Search - "static site"
Client: Still, the pop up makes the site look more professional, kindly add the feature asap
Consultant: "you should deploy a website. Use wordpress and have a draft ready in a few days. It's easy."
Me: "It's a static website, a one-pager even. I think we would be better served with something light-weight without a database."
Consultant: "99% of the websites in the entire internet are powered by wordpress. It's state of the art, you should use it"
Me: 😢 "Nooo, it needs mainentance and stuff. Look, XY is much simpler. You can even version the static site with git"
We ended up with wordpress for our static website now. I am so proud. I absolutely love wordpress. It is amazing. Now my static one-pager can have plugins, multiple users, security issues and all that. The future is now!17
Friend: How much do you charge for a website?
Me: Depends, what do you need?
Friend: Just a basic website.
Me: I am going to need more details than that, is it static HTML site? Do you want to be able to add content yourself? Do you have hosting? Do you....
Friend: Dude, just give me a rough estimate.
Friend: It's for a friend, he has an idea for a business.
Me: ...fine...$100 million 👿
//Because making a website is just a push of a button to some people21
My company needs a new Website.
ME: Boss, let me do it. It's just a simple static site with a few pages. **Dreaming about a fast and beautiful site**
BOSS: Your time is too valuable. Nobody is paying us for our website. The apprentice will do it.
Few weeks later... Wordpress page! Page loads in > 20sec. Over 150 request for css and js... It's fast on Mobile, because it just breaks and loads only half of the content.
So ashamed working in this Company. No sane customer will ever do business with us, when he sees this stackpile of shit.10
Where do I even begin?
You all know the story. I was handed this lovely out of date Django site and told to set up a development environment. This, with ZERO python or Django experience.
It has one document. Which was wrong. There was no indication of what versions of anything was correct. There was a network of 8 sites strapped together. There were three revisions of every single template stuffed into one massive folder.
Oh and did I mention, the database, static files (including media) and Django site were all on the same server with debug still active and using the development settings file.
I think I died during the process somewhere.1
"I made your static HTML pages into a dynamic site! Now just include <%Header%> instead of copy pasting that nav into every page!"
...1 week later...
"You made our website all crazy. None of the pages have headers in the source code but it still shows up by some kind of witchcraft. Put it back."3
Hello again devRanters! This is linuxxx again. A quick update regarding the privacy site!
Right now we're up to the following:
- Converting what we have right now on frontend to Bootstrap.
- Working on a page with a description as to what this is going to be exactly.
- Converted the static stuff we used before to a simple MVC based PHP web application.
- Created a DB scheme for the custom CMS I am going to write for this.
- Starting to work on the custom CMS right now!
We'll update as soon as we've got a well working description/introduction page :)
We won't be creating rants every day/new tiny feature/change or anything but as this is our first productive night, it seemed like a nice idea to update what we already got done/started on :).
Already existing website, I was asked to do a few things to redo. Code is a mess, 0 comments, oldschool technology. Completely static html site of a small company, nothing extreme.
Client: okay, could you please add 2 more items to the navbar for the 2 new pages?
Me: yes, here they are. Since it was already full, font size had to shrink.
Client: it's okay
>> Fast forward 2 weeks, full of similarly easy modifications.
Client: could you make the font size of the navbar larger?
Me: not really, we will lose responsivity
Client: do it anyway!
>> Fast forward to next day
Client calls me that it is urgent to 'do something immediately' with the navbar because it is broken and I am a 'horrible webdesigner' for making a mess of her website. I was told that it is not her job to make it good look and that I should 'use my eyes better'.
After 2 minutes of a lecture on webdesign she let me tell her how a responsive website should look like and to achieve that we should better restart the whole website. At that point I was the idiot who just wants to get more money and that I won't be able to do that since I am already unable to finish these few tiny things she asked for.5
Making a contest site for a client. It's 2 parts, a static part and then a "hub" where the contest actually takes part. I did most of the static part, and uploaded it to show her. She likes it, but wants to be able to change the content automatically without having to talk to me. Ok, I think. The harder part is the contest site, so she's not gonna run away with my code. I give her access to the ftp and teach her what to do.
To my amazement she takes a liking to html. And starts adding some (super simple) tags. They ruin some of my designs but they look fine. Whatever.
