Me and my love-hate Linux.
I lost virginity really early. In the age of 5 it was my first time with windows 95. I spend almost 10 years with Windows before something happened that would change everything. I met Linux. Her forename was Arch. I had a crush on her right from the beginning. It didn't take long for me to abandon windows. Arch had everything I wanted. She had latex which was pretty hot and looked simply and elegant on her. Sometimes she was really hard to deal with and almost drove me crazy, but I knew I fell in love.
Until that day. I had to write a short paper which was quite fun and Linux helped me alot. It was a breeze to work with her. The evening before the deadline she was quite thoughtful. She sometimes was, so I thought it'll be alright, but this time was different. She struggled a bit, so I put her to sleep and she never woke up. I brought her to the emergency lab which was open 24/7. Since no one was there I had todo the surgery myself. After 5 hours I was almost to tired to continue when she finally woke up. I asked her about the things she should remember for me - then I killed her. I started to hate Linux for what she had done to me. The unbelievable stress and horror.
I returned to Windows. Besides that she got a bit more curious what I was doing when and where nothing really changed and she was glad to have me back. I just was happy how simple our relationship was.
One day then, I couldn't believe it at first, I met Archs sister. Manjaro. No matter how strange that is, but it was as if I would meet Linux again for the first time. She was just a bit simpler but as flexible as arch. Since then we are happy together. It seems that we both just grew up a little.
And with Windows? She got even more curious! Actually I have the feeling she is stalking me now, but I don't regret anything!15 -
Note to myself : Searching "String LaTeX" on google might give you something quite different from what you expected2

Assembly: He’s the nerd. He speaks very quickly and uses short sentences. Very few people talk to him. He’s considered to be an autist asperger by a majority of the class because he finishes the exams so quickly it’s insane and he faces a lot of difficulties in speaking with others. He’s at school but already dressed like an engineer.
Ada: She’s a foureyes nerd. When she gets the answer she’s doesn’t make any mistake. Ada often corrects the teacher when she writes a line a little ambiguous. She’s building a rocketship in her backyard and she’s always speaking about this weird hobby.
Python: He’s Mr Popular. He likes skate, brags about all the parties he’s invited to. He’s good in all the subjects taught in class but he’ll do them a bit slower than the others. Everyone loves him because he explainsthings so well, sometimes the teacher herself asks Python to explain some part of the course. He’s dressed with a hoodie, a baggy and glasses on the top of the head ;)
Java: She is one of the toppers of the class and very popular. She’s very good in all the topics. The teacher loves her but she’s a very talkative person.
Scala/Kotlin: They are twin sisters and the best friends of Java. Unfortunately, they are not as popular and it’s often Java who takes the lead in the group. It’s very difficult to distinguish one from another. Both are far less talkative than Java but Scala speaks a bit differently than Kotlin and Java.
C: He’s the topper of the class. He’s so fast in completing the exams that the teacher really thinks he’s copying Assembly’s work. He has a little brother C++ and they share a lot in common together. He’s the chess major and often plays chess with Assembly and his big brother.
Go: He’s the new kid on the bloc. He doesn’t like C++ and his friends and he wants to prove he can do better than them. Of course, he prefers playing Go over Chess.
APL: He’s a lonely guy. No one understands him when he speaks. Even the teacher is surprised when APL shows a correct answer after several lines of incomprehensible pictograms. People think that he was born in a foreign country… or a foreign planet ?
HTML/CSS: These twin brothers are very different. One is dressed in black and white and the other is dressed with everything except black and white. HTML is very talkative and annoying and the CSS is very artistic. CSS is the best student in Art lessons and HTML performs well in written expression.
LaTeX: She’s friend of HTML. The teacher likes her because she has a gift of writing. LaTeX likes the mathematical courses because she can draw fancy greek letters. The teacher knows this well and she is often asked to write a formula on the black board.
VBA: He’s in the back, looking through the windows. Not really interested in the courses taught in class. In the exams, he answers always with a table.
C#: He’s in the back playing yet another game on his smartphone. He likes being next to the windows also.
JavaScript: People often mix up Java and JavaScript because they have a similar name. But they are definitly not the same. Javascript spends a lot of time with HTMLand CSS. He’s as artistic as CSS but he prefers things that move. He likes actions and movies. CSS dreams to be a painter wheras JavaScript wants to be a film-maker.
Haskell: He’s a goth. Dressed up in dark. Doesn’t talk to anyone. He doesn’t understand why others write pages when he can write a couple of lines to answer the same question.
Julia: She’s the newest student here. She doesn’t have any friends yet but her secret aim is to be as popular as Python and as fast as C.

