My conversation with my wife today, while I was at work:
Wife: The wifi isn't working.
Me: What's it doing?
W: Not working
Me: Try turning it off an on again.
.
.
.
Me: Is your phone on LTE? Or is it connected to wifi and the internet isn't working?
W: LTE. Aubrey (my wife's sister) said she turned it off and nothing happened.
Me: did she turn it back on?
W: Do you really want me to answer that?
Me: Just making sure. What lights are on on the router?
W: (Sends me a picture of the router with no lights on)
Me:...
W: Oh it isn't even plugged in
Me:...
W (after a couple minutes): Its working now!
YES I REALLY WANT YOU TO ANSWER IF YOU TURNED IT BACK ON!14 -
*client calls*
"hello, we forgot the password to our WiFi router. Could you reset that for us?"
😐😶😮😅
"We host websites and servers sir, we don't control your router :)"
"Right, i thought so, nevermind!"
Well, that's a new one O.o23 -
I don't understand why every non-technical person who comes to do work in my apartment messes up my fucking router.
The cleaning lady - multiple times knocked the antennas partially off. Like fucking clock work. I don't get it, why is the cleaning lady attracted to my router antennas and why does she need to be so hard on them? Whatever.
The most ridiculous episode was today. And it wasn't the cleaning lady. I had a few people here doing some work today and the woman in charge who was here informed me before that they might have to move the furniture "a little."
I come home, and like a bad omen, the plastic parts on BOTH my router antennas are missing. Completely gone. It's just the the wires. Now, the router still works fine in my tiny apartment, but it is a fancy Asus router (I learned the hard way not to buy cheap routers) and I'd like it to not have fucking wires as antennas.
I email the woman (paraphrased):
Me: hey, it seems the antennas got knocked off my router, do you have any idea where they might have went?
Her: Apologies if we didn't put everything back (no shit you didn't, that's why I've had to email you). If we knocked the antennas off the router (fucking "if"???? I literally just told you in my email that they were knocked off) , they are probably somewhere by the window on the floor (they weren't).
And I still haven't found them. Why the fuck do these people seemingly attack my router? I can't figure out what it is about it. You would think people would be more careful around electronics but naaah. Anyway, going to go keep looking for my router antennas.44 -
I changed my Wi-Fi name to Syntax Error and made some changes to the configuration. I wanted to disable the admin page at the 2.4Ghz connection, but I got kicked out at 5Ghz as well. So I couldn't log in anymore and resetting the router didn't helped.
So I called the ISP if they can restore it to factory settings, but the guy on the phone didn't understand a thing I said. He said to me: "Sir I don't exactly understand what u say, but I can see an Syntax Error. Do you want me to fix it." And I laughed and I laughed.. I told him that's the Wi-Fi name but ofcourse he didn't got the joke. I called again and got someone else on the phone. He's resetting the router in a one minute call.
Had some fun this morning.11 -
Was at a friends place recently and he asked me to set a new WiFi password. Fair enough!
Me: what's the routers login?
He: Oo. No clue.
*me trying a few combinations*
*hmmm not working let's try one more time*
Router: you have entered the wrong credentials five times. Fill in a new password to regain access!
😵😨😧😱😷😲19 -
My parents have never had a router faster than 10Mb/s. When our most recent one finally bit the dust, I urged them to buy a decent one, because everyone uses the internet now. LOOK AT THE SPEED WE'VE BEEN MISSING.9

A Man from the toilet shouts to his wife :
- Darling, darling, do you hear me?!!!!
- What happened, did you run out of toilet paper?
- No, restart the router, please!5 -
My router is behind my bed so I have an Ethernet cable running through the house from my computer. When I'm drunk I can just follow the cable to bed. it works out pretty well.5

My ISP advertises themselves as IT-nerds. I once contacted the support, not tech support, just the usual support. I wanted to use my own router instead of theirs, and the supporter actually knew how I should configure my vlan and a lot of other technical stuff.
Why aren’t all ISP’s like mine?8 -
You want to know what fucking pisses me off? This fucking router thinking it can just inject itselft and redirect into any fucking page that it wants..my fucking bank account? Yep, my fucking google docs? YEP, Fucking CSGO? YOU BET BRO19

I tried to download a 441GB torrent with a gigabit down and I ended up crashing my garbage router10

I used to buy routers and see if they were dd-wrt flashable afterwards.
Just bought a router based on flashability.
Flashing dd-wrt now so that I don't have any proprietary bullshit onto the device with controls my Internet 😍
Yay for open sourceness!
Now I just hope that the flashing won't fail 😅22 -
"Oh my God thank you! How'd you fix it?"
I did literally the first thing you always do: unplug that shit and plug it back in.1 -
With all the major library/framework overhauls in the JS community, I feel we may need to start versioning in our resumes:
angular@2.4
react-router@4.0.0-alpha.5
jest@19.0.2

I recently found a company that used employee social security numbers as their login username and their MMDDYYYY as their password (which could not be changed) also their entire network was using a router with no wifi password set. :/8
-
The new IT lady of my previous company told me this:
"Hi, the Internet is not working"
"ok, did you make any recent changes to the router?"
"I didn't touch the router. I removed the switch in between so the internet should still work"
"You removed the switch"
"yeah but I didn't touch the router so what's the problem blah blah blah"

When you try to explain someone how to set up their router over the phone and you try to keep it as simple as possible...1

Some kid in my class just legit asked the teacher what a router and a modem is.
The thing is: the teacher didnt even know.12 -

Just found out that the generic router that our ISP gave us, which we use at work, has a port you can telnet into to get shell access with root privileges.12

Stepmom told me I take up the most bandwidth in the house because I have 3 monitors. ATT guy said the problem was I forwarded a Minecraft port on our router. Am I the only person who knows anything about routers?!4

I was just trying to fix a "bug" for 2 hours and then found out I only had to "clean" to project..6

I'm a network engineer. Mom questions my skills when I tell her to just reset the router, but when customer service tells her to, she acts like she's listening to the voice of god.2
-
Who said programmers cannot solve hardware problems?
My router just said "Check hardware connection of your WAN port"
I took the cable out, blew in the socket and put it back in.
My internet is back in action.3 -
I installed a firmware update on my router, and discovered it both adds telemetry and breaks the navigation in firefox. 🤦♀️
It also started complaining that my password isn't secure (despite its length) because it doesn't contain a symbol.
Good freaking job.10 -
I posted a question concerning React (and React-Router), it's been 3mn and no one has answered yet. Is Stack Overflow broken?6
-
Miss those days when web development used to be easy...
Now the react, react-router, redux, server-side-rendering, redux-form and nodejs...making me crazy.
And oh how can you forget the fucking webpack.
Someone please kill me.9 -
Best friends sister asked me if I could hack a phone or a router or something for her. Asked if the owner was alright with it. She said yes. Asked her for a picture of the interface. She sent me three pictures:
IPhone interface
Router interface
Blackberry phone interface.
😐
"I'll give you the iPhone through {best friends name}".
I have the phone now.
She's saying that I hacked their wifi.
I haven't even booted the phone yet.
I never connected to her network.
I don't know where she lives.

I was at the airport, 2AM, waiting for the plane I was supposed to board to come from another airport... Got bored, scanned the WiFi networks, found an open network with the ID of the airline I had booked with, joined, and tried port 22 on the gateway... It was a Cisco router with the default password... Needless to say, I thought I needed to teach those guys a lesson... Messed the routing table, changed its IP, disabled DHCP, and restarted the router. Needless to say, we couldn't board because they couldn't check us in...21
-
Fuck today. Just fucking fuck today. Every fucking thing is going wrong.
A router reset might work for the Internet part buuuuuut there's 4 rooms on this router so i can't really do that until tonight - the end of the fucking weekend, exactly!7 -
Coming home for xmas: fixing the router, configuring new smartphones, doin backups and listen to your mum complaing bout her "linus" system 👌🏻😂3

The link between one of the server units and our router has been disconnected and the sales dept. has gone completely offline,
Just because of this piece of crap:6 -
School has default router username and password. And it's not just a shitty tp-link router. It runs linux.
Made a simple reverse shell and I have a fully functional linux computer. Not really a hack, but it's sad.
Soon to get to the school server!3 -
Once I moved to new flat that had no internet connection yet, so I went to restaurant located under my apartment, that had WiFi secured with password. I asked for it while waiting for the order - it was "A1B2C3D4". After a while I got anoyed that it was so slow, so checked if can acces router admin page and restrict access for their clients. It turned out I can and they used default login and password, so they ended up with only my MAC whitelisted. Seemed they had connected their own business PC ("office PC") via LAN too, so I was curious if they call ISP to check it out. I checked the router settings every day, even after I got my own internet connction and they had it blocked for about 3 weeks. Then they changed WiFi password, so I came again, asked for password (another shitty one), checked router admin page and... still default login and password...9

OK. FUCK YOU REACT-ROUTER AND YOUR FUCKED UP "SHOULD BE STRAIGHT FORWARD" IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND DOCUMENTATION AND HALF BAKED EXAMPLES OF INCONSISTENT VERSIONS.

