Gentlemen,
Please take a look at the enclosed hard drive and let me know if you'll be able to transfer files/software from it onto a laptop. If so I'll send you a laptop so you can get it done.

my mother brought me a external hard drive.. she asked me can i check what is wrong with it.. i opened it up and i just began to laugh9

Friend: Hey, can you fix my laptop? The hard drive is almost full.
Me: (Looking through his folders) Maybe it's because of this. Why do you have 3000+ files in your downloads folder? Maybe I should delete some of this.
Friend: No no, please don't touch the downloads folder, I have some very important documents there.
Me: Why don't you move them to a separate folder then? You should organize the ones you actually need and delete the rest. This folder is a complete mess.
Friend: No no, the problem is not the downloads folder, there must be something else. Can't you just uninstall some programs to free up space?
Me: I could, but I don't know which ones you actually use.
Friend: What? You should know!! You studied computer science for this!!
Me: First of all, there is not a single class in the whole 4 years of university called "How to uninstall programs and free up space on 128GB hard drives of shitty €400 computers". Second of all, I don't know why you were expecting me to find a magic button on your laptop that immediately frees up all the space in a hard drive without actually deleting anything. That's not how computers work, you know.
Friend: Hey if you didn't want to help me you could have said so in the first place.
Me: FML18 -
I FUCKING HATE how I always have to prove my abilities twice to everyone just because I sit in a wheelchair!!!
I mean if the people on the street treat me like a child it's hard enough... they might just be afraid of the unknown or simply stupid... but at the office?
You know what I do for a living... What on earth would make you think you have to treat me as if I have some kind of cognitive disability as well?
I am going to roll/drive over the next guy who does something like that!!!
Sorry for the non dev rant but this had to get out48 -
Love how a teacher of mine described IO wait for CPUs on a blackboard.
"That's calculation time." *draws three small lines on the blackboard* And this is IO wait. *draws a really long line, goes out of the class, out of the school, comes back* "Yes, this is IO wait. No matter how good and fast your CPU in your gaming PC is, if your hard drive is shit, everything is shit."5 -
*tries to convert a Windows drive into btrfs*
*copies the whole 1.4TB of data back from server*
Windows: Wait, you expect me to do more than browsing the Phasebuk and playing games? Over a million files?! No no no, can't do that.
*reboot after BSOD*
Ehm, a hard drive you say? A drive that I just fucked up? What are you talking about? I don't see any hard drive :/
Piece of shit.
Crappy Arch Linux laptop: ah, I see a new hard drive connected here. Limme mount it real quick for ya :3
Me: eh, not now. I want to format it first.
Linux: oh, cool! Your wish is my command <3
*formats hard drive to btrfs*
Me: alright, now please copy all that 1.4TB onto the drive and please don't overheat _/\_
Linux: Gotcha! On your commands sir!
See the difference? The mental communication level? Windows is like talking to an obnoxious grade schooler that just does whatever the fuck they want to. Linux on the other hand is so much more mature and capable. Guess which one I like the most.20 -
Don't tell them to run "rm -rf /" as root. That's too nice. There might be inodes left on the hard drive.
MAKE IT WORSE:
"cat /dev/zero > /dev/sda" as root.

TFFW you regret the decision of using “truecrypt” on a hard drive back in 2012......... and then forgetting the key...92

Sister comes into my room
"Can you look at moms laptop, it stopped working I'm scared I broke it"
Ask why
"Idk it just stopped working, all I did was install adobe flash player I dont think that could do it could it?"
Top kek
Take a look
"EFI IPV4 0 (error code) failed to boot"
Weird. Enter bios
"Hard drive: [Not detected]"
Well, that's no bueno
Pop open back, hard drive is loose
Pfft, push that fucker back in
Boot -> works

Last year I got an Acer notebook from a guy that stated that "it isn't working". "Okay" I thought, let's boot it up.
> Screen turns on, no splash screen, no hard drive activity
> Well fuck
> Tries to enter BIOS, nothing
> Openes case to reset CMOS
> Nothing
> Okay I think I need to flash a new BIOS
> Acer support site
> "Download the exe to flash the BIOS"
> What
> Spend two hours researching
> Find out that you can flash via USB and by pressing a key combination
> Extract the BIOS binary from the exe file
> Flash it on the notebook
> Splash screen and working BIOS
> Yay!!!
> No bootable devices found
> Fuck
> Connects hdd with test bench
> Completely fucking dead
> WTF
> Order a new hard drive
> 3 days later
> Install hdd
> Install Windows
> Finally working
WTF did you do to this notebook to not only mechanically break your hdd but also fuck up the BIOS completely??!!13 -
At my previous job, the person in charge of the Phabricator server didn't have a backup system in place. I yelled at him until he implemented one.
He had the server perform backups to the same drive. I yelled at him again, to no avail.
Well, after awhile the hard drive started failing, and it would only boot intermittently. After a lot of effort, he was able to salvage part of the backup data, but no more, meaning we lost a lot of bug reports and feedback, and developer tickets. We were able recover all of the older lost tickets from a previous server, so overall the loss was pretty small.
But I think he learned his lesson.
He definitely learned to listen.6 -
Continuation of my post about my classmate who wanted to look "hacker" by dual booting his debian with windows but ended up partitioning his entired hard drive.
He got debian to work, he opened a terminal and asked me what should he type to get all the "Hacker Tools" *cinges into orbit*
Guess what i told him to type in... ;)9 -
I'll get to my four words in a sec, but let me set the background first.
This morning, at breakfast, I fired up my trusty laptop only to get a fan failure warning.
Finally, after the three year old is asleep tonight, I'm able to start dismantling the case to get to the fan. I'm hoping it just needs cleaned out.
Hard drive, memory, and keyboard spread out over the kitchen table. I'm not even halfway done.
Guess what? Now I'm one of the lucky 3500 people to have a power outage at 9 pm. Estimated restore time: 2 am.
Sigh.
"All those tiny screws"
And a three year old in the house...18 -
My bio professor has a word doc called passwords that she keeps on an unencrypted external hard drive.
She leaves the hard drive in the room with all of her other stuff when she goes for a break between classes.16 -
My 1.5 year old 1tb SSD just died unexpectedly. (Samsung EVO 850). It might be under warranty yet.
Fortunately the only data I lost was my debian install, some steam games, bookmarks, and a few unfinshed projects.
I kept everything important on a backup spinning drive -- which is also dying. Joy. But I might be able to save its data.30 -
What I did wrong during my home office cleaning session this morning:
- put soap on my mouse mat
- snapped my enter key
- vacuumed up my F8 key
- absent-mindedly cut my ethernet cable
- lost my zero key
- dropped my backup hard drive (data was recoverable, but I need a new drive)
- lost one of the nose pads on my glasses
- got a cocktail stick stuck in a USB port
- exploded my mouse by using the wrong type of battery
Things I did good:
- nothing11 -
Straight from a marketing analyst (we didn't have a PM) I once had the displeasure of working with:
"Can you write a JavaScript that will scan a user's hard drive for credit card numbers and autofill the checkout form on our client's web site? I think it will increase their conversion rate."
The guy didn't believe me when I told him it was impossible (barring exploits that would break the browser's sandbox), unethical, and probably illegal. I had to escalate all the way to the CEO to get him to drop it.6 -

Literature classmate saw my OS and asked me what it was. i told him it was Debian, he then told me that looks "Hacker" (i cringed all the way into orbit.)
He tried to install debian so he can pretend to know shit. And ended up partitioning his entire hard drive! Hahaha18 -
1. Just because it sounds cool doesn't mean it is.
2. Automate all the things. If you can see everything from cli all the better.
3. If it isn't commited and pushed, it doesn't exist or won't after a hard drive burnout
4. Everything on your workstation should be quickly reproduceable or in a git repo.

It's raining. I love it.
It's foggy. I love it.
But I live in a desert and nobody here seems to know how to handle the rain, let alone the fog. (It isn't hard, people!) Last night during my ~30 min drive home from work, five separate accidents/collisions happened just a little ways behind me because it was raining. Now it's foggy, too.
I have to go to work.
I'm scared.12 -

My stickers just arrived. And I especially love the encoding of “ß” within the street name.

I almost did rm -rf / as root on my computer, but Ubuntu actually stopped me from doing it, even as root, saying it was too dangerous. Props, Ubuntu. You saved my hard drive.9

Last week my brother was visiting. I did some advanced partition management for his girlfriend (preparing a hard drive for backups) and used a Linux live system with gParted for that.
That's when he said "I guess it's time, that I get into Linux - what do I need to get started?".

