The hardest part of being a programmer wasn't the education, the self-teaching, the sleepless nights or the hours of agony trying to fix a bug that would break a program I'd spend weeks working on.
It's the realization that my family, friends, coworkers...nobody understands at all what I do. They don't know of my failures or my triumphs. I can't talk about it with them and it's becoming more apparent to them that it's taking up more of my life. And in a way it feels like a part of myself has just become, well, alien.
Best way I can describe it is, it's like the "Tears in the Rain" scene from Blade Runner.
I'm stuck, I think. I know I've been shutting out people from my life more and more as I don't want to "deal" with people's issues, but I don't think it's been good. I'm can verify that I'm depressed beyond my normal levels.
It's time for me to make an appointment with a therapist.
Remember that you are loved here, and appreciated. Don't let anyone tell you different.
Client A: "so we using cloud-based server? is it safe? will raining cause data leak? you know rain water is from cloud? how you guys manage to control it???"
I'm sure we've all seen a rain binary cloud picture like this. But have you seen one that fits your mood? 🤔🤔21
Not only in my work, but in my life.
My biggest inspiration is the popcorn seller that patiently stays outside the subway exit, standing, every fucking day, from 4-5pm until 0-2am.
He stays until after the subway closes, and only leaves after everyone waiting for their Uber or their ride do.
In the rainiest day of the year, he was there.
In the coldest day of the year, he was there.
In the worst crisis of our country in the last decades, the region became temporarily infested by bandits and beggars. Sometimes I had to work overtime until 11:30pm and I had to be very cautious with all the robbers in the empty dark street. But guess who was there, sometimes calmly saying "get out, go work" to the bad elements bothering him?
I find it reallybfunny and refreshing when everyone is inside waiting for the rain to settle down, while he is standing in the middle of it. Or when I'm coming home really late, and he is still out there freezing cold.
There is no excuse for not doing your best. Life sucks sometimes, but there are no excuses. Just work hard, and laugh at the bad times.
Every time I saw him there, I thought "my day was hard, but I could've worked even harder". At the same time he made me feel better for having a better job, he inspired me not to bitch about any little things.
Then you might ask: "isn't he dumb to stay until 2am even though he is probably not getting any costumers after 11pm?" or "how can someone so unsuccessful be so inspiring?"
Well, I don't know. He just is.
Do almighty, genious people like Steve Jobs inspire me at work? Of course. More than this man? Certainly not.8
Do any of you guys or gals sit outside and code?
Since 2009 this has been my primary work place (even in the cold and rain), I go to the office for mostly non-coding work and have a pc inside for serious sessions but I'd say 80% of my heads down dev time is spent sitting here. A little quirk is when people call or Skype me they'll immediately say "I can hear birds in the background, where are you??".
Anyway, I'm moving soon and thought I should share while I still can ☺️21
Hey you guys working on cloud technologies..
Can you guys... like .... turn off the 'Rain', in my location, for a while. ?
I wanna get home :\5
I was in second year of university, and one of my teachers had a company, so he hired me.
The project was for our Lebanese army, the department where they monitor news.
What's required was to create a desktop application that records a UDP stream carrying over a 100 tv channels. And at the same time display them in a grid on the main screen, where the user can select which channels to watch, also which one to hear + fullscreen capability + scheduling a recording + being able to reverse through this live feed
I had little knowledge in multimedia streaming and multiplexing (the art of cramming multiple videos in one stream). So I had to read a lot, and learn how that works, in order to write a decoder, a recorder, and the application. Also the stream itself had issues, the audio would break up, some channels had translations, weird encodings, etc... Plus the pc they were running all of these on was very bad. Multimedia encoding and decoding is really hard on a cpu, so I had to work around that...
After a few weeks I pulled it off, and my boss was happy as fuck, since 2 people before me have tried and failed miserably. But the captain I was developing this for was a pain in the ass. Requirement changes started pouring in like rain + they had technical issues with their signal, which affected the quality of the stream beyond what software can fix.
Fast forward, my boss eventually got fed up with the bs, and as always, decided to blame it on me. I wasn't paid 2 months, and he worked towards making me fail university, which I didn't cause I'm a lot smarter than 90% of those motherfuckers. But he did lay a lot of obstacles since he had high reach in there.
To this day, after 6 years, I still think this was my craziest project. And although that guy was an asshole. I'm pretty sure it's that project that made me who I am today.13
You know you messed Git hard when your commit graph started to look like November Rain on Guitar Hero.5
The moment I saw a bird laying on the balcony, unresponsive, I dropped everything.
The balcony has glass walls, which the bird hit pretty hard against. It (I don't know the gender) was disoriented, shaking, and totally out of it.
It was almost night, and I can feel a few drops of rain, a sign of, well, more rain.
So I took it in, did some research, left it inside a quiet dark box with a heating mat on the bottom. It slowly calmed down. We slept overnight, listening to the rain outside, thinking about what would've happened if the bird hit, let's say, somewhere else.
It would've not have any help, or care whatsoever. It would die slowly, having a concussion and oh my gosh my efforts doesn't matter anyway this is the way of life there are bird striking windows everyday and I can't help it Holy noodles I should remove windows from every computer in the house...
I was like this the entire night.
The next morning I discovered that the bird was awake, but something was wrong. The bird was still disoriented. Then I discovered something. Gosh, how did I miss it?
The left eye was completely swollen, which had caused the imbalanced walk, which means that it could not fly.
(*Rapidly typing on phone*) come on where is the nearest wildlife rehabilitation centre....
Initially I thought that the bird just needed to recover, I was wrong. It needs professional help ASAP.
To the SUV! (https://myinstants.com/instant/...)
We went to the other corner of the town. Seriously, we were at the southeast part of town, and we have to drive to the northwest.
It took 15 minutes, but we finally got there. I dropped it off and got home. I will never see that bird again in my entire life.
I don't know what will happen to it.
Good luck out there, little bird.
So... That was my weekend. Here comes Monday...8
Headphones ON ears means DON'T disturb unless it's important.
