Boss: I have really bad new
Boss ... we have to clean your room tomorrow and remove all the Stallman posters, because marketing wants to film shit. But dont worry, we put them right up again when they are done10
Not one feature.
All analytics systems in general.
Whether it's implementing some tracking script, or building a custom backend for it.
So called "growth hackers" will hate me for this, but I find the results from analytics tools absolutely useless.
I don't subscribe to this whole "data driven" way of doing things, because when you dig down, the data is almost always wrong.
We removed a table view in favor of a tile overview because the majority seemed to use it. Small detail: The tiles were default (bias!), and the table didn't render well on mobile, but when speaking to users they told us they actually liked the table better — we just had to fix it.
Nokia almost went under because of this. Their analytics tools showed them that people loved solid dependable feature phones and hated the slow as fuck smartphones with bad touchscreens — the reality was that people hated details about smartphones, but loved the concept.
Analytics are biased.
They tell dangerous lies.
Did you really have zero Android/Firefox users, or do those users use blocking extensions?
Did people really like page B, or was A's design better except for the incessant crashing?
If a feature increased signups, did you also look at churn? Did you just create a bait marketing campaign with a sudden peak which scares away loyal customers?
The opinions and feelings of users are not objective and easily classifiable, they're fuzzy and detailed with lots of asterisks.
Invite 10 random people to use your product in exchange for a gift coupon, and film them interacting & commenting on usability.
I promise you, those ten people will provide better data than your JS snippet can drag out of a million users.
This talk is pretty great, go watch it:
Assembly: He’s the nerd. He speaks very quickly and uses short sentences. Very few people talk to him. He’s considered to be an autist asperger by a majority of the class because he finishes the exams so quickly it’s insane and he faces a lot of difficulties in speaking with others. He’s at school but already dressed like an engineer.
Ada: She’s a foureyes nerd. When she gets the answer she’s doesn’t make any mistake. Ada often corrects the teacher when she writes a line a little ambiguous. She’s building a rocketship in her backyard and she’s always speaking about this weird hobby.
Python: He’s Mr Popular. He likes skate, brags about all the parties he’s invited to. He’s good in all the subjects taught in class but he’ll do them a bit slower than the others. Everyone loves him because he explainsthings so well, sometimes the teacher herself asks Python to explain some part of the course. He’s dressed with a hoodie, a baggy and glasses on the top of the head ;)
Java: She is one of the toppers of the class and very popular. She’s very good in all the topics. The teacher loves her but she’s a very talkative person.
Scala/Kotlin: They are twin sisters and the best friends of Java. Unfortunately, they are not as popular and it’s often Java who takes the lead in the group. It’s very difficult to distinguish one from another. Both are far less talkative than Java but Scala speaks a bit differently than Kotlin and Java.
C: He’s the topper of the class. He’s so fast in completing the exams that the teacher really thinks he’s copying Assembly’s work. He has a little brother C++ and they share a lot in common together. He’s the chess major and often plays chess with Assembly and his big brother.
Go: He’s the new kid on the bloc. He doesn’t like C++ and his friends and he wants to prove he can do better than them. Of course, he prefers playing Go over Chess.
APL: He’s a lonely guy. No one understands him when he speaks. Even the teacher is surprised when APL shows a correct answer after several lines of incomprehensible pictograms. People think that he was born in a foreign country… or a foreign planet ?
HTML/CSS: These twin brothers are very different. One is dressed in black and white and the other is dressed with everything except black and white. HTML is very talkative and annoying and the CSS is very artistic. CSS is the best student in Art lessons and HTML performs well in written expression.
LaTeX: She’s friend of HTML. The teacher likes her because she has a gift of writing. LaTeX likes the mathematical courses because she can draw fancy greek letters. The teacher knows this well and she is often asked to write a formula on the black board.
VBA: He’s in the back, looking through the windows. Not really interested in the courses taught in class. In the exams, he answers always with a table.
C#: He’s in the back playing yet another game on his smartphone. He likes being next to the windows also.
Haskell: He’s a goth. Dressed up in dark. Doesn’t talk to anyone. He doesn’t understand why others write pages when he can write a couple of lines to answer the same question.
Julia: She’s the newest student here. She doesn’t have any friends yet but her secret aim is to be as popular as Python and as fast as C.

I'd love to watch a movie where a hacker is trying to infiltrate a system and instead of getting in after 15 seconds they spend the entire feature film swearing at the monitor and smashing their head on the keyboard.7
My love towards Microsoft:
When install Windows 10, world's most advanced operating system, I agree to use express installation to make sure I am sharing all the information with Microsoft.
