Is it just me or the new dark theme on Windows 10 looks really bad?
Too much contrast and bad icons.
Why they didn't used the colors of the really nice looking Visual Studio?26 -
Made a bad pun at work. Collegue:
What about I break this beer bottle *points at it*, stick it in your throat and put it up your ass sideways afterwards?
Me: 😅 I'll stop 😅

Subtle irony:
Tons of people rant about how bad PHP is on devRant.
devRant's is built using PHP.
Love it4 -

If it were a bridge it would kill hunderds of people.

It is so bad,

I used to love apt because all I knew was windows.
Now I hate apt because I know pacman/yaourt.
It's funny how perspective does that.7 -
The best part about being a teaching assistant in programming is the ability to bitch about bad code.
The worst part is all the bad code...2 -
This girl I don't even know much sent me this code. She is not a coder and has never written any code before by the way.

"private is evil" or "static is bad" being thrown around without even thinking.
They're both a solid 14 out of 10 on my wtf scale.7 -
Windows is so bad, their users are actually upset instead of happy with every new software update. What kind of masochistic shit is this?12
-
After a long day of wrestling with some bad code and getting it to 'work' leaves me feeling dev angst. Then on my way home I see some minor bug in a phone app I'm using and I think to myself, "MY GOD.. all software is made out of SUFFERING."
Behind every tiny defect out there lays some poor soul's looong hours of overtime, stress, tears, alcoholism, and stale popcorn dinners. -
!rant
My colleague saw this code of mine and said it is annoying conditions are not on the same line, since it is a shared project I can't go "that's my style!"
What do you think should I convince him why we need to follow this approach (at least it can be easily read rather than reading a screen wide line)26 -
You don’t hate X, you hate the word “X” because of a single bad experience with it on an early stage of your path.
You don’t know X because you banned it early and never learned it. The only thing you see is its bad part. Everything has its bad part.
The fact that X has bad apologists doesn’t mean that X itself is bad18 -
i don't know graphql

Azure is a big pile of shit.
Fuck you Microsoft. The only thing they are good at is consisently making bad things.19 -
This rant is not about avoiding bad company but instead: If you find your self in a bad company make sure to note what is bad in terms of:
1. What is wrong?
2. Is it wrong by your book or by everyone's book?
3. How things should be done if you were in charge?
4. Are you able to be productive if those "wrong" things where done correctly? For example if they should have used gitlab cli for auto deployment, do you know how to do that? No? Learn. Yes? Move to the next item in the list
There is no way to avoid bad companies unless you are really lucky, just make the best out of where you are now :)2 -
Reads horrible code
Opens DevRant to rant about it
Reads some stories
Ok, better mood, I can continue working now.
What was my planned rant about again? Ah, it can't be that bad.
Goes back to the code: Oh no, it is that bad...1 -
I have a power nap after lunch. No matter what. Waking up from a nap is like getting a new extra day for free. And this time whatever was bad before the nap just doesn't seem so bad anymore.7
-
So normally I go with a super-conservative error handler that logs errors, and exit the process on even the tinyest/smallest error.
Regardless or project/cms/framework I always to this to prevent myself from installing spaghetti plugins or writing unstable code.
Also because I don't want any code to just soldier on if a variable wasn't defined properly, or likewise.
But today I had to write this little fucker into my error handler, to support the error surpressing operator '@'
Appearently prestashop was developed by a group of senseless moronic fuckwits,
and hteir piece of horseshit software doesn't even work if it isn't allowed to surpress errors.
What was the fucking imbeciles thinking when requiring such lunatic behaviour... -
Electron devs: You know that this is the difference between a good looking and bad looking MacOS Electron app.
-
I legit had an interview once where he said
"Ok next question. Static variables...are they good or are they bad"
The funny thing is I can totally relate to working with someone who thinks static variables are bad but it's sad to see this is how far we have fallen.7 -
My work computer is currently so slow, I actually have a legitimate reason for browsing devRant.
Is that good or bad?2 -
Had a bad day at work :( They gave me this code for some obscure streaming job and asked me to complete it. Only after 3 days did I realize that the LLD given to me was incorrect as the data model was updated. Another 2 more days, I was able to debug the code and run it successfully— I was able to parse the tables and generate the required frame but not able to stream it back to the output topic as per the LLD. That’s where I needed help but none of my emails/messages were replied to. The main guy who is pretty technical scheduled a code review session with me— I expected that I would run the code and he would spot it something I might’ve missed and why my streaming function isn’t working. Instead, what happened was that he grilled me on each and every line of the code (which had some obscure tables queried) and then got super mad at me saying “Why are we having this code review session if your code is not complete?”. I’m like bruh, you asked for it, and yes, the main parsing logic is done and I’m just having this issue in the last part. And he’s like “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”. Wtf?! I left at least 5 emails and a dozen messages. He’s like this has to go live on Monday, and I’m like Ok, I’ll work in the weekend. And he’s like “Don’t tell me all these things! You’re not doing me a favor by working on weekends! How am I to ask my colleagues to connect with you separately on Saturday/Sunday? You should have done the on the weekdays itself. What were you doing this whole week?”. Bruh, I was running the code multiple times and debugging it using print statements. All while you were ignoring my attempts to reach out to you. SMH 🤦♂️ I can go on and on about this whole saga.4

