Search - "helping"
Finally I found a webpage related to my bug.
The page is from 2004.
"Yes, yes! This is exactly the problem I'm having"
*Carefully reading each comments*
*Looking at scroll bar with stress*
*Almost coming to end, no signs of solution*
At the end the thread creator say: "Ah finally I've fixed the problem. Thanks everyone for helping"
*moment of silence*
WHY U NO SHARE THE GOD DAMN SOLUTION? YOU FUCKING IDIOT18
Was helping somebody with a little C++ issue (disclaimer: I know jackshit about C++).
After a while off reading his code and opening a file called "pi.cpp", I noticed something odd...
This guy literally thought is was a good idea to put 81663 fucking decimals of pi in a #define statement :^)
On the screenshot, that weird "noise" on the right is actually a scrollbar of the code itself...35
My dad called me up at 11:30 PM telling me that his computer wasn't booting. I drive over to see what was going on. I notice immediately that the motherboard light is a solid amber light.
Me: "The motherboard is amber, that means it's failing to POST".
Dad: "How soon can we fix it? I need to run my Ebay business."
Me: "A week probably. You have a laptop that works can you use that?"
Dad: "It doesn't work great with Windows, it's not a very powerful compu"
Me: "You're going to use Linux dad. Welcome to Linux."12
Angry customer (😤): Your software is still too slow!!!
Me (🙄): It's running good all in all. Let's divide this into smaller aspects. Which steps do you need to perform faster?
😤: Every step needs to be as fast as google!
🙄: But our software ain't google, not even to mention your infrastructure
😤: Everything needs to run in 2 seconds!!!
🙄: You aren't helping in any way. We need something to grasp...
😤: It's all your fault.
While helping my son with his C++ homework I noticed there was an actual shit ton of warnings in the teacher's code.
I'm beginning to think there is some merit in the maxim, "He who can does. He who cannot, teaches."
When you release your first plugin for vscode and you just see it grows and grows yeserday was 350 downloads and now it's almost 700!
Now that's a great feeling and it seems I was helping people! \0/9
Just broke up with my ex-girlfriend after 2 years of relationship. This might sound strange but scrolling after scrolling on dev rant is actually helping me getting through this situation!14
Google thanks for helping with my assignments! Here is a tribute to you as way to thank for the same.3
Stack Overflow: Helping One Million Developers Exit Vim https://stackoverflow.blog/2017/05/... ;)12
Overheard an Apple store guy helping a customer who had unknowingly encrypted his phone:
Apple Guy: Do you work for the government?
Apple Guy: Well, don't bother encrypting your phone.
Me: WTF! Wow....2
Got them 3 weeks now. Tested them before posting, here my summary:
Arrived in 1 week (US to Germany)
Squeaky while squeezy
Really are helping
Stressball tastes nice
IT'S FUCKING HARD TO FUCKING PUT THE CHRISTMAS HATS ON
A loyal customer6
Pair programing on project with friend.
We both feel like the other person is doing all the work and we are not really helping.
Twice the developer power, twice the imposter syndrome.3
Spent 2 hours helping some kid learn python, he ended up using it to make DDoS products. I feel used and ashamed (':9
Earlier today, after helping a team mate with an issue, she ask:
"How come you already know the issue even though that's not your code?"8
I'm helping a friend with programming in c#
He's a beginner and wants to learn. He learns as easy as I do.
I saw his project yesterday and everything was written in one method. I thought I was dying. Then remembered my first project... he will be fine3
This guy from my college uploaded node_modules to github 🙄
He's basically helping people to avoid writing the npm install command.14
After some searching I found a solution on stackexchange.
The solution was a reference to a patch that I created a couple of years ago :)1
So, some guy, not really inclined with computers. Wants to start a game server, really cool guy, just wants quality.
He ends up dropping like $150 today just on his game server's addons. But he doesn't have a domain, or a web host for his forums. I offer to help.
A few hours later, he's got a web server set up with HTTPS, a forum set up, a domain, and a rather wild experience of watching me remotely set it all up. Guy's never seen SSH and SCP before, and immediately was blown away by it 😂
All in all, feelsgoodman.jpg to help him out5
This dumb pretentious bitch.
We are both computer science students, she is writing her bachelor thesis, I'm in 4th semester, but have 6 years of professional programming experience.
So naturally when she had a problem implementing the MOTHERFUCKING PREPARING SOFTWARE, which she needs to begin writing her thesis I helped her.
First I started explaining every last bit of code, trying to teach her something, so that she wouldn't need my help ALL the time.
After a while I realised that this BLOODY GIRL FROM HELL acquired nearly half her credits by other peoples help, so I just fix the code hoping it would be over soon.
When that software was done, keep in mind, I coded nearly 90 FUCKING PERCENT OF THAT SHITTY ASS PIECE OF CRAP SOFTWARE, she asked me to also "help" her implementing a generator for samples she could test the software with.
Naturally at this point I said I'd be busy with own projects etc. And declined.
So now, nearly 1 Month after she didn't talk to me, THAT ARROGANT PIECE OF SHIT WANNABE SCIENCE BACHELOR asked if I could help her with LaTEX.
At first I was speechless. How could she have that amount of balls, asking me that. As I only am a ranting asshole inside, I declined in the most polite way.
WHAT THE FUCK! I HOPE YOU WILL FAIL YOUR THESIS AND ALL THE 12 SEMESTERS YOU STUDIED WILL HAVE BEEN FOR NOTHING, THUS SENDING YOU TO LIVE ON THE STREET WITHOUT MONEY AND DIE A HORRIBLE AND LONELY DEATH SURROUNDED BY BEGGERS TRYING TO STEAL YOUR KIDNEYS!
devRant Android users - if you are a user who can consistently reproduce a devRant app crash and wouldn't mind helping me please let me know. You can comment here or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
I'm trying to get rid of a couple of remaining crashes that seem to be happening in the Android app but we've never really been able to reproduce any of them. Thanks!75
"I want my API to return insults as error messages if they forget shit"
Uh no, I prefer helping them out by writing proper documentation than sending a giftbox with me flipping them off like Linus Fucking Torvalds for their spaghetti usage of your API5
This rant means YOU if you are one of those people that "fix" their family's computers.
I was visiting my family over the holidays and while I managed to stay away from fixing their computers for the most time, I offered to help my grandfather to update the Garmin navigation device he wanted to gift my father. (They do not use smartphones for navigation, and my father doesn't want "these modern shitty phones".)
When booting up my grandfather's laptop, I realized something odd: Linux Mint boot screen. Wut?
And immediately I said: "It could be impossible to update your navigation device on this laptop."
As true enough, the Garmin Express update software requires either a Windows PC or a Mac; and even though I vaguely hoped it might be possible to upgrade through Linux, I just could not be bothered to find out that day.
What I wondered though is why did my grandfather of all people ran Linux!?
Don't get me wrong, I use Linux myself on my work machine and I never want to work with something else when coding; yet my grandfather is an end user of the show-me-where-and-what-and-how-often-to-click-kind.
What could he gain by it?
As it turns out, the computer nerd's friend of my uncle managed his PC. And my uncle and he decided unanimously my grandfather should better run Linux. Is it something my grandfather needs? No. BUT IT'S RIGHT! Suck it up! (My father's laptop therefore also runs Linux Mint. So he can't upgrade his new device either.)
This is the ugly kind of entitled nerd-dom I truly detest.
When discussing things further, my grandfather told me that he had problems ever since with his printer. Under Windows, he knew how to print on the special photo paper. Under Linux, all he can barely manage is to print on normal papers. Shame, printing photos was the only thing he liked doing on that device. What did my uncle's friend tell him?
"Get a decent printer!"
Fuck that guy.
