Boss: “Our YouTube channel doesn’t look at all like our website.”
Me: “I’ve made it look as close to our branding as YouTube allows for with its limited editing controls.”
Boss: “This is unacceptable. I expected more from you.”
Me: “I cannot accept the blame for this. YouTube is setting the design parameters for all channels and I can only do so much.”
Boss: “You can call the YouTube, can’t you? Why didn’t you call them?”
Me: “.......and ask them....what?”
Boss: “You don’t ask! You tell! Our company has been around for 140 years. Our brand name carries that weight. They’ll change their design to what we need if you’re assertive enough.”
Me: “Ma’am, that’s just not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.”48
Manager on the meeting room suddenly talking to me:
Coffe2Code, share your screen please to show us the progress.
Me: *minifies all windows fastly and plugs the laptop to the big screen *
Manager : we start with documentation, open the world file that you sent to me.
Me: *opens word*
Word: *freezing on my CV that I was editing for another job application*
Word: oh everyone seen the CV? cool here your document11
I'm proud of my mom.... She's teaching herself WordPress and photo editing so she can help my dad's business :D
I disagree with WordPress entirely, but seeing my mom(who can barely create a new folder) teach herself something computer related is awesome.13
So was first day at new job ... Boss takes me around meeting everyone. One employee stuck editing file by typing in new records data, calls boss for help.
Boss to me: "I like to get handsy with data from time to time. "
*me smiling, watch how he copies and paste the new records*
ME to boss:"why don't you just write the script to update all the records?"
Boss:"I don't trust the automation of input. "
Me:" what about human error?"
*crowd of other employees gather around awaiting answer*
Boss:"we include margin of errors in our disclaimer to the client... "
*He hears himself*
Boss:"... and we bill by the hour why would we work faster for less money?"
*me grinning, going to remember that line next time I need extension of deadline*
Me*murmurs*:" Master has presented dobby with a sock"
*Girl in next cubicle snickers clearly caught the reference "
Going to love it here.3
My cousin calls me up and says that I am studying software engineering, so I must be having a laptop. Asks me to bring it to the the wedding.
I end up doing songs editing and all the dj stuff in the ladies sangeet.10
When you are on location (football stadium in this case) and you realize that some part of the algorithm isn't working quite right.
We are building a webapp for a little bet-game for our local football team and today was the first live test. I fixed the way the points are calculated in the half-time break.
You can edit code on mobile on gitlab. Doesn't mean you should, but you could. And I did.26
When you've been testing and debugging for an hour frustrated and furious and then found out that you've been editing a different file the whole time. 😥5
As most of you already know, I'm a writer. I've noticed the similarities between writing and programming:
1. Tabs vs spaces.
2. Both typically spend all their time with a single project.
3. Coffee... (Unless you're a tea lover like me.)
4. Both typically have no life.
5. Debugging is hell for programmers and editing/revising is hell for writers.
6. Strict clients for programming and strict editors for writing.
7. Semicolons... They're useful but everyone despises them.
8: Emotions. Programmers are angry at their code. (Why won't you work?) and writers feel depressed about their writing. (Why did you die?)
9. War of the programs. For programmers: Vim vs VScode vs Atom vs Sublime and etc. For writers: MS word vs Google docs vs Libre office and etc.
10. Online forums. Stack overflow and Writer's digest.
11. Typing... Typing... All day long.
These are only a few similarities. I've noticed a lot more than this.16
Good news: Learning to use Vim was tough as fuck but worth it. I've been on it for a week and not having to use a mouse for text editing anymore just naturally makes more sense.
Bad news: Nothing. Else. Has. Vim. I am going to be spending hours figruing out how to get this to work in MS Office online and Firefox to keep my workflow the same.
P.S. devRant should have a Vim option. Make it a perk for supporters. :)26
Waking up, feeling like I have a cold I sit down at my computer and see that my biggest client has asked for a minor change. I haven't had my coffee yet, but I can do what they're asking for in a minute. The site is *gone*. Just a permissions error. Have they been hacked?! Why hasn't the client called me?! The files are there and no changes have been made. It doesn't come up on any browser. 10 panicked minutes later I check it on my phone. It comes up. Wait a minute ... While editing /etc/hosts yesterday I'd accidentally uncommented a line for this site that I'd foolishly left in there. One character later my false alarm is solved. I'm getting my damned coffee now.1

Boss: We need a new functionality to record company names for now.
Me: Ok. (This will be a quick one)
(few mins later)
Me: Ok, adding/editing/deleting company names.. done. I also added "date recorded" field, just in case we need it.
Boss: Ok, thanks.
(~20 mins later)
Boss: We also need a functionality for the users which has "this" permission to be able to "request" for a company registration. We need to add fields to record the contact person, email, phone, etc.. Once a "request" has been submitted, "this" person-in-charge has to get a notification on the dashboard. And the requesters, should get a notification that they have a pending request sent. Once the registration is done, the requester has to be notified.

I was in my computer class an then I saw my best friend editing the code in Ms Word. What should I say to him?17
3D modelling, UVs, texturing, animation, video editing, compositing, motion graphics, motion tracking, 2D animation, and a fucking powerful render engine? Check.
Great community? Check.
Powerful and easy scripting system? Check.
A well organized dev team? Check.
People who care about UI/UX? Check (look at Blender 2.8).
Does it compete with a major corporation that would go into sloth otherwise? Check. (If you thought M$ was shaftware wait till you see Autodesk)
There are other FOSS projects that I really like, but my vote definitely goes to Blender.8
Lost a bet and switched from Vim to VS Code for a day. Ten minutes into, I found myself editing gitignore in the embedded terminal. Something went wrong.4
Presenting the inside of Xiaomi 5200 mAh power bank!
P.S. I tried Snapseed for photo editing and it's really nice ☺6
When your code changes don't give different results and after an hour you realize that you're still editing the old version....7
Top 5 advices from my senior coworkers
- Make some fucking templates
- Clone the fucking VM to make your tests, it takes 5
- Do fucking backup whatever you’re editing
- Take some fucking time to plan and write things down
- Don’t swear too much11
I’m fuckin done, editing this website layout is like teaching a kid with ie brain, worse is I need to use a fuckin sharepoint designer 2013 and I’m working on online sharepoint so everytime I saved something it’s delayed and my screen acts like having a motherfuckin seizure when I accidentally scrolled it. Not to mention grid doesn’t work here so I need to lay it out the fuckin old way. Oh the client also wants a fancy navbar so I literally hide the sharepoint desinger navbar and using js create my own navbar inside the container. Fuck you for creating this shit and actually sell it to people, it’s like working on a fucking old tech7
// devRant unofficial UWP update (v22.214.171.124)
devRant++ badges and extended rants and comments editing time (up to 30 mins for subscribers) are available also on Windows 10.
To subscribe you still need (I hope only for now) the official Android or iOS app.
But if someone is using also the PC Windows 10 version maybe is happy to see that. 😉
so I compiled and printed some mini stickers for my laptop and thought I'd share them with the community. Great if you want to be subtle or don't like big stickers clogging the looks of your precious babe. All images are high res so you can expand them if you'd want that.
(stickers use black background cuz my laptop is black and its easier to cut out but you can change that)
For editing:(plz don't judge for using odp/pptx I was restless and only had openoffice to edit)
I hate this trend of making a video out of every bit of information or tutorial you can find. Videos are slow, I cannot properly skip forward to the part I need and the people making these videos are hellbent on not editing out their mistakes to "be more genuine" or something fucking stupid like that.
I want some good old text-based guides. I want docs, READMEs and the like. I don't want to hear you coughing and spitting on your ultrawide monitor for 30 minutes only to find out what I need to know is in video 4 of your ongoing paid series.7
I love how Microsoft updated the user interface for editing the PATH variable in windows. Now it is possible to see all entries in a table, before there was just one textfield with many entries seperated by semicolons (I know the update is already some month old now, but still happy)5

Most horrible part of my life:
Boss: Hey J make an android app where people can access my website.
J: Why not just use the browser on your phone?
Boss: Because I said so.
J: Ok, you want me to make an android app for your website whilst editing photos and videos for you? Can't you get someone else to do it?
Boss: Just get it done.10
I bet this guy feels real fuckin helpful, editing not only the question, but literally every answer in the entire thread. His contributions include:
Adding italics to links (Really, he took the time and clicked "edit" just to do that to an answer)
Adding the word "The"
The fact that people spend their time religiously doing this makes my head spin.
Also aren't these edits bad? the title should be in google speak (i.e. short and broken English) so that they can be found from a search engine. I'm sure SO has some rules about the title or something, but I feel like it would be better in google speak.13
Pressed ctrl+z in eclipse after editing a file for about an hour and all my changes were undone.
🎵 it's my birthday... It's my birthday... It's my birthday...🎵
Yesterday tried to hack the cash value in Dirt 4... Used Cheat Engine and tried editing the values to 999,999,999 but didn't work. The values (multiple address) don't update in the game.
Well tonight I started the game again just to play a bit.... And I see the credits are... 999,999,999!!!!!
Oh and yes it actually is my birthday today lol21
Ive never really used vim, and therefore not completely understood all the jokes about it..
Yesterday, i somehow ended up editing my crontab with vim.
I have no idea how i managed to quit it, but something worked.
NOTE: No hardware was damaged in the process9
Do you ever spend an hour editing an email reply to a client before you send it? Trying something akin to alchemy when you attempt to convert snark, veiled contempt, and shock at how stupid the client is into something professional and polite? It’s like trying to bottle farts as fancy perfume.
Like the first draft is:
Please disconnect your computer from the wall and return it to where you bought it from and then never use a computer again you dopey fuck.”
Yes sir. I’ll have it done for you by tomorrow.”
God it hurts.4
I’m a backend guy.
But because of reasons I’m editing a winforms json settings editor.

Senoir dev was assigned to make a webapp for billing
Dude uses dreamviewer and writes code like a bitch
Phpmysqljqueryhtml whole thing mixed very badly and undocumented
His function name format fun_1()
a simple update cost him a day,
Told him to use brackets atleast and also a framework ,guy denies
Days go by
He learns a lot of stuffs from me ,like how to use inspect in chrome lol, how to use sqlite for small projects , and orm and frameworks.
He used to pin his mistakes on me, so that boss gets angry on me
Then i quit the job
2 years went by
Now he is unemployed, nobody wants a 24 year old plain php coder and template editing web developer
Anyway I hired him, he was my first senior, whatever he did,it didnt matter to me, bcoz i remember
the days we spent on the same hall right next to each other coding in php,
days we brainstormed to fix a div
Also the days we ate lunch and breakfast together6
Editing this method for half an hour. All of a sudden I realized I was editing the wrong method. This was me.

So today I started editing my CV because I want to apply for an internship in the UK; and because I've already got a Dutch CV, I just opened that document and started working from there.

By the time windows was extracting the file, I downloaded 7zip, installed it and extracted the file and started editing the files
Please allow me to share my thoughts since I can't totally outrage my frustration because we have this so-called fasting to control our anger towards a person we currently disagree with.
A letter from your loving, sincere, pretty and gorgeous working partner to my young, chubby, smart and clever colleague:
Please do cooperate in times of live editing from the FTP since CTO is not and will never be going to appreciate version control since CTO is too tired for giving a shit and just want deliverables be delivered as fuck perfectly regardless of the resources that we have.
