Hi guys, I'm new here, discovered devRant randomly by browsing only. Bit sad I didn't knew about it earlier.
Greetings from France BTW 😄8
Hello world, I'm a 20 year-old CS student and I've been following you all from the shadows for a year now. I finally decided to join you, so here I am! I've got to say that I love this app and the community, so I'm happy to be part of it now. I'm currently on holidays, but I can't wait to share some good ol' rants once the uni starts again!
So, I found this community when I browsed the android app store this evening because I was bored.
Got immediately hooked and registered my own account. Reading here for multiple hours now.
Result of the evening:
- It is nearly 12:30AM now and I have to get up at 5:00AM and I still can't/don't want to sleep.
- Woke my wife multiple times when laughing about stuff posted here.
- I finally found a community on the web I can relate to
I think this was the best decision I made in days.
Thank you all already for the great time.
Happy to be here
(Addition at the next morning: sending this just now because I was not allowed to send already another rant when I wrote this earlier the night)7
Just want to say that I'm new here and hope we all will have a good time and can help each other.
Seriously ? Thanks for nothing ? Is this an appropriate subject, given that you are sending Thanksgiving greetings to your users ? Honestly I feel attacked. I'll probably unsubscribe and block them.14
Greetings from Denmark! Thought I would join after a lot of lurking, and tell a little story, as to how I fucked up when I started in my company.
I've been there around 10 days and had never used git besides just add, commit, and push. I was told to work in feature branches, and I did, I was playing around trying to learn, and got some merge conflicts, made a lot of unnecessary commits etc. I was told to clean it up before I merged into dev. And as I didn't know git I asked how I could do that. I was told I could force push in my branch, and that it was okay as long as it was only inside my branch. I tried that and saw my command line force pushing to all branches including dev, and master. My heart skipped a couple of beats, and I went directly to my Lead developer and asked what happend. He got a bit mad at me for pushing in dev and master, and override all the commits there had been made. I tried to explain I didn't he did not really believe me, I was so nervous. Luckily everything came back to normal with people's local branches being pushed etc. But that day I learned about git's push matching config, and my lead was luckily only mad in the heat of the moment and even apologized for getting mad. Just one of my little fuck up's in my short time as a developer7
Greetings from Greece! Except for one podcast I left all my dev related stuff at home to enjoy the sun😌
Hope y'all are having a great day!13
Who the fuck came up with the idea of using SharePoint? What it even is?! Is it a website, wiki, document repo...?
Our version seems to be a broken wiki with no info content, old links, illogical navigation. And somehow word documents are integrated into it. Sometimes you see some weird calendar and timelines (from old projects). You can navigate into a folder, but you cannot get back. There's no ".." button?? You can map it like OneDrive to yourself, but Windows doesn't support any document version control. Where's the check in/out option from explorer menu??? I sure as shit have those for SVN, GIT etc. Is there a new version created everytime I press ctrl-s or only when I close the document?
Well, I could open the document in "online" mode. Ok, the formatting goes weird and everything is super slow. But at least I can fuck up someone elses document by accidentaly copy/pasting stuff, deleting lines, hitting my face into keyboard etc. There's automatically new version added!
Somehow you can enable the forced check in/out for documents. Obviously only the library admin can do that. And since he's just a program manager, he has no clue what the fuck is version control or document management. So he has this thing on his "things to do" list. For him, document management means sending various spec versions as email attachments. And the developers can figure out together who has the most recent one.
How did M$ push shit piece of shit to corporations? They even use this crap for the intranet making it slower than creation of galaxies. Though it's ok, since you cannot find anything from the intranet. It's all just head honchos blogs, seasonal greetings and stock market statuses. Nowhere is seen the downstairs cafeteria menu for the day. Or where to report for broken toilet. You know, stuff that 99% of people would like to see.
I complained to M$ about the SharePoint, but apparently there's no problem. You can code it yourself? Yeiii! So, instead of just updating some line in design spec, I have to take a 3 month class and get a MS sertificate, code some class-based-web-shit for 6 months and maybe, maybe then I can make the page/document look normal?