Just spoke with a guy who considers himself a PC expert.
He: You can always recover your offline data from your PC, even if you burn it.
Me: You just need to remove your hard drive.
He: Even if you remove your hard disk, offline data can be recovered from from RAM memory.
Me: WTF?? * Trying to explain him that RAM is a volatile memory*
He: Yeah but you can recover it from the BIOS.
Me: r u serius right now??
And I can continue, because we've unfortunately talked for about an hour.
Why these people consider themselves experts and why the fuck do they have to teach you things that the don't know. FML5 -

Yet another rant about crappy electronic designs.
Just now I was cleaning my desk and stumbled upon some old hard drive in a caddy that I still had laying around.. I figured, let's plug it in and see whether the drive still works. And to some extent, it does! Except that every few minutes it craps out on me. And after disassembling the caddy, I think that I know why.
Just as background information, hard drives work at 12V and generally require about 10W to spin their motor. Meanwhile USB operates at 5V. So a boost converter needs to be present in the controller to step up the voltage and power the drive.
Now what's a boost converter? It's an inductor, a capacitor, a transistor and a diode in a specific arrangement (if you're interested in the design, check out https://youtube.com/watch/...), along with feedback circuitry to stabilize output voltage. Now that transistor is important.. it switches at very high frequency, and its rise and fall times create heat. In the particular transistor used in that controller, it apparently causes the transistor to operate at 65-68°C. That's quite toasty IMO, and overheating may be why the controller is so unstable. But the Chinese manufacturers thought that it's just fine and okay to be sold without heatsink or some research into transistors with better rise and fall times.
So the hard drive craps out on me and yet again it's because of certified shitdesigns. MOTHERFUCKTURERS!!!!27 -
Me: I've been using ubuntu with i3 for 6 months. Is awesome. Everything works great.
Brain: Have you seen debian or arch linux. They're better than ubuntu. Just try' em
Me: Brain shut up. I don't have time to reinstall everything + I'll 100% fuck my pc up. I'll do it another time.
Brain: Trust me. I know what's better for you. Try it now
Me: No.
Brain: Pleeeeease.
Me: Ok fine.
Me: Now windows doesn't work, debian doesn't work. I need to format my hard drive and do this shit all over again.
Brain: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Hey. Install arch linux.9 -

I literally cannot get this computer to boot from ANYTHING other than its hard drive.
I want to boot from a usb flash drive, but the bios doesn't support that. it supports standard and 120mb floppies, ZIP drives, usb floppies, usb cd drives, etc. but not a generic USB drive. You'd think the bios developers would have heard of them back in 2012, but they also refer to Windows as "window os", so who knows.
I changed the boot order multiple times to include everything that might possibly include a usb flash drive, and then just tried all of the other options as well. No luck. Everything just booted straight to Windows.
Okay, that's not exactly unexpected, so I found a boot manager that allows booting to usb drives, and burned that to a cd. I made sure the boot order included "CDDRIVE" first (and "USB-CD" second just to be sure), and tried again. The bios refused to boot from the cd because it's in a cd/dvd drive, and cd drives are VASTLY different beasts than dvd drives, apparently. Like, it didn't even ask the drive to spin up! It just booted straight into Windows.
After a few more reboots (and quite a few middle fingers), my dvd drive magically appeared in the list of allowed boot devices. Why did it just show up now? No clue :/ I'm just happy it's there.
So, I pick that, save and exit, and wait for my shiny new boot manager to pop up. The cursor flashes a bit, moves around, and flashes some more. Then Windows starts loading.
what the crap? why?
So this time I disable booting from the hard drive altogether. In fact, I disable everything except the dvd drive, because screw this, and save/restart for the twelfth time.
Windows greets me.
Again.
What the hell?
At this point I'm tempted to unplug the friggin' drive. If Windows still greets me after that, I'm just going to check myself into an asylum and call it a life.
But seriously.
Either the boot manager in question is triple-faulting and the bios is transparently failing-over to the previous boot config (Windows), or said boot manager is just like "yolo!" and picks Windows anyway.
If a different boot manager doesn't work, I'm totally out of ideas.
Edit: disabling HD boot entirely and removing the boot manager cd also results in Windows loading. It's like the bios is completely ignoring my settings. :/16 -

TLDR; My 2TB HDD got wiped in one fell swoop by a 9-year old child.
You know... I've never been too great about keeping backups. Even to this day, I only keep one or two local backups and nothing on the "cloud".
So this was about 5 years ago. At the time, I was living together with my girlfriend - who would later become my wife. She had a son from a previous relationship, who at the time was 9 years old.
I had a small desk in the living room of our one-bedroom apartment, that I used for my computer, which has been a laptop for a long time now. One unfortunate thing about the layout of the apartment was that the wall plug near my desk was attached to a light switch.
I had a 2TB external hard drive - with its own power cable - plugged into my laptop. Then, things started to move in slow motion... The GF's son comes inside from playing, my GF asks him to turn off the light. He reaches over, and shuts off power to my laptop - and the external hard drive.
He must have hit that switch at JUST the right fucking time. The laptop ran on battery, no big deal. The hard drive, when I powered it back up - was wiped clean. I tried data recovery on it, but the HDD was encrypted, which makes things more complicated.
Needless to say, I was not happy. I never got that data back, but I did learn not to expose my hard drives to 9 year olds. Very dangerous little creatures.
You want to know the best part? He destroyed another hard drive of mine, a few years later. Should I tell that story?5 -
My younger brother let my HDD fall down to test how hard it is.

I can't sign my git commits anymore, and I can't revoke the key either.

I wrote in a rant here that I couldn't access my 1TB external hard-drive anymore because I refused to "Safely remove" it from my computer.
My brother sent me today an image with it, showing me that he managed to open it.
I can't tell you how happy I am!
The solution: if you encounter the same problem (it takes forever for windows to scan it and you can't open it/ on linux it tells you to go to windows and and properly eject it), just go to `Device Manager` and `Scan for new hardware`. This should find it & solve it3 -
I think Suicide Linux is a little heavy handed. Really? One mistake erases your hard drive? Please, let's make things interesting.
I would rather use Casino Linux.... try your luck. Any mistake sets a random single bit on your computer to 0. You could be lucky and it would set unused memory to 0, doing nothing. When I was a young boy and I was writing my first programs, I remember I was sad because they were fast, unlike other applications I used daily and admired, with their long splash screens and the hard drive constantly making noise whenever you performed an action. It's fun to see how things have changed today: ensuring performance is a critical part of my job, and DAMMIT WHY HASN'T THE WEB PAGE LOADED YET?!?2 -
My Dell Precision M4700 is going to complete 6 years of faultless service, still my main workstation.

My friends computer had a dead motherboard, so I chucked his disk into my PC to copy his files to USB.
We turned on the computer after plugging the drive in, and it showed up in Windows explorer. At which point I was thinking sweet this will be easy. But when I clicked on the drive to open it, the screen immediately blacked out with a pop. I look down at the PC and see smoke pouring out of the hard drive 🤔😯. I didn't know it was possible to literally fry a hard drive, I think I'll just stick to software after this...maybe I should be booted from Linux USB in the first place \_(ツ)_/¯
Thankfully my friend wasn't too annoyed as he had a recent backup!1 -

Always back up your data.
I came to my computer earlier today to find it on my Linux login screen. This could only mean one thing: something went horribly wrong.
Let me explain.
I have my BIOS set up to boot into Windows automatically. The exception is a reboot or something horrible happens and the computer crashes. Then, it boots me into Linux. Due to a hardware issue I never looked into, I have to be present to push F1 to allow the computer to start. The fact that it rebooted successfully, without me present, into *Linux*, could only mean one thing:
My primary hard drive died and was no longer bootable.
The warning was the BIOS telling me the drive was likely to fail ("Device Error" doesn't really tell me anything to be fair).
The massive wave of panic hit me.
I rebooted in hopes of reviving the drive. No dice.
I rebooted again. The drive appeared.
Let's see how much data I can recover from it before I can no longer mount it. Hopefully, I can come out of this relatively unscathed.
The drive in question is a 10 year old 1.5 TB Seagate drive that came with the computer. It served me well.
Press F to pay respects I guess.
On the bright side, I'll be getting an SSD as a replacement (probably a Samsung EVO).8 -
My new motherboard (MSI Z170 GAMING AC) reports temps for the memory, CPU, GPU and hard drive in °C. And the motherboard temp in °F.

This is a follow-up of my last rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1323422/...
TLDR; My step-son tripped over my HDD power cord, sending it plummeting towards certain death.
So this is just over a year ago. At this point, my GF and I are married, and she's about 7 months pregnant with our daughter. Her son, Nicolas - the one from the last rant - is 13 years old.
So it was a Saturday, and I had Nicolas helping me to clean up the apartment. My wife was off the hook, because, ya know - she's pregnant.
While I was cleaning the living room, I had Nic cleaning the kitchen/dining room area. At this same time, I had my laptop and a 3Tb external USB hard drive on the dining room table, copying a bunch of data or something. This external HDD also had it's own power cord, which was plugged in next to the table.
Next thing I know, I hear an "Ohp!" followed by a crash. It was the horrifying sound of my hard drive plunging 36 inches off the table towards certain death. And death, it had.
Before even checking, I knew this HDD was dead. It took a lot for me not to snap at the kid. I told him to get out of the kitchen and go clean his room. That hard drive... hadn't been backed up. At all, which is on me. Even more so, since that data was really irreplaceable.
Even knowing that the HDD HAD to be dead, I still plugged it in, hoping for a miracle. I got nothing, it wouldn't even spin up.
$ dmesg -w
Showed that linux saw the USB controller and even the HDD controller (it printed out the manufacturer, SeaGate). The data was valuable enough that I was saving up some money to have the data recovered, which would be about $2,000.
However, before I had saved up enough money... My apartment was broken into and all my external HDD's (and some internal ones I had laying around) were stolen.6 -
One of my hard drives S.M.A.R.T. said it could fail anytime and I should backup my data. I cut all the files to a new hard drive.

