Dev: why should I develop windows phone apps. Almost nobody uses this kind of shit.
Customer: Why should I use a fucking windows phone. The windows app store is as empty as a ghost town.31 -
devRant has had a huge impact on my life. My poops are significantly longer and now my legs fall asleep because of it.19

My PC when I use it: "..."
My PC when I look at something on my phone: *gentle fan hum*
My PC when I resume activity : "..."
My PC, 5 minutes after leaving it: **VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV**
** sits down, still big fan blowing, open up the task manager to see what's bugging the system **
** PC calms down **
I have an overly attached PC?14 -
I really appreciate devs that aren't complete assholes when you admit ignorance and embrace failure. Be a teacher, not an asshole!9
-
Oddly enough, it's comforting to hear other devs mumble "mother fucker" or "what the fuck, you stupid piece of ass" when working on things.
It means I'm not alone and we can all suffer together 🤗3 -
When you show the senior developer your clever solution to a problem and they come back with "you can also do XYZ" and his solution is much more elegant. Appreciate your superiors kids.4
-
If you get the "What's your greatest weakness" question make sure to answer "honesty". That way when they say "I don't think honesty is a weakness", you say, "I don't care what you think."1

My boss when:
Conversation regarding passwords:
Me: "It should be longer than that"
Other dev: "That's what she said"
*taking note of the inappropriate-ness*
Me: "We need to get a room for us"
PM: "That's what she said"
Me: "Come on Ryan!"
Other dev: "That's what she said"
Sales Lady: "This will never end!"
Me: "That's what she said!"
Office dies for a minute. Michael Scott would be proud.2 -
A very experienced PM/WebDev came to us. His resume was fantastic but a bit strange. He wrote he had been working for 15 years but his experience in C# was 18 years. Though I was sceptical about this guy, others expected him to be a .NET guru. So, the interview began. The candidate described his brilliant career, then he said he wanted to move forward as a programmer and work with the newest technologies. It wasn't easy to ask him basic questions but they were in the list, so we needed to start with questions for juniors. I asked him to tell us about value types and reference types, and the answer was: about what? I repeated the question, and he said he didn't know about such complex things. I knew his resume was strange but I was disappointed. It turned out that our candidate didn't know C# at all.6

We had a server that crashed every single Christmas four years a row. Last year I put a cross and garlic on it for fun. Everybody laughed at me... but it didn't crash!
Soo... should I protect it from the Christmas ghost again, this year too? 🤔👻1 -
Many years ago at school the machines were imaged using Norton Ghost. A floppy disk containing Norton Ghost and it's configuration would be put into the machine, which would automatically start the imaging process.
When these floppy disks inevitably started erroring they'd be tossed into the rubbish bin. I grabbed one of these broken disks, inserted it a few times until my machine would recognise it, and hey presto, the config file along with the domain admin password were now visible.1 -
I can't believe how quickly this community has grown! Absolutely amazing to see so many like-minded people I can relate to 😊. Before devRant I had (I shit you not) 1 fellow dev that I could talk to.. Now I have a ton 😄5

My grandmother asked me to help her find an article about a recipe for a chocolate cake. The recipe she wanted was the first result on Google, so I sent her a LMGTFY link (let me Google that for you, a website that writes by itself the word or the sentence). Later on the same day, she said that her laptop was possessed by a ghost.3

So my office is located in the oldest part of the hospital I work at. Weird shit happens here, especially at night. Currently working on configuring our security cameras, stand by for triply shit.12

I feel guilty for being such a murderer.
I killed Cortana so many times over, but her ghost keeps coming back to haunt me.1 -
One developer to me:
I will need access to root account on that new machine you just installed so that I can install/configure all the stuff and so you won't have to do it.
Me - I can't give you root. Not even sudo, this will be a production machine, I need to have a clean track of it.
D - but I will give it (root) back to you once I'm done.
Me - look pal, root access is like virginity. I can give it away but I will never be able to get it back.
D - But you can remove my access later. And, talking about virginity, there are operations that "restore" virginity ;)
Me - yes, and I can take access to root from you afterwards, which would be similar to the procedure you are referring to. But it won't change the fact that the server was already fucked. -
It's a satisfying moment when you actually get work done on a personal project. It's comforting knowing I am capable of not being a lazy shit all the time. Gotta keep this up.1
-
When I was wading through some ancient scripts of my company forefathers, I found the empty shells of long forgotten codes, forever trapped in the bowels of this system.
Sometimes they are called, but nothing ever happens. pretty spooky3 -
When you stay up late doing a personal project the night before a workday -- knowing damn well you're going to be too tired to do anything the next day -- and have no one to blame but yourself 😁2

PowerShell is the slowest, most pathetic, unelegant attempt at copying bash.
The Command-Names are stupid and impossible to remember, the syntax is too awkward to put a name on it.
And holy shit how painfully slow can it be!
It feels like it's Java running in a Windows 95 VM running on a dead cow that was revived against its own will by a Cortana ghost that pretends to be GDPR-compliant.7 -
*receives email about project*

