Fuck You blue car driver who is texting and just cut in front of me! I accidentally double tapped the wrong rant!4
Shout out to devs who put comments in your code I'm so done with my team rn
Also we have slack for a reason stop texting me to update everyone on changes...2
Her: Who are you texting over there?
Me: Texting my new girlfriend.
Me: Jk, it's devrant.
Her: I knew it, you're texting that girl Devranta.2
This happens way too FUCKING often:
Random person: Hey, can I have your number so I can text you?
Me: Yeah sure! *gives number*
*A few days later*
Person: Hey you gave me your number to message you but I can't find you on whatsapp???
Me: no indeed....?
Person: Well, then why did you give me your number?!?
Me: you asked if you could TEXT me, I don't have whatsapp.....?
Person: Ohh but I meant whatsapping.... that's like the same
THAT'S NOT THE MOTHERFUCKING SAME!!! TEXTING != WHATSAPPING YOU FUCKING COCKSUCKING MOTHERFUCKING ANNOYING PIECE OF GRRRRRRRRR5
Interested? Really? Then how come you called me?
My resumes clearly says my number is for texting only. It also has my LinkedIn address next to it. And the summary on it clearly says that I am deaf and you should email me!14
So, as some people here probably know, I don't use any of the mainstream, mass surveillance integrated social media and messaging services. Since I'm located in the Netherlands especially whatsapp is nearly a life requirement but Facebook and such come close as well and I don't use anything related to Facebook, Google, Apple and any of the other companies related to mass surveillance programs which often puts me in awkward positions.
Every time someone wants to stay in touch and the fact that I don't use whatsapp comes up again, it usually turns into an explaining session with much disbelief from the other party but more and more often, I'm getting rather tired of that.
Recently, I had one of those moments and instead of saying 'sorry, I don't use whatsapp', i went for 'sorry, I'm old school, i only do texting and calling!'.
No discussion, just got a "ah, fair enough!"
I started doing this more and more and I get the same response every time!
I find it quite astonishing how bringing something another way can get one a completely different response, especially in this context.35
My first internship was unpaid. "For the experience" and shit. My first task was to clear out an entire office full to the literal ceiling with the phones of people who had been laid off or quit. There were now just three old guys in the entire office. And me. Go figure. I need to find that picture, it's truly unbelievable.
My next task was to sort cables in the store room. Mind you, this was supposed to be a software dev internship.
I consistently had to ASK for work to do. If I didn't, I would just sit in my new office all day doing homework and playing with linux liveCDs and nobody cared.
So the third task they gave me was to try to restore a very old (like XP old) computer that had a broken hard drive, literally broken. Said they wanted to "repurpose it." As busy work I guess.
So I scrounged around the cleptomaniacal cesspool of dated and neglected tech and found a hard drive. Pop it in, chkdsk, fdisk, good to go. Spend hours installing XP while sorting more random cables and doing my homework because honestly writing a history paper is more valuable to my dev career than this complete bullshit. Finally get the thing working and go to report the miracle of rebirth to my higher-up. He says "oh cool," doesn't smile, and hands me a list of software to install.
I come back 20 minutes later - "Hey, most of these require corporate licenses."
Guy says "yup" and goes back to ignoring me. Never gives me a company card to buy licenses, or a list of ones already bought. I've revived the computer equivalent of Moses from the computer equivalent of permadeath just for this asshole to completely disregard that and give me an(other) impossible task, just to get me off his back. Excuse me for imposing with free (then-child) labor, you ass.
I spend maybe another week there doing homework in the office I cleaned and contemplating stealing everything of value. I guarantee they wouldn't have noticed though, which somehow made the idea less appealing.
I quit by texting my boss.
He never replied.
I wish I had stolen their laptop RAM.
It's probably still sitting on boss's shelf collecting dust and being a miserable, outdated fucking waste of space, just like him and his two remaining coworkers.4
Focus on algorithms first and syntax last. Solve problems, then code.
If it uses power, has an I/O interface, and stores code, you can do stuff.
Dont get caught up in the little shit like specific code formatting and who's right or wrong between tabs or spaces. (It should be TABS anyway.)