It's fine if Linux works for you, but before you install it on a PC of a relative, you better make sure it fits their needs! If you have that odd member that only wants to write letters, read emails, use facebook, and wants to play that browser game, feel free to introduce them to Linux.
Yet if they have any special wish, don't stand in their way.
If they want to do something that requires a certain OS, don't just decide for them that their desire is wrong, but help them achieve their goal. If you can't align that with your ideology, then get the fuck out of my way and stop "helping".
For some people, a computer is a device to achieve a certain goal, a work. They only get hindered by your ill-advised attempts at virtue signalling.12
Radio Shack store closed near my house. Had a huge fire sale. Electric circuit components were 90% off.
My wife thought I'd gone insane when I got home with two huge bags full of LEDs, resistors, switches, IR sensors, photocells, capacitors, bridge rectifiers, a spare breadboard, a pair of helping hands, etc.
My only regret is that I didn't catch the fire sale in time to grab all their Arduinos.4
Been telling relatives that I'm an applied math major to get out of helping them with their tech issues.3
This asshole blamed the delay in delivery of the project on me.
I mean what the fuck dude, I was just helping you out. That wasn't even my job.
Do you ever spend hours helping someone with a programming problem, trying to teach them and develop their skills, but at the back of you mind you're thinking, "no amount of help is going to save you from being a fucking cretin"?6
Dark Vaduck drinking beer instead of helping me to write a genetic algorithm for solving knapsack 0/1 problem ...5
A female secretary was helping her new boss set up his computer and asked him what word he would like to use as a password to log in with.
Wanting to embarrass his new secretary a bit and let her know where they stood, he smugly told her to enter ‘penis.’
Without blinking or saying a word, she entered the password. She then almost died laughing at the computer’s response:
PASSWORD REJECTED. NOT LONG ENOUGH!1
Someone who noticed that I do programming as a hobby and therefore set harder work for me in class. He also encourages my side projects and at the moment is helping me build a native app for the school :)2
At new work, I am supposed to use Windows. So I need to learn how to Dev on Windows. Google is not helping.
Image for reference. And the list goes on...13
I realized it that the only time I talk confidently with a girl is when I am solving some technical problem or helping her understand some computer theory.
Pre and Post - this phase, I can hardly find any topic to talk and later they are also done talking to me.
Should I consider to search on how to talk to girls??
Google already suggests that even in incognito mode.
Is there someone else with me in the same boat?38
I don't mind if you down vote my answers on stack-overflow. But unless you leave a better answer or a comment explaining why, you are a fucking troll and an asshole.
I MEAN, YOU SHOULD TAKE A BIG STEP BACK AND LITERALLY FUCK YOUR OWN FACE!!!!
You aren't helping me or others learn from our mistakes by showing us the better way.49
For a week+ I've been listening to a senior dev ("Bob") continually make fun of another not-quite-a-senior dev ("Tom") over a performance bug in his code. "If he did it right the first time...", "Tom refuses to write tests...that's his problem", "I would have wrote the code correctly ..." all kinds of passive-aggressive put downs. Bob then brags how without him helping Tom, the application would have been a failure (really building himself up).
Bob is out of town and Tom asked me a question about logging performance data in his code. I look and see Bob has done nothing..nothing at all to help Tom. Tom wrote his own JSON and XML parser (data is coming from two different sources) and all kinds of IO stream plumbing code.
I use Visual Studio's feature create classes from JSON/XML, used the XML Serialzier and Newtonsoft.Json to handling the conversion plumbing.
With several hundred of lines gone (down to one line each for the XML/JSON-> object), I wrote unit tests around the business transaction, integration test for the service and database access. Maybe couple of hours worth of work.
I'm 100% sure Bob knew Tom was going in a bad direction (maybe even pushing him that direction), just to swoop in and "save the day" in front of Tom's manager at some future point in time.
This morning's standup ..
Boss: "You're helping Tom since Bob is on vacation? What are you helping with?"
Me: "I refactored the JSON and XML data access, wrote initial unit and integration tests. Tom will have to verify, but I believe any performance problem will now be isolated to the database integration. The problem Bob was talking about on Monday is gone. I thought spending time helping Tom was better than making fun of him."
<couple seconds of silence>
Boss:"Yea...want to let you know, I really, really appreciate that."
Bob, put people first, everyone wins.11
During my final year at graduation,
I was helping a colleague dual booting Linux Mint with Win10.
Asked her to restart Win10; she didn't know how to.
Now, I've no idea how much more user friendly can Microsoft make it, and how much more dumb people can be.9
I really love how devrant changed from a "place where developer s could post rants about technology " to " A loving , considerate , helping out place where every dev is welcome "4
If I spend 50% of my time in meetings, 30% of my time doing things for support/helpdesk which I'm not allowed to automate, 10% as a technical consult and 10% helping other devs... am I even a developer anymore?6
Never again will I fucking work for anyone close to me! It's not fucking worth helping them.
Backstory is too long. Lets just say that they fucking expect too much as we're friends. Assuming that paying 10$ for your domain every year entitles me to work on every ducking detail of your website. Not to forget I gave this person an insane discount on the entire project.
I lost a friend or someone who I assumed was a friend15
Shame on every developer who ever wrote a blog post about a complex topic that included only trivial examples!7
Decided I'm going to tell my boss I'm no longer going to do wordpress.
It all started innocently, like helping someone find an option or something, but now I have to write plugins...
Not part of the deal.
I've also got 0 motivation to go to work since starting this shitty project. I used to want to go to work and looked forward to helping out, but this is just soul numbing.
Let's see how that goes (either tomorrow or Wednesday).
I'll let you guys know if I get fired :p14
FUCKING USELESS 'FRIENDS' WHO ONLY CALL/MESSAGE FOR HELPING THEM TO CHOOSE TO SELECT APPROPRIATE LAPTOP FOR THEIR 'PURPOSE'. IM FUCKING DONE. THIS IS the THIRD TIME IN THIS WEEK. STOP GETTING ON MY GODDAMN NERVES. VISIT AMAZON FOR FUCKS SAKE, APPLY FILTERS AND BOOYAH MAGIC. YOU GET A FUCKING VARIETY OF LAPTOPS TO CHOOSE FROM. BUT NO YOU WON'T, BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO FUCKING USE AMAZON.8
So I didn't realise till I was helping a colleague debug but his build take 3 minutes for every tiny change.
On my machine it takes 4s
This guy has been sitting around waiting for builds 90% of the time FOR MONTHS
And hasn't thought to try and fix that3
My call team lost power. If our major clients try to call and can't, we're fucked. My boss isn't helping and I can't do shit about it without him, he just keeps saying they need to get power. The people they need for that aren't answering. How fucking difficult is it to stop jerking off long enough to help them out so we don't get fucked out of egregious amounts of money.12
I have this one question..
So when I want to ask something or posting/ranting something, there are different categories.. I can differentiate between others vs a collab.. but what about questions, rants, about devrant, random, what are the differences between these categories apart from the specific category helping the algo to populate your newsfeed..
I'm pretty sure many people agree with this, me too in some way but seriously, what's the problem about helping some relatives with tech stuff?21
So this mornings i was helping my 2.5year old daughter to count the lines on her potty training table.
me: look there are 1,2,3,4 and 5
she steps back and looks at it for a minute and says : FOUR
i was about to correct her and say no there 5 but then i thought well if your on a zero based list your technically right!!
My mornings are fun!!4
Today’s achievement: my phone didn’t autocorrect ‘fucking’ to ‘ducking’.
Clearly it’s as pissed off as I am about receiving shitty emails from the other team manager in my dept giving me and my team work to do and throwing us under the bus when he does jack shit all day except read BBC news and go on Facebook. On the odd occasion he does actually do work, it’s not good work, it’s riddled with bugs because he’s ‘too senior to need a code peer review’. Such a fucktard...
