In Switzerland/Germany we have an abbreviation TEAM: "Toll Ein Anderer Macht's" which means "Hurray another one/stupid is doing all the work". I think that nails it.46
My respect for Dell just went up.
During the christmas holidays, we have quite a few employees taking time off to spend it with their friends and families instead of sitting in front of a computer, staring at emails.
We hope that you, once you start employing people in your own future business, understand that happy employees are good and productive employees, and understand the value of a healthy work life balance.
That said, we will not be able to respond in a timely manner, so please expect a delay.
We wish you a happy holiday, and hope you enjoy the season break.
Eligible EMEA countries are : United Kingdom; Switzerland; Spain; Netherlands; Italy; Ireland; Germany; France; Belgium; Norway; Sweden; Denmark.

Buddy from dept I was in 4 years ago: Check your email.
10 mins later
Buddy: Can you join a webex now?
Buddy: OK, I'll forward the details, join when you can.
Me: Could you give me a little context?
Buddy: You helped them pull a cert off a USB stick in Switzerland last year (I'm in US).
Me: Don't think I did.
When I get a chance to read email chain, half of it is in German (I don't read it). Have not idea what this is about, but there seems to be a newer one that says it was resolved.
Me to Buddy: Looks like it was resolved.
Buddy: Yes, but they're still mad at you.
Buddy: Because you wrote that app and it's hard to update the certs.
Me: I wrote that app as a favor, the dev they hired spent 6 months rewriting 3 SQL queries before being fired.
Buddy: LOL, well I guess they don't like the cert part.
Me: OK, but when I turned it over to them it didn't have a cert at all, I have no idea what the feature is.
Buddy: They said you help them last year.
Me: I didn't.
Buddy: Well they still think it's all your fault.4
when it's 36*C / 97*F in the city and you pack your laptop into your backpack and flee on to the swiss alps. To work on a new website at a beautiful landscape, on green meadows, cows and agreeable 18*C / 64*F.
And getting payed for this... This is life!12
FYI, you get paid an average of 100k/year working for a business as a dev in switzerland. In india, you'll be looking at an average salary of 5-7k.
Which is less than what you earn in a month in switzerland.
We are so spoiled.17
How I've got my previous job?
Imagine you are in a wild techno club. Dark aisles, A dj from berlin behind the turntables blasting out hard beats, couples kissing on extasy pills.
And there was a friend I've didn't meet in ages. "how do you do?" she asks. "ah... you know i'm on a job hunt for a year i feel misrable". "really? my dad is looking for somebody, send him your resNZNZNZ!" "WHAT? can't hear you!" "Send him your resume!" "Ahhh! okay great!"
So on 24. december 5pm, snow outside, i've sat on wooden table in the kitchen of her father discussing the conditions for the job. It was the start of a crazy time. Dining with millionaires on their Castles. Shaking hands with top businesses leaders. Going to China and having dinner with the 500 richest chinese at once. Wild!
so my advice for you nerds, don't stay in your comfort zone behind the screen on weekends. Vistit a techno club sometimes. You may find a pretty girl/boy with a CEO as a father.16
I'd say Linux but seen that around a lot so I'll go with another favourite:
It's basically an offline navigation app which works with downloading maps offline and then you can use navigation without Internet (gps though of course).
It's very easy to use, looks okay enough and no fucking tracking at all. I was in Switzerland recently without any service (my friends didn't have service either and their navigation relies on Internet) and this fucker saves us big time.
Not saying that there aren't any other offline navigation apps but this one is awesome imo.31
On June 2016, I've quite my job. 15 years as developer/system administrator in a middle company in switzerland. 30 people with everyday problem. 30 calls per day.
Now, i work in my own company.
More work, no more time, but u know what? No regrets!! I'm freeeeeeee! :p3
Some years back I was working in a project that essentially dealt with all things related to foreigners and foreign affairs in Switzerland. You could manage entry visas, work permits, citizenship, international warrants, Interpol requests, etc.
One of the test managers (from client side - i.e. the government) was once manually "testing" and mixed up the production and test instance, to both of which he was logged in at the time.