Don't take shit from anyone.
Be confident not cocky.
Learn GIT as much as you can.
Don't burn out.
Get up and stretch.
Don't argue with your Operating Systems professor about why you shouldn't have to learn Linux.
Don't fall into the "I want to be a game developer" trap. Make your own games on your own time. You won't learn shit at school about it.
9/10 of the real world workforce is who you know, so don't be a dick. Those people might be the difference between Ramen noodles and steak dinner for you.
Charge market competitive rates and set an hourly rate that defines the clientele you deal with.
Don't ever, EVER, do trade or spec work. Free work don't pay the bills. Always start the clock when you're not sleeping, eating, or shitting. If you're emailing, calling, texting, or otherwise interacting with or on behalf of a client, bill them. Don't be a bitch when they decide they don't want to pay you. Get yours. Watch "Fuck You. Pay Me." at least once a month on YouTube.10
I broke off a long term relationship recently and today I deleted the text conversation with my ex. With 13000 messages being deleted at once I managed to crash my texting app for a whole 10 minutes.5
A quick non-dev rant..
So. A few of you may have noticed this in my devrant "about" section.
But for those who don't know, I have this disorder called "CAPD" or Central Auditory Processing Disorder. Well actually, I have something called "SPD" or Sensory Processing Disorder but the capd is the worst part.
Basically what it does is, I have a very hard time properly reacting and comprehending various sensory inputs including hearing.
Anyways.. enough about what it is. Let's get to the ranting!
I am so fucking done with capd! It is so annoying. I will be working on a project by myself or something and someone will start talking to me. But I can't fucking understand them!
My right ear has the most problems so if my left ear happens to be blocked, like wearing headphones, it's like everyone is speaking a different language. I can't figure out anything that people say.
This gets really fucking frustrating because I don't usually tell people about this. (Because going up to someone and saying "hi my name is ____ and I have this Disorder" is really weird). So since I at a new school where only like two people know this, I get yelled at for not paying attention and other random reasons. Nobody actually wants to hear my explanation. Also I usually resort to texting people (even when they are sitting beside me) because then I can actually understand the conversation on the first try.
Yes.. this makes my social life very awkward.
Anyways.. I am mostly annoyed right now because it has been getting really bad recently.
Help me plz..
Seriously.. any suggestions on ways to make my life easier?
If you are wondering what having capd is like, I'm going to put a link to a great YouTube video about it in the comments.31
I love it when unethical companies' marketing chaps assume that I care about their SMS garbage more than I get pissed off by it. Damart, I didn't even know about your existence or what the hell you do as a business (selling woman clothes apparently.. am I a woman?!) until you shoved your ad crap into my face, and Unigro I really don't have a pending contract with you so kindly fuck off with your reminders (that are in French but am I a Walloon? No!).
Makes me wonder though, with email I usually just give everyone a different email address to deflect spam - since I can reroute email to any particular address straight to /dev/null on the server if so desired. With SMS and SIM cards that isn't really possible.. hence why I'm always so hesitant about sharing my phone number. In email the addresses are scraped off the internet.. but phone numbers? How do such shitcompanies even obtain those?! Their level of pushiness and unethical behavior boggles my mind.8
I feel as if my friends from school are dropping me one by one and it's boiling down to my IT friends. I really like my friends and stuff but they're treating me like I'm invisible so I'm not posting this on instagram, not on twitter, and I'm not texting this to anyone, because I'm really starting to realize how big of an impact the life of IT studies has on me, and how amazing the community is. Thank each and every one of you for simply being here on devRant and I appreciate all of you.12
When was last time you had Fight or Argument(restricted only to texting) with your GF/BF/Spouse while coding?
The amount of text typed on phone is more than the code on screen.8
Yes, the chat application.
Fuck it, fuck mattermost, HipChat, Skype, and whatever other digital text medium for team communication.
These are great applications, but used for great evil. They feed cliques and passive aggressive "side" conversations. Every team I've been on has something like this, and it allows people to cultivate hate for one another even though they're sitting in the same room.
