How do I un-idiot my users when it comes to clicking on dodgy email-links??
Got a forwarded email just there from a user who said;
Good afternoon,
Is the below ok to open?
I just tried but got a popup saying I've been blocked from opening it.
I'm not sure who it is coming from and I am not waiting on anything but as it says its from dropbox and is important, i know it's okay.
Can you unblock the link ASAP please?
This is really impeding my work-day as I need to know what it is and act accordingly.
Regards... user.
The Original email came from a random jumble of letters with a subject line of 'important dropbox program' - not only does it look dodgy but its english is horrible! It said;
"Hi tu my freind,
You tu still read a pending verrry important document sent by one of your own contact to be vieweddd.
Install "Highly Confidential english.pdf" by clickinggg here
*insert link leading to something called 'viral-update-trojan.exe'*"
I mean, seriously... help!!! 😢
We have sent emails explaining how to hover over links and to not to click them if it looks wrong.
No one does it.
We hired a company to send fake phishing emails to train users in what to do.
It made no difference!
We now make people 'verify' their email addresses when opening any sort of link to try get them to actually look at what they're opening.
We also strip emails of original attachments and create 'safe' html copies as we can't trust them to look at what they're opening.
Everyone complains about it but Jesus Christ, this is why!!!
Its so exhausting!! What is wrong with people!!! Argh!!! 😤16 -

Someone asked for an RSS feed for the security/privacy blog, I thought?
Well, hereby! There are three feeds:
https://much-security.nl/main.xml - a feed which is updated with both blog posts and external links relating to privacy/security I find interesting/useful.
https://much-security.nl/own.xml - a feed only containing the blogs posts themselves. For people who are only interested in that part.
https://much-security.nl/external.x... - a feed only containing external links. For people who'd like to stay updated on recent cyber security/privacy thingies.
Tracking: every time a feed is visited, a redis value for that feed get's incremented. No time, ip addresses, user agent or whatsoever is saved. Just one variable getting increased once.
New domain name will also be revealed soon (probs tomorrow, going to bed soon as I've just been sick) :D.
Oh and just a warning, the main/external feed are the only ones populated with exactly one item right now :P30 -
Boss comes to me with an idea, we use a spreadsheet to store certain sets of links for clients, sometimes with dozens of links, he wants us to be able to push a button and open all the links in the sheet. I'll admit I'm not exactly proficient in excel but said I'd look into it.
I came up with a macro which seemed to work for a while but there were a few links now and then that didn't want to open due to the way excel apparently checks the links prior to actually opening them. I told my boss that I'd look into a better solution but was slammed in office with scheduled projects.
I ended up taking time at home over the next week learning how to make this happen in Python. After a week I've got a CLI Python app which takes in an excel workbook and asks the user to select a sheet. Well employees don't like CLI so they asked for a GUI. I had never made anything with a GUI before since I'm not a software developer, anything I had previously written was written for me so it didn't need a GUI to be useful.
Spent another two weeks at home developing this thing and finally got a working solution. Now several employees are using my app as part of their daily job, saving them well over an hour of just clicking links in a spreadsheet.
Boss goes on a long rant about how he appreciates me and is thankful I was able to figure this out in my own time and save him money. So I say "If you really wanna show you appreciate me, you could approve that raise I've been asking for."
He replies, "Haha, yeah, but that's not gonna happen."

My job sends out emails with things like "You won a prize!" In the subject line with embarrassingly vague reasons to click the links in the email. If you do, the links take you to a site where they slap your wrists for clicking an unknown link and teach you about the dangers of phishing.
It's fake spam. Ironically enough, though, it's the ONLY spam I ever get. It's more annoying than real spam because it never gets blocked by the system like an actual phishing attack would...
It is driving me crazy having to delete these stupid messages every day and they're clogging up my otherwise clean inbox! So one of my clients got their wordpress site hacked and basically just redirects to scam links and well.. I looked at in the server file manager and their are like three directories with this wordpress site (not clones but the same?) one in the root, a version in a folder called old and another in temp.. with 3 separate wp databases.. DNS entries had malware redirects, the wp-content folder was writable to the public and contained a temp folder with tons of encoded malware and ip links to malicious sites.. there was encoded malware in index.php, has like 20+ plugins, oh and the theme uses a dynamic web builder so the code is basically unreadable in source and scattered.. and the redirects seem to happen randomly or at least on a new session or something. Oh.. and did I mention there are no backups? 😃2