Today she messages me saying that the top picture is off. Hmm, I'll check it out. Turns out almost the entire page is ruined. What's even worse is that she inserted a link to a facebook image she has on top of everything, a picture I don't have access to, and yet she's refusing to admit that it was her mistake. It's not even wrapped in an img tag, it's just pure text!!!
Fine. I'll revert to the version I had. No! cz apparently I can't undo all the changes she's worked hard on. So now I have to go through all the markup and check what's causing this -- and I hate frontend!!!
Worst part of this all? She can't fucking be bothered to type out what her whore infested lying mouth wants to say. She has to send me voicenotes, a few minutes long, filled with uhhh ummm let me think, because that brain who thought learning to write <br/> and <em> is bad ass can't FUCKING formulate a thought before sending it. She has to have me stop my music, and stop my concentration just so she can tell me maybe she pasted it by mistake IN A 5 MINUTE VOICE NOTE. tbh the money isn't even that good. I don't know why I'm still here.
PS: it's not missing an include. I checked.7
This will be a long rant.
Met this person through my brother's friend. He wanted a cheap static website with a few products images for his handicraft store. I agreed as it would not take much time. He paid me in full upfront.
I registered the domain and created all the page templates with dummy contents. I uploaded the site under a staging sub-domain and asked him for the contents, but he said he was a bit busy and would give them to me later on.
After almost 2 years, out of nowhere, he got back to me and told me he didn't want that old website anymore but he wanted a new personal website. What shocked me was that he told me that he would only pay me for the domain and space but won't pay me for the website as his pervious work was never complete. I denied straight forward and told him I would keep the 80% amt for my work done but he kept telling me I hadn't done anything except place a few images in some html files. Hahaha, After a few in and out mails I told him I didn't wanted his money and would refund all of it, but this shitty guy had a messed of mind. He started posting messages of my fb wall about how i was a fraud and I had taken his money. Things got intense. I had decided to sue this cheap minded asshole but after my brother's friend convinced me not to and apologized on his behalf. He told me not to worry about it and move on.
Haven't heard from him till now.
Thank you for reading till this far.11
I rewrote my static website generation from jekyll to custom python code over single night.
Literally all jekyll plugins I use including seo, rss, syntax highlighting inside markdown content, sitemap, social plugins, css sass, all of it.
Now it’s around 400 lines of python code that I understand completely. I didn’t touch any existing templates and after comparing output I got even better results now and it’s working faster.
I skipped drafts as I don’t need them now.
Why ? Cause now I can make better generator for my side projects that can include some partial website generation, better modification and date handling, tree structure, etc.
What I will do now is that I will parse bunch of content to create markdown files that will be sucked by this generator to create static web pages that will flood internet lol.
Still I didn’t believe it was possible to rewrite all of it so quickly. I sit yesterday around 4pm and finished around 6am.
I started thinking that maybe I am crazy and no one can help me.9
I provide hosting for my clients. About 3 months ago I discovered that the hosting company that I'd been using had been swallowed up by EIG, which explained why the tech support had gone downhill.
So, I jumped to another hosting company. Same shit different company!
Apparently the fact that my browsers sit at "connecting" for up to 30 seconds, and I get a "could not connect to" message half the time while I'm trying to fucking work on a deadline is the fault of some plug-in in a WordPress installation!
Oh yeah? Why then does this shit happen when I'm working on a pure html/css site?
Why then did it start happening after they "updated" my shared server?!
Oh, but the bastards suggest that I buy Cloudflare or pay for more space!
You fuckers made my work take 3 times as long, and you made an important migration fail!
Network places make mistakes. We all do. That's cool. Fucking own up to it, talk to me like a techie, and DON'T TRY TO BLAME IT ON ME OR MY TOOLS!
Fuck you! I think I'm gonna give Google Cloud a try, and do this shit myself!7
So here is a story of me making a website for my home server. I created a static site which did a okay job but I wanted to get available ram and CPU usage displayed on it, and I didn't want to use a php/backend. Here how I achieved it: I used a bat file on a scheduler which exports the usage via CMD commands into raw files. From these raw files I used HTML IFrames to display the text. Thus achieves my goal with minimal effort.7
I've had a non-IT world colleague ask me to build a website, I asked if it's a static website like resume etc with no database & stuff. I quoted $1000 if that's the case since that's minimal maintenance
He goes he needs a simple website, like eBay to sell his products. Also need features like Amazon, integration of various payments. And this and that.