The test case then ended up setting up an entry ban against himself, as he used his own name for testing...
Next time he returned from vacation the border control at the airport were like "Uhm, Sir, we can't let you into the country. Please come with us." :D :D
(He managed to clear that up in end, I dare say, though, that he learned his lesson.)13
Goddamit Apple fanboys... I saw 5 tents infront of the Apple Store in Zürich switzerland today, I MEAN WTF ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE? SPENDING AT LEAST 1000 CHF (around the Same in USD) FOR A FUCKING PHONE WHICH IS FROM APPLE!? WTF?! WHY? WHAT IS THE FUCKING POINT OF ALL THIS NONSENSE?! EXPLAIN THIS BULLFUCK TO ME!!15
EXCEL YOU FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT! don't get me wrong, it's usefull and kt works, usually... Buckle up, your i for a ride. SO HERE WE FUCKING GO: TRANSLATED FORMULA NAMES? SUCKS BUT MANAGABLE. WHATS REALLY FUCKED UP IS HTHE GERMAN VERSION!
DID YOU HEAR ABOUT .csv? It stands for MOTHERFUCKING COMMA SEPERATED VALUES! GUESS WHAT SOME GENIUS AT MICROSOFT FIGURED? Hey guys let's use a FUCKING SEMICOLON INSTEAD OF A COMMA IN THE GERMAN VERSION! LET'S JUST FUCK EVERY ONE EXPORTING ANY DATA FROM ANY WEBSITE!
The workaround is to go to your computer settings, YOU CAN'T FUCKING ADJUST THIS IN EXCEL!, change the language of the OS to English, open the file and change it back to German. I mean, come on guys, what is this shit?
AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON ENCODING! äöü and that stuff usually works, but in Switzerland we also use French stuff, that then usually breaks the encoding for Excel if the OS language is set to German (both on Windows and Mac, at least they are consistent...)
To whoever approved, implemented or tested it: FUCK YOU, YOU STUPID SHITFUCK, with love: me8
A new online store for custom PC has opened in Switzerland.
For overclocking they want CHF 10 (around 9.50 $) more for every MHz.
I know that some people gonna buy this shit and pay for that. If that people knew that you only need to access BIOS/After Burner for it 😂😂😂😂
MAINTENANCE OF STACKOVERFLOW PLANNED
SHARE TO YOUR NEAREST DEV FRIENDS
Stackoverflow and its relative partners will be closed for two days due to maintenance, new design, and moving server infrastructure from United States to 1km below the Switzerland Alps for extra layers of security. This decision was made by the recent CloudFlare data leak.
Now our servers will be able to handle data leaks because even though the data was leaked, it will fill the empty places in the rocks resulting inaccessible from attackers.
Stackoverflow and its relative partners' maintenance estimated time is February 29 - 30. We will try to finish as fast as possible and bring you guys the best experience. If the maintenance delayes, we will tweet via @StackStatus or post details in our status blog.
Thank you for your support and have a happy day.

Someone in Indonesia is using my email adress to order stuff from a site called Lazada. My email account is not compromised as far as I know. But It's really annoying always getting order confirmation emails in bahasa Indonesia.
I've got "kikis" phone number and adress. Any advice what i've could do to make her stop?20
I was wondering, where the devRant community comes from. Where are you guys from?

Just came home from the cinema in zurich switzerland where Samsung installed the largest 4K LED TV. Yes that's not a textile canvas in the picture, it's a wall of led tiles called Samsung ONYX. It's a real pleasure to look at. High contrasts and brilliant color. I'm in love 😍

If programming languages were countries, which country would each language represent?
Disclaimer: its just a joke
Java: USA -- optimistic, powerful, likes to gloss over inconveniences.
C++: UK -- strong and exacting, but not so good at actually finishing things and tends to get overtaken by Java.
Python: The Netherlands. "Hey no problem, let'sh do it guysh!"
Ruby: France. Powerful, stylish and convinced of its own correctness, but somewhat ignored by everyone else.