Should've saved those files on the cloud...9 -
So Microsoft, you tell me that there is a known bug, if you have Windows 10 with the newest update installed on a SSD and Apps running on another hard drive?! And this bugs causes random freezes of the whole PC from time to time?
WHAT THE FUCK?!

Someone I know quite well just told me that they have a hard drive with a S.M.A.R.T warning and "the internet says" that he can fix the problem by running this amazing built in windows tool called "chkdsk" (he literally learned about this today, as a long-term windows user) or by reformatting the drive.
I've told him that neither of those methods will work, since it is a hardware fault that is being reported by S.M.A.R.T.
He said that there is hope that it'll work, since someone on the internet said so.

A Gentoo installation might be fun, but it sure as hell isn't worth it, both in time and effort. Broken audio, broken video, broken stability. A broken kernel that doesn't recognize the hard drive or the network interface. And half a week to compile the fucking thing and it's still not done. This is not the right distribution for me.2

Shootout to my 2.5GB Maxtor hard drive, that I heavily used between 1997 and 2001. There were no USB drives, and CD burners were too expensive for consumers. So I used to open my PC case, remove the drive (along with Windows and my software), bring it around at my friend's house and have fun while copying hundreds of mp3s, patiently downloaded from filesharing and 56k modems or ripped from CD audio, in and out.
One time it fell out from my desk, hitting hard floor big time. I thought I lost it forever, and basically my whole PC in it. Then I tried plugging again its IDE and power connectors, and it was still working! ... well, half of it. That badass still continued to work with one of its two platters crashed, and got some more mp3s with it.
Maybe I still have it...1 -
Dual Boot Linux & Windows.
I hardly ever see anyone do it right. And there is just two tricks that make a completely new experience out of it. I am not sharing it with you to be nice, I am sharing because I am curious if you're already doing it.
1. Install on a second hard drive, not a different partition. Learn which button to hold on the boot screen to select the boot drive. You can still chain-load via Grub, but the major advantage, updates of neither OS will fuck up your boot loader. You can update it abso-fucking-lutely risk free. Second advantage, advice 2. becomes trivially easy.
2. Set up a virtual machine. Select as its hard drive the raw disk volume where you have installed your Windows. You can do this with VirtualBox, but QEMU with virtual machine manager make is far easier to set this up in. You can now start Windows under Linux as a virtual machine. You can always start a small application, but the big deal is installing. Start a Steam download, have it installed and ready without switching over. Running windows updates. And when you then have time to play the game, just reboot and you have it already installed.
I feel like many are not aware that you can start a virtual machine of a real hard drive. It's one of those things that improve usability of it enormously. It's something where many will just not think about it because they keep dual booting and virtual machines in two different categories in their brains, but immediately will think it is obvious as soon as they hear about it.
So, who already did this? Raise your hands!25 -
Conversation that probably went down when they designed the pc case I use:
Person A: You know what we should do, we should design quick-release clip things so that you don't have to use tools in order to install or remove a hard drive.
Person B: That's a great idea! Should we also have the opening for the drives to slide in to on the side so the user has easy access to the drives. Or at least make the front panel completely removable for this purpose.
A: No, let's have him remove the fucking gpu in order to install a new drive.
B: That sounds impractical!
A: Fuck it, you know what, lets design it so bad that even that won't be enough. Let them take out the fucking whole motherboard, so basically let them disassemble the whole working pc in order to add a single drive! That will be hilarious! -
So, this poor fucker right here has spent 3 hours straight trying to install KDE Neon AGAIN, FOR THE 14TH TIME AS OF TIME OF WRITING on an old 0.5TB hard drive with some GiB-wise partitioning size and apparently the disk doesn't like it.
Can someone give me a dildo so I can fuck myself more because life is not fucking me hard enough? No lube needed kthanksbye11 -
I have a second hard drive called "Windows" on my main system (for dual boot).
When I unmount it after I had to access it via Linux it says "You can remove Windows now".
Makes me smile every time.1 -
Best Hardware support team.
I hope every one of you got such team.
My keyboard was not working properly.
programmer's most used special character ; is auto typing anywhere that is obviously keyboard issue so I called H/W support team.
me: *explained above problem.*
supporter : Ya we know that issue ,YOUR HARD DRIVE IS CORRUPTED. We have 2 option
1) either we can formate your system.
2) We have to change hard drive.
Me thinking : *devrant stuff found*
Me: that is really sad part. How many time you solved such problem?
S: This is my first time in this company ,previously I solved such issue more than 10 time.
Me: you really look smart.
S: thank you,any how I will resolved this issue today.
Me: today I am going earlier but yes we will meet on monday. thank you for quick response.7 -
<senior dev turns around..making some small talk about the weather and such.. then>
Senior Dev: “Yea, I’m wanting to take my hard drive out of my desktop and put it in my laptop”
<I know his personal laptop is an older 13.3” dell>
Me: “You have a 2.5” laptop drive in your desktop computer?”
<gives me a very puzzled look>
Senior Dev: “Um…no.”
<second or two of awkward silence>
Me: “Well, a desktop hard drive isn’t going to fit in your laptop.”
<gives me another very puzzled look with a touch of annoyance>
Senior Dev: “It might work.”
<senior dev turns back around>
Why the –bleep- do people talk to me!? Now the rest of the day all I want to do is take his computer away from him…poor thing…that little guy has no idea what his owner wants to do to him .7 -
Never buy crappy, consumer-grade SSDs for use in production servers/RAIDs. This might sound obvious but at the company I used to work for, through a series of bad decisions by management and cheapness, we ended up with the cheapest consumer SSDs you can imagine powering all of our storage.
This turned into a nightmare spanning years of failed hard drives and a continues cycle of ridiculousness. Drive failed after a few days, gets taken out, sent back to manufacturer and then replaced with another equally crappy drive destined to fail within days/weeks.
Our ops people were going to the data center multiple times per week to replace failed drives. Lesson I learned: cheaping out on system-critical hardware and software can have long standing consequences and in the end usually doesn't end up actually saving money when you account for time employees have to spend dealing with issues that result from it. -
Last week my university decided to give away old hardware to students (CPUs, displays, keyboard, mouse, speakers, printers etc.). My roommate got me this beast. I was so excited and decided to boot it up only see to GRUB error 22 :( I think the hard drives were wiped before handing it out.
I've never set up a server before and I've been trying to boot up an Ubuntu server via USB drive but it's not detecting the OS installation files. I've been searching all around to make this work but it's not fucking working. I don't have any other cables or CD drive to try something else. I want to make this work. I have exams next week and I can't stop thinking about this. Godammit8 -
My grandfather gave me a laptop of a friend of his, to install an OS.
His friend had a new hard drive installed and apparently they sold him an SSD. He told me that the company that installed it, told him that it was better because it was more expensive.
Of course, an old fellow needs SSD for simple things like YouTube and such.
#firstworldproblems #ssd7 -
Took me awhile, and 3 reinstalls but I finally got my second hard drive on Linux, Kubuntu with most of the things I use to code here and zsh on powerlevel9k. Yey!8

I pressed "update" on windows 10 and its been runn..
Wait nevermind, it finished in about 5 minutes on my old dual core laptop with a 5400rpm hard drive.3 -
Hard drive head crashed and corrupted my entire android app source code which took my 5 months to build. I was depressed for 2 days and then started working for it again and updated the app on the store in 3 months. It was a terrifying yet amazing experience. Definitely don't want to go through that again.
Now I keep backups on the cloud. Lesson learnt.7 -
I was working on a game, and my monitor randomly blacked out and my computer stopped dead. My lights were still on so it wasn't a power cut. I look at my computer and I noticed it's completely covered in Diet Coke. So, I take it apart and cleaned them inside out, whilst I waited for any drying. I stole my dad's desktop and just put the hard drive in. Continued coding. So I guess the moral of the story, don't spill Coke on your PC.2

Bought a new hard drive, it's great and all BUT WHY DIDN'T THEY INCLUDE A SATA CABLE!!??
now I have to order a SATA cable and wait 2/3 days -.- I just wanted to increase my home server storage...2 -
I think my hard drive is going to die.
My laptop takes 15 minutes to start up and it takes a fucking long time to open any program but once they're opened they run pretty well... And it does since two weeks ago!
This is a hdd related problem, isn't it?13 -
After fighting with Kali I was finally able to boot into it and install it on a 2nd hard drive on my 2010 MBP...6

