My thoughts on programming:
As a child:
It is 100% magic
As a developer:
It is 65% if/else statements, 34% iterating an array, 1% actual amazing and unique code17 -
Do you guys feel a need to create something "cool" and "unique" but have a hard time coming up with ideas?4

What kind of music from video games has stuck in your head?
For me it was nearly all music from American McGee's Alice(because that OST is absolutely unique), Bumby's Office from Alice: Madness Returns, along with some other music, Crysis 2 Theme(it stuck in my head for at least a month after having beaten it), some songs from Still Life, the theme for Ori and the Blind Forest, Halo Theme(of course), and others I just cannot remember...48 -
Unpopular opinion:
The "I hate everyone" mentality doesn't make you quirky or unique, it likely just means you're a real pain in the ass to deal with and/or have the social skills of a rock.
My name's Stux, and thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.40 -
Client: We need to add a field to the model that serves as a unique identifier
Dev: You already have one, it’s the _id property
Client: We want another! This one is for a task number so we can make a connection between the database record and our ERP.
Dev: Ah I see. I can add that for you. Is this truly a unique identifier or will you be using the same ERP identifier for multiple database records?
Client: I already said it’s a unique identifier. One ERP record to one database record, end of story! To do otherwise would be absolutely ridiculous! You should think for yourself before you ask silly questions.
Dev: My apologies I just want to make sure to clarify exactly what the requirements are.
**6 months later**
Client: HOW COME I CAN’T ASSIGN THE SAME UNIQUE IDENTIFIER TO MULTIPLE DATABASE RECORDS??? CAN’T PROGRAMMERS GET ANYTHING RIGHT EVER??
Dev: …14 -

!rant.
I said I'd do a thanks rant when I reached 50K. Yeah forgot about that one. Then said to myself that I'd do one when I received the devDuck. Well, that failed.
Tomorrow. I'm gathering up ideas now to make a very special/unique thankish rant.
Literally planning stuff for an hour now and writing stuffs down :)
This is gonna be fun!17 -
DevRant feels a lot like home. Not because I'm a pro developer - I'll probably never be one. But because I get to spend time with "my people". It's like when I went to Dreamhack for work and after 30+ years of being weird there were suddenly over four thousand people just like me.
There is no shortage of online IT culture but devRant is unique. It could have become the usual cesspool of hate, misogony, trolling but hasn't. Somehow it gives me hope to se a place meant for blowing of steam turning out to be one of the more respectful communities. So - thanks people! Your rants actually make my days a little better.12 -

It's so fuckin hard to work with people who don't get sarcasm or humour.
The UI guy gives me design (which is a regular design, not something unique)
Me: “wow fresh and unique design (obviously sarcasm).”
Designer: “thanks, I worked on this whole day. Glad you like it.”
Me: “huh...”
Now I feel like a terrible person.6 -

If you comment shit like "mUsIc ToDaY iS gArBaGe" and "iM fRoM tHe WrOnG gEnErAtIoN" on YouTube, you deserve to have whatever rights you're given stripped from you.
We live in the most technically advanced time the world has ever seen. We have music available 24/7 from literally all over the world. So shut the fuck up and listen to your preference. Nobody holds a gun to your head and makes you listen to today's music. Don't like it? Don't listen.
It's not brain surgery and this doesn't make you unique or quirky as much as you want it to, nor is it a personality trait.12 -

A client was talking to me all day asking about my "hacking" experience.
I taught he was going to ask for a pen test for his trampoline website. At the end of the day, he revealed he wanted me to hack the "competition's databases" so he can promote his "very unique trampoline accessory".
Guess what happened? Nothing, cause fuck legal trouble!7 -
Working on a database priorly designed and maintained by some private agency.
The fuck I'm dealing with!
Boolean values stored as 'TRUE'/'FALSE'. It's varchar, my dudes.
There are no FK relations. Just the values of IDs in a column.
There are no indexes, all on just the PKs, nothing else. Nothing.
Null, what's that? I'm dealing with 'N/A', my dudes.
Unique key, what's that? The table which stores users has all the fields nullable. Email is not unique ( even though that's the required behaviour).
ALL the numeric values are stored as varchar. Varchar, my dudes. Varchar. '1', '1.1'
And finally, the good ole, 1 table to rule them all. Normalisation, fuck that.
And what's the root cause of all this? My PM used to hand them Excel sheets she maintains on her local system. FTW. I don't have a enough explanations.7 -
Have you read the devRant update? @dfox and @trogus have done an amazing job of building a great community, keeping us informed of upcoming features AND asking for our input.
The upcoming features are 10x.
I can't wait for the store to open. Please tell me killer polo shirts and unique gifts just for devs make in before the holidays. Sending my wife up to buy me stuff.
All I can say is thanks to the devRant team and all of the community for the informative, funny and get it off my chest rants. I start and end my day with devRant and enjoy every rant.2 -
Finally thought I had a good project idea.
It's already been done and is a large site. 200k users.
WHY CAN'T I JUST COME UP WITH SOMETHING UNIQUE FOR ONCE?15 -
I'm leaving my job.
That had already been decided when I learned that the only other front end guy at the company put in his two weeks notice. I immediately decided that I was morally obligated to put in my 4 months notice to give the company enough time to find a replacement (because, contrary to the beliefs of some programmers, front end plays a critical role in web dev).
With only 2 weeks left, I was put on his project to do some "simple design work".
Jesus christ in heaven alive and dead...
I've never in my career seen CSS with such an intense level of specificity -- nobody on that team should have ever let that code get so out of control.
I've spent the past week cursing, walking out of the room, whispering "I can't believe you've done this", ranting to non-developer friends.
Here's an example: the application has a panel used all over the place with a header and a body. Every Single View has it's own duplicated panel, each with its own unique class names and CSS. And that's just one element.
Every view has hundreds of lines of duplicated CSS. Every button, link, list, all with unique styles.
To any junior developer reading this, please hear me: Write one block of CSS for any element that will be reused. DO NOT duplicate your code when it can be used over and over.

