How do I un-idiot my users when it comes to clicking on dodgy email-links??
Got a forwarded email just there from a user who said;
Is the below ok to open?
I just tried but got a popup saying I've been blocked from opening it.
I'm not sure who it is coming from and I am not waiting on anything but as it says its from dropbox and is important, i know it's okay.
Can you unblock the link ASAP please?
This is really impeding my work-day as I need to know what it is and act accordingly.
The Original email came from a random jumble of letters with a subject line of 'important dropbox program' - not only does it look dodgy but its english is horrible! It said;
"Hi tu my freind,
You tu still read a pending verrry important document sent by one of your own contact to be vieweddd.
Install "Highly Confidential english.pdf" by clickinggg here
*insert link leading to something called 'viral-update-trojan.exe'*"
I mean, seriously... help!!! 😢
We have sent emails explaining how to hover over links and to not to click them if it looks wrong.
No one does it.
We hired a company to send fake phishing emails to train users in what to do.
It made no difference!
We now make people 'verify' their email addresses when opening any sort of link to try get them to actually look at what they're opening.
We also strip emails of original attachments and create 'safe' html copies as we can't trust them to look at what they're opening.
Everyone complains about it but Jesus Christ, this is why!!!
Its so exhausting!! What is wrong with people!!! Argh!!! 😤16
That feeling when your post went viral and have 500+ concurrent users and still your server works fine.12
Today my dear friends 😊, I will tell you WHY THE FUCK DO I FUCKING HATE WHATSAPP FROM THE CORE OF MY HEART 😡
The original idea of having a real time silent conversation with somebody around the globe is amazing.
But why did Brian Acton, think that the users will be humans?
You talk to your loved ones? Fine by me.
You use with for work communication? Fine by me.
You don't give a fuck about your privacy (because of lack of awareness or some other reason)? Your choice. I am fine with it.
But you spam the shit out of each other with repeated 'Good Morning' and 'Good Night' rainbow coloured flower meme with your most idiotic unicorn posed photo on it? JUST FUCK OFF.
The content is just moved from one group to another. Stupid random images and videos with no purpose at all are just blindly forwarded from one user to another.
One assholes sends it to hundred others. Then those assholes send it back to original sender and other hundreds. They post it in mutual groups countless time. The cycle keeps repeating and your phone is jammed like a toilet pipe with shit everywhere.
Repost after repost after repost. No rules, no regulations.
Duplicate and repeated content is over-clocking WhatsApp's servers.
Things get worse, when videos and images of people dying are circulated and THESE IDIOTS MAKE THEM GO VIRAL.
People say they have no courage to watch such things, yet go ahead and watch the entire video/all the images.
I mean how on earth can you watch such disturbing stuff on loop?
I hate it when they shove their screen in my face and ask me to watch such things saying how disturbing it is.
God damn fuck!!! If it is disturbing then stop fucking watching it. Stop fucking forwarding it to other mindless dicks. Stop fucking asking me to watch it.
Enjoying dark humour and watching disturbing things are different things. Though I enjoy dark humour, but never will I wish ill of others or forward such images or videos.
PEOPLE SHOULD FUCKING UNDERSTANDING AND RESPECT MY PREFERENCES.
I show them a small interesting educational video and then bash the shit out of me saying that it was boring and I wasted their time.
IF SO THEN FUCK OFF WITH YOUR STUPID CONTENT. SHOVE YOUR PHONE UP YOUR ASS AND DANCE AROUND NAKED WHILE YOUR PHONE VIBRATES WITH ALL THOSE STUPID NOTIFICATIONS.
WhatsApp should be banned. It not only causes emotional damage, but that shit is fucking annoying.20
How to reproduce:

Is that skeumorphism of words/sound by Unix developers ?5
Like the new feature on Google Play Store where the changelog can be directly seen in a dropdown on the updates page.4
I'm experiencing a bit of what a viral content might feel like on Twitter, thanks to this masterpiece someone left in our lab 😂5
So I heard about this new Git ransomware that is demanding Bitcoin if not fulfilled removing commits and projects...
And then I thought to myself...
What will they get my deleting all my repos of projects that I told myself that I will finish one day.
