My dad called me up at 11:30 PM telling me that his computer wasn't booting. I drive over to see what was going on. I notice immediately that the motherboard light is a solid amber light.
Me: "The motherboard is amber, that means it's failing to POST".
Dad: "How soon can we fix it? I need to run my Ebay business."
Me: "A week probably. You have a laptop that works can you use that?"
Dad: "It doesn't work great with Windows, it's not a very powerful compu"
Me: "You're going to use Linux dad. Welcome to Linux."11 -
While helping my son with his C++ homework I noticed there was an actual shit ton of warnings in the teacher's code.
I'm beginning to think there is some merit in the maxim, "He who can does. He who cannot, teaches."
Uhheesh.3 -
Just broke up with my ex-girlfriend after 2 years of relationship. This might sound strange but scrolling after scrolling on dev rant is actually helping me getting through this situation!13

When you release your first plugin for vscode and you just see it grows and grows yeserday was 350 downloads and now it's almost 700!
Now that's a great feeling and it seems I was helping people! \0/9 -
There are times when being "friendly neighbor it guy" pays back.
I have a neighbors, their son is little less intelligent than average person after being injured in accident, I help them from time to time. He gets the pc trashed with adware, usual stuff, they ask me to clean it up.
Recently I broke my arm. They offered to cook for me until I recover to full health... Seriously, that's huge help when you live alone and spend most time working. I'm glad to have them.
Wanted to share with you guys, there are people who appreciate your help with their pc and can give back if you're in need.3 -
Google thanks for helping with my assignments! Here is a tribute to you as way to thank for the same.3

Earlier today, after helping a team mate with an issue, she ask:
"How come you already know the issue even though that's not your code?"3 -
Got them 3 weeks now. Tested them before posting, here my summary:
Pro:
Arrived in 1 week (US to Germany)
Squeaky while squeezy
Nice hats
Really are helping
Stressball tastes nice

IT'S FUCKING HARD TO FUCKING PUT THE CHRISTMAS HATS ON

Pair programing on project with friend.
We both feel like the other person is doing all the work and we are not really helping.
Twice the developer power, twice the imposter syndrome.1 -
Spent 2 hours helping some kid learn python, he ended up using it to make DDoS products. I feel used and ashamed (':9

I'm helping a friend with programming in c#
He's a beginner and wants to learn. He learns as easy as I do.
I saw his project yesterday and everything was written in one method. I thought I was dying. Then remembered my first project... he will be fine3 -
After some searching I found a solution on stackexchange.
The solution was a reference to a patch that I created a couple of years ago :)1 -