Texting allows you to complain about a coworker to your clique. Each clique can have it's own thread. This empowers people to silently rip into other team members. It prevents rational adult conversations and builds stupid little secret societies.7
*My friend texting me*
My brain: w tf
My brain again: tf
My brain again: import tensorflow as tf
😂😂am brain dead3
I see many developers ranting about recruiters messaging, texting or even calling them. While in my case, the recruiter doesn't even accept my invitation on LinkedIn!2
You aren't qualified to be lead dev he says while calling, emailing, and texting daily to ask me how to do high level developer type stuff. Seriously.
My friend has a smart watch, and he is always watching the time. Texting. I meant to say texting. He's always texting at work. I have a traditional watch, so I like to make fun of him by very loudly saying "Hey Siri" into my watch a few times and acting confused when it doesn't work.2
One of my weirder(?) quirks now is to use '//' for things that aren't even programming related. Just to make random comments here and there. So, my little sister just learned some basic coding. She told me that now she finally understands why I kept adding random '// ' while texting her.
[context: sitting in a chair, posting a comment here in devRant]
Other Person (jokingly): "That doesn't look like volunteer work, that looks like texting!"
Me (awkwardly): "Haha, yeah..."
Me (internally): If only I had people to text...3
I have an Android phone. Pixel 2 to be exact, and I love it. Many family members and friends of mine have iPhones. To each their own.
Having said that, I absolutely HAAAATE the stupid iPhone feature that lets users react to text messages. Today all those iPhone users added me to literally 5 different SMS groups (which by themselves are their own sin), chatting up a storm all evening. I already hate group texts, please, leave me alone. But it gets so much worse when my phone blows up with twice as many messages because so-and-so "liked" this message, and so-and-so "laughed" at that message. It sends you their chosen verb alongside the ENTIRE original text AGAIN.
Such a stupid feature, leave Facebook on Facebook, why the hell do text messages need reactions? I don't give a shit that you liked or laughed or loved that so and so said they will be there at 9 o clock.
At least i have the ability to mute notifications for each group otherwise I'd be replying to every group text I get with a trolling big trigger item or something super inappropriate until they stop. Don't want this to continue? Stop group texting me, stop reacting to texts, and don't do it again.12
So, I am currently seeking opportunities at other companies. I randomly got a call on Thursday around 12pm from an unknown number and I was not able to take that call as I was in a meeting. Later on, after looking up that number on Truecaller, I found out that it’s a recruiter from a US-based firm that I had applied to earlier. I immediately tried to call that person again but she was not able to talk as she was in another meeting. I tried texting the recruiter asking for her availability but she didn’t respond. I called again and this time she got annoyed at me, saying that she will call me back if needed. Now, on the weekend I again tried to message her, asking when she is free for a conversation, she is acting high and mighty, saying that she will call me when we (the company) have interviews again (hinting that I have missed the opportunity and it’s my fault). Her passive-aggressive attitude seems to be coming because I didn’t take her earlier call— I did not deliberately avoid her call, I was in another meeting. I was not given any intimation that she is going to call me— let alone on a weekday at 12pm. My current company expects a high-level of professionalism and I intend to show the same level of professionalism in any future companies that I work with. This kind of dehumanization (mainly due to a power imbalance in top-down heirarchical structure) is why big companies have hard time retaining workers these days. And this company was not Google/Apple or anything remotely in the same league. So I seemed to have dodged a bullet there.5
I'm thinking of buying a Samsung Galaxy S7 as a replacement to my Nexus 6P.. from what I can tell, it ticks all the boxes.. nice battery (3000mAh), 5GHz Wi-Fi, octacore CPU, kernel source being available, QHD display... However, it being sold at €350 - and that only in the Netherlands - does introduce quite some hurdles. For anyone who's owned this device, how long did you own this device and did any issues show up, especially hardware-related ones? Last time I owned a Samsung device was with a Galaxy S3 Mini, which was a delight to use. Other than that I don't really have any experience with it.