Being a computer science student and having a lot non-coding-assignments to do, I am proud to say:
I love LaTeX!12 -
So apparently using utf8 with LaTeX isn't enough to get € symbol working, I have to include two more packages for that (two, because one handles the character, and the other one makes it look "not weird"). How hard can it be to just use a single utf8 font, and have it work with whatever utf8 character you type in? And apparently there are at least 3 packages specifically for euro symbol - a certain XKCD comic comes to mind...11

This dumb pretentious bitch.
We are both computer science students, she is writing her bachelor thesis, I'm in 4th semester, but have 6 years of professional programming experience.
So naturally when she had a problem implementing the MOTHERFUCKING PREPARING SOFTWARE, which she needs to begin writing her thesis I helped her.
First I started explaining every last bit of code, trying to teach her something, so that she wouldn't need my help ALL the time.
After a while I realised that this BLOODY GIRL FROM HELL acquired nearly half her credits by other peoples help, so I just fix the code hoping it would be over soon.
When that software was done, keep in mind, I coded nearly 90 FUCKING PERCENT OF THAT SHITTY ASS PIECE OF CRAP SOFTWARE, she asked me to also "help" her implementing a generator for samples she could test the software with.
Naturally at this point I said I'd be busy with own projects etc. And declined.
So now, nearly 1 Month after she didn't talk to me, THAT ARROGANT PIECE OF SHIT WANNABE SCIENCE BACHELOR asked if I could help her with LaTEX.
At first I was speechless. How could she have that amount of balls, asking me that. As I only am a ranting asshole inside, I declined in the most polite way.
WHAT THE FUCK! I HOPE YOU WILL FAIL YOUR THESIS AND ALL THE 12 SEMESTERS YOU STUDIED WILL HAVE BEEN FOR NOTHING, THUS SENDING YOU TO LIVE ON THE STREET WITHOUT MONEY AND DIE A HORRIBLE AND LONELY DEATH SURROUNDED BY BEGGERS TRYING TO STEAL YOUR KIDNEYS!
Sincerely,
Me.14 -
Being forced to use Word if you are used to LaTex is like use colorful plastic toy drill when you know how to operate CNC milling center.9
-
Submitting my homework in LaTex makes me want to print it out and hang it on the wall because it is so beautiful.11
-
So my local job center had me convert my LaTeX CV into Word format, as apparently PDF is to techy for them.5

New semester, new problems....
Just started my 6th semester at uni and my teammates are already proving to be serious dumbfucks..
They want to keep all files neat and organized, sure, fine, good idea.
They want to use Dropbox to store code and our LaTeX report, no, never! Somehow managed to get them to switch to GitHub, yay!
They want to have everything in one fucking repo! Why? Oh god, why? And I can't change their mind on this!
And they still want to use Dropbox to have a backup and sync between their machines...
So during this semester, we will store our LaTeX report and the, at minimum, 3 code projects, in the same repo organized by folder!
Why not one project, one repo? Then I won't have to pull all the shit code that I don't have to work with!
Expect more rants in the coming months...2 -
Now I am afraid to open Microsoft Word, because there is always someone asking me "Why not use LaTeX?".14
-
I think I have accidentally invented the term 'noteporn' the moment a colleague saw my lesson notes taken in LaTeX and said: "Wow, your notes are so beautiful one could fap on those!"4
-
Installing all the needed Latex dependencies on linux takes maybe 15 seconds, on windows I need 5GB of space and it takes forever to install.39

Walking down the street today eating this amazing croissant and sipping iced coffee when I run into this old lady and she was like “hey how are you?” And I was like “good thanks want some of this croissant it’s absolutely delicious” and she was like “No thanks, I want to tell you that those who eat alone, die alone”…
Like wow the audacity of this bitch. Get your old wrinkly latex skin with blotches lookin ass outta my face before you die alone today hoe.
Don’t take no shit from nobody - treat yourself like you the shit.27 -
I’m updating my résumé, and want to redo it from scratch — I’ve just been migrating the same document between OpenOffice (and later LibreOffice) versions for 15+ years, so it’s pretty buggy now.
As I’m redoing it from scratch anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on what I should build it in/with instead? Is there anything that works particularly well?
I’ve been considering learning and using Latex, but I’m not sure.30 -
I've started writing Rust code for fun. My initial experience with it is that its like writing a program wearing a surgery mask and latex gloves with a condom around your keyboard, while you sit in a padded room with a nanny nagging over your shoulder.
The borrow checker is somewhat of a pain in the ass to deal with.
But that said, I've never been so safe and confident my code won't fail during runtime before.
And the best part: it's blazing fast.7 -
I'm writing my bachelor thesis in LaTeX. As people who use LaTeX might know, it generates shitloads of files while compiling (like 10 files per .tex file).
To unclutter my project folder, I wrote a simple one-liner bash script that deletes all files which are not .tex or .bib files (literature references) and of course it will not delete itself (although that one also took me longer to figure out why my script 'kept disappearing for no reason after I ran it' than I'd like to admit).
However, I forgot that images are also files which are stored in the project-folder.
And this is how I suddenly lost all of my images for no reason at all, resulting in my PDF not building anymore. Luckily we all commit and push all regularely, right...
Edit: I just figured out that I'm even stupider than originally thought... My .gitignore ans more importantly, the '.git' folder also neither end in .tex nor .bib. Guess I'll just go fuck myself.10 -
Should I bother with LaTeX? I've been fine with Markdown until now, but lately I've been facing an inferiority complex about it lol10
-
Not exactly dev stuff, but LaTeX low-key makes me nervous.
In writing my thesis it seems that through some keyboard-fuckery I managed to slip in some weird unicode bullshit character somewhere, so that it doesn't compile. Alright, I just do \DeclareUnicodeCharacter{0301}{ASDF} so that it gets replaced by ASDF. Searching for ASDF in the output pdf file does not yield results, so I can't even find the location of the fuckery in the text. It seems that unicode character is somewhere in my .bib-file and I guess my citation style doesn't even render the part of the data that character is in after all. So the above hack works, but still there is some weird-ass character in my bibliography file that I can't find.
On another note: I get that modularity is cool and all, but who thought that it is a good idea to give people zero transparency over what macro stems from which included package? No namespaces etc. I end up including a whole lot of packages that are needed for exactly one macro. That bloats up the file and you have no way to trace back which macro came from which of the quazillion included packages.
...then again maybe I'm just a lazy piece of shit whose google searches end before success and all of the above has some easy fix.9 -
Nothing big, but the time I felt the most useful and awesome guy in the world was when I wrote a script creating PDF cover letters from a csv file with contacts names for my gf. A bit of Latex and python, a few hours to make it resilient to special characters, but the look of relief (she would have done it by hand) and admiration in her eyes truly made me feel proud :)1

