Well, here's the OS rant I promised. Also apologies for no blog posts the past few weeks, working on one but I want to have all the information correct and time isn't my best friend right now :/

Anyways, let's talk about operating systems. They serve a purpose which is the goal which the user has.
So, as everyone says (or, loads of people), every system is good for a purpose and you can't call the mainstream systems shit because they all have their use.

Last part is true (that they all have their use) but defining a good system is up to an individual. So, a system which I'd be able to call good, had at least the following 'features':
- it gives the user freedom. If someone just wants to use it for emailing and webbrowsing, fair enough. If someone wants to produce music on it, fair enough. If someone wants to rebuild the entire system to suit their needs, fair enough. If someone wants to check the source code to see what's actually running on their hardware, fair enough. It should be up to the user to decide what they want to/can do and not up to the maker of that system.
- it tries it's best to keep the security/privacy of its users protected. Meaning, by default, no calling home, no integrating users within mass surveillance programs and no unnecessary data collection.
- Open. Especially in an age of mass surveillance, it's very important that one has the option to check the underlying code for vulnerabilities/backdoors. Can everyone do that, nope. But that doesn't mean that the option shouldn't be there because it's also about transparency so you don't HAVE to trust a software vendor on their blue eyes.
- stability. A system should be stable enough for home users to use. For people who like to tweak around? Also, but tweaking *can* lead to instability and crashes, that's not the systems' responsibility.

Especially the security and privacy AND open parts are why I wouldn't ever voluntarily (if my job would depend on it, sure, I kinda need money to stay alive so I'll take that) use windows or macos. Sure, apple seems to care about user privacy way more than other vendors but as long as nobody can verify that through source code, no offense, I won't believe a thing they say about that because no one can technically verify it anyways.

Some people have told me that Linux is hard to use for new/(highly) a-technical people but looking at my own family and friends who adapted fast as hell and don't want to go back to windows now (and mac, for that matter), I highly doubt that. Sure, they'll have to learn something new. But that was also the case when they started to use any other system for the first time. Possibly try a different distro if one doesn't fit?

Problems - sometimes hard to solve on Linux, no doubt about that. But, at least its open. Meaning that someone can dive in as deep as possible/necessary to solve the problem. That's something which is very difficult with closed systems.

The best example in this case for me (don't remember how I did it by the way) was when I mounted a network drive at boot on windows and Linux (two systems using the same webDav drive). I changed the authentication and both systems weren't in for booting anymore. Hours of searching how to unfuck this on windows - I ended up reinstalling it because I just couldn't find a solution.
On linux, i found some article quite quickly telling to remove the entry for the webdav thingy from fstab. Booted into a root recovery shell, chrooted to the harddrive, removed the entry in fstab and rebooted. BAM. Everything worked again.

So yeah, that's my view on this, I guess ;P

Using Ubuntu for the first time on my new XPS-13 Dev. Ed.

I'm loving the OS but it sure is frustrating. Can't even get Spotify to download -.-

We have 2 layers of testing environments and production.

I tested the changes on the 1st layer, bud since it was 5min to lunch i did not test on 2nd layer which is connected to the production DB. I pushed to production and caused 5+ websites to go full retard and went to lunch.

Came back to 19emails and 3+ skype msgs about "why the fck would you do that..."

Estimated damages nearly 20k EUR and i lost some permissions for two weeks, but my great boss helped me out and cheered me up by telling stories how he took down multiple servers too

I used to be a sysadmin and to some extent I still am. But I absolutely fucking hated the software I had to work with, despite server software having a focus on stability and rigid testing instead of new features *cough* bugs.

After ranting about the "do I really have to do everything myself?!" for long enough, I went ahead and did it. Problem is, the list of stuff to do is years upon years long. Off the top of my head, there's this Android application called DAVx5. It's a CalDAV / CardDAV client. Both of those are extensions to WebDAV which in turn is an extension of HTTP. Should be simple enough. Should be! I paid for that godforsaken piece of software, but don't you dare to delete a calendar entry. Don't you dare to update it in one place and expect it to push that change to another device. And despite "server errors" (the client is fucked, face it you piece of trash app!), just keep on trying, trying and trying some more. Error handling be damned! Notifications be damned! One week that piece of shit lasted for, on 2 Android phones. The Radicale server, that's still running. Both phones however are now out of sync and both of them are complaining about "400 I fucked up my request".

Now that is just a simple example. CalDAV and CardDAV are not complicated protocols. In fact you'd be surprised how easy most protocols are. SMTP email? That's 4 commands and spammers still fuck it up. HTTP GET? That's just 1 command. You may have to do it a few times over to request all the JavaScript shit, but still. None of this is hard. Why do people still keep fucking it up? Is reading a fucking RFC when you're implementing a goddamn protocol so damn hard? Correctness be damned, just like the memory? If you're one of those people, kill yourself.

