Fucking awesome. The 'encryption backdoor law' in Australia went through!
Now, whenever served with such warrants, companies which are active in Australia will have to pay hefty fines if they don't give encrypted messages to law enforcement in readable form. No matter whether this means just decrypting it with the keys they have or pushing backdoors/inject code into the messaging apps/services in order to extract the contents.
Now let's see how much the big companies really care about their users! (I'd expect them to pull out of Australia but the chance that this'll happen is as tiny as about nothing)39
The Dutch minister of justice and (national) security is joining the countries that are in favor of weakening encryption algorithms so law enforcement "can combat child pornography and terrorism better".
Oh yeah no fucking great, I was hoping that the Dutch ministers weren't as incompetent on this one as the ones from the US and Australia who want this as well (and probably even more countries).
Let's fuck over an entire country with false arguments while it won't help for shit!
Are you fucking serious! 😈😈😈
Is this what a Junior Dev nowadays needs to know to be a successful candidate?14
I swear to god, I'm going to track down the dipshit who just made my day hilariously painful.
So here I am, finishing up this project that's been going on for what feels like an eternity, when I get an email "why doesn't order X show up in this other system?".
I mean, it's a common thing they can take 15 minutes to push across, so the usual quick glance and what do you know, it's just sitting there as if it's waiting to be pushed through, than an hour later... it's still there, so I start digging, maybe a data issue, nope looks all good, customer details, payment details, products...
just another order, jump on the logs and all looks fi......... wait.... why does this postcode have 3 digits and not 4 , Australia has 4 digit postal codes fyi, looks at order again, 3 digits, look at log, 3....hold on why's it only 3 digits, checks code, handled as string... ok..... where the fuck would it drop a digit.... frontend requires 4 digits, validation requires 4 digits... how the fuck did you get 3 digits in... I can't see anything anywhere that logically makes sense for this🤔
Drops address into google and it's a postcode starting with 0.
Jumps on DB and the fucker is an int in the postcode table. For all you playing at home 0123 <> 123
I don't know if I should feel bad, or impressed, it's been 7 years since this table was created, and 7 years before someone managed to live in one of these parts of the country with a leading 0.
QA didn't spot this years ago,
No one tested this exact scenario,
The damn thing isn't even documented as a required delivery area, but here we are!
Kudos good sir, you broke it! 🤜 🤛
You sir may get your order now!11
Hey DevRant community :-) I’m Milo, I’m quite new to this app and to be completely honest I’m already addicted to it! And honestly just having a community which is full of developers or people with common interests like myself just makes me feel warm and happy! .
A bit about myself I’m from Australia and gained an interest in Coding about 2 years ago where i landed a course in TAFE. Now i had absolutely no prior experience i was a complete rookie, first day was basically (if I remember) only one day of using the console with what I remember to be sequential programming. Well after that it was all GUI and a disaster i had no clue whatsoever of what i was doing and well interestingly enough i still managed to enjoy it and move on😅.
Fast forward about six months I’m now doing a proper degree and actually understanding concepts and better at coding and i love it!. Welp guys & gals i thank you for taking the time to read my post I certainly hope i posted this in the right section! :-)
Hope you all have a great night or day where ever you may be!.29
last time I went into a "computer shop" one of the staff members was trying to sell this poor little old bloke a mid spec macbook pro just to Skype and email his son/grandkids who live in Australia, when he asked if there was a cheaper option as he didn't have much money they very rudely told him no and that they where the "experts", best bit is when I tried to point out how wrong this was and that he could do that on a cheap tablet (let alone a macbook) to a manager he tried to convince me that he needed the macbook.
are these people just stupid or really that shallow as to try and convince an elderly man to spend such an outrageous amount of money.4
Hi DevRant fam! Unfortunately we've had it quite tough here in my beautiful land of Australia! So here is a pic of a local beach close to my home and fortunately a much nicer day! Hope you like it 😊6
Good fucking lord, Australia is looking at bring Decryption laws in, just when you think the world couldn’t get any closer to destroying itself.