Russian Roulette - Developer Edition:
Have a random generator for a number between zero and one hundred. Every developer present picks a unique number.

Git, Bitcoin, actually getting paid for writing PySnek.. What the fuck is this doing in my feed?
1. How the fuck are Git and Bitcoin related?
2. What the fuck makes you think that open source and getting paid don't usually go together, as if that makes your product unique?

Me: ya hi, we integrated with your API and I'm receiving error x
Provider: ok we'll disable validation, plz check
Me: ya it works, what's the problem? I used a GUID for id and I'm sure it's unique, here is URL and request body
Provider: you have something wrong in your implementation. Fix it and it will work
Me: aaand what's the wrong part of my implementation?
Provider: id is not unique, fix it. *Hangs up*
I sometimes sit and wonder, how and why does this kind of people get hired, FOR FUCK SAKE YOU ARE THE PROVIDER AND YOU DONT KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG!

To all developers,
Please stop making web applications where ALL state is saved in cookies. If I make a search and select a result, why the hell are the search parameters not in the address bar, but rather in a bloody cookie, and why when I select a result is this page not identified by a unique address? Rather saved in a COOKIE. This makes having multiple tabs open pretty useless.4 -
I had a professor in college who was "the expert in java programming language". He had a unique way of teaching.
P: So you save your java file and run this command.
*Some error occurs*
Me: But this is showing some error
P: Exactly. I wanted to show this exact same error so that you learn that this is not how its done. I will let you figure it out how its done and it will be your assignment for the day. Class dismissed.4 -
Not only do I write software, but now I help the managers view and understand our analytics, just like in kindergarten.
Now I'm forced to help them essentially fake data so investors are satisfied 🤡🔫
"Delete metrics X, Y, and Z for now, we don't want anyone to see them!"
"Change the label of this metric to 'unique user' views! (not total!)"
"Set all charts to cumulative so it looks like they are all up and to the right!"
Sigh.

You are all beautiful people. Thank you for your unique mix of talents to make for a variety filled platform. I have come to appreciate different parts of the industry due to exposure on this site. Recently, one of our passwords was accidently published on a public page for a few minutes before it was noticed and removed. Unfortunately, this password opens nearly every locked account so it's a pretty big deal.
Management was informed of this mistake and told that we should change the passwords as well as implement a few other protocols to make sure this doesn't happen again including things like unique passwords, more secure passwords, using a password manager, etc.
Their response? It wasn't online long, probably no one saw it. There will be no changes in how we handle ours or our clients' secure passwords.6 -

So here I am, skrewing around with the Google Authenticator app and the dodgiest base32 code generator I've ever built and generating a 56 char unique ID, and a 8 digit time based code.
WTF, all these products, services and logins that use 6 digit codes... and this fucking thing can handle 8 without breaking 😑
Now... to hook it into a QR code class... and spit out an image I can actually scan, without calling google charts api.
I can't say I've written one of those before 🙃6 -
A client of mine who has a competitor that launched android app this January. Now my client wants me to clone the app to her companies branding. I told her that's it's the best idea to make something unique and gives different experience to the user. She started arguing with me for shitty reason.
So I agreed to work on the app.
PS: She is beautiful, I will bang her for sure someday. She is the one who will take my virginity.11 -
Just found a humongous bug in production. The customer relation number, which should have been unique was shared by ten customers.
So instead of 400,000 relation numbers we only had 40,000 unique numbers.
The system is live for 3 weeks now, and we just fixed it on a friday at 5:30PM
If we had found out a week later every customer would have gotten a plastic card with the wrong number, because the cards will be printed in four days...8 -
Ugh I'm getting so owned. Currently having a burst DDOS on a host of ours. It is always at xx:00 and xx:30 for ~2 minutes from ~200++ unique AWS instances (Ip's).
Not long enough to ban them (max 2-3 requests per IP), not general enough to ban them on the type of request.. and the IP's.. yea... It would result banning all the amazon subnets which is also not an option lol.
Now waiting I guess.. I sent an email to amazon5 -
Episode 2 of this rant: https://devrant.io/rants/851636/...
PM went to meet with the provider and came back, so I had a talk with the PM and it went like this:
Me: so how did the meeting go? Hope they corporate with you
PM: *in a sarcastic voice* Bro, you need be a good dev, they told me only a good dev can implement Master Card API calls, and its all in the docs. That's all they told me, so you should know how the meeting went
Me: *there is no wifi in jail, there is no wifi in jail, there is no wifi in jail, there is no wifi in jail* Fine bro, I'll go back to school and come back after 12 years.
Seriously when I send the provider the request and the body and all they tell me is: You have an error, Id must be unique but they fail to point out the exact error or at least send me a valid ID to test, how does this make me the bad dev and him the genius that can run Apple, Google, MS all together at once!
What is even worse, when I called the provider he told me: Man transaction ID must always be unique, how could you not know this, how is Mastercard supposed to differentiate between transactions!!
But hey, no one told me transaction id must be unique, primary keys are never unique, like DUH!10 -
TL;DR
This works: email+rant@domain.com
Spam filtering protip:
Did you know that the email spec allows you to use youremail+something@domain.com and the emails still come to you. This is especially useful when registering to a lot of places where you are not sure whether they will spam you or not. Filtering will be easy because you have a unique email address for each service. Also you can find out which service leaked your email address to spammers.
Additionally if you want to register to a service with two accounts but still want to use the same email, you can do this easily by adding +whatever in your email address.6 -