As you know, I tolerated you for not getting the freedom of live editing as what you've experienced from your previous team lead. All I ask of you is to get fresh file from FTP whenever we touch the same file because firstly, God knows how frustrating it is how your hard work is going to be replaced and be gone as much as I do. Secondly, I don't want you to experience how pain in the ass could this be in the long run, and lastly, I don't want any hard feelings to be wasted just because of this.
P.S. I'm too shy to send this to you because I don't want to hurt your feelings and don't want to sound too seriouz and feel old. I also hope we share the same telepathic understanding so we can agree with each other.
Your loving, sincere, pretty and gorgeous working partner,
(thinking of stating my first name) 😂16
So I had to use office and image editing tools on Linux today.
Holy mother fucking god are these things awful. Gimp, pinta, gnome paint, libre office, open office... they seem like a project some guy threw together a weekend in his bedroom. The UX is shite and makes 0 sense. They crash and lag all over the place. For fuck sake!
Also... Gimp, libre office and open office. If you want to make an alternative to a well known product (Photoshop and MS Office in this example) then just fucking copy the god damn UI as much as you can. No-one is going to go learn your fucking half ass product, people only use this shit because it's free and available on Linux.
I swear, I seriously considered sending the images to my phone and just fucking edit them there because it would have been so much easier than using this pile of shit.
Sometimes.. Sometimes I really want to punch a developer in the face.
Heres why. Please appreciate the few minutes i spent on editing this to look nicer xD8
TMUX. The best thing EVER.
These days I can go around with my trusty 64GB USB3.0 flash drive, boot Linux off it, and use the VT to start Tmux.
Window 0: Editing
Window 1: Build testing
Window 2: CMakeLists.txt editing
Window 3: Web (Lynx!)
Window 4: Research (Manpages and Info)
Window 5: Music (CMus!)
I can launch the whole thing with a quick script. I don't even need to open the GUI. Everything is accessible from the VT.
So this is an funny one.
Im here enjoying some good music and coding.
Editing Marlin firmware (3D printer firmware).
I checked the code twice to be sure its ok as i had to have hands near the printer while its moving.
I apparently didnt check enough as i missed 1 if statement.
Making the printer to run at firmware allowed MAX speed.
I have my hands in there with piece of paper (For leveling)
I start it the function.
The nozzle was just in so perfect height that if i had my finger under it it would grab the skin and also burning it as it was at 215C.
How do i know so specifically ?
Well cause when i started the function that was what happened.
The printer moved very fast and i didnt react fast enough.
And to add to the injury as the axis was moving at nearly 900mm/s (Yes you read that correctly) i had to replace both the motor and stepper driver for the X axis.
If it didnt hit me it would be fine but as it hit me it tried to push more power to motor. Frying the stepper driver and the motor internals got fucked.
Also yes i was OK. It was just the top level skin layer and straight line only.
It just hurt a lot.
Now when doing something like this i wear gloves and also checking the code without my hands in there first.6
After 20 minutes refactoring code and changing methods, you realize you have been editing the wrong file -.-'1
Knowing the Linux command line saved my bacon!
I was on a plane, unable to connect to wifi, and needed to take a note... while not having any note taking applications or text editing applications on my phone. but what I DID have was a terminal application.
So, I made a file in my documents folder and echoed my notes into the file! A bit longer and more complicated than it needed to be, but it worked when I needed it to!12
F***!!! I can never post a rant/comment without making a typo and then realizing it and then editing it. Evry single one is edited.... why??😲5
One of my coworkers just had a baby, so he left work today and won't be back for a month or more.
We (accidentally) took the client's website down for 3 hours, messed up our git repo and when we finally fixed both things, I had to spend the rest of the day editing fucking vector graphics (which I had never done before and completely suck at).
I never realized how much work this guy does or how important he is until now.14
Uggg..... I'm trying to encode a binary file in Python which may be an image or may be an executable, and then decode it back into a file (I plan on editing it in the middle, but baby steps for now..) but nothing is working!!
My plan is to:
Open binary file.
Decode as base64, or something else that could easily handle binary.
Convert byte data to string (for editory perpousos - I won't be editing bytes, I'll be doing custom encoding but that's irrelevant for this test)
Convert back to a byte string/array (with .encode(), probably)
Write to file.
I do this, yet the output has been altered... Though I haven't touched anything..
It's so enfuriating.. x.x18
I just found out that my co-student was working for 3 days on editing id's to a excel sheet with 500000 rows because she didn't know that you could just drag the cells. She was really mad beacause i told her she needed to do that as a joke. Feels bad tho. Funny but bad ....1
Does anyone have a suggestion for a good video editing program for Linux?
Searching the internet did not get me any useful results...15
"best [distro/ide/laptop/buttplug] for web development?"
So you are.... You are basically asking whats the best for editing text files?12
Full stack programmer on the recruitment post vs reality

Learning to use Lightroom,
The hardest part about editing photos is to not oversaturated them even when you feel warmer colours look better . I guess I overdid it
P.S. that’s me in the picture enjoying the sky pissing on my face (sarcasm intended)5
You give client spreadsheet for mass editing. They put "same as above" in many places. Angry that same as above now appears on the website.4
Ladies and gentlemens, my everyday workstation.. at work.
i5-5300 2,30Ghz, 8gb ram and 128ssd. Bloated external screen with low resolution and even lower colour saturation.
Running VM, handling big as images, editing and a tiny bit coding.. and they wonder why I'm asking for a new setup..

A few years ago I was working in a startup where the designer was given way too much decisional power (he was friends with the owner).
He had a tendency to keep editing parts of the design during the development phases, so when we had to work on a new big section of the application, before starting the tront-end development, I asked him to confirm that the mockups were final.
He confirmed the design was final and was not going to change.
10 days later, of couse, he sent a new, completely different, set of mockups. The startup owner expected the new design to be implemented without moving the deadline.
(I left that startup shortly after. The issues with the designer were just the tip of the iceberg.
The owner tried to keep a payment hostage to "force" me to sign a new 1 year contract. He backtracked when he thought I was recording the call. I got my payment and left.)1
Overwhelmed by a shitty codebase? Use the boy scout rule and leave the code you're editing a little better than you found it.
Worked wonders for me when I realized I could spend literal months refactoring and desperately needed a systematic approach.
Little by little that rotting house of cards will turn into something okay. It's a nice feeling looking back after a couple of months and see what you've done to make things better.
Also, make sure to remember the cost of wrestling with hurried legacy solutions in your estimates as well. Just adjust the level of bluntness depending on your work environment: admitting that things can/need to be improved can be unpleasant for some to hear even though it's true.5
I got this message 30 minutes ago. I do edit videos but, only for my YT channel. So, should I respond?12
@dfox it is on my mind to rant about editing my rants but now i lost the opportunity to rant about it, latest update: edit your rants and comments. cool 😎 👍4
I love that my boss can swing by when I'm editing my dotfiles, or chatting in Telegram CLI, or browsing Reddit in rtv, and he thinks I'm hard at work because it's the terminal.2
Ok. FUCK MySQL Workbench.
Most of our products built on MySQL and we just had enough of the tools that we are using for our mysql databases...
We decided to make our own tool :)
If it goes well, we plan to open source it. Would you guys be interested in it?
We planned the following features:
1. Schema editing
2. Schema versioning
3. Update/downgrade script generation to move easily between schema versions
4. Manual/auto sync
5. Might include our own replication solution too...
What do you think?10
I created a windows 10 wallpaper for the fun of it, insult my editing skills as you wish :)

I'm a stupid twat. Spent at least three hours today, all wasted. I had to update a user manual and change all the branding for a system I've licencesd and going to resell to my dumb clients. There was no original to work from only a pdf. Managed to convert it to word but all the formatting was fucked. So set up some heading and paragraph styles, proper header and footer and auto generate TOC's. I did all this without actually reading it, thought I'd get the formatting and branding out of the way first. So after all that I started the job of editing it and updating it. Quickly realised that PDF I converted was for a different but similar system. Tommorow is Groundhog Day.
I was paying GTA Vice City when i was in high school and wanted to make a game
I started learning Graphics, Video Editing, 3D and Coding for that
One thing led to another, now I'm a Frontend Lead
I was wondering how people can hate other people. That was weird to me, but now I unterstand these people.
I begin to hate people, too.
Not only because they are stupid, but also because of their irresponsibility, ignorance and incompetence.
Here I am taking my time to finish a school project which is to create a video about stock shares etc.
I did the planning, did the editing of the audio files, put my own part (imagea and own audio) to it and right now I am editing it.
One guy from our group is being a bitch and does not record his voice to a few documents which will barely take him 3 minutes. I did 8-9 minutes of talking, for the records.
Because of that dip shit, I am wasting endless time waiting for him to get his shit done. I need to create the video. I have a personal life, too.
I gave him a deadline, because he was procrastinating. If he does not make it to this time, I am going to record his part on my own and give myself all of his credits. Done.4
My worst dev experience was my first software as freelance...
1 month codding
When delivering the app the client didnt want it anymore...
Two years latter the client calls me because he had a problem... Merging hundreds of access 97 databases... Exactly what my software did (besides editing, filters and remove duplicates)
Told him I got mad, deleted the source code and was already working on a company...
He had to pay for a software company to do the same 10 times the cost4
Remember how CPU speeds stopped mattering after they reached 2GHz? (except for gaming and media editing of course).
I believe Internet speeds have also met that zero marginal utility point at 15Mbps.
I felt no difference when mine went up gradually from 15Mbps to 75Mbps now. (Thanks ACT, India)14
!Rant && !Believe what I am seeing 😓
Just downloaded Android studio 3 to give kotlin a go to find out their designer is soooo much better now, I tried editing an activity with constraint layout and many elements inside without a single freez 😨5
This fucking Adobe piece of shite.
I get it, you probably make one of the best editing software available out there. But if you could stop rearranging all the icons and features in your UI, that would be fucking great so that I don't have to search on the internet for hours to find out a simple feature.3
I finally finished what I considered the biggest challenge thus far: rant editing, deleting and also favoriting/unfavoriting. You can already post rants through my app as well! I am getting so damn close to being done with the basic things. After that - notifications!3
VIM! ViM! vim! Vi Improved! Emacs (Wait ignore that one). What’s this mysterious VIM? Some believe mastering this beast will provide them with untold mastery over the forces of command line editing. Others would just like to know, how you exit the bloody thing. But in essence VIM is essentially a command line text editor at heart and it’s learning curve is so high it’s a circle.
There’s a lot of posts on the inter-webs detailing how to use that cruel mistress that is VIM. But rather then focus on how to be super productive in VIM (because honestly I’ve still not got a clue). This focus on my personal journey, my numerous attempts to use VIM in my day to day work. To eventually being able to call myself a novice.
My VIM journey started in 2010 around the same time I was transiting some of my hobby projects from SVN to GIT. It was around that time, that I attempted to run “git commit” in order to commit some files into one of my repositories.