This dumb pretentious bitch.
We are both computer science students, she is writing her bachelor thesis, I'm in 4th semester, but have 6 years of professional programming experience.
So naturally when she had a problem implementing the MOTHERFUCKING PREPARING SOFTWARE, which she needs to begin writing her thesis I helped her.
First I started explaining every last bit of code, trying to teach her something, so that she wouldn't need my help ALL the time.
After a while I realised that this BLOODY GIRL FROM HELL acquired nearly half her credits by other peoples help, so I just fix the code hoping it would be over soon.
When that software was done, keep in mind, I coded nearly 90 FUCKING PERCENT OF THAT SHITTY ASS PIECE OF CRAP SOFTWARE, she asked me to also "help" her implementing a generator for samples she could test the software with.
Naturally at this point I said I'd be busy with own projects etc. And declined.
So now, nearly 1 Month after she didn't talk to me, THAT ARROGANT PIECE OF SHIT WANNABE SCIENCE BACHELOR asked if I could help her with LaTEX.
At first I was speechless. How could she have that amount of balls, asking me that. As I only am a ranting asshole inside, I declined in the most polite way.
WHAT THE FUCK! I HOPE YOU WILL FAIL YOUR THESIS AND ALL THE 12 SEMESTERS YOU STUDIED WILL HAVE BEEN FOR NOTHING, THUS SENDING YOU TO LIVE ON THE STREET WITHOUT MONEY AND DIE A HORRIBLE AND LONELY DEATH SURROUNDED BY BEGGERS TRYING TO STEAL YOUR KIDNEYS!
Sincerely,
Me.14 -
"I want my API to return insults as error messages if they forget shit"
Uh no, I prefer helping them out by writing proper documentation than sending a giftbox with me flipping them off like Linus Fucking Torvalds for their spaghetti usage of your API5 -
Fucking co-worker!!
This asshole blamed the delay in delivery of the project on me.
I mean what the fuck dude, I was just helping you out. That wasn't even my job.
Pathetic people!5 -
This rant means YOU if you are one of those people that "fix" their family's computers.
I was visiting my family over the holidays and while I managed to stay away from fixing their computers for the most time, I offered to help my grandfather to update the Garmin navigation device he wanted to gift my father. (They do not use smartphones for navigation, and my father doesn't want "these modern shitty phones".)
When booting up my grandfather's laptop, I realized something odd: Linux Mint boot screen. Wut?
And immediately I said: "It could be impossible to update your navigation device on this laptop."
As true enough, the Garmin Express update software requires either a Windows PC or a Mac; and even though I vaguely hoped it might be possible to upgrade through Linux, I just could not be bothered to find out that day.
What I wondered though is why did my grandfather of all people ran Linux!?
Don't get me wrong, I use Linux myself on my work machine and I never want to work with something else when coding; yet my grandfather is an end user of the show-me-where-and-what-and-how-often-to-click-kind.
What could he gain by it?
As it turns out, the computer nerd's friend of my uncle managed his PC. And my uncle and he decided unanimously my grandfather should better run Linux. Is it something my grandfather needs? No. BUT IT'S RIGHT! Suck it up! (My father's laptop therefore also runs Linux Mint. So he can't upgrade his new device either.)
This is the ugly kind of entitled nerd-dom I truly detest.
When discussing things further, my grandfather told me that he had problems ever since with his printer. Under Windows, he knew how to print on the special photo paper. Under Linux, all he can barely manage is to print on normal papers. Shame, printing photos was the only thing he liked doing on that device. What did my uncle's friend tell him?
"Get a decent printer!"
Fuck that guy.
It's fine if Linux works for you, but before you install it on a PC of a relative, you better make sure it fits their needs! If you have that odd member that only wants to write letters, read emails, use facebook, and wants to play that browser game, feel free to introduce them to Linux.
Yet if they have any special wish, don't stand in their way.
If they want to do something that requires a certain OS, don't just decide for them that their desire is wrong, but help them achieve their goal. If you can't align that with your ideology, then get the fuck out of my way and stop "helping".
For some people, a computer is a device to achieve a certain goal, a work. They only get hindered by your ill-advised attempts at virtue signalling.9 -
Dark Vaduck drinking beer instead of helping me to write a genetic algorithm for solving knapsack 0/1 problem ...5
-
Do you ever spend hours helping someone with a programming problem, trying to teach them and develop their skills, but at the back of you mind you're thinking, "no amount of help is going to save you from being a fucking cretin"?6