Right after installation, I chose Microsoft Edge as my default browser. Can't live without it really. I also make sure my search engine is set to Bing!
Then I continue to setup Cortana and share all my personal information with her. I install office 365 to to work with my documents and use skype to chat with my friends.
Then I install Visual studio and set all my projects to Windows Application only. I mean who uses any OS other than Windows?
It doesn't finish there. Groove Player is my first choice for listening to music, Film and TV for my videos and etc.
I also always use Microsoft Maps to find my way to work!
Went to see Jason Bourne last night. No spoilers, but I'm guessing this is how the writers came up with the story:
Writer 1: Let's make it super techie
W2: Yeah, that way it's about current issues, like Internet privacy.
W1: Should we hire a tech consultant so we get things right?
W2: Nah, I saw the Matrix once, I understand computers.
Actual line from film:
"Use SQL to corrupt their database"
I just mistyped a keyboard shortcut that caused my computer to say «I AM FILO AND EVERYONE LOVES ME» at full volume.
I have no memory of leaving a script attached to some random shortcut, and I can't find the setting anywhere.
Young me was a narcissistic asshole2
Yesterday I had to film something but I was too lazy to set up my LED pannel so I wrote a blank html page and opened it in fullscreen on my projector.7
A really neat short film by JetBrains about bugs and how they are fixed. I wish this would be reality ^^
Project for school: The answer in most cases is no. I feel glad I could make a documentary on this topic.25
One small feature..
A flake of red pepper on a big plate of spaghetti..
One wrong move and everything could CHANGE.
In the hostile jungle of the Kumar, the Manoj, and the Lohar lies the maze-like spaghetti crop circles where skeletons of developers lost forever between classes and functions decorate the kingdom of doom.
Follow Johnny as he attempts to put that pepper on the big bad spaghetti monster. Will he survive? Or will he suffer the same fate as everyone else?
Spike up your blood pressure and waste your life in this eye-rolling, vein-popping, death-inducing action adventure film.
"Johnny Sins: The Meatballs Within"
In coding camps near you.5
Saw conjuring 2 yesterday, not impressed. My project has more daemons than the film and they don't go away just by calling their name 😕2
Warning: pretty sad thoughts. If you're having a blast of a day, please skip. It's for your own good.
That feeling when you finish watching a piece of art. Be it a film or anime or anything. You're confused why you feel good, but at the same time you're hurt. You smile but the pain is still there when you reflect on the feelings and the experiences you had and you realise that none of it will ever happen again. No art or any of the past will happen again exactly the same way how you felt and experienced.
You think of the best friend you once had. Think of the girl you held hands with and time stopped. The first time you embraced her and knew you loved her more than anything, even if she didn't know your feelings. Think of your first kiss. Your first serious relationship. The last time you saw your parents, your wife, your children, family.
Now look at the perspective of the future and the past you: blissfully ignoring the certain end to all experiences until they all abruptly end reminding you of this and it hurts. Damn it hurts.
I will never be able to see me best friend again, nor will I ever be able to hold hands with her either. First time I kissed is now long gone. It's almost like you wish you were aware of how valuable and important the experience was and to not just throw it away like the last time and the several times before that. But the sad part is, you don't know which experience will make you realise how much you missed it.
But even if you do realise by placing yourself in the place of your future self, and you cherish the experience, you blame yourself because you could have either avoided it's end or did something better.
Like your break up: could it be fixed? Was it worth the little time you have on this plante?
Like your friends argument you had: could you have done better? Could you have stopped it?
Like your parent's death: could you have been a better son to your now overworked dying mum? Could you see how hard they tried even though you thought they were total dicks?
Now you realise that literally anything you do, you will have a problem with somewhere down the line. You're destined to be sad shattered and broken by every day that is tragedy.
But it's similar to art. After all, your life is a piece of art about how you died. Which is why you smile and enjoy the last second of the experience which you just had. That chest warming feeling will only last a little. You smile through pain, yet you realise its not the end.
Then again, its just my thoughts that i need to vent. Take it with a pinch of salt.8
I never liked when rappers do the bridge on emotional songs.
the song starts like "ooohh, baby I love you, you know we're for each other, bla bla",
then the rapper comes up with some raw shit like
"baby you know that this cum is only for you,
we're meant for each other, you suck me so good,
you know that you moan when I raw in your ass"
bro, wtf... it was a gentle romantic song...
or when the singer is depressed, has dilemmas about life
and the rapper's like "im rolling on my mercedes bitch"
it actually sounds like rapper is intentionally making the singer look like a pussy.
now, before some troll comments that I'm an idiot dinosaur that can't understand hip hop, let me say:
I like hip hop, I'm not gonna make a fool of myself by name dropping rappers from the past or today, as if you needed credentials to emit any option about the genre. I will only say that I've been listening on and off since I was 15.