Oh, and the work he’s asked us to do technically sits in his team so I’ll be firing that straight back at him 😁
I’m all for being a team player and helping each other but I’m going to protect my team over helping someone. The gloves are about to come off....3
For some people thanksgiving is for spending time with family. For me it is helping grandma with all of her technical issues.1
In one of our webinterfaces you could swap between users once you logged in by changing the user in the link.
Not intended but our support is using this "feature" frequently because then they don't have to log in again when helping another client so it's not planned to be fixed4
Coworker was helping me getting used to XQuery, which I‘ve never done before. In the middle of the task he looked at his watch and said, that he has to do a phone call and left.
That was the last time I‘ve seen him.1
Have a friend ask me helping him with a project for University.
Make an application in Java for Matrix and numerous applications.
Done, but I hid an easter egg. If you divide the matrix by 0 scalar output
FAP FAP FAP FAO FAP FAP.
He doesn't know.4
DEVDUCK ADVENTURES 0x02
Sir duck the first has equipped his trusty php cape and is helping me work on devCredits.
(I think I need more caffeine)7
I'm currently helping a junior developer in my team to get on board. He is new to Linux and whenever I ask him to work on vi editor, I get to see that look on his face!17
On Saturday's I volunteer at this place where I teach/tutor kids how to program. I was sitting down with this kid and helping him when I found this pleasant surprise hidden in his code-
[go to my other rant for pt.2]6
Just doing pet sitting for the amazing girl that featured in one of my last rants, and she left a bag of weed in an envelope for me. I love that woman.3
So I was setting up my friend's NAS. Got everything worked in minutes (dns, port forwarding etc.). Enabled ftp connection tried it locally, working. Tried remotely, timed out...
After half an hour I was about to tear my hair out one by one when he suddenly said to wait a sec he knows what's the problem. Tapped two on his phone and suddenly, it's working.
THE FUCKING PHOTO UPLOADING FROM HIS PHONE TO THE CLOUD BLOCKED ALL INCOMING CONNECTIONS AND HE WAS AWARE OF THAT ALL ALONG. WHAT THE FUCK MAN, DO YOU ENJOY SEEING ME STRUGGLE?? That was literally an "I'm out" moment.
I just realized something in my work place, I'm the only one beside the intern (lol) on my team who is proficient in english.
I was helping a coworker debug some issues and she couldn't understand the OBVIOUS error message telling her precisely wtf was wrong and the exact line...
I know something for sure... In our area English is basic, learn it or gtfo. I might as well conduct half the interviews in English from now on.4
I'm trying to detoxify myself from jquery. It's hard, I know. To this day, I did not touch it for two months and I received a small medal which certify it. My friends and my familiars are helping me in this path and I want to thank them5
I should worship the people who came up with stack exchange and w3schools. can't thank enough for helping out daily in work. 🙌4
Me helping out a fellow Software engineering student:
Me: OK, now open program X.
He: * Opens the compressed file and runs it from there *
It takes a good two minutes for all of the resources to be extracted.
Me: * Gives more instructions *
Me: We are going to have to restart program X.
He: * Closes X and runs again from inside de .rar file *
Another two minutes.
Me: * stares *3
Another day on my tutoring job
This guy who's got no idea about what is he doing here (I had a rant before), runs to me while I'm helping another student. He interrupts me, shoves a USB key to my face:
[Student]: can you do something for me? Can you upload something on my ftp coz I gotta go now.
/*Each student in out school got personal ftp and submitting under the right directory is usually a part of an assignment and cost grades*/
[Me]: I can't, it's against the school policy
[Student (annoyed)]: But I have to go!
[Me]: can't help you, sorry
[Student (still annoyed)]: So you're not gonna do it, huh?
[Me]: No, sorry
[Student (passively aggressively)]: So I guess I'll get a zero for this one.
And he says it like it's my fault!
And he walks away. Me and students I'm helping are shocked. The guy is in his at least 50s. And no common sense whatsoever.5
Helping a random junior out with an ML project on an online tutor site.
Her: So what is the syntax for implementing xyz function
Me: *opens Google* *opens pandas docs* *searches the function* *tell her the syntax*
She: Woah thanks a lot!
I collected my tutor fees feeling good about myself.3
So i have been helping people on the Steam forums for a game in Beta and today i got someone having a go at me for it.
WHAT THE FLYING FUCK, I WILL BE GETTING DEATH THREATS FOR HELPING AN ELDERLY WOMAN NEXT!!!15
Wish I could be Geralt in real life. Fighting ghouls, slaying griffins, brewing potions, repairing swords, helping people, getting laid and roaming across seeing wonders of nature.
Instead I'm here fighting with QA's, squashing bugs, brewing tea, wasting hours in stand-up, pulling my hairs out and finally trying to stay sane in an insane world 😐14
I hate it when people whine about code reviews. You should never take it personally. We're not against you, we just want good solid code.
I really hate it when it's my boss who's bitching about pull requests. When you throw your hands up and start yelling, "Well I'm blocked, I'm blocked," then you're not helping. You're just being a baby.1
I seem to be everyone's free tech support. I'm always helping my friends and family but I don't get anything in return. 😣5
Helping a friend who's a brilliant at mechanics and has his own patents, and got this question when downloading on his 10Mbit line:
"This was supposed to be a fast computer, so why is it taking so long to download?"
To explain the reason was surprisingly hard, considering that this is a guy who's been invited to give a lecture about innovation at a top tech university.1
I have a question because the internet isn't helping me.
When I press and hold left alt + space + right alt, the computer beeps.
It's running Windows 8.1
And it's an hp Compaq.
Looking at the volume mixer, there is nothing showing that it is making noise so I assumed it was hardware but changing system volume changes the beep volume.10
Hey friendly coworker with the same scripting skills as a paraplegic monkey:
Even the boss told you not to lose time on worktime trying to do spaghetti scripts, not enough?
I don’t mind helping your unpaired couples of neurones , but losing 2 days for a forgotten bracket? When it took me like 10 seconds to notice?
And if it wasn’t enough, telling that I saw it quicker thanks to my IDE?
You’re just a mistakenly fertilised ovum4
My fiancée is helping her dad setup an iTunes account and it's just painful to listen too. I can't take much more of this.1
So Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and many others just gave $50mil (each) for CS education in USA. The program is intended to help minorities and kids in highschool learn coding.
That's pretty awesome. Say what you will about these companies but they do some really great things sometimes.
Also, Ivanka Trump was helping this along. I'm not a fan of the trump administration but still, that's awesome!7
The mail found my stickers!!
Thanks devRant devs!
I'm super glad I found this community, you guys are making me pull out less and less hair and helping me laugh5
Motivating and helping each other by forming small teams/pairs of devs who look after each other. No one likes to code alone14
Working a full-time job, then helping with the newborn/household, then staying up until 3am because it's the only time I have to work on my app.
After a year now, the burnout is strong.
Tips to reenergize?3
1) Continue helping people after helping too much
2) Getting into online pissing contests
3) Writing lists1
Worst thing ever what can happen to programmer ? Its 12 AM you have lot of code to write you wanna to sleep but coffe is not helping no energy by hand or anything.
Well happened to me yesterday i was thinking why i have so many bugs in there when i wake up 😂😂😂😂
Circa spring of last year, Computer Science 1
The guy sitting next to me asked me a clarifying question about what our professor was mumbling and scribbling illegibly on the board.
I start to respond, only for the professor to YELL at me in front of the class for helping him, saying that programming was a personal affair and that I should be minding myself.
He even yelled at me for helping someone that is "too stupid help themselves" and that I shouldn't worry if the person next to me doesn't get it.