Notice I didn’t specify the “-m” flag to provide a message. So what happened next. A wild command line editor opened in order for me to specify my message, foolish me assumed this command editor was just like similar editors such as Nano. So much CTRL + C’ing CTRL + Z’ing, CTRL + X’ing and a good measure of Google, I was finally able to exit the thing. Yeah…exit it. At this moment the measure of the complexity of this thing should be kicking in already, but it’s unfair to judge it based on today’s standards of user friendly-ness. It was born in a much simpler time. Before even the mouse graced the realms of the personal computing world.
But anyhow I’ll cut to the chase, for all of you who skipped most of the post to get to this point, it’s “:q!”. That’s the keyboard command to quit…well kinda this will quit the program. But…You know what just go here: The Manual. In-fact that’s probably not going to help either, I recommend reading on :p
My curiosity was peaked. So I went off in search of a way to understand this: VIM thing. It seemed to be pretty awesome, looking at some video’s on YouTube, I could do pretty much what Sublime text could but from the terminal. Imagine ssh’ing into a server and being able to make code edits, with full autocomplete et al. That was the dream, the practice…was something different. So I decided to make the commitment and use VIM for editing one of my existing projects.
So fired the program up and watched the world burn behind me. Ahhh…why can’t I type anything, no matter what I typed nothing seemed to appear on screen. Surely I must be missing something right? Right! After firing up the old Google machine, again it would appear there is this concept known as modes. When VIm starts up it defaults to a mode called “Normal” mode, hitting keys in this mode executes commands. But “Insert” entered by hitting the “i” key allows one to insert text.
Finally I thought I think I understand how this VIM thing works, I can just use “insert” mode to insert text and the arrow keys to move around. Then when I want to execute a command, I just press “Esc” and the command such as the one for saving the file. So there I was happily editing my code using “Insert” mode and the arrow keys, but little did I know that my happiness would be short lived, the arrow keys were soon to be a thorn in my VIM journey.
Join me for part two of this rant in which we learn the untold truth about arrow keys, touch typing and vimrc created from scratch. Until next time..
sometimes, editing bad code, makes me wanna meet the the person who wrote it. just to see the sick mind responsible for the piece of shit im looking at!2
If you're using the adwaita-dark gtk theme, you may have noticed that the text entry fields on lots and lots of sites make your text almost impossible to read, using firefox. You can fix that by creating/editing the, "widget.content.gtk-theme-override" key(in about:config), setting it to "Adwaita" and restarting firefox.5
Just got an email from the boss asking if me and the other dev on a project have been liaising with each other before editing code because changes were being lost and over written.
Wouldn't it be great if here were some way to manage collaborations and control versions of files? *git*
The company is so reluctant to use git and do things properly.
-Writes a function that I'm going to schedule for django.
-works in development.
-adds it to production cron using django-crontab
-spends 3 hours editing code, searching for similar problems and reading documentations but find nothing wrong and it's still not working.
-maybe it's django-crontab so I decide to just write a custom management command and call it through cron.
-still not working.
-calls function using what I'm telling cron to do.
-adds logs to cron command (sorry for not making it earlier)
-mfw the code is not working because I imported 'patterns' in urls.py which has been deprecated since django 1.8
Rewrote half of a fucking paper. Also, some moron has been mis-editing my last work on this. They managed to write barely-english sentences in the middle of a well-thought-out section and break it completely. I'm glad last time I wrote these stuff I winged it, but if anyone gives me shit about stuff I carefully wrote right now, or edit it into rubbish, I will literally burn this paper to ashes.5
One time in college we had an android project for one of our courses. Then this one member of my team didn't want to install Android studio because he didn't want to install any unnecessary software and libraries to his machine. We wanted to do his part editing directly in github.5
I keep seeing more people here working with asm and highly constrained hardware.
So I am curious. Does anyone else here actually use ed for their text editing needs?3
Fairly new to Linux, read that vim is a neat editor but hard to learn, good for script editing and such, but why use it over a language specific editor or something like VS Code?24
while editing a config file if i accidently delete a / i use ctrl+z to undo it.
as if using / on my keyboard to fix the error will somehow make it worse. #ocd2
>Why is chrome making my computer turn off all of a sudden?
<Boss, you have a quite old iMac with fully updated chrome, which is known to eat RAM. PLus, you've been using that computer as a donkey to do video editing, even tho it's not made for that (looking at the stats), and you have your home folder on an external hard drive, plus like 10 other apps always active, including premiere, illustrator, airmail (with 12k emails always loaded smh), slack on 2 workspaces and at LEAST 12 chrome tabs on some of the heaviest websites
>Mmh... yeah you're right, I'm kinda asking for it2
TLDR; I was editing the wrong file, let's go to bed.
We have this huge system that receives data from an API endpoint, does a whole bunch of stuff, going through three other servers, and then via some calculation based on the data received from the UI, and data received from the endpoint, it finally sends the calculated fields to the UI via websocket.
Poor me sitting for over 4 hours debugging and changing values in the logic file trying to understand why one of the fields ends up being null.
Of course every change needs a reboot to all the 4 servers involved, and a hard refresh of the UI.
I even tried to search for the word null in that file, but to no avail.
After scattering hundreds of console logs, and pulling my hair out, I found out that I am editing the wrong file.
I guess it's time for some sleep.1
Dear boss, please give me a more challenging project. I am sick and tired of editing someone else’s HTML and CSS which doesn’t even go through a build process and the JS is basically Jquery. It would be better if no one else can get into my codebase and the project has no relations or anywhere near our flagship product. Please involve some sysadmin tasks that I really want to learn. For front end I want to use React , boss. Or at least ES(6)=>. NodeJS would be nice too but I’m not fussy with the backend language. Even PHP would do. Please give me a genuine problem to solve, anything mathematical, machine learning would be awesome! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻1
I turn into a 2 yrs old whenever I'm editing a 3D model.
From the perspective that I want to throw everything in sight and my response to everything is "No!". 🙄4
Our robotics final project requires that we add all sorts of multimedia aids to our documentation - my video editing skills are sub-par 😂
An hour passes. Still stuck on the damn bug! Then I suddenly realise I've been editing the wrong file #fml
I’ve got to build an app in 3 weeks that handles basic image editing and async requests. It’s gotta support both iOS and Android.
It’s also gotta scan barcodes.
What should I use?
Try and cram it through in native java/Kotlin and swift?
Something I’m missing?7
A few months back, my Dad's friend (mother of a 10th grade student) asked me for help on her daughter video editing school assignment because I study 'computers'.
Me on the outside: 'I am sorry, I wouldn't be of much help here as I have zero experience with video editing'
Me on the inside: 'I am sorry, I design and develop software. I am not an all-knowing genius that knows everything even remotely connected to computers.'1
When you don't know if you should start a developer tutorial channel. I have a good mic, 4 years dev experience and good editing skill. Should i?10
Please and please, if you cannot take the time out to create new classes do not copy and paste another without editing it properly! I noticed you do a find and replace and then leave 50% of variable names un-edited because all errors are gone. I am begging you in the name of Zeus edit your shit!
Here is one dick head:1
I'm amazed so many people have "one" favourite editor. I have a whole bunch depending on the situation:
- IntelliJ whenever dealing with Java files
- VS whenever dealing with .NET
- VS code whenever dealing with Salesforce
- Notepad++ when just opening "any old file" to do some quick editing (never been won over to Sublime)
- vim when needing to edit files in a console environment
- nano as the second choice in the above situation when vim isn't available
- Emeditor when needing to open / work with very large files
I've never even remotely found a "one size fits all" solution.3
It takes so much effort to put a quality video on YouTube.
3. Recording ( screen record while doing the hands on of the topic, drawing concepts on whiteboard + voice over )
Work is fun when every time I finish editing a project I have to wait 30 mins for it (solution) to compile :D2
I think all the frequent editing of AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS in my younger years prepared me well for webpack.config.js and package.json.
Editing java files on server for deployment.
Deployed. Found major issue.
Don't have time. Editing source code on server changed if else
Rebuild and deploy.
Now push from server to repo and pull locally...
So I do web development and video editing.. i am also a Linux user but I want a change. could someone suggest a distro with decent support and also a desktop environment with a very clean flat ui?11
Open droid edit, ignore big ads at the bottom.
Open file, make small changes.
Login to azure web app
Navigate to wwroot
Switch to device files
Go to .deployment folder
Is it efficient? Fuck no.
Notepad++ style editing on the go? Fuck yes3
So on a PowerBuilder app I worked on last year (I know right...), suddenly the business users were reporting that they couldn't edit some of their prices! When they clicked save, the screen would refresh and lose their work.
We had recently upgraded the system to allow them to enter hundreds of prices at a time, much more than there had ever been. But that code wasn't anywhere near this part!
Tracking this down was really fun... By great fortune, I discovered the row the users were editing was the 99th row in the DataWindow. As it turned out, in the distant past (this is PowerBuilder, after all) the returns code "99" had been used as a flag to mean "cancel/refresh the screen".
I of course offered to "fix it right", but the powers that be wanted it fixed cheaply, so we just changed the flag to "9999". 😬1
Anybody tried developing a chrome extension? I'm bloody lost, with LITERALLY trying to get a goddamn Hello World.
This is worse than when I tried editing in Vim.
Or worse yet, Java.3
when locally editing code but Web is not changing, then adding die() in the beginning, and still not changing
then delete the code and webpage still not changing...
after a lot of cursing, you release you were refreshing on server!!!!!2
Too lazy to come up with a better name...
Yea... the app still works...
5th time editing the crawler logic... 2 years now?13
In a recent venture, I had to use an office suite and a photo editing software regularly. As a Linux user, I tried using Libreoffice and gimp. But that was just a mess. My other project partners were using MS office. Format, image alignments, fonts.. everything was messed up. Same happened wih the gimp. I know Photoshop, learnt while studying. Gimp was just no match to that. I was forced to go back to Windows. And I was surprised that the latest MS office and Adobe Creative Cloud were excellent. MS office was smoother and faster than Libreoffice.
I love linux. I have tried all the major distros and I love all of them. But I would still say that Linux is not the best option for day to day non-dev tasks. Whatever Richard Stallman and the Open Source Community say, Linux lack good softwares, at least some good document, photo, audio and video editing softwares.8
Something isn't working, I play around with the code, and try all possible things in the code. Still it doesn't work. Spend a couple of hours reading each and every line but still in vain. Finally, I find out that I was editing the wrong file (same file at another location) the whole time!! This happened a couple of times when I was a newbie, one of my most annoying mistakes.
Lesson learnt: Now when anybody asks me to debug his code, I first edit/add a print statement to make sure this is the correct file. I thought I was being skeptical, but it has saved me a lot of time (mostly interns do this rookie mistake).2
So I gave i3 a try today via Manjaro i3 (don't have time to get a config of my own from scratch, would rather have a working setup which I can fiddle around with).
It's pretty...good actually. Doesn't work quite as well as I'd hoped because of my laptop's small screen, but still nice. Works well with my Blender and editing workflow too, so that's a plus.
After I'd spent an hour fixing audio and WiFi issues, of course, because Linux, but then that's just part of the fun amirite4
Linux has been around since back when dinosaurs punched holes in cards, but for some reason it still takes a few hours of googling and error debugging to do something as basic as connect to a wpa2-enterprise wifi network.
