Mother-in-law: "How will you sustain a family, you just play video games all day" — "I make your monthly teachers salary in four days"

Girlfriend: "I learned some Lua today because I needed a world of warcraft extension for..." — "I love you too"

Dad is also a dev/architect. Mom barely knows how facebook works. So essentially she thinks I'm either playing games or working hard. Dad knows I'm just playing games.

I came from a village, we have animals (like a farm), pigs, chicken, sometimes duck and goose. One day I had to work from home, bc had to come back to parents house. Our daily skype meeting was like this:

* what I hear in headphones: collegues and boss LOLd sooo hard *
me: ffs, what ducks?
grandma: did your father not give you the guys number?
me: * starting to sweat * what guy? no he didnt, i have no idea what youre talking about
grandma: * disappointed * then who gonna order them...?

grandma: * standing next to me, she hears the laughter * whats that?

since then, if im working from home every skype meeting starts with "Tommy, is your grandma there? HAHA!"

My mom saw my code 3 or 4 days ago and she said 'are you working for ISIS?' 😕

I'm a lawyer, like a year ago I was home alone (wife and kid went on the trip) and from boringness, I decided that I should learn to program (was thinking about that earlier because of some ideas for apps I had - I was fucking naive then :P).

So I start googling best way to do it and I decided to start CS50 course on edx. And that was a real blast for. Best learning experience ever happened in my life.

Anyway, I was going through CS50 curriculum (at the start I thought I will quit it after few weeks) and every day was like so exciting. This whole programming thing seems like the best thing happens to me in many years. There were so many interesting things to learn, I felt like I discovered whole new word.

So after few months while I was finishing CS50, one day I decided, fuck it, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life (I'm 35+ btw ;)). I chose frontend path as it seems easier for a person without technical education. If everything goes as planned I will start looking for a job at beginning of next year. So where I the rant you could ask?

Well, you should guest what my family thinks about it. My wife was like at first: I'm proud you learning something new, now she hates it, making fights about me always sitting in front of computer (which is not true as I learn most in work in my spare time - I can do it as I work on my own), she even told my parents that I cheat her because she started family with a lawyer, not a programmer (supposed to be joke, but really not fun for me) . WTF - where is the fucking support ? ehhh. My parents on the other side still don't believe I will do it (after more than a year of my learning) and they still think I will quit the idea in the end....

So thats it my rant about what my familly thinks about me become programmer.

My mother is the one that introduced me to computers from a young age. She would tell me that they were the future and that people could do amazing things with them. Fast forward at me graduating from uni with a B.S in Computer science and she was the happiest :) she tells everyone that I am a computer scientist, she seldom says "programmer" or "developer". She is super well versed in general computing and can use Linux and Mac, so yeah :) mom is awesome. My dad has lil idea of what I do, to him its just magic, my step dad is the same way but he will be the first to tell everyone that I am a wizard.
My brother and sister could care less...my sister tells everyone that I am the smartest person she knows, but that I spend most of my time glued to the screen "playing with a bunch of weird code!"
The rest of my family is pretty meh about it, 2 of my uncles are super proud of it and normally ask for my input regarding tech or about life as a dev.
Finally, the wife. The wife knows how to code from before I even knew what code was :) so she knows exactly what I do :)

I already wrote one rant about how my family deals with me being a developer, but this rant I wanna dedicate to people close to my family and what they actually think...

Earlier this year I ended school, so I was supposed to find a job. Well...I live in region where only small IT "companies" exist. It is really hard to find job as a developer around here. These small companies either do not want to hire anyone or they just hire people with super amazing university or just family members and friends. Anyway, I did not want to move to the capital city, so I just kept seraching...and that is how this family friends started to be fucking toxic.

While searching for job everyone just kept telling me how am I lazy as fuck and will not just go digging fucking drains or work for minimum wage to some korean shit company around here. Of course not literally, but I can see when someone starts to look at me as I am completely crazy. Our family lost many fake friends who just do not understand because of this. But it did not ended here...

When I finally found a job 1.5 month earlier, I was so happy. Job from home in relative good company. Ho Lee Fuk! Nobody believes me I am actually working. People look at me as I am a lazy fuck laying all day in bed and watching fucking TV. I am done with these dick people.

End of story.

My family is pretty clueless about what I do, but they are genuinely curious. My mom especially. She always asks questions about stuff I'm learning and tries her best to understand.

I might do a little course in programming for anyone in my family who wants to learn. Helps a lot in how people solve problems, and would help reinforce my knowledge.

Question is, do I teach them a low level language like C, or something that's a bit easier to understand, like Python?