I shaved half my beard off. I just had a meeting with a recruiter and he told me I might get problems with upper management (CEOs for example) in Switzerland because they are still very conservative and they'll be interviewing me. Why would that matter!? Either I get the job done or I don't, why the hell does it make a difference if I like to stick out in a crowd with a unique cool beard!?18

I heard about this in a Hackathon.
The guy wanted to create a unique and universal username for every human.
I don't think it's feasible.
Thoughts?46 -
Ok, so our team is responsible for writing an app that consumes an API written by the client's team (I refuse to call it a "REST" API, despite their claims). On one of the clarification meetings we are discussing an endpoint that accepts a (logically) unique field multiple times, even though an entity is already registered in the system with that unique identifier. Our proposal would be that this API of theirs should not happily accept duplicates as many times as there are bits on a 4TB hard drive, rather it should signal an error.
The response we got is this: Due to the Separation of Concerns principle they thought that it should be our app's responsibility to not send a request if an entity with said field is already in the system. Thus there's no need for the backend to validate this.
I didn't hear the next part, because I had to collect my headphones from the other side of the room where they were flung in rage.11 -
I just had the most surreal email discussion I think I've ever had...
I spent over two hours going back-and-forth over email with an enterprise DBA, trying to convince them I needed a primary key for a table. They created the table without a primary key (or any unique constraints... or indexes... but that's another discussion). I asked them to add one. Then had to justify why.
If you ever find yourself justifying why you need a primary key on a table in an RDBMS, that's the day you find yourself asking "is this real life?"
I want the last two hours of my life back. And a handful of Advil.1 -
I really wish i was a good designer. Id love to put together attractive frontends with cool and unique ideas.
I also wish i wasnt colorblind.3 -
I try and try and try to teach my coworker critical thinking skills, proper programming techniques, and standard git etiquette. Then I add 4 booleans to solve one problem, use strings instead of ints to find unique SQL Server entities, and push right to the development branch.
I am a real asshole, but at least I am not fake.4 -
Don't you just love it when you ask Hibernate to fetch some data from DB and it does that for you.?And also updates a few more tables on its way. And inserts a few more rows. And updates another couple of fields..
Isn't that just amazing? I mean.. What could be more satisfying than getting an "ORA-00001: unique constraint (some.constraint) violated" while issuing a FUCKING **GET** METHOD?5 -

I am very frustrated today and I do not know where to "scream" so I will post this here since I believe you will know how I feel.
Here's the case...
I am developing an e-commerce web application where we sell industrial parts. So my boss told me on March that when we are going to show these parts, we should not show Part Number to visitors because they will steal our information.
Ok, this makes sense but there was a problem.
The Primary Key for these products in our internal system is a string which is the Part Number itself.
I told him on March that we have to come up with another unique number for all the products that we are selling, so this unique number will be the primary key, not the Part Number. This will be best because I will be dependent from the original Part Number itself. And in every meeting he said "That is not priority". So I kept developing the part using the original Part Number as primary key and hid is from the web app. (But the Part Number still shows on URL or on search because this is how my boss designed the app.)
I built the app and is on a test server. Until one of out employees asked my boss: "There is no unique number or Part Number. How are the clients going to reference these parts? If a client buys 20 products and one of those has a problem, how is he going to tell us which products has a problem?"
My boss did not know what to say, and later said to me that I was right and primary key was priority.
I really hate when a guy that knows shit from developing does not listen to suggestions given by developers.
FUCK MY LIFE!
I'm sorry if you did not understand anything.5 -
Issue reporter:
Feed from external service provider is overwriting the wrong things, pls fix
Resolution:
Service provider is sending duplicate unique IDs, you need to get with them to discuss
Service provider response:
This is a *RE-USABLE UNIQUE ID* . . . The bottom line is you should not use this UNIQUE ID as a primary key.21 -

There is to much hate in the world already without hating on Windows because you are a Linux user, or vice Versa.
All I'm reading is windows is shit! Linux is for supreme devs.

Once again, answered my own question in stack overflow. That my problems are so unique, it makes me lonely even in a dev forum.2

Customer: I need a one page website, which must have an administration panel , so I can change and add new sections. I will also have designed a unique logo and a unique web design. I think you can do it in 5-10 hours , so I'll give you $ 50 and $ 100
Me: ehmmm... I need more time if it is to be unique , and one hour cost of $ 5- $ 10 is not enough.

Fucking A.I. resume filter bots.
As if tech interviews weren't hard enough, I have to fill my resume with keywords to get past a bot! Every damn application and cover letter has to be unique.
And when I get past a bot, a hiring manager replies with "Sorry, you seem to have more experience with Typescript than JavaScript, and we can't take that risk."
It's the same.damn.language.

I envy how many programmers can come with really cool unique names for their projects and i am here using random name generators and other stuff struggling for hours or even days just to know it's used for another unrelated project.4
-
Sometimes it's uncomfortable for me to code anything because all I do is based on other stuff that is based on other stuff and so on.
Am I truly a creator when all I do is putting the puzzle pieces together so it looks unique?
I actually never honestly go beyond "modding".. Why do I always have to rely on other stuff working? And other stuff continuing to work for the following decade?
I thought it's only the case for software/web/etc but apparently most hardware projects are stuffing bought things together.
Music is stuffing chord combinations and melodies together.
It all goes on like that. -
Hands down, my favorite part being a dev the HUGE range of industries I can apply my craft to.
In 10 years, I've bounced from structural engineering, to vision accessibility, to healthcare, to eCommerce. All from the comfort of my developer's keyboard.
While this isn't necessarily unique to the dev role, it's the spice of life that keeps my mind to young.2 -
The best part of being dev is the community, its also the most unique one IMHO. I mean what other profession in the Whole Wide World has such great and ingrained culture of helping eachother and sharing knowledge ?1

People talk about how the use of Linux as a desktop requires an inordinate amount of time, as if that's a unique problem in Linux. There is no such thing as an operating system that I don't spend weeks and months tweaking to make my own.