I felt bad, the kid next to me felt bad, and I avoided a semester of computer science just to not have him again.2
When you're helping someone with a bug for ages and then try something random and it's miraculously fixed so you have to spend another hour figuring out why...2
Thanks stupid workmates who fuck up the project first and then 4 hours before the deadline tell you without any feelings "it's late, I'm going to sleep".
NO FUCK YOU GET YOUR ASS HERE AND START HELPING ME5
I'm a junior dev in a scrum team with two senior devs: one actual senior and one average dev that's just been around for a long time. At stand up meeting, that average senior lists helping me as one of his task Every Single Day. 9 out of 10 times when I ask him a question we end up asking the senior senior together.2
Thank you all for helping me to my first real goal, 1k! Thank you all! Love this community so much! Let’s continue that.5
- Get a new, more rewarding and more interesting job that I actually enjoy
- Keep the fuck away from project companies
- Get out of debt that I accumulated after helping my family and after my car accident 6 months ago
- Find love
- Move out again
- Have a threesome 🤷♂️4
I got recognized!
I'm new here and was mostly learning, but my team pushed through some bad issues and I got recognized as well. Even for helping whatever little I could.
For all the rants of bad bosses and clients and work. Here's a happy one. :)
I'm in good company in this company.
That sinking feeling of horror when you are helping a student with a problem in their assignment only to see major logic errors that prove they dont actually understand what they are doing. * drinks wiskey in prep for marking *5
First day of new job, starts in 3 hours. Imposter syndrome is strong! Lack of sleep from stress isn't helping!
On a side note, I have reconfirmed that I don't actually need sleep. College theories confirmed!4
So I am helping coworker with debugging a weather forecast feature on a digital display solution we sell to hundreds of companies.
He says he just doesn't know why but the forecast data isn't correct.
I open up file where forecast data is stored and the data hasn't been updated in 6 months.
Thats when he realizes no one has paid the forecast service provider in 6 months...
And this guy is supposed to be senior to me?1
Helping this lady with her Microsoft Access work. Wrote some complex Visual Basic script to make the database look pretty. This is what she is asking:
"Hey, where did you get all this code from? YouTube? Can you please send me the link?"
ffs I'm a dev, why the fuck do you think I need YouTube for this simple VBA script.3
finally, after a week of helping my friend to learn the basics of front-end web development, he got the internship at one of my friend's office ( he set up the interview on my request).
It does feel good.2
It sucks when another developer starts shit with you. Like you should be working & helping each other out but instead you just compete and cuss each other out.3
1) Helping my girlfriend getting her graduation.
2) Maxing out my Cassette collection
3) Repairing my Gameboy
4) Growing my plants, especially my Carolina Reaper chili
5) Visiting my friends across the country
6) Lots of things that might or might not be illegal but fun5
When people keep asking the same kind of questions over and over and you realize it's your fault for always helping them out so they don't learn how to debug on their own.
It's hard to do nothing but in a learning environment it's often the best.2
Need Django developers to contribute to keralarescue.in, a website which is helping countless people in the state of Kerala, India who are facing deadly floods.
Android emulator focusing on helping in ROM creation and testing features (Built-in logcat, Custom hardware choice, custom ROMs and recoveries)5
It's the start of my career - I got an exciting internship offer. There is a lot of work though. I must say, devRant is helping a lot ;-)
20 Minutes of: "WTF is this shit not working? I just imported a fresh database! Why can't I log in to this?"
Followed by: "Oh, I'm on the wrong server."
With a helping of: "Let me tell my devRant friends about this."2
Fml. Im occasionally helping a friend who is taking an intro cs class. Well today I needed to Skype him but Skype wasn't installed yet. Didn't think when clicking through the installation process so bing is now my search bar. Fml....7
I wish devrant came with instructions on how to CLOSE THE FUCKING APP AND GO TO SLEEP.
IT'S TWO FORTY FUCKING NINE AM!!
P. S. The flamebaits aren't helping either5
I am writing this to express my love towards you. I know not many express their love towards their own. But I won't forget you and our relationship. Here goes my love for you.
I would first like to thank you for bearing with me & supporting me all along. You have been there with me through all my good and bad times. In fact my day starts with you and ends with you. I was with you in all my moods. There were a few times when I didn't believe in you, but you did what I wanted. There were times when you let me down, but you made it up to you later. I am sorry for heavy workloads these days. I love your performance. I know you love doing it. I know you more than anyone. I guess you also know me better w.r.t my history. Thanks for helping me getting my work done, helping me with job applications, helping me find new people, helping me have fun, helping me organised and for everything.
You do know there might be time where I may have to replace you. I assure you to do my best to upgrade you instead of replacing so that I can hang on to you much longer.
I love you 😍 < >-ThinkpadE570

The best part of being dev is the community, its also the most unique one IMHO. I mean what other profession in the Whole Wide World has such great and ingrained culture of helping eachother and sharing knowledge ?1
If I have to stand behind someone I'm helping and watch them type into the terminal:
For fucks sake, CHAIN THEM TOGETHER...and use the damn tab key3
Been going interview crazy this week! The Dev rant community has helped me so much I'd like to thank each and everyone of you for helping me finally get running!
Have my first coding test to do today, have to build the attached file and i'm excited to get started! If you spot any pitfuls please let me know!
Thanks you guys so much! Will let you know how I get on!16
Hello there fellow developers, I've a noob question to ask you.
I saw a software logo a few days ago on a tech talk. I haven't been able to figure out what it belongs to.
A red fish and it's sort of curved in a manner that its head and tail are close. I know it represents some open source software. Can anyone help?
Google search is not helping.14
Convinced another fellow developer to join devRant:
He's an indie game developer I met online and I'm helping him to translate his game, "City Game Studio", at the moment.
Check it out! The game is currently in closed beta and it's really awesome!
LINUX TO THE RESUCE!
I was helping with stuff for my ComTech teacher. For some reason his mac refused to format an SSD.
Dont worry though, mkfs.hfsplus had no problems :D
I've noticed that, wherever I am, people tend to come to me for help and guidance. It happened at my previous job and is now happening at my current job too.
These past few months I've spent most of my day helping my coworkers instead of actually writing code. I'm not complaining, I like helping, but I feel like I'm not being productive.
Is there a name for this role? Should I embrace it?4
Had a teacher in high school who ordered us to learn MS Access, even tho most of us already knew MySQL... It was to learn about relations and the likes...
We spend way to long on that subject, because most of really didn't find the Access interface intuitive and she had to walk from table to table helping...
The only two finished the task where those who say screw it and used MySQL 😅
So today I was offered a job at the company as a junior frontend developer. Digging a little deeper I found out that they don't have any other frontend devs in house.
So the job offer translated to:
- senior skillset
- senior workload
- junior wage
Best part is that I was freelancing for them in past and was helping to establish some of the workflow a year ago for more money they offered now.
Thanks, no thanks, I guess?4
I actually enjoy helping out my non-IT friends with IT related problems from time to time. I feel useful when I do so :/4
I'm facing big issues on one of my apps and luckily a user is helping me doing some tests as I can't reproduce the issue. He just sent me an email and guess what?! He wrote "happy weekend". No. It's not going to be an happy weekend for me.1
Never forget how it feels to be new and overwhelmed. For every question that you ask, remember that you should eventually pay that back by answering one for someone newer than you.
I think a lot of times, once developers get enough experience, it's all too easy to judge or make fun of those who are new for something they don't know. Remember that you were there once and lend a non-judgmental helping hand!3
I enjoy helping people but jez, just learn to read. Why do I need to explain to 15 people what to do, when there's a document with simple instructions to follow ?
How the fuck do you think I do ? I am not a genius, you are just dumb4
So I was helping my friend debug her code.