Me, explaining to my wife the difference between WiFi and Cellular as I explain why I need put the Pi from that other thread between our modem and router (and take our WiFi down) all so I can finally answer her repeated questions of "Where is all our data going???"8

Okay, so I was helping an elderly woman with her laptop + internet today (with payment). Problem: Laptop connects to WiFi, shows internet connection, but you couldn't even go to google.com.
The router wasn't the issue as my phone worked on the same WiFi. After a lot of troubleshooting steps, I noticed that Windows forced IPV6 for all WiFi connections for some reason. The router doesn't even support IPV6... So I disabled it and everything started working again.
WHY THE FUCK DID WINDOWS NOT TRY TO LOOKUP A IPV4 ADDRESS IF THE IPV6 FAILS? BOTH WERE ENABLED! WHO AT THE FUCKING WINDOWS 10 DEVELOPMENT TEAM THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA?19 -
Given how much I'm asked to fix my family's computers, I think I'm just going to write a script that shows a "Now fixing..." message and just restarts their system and router.
-
I don't understand... How can people prefer complicated web pages with fancy design over the simple and effective design of your router configuration page?
I mean, look at it... It's beautiful. If I ever asked as a client to a developer to build me a website, it'd look just like this.13 -
I switched my router and this happened. It was 10Mbps up and down; now it's this. That can't be right...2
-
So my ISP decided it was ok for them to log into my router remotely and re enable the wifi.
I turned it off for a reason and no your excuse that it will improve my upload speed is bullshit you stupid patronising fucking shithead.
I'm now seriously looking into cancelling my service with you because you don't respect your customers or their wishes.
Also I'm guessing there's a default backdoor password into the router as I changed all the passwords I could find. Meaning the whole thing is horribly insecure.11 -
We live in a society in which quantum computers exist, and yet I still have to r set my router constantly just to keep connected to the internet. Weren’t we supposed to have flying cars by now too?7
-
so my parents live close and my dad said his router died. I told him I had a spare. I loaded it dd-wrt on there and next time I went over there he asked about opening a port. I said I could do it for him. wouldn't let me touch it. he believes he is the computer genius and that I would brake it.
funny part is I work on servers for huge companies like Wells Fargo, Ally Bank and tons of others. I can configure a rack mount router but he doesn't trust me to touch a little crappy home linksys router lol.
no matter how smart you are they never want to admit their kid knows more about tech than they do.4 -
a fuckin router that sits 0.4 METERS NEXT TO ME of FULL signal doesn't work at all on my phone so i have to switch to 4G network which fetches network far far away from the satellite which is placed IN THE FUCKIN COSMOS OUTSIDE OF THIS PLANET..... AND THAT FUCKING WORKS......9

This is next level shit...
My friend in college is always sending me his C code for debugging IN FUCKING .odt!!
He even highlights the syntax.5 -
That awesome moment when you're hailed as God Of Internet, and all you've done is just restart the router :D1

So I have that custom-made wifi router I've built. And it uses a USB wifi adapter with AC (wifi5) capability - the fastest one I could find in AliExpress.
I set it up a while ago - the internet access works fine, although speeds are somewhat sluggish. But hey, what to expect from a cheapo on Ali! Not to mention it's USB, not a PCIe...
A few days ago I ran a few speedtest.net tests with my actual AC router and the one I've built. Results were so different I wanted to cry :( some pathetic 23Mbps with my custom router :(
This evening I had some time on my hands and finally decided to have an umpteenth look.
nmcli d wifi
this is what caught my eye first. The RATE column listed my custom router as 54Mbps, whereas the actual router had 195Mbps.
I have reviewed the hostapd configuration sooo many times - this time nothing caught my eye as well.
Googling did not give anything obvious as well.
What do we do next? Yes, that's right - enable debug and read the logs.
> VHT (IEEE 802.11ac) with WPA/WPA2 requires CCMP/GCMP to be enabled, disabling VHT capabilities
This is one of the lines at the top of the log. Waaaaiiitttt.. VHT is something I definitely want with ac -- why does it disable that??? Sounds like a configuration fuckup rather than the HW limitation! And config fuckups CAN be fixed!
Turns out, an innocently looking
`wpa_pairwise=TKIP`
change into
`wpa_pairwise=TKIP CCMP`
made a world of a difference!
:wq
!hostapd
connect to the hostapd hotspot and run that iperf3 test again, and... Oh my. Oh boi! My pants fell off -- the speed increased >3x times!
A quick speedtest.net test deems my custom router's download speeds hardly any worse than the speeds obtained using my LInksys!!
The moral of the story: no matter how innocent some configurations look, they might make a huge difference. And RTFL [read the fucking logs]
In the pic -- left - my actual router, right - my custom-built router with a USB wifi adapter. Not too shabby!7 -
🔐How can a manufacturer(Netgear) not allow changing username of the admin user???🔥
That effectively lets anyone bruteforce the damn thing like its being grilled on a BBQ!
Yet they implement remote access router management via 8080 and alley you set up VPN server on the incapable thing.7 -
So for the past month, my sister had her Wi-Fi router hanging fron her window thinking she would get better internet...