And I like emotional songs as well, any genre.
The problem is that I feel a sort of disconnect between the singer and rapper of a song.
You can't have one performer be like "I feel sad, life is hard" and then the other like "I GOT HELLA MAD DICK NIGGA, CHOKE ON MY CUM", in the SAME fucking song.
They are completely opposite emotions,
That works in movies, eg: a romantic slasher film, but that shit works because it's feature length.
There's enough time to make transitions and to let the mood slowly change.
Meanwhile, these guys are trying to stitch these things together in 3 fucking minute songs.
But this shit dominates the charts, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯2
Just deployed my first big project!
Build on React using Redux and HTML / CSS (captain obvious).
The website is called https://2dor3d.com
It allows movie fans to vote Yes or No 3D after seeing the film in 3D.
On the other hand, it allows movie goers to check the current score and see if that extra 3D cash is worth it!
Maybe not, if it has a low score better buy the 2D ticket.
I would love it if you guys could check it out and hopefully start using it!
I'm super proud.
W1ckeD out, mic drop.14
So I just decided I'd hotspot my phone to my laptop (as I have no WiFi) and stream a film I've wanted to watch for a while.
Turns out my shite ass mobile provider wants credit card details to prove I'm over 18.
I'm sorry, what?
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? YOU NOSY OVER CONTROLLING SHIT STAINS! THAT IS A PARENT'S JOB, NOT YOURS.
fucking hell. What is wrong with this fucking race?
Oh, and I can't torrent it because that's blocked too.7
Last year I wanted to experiment with some 35mm film, so I got a 1978 Canon A-1. I was pissed when people started asking me how many megapixels does it have!2
about 2 weeks ago my mom's friend's family visit our house. one moment they introduce their brilliant son going to take Computer Science Major, and they didn't understand why, and apparently they are some kind of ignorant family. So my role here are to advertise and promote the world of CS (since i know their son are good at programming). one moment i am diving to deep into my own speech, i am like :
"I believe you guys using facebook, and Whatsapp all the time **give a smirk and sarcastic look* (which they actually did), that is our work there. and maybe you (my mom's friend) love to play candy crush with my mom, yes that is also our work, and we got a lot of money from you buying the candy to unlock the hard level (the microtransaction thing) MUAHAHAHAHA !" ---
and yes i am laughing like a monster in a film. and suddenly that becoming the most awkward thing i ever had.
and i don't know should i feel bad or not introducing CS like that.3
The biggest national televison channel (governmental) is doing a report about our company tomorrow, so i will be om TV
I'm a little nervous tbh
Do you have any cool ideas for some small eastereggs when they film my screen/the office?
A devRant logo somewhere is already planned ;)8
I guess I can also amend in my long, ongoing, storied history of bad calls, failed projections and stellar forecasting that:
- I invested an embarrassing amount of time, money and hope learning Adobe AIR
- I've sent-away for the https://inventhelp.com patent registration kit at least twice
- I've publicly declared that OAuth would never last
- I actually thought Microsoft was onto something with J++
- I bought a bunch of shares of World Wrestling Federation stock the day it went public
- I've stated on my movie podcast that I'll defend until my last breath my argument that Godfather III may be the best film in the series
Can I pick 'em, or what? ;)
Part 1 of my bad calls: https://devrant.com/rants/2786266/...11
Watching a film with friends. I could be coding right now.
Are Blockbuster supposed to be entertaining? My programms less predictable than the story line. I have assignments to do, yet I must adore this.
School is litterally more fun than watching that shit.5
Film a documentary/reality television series chronicling how A. I.'s eventually self destruct trying to make sense of client requirements.
you know how every film awards ceremony has a dead people section where they play a video showing the pictures of the newly deceased but stylized like as if they perished in battle, like sepia+zoom out?
anyhow someone should edit a video like that for devrant users that deleted their accounts.
i browsed my posts yesterday and noticed several users that aren’t among us anymore.
(cue gregorian chant) may you rest from idiot managers and idiot client.7
TL;DR: Stop. Hating. On. Ads. Here are 5 reasons why:
1. "No one likes ads"
I love seeing *good* ads before I watch a YouTube video. Or I looked up videos that YT recommended because they sounded fun and they were fun:
- Coke - Hey Brother is an amazing and touching short film
- Fressnapf (="food bowl") had an incredibly enjoyable "things you didn't know about cats" video I clicked on purpose and it was good.
- I found JetBrains through ads (free for me, student perks. But tbh I use atom)
and I could name more.