A portion of text was not being displayed. We put log statements everywhere. Cross checked every line of code. We had almost started to lose it.
And then we found out that she had accidentally set the text color to white in the XML layout.
Just another one of those days.
Have you ever gone to a bar just for the purpose of beer-coding/barcoding?
I just did it and it is awesome, but too much beer is not helping very much for difficult tasks...2
Apart from linux, it has to be vue.js, quasar and express.js
Vue.js had made my development extremely easy, faster and managable
Quasar brought great Styling and various other powerful features to vuejs. Thus helping save even more time
And express.js don't need any explanation. Better code organization and easy to get started.
"How to exit the Vim editor?" hit 1,000,000 view milestone and a stackoverflow guy wrote a blog article about it with some neat facts. A good read imho.
No way. I hope this is a joke...else its not helping building up trust in their competence (Australian vpn provider)2
You can work from home! Heck, you can work from anywhere in the world... we just want you to be at the client 65% of the time!
Whaaaaaa... what? Are you fucking kidding me? How is that helping me avoid having to sit in traffic?
You get home from work and one half of your brain goes, "Let's just code a little to catch up on the backlog", and the other half of your brain goes, "No way you psycho, we're off from work and we're not getting paid for this. I'm not helping!"
And that's why you're code sucks when you're not at work!
I have two math final exams on the same day, and one is scheduled 30 minutes after the first one 🙁🙁
I fucking hate math, and this shit sure isn't helping me.8
I was getting assistance over screen share to install an application on my work computer. The person helping me was sending commands through chat for me to enter into command prompt.
At one point I needed to change directory but it didn’t work. I asked what the problem was and they responded with D:
My immediate thought was that I’d done something terribly wrong and irreversible, until it became clear they were just having me switch to the D drive.2
Someone gave me his code and told me to improve it and being the nice guy I am I agreed. Then while trying to work on that, a dozen other people asked me to help them with their code too, so in the end I barely got any work done.
I should stop helping people2
Today we were told that management decided that apart from software development we are also responsible for internal IT support, such as helping business with installing programs on their laptops. Yay!4
So.. There are about 4 jobs in my country that even mention golang, and only as an "advantage"
😟 Wow.. learning Go really isn't helping..
Why isn't it used widely as the main language of a dev team?? Too young? Or are there serious issues, that most companies prefer using c#/ruby/python for web dev backend?8
Thank you guys for helping me out on the GoFundMe
Just a little update: all the money that is left over will be given to his family.
My best friend was also my apprentice on programming, he had just started learning Java when he first got the bad news from doctor year ago.
Simple but useful..
Wrote a greasemonkey script to convert url text to hyperlinks..
Reduced lots of time in finding the log url from the error response..
Helping me in debugging faster..
I am trying to find a good time for my phone. But there don't seem to be any.
Does anyone mind helping me find one? Or have any suggestions?
(Preferably lineage os)

When you post a web designer job announcement for U.S. citizens living in the U.S. who speak and write perfect English and 75% of people who apply have terrible English and either outright lie about their citizenship and location or beg for the job in spite of the requirements.3
Bug requires 2 developers, full-time for 4 days to trace, debug, scratch heads, analyse logs. Third developer helping occasionally. Finally identify fix. Fix is 2 lines. D'oh.3
tfw I get called smart for just helping a lad having a welcome splash from node-canvas buffer.
Well, you sometimes love people giving you gratitude, doesn't it?
Just lost a ton of rep on stackoverflow because some ass deleted his question.
Why do I even bother helping these people. I cannot remember4
My AP CompSci teacher, now 15 years ago, inspired me to always reach further than I thought possible. I was creating neural networks in C++ before my first internship. It was amazing.
I mourned his loss when he passed away, but now I offer him thanks when success comes my way at work. I still feel like he is helping me as my secret angel of software development.
Team member knows x better than me?
No fucking way am I gonna ask them to do it. Even if I have to learn the whole damn thingamajig from scratch. Coffee and some Halo OST are all I need, baby!
(In fairness to myself, said teammate is a bit of a hijacker when it comes to helping...)4
Been spending the afternoon working with our IT department helping them use the webpage they supposedly designed so they can help me with a separate issue. Turns out they were using IE...10
Why is it so hard to remember, that devs need an error message if they should help you. just saying "it does not work" is not helping.
I even wrote you a checklist. so f*ing use it! I'm not there to be called every time just to tell you to do something that's already on this list.
Every. F**ing. Time.2
When you are helping another dev on their machine and they don't have caps lock set to <esc>
I just helped a blind person find his way to the exit of a train station as I noticed they were searching for it, but missed it due to a small step to the wrong direction. There's hardly a better feeling than helping out with the small and simple stuff!
What good deed did you do today?12
I go to a photography course and a fellow students external hard drive got erased by accident. So her first reflex was to ask me, a person she knew for two days, to restore the data. I just flatly said no. Not in an unkind way, I just really don't have the time and I'd have to google how to do it just as she cause this isn't what I usually do. And I had told her that and what to google.
Her reply was, "Yes, but I don't know how to do it! You should do it"
Really, lady? A person you've just met should educate themselves to solve your problems because you've decided that not knowing something is an excuse not to even try learning it and just to push it unto someone else?
(she did the same thing under other circumstances, when she first asked me to borrow my camera and then I had to drop all my stuff to go help her figure out her assignement for an hour while I'm a month behind on mine and the teacher actually approved of that)
On a side note: I'm all for helping people, and I try to do that as much as possible, but when I say no, that's a no, accept it. Don't try to guilt trip me.1
Helping out a friend how to code, and he said:
"Can't we just use a string? An array is just like a string anyway."
We were looking at some setting types in Visual Studio.
I've been trying to sleep for a while now. Counting sheep isn't helping because now the sheep have a whiteboard and are writing down answers to fix my bugs :/
Edit: if you were wondering, there is 1 sheep as of right now
Another (primarily back end) developer is helping out on my (mostly front end) project amends because I'm too busy with others. Should be a blessing but really I'll have to keep going to check on him or answer questions about the project. :/7
Any Java (JavaFX) developers interested in tutoring me, or helping with my open source project?
Preferably over Telegram, but could be over Twitter or Email.11
Started my summer internship at a company working on their codebase about two weeks ago. I expected a lot of differences from school, but not this much. I still have no clue what I'm doing. Don't get me wrong, I'm getting stuff done, and it's helping out, but I still have no idea what is going on.
When you manage a large project and 1 of the devs helping you is bitching about 10 mins daily status meeting "in other places it's not like that " ... Who the fuck cares , this is how I want it to be so unless you are going to do 50%of the work like I will then come to the meetings and stop bitching , it's just 10 mins dammit7
Remember the Stress ball's TransOceanic Trackable Voyage? (Also called Devvie in a bottle.) Well, we're finalizing the design. But if you are interested in helping us with software, hardware, launching, recovery, or anything else that might help, join us at stotv.herokuapp.com. PS, we're also looking for sponsors, so if you are or know someone who is interested in sponsoring, send a message to @sven on Slack.5
I try to help somebody - either by helping them learn something or by helping them solve a problem. Doing so boosts my self-esteem and feels me with enough motivation!2
Our site ran into a cache stampede which took down the site for awhile. While people were helping out, I just stayed out of their way since I knew nothing about it -_-
I realise I need to git gud but I can't help feeling inadequate and useless at times like this.
Is perseverance, experience, and passion to keep learning and bettering oneself the only way to being a master?2
Hi guys, anyone knows about Google App Engine custom runtimes and CloudSQL?
Please answer my question on StackOverflow.