Tip: If you try to show LaTeX to someone and you want to show them examples, don't use the images of your search engine of choice for the examples unless you put "formula" next to it.
My teacher at least understood, lul.6 -
I was browsing through xkcd when I came across this comic. Then I realised that a line break after every sentence is actually what I do when writing something in LaTeX. It has no effect in the end but I feel like it makes the document clearer while working with it. Anyone else who does this? ^^'1
-
Every time I have to recall how to LaTeX, it's a huge pain in the ass. It's like learning to code in Greek (I don't know Greek). Happens every single time (it can be months before I need to use it again).
However.
Every time I finish my creation, I fall in love with LaTeX all over again.5 -
My 13yo brother started learning Haskell and latex on his own. When I was 13yo I learned C. I really want to see how his career path will go compared to mine3

That moment when your mobile internet is so slow and you decide to ssh into your server and use elinks to browse the web and everybody around you is like "he's hacking" and I'm like IM JUST TRYING TO READ FUCKING NEWS BECAUSE GUESS WHO DOESNT PAY SO MUCH FUCKING MONEY FOR 1GB PER MONTH WHERE 500MB ARE USED AFTER VISITING ONE FUCKING SITE BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY DAMN ADS ON IT. I JUST WANT TO READ NEWS OR LEARN SOME C++++++++++ BUT INTERNET IS TOO SLOW TO OPEN FUCKING DDG.
Browsing the web in terminal is super nice btw. Really recommend that8 -
Fucking IEEE pdf eXpress breaks this fucking paper.
The paper has been accepted, and we just need to upload a fucking camera-ready. But what was supposed to be a breeze, is now a nightmare with us spending the entirety of last night and evening trying to figure out why the fuck the latex gutter is keep throwing the same fucking error despite that we've used their own fuckin template, and don't have anything but text and images.
Fuck IEEE for making shit harder. Fuck their stupid submission system. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I don't want to go back to work today. I literally had a 15 hours day yesterday. 😭😭😭😭17 -
Upon reflection, I think that the amount of math I learned in school pales in comparison to the amount I learned about LaTeX. I could pretty reliably recreate the textbook rendition of the problem. Maybe it's just me but just knowing the solution felt too abstract. I want a solid looking execution of it.
I'm graduating today so I don't know how relatable this is for everyone else. I'm just reflecting.3 -
Primarily IntelliJ IDEs.
I'm using IDEA for Rust & Kotlin, PHPStorm, Datagrip (DB), and sometimes PyCharm CE.
IDEs can feel a bit dirty with how heavy they are, and the lack of customization/control. But at the end of the day there's just nothing that can measure up against IntelliJ's inspections, integrations and project indexing.
My ideal product would be one universal IntelliJ IDE, but combined with the openness of VSCode/Atom, having everything transparently configurable through stylesheets and scripts.
As an editor though.... I use Vim for LaTeX, Markdown, plain text and Haskell code... but not so much for other programming languages.
Vim was my first editor when I moved from C64 to PC development 25 years ago, and while you get used to balancing keybind vimgolfing with being actually productive, i've always found maintaining plugins and profiles too cumbersome -- the reality is that Vim is an awesome TEXT editor, but it's really awful as a CODE editor out of the box.
When you want to try out a new programming language, you don't want to have to mess around with your Vimrc and Vundle and YCM for half a day just so you can comfortably write "Hello World" in Rust or Elixir... you just want to click one install button, press F10 to compile and see if it flies.
Oh, and I use Xed a lot for quickly editing files... because it's the default GUI editor on Mint desktops, and it's quite good at being a basic notepad.1 -
LaTeX should have an option to notify you every time you catastrophically misspell words and turn a "six" into "sex"...
🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️6 -
So here I am again. Writing my final assignment for the first 2/3 of my bachelor's degree. After 9 hours of constant writing yesterday, it's an understatement to say that the motivation is low.8