Another thing that piqued my curiosity - I still have 3 Raspberry Pi's unused, as well as one LCD display (but without touch). It got me thinking, the only things that I really use my phones for on the go is for calling, texting and listening to music via Bluetooth. Perhaps a Raspberry Pi or even an Arduino could take care of that? The smart devices that I'd consume and produce most content on are my tablet and my PC anyway.44
How to fucking tell my fucking new employee to start working instead of texting? Dude cant survive 15min without pulling out his phone and texting. I told him to at least timebox his work, like focus on work 1 hour and then text for 5 minutes.
By 5min texting and 5min working he wont learn shit. Im not paying him for sitting and texting.
Problem is, he's a friend of a friend so for some reason he feels quite chill here since he didnt have to bust his ass to get here. Also its his first work.14
i havent been on dr in a while, but here goes nothing. i started going out about 3 months ago with a girl who i've been texting a while.
she's everything i've ever wanted and i think about her all the time. this may also be a good time to mention i'm fifteen. well, i'd hang out with her all the time. it's the most fun i ever have. i tell my parents i'd be seeing my friends but i'd be with her or walk to her house. time with her was the best.
and, more recently, i've been engaging in some not-so-appropriate physicality with her.
a few days ago i asked my parents to drive me to my friend's house when i saw the look on their face. they found a used condom with a pregnancy test and some lube too, and they made me spill everything.
it's been a week since i last saw her. she decided to tell her mom what we did on the off chance my parents decided to tell her mom we had sex.
this fucking sucks. i'm grounded and can't do anything. does anyone have any suggestions on what i could do? i think i'll wait out my grounding then just see her whenever i can.11
When your co-worker uses needless terminology. It’s your day off and you’re texting from bed.
cw: Do you have access to the email client?
me: You mean the work email? Yes.
cw: Did you set up access to the database or an FTP protocol for userX?
me: You mean an admin account? Yes.
cw: Were we planning on adding more calls to action on projectX?
me: You mean site links? Yes.2
There was a team meeting where something controversial was being discussed. A team mate was sharing their screen showing the controversial prototype. Meanwhile, me and another team mate started texting parallely on Teams. After a while, people were just listening to each other arguing and doing their own thing. And the guy who was arguing at that moment was being very sarcastic and passive aggressive and it was hilarious. I texted my teammate some inside joke about the the team mate. I heard the Teams notification go off and it was not mine. Oh yeah, I texted the teammate whose screen was being shared 🙇1
Long long time ago when recharge coupons we a thing, I used to try out more codes in the series and waste my time. After failing a lot over this, I started trying out different USSD codes to see what other stuff is out there. This got me to stumble upon facebook and twitter on USSD. I'm not sure now but, twitter was probably *515# from my carrier.
Facebook. I remember chatting for quite a long period using this. Very slow and limited yet, fun. The USSD message expires within ~60secs. so you have to type the chat message before that or you lose everything you typed. The phone was no smartphone that would allow me to copy the text from the USSD input. On top of that panic, was a character limit to these messages. I remember hitting send while being midway through a message just so I don't lose what I typed, on a T-9 keyboard. Still miss those!
The person on the other side would receive a half message due to this, and would start replying without any patience, to which I panicked as now there's a new thing to respond to, and a half message which I'm waiting to complete.
Later over the weekend when I was allowed to visit the cyber cafe for an hour or two with 15-30 INR, reading the chat threads, being able to use the five sticker packs:) and thus continuing on a computer was fun. But, as the time at the cafe expires, I had to immediately shut off my session or I'd be charged more. Thus, I was left in the middle of a conversation again, and had to continue over USSD.
Using social media without any internet like this was quite fun in a weird way. If I get a new message, I'd get a USSD alert, and then an sms if I didn't reply in some 10-15mins!
This had all the features like like and comment. Friend requests too. For the posts in a "timeline" which was new and fancy in those days, all you see is the caption of a post which also gets truncated quite a bit as USSD also has to show it's options like:
3. Next Post
4. Main Menu
This was around '13 or '14 I guess. After which I later got my first computer- a laptop. Anyways, the tactile feel of pressing the buttons on a T-9 keypad is nostalgic to me. 😅 And if you were a pro at texting, u must hv used shrtcts lyk dis too w/ emojis lyk :-) <3
Just now I was texting with my little sister, telling her how I'm doing, about that Foobar email etc... My sister replies: "Um.. foobar? Isn't that that place where you get your broken devices repaired?"