-
Been telling relatives that I'm an applied math major to get out of helping them with their tech issues.3
-
At new work, I am supposed to use Windows. So I need to learn how to Dev on Windows. Google is not helping.
Image for reference. And the list goes on...15 -
During my final year at graduation,
I was helping a colleague dual booting Linux Mint with Win10.
Asked her to restart Win10; she didn't know how to.
Now, I've no idea how much more user friendly can Microsoft make it, and how much more dumb people can be.8 -
Someone who noticed that I do programming as a hobby and therefore set harder work for me in class. He also encourages my side projects and at the moment is helping me build a native app for the school :)2
-
I really love how devrant changed from a "place where developer s could post rants about technology " to " A loving , considerate , helping out place where every dev is welcome "4
-
If I spend 50% of my time in meetings, 30% of my time doing things for support/helpdesk which I'm not allowed to automate, 10% as a technical consult and 10% helping other devs... am I even a developer anymore?6
-
Since roughly 981 Malaysians are using my app now for helping the needy. So I decided to send this message to those who use my platform , to remind them to stay strong.
Because I begin to see people are fed and slowly I believe someday we can do a better job than our government.8 -
Decided I'm going to tell my boss I'm no longer going to do wordpress.
It all started innocently, like helping someone find an option or something, but now I have to write plugins...
Not part of the deal.
I've also got 0 motivation to go to work since starting this shitty project. I used to want to go to work and looked forward to helping out, but this is just soul numbing.
Let's see how that goes (either tomorrow or Wednesday).
I'll let you guys know if I get fired :p14 -
So I didn't realise till I was helping a colleague debug but his build take 3 minutes for every tiny change.
On my machine it takes 4s
This guy has been sitting around waiting for builds 90% of the time FOR MONTHS
And hasn't thought to try and fix that2 -
I have this one question..
So when I want to ask something or posting/ranting something, there are different categories.. I can differentiate between others vs a collab.. but what about questions, rants, about devrant, random, what are the differences between these categories apart from the specific category helping the algo to populate your newsfeed..
Anyone??14 -
I've never had a problem with helping junior devs but when their keyboard and mouse looks like they bought it used from a primary school - glossy and covered in food etc... All I can think is burn it..... Burn it with fire.
Seriously... Keep your peripherals clean... They get nasty pretty quickly.1 -
I'm pretty sure many people agree with this, me too in some way but seriously, what's the problem about helping some relatives with tech stuff?17
-
Whenever someone gets rejected for a dev job and the recruiter/HR person says "Our team just feels you are a bit too junior for the position at this time".. what they're actually saying is "We, as a company, are just not willing to invest any time or resources into training or helping you grow professionally."4
-
Coworker was helping me getting used to XQuery, which I‘ve never done before. In the middle of the task he looked at his watch and said, that he has to do a phone call and left.
That was the last time I‘ve seen him.1 -
In one of our webinterfaces you could swap between users once you logged in by changing the user in the link.
Not intended but our support is using this "feature" frequently because then they don't have to log in again when helping another client so it's not planned to be fixed4 -
On Saturday's I volunteer at this place where I teach/tutor kids how to program. I was sitting down with this kid and helping him when I found this pleasant surprise hidden in his code-
[go to my other rant for pt.2]6 -
For some people thanksgiving is for spending time with family. For me it is helping grandma with all of her technical issues.1
-
I just spent 2 hours helping a fellow Sr Dev format an “if block” in code. Then helped show them how to step through the code. This is what passes as a senior at my company? I no joke have stayed at this job for 6 more months than I wanted to out of pure pity for my team. I want to quit so bad, but the team is in such terrible shape and can’t hire anyone new that is willing to stay. All good people personally, but gosh this job is just brain dead and eats my weekends when I should be focusing on family. Back to helping through the 500 line if block. There are worse things in life, but this just feels terrible.11