What the fuck? Where's the "connect to any standard work or school wifi network" command line utility distributed with all os flavors? Why can't I just put in a username and password and be done with it instead of sudo editing networking adapter configuration files manually?2
New colleague comes to present himself. Sees me editing using key bindings, multiple buffers showing in Emacs, bash scripts running in separate terminal...
"I have no idea what you do around here, but I'm sure your a pro"
Seems like a smart guy to me.1
I just reallized I've done so much photo editing that I made a few tools for it in different apps.
So this morning in a flash of insight, I've made a single app that consolidates them all...
Basically it's just a window that opens all the others by referencing those projects... That was probably the fastest I've ever written an app... other than Hello World.
I can't tell if i am lazy, efficient, or organized... (i couldnt put this in the tag because of the commas)1
Having a crack at switching from vim to emacs, my understanding of the major differences are as follows
* departure from modal editing
* emacs provides a more comprehensive environment
* More powerful scripting capability,
* my pinky will complain,
* I might just about to enter a new church
Any advice for a newb? Hoping there's a few of you out there17
Some weeks back I mentioned (in a comment) my small program capable of editing the tags in audio files based on the filename.
Today, I had some spear time and implemented it in Go (the original version was Ruby).
For people that are interested, here is a link to the repo: https://github.com/SirWindfield/...
Any help/feedback is appreciated!
I promised someone to mention him if I get to publish it. But I forgot his user name :(9
Why is it so difficult to copy paste in an editor which is considered as one of the most sophisticated editor ? I use VIM for almost everything except for copy pasting . All those internal buffer ..external buffer things are complicating things..
And the sad part is ..once i was editing a bash script using sublime ..I pressed escape :wq .. and tried executing that for a long time .. I was clueless for sometime after which i realised i didnt save the document..
If at all VIM had easy ways to copy paste..😥8
Company had problematic client projects that each client has a bucket load of change requests. Company doesn't know how to say "No" to them. Company can't afford to pay the subvendors for the changes and the subvendors aren't willing to do them for free.
I went in, reverse engineer the shit out of each application, database, system, documented my own findings, changed according to each client request. This involves editing tables in MSSQL, rerouting PHP files, adding field and validations in C#, passing parameters in VB to Crystal Report, and managed every change request into my own personalize ticket system (that the company does not have).
Saved the company, everyone was grateful. A couple of months later, the company hasn't paid my salary on time, I left like a boss.
They're in shit again and need my help. Haha!
I was almost 2 days in a task to find the reason of a bug in a client's process, then I found something really weird, that made all the team go to my desk to see wtf was happening, then a guy says, "wait, this was not supposed to be in there, I was editing this process in other environment (he knew it because of the number)" , what did we discover? Someone (they haven't told me who), was supposed to put a file in a folder, just it, but the motherfucker did put the file in the wrong environment folder. I lost 2 days chasing a bug that never existed '-'.
What the actual fuck is a "Happiness Engineer"? A client asked me to add a line of code on wp-config.php (WordPress) so that Jetpack will work:
define("OPTION", "setting for this option");
I added it at the top just after <?php. Somehow, the service isn't working so I asked the client to get in touch with Jetpack. Jetpack Happiness Engineer replies back that the location of the code is wrong and should be above:
/* That's all, stop editing! Happy publishing. */
and informed the client that Jetpack is working flawlessly.
I put back the line where I originally placed it and Jetpack is still working. Motherfu3
Who made that shit? and whhhyyyyy?
I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out why the code file, a mac using co-worker sent me, does not compile.
Intlij did not help, np++ did not help, textmate did not help!
Only hex editing the file worked!
kill it with fire!7
I FUCKING HATE JAVA
Wee need to do a schoolproject with JavaFX and TableViews. The editing of the tables works grate and is also displayed after commiting. But wen i take the data from the TableViews there is still the old one...9
So I just found out that multi-line editing can copy a matrix of letters and paste it on other lines. This is amazing. Imagine being the person who thought of this feature.1
Editing an excel formula in notepad, copy it back to excel and excel says "you can only use 8192 characters in an excel formula" really?
Ohu Excel I hate you!4
I have gotten so used to editing files in vim that I invariably type vim commands into editors which don't use them (which is pretty much every other one.)
I can't count the number of times I've sent ZZ or :q to a colleague in Slack or typed /word in an email or even D when I was trying to delete a line.
Then I spend time outside of vim and find myself using the cursor keys or mouse to move around.
Curse my slow code-switching brain and faster muscle memory!
Does anyone have a linux compatible video editing software to recommend? Could be a paid one, I just want a good native alternative.11
is it me or you also make a new file of a working code just make and see how new way it will work but end up editing the original file 😭1
@DFox @trogus found a bug- not sure how easy it will be to fix... if you change your username, mentions in rants and comments still have the old username which will be confusing for people trying to figure out who the mention is for.
Is it possible that on editing a username, all mentions in all comments and rants are renamed as well?12
While developing on xcode, I will be spending more time on waiting for the xcode to respond to my actions than actually writing code, especially when editing the storyboard, FUCK APPLE!8
First time video editor, check !
Download and install, check !
Try to edit video..
Hmmm.. not obvious controls..
No trouble, watch how to video !
Which then says, this is how you do it, without telling you what keys or icons to press !
Why are these things always so difficult..6
How competent I feel today experiencing the WebDev world?
I've nearly gone insane editing my CSS code, not noticing any changes at all on my website whilst spamming F5.
Luckily, before I was beginning to plan my suicide, I realized that I was editing SCSS the entire time, having my auto-compiler turned off.5
From long Using Visual Studio Code for Programming.
Why i love
plugins available like linter, git lense
Best for small web app projects.
And Favourite IDE, intellij Idea
For writing java i use as
it can easily generate getter setters
and build process.
best for java.
last but not the least
because most of the devops configuration, requires to be done via terminal only and i often use nano.
it is good for shell scripting,
that is all....2
I can see the love for VS Code as a whole, or Codium (my main in that side)
But dear me, any moderately big project will make this bad boy choke the fuck out even on a powerful workstation. Atom is also out of the question for that, and does anyone even uses brackets? Elektron based apps tend to choke like this.
Thus, for simple editing tasks I have preferred Sublime, Notepad++ and Vim, Vim is always there for me.
But I am wondering about one more:
Anyone here with experience on using Emacs on large as fuck projects? how was the experience?
I have only used Emacs on small shit and it works fine.14
tldr: Fuck Adobe Premiere
What the flying fuck.
I have a school project together with a friend and decided to do a video. Not only do we now only have one fucking day left, because the teacher decided we dont need time or anything, but I have to learn video editing software, record clips and create the video withing one fucking day.
I've downloaded Premiere because I have a 7 day trial left and had Creative Cloud on my PC and WHAT THE FUCK kind of fucked up bullshit software is this human compiled piece of shit?! I needed to google how to add text and edit it because adding text gives you absolutely nothing, you get no possibility to edit the text in any way, except the content. After googling for 10 minutes because I have the newest version and they changed the text tool, I found out that you need to go to another tab... of which there is 7 and all have such telling names like: "Effects" and "Compose"...
I needed to go to "Effects" BECAUSE WHY THE FUCK NOT, TEXT SURE LOOKS LIKE AN EFFECT TO ME! Then I wanted to align it to the right so its on 50% of the screen. You fucking cant, I've tried and looked for an hour the only possibility you have is to align it to the center or just throw it somewhere. The snapping didn't even work correctly. So I tried to do something else because I was ready to punch a kitten.
A box. A box thats black. A box thats black and thats aligned to the... FUCK YOU, YOU CANT ALIGN THIS BOX.
I cant align a box...
They dont even give me the possibility to...
But I can align the text BOX, not even the FUCKING TEXT itself...
This is the worst program I've EVER had to use. I'm fucking mad and this fucking project can FUCK ITSELF.19
Group assignment: writing a own Java logger component in a group of four, using nothing else than Java SE libraries, Maven and Jenkins. The software must be able to substitute the logger component without recompilation, just by editing the config.xml (setting jar file path and fully qualified class name of the logger).
I asked around on Slack which group is ready for a component exchange, so that we could test the switch. I found another group and I started doing some testing.
Then I got a `java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/log4j/Logger`. I got in touch with my peer from the other group and asked him, if they've been using log4j. Apparently they did, so I told him that the assignment was to write a logger of one's own, not just using log4j. Then he told me: "Uh, ok, I'm going to tell the guy responsible for the logger part about that..."
Notepad++. It's good for editing multiple types of files with syntax highlighting. Also doubles as a place for jotting down notes/thoughts without worrying about saving them.1
I: I see, this web contain user functions, like registrations, product adding, details editing and many other stuff. Can i ask one question?
I: Why designer did not designed those elements?
Client: You can do it better directly from the code.
Should i be mad or delighted? I have no idea.
Someone else hates his notebook because of the fucking low battery capacity? From 100% to 7% in about 40 minutes and all I did was editing a Python script and tested it using the bash..
Can't wait until I get my new laptop3
IPhone speech to text has come a long way. Definitely has improved. Real-time dictation rather than batching it.
I am currently doing approximately 50 percent of my rants by voice. In fact the rank you are reading I did by voice.
You can easily do punctuation such as a period, new paragraph, new line, caps and lower case. The speech recognition is excellent even with my New York accent and it learns the more you use it. Rarely does it get a word wrong.
Editing still has to be done manually and is a pain but that may change as dragon already allows you to do in-line editing. iOS speech to text has already surpassed dragon in some facets.
I do have to press the add new and post buttons at this Time to post my rants. But that may change as the enhanced dictation on the map allows you access to specific commands.
I will keep you informed of progress and I will be testing on android over the next few days as well.4
I've been editing sound effects, animations, image assets, creating things from scratch if I don't have what I need, all while I am hired as a software engineer.
We are supposedly an interactive contents company, while we have only two designers (none of which specializes in software design) for half a dozen projects, no sound engineer, and no animator.
I've been using Krita and Audacity as much as VS Code these days - my hobby skills I never thought would use in a professional environment. I wonder how did my predecessors work, surely not every software engineer also happens to be a hobbyist artist.2
So this happened a few days ago
I was working on a module assigned by my senior, and was the sole developer on that module. Just when I was breaking my head to get a bash script correct (was writing a bash script for first time), my senior comes and looks at my messy script and goes "No, no, no, no that's not how you do it. "
Takes the keyboard and starts editing my script opened in vim.
Did some cool restructuring, taught me a few things about bash and while talking to me kept the keyboard back at its place.
I keep my hands on keyboard while talking to him and press
And as I pressed Enter my face went purple/blue thinking this is not good. 😨
(I have a habit to quit as I had almost never edited and saved a vim file before)
And he sees that face and says
No nothing. Everything's cool.2
Opinions on the current gen iPad mini/air (apart from "reeeee Apple")? iPad 4 was a brilliant device, loved it, looking for a similar thing. Can't find any decent Android tablet and honestly, not sure if I want Android at all.
I basically want a companion device with superb battery life, a larger screen than my phone, and good and useful apps (used Garageband, Magellan, and Voice Synth quite a bit on the old iPad). Will be going to college in a few months so something useful for carrying around too that's more portable than my laptop.