I just spent 2 hours configuring my parents' new Huawei wifi router using my phone's Google translate because the UI is all Chinese.
'oh so that's why it was cheaper'10 -
My situation: I got computer, router, phone, printer etc. all at one place
Now I decided to do some cable management...
I don't really know how to do cable management so I grabbed some duct tape ... This area now looks like this6 -
Me: *Sends link to mate about netgear vulns because he just bought a netgear thingy*
Mate: Doesn't affect me, I ordered a switch, not a router!
Me: Ohhh so you're going to 'switch' away from routers!
Mate: Ba
Mate: Dum
Mate: I'm not even going to finish this *sigh*
I was enjoying this way too much :P1 -
YAY.... fuck you Belkin!
Just found out my router is vulnerable to CVE-2017-14491.
For all you not following these issues, this one allows the attacker to intercept connections and perform a traffic hijack, or execute arbitrary code with unrestricted privileges as well as access all important and private data stored on the device aka: the devices login/password, the Wi-Fi passwords, and configuration data just by sending malformed DNS packets to the device.
Now this is all well and good, except Belkin haven't released firmware since 2013, which is strange... seeing how the damn thing was "NEW" out of the box in 2016.
Last time i buy a fucking router from these lousy assholes. -
!dev
And again...
Our ISP doesn’t say it blocks any port on our Business Fixed IP. Currently I’m trying to access port 25 for SMTP. Guess what? Indeed port blocked. Called them “The port is open”, I visit a port checked, the same thing “Port Closed”
Always the fucking same thing. Every fcking time. These are just criminals. Lastly I removed their router, that they mentions was the only working router in our house and our signal from the other router, not provided by them was much better. They blocked the hotspots because we removed the router then. Guess what? On their site is an option Enable Hotspot on your home router (this enables your access to hotspots). Just pressed it. Haaa they can’t acces my router to set that up and it works.
In our second home, we have another ISP, Proximus, first they did difficult to come and install everything. Because in the appartment the previous owners didn’t pay the bills. After a week or so someone came to install it. Because they cut the cables couldn’t do it myself. Ok it worked for some time. After 3-4 months by once I can’t access the camera there, strange. My uncle went there and there was no internet. Neither TV. But we never received any invoice. Because they didn’t send them. We contacted them, no response. My father sends them an email, with politic people in copy and by once they called to say they will turn it back and scrap the invoices that were not send. They said no technician needed to come, as it’s second home. Guess what, next day a message came “We will arrive in less than an hour”
My uncle went. They did nothing, only restart the modem.
There still was no internet after two days after they came. We called back, response was: “There wasn’t anyone.” Yeah right, we have proof of a technicial that passed (Local Video). By once the internet worked.
Now 4 months later, still didn’t receive any invoice, neither via post or email.
Fuck those criminals, called ISPs20 -
Just realized that my "cheapest that money can buy" printer reboots faster (and a lot too) than my fairly high-end but as proprietary and shitty as routers can be Fritz!Box router. German engineering no less.
Kill me 🙂🔫14 -
I broke into hotels WiFi. So here's the setup
They have a main router (TP-Link) which they use for official purposes then they connected the main router to a Microtik router for guests.
I got a glimpse of the software they use for accomodation, billing etc. It runs on php stack maybe MySQL too and some ip can't remember now. I can use wireshark to sniff the packets. Basically should I tell the office of this hotel about the security? Or just let it go.
P.S: Guys you know I'm visiting my gf but I've got some time for myself as she had something to do. So you know I'm not using my laptop when I'm with her.13 -
Certified Enganeers: 0, Internet Connectivity Issues: 1
Those idiots couldn't even understand why I'd connected a second router (a DLink DIR 816) for better WiFi than their default garbage modem/router. And one of them told me that he'd login to the router by "putting the address in Google" (and proceeded to type 192.168.1.251 in the search bar, after I explained to him that Firefox was a browser too, just like Chrome -.-)
And they didn't even fix the problem, which is most probably on their end since everything checks out here. Brilliant. More shitty 3G/4G for me.
YOU CERTIFIED PIECES OF CRAP4 -
You want to call a function? STOP!!!
Nowadays it is so amateur and old fashioned! Instead you must:
- Make a soap request
- Write a router to handle soup requests
- Write an XML to define which controller responds to this request
- Write an XML parser on top of another XML parser
- Write a controller to trigger an event in response to the request
- Write an XML which defines the event
- Write an XML that defines the event observer
- Write a plugin which calls event observers
- Write a router which delegates the task of calling event observers to that plugin
- Write an event observer which calls another plugin
- Write a plugin that "Calls a function".
It's better because... it's more Object Oriented!21 -
Even if you unplug the router when Verizon tech support says they are going to run a test on it, they will say everything looks good and is running perfectly anyways.
Also, a tip. They will also try to sell you their newest router. Say you have that one already in every room and the speed is even lower than it was before, and then demand a refund because they sold you defective product. 9 times out of 10 they will unthrottle you instantly.1 -
3 hours of "I don't have access to that router" and waiting for someone who does have access to join the line. And then they don't have access, etc..
I love networking, hate working with network engineers. -
All of my colleagues think that IT dept. know all the internet traffics.
Plot twist: we just have simple router without any log1 -
So I got a ring doorbell for my father in law. Of course I'm setting it up for them and their WiFi is not working, they lost the router password etc..
So Im in the middle of ... reset the router added new password new ssid new wep-key etc..
Mom in law is over my shoulder "wow you are really good at this technology stuff. You should get a job with a company".
I kid you not I have been married to her daughter for 21 years WTF 🤬
So I'm like I do work for a company. My company and I get paid much more than anyone else would pay me. That how I could take your daughter and our kids to Hawaii for vacation.😠7 -
When there is no WiFi internet

1.checking router connection
2. Opening the WiFi admin portal and checking the port and socket.
3. Open CMD and ping www.google.com
My dad: Just un-plug it and plug it again

Router: Doctor, I can't take it anymore.
Doctor: What seems to be the problem?
Router: It hurts when IP. -
I just had to explain to a web master and sys admin how ports work and how to access a router if they change the local port... God fucking help us8
-
So my story has some little backstory.
I got into computers and technology because of my dad. He was very enthusiastic when I was little and when I grew older and started my apprenticeship as a software developer he was really proud. Note that he never learned anything like that. He just loved computers and games.
Now to the story itself.
I learned more and more, also about networking and came to the conclusion that our slow internet and rare internet problems probably come from stock/weird configurations. But my dads proud probably told him thats a thing he still has to do as the dad. But it annoyed me so much that I booted into kali linux, loaded an exploit to get the web admin passwort and cracked it within a minute. 😎
Finally I was able to configure everything correctly ( channels were spammed from neighbours so I switched to very unused and the disturbions got less ).
TL;DR: Dad didnt want me to configure our router and didnt give me the admin password, so I booted Kali Linux and used an exploit to get it myself 😎😎3 -
Oh sweet mother of god.
What is the NBN Connection i have attached to my router?
It goes "give me all your data... NOW"
I'm not used to such speed in my house, excuse me while I watch my porn collection in 4K!5 -
Building my own router was a great idea. It solved almost all of my problems.
Almost.
Just recently have I started to build a GL CI pipeline for my project. >100 jobs for each commit - quite a bundle. Naturally, I have used up all my free runners' time after a few commits, so I had to build myself a runner. "My old i7 should do well" - I thought to myself and deployed the GL runner on my local k8s cluster.
And my router is my k8s master.
And this is the ping to my router (via wifi) every time after I push to GL :)
DAMN IT!
P.S. at least I have Noctua all over that PC - I can't hear a sound out of it while all the CPUs are at 100%12 -
Today I built an ASP.NET Core 2.0 Rest-Api within a docker-container.
Then I ran a docker-container with the compiled ASP.NET Core 2.0 app behind a nginx router.
It was purely magic!

Dear router
It was nice having you in my house, but it's come to the point where our ways part. I must go on and you must be recycled. You've served me well all those 7 years, my friend.
It's not me, it's you. You've grown old and unreliable. Your capacitors must have dried out and can no longer serve reliable wifi connections. I keep on getting lost ICMP packets and connection outages altogether. While these things could happen to any router, definitely not every router has a 13-16 second long wifi outage every minute. I cannot have 2 peoples' work depend on a wifi connection where a ping to a LAN IP takes 58204ms. I just.. can't. You've become a liability to my family.
I'm pissed, because I cannot afford video calls with my colleagues.
I'm pissed, because my wife spends good 5 minutes every call asking "can you hear me? how about now?" and repeating herself over and over.
I'm pissed, because I can no longer watch Netflix or listen to YT Music uninterrupted by network outages.
I'm pissed, because my Cinnamon plugins freeze my UI, waiting for network response
But most of all I'm pissed, because I was disconnected from BeatSaber multiplayer server when I scored a Full Combo in Expert "Camellia: Ghost" - right before I got a chance to see my score.
I gave you 2 second chances by factory-resetting you. I admit you got better. And then got back to terrible again.
I can no longer rely on you. It's time to say our goodbies and part our ways.
P.S. as a proof of your unreliability I'm attaching outputs of ping to a LAN IP and pingloss to the same IP (pingloss: https://gitlab.com/-/snippets/...)3 -
Last night I was gaming online, thought I'd turn on MAC filter on my router. Mistyped my own MAC Address 😥7