Talking about the chance of rain is not f*ing important. Especially when it's the 10th effin time I'm interrupted by nonsense officetalk in one hour!6
Spent 4 hours today working on a monitor that wasn't working. someone had put by their garbage can in the rain. I dried it out for about 2 weeks before plugging it in. It turned on but when I plugged in the DVI, it did nothing.
Today, I pulled the ENTIRE thing apart because either I could find out what was wrong, or all is lost anyways. Who knows what the rain could do to it?
With no luck, I did a quick search online about the model and found that this one just had some defective firmware (Who knew monitors had filmware??) I installed it, ran it, it took about 20 seconds and it worked!
Lesson learned once again: google is your friend10
It's raining. I love it.
It's foggy. I love it.
But I live in a desert and nobody here seems to know how to handle the rain, let alone the fog. (It isn't hard, people!) Last night during my ~30 min drive home from work, five separate accidents/collisions happened just a little ways behind me because it was raining. Now it's foggy, too.
I have to go to work.
When you get a client from real MOTHERFUCKING hell.
You just really FUCKING want to say this:
Scorched earth MOTHERFUCKER. I will massacre you. Now SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET ME DO MY JOB.
First, take a big step back and literally, FUCK YOUR OWN FACE.
I will rain down an ungodly FUCKING firestorm upon you.
You're gonna have to call the FUCKING United Nations and get a FUCKING BINDING RESOLUTION to keep me from FUCKING destroying you.
I am talking SCORCHED EARTH MOTHERFUCKER.
I will MASSACRE you.
I WILL FUCK YOU UP!
But for your own sake you keep it at this:
Yes sir/ma'am :).7
I'm so grateful DevOps is now a thing. I remember getting a phone call from a client at 2am on a Friday because their site was down and having to ssh in from a Nokia with the world's tiniest keyboard to reboot the server.
Of course that particular server only exposed port 22 on it's local network, so I had to first ssh into another server which did have its ssh port open to external connections.
Trying to remember two sets of credentials and type them in on a tiny keyboard, while so drunk you were seeing double, standing outside in the rain as it was the only place you got signal. Yeah…I'm so grateful DevOps is now a thing7
Simplicity is a prerequisite for reliability.
I put those words on the wall in giant vinyl letters, and I point to them every time someone asks me "can you add a frontend button which checks this external API and stores the correlation between the amount of rain and the sales numbers of purple buttplugs inside the user profiles?"
People always ask for one more column in a table, one more paragraph under an image — they never ask for replacement or removal of items.
So I force them. Want a feature? Fine, if you point at something of equal or greater complexity to delete.2
My family hosts an 100 mile (160km) run once every year for ultra-runners. 11 hours in the first runner has done 105 km. And I'm sitting at this checkpoint logging their times and working on a project. But rain started pouring down and this not so waterproof tent has just become the worst developing workplace I have ever been in because the umbrella ain't big enough for me and the laptop. So I'm soaked and won't be relieved for another 8 hours. The things you do for family.8
This memory came up as I was commenting on another rant, and thought it was worthy of a better retelling.
So about a year or two ago, I had just gotten a Software Defined Radio, and was tinkering with it and looking around for cool stuff I could do with it. After stalking planes for a while (caught a 747 over my area 😎) I saw this program that decoded satellite images of earth, coming from the NOAA satellites. I thought this was amazing.
So I waited until one was over my area and let the software do its magic. The image was not great, since I had this set up on the first floor and there was a lot of material between me and the satellite.
So I came to the brilliant conclusion that I'd leave the program on automatic more (it will start sampling when the satellite is near) on my terrace, which should yield better results, right?
Perhaps. Who knows. Anyways, couple hours pass and we are running late to a family dinner. So we book it. Family dinner was great, good food and all, and was having fun, so never thought about my poor laptop, sitting alone in the night.
But then, when I was walking home in the rain... It hit me. I started running. I couldn't believe what I had done. Fast forward five minutes, and I'm out of breath, but home. I run upstairs, and see the laptop just sitting there, lid open, no lights on, and of course soaked right through.
I couldn't believe it. My only piece of tech at the time, and my only avenue for programming, gone. And I was 15, so I wasn't getting another one any time soon. Took it inside and drained the water out of it, and just left it there lying on its side.
Next day it worked just fine 🤣 the battery on my laptop only lasted max one hour, so by sheer luck it had lost power before the rain came. That is the one time I have to thank that battery for being such utter trash.7
"For those that don't know: Alpine Linux is a security-oriented, lightweight Linux distribution based on musl libc and busy box. The latest version of Alpine Linux v3.3 weighs in at a whopping 5MB. Not bad for a full blown Linux OS considering 5MB is same size as the Windows Start button."
That last sentence made me laugh so badly :D5
Goes to first job interview. Great interview but, can you send some code?
Sends requested js, css html files.
Great code, we want to speak to you again!
Goes to second interview, waits 15m, meets the sales department. Sales? Wtf?
Great interview but, can you send more code?
We need some native JS to really make sure you can write code.
You could've emailed this request before the interview b*tch. That way id save time hurrying in rain and traffic jams!4
It's raining in Chennai, India.
Flooding in quite a few areas.
The areas hit bad are where the IT companies have set up shop. More rain is expected .
If you know guys from here please check and see if they're OK. It was almost impossible to get back home from work for many people last night.
Uber was charging 600% more for a ride.
Hope you guys from Chennai are safe.8
I decide to come by scooter and the weather goes crazy!
Weather predictions are "Heavy rain to very heavy rain" for the next few hours!
Fortunately, I have a work-all-night-take-next-day-off policy (which my manager frowns upon but is cool with!)
So, code-mode ON! 😎5
Warning : (gross && !dev) == true
Fuck my nose, fuck the unbearably hot weather, and fuck toilet paper industry (above all and everything).
I was taking a dump, sweat dripping from my forehead under these 32°C (90°F) (we Belgians use to live in the rain, that's our natural habitat). When without any warning, my weak and sensitive nose decided to bleed by itself (again). First reflex: take a deep nasal breath to prevent blood from streaming like a depressed single on Pornhub before I can grab a tissue. Great idea! I fucking love having a deep breath of my own shit, especially when it's so hot that every smell is twice as strong as usual! Then, when grabbing some toilet paper to dig it far up my nose, I just put blood everywhere, anyway. So I'm here, pants down, dirty ass, trying to clean the blood before it dries, having to watch for my tissue to not become too soaked.