It's funny to think that in a world where we keep telling ourselves that each of us are unique, we are always forced to follow societal norms. And I'm not just talking about stuff like sexuality, even people with small quirks have to bend themselves in order to be accepted by the masses...3 -
Wtf? What kind of user agent header is that? Why don't you go ahead and insert my fucking social security number in there, Android? According to amiunique, this is literally a unique header ON ITS OWN.7

So today my pr needed approval. One of the lines of code created a unique ID using the uuid4 functionality.
I got a reject saying I didn't handle a case where I would get the same uuid twice.
Well, I guess it would be the problem of the developer working on my code in a couple thousands of years 🤷♂️2 -
I'm kinda insecure about my main focus being web stuff. I'm pretty good at it and it comes naturally - and more importantly, there are tons of web jobs. But I've always wanted to do something more unique and interesting, you know? I don't wanna introduce myself as web developer.3
-
I want honest opinions. Do you think the following is a good or not so good interview question. Why or why not? Defend your argument.
Define a function where the input is a list of integers. It should find and return all the unique sets of three within the list that sum to x.
For example, given the list [1, 3, 2, 5, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15] and with x = 16, the function would return [(10,5,1), (13,2,1)]
If the candidate presents the trivial solution with time complexity of o(n^3), ask if can be done in o(n^2) or better.7 -
YOU DENSE MOTHERFUCKER!
If anyone read my last rant, I talked about how I wanted to buy a new phone with a subscription line, but they didn't allow me because "the system says you already have one and you're over due with the payments"
FUCKING MORONS, I don't know who coded the system but I will find you and bury your head in your own shit!
They use people's RFC (Mexican Tax ID number) to create an "account" and allow buying a phone. The ID it's composed by:
NNNNYYMMDDXXX
Where N are letters from our name, then they use our birthdate's year, month and day, finally they generate three unique characters to avoid ID clashes.
Well, this stupid fucker who coded the system thought it was OKAY TO STORE ALL BUT THE CHARACTERS THAT MAKE THE ID UNIQUE.
Fucking fucker...what were you thinking?2 -
Management: Our internal app must be 100% rigid so that we users follow predefined process flows exactly so no mistakes are made while also being 100% flexible so that users are free to go about their business in whatever way they feel is appropriate for their own unique needs. These are the requirements!

Fuck you Mozilla. You have killed the major unique selling point of FF, that being the add-ons, and replaced them with web extensions that will never even come close. Not enough with that, now you're killing the add-on servers to also kick FF forks into their balls. There is this company that saves your information, before you have even registered.
If you merely fill in a field, they will save it to their database. Not even saving/submitting it, just filling it in.
So when you then visit their store, they already know stuff about you (if you gave enough unique identifiers, like phonenumber or email adress) and recommend stuff based on your browsing of their website5 -
I published an app on Google Play on Sunday and since then I received a number of emails from 6 unique companies that want me to promote the app using their services (excluding reminders they send for me to get back to them). I understand that some people make a living out of this marketing but stop flooding my inbox with this crap!5

Not anti-man, curious about this particular problem:
Females have unique problems in the workplace and personal life yes, because of stereotypes.
I agree, I am a female. But when i read those articles about what we really go through, I really feel weak. I think if these many obstacles are present how am I supposed to do something without instinctively being influenced by the society.
It really felt better when I consider myself human not female.
What do you people do when you feel weakened by these impositions?9 -
I'm really curious about how many people use the light and black theme in devRant (I'll call the default dark one dark, the pro one black)

My guess is 5% Light, 85% Dark, 10% Black Theme.15 -
From the only tech guy (after co worker left) at my old job to 'the new guy' at my new job
Its a fucking flip lol
But at least I'm not dealing with a terrible ceo and growth
Day 3 and they're already trusting me with stuff and not treating me like a child even though I'm asking a million questions
And they're already discussing how I can use my actual background experience to do new unique things for the department rather than just bogging me down with instructions and "do it this way"2 -
At my last gig, part of our business process was to generate a unique human-readable ID that could tie an individual to our product and service. Well, we had a few rather superstitious, paranoid and vocal customers who felt 'uneasy' when they received their unique ID with 666 in it.
So after having a good laugh and roll on the floor, I got to write an exorciseUniqueId() method that compelled the evil numbers to stop possessing those innocent IDs!4 -
I find it so unbelievably satisfying to see trend patterns in the client launches from the user's that use my mod. Basically, every week the number of people using it grow, but it keeps the same rhythm.
Sunday most people of the week, Monday least people of the week; then building up to Sunday every day a little more. BUT then there's Thursday where a few people are taking an early night or something.
I guess the satisfying part is just that, however, how random and unique everyone thinks that they are. In a crowd - everyone together - shows a lot of patterns and similarities.1 -

The system I'm developing is depending on an image generating application, that is generating thousands of unique images per day. The kicker? My most humbling experience was finding the source code online to the original Pokemon games. It was right after I had finished my first text based Linux console game and I was looking up other programs source codes just for shits and giggles. Most of them were simple and I learned a few simple tricks but the red and blue Pokemon were the first codes I saw that fascinated me. The addressing, the memory allocation, even the simple audio processing was simply genius. So many unique innovations and techniques. If I achieve 1/5th of the skill I found in those files, I can die a happy programmer!3