Considered a Celeron laptop, but it's basically useless for anything but text editing and basic browsing.9
So I'm TAing this database class and we constantly need to use shell to edit text. I am hosting the workshop with another student, who is a vim user and I am an emacs user. During one workshop he wrote down the commands for editing and quitting vim, and I simply told them control x and controls s, then control x and control c. And the stdents are fucking complaining that is too many commands? Like, wtf? And this week when we are holding the workshop and we need to edit something so he said just open your favourite editor and a girl was like vim, vim, vim , the same girl who complained emacs is too many commands. Like I'm the total loser using emacs there. Get your shit together people omfg you brainless followers. No offense to vim users, this is just personal.1
I can't tell if I'm in majority or minority on hating vim. I just use nano for CLI editing and some better GUI editor with, well, GUI.
Hacky code post:
property var value: if(editing || !editing) function(othervalue)
I am coding in a property system that only updates an expression if a variable involved emits a signal. Well the function won't get called unless I change a value. I also want to "value" to be updated when editing changes. I also want it to update even if editing doesn't change. So the or-ing of the state of editing.
The result is the function gets called when object is initialized. Then when the editing flag changes it gets updated again. The workaround of doing this is much worse and requires more hacky code. So I am resigned myself to just or-negating the editing value.10
Visual Studio Code, nano for terminal editing, don't know how to use Vim (I like using my mouse thanks)4
Trying to type in a normal text editor after 7-8 hours of editing with vim is the same feeling as spinning yourself on the spot until you can’t stand anymore then trying to walk in a strait line.jhw3
Which project should I finish first?:
1. The history teacher will give me excelent mark for filming and editing a history project (i have half the footage)
2. The side project that i love
3. Posting a math project in a website3
This guy was editing a code file but compiling and running a differnet version with the same name in a different location and kept asking around not knowing why nothing was changing1
The first time I accidentally activated multiple cursors(multiline editing feature) in my editor I thought this was a bug rather than a feature and was trying to figure out a way to get the cursor back to normal.
Few years down the line this feature has improved my coding speed a lot and I just laugh at myself remembering the first time I used it 😂
P.S. Screenshot attached for reference9
Got a new Mac from work, wanted to do some magazine editing so downloaded Scribus.
I begin to panic because most of the top toolbar icons were not visible. I figured it was bugged.
Okay, calm, it's still vaguely usable with shortcuts and menu. But damn this sucks.
They just haven't adapted the program to work with system wide dark theme.
That, that would be why.5
Classmate got me today to write cmake.
I mean after the 2 years of editing it in android repos to fix shit i hated it.
But i must say its pretty good tool.
Also i may have written it in VIM.
Dont worry NANO team. I wont leave you. Im still proud user of NANO.4
is there a google docs for ides? like, real time editing where you can collab while you are?
i think that would be cool.
"Dear" tech lead... Editing Cloud Function with GCP's online IDE is not equivalent to versioning your code. Use a proper VCS dammit. It's fucking sprint 3 already... Ugh3
VSCode for C#, Python, Web dev
Sublime for big boy files
Nano for editing things in terminal
And VS if I need it2
So I use 4 differents setups in my life nowadays
My main PC at my home, which is on Windows 7
My PC at work, which is on Windows 8.1
My Cloud PC for gaming and video editing, on Windows 10
My travelling PC, which is on Ubuntu.
The Ubuntu, it's okay, no problem. But trust me, that's a real pain in the ass to switch from one OS to another.4
Microservices in real life:
You have 4 different project opened in IDE simultaneously editing all of them to make something to work.
All projects share same db.
Basically this is monolith but splitter to different git repos.
Communicating one another via http calls or directly altering shared db tables.
Everyone is happy until solution goes to production then :
Solution doesn't scale because db is a bottleneck.
Services can be unavailable for 1-2s so some processes are left in unfinished state forever, because everyone assume 99,9% SLA means it always available and http calls will never fail.
Http calls take time.2
Installed on my 2x 980 TI SLI the newest Nvidia Driver 384.76.
Played games on it and some Video Editing. Noticed that I have bad laggs and checked clocks.
Wow clocks were locked at half the max Output. Checked if I can do anything to increase it, nope it's locked at half the Performance.
Tried to install previous Driver, install failed. Went 2 Drivers back and installed the 382.33.
Everything worked again.
WTF are the guys at NVIDIA coding while being drunk?? How the fuck can you lock the powertarget of the GPU at half the Performance and after 4 days not releasing a hotfix? Are they testing this shit even or forcing it into production?
Currently NVIDIA has really crappy drivers and with every update it gets even worse.
And the only option you got is GPU's from NVIDIA and AMD. And Vega is not even released yet.
Hope that AMD will beat the shit out of NVIDIA...5
so my friend and I are canvassing NLEs for our guys at the Post Production squad in our project (we were in charge in infrastructure). We looked at Premiere since it's kinda ok until we found Black Magic Design's Da Vinci Resolve.
First of all, I was suprised with the price. 299 for the Studio Version? Holy fuck, that's cheap as hell! Then there's a free as in free software version which has the core editing features with 1080p rendering. So we grabbed that and kinda suprised it requires postgres but as seeing Resolve having collab and render queues, it makes sense.
Installed them on the PCs the postprods gonna use, they were amazed. We literally saved 500 bucks for an NLE. When they asked how much is it. Our reply was:
and there was silence...
"And it's also 299 bucks for the cooler version".
And silence still ensued.
Guess our guys wasted alot of money on a pipeline that is cheap as hell but more jam-packed than any other NLE found in the market.
Props to you BlackMagic Design.

So lately, I've been screen recording when I am working on my projects just for fun. I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (Bionic Beaver) and SimpleScreenRecorder for screen recording. I'm using VidCutter for video editing but for some reason, it's giving me some errors and not able to save my edited videos. I don't want to do heavy video editing. I just want something like Windows movie make if some of you remember that.4
Imagine you decide to spend a few hours to contribute to an open-source project wiki/documentation that hasn't been updated in years, to actually make it useful for new users, and then the maintainers start expecting further modification and corrections from you before pulling the PR, like you work for them, instead of just fucking pulling it in and then editing what they want themselves. It's just another example of how stupid and nonsense the open-source community can be.3
What's your guys opinion about what to choose between a recent mac or the 2018 dell XPS 13?
I've been planning to get one of those for a while now, maily to use for college, work and coding (+ photo editing a lot).
But spending so much money, I want to make the good choice, and I'm still not sure.. I've never used macOS, but it seems interesting, but a bit scary too.
What and why would you guys choose?14
I was writing some JS files, and each time I tried to run them, the browser gave me errors on multiple lines. After looking at the source code, editing tons of lines and still not getting any result, I opened the source through the Chromium console and noticed it was different from mine. I thought there was a problem saving the file. Checked folder permissions, restarted Atom and Chromium, but still nothing.
What happened? I had opened the backup file in Chromium. 😩3
Started learning php from youtubeversity.. then started teaching kids php, helps you alot too (to teach)..
Then I started at the University.. eh, its easy mode, when you already learned object oriented programming ..
Youtube, stackoverflow, looking through other people's code, editing it, breaking it, fixing it and various tutorials really helps alot.
Still where I get my information, not the University. But it depends on which type of person you are2
You should write comments in your code, and in case of Perl you must write comments in your code.
I've done some DNS zone editing stuff using Perl's magic around 4 years ago and now I have no fucking idea what's going on in there. It's on production DNS server since then, no problems so far...
VS Code and SourceTree are two of the most used tool by me this year.
SourceTree helps me visualise the git commit history and branches more than git log can.
VS Code, on the other hand helps me with all the short code editing stuff and sometimes even helps when I don't want to open a full fledged IDE for the project. I have setup my own Icon themes for VS Code and even created watchers for files. Can't do this much on Webstorm so easily.
Constantly torn between editing live and taking the time to edit in dev, then push live.
fast/risky or slow/safe
I'll take the red pill please.3
All those times you were editing your MySpace profile you didn't realize you were flirting with a 6 figure income did you?
Editing rants i wrote more than five minutes past.
Edited on my Huawei P8 mini lite with dual sim slot, golden color with 32gb sdcard.3
Currently working a contract for a startup that never finishes the final content editing and organization task so that we can build the last page. They were in such a hurry to start and we 100% delivered everything they asked for on time and at budget. Now that we are centimeters from the finish line, they keep pushing the date back due to the CEO never having time to provide feedback. It’s been months and we cannot get to the final work to earn the final payment.
Not the worst one (which I already shared another week a while back) but definitely not fun.4
A file that I had copied from the company network drive into my own. VS Code to edit the content according to a tutorial provided. IDE doesn't work with the given file, dependencies not resolvable, so let's troubleshoot. Open the file in question inside the IDE, the file contents are those from the tutorial?? Turns out I didn't edit the file on my own system but on the network drive. At least it wasn't a critical file. 🤦
Why does my phone (most phones) record video that are like 100s of MB for just a few minutes? Where as I can download the same video and similar quality but much smaller from Youtube after I upload it?
Originally I used Youtube to stabilize videos but seems they removed that... so now I just want the videos with reasonable size.
Not sure if this was from OpenCamera (I think I have it forcing 4K UHD, prolly don't need); I don't know what the setting is in Camera, can't change it.
But smartphone videos are always huge...15
!rant, but let me tell you this
I wanted to automate some tasks in work, because it started to be a pain in the ass, manually copying those assets took me between 30 - 50 min
let me see, I always wanted to check out python so I started to copy paste some code together, editing it and after a few hours all I know I have a tool which logs in to our work CMS download and unpacks a zip archive, creates a backup from the old files in the repository and moves the files I just downloaded in the repo, I put this in a loop for our twenty languages (websites) and its done
Im amazed, I never picked up a language this easy to use2
This happened last November. I was on my merry way, not using Windows on my laptop. When suddenly a friend asks me to do some heavy video editing work.
And none of the softwares on Linux are as good as Premiere Pro, After Effects etc
Davinci Resolve on Linux has codec issues and is a pain to deal with
Anyway, I boot up windows and somehow it updates itself (I distinctly remember disabling the update service permanently).
So now, it bugs me every fucking minute to reboot.
Luckily I decide to finish my project before rebooting.
Coz as soon as I reboot, it throws me an error saying something like my license key couldn't be verified. One key recovery doesn't help
I have a OEM licensed Windows 10 Home that came with the laptop.
The solutions are to either recover windows, which needs a fucking 11GB download or reinstall Windows (but hey... Lenovo didn't give me a Windows License key. And I have a lot of pre setup folders on the windows drive linked to my Linux, making it a bad choice to wipe that drive). To put the cherry on the top, I have to download a software that Lenovo provides (Windows only) to download that 11GB iso.
Every sane person around me uses Linux (I only used Windows for Video Editing)
Also, living in India, 11GB is a fucking big size to download.... And the software doesn't support interrupted downloads
One more pain in the ass....
So, fuck you Windows. Fuck you Lenovo.
Living happily with elementary OS since then
Never bothered to download the Windows iso6
TL;DR: Free/cheap software for photo editing?
My sis edits her photos with PicsArt and she sometimes takes mini-jobs for a wedding or something. Yet she seeks some "more professional" editing software (for desktop).
Ofc since it is a hobby she doesn't want to buy adobes kit for photoshop yet on the other hand, pirating it is bullshit when earning money with it.