Hello devRant!!
Just released a small little app to share links to your PC directly from your device (Linker).
It uses a Java server running on your PC so there are no middle-men. Everything is open source and on my GitHub.
It's currently in alpha. Basically:
1. Run server on your PC (no UI ATM so run in a console) - defaults: 0.0.0.0:8090
2. Add the server IP-Port in the Android app
3. Share a link from any app through linker
4. Magic 😎
Below are the links if anyone likes the idea and wants to try it out (UI is crap I know! - I had very little time to work on it)

I hate Twitter so much right now! I was trying to embed a timeline into my new website and it kept only showing me a link. ***ILLEGAL***
so its IPL(cricket) season in india, there is a OTT service called hotstar (its like netflix of india), the cricket streams exclusively on hotstar..
so a quick google search reveals literally thousands of emails & passwords, found a pastebin containing 500 emails&passwords ...but those are leaked last year most of passwords are changed & many of them enabled 2FA.. after looking through them we can find some passwords are similar to their emails , some contains birth year like 1975,1997 etc, some passwords end with 123 ..so after trying a few different versions of the passwords like
1) password123 -> password@123, password1234
2) passwordyear -> password@year
2) for passwords similar to emails, we can add 123 ,1234, @ etc
created a quick python script for sending login requests
so after like 30-40 mins of work, i have 7 working accounts
*for those who have basic idea of security practices you can skip this part
lessons learnt
1) enable 2FA
2) use strong passwords, if you change your password , new password should be very different from the old one
there are several thousands of leaked plaintext passwords for services like netflix, spotify, hulu etc, are easily available using simple google search,
after looking through & analysing thousands of them you can find many common passwords , common patterns
they may not be as obvious as password ,password123 but they are easily guessable.
mainly this is because these type of entertainment services are used by the average joe, they dont care about strong passwords, 2FA etc6 -

Unfortunately I weren't available for the interviews, so they chose a dev without me.
All his code is messy, over complicated and uses symfony framework for _everything_
He can't do shit outside of it.
He was tasked to find and replace some links in a few hundred excel documents, he spent ages trying to parse the xlsx documents and the replace the links and write to the document. Spent all day on it, with no results. Even though I often asked him how he was getting on, he said all was fine.
End of day, I get a tad furious, whip out my terminal and do the whole task in 10 minutes with basic bash4 -
Created a github open source project for voice recognition for react native Android.
Needed help developing some features and did my research with links to some articles.
Then some guy that showed interest in the specific issue just copied my repo and launched his own npm package with the new features.
Just threw my code in the garbage and just felt so irritated. I did all the research and shared the research links and he just duped me and left me to rot. No credit given.
Fuck that guy. This is not open source.
Rant over3 -
@dfox feature request, as part of the menu links in a rant, if you could add open in web version.
Why?
Sometimes links aren't clickable on my devrant version (using latest Android version am on Lollipop 😧)
Sometimes really large images don't load
So I usually copy link then paste in my browser6 -
So I was messing with mitmproxy in my phone and for some reason all Google services are blocked on it.
Apps hang when I suppose they're requesting to Google api, though chrome works for some reason.
I just realised Google even tracks the links you share with your contacts via chrome's address bar.
I'm thinking of going no-Google, any rom recommendations?
Thanks4 -
The last days I'm going totally insane for parallax designs. Have you tried them by yourself? Have some links?5
-
Why does everyone screenshot a Tweet, instead of using a perfectly good app 'Tweet2Pic' being available on Play Store.
P.S: I am the dev, shamelessly promoting my app. I am not sure if I can share links here 😅3 -
Our company does internal projects. I send emails to owners with all the links for a sales funnel. 2 weeks go by, no feedback, we launch, and then I get changes.
Sometimes months will go by and one guy will notice something on a page and be like 'how longs this been there?'
Months... Did you read the email?
Always the same guy.4 -
Those fcking newsletter unregister links which requires you to log in!
Gaaaaaaah! Following the path of least resistance, it’s easier to just keep deleting the emails 😂2 -
Dear @devRant, when a rant contains a link and I click it, it doesn't open in a new tab so when that happens, I have to click back on the browser which is not fun.
Can you please open the links in a blank tab.
Thank you :-*11 -
I hate this so much! I clicked the link because I wanted to see what was on the other side! I know I'm leaving YouTube, and if you want me to stay so that I spend more time on your shitty platform, just make it target="_blank".3
-
One of my classmates made a simple program using the code editor in word or excel, it was a app that opens movie previews, he used separate BAT files to open links...