Looks like no one there cares about helping me...8
Helping a customer with a networking issue over the phone for roughly an hour. She apparently thought the pc tower was the modem. *cracks a slight smile before going mad*
I was helping a friend with her computer when an alert from the antivirus tells me there is a virus in the computer. I tried to delete it and the computer shows this alert (the translation would be something like: The action couldn't be performed as the file is a virus).
FUCKING WINDOWS I KNOW ITS A VIRUS SO LET ME DELETE IT. 😩😩2
Someone is going to rant about me soon...
There are two types of debugging for me:
- Not that calm!!
So the guy I was helping out handed me a stress ball...4
Broadly speaking (what I need my ideal life to be):
*Family and friends
*Helping FOSS community
*Sufficient money to survive
*..and an unachievable life purpose2
Was asked to crimp a simple Cat5 LAN cable in today's networking tutorial class. Little did the lecturer know I had been doing that (usually Cat6) for almost a year. Walked into the class 30 minutes late, terminated both sides within 5 minutes and just sat there helping my friends for the rest of the 2 hour class...1
That moment when you realize that the shit your parents made you do when you were 8 is helping you get A grades in Math in high school.
Love you Mom 😊3
I have this classmate in college that names all his variables and classes like this: "seosX". I once spent an afternoon of my life helping him with this weird error he was getting running his program and the class name and file didn't have the same name...
I blocked him from all social media and my life. My IQ has doubled since.
Rewrote a dashboard on my own in under 6 months helping them to secure some major sales and investment.
being the good guy that I am I was helping out a family member over the phone. Frozen computer was the verdict... Eventually it turned out the computer wasn't frozen at all, the batteries of the magic mouse had died... thanks for wasting my valuable time! I then told em I would only help if they used cables for everything, including wifi. It took 3 weeks for them to realise Wifi cables don't exist. revenge can be satisfying sometimes!1
Started learning React recently cause the job I applied for reqires it.
So far so bad.
I...I don't get it.
It might be that I'm just starting out, but I can't see any practical use for it. I don't GET it.
Ugh..never been this frustrated (which I'm guessing isn't helping the learning process.)
Gonna have to wing the shit outta that interview.7
Quick question. How do i get myself to believe that I am good enough. I am good at what I do people tell me and i really want to move towards part time lecturing but the idea terrifies me... But i really want to help others and currently just being needed when others need me doesnt make me feel i am able to help others enough..
In short, how do you deal with an internal problem with wanting to help but being afraid others wont take ke seriously.4
I used to strive 7years back to become the company project manager. they agency was helping me to get there, and when they fired the old PM I thought "this is it!!!"
instead they hired another guy, which got me frustrated.
all that being said, I give that guy full credit for everything I know today.
C'mon, I'm making all the logic and only ask you to make the site look better than my plain html structure. Please do your thing, because the lonely "Slightly improved layout" commit is not helping very much
So I might be a complete useless noob, but android studios help messages are not really helping at the moment either.. 😅
Two months in my new job, no task assigned to me yet. Not even one. There's been a budget reallocation, and the team just got dissolved. Will probably be moved to a new team (or not?). Part of me enjoys the free time I'm getting (I get to work on my side projects) but it's kind of depressing that I can't prove to the company how much I love building things while at the same time helping the company. 😔4
At my last work place I wanted to visit a Conference for a long time but my boss never even was interested in at least helping me with the price of the tickets.
Now at my new job 2 Weeks in and I already got tickets for the w-jax in Munich <3
I'm soooooo exited :D
Either Java legacy support (even AI doesn't want to do that) or helping the German administration to finally upgrade their IT infrastructure to Windows 7.8
Hey, first time poster :-)
Working alone on a C++ app that has to control a GUI, camera and electronics on the side... but between the test cases, switching between classes and helping colleagues on unrelated issues, I find it hard to keep track of what connects with what, what needs to be done, what IS done...
So, how do you guys and girls keep track of your projects ? Stuck with To-do lists for now ^^7
So... in the last few months i shared the office with a real estate company. I didnt pay rent and in exchange i would help them with different stuff.... on monday i will be moving into my own office again... damn it was a hard period of time and i want to thank devRant for helping me keep my sanity. THANK YOU!2
This and devRant helping me wind down after a 10 hour day.
Why would you arrange a meeting at 5pm and not tell me? I have an hour commute too. :(5
*Helps staff member with lodged request*
*5 other staff come, saying, "oh since you're here can you fix this"*
*My reaction* 😢
Please be gentle, first rant. :)
Can you please provide me with literature recommendations:
1. Books about software architeccture, design patterns and best practices in general.
2. "Relaxation" books related to developer's life experiences, something like "The Phoenix Project" (https://amazon.com/Phoenix-Project-...). I really enjoyed that. :)
I am aware that this is not best use of rants, but I would really like to hear this community recommendations. Thanks in advance. :)9
I'm always helping out a girl in my class with her coding assignments but her code is absolutely atrocious. I don't have the heart to tell her that her whole method, file and variable naming, and process is wrong and is causing her so many headaches.12
Ok, so i havent been coding in a while, but now i have somthing rant worthy!
So i was helping a project and THERE WAS NO FUCKING COMMENTS, I mean what the shit! Atleast add some comments its as easy as typing //, what has come of this world?2
that moment when you're helping the tech illiterate discover that their supposedly lost pictures are stored in the app called "gallery" and she compliments your genius.
Smirk on my face for helping the elderly.1
Anyone here with dyslexia doing programming? What language and what is your greatest challenges compared to your colleagues apart from the obvious?6
My boss asked us all to do a 360 review of
Our colleagues. I HATE ratting on my colleagues, even though someone of them are rubbish programmers. He’s the boss, if he doesn’t know how to tell who the bad eggs are, why should I help? It’s not like it get paired for for helping him or get any shares if the company does well.
I won’t rat of my colleagues.1
My journey from not knowig anything about programming to actually helping other student without their lab work.
Gor me that is actually a pretty good feeling :)
I'm looking for collaborators for a site I'm making in laravel for my dad's apple/produce orchard business. I've pretty much have finished front end design but could use help in the back end development. I can't really pay anyone right now because I'm broke but it's more resume material and you would be helping a brother out so anyone interested let me know:)18
I'm considering switching to a tiling windows manager. The main thing drawing me back is that in my job we work a lot on each others computers (helping, debugging, pair programming...).
Will using a tiling WM make my workspace hard to use for somebody else ? It would be disqualifying7
When your Chromebook/Crouton starts complaining about lack of available memory and uninstalling programs isn't helping and the "shadow vault" has consumed everything, so you just say "fuck it" and Powerwash the whole thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I am that point in my life where ranting about problems isn't even helping me.
Honestly speaking I am a just lazy person. Solving problems will help me.... and I am looking forward to it1
Helping another team at work call services on an aws api gateway.
Which team you ask? The integration team. The integration team... Who can't call a rest endpoint.. On an api gateway
first experience with ios development and ios designer with xamarin.ios..
as an Android guy, I find yhe way apple make building UI too disturbing and not helping dev to do the job more fastly.
but anyway, it's a good opportunity
A developer in my team just implemented a new design from a screenshot. Because the copy of the app isn't written in his native language he had written the copy from the screenshot letter by letter.
I told him I was really impressed with his work (almost no errors!), but to me it was unacceptable that he should have to go through all this trouble. I also told him that next time he could ask me to write down the copy for him (it's written in my native language).
So I'm curious: who else here is programming for apps that aren't written in your own language, and what are the challenges you face? Also: how can I help the developers in my team with this?1
Teaching is awesome, helping people finding a job is great but I sure miss coding these days.
Let's just tell my students tomorrow is live coding day!