I'm currently helping a junior developer in my team to get on board. He is new to Linux and whenever I ask him to work on vi editor, I get to see that look on his face!16 -
Just doing pet sitting for the amazing girl that featured in one of my last rants, and she left a bag of weed in an envelope for me. I love that woman.2
-
it wasn't even an interview, they were just glad my cv wasn't absolute garbage, it was basically an introduction and welcome to the team. the only question i remember being asked was wether i preferred FE or BE (which was pointless, because i ended up helping with full stack)2
-
Have a friend ask me helping him with a project for University.
Make an application in Java for Matrix and numerous applications.
Done, but I hid an easter egg. If you divide the matrix by 0 scalar output
FAP FAP FAP FAO FAP FAP.
He doesn't know.2 -
I'm trying to detoxify myself from jquery. It's hard, I know. To this day, I did not touch it for two months and I received a small medal which certify it. My friends and my familiars are helping me in this path and I want to thank them5

I should worship the people who came up with stack exchange and w3schools. can't thank enough for helping out daily in work. 🙌3

Today was a lot. I heard water outside and some shouting, come to find out the upstairs neighbor’s pipe burst. Spent the next hour or two collecting as much water as possible in the coolers we have to try to move it to the storm drain and protect the downstairs neighbor’s apartment. You'd be amazed how much water can fish out of a broken pipe.
Spent a nice hour or two chatting with the downstairs neighbor after they asked what happened (having just realized the water was shut off and having missed all the activity).
Was just settling down from that when I heard a kid screaming for help and panicked shouting. Come to find out my favorite neighbor is unresponsive and can't breathe and her kids are all panicked and waiting for the ambulance. The 911 operator is trying to give them instructions but they're too panicked to listen. I get them to move her onto the floor, then finally get the oldest to do chest compressions until the ambulance shows up. The paramedics managed to get her back, she was breathing on her own and talking, and take her to the hospital but it took a long time to get there. Hugged the heck out of everyone who seemed like they needed it and tried to say comforting shit that it seemed like they needed to hear.
I haven't felt this emotionally tapped out in a long-ass time.7 -
So I was setting up my friend's NAS. Got everything worked in minutes (dns, port forwarding etc.). Enabled ftp connection tried it locally, working. Tried remotely, timed out...
After half an hour I was about to tear my hair out one by one when he suddenly said to wait a sec he knows what's the problem. Tapped two on his phone and suddenly, it's working.
THE FUCKING PHOTO UPLOADING FROM HIS PHONE TO THE CLOUD BLOCKED ALL INCOMING CONNECTIONS AND HE WAS AWARE OF THAT ALL ALONG. WHAT THE FUCK MAN, DO YOU ENJOY SEEING ME STRUGGLE?? That was literally an "I'm out" moment. -
Helping a random junior out with an ML project on an online tutor site.
Her: So what is the syntax for implementing xyz function
Me: *opens Google* *opens pandas docs* *searches the function* *tell her the syntax*
She: Woah thanks a lot!
I collected my tutor fees feeling good about myself.10 -
So i have been helping people on the Steam forums for a game in Beta and today i got someone having a go at me for it.
WHAT THE FLYING FUCK, I WILL BE GETTING DEATH THREATS FOR HELPING AN ELDERLY WOMAN NEXT!!!14 -
Well, my company hired a total amateur who can't do anything right on his own without copying code from me or the internet and I have to pretend he's helping in any capacity because otherwise I'm a "bad team player" and "should communicate more".
Helped me get over impostor syndrome, at least.7 -
"let's quickly compile php by hand and get php-fpm running!"
All is compiled well but I can't, for the love of what-the-fuck-ever figure out how to load extensions within the configuration and the internet isn't helping out much either.
How fucking difficult can this be?!17 -
Wish I could be Geralt in real life. Fighting ghouls, slaying griffins, brewing potions, repairing swords, helping people, getting laid and roaming across seeing wonders of nature.
Instead I'm here fighting with QA's, squashing bugs, brewing tea, wasting hours in stand-up, pulling my hairs out and finally trying to stay sane in an insane world 😐14 -
The mail found my stickers!!
Thanks devRant devs!
I'm super glad I found this community, you guys are making me pull out less and less hair and helping me laugh5 -
I seem to be everyone's free tech support. I'm always helping my friends and family but I don't get anything in return. 😣5
-
Thank you all for helping me to my first real goal, 1k! Thank you all! Love this community so much! Let’s continue that.5
-
What's a last day on the job suppose to be like?
I'm sure it's not working until 2am helping the company finalize a project. They are not happy that I decided to go to bed after a 12 hour day instead of pulling an all nighter helping.8 -
1) Continue helping people after helping too much
2) Getting into online pissing contests
3) Writing lists1 -
Motivating and helping each other by forming small teams/pairs of devs who look after each other. No one likes to code alone14

Working a full-time job, then helping with the newborn/household, then staying up until 3am because it's the only time I have to work on my app.

That sinking feeling of horror when you are helping a student with a problem in their assignment only to see major logic errors that prove they dont actually understand what they are doing. * drinks wiskey in prep for marking *5

Circa spring of last year, Computer Science 1
The guy sitting next to me asked me a clarifying question about what our professor was mumbling and scribbling illegibly on the board.
I start to respond, only for the professor to YELL at me in front of the class for helping him, saying that programming was a personal affair and that I should be minding myself.
He even yelled at me for helping someone that is "too stupid help themselves" and that I shouldn't worry if the person next to me doesn't get it.
I felt bad, the kid next to me felt bad, and I avoided a semester of computer science just to not have him again.2 -
My IT teacher in high school. Got me into programming, helped me take programming from a hobby to a career and is still helping me today. Honestly one of the coolest people I know.1

My fiancée is helping her dad setup an iTunes account and it's just painful to listen too. I can't take much more of this.1

When you're helping someone with a bug for ages and then try something random and it's miraculously fixed so you have to spend another hour figuring out why...1