Done. I can now start to wipe my ass. I use 3 papers, and I can't go on, because my poor anus cannot tell the difference between toilet paper and sandpaper. Because these dumbasses that study their product don't get that scrubbing chemicals soaked paper against sensitive mucous isn't something that people enjoy. I don't care if your paper has 2 or a gogolplex layers, I don't care if it smells like aloe vera or your Down sister's diapers, I just want my fucking shithole to not look like it just got raped by an army of angry gorillas after it has been cleaned.
Now I'm in a cold bath, because my body wouldn't stop sweating, my nose wouldn't stop bleeding, and I had to wash my ass with water and soap and not with lame stinky paper (it got done in the shower, not in my bath of course). And before I could even begin to fill the bathtub, I had to blow my nose to get rid of the coagulated slugs of blood filling it. Told you it was gross.
And my friends ask why I don't shit more than once a week. Well, because that's the time my anus takes to stop bleeding and hurting after I use it, as simple as that.7
Back in my sysadmin days we had an IT zoo to look after. And I mean it... Linux side was allright, but unix.... Most unices were no longer supported. Some of their vendors' companies were already long gone.
There was a distant corner in our estate known to like 2 people only, both have left the company long ago. And one server in that corner went down. It took 2 days to find any info about the device. And connecting to it looked like:
1 ssh to a jumpbox #1
2 ssh to a jumpbox #2
3 ssh to a dmz jumpbox
4 ssh to an aix workload
5 fire up a vnc server
6 open up a vnc client on my workstation, connect to than vnc server [forgot to mention, all ssh connections had to forward a vnc port to my pc]
7 in vnc viewer, open up a terminal
8 ssh to hp-uxes' jumpbox
9 ssh to the problematic hp-ux
Every time I read "JSON" I get Heavy Rain in my head.
"Jason! Ja-son! Jason!"
Sat on the street in the rain doing server maintenance over VPN, using WiFi leeched from the Albert Heijn (supermarket).6
Okay dutchies and other people who'd like to join.
devRant meeting in The Hague. As far as I can see, Saturday is a good option for many people and for the people who'd like to do a weekend, they can find some sleeping accommodation in The Hague.
I'm personally more than willing to do two days!
Anyone any ideas for a good meeting place? Also one in case it'll rain which is quite likely in the Netherlands.
Please comment your ideas on this information!40
So, California, land of no rain whatsoever.
Until today, where it actually rained!
Also today, a weather applet for tmux started misbehaving. Suspicious.
Coincidence, I think not! Sure enough, stopping that applet from running fixed everything. Turns out, the raining icon breaks the terminal, for some strange reason.
And why had this not been discovered earlier? This had been the first time it had rained for at least 8 months, and I added this only 4 months ago. Thus, it had never had its time to shine.
Yay for strange encoding!
Anyway, I now have a new excuse; blame bad code on global warming.3
I think my productivity at work seriously went up when I discovered this site with custom noise generators. Blocks out my coworkers, and I can pretend it's raining all the time. Perfect for coding!
Adventures Of The New COO
So when that new COO joined our company ( read my previous rant to know that story ) he brought a graphic designer with him
as a designer he's ok, more of a old school package designer type, but as a person one of the most annoying one I've ever met, always want to be included with our conversations, talk about rain and stuff
so few days ago, i was working on a website, headphones plugged in, music playing, he comes near my seat
Designer: Are you busy ?
Me: yeah, I've this website to finish
Designer: So i have this idea for an app
Me: *taking off headphones while thinking doesn't this dumbass know the meaning of busy*
Designer: what if we create an app for super markets, like this isle has this stuff, that isle has soap or something and how it'll be easy to find what you want to buy and keeps going on and on for about 5 minutes
Me: *making my voice as polite and sarcastic as possible*
It wouldn't work, every market has a different layout even among same market chain it's different
Me: have you ever been to a super market, they have a board saying what the isle is above the isle, all you have to do is just look up
Designer: hmm yeah i guess
everyone wants to make apps and make money, but doesn't have the fucking brain capacity to think about the idea for a bit and do some research, instead they come and waste our time2
Well, the coolest thing that's public?
Non-public: I also once had a Raspberry Pi 2 placed on top of a bus station with a powerbank (and a little rain protecting covers) and a camera module, with a little piece of image analysing software that would notify me when my bus is coming.
This worked via Google Cloud Messaging. Initially I wanted to update that to Firebase Cloud Messaging, but I decided that I didn't need that system anymore and decided to give the Raspberry Pi 2 to a friend instead.17
Hey guys and girls ^~^
I hope this question is ok as it's not entirely dev related.
I'm planning on building a custom cattracking device that i can attach to a cat harness. It obviously has to be very small and light. This is why i had the pi zero in mind.
I want to track my cat via Gps and send location via gsm (and use a trigger if he connects to my wifi to set off an alarm so i can let him in).
My experience with pi's is limited but i have some with arduinos.
Besides that i would need a case which keeps the pi save from dust, humidity and maybe rain but won't interfere too much with the gsm signal.
First: is this even possible?
If yes, what would you recommend?
Are there better ways to do this?
Thanks to all in advance35
So Monsoons hit the town and this is saddening for me.
I FUCKING HATE MONSOONS WITH BURNING PASSION FROM THE CORE OF MY SOUL.
Cloudy weather is nice and rains are much needed for the survival on this big blue ball, but I never loved this season.
The clouds hide the sun and that reduces the Vitamin D generation in our body.
The weather triggers me emotionally, because I do not have a SO to spend those lovey dovey moments with.
As lack of Vit D is closely linked to depression (biologically), so along with those emotional triggers my seasonal depression creeps in.
I FUCKING HATE DEPRESSION.
What more could go wrong? Well the drizzling rain makes everything dirty and muddy. Unless it's a heavy rain, which
washes everything off, the filth outside is just annoying.
You want more? The traffic increases and everybody is stuck for hours getting their dicks and cunts wet just because a dumbass decided to speed a bit and slipped all the way jamming the road from every direction.