… It took me much longer than I'd like to admit to realize what bar she was referring to... Genius! XD6
So I'm coming out of one that has a focus on this stack (JS [JQuery after weeks of Vanilla JS drilling in our heads, React], Java, MySQL, Python [Django, Bottle], HTML/CSS, and a few web security concepts (XSS, SQL injections).
The whole course has been 4 months learning, 3 weeks working on a final project. Next week is the presentation, so I think I can safely comment on the course.
We moved fast, but that's to be expected. Lecture in the mornings, exercises in the afternoons, assignments due at the beginning of each week. Constantly working towards it and improving. I have been working pretty hard. We were given some help, but had to get a lot of answers online (based God StackOverflow), but that's part of it.
We touched on some concepts like inheritance in JS, Python and Java, OOP and to be open to concepts we don't know so we should be thirsty for that knowledge.
In my off time, I've begun texting myself Node and really trying to double down on React because it seems useful. I realized I was more drawn to the backend, but I was comfortable in front end as well. (Just don't ask me to design anything, my eye for aesthetics/CSS sorcery is terrible.)
The overall experience has been pretty mixed, but we were mostly unsatisfied. We weren't given then help we were promised. The explanations weren't exactly crystal clear, so we would have to teach ourselves and each other quite a bit. We worked together a lot. Some people really fell behind, some caught up, some flew ahead and thrived. (I'm somewhere between caught up and thrived, I recognize where I stand.)
I'm happy I did a bootcamp, they aren't miracle programs, but they at least kick you into place that you are learning and need to continue to learn. (Just kinda wish I had done a different one.)
Feel free to ask about anything concerning it!
Few weeks back, late night, busy watching online series and suddenly, junior pings me and asks for doubts related to implementation design and then implementation in nodejs (which I touched long long ago). And, me being attracted towards debugging, and kind heart to help the junior(hihi kind heart), helped to completely resolve the issue by texting and screenshot of logs sent over message.. just to mention. Time was around 2-3 am.. my most effective time period..
Today we reached 30 "dev-ghosting" episodes since the beginning of the year.
What is "dev-ghosting"?
It's every time a developer decides to completely disappear from a recruitment procedure instead of just texting "Hey, I am no longer interested in your offer".
You can call them as many times as you want, even if they were supposed to be at your office 2 hours ago for negotiating the salary after dozens of "I'd love to join your company as soon as possible": they are gone.
So my boss yells at me for texting right after she finished her text. Not sure if I wanna throw back the sass at her.4
Building on this other rant: https://devrant.com/rants/2168393/...
What other pet peeves you have when chatting or texting? What things grind your gears?
People.........that type..........long messages................with lots of dots in between.........like they are allergic to the spacebar......
people that don't write any punctuation because they write like they speak and when you speak you don't speak the punctuation right and you also don't speak the question marks right do you agree
People that send a message to you, then after a whole minute has passed…
R u there?
Call me when you read this ok?
Well, this week was a week from hell. It was a short 3 day week, and all of my internal Customers, who are normally pretty reasonable, just all unloaded on me at the same time. "We need this now!" "Have you done this?" "Why didn't you do that?" "We need you to do this, because our migration takes place in 30 minutes." (first notice of the migration). And then to top everything off, I'm creating a rollback DDL, and I've spent a couple of hours pulling my hair out, because a set of columns that need rolled back aren't in Prod, so I can't roll them back, because my own DDL drops them, and broadcast my natural meltdown to the entire DevOps team, feeling like an utter jackass after I realize my mistake. And even at quitting time, they are still walking up, and texting, and emailing. Holy f**k, I'm only going to be gone four days, two of them weekend, and will be back. All of this while trying to sell my house and pack boxes and move to an apartment. Can I retire now? Looks at retirement account... Nope, I'll be working until I'm 95. Just shoot me already!1
My left cortex: You have a paper to write @poster983. Put devrant down.