What are your free/cheap one-time-pay photo editing software recommendations? (I already recommended her affinity and gimp but she doesn't really wanna learn gimp)12
I wasn't happy with one of our UI views for editing a database query that consisted of about 50 fields ("editing" being the operative term here, not just viewing. It had to be two-way). Everything was hardcoded and defined manually, with each block of ~10 lines being repeated and mostly identical apart from the occasional double inline field and name of the variable. It had "just ended up that way" over time due to the variable names in the UI being different than the names of the variables that came from the API.
I decided to overhaul it all where I defined the different input components and which fields should be included, then made a function which would generate the page based on these definitions. It was about 500 lines of modularized functions and classes where the class for the actual view was about 50 lines- compared to the 1400+ lines of the previous version.
But, it didn't work. It should, but it "just didn't". There was no error. All I got was a blank, solid white page. I could make a drastic change or try something completely different and I would get the same error, same blank page. API fetch succeeded, value assignments succeeded, the object exists, but if you iterated it it was... empty.
I started getting really discouraged that I had made it too abstract. Maybe I actually made it more complex and unreadable than before. Maybe just hardcoding it all was the better solution after all. Maybe I had gone against KISS and overdesigned it.
I was up pretty late and everyone had gone home. When the last guy left there was that mood where "yeah if I can't make this work we'll just use the current version...".
Turns out I had tried iterating over a property of the set of fields to render, rather than the entire collection. In the old method the variables were a member of an object, but now they were its own object, a change I had made to isolate the set of values which were to be viewed/edited and make them easier to pass back and forth. This member existed since I hadn't cleaned it out yet, but it was empty.
I had been banging my head against this for a whole day and I was ready to admit I had made a mistake and wasted my time before discarding it all, but then I backspaced this one property and the interface went from empty to rendering perfectly and with all functionality intact. I swear god rays were coming out of my screen.
vim...no GUI for Windows for vimRC?? Seriously? gvim is fine as a gui but I want a gui to configure vimrc. Give me sliders and drop down boxes with live visable updates to see what it does right away with common vim options that saves to my vimrc. You know, like a edit ->preferences dialog box with tabs and scroll bars etc that updates the config file for vim directly?
Since there are many here that use it I'd figure sure I'll try it. I used it many years ago for some basics stuff but you've all shown me it can outdo my current note tab++ but holy hell if it isn't shit to configure and set it all up!
I'm not interested in using another editor besides vim after seeing the features now and not interested in a emulator or simulator for vim in another editor (like sublime).
Why don't you just....X? Because. Reasons. I like my GUIs and hate editing text config files then restarting to see what changed. Show me right away dammit...is this a pipedream or does such an app exist?
I'm not looking for a gui for vim...gvim does that just fine, but rather a gui edit preferences options dialog window for vim config file vimrc. Sigh...
Am I dreaming that such an app exists??9
I remember I couple years back in school nobody in my class was really tech-savvy except me and friend... Midway through class the teacher was saving a PowerPoint presentation. But when she was editing the name she started to edit the file extension not know what .pptx meant... The look of dismay me and my friend shared as she did this is one of my greatest memories of school.3
One day (maybe) I will understand how the "bestest IDE in the world" (cit.) can consume over 10Gb of memory just... for being open while not editing any file or anything.
Just in case you're wondering I'm talking about VsCode and yes I know it's not an IDE just in case you want to point out :-) It's just I see more and more people referring to it as it was one.12
Side job - some consulting.
Fucked a clients wordpress website up by editing a saved option thats saved as serialised php data. Tried using the row data from a backup and updating it in the database and it still loads the fallback theme settings. What do?5
Freeware text||code editor for really, really big files? Like let's say, a non-laggy editor capable of editing && viewing 100+ GB text||code||log files... Notepad++ has it's problems there and the license model of UltraEdit doesn't allow a productive use for people not being a millionaire...10
Holy fuck, I just found out about 'set -o vi' which allows editing the readline buffer (the command line buffer) using vi bindings. All that wasted time holy fuck me.1
Hey, i'm just a guy and I develop applications and study at the same time, so I dont work...
In a lot of post I read words like IT jobs, 'editing code in production', could someone please explain me their meaning? Thank you3
never run yaourt -Syu --aur without checking the upgrade list.
reboot-> system doesn't boot -> F**k
reboot (runlevel 3)
discover that nvidia-beta and nvidia-utils mismatch version.
fix it editing pkgbuild of nvidia-beta to install lastest version.
Results: succesfully wasted 25minutes.4
I get the feeling that the only reason people get macs is because windows is horrible now, I mean I’ve heard there’s better editing tools and all but surely they don’t give a huge advantage over editing tools for windows right?27
Another one someone reminded me of when mentioning !important...
When I first started trying to figure out how to customize Wordpress and spent a week trying to figure out how to defeat its reformatting of my styling preferences when editing posts, only to throw it in the corner and ignore it for the next four years.
When you spend most of the time editing you .vimrc instead of the code you supposed to edit. Proper syntax highlighting, plugin management, some useless autocmds that you don't even understand - there is always something to do.2
Me editing some other guys code
Me: "Why is there no comments and why is this so spaghetti, what is this even doing, this thing could be done a lot better bla bla"
Others: "Ah yeah nobody has really dared to touch that before. You're the first one to edit it for some time."
I am thinking about setting up a dual boot (Windows 10 & Mac Os Sierra) on my windows pc for video editing.
I have a Gtx 1070 and an i7 7820HK... I am going to install both OSs on a PciE Ssd.
Not going to overclock it ofc.
Has anyone done that with similar hardware?15
So first reflex in looking what Electron development looks like was making a Hello world app. So it just makes a window saying "Hello world".
Then I proceed to editing the menu, and the quit option is "Goodbye world"... and I realized, or at least I thought... this is a bit... grim?1
Emacs vs Vim? Why not both!
I found a gem of an editor called Spacemacs which combines the power of Emacs and the editing capabilities of Vim! Already replaced intelliJ with spacemacs for my scala and Java projects :)21
What is worse than editing legacy CSS code? Trying to style a page using only no-code / low-code tools. Simplest things like a border only on one side seems nearly impossible or requires hours of trial-and-error with drag-and-drop-modules and their arcane option dialogs.7
Why the fuck would you disable editing comments in a bug report? There goes 2 hours of my fucking life trying to edit two sentences
So my boss wants this mssql reference table editor. Where you point it at references table containing mapping references and it will build a pretty gui for editing the table.... and they want it in like 3 days... so I now either hack something together which is so tightly coupled to the scheme of the table it will require redevelopment each time a new reference table needs adding to be edited or I don't deliver on time and give them a solution which will understand the schema and build the exit view dynamically... I'm starting to hate these stupid deadlines! And to top it all off they justify it with stuff like "it's just an edit view!?!?" Or recently on a basic form I created it was "why do you need to write c#? It's just a HTML form!?"2
Ok, I’ve decided. I have a really old laptop that I love but is only usable for basic surfing and text editing, so I’m gonna put a Linux distro on there to experiment.
Baby’s first Linux!3
Its midnight here...worked for almost 12 hours.... Spend the last 30 mins or so very frustrated and try to figure out why I am not getting desired response. Edited the code again and again... Soon I realize... I am editing local codes, never pushed to live. And Im testing live the whole time....WOW. I am relieved and ashamed at the same time.
When you're a better programmer then your tech teacher (he studied video editing in college so he gets a break) so you're expected to resolve everyone's tech issues while you don't know much yourself so you have to cheat your way through. 😩😩
Good thing I'm the only one not using graphical view in dream weaver. Lol1
After moving from Windows with WinSCP to Mac with FileZilla.. I'm looking forward to the day when I don't have to remember to click a button to confirm the upload after editing a file!
The amount of times I've been changing code and it having no effect, thinking I'm loosing it.. but just forgot to switch back to FileZilla and click the button..9
Just saw a post on linked in of my senior ranting that students are contributing in open source just for a 2 dollar t-shirt and then found himself editing the documentation of repositories for submitting pull requests.8
Just discovered this in visual studio:
shift + alt + ; (select all instances)
shift + alt + . (select next instance)
Better multi-line editing, here we come!2
Not really comp Sci related but
Does anyone know any good audio editing software my friend wants to start working on getting into the audio industry and I as the tech nerd friend want to help him8
Sometimes comments are the only defense between me and completely fucking up my HTML editing. Front-end is scary. 😰😭😢13
Have to upgrade Android app that connects to Bluetooth device and reads data.
I found the app creates new thread every line read from the device's Bluetooth stream, then reuses 1 object for every reading to store the state of the device in Jsonarray, then every thread creates a new thread to upload the data on cloud. Oh, I almost forget that is all working in one UI sctivity, and the same thread that parse the data updates the UI.
Deadline is next Monday and I don't know where to start editing my shit to place MY shit.
Fuck me I guess?
My team has a pathological need to NOT comment! What the fuck!! I think it is because a lot of it is actually magic, so they don't want to admit ignorance. My code is full of "not sure why it works, but breaks when removed." Chunks. That way, when debugging, I actually know what is going on????
I am currently going through and editing someone else's code, and I see code that has no clear purpose, even when removed! Does it do something I don't see??? Does it do nothing?? Fuck!
I've always thought Gedit (Ubuntu text editing software) doesn't have Redo feature as the shortcut Ctrl + Y didn't work. Just realised it's Shift + Ctrl + Z
Lesson - be humble and look at the provided menu items.
So I'm considering buying the latest Asus G14 laptop.
The idea of buying a gaming computer came from my desire to play FS2020 and sim games like Snowrunner.
I'm not sure if I'll play more than 30 mins. I get this incredible guilt and tendency to want to throw up when I try to play games.. :/
Atleast, it would feel nice to know that i can play if i wish to.
Maybe I'll do video editing and 3D designing with laptop.8
Saw code in one of my files at a WIP merge request.
Wanted to add something to fix a bug.
Added, tested and committed.
Wondered why my change wasn't listed in the "changes" section of the merge request.
Turned out that I accidentally edited a file that had the same piece of code where I wanted to add something.
Well, lucky me! If I wouldn't have been editing the "wrong" file accidentally, i probably would have spent hours of debugging only to find out that I am actually in the real wrong file.
For those that do any kind of non-trivial tech blogging, what platform/product/etc would you recommend?
I've found pros and cons to rolling my own (several times) and static generators like Jekyll and Octopress, hosted services like Medium and Ghost, but self-hosted Wordpress is still my pick at the moment. I would be keen to hear what others are using and what advantages you get (e.g. ease of deployment, good editing experience, cheap hosting, lightweight / performant, versatile code embedding and presentation etc)2
There isn't a single good hex editor for the command line.
No, xxd+vim is not a solution when you need to move bytes around or create files from scratch.
I want something that shows me e.g. u32/u64 values at certain locations as I'm editing, color coding bytes by printable or not, etc.
There are lots of *viewers*, and a lot of shitty basic editors that hardly work, but nothing that feels solid and actually usable.
I have been struggling with schema compare and editing anything SQL related in Visual Studio for a couple of weeks now. Cursor constantly flickering, can't click on anything, and actually running the compare results in Visual Studio disappearing in puff of smoke.
I'd put it down to an update, but then this week's update didn't fix it.
Turns out it is a "feature" that Microsoft has been refusing to fix for over a year now, where none of the SQL stuff in VS works properly on a 4k external monitor. And of course I only started trying to use that stuff on my 4k monitor since I have been working from home.