2. What are the alternatives?
I know there are some non-profits and that's cool but you wanna be paid in your job, right? So ads are why Facebook (I know, Facebook isn't enjoyed here but), YouTube, stackoverflow, etc. Wikipedia asks for a few million dollars of donations each year because they don't run ads. Smaller businesses can't do that really. Hell, even codepen has a "sponsored" section. Imagine you would have to pay for all of those services.
isn't a bad thing unless you abuse it. I manipulate you when I say that I love codepen in the same way an ad does. No one forces you to use a product or watch an ad (you can look away and often times skip).
What if everyone did that? Adblock blocks happened a while ago and the war between adblock and ad-senders is still ongoing. The moment you see an ad, you are using/watching etc something which the creators thought is worth making money off. If you don't think so, leave the site. I am an adblock user but if the site politely asks me to disable it and I enjoy the content - I will disable it with pleasure.
5. Targeted ads
Yes. The internet is a huge data-crawling piece of shit. But there are many more questionable or even dangerous ways of data-harvesting online. I am glad to see ads I like and not the ones my sister might like. Some services allow you to disable personalized ads. Or use vpn if you really want to.9
Fucking hell!!!!! So much to put out... multiple topics..
1. I had something to complete and for the sake for good beetle bug, I cannot figure out what that is and have the shitty constant feeling of 'something is pending and needs to be done'. This happens soo often and is just very annoying. While I have bigger tasks pending for later, I aim to finish smaller ones but cannot remember. I need to start writing everything down now.
God damn fuck what is it?
2. I watched The Social Dilemma. Fucking cringe fest. Made by a friend of those companies, Netflix is doing the exact same thing with the film as that is shown it in. What a shitty irony.
A propaganda movie revolving around politics, conspiracy theory (how ironic again), and the very great united states of murica. Wasted my 1.34 hours and it was soooo stupid on sooo many levels. I don't even feel like discussing it here.
3. I am sooo irritated right now due to SAD. I am starting to dislike my dark themes. I need a lamp and it is not available in my country. Someone feed me sunlight.. just cannot wait for month end to pop in some supps. Await it more eagerly than pay cheque, these winters. And let's not talk about the symptoms like headaches and how it causes anxiety. Do I need to cut down my coffee? Because I don't really want to cut the only decent thing I have left to consume.
4. This weather. Autumn. I fucking love this time of the year. End of September to Year end. It makes me nostalgically sad but it's soooo comfy and cosy for soul. But SAD ruins the fun and lack of proper celebrations of Indian fests and Halloween.
5. It's been approx 3/4 weeks I started using MS Edge, the interface is neat but I am seeing some drop in internet speed and when I access Chrome again, the fact that Chrome too faces internet speed drop is weird. Feels like I should move back to Chrome because only thing is better here is the interface and spotlight images. The image/video rendering sucks (or is it just me?). Chrome also provides bookmark synching. Not sure what would work out in few weeks.
6. Lastly and most importantly, the patterns. The fucking patterns everywhere. An event happens and then it happens again and then again. Patterns exist everywhere and my brain is real champ at identifying patterns but why the fuck do patterns exists!!!!! Fucking WHY???
Whatever it be, the "history repeats itself" patterns are making fractals and annoying the shit out of me.
The good thing is, talked to this friend of mine and she is really nice. Like we talk a lot (whenever we do) and since I am on job hunt, she came up with some kickass resources and ideas and links and much more just to help me out.
She is a sweetheart and for that matter, most of my friends are actually going forth and helping me in multiple ways to get a job. I mean I am just amazed by the fact that help poured in from all side without even asking.
I absolutely love such people who go extra mile to be in your life without you even asking.
I am surrounded by some good gems that warms my heart.8
I got out of bed at 2:10am to film the Falcon Heavy launch from my driveway, where I have a direct, due east line of sight to Cape Canaveral. I’m thinking “What a time to be alive!” and “Why didn’t I pursue the aerospace career I started in college?”5
So here we go again.
Same "web designer", same me, same website (based on wordpress, completely redone front-end UI, full of ACF to keep their fucking data).
WD: ok, I'll need you to add an information on the project page template in order to show a gallery with slider at the bottom and "film+visuals" at the top if there is a gallery.
1 week later, after like 40 e-mails between us deciding if it was ok or not on DEV server and pushing it to PROD
Me: ok, done
WD: hey, if it's just a film there should be written "FILM" while there's nothing showing, also the gallery must have same height as the film above
Me, internally: why the fuck didn't you fucking tell me before pushing to PROD? are you fucking dumb or something?