First of all: FUCK MS WORD!!!
second: even tho I LOVE LaTeX, fuck LaTeX tables!!!
I mean, yeah, I am used to them, but maaaaaaaannn1 -
Got a hi-end latex mattress and it’s godly. We usually overlook mattresses because a person uses one since the early childhood and a mattress is not a thing that is often changed, contrary to clothes or boots.
Absolutely invest in a good one.7 -
God I love being able to use MathJax on GitHub, despite it being quite a pain to get it perfect.
https://github.com/OpenlyEducated/...
( Manually adjusted the spacing for readability~ )
( Still needs color though.. )
Also the bug that broke all inline mathjax for a week wasn't exactly helpful..1 -
That’s it I’m done with writing documents like Software Product Specifications and Software Requirements Documents and Software Architecture Documents, manuals, data sheets and more in MS word..
I’m doing it all form this point forward in LaTeX... I can stay in my editor, it works beautifully with version control because it’s just text... I can split it amung multiple files.. it looks damn sexy. I can focus on the content rather than being distracted by formatting and spelling issues and the rest of that shit.. ALSO.. it doesn’t crash or get corrupted.. well at-least I’ve never had a text editor crash or corrupt my files.
Idk why I didn’t learn latex sooner and do the switch.6 -
We have this one professor in a mathematics course.
He sits there having no plan of what he's doing. He literally opens his python Jupiterbook with latex enabled, writes a complex equation and tries to solve it in 10 minutes. Makes mistakes every few steps and deletes his formatted equation that isn't even interpreted yet (we see the cdot etc. instead of * which makes it even harder to read). Every few minutes some student corrects him and he deletes it again.
Why can't you just think first and then write and try to teach us?
Use as much time as you want as long as you don't have to keep reverting back the humanly unreadable latex equation.
Hell, you are also allowed to use a basic pen and paper. Trust me, that shit is more readable, even if you have a bad handwriting, than your squeezed in complex untranslated latex equation in Jupiterbook.
Btw. he also streams with no zooming in I might add.
Am I supposed to trying to read your small as shit, focus on what you're teaching while you keep making mistakes or write it down on paper and practice the given tasks?
On top of that, he records the zoom conference but he doesn't share it anywhere on the college forum so that people who have missed it can download it and rewatch it.
Everything he does makes no sense. How did he become a mathematics professor with a PhD?5 -
I'm not sure why but I don't seem to like latex. Maybe I could get into it but it just feels weird.10
-
My boss gave me a lab pc (not controlled by the internal IT) so I can put whatever OS I want on there. I'm planning to also write certain documents with something like LaTeX on it.
When he gave it to me, he said “but don't goo too overboard with it, I know much time you can sink into Linux and TeX”
Me, actually planning to go fully overboard in every aspect: “haha yeah don't worry I'll just install Ubuntu or something”8 -
How are people writing documents/reports? Markdown/Latex in your fav editor and export to PDF? Word? Pages? Libre Office?
I use Markdown, via VSCode, Bear, iA Writer, Marked and then push to PDF. If I have to, then export to DOCX.5 -
Recruiter: «I have an opportunity [...] J2EE development [...] please send CV in .doc format»
Where is my flame thrower?4 -
Latex, can you for once be nice and not fuck up my images, please?
Can you stop pushing this image which you clearly have enough space for to the next page and leave the previous page completely empty??9 -
Fucking MikTex.
Apparently this software got stuck somewhere back in the nineties. Got a fresh installation to make sure issues were not arising from outdated hardware - still connection errors, API errors, horrible, unresponsive and ugly UI, what a broken piece of ****.7 -
My thesis supervisors gave me a set of templates and guidelines for the whole thing and argh.
they constantly assume that I've no fucking idea about academic writing despite the very good graded talks and texts I handed in in the past - granted, they probably often deal with inexperienced students.
but what they've given me.. a) the thesis template does not work, they fucked up some latex packages and b) there's a almost passive aggressive 3 page explanation on academic writing and how wo work with sources and references and they forgot the fucking references lol. There are none included and the references all go like [?].15 -
Writing hebrew in Latex using a template that doesn't support UTF-8 is the most archaic shit I've done lately. I feel like some sort of a caveman.
This fucking encoding inverts all letters so it can support right to left. 😓4 -
Why the fuck didn't I use LaTeX sooner, even though I knew for years of its existence...
Bye Word and Libre Office and Open Office!
Now I CODE my docs in vscode!19 -
My image of dream career through different times of my life:
- frontend specs prodigy, css enlightenment, a member of w3c or a similar committee
- indie hacker and entrepreneur, leader of a startup community
- architecture prodigy, expert in scalability
- transsexual evangelist, popular article writer and a rockstar
- hardware engineer: Linux, C, chip and dale’s Gadget-like girlfriends, xkcd, latex, assembly, buying a radio station and a telescope
- scientist like NickyBones, papers, data, more data
- art expert
Though achieving one of this would take the entire life, I had a chance to grasp all of this. WHY does they feel so incompatible? Why do I have to choose?
Why do I feel so sad? Why do I feel like I haven’t achieved anything even though I objectively achieved what I dreamed of like five years ago?
Is it true that it’s in my nature to always seek an environment to feel like a junior in? Is feeling like a junior only pleasant to me because it reminds me of old times when I wasn’t actually this mentally ill and was still happy?
Why do I feel like that arduino and C shit is the equivalent of a red corvette?6 -
The time to write an essay about programming in fucking LaTeX for the first time takes too fucking long!14
-
When I only want to code, but university LaTeX bullshit burns my time 😭 they dont even have clear rules.
Not to mention that their formatting rules make my work look like shit I would never read myself.5 -
LaTeX is all fun and cool and awesome until you encounter a stupid formatting issue that is impossible to fucking fix in a sensible amount of time.1
-
My presentation looks unappealing (LaTex magic) and apparently due to Adobe stuff, videos on overleaf don't play.
So, I have the choice of moving to another format (google slides of M$ powerpoint) by tomorrow, or switch between the media player and the presentation slides.
Both look... More unappealing than my presentation. 😒🙄😤7 -
Today was a rather funny day in school. School starts for me at 13:40 because our timetable planners are so qualified for this job.
First 2hrs: Physics, fine its good
Second 2hrs: Discrete Maths (however you want to call it)
Goal is to write a text (30 pages, 10, etc all those standard settings). Teacher prefers Latex over word, but we can do it in word if we want. We could choose a topic, I took primes because it looked the best. I decided to use latex because I'm a fetishist and it simply looks better in the end. A classmate was arguing with our teacher about ides: texmaker vs kile. And I'm like "I use vim". So my teacher is like kk
Later that class, when we actually started doing stuff I started the ssh session to my server because I don't know any good c++ compilers for win and I'm too lazy to get a portable version of cygwin (or whatever its called). So in my server I open vim and start coding my tool for Fermat Primes (Fermatsche Primzahlen, too lazy to actually translate). And this teacher seriously is the best teacher I ever met in my life. Usually teachers are like " dude r u hakin' the school server?" and I'm like bruh its just vim and I'm doing it this way because I cannot code on your PC coz I can't install a compiler. And this teacher is like "oh hey you actually use vi, all cool kids used it in 2000. I first though u were kidding and stuff..." And we continued talking about more of stuff like that and I have to say that this is the first teacher that actually understands me. Phew
Now I'm going to continue writing my 30 pages piece of trash latex doc and hope it'll end good1 -
Well it's nothing I wrote myself but I don't know why it exists.
I currently work on a reasonably big LaTeX (markup/typesetting) project.
For what ever reason someone had the glorious idea to build a Compiler in Java to compile the LaTeX sources to PDF, so far so good.
The problem is that
1. Most people working on that project either use an editor with its own compiling functionality or
2. use the shell script in the same fucking directory
Of course the Compiler is also slower than both of the above and tends to crash.
Well at least it's not my time which went into there. -
When you write LaTeX, do you code? Typeset? Program? Type random stuff so that in the end the PDF looks good enough to publish it?
I really feel like it's coding but it also is typesetting. Hmm, the questions of life!14 -
I just spent 2-3 hours writing a python script to make it easier to format solving system of equations through Gaussian elimination easier. It takes a matrix, then allows the user to perform row operations on it, and then it formats every operation done into LaTeX.
Alternatively, I could have spent that time actually working on the assignment it was meant to help me with, and probably finished 3/4 of it.1 -