You made a very important device used in pharmaceutical labs which stores important data, but for some fucking reason you decided to write the communication protocol so poorly that I want to cry.
You can't fucking have unique IDs for important records, but still asks me for the "INDEX" (not unique ID, fucking INDEX) to delete a particular one. YOU HAVE IT IN THE MEMORY, WHY DON'T USE IT?!
How the fuck you have made such a stupid decision… it's a device that communicates using USB so theoretically I could unplug it for a moment, remove records, add them and plug it in again and then delete a wrong one.
I can't fucking check if it's still the correct one and the user isn't an asshole every 2 seconds because this dumb device takes about 3 for each request made.
WHY?
Why I, developing a third party system, have to be responsible for these dumb vulnerabilities you've created? -

c++ has a little bit of a learning curve, I think.
Used smart pointers everywhere in my code because I heard that's what we gotta do nowadays.
When learning about shared vs unique vs weak, I disregarded weak pointers because I didn't really understand them.
"That sounds like something for liberal pansies", I said to myself, then continued on with my STRONG shared and unique pointers.
Now my app leaks memory like a MOTHERFUCKER, if you can believe that.
So now I need to go back and manage my object lifetime with more intent instead of just making everything a shared pointer. Fuckin circular references. Fuckin reaping what I fuckin sow. God damn.9 -

A QueueListener connects to RabbitMQ check for payload then *disconnects*;
A TaskProvider in ASP.Net.MVC.Core(whatever it is) listening http and dependency inject that QueuePoller;
A Visual Cron timer calls that http url every 5 minutes.
Wait for it: a set of database tables to store messages for another MessageProcessor.

This project is gonna drive me insane. I'm moving a custom-scripted WordPress ecommerce site to WooCommerce. The basis of the source site was WooCommerce but with the advantages stripped away and with a LOT of hard coded stuff added to it to make it seem like a unique, custom ecommerce engine.
Now I have to strip all that away and standardize it back into the WooCommerce way so it's all easier to maintain.

I had the "pleasure" of working with someone who though that it would be a good idea to create random strings and check if they were in a database, to ensure they are unique. What's even better, is that this was being used for batch generation of up to 100 such strings at a time!

For a new microservice we were designing, I recently had a design discussion with a team member on creating REST endpoints for a new entity. This discussion went on for almost 3 hours, most of the time was spent on why to have two endpoints for getting this resource, one is a POST using a graphQL-like query and another one is a GET using unique ID. I said, the client-side use case is different, one is a dashboard where search results need to be shown based on multiple fields and the unique ID won't be available there because it is a system generated value, second one will be used when the unique ID is present in the client as a result of previous search result. Their responses will be similar, first returns a list of entities, second returns a single entity of the same structure.
Then came the next argument: if both APIs are returning same response, why do we need two different requests ?
It was like saying, because 5+6=11, any sum of two numbers resulting in 11 should always use 5 & 6.
Are people so frustrated of working remotely all the time that they come with such weird arguments ?1 -
People have to realize that people are unique no matter the skill set. You can replace the skill set but not the person.1

He said "edit72-btn and del72-btn are almost same, couple of characters are different. Are they going to work?"1 -

I wanted to learn a new language.
Started looking through jvm languages first because thats where i feel home, but they are all just subpar versions of java.
Then i started looking at script languages but anything they do, i can just do with java (i know js too, dont recommend that)
Out of the other languages, c# is the only thing that can give me something extra through unity, but hell, i can just use jMonkey.
So my questions is, can you give me languages that are both useful and unique? Also, opinions on Rust please.8 -

How do you all store photos on your site?

How do you approach generating "random" unique numbers/strings ? Exactly, when you have to be sure the generated stuff is unique overtime? Eg. as few collisions in future as possible.
Now I don't mean UUIDs but when there is a functionality that needs some length defined, symbol specific and definitely unique data, every time it does it's stuff.
TLDR STORY: Generating 8 digits long numbers so they are (deterministically - wink wink) unique is hard but Format Preserving Encryption saves the day. (for me)
FULL STORY:
I had to deal with both strings and codes today.
One was to generate shortlink word for url, luckily found a library that does exactly this. (Hashids)
BUT generating 8 digits long, somewhat random number was harder then I thought, found out on SO something like "sha256(seed) => bytes => ascii/numbers mangling" but that had a lot of collisions because of how the hash got mangled to actually output numbers and also to fit the length.
After some hours I stumbled upon Format Preserving encryption (pyffx) and man it did what I wanted and it had max 2 collisions in 100k values. Still the solution with this feels hacky af. (encrypting straddled unix timestamp with lots of decimals)6 -
is using auto incremented id as primary key bad practice in mysql??
My teacher said it is wrong to use autoincrement because it will skip number when row is deleted. But it does to make it unique .
Or should i use uuid ? But doesn't it impact performance?57 -
So today I inherited an iPhone app written for iPhones 3 & 4 in Objective-C.
I am facing two not so unique problems:
1. I hate Objective-C so I quickly converted it to Swift but as expected I created a tonne of errors and warnings that I am working through
2. The developer(s) didn't think it important enough to leave a solitary comment explaining what the hell they were doing.
So looking forward to a few weeks of swearing and getting myself all upset trying to get this app to work in a complete information black hole.3 -
So i was commenting on a rant by some user where we had this conversation about IDEs and editors...
Point: Intellij has an option to set a background to the whole ide which gives coding a unique experience instead of the pale dull solid color background.
Go to Settings > Appearance > Background image is in the main appearance tab click and set the image, position, transparency ... And voila u have a background image on your editor.
Alternative way just go to settings and search for background image12 -
Took over a project where a dev created a table with no primary key and enforce a unique constraint in code. Wtf? He also always selected top 1 so if you added a record directly in the table it completely fucked the expected data.
So, when I took this piece of shit over I didn't realize what the table was and when I tried to convert it to EF it barfed since there was no PK. Was a complete PITA and had to create all new tables.