PM: "Hey I just sent you an email about a project"
No. Fucking. Shit.3 -
Client (on Tuesday): I was X features on my website before the weekend!
Me: Sure thing, I can do that. Just a reminder, my rates are $Y/hr and the changes won’t go up until I’ve been paid in full.
(Thursday morning)
Me: Here’s the changes you’ve requested on the test environment, please review. Also here’s the invoice for my work, as soon as that’s paid I can upload the changes.
Annnnnddd silence since then... I’m glad that I don’t have to count on just one client’s payment, but if you wanted before the weekend and I have it all set up, please don’t ghost me.2 -
I don't mean to fear monger or cause panic BUT
I know somebody who knows somebody that uses 4 spaces instead of tab..6 -
That awkward moment when you stay late night in the office to catch up some delayed work and suddenly remember that story you heard during lunch about the ghost that appears in the office at night8

Friend : So you're a computer programmer?
Me : Yes
Friend : Can you install Windows in my laptop??6 -
My act of kindness today was posting the solution to an issue that an entire thread was having. No one could figure out why their code wasn't working properly. I stumbled upon it after hours of fiddling(I had the same issue) and now we can be at peace. Don't be that guy that doesn't share knowledge. Now I can go back to being selfish till tomorrow 😄2

My lunch consists of smashing food in my mouth and watching YouTube videos. Sad but Satisfying.
Inspired by @Linux 's rant2 -
"You're a programmer?!"
"So, I have this app idea and I think it will be revolutionary!! I HAVE GREAT ideas for what it will look like - light blue here and white everywhere else. it's like facebook but different ..."
"It's really going to express my creativity as a person. I've poured my heart and soul into this idea. ITS GREAT RIGHT?!?!"6 -
It hurts man, it fucking hurts
I feel like I'm a ghost, like im not there. I don't really exist
I try to be better, actually doing something, anything. I really do. But nothing changes. So many times have I decided to finally make the change. This time I'm really gonna make it out of here. Yet I'm still here. Not one thing has changed. I'm still a shell of a person
It really fucking hurts
I just want to exist17 -
We as a 15ppl company are contractors for various big agencies, but we're most of the time under NDA. So I guess I'm a "Ghost-Front End Developer".

Windows 10 - Ghost bubbles
Suddenly the ghost bubbles started appearing, with feverish flickering of cursor, not able to click anything, had to do hard restart and the bubbles disappeared. Happened a couple of times, infrequent.
I thought my PC is virus infected. Upon search, many users reported the same. Looks like some windows update messed up the graphic drivers :(20 -
Must fun was definitely when I programmed the automated installing tool to make my life easier at my old work.
Imagine having to install about 30+ PC's in an period of 2 days and that repeating at least 1-2 times a week...Having standard programms to install like acrobat pro and more...
Just deployed needed software on the net. wrote a ghost installer programm and let him deploy the software for me. No continue smashing anymore. God bless that idea I had.7 -
So we found an interesting thing at work today...
Prod servers had 300GB+ in locked (deleted) files. Some containers marked them for deletion but we think the containers kept these deleted files around.
300 GB of ‘ghost’ space being used and `du` commands were not helping to find the issue.
This is probably a more common issue than I realize, as I’m on the newer side to Linux. But we got it figured out with:
`lsof / | grep deleted`4 -
Introducing. Snapchat privacy invasion. You can see where your added friends are if they do not disable it (enable ghost mode).
Good job :)5 -
You know you need sleep when you wave your hand under a paper towel dispenser and it's not automatic.1

This is my bottom drawer. That's +150 packets of honey from the cafe downstairs. I've been slowly collecting them since I started working here. I'm leaving soon and thinking about leaving them so the next dev can have a pleasant surprise 😂8

Ever spend hours debugging and your coworker mutters "... It's probably XYZ" and they are right? 😵1
-
I have a lab at uni where my lab group have to refactor some code from an open source project. We got assigned some Apache project and jfc that code is a mess. Little to no documentation, hard to navigate, tests that you have no idea what it's testing, and so on. On top of that the teacher expects us to spend more time than we have on it. I'll be glad when this course is over :))5
-
I hate having to reverse engineer an application you built, just to understand it. All because you haven't worked on it in months.

iOS dev here
Just wanted to share my experience on updating Xcode and why I schedule 3 hours for this process.
So, updating Xcode via the AppStore has always been flaky at best and ofcouse Xcode needs to be closed first. You hit update, the button turns gray, half an hour in you still see no progress...
That's why I often just download it from the dev center. But since Xcode Ghost the app is also wrapped in a signed container.
So,
Downloading: 10 minutes
Expaning: 60 minutes!!!
After that I move the app in place and fire it up, always have to close my music player first grrr...
After that Gate Keeper verifies the app for another 60 minutes.
Finally Xcode comes to live.
Only need to install new command line tools for another few minutes and I can continue coding.
Wait. Half my day is over!
Why Apple? Why?

internal recruiter reaches out to me

The other dev and I met with the PM to discuss some naming issues in one of our applications. Out of the 5 minutes we were together, the PM suggested 4 new features and a complete restructure of a module.1

"There are only two hard things in Computer Science: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-one errors."