My right cortex: NO! Enjoy yourself. You have a study hall tomorrow. Do it then.
My left cortex: Remember, you already said that about history. Best to do it now!
*mouth makes farting noise*
My Right cortex: COME ON! IT'S HUCKLEBERRY FINN. JUST USE SPARK NOTES! DO IT L A T E R!
My left cortex: fuck you right.
My right cortex: right back at you.
My full brain: OK HALT THE DEVRANTS! THE BOYFRIEND IS TEXTING!
(Notice the recursion here?). This is why I can't ever write papers.
Same thing applies to when I'm programing. I end up spending 2 hours on something that only should have taken me 1.
My left cortex: Stop Ranting!
>> please help me understand this because im going insane <<
I texted a girl to review my app on google play store
She was like yeah sure
She played the game and said it was cool, told me feedback etc
We chatted about it for a bit
I asked her if she could rate it 5 stars and leave a review and thats it....
She said sure what do u want me to write hahaha
I said anything just something positive
She said oh god fine wait
8 minutes of awkward silence.
8 minutes later i asked her if shes done
5 minutes later she said "Ys hahah"
1 minute later i receive this attached notification that someone had actually left a review.
Within 30 seconds i open it and google play tells me this review has been deleted.
I ask her could you send me a screenshot of your review.
Hours passed by, no answer.
I asked her what happened now, why did you delete your review?
Hours and hours passed by... She doesn't want to enter my message but she is actively texting other people..... I know this because on Snapchat there are points below your name, each time you send or receive 1 message you get +1 point. Last time she sent me that "Ys hahah" was at 42576 points, and now shes at 42594.
I am extremely pissed off about people like this. I actually want to stress about this but i no longer have even energy. Can someone please help me understand why...22
For context: I’m a relatively new employee (~six months) on the outreach team at a large nonprofit. Our team rarely gets together, working remotely and out at events most of the time. My supervisor’s managing style is odd to me, and I’m not really used to it yet. She is very hands-off and flaky, but extremely numbers-oriented and goal-driven. She doesn’t respond well to emails and often ends up communicating solely via text.
Last week, a friend of mine passed away unexpectedly. My manager was out of town and not working that day, so I emailed instead of texting her to let her know that I would be travelling for the funeral and wouldn’t be working on Monday or Tuesday. She actually emailed back apologizing for my loss and telling me to just let her know when I’m back in town. I was impressed that she got back to me and thankful for her flexibility.
On Sunday night at 11:30 p.m., I received a text from her about a Monday morning meeting that I chose to ignore because I was annoyed that she would text me so late and expect a response, even if it would just be to remind her that I’m out. At around midnight she sent another that said, “That’s right, you’re out. I forgot.”
On Tuesday morning, while pulling into the church parking lot for the funeral, I received a text from her to our whole team complaining about outreach and program recruitment numbers with several follow-up texts asking for immediate explanations for not meeting this month’s goals. I immediately silenced notifications from the conversation and haven’t addressed them.
Am I wrong in thinking that this was extremely inappropriate and insensitive? I feel like that conversation would have been much better suited for an in-person meeting, or even an email, especially since she knew I was out on personal time. At the very least, she should have left me off of the text chain, right?
Should I talk to her about this when I see her next? Go to HR? Bring it up the next time I take a personal day (“I’d like it if you don’t text me while I’m out this week”)? I’m really terrible at confrontation and am nervous about looking like I’m overreacting, but this really upset me. Thankful for any advice you can give!5
People who think that emailing, texting, voicemailing, whatsapping and skyping are acceptable alternatives to raising a ticket/defect/issue
I just noticed that it seems reading devRant has made me more prone to cursing (when I'm texting)... Is that a good thing or a thing?4
Worst meeting I've ever been in.
Everyone texting, then complaining about the number of meetings. If this is terrible let's make it useful and have one good meeting!
Can we PLEASE once and for all redesign email and texting to be whitelist only?