Dear Valentine,
I am writing this to express my love towards you. I know not many express their love towards their own. But I won't forget you and our relationship. Here goes my love for you.
I would first like to thank you for bearing with me & supporting me all along. You have been there with me through all my good and bad times. In fact my day starts with you and ends with you. I was with you in all my moods. There were a few times when I didn't believe in you, but you did what I wanted. There were times when you let me down, but you made it up to you later. I am sorry for heavy workloads these days. I love your performance. I know you love doing it. I know you more than anyone. I guess you also know me better w.r.t my history. Thanks for helping me getting my work done, helping me with job applications, helping me find new people, helping me have fun, helping me organised and for everything.
You do know there might be time where I may have to replace you. I assure you to do my best to upgrade you instead of replacing so that I can hang on to you much longer.
I love you 😍 < >-ThinkpadE570

I wish devrant came with instructions on how to CLOSE THE FUCKING APP AND GO TO SLEEP.
IT'S TWO FORTY FUCKING NINE AM!!
P. S. The flamebaits aren't helping either5 -
First day of new job, starts in 3 hours. Imposter syndrome is strong! Lack of sleep from stress isn't helping!
On a side note, I have reconfirmed that I don't actually need sleep. College theories confirmed!4 -
It sucks when another developer starts shit with you. Like you should be working & helping each other out but instead you just compete and cuss each other out.3
-
1) Helping my girlfriend getting her graduation.
2) Maxing out my Cassette collection
3) Repairing my Gameboy
4) Growing my plants, especially my Carolina Reaper chili
5) Visiting my friends across the country
6) Lots of things that might or might not be illegal but fun5 -
Cant decide whether to talk about how TeamViewer banned me because they think me helping my girlfriend all the time was commercial use,
or when she saw my porn while abusing my computer's GPU for training her model6 -
Fml. Im occasionally helping a friend who is taking an intro cs class. Well today I needed to Skype him but Skype wasn't installed yet. Didn't think when clicking through the installation process so bing is now my search bar. Fml....7

Thanks stupid workmates who fuck up the project first and then 4 hours before the deadline tell you without any feelings "it's late, I'm going to sleep".
NO FUCK YOU GET YOUR ASS HERE AND START HELPING ME4 -
It's the start of my career - I got an exciting internship offer. There is a lot of work though. I must say, devRant is helping a lot ;-)
(Joined today)6 -
When people keep asking the same kind of questions over and over and you realize it's your fault for always helping them out so they don't learn how to debug on their own.
It's hard to do nothing but in a learning environment it's often the best.2 -
I got recognized!
I'm new here and was mostly learning, but my team pushed through some bad issues and I got recognized as well. Even for helping whatever little I could.
For all the rants of bad bosses and clients and work. Here's a happy one. :)
I'm in good company in this company. -
!dev
finally, after a week of helping my friend to learn the basics of front-end web development, he got the internship at one of my friend's office ( he set up the interview on my request).
It does feel good.1 -
Why do some developers write the official documentation with low interpretability and a high number of technical terms? It does not look cool if it does not serve the purpose it was made for - Helping us understand your software!!!
-
The best part of being dev is the community, its also the most unique one IMHO. I mean what other profession in the Whole Wide World has such great and ingrained culture of helping eachother and sharing knowledge ?1
-
I've noticed that, wherever I am, people tend to come to me for help and guidance. It happened at my previous job and is now happening at my current job too.
These past few months I've spent most of my day helping my coworkers instead of actually writing code. I'm not complaining, I like helping, but I feel like I'm not being productive.
Is there a name for this role? Should I embrace it?2 -
So I'm the typical nerd in my class, who studies a lot, and really dives into the topics.
It's really fun to see when other people are struggling with something. That means I can try to help them, and I just get a lot of joy out of helping people 😊55 -
I actually enjoy helping out my non-IT friends with IT related problems from time to time. I feel useful when I do so :/3
-
Helping grandma with her computer, feeling good about myself, proud of her for learning to use a computer atage 84 !
Oh wait. You use internet explorer? You hate chrome? How can you hate chrome you know nothing about comput.....
Ah shit. Sorry grandma.. just.. use chrome9 -
Convinced another fellow developer to join devRant:
Welcome @binogure!
He's an indie game developer I met online and I'm helping him to translate his game, "City Game Studio", at the moment.
Check it out! The game is currently in closed beta and it's really awesome!
#ad ;D6 -
Copilot - not convinced. My experience after a few months is that the suggested code disturbs my line of thought, and for complex code I'd rather it just fucked off and stopped "helping".
It will dumb down developers, mark my words.8 -
I'm facing big issues on one of my apps and luckily a user is helping me doing some tests as I can't reproduce the issue. He just sent me an email and guess what?! He wrote "happy weekend". No. It's not going to be an happy weekend for me.1
-
an IT student from same semester another section.
met because I was helping with a side project. and he happens to be there.
here's the interaction:
guy: heard ... u work for a company..
me: ya.. um web development
guy: never heard of that ...wheyyyyyy ....re is it!