I had to choose a subject for a math project. So I selected encryption (elliptic curve). I decided to make an interactive demo website. First time working with node, websockets, large numbers and latex. Most fun project I ever did. I am still proud on the result and how fast I did it (~3 weeks)
-
Little OT but I'm about to submit my phd thesis for print and electronic publishing. Publisher scaled the A4 version to A5 but lost all links that were in the document (LaTeX & hyperref).
Tried to solve the problem by myself using Ghostscript but got lost at CropBox, MediaBox, TrimBox and page size. One day is already lost.1 -
Time for a new programming language. LaTeX! It's definitely very different than what I'm used to, but very useful.13
-
Last night I had a dream that knowing how to use Kali Linux was one of the requirements for a job I was looking at applying for.
So I was thinking to myself "hey, I know Kali, I should put that on my resume," but I was too lazy to do it right away, and when I did try to add it, my resume wouldn't compile (LaTeX) because one of the brackets was missing, but I couldn't find where the missing bracket was.
It was weird...1 -
Ok finally, I can tell now.
There's a college project I'm in with 2 more people that uses Python and AnyLogic (separately).
We also need to write some LaTeX, so as I was already using PyCharm for the Pyshit, I used it for the LaTeX and for Git.
I used it for Git too because I didn't know how it used Git and was worried that if I used the console it didn't recognize something or glitched out or something. And what the hell, it's a mature IDE, what could be so hard or possibly go wrong?
I had to re download the repo a couple of times because between pushes, pulls, merges and commits something happened and the repo ended in a weird state.
These are all the things I do:
Add, commit, create branches, merge, push, pull and delete branches.
So, I hadn't opened in some time. The last time I tried to bring something from another branch, and stayed up late to finish something. I was waiting for my classmates to join the call when I thought something like "Hey, I should commit what I did until now, it worked great.". When I examined the IDE I found out I was in the middle of a rebase or something. I start clicking buttons to at least try to commit. I press "Skip Commit". I lose everything.
What the fuck‽ As you can see in the comprehensive list above, I never do something similar to a rebase. Apparently when I tried to merge a couple of branches, the stupid IDE thought I tried to do a rebase and never asked me to finish it. Why do something I have never asked? Plus, why haven't you prompted me to finish the operation? That's so stupid. I'm never trusting IDEs again.
I was so lit for losing so many hours of work I did a couple of weeks before, I would have to think it and do it all over again because of something I never asked.
We spent an hour looking for a way to recover the lost code.
Why an hour, you ask, if you can use the Local History for that in PyCharm?
Because none of us had used it before and the articles we found said that you had to open it from the toolbar. From the toolbar it was greyed out.
Then I found the option in the contextual menu of the files. Recovered the LaTeX files but on the AnyLogic files, it was greyed out.
I had to open the Local History of the folder containing the AnyLogic file.
And that was that.
I almost faint.
Fuck Python, fuck PyCharm.8 -
I really love LaTeX. It’s very much what makes the written word enjoyable, which helps when writing a thesis. Then I insert an image.
-
Does anyone out here work with MATLAB and/or Latex? Because I started learning both for school and I have to say that I really like them!4
-
I just discovered the /usr/share/doc/texlive-doc/latex folder... My god there is so much material in there, gotta love the dedication these people put into their docs
-
Finally I have something decent for my résumé.
I was going through some LaTeX hell before someone started a cv tools discussion. It was good to learn that json cv is a thing. But it was too late for me. LaTeX posed a challenge and I was bored. It became personal.
After a lot of kicking around and landing on XeLaTeX, I finally have a decent layout. I had to compromise a tiny bit but that's on me for having little content.
(I wanted a graphic résumé but I'll need to do more to sufficiently fill a page. Besides I'd need to design icons and shit for it.)
Now it's done and my job hunt can start!3 -
Today I spent 2.5h missing a flag in pdfLaTeX just because I forgot I am working on a different machine with different settings. #FML
I should have a central VM server!1 -
First and foremost, students should be carefully taught the logic and mentality behind programming. Most of the time I see that the introductory programming courses waste so much energy in teaching the language itself. So students kinda just get fucked cause many people end up ending the course without having actually gained the "programming perspective".
Stop teaching pointers and lambdas and even leave the object oriented stiff till later. If a student doesn't know why we use a For loop then how can they learn anything else.
I believe once that thing in your brain clicks about programming, everything goes smooth from there... kinda :P
Second of all, and this pertains mainly to the engineering and science disciplines.
We need a fundamental and strong mathematical foundation. And no I don't mean taking fucking double integrals. Teach us Linear Algebra, Graph theory, the properties of matrices, and Probability theory.
One of the things I suffered from most and regret in university is having a weak foundation in math and having to spend more time catching myself up to speed.
It's so annoying reading a paper on a new algorithm or method and feeling like an idiot because I can't understand what magic these people did.
Numerical Methods...
Ok this is more deeper, maybe a 2nd year course.
But this is something we take for granted.
Computers don't magically add and subtract and multiply.
They fuck up.
And it'll bite you in the ass if you're not even aware that the computer we all love so much isn't as perfect as we think
Some hardware knowledge.
Probably a basic embedded systems course with arduinos
just so you can get a feel for how our beautiful software actually makes those electrons go weeeeeeeee
And finally
Practice practice
Projects projects
like honestly
just give me the internet and some projects
Ill learn everything else
Projects are the best motivation
I hate this purely theoretical approach
where we memorize or read code and write these stupid exams
Test what we are capable off
make us do projects that take sleepless nights and litres of coffee
And judge our methods, documentation, team work, and output
Team work skills and tools (VCS, communicating, project management, etc.)
Documentation and Reporting
Properly
:)
maybe even with LaTeX :D
Yeah that's the gist of whats on my mind at the moment regarding an ideal computer science education
At least the foundations
The rest I leave it to the next dude. -
> Underfull \hbox (badness 10000)LaTeX
FUUUUUUU Latex!
I don't care about the badness of my hboxes, cause I'm a badass myself.
At least the document looks nice.5 -
Oh god why!?
Somehow I decided that it would be nice to have a proper spell&grammar checker in VS Code for me and my friends to write our reports in Latex with.
Decided I wanted multiple language support, so I turned to language tool.
GOD is this thing slow as a very unmotivated snail!
3s to process 9 phrases!? And then add one second to pack the results in a JSON string!? An option that I'm still very grateful exists, but why the fuck would you disallow line-by-line processing, which you expressly recommend for IDEs, and which cuts processing time by 30%, when JSON output is asked!?
Well, serves me right for thinking for even a second that a Java program could have decent performance...
This whole thing is starting to look like it's not gonna be nearly as fun ss I anticipated it to be.2 -
I spent the last 3 *fucking* hours trying to get bloody BibLatex working on my machine. fuck me upside down with a rusty chainsaw >:( How hard can it possibly be to get 1 fucking reference working for god's sake!!? Referencing its basically the whole fucking reason people use latex alongside typesetting math, why is it so fucking hard!! And to add insult to injury it was working fine in Overleaf, but i have to go through fucking hours of pointless googling and swearing if i wanna do the exact same thing in TexStudio. Fuck! LateX can go to hell, i could have written so much in this time if only the piece of shit bibtex would cooperate a bit...1
-
During the last days I got criticized by a fellow student, why I love 'error prone software'... He means git, mkdocs, latex etc. - I love them!
Does anyone of you really prefer svn over git?6 -
On my list:
* John Romero (id Software)
* Yukihiro Matsumoto (Ruby programming language)
* Donald Knuth (LaTeX)
* Gosuke Myashita (serverspec)
* Johan de Wit (puppet guru and my personal sensei that taught me a lot of things and also a good friend I cherish)2 -
Well, jokes on me, I'm using MS Word (latest) for my master thesis. I know, i know, I should use LaTeX for such things or Scrivener, but I just had enough of that bullshit of learning another language which costs me time that I don't have.
Back to my problem: I don't get why for christ sake that SmartArt bullshit was programmed in the first place!?!? It lacks of everything to configure and gives you just a pain in the ass whenever you use it!
Whoever designed that peace of crap should use that shit forever as punishment!
I HATE MICROSOFT! WHY WAS THIS COMPANY EVER ALLOWED TO EXIST!?!?!
Gods DAMN!1 -
Maaan, why does Latex have to suck /this/ much. I know it's very powerful and you can do complex layout and typography but COME ON. Surely there has to be a better way6