Me, via email: ok, i'll check it now...2
I find it bizarre that streaming services have a "skip intro/recap" button and clearly marks a segment in a film/show worthy of forgetting but will keep it in your "continue watching" section if you leave during the credits.
Surely you would mark this as complete if the identifiable segments exist?1
"If you’re presented with a situation – a man is drowning – and you could either choose to save the man or shoot the scene, what kind of film would you use? " - Photographers’ proverb3
Family wasn't very supportive of my first choice (Film Directing) and since I live in Latin America and both of my parents come from very poor families, they pushed me to engineering in order to make money and live a better life than they did.
Even though it was not my initial call and they were not very supportive of my first choice, once I started CS they gave me everything I needed to keep on studying.
Overall, I think that for a lot of coders out here from third world countries, we can agree that engineering was not our first call, but it's mostly a way to get out of poverty and into a field that gives you advantages over others.
Shout out third world country ranters!3
Through life, I've heard some people say horror movies are bad, that they promote violence (usually religious people).
Of course I think that's pure bs, but I think I could provide one argument that is hard to deny, so here it goes, although I might go off rails at the end.
I'll preface with this: life itself is violent. Violence, the word, is mostly used to describe immoral inflictions of harm on other beings.
But you can also say that some deaths are violent by themselves too, event those that weren't caused by humans, like a disease or a natural disaster.
This would be the "visual" meaning of the word, "the way it looks", the shock of humans when observing something gruesome/violent.
That described, it's not hard to also think that technological advancements in modern western life has made such observations of violence very unfrequent for people.
And naturally, modern people get accustomed to the lack of these observations. So accustomed that when they happen they become traumatic.
Because of this, people react weirdly to death. One reaction is censoring the topic. Another reaction is trivializing it, as if it doesn't really matter.
Sometimes they can't even accept old people dying at 90, an awfully stupid reaction in my opinion.
Another interesting reaction is personifying diseases as if they were villains ruining lives intentionally.
Or at least that's what it feels until you look at them through a microscope and realize that diseases aren't more evil than bread changing flavour after toasting.
All of these irrationality and cowardice comes from low exposure to violence, and that's where horror movies balance things out.
Some diseases in the real life can put some of the worst horror movies to shame.
The human body itself is pending violence. Why? Because when you die all sort of worms eat your fucking flesh. And sometimes that happens even before you die.
We bury humans because of the diseases corpses transmit, but also because we don't like the spectacle and the aesthetics of the rotting process.
Just picture for a second bad things happening to your body, and if you feel that is making you too uncomfortable, then maybe you got too used to this too.
I think horror movies help us to remember the reality of our inminent and intrinsic violence.
In ancient times, you would live outdoors, stepping on dirt, and be very used to "bad" things happening to humans.
Nowadays, most homes are sterile clean, and it's unlikely to observe violence.
Oh, some family member is pucking blood and dying from something? Send em to a hospital, or an elderly care center. Don't need to witness that!
I understand and accept grief. What I don't understand or accept is the vilification of death, describing it as something wrong that shouldn't happen.
it almost feels like a burden, like you shouldn't die when you're young, that it's an unforgivable thing to happen.
Well thanks, society, you can't even fucking die in peace.
I would love to die (no suicide) in a mildly celebratory way, watching people around me smile. I think that would be a good ending for me.
But no. Most of my relatives would be fucking crying like the chickenshits they are, ruining it for me.
And that scares the shit out me: people usually say the scary part of dying is that they die alone.
Well that's what dying alone would mean to me: watching people cry instead of smiling at me.
When my grandma died at 80, with all the achievements she made, I considered her death a success, also considering how quick it was. And because of that I didn't mourn for too long.
In fact, I don't even consider her dead, and not because of some religious mumbo jumbo. I guess the memories are still alive in me, I don't know.
Some famous chunk of coal said once that he felt people don't believe they're gonna die. And I agree with him.
Another upside of horror movies is that they hurt nobody, which is why you can enjoy it and not get ptsd, unlink watching a snuff film.
I will also be fair and add that this might a be a cultural thing, but deep down desire for survival is a genetic thing could play a big part in this too.4
You think you are fucked until you realize that Matt Daemon is lost in mars with win xp.damn you nasa, you cheap bastards! (photo taken by me during the film) no spoilers please, i haven't finished it yet1
What music do you listen to while programming?
I personally listen to a lot of epic film music or metal, depending on my mood.14
Android studio emulators suck dick. I've been trying to put some goddamn files on the emulator in order to film my app working- hey, whaddaya know, the app doesn't see any of the files (On my phone it works flawlessly) and when I try to get to "emulated" folder- access is denied. What the actual fuck android studio?
p r i n t e r s
I was about to print a bigass document. Wanted to save paper, and saw my printer had a two side mode. I try it out. A few pages print, then the driver says PAUSED - RELOAD PAPER. This is normal, as double sided printing is not automatic. Underneath, there is a message:
[Printing - Manual Duplex: Please reinsert pap...]