I was playing kitchen with my niece today and we were baking a cake. After she put it in the toy oven, without thinking, I spat out:
"How long do you think it will build for?"
I've never seen such a confused look 😂 -
*get task assigned to me*
*complete task*
*get new task changing everything I did in the previous task*
Me: "Why is this getting completely changed? It meets the specs you sent."
PM: "Well, they took a while to approve the concept so I assumed it would be the same as the one on their current site. But now they want something different. Just change it."
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK IS THE POINT OF SENDING FOR APPROVAL IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO WAIT FOR THE APPROVAL?!2 -
OH
MY
GAAWWWWWD
The funniest thing happened today. I was helping a teammate rebase his branch onto master. Since his root was a merged local branch with 3 commits already in master, but squashed, we had to do an interactive rebase. So we have 3 commits to drop, and one to pick. He was using vsCode on windows, so he got vi to edit the rebase. I told him to change the first three pick for the letter d (alias for drop). Since he was not too familiar with vi, he only changed the first letter. I was like : dick is not a valid command, it's just d. Then he removed it and did the same thing again! When he finally understood, we both died of laughter, and so my ghost is now writting this rant. In the bus. Laughing like a crazy person. 😎 -
THE MOTHER FUCKING INTEGRATION TEST ALWAYS BREAKS IN CI ONLY, NOT ON MY MACHINE. SEEMS LIKE HE HAS SOME PERSONAL ISSUES WITH ME. THE FUKING HAUNTING GHOST4

I'm definitely not a person who says or thinks of those things liberally, but.. I think I might have a ghost in my apartment :)
I have no other sane/rational way to explain all those noises...7 -
The Sys Admin limited everyone's access on an application through the admin panel. He forgot I have access to the database and I now have full access 😂1

Fucking hate recruiters/headhunters they are all talk, but when things get real... They fucking ghost you - who does that?
And how is that a way of working?
What happened to being a professional, at least cancel our fucking appointment.
Asshats🤬🤬🤯🤯
From now on I will call you, so just lose my info.1 -
TIL one of the first few issues on the ISS was that they had a laptop that wouldn't boot. The (pirated, some say) copy of Norton Ghost they had on a floppy was also suffering from bad sectors, so it wouldn't boot. These guys had an entire floppy image beamed up from base to replace a copy of Norton Ghost. (Some say this was a pirated copy of Norton Ghost, as none of the floppies had the official label, instead all had either hand-written or custom-made labels.)
Then they had codepage issues.1 -
The company who said i passed the interview and got the job is not sending me email from hiring department to schedule interview. They said they gonna do it. But the recruiter told me they have a high demand of interviews so i guess they dont have time to reply to me back and hire me officially? Im still waiting its been a few days.
Or is this a slow sign of these shitfucks pulling back and will ghost me or reject me for no fucking reason even after telling me i passed and got the job but now they changed their minds for no reason?8 -
I'm reading (deciphering) the clients notes for modifications to their app and explaining to my PM what they want. At one point, he stopped me and said "How the fuck are you doing that? I don't understand how you can make those connections. Brilliant." 😂

When you're the only one in the office that codes in C++ and you get this email -- legacy project code here we come.1

My cat's brain is powerful enough to calculate and apply the exact physics of a long jump, with ballistics, flight aerodynamics, dynamic weight distribution using tail as stabilizer, all of that, and land a jump every time without failure.
Yet, it's not powerful enough to realize that can just walk straight through a slightly opened door using her body as a wedge. Or, she can just, you know, push the door open with her paw. When presented with an everyday task that involves physics, she acts like she's nothing but an ethereal ghost and fails miserably.
This makes me think that her jump computer is a very old hardwired part inherited from frogs, honed by evolution and compiled into wetware millions of years ago. Like an ancient analog computer that works flawlessly every time. She has no conscious access to its inner workings. She can use it, sure, but she doesn't understand it.
I wonder how many such parts do us humans posses.17 -
You wrote a little simple and clean mvc framework to work faster on some new projects. It can "compile" tags as {% var %} or {% array.key %} in the html code with support of {% for arrayOfHash in hash %} foreach construct and nice features, it can call api's callback in a smart way as ghost methods of a class, he can make routes with the route provider. You tested it and made a little example, after you went in the bathroom you read the index code and you started staring at the beauty and elegance of it. You go to bed happy and sleep. The day after you wake up and realize that it's unuseful because there's a lot of mvc framework that surely are better and ready to use, so you lost useful time. Have you ever feel this way? MVC: Me Versus Creativity.5