So yeah. I started writing my own implementations out of pure spite. Because I hated the industry so fucking much. And surprisingly, my software does tend to be lightweight and usually reasonably stable. I wonder why! Maybe it's because I care. Maybe people should care more often about their trade, rather than those filthy 6 figures. There's a reason why you're being paid that much. Writing a steaming pile of dogshit shouldn't be one of them.

optimising, varying the code got me into a situation when the content got saved in the BD but inconsistent (duplicates) and the table had often more than 1,5M rows. That was what told me its not a performance issue, my code is the issue. (dah)

I was starting to think it would be easier to export a prepared query to a sql file and load the file into the db as thats the fastest possible option...I even started to think about switching to python, then it hit me, Laravel has a shitload of routes to the DB so I switched to PDO

I'm currently on a longterm journey to find the best over-the-head budget headphones for coding, just out of curiosity, I started with cheap Phillips headphones for a couple of euros (9 or 10 i don't rem.), I would say they are usable, for a casual user, but far-far from the best

Then i purchased a Sennheiser HD451 for like 3x the price of the Phillips, really good. I use them in work and wanted to go on with the comparison so i bought a ATH m30x for home, and for gods sake, they are soo fucking good, way better what i would expect from a budget headphone, it cost twice the price of the Sennheiser.

I wanted to automate some tasks in work, because it started to be a pain in the ass, manually copying those assets took me between 30 - 50 min

let me see, I always wanted to check out python so I started to copy paste some code together, editing it and after a few hours all I know I have a tool which logs in to our work CMS download and unpacks a zip archive, creates a backup from the old files in the repository and moves the files I just downloaded in the repo, I put this in a loop for our twenty languages (websites) and its done

Im amazed, I never picked up a language this easy to use

guys, I've spent 3 days trying to deploy a small site with a nodejs API on ubuntu/apache with a reverse proxy.

I was cursing everything and everyone when I realised the node app was listening on port 1337 while the proxy was set to 3117

Currently running Kubuntu and want to switch to Antegros.

Installed UNetBootin.
Downloaded Antegros Live ISO from Antegros website.
Format USB to FAT32.
Used UNetBootin to make Antegros bootable USB.
Shutdown computer.
Restarted/boot from USB.
Computer checks drives.
Beeps, says no bootable options found, shutdown button pops up.
Shutdown and turn back on.
Kubuntu running.

So, today I was very happy with my new chromecast. I can hold a button on remote and tell him what to search on youtube. But it's impossible to let it search forward tsoding. It just doesn't understand. So, very confident I spelled tsoding and expected it to understand correctly. No! From all freaking miles we made to AI, it can't fucking understand spelling? How hard could that be. So now, I still often have to use my phone. Big downer.

Also: you never know if it will answer a question you made or if it'll search for videos. Seems very random.

I should be able to add things to Callender by just speaking to it but it says that it doesn't have permissions and can't find them nowhere.

Besides that, this new one is usable as network drive of 4Gb. Good source file backup network drive. I already try to contribute to the webdav server on it. The implementation is a bit sad and I already wrote a whole full featured webdav server myself. Also offered Dutch translation.

PCI DSS scan came back saying that WebDAV extensions need to be disabled. Kind of surprised, since I have other servers I’ve configured to standard and I can’t find anything in my notes about it.

In either case, been searching for info on how to fix it for 2 days and turned up nothing useful. Report found it on ports 80 and 443, so a firewall fix seems out here.

so one of our ISP (Orange Slovakia) had troubles with service for like two days. Their DNS servers translated domains to IPs reaaally slow or not at all. So when i saw the dns error in chrome (yes i use chrome and not quantum) I changed my dns to google dns and ignored it.

Two days later when the service was back up and running, this ISP went to the local media and made a statement "we had a DDOS attack, no user data were harmed, blabla" that was when my BS radar went bananas... so somebody DDOSd your DNS server ... for two fucking days straight... this is probably a lie or they have really noob engineers (or both).

I'm not an expert on network services or routing, or servers but, how about turning off this server, IP and setting up a backup on a different IP ? Possibly anyone here with experience how to handle DDOS? Whats the chance of this happening? i'm really curious

Most satisfying bug, it was something with good old $.ajax, way back when Axios wasn't a thing and SPAs weren't so widely used.

I was somehow able to fix the call params for a file that would not load with any other setup. Maybe it was just setting async to sync or something like that, however the thing is I was not familiar with AJAX at all, but I managed to get it run.

Then I googled, why its working and figured out all the answers on SO and other pages were the exact thing i set up for my call. I was so proud

some context: I was struggling with this bug for days and asked more experienced web devs, everybody answered, your code should just work fine.

Maybe thats why I have a positive relation with SO, because the first thing i searched there was something that I figured out myself, haha

so one of our managers sent me an email what has to be changed in our FAQ section which runs on WP...

but then i remembered, our cleaning lady had a surgery and wasn't here for a week, maybe she will not come for another week and the kitchen is already starting to get real smelly...

so i created a user for our manager and sent him the credentials to his brand new WP editor account so he can make his changes and went to wash the dishes instead

I love this weekly group rant, it made me think back when my mom started to work in a kindergarten and she used to take me to work when i was 4-7 years old ('94 - '97).