( Temporarily Relevant )
Is it just me or did GitHub just break most of their MathJax?
Were formulas but now I only see my LaTeX code..

OMFG bless the guy maintaining MikTex for Windows, if only had installed this instead of TexLive the first time around I'd probably be a lot more sane right now (and I would have passed more uni exams).
I genuinely wanna shout my lungs out in frustration... I wasted over a fucking month trying to get my TexLive install to work the way I wanted it to, and now with just a simple automatic installer everything works exactly the way I wish it did, it's so fucking perfect!
Sigh3 -
Fuck! I spent the last 3 hours trying to set up inline preview for latex for spacemacs but it won't compile cause of fucking warnings! 😂 But at least I know why my references can be inconsistent cause hyperref package is fucking trash, and it's supposedly the best choice for cross-referencing there is.
Alright, rant over. Will try look for workarounds tomorrow.2 -
Time to scare the shyat out of some muggles by VIMing some LaTeX. Make'em think I'm hacking the train. Mwahahaha
-
I am really tired and frustrated.
Where should I even start?
I have created a TeX element with "/Math".
Then I have tried to type in a sum sign which works with "\\sum". BUT it won't let me display numbers below and above the sign. I tried to fix this by typing in "\\sum{someNum}{some\_other\_num}". It didn't work. I tried "\\qquad \\displaystyle\\sum\_{i=1}\^n". It still doesn't work. I tried "\\underset{}{}". It didn't work.
I tried to import the ams package. It didn't work.
I tried to read the official notion documentations. They didn't exist.
I tried some of the above KaTeX commands, because I saw that notion is using a KaTeX parser. "\\qquad" worked whereas "\\;, \\>" etc. didn't work.
"\\newline" and "\\\\" don't work.
When you have your formula written, it displays the latex commands and the results together when you don't edit the TeX/Math element anymore.
I would be very thankful for helpful answers.8 -
Fucking hell! I'm trying to sit down and learn LaTeX so I can take notes with math formulas in the notes. Between work, random bullshit, crappy roommate drama, cats with the zoomies, and the kiddo going nuts wanting to play I just can't catch a fucking break to studying.
I'm torn between drinking a cup of coffee at 10pm to be able to get a chance to study or being able to sleep tonight...
However in the hell did I convince myself that going back to school at 30 would work better than when I was 19-20?!? (I'm still only 29 but shit I loose steam quickly these days 😰)
Lol I'll update the rant here if I drink that cup of 10pm joe!4 -
Why do tech writers always produce deliverable documents in Word files instead of Markdown, LaTeX, or anything that is easy to CM? It would be easier to track revision history and dump out of the CI/CD pipeline to the customer.4