I am thinking, that I will just start writing my specs on paper. I will put them on the shelf and if you want to read it, you will check it out manually. And if someone else tries to edit it while you are editing it, you just cover the paper with your hands. There might be a requirement to make the document look more like MS Word, but that's easy to do. Just go to WC with the paper and wipe with it a couple of times.10
Had to sticker these 2 up. Lenovo was Win 10 and the HP was Ubuntu 16.04. Gave the Lenovo away cos my sis needed a new laptop asap for her work with many clients. Wherever she goes, those two stickers on the Lenovo will be spreading devRant greetings/love. Told her not to take them off. 😁3
Greetings to all of you from sunny Dolomites! There is nothing like skiing with family on winter holiday.13
I hate the dumbass people that send on slack: "good morning", "good afternoon" or "how are you?" and do not say anything until I reply. If you do this FUCK YOU!! Just ask the fucking question. Now I just ignore everybody until the question is made11
Greetings @dfox @trogus, et al,
Here is some feedback with aspirations for the backlog.
I think it would be a good addition in the devRant UI if we could paste in code snippets and have that code display with proper fonts and syntax formatting, and even ideally with highlighting by language.
Currently, if we paste in any code or text for that matter it is translated into a sans-serif font (14px Helvetica Regular on webapp) which is fine for the poetic prose from our fine and noble devRant colleagues, but not ideal for shared monospace snippets of lesser and grand design.
Here are two websites that provide conversion of code snippets into formatted syntax, and HTML. http://hilite.me/ and http://markup.su/highlighter/
Both of these sites provide an API so highlighters can be used as a service.
Thank you @jaaku for your post, and welcome.
devRant for the win
I know stack overflow is filled with grumpy elitists assholes that will downvote or shit on your question, answer or whatever for whatever reason they can find, and that certain guidelines need to be followed to make a clear, comprehensible question, and I've accepted that.
However today SO hit an all time low for me when a post got shit upon for ending with "thanks In advance".
Have we really come to a point where even the slightest bit of courtesy is frowned upon?
Do we all have to become mindless fucking robots without any sympathy or gratitude?
Ofcourse I understand you shouldn't dedicate an entire paragraph to saying hello, introducing yourself and thanking everyone and their mothers. But what the fuck is wrong with a simple greeting or sign of gratitude.
I even found an entire discussion about wether or not greetings and thanking should be banned by rule. And that really upsets me.
Programmers, nerds and the like are already judged as generally closed people and antisocial. And that may be true. But are we really gonna let ourselves become even worse where we can't thank someone who helped?!
Fucking thank you for reading.
And to the grumpy old diahrea farts, I hope you and your devilish spawn live a life of endless loneliness and solitude3
Greetings everyone. I'm new here and also a beginner in programming. I just stumble upon the devRant and found myself entertained thus I've decided to log myself in. I'm quite a lost soul out here and still not sure if the path that I'm taken right now is the right one. Not that I don't enjoy it but sometimes it just get too frustrated and overbearing with all those "cryptic alien" codes that I'm trying to learn. I love to code but... sigh~ I never rant to anyone before since I'm quite a shy person and rather keep it in. So I try to rant it here. I guess that will make my frustration out of my chest? PS:English is not my native. I love the interface design. It's so cute. Not sure if this rant will be the first and last. I might regret this and will just continue to dwell behind the internet shadow.24
Let's share information! Communicate! How do we do it? Via email!
You got question? Send an emai!
You want to share some excel? Send an email!
Not sure who to ask? Send the email to everyone!
Have a 100 message long email thread and then need some help? Send the whole fucking thread to me and just add "what do'ya think?"!
Send some attachment in email and then 2 weeks later refer to it saying "but I sent the file to you!"? Well surely I can remember your special email from the hundreds of email I get every week.
I did complain to the mangers that why the hell do we have these mega-email-threads? Why do you send all the meaningles release notes to the whole company? The anwer is simple: all information needes to be transparent and if you don't need the info, then just don't read the email!