Literally anything but work with computers, I think. They ask my brother to fix anything technical in the house and ignore it when he fails. They haven't been able to watch TV in six months. When I suggest that my (well-intentioned but mostly nonverbal) sibling probably shouldn't go into development, they tell me I don't know my own job. I suspect they're convinced I do graphic design.

I write C++ applications that run physical simulations and sometimes train AI models for pattern recognition and highlighting unusual incoming files.

They suggested I go to an undergrad program for data science. I already *do* data science for money and I already have an undergrad degree. 🙄

My dad thinks I write a hundred characters which seem like an alien language a minute. My mum thinks I'm just 1 click away from hacking Pentagon. My step-dad, someone who knows computers a tad, knows I'm just typing random stuff hoping it works and he knows for sure I do not have a clue how it works.

Family:

My family thinks than I can do Uber (eats), Facebook and WhatsApp but better. And than I'm lazy because I don't build those "obvious" business opportunities.

BTW I'm mostly web dev, sometimes mobile dev on a small company.

The thing is that I have told my family a few times what I really do at work. But I have to be honest: explaining what a backend dev does is hard without showing a GUI 😂

My family is very supportive. My 2 aunts are working in technical fields, and at least 2 of my cousins are working in IT and one cousin is studying CS too. My dad works in IT and since I started my studies he always talks to me about his work, when he finds errors and bugs and rants about his colleagues :D He also helped me debug some code. My mom is supportive too, but sometimes when I mention to her that this and that is hard she goes: "Oh, what did you choose?" (Rhetorical question)
But all in all I'm happy. Reactions of "outsiders" are those which bother me sometimes. But that's a different story.

So, I recently picked up this book called "The Phoenix Project". I picked it up as I thought it was a project management text book. Turns out its a novel on how this Auto parts company's IT department broke down its silos and embraced DevOps. It's even framed as a thriller - the stakes always get higher! Extremely Exciting!

My Wife, kids and I listen to the audiobook as we drive and do errands every day. My Wife has gotten a very very frank understanding of what my job is like as a result.

Before I finally managed to move out of my parents' place, they nonstop kept annoying me by saying I should get a "real job". They thought I was only playing games or browse random unimportant stuff on the computer...

General approach : I'm wasting my time by just sitting in front of computer all day. Since I'm freelancer, almost all of my work can be done at one place. They think, I should get a REAL job.

When they need help with tech : I'm the guy who knows everything about tech and can fix their mobile, printer, toaster, washing machine and nuclear warfare.

When it comes to admiring what I do, I'm just a useless piece of shit but, when they need technical assistance I'm their lord and savior!!

I started programming when I was 12, my parents saw me on websites and games, so their first thought was "he's playing!"

My dad knows what I do and he's proud because I finished uni (he didn't), he sometimes asks for help (he repairs electronic stuff) and I try as hard as possible to be useful (it's fun!). He knows that (most of the time) I'm working when I'm in my laptop, so he doesn't bother me, he kindly asks if he needs help with something.

My brother's studying the same I did, he's doing fine. I think better than me when I started.

My sister knows that I can repair her phone/laptop but she asks me to do it whenever I have free time and how she can avoid to "damage" it again.

My friends think I'm awesome, but I'm in constant stress (thanks imposter syndrome!).

My dog, he just barks and smiles whenever I'm around and he thinks I'm awesome, so I have that going on for me, which is nice.

Actually I feel I am prety lucky about the relationship between my yamily and me being a dev. My dad is a developer as well (in fact, he was the one who taught me most of what I know today; not as in general coding, but good and bad programming practices, tips what to do next ...) and my mom just started learning Python.
So they know prety well what it means to be a dev and have quite realistic image of what to expect.
To be fair, I am still the one who usualy fixes broken printers and replugs unplugged ethernet cables. but that is because I enjoy doing that. I take it as a challenge for myself to figure out what/how/when went something wrong. Most of the times I try to figure that even without touching the broken things.
Anyway, getting off topic.
Alltogether I don't think that they have too unrealistic expectations, but if I had to chose one, it'd be my learning capabilities. I can't learn complete java in 2 days ...

First of all I want to say that I like how much this group rant is inspired by people complaining about their parents last week. (there were a lot)

Whenever I wanted to proudly present my family something I programmed they just answered (and that really infuriated me) "Just don't do anything illegal, ok?".

These words held so little appreciaten for what I would invest so many hours into because I love it so much...

My dad just thought I'd grow out of my "gaming and PC 24/7" phase and didn't really care about the Tech. But when I started studying to be a dev he gave full support. "Do anything you like except ride motorbikes, do drugs or be a sailor, so long as you can sustain yourself" was the message carried across generally.

Both my parents are engineers of sorts, so they are surprisingly understanding of my work. 😁

The most stereotypical thing you can think of, they think I sit on my ass all day procrastinating.