My grandpa thougt me assembler when i was 7, I modded an hard drive with him (multiple write heads on one disc). Then i learned pascal. As my fathel work at sap, i got a free webdew course. And now, im "learning" c++ (rather sharpening my skills than learning)4

I was cleaning up my hard drive and deleted some old directories.
I was notified that my backup just started and wanted to look how far along it was.
However, instead of 'ls -l /mnt/DATA/Backup' my shitpile of muscle memory typed 'rm -rf /mnt/DATA/Backup'... That's when my harddrive suddenly had 750GB of free space and I decided that I probably need some sleep.
Before any of y'all wanna lecture me on off-site backups, funny thing: Today I implemented a new daily backup routine (praised be borg) and therefore deleted my somewhat chaotic Backups on my NAS "Because if shit hits the fan, I still have my local Backup"2 -
So, unlike normal people who just click on an mp3 file in windows explorer, I'm listening to music saved on my windows hard drive, accessed via an sshfs mount, using VLC running inside a HyperV linux VM and Xming/pulseaudio to make it show up inside windows like a normal window and play sound.
Why? Because this is my replacement for WSL which broke (Good Job on the updates as always, M$) and I'm celebrating that I got everything* to work.
* Nevermind the hours I wasted because I forgot to add a rule to the windows firewall allowing pulseaudio to connect and the fact that Xming can't handle vlc playing video7 -
I kept piling on hard drives at home and you know... One day I'll setup some redundancy.
Then a 5 months old full 4TB drive gave up and I lost that data.
After that I've upgraded to having a ceph cluster storing everything.
At the beginning of this year one hard drive in the cluster gave up. I didn't notice until I wondered why available storage was low. Cluster had already rebalance itself and were running flawless.2 -
I literally only wrote one line of code today. Don't ever start your day off by saying, "I think I'll make a quick backup of my primary hard drive."1

Suicide Linux:
You know how sometimes if you mistype a filename in Bash, it corrects your spelling and runs the command anyway? Such as when changing directory, or opening a file.
I have invented Suicide Linux. Any time - any time - you type any remotely incorrect command, the interpreter creatively resolves it into rm -rf / and wipes your hard drive.
It's a game. Like walking a tightrope. You have to see how long you can continue to use the operating system before losing all your data.
Please install: https://qntm.org/suicide9 -
>Why is chrome making my computer turn off all of a sudden?
<Boss, you have a quite old iMac with fully updated chrome, which is known to eat RAM. PLus, you've been using that computer as a donkey to do video editing, even tho it's not made for that (looking at the stats), and you have your home folder on an external hard drive, plus like 10 other apps always active, including premiere, illustrator, airmail (with 12k emails always loaded smh), slack on 2 workspaces and at LEAST 12 chrome tabs on some of the heaviest websites
>Mmh... yeah you're right, I'm kinda asking for it2 -
What was the most rubbish developer you had worked with?
I will go first , once I worked with a Dev who used dashes for naming variables (eg _ = 'a' , __ = 'b', ___='c'), placing every everything in the main class . We were working on android (java) project back then. He decided to place everytime in the main activity, rewriting redundant functions. And he never use git, he literally use hard-disk and Google drive to back up his code which made us difficult to know which part of code he wrote. I quit working there because he was the Senior Project Manager.6 -

Coworker: I've been working on this computer for an entire day now and it's still having issues
Boss: Well, we can give the client an option to get another SSD and clone to it before reinstalling the OS.
Coworker: But he doens't have an SSD...
Boss: Yes he does
Coworker: *opens computer* let's see, two 1TB hard drives... but no SSD... Oh, there it is. It's hidden. But it's booting too slow to be....

New hard drive!
Finally replaced 5yo one after Linux started crashing.
Lost Windows BCD!
Gonna have to restart with Arch Linux + Windows
Sigh...5 -
I remember the first time I was experimenting with Linux and decided to install Kali Linux (was still version 1 at the time) and in the process cleaned my hard drive. I was in first year and I hadn't been introduced to git, so you can imagine what happened to my code.
Or when I dumped all my databases into one SQL file (the feature looked tasty in phpmyadmin) and then after reinstalling everything, I couldn't import back the files.
Or last year, where I was on industrial attachment. So we were to delete some data from DHIS2 manually. So as a developer I grouped all organisation units to be deleted under one parent and wrote a python script to recursively delete anything in that group. Just when I was about to show my supervisor how efficiently my script was deleting stuff, he said, "Don't delete anything yet". I hope he doesn't read this *wink*
Fast forward, last week on Friday I dropped my external hard drive. It just works on one USB port now, no idea how and why. -
Person: "Can you speed up my computer? Don't delete anything though."
Me: "Your hard drive is at 99%... you need to get rid of some stuff."
Person: "Can't you do it with out deleting anything?"
Me: "We can move it to a cloud service..."
Person :"No, that won't work. How will get my stuff back?"
Me: "Nvm..."2 -
I lost 2TB of family photos and videos a few years ago by dropping a single hard drive. Nearly all of it was later found on people's computers who forgot to clean them up when we got the NAS. I'm not so eager to delete data once it's backed up ever since.3

At one point, my laptop's hard drive went down. Turns out, windows had written some garbage data to the mft, and fucked up the file structure. Luckily i was able to restore a big chunk of the data using recuva. I cleaned the disk after saving the most important files, cleaned the disk, reinstalled windows. All good so far. I put the laptop's drive and my recovery disk into my desktop to put back the files. During the install in forced me to make an account, which I wanted to delete. So I ran "rmdir /users /s" and went to grab a cup of coffee. Turns out, cmd was pointed at my recovery disk instead of my laptop disk. My whole backup wiped.1

RONALD REAGAN VIRUS: Saves your data, but forgets where it's stored.
MIKE TYSON VIRUS: Quits after two bytes.

DISNEY VIRUS: Everything in your computer goes Goofy.
PROZAC VIRUS: Screws up your RAM but your processor doesn't care.
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER VIRUS: Terminates some files, leaves, but will be back.4 -
No wonder why Google Chrome takes up alot of RAM when running, I've just seen chromiums dev requirements:
System requirements
- A 64-bit Intel machine with at least 8GB of RAM. More than 16GB is highly recommended.
- At least 100GB of free disk space on an NTFS-formatted hard drive. FAT32 will not work, as some of the Git packfiles are larger than 4GB.
- An appropriate version of Visual Studio, as described below.
Windows 7 or newer.8 -
I DROPPED MY HARD DRIVE ENCLOSURE WITH MY ONLY BACKUP ON IT ONTO BRICK AND NOW IT MOUNTS.
WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING7 -
i had to deliver roughly 250 gb of data. after two days he received it. on a hard drive. by parcel service.
sending it online it would have been done by the next but two weeks. what a brave new world. (still better that uruguay)4 -
When the company my mother worked for was arranging computer courses and could not leave the computers in the borrowed classrooms.
They brought them home and I got to play with them :)
Sinclair ZX80 with 512 bytes of RAM (no hard drive, diskette or CD).
This was 38 years ago ;)6 -
A few days after the vacation, daddy (me) finally finished copying all the photos from the digital camera to the big external hard drive. Left it lying in the living room, in the corner where all the tech stuff frequently lies. In come my boys, and I'm not sure why, they start plugging power supplies around. Unfortunately the one from the laptop fit into the hole on the external disk, but had a different (higher) voltage. Result: 1 fried hard drive, containing all the baby photos and videos of said boys up that time.
I still believe that it's only the circuit board that is fried, and the data is still all there. I still have the hope to find a used disk, replace the board and all will be back.5 -
I have used Mac since 2011 and I have made statements about how Windows PCs sucks.
I had to buy a Windows-laptop for engineering school and I have experienced problem after problem after problem.
It took about a month to get the right computer (I ordered online and they missed to add an extra hard drive).
I had to return the second one after 10 days because it was not able to boot.
The third one I had to send to HPs repair place in Poland for a week, because the “X”-button” did not work properly.
I have not used the computer for a couple of weeks and now I was going to create an Android Studio-project and found out that the extra hard drive is missing! (Not physically missing, it does not show up)
When I bought the computer I had to portion the disk, but this time it is not showing up in that tool either...17 -
Friend : Bro, give me the game you were playing yesterday.
( Witcher 3)
Me : OK, tell me your system specs.
He: 1 TB hard drive and 8 GB ram.
Me : GPU?
He : 2 GB Nvidia.
Me: Model?
He: Don't know something like 740m ( M you heard that right)
Me : Won't work. GPU is not powerful enough.
He: You don't know anything, it will work. You also play on same GPU with 2 GB.
Me: -.- ( I had gtx 770)7 -
Recently got a new widows laptop, I was so excited.
Spent a free hours trying to fix the hard drive which is spinning at 100% making the computer slow... still haven't found the problem.
So I coded on a Mac instead
...and then I found 20 dollars4 -
What a fucking weekend. Tried to clone an existing windows hard drive onto a new unused one with the same size. Oh the adventure that I got myself into. 😭
Old hard drive corrupted in the middle of the process (how???). Not bootable anymore (until at the very end).
Then an odyssey started to try to rescue the old data using my spare linux drive onto a USB stick. Fucking with uefi settings and apparently a boot sequence with incorrectly named drives (?).
Had to reflash a usb stick I had for linux installation to windows installation.
I had multiple drives attached to my PC and didn't want my own ones to be overridden, so I needed to detach all drives except for the target one.
The target one had already fucked up partitions from the failed cloning, so I had to research the tools to fix it manually, not knowing what I was doing.
At the end it worked out, windows installed, data copied onto the target.
The old drive was able to recover, but I didn't give a shit about it anymore.
Was a sleepless night, spent wayy too much time with this...2 -
I've made a fucking retro game and it takes too much time and effort to make this thing when I complete my game I showed this to my cousins and their first words was it is too boring anybody could make it could you make something like pubg or fortnite when I listen to these words they were fucking demotivating and made me drive crazy I don't know how do I explain them how much hard to make something like this.14