You can work from home! Heck, you can work from anywhere in the world... we just want you to be at the client 65% of the time!
Whaaaaaa... what? Are you fucking kidding me? How is that helping me avoid having to sit in traffic? -

Have you ever gone to a bar just for the purpose of beer-coding/barcoding?
I just did it and it is awesome, but too much beer is not helping very much for difficult tasks...2 -
LINUX TO THE RESUCE!
I was helping with stuff for my ComTech teacher. For some reason his mac refused to format an SSD.
Dont worry though, mkfs.hfsplus had no problems :D -
Need Django developers to contribute to keralarescue.in, a website which is helping countless people in the state of Kerala, India who are facing deadly floods.

Just a random shout out to @Lyniven for helping me with modular application architecture at past few days3

"How to exit the Vim editor?" hit 1,000,000 view milestone and a stackoverflow guy wrote a blog article about it with some neat facts. A good read imho.
https://stackoverflow.blog/2017/05/...2 -
Someone gave me his code and told me to improve it and being the nice guy I am I agreed. Then while trying to work on that, a dozen other people asked me to help them with their code too, so in the end I barely got any work done.
I should stop helping people2 -
I was helping a teammate investigate an issue he is working on, while having a lot of stuff to do for myself, until I notice that the asshole was very busy sending personal emails and basically I was doing his job...3

My manager told me that when he noticed my male colleague disturbing tasks and helping out juniors, he recommended him for a lead position then proceeded to tell how I am a great mentor and how well my year end goal items were managed.12

When you post a web designer job announcement for U.S. citizens living in the U.S. who speak and write perfect English and 75% of people who apply have terrible English and either outright lie about their citizenship and location or beg for the job in spite of the requirements.2

Apart from linux, it has to be vue.js, quasar and express.js
Vue.js had made my development extremely easy, faster and managable
Quasar brought great Styling and various other powerful features to vuejs. Thus helping save even more time
And express.js don't need any explanation. Better code organization and easy to get started. -
Team member knows x better than me?
No fucking way am I gonna ask them to do it. Even if I have to learn the whole damn thingamajig from scratch. Coffee and some Halo OST are all I need, baby!
(In fairness to myself, said teammate is a bit of a hijacker when it comes to helping...)4 -
I enjoy helping people but jez, just learn to read. Why do I need to explain to 15 people what to do, when there's a document with simple instructions to follow ?
How the fuck do you think I do ? I am not a genius, you are just dumb3 -
Today we were told that management decided that apart from software development we are also responsible for internal IT support, such as helping business with installing programs on their laptops. Yay!2
-
Bug requires 2 developers, full-time for 4 days to trace, debug, scratch heads, analyse logs. Third developer helping occasionally. Finally identify fix. Fix is 2 lines. D'oh.3

No way. I hope this is a joke...else its not helping building up trust in their competence (Australian vpn provider)1

tfw I get called smart for just helping a lad having a welcome splash from node-canvas buffer.
Well, you sometimes love people giving you gratitude, doesn't it? -
Another (primarily back end) developer is helping out on my (mostly front end) project amends because I'm too busy with others. Should be a blessing but really I'll have to keep going to check on him or answer questions about the project. :/7

So.. There are about 4 jobs in my country that even mention golang, and only as an "advantage"
😟 Wow.. learning Go really isn't helping..
Why isn't it used widely as the main language of a dev team?? Too young? Or are there serious issues, that most companies prefer using c#/ruby/python for web dev backend?8 -
I have two math final exams on the same day, and one is scheduled 30 minutes after the first one 🙁🙁

Me: I just know there's gotta be a better way to do this.
PM: No I think it's just a problem of inexperience. You and $coworker just haven't spent enough time in WordPress.
Me: no you're right. I'm just trying to get a better handle on the code and make things as less error prone as possible.
PM: well we really don't have very many errors.
Me: wait, what about the (list off other issues)?
PM: those all have been resolved already.
Me: Oh. Ok. I guess it's just me.