that feel when the mothfacka uses around twenty different fonts, and not be able to even name them, and don't get me started on the arbitrary resizing of links, and the seemingly random positioning of round shaped elements2

I finally get the go ahead to push an update to a client site into production. Client then sends out marketing email about changes later that afternoon. The next day the client decides they are not ready to start fulfilling orders from one of the new products I added. Now I have to rush a change to remove the product links from the site.2

If I decrypt the message correctly is says in German: "update of your credit rating. All infos: {link}"7 -
REST apis. More than you think it is.
Just because you can access a resource by a uri, doesn't mean you have a good api.
Hypermedia that shit and let websites reuse your links from api responses, then we are getting somewhere.
Also, Fucking api versioning.. Learned the hard way that /v1/ doesn't mean Shit in most cases -
WHY IS IT SO FUCKING HARD TO DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE FROM MEGACORPS??
Yes, am looking at you EMC, Oracle and IBM. Either they have tons of portals-e-delivery-shittorama or their softwares suddenly disappear for n amount of time without notice. Mix this up with broken links or CONSTANTLY REBRANDING YOUR SHITTY PRODUCTS SO YOU NEED TO HIRE A PERSONAL ASSISTANT THAT ONLY WORKS WITH TRACKING THESE PORTALS TO HELL
Also, your websites are slow as shit.
Thank you.1 -

Little OT but I'm about to submit my phd thesis for print and electronic publishing. Publisher scaled the A4 version to A5 but lost all links that were in the document (LaTeX & hyperref).
Tried to solve the problem by myself using Ghostscript but got lost at CropBox, MediaBox, TrimBox and page size. One day is already lost.1 -
You'll probably know that Google removed the direct image link in Image Search...
Is there a Chrome extension which brings that button back?
Should be easy to do because Google now embeds the original image on the search results page.4 -

Is there something you find genuinely cool and would recommend ? Some webpage, program, OS, library or anything ?
I mean hey. There are SO MANY reaaaally cool things I didn't know until last few months.. Things I'd be so grateful for if I knew them earlier. I'll list some of them and I just know you have few of yours too. Feel free to educate the rest!
Processing - Program so fun to code in + CodingTrain(YTB channel)
Microcorruption.com - so freaking awesome if you wanna learn hacking / assembly (not x86 necessarily)
LiveOverflow - cool hacking channel
Radare - cool cmd Linux disassembler
vim-adventures.com - LEARN VIM (not just how to quit it) LITERALLY by playing a game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
slashdot - stay updated , like really
"BEST-WEBSITES-A-PROGRAMMER-SHOULD-VISIT" - GUYS THIS! Sorry for caps but search this on GitHub and you will fucking die of happiness of how freaking useful links there are and no bullshit to dig through , just pure awesomeness. REALLY
HandBrake - Top media converter without bullshit and bloat stuff in it
Calibre - Best eBook management software capable of literally everything ebooks related. Kindle is a bloated joke compared to this
QubesOS - You know you can have every OS running at once - you have a Linux but are playing win games. Yup. It's there. Free
Computerphile - You all know it, it's just for completeness
Khan Academy - Same
VulnHub - download vulnerable VMs and hack them, or learn by reading writeup on how to do it!
Valgrind - MUST HAVE for C/C++ programmers
Computer Science crash course videos
That's all I can think of from top of my head but hey, there's more to it so definitely add your 2 cents!
Last thing, if nothing, just check the websites on GitHub, that's lifechanger
Looking forward to see some cool links & recommendations!2 -
Damn...! Can't find perfect wallpaper....spent like 20min.
Can someone give me cool and awesome wallpaper or some links? . (I prefer black or blue patterns, design, anything).10 -
When you have to use Google to find the page one of Microsoft's many broken links tried to send you too...
This, Microsoft, is one of the many reasons I still use Google rather than Bing. Which by three way makes me think of Chandler Bing from friends, maybe that's the point? An airheaded product named after a goofy sitcom star. -
Is it just me or dont links in Devrant work¿ and since it gets cutoff I cant look for that link myself.5