Instead of receiving a motivation in 2018, my boss decided to go anti mainstream and started with demotivation speech.
He started with how good we were last year even when he wasn't around. Well done team! But after that, it went downhill.
We were asked to work even harder, we got new policy (no unpaid leave, no paid overtime, minimum 40 hours working, etc) which some of them make sense and some don't, a specifically set break time (apparently to shut down smokers for smoking at random times), and warning for not being punctual.
And pay rise only after end of financial year.
To make it worse, we are not allowed to take naps or watch youtube on our desk on our breaks.
I seriously wonder what happened during his Christmas NY break. I'm not an entrepreneur so I have no idea if that is a right way to run a company or if Australia government just created new law. But surely I know this is when I say "New year, new company"10
Rant about a german problem in english
I think we as the people should just sue the german government for neglect of progress and neglect of the education system. If your not familiar with the state of german IT we have worse internetspeeds than uganda or the notoriously shitty australia, our neighbourstates look at us in disbelief while laughing in optic fibre. Our school system seperates all students after 4th grade in 3 tiers, the lowest one gives you the future perspective as a social security case. The second and highest tier require masses of useless knowledge, so called "competences"(Kompetenzen) which are totally useless skills with no real world application because they are derived from real skills, a median ground between all possible applications of that skill. And while doing that they terribly insist on doing everything the "proper" way, meaning handwritten. Most people you would expect to have basic computer literacy, meaning age 40 and below, are incapable of using basic functions of a non-smartphone computer and do not understand the slightest of what they are actually doing or supposed to do. And I mean nothing technical. Germans are the reasons they still put word as a job requirement for devjobs because this disqualifies half of our population. This leads to many people having the archaeic "we versus the machines" mentality, thinking that if they ever let the computer do parts of the job, they will then lose all of it to the machines. Thats why you never strive past basic mathematical principles in mathematics, which is a big misnomer because you never do actual mathematics, only calculating and basic calculus and statics. If you get to use your calculator, its some basic casio with no actual functionality then standard operations. And even using that is shunned upon. How is this country ever supposed to become something more than it was in the 90's, if we teach people nothing of use and kill all progress in its root.22
It would seem that Australia just criminalized privacy. The world needs to watch, so this shit isn't repeated elsewhere.2
Australia passes anti-encryption law
More like "Have a backdoor" and please tell us about that. So that we can spy on people keeping on the stake of individual and national security
I still laugh when I see people cover their laptops webcams, like as if Australian internet could hold up someone spying on you through a video stream, at most they would see 4 pink pixels!1
I just found out at my company it is policy to perform random drug and alcohol testing of all employees. I guess this makes some sense for other parts of the business where people use heavy machinery, etc. but they also test office workers.
I don't take drugs and I never drink during the day but I don't want to be tested. I am a professional person and I am trusted with development of our software and valuable internal and client databases so why cant they trust me with this? There are many developers who produce poor quality work even without any drugs, etc. Surely the quality of my work is enough.
Apparently here in Australia if I am asked to take a piss test and refuse they have the right to sack me. If they ask me I think I might resign.25
Coding and refactoring...
METALLICA COMING TO AUSTRALIA 🤘🤘🤘
Forgot what I was doing... But I know what I will be doing next week... GETTING THOSE VIP TICKETS 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘2
Oh fuck, Germany wants to pull an Australia and force services-providers to disclose passwords, password-hashes,... to law enforcement.14
Yesterday Australia Melbourne Metro train had computer fault. Train stopped, door cannot open. What caused it? Someone pushed a bug to the production? Tell me pls2
"The laws of mathematics are very commendable but the only law that applies in Australia is the law of Australia", said Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull today.
Now what the fuck is this? Why would you propose a blanket ban on end-to-end encryption or force companies to build "secure" backdoors? At this rate retarded politicians would make our lives too difficult.
Anyone wanting to get a bundle of steam games + help us Aussies with our Bush fires.
Now's your chance!!