A month ago, I spent a lot of time on looking for different types of CV/resume to find the one fits my needs. The problem with overleaf was that there many pages and too duplicate templates with minor changes.
So I tried to create a list of them with previews to quickly pick the best. don't forget to star if you want to update yours in future :

First semester tutorials are fun (spoiler they can be frustrating).
Today my University held an entry level tutorial for LaTeX, which I had already visited a year ago and offered to help and boy ohh boy was that painful. For your information all of these students want to study computer science.
From around 50 people there was only one person who used Linux and I thought "Well at least one".
I was even more impressed as the other tutors asked me to help her because she used Manjaro (also the distribution I use).
As i helped her installing texstudio (the software presented) I needed her to enter the root (?) password and she answered "Which password, it's the laptop of my sister, I thought the laptop had windows installed".
Everything worked out fine but this was only the beginning.
After an hour came the first exercise in which the students had to build a simple document and for everyone who doesn't know LaTeX, it's a markdown language which heavily relies on \ and {}.
And there laid the other most common problem, some Mac users didn't even know how to write a \ or {}.
At least I had some fun helping them but if you want to study computer science you should be able to know how to write some of the most common symbols in programming languages. -
How can a LaTex document simply stop compiling after some months? Is this shit not downward compatible with newer versions? This stupid language and all those fucking compilers this is the worst user experience ever. Gonne re-type the thing in Word now5

Started documenting on how to use LaTeX ( MathJax ) in Markdown.
https://github.com/MarkedDown/Math
Let me know if you have a topic that you would like to be documented sooner than others~
Image shows an example usage
from a project I'm working on:

Just discovered the H parameter in the float package after two days of dealing with latex figures... I need a break
-
big project at uni
group of 4
collectively decide to use LaTeX to write the documentation (like 50 pages or so)
me and one team memeber (bob) had TeX experience, and decided to write a cheat sheet for the others
bob says he'll make it
fast forward a few days
bob commits and pushes a docx file called "LaTeX Cheat Sheet.docx"

Recommendations for customizing vim & i3 for programming workflow?
Do you have any settings/plugins you prefer?
Also, any nice ideas for compiling latex docs while writing it in vim? Like a side by side thing maybe, not really looking for ide.6 -
!dev
Come on, Office. First you throw me out because my "cached credentials are expired" and disable saving. Sigh. OK, let's re-login. Now you show me neverending "Loading..." Instead of a login mask.
Ugh...
May I work on my document? PLEASE?
EDIT: I'm an idiot. Saving locally works. -
Why is it so fucking impossible to install SINGLE packages for texlive on ubuntu when my windows (miktex) can do that on its own?!?!
tried different solutions (e.g. tlmgr), nothing works reliably, I'm just texlive-fulling now, urgh.4 -
I've been using Bear which is a markdown editor with iOS and mac support. While markdown is good, I've found myself needing to use LateX for equations in my notes (doing math / theory stuff). I switched to a VS Code extension which is markdown + MathJAX. How do you guys take notes?2