There was this "TV" and all the kids used to smash the buttons on it. It also played sound, but there was always a lot of kids there so I was shy to ask them if I push the buttons too. But I was the teachers son, so I didn't had to sleep in the afternoon, and then I discovered this computer thing I was amazed, it was like nothing I saw before, you push it and it does what you pushed and, *_* this smiley is exactly me back then. It was probably an old commodore with green text on the black screen. It was the moment when I decided to get more information about this wonder.

In elementary school (around '98) we had this computer room and as I was one of the best students back then I was granted access to it. It was a huge success in a post communist country to get money for new computers to teach us kids to use them back then, so only the chosen ones could use them, and I was one of them, one of the best time time of my life, honestly. At this moment I knew for sure, I want one and when I grow up I gonna work with them. I had no idea what you can do with it but every adult is talking about how well paid are the people who use them at work. :D it sounds funny now

SMB/CIFS support on Linux distros is a nightmare! Switching from wired to wireless will cause ALL mounts to freeze, and they all become impossible to dismount normally. You can't even ls the root folder anymore if there are frozen mount folders inside. It's f#&%ing retarded to have to reboot your PC twice a day because you lost WiFi signal for one second, and the underlying processes don't understand SIGTERM. And I could go on about MTP! Standard file transfer protocol for Android but boy it is hellish. Trying to copy a structure with subfolders will take forever because every ls call to the phone is like an API call to some free webhosting company in Australia, takes forever, if it even succeeds. I won't even get started on WebDAV and SSHFS (the latter is even worse than CIFS). Those make me want to do unpleasant things to my computer. So frustrating! I can't be the only one who has experienced this, right?

I just started learning how to code and am very frustrated trying to find a degree to go into. I'm interested in becoming a Web Developer but the idea of being a CEH intrigues me also. Any ideas what programs or degrees I could go for? I'm near the University of central Florida if that helps. Please give me guidance for I am lost

Last week I spent a couple of days researching how to sync a CalDAV server with any Android calendar.
I downloaded several apps, and tried to connect in many ways (without HTTPS, calendar link, user link, any combination of them, with and without www, etc.)
Today I chose an option I had been trying to avoid: downloading an app that was recommended in some places but that's no longer on Google Play Store.
Got the APK from some website that didn't look too suspicious...

IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. Within the next minutes I could test sending events to and fro.
WHY?
WHAT- WHY IS THERE NO ALTERNATIVE FOR SOMETHING SO TRIVIAL. This future is so dumb.

Consider an API that uses the HTTP path to represent position in a tree that literally represents a file tree with minimal constraints, and GET/PUT/DELETE methods to read, write and destroy the nodes. How would you encode read/write operations to per-node metadata? The kinds of metadata are static and around 4, so inventing HTTP verbs for each of them is infeasible but filtering is not necessary.

Options considered so far:
- toplevel resources alongside a namespaced /data such as /acl, /lock
- magic keywords to the Range header (this is apparently compliant)
- mimetypes such as text/plain+acl
- SETPROP / PROP methods in the spirit of WebDAV
- headers (I worry this may become an immitigable bottleneck really fast)

I'm looking for any kind of suggestion or insight, not perfect answers.

I read the WebDAV specification and I won't even suggest that I'm trying to align with it, the only protocol I'd seen in the past with comparable scope bloat is WebRTC.

Don't know why, sometimes my Android server changes IPs (without restart), that fucks the exit of services....
Like, don't know why, http always works even when IP changes
but WebDav stops working.... I mean, I can use inside the network but I want to access it from the outside.

create new laravel project -> 3 errors, missing laravel/pint, phpunit

me: FE in work, but doing fullstack on my passion projects and somewhat confident on small VPSs - heck, I have a beard, I can do server stuff :) - migrating a WP site that just wont work, copied everything, didn't work, used a migration tool, didn't work, always getting "Connection refused"... must be something with the SSL certificates.. 3 fckn days passed by and nothing when I stumbled upon a forum post with similar issue where the guy stated: I tried all the obvious like copying files, db, certificates, enabled ssl on apache... then it hit me, this is a new installation, I didn't enabled SSL in apache sudo a2enmode ssl restarted apache and BOOM everything is working
part of me was like how stupid you have to be - but the other part is like I guess I learn something every day, this is how you migrate a WP site with the domain #IloveIT

Need an advice on syncing large amounts of small files. For starters I have 2 million of ~20-25kb sized files in dropbox. Syncing it with my local machine is a pain in the ass (API limits syncing to 4-5 files per second, so I will need at least 96 hours just to take out everything from dropbox).

Recently I started looking into self hosted cloud solutions. I fiddled around with nextcloud but it's client limits syncing to 5-6 files per second as well. Accessing nextcloud via webdav from a rclone client I was able to up the syncing speed to 15-25 files per second but that's all.

Any solutions where I should host 2mil of files and would be able to sync them fast to my own machine with some cloud client when I need it to?