Seriously, blacklisting doesn't work. We still have assholes that just because they know a line of text or a phone number can harass you forever. It IS harassment and needs to stop. We can always have the option of throw away blacklist addresses, but lets make primary email and phone numbers whitelist only as a standard feature. The business of SPAM would be dead overnight.7
Was trying to pull an all nighter to meet a deadline and I accidentally fell asleep. I was also texting a new person I liked at the same time.
Dreamt I got so much work done and was still texting and got into an argument.
Woke up, but by the time I realized what happened and that I slept off I had already randomly texted something aggressive and insulted 😭
So yeah. Guess who got no work done and is probably gonna be single for life 😂
We haven't been able to come up with a solution for a simple problem while emailing and texting over the last 30 minutes, after hours, but let me waste more of your time talking to you on the phone about what we've been emailing and texting.
I like how I'm the only programmer or tech-kid in my school, since everybody else is using there phones for SnapChat and texting in the middle of class.
While I'm over here talking about the insides of software and hardware like if I were the person that made them.
Seriously, I wish I could show my classmates that spending all of their time on apps and websites that sell your personal data is less fun (and basically stupid) than actually making what you want with nothing but a text editor and computer.
But oh well, 90% of my classmates are either assholes, cringy white girls (or Mexican girls), and the only people I find tolerable or even likable, are the people that don't talk much.
I am wondering what secure app do you guys use for texting/voice/video.
I know Signal but I am looking for something that uses a username like devrant instead of a phone number.6
Related to queueing theory...
Suburban traffic at a stop lights has developed a tendency to include invisible cars.
You can see where these invisible cars are by the gap between the front bumper of one car the back bumper of the next. Sometimes there is an invisible motorcycle, sometimes there is an invisible semi-tractor trailer. It is becoming an epidemic.
The dumbasses in traffic who do this are usually texting behind the wheel while stopped and they are not always Buffy the ding dong cheerleader nor Sally the Soccer Mom... Suits too... It seems to have gotten worse with pot becoming legal I just realized...
But to the point, you can tell these people would never be able to comprehend software engineering... they have no idea that for every invisible car in front of every dumbass driver like them, there is a real car way back that has to sit through two lights. (side effects of bugs and inefficient hash tables) Worse, these dumbasses do this in the left lane so it keeps a host of others from being able to get past their big fat ass into the turn lane.
Simple queueing theory escapes these people.
Computers will someday take their jobs.
Sometimes it motivates me to code faster... "There goes your job beotch! Get used to mac and cheese..."
But once in a while I am in a position to be able to be stopped at a light, and note that next to me is one of those "gapsters" and then pull my car (or motorcycle some days) into that invisible car's spot. The gapster gets so mad sometimes... >:-> so much satisfaction I almost feel guilty...
Queueing theory rules... LOL
Calm down, all of you! I know that a lot of you hate Facebook, whatsapp, Snapchat and Co. And yes, WhatsApp's new status feature complete bullshit and just shows how anti competitive Facebook can be. But who cares? Don't use the feature if you do not like it. Texting didn't change in any way. Ignore the feature. There is probably other software out there that added stuff and you disliked. Did it make you stop using them? Probably not. You just ignored those. Deal with it :D and stop fucking ranting about it. Reading the same shit all over again after waking up. Frustrating as hell!3
Is it worse when someone leaves you on seen or straight out ignores your messages and doesn't want to even open them while actively texting other people?
What should i do about the second case?3
How I got my first Free Swag?
I stole it?
So it dates back to year 2016. After learning about open source project and working with few organisations, I noticed few contributors and developers with t shirts having logo of the company or organisation.
I mean if you see a guy wearing google tagged t shirt don't think he works in Google, he might have purchased it.
Next, I started searching for ways to obtain one. I reached and texted developers and all they told me were two golden rules.
1. If you develop something or update something, showcast it.
2. Always show the organisation what you do for them, even if it small contribution.
After this I started mailing and texting the contact mail id of companies and organisation I worked and contributed. Some texted me- no we don't have free items, some said we can't ship to India.
But out of 100 replies with 85 negatives, I recieved 15 positive replies. I was amazed to know that I'll recieve one.
You know what I was showered with
And many more.....