Dragging VS across to the laptop screen solves the problem (and is the Microsoft fix), but I think I now need to visit the optician to get new glasses to see WTF is going on.
Hard to say, as the best tool for one job might not be the best for another.
However between Visual Studio (for big solutions and full .NET development) and Visual Studio Code (for smaller projects, NodeJS and basic file editing) I've not had issues with any projects I've needed to work on.
Do you think is it worth buying macbook air or some other laptop for the same price? I know I can get better specs for that money but I dont game or do a lot of video editing so I Don't need a beast graphic card, I just need it for coding. What do you think?6
So, some friends of mine are going to work on a horror game in Unity2019.
Does anybody have software recommendations for audio editing, shader development or such?
Any advice greatly appreciated.9
I usually run Ubuntu for my daily work. I have dual boot of win7 for Movie editing.
in a week may be I boot win7 once
everyone is talking about win10 being much better is worth upgrading to win10? any drawbacks? any advantages?
thanks in advance11
Am I missing something with VMs? Every time I set one up (either linux guest on win10 host or the reverse), what I get is so slow and laggy that I can barely use it. I always give my VMs about 70% of my ram and at least 4 cpu cores, but still, it ends up being as slow as my grandma's 10 year old laptop.
On the other hand, I've seen people on youtube editing fucking videos in their VMs and the performance was so good that you couldn't even tell if its a vm or not.
This happens both on my desktop (8th gen i7, 16GB ram and ssd) and on my laptop (same cpu, 8GB ram, nvme).
Is virtualbox not good enough, are my devices not powerful enough or am I just too stupid?17
Every now and then I decide to try and use vim, spending hours in customizing it with all the enthusiasm of this world.
When I start editing code on it, I fallback to sublime text.1
Oh how I yearn for Yarn in C++.
Like, seriously. Why, to use a library, do I need to spend 30 minutes building and moving and linking and editing and screaming and beginning all over again? AND WHY IS THERE NO (popular) PACKAGE MANAGER! How are other people supposed to set up an environment to run your code quickly, in confidence they're using the write versions?5
I'm thinking of getting a laptop for both gaming and video editing. I currently am thinking of getting a laptop with either a 7th gen i5 or 8th gen i5. Is there a huge difference in performance between the two generations? Is the 8th gen i5 core worth the extra money?6
All pages are done properly, here comes the client editing the pages, now its messed up... Still my fault 😭😭😭
One question to the devRant gods: why make rants uneditable after five minutes?
I find no reason to this. Even the paid version does not eliminate this restriction.
All social media I know allow editing your posts afterwards (with some, showi g a change history).
Maybe... are the rants stored in a blockchain❓ 😱😂😂7
Right now I have all these ideas in my head that I want to do after my exams are over, but I feel overwhelmed with the amount of stuff I came up with, from finally starting to learn how to create and develop my own website to video editing for a small documentary that I want to do on my city just to train these skills.
If that is not enough, summer is here and I want to do lots of stuff with friends and my gf.
Any ideas how I can manage all of this?4
Guys I need your help.
Im a guy used to java development, so used to nice assisting IDEs.
Turns out my boss has a very complex and not very organized server written in Dlang which im supposed to add a semi-complex functionality in.
So far I have a Linux-Mint VM running a docker container able to build the system. Now I'm really not used to editing code without an IDE and all IDEs I tried on windows or Linux dont seem to work (maybe due to minimal knowledge in Linux and D).
Furthest I got was to get Visual Studio set up with Visual D, but it wasnt able to import the dub
project giving weird unsearchable errors.
Is there anyone out there able to get me started with an IDE? The server is on a github-repository, is a dub project and has a few dependencies.
I'm just totally lost.5
Using CodeWriter (the one from windows store) since a few days for small tasks (like editing an xml or yaml etc) and i like it.
Yep vim guys, u hate me now, but idc ^^
The most stressful day of month.
I need to put hours into hour counting programs so computer can analyze those hours using deep learning algorithms and pay me a wage I don't deserve.
Each program work differently.
One of it works inside the local company network.
Other one I need to connect outside from company network.
In all of them I can't make mistake or I need to write to someone to fix my mistakes.
One of this programs use java applet, other is simple php website.
One of them blocks row in calendar when I click so when I login again and click I can't edit this row because it's locked by me who is editing this row.
One of them is requesting me to provide my work in minutes.
I need to follow strict procedures to report any holidays or national holidays that I need first figure out when they happen.
Wish me luck.1
@dfox There's something wrong with bluetooth keyboards in the devrant android app.
1) If you switch from the onscreen keyboard (I'm using Hacker's Keyboard) to a bluetooth one while on the rant/comment editing/posting screen the exit and post buttons become unresponsive. (Pressing the back button on your phone is okay though. If you then reopen the rant it works again)
2) switching back to the onscreen keyboard replaces everyting you've written with the tags ...?
is there a Go module for editing Flat Open Document Text? I'll like to edit placeholder text from a fodt file and send the results to thecodingmachine/gotenberg to convert the file to a PDF
I guess I'll just trouble shoot this controller for an hour or so before I check the file-tree and find out that I'm editing a stale file of the same name in the root instead of the nested file...
Windows ffs stop shoving your fucking updates into my ass. It was prompting me to restart computer for 6 fucking hours and it never gave a fucking option to postpone the update beyond one fucking hour. So I literally kept postponing it every fucking hour and went for a shower. By the time I returned it was updating it. I had more than 25 tabs opened on incognito window of chrome and atleast 8 Microsoft office files open and editing atleast 4 of them. It fucking ruined my work flow and I don't even remember the locations of the files I was referring. Who is going to open all those tabs and files. Ffs what is wrong with you WINDOWS. I AM SO PISSED OFF AT WINDOWS AND MY UNI THAT DOESN'T FUCKING ACCEPT ASSIGNMENTS IF THEY ARE NOT IN DOCX, PPT AND OTHER MICROSHIT'S CRAPPY PRODUCTS. I AM NOT IN A MOOD TO DO THE ASSIGNMENT NOW. FUCK WINDOWS. I SWER BY THE Old GODS AND THE NEW THAT I WILL CONTRIBUTE TO WINE IN THE NEXT 5 TO 6 MONTHS SO THAT I DON'T HAVE TO USE WINDOWS AGAIN.3
Yay, nothing better than good ol' change request... Right?
Limit user's ability to do sth, if this condition is met, allow editing global parameter of this condtion, than add per action overrides, on top of that add per-user override, on top of that add per-user overrides to ignore certain overrides.
Shiit man, reading this took me 3-4 times and still Im not sure if I 100% understand
Okay, I think I got this.
per-user ignore flag to setting
override to setting
per-user ignore flag to override to setting
override to override to setting
per-user ignore flag to override to override to setting
design assumption: automatic system that can make life easier
me: designed system to be fully automatic
every single change request: be less automatic, require more user manual and more attention to work2
You know how I broke my NAS yesterday? Well I fixed most of the functionality and made a video so other people could do it the same way. It's a short video that has subpar editing 😂. (I posted this a little earlier but I said the same thing twice) here's the link https://youtu.be/QIQ1lqqh3Fg
[POLL] How do you develop stuff?
1 - just write code. It doesn't need to be organized, it just need to work how you thought it would, and THEN you start organizing things, like editing/creating new files, letting things DRY, optimizing the sutff you did earlier;
2 - you surgically write code, making sure you keep everything is organized from the beginning. Basically you only write when you are sure.
Or maybe it's a blend between the two or something.
I'm asking because I do like the #1 and I feel uncomfortable when people see my code when it's under development. It's a mess, there are tons of comments everywhere and a bunch of repetition. But, when I find the right stuff, I start writing modules to make my code work better, remove unnecessary things, add documentation, and so on.
My development process is not the best of the best, but I get things done with it.7
I've always longed for a possibility to just change the source of a picture in MS Word, not having to delete a pic, insert it again and do any settings/adjustments over again. And so it turned out the other day that it has been there all along! Right-click a pic and pick "Ändra bild..."("Change picture..."). It's just that "Ändra" in Swedish means "change" in the sense that you modify or alter something. In this context it would be like editing the picture itself or its settings. A better word would be "Byt" which also means change, but in the sense that you replace something with something. If anyone at Microsoft is reading this, please change "Ändra bild..." to "Byt bild...". If this had been right from start, it would have saved me hours of unnecessary work over the years.
Why not allow edits after any amount of time, but have an option to see how the post was before each edit?3
Been using a really useful third party library for over a year now. Been great. Until I wanted to do one thing programatically which wasn't possible and without spending a fair bit of time editing this version of the library.
The new version of the library does what I want. But it changes how everything else interacts with it.
Feeling really down about spending ages working that out and then realise I still have another few days of integration at least. </rant>
I've spent the whole day writing editing a proposal a partner sent as docx. I've tested out writing revisions and saved the file to be sure, and I could re-open it just fine. After some hours, I've sent the file to the partner and he said he couldn't open it. Looks like Libreoffice broke the document.xml file beyond repair when I edited my last comments. Will need to work until midnight because this piece of shit software is incapable of handling the basic document structure it is written for. IF YOU SUPPORT DOCX FILES HOW ABOUT YOUR RELEASE VERSIONS DONT LEAVE BROKEN CORRUPTED MESSES YOU PIECE OF SHIT. HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU THINK HAVE YOU COLLECTIVELY WASTED??1
Nooooo!!! Fuck me, i'm a fucking idiot. I just fat fingered my keyboard while editing my Makefile. Accidentally made the clean "rm *"...
Lost a couple of hours of progress :'(3
Need your help!
Tldr: how do I build a system with 2 power supplies so that I can power it from either one?
I'm currently working on a "video editing van" for an upcoming project and I found awesome atx power supplies that you can use on your normal car power source. Something like this: http://powerstream.com/DC-PC-12V.ht...
Here is where it gets tricky: obvioisly it would be easy to build a dedicated system for this purpose but I want to use an existing system with an existing psu. I still want to use the pc normally at home with the standard psu but don't fell like switching every single power connector everytime I take the pc into or out of the van. Do you have any idea how to make some sort of switching mechanism so that I can leave the Hardware as it is and just power it of any of the two psus?
Thanks in advance!8
Debugging a WCF app and could for the love of it not get its main window up. Then I realized it was freaking Photoshop that placed itself on top of it. PS is great for editing images, but has useless management of windows and memory, at least on Windows, originally developed for Mac as it is.
What are some tips for shooting and editing cell phone videos?
WTC was great but somehow send the camera app algo decided to process out the sun and a lot of colors....
Any way to fix it sorta like Lightroom?
Also how do I compress the videos to YouTube's size.... Without uploading to YouTube?
In high school I had a digital media class, where we mostly learned Adobe design software and video editing and whatnot, but one project was to actually code using Programming (the software) and I loved it. Later that year I used a free project in the class to learn arduino per my teachers recommendation. Absolutely loved every second of that project, and have been coding ever since.
So I just published my first real npm package. It's a tool to help remember commands and aliases for future usage! It's basically to fill in the gap between keeping a list of commands you like, and editing your bashrc to include them. Check it out and tell me what you think!
Ok so I'm parts UI/UX designer in a corporate setting so I use graphic editing software like Photoshop rather extensively.