Social media site/app... I think social media is such a saturated market yet everyone seems to think their spin is somehow unique and worthwhile...
Although, not sure if DevRant counts as 'social media' but tbh I see real value in getting developers to form a community, where to profit potential comes from potentially linking developers to recruiters/employers (targeted ads to devs for shit we would want). And devs get a nice platform to socialize and bullshit about things we all experience (ie, the 'community' is real and valuable to us)1 -
Hello, can someone help me with this one ? I guess that the fucking SO elitist community would have beaten me to death if I asked this question.

The both keys are not Unique in themselves but their combinations are unique.4 -

What are some interesting / unique approaches you've seen to representing generics in syntax? The only one I know is the Java/C#/Typescript way of using a separate set of parentheses and either specifying all of them or none, and I've already experimented a bit with passing them as regular arguments which works great with autocurry but every syntax option for inference adds visual noise.9 -

I'd like to create an imageboard app with React-Native and got a few questions.
Every user has to like or dislike the shown content to advance to the next image/video (tinder style). I want to use that data to feed a machine learning algorithm and generate an unique selection of displayed media for each user with that.
Even though I never used it yet before (I'm still learning to code) I want to use python and a python machine learning library for that.
Can you give me any advice for the python part? For example which library to use, where to start, etc. .
Do you think that might be an interesting idea to realize? :)2 -

Introducing Jungla.
Jungla is an alternative to GraphQL with some unique features.
The goal of Jungla is to have the freedom to structure your results the way you truely want, on the fly.
Rather than defining your schemas before the requests like in GraphQL... Jungla can be entirely defined in your request, or implemented server side for quicker request times.

Been working on this project for the last 9 months, it's 1000 times bigger than the original spec, but the worst part of the whole experience is the god damn Microsoft Access database and migrating data from it.
Wanky encoding, references that aren't actually linked up, ID's that aren't unique, meaningless columns and table names.
Pushed me to the edge. -
Alright... maybe it's time to call it quits...
NLegs changed the ID structure... The URL is like
http://.../yyyy/MM/dd/id.html
Before id was unique... so thats what I have in my DB, the ID column is int. primary key.
Now id by itself is no longer unique...
---
Actually no.... After changing the code to just pick the next ID (like autonumber) and check uniqueness using the url...
It turns out actually the "new issues" are old.... they just changed which image to show in the front page thumbnails...5 -

to;dr: I think I'm retarded. I don't know how to networking.
got Proxmox set up on my server... sorta. I suck at networking. It reaaaally annoys me when my business logic is sound but the data is corrupted.
For example, find duplicates in a HashMap<String>.. but I didn't take into account the input could contain a space either before or after.. so I end up wondering: if a HashMap only contains unique keys, how come the count of items in the map is the same as the count of the input keys?! Well.. spaces were the culprit.
"12345" != "12345 ".. and therefore the Map sees it as two distinct keys..
What an annoying bug.
Lesson learned: 1) Sanitize input first and never trust it. 2) Never make assumptions16 -
Hey guys, I am implementing some integration tools for Blokchains and planning to make it SaaS ( Software as a Service ). The biggest problem for me is to generate a unique name for that project. Can you help me?3

Just a random question: how much does it cost to retain a domain name?
I know we can rent a domain name for like an year or such for $5-10 if its a unique one. After 1 year, we have to pay an increased amount for every subsequent year (which keeps on increasing i guess?)
So how does these new emerging companies ( or any company in general ) retail their domain rights? For eg paypal.com would have costed only a few bucks when first bought, but when the company got famous, its domain rent must have increase by a 1000 times. So does these big companies pay millions of dollars just to retain their domain name?8 -

Dear developer who wrote the code I'm looking at,
thanks, I really need comments like this one. I was wandering lost in 1500 lines of code, looking for an explaination of what the actual fuck the code is doing, and there I see you, comment. It's not like I want to know what the hundreds of lines functions do, who cares about that. One day in a near but comfortably not too near future, I will start a webdevelopment 3-letter-abbreviation dictionary page, with self-taken photos of Belgian car license plates, and use the alphabetic part for each definition. All 3 applications uses a different tech stack with their unique problems :') -
Im creating a "settings" functionality of sorts, unique per "account"
Ideally I'd create a new table, FK it with the Accs table with each Setting variable being a column
But im also inclined to just turn it into a JSON and not bother with N columns for it specially since arrays are involved in the settings
Could version it to ensure that if Settings change on code-level, old accs with old settings dont get fucked up
Now this is a pet project so im free to experiment, not bound by high level design documents
What do y'all prefer/recommend? JSON<->Settings Obj or plain old Table/column with FKs9 -
The Spring framework is the most convoluted construct. You have ExceptionControllers that implement Abstractions which have other implementations themselves. You have ViewResolvers that have several different types, each of which has their own unique way of working. You have Configurers, Scanners.. anyway.
Even if it is excellent design, it's tiring to work with and understand, at least for my junior self. I used to kick ass on this stuff back at uni, but that was 5 years ago and I don't remember exactly how things work again, I'd need a refresher.7 -
Being the only dev to maintain a website with 20k unique visitors weekly, an admin panel for all the things you can imagine, including a custom e-shop, invoicing, etc, etc, and dozens of smaller websites is soo time consuming, and frustrating. I need a break and build something awesome...2

Let some number P be the product of two factors, A and B
Let the iterations of A*1..2..3..N up to B+1 be a directed graph.
Would this graph be eularian?
If so then it should be possible to use the BEST algorithm to count the number of eularian circuits, yielding B, no?
Edit: this is supported by the following text:
An arborescence can equivalently be defined as a rooted digraph in which the path from the root to any other vertex is unique.
* * *
Where the product of any two primes is unique, the path to it across our graph here, is also unique. -
How would you approach choosing a fairly short but meaningful domain name? Common words are obviously going to be taken.
I have a handful of domain names used for different things, but my main one is 17 characters long and made up of 2 words and not particularly interesting (my surname + another word). It's relatively easy to read out to people over the phone, but inputting it in a phone handset or on a device without a keyboard (e.g. setting the hostname + domain of a media centre with a remote control) is a bit tiresome.
Doesn't even have to be something I can say easily as I mainly want it just for "infrastructure" purposes rather than to host a website etc.
I'd probably use it for sign-up e-mails to reduce the amount of spam/newsletter mail (I do generate a separate address for signing up to most services) but other than that wouldn't be using it regularly for e-mail.
But I don't want something meaningless like abcxyz.1 -
I need to figure out a way uniquely identify each computer which visits the web site I am creating. Does anybody have any advice on how to achieve this?
Because i want the solution to work on all machines and all browsers (within reason) I am trying to create a solution using javascript.
I appreciate the help. Thanks.