The germs and bacterias shoot up and everyone, literally every motherfucker, falls ill with contagious disease and keeps sneezing their cum without covering their filthy mouth. A season for doctors to mint money.
Moreover, all the open air gigs and events get cancelled. You cannot even go out for a jog or breathe fresh air without soaking your balls with mud and water.
Buildings, lifts, public transport, hospitals everything is wet and unhygienic.
So yeah, FUCK MONSOONS.9
Was just recalling one of the worst calls I ever got in IT...
Many years ago we had a single rack for all of our servers, network and storage (pre virtualization too!).
We had a new security system installed in the building and the facilities manager let the guy into the server room to run all the sensor cables in because that is where they wanted their panel... the guy was too lazy to get up on the roof and in the attic repeatedly so after he checked it out he went around every where and drilled a hole straight up where he wanted the sensor wire to go... well the server room was not under an attic space... when he found he had drilled through to the out side... HE FILLED IT WITH EXPANDING FOAM.... the membrane on the roof was damaged... that night it rained... I got a call at 4 am that systems were acting funky and I went in... when I opened the door it was literally raining through the corners of the drop ceiling onto the rack... An excellent DR plan saved our asses but the situation cost the vendor's insurance company $30k in dead equipment and another $10k in emergency labor. Good thing for him we had so little equipment in that room back in.
Moral of the story... always have a good DR plan... you never know when it will rain in the server room.... :)4
I will create a mobile app that will Stop Rain whenever
It enters my radius..
And yes it will use CLOUD services.
Who the fuck uses http code 200 for a failure. Seriously have you ever heard something about a need to parse the shit you're returning...
Now I don't know whether it's me who's wrong, but man there are more than 80 different codes defined so there really should be something for you, don't you think?
And don't give me shit like "well the request worked so we return 200 it's only that the request wasn't correct". What for a fucking peace of something are you... Those codes are for that exact reason.
Anyways I'm going to parse the shit with string compare and afterwards kill myself out of shame. Whish me luck...6
I wanna make you feel what you have brought into my house!!
I was working with security cameras once in a home automation project. One of those camera particularly stand out by offering a cgi without password request to view and change the current passwort and username.
Seriously wtf is wrong with you? I mean this thing automatically connects to an internet service offering everyone to connect to it with that passwort and username. And I know some of you might say "hey chill the cgi is only available on the wifi" - dammit no. Security is a lifestyle do it complete or get the fuck out. God knows what other mistakes there might be hidden in that thing screaming out to everyone to watch me taking a shit.
But that's not the end of it. My company arranged a call to the technical support of that camera so that I can explain the problem and a patch gets released. Those guys didn't give a shit about it and were even laughing at me. Fuck you!
So whoever is responsible - I will find you - and you will never see me coming.4
Just wanted to share a really cool sounding song with everyone. I’m sitting in my car in the rain and just playing this loud as fuck and it’s an amazing experience.
Artist: “Carbon Based Lifeforms”
"Suggest an AV/AM product, Avast refuses to install."
I do malware research as a hobby and have for a while, so I can generally spot when something's up before I even run a program. If i'm unsure about it (or know something's up and wanna see its effects for S&Gs) I throw it into one of a variety of VMs, each with a prepped, clean, standardized "testing" state.
I see no point to AV/AM products, especially as they annoy me more than anything since they can't be told not to reach into and protect VMs (thereby dirtying up my VM state, my research, crashing the VM hypervisor and generally being *really* annoying) and they like to erase samples from a *read-only, MOUNTED* VHDX.
However, normal people need them, so I usually suggest this list:
• MBAM is good and has a (relatively) low memory footprint, but doesn't have free realtime protection.
• Avast is very good as it picks up a lot, but it eats a FUCKTON of resources. It also *really* likes to crash VM hypervisors if it sees anything odd in them.
• AVG is garbage. Kill it with fire.
• Using Windows Defender is like trying to block the rain with an umbrella made of 1-ply toilet paper.
• herdProtect is amazing as it's basically a VirusTotal client but it's web-based and not currently available to be downloaded. (Existing copies still work!)
• Kaspersky. Yes, it spied on US gov't workers. No, they don't care about anyone BUT US gov't workers. Yes, it's pretty good.
• BitDefender: *sees steam game* "Is this ransomware?"
hope this helps17
I was talking to a CS student here at my University the other day. We were discussing our high school careers. He had the opportunity to take 6 different CS classes, but he cheated his way through most of the classes.
Meanwhile, I had the opportunity to take a huge total of 0 CS classes. But boy did I desire the ability to take CS classes.
It's kind of sad that students who desire to learn get left out in the rain, while people who can take classes just cheat their way through the courses.2
Dear internet providers,
Please make sure that everyone can setup routers so I don't have to stand in tons of rain waiting on somebody to open me his door because I have to stick the ******** LAN cable in the wall, which he really can't do him self....
My favorite quote from an article (jokingly) poking fun at React:
"I mentioned to a junior developer that his return function was getting a little unsightly with the lengthy JSX that he’d put in his render function. He told me, “Oh it’s cool. I’ll break it out into several functions that return JSX.”
I pushed him into a volcano.
The gods smiled upon us and we had rain."1
Starting something called Project R.A.I.N.
In simpler terms... a raspberry pi NAS lol. Just wanted a cool name4
Going out to London for my second week of vacation. Hope it doesn't rain much and your beer is as good as you claim it to be. 😝10
This post is now dedicated for a comment debate with the topic "Is Visual Studio Code an IDE?"
I 'll see myself out. Make the comments rain8
That's it, I'm done. I'm SO. FUCKING. DONE. Whoever created such a badly monkey ass coded shit and named it "Drupal" should have been aborted with a fucking hanger.
No one was here today because they were all at a Drupal Con that I never heard of. Glad I didn't. So they told me "yeah there are one year bug to fix, if you could do them all in a one work day that'd be greaaaaat". FUCK. YOU.
This shit is slowly sucking my passion away, and while I could spend 15 hours to code per day a few months ago, now I'm stuck to debugging shit that should have work without a Drupal environment. Tomorrow I'm going to see my manager and tell him to get me the fuck out of this and make me do something that would make me enjoy living again. I can't believe I'm getting trouble for this kind of low shit stuff, really.