For awhile now, my hopes for humanity just being in a rut, soon to receive some motivational kick in the rear or the helicopter parent trend, skyrocketing over the past ~20yrs giving rise to snowflakes and seemingly imminent social\financial doom, keep going steeper downhill.
The overuse and\or reliance on, both term and tech, AI has been particularly disturbing and painfully ironic...
Seems it's overwhelmed my, typically instant, reslisations of severe head-scratchers that have nothing to do with AI and even, apparently, denote actual honesty and effort employed.
today, within moments, quickly scrolling on eBay i found 2, new to me... which is quite rare, perplexing 'wtf's.
1. a laptop clearly stating, multiple times, reiterated, not copy\paste... that not only was it lacking a hard drive... but "no hard drive cable"...
my mind briefly tried to figure that one out
... even considered searching yheir several other lots to see if they typically included the "hard drive cable" or if they were often denying customers of this clearly standard component.
2- see pic
it was so soon after the 1st find that i briefly considered that i was missing something... aside from faith in humanity, nope.
that said, i do respect their blunt, bold\capslock committee to transparent honesty.7 -
Just got my laptop back from the store, after having sent it in over 6 weeks ago due to a faulty keyboard. I had made a system image of the hard drive before I sent it in, so I could just restore it and have it ready to go. So I get the backup restoring, and at around 75%, the laptop died. I forgot to plug it in.
I am now currently downloading windows. This is going to be a long night.3 -
I'm in a small company so they don't have a big budget.
The previous I.T guy went full retard and decided that it would be a great idea to buy a shitty 200$ laptop with a soldered eMMc hard drive for accounting.
Since they NEVER use the cloud and just pass around excel files, the files aren't really saved anywhere but on the USBs and the computer.
Guess what ? The motherboard fucking fried and almost 6 MONTHS of accounting work was lost. Out of warranty of course, not that it would help since the eMMc chip is also fucked.
That's what you get for trying to cheap out on hardware and not choosing the right stuff.4 -
Whoever the fuck in windows decided it is a good idea to start doing a 24h+ repair on an external hard drive which doesnt even have the OS, on boot, should burn in hell.
God. I cant handle windows and its stupidity even for the 1 hr i use it to play games.19 -

Wanted to move Visual Studio to a different hard drive
So I uninstalled it and went to install it anew, only to find out the installation location was set to read only.
I then found out I had to run the installer with the arguments /uninstall and /force to force a complete uninstall, thus allowing me to change the installation directory... What the fuck Microsoft?1 -
So it's not just through reading your own code later that you can realize how stupid you are. All the great card house of the belief in your own superiority collapsing instantly.
Currently intense time with my son. Can be hard being around one another 24h non-stop... And then realizing that a lot of the stubbornness and quirks of his that drive me crazy: is actually me! (Be it that it's in my character as well or he was reacting to a stupidness of mine)2 -
So re-installed linux on my PC while I had the time only to discover that my windows installation had installed it's boot manager onto the linux installs hard drive... Today is just fucking great isn't it .-.9 -

I've been watching that "Mr Robot" lately, and its warped my sensibilities. Now, whenever I see something ridiculous, like "I've got the hard drive here" (holds up PSU), I'm irrationally angry and won't watch the rest of the show. Friend (Computer Science student) - Dual boot my Windows 10 with Ubuntu
Me - I will, but chances are something bad may happen. Mostly it does not. I advise you to backup everything first.
Friend - But I don't even have an external hard drive.
Me - So what do you want me to do?
Friend - Forget it. I'll figure how to do my work in Windows
Me - But how else are you going to learn?
Friend - Ain't nobody got time for that!2 -
I remember when I was in elementary school, there was a teacher, who taught me and 3 other kids, how a PC works and how to use it. He booted it up and told us that it would take quite some time before interaction was possible (a few minutes?). He described it as a person that just got up. It would first stretch, get some breakfast, so on and so forth.... those memories😌😁😅
Today I know that the hard drive and the CPU (and the other internals) were just fucking slow...😂1 -
This project is gonna drive me insane. I'm moving a custom-scripted WordPress ecommerce site to WooCommerce. The basis of the source site was WooCommerce but with the advantages stripped away and with a LOT of hard coded stuff added to it to make it seem like a unique, custom ecommerce engine.
Now I have to strip all that away and standardize it back into the WooCommerce way so it's all easier to maintain.
It's like I've been handed a jigsaw puzzle of a bunch of clowns and now I need to take it apart and put it together again but make it look like George Washington instead.1 -

Planned release today, one of my co-worker's laptop's hard drive died in the morning.
And you guys say Satan is not real :/1 -
After struggling all morning with my laptop, I finally accepted the fact that my 1TB hard drive died. Now I'm on a dilemma: Should I replace the drive and upgrade the RAM, or should I buy a new laptop altogether?
Current laptop is Lenovo G50-45, with AMD APU, 6GB (4+2 on graphics) and said 1TB drive.
Before this misfortune befell me, I was planning to upgrade the RAM to 8+2.
Now I'm at a loss, but my folks are willing to help.
Should I buy a new drive and RAM or should I start looking a new more dev oriented laptop? If the latter, any recommendations?3 -
Years ago was the first time I put custom firmware on our wndr3700 router, it hasn't crashed since.
I bought a wndr4700, faster, 5ghz, possibility for a hard drive.
It's been 3 years and still no custom firmware. -

FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT USB STICK. What the actual fuck how hard can it be to format a usb-stick? Excuse me?
Basically, flashed arch .iso on my usb stick. After stuff was done I want to format my usb stick again so I can put files on it. Normally thats a super easy process. I tried a shitload of things.
1) On windows: Quick format -> Windows was unable to format.
2) Went to Linux. Opened GParted. Gparted didn't detect the usb drive? Wtf. Rebooted then it showed up. Tried to delete all partitions, tried to clear the entire drive. Gparted just freezes. Ok... wtf is going on?
3) Tried to go the bruteforce way and zero out the entire drive with dd. After a few seconds dd freezes and is not doing anything anymore.
Wth is going on lol? Why can I not wipe my usb drive? Any ideas?10 -
First "computer" : Electronika BK. Had some fun with table software and some basic

(Youknow like io.sys, autoexec.bat)
Reboots :

Needed some help to fix it.

Thank you for your suggestions in your comments!9 -
Ugh. Those bad sector hard drives are pissing me off! I can't even install Windows 7 properly because some fucking bad sectors are on drive! COULD YOU FUCKING OMIT THEM, SO I CAN FINALLY INSTALL THE FUCKING WINDOWS ON MY MOM'S COWORKER'S COMPUTER AND FUCKING GO HOME!? I'm so pissed off! Now I have to fucking change the OS in hope that it will do the trick. AND GUESS WHAT!? It fucking won't work and the OS will crash more often! AAAARGH YOU SON OF A FEMALE DOG JUST OMIT THE FUCKING SECTORS! (╯°□°)╯︵┻━┻4