Cookies will not do.17 -
I wanted my 20th Rant to be special. And it really is! This is the first time I haven't ranted about anything in particular.

I'm joining a startup next month and they are working on a project that requires knowledge of a unique framework and it's architecture. They know I'm mostly free this month and so they have asked me (in a time frame) to learn and perform certain tasks. They have also scheduled reviews to track progress.
tl;dr: Company wants me to learn stuff before joining and schedule reviews.
Is this behavior normal or/and appropriate?6 -
Worst coding mistake was assuming that the NameCheap domain API was an update and not a replacement. I went to added a test sub domain to our company domain and it cleared out 40 unique sub domains taking down our sites and email until I could manually add them back.1

So, I noticed that each unique tag gets stored and cross referenced. Just wondering, how many tags were used up to now?1

Every time a read a rant about a company environment here I think: “It sounds exactly like my previous company!”
But I know we are in different countries…
I guess that when companies suck over a given threshold, they distort space and time like a black hole and become a unique super dimensional joint venture.1 -
I finally got a working D&D Dungeon Master AI working right, a lot of actions have to be presented before the full combat round, but the results are all unique, but it still isn't creative enough to add more then 2 npc with conversation skills, I think there's some hidden blocks in the backend :/7

What do I do? I have a unique idea in a fairly large industry that I believe is profitable (based on research and estimates) but the development could potentially take years and is outside of my skill level. I also don't know anybody who would be passionate enough to want to join me or wouldn't steal the idea... All advice would be greatly appreciated :)4

So Google’s Gemini API challenge is currently ongoing and I am looking for idea suggestions.
- The goal is to create an AI enabled platform for web or mobile with Gemini API integration.
- The idea is expected to be unique or creative (unique ideas are favored so I heard)
- I found out the last winner of Google’s Dialogflow competition created a Mobile app for the elderly that provides screen flow guide on usage of some of Google’s product (ie: Youtube, Gmail, Drive etc.). This is just an idea guide and I see why such would win. It’s not a must requirement.
The final code will be open source and surely would credit the original idea owner. I need your ideas fellow devranters. What AI enabled app do you think have the best chance of winning this challenge? I have some time to spare on this one.5 -
How to Develop Your Talent Stack https://elmghari.com/talent-stack/
TL;DR
"Building your talent stack will give you a unique edge for particular roles or tasks. In doing so, you won’t be competing with everyone else anymore. You won’t be playing a zero sum game.
Instead, you’ll be focusing on yourself, playing positive sum games, and building your own path." -
I think the most unnecessary feature was when I decided to create a network wrapper for one of my libraries.
We had 2 network styles in my library, but both were supported as they're each used for unique reasons. Then we decided to build 2 wrappers so either library could read the other libraries messages... We never ended up using it... -

i once changed all of the passwords of my main online accounts(google, apple, facebook, telegram, outlook) as they weren't changed for years.
i decided unique and long passwords for each of them.😎
immediately after changing the passwords, i forgot all of them. 😵fortunately, i was able to reset.
Has this ever happened to anyone?3 -

Is relying on probability bad practice? I have a container that needs to know about all other instances of the same container and assign a unique ID to itself on initialization. I thought that if I selected a big random number as its id on startup, the chances of it having the same id as another instance is very low.
To prevent two instances from having the same id I could check for all running instances on the network, but what if two instances start at the same time? They won't find each other since none of them will be fully initialized when their id checks run.
Probability says I'll be fine, Murphy's law says I won't. What do?5 -

People replying to a restaurant ad on Facebook asking where the restaurant is located (not related to dev but I built the restaurant's website and have access to Facebook admin stuff). Saying things like "It would be helpful to post the address." Bitch, it would be helpful if your lazy ass could do so much as simply fucking click the Facebook page, visit the website, or just fucking Google the restaurant (it's a very unique name and cuisine, especially for this area) and you'll find the address in a split second. Some people can't do shit if the information isn't shoved in their face in big bold flashing letters... even then I don't have hope for people like this.10

startups. enhanced version of something. not hating. but just. if you own one. please migrate the human resources too. just like the system.
you may have new human resources only if your startup is having/creating a unique system.
and please don't tell me yours are unique before you know the definition of unique itself.
effective development should leave minimum waste.
to who think that new system inside your head is better than real life system.1 -

Intelligent Algorithms do not understand role playing, acting or humor.
Combined with permanent unique identifiers issued by social media companies for so-called "security" and moderation reasons, will systematically cause a wide range of serious consequences.
You can not reason with an algorithm.2 -
So I have to record a video on why I should be a brand ambassador. I've researched the company, and know I should be confident and show I'm social, but any suggestions on how you think I should be unique so I stand out?