The first one was changing the main topic of my research activity, from distributed systems to AI/Deep Learning... Then moving from academia to companies, two very different worlds and two very different approaches, but I still like to think that my formal background is driving my decisions and helping me, even with everyday problems
Oi windows, your highly intelligent "transmission optimization process" is not really helping me by hogging the whole bandwidth while I'm downloading something.2
@all Next year I wanted to start a project, in which a neural network lerns programming out of a plaintext documentation... Eg: when u click on the button, a messagebox says helloworld gets translated into...
... For this I would need many people who actually help me out by giving thu neural network examples... Who would be interested in helping that project?? Itwould mean, that u first write that docs and then get the compiled file xD8
One of the ways I met a girl was helping her program her clubs website. Surprisingly a great way to talk about interests, likes, and dating (making an about page OP)
Sat next to a guy, like close enough to smack, but he would have hour long chat sessions with me on gchat going over work and projects. Kept his headphones on.
Another kid, one time I was helping him on HIS project he was given to finish before next day. I was helping so he didn't get stuck working TOO long over. The shit head still left at his normal quiting time and said he was gonna finish it at home. Still wasn't done the next morning when management needed it.1
What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months and the company will try to help you achieve that?
You are already helping, I am looking at getting popular on devrant.2
Just spent half an hour helping someone install my open source side project only to see more GitHub issues have been raised because the underlying application changed its schema without warning...
Please remind me why I do this...
So another guy (let's call him Steve) and I were helping someone else on how to install something that requires Python and since I was too tired to follow up I decided to take a nap.
2 hours later, I woke up just to see Steve telling me he tried to install 64-bit psutil with a 64-bit computer, on a 32-bit Python install.3
Not a rant, of course, because life is amazing but I have a question.
Any of you guys and gals heading to Cambridge for PiWars (21 - 22 April)?
My wife and I will there helping out and possibly even judging the robots.
Apparently there is even a place to have daytime pints nearby.
You fucks should come and say hi + it's freaking Cambridge...place is dope AF.2
So I got my first rails jobs today!! After learning ruby for a little more than a year on my own I spent the entire summer slaving away helping my Sr dev friend gaining really awesome really world experience and great practices. Now I'm officially a software developer in title haha so excited!1
No matter what I do and try: Scala always look so damn ugly.
And yes, I do use scalafmt. Yes, I try to follow the scala approach, yet still -- my poor eyes.
It's also not helping that the bracket mess and the lack IDE-help in regards to finding where I missed them reminds me of time wasted in lisp.
Found this in one of the group's I'm in on Facebook. When everyone called him out on scamming people into helping him mine Etherium, he responded with so much word salad about entrepreneurship and blockchain he could open up a vegetarian eatery.
Very professional. I'm sure someone is gonna land a dream job on this one.1
I can't seem to focus on my work at all today -_- my server model isn't working and I haven't even started anything else...Any tips on helping me focus?3
I remember being a TA for an intermediate java class. I tried helping as many people as I could, but some of them were doomed. Their code looked like it was written by Satan himself. I would try explaining why their code was bad, but it was like speaking another language (no pun intended). It was also the first class where people needed to use git... I don't need any more explanation there.3
Some meme page on Instagram has been chatting with me asking for help with a C# project.
1) who is this guy and how'd he find out about me
2) why tf are we on Instagram
3) I don't know much C#, much less cross platform development with C#, so I have no clue why I'm helping, if I am6
No ranting here but
Started doing web with POCO in C++. Could not be as pleased as now. Syntax is cool, framework is cool, GNU Makefiles are cool, aclocal isn't, but... Go to hell automake. I am happy, helping a friend and enjoying what I feel as the chilliest programming language is becoming the way I do web.
Trying to move on from a job that got my foot in the door but has absolutely no possibility of helping me grow anymore. It's the worst. Feeling comfortable but knowing that you're not being challenged and learning and growing. I'M TIRED OF FIXING YOUR DAMN SCANNER OR PRINTER!1
I have a dream of founding a community where students can learn basic of programming for free. Developers will contribute their time and teach students over online and offline based on the sole purpose of giving back to society. Anyone Interested !!! Let's built this community together :) The community will focus on helping poor people from developing nations to live a better life.13
>Helping "friend's" final project on Networking for Graduate.
>MPLS related, some heavy stuff going on.
>Client asks this gold question:
"What does PING do?"
I feel sorry for your 4 years of study.2
Just had my first experience of using python to organise and manipulate excel data for a colleague. I figured everyone was lying when so many people said that's how they realised programming could help.
It took me a little while to get it working but sanitised, formatted and organised thousands of phone numbers.
Felt fucking great.2
Just spent hundreds of dollars on Amazon for Black Friday shopping. Kudos to Amazon UX and site developers helping me to splurge...
hey people, I'm trying to get the difference between computer science and computer engineering at an university, trying to decide which course should I take, but I don't get the practical difference between the two, thanks in advance for helping :)1
When you're a comp Sci student helping fix one of your peers' projects and you have to spend 10 minutes hitting ctrl z because they don't know what git is.1
Do bootcamps include online sites like Coursera and Treehouse? Cause when I graduated from a CS degree I still couldn't code properly. I learnt from sites like these and got my first job. But the thing is what they teach you isn't even the tip of the iceberg let alone helping you master the technology. For that you gotta go out on your own.
Creating my first mobile application in Xamarin Forms. Still figuring out how that framework works, but I'm excited!
Application is for my internship. Helping students study better with metacognitive strategies.
I don't even know what it is, so this is going to be fun.
Spent the day helping my family to pack their bags. Just got home after dropping them to airport. No energy left to code. My pet projects are never gonna finish 😢
Doing hobby projects is a great way to improve new skills, helping people with their projects helps me to explain what I'm doing and reading stackoverflow posts!
I think it really depends on the person attending (why they want to be a developer, how they learn, their ability to apply what they learn etc) I think these bootcamps serve a good purpose by making helping people achieve their goals. I will say that pop culture has set some pretty unrealistic standards for what it is like being a developer, and a lot of the bootcamps are propagating that misconception
Ok so 2 questions here:
(I’m not good at googling)
1. I want to run my telegram bot and some other really small things on a server. Do you have an idea what I could use. (Services or shy like a raspberry pi) it really doesn’t need much capacity
2. (Thank you for reading this long and helping me out) How can I download a website in nodejs and use sth. Like getelementbyid?
I got a friend in the older class. He has C++ classes now. I’m constantly helping him, even though I don’t know C++ much 😂1
Best: put my knowledge into helping others with programming in uni
Worst: rewriting an old game to make it work with mew engine1
Some of the clients I work with have their own in house (or outsourced) developer that works on day to day tasks. I let them know their load time was pretty bad, and gave them a list of changes. One of them was 'Properly remove content that was no longer being used'
Because adding 'display:none' on a div full of large image is definitely not helping.
I have been helping out a teammate with a code fix but never wants to try my code solutions, instead he always complaints about it, even if they work and comply with the conventions. (I am his dev lead)2
Am I the only one who isn't really that bothered by Mozilla's mistake with Firefox and that Mr robot thing?
They made a big fuck-up, yes, but do you think they'll do it again? I don't.
They aren't a perfect company, but neither is anyone fucking else! They're still helping the web, giving grant money to open source, and have the best docs I've found, so I think this is just a misstep, not a red flag.2
Not a rant but a helping request.
A friend of mine just asked me if I can make an ERP System for his father, he wants to take control of the inventory, and the merchandise decrease.
Any advice of which database would be better for this job since I don't think he is going to pay for a license or something like that.
I was thinking using MySQL and C# or maybe Java.