Bad day is when you accidentally click OK button on a dialog with label "Set Internet Explorer as default browser"1

My first job and the amount of bad code I had to work with influenced my coding style a lot.
One thing is reading about bad examples. Another thing is it to maintain these bad examples.3 -

Bad: Delete your production database
Good: Have a backup
Bad: Can't reimport it because your backup procedure uses scheme that are no longer supported for import by your cloud provider
Good: Backup are plaintext and somehow easy to parse
Bad: Spending the rest of the day writing scripts to reinsert everything.
End of the story: everything is up and running, 8hours of efforts1 -
Our teacher is forcing us to code in an outdated version of a really bad IDE to write basic C, we can't use anything else!
The IDE is bad and crashes often, and I can't even do anything about it!
I suggested various IDE such as visual studios but nope!10 -

Agile coach Agiling: We shouldn't need code reviews as long as there is pair programming.
Me Internally: bad code + bad code doesn't make good code :( -
Legit question: Why are there so many people coding in javascript while so many people are saying it is actually a bad language? Why is everybody coding in a "bad" language?11
-
Does devRant really need a downvote button? I mean if a post is offensive just report it. I don't really see someone saying a post is bad. If a post is bad I just ignore it.9
-
So PHP 7.2 according to its creator, is actually faster if you write bad code.
Well im not amused.5 -
is it a bad thing you hear your uni's sysadmins sing Aqours' Aozora Jumping Heart in the cringiest way possible?3

wtf boss!!!! Is it so hard to understand that having one column per year is a horrible bad practice?9

So, I was fixing some code today, and stumbled upon this. Is it just me, or is this really an example of bad bad practice...? And, no, there was nothing to be executed after this function was called.6

If your customer service is so bad that people talk about trying to use the occult to get in touch with you, your company is shit.
Dev related cause I only want to talk to the customer service because the api docs are that fucking bad. -
Okay so this question is directed towards anyone with SQL experience. Is MySQL bad to start and bad for beginners? It seems intimidating if Im being honest. and Im confused on how to set everything up and get started and working with SQL and Databases in general15

"The designer is not always right. The researcher is not always wrong. Profit is not always the motive; market research, whatever its outcome, should never be used as a good excuse for bad design – in the same sense that good design should never be used to promote a bad product." - Paul Rand1

(Surprisingly) unpopular opinion: Multiple inheritance is a bad design practice and should not be used.16

Never got a bad experience. The only bad part I could think of is I'm the youngest and always solo coding all the time. It's pretty fun tho.

How good was you saying that the backup function was? Maybe I should remember saving my work more often ...2

Code review moment that I hate
Me: This is a bad practice. You shouldn't do this
Developer: But it works
*Showed articles and examples why it's bad*
Developer: I see. But it works. Why should I change it?2 -
I think what's worse than bad coding is bad network connection. Can't load StackOverflow, Network Assets, Run Reports, or pull updated repositories because somebody is hogging up the bandwidth. FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU
-
okay just had a mind blown moment.
there are never 'technical errors'
everything is human error.
because at some point, a human started/caused whatever went wrong.
whether it was the fact that a human didn't account for something or made bad code, or made bad hardware,
every tech issue is a human one.
:/4 -
How is the shopify developer experience actually so bad.
Shopify Buy JS docs suck
Product ID's are inconsistent

my life is looking up, everything seems neat. what happens to my anxiety disorder? well, now I'm anxious because i feel like i forgot something bad, or like something bad is supposed to be happening. ffs someone trade brains with me pls4

I'd like to propose that we pivot the saying "there are no bad ideas" into " it's okay to have bad ideas".
Having worked with web frontends the last couple of years I can confirm with reasonable certainty that there are indeed several bad ideas, and "no bad ideas" is not a veto that will make me implement a 3d carousel calendar. -
Not gonna lie; having both != == and !== and === in JavaScript is one of the most stupid bad design moments; in my opinion.
I am not even going to bother trying to come up with a better syntax for that. I will never get over how bad it is. So bad. === is 🤡8 -
The bad thing about high turnover is being forced to remind people constantly that you don’t like physical contact.6

For me is the same Friday than Monday. I do not know if it is good or bad. Maybe it is good because I do not hate my job or bad because I do not make so much fun on weekends. 😗😗