I am already tired before even looking at this code.
Looking at your code makes me cry.
I can insult myself whole day but it won’t be enough to survive looking at your coding style.
If cpu could talk it would ask for heater removal because your code depresses it so much.
Looking at your code makes my monitor burn out.
Downloading your code makes my hard drive stop.
And my favorite:
You’re already good developer so now stop writing and appoint as manager / tester. -
I formatted my entire hard drive, installed an unlicensed windows 8.1 and ran a shit ton of cracked patching on it; even went hunting for a fuckload of drivers, just so I don't have to use Windows 10.
"But it's not so bad" you say. Well, merry Christmas to you and your six hours of unskippable, non-disablebale updates per week, strategically placed to cause maximum disruption to your work, my friends.11 -
I don't know exactly what year my dad bought the PC with a hard drive of 4GB, but it was not in the year 2000 and following. I'm not sure if it was running win98 or win95. Probably win95. Aaah those were golden times.
I remember having no internet, but still having fun drawing images on ms paint.
Oh and there was a game named sesame street for that os. Sometimes I miss those times.3 -
fuck!
When your hard drive crashes, and the most annoying thing you forgot to save is the color/syntax theme on your favourite editor.
(I'm canadian... favourite, not favorite, shutup red squiggly)
fuck!
45 minutes scrolling between color schemes in sublme.. none of them seem right.
Maybe it's monokai? I think...
or was it oceanic
FUCk!
oh well at least it looks like I'm working.1 -
Can't git push
because of an "access denied" error message
because I didn't set up my key file properly (with right paths, right format and so on)
because I'm working from my home laptop device
because I'm in home office
because Corona
..but..
I can connect to my work computer where git is set up properly but also I
can't git push
because I can't "cd" into the project path
because the samba mount point is messed up
because I don't reboot my machine to fix it
because I can't enter my password
because it does have a full hard drive encryption and the password screen shows up before the network services are started.2 -
First time setting up a linux distro for myself I decided to do it on an external hard drive. Accidentally formatted the whole thing. Lost 200gb of anime.
I restored about 60% soon aftet meeting up with a friend of mine. But it was still devastating.7 -
I was returning something at MicroCenter the other day. The guy in front of me was picking up a laptop be brought in to have fixed. They had replaced the motherboard, and put all his old data on an external drive.
"So what's this?"
"This is an external hard drive. We copied all the data from your laptop onto it and put a fresh install on it."
"So .. how do I get to it?"
"You just plug it in, over USB."
"So how ... how does that work."
This goes on for a while. Shop owner has to start his computer. Plug in the drive. There was a lot of, "So everything that was on here, is now on here?"
The guy had no basic understanding of external hard drives, USB, copying files ... thankfully while the files were copying from the hard drive to his desktop, he said he needed a longer cable to the router so he could put it on the other side of the room. It took the guy behind the desk an unreasonable amount of time to direct him to the isle with the Ethernet cables, but once he did, I was finally able to return my item.
I'm glad I no longer work in desktop support.1 -
I finally got a new hard drive, but I under estimated how long it would take to reinstall all my programs and environments for development...3

Okay soooo.... I have this laptop that I use a little less often but is bugging me about. So WINDOWS just decides to RAMP UP THE HARD DRIVE TO ALL HELL WHENEVER I NEED TO USE IT.
I have a few options:
- Replace the 1TB 5400RPM with a 120GB SSD and do Linux
- Replace the 1TB with the 120GB and do a fresh install of Windows
- Replace Windows with Linux, keeping the 1TB
- or reinstall Windows
Which do you suggest and why?4 -

My laptop just went through a BSOD and I've been noticing a noise from the hard disk even before the BSOD. Dump says the process that failed is ntoskernel. That's no help.
SMART test said hard disk state as OK but crystaldiskinfo says the following which confused me even more. Is it supposed to be this way?7 -
Back when I was my first year of computer science me and a fellow classmate went to the IT store to buy a hard drive. We walked past an iMac and my friend (who was top of our class at the time) looked at it and said: "That is a nice screen! But where is the computer". Laughed my ass off, and we are supposed to be cs undergrads...1

Great. Hard drive dying on our server. Thankfully since I rebuilt the RAID, now I can handle a short then failure on a raid 10... Ugh. Stupid cheap drives.

Best: take a job as a data analyst. 1 year later, re-write and re-deploy the entire backend following correct security concentions and well-hashed-out data models.
Worst: attempt to backup a hard drive using dd, just to accidentally brick the laptop (because it had some security layer the school put to prevent just that)
Bestest: use knowledge acquired at my "best" story to nuke windows on bricked laptop. Then extract the leftover data using dd and a series of recovery tools. -
NOOOOO
I was in the middle of transferring a file to an external hard drive when it suddenly stopped.
I disconnected the hard drive and reconnected it, nothing.

My office computer ran out of hard drive space so I asked for an upgrade.
Instead they gave me a brand new computer with awesome specs and a mid-top tier graphics card, so now all I want to do is play games.

I feel retarded...
After getting a new hard drive late at night bcoz my old one went kaboom, I put it in the case, wired it up but it wouldn't work, I tried connecting it to different SATA ports with different cables etc.. This went for 20 minutes and then I realized that the drive wouldn't even start spinning, then I discovered I hadn't connected it to the PSU. Fuck my life and fuck my retardeness. -
Coolest project I'll continually be working on.

Selling my Dad's famous BBQ sauces and rubs has been my hobby and passion for years. I'm lucky that my Dad was a computer enthusiast in the 1980's and also had a knack for marketing himself. All the while also being a somewhat famous character in the pioneering sport of competition BBQ cooking.
My brother and I shared the following machines growing up:
Commodore 64 w/ 2 Disk Drives, VicModem, & Tape Drive
Tandy 1000 Original Radio Shack IBM PC Clone
IBM 5150 w/ 20mb Hard Drive Expansion (Still Have This In Near Mint Condition)
Tandy 1000 RSX 386 with Win 3.11 For Networks
A Homebuilt Pentium 90 MHz Tower with Soundblaster and 16bit onboard video.
All that time on those machines learning various flavors of BASIC and crude graphic design got me where I am today.
That and learning how to BBQ... ;)8 -
The name of today is Murphy.
So, the LAN at location A can't reach the one at location B. Turns out that something yet unknown is blowing fuses at location A, but after disconnecting a ton of unknowns, the router and a radio link station are up again. Yay Internet, but still no VPN connection to location B.
Needing the passwords for the OpenVPN servers, I notice that encfs4win refuses to mount the drive where the password manager files reside. Of course, any problem must have the company of other problems. Eventually, the encfs drive mounts on another computer.
So, I can access the OpenVPN computer running the client side and check the logs, which tell me that network B is unreachable.
Both networks and an encfs setup all die at the same time? Right, Murphy, what are you going to come up with next? No, don't tell me because I just got read errors from a hard drive. -

My hard drive made a short sort of grinding noise today and the machine didn't post but didn't turn off. Turned it off and on again. Everything is fine. Trying to develop and everything is just throwing the most random bs errors I'd ever seen.
Turns out somehow many, many, many directories became corrupted. Couldn't even run a check disk and half of windows broke.
Just thought I'd share that since I've never seen anything like it. -

We had an ADAM/Colecovision unit before this, but I don't really count it, as it was more of a console for us than a computer.
In 1986 dad brought home a Tandy 1000 SX. It had an Intel 8088 processor, 64k of memory, and no hard drive. With dual 5.25" floppy drives, our write-protected DOS 3.1 disk stayed in drive A almost all the time. Games and other software were run from drive B, or from the external cassette drive. For really big games, like Conquest of Camelot and Space Quest 3, we were frequently prompted to swap disks in B: before the game could continue.
Space Quest, King's Quest, Lords of Conquest, Conquest of Camelot, Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer, several editions of Carmen Sandiego, and at least a dozen other games dominated our gaming use. We wrote papers with WordStar, and my parents maintained their budget with Lotus 1-2-3.
A year or two later, Dad installed a 10 MB hard drive, and we started booting DOS off that instead. Heady days.1 -
Fooling Windows is easy and fun :p
My friend got logged out of windows and recovery option was saying to wipe the syatem. There was important data in the windows ( photos, videos , project ) so I thought of a simple solution.
Booted Linux in USB and live booted it on the system. Linux can read the files from window OS. Simply copied the data to hard drive.
Windows be like Am I a joke to you9 -

One of my team has been handed a turd of a laptop which because of corporate policies, has to be fixed rather than replaced. Started of with a noisy fan 2 months ago, led to a warning on the hd. Hd got replaced, but machine was then blue screening. Motherboard was replaced then they discovered it was software and then there was no sound. Today, another engineer appeared to fix the sound and found previous engineer hadn't connected the cable. Whilst doing that, they killed the hard drive....5

We can't run linux on our work machines but I need to build a couple of linux scripts. One drive said it backed up my dev VM...so where is the hard drive file. Its been syncing to my new laptop for a day.2

I fucking killed my hard drive by installing the guest additions in a Windows VM! Everything freezed and crashed suddenly, how the hell is that possible? How can Windows fuck everything up, even in a VM??
(Probably wasn't Windows fault, that makes me even more angry).
This hard drive wasn't even two months, his predecessor died heroically in a tragic magnet incident :(3 -
A jr dev was having an issue registering code with our data pipeline (prefect self hosted).
Turns out he's running vscode to launch a anaconda shell (didn't even know that was a thing) to launch jupyter notebook and running commands in the notebook (didn't know that was possible) all from Windows.
No it doesn't work. His environment configuration isn't right. I told him to just run Linux and get rid of all that nonsense.
Nothing is on git yet and were three weeks in! His code is full of hard coded absolute paths of files on his hard drive... He even had an example app to go buy, with a project layout to copy.
There's no helping some people9 -
SHIT my hard drive
Oh wait just didn't close my coke bottle properly ...
I totally freaked out for 5 minutes until I figured it out...😒3 -
Crated a small program that would make life with an external hard drive easier.
Part of it includes copying music. Since I didn't have the EHD on me I decided to test this part on my music folder.
After going though circles because of a directory not found folder, I decided that the problem was that I workout one 0 in the spelling of my user directory. Finally, I thought that it was fixed, I was all excited and then "access to directory denied (I'm paraphrasing)", this is my music folder we are discussing here... 😓😒 -
I still feel crossed because my linux workstation just died without any usable error message, the only thing that saved the day is my second unplugged hard drive with windows installed in it, it was working fine last night, i always shut it down properly and i only ever used it for dev. i'm still baffled and a bit furious about it, its ubuntu for god's sake, I switched to linux months ago and loved it, but now i feel as if i was betrayed.5