And it started to rain. Fuck.3
I have upvoted good questions, helpful comments and useful answers on SO for a long time now, although I don’t have enough reputation (15 needed to count upvotes).
Once I reach this 15 points get ready for a big rain of upvotes 😁2
iiiii fffffuckingg hate articles that just explain something

are the ssame people i almost care the MOST?
i cross hundreds and thousands of miles to visit a person, invest hours of my time to do that
i do that....
and they wouldnt even step 1 foot in front to see me....
what kind of life is this
feel like cryin rn
i dont understand what one must do
what is the point
all i want is to be happy
that is it
but being happy is.... i wanted to say the hardest part of life but now my voice told me being happy is a state of mind
myself answered me that being happy ? is a state of mind?
so that means if i want to be happy even if everything around me is falling apart
in my mind i can create a psychological world that would make me.... happy ....?
i dont understand what did myself tell me
why do i care so much if im lonely
u know my friend from college we go to same computer science college
hes a very smart man but a fake FUCKING friend, plastic as fuck
he reads philosophy booms and told me
"when a man is lonely for long enough, he will slowly start to fall apart"
that is me...... that is ...truth......
he quoted a philosopher from some book
he also said a quote he read about the meaning of life
"this life is endless pain and the only purpose of life is to reduce this pain as much as possible so we can be happy"
what the fck that is incredibly depressing
what the fuck im actually crying rn
i feel stabbed in the back and left behind and cheated on, all of those happened and some of them are happening right now
dont know what to think about the reasons
all of this causes me such huge anger and depression and that is whT keeps me going
going by working harder than i am supposed to
without all this hurt there would be no glory
all this effort..... it better pay off at the end...... please God..... i beg you....
i have completed 50% of my life purpose, let me do the rest so i can die in peace...13
My weather report just says "delete" for friday. ("Löschen" in german)
Seems good weather app, seems good! 🤔11
Anyone else who can't focus while listening to music? I can't grasp how that's not annoying to people.
The sound of silence.
For real, the best coding flows happen then.
If there is something that I can hear and process, my train of thought behaves like a dream behaves when you wake up in the morning.
Even worse are children, humming, whistling or munching as the ONLY sound in that silence, Im scorching inside when that happens.
If I can't be somewhere silent (preferably completely), I block the distractions with binaural beats and/or sound of rain.26
First proper day of work today.
Started at 11. Listened to multiple guys shout about how much everyone made in this crap-infested cesspit of a sales job.
Got to a city I'd never been in at 2.
Walked around in the fucking rain knocking on doors till 9.
Got on the bus at 11.
I earned £20 the whole fucking day, which I'm not even going to get for a fucking month.
I'm would firebomb the office tomorrow, but I need this job. Badly :/.12
I too got my $1 unix sticker pack (thank you very much whoever posted this by the way) and thought posting a picture of them would be redundant
First thing when I brought them to work to show them or to my colleagues I stepped out of my car and they all fell to the soaking wet ground (it was pouring down at the time)
Luckily they're of very high quality and still intact 😊15
So I don't know what it is with like teachers that teach any computer/coding course.
First off my computer programming teacher is this big white hippie dude who claims he brings rain wherever he travels. Imagine some dude who claims to be part Native American but he's super white. Anyway our district uses Google Classroom, imo I think it's a great way to share assignments and what not but this man, does not get it. I have almost a failing grade due to this man not letting me edit a Google docs, so instead I make a copy locally and then turn it in. I don't think the dude checked his thing or whatever that I attached a file.
And then I have this wacko web design teacher. He like makes us use Dreamweaver in class cause it's so "much easier than coding" and like imo I don't like it too much. One day he put something on the Google drive folder for our class to copy and paste, he did something wrong and we couldn't get them so he gave us a free period and says "tomorrow I'll make CDs so you guys can copy the files directly"....?! There are so many other things you could have done sir. Like maybe a Dropbox? Another Drive folder? BUT CDS? 3 OF THR KIDS DIDNT KNOW WHAT A CD WAS AND IT WAS SO CRINGY
tl;Dr highschool computer classes are no2
For me its a good night sleep and have a strict rule not to work from home/not-working-location. It will make the window of working time more focused.2
1. It's gonna be more and more specialized - to the point where we'll equal or even outdo the medical profession. Even today, you can put 100 techs/devs into a room and not find two doing the same job - that number will rise with the advent of even more new fields, languages and frameworks.
2. As most end users enjoy ignoring all security instructions, software and hardware will be locked down. This will be the disadvantage of developers, makers and hackers equally. The importance of social engineering means the platform development will focus on protecting the users from themselves, locking out legitimate tinkerers in the process.
3. With the EU getting into the backdoor game with eTLS (only 20 years after everyone else realized it's shit), informational security will reach an all-time low as criminals exploit the vulnerabilities that the standard will certainly have.
4. While good old-fashioned police work still applies to the internet, people will accept more and more mass surveillance as the voices of reason will be silenced. Devs will probably hear more and more about implementing these or joining the resistance.
5. We'll see major leaks, both as a consequence of mass-surveillance (done incompetently and thus, insecurely) and as activist retaliation.
6. As the political correctness morons continue invading our communities and projects, productivity will drop. A small group of more assertive devs will form - not pretty or presentable, but they - we - get shit done for the rest.
7. With IT becoming more and more public, pseudo-knowledge, FUD and sales bullshit will take over and, much like we're already seeing it in the financial sector, drown out any attempt of useful education. There will be a new silver-bullet, it will be useless. Like the rest. Stick to brass (as in IDS/IPS, Firewall, AV, Education), less expensive and more effective.
8. With the internet becoming a part of the real life without most people realizing it and/or acting accordingly, security issues will have more financial damages and potentially lethal consequences. We've already seen insulin pumps being hacked remotely and pacemakers' firmware being replaced without proper authentication. This will reach other areas.
9. After marijuana is legalized, dev productivity will either plummet or skyrocket. Or be entirely unaffected. Who cares, I'll roll the next one.
10. There will be new JS frameworks. The world will turn, it will rain.1
Just reached my office.