Because writing code in latex is ugly, had to make a website to auto generate styled code for me:

Here’s a preview of a piece of code, in pdf, not an image18 -
Spent 4 days fixing ‚bugs‘ in the PhD thesis of my wife. While LaTeX worked great this APA citation style should die ASAP.5

While fucking my hot blonde gf this morning the Fucking DUREX condom BROKE and i creampied her. Here are the reasons why its not my fault:
1--Im not retarded
- 4 years of fcking my hot blonde gf with no protection and nothing ever happened cos im !retarded. Its a bigger risk to fuck with condom than without, how is this fucking normal???
2--I use condom the right way
- i was holding the tip so air comes out, just like it was explained on the box, but while rolling it down i was still holding the tip to make sure the air doesnt come back up
3--She was wet
- she wasnt dry. My hot blonde gfs pussy was so wet from how horny she was so its impossible that it got torn due to dryness
4--First verification
- it wasnt torn or ripped. It was normal. Everything looked absolutely fine
5--Second verification
- when i put it inside my hot blonde gf and fk her i pull it out in the first 10 seconds just to make sure it isnt torn--it was good and nothing was ripped so i slowly put it back inside
6--Condom is not thin
- i took the regular durex one (fuck this fucking dead fraud company I'll piss and shit on their grave) so it wasnt the thin bullshit one
7--Dont got a big black dick
- its normal. Average. Not small nor big. So latex elasticity isn't my problem
8--50-50%
- every FUcking time when i fked my hot blonde gf with a condom i always stressed if it'll break or not. This is not the first time it broke. FUCK the product that is THIS MUCH unreliable, unsafe and fragile! I'll fuck the whole durex company up. Im not the only one who had this problem. DUREX IS THE BIGGEST OVERRATED SCAM COMPANY SPENDING BILLIONS ON MARKETING FOR A LOW QUALITY SHIT PRODUCT THAT DOESNT EVEN WORK
9--Package didnt expire
- i bought a new box in the store on 8th march for womens day (modern women value having gifted with condoms more than flowers). It wasnt bought in a shit china quality shop. I fked her in the car at night and also creampied her but the condom did NOT break. Then i fked her this morning in bed with condom from the SAME BOX, and now it DID break. Are you Fucking kidding me???
10--Emergency contraception
- i died from high adrenaline of running so fast to the store to buy her contraception. Had to run to 4 fucking stores cause all of them don't work before 7:30am. Finally found one in the 4th store and she drank Escapelle within 20 minutes of incident, as soon as it was physically possible
11--And now what
- now what. What do i do. I did everything i could. Nothing is my fault. My hot blonde gf wanted me to creampied her it was her idea so shes at fault partially. She will get tested in 15 days while this contraception lasts. Dont know what else to try. This bullshit never happened before21 -
Seems like latex does not like recursion. Defined a command as itseld by accident and got lots of strange error. Will there be a time where i can accept that copy-pasting code only generates problem?

You know what I think they should extend chatgpt to do ? Output some of it's results in math latex or circuit diagrams in jpg or some popular xml format

After leaving my internship job to try out pre-med, getting to the end of pre-med, and studying for the MCAT for months, I am now getting married in May and looking for an apartment, so nixing the medical school idea...
Trying to get my old job back, was absolutely *lovely* to see that SCCM (the abusive father that it is, I knew how to work with him) is now getting discontinued? Man.
Might just bumrush these IT certs and see what happens. At least I know LaTeX now. -
I’ve been trying to work smarter and not harder.
I’ve been applying to internships with my cover letter and resume.
My cover letter is pretty generic so I only need to change the company name and company position for each application.
Used to do this all manually through google docs but I just wrote a cool script
Using bash, I ask for the company name and position, and then I just generate and compile a latex version of my cover letter with those parameters updated.
Then, the pdf of my cover letter is combined with the pdf of my resume.
After that, the pdf of my application goes into a directory in my career folder so I have a record of it.
This has saved me so much time lol I’m happy I took the time to figure this out2 -
I coded a Nibbles knock-off on QBasic in elementary school. I kept picking around the edges of coding (HTML, LaTeX, scripts for research tools like R, Praat, etc) and just recently got serious about it.
-
How do I go into tokenizing strings of text from a LaTeX file into a Go structure for further processing? I feel like splitting hair trying for loop over an io.Reader and using regexp to find where a sentence ends; there must be a better way...2
-
Markdown is useful for a quick note, AsciiDoc is useful if you want to go a bit deeper into customization and features.
But I find myself reaching for (Xe)LaTeX quite often once the document I'm trying to compose requires even a little custom content. Am I alone in this? What's your favourite go-to for quickly setting up not-so-standard documents?5 -
I think my favourite one is Notepad++ I like things raw and out of distractions... Maybe because I write a lot of LaTeX and it feels like heaven...
-
After about two days of trying to crack LaTeX, I'm starting to think it was made for masochists, not programmers...why on earth would any sane mind come up with such a gooseshit???2