Assembly language: India. Massive, deep, vitally important but full of problems.
Cobol: Russia. Once very powerful and written with managers in mind; but has ended up losing out.
SQL and PL/SQL: Germany. A solid, reliable workhorse of a language.
Scala: Hungary. Technically pure and correct, but suffers from an unworkable obsession with grammar that will limit its future success.
C: Norway. Tough and dynamic, but not very exciting.
PHP: Brazil. A lot of beauty springs from it and it flaunts itself a lot, but it's secretly very conservative.
LISP: Iceland. Incredibly clever and well-organised, but icy and remote.
Perl: China. Able to do apparently almost anything, but rather inscrutable.
Swift: Japan. One minute it's nowhere, the next it's everywhere and your mobile phone relies on it.
C#: Switzerland. Beautiful and well thought-out, but expect to pay a lot if you want to get seriously involved.
R: Liechtenstein. Probably really amazing, especially if you're into big numbers, but no-one knows what it actually does.
Awk: North Korea. Stubbornly resists change, and its users appear to be unnaturally fond of it for reasons we can only speculate on.16
I live in zurich switzerland one of the most expensive places to live. And i work as a jack of all trades graphic ux/ui designer/copy writer/marketeer in IT security.
I earn about $3800 a month, but every salery calculator says I should earn above $7000. With a median salery of $9300. But this seems so much money and I suffer from low self esteem. So what should I do? (Quitting is not an option because I like it there)12
On my way home, just noticed, that the display in the train, is only sorting the connections in the trainstation by time, but not by date. (SBB in Switzerland, in case you're wondering)5
I started my new position in Ireland about a month ago (relocated from Switzerland) and it‘s amazing how awesome life can be despite working full-time..
I have a 8-5 job, I usually get home around 6PM and have 6 hours left for myself every evening.. no calls, mails or similar after I leave the office.
Im actually not allowed to do overtime..
Everyone in the company is super nice and the Irish people are so incredibly welcoming and are happy to help if you need something..
So thankful right now..13
What was your most ridiculous story related to IT?
Mine was when I was quite small (11yo) and wanted a graphics card (the epoch of ATI Radeon 9800), looked at the invoice to know what kind of ports I had in the pc (did not open it), then proceeded to brat to my dad to get me a new GPU
So we where in Paris, we went to a shop, vendor asked me "PCI or AGP?" and said AGP.
Paris > London > Isle of Skye roadtrip followed, then as my dad brought me back home in Switzerland, we opened my pc...
And we couldn't fit the GPU in the basic old PCI port. My Dad was pissed. He frustratedly tried fitting the GPU in the PCI slot, but nope. (He's a software engineer though)
At least the GPU had 256 mb of ram :D
Gave it to my brother 6 months later at family gathering
To this day, my Dad still thinks I cannot handle hardware, although I have successfully built 10+ pc, and still cringes with a laughing smile when I talk to him about it haha
Designer ranting about designer.
Most graphic designer in switzerland have no clue on how to build a proper InDesign document. The design looks astonishing but when they want their design printed, they get roasted everytime.
No I can't print this ultra vibrant rgb color. This image has only 72ppi I need 300ppi in order to print this! WTF? What is this color setting? Japanese ICC color profiles? Are you retarded? No this layer composition is horrendous and unusable. WTF? a 60 page business report and no paragraph format presets? How I'm supposed to typeset this shit next year? No I can't print this fucktard, how long have been a graphic designer? 15 years? And you've still produce this crap? .... Every single time.
Thank goodness I don't work in print anymore.2
Joys of living in Switzerland:
We have four fucking national languages (english not included), with around 20 dialects of swiss german, most of us only know their origin language, yet stupid companies think we only speak one and assume it's fine to just send their filth in a language we may not understand.
Filter IPs and don't send your shit to regions that don't talk the language, or go and pay some translators (yes, they're expensive, but hey, you chose to sell/promote in Switzerland, deal with the fucking it). We are lazy and uninterested in your shit, so open your wallet if you want to reach us.
And it's not like I can't speak German, I'm just pissed for this inconsideration.