Fixing a bug under Drupal 8 has a bright and an other bad side
The bad sight is that you slowly get insane trying to fix a bug.
The bright side is that you get to see the lead the lead dev, who assigned you this bug, to get insane too 😁 -
A friend of mine has been searching for a job for 3 months, he finally got one, signed a contract and started 2 weeks ago. Now he got an offer from a company he applied to, completed an interview and was abandoned and they want to pay 3x more than the present job. This is bad luck. Bad, bad luck3

Is it good time to switch to CSS Grid Layout frameworks such as Blueprint CSS? How is good/bad as compared to Flexbox?6

Holy shit, Kotlin does not have package-private?! I thought Kotlin was just a bad mix of JS syntax and Java... but not supporting an essential feature of the VM is on a whole another level of bad.8

I’ve been on devRant for a very short period of time and I’ve seen too many posts about PHP fucking people in the ass.
Is it really that bad?(I’m an embedded systems geek so don’t ask me why I don’t know anything about PHP)18 -
Social media is bad for your self image. When you look at LinkedIn, everybody is making super cool applications and sites everybody just loves!
My work is more of a collection of bad designs intended to inspire more belief in the oncoming failcascade that is the next client's marketing brainfart hoping for happenstance but being shattered on the impervious anvil of shattered hopes and dreams.
It's a shitshow, but at least I get to press all the buttons to advance the stupid plot of a bad comedy.1 -
Today I saw how the frontend devs on my team write Vue components + TypeScript. It's bad and it further proves that Vue=bad. Not even TypeScript can save it from being bad. Function defineComponent is ugly5

Why does MySQL call databases schemes? Makes absolutely no sense.
Schema is the metadata around your tables or documents. What is Json Schema? Metadata around a json object.
MySQL, databases contain data. Schemes do not! Bad DB technology. Bad...2 -
Son: Dad jokes are just bad.
Me: That is why they are called "bad jokes".
Son: I hate you...
Me: I know.1 -
Which of the two jobs is better for a frontend Dev:
1. React project, stressful, bad communication, depending on bad internal libraries
2. WordPress theme building, higher paid, promising startup with stock options8 -

Wow. Fucking wow. My CPU is an i7 6700K on 4.5GHz. What's this process doing that any single fucking core is on 100% load?!?! After killing these two the CPU load is on ~5%. WTF
(ik it's only on 59% load on the screenshot but it's going from there to 100%)8 -
I don't think that anyone in Australia ever said anything nice about telstra!
For people who don't know what telstra is, it's a mobile provider6 -
There is no good choice.
There are bad choices but if you carefully evaluate based on the context, you can choose the least bad decisions.
At least this is what I feel when I check my own code from the past.2 -
Being flexible and interested is not a bad sign make this right

Hey.com is super cool and really fast. Too bad the Apple problem has become a sizeable barrier. This is a "fuck you Apple!" situation 😐2

Why oh why do devRant have this crappy webApp. Ranting about bad Software and code on a such a bad app is like complaining about speed on a rail trolley.6

Apparently Vue.js developers invented their own markup language which is neither HTML nor JavaScript, following their own special convoluted logic, using the most indirect approaches whenever possible and all the characters available on the keyboard {{#@.:;$-}}
Bad framework is bad...4 -
So I'm sitting here trying to bodge my way through a member system. These fucknuts really made a bad system..
The task: Export a list of users and their info.
Is there an API available? No, who the fuck would need that shit, even tho the system is built upon Odoo, which has an API!
But it has an export function, you just have to log in and press the right sequence of buttons, because you need the running ID...
Here I discovered the first of many security flaws... "What happens if I post the wrong ID?"... Well, I get access to a file that has nothing to do with me or my users.... What?
Well after some fiddling It works, but holy fuck I found a lot of bugs. And this is a system that is launching in 7 days for us.. Some users have been on it for a year....
How can they ship this bad a product? There's absolute no documentation only a 15-page manual. Guess they don't want developers to develop shit that works in junction with theirs.1 -
Swift versioning is a really shitty bit. But not as bad the unreadable mashed together bastardized horseshit that is objective-c

We use AngularJS for widgets, planning a migration to Angular. AngularJS is shit. How bad is Angular?4

Does anyone know if there's a list or something with examples of bad variable names? As in ones that shouldn't be used because they're already used namespaces and such?
It would be awfully convenient in situations where you're not sure if it's an okay name or not. :/ -
I have two potential offers. A is too good (pay, hours, stability, perks). B is decent (good pay but not so stable, no idea on perks but the work seems cool). Despite better work I'm not inclined to go for B. It is from my previous interview experience rant. People seem shitty, or at least as bad as the ones I'm leaving.
I don't wanna accept A either because they are expecting a longer stay and right now I'm in a state where I don't want to commit more than 6-7 months to anything. 😞
But I don't have any other offers and there aren't any short term projects coming up in my search.
Ugh.11 -
Am I the only to have bad mojo with Android 7? It loses 4g network all the time, restarts, is generally slow... It's like they follow the Microsoft release model, one version stable (4), next one buggy and bad (5), then nice again (6), and now bad (7)...