I am thinking of how I can make data upload reliable. I am sure that I am making it more complex as it could be and I need some pointer.
My goal is to have a pause/resume feature in file uploading.
Here is how it would work.
In order to start uploading , you give the server
1) File Name
2) Folder path you want to upload it to
3) Checksum of the file
Here the server will check whether you can upload it to a folder, whether the file have been previously uploaded (by file name and checksum)
If you could actually upload to the folder , server will return "unique file token" , "folder path" , "unique byte token". Let call it init_upload().
The client will use "unique file token" (to identify the file) , folder path (to know where to upload it to) , "unique byte token" and byte[] (data which to actually upload). Let call this operation data_upload().
If the operation is actually complete , server will return new "unique byte token"
Internally it will actually work like this.Let say we want to upload "file.mp3", when the client call init_upload() it will create
file.mp3 and unique_byte_token.file.mp3.
When the client upload data first time , it will append data to unique_byte_token.file.mp3.
When the client upload data second time , it will check whether the "byte token" that client put is the same as previous "unique_byte_token". If it is same ,
1) we move the data from unique_byte_token.file.mp3 to file.mp3
2) Delete unique_byte_token.file.mp3
3) Create new unique_byte_token.file.mp3
4) Append data to unique_byte_token.file.mp3
The reason I am using "byte token" is because I want to check whether previous upload is actually success.
Let say we need to call 50 part of data_upload() will put 49 part to file.mp3 and 1 part to byte_token.file.mp3.
Finally the client need to call data_upload_complete() which will
1) Put reminding 1 part to file.mp3
2) Remove byte_token.file.mp3 as cleanup6 -
At work thres a legacy "common" DLL, which held a helper function that's incharge of creating Slugs, it takes an MD5 of the current time stamp UTC, removing non-URLable chars, and taking the first N chars that remain then
Ngl I was impressed at first at it, but then I thought, its Uniqueness isnt guaranteed
But then again I thought, the uniqueness can be tested via a call given it's indexed anyway in DB so O(1), and if non-unique, just re-call the function. Even in the worst case scenario the hits won't be that many anyway
I didnt change the code, tho at first I was inclined to given my "it isnt proven-unique" stance but am wondering, if this is a good approach
While coolish, it seems wrong in the back of my mind somehow...1 -
My number one problem whenever I need to write original unique code is this question: "What's the next line supposed to say?"
I just really have a hard time knowing what the next thing is I'm supposed to write, even when I know pretty well what the thing is supposed to do.
Anyone else? -
Struggled whole day to remove duplicate objects from a list in java. Those objects (of a custom class) contain a unique id, the remaining properties can be identical across list items.
Wondered why hashset.add() always returns true and thus duplicates are still inserted.
Little did I forget about things like equals() and hashCode() 🤦1 -
Most of the product managers seem to explicitly mention user metrics with unique. Say # of unique users for the day, # of users ordered and so on. While being explicit is good, I'm wondering is there any metric that doesn't require unique counts?1

Working on writing a Morse interpreter in Java..
I find out I have to initialize a collection of a specific alphabet with unique symbols in it..
I am too lazy to come up with something right now..
And thus I start repeatedly performing the following actions:
down, left, insert apostrophe
for stuff like putting values into my Map<Character, char[]>.
Now my purposefully rhythmic typing sounds like a galloping horse. Tackatack, tackatack, tackatack! ♫

Working with nightly builds and concept tech is such a fucking hassle...
I'm currently working on a WebAssembly proof of concept where I need to generate a unique id, but since threading is currently not supported (rust and webassembly) I cant use half of the libraries currently out.
And the ones that does work... guess what... are not compatible with the nightly build of the compiler I'm using for Rust. Just fucking end me.
The legit only workaround I can find is to make a server request and get the unique id from there... piece of cunt software...I need a break 😑 -

For most part, after realising I have freedom of implementing and structure my codebase. I have followed only this rule whenever I stumbled into new way of code format/implimentation techniques.
- Understand the structure
- Check if it's new/upcoming way people started coding
- decide should I use it just yet
- implement according.
Adding factors such as time and prefered language, it turns out to be your own personal style.
PS: yes you do follow community conversion but, there's some part of it that makes it unique to you. -
Lifts are the need required by our present society for the simple access of merchandise and enterprises by the organizations for the innovation. It contains the exchange of products just as individuals for the few purposes. The fundamental sorts of lifts for the utilization are Passenger lift, Home Elevator in Ajman, Hospital Elevator, Cargo lift in UAE and so forth by the lift organizations in Ajman for the enormous exchange components to little things. So it requires unique support for the ideal use by the customers.

It is incredibly frustrating to work with SDK with no proper documentation and less community support.

New version, new regression tests. It's the first time I'm trying to run them fully automated. Tests were ok separately, but as it turns out, "random" generated number is not OK for creating unique names if it's being created from datetime (yymmddmmss), and tests run within one minute.
Also, new version broke our hack of disabling browser pop-up confirmations. Fuck.1 -
How much of "unique" the string that is the current epoch in milliseconds converted to base 36 ?
I know it is not universal. But require such a bad luck to have collision no ?
I am gonna use it for "transaction" primary key. (Every time a user pay, it it a new trasantion).
Uuid are very long, i need to put this pk in qr-code later

Friend asked me to help him with his excel file, as I know a bunch of that, it was just a small and quick thing he said, I just can't get this function to work...
Now I've rewritten all of that excel files functions and, without error handling and anomaly processing every function is an average of 500 chars. Times 500 unique functions...

In this time of the year is a tradition to spend time with the family (they expect you to do) but I have to do other things (e.g. my project).

How do you spend this holidays? Any tradition in special(unique)? -
The website I'm building is like a crypto flavored kickstarter/gofundme.
What I need assistance is figuring out how to write python code for this process:
There will be an intermediary wallet used to gauge the funds in order to payout [like kickstarter]- the second function of this intermediary wallet is to deduct it's commission
For each user account post a unique ID is created and that is now linked to the wallet used to deposit their final funds in.
I don't need you to do the work for me... I just need guidance on how to visualize a process to write this out.. maybe some relevant documentation? i've already attempted but was outa luck.1