For $1000 !!
I felt good that he thinks I can make an e-commerce site but f¢k that thinking man.. I told him to hire a freelancer and told him about few sites.
Maybe we'll see a thousand dollar e-commerce site, haha I only hope the payments part is secure 😂😂 I ain't buying anything anyways. I'm 99 % sure nobody's gonna do it and next time we talk, he's gonna be like 1000 and a 50 haha3
Semi rant/ opinion
I have been wondering a bit about what my fellow devs think about adblockers
I have been using an adblocker for years.
I am guessing we got a good mix of both people who are pro and against them
I do get the site's owner point of view wanting to get a little bit of cash out of their site buts its the ad publisher that come in and royally screw things up with their garish flashy shit.
I wouldn't really mind 2-3 small static adverts on a page, little ones that don't disrupt the flow of the page or clash with the page colour scheme (i know that one is a bit far fetched but anyone who loaded up a dark page in the comfort of a darkened room only to have a big bright ad turn up in the middle of the page force them to squint ). Sadly publishers don't give a damn, their only concern is to
GRAB YOUR ATTENTION...
FLASHY FLASH FLASH MOFO!
OH AND HERE IS AN AUDIO ENABLED ONE FOR YA, GOOD LUCK MUTING IT YOU POOR SHMUCK , ONE CLICK ON THE DAMN THING WILL TAKE YOU TO THE LAND OF POP-UPS
AH YOU WANNA DOWNLOAD SOMETHING BUDDY ? AH WELL I HOPE YOU LIKE INDIANA JONES' SCENE WITH HOLY GRAIL
CUZ HERE ARE 10 DOWNLOAD BUTTONS, ONE IS THE REAL THING THE REST WILL ARE TOOLBARS
They are the biggest culprit here yet moan the loudest about adblockers.
Sort yourselves out then complain to us about ad blocking6
First week in the job and I was told to update an intranet page. Opened it in notepad, made the change and saved it.
Turned out it was a SharePoint site and saving it in notepad broke all the links and turned it into a static page. Even worse, it was the homepage of the intranet.
I blame lack of training and, in hindsight, how awful SharePoint is.
Anyway, at least we successfully tested the backup process...1
I get an email about an hour before I get into work: Our website is 502'ing and our company email addresses are all spammed! I login to the server, test if static files (served separately from site) works (they do). This means that my upstream proxy'd PHP-FPM process was fucked. I killed the daemon, checked the web root for sanity, and ran it again. Then, I set up rate limiting. Who knew such a site would get hit?
Some fucking script kiddie set up a proxy, ran Scrapy behind it, and crawled our site for DDoS-able URLs - even out of forms. I say script kiddie because no real hacker would hit this site (it's minor tourism in New Jersey), and the crawler was too advanced for joe shmoe to write. You're no match for well-tuned rate-limiting, asshole!1
Why the FUCK are my project ideas so easy to implement. I wanted to make a static site sharing webpage (imagine github pages), and i fucking made it in 2 hours?????? Fuck me, does anyone know something like codewars or something but with project ideas instead of algorithms?7
WTF?!? so apparently I guy I know, knows the guy who built dodeley.com (don't get me started on the name!)
Oh boy... Where should I begin? So besides the fact that I'm pretty sure these newsletters will be classified as spam (aites like mailchimp and so on actually pay large mail providers not to classify them as spam, I doubt they do...), their so called "widget" is just a form, sent to their domain using GET, FUCKING GET, NOT POST, GET!!! The request looks something like "dodeley.com/?action=subscribe&id=xxx&field1=xxx&..." I mean like, WTF? Oh and their solution to not leave the page is simply to add a target="_blank" to the form, that you have to include on your site.
Did I mention, that the form id is static? Did I mention, that there's no validation on what you enter?
Who the fuck programmed this shit? Honestly!1
I have an idea and I want some feedback.
I'm the only web developer and I've been updating our systems so they can be maintainable. Previously we have used Wordpress for landing pages which is complete overkill So here's the idea:
Static sites for landing pages and any forms that would need to filled out would be on a separate site.