This Rant is for you to motivate and showcast what you do.2
Looking for SO snippets and forgetting about it after using it feels like initiating conversations with people when you are bored and not texting them for ages after that.
Just got off work, pulled up to the stoplight right outside the office, and some kid texting on his phone rear ended me. That was about an hour ago. So that's how my week ended. How's yours going?2
Can you tell I'm a programmer? (I don't code much (just occasionally in C# (never in Perl (JS (es2017 that is) is my favourite) because it's icky) my second favourite language)), I don't think it's obvious.
So I, after 3 days finally perfected a 'texting' code for 2+ computers on a network in shellscript... I was so happy I had a spasm and kicked my laptop off my bed and broke it, I had to start over!
This year we went to ChaosStack with my friends. It was fine, nothing special, we sucked, but we had fun.
However, last year I applied with a different team. We had a hard time deciding the technologies to do the selection task with, as we couldn't find a language that all three of us would know. We finally agreed on C++, which wasn't exactly the best tool for the job (calling rest apis) but at least we all knew it a little. We divided the work, agreed on texting one another if we can't solve something, and I thought we were done.
Fast forward 3 days before the deadline, I text them when we could meet to connect the things.
Next morning I learned that they left to a maths camp (that's been held on those exact days for the past 10 years) and wouldn't come back until after the competition.
Well I'm back on this stupid project with this stupid Product Owner and I really hate this, it really demotivates me.
I was assigned to this project (data analytics) for like 6 months, working alone with this stupid PO that knows nothing about team management or project management.
The guy had a "methodology" where he established all task to be done daily and would not tell me what we have to do in the entire project but instead would tell me day by day all the tasks to be done in each day. This means that HE was the one making the time estimation which is plain wrong!.
Anyways, I talked to him and told him that I need to have a wide overview of the project in order to be able to make a good time estimation, and it kind of worked.
But the guy is a pain in the ass, calls me every 4 hours to "talk" about the project and texts me every hour to check "how are we doing?".
This project was killing me, I had no motivation to work on it, I hated every minute of it, I didn't like it at all to the point my boss (not him) talked to me and asked me what was wrong with me. I told him: This is not the project for me. He told me: Ok let's try to move you to another project.
After six months of agony, the project was stale (customer approval, paperwork, blah, blah) I was assigned to two other projects that I liked, more software architecture and development, not data analytics.
And last week my boss came back to me with "well, the project was approved so we need you back at it".
WHAT PART OF I'M NOT THE RIGHT GUY FOR THIS PROJECT DIDN'T YOU GET?
Now I'm again with this dude, calling me, texting me, sending me infinite emails, asking for minutely updates...
I really don't want to be working on this project.
So, firstly allow me to start with I'm not one to use my phone, so the idea that I'm not allowed to doesn't actually bother me, but the threatening tone really does drive me insane. The corporate office environment here is quickly getting old. Am I wrong to be annoyed by this?

Remember these emails?
PUT YOUR PHONES AWAY. Next one I see I will confiscate until the end of the day.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

I see mobiles starting to creep out onto desks and people with heads down texting/looking at their phones.
What I said previously still stands.
Put them away, or I will.

tl;dr: looking for suggestions for new instant messenger (WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.)
so I used to use Facebook Messenger a LOT, actually much more than even texting (I know I know, Facebook=spyware lol). I wanna ditch Facebook so bad but most of the people I talk to, I message through Messenger, and thus, I don't have most people's actual phone number. so I'm looking for suggestions for a new messaging platform, where these are my priorities:
1. Ease of use/existing userbase (e.g. the more of my friends that are already on it, the better)
2. Security & Privacy
3. the ability to easily find people I know without having their phone number9
anyways my ex told me if i want to try our relationship out again for the second time, i can always text him. but after he said that he blocked me on everything. i was thinking about texting him because i do miss him. he didn’t block me on instagram though.5
Does anybody know about to text from an iPhone on a Windows 10 PC? I doubt I'll ever get a Mac... and would like to write a texting client if there is not already one available. Apple's bullshit lack of compatibility and accessibility to developers off of their platform probably means cutting corners, but I figured if there was a way this community is the fastest way to find out..3