Humble Bundle is donating 100% of purchases of this bundle to Wires, RSPCA and WWF.
Can't wait to get my phone screen repaired so I can finnaly get that inverted panda! :-D
Oh wait I'll never be able to afford to fix the screen because Australia hates hiring IT technicians :-)8
Okay so I’m swiping through tinder for my fellow coding mate and I’m either looking at a porn star or an lg.
Sooooo figures I might as well throw this out here:
Any females? Melbourne Australia??
I’m tired of swiping and I don’t want him to be lonely 😢15
Article 13 is like a nightmare,
already mass surveillance is widespread and getting stronger with new laws (hint Australia),
now freedom to express ourselves is eroding.
A few months passed. Still jobless. I am a php dev btw. In stead of giving up. I made a simple app allows people vote up and down restaurants I Melbourne Australia. https://melres.shopshop.space. I learn a lot about nodejs, react, redux, express, mongo, nginx, Ubuntu. I apply for nodejs job, IT support, DevOps, API job, backend job. All got rejected. Due to experience and competiton. I even ask I can work for DevOps for free. Still no reply. In stead of giving up, I keep learning, doing the thing I love. Focus on learn how to learn. Day in and day out. Hopefully it gets better.5
I feel like I've ranted this before. many times. but here we go again because Australia.
why do people think you can just ban math? like really?! that's what crypto laws do. they require companies to use shitty math. and what prevents me from using the good math? nothing! oh I mean... I won't use it? scouts honor.
you can't ban math.
literally billions of internet users don't fall in your jurisdiction.
no single jurisdiction can cover more than a subset of the internet.
I will use whatever maths I damn well please.
fuck off. please stop making us less safe.

Im curious to know what people's opinions on tech Internships are?
Some people have the option that it's cheap labour to get basic things done.
I believe they are wrong. I just finished my 11 month long internship at a medium size tech company in Melbourne Australia
Although finishing up there was a sad story in itself I was taking some time to reflect on those past months and I believe it's truly amazing.
I've discovered my passions and interests. I was mentored by some truly caring people that honestly gave a shit about me.
The code I write is so much cleaner, decisions I make are more informed and I could go on!
Most of all they paid me decent and I really cannot ask for more.
Kudos to all those companies that actually care about the emerging dev community.2
With the U.K now set to leave the EU my emigration plans to Australia just advanced 10 years #willcodeforvisa
Found this on Facebook... Should I be the one to tell them that apple didn't invent emoji and that the flags are all of countries?
I'm Australian and respect our natives but... Really?14
Because my steam library keeps growing recently, how about you grow yours too And not feel bad about spending your money.

Well that's it folks,
Australia has started to shutdown and become the isolated island it once was again, even more so with states shutting down independently.
Atleast we have the intern -
fuck, got to reboot the modem... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
where was i, oh yea -
internet right? It's not like the NBN wasn't designed to have every fucking Aussie using it at once or anything 🙄
Moved to Australia, because it's cooler over there. Pissing on outback stones right now. Who's your daddy?17
Telstra and Vodafone Australia have released unlimited data plans for mobile.
With a base of40GB for $69/month and 40GB for $60/ month respectively.
When you go over the limit, it then throttles you to 1.5Mbps max.
It's a start, better than charging you heaps for going over, but they still have a way to go...6
You know you are going down a dark rabbit hole when you are thinking about buying the 2019 iPod just so you have an iOS dev device...
(Finding a used iPhone in Australia for less or equal to $300 is just not a possibility)8
Alright! I was getting familiar with Google Analytics!
*visits Google Analytics again*
*the entire fucking thing is redesigned for the nth time*2
Well, fuck this. It seems that politicians are trying their best to validate conspiracy theorists.
This is a German article about the EU Council of Ministers discussing the implementation of backdoors into services in the same way the US and Australia do.