Ok so here me out. First the landing pages barely need any maintenance so using pure HTML/CSS/JS wouldn't be a problem. This means I can strip away all of the crap from Wordpress and make the load times faster. Second all of the landing pages forms would be hosted in a single place making analytics easier for the reporting system.
Really I just despise Wordpress and am trying any practical reason to not use it as much as possible. Oh and don't worry I'll use preprocessors and minify the production files.7
(Ok, I love js in general (specially with es6), but here's something I hate about the "ecosystem". Dont take this too srsly also)
Holy fucking gagged shit, these project readmes that start out for too long about the project objective instead of stating the actual thing/s the software does.
WHAT DOES IT FUCKING DO!?
STOP BEING FUCKING FANCY ABOUT YOUR PROJECT.
Jesus christ, people jacking off about their awesome tool and how it will make everyone happy. No one cares.
"shitsmoke.js is a framework that focuses on delivering truly reliable data with static checking enabled on deployment."
WHAT THE SHIT DOES THAT MEAN?
Gimme a bullet point with the goddamn features (not the fucking BENEFITS) and I'm done.
These are like layers of marketing bullshit texts you have get through, getting more technical as you go on.
But sometimes they never do a technical summary, THEY GO STRAIGHT INTO THE GODDAMN API. And the API docs belong to a docs site, there is github.io and packages that take care of that.
You're like a goddamn linguistic detective, trying to disect the meaning of these words to understand if some package is what you're looking for.
And I don't wanna visit another website to understand what it does either!2
So my manager mentioned off hand that we might look at updating our company website to look a little more modern...
Me being me jumped right into action and now that I've finished I remember why I haven't built my personal site.. Fuck static web pages man...
Don't know why I did this, not even happy with it but I think it'll do, CSS and HTML is messy but fuck it, it works...1
FUCKING CSS and browser inconsistencies.
Trying to make a simple static site but these fucking browsers are making it so hard I want to program console application instead.
Also for some reason mobile Firefox don't give the right window height and width fuck everything.9
Why are there barely any material design based static site libraries using js and CSS -,-
Don't use node or anything so guess I'll be building my own 😁🔫16
The most interesting part of learning Jekyll is trying to remember how to type 'Jekyll' correctly...
Static UI designs are no longer acceptable for site or applications. UX today is equally about the large and subtle animations. The way to forms, boxes, text, header and buttons react with the users choices. Handing a dev an image of an apps view is doing half the job in today’s web market.7
What static site generator do you prefer, and why?
I want to set up a website for a small business and do not want to spend a lot of time on it but it also should be blazing fast.
My familiarity with react leads me to Gatsby, but there are probably good alternatives.
It should also be easy for the (non-tech) admin then to create posts on a news page or even new pages (probably with Markdown).
Thank you in advance!4
My company is getting a new website. This involves getting new hosting.
I made the old one, and it's all just static html. I'm not that attached to it but it's an important detail.
The bosses want the switch to the new site to happen instantly, but I pointed out that with DNS propagation times etc it can't really happen that way.
So I suggested the new web guys host our old site for a few days and we change the DNS now. Then when they want to launch we don't have to wait for the DNS and they can just swap it out.
This involves dropping 10MB of html files into the web directory on the new server.
For this service they are charging us for 2 hours of their time!
I guess I'm in the wrong business...
If you just want to answer my question, skip to the bottom. For those who cares, some backstory:
So...I seemed to have finally caught a break; a friend of my dad owns an IT company and also makes websites...used to. It was becoming too much for him alone so he decided to discontinue, but that's where i come in. We talked a few days ago and it sounds like I'm finally going to have a decent dev related job--even if it's only mainly websites, at least I can work from anywhere once the ball starts rolling since I'll just get direct deposits. Meaning I'd be able to visit my gf in Florida and sustain myself over there while I look to build my own client base or even get a job offer, who knows?
For you guys and gals reading this, what's your favorite/preferred static site generators and css frameworks? I know that I'll be doing mostly static sites first, and i want to deliver quality work as quick as possible. I'm cool with learning a new language once it's not too obscure; i mainly do JS and I know a bit of Python, PHP, and just the basics of Go and Ruby4
Me: *Building my own CSS and JS framework for static websites and testing it as i go while building my work site*
Inner me: Stop remaking the wheel, use MDL!