Roads were flooded so, I pull my motorbike to other lane and drive while traffic coming from another side.
Felt like fast and furious. Now, I am smiling like Budha and my co-worker giving me strange looks, like I got enlightenment.1
CK's nike deal
Eminem's diss shit and MGK killing it with Rap Devil
Wife free from work this weekend
Made a rather large project with Pharo and Seaside to see if I dig it(i did, but it ain't replacing my other tools anytime soon, shit requires reading far too much code and digging around dark corners of the net for it)
Finished 2 projects for work and got ahead of 2 others for this week.
Shit b, this is one interesting weekend indeed.
A: Is it raining today?
B: ... Is it raining today?
C: There's no rain in the forecast.
B: There's no rain in the forecast.
Which voice is a computer?5
So there's been a lot of rain lately, and it looks like the river next to our office might flood, which means if it does then we'll have to evacuate all our workstations.
Unfortunately, 90% of our office is currently out of the state on vacation or at a conference, which leaves only 2 of us to get everyone's stuff out..4
I'm sitting in my RV and it's been raining for two days almost non-stop.
Is there anything more wonderful than rain falling on the roof of the car? I love that sound. Nightly silence and rain.
Seriously though, I love working in libraries, by the river, and I love rain (I am extremely productive in the rain)3
Today I asked Cortana on my PC
me: Will it rain today?
she: sure thing! opening the app(Will it rain today?) . . . . pop-up saying: search an app in store for this format.
It fucking sucks to be home once every week because it's raining and transport modes are affected!
I'm bored at home. I want to go to office!!!!!!!6
Has anyone here considered going off grid? Im dreaming of buying a plot somewhere in Chile and building an off grid home. Im a remote worker and plan to remain being one.
(Off grid meaning generating your own electricity, 'harvesting' rain water and growing some greens)
Im asking to get advice and opinions2
A couple weeks ago, my friend bought Risk of Rain 2 and got a free copy to gift to a friend, so he gave it to me. That game is so fucking addicting. I don't know the term for it, but it's one of those games where every round, you start with basically nothing, and you get items that buff you up, and so on. If you die, you have to start a new round. Then it just keeps going and going.
..That's it. I just wanted to recommend a really fun game to anyone who hasn't heard of it. For our Linux users, it runs in Proton and the first game has a native Linux port, so I believe the second one will have a port at some point (it's early access, so stuff is still being added).3
Dear Docker for Windows I know you exist to make devs on Windows life easier. But DEAR GOD, with all the firewall/group policy problems..you have been the pain of my existence during this short time developing on Windows.
Literally have a countdown on the time left until I get to no longer do a rain dance for my development environment to work.2
Hey guys, I've always loved and adored what programmers and developers do, so I really do need your advice on this...
After around nine years in the journalism field, I'm considering a career shift into development, for many reasons including that the journalism field seems to be going down in my country, so I started where most recommendations would tell a beginner to start, learning HTML... Now, is it a good idea for starters to change my career into this magnificent and enormous field? I know it won't be easy, but is it possible to be something in that career?6
I live in a country where Dollars are of very high value, I got a job fteelancing and made some money, after that a friend's brother approched me with some fantastic ideas (I guess he thought of them because 'Hey, he made money, I can too') like building an online game, I told him that i wasn't either a designer or a game developer and he told me that I could go and learn... Yeah like if I can learn game development in a week or be a designer in the same amount of time. When I said no he told me if I didn't want to build a porn site, I kindly rejected again and told him that I like to build tools that are useful for other people then he said that he just wants to make people spend money on internet like if money was going to rain quickly. I didn't even ask but I'm sure he wasn't going to pay me for development. I'm sure that when I see him he's going to tell me more "Fantastic ideas"2
Interesting weather we're having... is it Winter, Spring or Summer?
BTW if anyone is in NYC today... http://www.japandaynyc.org
Was planning to go and have a fun day out but forecast keeps changing and said it gonna rain... With 90 wait... 80... 60... now 50% probability....
(I live in NJ, takes me 2hrs to get there, can't drive)
Someone plz figure out how to forecast weather more accurately........😩😢😭😟😞😖😧😦7
The weather is playing a cruel game
Past nights: clear sight on the yellowish moon
Yesterday: freaking heavy rain! Until 4am.
So, many years until the next one again?1
I published my first game, Rain. Everything seems to be going well, but I don't know what to do next. I've done some self promotion on social media. Should I spend some money on advertising?
Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...7
Got 'em stickers woohoo! All the way from Philippines. Letter got wet in the rain but the stickers are in good condition. Thanks devRant!4
The mood everytime I spend hours on a stupid bug and I get frustrated but then manage to fix it... "I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW THE RAIN IS GONE..."..."IM THE KING OF THE WOOOORLD"..."WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD!!"..."BAAAAABYYY COME HERE I HAVE GOOD NEWS!!!"... I just got that mood again
The datepicker saga
So I begin work on a page where user add their details, project is late, taking ages on this page
Nearly done, just need a component to allow users to put in some date of births. Look for react components.
Avoiding that one because fuck Bootstrap.
Ah-ha, that looks good, let's give it a go.
CSS doesn't exist, oh need copy it over from npm dist. Great it applied but...
... WTF it's tiny. Thought it was a problem with my zoom. Nope found the issue in github.com and it's something to do with using REM rather than EM or something, okay someone provided a solution, rather I saw a couple of solutions, after some hacking around I got it working and pasted it in the right location and yes, it's a reasonable size now.
Only it's a bit crap because it only allows scrolling 1 month at a time. No good. Hunting through the docs reveals several options to add year and month drop downs and allow them to be scrolled. Still a bit shit as it only shows certain years, figure I'd set the start date position somewhere at the average.
Wait. The up button on the scroll doesn't even show, it's just a blank 5px button. Mouse scroll doesn't work
... Bailing on that.
Okay sod it I'll just make my own three drop down select boxes, day, month and year. Easy.
At this point I take full responsibility and cannot blame any third party. And kids, take this as a lesson to plan out your code fully and make no assumptions on the simplicity of the problem.