I guess they will be doing me a favor. Doing something that I have been putting off for ages.2
The entire reason I became a developer was so that I could one day build something that I can say has/had a handful of users, that I could build something that helped save someone's life, that helped someone in their time of need.
That reason was fulfilled when I built my only successful and proudest project during a cold night in 2011. I was 16 at the time, and here in South India, there was a major cyclone affecting a portion of our country (Chennai/Tamil Nadu). A lot of my family were in affected areas, and I didn't know what I could do being so far away (around 400kms/250mi away, in Bangalore).
I stayed up all night to build what was then known as ChennaiRains.org. It was a simple website, a directory and a safe house for everyone's information. Whoever needed help, whoever was ready to give help, whoever was volunteering their travel, their time. I didn't think it would help much. I just wanted to make a small difference.
Next morning, after the hangover of the all-nighter I pulled faded away, I see that the website went viral after a few shares on Twitter. The community was so supportive of my little project to help my family and friends. It caught a peak traffic of a million users overnight, no ads, no money made from this, I just earned the experience of a lifetime. It eventually helped a lot of people in need, connected a lot of volunteers and victims.
It has been the epitome of my life. It's the reason I still develop applications to-date, even if they are simple. Somewhere out there, someone needs it, and I want to be able to help to them :)4
Reasons 1 and 2 arent that important to me. The main reason I code is #3.
1) Brain exercise. I always feel sharp after a coding session, even if it ended in disaster.
2) Lots to do! There's never a full day in code. Make your own universe, if you so desire.
3) Pride. I have a pride problem. I never felt proud of myself no matter what I do. I graduated with a melancholy feeling, same deal when getting my license, same deal when passing a test (God, glad that's over!)... But code makes me proud. I love what I make. I want to show everyone. I want to show it to everyone before it's even finished because I just can't wait. I want everyone to use it and to love it. Because I sure do, and it's the best thing ever.
I could make a viral video, produce a triple platinum record, or build a billion dollar business and still not feel the same level of genuine satisfaction and happiness that I may get from writing good code.
It always keeps me coming back.
In my opinion during the past 18 hours devRant has gone from a great resource - to a must have indispensable developer community. It shows the power of Internet communication.
So many new developers arriving are making it so much more fun and valuable. I enjoyed devRant before but now it is amazing.
I am having a tough time keeping up - which is great.4
Not asking students to learn the code. Seriously stop doing that.
Instead motivate them to understand the logic and then build it when required.3
I can't stop myself from thinking like a computer when I'm sick.
The OS that runs my body is kinda fucked up right now. It was very vulnerable and now it got infected by viral executables sent out by an agent which happens to be on same work network that I'm connected to. Well, it executed and populated feelings of infatuation and crush in my heart drive. ( pun intended )
As a precaution, I patched the vulnerabilities by masking response of my Emotions API.
To further secure my system, I'll be executing memory intensive tasks that will also put my hardware to it's limits. According to my estimates, this will stall further execution of this infection and eventually kill them while rewarding me with upgraded hardware.4
It was Adblock Plus that was making my Firefox Android terribly slow.
Just realized it after cursing 🔥Firefox for months.3
This weekly is getting really popular with so many rants coming in.
Shows the extent to which real coders/programmers/developers are tormented by the incompetent education system.
Here is my two cents:
Students should be taught to build their logic on paper before jumping on to their keyboards.2
That moment when your rant has gone so viral that you have to force close devRant app. Coz your phone is buzzing every half an hour....10
My name is Viral. Yes, the legal name. The birth name. The professional name. I'm not even kidding.
Speaking of profession, I just started out with web development and GitHub and shit, and here's my first repository:
Please have a look and let me know if it's any good for the first project... Also I don't know what the Fork and Star means but I'd love to have some 🌟 if that's free and helpful :-)
BTW my name is spelt as "we-rul"4
Apparently someone posted on Apple's developer forum 2 weeks ago about this root privilege escalation vulenerability in macOS but it took a viral tweet to get any action. 😐1
what a gem i found on the side of screen while viewing stack overflow :https://meta.stackoverflow.com/ques...
Long story short, a teacher gave a sassy reply to his student's question , the answer got viral on reddit and SO admins are going bonkers 😂😂4
Anyone here tried the bluewhale game?