Quick tip:
When an answer in SO has more upvotes than the question, has so many comments, and has so many explanation, so many code, and so many links, IT HAS A HIGH POSSIBILITY THAT IT IS A TROLL.
God damn i hate when programmers don't have any humor, and leave a comment saying
TROLL. PLEASE STOP THIS. FUCK
Good thing, devRant is full of people who HAS humor. Thank goodness.

Wrote a REALLY bad, simple java method to generate the repetitive parts of c# classes
Now I’m curious about good code generation methods. How I probably should’ve done this
Think I could get some advice and links on how to start learning to write simple code generators?9 -
Spend several months designing an alternative approach to string matching/parsing not based on parser combination or Regex. Benchmark and profile the ever living hell out of it. Find out the performance is highly competitive with FParsec and far easier on memory than either approach. Discover FParsec responds very badly when failing. Document all of this, do a presentation on the design. Upload video of presentation with links to it on a few sites. Presentation gets downvoted, and receive hatemail. Yay.18

I started an e2e encrypted Dropbox clone, meaning file names and contents get encrypted client side prior to uploading. It also has a fairly advanced system for sharing links to files etc. But I got stuck at PDF previews which can't be generated on the server cause the file can't be decrypted there and I never finished it.2

Not a single year passes that the problem of python2 vs python3, as a dependency, doesn’t bite me in the ass. Node modules frequently fail to build, awscli suddenly can’t find the python it needs because homebrew apparently hard-links to python3 in Cellar... Seriously, W T F?! Fuck you python!!!! You fucking assholes!!! Fuck you and go fucking die!!

C++ is the worst and most frustrating piece of shit language out there, and you cannot tell me otherwise. It's even worse that python. All starting from the shitty Syntax ending with the endless slew of links, memory management and leaks, header files whose include directory is missing and all that bullshit. C++ is the worst

In a review meeting with a client, someone asks the PM to Google something while she's presenting. Her steps:
1. Go to the company intranet home page
2. Click on "useful links" in the navbar
3. Click on "Yahoo" on the list
4. Type "Google" in the Yahoo search
5. Search for the term.

I have created a chrome extension to copy all tab links
And other window tab links as well. But when I was about to upload to chrome. It said, we don't give support to windows /mac / Linux . So the extension will be given support only for chrome os users.
I uploaded it.
So chrome users. Please take a look at it.
Extension name: JUST COPY.
please share the extension link with me!

Company: We want it done using Webflow.
Me: -_- hmm fine.6 -
Can you drop some playlist links (Spotify, YouTube, Apple music, doesn't matter where it's from) for the following genres:

Lo fi

Currently fuming at the sight of a store bought WordPress template that has social links that go nowhere, gibberish under CTA's and broken links galore.
I have contacted the poor bastard that has this website made and the soon to be poor bastard that made it.
Take some pride in your work, it's honestly insulting to be in the same industry as people like this!1 -
TYPO3: You can use this hook to modify all links generated on the website. Well, all links except those few over there, which for some reason use a completely different class that does basically the same thing, and will even call your hook, but then ignore the result completely.
Me: Fuck you! I've spent almost a day trying to find the right hook, because they are all undocumented, have stupid names and every time I get close to a solution, some other part of your code decides to circumvent the hook.
Also me: After spending hours sifting through the depths of the TYPO3 core, I seriously wonder why it works at all. Spaghetti code, classes fetching properties directly instead of using the getters, loads of global variables... Wtf is wrong with that thing?
And people say WordPress is shitty code.1 -