For some reason (of which I regretted much) I decided to abstract things so much I made an array of three objects for each drop down. Containing the information to pretty much abstract away the field it was dealing with. This sort of meta programming really screwed with my head, I have lines like the following:
But I was in too deep and had to weave my way through this kind of abstract process like an intrepid explorer chopping through a rain forest with a butter knife.
So I am using React and Redux, decided it was overkill to use Redux to control each field. Only trouble is of course when the user clicks one of the fields, it doesn't make sense in redux to have one of the three fields selected. And I wanted to show the field title as the first option. So I went against good practice and used state to keep track of the fields before they are handed off to the parent/redux. What a nightmare that was.
Possibly the most challenging part was matching my indices with moment.js to get the UI working right, it was such a meta mess when it just shouldn't have taken so stupidly long.
But, I begin to see the light at the end of this tunnel, it's slowly coming together. And when it all clicks into place I sit back and actually quite enjoy my abysmal attempt at clean and easy to read code.
Ran the generated timestamp through a converter and I get the day before, oh yeah that's great
Seems like it's dependant on the timezone??!
Nope. Deploying. Bye. I no longer care if daylight savings makes you a day younger.1
Have you ever found a infinite task? Well, I did.
So, the software that I'm working now was under responsibility of another company for development and maintenance (I'll call them X) from 2014 to last month , and the company I work for was handling only with the business part. Now we took all the development for us as well.
This software has a lot of reports , so it has a lot of templates for this reports.
When X was handling the software, they asked the client and the old project manager if they wanted the templates to have the client's products dynamic (no need to change the template when adding a new product) or hardcoded for some products they already had, they choose hardcoded because it would be faster. Butterfly effect.
Fast forward to this week, the team leader designated a task for me, It looked easy at first, just fix 2 templates, easy.
Oh boy, I was so wrong.
I fixed the first template, discovering in the process the hardcoded things, had to add the product reference in a lot of places.
So i went to the second item, a super template that they use to put together some smaller templates.
It was really weird, I couldn't find all the templates that it was supposed to use, and I didn't really know the exact problem, the only thing I knew was that it was not being generated, the reason could be the super template itself or one of the 15 smaller templates, that could happen to have sub templates.
So I called the team leader and explained to him wtf was happening, he called the senior business analyst, that called the PM, we agreed that it would be infinite because of those fucking hardcoded things, they prepared a excel sheet with this and a lot of other problems and will send this to the client, explaining that we'll need a lot of time to put this new product up and running.
Now I'm in the middle of this shit storm seeing a time of darkness in the future.
Ps: This new product was supposed to be inserted in the software since last November, when it was under X responsability, and they analyzed it and said that it would take 190 hours to be completely done, the client refused. It was the first rain drop of what would become a shit storm.
Listening to rain sound or pleasing sounds while coding helps me think straight and sets a good mood for me to complete a task.Music sets me straight.
Its a confession...
So yesterday we had a practical in our uni... It was on Assembly Language (NASM and TASM)... Its a horrible language to work on... Trust me... I hate it, infact... We all hate it at the uni... But the thing is... We need to pass the practical in order to sit for the theory, and it is really hard language.... So most of my friends brought pen drives... And some brought chits... And sadly... All of them got caught... And were marked as fail right away... But the thing is I also cheated... And I copied successfully... I didnt use any pendrive or removable media... But I used ssh to my cloud server... And since I code on vi, it was pretty easy for me to cheat in the practical... I feel bad that I cheated.... But then I feel proud as well because I used the tech of this generation to copy, and not some grandpa shit like pendrives...
Yeah... That was it... The codes did rain in the exam..
I know I am a horrible person.. But common guys.. Who am I kidding... I am proud that I didnt use any clichè methods... And was talented enough to do so without getting caught...5
Fuck you WooCommerce and fuck you shopify, also a big fuck you to every developer who thinks it's a good idea to notify other customers about what another customer just bought in real time.
Guess fucking what. I don't fucking care what uncle deadinthehead just bought. Get fucking raped in a columbian prison and die to aids infested rain..2
I lost my cool and got into a trembling furious mode yesterday. The outcome is an ugly pile of mess. After calming myself down and reflecting, this is what I end up telling myself this morning.
I let myself touched shit. When someone was throwing shit at me, I went and touch it and throw it back instead of avoiding it. I created a shit storm instead of a cleansing rain. And now not only me, everyone around me has to breath in shit air.2
As if it wasn't bad enough, that jase is killing his account - each time his weatherstation detects rain, now theres atleast 6 jase, because I think he missed out creating an account and somebody was faster than him, so which jase, is the real jase, itsjase,vstjase,jase,...?3
So anyone excited to watch out the lunar eclipse.
I am ready but the weather is pretty much fucked up. Any ranter who is able to see it please share your experience.
And as for time being,I will just continue to pray for sky to get clear.3
Usually I rarely listen to music while I work, but just ran a song from Tracy Chapman "Crossroads" and from Sophie Zelmani "Maja's Song" on the radio.
Absolutely great singers. So relaxing. Couldn't help but order all! of her albums at Amazon.
Now I have to drive to McDonalds in the rain, buy a burger and use the Free Wifi Hotspot to quickly download all the albums.
With my 64kb/s (mobile connection) it would take months :)2
every 3rd day its raining here
who the fuck programmed the weather to rain in the middle of a summer and thought it was a good idea?4
Right now it's raining in São Paulo, and quite a lot.
While I also worry about it because of usual stuff (floods, infiltration, etc.), I'm also jumping like a little kid.
Puddles? No! Free bath? Almost!
It comes with a free excuse to NOT do work because of a small power outage, caused by poor maintenance of utility poles in my street.
Actually, one of the transformers in one of the poles just goes "bzzt" then "blam!" and then we have to wait for them to repair after rain stops.
It's always like this.
I know, it's NOT a good thing. But it's not bad to have a little rest, right?
It's pretty sad to reach a state where I'm happy when these things happen. :/2
So after previously telling the story of my laptop in the rain, I thought I should follow up with this one. (this is couple months later)
My laptop was bought second hand by my father (who doesn't know anything about computers) and the poor thing had a tendency to overheat. It worked fine, but under heavy load it would only last a couple minutes before it shut down.