*pointing on IE icon* but does it work on the internet?
Setting my lovely grandma's new router since she now got fiber. Opening Firefox and pages load fast, still had to show that is also worked on "internet" to make her happy2 -
I tried to contact 3 developers of restify (famous node js package) to tell them about my library anumargak (node js based router). I received the response from one guy finally who talked to other developers when I explained the advantages of switching to this new router.
They all were happy to switch and asked me to do necessary changes and raise a PR. I did it and then they stopped responding. -
Why the fuck do people not change their router admin password!? I was at a hotel today and could access their router admin interface with the default credentials. I guess this isn't purely the fault of the hotel because not all people know a damn thing about security and only use the interface to change the SSID and password of the AP. But why allow them to leave the default password? Why isn't this a standard feature to be forced to change the password :|12
-
Don't question my infrastructure setup. I ssh into server A because it's the only one available from the outside. From there i ssh into server B to ssh into server C. C functions as a router and allows me to ssh into D, E, F and G. I could go from A to C directly, but OCD.1
-
Padlocked the router... no idea where the physical key was supposed to go to gain access to the network though cause I couldnt find a keyhole in my computer1
-
That feeling when your housemate restarts the WiFi router without telling anyone while you were doing some remote work.....
Would it kill you to at least notify us? I would really love to see what happens if my other housemate was on a ranked CSGO match or something...1 -
Just drove to the store to buy a 40 foot long Ethernet cord so I could directly connect my computer to the router because Visual Studio is taking too long to download...4
-
The technician from my previous ISP was creating a mess. The cables were worn out and overall the service quality started degrading. Maybe I too had an old router.
After 10 years of loyalty, decided to switch the ISP. Similar plan, better rates. However, this one is fibre optic.
Expecting better service and less bandwidth drop. We just got the installation done and now will get the connection activated next week.
The ISP has also agreed to provide me a free 5G router, so yayayay!!5 -
## Building my own router
IT HAS ALREADY PAID OFF!!!!!
So I (with my fam) have evacuated from the capital of Lithuania into a distant place - much smaller, where average age is prolly >30 or even >40 years. I live in a village now. In a house with very good neighbours. In fact these neighbours own that house :D
Back to the point.
So these neighbours used to share their wifi (w/ internet) between the two houses. They have the line, the mian router has quite a strong antenna and that other house has 2 repeaters: 1 on the outside wall and another one -- indoors. Sepeaters are connected sequentially, i.e. the indoors one is repeating the outdoors one. ikr....?
The first day was alright. We settled in, got everything set up wifi-wise. Peachy.
The second day repeaters refused to issue a DHCP IP. That's something, right? Alright, nvm - I don't mind setting up static IPs. In fact I prefer them over the DHCP magic!
And by the noon both repeaters were connectable but neither of them could provide internet connection... We that sucks! I restarted both of them a few times, neighbours restarted their main router -- still no luck.
Here comes my router [God am I happy with this purchase and the whole idea of a customized router!!! Thanks @hakx20!].
I brought it outside, plugged it in. Connected to it through it's hotspot, used nmcli to connect to neighbours' main router with an internal wifi card (that shitty mPCIe operating in USB mode. yes, the same one, manufactured in 2003. Yes, in g mode.). A couple of iptables rules for traffic forwarding et voila! I have built my own repeater! And tomorrow I can WFH w/o any issues.
Yes, hardware routers are faster and easier to maintain. Yes, hardware routers are cheaper and usually have nicer bells and whistles. But when hardware fails you and the last thing you want is going to the public (shop), soldering rod won't help you. A software solution becomes the easiest to set up, considering you know how to.
Boi am I so happy about my purchase! CentOS router FTW!
P.S. even though we've fled the city we are responsible citizens and we've self-quarantined ourselves for the 14 days period. No local person any closer than 10 meters for the whole period until we're cleared. Being away from the city gives us sooo much freedom! This is getting WAY out of hand.
So I pay for 100/100 internet right.
I get 3/17...
This has been happening for half a year now...
The closest other ISP is 200km away......
Gonna confront them but they're probably just gonna blame my 2 year old 200$ asus router for being "too old"/"too slow".
😂🔫10 -
Fucking useless cunt that was supposed to set up glass fibre and a router still hasn't appeared. They gave me a 3 hour timeframe of when the person would show up, but obviously that those fucktards cannot even do that. I had to stay at home, instead of working, for this fucking treatment...2

dumb question...
what fun things can you do with a router running linux arm7 with telnet accsess?
apt is not installed, cURL and rpm is.
and sudo doesn't seem to work, but su.8 -
I don't know how others feel about this but every time, when the fan are spinning at full speed as you turn on the routers and they are in boot sequence.the stat lights on switch turning on/off in wave patterns

Fucking hell my ISP gave me a router and a modem (was expecting a modem that is a router, like is at my parents house with the same ISP).
The router is absolute dog shit. My connection drops every 5 minutes or so, and sometimes every minute (give or take 10 seconds). And the signal struggles in my bedroom, even though the router is about 10 feet away from me.
What the fuck piece of garbage is this? -
Me: ok let's actually start work on a project when I get home. Something small that I can finish, bin and be happy with, just need to clone my assets repo...
*Types command, nothing happens*
Hmmm that's strange, opens router config and sees it syncing at 0Mbps

So I decided to help my Mom's Mom setup an Amazon Fire TV. Now I've been here for about 3 - 4 hours and I'm setting up 2 Fire Tv's, A Router, Writting down passwords, setting up an Amazon account with Prime and fixing her computer.. 😤😢3

React router is shit
I have never seen more retarded library.
Not only those suckers change the 100% of the API every fucking update for no reason, also they have the most fucked up documentation ever.
No search in the docs!!! Fucking bullshit examples with no such easy things like how to create nested routes.
Please, stop using this piece of shit, I'm tired of working with this fucking abomination. Hope they will delete their shit repo one day.22 -
Why the fuck do I have to work with Windows? AND WHY THE FUCK DO I NEED TO RESTART 3 TIMES TO GET ACCESS TO THE INTERNET? AND... WHY THE FUCKING FUCK IS EVERYTHING 7000 TIMES SLOWER WHEN I PUT MICROSOFT DOMAINS IN MY ROUTER FIREWALL?!9
-
Creator of the react router:
If you ever see this, you created one of the greatest library with one of the worst documentation ever.
And don't get me started with versions. In every single versions, you break everything so badly and nothing works anymore.
Everytime I need to do something related to react router, I just fucking roll on the floor and cry. Documentation is fucked up.
It's totally fucked up. In the github there's one documentation, in the website there's a different. At the end, nothing works.
Please, if you want to create a nice library like this, maintain it. If you can't maintain it, mark it as deprecated and someone will take over.
But keeping something like this and making it absolutely inconsistent doesn't help. I am really tired of debugging bugs related to react-router2 -
At my last gig I was working at a small ISP and my boss was asking why our throughput went to shit every time he checked the router web ui. I told him it was because the web server on the router uses up a lot of CPU time, and that meant the router couldn't process as many packets since it uses that same CPU for well routing, nat, firewall rules etc...so it's probably best to use the CLI instead. Boss says, "YOU DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!!" And continues to destroy throughput by looking at the web ui.
TL;DR Boss yelled at me for telling him how things work. Yay.1 -

I have a little big question
I don't have electricity most of the time but the ethernet cable from my internet provider is still working if i plug it in my laptop.
Except that i have to setup the credential from the provider, user and password.
Now!
I want to plug the ethernet into the raspberry pi (3B+) make it work , because idk where should i enter the credentials and then make hotspot so i can have a router powered up from the power bank.
A pi as router
Is it possible?
Because so far i have seen people who connect the pi to the router but mine requires electricity as any other else.
?? Welp14 -
I was playing with GitHub API for some time. Then limit for requests was exceeded 😒 then I just restarted my router and got new IP and continued playing 😛1

## Building my own router
Damn it! I've got to read more before making decisions :) I already do that, but I need yet *MORE* reading.
So I bought a miniPC which I'm planning to turn into a router. I wanted to install AX200 (wifi6) card in it but it could only see the bluetooth part of it (using btusb kernel module).
What I did NOT know about wifi cards and mPCIe slots
M2 is only a form-factor. It defines what the connector looks like. Over that connector multiple different protocols could be used. m2 (NGFF) WIFI cards are usually using PCIe proto. And USB.
https://delock.com/infothek/M.2/...
My so-desired AX200 uses both PCIe and USB protocols: USB for BT and PCIe for the actual wifi.
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/.... The same spec applies to both: m2 and mPCIe card versions.
Now my mini PC has a mPCIe slot but the label on the board says "USB wifi". Which suggests that it only accepts the USB-related pins of mPCIe (as wiki says about mPCIe: "The host device supports both PCI Express and USB 2.0 connectivity, and each card may use either standard.").
So I guess that means I'm stuck with a useless mPCIe port :D shit..
Now my best bet is to wait for USB dongles supporting wifi6 and use usb AC adapters until then. Well... It's not an optimal outcome. But still IMO a better solution than an embedded router from the shelf!
(No, I'm not giving up and buying another used/new PC :) )
At last I can calm down and stop searching for magical pcie-to-usb adapters :) Phew... That's a relief!1 -
This is why you should NEVER do tech favours for friends...
As a Christmas present I setup a WiFi router for a friend (Natted to the ip it acquires through DHCP). Since then I have had numerous messages from her because her brothers are blaming the WiFi for any internet issue they have.
I told her they need to check their cables since they looked quite dodgy when I installed the router.
Today they discovered they have a termite infestation. Her father is losing his shit with her and wants her to remove the router because he is adamant that the WiFi attracted the termites and they would not have an infestation without it.
FML... I just can't.... any fucking issue in that house is going to be blamed on the WiFi router as long as it exists.4 -
Didn't want to go to my router and disconnect it to reset, so I've just cut the power with the breaker, I do really hate that power cable positioning on the router body, so much that the breaker is actually a good 15 feet more to walk, but saved me from having to fiddle around with that barrel connector.16