Why are links cut short ?
Is it to save space ?
Just, I see a lot of space available and not being used..
It's annoying since you have to hover over each link to see what it is, rather than just reading them !
Am I going to have to do this to get around the issue ?

one of the most annoying things about our system at work is that we're constantly updating broken links because we're in the process of updating a lot of legacy code. there's this one service to retrieve links for a module, but half the links in the legacy code are hard-coded strings anyway, so the whole thing is just a huge maintainability disaster. anyone ever come up with any interesting solutions for managing links between modules?1

So, what are your most favorite methods of saving interesting articles about algorithms, functions or simply news so you can read them later when you have time? I find myself storing links to interesting web pages without really going back to them or remembering which link was what. I shifted to storing the links in evernote but it's still not what I'd ideally like to have...
If there are any recommended routines, apps or tools that make stored links insightful (like allowing me to add a quick description or automatically adding a sort of preview of the link), I would appreciate it!
Please note that this is primarily about saving a resource while I'm on the go or simply can't/don't want to spend too much time on the actions.15 -

npm you dank pile of shit!
After updating npm I get "Maximum call stack size exceeded" when I use npm install --no-bin-links as usual.
After searching a solution for this shit it seams like the npm devs fucked around with the --no-bin-links option, since this nasty error message vanishes if one downgrade npm.
These goddamn assholes.
Keep your filthy fingers off this option, since it is essentially for windows devs!11 -
Soooo they merged the front-end yesterday, and everything broke: links, CSS, behavior, even fucking drop downs. I can't test anything anymore since yesterday, and I wish I could go back home and work on something more useful instead of waiting for a fix that'll probably come tomorrow

Your app or metadata includes an account registration feature, which is considered an access to external mechanisms for purchases or subscriptions to be used in the app.
To resolve this issue, please remove the account registration feature and any other fully qualified links to your site that could indirectly provide access to these mechanisms, such as links to web pages for support, FAQs, product or program details, etc.

So I found about a possible freelance job I could do. I messaged the person and they asked me to show them some of my work. I went into my dusty wamp server folder to use one of my projects there as an example or w/e. It being old and all and me having not updated anything in the last 2 years, there was a lot of bugs I had to fix. So I did that. I had to change some links and whatnot. Then I tried running the site again and that was where I met the biggest hurdle. None of the user generated pages worked because I used a .htaccess file to vanity the website links (is that a word? No? Well it is now). So I went back into the folder to check the .htaccess file to see if I could fix the issue. Lo and behold the file was empty
I had lost the fucking .htaccess. Now I'm stuck and saying fuck it because I can't be arsed to go through each file and change the links mostly bc I forgot the structure of the links ontop of the other stuff I had in the htaccess file. And yeah ik I'm just being lazy but I'm really just having one of those days
So yeah that's how my day went. Just thought I'd share -
When the only thing that standing between you and finishing your app is WebRTC!
BAHHHHHHH, I don't know why, but this thing is kicking my butt. Spent like 2 weeks now trying to get it... Anyone on the community got any good links for how to use this? Because I am losing my mind here D:4 -
Sometimes I ask myself how former IT people can become "Bosses"
Boss: We need to validate all links on our site
Me:Okay, let's vrab the response codes and some variations of under construction and we should be done.
Boss: No that only tests negatives, we need to test if the website content still matches.
Me: How?
Boss: Hmm... Just test if some keywords exist.
Me: So you want me to add a bunch of keywords for +-150 links? What about the maintenance?
Boss: Well, those sites basically never change.
Me: Then why do that?
Boss: Well, for when they change.
Now I can search through 150 mostly legal stuffy pages to find usefull keywords only to get a bunch of wrong negatives because the fucking semantics have changed...
+I have to type all that shit. Primarily, I have to type.3 -

Idea for devRant:
What if, when someone responds to a comment in a rant, it "links" said comment? Like the "Reply" function on Telegram?
Yeeeeeaaaah, I know that would technically be considered copying, but Whatsapp copied it and no one said anything, so... 😒
I think it would make things a lot easier when conversations in rants become more chaotic.