Apparently, government banned it and local tv channel is running news about it ( around 2 months after it became viral globally ). Many overnight "experts" think it is an actual mobile application game uploaded on all stores. What a joke!
I don't understand how anyone can be stupid enough to fall for such things..3
Just imagine sicknesses spreading through internet.
I mean real human sicknesses. Of course your laptop can’t generate aids, but hey, did you ever have a song stuck in your head, repeated infinitely? Memes, viral videos, modern pop music, it looks just like perfect delivery mechanisms.
Human brain is flawed and buggy, vulnerable to countless things like optical illusions, uncanny valley, nlp and others. It’s obvious that there is some audiovisual input sequence that may have arbitrary side effects.
We are towards invention of some precisely formed pieces of information that’ll damage your brain forever, maybe drive you insane so there’ll be no way back. Delivered via viral media straight to your brain, destroying it irreversibly.
Be ready to face the future.2
It would be very cool to have a wrong random username showing. But yeah a lot of extra work for an April fool's prank 😁
BTW who has 10101010? Can we do a viral binary hunt thingy among us and tag the person here?
Working with machine learning gets very tiring sometimes.
Waiting for the results, tuning the parameters...
Arghhh....why does it keep getting stuck...1
Am I only the one who finds the pen pineapple apple pen video lame and boring?
Don't get people who finds it catchy and viral.
I had learnt my lesson about the reality of group projects in the very first semester of graduation.
And from then on till the final project in my postgraduation, I refused to have a team and worked on every project alone (except for a few times when I couldn't convince the professor and even then made sure to not depend on anyone else).1
*after getting to know about Pokemon go from here I downloaded it from the net.(not yet released in India) and I'm so addicted to it. I have already caught 3 Pokémon.
got it installed on my colleagues phone and we both are now roaming near by our office to find some more. absolutely loving it.2
Delays. Delays in payment, delays in scope and spec delivery, delays from the graphics guys, delays from the X guy, the Y guy, this company, that company. No matter what the reason, delays leave that leave the Dev waiting and sitting around despondent and losing interest faster than the second to latest viral video.
Is there any rant/post that is atleast a week old but still got 0 ++ ?
That is neither any upvote nor any downvote.
P.S. Don't take it up as a challenge for this one.2
I didn't know I wanted the breadcrumbs so badly in the new VSCode 1.26.
It's a relief from continually hopping to the explorer and code-outline activity bar.
What's the difference between data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence?
Finally I finished the exams, now I have to write my thesis. An agency who wants remain anonymous at the moment told my supervisor to choose a student who will works out on the ransomware argument. The relator was a little bit scared about consequences but I'm pressing to write a controlled ransomware in a closed network brtween virtual machines. What qualities a good ransomware should has?
Mutable structure to avoid antivirus detection? Good exploits and vulnerability scanners to make itself viral? The payload should stay in the code or should be downloaded from a server? I need some reference on analysis of vx codes, any help?
Learning to use logging in Python for an existing application.
🙇Feeling enlightened looking at the first log file output.3
Right now, most of my friends in whatsapp are doing one of those stupid viral message challenge that is designed to "testify friendships".
This latest one that i got goes something like this: they ask to send one of your pic to them and they will add it to their status. Then you have to also add their pic they send you as your status. Also you have to forward the challenge to your friends.
I don't know who comes up with such crazy stupid messages that is designed to force people change their perception of friendship. It's amazing how simple and gullible people are to such messages.
Spoiler Alert: yep, i also send it to few of my friends just for the heck of it.4
"Google Search Fixer" is a must on Firefox Android iff you use Google search.
Now I can finally start using Firefox again..
PS: I was using Edge till now
"Jose Simms cut a deal with police in Torrington, Connecticut, to turn himself in if the post went viral. It did and he didn’t."
- who would have ever guessed that would happen...
Microsoft Python Language Server SUCKS in both Visual Studio and VSCode. 😵😩😠
Doesn't provide suggestions for relative imports like "from ..".
Sticking to jedi...
I spend so much time trying to come up with great app ideas, and something as simple as The List App (http://li.st) goes viral.2
Hey Guys !
How much backup does your UPS provide and what kind of battery setup are you using for it ?8