Me: *Starts sweating furiously*
Why must JS and CSS be so bloody horrible to build with from scratch, should I just use MDL and extend it with some custom classes or keep powering forward?6
Check out this article I wrote on Jekyll. There's a tutorial in progress there too :) Jekyll is a static site building framework that allows you to dynamically allocate headers, footers, etc. Change a header once and it updates across all pages. I have a tutorial in progress there too :)3
I'm back baby! I made my first official contribution today. I forked, branched, pushed and made a pull request and it got merged! Granted it was a tutorial to do so but hell, that's gotta count since it taught me Git workflow.
So... I'm back in devRant after a long MIA. Guess I got lonely. I've been studying again, on which I also had a break of many moons. Feels good to be doing it again. Although it kind of sucks how empty my profile is again but hey, I've got some time now.
I've been having a ball with the Jekyll static site generator lately and it's been teaching me 5 languages at the same time. Woah. 6 if you count Markdown, but who does that. So I've been busy.
P.S. Fuck Java! That was one of the first posts I made here last time and I wanted to make it again, because the university which teaches a certain course I might take in the future on cybersecurity is using Java and NetBeans for its material, a language I have zero interest in. Ugh.15
Static site generators are fun and games until you try to add a self hosted image file to your site. 😢3
Got a new job and I'm moving from academia to industry. Decided to step up my web dev game by using Netlify and GatsbyJS to build a static site blog.
Not a difficult task but it forces me to look at more current technologies.
Just moved flats with a last minute confirmation, sadly the flat in question is not eligible for fibre broadband (high-rise) so had to settle for good old ASDL.
Find a good deal (as all providers are offering the same speeds/technology, all ASDL broadband is provided in the UK through BT landlines) to discover there is a mandatory 2 week waiting period to switch over ownership...
Fine, will wait 10 days for internet (torture except from dev rant on mobile internet, thanks for being text only), box arrives 3 days ago stating not to plug it in until activation date...
Fine I shall wait, today I get impatient and setup the router without connecting it to the landline so I can use the WiFi to connect to my Nas etc, login to WiFi navigate to Nas IP .... Automatic reroute to "login" page "We have detected your router is not connected to the landline, ensure your router is properly connected". Try logging into management site, works, change admin password etc. No setting to disable "self heal" functionality. No setting to setup static routes for my lab router, No setting to switch to modem only mode for when I inevitably buy a new wireless router for when this piece of crap can't handle the internal network traffic...
All this for a pitiful 10/? Mbps average, I want my fibre connection back :'(1
For you freelancers out there, I've been working on trying to make some income with it locally, making single page static sites for some local businesses and restaurants so that I can get a couple hundred for making the site and a little over the cost of hosting each month residually, offering like one free menu change per month, but all redesigns and support being hourly.
I want it to be accessible pricing cause like 5 of my favorite places to eat have defunct sites that I think weren't worth the cost anymore, and I'd love to be able to see up to date menus and hours and I'm certain others would too.
Basically, I'm trying to figure out what hosting would be best for this and if I'm being realistic enough with pricing. I like the idea of surge.sh, but I feel like 12/mo for a custom domain SSL, which is good for SSL, is higher than some of the other alternatives for a lightweight one sing page site.
Any help would be great, Have a great new year guys!3
My colleague is having fever with reactjs and tools. Why the hell a 5 pages static cooperate website of our own need to use webpack?! How often we need to update the site? And today he spent whole day configure his gulp and deployment automation. If I were him, I would have finish the task with bootstrap, jquery and filezilla.3
when a client asks for an app which according to them should be easy, but they didn't include that they needed a website, server storage, and someone to maintain the site. (note: this client was two high school girls doing a project to create a company that is essentially posts appartments available for renting in a region(double note: me and two friends of mine who also was in high school during that time thought their 'idea' regarding the prizing was ridicolous) and the app they wanted to set the price 1$ and to posts an apertment for renting was 10$, so since got about 50$ for creating the bloody thing we ended up skipping using a database for data storage(such as prizes apartment adresses and so on), we instead used static pages, and the app was essentially a webbrowser loading in the pages from the url in which the page was located.5
I'm writing a website for a café and I'd like to use a new tool for generating content and managing it. Only real requirement is a SCSS pre-processor and maybe built-in Auth.