I HATE my router
Why the hell did virgin media think it was a good idea to NOT let me port forward ports LESS THAN I’ve already set up
WHO THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?!?
Its so fucking annoying, I’ve had to remove all of my set up ports just to add ports with low values too many times AaaAAAaa3 -
## Building my own router
So after poor luck with mPCIe in my miniPC I decided to go with USB wifi solutions. So I got the https://aliexpress.com/item/... , hooked it up and started setting things up. Took me a day to figure out that firewalld (CentOS7/8 firewall) is not directly compatible with raw iptables commands. Damn it! But hey, a lesson learnt is time well spent!
Installed named, dhcpd, hostapd, disabled NetworkManager for my wifi card, etc.. And had to learn another lesson -- if a netowrk interface is bridged then iptables sees the bridge rather than the raw interface. That's another 2 hours well spent :)
In the end I have a working AP!!! It's still hooked in to my router via RJ45, but it does work and does work quite well!
Here's some comparison for now:
via router (2.4): https://speedtest.net/result/...
via router (5): https://speedtest.net/result/...
via miniPC (2.4): https://speedtest.net/result/...
via miniPC (5): <TBD>
Not that bad, aye?
All in all I'm happy with my decision to build a miniPC based router. Now I have the modularity I wanted so mush and a complete control on my networking! Can't wait for wifi6 USB dongles to be released :)3 -
Design patterns are not a catalogue for programmers problems.
The amount of brainless coders that just slap around these patterns because they were taught that it will magically solve everything is amazing.5 -

Oh boy... IM ANGRY!
My lovely ISP just sent me my new Reciever and router, they now are 2 seperate things, which shouldve made stuff easier for me... SHOULD have...
So I connected both with ethernet, power etc... and... nope...the Reciever didnt accept the Router... nice. very nice... after HALF an HOUR i finally got through Support, amd they said "Use your old Reciever/Router combo, we will activate the new one on monday" so I went like:
Ok, that should work!
And nope. For whatever reason as soon as my new Reciever was plugged in, it sent a message to the ISP which went like:
"Im on the net, deactivate the old one"
You know what happened now...
My old Reciever/Router combo is deactivated and my ISP cant activate it because the departement for this doesnt work on the Weekend...
And my new one cant be Activated because its seperate now and the Router isnt activated by my ISP...
Now im here, with my phone as a FUCKING HOTSPOT FOR EVERYTHING I HAVE!
Alexa? Hotspot.
PC? Hotspot.
TV? Hotspot...
Fuck this...

well... I decided to build my own network for my home lab and then I head out to go shopping.
I went for a router and I told this guy what I wanted
a good router that could allow me access the internet when I want over my phones hotspot or supports USB tethering.
guess what? this blessed guy sells me a router locked to optus. I saw the "yes optus" tag but I was so fucking stupid and clueless.
why? I was just too fucking stupid to trust a fellow Nigerian by telling him I have no idea of networking and how routers work.
the router ? netgear n300 dgn2200
did it have the features I wanted at least ? no
he refused to collect it back and I sold something very dear to me to be able to buy that crap. I thought I could solve all my networking issues at once.
fuck these people, bad government bad people.
I'm done crying over it though.
any ideas on how to go around this?
I've been looking and looking for the past two days, for a less destructive option.3 -
Yesterday night!
Yeah it was Saturday night but not for me. I was at bus stop and my jiofi device was in back pocket and after some time I was coming back to my room and thinking let's switch on wifi. After that my mobile was not connected to jiofi so I thought may be jiofi out of charged. Later on when I was checking in my pocket I realize that I missed it on bus stop!
Actually this jiofi device is my first salary's garbage:D
That's why I was little bit worried.
So I went back to stop and saw nothing was there. Disappointed but wait, suddenly devRant notification came and mobile vibrated so I checked and I seen that my mobile connected to jiofi and then I checked carefully, it was there!
Actually jiofi was placed in opposite face so that light was not visible but I got my jiofi back.
Thank you devRant notification:D2 -
Last week I wired up my home network (including custom modem and routers) myself, because the stuff my ISP wanted me to use was garbage.
Luckily Germany has "router-freedom" so ISPs are not allowed to force us to use their device to dial into the network.
I did everything myself, because the 'technicians' they kept sending me were just idiots who didn't know anything, considering the highly paid job they are doing. Usually they told me, to get the device from my ISP, because my "Router" (actually a business grade, standalone Modem by Cisco, to feed my Router) didn't even have WiFi ( lol ). Also all Technicians didn't arrive at the agreed date but at some other time. I wasn't able to wait any longer.
So I did it myself.
Consider me something more like a student of theoretical computer science. Not actually supposed to be experienced with hardware stuff.
The ISP is serving me with a DOCSIS 3.0 Network based on the television cable network in my city. For some reason they are providing the internet-access to only one socket in the apartment, which has a rather uncommon "WICLIC" connector. After having trouble getting an adapter for WICLIC to common coaxial F-Connectors (used by every DOCSIS-Modem), I made one myself.
After setting up everything (not that hard, once the connectors fit) my modem told me, that, while I'm perfectly connected to the ISPs internal Network, I still can't access the internet.
So I called the ISP...
After getting ranted at, about that what I'm doing is illegal and only certified employees are allowed to do this and I will break more, than actually do good and that I can't just connect my own "Router" (again I needed to correct her: Modem) I hang up the phone.
Also she accused me of hacking their devices because I'm not supposed to see my IP address... (My Modem told me on its web interface. I didn't even need telnet for that.)
I went to the ISPs head office, told the first desk as many technical terms as I could remember and got forwarded to something like the main technician.
He was a really nice guy. The only sane and qualified person I dealt with at this company. He asked me for my Address and Device Model, I told him my MAC and last internal IP, I had seen and he activated my internet access within a minute.
We talked a while about the stupid connector that ISP is using in the homes and he gifted me some nicer adapters to connect my modem to the wall.
Why do ISPs hate their customers that much?2 -

My router bit the dust last night... so I bought a new one that is a bit faster. I was getting about 30 mbps with wifi on my old one, this is what I am getting on my new one. I should add that I thought I was only paying for 150 mb connection, I guess i was wrong :)3

So, I move house with my amazing, already configured and stable router with built in VPN, DDNS, Port forwarding and DHCP addresses.
Received ISP shitty router at new address and want to use as modem only, so I go read the manual.
"Bridge mode requires you to configure your other router with PPPoE and the ISP's credentials"
Landline is not working, so I cannot call the number to retrieve my password. After 2 days of waiting, engineer visits, installs master socket, dial tone yaaay.
Call number to get password, automated voice message has such a bad sound quality that I cannot figure out if it's saying F or S, and there are two of those letters.
Put ISP router in bridge mode, set other router to PPPoE and put credentials, nothing. Try with F and F, S and F, F and S, S and S... Nothing. Put it back to dynamic IP address, it works.
I resign myself and manually configure everything I had on the good router to the ISP one. A few issues with my server and DDNS, but hey, internet works.
Start missing the other functionality, try the password idiocy again. Nothing.
Next day, go to work, talk to a colleague that lives close and has the same provider: "I just put it into bridge mode and it worked".
Go back home, bridge mode on ISP router, Dynamic IP on good router, no credentials. It works.
Why do I always overcomplicate stuff?4 -

It fix the problem half of the time.
Step 2:

Those little assholes who code the web interfaces for the provider specific router. You also can't replace it with a fritzbox or something similar.
1. Password field only
2. Password field is no password field
3. This red internet thing doesn't tell me what's fucking wrong
4. The "diagnose" says everything is alright with my internet
5. It always complains because not every device in my network supports gigabit yet (there is an old switch). No reason to show everything in fucking red imo.
6. The things it lists I have to check can be and also should be checked by the fucking thing itself. Like wtf. They wanted a lot of money from me for this shitty thing and there is no temperature sensor to check if it's too hot.
7. It just stops working on hot days... Restart manually solves it. Let's restart manually from work when I have to access my files on my NAS from fucking 40 km away..