Any comment is well appreciated ☺️7
In my company we have some awards that are given to people doing some things for customers and doing it good. There are nominations and so on, this year my friend got one for having good relations with customers, being calm and helping them how he can best. Of course there was written something about his calm, helping others, being patitent (...). But nobody from people that he is helping ever saw him screaming like today before he knew that he will be awarded:
“HOW THE FUCK THOSE IDIOTS CAN BREAK THINGS LIKE THAT, THERE IS NO FUCKING WAY”
And he got award for being calm and patient :D4
Was helping a friend fixing apache url redirects he says I've got cent os i was a bit nervous. The configs were in httpd.conf file but as soon as i try to edit i see there is no nano editor
But there was vi editor, now I'm on call helping this dev and googling vim cheat sheet 😂😂😂😂😂, i had no idea how to edit the file. Its not that hard though.4
I'm trying to write a test plan but there are TOO many ways to PROCRASTINATE. devRant you're not helping...2
had a blast helping a pal install arch (and setting up the necessities, like i3-gaps, neofetch, wal, etc...). tonight was awesome.
PS: i can recite any basic arch install by memory now, EFI or BIOS, and i'm slightly better at navigating vim now5
I just started helping a friend write their Java exercises that they have to do over the summer for AP Computer Science. The following code is what I inherited from them, which is a person who just finished learning Java for a year in another class. I am without words.
My dad helping me build my first PC... It had an AMD K series and a whole 256 Megabytes of RAM... it's still sitting in the attic.
That moment you're helping out a colleague with his ticket and stuff isn't working and you ask him.
Hey you do reset your cache right?
On which he replies yes of course I do.
10 minutes later you finally walk over to him and you see his browser open without Dev tools.........
Stupid moderators in some server tells users to "stop adding oil to the flame" but isnt they're not even helping to mute/ban him/her. The best logic is that at the end of the day whether I argue or not, Im still at fault.1
So I have a client who wants to integrate their system with Quickbooks. On live chat to quickbooks to find out if it's possible with their API. They have no interest in helping. The agent was terrible and disconnected after 3 mins. I'm trying to give you money, why are you making it so hard!!!
I'm looking for my replacement... Helping HR to validate the profiles, and I'm discarding people only because they write their code in Spanish... Name variables etc. I feel they are not following good practices.. ( We are a Spanish speaker country... )1
Not a rant!
Anyone who worked with Angular 4 with ngRX 4 interested in lending a helping hand. I an stuck with some error from past 36hrs.
"If it wasn't for this glaring error, this other guy's method would be perfect, not this simple fucking thing you gave me that I can't get to work because binary operations scare me"
I might just stop helping this person.
Searching for a solution to an issue related to FFMPEG and all the Stackoverflow related questions have 1 or 2 answers that are completely miles away from solving the issue. Superuser, not helping also.
I am going back to the farm for sure.2
Helping out of goodwill with the time I have only to receive nothing but terrible attitude.
I know it can get frustrating but don't throw that frustration on me. Especially when I'm genuinely helping out and going out of the way to do so.
Helping to debug others and being debugged is just deep satisfaction.
Willing to do this is for sure a gift
I enjoy working through problems with friends and coworkers, teaching and learning, and generally helping get work done. I feel a bit like I'm being used as a tool and not a resource though. At first I was helping someone with code here and there, but now it's every day like clockwork, and I'm basically doing their work for them. I'm trying to guide them by explaining my thought process, but it almost seems sometimes like they're just waiting for answers to type.
On the plus side I'm getting hella practice on multiple projects and it probably looks good to higher ups being so resourceful, but can a guy get either a break or a raise? Lol
you know, yesterday I wanted at xamarin... today I could fix it.
as a helping tip for you, if you're gonna install it, remember to enable the windows universal package thingy, it makes it work somehow.
Quote from an email: Please confirm that the attached list is the list of people that have the ability to load "versions" into SVN.
Gods, I hate non-technical project managers.
So one of my friend is doing her internship now and she has to program in Java because her boss believes she is studying IT although it's not the case. She is feeling really bad because it took her a week to code what is for them a simple program... I don't know what to say to her... It's not like it's a good thing to learn Java through a specific program! Anyway it's just so annoying these people who believe that if you're studying tech, you must "of course" know a programming language...5
when you are trying to fix something for another team and they have 3 dev environments with none of them in sync with the git repo
Anyone else feel like they spend half of their day helping their boss to debug and code? I mean he only has about 20 years of experience over me.
The "It doesn't work" response when you are helping a friend do some stuff on a computer just kills me.1
Skittles is helping me out with the Salesforce integration I needed to write for work.
It's the little things in life, when you work from home... :)
Its hard to manage people in a development team if someone is behind and not willing to learn and being a happy go lucky programmer with someone helping cleaning up his codes 😭 better solution is to rolloff this resource 😈2
Progressive Web apps :
In chrome you can use <6% of the free memory to store things.
Now imagine this situation :
Let's assume you have x amount of free memory in the system.
For first application : 0.06x
For second app : 0.06(x-0.06x)
And it goes on.
So for the thousandth developer,
It's a total fuckall.
How is this helping developers!
Don't suppose any mac user's out there feel like helping me test my application's demo?
Can only compile for mac bu can't test unfortunately :-/2
Guys, how do you structure branching in an enterprise project?
We're using git, managers are MIA, I'm basically helping another new guy kick off and maintain the projects that we have.
What would be a good branching strategy? Front end and backend in the same project, 5 man team in the future.2
That moment that im helping a client, they try to restart their station and this windows update that takes many hours decides to start.
So, today I was helping my cousin with his math homework, then I realized he had found the equation for a sequence of numbers taking the first index as 0 ... I never been so proud in my life.
It was wrong tho :(
Helping my friend with his UI part of his project. It's for saving a file directly from the download URL to Google Drive (save-to-drive)
Any networking guru's here? I have a practical question regarding network controllers (SDN)
Help please. Stackoverflow is not helping 😫
Since I'm not getting a lot of help on SO, might as well post it here. If anyone has experience with FFMPEG RTMP streaming and feels like helping a brother out, please do take a look :)
Side projects, also, when I read something interesting I make a small example using it myself to understand it, well some other things too like: attend meetups, pair programming, helping buddies with their issues (you don't have to know everything to give a hand), read blogs/books
I'm starting an app open-source. Consists of an emergency "sonar", which you will publish notices and reply too with your connected peers. And I need suggestions and collabs. Can see on my GitHub: github.com/roqueando/konarium.io
Who is interested in helping in backend or frontend I started a workgroup on slack too, so here is the room: todevmore.slack.com
If you have a question, comment below I will reply.
ugh I just wasted an hour of my life on `tar`. Unzip, edit file, rezip. Seriously. How hard can that be? And no DSM, "invalid file format" doesn't do crap for helping me debug.
(I know, tar is the butt of a lot of memes around here, but it's legitimately frustrating.)
looking for cool people to join our crew for doing nice projects together and helping each outher out. Base in Vienna. open worldwide.3
Started a new contract, nearly end of first week without access to code repository. Spent all day helping on old contract and looking up Archer gifs for our internal messaging app.
As I read some Devs rant they are out of job, thought to share something that came to my inbox.
Company called Toggl is hiring
They have some test online to try and most of all jobs are work from home too.
Try checking them out
New software unveiled at the CES could track down on password sharing on streaming platforms. The program uses “machine learning” so that the platform will improve as it is being used, helping to further identifying “consumption patterns.”
Uh, oh. Helping finish a project heavy on forms. Notice that everything is straight up jQuery to pull and push every single individual input value. Not a form tag in sight. But there are tables. Tables are everywhere.
Spent the day helping someone troubleshoot why they can't print from their Samsung tablet, because somehow as a DBA I "know how to do that stuff." Never figured out why it wasn't working.
Do you consider helping a colleague with more experience than you as a wating time in your own work ? Some manager told me I should focus on my work...1
Im not so experienced and feels great when an opportunity of helping another dev appears. What a great community we have