Im having a sort of dilema. I recently started taking freelance work for web developement (and design ack) and Im uncomfortable with the state of the industry. Ill explain: Say if I bid a client for a simple 1-3 page site w contact form (a new page, not migration) My suggestion is to use djangocms, django, or just static html/css/js (ie bootstrap), which produces clean, fairly secure, and fast sites. Of course I can throw a templated unoriginal wordpress site together in a few hours 2 days latest, so I offer that option as a sidenote on the bid, charging almost 2x more. For some reason I dont understand they choose the wp shitshow. I explain all the reasons that not the way to go( which I wont list, if u dont know, u never used it. google up) but they dont care abt the details, they rather pay more for shit job. OFC I reluctantly deliver what they want, but as a result my portfolio is full of unoriginal shit Im not happy showing off. I have a few sites Ive done on the side my prefered way, but they not deployed and sit in my github for all intents n purposes unviewable to potential clients.
I want to be proud of my portfolio, and it to be a representation of what Im capable of. BUT, I gotta eat, and work is better than no work.
There are so many "wordpress designers" oversaturaring the field and it lowering the overall standard of what we are capable of. I just begining my dev journey, but if I cant have a body of work Im proud of, theres no way I can see doing this the rest of my life, and that makes me really sad. My love of developing, coding, and IT/computers in general drove me to change careers from audio engineering to web development, and the fact that this fucking mr. potatoe head of a CMS is slowly turning that love into hate really pisses me off. So Im ending this !rant looking for hope.
Which static site generator are you using?
Jekyll vs Hugo vs Gatsby vs Hexo ...
I want to build my personal blog using it, I've also used ghost.
Which one is better in terms of performance?6
Good people of devRant, hear me! Today is a proud day, a day of happiness, peace, and prosperity!
Theatrical opening lines aside, I need your help. I have finally completed the setup for one of my long ongoing projects and need some input from experienced developers of any kind. I've recently started a blog focused around building a community for people who want to learn more about all engineering disciplines or want to see if they would like being an engineer. The majority of the content will be posts about various topics that relate to either specific disciplines or engineering as a whole, and cool projects you can do to work out what is fun to you.
HackTheWorld.io is the URL and I'd welcome any feedback you can give, from design to development. I used the hexo framework, which is a static html blog generator that I then upload to a web host via FTP. Let me know what you think and if you have any ideas form posts on the site, feel free to leave those as well. I've got a few I'm writing now that will hopefully help some people out there.1
I uploaded my static site on AWS. Doesn't load when I typed the public IP in the URL. Googled, found StackOverflow answer to traffic and ports as a security group to AWS. Tried it and it still doesn't work.
Hey Bluehost, sorry I left but I'm back now7
Hello tech community ,
Anyone here familiar with nginx site configuration?
I'm trying to set up it so that my nginx server serves a static website on my domain, redirects users attempting to access via HTTP to HTTPS and proxies a locally hosted server to a subdomain.
At the moment I'm struggling with how I can make both work as you can only bind a port once.
If you know resources that could help me setting up the domains, I'd appreciate it very much.
Thanks in advance. ;)10
In a e-commerce project my client asked for tax calculation with static some x value all the time.
Me: As promised your site is live and please check it.
Client: Checks everything. I want this tax to be dynamic.
Me: That was not mentioned earlier. Now I need to redo the design which takes much time.
Client: You will just change the addition at the end then what's with the design change.
Me: ( I killed him already in my mind)
How do you deal with clients continuously rewriting the content for a static website and every time you deploy they rewrite it again?
Some pages of this site I'm currently working on are on their 6th version just for written content changes!
I wanna drive over there and punch them every time they do.5
So I have purchased the domain studioentropy.com. It's taken me all afternoon but I've set up and configured aws s3 buckets and route 53 zone an entries and my shite asse site is now online, hooray... My question is with regards to https. Given that ny site is really only going to be a single page site with relatively static content, no eccomerce of any kind, no passing of sensative information is required, is it really worth going through the pain of configuring cloudfront so the site uses https instead of http?13
Migrate a site to a new web CMS... by rendering all current pages as static html files and copying it to a new server.