Small experimental demo using JS, CSS and a bit of PHP.
http://abitus.net/tests/...
The code, all mixed in a unique ~600 lines 'index.php' file, is ugly af. But I was mostly interested by the concept here, so it's really intended to be a dumb prototype.
However I think this works. The idea was to use a conceptual design solution in order to show links temporality when it is based on their popularity. More a link gets clicked, more bigger and slower it will be.
There's still a lot to improve. It could work with images or even more complex contents like articles. Just a matter of improving the UI.
Please feel free to play with it and give your opinion. What do you guys think of the concept ?1 -
so i saw this job post and i kinda liked this company's name.
went to their page, its a websites/app dev company. good for me
in the middle of screen it flashes in bold "80+ apps made, 31+websites..." along with websites and apps.
Out of curiousity tried to open a few of their app links, but guess what.. none of the apps were from that company's account!
Now it isn't wrong but their can be a few situations:
- company uploads their apps directly on client's account(plausible)
- company allows interns or maybe full time employees to launch app on their own dev profiles and still shows on company website as their own( weird but okay)
But why would they have links to open source apps under different company names? As far as i know, Companies proudly launch open sourced apps from their own account..
I think i got them xD2 -
Got an email “Welcome to Amazon Web Services” to an old GMail account I no longer use. Seems genuine with no links to shady websites or anything. Does Amazon not verify email addresses or how does that happen?
Also, the mail says I have now 12 months of free tier access, so will they start billing me instead of the random fuck who signed up with my email address?3 -
I’m learning react native frontend so can anyone please post random design specs links? I promise to show result, push code to GitHub and maybe a YouTube video of me doing the design.
Note: I’ll be designing a single page per design1 -
I was just thinking that bookmarking a rant could be a good feature for this community. 😁
I came across some rants with info I wanted to check later, but no way to save the rant anywhere. I just saved the links to a text file for now.2 -
Hey, just had a doubt. https://null-byte.wonderhowto.com/ take any website like this one (ideally any type of site with lots of links to other pages or posts). So my doubt is , is there a way to not hardcode all the links in the master page?. Or how exactly do professionals manage such sites?. I tried googling a lot but couldn't find the exact answer i was looking for. It'll be great if u can help me with this. Ik it's a noob question, but still😅8

Spent half a night figuring out, why all my links on my drupal website are located to weird subdomain after migration. Angry; at the morning I realised, that cache system completely gone weird and somehow pointed itself to completely different domain. Thanks drupal1

Wanted to remove a underline from links that was seemly coming from a default cmd css.
Even with !important it wasn't working. Why? Why wasn't it just working?
30m later i found out i selected text-underline instead of decoration. -_-'

Anyone got some good links to introduce Big-O notation? I’m getting my head around it but still feel I’m missing the basics!4

Just keep your docs with your source on GitHub. Don't make me use your shitty website and don't subject me to your broken links and constant redirects. I fucking hate this shit so much just give me the raw documentation. Thats all I asked for.
And get rid of that HUGE example column that takes up half my display. -
The best page for funny dev related GIFs is http://thecodinglove.com, btw...
After devRant of course 😜 -

The worst documentation has to be Veritas Backup Exec. The company bought it from Symantec, and now it's a very awkward mesh of 404'd links, ancient articles and recently made articles.1

(please tell me what I should do to improve!)
So I got some info from devs around the community of DR and I did what they said! I have done a lot to it!
I added an @user system, the feed detects links (I'm about to make that cleaner), and it also detects hashtags in the posts as well but I'm thinking about just adding a hashtag bar in the post menu.2 -