Can we talk about banks? Those fuckers! Suposed to keep our money save and be competent... They today gave me the biggest scare of my live and I've run one an update query on a prod db without a where clause! (Okay I knew we had a backup but still pretty scarry moment!)
As a few know, besides being a dev I help to organize a small openair music festival here in Switzerland. The openair was this weekend. Every thing wen't well, until I checked our ebanking account today. There was only 2/3 of the money that should be there. A quick call to the bank and they told me, nope they never received it. As we've thrown it in a secure locker during the night, we didn't receive any receipt or something like that. It took those fuckers 3.5 hours to actually go and check the looker, just to find the remaining money in the corner of it. What the fuck people, can't you open your fucking eyes and not give me a fucking heartatack? I thought you guys are professionals!
Note locker: we get a key to open it from the outside, place our payment during the night, as soon as we close it, it falls inside a vault, so there it's a pay in only system, for lack of a better word, I called it locker.
My heart is still beating like mad, because of them.4
This “Auto save” feature in the latest app version is buggy..
-> new rant
-> prefilled with previous rant..
Anyway, here my actual rant begins.
Apple, go fuck yourself, seriously.. put your trillion dollars way up your arse...
Moved to Ireland, want to switch country..
“If you want to switch countries, cancel your Apple Music subscription first”..
so be it. Cancelled it..
“Your subscription will be cancelled in 28 days”.
FUCK YOU, YOU COCK SUCKING BASTARDS!!
I NEED TO SWITCH THE STORE TO BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD BANKING APPS AND STUFF LIKE THAT..
But ok, I’m screwed in this regard..
Suddenly iMessage stopped working. This is kind of a big deal because I have unlimited data but only unlimited sms to Irish numbers and I need to communicate with people in Switzerland and Germany..
Internet works so I try to turn iMessage off and in again. But that doesn’t work.. i can only reactivate iMessage via WiFi.
So I go back to the hotel, reactivate iMessage..
“Verifying imessage” >> google..
Leads me to an Apple forum: “the verification of iMessage can take up to 24h”.
Are you fucking kidding me? I’m in a new country and rely on this overpriced shit..
Fun but sad fact, I have a second phone with me. IPhone 4 with iOS 7 and that thing WORKS!!
If this is where the future is going we’re all gonna die very soon.. plains crash, power plants explode but hey, at least they have data about it and it looks shiny. That’s all that matters..
Another reason to switch to android..
MacOs fucked me up so I already switched to windows + Linux. Next one will be getting rid of iOS, they don’t build small phones anymore anyway..3
Devrant++ not aviable in Switzerland? Im so sad 😭
Always getting errors when I wanna subscribe.
Wanted to support dfox and trogus9
!dev && education && ~German (survey is in German)
My girlfriend is doing her "A-levels" (the things you do to qualify for university). In Switzerland it's called Matura and in Germany Abi.
However for her final assignment she has to do a survey. Since it's in German, probably only People from Switzerland/Germany and Austria will be able to participate. However if you understand German feel free to participate!
The topic of the survey is "taboo topics" and the survey can be found here: http://we03sl.findmind.ch (takes less than 5 minutes)
Thanks a lot for your time (:17
The site I work on is a market where you can buy magnets for dolors, insomniaque, bla bla bla (I don't believe a sec in this).
Just saying that to settle that 80% of our customers are +45 years old. They weren't born with a computer in their hands, and they sometimes manage to make a lot of mess in the site.
We are based in France, and we sell the most in France (no shit) and Switzerland. And this is the third time that a Swiss pass a command, puts all her address in Switzerland EXCEPT for the country (still on France) so she doesn't have to pay the shipping fee. I should do something about that, like a regex when verifying the zip code, but I have more urgent work to do, and the best has to come.
This smartass doesn't know she is the joke, because by saying she is in France, she has to pay the VAT that she wouldn't have if she said she was in Switzerland. She buys in general for around 350 €, so she has ~ 70€ (20%) in VAT, and she would only pay 14€ in shipping fee.