My parents think that I type on my laptop what I have been taught at university and that makes me a programmer. Lol.

I'm a terminal-guy. I prefer to live inside my terminal. When my family sees me with the green-on-black, they think I'm up to some nasty stuff like hacking / cracking emails, facebook, bank accounts, etc. Only people who understand to look at the terminal realize it's just a few monitors and log tails running. Sometimes, maybe elinks or vi running as well.

My parents "know" that I build websites. The funny part is the "how" I build them. For them, I call obscure forces and make a sacrifice. And thus, the website is done. So they don't really know how I do it, but I have their deepest respect and pride. Plus, I don't get to fix anyone's printer / computer 😍

Week80: Not my family or friend, but last time I used my notebook in a bus to school when I had to finish my homework (because as always, literally evrything is more interesting than programming class homework) random woman came to me, nocked on my shoulder and asked when I had terminal open when compiling "Sir do you know that this is not legal?" pointing at my screen. 😂

My familly thinks that I am a magican that can fix their printer and recover their desktop icons "because I did something wrong with it" after not touching their PC for months. I wonder who deleted those icons (*pointing finger at my father*)

My friends think that I am some magican nerd who can build websites for them all for every single stupid "teen business idea" they have and I can hack all their ex's FB. 😂😂

My dad asks me to rip YouTube videos to DVD...even though I bought him a Roku.

I guess he likes having a contingency plan.

My mum was programming at high school. It was COBOL, but she never used it again. So thats how she lost every sense for programming. Even like 2 months earlier, she thought I am just playing games and watching videos, but then we finally had a talk and she understands now. I am happy.

One of my relative thinks I spend all my time googling and searching the web. She thought that another relative of ours was also a programmer because he does the same thing. He was a commerce student.

- the guy who fixed mobile devices
- the guy who knows (must know) about mobile phones (which I personally can care less)

My grandmother thinks I 'program' remote controls and other electronic tools.

Here is how I imagine they see it:

I go to work -> *I stand in front of the computer all day, typing stuff* -> I get paid

Mine actually don't know shit about what I do but they don't try to describe it either. One day I told my father that as a personal project I was making a little script to fetch song lyrics and assign them to the music files I have in my library. Well he was all surprised like "Wow, and you can do that sort of thing?". Well, yeah, what do you think I've been studying during all those years? 😁

Either "He's addicted, he only plays on the Computer" or "Hey, you know some things, can you help me repairing my Computer?"

My mom thinks I fix Wi-Fi and computers.
My dad's thinks I setup TVs and fix phones

Repair printers... Somehow writing code translates to the ability to fix any printer problem in their minds.

My family literally knows nothing about development, programming, computer science. It's bad. The closest anyone in my family has come to understanding is a distant cousin, who is an IT lead in Healthcare. His mother told him to call me because some fucking piece of shit at his job purposefully mucked up an internal ASP.net app on his way out. Sure, I had nothing better to do than to phone debug your shitty app with zero context. Great.

My wife is the one who comes closest to understanding in my immediate family* but even she admits when I come home ranting that she has absolutely zero idea what I'm saying.

It great though because I get to use her as a living rubber duck that just stares at me with a blank expression. Then at the end of describing a complex problem I'm trying to sort out she just replies with some encouraging thing like, "I'm certain you'll figure it out."

My parents on the one side love my passion to programming (it’s actually because of my dad who introduced me to computers), but on the flip side they think that I should focus more on school - which is true, but you know... It’s hard to stop with something you like, isn’t it?

Exactly as it is developer. My father is really interested in technology and has worked with developers on his old company. My mother had developer friends. So I'm really glad they understand what I'm doing and why I'm doing it.

Sitting and making mobile phones do what i want. When i tell them what i really do they just say:"I don't any word you say, but i think it's good!" 🤔

My family had a very good understanding of what I'm doing.

My dad is working at a big software company as project manager (he himself did code years ago, but it's actually a physicist).

My mum is a language teacher, but has taught herself web design while she wasn't working in her job (taking care of us kids) and was working as self employed web designer from home for some years.

My youngest brother is studying business informatics.

My other brother is not studying anything technical, but very open minded towards these topics and has good knowledge about it.

My grandparents believe what I told them: "I (read as: software developers) create everything that happens in your computer after you've turned it on."

My family thinks I sit in my bedroom office doing unintelligible things on two computers and complaining about crazy clients.

I'm the first person in 4 generations that works in a tech/hands-on area.

Everyone in my family works in media, sales, diamonds, law, business and teachers(in Yiddish it's called Luft-gescheft- air business)

They have no clue what I'm doing and how I got where I am and see it as a waste of time.