The link will automatically place you at a slideshow, containing images of the proposal's pages. If you can't view it, use Inspect Element to open the JPEGs individually.16
I've deliberately searched a tonne of tech related stuff so my Google feed shows me tech news, but just because I live in Australia in getting bombarded with shit about the royal family.... I don't give a fuck how you pronounce Louis, I just want news!1
Fuckin RAZER. Part 2. "SOLVED!!!"
This will be both a rant and a shout out.
Firslty, fuck RAZER. I don't who in the actual fuck makes the software for these peripherals, but while the hardware is decent the entire software team should be tarred and fucking feathered. Just beaten bloody with a rubber hose. And then publicly paraded and shamed through whatever backwater shithole they call home all while their mothers look on crying their eyes out.
Anyway, some of you may be familiar with my Razer peripherals on Mac saga.
To refresh your memories... I got 4 razer devices for my b-day from my wife. I was very stoked. They work great on Windows 10. They work for shit on Mac and the software to manage their colors, Synergy 3, is not available on Mac, and the version that is, Synergy 2, basically does not work and hasn't worked for like two years and would only work for two of these peripherals anyway and it would appear Razer does not give a shit. Fuck.
Ok, we caught up? Good.
In our last episode I ran up a full Windows 10 VM AND a full Debian VM just so I could jumpstart these god damn peripherals into a solid color.
Why so much work?
Because by default they rotate the color spectum fucking SEPARATELY... so it's just a god awful mess of rando RGB.
So, by running Synergy 3 on the Windows side, and then an open source package called Poloychromatic on the Debian side I was able to patch together preferences through the two programs... and I found quitting out of them hard kept the keyboard, mouse, mousemat, and dock color settings until the next reboot while working on my Mac.
For WEEKS I WENT THROUGH THIS FUCKING PROCESS AT EVERY REBOOT.
Reboot. Run up Windows 10 VM, update Synergy 3, log into Synergy 3, Open Synergy 3, Wait like 90 seconds, Synergy 3 finally fucking gets ahold of my mouse pad, mouse, and dock (not the keyboard).
Run up Debian VM (at least its fast), start polychromatic, set the keyboard solid color.
Then quit them both and my colors are set until reboot.. This is, for lack of a better turn of phrase, the most fucking ridiculous thing ever.
I had to do a 400 fucking megabyte update today for the Synergy 3 software that lives INSIDE my god damn VM. A VM only created in the first damn place to run synergy 3 and then fucking die. And it put me over the edge.
I committed to finding a better way this evening. I started looking into trying to port polychromatic to macOS my god damn self only to find this badass mother fucking kid Ken Chen wrote a whole god damn macOS package and put it up on GitHub.
Fuck fucking YEEEEEESSSS!!!
So thanks to Ken Chen, a student from Australia with 12 Github followers, who was single handedly able to write a better software product than the entire fucking team at SHIT FOR BRAINS fucking Razer.
With the recent attacks by governments and corporations on our freedom, I feel like this is more relevant than ever.
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." (Benjamin Franklin)3
I was reading the news about bushfire in Australia and how half a billion animals died with more to come. I have never felt useless like this, as a computer scientist the only thing I can do is donating some money. I can't actively fight the fire, I can't give medical care to the suffering animals nor can I do something about the shitty government for allowing project Frack.
I wish all the firefighters the best, hopefully the country can recover its nature and wildlife.34
I'm ashamed to call Australia home. The adulterer who voted against same sex marriage because it would endanger the sacred family was elected again. I wish I was living in Saudi Arabia.37
There year is 2019, and down here in Australia we have a fuckup called the NBN (National Broadband Network). We all have to switch to it, from ADSL2. Promised dreams and joys, only to be fucked again and again.
Paying $89 AUD per month for 25mbps, however only getting 0.61mBITSps at times. (Literally can see it at home.danferg.com)
Call up support. "Have you rebooted your router?" Yes. "Have you done a test?" Yes. "Can you send me the screenshot?" No, I did it through the CLI. "... What's a CLI?" Fuck.