So I have a job at a client to fix their system because the last systemadmin fucked everything up. One of the things I need to do is let the boss work from home.
No problem. I set up a vpn connection to work and everything just works. Except that the home network had the same dhcp range so that had to change.
I login on the router and literally everything is fucking locked. I call them and they send me a new router same fucking problem. So we bought an asus router so I finally can fix it.

## building my own router
I hoped things would go more smoothly :)
Anyway, my new miniPC easily accepted CentOS 8 - no fuss here. And I've got to say - I love CentOS8 so far! Shell has amazing nifty tricks, UI (gnome3) is also snappy, video/audio/ethernet,.. everything works.
What I did NOT expect is hardware being off. Well okay, the price was low - it was obvious smth is not right. But still.. I decided to build my own router so that I could swap wifi card whenever I want. So that I could run my own network services in there. Turns out - the card swapping is not as easy as one might think.
I got the AX200 WiFi6 card for that very purpose. But once plugged in the OS can only see it's bluetooth module. Weird... What's even weirder is that even though the card is PCIe, the OS uses btusb module to talk to that device. What? USB?? emm.. What??
And there it is. After opening it up again I noticed that the mPCIe area is marked with a label: "USB WIFI / WWAN". USB? Does that mean this PCIe slot is wired into the USB bus? Not impossible I guess.
Googling for a "pcie wifi over usb" or smth like that brought me to one reddit (I think?) where someone wanted to build a DIY wifi mPCIe -> USB adapter and someone else adviced hime that (for some reason) at best he could only get bluetooth working (hey! just like me!). It's got to do smth with pcie channels and USB being too weak to handle all that load, or smth.. IDK, I'm not a HW guy.
Well that sucks then! I have a mPCIe slot that does not work as a PCIe. Shit! So I guess the best I could do is to plug back in the same wifi card that came with the device. It smells like 2003 - supports only g protocol. Fine, let's try that. Maybe I'll find a way to work around this mPCIe limitation later on (USB adapter or smth... except there are no USB WIFI6 dongles yet :( ). So I plug it back in and start turning it into a router. Disable NetworkManager, configure static NCs' settings, install dhcpd, hostapd, bind and others. Looks like all is done! Now it's time to start it all. systemctl start hostapd --> FAILED. wtf? journalctl says it could not initialize a driver. umm okay? Why? Forums say I should airodump-ng check and kill whatever's using that device. Fine. airodumo reveals avahi and wpa_suppl are still using it. kill, kill, GOTTA KILL 'EM ALL!! Starting hostapd again -- same shit... wtf?
iw list
My gawd... That shitty network card does not even support AP mode :( I mean.. My USB wifi dongle for 2€ supports 2x more modes, is faster, has better range and is easier to work with than this old tart!
Yeah. That was an interesting day. When enfironment engineers break my testing environments at work I'm glad I have where to spend my time now.
BTW any ideas how to bypass this mPCIe nonsense? Come on, there are USB GPUs out there.. Why can't they make a USB (or dual-USB if they really need to) mPCIe adapter?8 -
This is all the DHCP settings I get on this shitty router I got from my ISP. The other settings are more the less the same, which is trash. Don't even get me started on the interface.
The thing doesn't even support *WRT firmwares because it has a Realtek CPU.
Thanks. Guess I'll have to buy a new router now...7 -
I swear to God if I hear one more person complaining that their wifi doesn't work I'm gonna lose it. Is the difference between the wan connection to your ISP and the connection from your wifi router really that hard to understand?4

Marketing material for a RasPi-based device that, supposedly, secures all your traffic from hackers by (translated) "encrypting traffic to your router" and "sharding and dispersing your data, so nobody can read it".

Tldr: no router, almost not work.
Ok I recently moved into a new house, and I signed a contract for an Internet line.
Problem is that the router has been sent at the ISP shop, where I was supposed to get it personally. But guess what? Covid emergency happened two days after, and the shop closed.
So, after spending two days calling customer service of both ISP and Postal office without being able to speak to anybody, I received a Sms saying that the pack was not delivered because the receiver was closed.
After some more unsuccessful calls to the same two entities I managed to find the actual shop's phone number, that was actually thw owner's house (he's working from home). I spoke to him, told the problem, and he changed the router destination to my house.
Today I checked the package status on the postal website and I saw that it seems that they tried every day, at 7:02 am, to deliver the bloody package again at the shop! I truly hope this was a bug on their tracking system. It's weird that the hours were always 7:02am, because the package delivery office opens at 8:30 am, so again I'm praying any existent and non-existent god that that's just a bug. I'm kinda tired of being stuck with my phone hotspot with limited GB and with ISP public routers with about 5Mbps.
I wish I had @netikras skills with router building.4 -

So I just started watching Eli The Computer Guy's videos on networking and I really like them so far(only on the introduction so far though), but I was a bit confused about some of the stuff and I thought to myself that some of this might be obsolote or not so much in use these days/different. So here are some questions(now bear with me, I'm still a noob to the whole topic of networking):
-Are Eli's videos on networking obsolete(besides the speeds that he talks about), what you recommend some other tutorial, if so which one?
-Is a switch necessary for a small network?
-Do we still connect routers to modems or do we just use what we refer to as a router(a mix between a router and a modem -> gateway/gateway router)?
-Can you connect an ethernet cable to your router/gateway?
-So according to Eli if you have multiple routers they make seperate networks that cant just be acessed from each other, then how come it be that I can access my rasperry pi when I'm connected on the network of one router when the raspberry pi is connected to the network of another router and how come it be that once you have the wifi password you can connect to all of them?8 -
Pro-Tip: If you change your `div` to `li` and then decide to change them to `span`, check before you replace all lest you end up with `Navspannk` from ‘react-router-dom’. Why are my styles not working? Ah, they are ‘spannkStyles’ now.5

I just found out my router has 2 SEPARATE places where you can specify the DNS servers. So I changed one place but not the other, and they don't seem to be linked! Such bullshit design.2

Hey Guys
So... I Have a question / rant / frustrated commenting to do...
WHY THA FUCK DO FIRMWARE TAKE SO LONG TO UPDATE!!!
been configuring my webserver and 2 p2p cameras to access from the outside, and for each click or change can take 1 to 5 minutes to implement...
And then, like 6 or 7 hours latter I notice that everytime the port wasn't associated, a small label in like size8 text shows that port is already in use...
And... Da FUCK??
I'm associating the ports myself... how can port 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, ... be In use?
I have my server in 80, WebDav e another non relevant port, and trying to find open ports for the p2p cams...
Fuck I'll just delete all that services that no one uses and are pre configured, like, emule? napster? FifaPC? WTF? I never played Fifa, don't like socker. KaZaA SERVER? WTF why does this shit comes pre-configured?
Btw I'm writing this while I wait for the router to finish every time :p7 -
What the actual fuck, Cisco!? You have to buy a fucking license to use all the ports in a Cisco ASA router?

Find a good deal (as all providers are offering the same speeds/technology, all ASDL broadband is provided in the UK through BT landlines) to discover there is a mandatory 2 week waiting period to switch over ownership...
Fine, will wait 10 days for internet (torture except from dev rant on mobile internet, thanks for being text only), box arrives 3 days ago stating not to plug it in until activation date...
Fine I shall wait, today I get impatient and setup the router without connecting it to the landline so I can use the WiFi to connect to my Nas etc, login to WiFi navigate to Nas IP .... Automatic reroute to "login" page "We have detected your router is not connected to the landline, ensure your router is properly connected". Try logging into management site, works, change admin password etc. No setting to disable "self heal" functionality. No setting to setup static routes for my lab router, No setting to switch to modem only mode for when I inevitably buy a new wireless router for when this piece of crap can't handle the internal network traffic...
All this for a pitiful 10/? Mbps average, I want my fibre connection back :'(1 -
I hate the US education system, its just designed to fuel capitalism. It keeps getting less funding so that actually passionate, intelligent people get kicked out and replaced with people who only want to be a teacher so they can have power over others.
Why do they block news websites? Why do they block github, so their own robotics team can't even access the essential building blocks for the robot? They make everything more complicated and for the reason that it might distract you. Maybe just make topics engaging and not boring asf, just cramming for the exams so the school gets more funding. Maybe prepare students for jobs, allow them to do projects, pursue classes that interest them, and have any sense of individualism.
Anyways, yeah, the school blocked github so I can't do my FBLA project, I can't access the code for programming our robot for competitions, I can't even download software required for half of these classes. I have a Linksys router, is there any way I could set it up to bypass the firewall?15 -
Fuck this god damn router. Up to now I was really happy with the router/modem my ISP gave me (UPC Connect Box) but today I set up pi-hole on my raspberry and found out that I can't change my fucking routers DNS settings....11

I was in the network lab today, trying to wrap my head around basic dynamic routing protocols, but i could not ping the third computer..
30 minutes of frustration later I noticed while debugging the protocol, router 2 was ignoring messages from router 3 because it was not version 2...