Trend:
The Kiki
- idiots get out of there car and dance with the door open...
Me
- Meh. Ghost riding the whip is old news.
——
New Trend:
The Kiki fail
- people get out and either fail or get betrayed.
Me: now I’m on board.
Great examples seen so far...
1. Women get out dancing, drops her bag (on purpose) in dancing. A motorcycle comes along and steals her purse.
Me: Great. I hope they get away with it too. I like the criminals more than the idiot in this case.
2. Dude gets out and starts dancing. Driver speeds up. The guy holds on to the car telling him to “STOP!”. He stops, the guy goes head first through the window of the driver (its down) and I assume right on his head.
Me: mmmmm delicious7 -
Working on a legacy app and couldn't find in the DB, fields for description, status, title, and assigned user.
I found them.
They were in the fields: User1, User2, User3, and User4.
How the hell does that happen?1 -
Lesson Learned: Don't ever be so ambitious that you are no longer realistic about your abilities. I remember when I started out, I would give unbelievably short TTC estimates for medium/hard tasks that would undoubtedly take some time.3

I hate only a handful of things in this world. Including: stepping in water with socks on, when the toilet paper rips, and business people.

Achievement of the day: breaking GitHub doing a forced push.

Work in the morning and here we are devRant, we have to quit doing this to ourselves. We need to take a break. I'm sorry, but you have consumed my life. The chuckles, feed refreshes, and +1s will be but treasured moments I have with you. Wait.. Who am I kidding? I need you! Don't leave, I'll stay with you forever.1

Some question for ya creators
What was the first 10 rants here?
How many users are in devRant? (including ghost usernames)
Server costs how much in a day?
How did ya guys met together?
P.S. I remember you two had a building with the devrant logo in the top. Where is the location? (@trogus)9 -

He's the total inversion of a narcissist. Hes a ghost.
He must be the most boring person on earth or the most interesting/mysterious.
Like, what is he hiding? No posts, no comments. Just upvotes.
My bet: Hes an international fugitive or a spy. Get em!
Who else wants to baselessly speculate about long time users who keep to themselves and or highlight their favorite mime?9 -
It had been too long that I had a nightmare that I wished I never had. I had one this early morning.
I was in a foreign metropolitan city with public transport trains, skyscrapers and everything. I had no phone, no cash, no card. I could have asked help from the people I see on the street but in the dream I missed that notion. I was fine for first few hours (dream time) walking along just by myself and gradually the panic mood sunk in. I was alone with no help right in the middle of broad day light among people at a busy city.
Now that I have written it down, it doesn't sound that scary at all. There was no ghost nor paranormal activity involved, no accident, no scary height, no fire, no drowning, nothing really scary at all.
I was totally scared shitless in that dream though.4 -
As a tribute to Alice's fun discoveries, here's my discovery.
If you choose the weekly rant banner on the rant feed and open the rant which is showing at the top of your screen, you will see a ghost of the banner while the rant is loading.4 -
My dream project -
An App that will reduce human impressions from this country without bloodshed.
Seriously ... People are everywhere, here. It is surety that you will get to see some or many people, no matter where you are. Park, Jungle, Mountain, River bed, Abandoned Land, Osama's bunker, House with annabelle ghost, Cloud, Space, Other planet .... damn
That way I am only helping mankind and nature. And then I will get nominated for Nobel Prize too.3 -
So i send my phone to the warranty because of the problema that you can see at the image, and the answer of the company was that it is normal and they don'r repair it.
Can you guys explain me how on the world this is a feature of the display...
PS: the white part you see is a ghost of the previous image3 -
Today we reached 30 "dev-ghosting" episodes since the beginning of the year.
What is "dev-ghosting"?
It's every time a developer decides to completely disappear from a recruitment procedure instead of just texting "Hey, I am no longer interested in your offer".
You can call them as many times as you want, even if they were supposed to be at your office 2 hours ago for negotiating the salary after dozens of "I'd love to join your company as soon as possible": they are gone.
Forever.1 -
Our "Sys admin" knows nothing. 9/10 I do his job for him because he either doesn't know how or doesn't want to learn. I write all of the scripts HE should be writing. He manages Linux servers but doesn't know how to navigate the command line (even on windows) without using a 1. 2. 3. guide to what he needs done. Am I crazy or is the "Sys Admin" title giving him too much credit?4
-
Our support department got this the other day. We host their email and only provide support for that lol
p.s. thanks @nblackburn for catching me forgetting to attach my image 😅2 -
Reading through old post-it notes and found a TODO that says "fix code" with no indication of a project it refers to lol1

"When an engineer builds a building, it's very well built, but it's so ugly that the people tear it down. When an architect builds a building, it's very beautiful, but it falls down" - difference between systems engineer and systems architect
You must combine both, but the latter (beauty) is less important.8 -
Estimating time before consulting the dev on the task he/she will be working on is like pouring the milk in before the cereal. CRINGE.3

Time to start a new interview since these shitfucks will never send me email to hire me and apparently it doesnt fucking matter if i passed hr and technical interview
quite frankly im very unexcited, tired and annoyed of taking interviews. My full time job has became taking interviews and nothing happening afterswards ever
This bullshit is extremely annoying. If this keeps on going i will demand getting paid for taking an interview. You have a privilege of interviewing ME, the LORD, and then fuck with me by reject or ghost me? You shall pay for the damages of wasting my time. Fuck you3 -
Simply walking. While walking I'm getting many ideas how to implement my features/changes. Especially when they are interesting.