"So.. have you got a test?" Yeah, I have 7000 of them, from each minute of the day for the past while. *Silence* "oh.... Ok well, we'll have to see if you qualify for a discount" DISCOUNT?! GIVE ME MY FUCKING MONEY BACK.9
So I ordered a blue yeti mic, mic arm and pop filter, to buy from Amazon Australia (the warehouse is a 2 hour drive from my home) it would have cost me $450 and arrived January 18th, I ordered it from Amazon US and paid 208 that includes shipping and import and it's arrives on the 10th.... Come on Amazon are you fucking serious?!6
As a person from low-paying country, how do I reconcile with the fact that for the same work, and the same 8 hours, I get 1/3 of what a person in Germany does? In my previous team (same company), one of my teammates was from Germany. The same team, the same work, but he happened to earn a lot more.
This bothers me a lot sometimes. I have seen people requesting to be transferred to another country, and being denied, presumably because of the salary difference. Then, the person leaves, and someone in Australia gets hired. So, rather than moving a veteran person of whom you know fits your company culture to a higher-paying country, you let him go and hire a newbie in an equally-expensive country? What the fuckity fuck?
And to my friends from high-paying countries, especially managers: you don't have to feel bad, but have some common decency. If you come to my country, do not say "oh gosh, everything here is so cheap," or "the dinner for the whole team costs less than buying my family of four a dinner back home." That's offensive as fuck. If that's the case, fucking give me a raise you cheap fuck!30
My Chromebook just touched down in Melbourne!
Should be here in the next 2 days, Come on Australia Post don't fail me now! :-D3
im sure this has been done but out of curiosity, what nations/states do we all cover, Im personally from Queensland, Australia.35
These are my stickers, there are many like it, but these are mine!
@dfox thank you for the stickers 👍
Ugh fuck living in Australia trying to buy tech, wanted to treat myself and get a Skagen falser smartwatch. Nope, but we ship to the US...
Always having to pay extra for the same product, pissed me off when people were complaining that $60 is too much for a AAA game and here we are sitting at base of $100.
Can people start realising other countries want tech as well?
Every other Smartwatch other than ticwatch aren't available in Australia, I just want something minimal and with a metal body, fuck companies man -,-5
Well ordered my chromebook plus and it's been stuck at customs for the past 5 days... Thanks America, why can't more places in Australia sell them! :-(2
So the universe is determined to fuck with me for no other reason than the fact that I exist.
I managed to get 2 dates with 2 different girls (obviously) for next weekend.
And now, Australia is going into lockdown: No restaurants and shit.
So far, I am still laughing about the whole situation but now I am faced with either calling it off (which sucks because this lockdown can go for 6 months) or find another way to meet up.
I'm tagging this as a question to see if you guys have any ideas.
As for this fucked up universe... if the parallel MrCSharp is somehow watching me from the parallel universe that has a good 2020 going on at the moment, can you please like take me to your 2020.. that'd be fab.
Oh.. and my office is now fucking closed and forced to work from home. No more gym too..
god fucking damn it...33
In these dark times, it's inspiring to see that a country as insignificant as Australia can demonstrate to us how things can always get worse.
By passing a law mandating that encryption must be broken, in secret (like the US's National Security Letters), at the demand of the Government, the two biggest parties have colluded to destroy Australia's tech sector.
This is the same government that has been whining endlessly about using Huawei LTE equipment in Australian infrastructure "because it might be secretly compromised". Now the same is true of Australian equipment, by law.
My favourite part of all this is how there will be firmware updates for devices sold in Australia, in order to comply with the new law. How well do you think those backdoors will be secured? How thoroughly do you expect them to be tested, given Australia's population of only 25 million?
How can any Australian company expect customers to trust them now?4
Udemy got call out for stealing YouTuber's contents again. Last time was Tory, the guy in charge Australia Microsoft security. (Guess they picked the wrong target)
This time is Chris, who makes some awesome free YouTube Python tutorials.
I'm new to Australia and trying to get a job here. The visa process is sorta complicated, but let me say that you usually start with a Working Holiday Visa (6 months work) and go on from there.