I try to resize the window to read the message.
THE MOTHERFUCKING WINDOW WAS NOT RESIZEABLE!!!
are these products not fucking tested???
I find a guide saying the paper should be reinserted with no flips, then the "continue" button should be pressed.
The button was not in the driver UI, or on the printer. Further research showed that you are supposed to:
OPEN THE TONER CHANGE DOOR AND CLOSE IT AGAIN TO CONTINUE A PRINT
what fuCKING designer thought this shit through!?#@?#$!
I feel sad to say this but...
I'm hyped for the pixel 4, currently rocking my 6th pixel 2 XL (fuck these screens and camera units) and the pixel 3 was just all levels of no from the notch, incremental upgrade status and just a phone following the trends.
Looking at the leaks and official confirmations of the pixel 4 actually have me keen for photography (I do prefer a DLSR or straight up film unit but a good in the moment camera is amazing), performance and lack of notch just have me keen...
Forgive me father for I have sinned4
Devrant got my hopes up when I got on and saw the fancy new website.
Of course, the webapp is the same old interface :(
new site looks great though!!3
This is story and not a rant about my journey in programming. I've left out some details ofc, some of which I couldn't remember and some I got too lazy to add. They're not that important so I omitted them. There may be a lot of errors but it's almost 3 am and I cba. I'm tried but yeah, just decided to share something because it's been a while. I would also like to hear you guys' journey as well. Maybe they might inspire someone, who knows 🤷🏿♂️.
I had a thirst of learning more about computers and how they worked when I was around 13. I started looking into web development because I was really curious how websites worked. I started using cms's like web.com, enjij.com and any other cms I could find back in 2011 to build websites just to get a basic knowledge. A year later I picked up programming because I wanted to start making them by myself from scratch. I did some research and found websites that teach you how to start. I used codecademy and YouTube to teach myself the basics of web programming. It was fine for a while until I got bored and wanted more. I found out about php and it's capabilities. so I learned that using the same methods. I built sites for my Minecraft server, a small e-company I wanted to start and social media sites just for fun. I struggled with bugs and issues of course but that made it fun. The late nights trying to fix them or the late nights where I burst with ideas and was just coding. it was bliss. I wanted to expand my knowledge and tried learning Python but I felt overwhelmed back then and took a break. The years go by, I still made websites using php, js, html and css. I improved my skill with them. Now using OOP, writing sleeker and better code and my web designs improved massively as well as my MySQL abilities. It was time for me to graduate and I wanted to go into computer science but because of how much time spent programming, I fell back on my classes and just barely managed (albeit it wasn't the only reason, I slacked and didn't care because I felt hs was too easy for me at first). I instead went on to do a game design course in Toronto Film School and that's where I learned c# for unity and a little bit of c++ (this shit is so hard bro, I couldn't keep up and I've forgotten most of it). Fast forward, I graduate with decent grades and can now make some pretty nice games. I took a year off after that to look for jobs but as you know, you need experience and it's not easy to get those. I tried making an android app and got stuck with a very simple but that took 4 months to fix and then I burned out. I also lost my programming motivation partly because I felt like I wasn't making anything unique and meaningful. I felt empty so I quit for a while. All my plans fail and I decide to go back to school to upgrade the marks I needed and either do comp sci, mechanical engineering or stem. I forgot to mention btw that my goals shifted from just programming to being an inventor. Anyways, I boosted my grades and I did superbly so I can go into anything I want now. Currently just waiting for my acceptance letter while learning Python again along with react, SharePoint and a few other things to boost my skills and knowledge. I'm slowly getting my mojo back and it's really fun. But yeah that's my journey 😁1
I'm planning on building a smart mirror. Anyone has any experience with mirror film? If I've got it all correct, it looks more grainy than a regular mirror. Pictures perhaps? :)
(Spoilers about Ready Player one here)
I watched Ready Player One in 4DX AND IT COSTED AN UNHOLY FUCKING AMOUNT OF MONEY!

A tech as well as a life question (actually more of a useless sleepless thought) : What do you think is more important? Exposing yourself to multiple technologies, career paths and life experiences or diving deep into a single technology, career path and life experience?
I feel like being an expert in 1 tech might pay off in terms of job life , and it would be bad for a person who is constantly switching between career paths, but sometimes i feel like i should have tried other paths too. Not just the life of a techie, like people who are deep into media and journalism, accountancy or those film industry jobs ; politics or finances , etc.