So once I was cleaning out the fan (as dust accumulated in there) and I ran it under the tap, to get everything off. Sure, you might cringe at the idea but I thought some water wouldn't hurt it, especially after surviving en evening in the rain. So I cleaned it and let it dry.
A while later, when it finished drying I started to reassemble my laptop. After about 30 mins of fiddling with it, it was back together and ready for a fresh start! So I powered it on.
Sparks flew. Smoke started coming off the motherboard. More sparks.
I pulled the cord. "Fuck, glad I caught it on time..."
I waited a while longer. Turn it back on. "Fan is not functioning properly or is missing". FML. After all it had survived, a bit of water in the circuit that made the fan spin is what took it down 😑
Fast forward two years (without a fan, shitty days), and I bought a second hand Lenovo laptop that I adore. So I thought I'd sell the laptop on Ebay, but first I should fix the fan so that I wouldn't have to sell it for next to nothing. Part number was hard to find, and bought it from somewhere in Europe. Four weeks later, the fan arrived at my doorstep.
Took the laptop apart (have I mentioned how hard that was?) and replaced the fan. Felt good to fix what I had ruined two years back. Put it back together (after applying thermal paste, I'm not a monster) and powered it on.
"Fan is not functioning properly or is missing"
After checking the connection a couple times, I realized that what had given out was the motherboard connector for the fan, after the water incident. Wasted 40 dollars and several hours of my time for nothing.
The laptop that survived hours in the rain was taken down by a wee bit of water. So sad.2
Unusual play ocan waves sounds effect or rain or a moving train sounds .
Close my eyes and just be null ...
For like 5 min ..
The website we where at for about a year now had about 4 different designs.
Maybe I was a bit slow with it and didn't try to be fast about it.
But it's not my fault I had to redesign the site 3 times
So, the project has just been dropped in the toilet.
I mean, I work at a company with is for learning apprentices and I didn't get additional pay for the site, but still, it's just another unfinished fucking project...
Nothing against the client she was nice and understanding of needs, limits and expectations
For me it's about removing grey from my life. I make decisions about things and move on. It's either black or white, there's no grey, true or false. It can be a little odd for new friends. For example, a trak comes on the radio, someone asks me do you like this, well I have to really like it in which case it's brilliant or no it's shite. Why would i say it's ok as its so vague and doesnt reveal my true feelings about stuff. Sorry i am waffling on about bullshit, just waiting for the chemist to open in the pissing down rain.
Exactly what you think it is. But maybe lighter than that.
Basically if I unfocus my eyes every so slightly, I can see what looks like really fast drizzling rain, except it looks like light, faintly though. Like I kind of have to look for it, but it's there. Sometimes really obvious, sometimes not.
It's as though being in front of a monitor too much fucked up my eyes, or something.
More pronounced if I've been awake coding for maybe more than a day...
Just me? or anyone else?
Kind of caused me problems a few times, thinking it was something else....
I really want to know if anyone else has experienced this.5
Anyone seen the series "You Are Wanted Wanted" with the german actor Matthias Schweighöfer on Amazon? (Don't know if it's available outside of Germany)
Anyways.. they basically took scenes from various known digital works and put them in there. And whenever that happened i felt the cringe rising in me..:I
Examples are faked cctv recordings as seen in prison break, JASON with the red balloon, heavy rain and the all people are hacked and used thing from a black mirror episode..1
I'm at my best when it is constantly raining outside. It's hasn't rained properly in 6 months or so here in Portugal :/
Productivity has been picking up last 2 months but it's still depressing for it to not rain for so long when it is the "saviour" of your work. Also my country is in a severe drought and the thought of no water doesn't help.
It's a beautiful day outside. I wish it were raining. We're forced to work Sunday and I already hate it.
There are 52 Sundays in a year, and 1/3 of them are covered in snow, ice and brutal winter. I don't want to be here today. I want to be outside.
Almost everyone in this room has a partner or kids or someone to go home to. I get to go home alone. I hate it here. I can't even look at my manager any more. I hate him. I will never do this again. No amount of money gets you a Sunday back.2
Dev goals for 2019:
At least one substantial tech blog post per month (no rain-checks allowed)
Do whatever it takes to have Elixir as the focus of my day job instead of .Net
best zone will be rain... lots of it and a touch of coolness in the air... also the espresso machine from arms reaching distance.
The all too common passwords stored in clear text. When brought up with the developer they couldn't see the problem.
Facing some down - simultaneously somehow as dev and privately.
The dev part partly triggered by another burning project. Our team deep in shit up to the chin... And this unanswerable question: who is to blame? Everyone is working up their arses, but the result is still some sparkling firework ship wreck, that only held together for the demo to the board. It's not that we are stupid or lazy, yet we push some unmaintainable spaghetti, because this shit just gotta work.
Dunno, somehow this object orientation / pattern ideologies were also kind of depressing to me: partly because they smell like attempt to enlighten the inept by stupid receipts - and of course then deep down there's this nagging question if I'm not one of this inept not knowing the newest fashion template from the catalogue..
Then this Clean Code - Craftsmanship shit is bugging me similarly. Liked Robert C. Martin's book, but now I picked up some "Clean C++" and.. I kinda feel dumbed down if they try to sell the KISS principle to a 36 year-old physicist/engineer. Good for them that all our legacy shit und own fuck ups nourish this whole industry of well-meaning advisers. Argh, just fuck it, you priests, sell your obvious calendar mottos elsewhere, they are are just as useful as telling a griever that "rain follows sunshine". - As if they would not some time use the raw pointer that their coworker gave 'em, to ship shit tomorrow?
Which umbrella do you guys use? I'm looking an umbrella for rain and should be portable so that I can fold and put it on my bag.7
Fellow devs, I request your support in my insanity, in about a month I will be running 22km to rain money for my local SPCA.
Has auto correct outsourced the necessity of correct spelling? Any thoughts on incorrect spellings in grammar which rain down upon us in everything from emails to published work.2
Vagrant, VMware and CentOS.
The perfect storm to drive me mad all day.
If anyone knows how to get the shared folders working in this fucking shitstorm of arse rain let me know I'm slowing drowning in this fucking river of shit.4