Fuck Emby and their decision to go proprietary. A lot of good folks worked their asses off helping make Emby what it is today and they turn around and fuck the open source community.
I'm glad Jellyfin decided to fork them and continue the work there.

Been spending the afternoon working with our IT department helping them use the webpage they supposedly designed so they can help me with a separate issue. Turns out they were using IE...7

I am on a forum where we actually help each other out. However, when I see someone post something, and it feels like they are putting in low effort (post practically empty) I don't spend my time getting info from them. I let others in the forum do the "show us your code" or "explain what this means" posts. I also start getting sarcastic. That is not cool in that forum so I refrain from posting.
So today I saw a post where they posted an ambiguous problem. It had to do with scrolling speed of a list in a gui interface. People made the posts like "not enough info", or "it could be...". The person further explained it was not a performance problem, but a "it just scrolls slow". At this point I can tell they have made zero effort to understand the scrolling mechanics of the object they are using. So I left the post and decided to let others deal with this. I so wanted to post a sarcastic remark though. So I am going to share with you:
That is definitely a case of "pixel drag".2 -

Apple is really a rotten company.
They have a deal with Chinese government, so they are basically helping abuse human rights.
Recently they disabled AirDrop in China, to further prevent freedom of speech during protests. And they are threatening to remove Twitter from app store, since it Musk is ramping up free speech.14 -
I'm always helping out a girl in my class with her coding assignments but her code is absolutely atrocious. I don't have the heart to tell her that her whole method, file and variable naming, and process is wrong and is causing her so many headaches.11

I used to strive 7years back to become the company project manager. they agency was helping me to get there, and when they fired the old PM I thought "this is it!!!"

Quick question. How do i get myself to believe that I am good enough. I am good at what I do people tell me and i really want to move towards part time lecturing but the idea terrifies me... But i really want to help others and currently just being needed when others need me doesnt make me feel i am able to help others enough..
In short, how do you deal with an internal problem with wanting to help but being afraid others wont take ke seriously.4 -

Hey, so I'm making this just to be able to create and avatar but I want to bring something up - why is there so much elitism/gatekeeping in programming in general? Why aren't devs more open to helping interns/juniors out?9
-
I really like helping other learn how to use a programming language or solve problems on general. I often go out of my way and stop working on my hobby projects, just to help someone.
Thag being said, I'm no prgramming god. I myself am striving to become a better programmer.
I make mistakes, I can't always help you, I am still learning, but I only have good intentions. And you are by no means obligated to follow my advice. Quite the contrary, fight me, try to prove me wrong or say point out possible flaws. THINK ABOUT WHAT I TELL YOU. DON'T JUST BLINDLY FOLLOW MY ADVICE AND BITCH ON ME LATER.
This happens rather often and I can see why you want to blame me. And I can't deny that part of this is also my fault.
Situations like these don't really tilt me.
But today someone had the fucking nerve to pop a file into the chat and get mad at me for sugvesting a cleaner, shorter and more efficient solution. LIKE I DON'T FUCKING CARE THAT IT TOOK YOU A WHOLE DAY TO IMPLEMENT SOMETHING I CAN DO BETTER IN MINUTES, I JUST WANT TO HELP YOU.
But the best thing I get afterwards: "But you told me to do it like that" BITCH WHAT!?
I have chat logs telling me loud and clear that the concept we never talked about before in private nor on a public server (bless discord's search function). And I will not accept your lousy excuse of having me cobfused with someone. You disrespected me greatly, you put words in my mouth, just to justify your pity anger, when I'm trying to help you?!
Get crucified and put on a shooting range!
I offer you out of pure goodwill. Something you'd normally have to pay for. And this is the treatment I get in return?
Just rm -rf your disastrous, dd -if=/dev/urandom your harddrive and sod off!2 -