And fuck you, you CEO wanna-be who sends seasonal greetings through his secretary and thinks anyone gives a shit.4
The single most annoying thing about working with Microsoft is how they, at one point, decided to wipe 99% of their articles and downloads on their site. But instead of updating it in their OWN FUCKING OS, they just leave links to the broken pages in their help system. The second problem then arises when you realise that instead of giving you an error page, it automatically redirects you to the default page.
But on top of wiping their site, not updating windows to reflect those changes, and having a terrible site design, they have also decided that it would be best to keep the pages that once we're, online. This means that they will still show up in search engines, without any content being there.
Add to that the fact that their support team is incompetent to an insane degree, and often doesn't know what they're talking about. This has caused me so much frustration over the last few days.
Dear Microsoft, please get your act together and fix your shitty website.
A pissed of customer who paid money for your shitty services3
My first rant! let's see what is about!
Greetings from Venezuela, the oil and corruption country of South America...
Is it possible to become a good software developer just being constant, every day trying, even when you don't know what you're doing but, keep it up till you accomplish a goal? Or is anything more needed to succeed? I mean I'm trying to make my first desktop app and sometimes I feel like fck! I'm leaving this... I'm trying to dominate the software development process to get better a better job, in here or out there... But geez its hard...
Well, I want to believe that maybe someday I will become a good software developer...
First rant without thinking too much...10
Thx for everything devRant :) most of all to @dfox for making this possible greetings from Poland!1
People complain about the high RAM usage of IDEs in general, particularly Jetbrain's one.
... They have never experienced Google Chrome ...
Greetings from vacation btw ^^4
Can you think of how weird it would be that someone greets you with the word "Moin"? Welcome to northern Germany...11

PS. I use Arch btw
By:Miss. Lucia Wright
Punchline : VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE MY DEAR
My greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I am sister Lucia Wright I am married to Archdeacon. Collins Wright whom until his death served as an archdeacon in the St. Micheal's archdeacon in Ivory Coast for nine years before he died in the year 2005. We were married for eleven years without a child. My Husband died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days.
Before his death we were both born again Christian. After the death of my Husband I decided not to re-marry or get a child outside my matrimonial home which the Bible is against. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of $22. Million in a security and finance company in London for safe keeping.
Presently, my Doctor confirmed to me that I have serious sickness which is cancer problem. The one that disturbs me most is my stroke sickness. Haven known my condition I decided to donate this fund to a church or individual that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct herein. I want a church that will use this fund for orphanages, helping the widows, propagating the word of God and to endeavor that the house of God is maintained. The Bible made us to understand that? Blessed is the hand that giveth'. I took this decision because I don't have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I don't want my husband's efforts to be used by unbelievers. I don't want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly way,
this is why I am taking this decision.
I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord. Exodus 14 VS 14 says That? the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace'. I don't need any telephone communication in this regard because of my health hence the presence of my husband's relatives around me always. I don't want them to know about this development. With God all things are possible.
As soon as I receive your reply I will give you the contact of the security and finance were the amount sum is deposited for you to contact them, I want you and the church to always pray for me because the lord is my shepherd. My happiness is that I lived a life of a worthy Christian. Whoever that Wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and Truth. Please always be prayerful all through your life.
Any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing another church or individual for this same purpose. Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I Stated herein. Hoping to receive your reply. Due to present condition of my health,I was warned by my doctor to avoid receiving or making any call. For that,I have submitted the information of the deposit to my lawyer, As soon as I hear from you I will forward to you the lawyer's contact.
Remain blessed in the Lord,
Miss. Lucia Wright.
Well ok... If you want me to, I can surely help you out 😈😈😈😈😈6
That time when you are coding and you recieve your free stickers. This is going to be an even more awesome day!
Thanks a lot team dev rant! Greetings from Argentina.