Maybe one day she'll see how dumb she is (my boss already mailed her so she pays attention to it, no change). But I think I would have set the regex by then.
A company in Switzerland keep re-posting job openings for "ninja software engineers" on the university board. Maybe I should slide in with my black pyjamas and a katana and see If I make the cut?1
Back on DevRant, glad to be here 😁
I made something which I think is funny, but maybe it's just shit 😂
I have no idea what you guys know about Switzerland.
Here in Switzerland 🇨🇭, i have a 100/20mbps internet over cable for 120$ per month, with a fixed ip.
What about you? I’m interested about the price around the world.49
Frist time poster & 22 y.o. junior dev here.
I just wanted to get advice in which direction I should start my career.
I just finished my education last year as a Software Engineer and am now undecided if I should more go into Front- ore Backend.
I‘m currently doing mostly Python as a allrounder but am really intrested in React.
Is there a big difference in sallary (if that maters, I‘m from switzerland) or career oportunitys? How do I figure out the correct way I should go?
Thanks you so much for your help!17
f*** my company (80 people) was aquired today by the biggest telecom company in Switzerland. At least we can still work under our own brand more or less independently for now. What drives me crazy is that I land again in the same company where I was in my apprenticeship and have sworn not to return due to the size of the company (20k employees)!4
Fuck you Steam, just fuck you and your price politics.
I have a Swiss and one Russian Steam account. I have on my Swiss account over 450 Games and on the russian one around 4.
I have a friend in Russia and to play some games with him, I need a russian account.
Guess what? Since the last change to Steam Shop I cant use my Swiss Credit Card anymore to buy games in Russia.
Now when I want to test a game first on the russian account and when it's good to buy it after on my main Account, I can't.
Why should I pay for a game in Early Access the full price, when the game is bad and will be abadoned in a half year?
Sure they are some good early access games, which I payd the full price for (Switzerland has the highest Steam Game prices). As example ARK or Battlegrounds. I love these games and like to support the Devs.
But I get really angry when I have to pay for a Game which is worth 5 $ and sold in my Country for 20 $ and will be unsupported after a year.
Really fuck you Valve and Steam 🖕🏻🖕🏻😡
Atleast refund the people the money, when the game is abadoned! But sure, you're just in for a Cash Grab...4
Is there any other place in this world besides Switzerland where you get a fucking fine of ~ $40 for driving ONE bloody km/h too fast??? It’s about 0.7mph.. (after subtracting tolerance to be fair)
In other countries I drive they wouldn’t fine at all because it’s not worth the effort..1
Question about work experience.
Here in Switzerland you have 4 years of apprenticeship. (School + work, 50/50)
After that most uf us go to a higher degree (BSc oder MSc). Both can be taken part-time. Again about 50/50 school + work.
Now: Do you count thoses years as 8 or 4 or 0 work experience?3
After 4 years off apprenticeship and 10 days of totally focused work I just turned in my final exam! (45 Minutes ago)
The final exam for IT professionals (here in Switzerland) is a project that you work on for ten days at your workplace.
I thought I would feel relieved in any way.
But honestly, there are only two things in my head right now:
The constant thought off what could be wrong
I AM TOO TIRED FOR EVERYTHING!
The only thing that keeps me alive for now is the music shaking my ears2
Can you do a security / privacy check for ProtonVPN? All I know is that it is Switzerland based and pretty much secure.9
In Switzerland, when you are unemployed you need to candidate for a certain amount jobs per month in order to get money from the insurance...