Is there any static site generator or builder, like webpack but which builds/compiles static HTML files? In which we can use partials and things like sass etc.
Actually I am asking for another js module/framework... Sorry :|6
A mix of both python 2 and python 3. 4 entry points (although, this was done for the sake of microservices).
All in 1 big monorepo. Hosting a site in mostly static form (i.e each page had it's own index.html with completely different headers and footers, no templates).
I made a lazy handwritten static site that's kind of broken, but I'm super proud of its quirkiness. Okay: roast me:
Hey guys I've been learning reactjs , jquery bootstrap basically a lot of static stuff but now I want to build a dynamic site like a blog I have no idea how to get started any tips or advice...8
So as a personal project for work I decided to start data logging facility variables, it's something that we might need to pickup at some point in the future so decided to take the initiative since I'm the new guy.
I setup some basic current loop sensors are things like gas line pressures for bulk nitrogen and compressed air but decided to go with a more advanced system for logging the temperature and humidity in the labs. These sensors come with 'software' it's a web site you host internally. Cool so I just need to build a simple web server to run these PoE sensors. No big deal right, it's just an IIS service. Months after ordering Server 2019 though SSC I get 4 activation codes 2 MAK and 2 KMS. I won the lottery now i just have to download the server 2019 retail ISO and... Won't take the keys. Back to purchasing, "oh I can download that for you, what key is yours". Um... I dunno you sent me 4 Can I just get the link, "well you have to have a login". Ok what building are you in I'll drive over with a USB key (hoping there on the same campus), "the download keeps stopping, I'll contact the IT service in your building". a week later I get an install ISO and still no one knows that key is mine. Local IT service suggests it's probably a MAK key since I originally got a quote for a retail copy and we don't run a KMS server on the network I'm using for testing. We'll doesn't windows reject all 4 keys then proceed to register with a non-existent KMS server on the network I'm using for testing. Great so now this server that is supposed to connected to a private network for the sensors and use the second NIC for an internet connection has to be connected to the old network that I'm using for testing because that's where the KMS server seems to be. Ok no big deal the old network has internet except the powers that be want to migrate everything to the new more secure network but I still need to be connected to the KMS server because they sent me the wrong key. So I'm up to three network cards and some of my basic sensors are running on yet another network and I want to migrate the management software to this hardware to have all my data logging in one system. I had to label the Ethernet ports so I could hand over the hardware for certification and security scans.
So at this point I have my system running with a couple sensors setup with static IP's because I haven't had time to setup the DNS for the private network the sensors run on. Local IT goes to install McAfee and can't because it isn't compatible with anything after 1809 or later, I get a message back that " we only support up to 1709" I point out that it's server 2019, "Oh yeah, let me ask about that" a bunch of back and forth ensues and finally Local IT get's a version of McAfee that will install, runs security scan again i get a message back. " There are two high risk issues on your server", my blood pressure is getting high as well. The risks there looking at McAfee versions are out of date and windows Defender is disabled (because of McAfee).
There's a low risk issue as well, something relating to the DNS service I didn't fully setup. I tell local IT just disable it for now, then think we'll heck I'll remote in and do it. Nope can't remote into my server, oh they renamed it well that's lot going to stay that way but whatever oh here's the IP they assigned it, nope cant remote in no privileges. Ok so I run up three flights of stairs to local IT before they leave for the day log into my server yup RDP is enabled, odd but whatever let's delete the DNS role for now, nope you don't have admin privileges. Now I'm really getting displeased, I can;t have admin privileges on the network you want me to use to support the service on a system you can't support and I'm supposed to believe you can migrate the life safety systems you want us to move. I'm using my system to prove that the 2FA system works, at this rate I'm going to have 2FA access to a completely worthless broken system in a few years. good thing I rebuilt the whole server in a VM I'm planning to deploy before I get the official one back. I'm skipping a lot of the ridiculous back and forth conversations because the more I think about it the more irritated I get.1
Todays website fail, looks like someone is using a NFS mount for the site:

I now understand the struggle of missing semi-colons 🙃