PS: yes, that's a Mario cup ;)4
I just woke up and in my whatsapp there was rhe following message of one of my friends:
"Hello how are you? I have to ask you a favor, ca you check if in my facebook profile is hooked up a hacker? A person told me that but I don't trust at all! Could you please check and let me know? Meanwhile I closed my profile, if I have to open it again let me know, thanks and greetings"
I think I return to sleep1
Noob here! nice to meet you :). Hope to learn python!
Thank you so much and greetings from florence, Italy :)8
The programmer is seated behind the piano.
He then looks at the piano keyboard and explains:
'The keys are quite uncomfortable, the distance from the up and down is very long...'
But it's awesome that the shift can be pushed by the leg.
Greetings from Estonia1
My greetings from Asia. It's finally here... Thank you devRant! Can't wait to show those stickers to my friends.1
Oh my god, I'm basically at the verge of self-destruction! I've been trying all day to set up a simple Node server with react, but it's never that easy, is it? You need Babel to transpile ES6 + JSX to ES5, and then you need Webpack for god knows what reasons, and there are so man configuration files and options, and there are 1000 tutorials with 1001 ways to do something. I've created probably 20 new project because when I complete a tutorial and try to do something on my own, all hell is loose and I get some cryptic error message and am unable to ever get it to work. Holy cow, I need a drink... Am I just a retard? Greetings from Norway, by the way!7
Thanks #dfox the Stickers and DEVRANT are awsome!<3
happy codeing and best Greetings from Hannover, Germany :-D1
Morning guys. How are your desks? Do you use normal desk or maybe standing one? Do you keep your desk clean or maybe it's more like a mess? Haha!
If someone is curious about my hardware on the photo:
- Dell XPS 15 9550
- Marshall Mode Headphones
- 16gb pendrive that's in business card format but just the important part of it as you can see
Post your desks!
Greetings from my coding buddy cactus 🌵13
Just wondering if there are people that have the 'is it g-i-f or g-i-f' problem with 'g-i-t'.. 🤔
And greetings from Sibiu, visiting the tiny ICDD congress here.4
Greetings my good people.
I'm currently making a Calculator app. Is there any suggestions you can give me.
I've already added, Square Root function, Factorial, Area of Circle, Volume of Cone, Decimal to Binary function, temperature convertor, and BMI function.9
New to this app, and new to my PHP programer job .
Which types of projects/tutos can I do to increase my level quickly??
Greetings from France!9
Well, few days ago I got mine free swag. The stickers look AWESOME!
I really do like them, but since we have holidays, I'll put them on my notebooks in the next school's year.
Greetings from Gdańśk, Poland. Have a great holidays y'all reading this right now!4
Isn't it weird that some parts of the world have crossed over to the next decade and some haven't. (If you consider 2020 the start of a new decade).
Anyways cheers to the end a year and the beginnings of a new one. Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year4
Figured I would post this here, rather than the rant section. Just wanted to say hello! I think this community is awesome, and I am excited to be a part of it!2
finally after months and months of just planning and doing boring stuff a piece of code that was really just fun to code and plan for some days:
i just wrote my first "real" parser for a simple DSL. so much fun! i just really can recommend that to everybody.
i've use a parser combinator. the concept of this parser combinator ist to combine simple parsers (like when it starts with a number or a "-" and continues with numbers then its an integer etc) into a big one. i've written it in c# and used "Sprache" first and after some time i switch to "Superpower". a really great lib, but lacks a bit of documentation. anyway, i've your're interested in these things and want learn how your "daily code" gets parsed i would recommend that to you! :)
greetings to all fellow devRanters and happy coding / parsing! :)1
Had nice nightly writing session with some good ol' Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, so when I just moved to the monitor I still had this music in my head:
[Whatsoever I've feared has come to life
Whatsoever I've fought off became my life]
"Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile."
Just to see this:1
Greetings to my fellow developers and also my friends which I consider you all to be to me!, so very recently I stumbled upon someone by the name of ‘George Hotz’ I really think thats his last name but anyways to continue!.