My parents actually know pretty well what I do, my mum used to take a course on web-development.
But my grandparents ... they think I somehow 'talk' to the computer and make it do what I want it to ... may also be important to note that neither of them ever touched nor used a PC.

tl;dr: My grandparents think I am some kind of PC whisperer forcing PCs to do my bidding.

Mom: I type weird characters called commands all day to make computers work.

My dad understands what I do (or maybe he thinks he understands, but close enough). My sister just thinks I'm tech support, and any Word or Netflix related problems go to me, even though I've never used modern Word, and I can't stand Netflix. My dad's fairly competent with computers, so I don't get many questions from him, other than the occasional "how do I do this probably impossible but actually kind of clever thing?"

Develop Facebook, eBay, printers and do nothing all day

My dad used to write DbaseII programs for the Marines in the 80s (logistics officer, was moving the batallion’s local copy of maintenance records to digital in parallel with the mandatory file card system), then went on to manage enterprise-level software development programs as a government contractor when he got out, so he has a pretty good sense of what goes on in my small, 1-man web shop, and has even advised on best practices at times. Mom knows the basics from years of observation.

Recently my dad also became a business partner in a venture we’re working on launching, so for that particular project he has a *very*clear idea of what goes on and where things are at.

Personal tech support

They think I am responsible for every website and app out there. (Ex. Can you make Facebook do ~insert ridiculous request~?)

Umm... NO!

They know it has something to do with creating and modifying software. That is enough for them and so I am seldom bothered with requests for detailed information.

Also, most often, me working on hobby projects, or just viewing tutorial videos at home is looked upon as "Wasting time playing games".

Then there is also the perception of me being the family's in-house tech support guy.

Oh they just think I spend all day on Google and curse at my monitor a lot.

They think I sit on my arse all day and do nothing 😂 then sometimes think I’m really clever and good at computers lol

Family - "You might be a great coder, but if you dont have a degree, you wont get respect"

Overall, my brother and family are very supportive. only thing i dont like is their strong thrust to get me graduated and pass the exam, despite my negative interest in the course i am enrolled into.

I am into programming, not because of money, that is flowing around it, or the present day trend. Infact programming was not my field of interest, even though I was always interested in computers and machines. My first choice was to become a mechanical engineer. But i got enrolled into Electronic communication course.
Only after sophmore year, i started getting interest in programming.

Programming, to me is a very powerful tool. You can create what you want.

My family is well aware of what I do. In fact 2 of my siblings are web devs too! For my mom, she knows I make websites, but she thinks it's something I do which is really a hard thing to do.

My family has been very supportive, but mostly ignorant about my journey to software development, and tolerant of all of my fuck-ups along the way.

Yet they don't dare to even think to know what I am doing, because every time they asked me, no matter how well I explained, they never got any of the intricate parts of software development.
They know I make software. They know about the usual stress that comes from organizing projects, planning, maintaining infrastructure, but to them, it's as if I build buildings or I'm like a single-man conveyor that creates cars. It makes sense, and they will never understand how I do it, and they don't care.

Useful whenever anything slightly techy needs care or fixing..
Or anything heavy needs carried..

Otherwise just the guy being bashed "lovingly", usually about "get a real job" or "gym/computer addict"..

Doing magical things and hacking the world. They don't understand it maybe never will but it's ok because they respect what I do :)

But the good part is that they kind of understand, whenever I start a new project, what I'm doing and calmly hear me as I explain them whatever I'm working on.

Well my dad is pretty supportive and asks about it sometimes, my grandparents kinda the same. My mom pretends like she's listening, but mostly she's not. Most my friends don't really care that much either.

My parents know that I work with "codes" in computers to make all sort of things 😁. My siblings have some idea of what programming and software engineering is. They tell me that it is fun (they have tried it), but they still don't value it that much 😕

My family think I'm just looking all the day at videos and posts. And spend all my free time on internet.

My parents like it because pays the bills easily and helps fixing their computer.

My brother, sis-in-law are developers too so they know what it is

They dont know a thing. They think i work at a call center or i just play games instead of work. And whenever they see the terminal its just "did you break your computer? Why there is too much text?"

When i enrolled for cs degree, mom tells her friends that i won't /don't need an office, she says that my office is in the laptop and the bag..

My family mostly get it because my uncle is a solution architect. They probably still dont realise just how complex it can be though.

They don't really know what I do, I guess. They listen to me with patience when I explain them something about what I'm doing, they forget what I said and then tells friends, coworkers and costumers that I'm a computer engineer. And also I can install Linux on a computer.

They think i build medical software prototypes. I build medical software prototypes. They also think their job (teachers, all of them) is much harder, because i only type some stuff, they are also correct on that part.

I am going to school for a BS in computer science and the other day my dad tagged me in a job for IT. Spent the next couple hours explaining what my job actually is.