Nobody asks about your education because you have to self-educate to pass an interview.
Usually, you work for a foreign company. And usually, you pay small taxes because you're not counted as an employee.
You pay lots of money to volunteers helping your country's army. I think every volunteer knows IT-workers help the army a lot. Though others help too, more or less.1 -
I know it's not our nature, but go outside and enjoy the beautiful day today! (as long as its nice where you are).

Working night has to be the most relaxing thing, I'm all alone at the office with some good relaxing classical music, nobody to interfere, good coffee and code and the average office ghost, looking out at the street below I can see the city slowly coming to life in the morning. Someone should make a movie about three ghosts that haunt a BLOODY CROOK who makes his employees and coworkers burn the midnight oil in the bloody CHISTMAS EVE because the fucker haven't finished something that should have been ready TWO FUCKING WEEKS AGO.
The ghost of Christmas past shows the fucker that he was a bloody LAZY KID who made his elderly relatives cook, host, clean, wash the dishes and everything else all by themselves during family-gathering season.
The ghost of Christmas present shows him his employees' children teary eyed that daddy doesn't get to watch cartoons with them before bedtime (we're not Christians but just because my house is a steak-free zone it doesn't mean my kids don't expect gifts from santa, like most kids in their school!)
The ghost of Christmas future shows a Netflix documentary on how the fucker got arrested for being a BLOODY CROOK that gets played by some actor who is a hollywood-level jerk who beats his wife. And the show gets a 3% on rotten tomatoes, just to salt the wound. Oh, and a voiceover says the real BLOODY CROOK hanged himself in prison or something and his family is happy he did it.
Fuck, I hate, for real hate, people whose tardiness bleeds out on honestly-working people. I had to wake up one of my devs to fix the SHIT that the bloody crook higher-up shat on us.
My guy is getting a raise as soon as I can scream at the bean counters and my boss will be getting some loooooong, data-rich report on how the bloody crook's department is pissing in our soup.
Fuck everything.2 -
I just realized that I didn't post anything since the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

OK guys the time has come for my home PC to finally become 100% pure Linux (No dual booting).
But I will need to keep a backup of my windows installation (Just so i don't have to download everything over in case i return to the demon that is windows).
What is a good image capturing program?
Was going to use ghost because of past experience but just want to hear some alternatives!6 -
Is it me or software subscriptions make developers lazy?
There is a great photo editing software: Capture One. Every year they release a new major version, so users need to buy an upgrade. In the past developers packed a bunch of big changes into major update, also they released 3 minor updates yearly, and every minor update brought some cool features. But then they added subscription model which was cheaper then perpetual model. And at the same time major updates became not that cool. Developers started to add enterprise features needed by museums, features involving other camera brands users, changes targeted at newbies and so on. For perpetual model users most of these changes are not worth 80-255 EUR yearly (depends on license type and offs) but is ok for subscription model users because they continue using the software and even small updates and enhancements are fine for them.
Not every major update is that weak but many of them are not worth upgrade. And developers are not motivated to do more cool stuff because subscription model users will continue paying for their subscriptions.1 -
On This Episode of Ghetto Medium..
Posted after midnight for extra spooky effects. Read in the dark at your own risk. You've been warned.
So my mother has been on a binge watching shows like long island medium (apparently the taller your hair the closer you are to god or something), and every time we talk she begins at length to talk about, you guessed it.. 'ghosts.'
Now don't get me wrong, I've had some 'spooby' shit occur in my lifetime, the sort that will tighten your sphincter faster than bill cosby asking you if you want some koolaid or grape drank, but I digress.
The ghost talk is tiring. Lately theres been a *flood* of these new shows, purportedly showing mediums and people who can 'look into the other side' and I realize just how vapid and ridiculous it's all become, as if they all are being personally haunted by the ghost of John Edwards burnt out husk of a career. Theres long island beehive big-hair medium, celebrity medium, allison DuBois (the inspiration for that one sappy show *medium*) whos red hair and vacant stare speak of glimpses into centuries past like an intimate unseen horizon. or maybe she forgot to unplug her curling iron in a hotel one time and has been rendered permanently catatonic. And who can forget *Beyond With James Van Praagh* (everyone) whos face, as measured by the width of his mustache, appears to be expanding at a constant rate like a bad image macro edit thats been memed and repasted a thousand times. Then theres Chip Coffee, whos name is about as believable as his teaching degree on the show *Psychic Kids* where he mentored, again, you guessed it, *psychic kids*. Of course theres Tyler Henry, a youthful, uh, "flamboyant" medium for celebrities with ghost problems. Never trust a man with two names, this ones no exception, he looks so clean cut hes either secretly mormon, or secretly gay, maybe both. I'm not judging, but I am saying if I ever saw his clean cut, smooth, wrinkless (seriously, how tyler? how?), all american face, say smiling that subtle smile outside my kitchen sliding glass door at 3 am, his face watching me from the pitch dark outside, I wouldn't at all be surprised, except for the hospital bill I'd have to pay after shitting a brick and needing anal surgery.
At this rate we have mediums popping out left and right, like clowns at one of them R.L Stein nightmare carnivals, or beggers outside a methodone clinic. Geez, they're coming out the wood work, like those painting you see with hidden faces in them, or wheres-waldo posters, only you're trying to find the non-waldo guy amongst all the characters because they're ALL waldo: goofy acting, goofy dressing, and just all around goofy looking.
At this rate I'm fully expecting "pet medium" (starring a character named Stephen King and his marital problems, played by johnny depp eating way to much corn), and "haunted objects medium", and "car medium" (it's just seinfeld in a car, talking to psychics instead of other people), and "ghetto medium."
Today on this episode of "Ghetto Medium"..
Medium: Teneesha, aw yeah girl, u *definitely* ded gurl, uh huh! You WAY to white too be alive, you done passed over gurl!
And in the next episode of Ghetto Medium, one man claims "every time I bend over I can hear "wOoOoOoOoO!, Is my asshole possessed? Find out is it real or fake, and what our verdict is in Ghost Medium, episode 3: A Haunting In My Nether-regions."
Cut commercial break.
"Jerry Springer: One women asks, 'jerry, is my unborn child's foreskin haunted? And later today we ask the crowd, would you have sex with a ghost?"
Welcome to American television 'programming' in 2019.
Yes, it's all brainwashing.2 -
HR people who contact you to schedule an interview and you give them your available dates and times and then they ghost you...what are you even doing?3