So, today I was very happy with my new chromecast. I can hold a button on remote and tell him what to search on youtube. But it's impossible to let it search forward tsoding. It just doesn't understand. So, very confident I spelled tsoding and expected it to understand correctly. No! From all freaking miles we made to AI, it can't fucking understand spelling? How hard could that be. So now, I still often have to use my phone. Big downer.
Also: you never know if it will answer a question you made or if it'll search for videos. Seems very random.
I should be able to add things to Callender by just speaking to it but it says that it doesn't have permissions and can't find them nowhere.
Besides that, this new one is usable as network drive of 4Gb. Good source file backup network drive. I already try to contribute to the webdav server on it. The implementation is a bit sad and I already wrote a whole full featured webdav server myself. Also offered Dutch translation.3 -
Nothing like a fucking kernel corruption after Ubuntu update and restart.
It's so great
Really
My two hard drives now are encrypted and to unlock them the kernel should be intact.
The amount of time it'll take to reconfigure my machine to work is insane.
Also, I had commits in products I'm working that weren't on remote. So fuck me.
Now I have to do a fresh install and hope that I can read my second drive.17 -
Only Windows would give me crap with Dual Boot... fresh install on a separate drive for my ancient Macbook pro and Win10 needs to Repair Disk every time it starts up... might have to buy an actual windows computer again just to use the software to read computer codes on Vw's before selling my car.5

So i got another reason to hate windows.
During decrypting bitlocked external hard drive it got disconnected and guess what the partitions didn't showed up in windows and everytime i connected hard drive windows get stuck. I thought the drive and all data of about 300gb is gone. None of the softwares worked (Also tried diskpart to list disks but it got stuck too). After about a week i live booted linux distro and guess what hard drive is working perfectly in linux.
And decryption was also successful without interruption.
Linux never disappoints.2 -

Tandy 1000SX. 1986. I got home from school, and Dad had set it up. He got us a subscription to 321 Contact magazine, so we could learn some programming on it.
I remember playing the space quest games, King's Quest 4, Lords of Conquest, Conquest of Camelot, Carmen Sandiego, and a lot of others. Eventually we got a 10 MB hard drive for it, but for years, we booted its dual 5.25" floppy setup with a DOS 3.2 floppy. -
Back in 2005, I had quite a few bits of music I was working on (just as a hobby). A lot of these had not been finished, but I'd sent excerpts in medium-quality MP3 format to a friend. I had an external backup drive - a regular hard drive in an USB enclosure. After a while, this drive started making unpleasant whining sounds so I sent it off for replacement.
During that time I made the foolish decision to try and plug a floppy drive in while the PC was powered on. Something touched the bottom of the hard drive and the power went off. I powered it back on again and heard a fizzing sound, there were some flashes from the hard drive and a burning smell. Yep, the disk was dead - and my backup drive was gone.
I'm still not entirely sure what happened, my best guess is that I had an exposed piece of wire from one of my hacky case mods (I had a thing for blue LEDs) which touched the circuitry of the hard drive. Almost every project, piece of software I'd created, every photo I'd taken, and most unfinished music I'd made up until that point - gone. I was pretty devastated about it. I only had a handful of things survived which I'd burned onto CD previously.
I managed to get some excerpts back from my friend, and re-created my favourite pieces of music based on those. I've moved on to other projects and write much better code now, so mostly I am no longer bothered. I do wish I could re-listen to some of the music I had made back then though.
Needless to say, I no longer fiddle around with the innards of my computers while they are on, store everything on mirrored drives and also ensure I always have a backup somewhere (and am working on remote backups and having several days of backups...)
I never want that to happen again -
How hard can it be to reference a file on a mounted windows network drive with UNC path to the java command? Seems like everyone uses the same env variable but always different syntax. Sometimes it's
-Dsmth=file://\\net.work.path\sub.xml, then it's -Dsmth=file:///\\net.work.path\\sub.xml, then
-Dsmth="file:///\\\\net...xml"
and none of them work?! 😤4 -

Ok, so I saw someone post in Dev rant that the incognito browsing history was stored in the system32 folder so I thought that's quite amusing, I'll tell my cousin to see if he falls for it. Next thing I know he actually deleted it! He then asked me how to fix that. Me being the twat I am told him that the fix was quite simple. All you need to polarise the hard drive to get those sectors to start working again ( literally talking out my a** here to make it sound a little more legit). To do this take the hard drive out and rub a magnet up towards the pins where the cable was connected. He now has a broken hard drive and I have to convince him that it was because he rubbed it the wrong way as I really CBA to have to buy him a new one and get his little laptop up and running again. I really didn't expect him to actually do it or listen to me. To top it all off he wants to study computer science at uni (he's just started collage).2

Adding more random half-started projects to my hard drive.
I would put them on github but then I'd have WAY too many reps that don't function and I'd feel like I'm wasting storage on github.

Why does it have to be so incredibly hard to get an nvidia card to work under Linux? Can someone tell me why the fuck is it so hard to choose where to install electron apps? Selecting installation directory is a default feature in pretty much anything installable. Is electron somehow above that? Is clicking the two a extra buttons to choose a second drive too mainstream nowdays? What? Why? I use Atom, VS code, postman, cycligent, boostnote among others . The idea is good, the apps look beautiful and responsive. But bloated as fuck. Atom alone takes 1.4Gb! And I am ok with it! Really I am! But why the fuck not let me install it in a drive where I have 70% of space free and instead make me use my crammed SSD? Why? WHY?1

So one of my co-workers had issues with his MKP 2010, it wasn't booting up, wasn't charging, basically acting as a brick. He went everywhere around the office asking other to revive it. I was the last person - my duty was to take out the hard drive and trash it.
I asked him if I can keep it, he allowed me to do so.
After a couple of days I got back to it, installed a hard drive, which I had from my friend from a while ago.
- Played around with charger, got it charging
- Boot it up to recovery mode (I was very excited when I saw that globe spinning)
- The Wi-Fi didn't connect, used LAN
- Formatted drive, installed OS
- Got to endless loop of recovery mode
- Found out that the digits on the keyboard type lower line of letters.. :/
- Boot to safe mode - worked
- Endlessly booted to recovery mode as I tried to get to boot menu
- Realized that the left Shift, Control, and Option does not work
- Used external keyboard and got to boot menu
- Still no success with booting to regular mode
- NVRAM reset!!!!
- Booya! It works!
Should I bother and replace the keyboard? I mean it doesn't matter that much, probably will give it to my mother :)1 -

I had a 1Tb external hard drive on the corner of desk (My fault, i know, but at that time i didn't have a lot of space), i used it to keep mostly unimportant things like game files, VMs, movies and stuff like that. Once i was streaming a movie from the pc to the tv in the other room, suddently the tv disconnected, i went to the pc room to check, and i found out that the evil monster that lived in my house (the cat) dropped it off the desk.
The hard disk died and brought all its files with it, luckly i had backups for most of the important files, but i had to download again around 300GB of stuff.... with my slow internet. -
Haha fuckers fucking hell! Last post was about Factorio not starting. Guess what. My hard drive failed. Fuck. Razer wanted to wipe the computer to fix the rattling noise inside. I told them fuck off you should be able to fix it anyways. Guess they might as well wipe it all clean now...1

High school, prepping to go to class, I take a book that I needed for class, while picking it up from the book shelf the latin vocabulary fell and landed on my hard drive which was on top of my MacBook, two birds with one stone :(
I now have three different external hard drives and planning to get an off-site solution as well. -
Have you guys had any trouble trying to get the BAs to use JIRA for issue reporting/management? The dev team just upgraded to new JIRA and we are getting hard pushback... they're wanting to stick with 1-4 excel spreadsheets on a share drive...3

That day when I destroyed the hard drive of my mother's PC when I was 12 years old. (The drive wasn't properly screwed in the case, and so after a few repositions of the case, it would one day start up sounding like a jet engine and after that scary sound: silence.
My mother took it relatively well, mostly because she saw how I was beating myself up over it. I was so mad at myself as I knew better! I knew how to create a backup strategy, I'm theory. I never really put in into practice though.
She had no backups of course. No way of regaining her data.
Now she does. And now she regularly calls me to initialize a backup of her current data on her external drive. (And every few months I sync her data over to my place on a data storage just in case she loses both her PC and external drive in a fire.) -
Working code?
Or fake compiler?
Fix a problem?
Or buy a new computer?
Bring a flash drive?
Or bring a hard drive?
Use water cooling?
Or use an ice cube on top a processor and memory?
Drink some coffee?
Or eat a healthy breakfast?
Do you make hardware?
Or software?
These are the problems programmers face from old people as employers or relatives trying to find something to relate to. -
Western Digital takes forever to RMA their hard drive under warranty. Had to buy a spare just to get my NAS back up and running before I lose everything (I only have a 1 drive fault tolerance RAID array). Too bad I only have 5 drive slots. 4 4TB WD Reds and an SSD for caching = 10TB usable space in this configuration. Actually this kinda pisses me off....I pay for 4TB drives and I get 3.64TB. For the 4 drives, that's a loss of 1.44TB.1