Was asked to crimp a simple Cat5 LAN cable in today's networking tutorial class. Little did the lecturer know I had been doing that (usually Cat6) for almost a year. Walked into the class 30 minutes late, terminated both sides within 5 minutes and just sat there helping my friends for the rest of the 2 hour class...1

Oi windows, your highly intelligent "transmission optimization process" is not really helping me by hogging the whole bandwidth while I'm downloading something.2

A developer in my team just implemented a new design from a screenshot. Because the copy of the app isn't written in his native language he had written the copy from the screenshot letter by letter.
I told him I was really impressed with his work (almost no errors!), but to me it was unacceptable that he should have to go through all this trouble. I also told him that next time he could ask me to write down the copy for him (it's written in my native language).
So I'm curious: who else here is programming for apps that aren't written in your own language, and what are the challenges you face? Also: how can I help the developers in my team with this? -
Well thanks....
So I might be a complete useless noob, but android studios help messages are not really helping at the moment either.. 😅 -

I have this habit of whenever I run up against an issue at work programming-wise (a step definition doesn’t behave the way I think it should, I have an error in the console when I attempt to do something and have to work out how to clear the error, etc.), I document the issue and the solution somewhere in the Slack.
This serves two purposes: discoverability for others who might run into that issue later and DISCOVERABILITY FOR MYSELF WHEN I INEVITABLY ENCOUNTER THE SAME ISSUE.1 -
This and devRant helping me wind down after a 10 hour day.
Why would you arrange a meeting at 5pm and not tell me? I have an hour commute too. :(5 -
FFS, I'm so fucking done. I spend half an hour helping somebody finding an error on start up only to accidentally solve it by telling him to insert some print statements.

Am I wrong in thinking that jobs where you are helping people will be completely shit pay.
But jobs where you are helping some CEO get richer, they’re the ones that are more likely to pay well?

Found this in one of the group's I'm in on Facebook. When everyone called him out on scamming people into helping him mine Etherium, he responded with so much word salad about entrepreneurship and blockchain he could open up a vegetarian eatery.

Sat next to a guy, like close enough to smack, but he would have hour long chat sessions with me on gchat going over work and projects. Kept his headphones on.
Another kid, one time I was helping him on HIS project he was given to finish before next day. I was helping so he didn't get stuck working TOO long over. The shit head still left at his normal quiting time and said he was gonna finish it at home. Still wasn't done the next morning when management needed it.1 -

I love donating anonymously. But sometimes, people just make it so hard to stay anonymous to donate! -_- I mean, if a thousand people are donating for you, its not like, you gonna go to each and everyone's house and thank them. Its not like after 1 year, you're gonna be able to remember at least half of their names. So why bother? If someone wanted to be public about their donation, they would do that even if you don't call him and ask, "Who are you? Why you are helping me?"
I'm helping you because I can and I want to. Helping others is something that makes me happy. But I wanna be anonymous!
I want to be the devilest person on the outside but I also wanna be the softest person on the inside. So, let me be it!2 -

In my company we have some awards that are given to people doing some things for customers and doing it good. There are nominations and so on, this year my friend got one for having good relations with customers, being calm and helping them how he can best. Of course there was written something about his calm, helping others, being patitent (...). But nobody from people that he is helping ever saw him screaming like today before he knew that he will be awarded:
“HOW THE FUCK THOSE IDIOTS CAN BREAK THINGS LIKE THAT, THERE IS NO FUCKING WAY”

I enjoy working through problems with friends and coworkers, teaching and learning, and generally helping get work done. I feel a bit like I'm being used as a tool and not a resource though. At first I was helping someone with code here and there, but now it's every day like clockwork, and I'm basically doing their work for them. I'm trying to guide them by explaining my thought process, but it almost seems sometimes like they're just waiting for answers to type.
On the plus side I'm getting hella practice on multiple projects and it probably looks good to higher ups being so resourceful, but can a guy get either a break or a raise? Lol -

So one of my friend is doing her internship now and she has to program in Java because her boss believes she is studying IT although it's not the case. She is feeling really bad because it took her a week to code what is for them a simple program... I don't know what to say to her... It's not like it's a good thing to learn Java through a specific program!