tldr := Windows 10...
So I had Windows 8.1 / Linux dual boot system. And decided that, what the heck, I'll try upgrading to WinX. That went well. Surprisingly. I even used WinX for a while. Windows 10 and linux side by side, on the same disk, just different partitions. And since everything was so nice, I've decided to let Windows install some updates. After reboot, uefi linux entry is gone. What? How? Well, after update windows found 'unrecognized' partition, and, since it is urecognized, it must be unused. So it helpfully fucked it up. That was linux uefi partition (yes, I kept them separate).
Long story short, windows8.1 back from original image, side by side with linux. Lesson learned, gonna ispect each windows update twice before installing. And not gonna touch WX even with a 10-foot stick!1 -
Last day at my current job.
It feels like my soul has left but my body is trapped in the office until the end of the day 😂2 -
I figured I would share my Capstone from this semester with a community that might be interested. An eclipse plugin that was developed in our lab is able to implicitly track developer eye gazes as they work in an IDE (eclipse in this case). Before I began work on it, source code, bug reports, and stack overflow documents could be tracked with all of the data on said documents being extracted. For example, if source code is being tracked, everything from the file name and class/method name down to statement types are collected. The tracking isn't on still images. Since it's within an IDE, you can open multiple files, scroll, and modify -- all while tracking is collecting accurate data based on the (x, y) gaze coordinate and the handler assigned to the type of document/file being viewed.
My job was to extend this functionality to track gazes on UML class diagram documents. This means I had to gather data at the highest level: the class/connection being looked at, down to the lowest level: members/methods, their types and containing classes.
Being new to Java's EMF, GEF, and eclipse plugin development, I had a bit of a learning curve. Anyways here is the poster of the functionality I added. 🙃
Not much of a rant haha. -
What is the point of these fucking retards contacting ME first on linkedin to schedule an interview and then forever ghost me? All of them tell me how everything was good and they will search for more clients and let me know as soon as they find a project but never ever reply back? Why are clowns in this fucking industry so sinister and fucking cancerous?7

I honestly love arguments that deal with programming and the "proper" ways to do things in the workplace. It makes work slightly more enjoyable lol.1

I wanna fuck a certain dev with a rusty pipe that was smeared in ghost pepper chilis... hopefully they get tetanus, inflammation and an allergy shock all at once, dying a cripple painful death.
Afterwards I spike them in front of the company with the wonderful laminated piece of paper:
"The difference between being right and being dead is where that pipe took place".
Fucking numbnut discusses every meeting like they know it all - and don't you dare critique Mr High and Almighty, cause then they will discuss as long as it takes without mercy.
HR wasn't mused as Mr Almighty filed a complaint cause I kicked them out of a meeting.
Now I've got Mr Almighty and Red tape and additional meetings.