Had an interview the other day. First smalltalk, then coding questions, then hands-on exercises, then I was talking to 3 different people about their experiences in the company. Overall 2 hours plus 3 hours train. The same day I get a email with a positive response and I should send in my papers (passport, Visa etc.) for the contact. I stopped sending out applications at this point.
5 days later (!) I get an email telling me they won't hire me on that visa.
Crushed my motivation for rest of the week 💀3
The fires in australia killed something like half a billion animals, and it's kind of sad, all that potential barbecue going to waste.
We have the means to solve this. With KNAWWWWLEDGE.
What we do is hook up buckets to a bunch of big ass drones and have some sort of contest to see who can put out the most acreage of fire. People will come from all over for the annual "australian fire olympics."
Shit, put a $1 million dollar bounty on "most acreage put out" stream it on twitch, youtube, netflix, you name it.
Fires would be out in a day or three.18
So apple might finnaly offer a MacBook air revision that is under $1000 USD this year... Let's hope it's not too much in Australia and a MacBook air might not be so fucking pointless now!12
So us Aussies are about to literally be forced into using NBN soon (for people who aren't Aussies, NBN would be worse than using a log of shit as your ethernet cable) and having all ADSL connections cut off... Fan fucking tastic!
They can barely keep the NBN up and running for one day and can barely deliver promised speeds but nooooooooooooooooooooo, everyone must fucking use it...3
-----------Jr Dev Fucked by Sr Dev RANT------
Huge data set (300X) that looks like this :
( Primary_key, group_id,100more columns) .
Dataset to be split in records of X sized files such that all primary_key(s) of same group_id has to go in same file.
Sde2 with MS from Australia, 12 years of 'experience' generates an 'algo'. 70% Test case FAILED.
I write a bin packing algo with 100% test case pass, raises pull request to MASTER in < 1 day. Same sde2 does not approve, blocking same day release.
|-_-| What the fuck |-_-| Incompetent people getting 2x my salary with <.5x my work2
So just opened Twitter at work to see Dark souls remastered is a thing... Instantly though "here we go, a $100 rerelease capped at 30FPS on console, oh well still getting it", went to EB games and read the description for the Xbox edition, running at 60FPS and for $60 AUD.... Dear all AAA developers...
THIS IS HOW YOU DO A REMASTER!!!!
Up the frame rate to 60 if previously capped at 30, upgrade textures and charge a reasonable amount for it!
Well done Bandai!3
So once again if you want to buy a Google branded Chromebook and you aren't in the centre of the universe that is America you're shit out of luck...
To get last year's pixelbook that is $999 US in Australia I have to fork out $3000, no word on importing the pixel slate but as always America is the greatest, you get everything and everywhere else can get fucked I guess....
Why can't tech companies just realise that other countries want things too?!6
Just another privacy rant.
I'm sick of people using the excuse "I don't care if Google keeps all my data it's just for adds"
That's true now but if you look at the current trends governments are making to forcing ISP's to store metadata, then it will be the actual data. Eventually they push that to other companises as well.
Now look at Australia for example the police don't need to notify you, let alone get a warrant, to access your metadata. There's also a law in NSW were you can be charged for accociating with a peraon commuting a crime.... Now your in jail for downloading movies years ago that you forgot about but your ISP didn't. I now that's a rather extreme punishment but, Imagine if the government needed some cash so they fine every person that ever downloaded a movie and everyone accociated with person.
Just a crazy theory with poor examplees but just because your data isn't hurting now doesn't mean it won't.
I'm gonna sit in a corner with my tin foil hat now.5
Got sacked with no savings and safety nets like family to rely on. The industry in Australia is fickle at the best of times.. Now I'm well fucked.
How has the pandemic fucked you over, folks?4
"NBN co continue to purchase more copper for their high speed NBN service..."
So what then fuck happened with the fibre and high speed... Oh right you guys are absolutely fucking useless :-D3
So Alex, how excited are you for Google's hardware showcase today?
