can I cancel the update? ".. BAM AGAIN!!! now vs code won't open.3
The value of a good walk...
So I was stuck with this problem. There's the data structure then there is the display of the data structure. Two copies of the data which is fine.
But the displayed copy is a pain to work with (WinForms) and there the was problem of having to handle events when the displayed data changed then update the back end actual working array and synchronize it so they're both up to date. Couldn't figure out a good solution. Actually slept on it. Still it didn't sit right to have two copies like that and sync it.
Went for a 20 min walk and BAM! Solution found. There was a way to just directly update the crappy WinForm and sort the data and keep the properties then when done displaying/selecting just convert to the working data format...so simple no synching required!1
I just fucked up real bad:
My phone was giving some error about not being able to install an update. Fair enough, i think to myself, so i try rebooting. Still nothing...
I then remember that i at some point OEM unlocked it for some testing, so i start up adb and see if i can connect during the update process. I can't. This is bad: I can't get into my home environment, nor can i connect with adb
Then i try booting into recovery, but instead of booting to ACTUAL recovery, it boots to some custom made "E-Recovery" made by huawei (my phone is a huawei p9 lite), which only gives me the option to download the update, which crashes, and no way of resetting. However, from here, i am finally able to connect to my internal storage via hisuite to make a backup
Next up: Bootloader
So i next load up the unlocked bootloader to try and manually flash the update. That works great, but it still wont boot normally. So i figure: it must think my device is in fact a different device. At this point i'm pretty fucked: Even though i have my data backed up, i can't manually download the update from huawei's site because i don't have the right keys, and i can't download an OTA because their site sucks and half of the downloads don't work, including the one i need. So now i'm stuck here with a bricked phone because EMUI doesn't know how to install an update.
I then did the stupidest thing i have done to date: i wanted to flash a custom recovery image over the "E-Recovery" in order to do some troubleshooting, but instead of writing
"fastboot (mydeviceid) flash recovery recovery.img"
"fastboot (mydeviceid) flash boot recovery.img"
Meaning i flashed my BOOT partition with a custom recovery image that turned out to not be able to run. Great! Now i've totally fucked my boot sequence
I can't call their support line either, because as soon as they realize i've tried to restore it myself, and therefor had my OEM unlocked, they basically just hang up.7
After yesterday update, my Windows 10 installation literally died, and I’m stuck on spinning cursor.5
today started as a great sunny day. but really my nightmare began a couple of nights ago. i installed gnome on linux by accident, all i wanted to do was create a desktop link to a webapp in my files. Since then, I have been offered updates by ubuntu. well today i couldnt pass up the offer. and after the update my broadcom driver stopped working. has anyone dealt with the bullshit that is broadcom on linux?! i wanted to reset the connection so i click to stop using the driver. window comes up says its out of date. now the driver has completely disappeared! wtf!!! now i need a dark wizard and to sacrifize my first born to get internet on my baby back.... fuuuuuuuu
plz help if you know..
stuck at work so wont be able to try till tonight. anxiety is real6
I've got a question about PHP arrays as I try to update my coding skills.
The problem I'm trying to solve is converting one vendor's CSV format to another vendor's format for a daily processing job.
I have a multi-row CSV file (number of rows changes daily but fields (15) do not). My PHP converts it to an array with fgetcsv so I can then copy its rows and data to a different blank target array with the same number of rows as the source array, but a different field order and number of fields (55) than the source array.
From here I will apply certain conditional business rules to copy data, field-by-field, from the source array fields to the target array fields, then output the target array to a CSV.
I'm stuck trying to figure out how to create (initialize) that target array so that it exists when I loop through the source array and copy values over to the target array.
Can anyone nudge me in the right direction on how to dynamically (loop?) create that multi-dimensional target array of n rows and 55 columns? I looked at http://w3schools.com/php/... for guidance but can't figure out how to structure the loop to make just one array of n rows and 55 columns, and not "n" arrays of n rows and 55 columns.4
Had to reboot to windows for a small task
The task was done in 3 minutes
Now i have to reboot back to continiue working because time is tight
I was angry and hoped it would be over as soon as possible
It is already updating for more than an hour and a half(it is not stuck)
and its only 32% done
*me crying in the corner*1
Friday, late due trains, on schedule for presenting last month's work.
Mac OS have decided to update some unknown time and doesn't give an estimate..
Why did I ever agree to try a Mac for workstation, just because it's the default platform at work..1
Not really dev related but here it goes:
Decided to update some apps on my phone during lecture. Suddenly android crashes and is stuck in a bootloop. Went to safe mode where "downloaded" apps are disabled but wanted to at least be available via telegram. So I followed a guide to manually convert an app to a system app and tested with some random app that I didn't care for. That worked flawlessly and then decided to proceed with telegram but it said that moving failed but actually the folder was moved. I took the chance and rebooted (again to safe mode) only to find out that now the system ui crashes as soon as it loads, also rendering the safe mode useless.
Great that such things always happen when you don't have access to a trusted machine with adb installed.
So my Windows installation is getting the creators update. Let's see if it even installs. Stuck on here for about half hour.4
I've been freelancing lately with an agency to develop an android app for their client and at the same time another person is developing the website .
The story begins when I first contacted the web dev to give me access to the database (because he started before me ).It turns out that this guy purchased an almost ready cms template with a shitty data structure that has no relations between object .This database has no primary keys , no foreign keys , no indexes ... no nothing . Adding to that the web dev refused that I rewrite a new data structure claiming that he has done a good progress on the website .
Forward couple of weeks , I managed to create the api and develop an alpha for the app and sent it to the agency manager .
This bastard told me that the website and design have changed and the app shouldn't be like that .He told me to contact the other bastard the web dev to seen what the changes are . I'm waiting for the response about the new updates and I'm praying that they'll be just minor colors updates or something not a whole concept update .
My problem here is I'm stuck with this fucking agency cuz they paid half of the payment when I started .
Damn I must learn to say no to people .2
Don't get me started at Win Updates. I know it is old school but I recently installed win 7 and I realized that updates work in a terribly f***ed up way.
Stuck at "checking for updates". OMG 😤 After quite some research I managed to get passed this step by manually downloading and installing an update that fixed the issue.
Why oh why? 😰2