Wpf Rant
Seems kinda retarded but it should be trivial to reference a ListBox in a SelectionChanged event doing something like SomeListBox.Items[someIndex] = new TextBox()
in order to replace a simple textblock element with a textbox element that accepts input (replace-in-place), but it's proven to be the most long, aggravating series of unnecessary convoluted bullshit I have encountered so far.
And when I do something like ((ListBox)e.Source).SelectedItem = new TextBox(), nothing break per se but I get no god damn error or feedback, as if it worked, but nothing fucking changed.
I can only assume I'm fucking retarded or like most of the shit coming out of microsoft, WPF is a broken pile of bullshit.
I'd ask on here but every time I ask technical questions I never get any fucking answers. Like a ghost town around here sometimes..11 -
I finally got my friend and ghost writer @xexelias to join devrant
The guy who writes all my emails for me is now able to see all the cringey memes I share from devRant and contribute his own cringe8 -
I'm trying to deploy Ghost 1.x to Heroku to host my future coding blog. If (when) I achieve it I already know what the first post will be about Lol1
-
For those that do any kind of non-trivial tech blogging, what platform/product/etc would you recommend?
I've found pros and cons to rolling my own (several times) and static generators like Jekyll and Octopress, hosted services like Medium and Ghost, but self-hosted Wordpress is still my pick at the moment. I would be keen to hear what others are using and what advantages you get (e.g. ease of deployment, good editing experience, cheap hosting, lightweight / performant, versatile code embedding and presentation etc)2 -
I was hearing Mary on a Cross by Ghost, while using ChatGPT for some TreeJS bs, and I randomly asked it to provide me the lyrics to the song and it denied it on the basis that it contains offensive lyrics, I found 0 offense on those lyrics, but then again, I am a shitty Catholic (I don't believe in religion but that is the one I was raised on) and we then went on an argument about even if data is "offensive" it should be something that should be provided20

Important merge request howto:
- Hey, I implemented very important server change and it doesn't break compatibility with current clients!
- Cool, but we don't need this compatibility code. We'll adopt our clients as soon as the merge request is accepted.
- Ok, I removed support of current clients.
- Cool, but it's too dangerous to adopt our clients rights now. We'll accept your merge request later. Some other day... somewhere... some other time... -
Which static site generator are you using?
Jekyll vs Hugo vs Gatsby vs Hexo ...
I want to build my personal blog using it, I've also used ghost.
Which one is better in terms of performance?6 -
I came to the conclusion that 1D can (as in "It IS, but it being only the case when you apply the following") also be 4D, 3D, ..., nD, if you have e.g. a vector with only one element, which can be any number, inside and add more and more elements into this vector with a bunch of zeros.4

Rewriting scripts to blacklist IPs of hacked accounts from SMTP logs. Very fun learning experience. Not really any other cool projects for me lol

How on earth is there any "sane" software (eco-)system or will it always be so crazy because as pieter hintjens might have said all this soft- and hardware is created by this social animal called human, with all it's faults and aberrations...
So it was just, that I could not print - probably because of this bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/... - couldn't install a newer ghostscript. So I would scp my files inside an Ubuntu-VM from which I could print. Sometimes I could pdf2ps some files or transfer back the ps-file and print on my host machine, but mostly not... U n t i l today when I installed the fucking debug symbols package for ghostscript and I could just fucking print. Heisenbug, ghost error or what?1 -
I'll stay later at work to get something working/finished rather than save it for the morning because there is no greater feeling like coming into work and your code works great. What a feeling.

I post that im hiring. Devs send me their resume to hire them. I ghost them. They spam me to answer. I say its all looking good but ghost them. They email me with their resumes. I still ghost them.
Feels good experiencing this from the other side for once. Vengeance is refreshing4 -

I'm sea sick. Feel like migraine started becoming a real person and kicking me.
This whole site is just so fucking shitty.
Everythings moving. Spinning. Neon bright.
If anyone of you were responsible for that, I hope a ghost bites you everytime in your private parts while shitting....5 -
The bugs that make you think are the best/worst.
Had a ghost foreign key constraint from a dropped table. Cant drop it from a non existant table.
Turns out the dev copied a file for the new table and since you can technically name those foreign keys anything you want, there were no errors when he ran it.
Also sloppy/overworked dev teammates are the worst...
Also I'm pretty sure rule 2 of programming is "Never Copy and Paste" -
I've been in a rut lately... I haven't been programming as much as I used to and haven't had fun/exciting projects to work on. I think most of this is due to a lot of life changes happening at once. Regardless, I have felt super unmotivated lately and want to get back to my happy place -- coding. Have you guys ever experienced this "rut"? Right now my current job is primarily a support position with a bit of development. But it's not nearly enough to feel like I'm advancing my development skills. Any feedback is welcome 😌3
-
Our support dept. got this the other day. We only host their email and provide support for only that lol.4