My SO house installed broadband yesterday. She just told me that her parents turn off the router since the light was on. 😂😂I'm LMAO here.1

I know very little about networking.
So I've got this modem and I am trying to configure it, I am supposed to access to it through a web browser using its IP address. I pinged the broadcast to find the IP, but when I am trying to connect I have a nice "connection refused". So any ideas ?6 -
Yesterday was a thunderstorm. First my computer said good bye (still works tho, it lost power the moment i shut it down), after that the WiFi Router (which is dead now), and finally the mobile network. It was the biggest thunderstorm for about 1.5 years now.1

This Cisco router must be incinerated. Hangs everyday. DHCP server stops giving IPs. WiFi signal range is almost nonexistent.3

Im going through my router config yestersay and realize that in the security part an ip address is set to permitted.
Iplocation its a company that owns this other company which is my ISP.
Is it normal for an ISP to provide a router with a permitted ip address set by default?
Is this not calles a “porte derobee” (sorry i just know the french terminology,“sneaky doorway”)???4 -

Does any one of you own a Omnia Turris (https://omnia.turris.cz/en/)?
In our new apartment, we'll have a 1 Gbps fibre connection (not that we would realy need it, but hey!)
However we need a Router that suports Fibre. The service provider suggested a FRITZ!Box 5490.
I thought about getting the Omnia Turris and run https://pi-hole.net as DHPC on it and maybe add a proxy for TOR or install openHAB later on.
So if you own a Omnia Turris or know someone who owns one, would you recommend it? If yes, why? If no why not? Any additional things I should consider?undefined network open source hardware advice omnia turris service connection !rant wifi internet router2 -

Worst support experience so far: German ISP sent their cheap default router which I opted for, hoping that I didn't need to rent a costly FitzBox. Provider activates the connection, everything fine, but slow and unstable on my Linux laptop only. Try using their website, their support chat etc. as they made it very hard to even open a support ticket. I gather all the information, ping, traceroute, netstat, logfiles, router settings, broadband measurement etc. and finally manage to open a support ticket of my issue adn they say they will send an engineer to my place in about 4 days. I stay at home that day and wait for the whole day, nothing happens!
I get back to them, even get a phone call after waiting about 1h in the waiting queue, only to listen to someone tell me that the appointment had been cancelled as the ticket had already been closed. WTF! They said they measured my connection and could not reproduce any error. Did not even mention my lengthy log files etc. It took my own research and another hint that there is an incompatibility with that specific router and some specific devices so I should really replace their cheap router with a FritzBox device. What they also did not tell, that you dont need to rent their branded FritzBox, there are cheap second hand models from another ISP that you can reconfigure by simply chosing another ISP in a dropdown list that contains every popular German ISP. But why are they popular? You can only choose between the different bad ones, that's why they don't seem to make an effort.2 -
My new ISP's FTTH router is the most advanced I've ever had at home, but it doesn't allow changing the channels for different SSIDs.
I call them and they tell me the current firmware doesn't have the option because the connection is in beta test.
Great, now I can't have a guest SSID without channel overcrowding. -
Using a 3rd part library to manage drag/drop in wpf and then have to use router events because it doesn't natively manage commanding for mvvm pattern, then you write a commanding behaviour which works perfectly for everything else except drag drop because it's not part of the visual tree so binging is a nightmare!! 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡1

Why do I always default to formatting/resetting whenever I have a tech problem...
Android bootloop: reset device, lose all datas and reroot.
Root cause turned out to be need to uninstall Magisk first.

12pm: "2 hours 40 minutes"

After waiting 3+ years, I finally found custom firmware for my netgear wndr4700.
LEDE project(based on openwrt), you are amazing.
Now just to figure out the 10000 options i have now.
Anyone that can help me?
Per example, my router should be capable of 300 mbit theory and 200 mbit practical.
But the custom firmware says max 150mbit.1 -
I am creating a PWA using quasar, which uses vue.js at core.
Now the router is working fine. In production code, The address url is updating dynamically upon clicking route-links. Say, there are 4 routes, namely /user , /friends, /human, /robots. But when I visit one of those route paths using web address or say I reload the application/web page, when the route path is /robot or any other path, server reply with cannot GET /[route path]. I know that I had not set up the route handler at server, but I am not expecting this behavior. I dont want to make request to server like this.
While in dev mode, everything is working fine and as expected. when I visit /robot or any other route path , instead of contacting the server, it render the component that was bound to handle that route path34 -

Alright boys.. calling in my networking friends for help..
Recently switched my ISP and got a fibre optic installed (100Mbps).
Thr ISP provided a new TP-Link router which supports 5GHz as well as 2.4GHz.
Some of my devices support 5GHz and connect to that network which works flawlessly.
However, my phone does not support 5GHz and hence, have to connect on 2.4GHz.
Somehow, the main router as well as the access point, are not functioning well for 2.4GHz. Whenever the connection is established, it would work fine for a minute or two before the networks starts disconnecting.
Restart the device Wi-Fi and it works for few moments and the cycle repeats.
I am not sure of what is causing this issue.
For the records, the access point is an old D-Link router. Why I mention this? Because funnily whenever the access point cable is plugged into the main router and I login to the router, the system logs me into the access point router (D-Link instead of TP-Link).
Can someone please help me resolve this issue?
Fun fact: The D-Link was a giveaway by one of my dR friends @Bigus-Dickus5 -

Repeater + Android 4.2.2 + Android web server
Hey guys
I have a stupid problem.. Mas that is the opposite of everyone else (so no Google can help me)

How can I do this magic?

Can we invent a firewall which blocks out all the shit about: woke, alt right, left, right, politics in general, global warming, aging of population and the rest of scary or extremely divisive stuff? So my future isp Jio fiber is rumoured to be using DPI. Main proof comes when a executive said "It’s called Deep Packet Inspection, and what you can do with the analytics of that is mind-boggling," in a new article. https://reuters.com/article/...
Should I be afraid or am I just being paranoid. Also should I just switch to another isp altogether if they are using DPI.
Also mini rant :- They make it harder to use your own router by not allowing bridge mode on their router and custom onts dont seem to work. The best option is to connect lan port of their router to the wan port of your router and disable wifi on their router3 -
I had to contact my ISP's tech support because I suddenly lost my Internet connection. I explained to the guy who answered that my router was working fine, and that my devices could connect to my WiFi network, but they didn't have Internet access.
He was so confused because he didn't understand that WiFi and the Internet are not the same thing. He then made me reboot my router and reset my configuration (like I hadn't done that before) and eventually ran out of ideas and scheduled a technician to visit my house next week. What a moron -

what the f....
So I'm making some changes to my setup. I'm relieving my current router from its duties and retiring it as a mini PC for my desktop setup. And I got my hands on a Dell Optiplex that will become my new router.
Now, firstly, the Optiplex came w/o a wifi antenna. I booted it up into a LinuxMint install USB for the first time and didn't expect much from it, but to my surprise, I got a popup: "There are wifi networks available". At that spot there was also my Fenvi PCI wifi card's antenna of my current (soon-to-be-previous) PC and it was barely seeing any wifi, and there came Optiplex with NO antenna attached to it and it managed to maintain stronger and more stable signal. wtf....
Alright, it's Fenvi, it's chinese -- there's probably not much I should expect from it.
Then I hooked it up right next to my current router with an external USB wifi adapter having 4x6dBi antennas on it, serving as my current wifi AP. Trying out hostapd configs, searching for the right channels,... should I test it? Naah, it still doesn't have an antenna - it won't reach my laptop. Meeh, for shits and giggles! `hostapd -d /etc/hostapd/hostapd_custom.conf`, on my lappy `nmcli d wifi rescan; sleep 5; nmcli d wifi` and... wtf... To my surprise, the AP was there! A thick wall away, no antenna whatsoever, and I still could connect to that Optiplex AP and post this rant!
What magic is this??? I'm now a bit concerned about ordering an antenna for it - I'm worried it could either worsen the signal or make it so strong that it'll fry my brains overnight.4 -
About a month ago my grandfather gave me the okay to work on a pi-hole and attach it to the router
So I did that yesterday, and he yells at me for it (because having a civil conversation is impossible with him) and says that we don't need "extra stuff" and says that I'll break the router.
I tried to explain how the process works but I was just shut down and interrupted.
He could have at least told me he changed his mind so I wouldn't have wasted over two hours of my day building and troubleshooting the device.
Mind you, he literally worked in hardware for 50 years and has had ham radio as a hobby for over sixty. -
wow Xfinity just wow.... how retarded can you be... I ordered the "self install kit" which the person on the phone said included a modem, a router, and the cables to hook everything up... the package came, and it's just the cables. no modem. no router. just wow.