Well myself, I am waking up at 3 AM (Because got to love living in Australia wanting to watch over seas live streams!) to watch it, then I am going to work at 7 in the morning, I think that should answer your question!
Book a ticket people because the hype train is about to leave the station!8
My last job in Australia before moving to Japan was where I had my best boss. He was pretty chill about a lot of things and he was also a pilot and DJ in his free time. But he was also the no BS type of guy and would help resolve issues in a quick manner.
Also before moving to Japan, I did consult him about it and he was very supportive about it and encouraged me to do the move as it'd be a good experience for me.2
Not sure whether to tag this as a rant or a joke, because it feels like equal parts of both. So fucking disappointed with Australian government.2
So a client (BPOS) asks me to build a website for their client(let's call them A). So BPOS decides to 'design' the site. The design is alright but the components they want does not exist. I need to build everything custom. And the website takes a few months longer than estimated. Mainly because BPOS doesn't do any QA for 3 months. At the end of the last month as we near handoff, BPOS wakes up and starts to do QA which mainly consists of vague information like " change to gray" instead of color codes and "increase font size" instead of the actual size.
By this time A is utterly pissed off and wants to give development to someone else. They get in touch with me directly to work with after the hand off by BPOS.
It's so amusing that I need to be in a KT meeting with BPOS and A when BPOS is pushing for annual maintenance and A doesn't want to give it to them and they keep ignoring BPOS.
ALL the delays are because an "account manager" who works for BPOS went on a trip to Australia.3
When I lived in Australia, I would go out for drinks with co-workers or my university friends that I have kept in touch with anywhere between 2-3 times a month. But having moved to Japan, I don't socialise that much with my co-workers. The main reason is my work hours are different to everyone else, but there's also kind of the language barrier issue.
Although that does mean I have more time to myself to do what I like, meet up with other friends, and try to learn many other things, whether that be dev related or not. And when I meet up with friends who are also devs, I can rant to them about all the crap I deal with at work without hurting anyone's feelings.2
You have two extremes in Australia - latte sipping brunch eating do gooders who live in white suburbs but ardently support multiculturalism (as long the extent of it is only trying new italian coffee or weekend bellydancing classes) or living with white trash where women act like men and men act like animals.
There is no in between43
This is deeply disturbing. Is it the beginning of the end for Net Neutrality? http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/...7
At what point does Telstra saying they are Australia's most reliable and fastest network become a meme?
Think we are long past it...
Guys guys guys,
I'm looking to work in Australia,
Should I find a job then get a work visa, or get the visa, get into Australia, then look for a job.
I'm a computer science student who is finishing up a year long internship tomorrow, based in Melbourne Australia. I'm going into my final year now and have been looking into other software engineering jobs to do alongside studies.
I have been fortunate enough to be offered a full-time position, leaving me with the decision of putting studies on hold (temporarily or indefinitely) in order to take this job, or to decline and continue with my studies.
Wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation or can give some insights into having a degree vs real world experience.
Some additional info:
From my internship I have a year of commercial/industry experience from a large multinational company.
I have 6 units left on my degree (4 in semester 1 and 2 in semester 2).
The job I have been offered has growth potential and job security. The salary offered is also higher than what I expected.
Let me know what you all think.7
This is a rant to myself. I am an international postgraduate student studying in Australia, and after the first year study, I got an internship in a local IT company. That's good indeed, not everyone can get recommendation from the uni, however, I feel so stressful. Because my English skill is not good enough, I hardly used any English before I came to Australia. Thought I have no problem in technical conversation, I often fail to keep up with my local colleagues' daily conversation. Sometimes I have to "Pardon?" for several times, that's embarrassed and makes me frustrated:/
But when I am chating with my local friend, I perform more better. Hmmm... Any suggestion? I really want to improve my English, specially listening skill of understanding what native speakers are saying.4
I rejected a 1 year contract offer because of Corona Virus. Their offer was %60 higher than my current package but Australia is entering a recession and I had my doubts about being able to line up a new job next April because of it... Am I too paranoid?5
Not really a rant, but I love Android!