I watched many of his coding streams (he seems to use python all the time) so friends, He seems to be pre good at what he does, and it really inspired/motivated me to learning python, and I really hope not for the wrong reasons 🤓😅, so how do i go around to getting onto that level of being a python dev? Just some back story I started with c# then went to c++,
Personally I’m finding it quite the struggle to understand python😅, I’m currently trying to learn by using a book called head first in Python, i personally love how the book is made through many pictures and less wording :D , and also i use IDLE which looks to be a learning given by python 🤓
So everyone, I’d once again like to say thank you for reading my very long message or post, I appreciate your time to read it also! I know i seem to ramble on alot but my bad 😅, i hope you have a wonderful day/night wherever you may be ❤️
First version of the devRant-Webhooks Front-End is up!
You can access it here: https://devrant-webhooks.clan.rip/
Would be nice if some of you could test it out, look for security leaks and generally give feedback!
Next Part is the actual core of devRant-Webhooks, which listens to events and executes the webhooks.
I found this on a social network. The error says "Type the password twice". Then I replied "The password must be twice".
Kindly have a look into the project and drop your feedback on the same.

Hi!, Greetings fellow ranters,
I got into thinking this past few days. Because over the years, i really wanted to start my career as a freelance web/mobile developer, i'm not planning to quit my job(yet), but i want to slowly but surely build my freelance career. I just need some advice from you on how i should optimally or best approach this goal, and where/how should i find clients or what sites should i find clients, i know freelancer.com but I've heard other freelancers who had nightmares with it, upwork is also kind of overcrowded.14
Sometimes, I feel my school is a prison.
I'm sitting there, 8-10 hours per day, learnin' things I already know, and all I can do is sitting quiet to `don't disturb during the lesson`. I can't even use my laptop.
But, school also is nice in some ways, my principal allowed me to run a Hacktoberfest event in my school, make kinda radio in our school and make an app for our SmartTV (yep, we have a TV in school) to show weather, changes in lesson plans etc.
But still, I really feel this is the prison. One more year, and I'll finish this shit and go...to another school because `you need to graduate to do anything in your life`. Btw, do ya know any good ways how to become CTO or COO one day? Just asking. Greetings, I hate my school, have a nice day.9
Where does devrant for Android store downloaded images? And yes I allowed saving and storage access.
Android data folder is empty. Bug?
It did work before i switched to Android 8. My new phone is also android 8, and it also does not work.
Greetings guys and gals.
I found an old laptop of mine and since I don't really use it anymore, I want to try "the linux" on it.
My question is, what's a nice linux distribution to make the windows transition smoother.
I have a vps so I'm not afraid to use the terminal.
I just want vscode and a browser on it, no gaming, no video editing, nothing fancy.
What would you recommend for an programming aprentice?
Dedicated server (DS) or shared hosting(SH)?
A DS is more expensive, but i could learn much more in Ops. Shared hosting is cheaper (and i already have a virtual one with access to root, but no sudo)...
- Greetings from switzerland.
PS i only choose swiss hoster ;)7

Greetings guys, I am just going to my first assesment day and I have no idea what to expect. If anyone has any generic advise i am all ears. Its for a junior java dev. Thanks in advance
Subject: a rant for devRant
Not entirely sure why or when exactly it happened, but after I joined mailing lists I have a pet peeve for people who don't use a proper subject line, or don't use email when I literally made a mail server for that purpose (some organizations really prefer calling apparently). Is it really that hard to summarize a message in one sentence? Hell half the time even the message itself is just a few sentences.
Also the greeting and salutation at the beginning and end of email messages. I find them so redundant. Has anyone ever gotten any meaningful information out of "Hello", "Greetings", "Dear", or something like that? Or "Best regards" or whatever. I get that it's just being polite but it's so meaningless! I really don't like using them anymore. Just a message block and who it came from, that's all it needs to me. Instead pour some effort into the damn subject, the title of whatever drivel you're putting out there! Or replying to an email *only* when the subject matter is still related! Or actually replying to the damn email if it's still that subject matter...
I probably sound like an old man, but seriously.. email isn't a hard concept once you "get it". Anyone can write a halfway decent letter, why isn't that the case for email?