So I applied to complete my list, but never intendet to actualy go to this (FUCKING) company... And here I am, and I want out :-(16
designrant / As a prepress media designer who study part time interaction design on fridays, I'm fucked. Every agency in switzerland is searching like crazy for Senior UX Interaction Designer. Because of that, they wont hire me as junior, until i have my degree as interaction designer. And printshops won't hire me because of my study. They say I'm overqualified as a prepress operator. fml! :-/6
Does anyone of you know a cheap vps-hoster in a country, where my data is relatively secure (Switzerland, Panama,...)?4
- Develop a cross platform app
- Try get job overseas, pref in Switzerland
- be self employed using my dev powers
- make my bike connected to internet. Dev a real-time dashboard. Try to add consciousness to bike.4
So I had this friend who has his own company, hosting is part of their business. He gave me a VM to host some websites, test stuff and whatnot. Free. I have quite some important stuff on there (personal, and a few demo sites for clients). No backups of my own, because they do nightly tape backups, and RAID accross physically seperated datacenters. Today, he just shut down my VM - for personal reasons (really personal, nothing to do with his company whatsoever, he hates me lately for something I can't influence). He doesn't say weather or when Ill get the data, and gave me no time to pull it. Can/should I go to the police? I just want my data back, but I don't know if I can do anything as it was free (no contract).
Me and my family had gone to Paris and Switzerland for vacation. We took alotta photos, there's was about 10GB worth photos in our iPad. The iPad was not working properly, so I backed up the photos to my laptop and gave the iPad for formatting.
Unfortunately, one fine day, my laptop shut down and never switched on again (long story short). We gave it for fixing, but it's still not fixed.
And so we lost all our photos, now there's no proof that we went to to those places 😆6
Why do actually only few companies have linux messaging backbones in switzerland...
It's really hard to find something.12
Any Irish people here?
I’m planning to move to Ireland in the next six months, probably somewhere near cork.
Currently I’m living in Switzerland but I’m actually german.
However, I have two major concerns:
1) my English is good but not that good. It’s probably a bit better than the German average but still far from fluent. I think in the first months it might be difficult to communicate in English all day long in the office.
Did you have any coworkers or friends who moved there from a non-native English speaking country? How did they do? Did the company have problems with being patient with those people?
2) how hard is it to find a job as a java developer with 7+y experience considering #1?
Bonus question: what do you guys actually think about Germans, am I welcome? :)12
On monday I start the first day of university at ZHAW in Winterthur, Switzerland.
Is there someone who starts, or it's already at that school?1
Thinking about when I get old enough I'd like to move somewhere like Switzerland or something, what do you guys think? Currently I live in Florida and hate the constant warm weather.5
So in my last rant I mentioned an ERP. This is its story:
When I started, all paperwork (including invoices, delivery slips, orders to suppliers etc.) was done on Word and some Excel, no specialised software whatsoever.
At some point (I already worked there for 2 years then), it became too much even for our boss, so he decided to spend some cash on the real deal.
After some looking around, he found software that seemed right (same vendor as our external bookkeeper used, so it would work with him too, nice). In order to save some money, he purchased it in Germany, as they offered a smaller product costing way less (we were based in Switzerland).
Once installed, we realised that this product was only meant to be used within the EU, as it only supported € as a currency and German VAT rates. We needed Swiss Francs and local VAT to work as well.
His solution looked as follows: I had the task to edit all forms via built-in MS Report Builder (god does it suck) to display the string CHF instead of €, and alter the on-sheet excel-like functions to use our VAT rates. Internally, the application of course still thought it was using € etc. For that reason, all output was unusable for bookkeeping, so we (as before) would just hand it in on paper.
If he had purchased the version sold here, all of the above would not have been the case, meaning support for multiple currencies and VATs, as well as direct transfer to the bookkeeper. He hardly saved 15k, in exchange for a non-working solution.2
I stumbled apon this software called vavoo.to, whith this you can watch Movies, Series, Live TV and more just started to reverse the apk.
Now out of curiosity how the fuck are they doing this with Live TV without hosting it themselves.
They also sell legally their own Android TV boxes with the pirated content from Switzerland. Why can they do this without being fucked from behind??
I will find it out eventually but this is interesting to reverse.
What would you recommend for an programming aprentice?
Dedicated server (DS) or shared hosting(SH)?
A DS is more expensive, but i could learn much more in Ops. Shared hosting is cheaper (and i already have a virtual one with access to root, but no sudo)...
- Greetings from switzerland.
PS i only choose swiss hoster ;)7
Moving to Zürich, Switzerland a good idea for 110k?
Job sounds great, just not sure about switzerland... Any remarks, tipps, trick?1