Obviously, I'm confronted to a lot of admin rights restrictions, which is to be expected.
What I'd like to know is why the f*** does ADDING A FONT in W10 require admin rights ?
What's potential security loophole could one exploit using TrueType font installation exactly ? Or are they afraid someone's going to remove all system fonts from the Fonts folder ? Anybody that does that shouldn't be allowed access a computer afterwards.3
Working on a xslt just to change a single character in an invoice. The system I use does not have the euros sign...
Because fuck manually editing the pdf every month.
Vim got me interested in efficient text editing but Emacs made me stay. I like both and use both, but for different things.
*me trying to fix the preview issue by editing layout file*
*issue gets fixed by clean build*
*me implementing a new feature as per plan*
*suddenly another issue occurs with the items in recycler view*
*tries SO, no related question and me too scared to ask one*
*trying different names, keywords, ids and methods to get atleast some output*
*checks json and recycler adapter, all fine but still the error*
*hello darkness my old friend*
*checks the item layout again with a microscopic look and encounters a 0 added to layout width which makes 95dp to 950dp and hence no output somehow*
*2 hours and sunday mood wasted*
Posted a ranted, wanted to modify it a little, had to reload few times before the network of my lousy cell phone operator get the message trough just to find out that getting back online and editing post took more than 5 minutes!
Anybody know a way to very quickly insert images/doodles when editing markdown?
For example, In a calc class, I want to be able to type text, then hit a keybind and have a pane where I can doodle a math equation instead of using latex or some other lookalike, then hit enter and insert in and continue on my merry way.
OneNote is not an option and I'm running on a type of Ubuntu 😁
I initially thought I wanted to go to college for video editing, then I changed my mind and wanted to go into graphic design. Those didn't work out and I began contemplating what I could do with my life. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. I could make a career out of the hobby I had since the age of 13. Never even considered it before that moment.
My geekiest non-dev activity?
Recently its been playing Star Wars Battlefront (on PC). Its been a good SharePoint stress reliever, but hardly anyone playing anymore.
Will be getting back into 'video production' this summer converting decades worth of VHS tapes to digital for various family member's (lots & lots of editing and cleaning up).
After a lot of time and effort and time my personal gaming and editing rig is done! Please like and subscribe! https://youtube.com/watch/...
I was just curious about this: how many of you guys uses emacs/vim? Is it your main editor or just for quick editing? Any specific reason besides familiarity?
I ask this because I'm a late adopter of emacs. It is my quick editor (I use jetbrains IDEs). Fell in love with mu4e and twitter-mode, but org-mode was the deal breaker.3
Greetings guys and gals.
I found an old laptop of mine and since I don't really use it anymore, I want to try "the linux" on it.
My question is, what's a nice linux distribution to make the windows transition smoother.
I have a vps so I'm not afraid to use the terminal.
I just want vscode and a browser on it, no gaming, no video editing, nothing fancy.
Pretty niche tool, but Sencha Architect!
It is a wanna be GUI-Builder/IDE for ExtJS, but neither works properly.
This rant is not about ExtJS, just about Sencha Architect, which my coworkers and I were forced to use.
If you want to join the ride, here an excerpt of just some of the issues:
- installation: already the setup is more of a gamble than an actual setup, either it works on your machine or it doesn't, plain and simple
- GUI Builder: just drag and dropping components is actually nice, but the editing capabilities are frustrating, you can't edit the UI code by hand at all, just through pre defined properties. If there was the need to really mix things up it wasn't possible, I couldn't even rebuild shown examples of their ExtJS documentation. Furthermore the property editor was data type locked, which means if you want to enter a string which ExtJS already supports, but architect locks the value as a boolean, you can't edit it at all, while still using Architect
- code editing: well it is a colored texteditor, which is fine, and I could live with that, but Architect let's you just edit areas where it allows you to - want to change something else? Nope not allowed
- autocompletion: there is none at all, same goes for refactoring, multi highlighting, string replacement, and others
- code storing: well now some may think edit it somewhere else, well no, also not possible... Architect not just only saves simple js, there is also a Json formatted file for everything you have created, which is needed so the tool can actually load it for further editing. They possibly never heard of DRY. But the worst of this code storing was actually using git along with it - have a merge conflict? Merge both files! Every single time, it was so damn tedious
There are a few more, but these were the worst I can remember.
Luckily I don't have to use it anymore!
Maybe they have fixed or changed a lot of it, because the developers were aware of the issues and eager to resolve them, as far as I was told on a roadmap presentation. And some of the tools they had released in the end of my time using ExtJS were actually really good, like an IDE plugin for the framework, and I liked using it.
And for the record, the width and height of the image used are only used in formulas which produce the actual width and height of the mock buttons that get drawn onto the canvas element. And don't worry, the click event handler for these mock buttons is actually the click event handler for the canvas...which checks the coordinates of where the click was made on the canvas. And if the click is over where the button is drawn in, congrats you clicked the button.
Help needed : Macbook Pro i5 2018 with 16go of ram or Macbook Pro i7 2018 with 16go of ram, I will use this computer mainly for coding so I won't be doing any video editing
PS : both of them are 13 inches
What do think I should chose?10
Today I finally finished editing the video for my new song. I have been working on the song itself, recording hundreds of takes of instruments and vocals, for almost four weeks now.
Editing the video took about 3 days, partly because I am using Hitfilm 4 Express for the first time. It's definitely a huge step up from Windows Movie Maker, but I did hit one mindboggling snag which delayed me for more than an hour.
When the editing was done and I exported the finished video, I play it, only to discover that the first second or so of audio is missing. That's kind of important for a music video.
So I try all kinds of things. Reimporting the audio into the project in different resolutions, trying different rendering settings, deleting or adding audio tracks, you name it. And each time the finished video is missing that first second of audio.
And each render takes about 10 minutes to complete, which is a long time to wait for one second of silence!
Out of desperation I start thinking about adding the audio to the video in Windows Movie Maker, just because I know that always works, even if that will degrade the quality.
But before I do that I try one more thing: I add a few seconds of silence at the beginning of the song in Audacity, then import into Hitfilm one more time.
And then it works!
I shall report my findings to Hitfilm shortly :-)4
looking for suggestions for a self hosted CMS. I tried Ghost, and it looks real nice, but there's no option to have just 1 section be private, you can only make the whole thing private. I tried Drupal but honestly it's just way too complicated for what I need, and doesn't look very aesthetically pleasing.
basically, here's the features I'm looking for:
- ability to set privacy/access control on a per-page or per-section basis
- Markdown for content editing
- ability to use regular HTML when needed
- ability to upload content via an API (so that I can publish documentation via my gitlab CI)4
I had thought of creating a rant post declaring my current upvotes score and I'd challenge people to change my score, there would be an app that would continuously monitor my score and update the rant post with the latest number, but sadly, you can't keep on editing the post a certain time after it was posted. :(((((1
Since most open-source projects that I use have been mentioned, I'll just mention the last one I've found about and it made my life easier:
Flameshot - https://github.com/lupoDharkael/...
It's a screenshot application that allows quick screenshot editing and has a comfortable area selector. You can see what I mean on github page.2
@dfox on the iOS app, when you're done editing your profile, it fails to reload the page, displaying an empty page as a result.1
I open Photoshop, I open an image, I start editing colors. I think to myself "I need to change units to pixels instead of inches". I open the "Preferences - Units" menu. I approach the mouse and click on the selection box for units.... My screens go crazy suddenly and I get a BSOD...
The computer reboots, refuses to repair, complains it can't write on the disk. I launch UBCD, start TestDisk, it tells me my MFT and the mirror MFT are both completely messed up and the partition contents as well... Wow wow... What the...?!
Thank you Intel GFX system driver.
For editing small stuff? micro. Intuitive shortcuts and useful commands.
For editing larger projects? Definitely a JetBrains IDE. The way they make debugging work properly out of the box is fascinating.
20 years in and I’m just now discovering Fish! Why the hell isn’t it more popular? For real, it has more features OOB than bash or zsh and the scripted is so much nicer. Oh I need to add to my path? Just add onto a built in variable from the CLI and your good, no need for a script to append a line to some file loaded by zsh or opening up the .zshrc and manually editing it. And how bout that “funcsave” built in huh? Freaking awesome. More people need to be championing Fish, it’s better than your terminal bros zsh6
Suddenly VisualStudio throws "Attempted TextBuffer edit operation while another edit is in progress." for every keystroke editing a C# source code that I could edit without a problem just a few minutes ago. WTF?!2
I know the video editing software LightWorks has its aficionados. I can see how it's powerful. I've been using it since at least version 12. But my gosh how it screws people over. In the latest version, when you import files into a project and then want to delete _just the reference_ to the files in the project, LightWorks says "Nope, imma delete the FILE, too!" So you can never just start over with an import. When you import a bunch of still photos in one shot, no matter how many, it imports them all as an unwatchably fast 1 second video sequence instead of as an individual file. Like...what? And they've dumbed down the interface so much that there's no toolbar. You have to right-click poke at everything to try to find where stuff is. And right clicking is NON-EXISTENT on a Mac. I had to use a pen tablet to achieve it. I'm too cheap to buy Adobe Premiere for the few times I have to edit video in a year, so I guess it's just ShotCut on Windows for the rest of my life.2
Hi all. Can anyone recommend me a good MacBook Pro model that’s suitable for live streaming and video editing?
I’m mostly will be doing live coding, some Youtube videos, and blogging. I really love the 2015 retina model but my friend said to get newer specs. What you guys think?4
When your code works then you have this inclination to add an extra feature and after adding it ,it works after catching a few bugs but then .... you feel so smug with yourself you add another feature and that stuff ups all YOUR CODE !!!and if you haven't saved a copy of the program before editing y0ur program so the eaaiset option you have I to use CTRL -Z and if you have been altering your code a lot the undo action only goes back a few alterations and hasn't undone your extra feature then you have to manually find the feature and clean it from your code taking longer then creating the program as a whole
The undo action needs to save more alterations of the code 😑1
Chrome is cool but have you ever assembled a 96 megapixel png with magick?
That shit uses 3GB ram why
At least now that I reserved a third of my memory to the linux VM my hard drive isn't abused for its page file anymore3
GitHub-flavoured Markdown in devRant... maybe even with syntax highlighting...
I dev the mobile platform and happy, and everything, and then, comes the marketing step... and it is sooo expensive in my country... do u guys know a hell of a good video and marketing content generating buddy for a monthly basis ?
In response to my previous rant:
You guys thought I'd have to redo my time estimate to my boss. I'm chill fam.
I just finished the code in about an hour of editing and testing.
Pic related, my face until the next time this thing breaks.
Hi guys i have been off for a while but in that process i realized am good with animation and design plus video editing... programming is a bit hectic am almost giving up but the problem is that i am on my last semester (computer science) and i have to come up with a project in order to graduate... I just need some advice1
I've been thinking about something I saw a while ago, but I can't remember the name so I came to this marvellous place to ask: what do you call live code editing?
E.g. When you're running your program and can change the code on the fly without restarting your program. I'm sure this is application-specific, but I've seen it done with the godly Java.3
i wish god made a tool thats as simple as editing styles in chrome inspect for my frontend... Editing styles that was written long ago just sucks