My wife is buying a small business. They have a website that I'm going to have to take over, and I have a feeling I'm going to want to redo it (it's not terrible looking, but I'm pretty sure it's WP, so just no thank you).
Was just wondering if anybody had any reccomendations for a cheap/free headless CMS?
Saw Ghost for $25/month but it has "user" limitations (as in, seemingly, limits to your site traffic). I'm just basically looking for cheap image/blog hosting queryable from a REST/GQL API. I'm considering just making a simple frontend for my wife to write markdown blogs up to S3 or something if there's no cheaper option.11 -
Top reason to not be a dev? There are so many ways to shoot yourself in a foot. Some of them are creative, some of them are fun. Unless it happens to you.1

A new company I work at just revamped their website but decided to keep their live chatting system. LiveZilla.
What a piece of shit system. Forums are a ghost town, and documentation is crap. Full of bugs. Programmers' nightmare -
My cousin want to host a website.
Initially he want a blogging site (UX need to be customisable).?
Also he need to be smooth and fast
He is not a tech guy.
What framework should I suggest?
And what are some cheap options for its hosting?
PS: I have suggested him ghost for now. Also I will have to deploy and manage the site maintenance.4 -
Not a horror. I'm rewriting services.
It started as a help request. I was asked to help with completing a service dealing with push notifications which was a research prototype. It was suggested to keep core part of it, but it was so awful that I just removed all files and wrote the service from scratch.
The second service had been developed for more than a year by a junior and then by our manager who wanted to complete it as fast as possible, without taking care of code quality. Then I was asked to take over the project and after some time I agreed with one condition: I'll have 1 month on takeover. But when I looked at the code, it became clear that it's much faster and better to rewrite everything except API and database than to takeover existing code.
The third service dealing with file exchange was working, but the junior who wrote it advised to rewrite it because it was a very simple service. So, I initiated rewriting, designed a new API and reviewed the final result.
And now I'm dealing with the fourth one. It was developed in my team but not under control. Now, when I "inherited" this complicated project, I decided to rewrite it because it should be simple, but it doesn't. It features reflection, layers inside layers, strange namespaces, strange solution structure. And that's after months of refactorings and improvements. So, wish me luck because I want to keep part of the infrastructure, but I don't know if it's possible. -
Office prank I pulled: Halloween party, the office is decorated, and there is a fake spider that I use to scare unwary victims.
Office prank other pulled: a printout picture of the grudge ghost was place in places like, laptop, side of a wall, clinic curtain, etc. That even if Halloween is over there as still some victims.. -
Grafana managed alerts are so fucking over complicated it surprises me that it is a professional product.
And if you need help, the grafana community forum is a fucking ghost town
And the docs suck too8 -
As many of us are filling out applications right now, I have another complaint about accessibility. If a company ever reps for Accessibe or their clients use accessibe, then ghost them immediately (they don’t care about developers opinion).6

i had this crazy dream that there's a code ghost that erases the blocks of code i wrote and produces bugs to my programs... damn this is the first time i got really scared.

I was wondering why all images on a rant were a grey ghost silhouette until I stumbled upon another rant with a different aspect ratio image. It's not a ghost, just a fuck up of images.
You had me spooked there devRant. -

Not entirely Dev related so sorry 'bout that, but I have some form of vacation to spend, where I'll be at home working on my thesis project and preparing my last exam (wooo almost done with the shit). Since most of my friends are away for the holidays and I'm a huge fucking nerd and also somewhat a shitty weeb, can anyone suggest some anime related with tech or coding? I know of ghost in the shell but there are so many I don't know which might suit me. I kinda prefer modern/digitalised graphic styles (common in 2012+ animes to say). Also, girl-friendly to be able to watch them with my gf is a plus but not a necessity. -
First thing I see when I log online is Masturbate between work. heh. Oh that and a hate rant/lure to get some guy to come online and feel like crap or respond with a ghost account.
Seems most of the amusing accounts got caught off way back.
Now we're stuck with wonderful beautiful sweet people like @Hagarth trying to be some technoviking of code and @floydimus talking about getting humped in the butt.56 -
looking for suggestions for a self hosted CMS. I tried Ghost, and it looks real nice, but there's no option to have just 1 section be private, you can only make the whole thing private. I tried Drupal but honestly it's just way too complicated for what I need, and doesn't look very aesthetically pleasing.
basically, here's the features I'm looking for:
- ability to set privacy/access control on a per-page or per-section basis
- Markdown for content editing
- ability to use regular HTML when needed
- ability to upload content via an API (so that I can publish documentation via my gitlab CI)4 -
For those that toggles on:
* Dark mode
* Privacy screen
* DND
* Silent mode
* Disappearing Messages
* Turned off Read receipts
What exactly is your problem?5 -
Recently, my hardy MacBook Pro 2012 gave up the ghost. So I'm in the market for getting a new laptop. Which one(s) would you guys recommend given the following use cases I have planned? Listed in order of importance:
- Getting used to Linux. Eventually I plan on replacing my desktop PC's Windows install with Linux and would like to try some flavors on the laptop.
- Software development w/ Java (Spring), Android, Rust, Go, Node
- Music making
- General web browsing, heavy YouTube use
- A little bit of story writing6 -