Its like, we found an apple to be a tasty fruit and now we have to be the apple guy forever. The better i am in being the apple guy, the more i will have to eat apples and the more i will earn. Why can't i try pears or oranges?7
Just a question.
What's your preference when you're programming/developing.. Silence, music, a film on In the background etc..
Aimed to words programming at home etc rather than in a work place.
Personally, I think I'd go fucking insane programming in silence.9
So, Recently I had made a short film "Brazen Epiphany" and I added it to IMDB, I discovered that IMDB has a flawed verification system, they don't actually verify edits. So, I credited myself for acting in various films. And, they got approved. Then one day, a writer of one of those movies discovered this and ranted on Twitter about it
I told him about this whole stuff, Then I was contacted by a journalist amd they published a story on this
I know it's pretty lame to give wrong information to a community website, but I enjoyed it5
Saw few rants asking about liquor and coding. I'm a drinker but I never drink and code. And never will.
But I kinda have a fantasy similar to the opening act from the film "Swordfish" :31
Fuck you, Nvidia! Can't even watch a film in the fullscreen mode without image flicks. Why should I ever care about this bare shit in 2016? It's your task to support your crappy proprietary driver. Nouveau is even worse.5
Not sure where else to ask but here, as I am an unsocial creature; But I need new music!
My general favourite type of music is anything from any of the wipeout games, 90s techno style, think of the backing music from the film Hackers, and that's pretty much my vibe 90% of the time.
You guys got any suggestions? I can't be the only one here into deep techno/progressive industrial techno whatever you can call it I am really unsure!
prodigy, 808 state, wipeout style, possibly borderline on keygen/chiptune type music depending how its done
Thanks guys! *hug*3
I wonder what would happen if you showed up at an interview with a film crew. Would they think it cool or run you off.1
A video that a workmate sent me after receiving a client report this last week...have you ever felt like the expert in this short film? xD
Once i came to work to see my screens, keyboard, mouse, computer, cables, chair and even the table properly packed in food film. All things were at their place and actually could have worked like that.
One hour to go and our plane will set off.
It wasn't a good idea to read Homo Faber before this flight.
My German Teacher says he's waiting for a new Film of the book. Instead of this "engineer" back in 1954, you should just a computer nerd xD
I wanna see that1
I'm trying to waste time reading rants, but don't get half of them because our work wifi network is too slow to load pictures
I just woke up from a fun adrenaline packed film dream.
It started like an movie, leaning a bit into the funny side, but also a bit serious.
We were 3 guys going top speed on the highway, dodging traffic, trying to prevent a bomb from detonating on the other side of the city.
We were all famous actors, but the only one I remember was Jackie Chan. I remember thinking why would they cast Jackie Chan and give him so few lines.
I wished I remember more about this part. The only thing I remember is that when we get to the end of the island, we’re in the wrong place: we’re at a huge OBGYN center.
My sidekicks are bothering the desk women, eating all of the “waiting candy”. I feel bad and offer to pay those, which they pretend to not care about but then end up charging me down to the penny. Cunts.
The sidekicks leave and (without explanation because dreams) disappear of the story.
Defeated, I go outside and start walking.
And I don’t remember exactly what the fuck happened in between, but somehow I’m now in the house of a cartel druglord and he’s pissed and I need to run now.
So I do. I remembered that there was a very thick forest east to the house. So I go there.
And what follows is a very intense montage of me escaping.
At some point that forest ended, so I continue through some high weed, and then another forest, and so on. While I had to pass through parts with no vegetation, I had to avoid these as much as possible.
I saw dozens of types of trees and shrubs.
Then I started seeing families, kids, playing, relaxing on what seemed a Sunday afternoon.
The adventure was so fun, the landscape was so beautiful I felt happy and thought “this is how it feels to be alive”. And I actually felt happy in real life as well.
At some point the vegetation I encounter decreased, and I have to go through more urbanized areas, with more people.
“Uh oh” I think, “I hope no one snitches me”. But miraculously, no one does.
Throughout all the journey I had glimpses of the drug lord nearby presence.
His face on the distance, the sound of his car engine.
But now he was closer than ever. And I’m closer to this house which is the escape point (can’t really remember why).
So I reach for the handle and fade to white, and fade back again, it’s me, older, and I’m not in an escaping mood.
My wife is waiting, our car is outside (on the non drug lord side).
And guess what, we were waiting for our daughter, who comes with a smile and a child on her hands.
So apparently, my daughter married someone from the drug lord villa that almost murders me.