Was told the following by an "Information Security Professional"...
"RFC 1918 addresses will not follow a default route, default routes are only for internet bound traffic and RFC 1918 addresses are dropped by any router without an explicit route."

imagine a big network with mikrotik routers around. each user must login to the hotspot to access the internet (login page is always the same ip)
i am connected to one of those routers using winbox but i dont see any of those user/pass in the hotspot section of this router. and this router is the only router winbox has detected.
so... what am i doing wrong? where are the use/pass stored if they are not in this router? -
Apparently work in progress submissions of our assignments were graded by the percentage of their completion.
So yeah... there was no way of getting 100% unless you had the assignemt compete. Spoler alert! Nobody got 100%... even if all the assignment criteria were met.
And the best thing is that he got the percentages by asking each student after their presentation...
Now I get why he was boasting so much, that only few of his students get A. -
Just out of curiosity...
Is there a way to prevent a DDoS attack using settings in the Router? Like, changing the DNS Port to maybe 54 because most people just spam 53 with random packets?5 -

I have a Server with the IP address
x.x.233.61
For clarification, this is the public IP, it does not start with 192 or 172 or whatever local IP.
When I pinged 8.8.8.8 it said
From x.x.1.1: Destination Net Unreachable
After asking my Hoster what this IP address was, he said it would be the router.
In a traceroute to 8.8.8.8 this IP never appears.
Since these ping problems are now fixed, this IP never appears anywhere. If it really is the Server racks router, is there any way to get that IP in Linux?4 -

I was trying to set up my own "cloud" for iot experiments. I planned to use Intel Edison with mqtt broker (using mosca) and a node js app for providing API for mobiles and browser. And also to do other book keeping.
I spent the half day trying figure how to expose these servers to internet.
I configured ddns in noip.com and ddns settings configured to it in my router.
Port forwarded to the local server services I needed.
And then tested. Worked perfectly on any device in my router connected network. Tested on mobile network. Bam! It fucking doesn't work.
Then connected another router.
Double port forwarded. Again worked perfectly on router network. And failed on mobile.
Tested if ddns is right. Did nslookup it was fine as fuck.
Then disabled port forwarding. Did dmz. Nope. Nadda. No luck.
Then scratched my head so hard that I lost more already losing hairs.
Then remembered about router hardware firewall. Disabled it.
Tested
And there it didn't work.
My dreams shattered like a fucking deer hit by car on highway.
Didn't work.
Then I see the IP pointing to my router in nslookup. Its 172.20.xx.xx. Its a fucking private IP.
My Asshole ISP is running another private network behind firewall. Which I fucking can't port forward
Now I think how much of a noob and idiot I am. Fuck this shit. Fuck all of these shit.
I am going for SaaS option for mqtt broker.
(Or help me?)
Once again.
Asshole ISP.
Fuck your firewall.

So as part of my news years resolution, I thought id build an app and I thought I would build it in vue.js and native script with a shared codebase, I've started with a fresh project and already I have an error, one that I've not caused, this is in router.js. see if you can spot it.
module.exports = (api, options) => {
require('@vue/cli-plugin-router/generator')(api, {
historyMode: options.routerHistoryMode
};
export default new Router(options);
}
When I've fixed the syntax error, I then get, the error:
/src/router.js: 'import' and 'export' may only appear at the top level (5:0)
This is when I run "npm run serve:ios"
if anyone has encountered this, please let me know how you fixed this.2 -
How in heart is possible to work with a router that randomly shutdowns itself around 3/4 times a day without any reason. Leaving me without internet for 10-15 minutes. I called my ISP and they said that they don't see any problem and they will not send any replacement. I can instead fix an appointment with their technician to have a look at the issue, but of couse, I'm paying for him.
How about no? I'm going to buy a proper modem/router next month, this shit router they give you have 1/100 of the proper configurations options you need.2 -

specs:

4gb of ram
six cell battery(its a laptop)

I was going to go for free nas but I read that I'll need to connect the PC to the router via a lan cable, I dont have a router and very costly for me rn to purchase one.
I also feel like it will end in tears but I'll try

My network is somehow fucked up. VPN Client on laptop to my workplace is not connecting via wifi but instead connects when my phone creates a hotspot, while the phone is connected to the same router via wifi? Second laptop this occurrence.
When the work laptop is outside of VPN but connected to the router with wifi, about 50% of web pages are not reachable, same with my own PC and another laptop. Didn't touch my router in ages. Nice fucking conditions for wfh.11 -
And so again I'm here asking for your opinions.
My old router (linksys EA6400) had a meltdown yesterday and decided to lose wifi connectivity every 4-5 seconds for 4-5 seconds each time. So it was like 5 ICMP packets pass and then 5 fail, and this pattern held up through the whole day.
Did a hard reset hoping it will help. Little did I know.. Do you even imagine how fun it was setting it up with randomly not working wifi? :D And this router can only be set up over wifi. I had to count seconds in my head predicting when it will start losing packets. Because when it does - the setup fails :)
yayy!!
So I guess it's time to start looking for a new one. I barely use ethernet ports (one for RPi). But I do need a good wifi. AC is a must. AX is not since none of my devices support it. I'd also like it to have open-source firmware, maybe accessible via shell (100% dd-wrt/open-wrt compatible). A USB port would be a plus (for the RPi).
Do you have any suggestions worth looking at?
What do you think about WRT3200ACM MU-MIMO?
Also I came across something called MESH ROUTERS (wtf is that?). http://linuxgizmos.com/low-cost-802.... Is it worth looking at?
What would YOU suggest?4 -

I am working on an embedded system, a microcontroller-based design. The system has an Ethernet port. I am using NetX framework in the microcontroller firmware.
The DHCP Client is executed properly, an IP address is assigned correctly when connected to a router. I connect a laptop to the router using a LAN cable. Then TCP sockets behave the way they should, UDP broadcast behave the way they should. The only issue is, when I connect a Laptop over wireless to the same router UDP broadcast are received on application on Laptop, but data sent is not received on the embedded device.
Any idea why?

Laptop is Windows

I have a couple of "at risk" teens (I won't say what) who need an extra level of Internet filtering and restriction for their own protection against their use of really bad judgment. I've already enabled the OpenDNS parental control URL/content filters on my Netgear R8000 router but one of the teens has figured out how to install a VPN on mobile. I want to enable the router's OpenVPN feature for better overall security for all of us. But is there a way to block the use of an "unauthorized" VPN, like on a mobile device, without also effectively blocking my router's OpenVPN as well? I was looking at this post (https://community.netgear.com/t5/...) but wondered if anyone here has experience with this.6

So I a using the ssh installed with git on Windows.
I am trying to forward a port on my internal network server which is also my ssh server. I have exposed my network server on a forwarded port on my router. When I try to forward using this command I get a connection reset on my web service on my server.
ssh -nNT -p <port on router> -L 8000:192.168.0.22:8000 <sshuser@router>
I can log into ssh normally. So I am really confused. the 192.x.x.x address is the internal ip of the server. On a browser I try to connect to the 127.0.0.1:8000. It says the connection is reset. I assume it is being refused. So it tries to connect to something, but it fails.
I can connect to the web server from within the internal network via 192.168.0.22:8000. Really confused as to what is failing here.5