I just finish my talk on Google Drive and Backup & Sync to our company's higher ups. I already knew it would be hard to make them (most, not all) grasp the things I'll be blabbering but being actually there in front of them looking at their blank, innocent stares made me feel how stupid they are YET they drive a nice car and take home a lot on paydays.
Yes, all these sync thing is new to them.2 -
Lots of thumb drives. My laptop used to not have much storage and most of my files would be on those thumb drives.
My first one was 8GB, then 16, then 32, 64, 128, now 256.
Each time I got a new one I would copy the old files to it, kinda like these crabs https://youtube.com/watch/...
All of them are in a little box on my desk right now, I use the old ones for backups. I replaced the laptop's hard drive a few months ago so now I'm less dependent on thumb drives :)2 -
Playing Sierra Online games like Kings Quest and Thexdar on an Epson 8088 with duel 5 1/4 floppy drives and no hard drive. I don't miss the days of having to swap disks when moving between different areas in the games.
I remember when my dad got a 486 DX/2 with a 300 MB hard drive and I could fit all my games on it. Prior to that on the 286 that had a 40 MB drive I created a batch file with a menu to select a game that would unzip the game and launch it, then when I exited the game it would zip it back up and delete the directory. -
Despite what seem to be supported a lot on the internet, yes you can kill a hard drive with a magnet. As simple as dropping it on your running laptop! Try it at home!

I was copying a couple of folders onto my external hard drive when my laptop crashed.
Now the whole drive needs formatting...
I have years and years of photos and files on it. I have some stuff backed up but I don't want to lose over a tb of data if there's any way to recover it, I can't refilm my baby brother's first steps.
Google's answers so far have been unhelpful or risky, can anyone give me any advice?(please don't say make more backups)18 -
Ardour keeps telling me my hard drive isn't fast enough for playback. I'm using a Thinkpad t420 with an SSD, so the only reason I can think that my hard drive wouldn't be fast enough is if swap is slowing it down. I wanted to record music over winter break but I couldn't because of that issue. Music in Linux is frustrating. I will say that antergos made the process of installing jack, guitarix, rakarrack, and ardour a breeze though, so that's something.4

Everything works great on Ubuntu!
Hell yeah let's install it everywhere.
3rd hard drive dead in 6 months.
But I blame the brand, TeamGroup, or the batch was bad ( all 3 of them were bought at the same day from the same shop)15 -
Anyone knows how to start a hard drive without power supply?
I'm hacking a few old disks and don't want to use a full power supply7 -
few years ago... Setting up Ellucian's mobile product only to find out they left out where to put the config file (it's not in the typical App_Data directory or root of WAR file) it's in a hard coded spot on the C drive (C:\ellucianmobile\...groovy)
Below is the change request their support team put in to update the documentation...
Their documentation seems to be a bit spotty at times, almost as if they want you to have to pay their support / consultants to setup the products you bought from them -
When you restore a decade of photographs from your relatives' hard drive and they have no idea that you feel like a hacker from the movies. But as you browse the photos, you cri because damn! It's been years! I miss my childhood!

I am not a techie or don't know much about the system. But once I tried dual booting my system. I searched how to and did what it was recommended, i.e, made a partition using Windows and then tried to install. But during installation it never showed me the partition I created. I asked my friend and he somehow installed Ubuntu in my laptop . Later I found out that it just erased my D drive in Windows and left 200 GB on my hard drive unallocated. I guess I have the weirdest laptop .

So I know that I'll inevitably need to use macOS for some project or another in college but don't want to pay for a Mac (I already have a Windows machine and will be installing some currently undecided upon Linux distro onto an external hard drive). Would it be worth it to try to make a macOS Hackintosh external hard drive just for the couple projects I'll need it for?5

A weird thing happened when I tried to install linux mint on my PC.
Although I installed it on a hard drive (I have another hard drive for windows), my bios tells me that Linux would be on the same hard drive as Windows?? I can assure that it's not the case, as I plugged out the linux drive and grub couldn't boot Linux anymore, just windows. Plug back in, linux bootable. Ok fine?
When I installed linux I panicked for a moment, as I thought I had it correctly installed separately, instead it would have become a dual boot, according to the bios?6 -
So I've got this old external hard drive that's on the verge of retirement. I bought a new one to move the content of the old one to, but it's a lot of data. (1+ TB)
Does anyone know of a good program that can do that reliably?27 -
Fucking windows not releasing my hard drive. I was in a kind of a hurry, but you just have to be a pain in the arse. Now I even have to wait for you to fix an indexing error for something I did not agree to?
FUCKING BULLSHIT, MY DUDE NEXT TO ME USING LINUX WAS USING IT JUST FINE!
I want enough time to replace this garbage.
By the time I got here, it finished scanning for errors. NO. FUCKING. ERRORS. FOUND. FUCKING. WASTE. OF. TIME. -
I installed Ubuntu... I messed up and I deleted the EFI entry of a NTFS hard drive in which I have all my important data... The NTFS deasapeared... Do you have any tool to recommend to recover my data... 😫😫3

Is it hard to write a kernel module to expose information to usee space ? I need smartctls abilitytl to specify sata being transported over. USB cable to a sata drive to pull Information like make model serial but it requires root and lsblk doesn't have the functionality to grab info on the device on the other end of the usb to sata cable
There is another way though right ?4 -
Anyone have a spare 2TB external hard drive they want to lend to me? I’m trying to re-partition an 8TB drive but it’s being finicky so I have to take all the data off and wipe it. Luckily I only have 2TB on it. I’m going to ask my IT director if he has one today. Wish me luck 🙃2

Part number idk of TheCapeGreek's Ship of Theseus:
PC dying again. Either now all 4 of my (admittedly old) RAM sticks are dead within 3 weeks of each other or the motherboard is conking out. Either way I need to finance a new rig on Black Friday. At least I have a working hard drive and 2 monitors.3 -

Does anyone know of a simple facial recognition program that I could train locally on a set of people’s faces?
I’m tasked with culling through a few hundred photos to find ones of certain people. I need the originals taken off the network drive and copied to a hard-disk.1 -
When your laptop runs out of ram due to your environments and it begins writing to swap. Your hard drive fails resulting the computer to crash and restart -_-.

Wanted backing up my windows files so I can install Linux but my 500gb hard drive is acting up, just closed a pop up telling me installed successfully and it never showed up even on my disk management.. I hope it's not dead, pls is there anyone who has experienced this before? 😰2

External hard drive reliability question.
Im looking for a 2-4 TB external harddrive, depending on the price (best bang per buck).
I found a Seagate Backup Plus Portable, 4TB. It seemed reasonable, until i googled failure rates of seagate drives.
Do you guys have any recommendations for me? Anything is appreciated :)15 -
Please slap me in the face... A week ago I remove my Linux partition on my main rig because I don't have a use for Linux on that system. But I forgot to deal with the bootloader.... Then a week after when I rebooted for whatever reason, I got a grub rescue (obviously). And I realized I had no hard drive with a rescue tool to boot on (I don't use optic drives). Took me 2 hours to find my sata2usb cable to recover an iso and put it on my utility hard drive... Then, when trying to set a proper bootloader, it listed all my disks, except the main SSD I wanted. Turns out, another hour later, I found that the power supply for that drive was a bit unplugged because I had to remove one of the drive to access it. All is running well now, but I wasted way too much time on that 😤

Ok that's ALSO two more brand new phones totalling over 1000 in value they owe John boy here
And many months of lodging and other fun things and some hard drive cases and several hard drives full of earlier photos and videos of him
And let's just add on some extra money for making people act crazy.
Not trying to be patterned into you peoples shit by reinforcing my own self destructive behavior like some kind of goddamn drug addict
Obviously the end result sucks
Look at all these miserable fucks ! -
already these little fucks gave the idea they think they're going to lay claim to property that is NOT there's.
they can have this laptop if they like, with a ssd drive in it. just not this ssd drive or any of john's other hard drives, as HE PURCHASED THEM ALL.
also stop humanizing laptops, fucking freaks !
its a plastic shell with silicon chips in it that conducts electricity through a cpu that does stuff.
wasn't put on this earth to give chomos shallow lives to mimic with some added idiocy embedded into their lines.
and hand over all the old photos from the real times periods and those that came after and stop trying to touch what doesn't belong to them.
this includes the hdd's cotents 'lost' in chicago, which appear to have mostly reappeared. -

Chrome is cool but have you ever assembled a 96 megapixel png with magick?
That shit uses 3GB ram why
At least now that I reserved a third of my memory to the linux VM my hard drive isn't abused for its page file anymore2