Reading this sounds like a bad script, but that’s what I dreamed today.3
Me and my friends decided to start a film company, much like roosterteeth. Throughout high school we had a talented group, actors, musicians, writers etc and those of us behind the scenes editing and shooting footage, graphic design and web development. My best friends passion is film, he's a good director and editor and wanted to start this company and was blessed enough to have a group of friends with all of these talents.
Naturally I was the teams web developer/designer.
Well this morning he texts me saying he's sending an old friend of ours my way to help on the website. My first thought is "why?". I code alone, I've never made a website as a team, that just seems like a mess.
Well the friend of ours texts me shortly after saying he was LEARNING to code and wanted to know if he could be in the dev team. I am the dev team. It's not a group to be joined. I don't want my first team experience to be one where I'll have to be teaching along the way, bc I may as well do it alone at that point. I haven't responded to either person yet as I was waiting to share with devRant 😂3
Looking at AI and regarding the stop button problem. (computerphile video about the stop button problem: https://youtube.com/watch/...)
And looking at Skynet from Terminator.
There is some chance that the goal condition for the AI was that humans don't press the stop button.
And Skynet's biggest goal is to prevent humanity to press this button by exterminating humanity.
So, the film writers are actually this one time totally justified to have a heavily guarded room with nothing but a big red button which instantly brings victory for humanity when pressed.
Critics will hate this "deux ex machina", but computer scientists and AI researchers will be like: "Ehm, actually, that makes a lot of sense."
I was ten years old. At this point, despite being in my early 20's, I've officially been programming more than half of my life. From the first moment I knew that this was possible, that we, as software engineers, can do what we do... I've been quite literally obsessed with the idea.
I don't like to give other people credit for the events in my own life, but there is one thing that, more than anything else at the time that lead me down the path of computer science, directly lead me to where I'm at today. If you're at all interested in film and cinema (not to mention programming) then you've undoubtedly heard of The Social Network, directed by David Fincher. Amazing film, I'd recommend it to anyone based off of the film alone, but for me that movie holds a special place in my heart.
My mom took me to see it that movie in theaters when it came out, I would not stop bugging her to take me, there was just something about the founding of Facebook that... Sparked my young imagination. I swear to you that I didn't blink for the entire time I was in the theater watching it. It blew my mind, not only that you could do that kind of stuff with computers, but that you could actually make a lot of money working with computers as well... Ten year old me had different priorities in regards to programming 😂 Starting the moment I got home from the theater, I dedicated my life to learning everything I could about computers. Originally my goal was to, shock of all shocks, create a social networking site for me and my friends to use. I still like to brag about it to this day, but that project eventually became my groups final project in our computer class in Middle School. It was funny, middle school computer class, I had already been programming a few years by that point and was rather proficient in PHP. There were kids submitting literal spreadsheets in Excel as their final project, a few static HTML pages, that sorta jazz. My group and I submitted a full fledged twitter clone, with complete functionality. We got 100% on the project 😂😂
My reasons and interests have changed over the years. For example, I'm not particularly interested in creating a social media application these days, and I don't program because I think it'll make me rich one day (though the hopes always there) but the one thing that hasn't changed since that night I sat enraptured in the beautiful cinematography of David Fincher and facepaced dialogue of Aaron Sorkin, is the complete and total fascination with computers and technology. For that reason The Social Network will forever be my favorite movie.3
Imagine if you could anything you want to do right now other than working like play games, watch a film, or sleep. That's your goal.
But to get it, you have to finish your work as fast and as effective as possible. Didn't finish your work? Sorry, can't stop. Hustle it.
The sooner it's done, the sooner you can do whatever the fuck you want.4
Hey there Ranters,
So I am big film and video guy. I was wondering what good IT shows you guys watching. My all time favorite is The IT Crowd. Most recent show i am watching is Silicon Valley.
"To create anything–whether a short story or a magazine profile or a film or a sitcom–is to believe, if only momentarily, you are capable of magic." - Tom Bissel
My work laptop broke over the weekend and now I have to use a replacement device… (cue the horror film music) …with Windows 10! (no, not 3628800)
So far I've gone mad about 20 times, including white font on white background, Chrome freezing on login, blurry font, Edge and Bing being opened all the time, displaying the "Users" folder as "Benutzer", despite it not being named that, …
I thought I could avoid Windows 10, I'll leave this company in a few months anyway. But no, the old laptop decided to die with almost the worst possible timing. At least it wasn't early May, then I'll write my final exams, including a five-day-project.
Also, who thought it was a good idea to put the "End" button NOT at the end of the keyboard? I've remapped it on three of my four laptops so far (one already had this arrangement), but on this one I don't even have admin rights. So I press the wrong button every minute or so.1