Go to Settings -> Language and Input -> Language, and change it to English (UK), the answers given by Google assistant will have a British accent. Change it to English (India), Google assistant will have an Indian accent, and the same thing applies for English (Australia) and obviously English (US).
Perfect example of phone adapting to the user!4
I love living in Australia but I may move to Europe just for the sake of fast internet.. come on Aus, mobile 4G in Europe is faster than these connections😞5
Hello to my awesome friends at DevRant! I really wish you all a very happy new year and really hope 2019 brings you the absolute best it has to offer! Well today was quite a great day.
What happened was we have this store here called ‘rebels sport’ which is really all around Australia in general i think, anyways i bought a pair of new slippers which are an absolute beauty.
So i get into line and this happens, i see this pretty young thing who happens to be around my age working in checkout section of the shop.
So i have my slippers in hand and heres the conversation.
First thing i say is:
Me: “Hi, i usually go to the beach “
Her: “you usually go to the beach?” *laughs*
Me:” i mean are these slippers waterproof??”
I Dont think i will be walking into the shop anytime soon 🤣😩
Hope your day/night goes incredibly well! ❤️
End of financial year in Australia

Anyone seeing this rant from Sydney? If yes, why is it so hard to get any IT/Dev jobs for an international student? Sucks.

The client sends us a PSD to refer to. Buys a theme to modify and gives us a time frame.
Stupid client. Their design doesn't even line up with the theme.
We are getting paid peanuts for this.

I'm still working on it, for free.
The liason on the client side goes to Australia for vacation and the content is not being put on the site. They ask for content work too.

Finishing my IT degree at the end of this year, any information/guidance to where I can utilise my degree here in Australia.
I have been applying for alot of Graduate Programs but still feel more inclined to open as many doors as I can to kick start my career. Any feedback appreciated1
SMB/CIFS support on Linux distros is a nightmare! Switching from wired to wireless will cause ALL mounts to freeze, and they all become impossible to dismount normally. You can't even ls the root folder anymore if there are frozen mount folders inside. It's f#&%ing retarded to have to reboot your PC twice a day because you lost WiFi signal for one second, and the underlying processes don't understand SIGTERM. And I could go on about MTP! Standard file transfer protocol for Android but boy it is hellish. Trying to copy a structure with subfolders will take forever because every ls call to the phone is like an API call to some free webhosting company in Australia, takes forever, if it even succeeds. I won't even get started on WebDAV and SSHFS (the latter is even worse than CIFS). Those make me want to do unpleasant things to my computer. So frustrating! I can't be the only one who has experienced this, right?1
Time to burn it in your inner ear...
How can we sleep, when the bed is burning!
The time has come to say fair's fair, to pay our check, to pay our share!
Let's give it baaaaaaack!
Hi everyone, I'm just a bit worried with my future status, I'm currently a Software Engineer here in my home country, I will be going to New Zealand sometime this March. I have a reason why I'm moving to NZ but do you think I can get a Software Engineer job there? I'm 20 and been exposed by my Australian experience (I'm not from Australia btw) from Angular and PHP. I've been trained by my Seniors top notch that they're letting me deploy to-live our largest websites.
Do you think I'll be able to find one or I'll be settling with convenience store related jobs there?
Hey guys I am looking for some career advice
I am currently a Bachelor's student in Melbourne, Australia and I am trying to source a placement (internship) but I have had no success in it

Factory Reset my Nexus 6P, can't get Google Assistant -
So I was using the Android O Dev preview and decided the annoying things in it was just too much so I un-enrolled which reset my device, I'm now on Android N and have been for a week or two, everything's up to date and all but holding the home menu gives me the "Now on tap", I've cleared the Google app and services data/cache, swapped the language to English (US) and rebooted a few times but still nothing.
I'm not rooted and my bootloader is locked, I'm in Australia and had access to Google Assistant without any trickery before...
Not too sure what I'm missing and how to enable Assistant? So freaking annoying not having it and stuff, it was so useful and I miss it3
