Person at work, staring at my keyboard: How much was it?
Me: The keyboard? Oh it's a cheap one for around $30.
Person: Huh... I'll never get you rich boys and your fads.
Well, I don't fucking judge you for your $600 phone, or your $80 shoes or shirts, you cuntwaffle. Fuckin' asshole has the face of a horse's left testicle, is always on his phone, which is arguably fine since he's not a dev but still fuck him, and has the gall to call me bringing my mechanical keyboard to work a 'rich fad'. Oh, that's rich coming from you. Ever seen your ugly mug in your undeserved branded clothing, you unloved, shit-gobbling piece of shit?
"You type so loud." And you breathe too loud but I don't tell you to stop but maybe I ought to.
Go suck on your daddy-uncle's chode for a couple more bucks and stop hanging around me, you judgemental cum-snorting piece of shit.
P.s. it's a cheap keyboard with blue switches but the office is normally noisy and busy enough that no one gives a shit about it. Planning on buying an Anne Pro sometime next month.27 -
When you can't take part in the new avatar shirts (or any avatar swag for that matter) because you mostly lurk and hardly ever rant...7

I designed a logo for a family member's business with the expectation that I would receive payment once the work was completed. I wasn't expecting a lot, I only really do freelance work for software but I know my way around Illustrator. I'm not one to charge family anywhere near full price and I felt no contract was needed. We were back and fourth for a little bit, getting the logo to his liking. Silly me during all of this didn't watermark any of the images I was sending (didn't think I'd have to, you know... Family) and a little while later he's gone and ordered shirts with the logo on it without paying or even contacting me. When I confronted him about it, he pulls out the whole "No contract was made" bullshit. It's ridiculous how arrogant people can be, I was asking for $50. I put a good 15 hours into it with all the alterations he wanted. 15 hours I could have spent on actual clients.
TLDR; Designed a logo for a family member without a contract, he decided not to pay.17 -

!!rooting while drunk
I got drunk last night and painted my nails. I bought a really pretty shade of purple that should match one of my favorite shirts, and it's my last day at the office today (EVER; lease is up), so dressing up is a great idea, right? I'll feel better and more confident and it'll make everyone miss me.
Except. I was drunk.
And for some reason thought painting them in the dark was a great idea.
Oh, they look horrible!
and apparently I don't own any nail polish remover, so.
Today's going to be the best day ever!
😄😅😢☹22 -
It's a funny story. When at the gym I usually wear t-shirts with tech companies logos, from companies I've worked at. This guy comes to me and asks if I'm a programmer. Turns out he's also a programmer and we began chatting every time we were at the gym at the same time. Some months later he joined the company I work at and we're now colleagues. He's a pretty cool dude.1

Swag store feature request:
I can't wear any of the shirts at work with current dress code rules. Any chance we could get some polos or golf shirts with a small, embroidered ":/" on it?
I'd buy a week's worth of those.3 -
I live outside USA
Whenever I see someone posting
something like -
"My devRant stickers arrived!! Wooho see my devRant t-shirts ... "
That's the face I make
*Tries not to cry
Cries a lot11 -
The shirt from the google code in challenge came :D
I'll probably wear it inside only since it's one of those tight and small ones. I like longer and looser shirts because small and tight ones are too revealing.50 -
Hi guys! My name is Karina, I am a graphic designer from Ukraine. I want to show you my work about gopher) My husband is a golang developer and my little hobby of making him T-shirts with gophers has grown into the fact that I now draw them. Do you like my work?18
-
During scrum, we have a remote QA Engineer who literally includes what she and her child do during her lunch breaks.
"Yesterday during lunch, little Jimmy and I went clothes shopping during lunch and I got him some new shirts and they're 100% cotton"
NOBODY FUCKING CARES!!12 -
Wear headphones at home office. Not because I can't play it out loud, but when you go around in Iron Maiden shirts the wife gives you a hard time about listening to J-pop.4
-
Have you read the devRant update? @dfox and @trogus have done an amazing job of building a great community, keeping us informed of upcoming features AND asking for our input.
The upcoming features are 10x.
I can't wait for the store to open. Please tell me killer polo shirts and unique gifts just for devs make in before the holidays. Sending my wife up to buy me stuff.
All I can say is thanks to the devRant team and all of the community for the informative, funny and get it off my chest rants. I start and end my day with devRant and enjoy every rant.2 -

Most programming shirts/hoodies really suck. They fall into two categories:
1. Super lame pun quotes in an ugly font.
2. Memes transfer-printed onto cheap fabric
I'm not against puns, or quotes. I quite like the design from @AlexDeLarge
https://devrant.io/rants/830390/, and I've been looking for a nice shirt with Dijkstra's "simplicity is a prerequisite for reliability" on it.
But many do not put any thought into beautiful design, and shit like "No place like 127.0.0.1", "404 girlfriend not found" or "There are 10 kinds of people" really stopped being funny a decade ago.
Good design, colors & quality are so fucking important.
What are your favorite dev-related clothes?16 -
Is it just me or does this shirt make no sense? If your coffee was empty, then it would return true and you would keep coding. If it was not empty you would fill it.
Plus it's not a while loop, so unless this is some sort of recursion you wouldn't keep going....4 -

I have a small hobby.. T-Shirts.. I make them for myself sometimes, when I'm bored.. so.. I thought to myself.. If I don't get a T-shirt from devRant.. I'll make one myself))) I found myself making several designs.. Here's one example:

hi there,
i always wanted to have "developer t-shirts" but never liked those cheesy shirts with slogans or jokes everyone of us heard a thousand times. i always wanted something more classy - which shows i'm a programmer but also looks stylish.
so i started to make some designs and have uploaded them to teespring. it's called "foobar apparel" and everything is about foobar.
since this is my first t-shirt campaign i would love your feedback - what do you think about them?
of course i'm happy if you like them and want to buy some - mine are already shipping :)
here's the links: https://teespring.com/stores/...
if this is not the right place to post this here, just delete it - sorry.7 -
Talk with a co-worker who has a bit of a motivational problem.
Him: if I had more fun, I would be more productive.
Me: you're not here for fun, that's why they pay us.
Him: how are you motivated?
Me: by money.
...
A bit later.
Him: do you plan for retirement some day?
Me: no. By then, there won't be retirement anymore. We will eat fried rats in the street.
He starts understanding why I'm wearing black metal shirts.10 -
Few years ago a girl from our HR was hitting on my co-worker. She was asking all kinds of personal and professional favours just so he would come by her place, etc. One time she asked him to send her few C/C++ questions that she could use to thin the crowd of potential candidates before inviting them for the formal interview that he'd conduct later on. Obviously she wouldn't know if the answer is good or not but hell with it, he was ready to storm that pink fortress! So he came up with some mind twisters. She left two days later before he even reached the drawbridge. Sad.
So about six months ago he got fed up with some bullshit and left the company. Yesterday we had dinner. He was interviewing for quite some time being picky about which offer to accept and, surprisingly, during his last interview he got asked very familiar set of questions. He answered each. Then he couldn't resist and asked if the girl works there. The guy confirmed and, without a warning, called her. As if it wasn't awkward enough this is how I was told the conversation went:
- "Joan! You won't guess who I've got here! Your very good friend, Peter! Nope. Yeah, that one - how did you kn... Uh-huh. Oh? Yeah. Are you sure? I mean, I wouldn't. Deal!"
Then he turned out to Peter and said:
- "You know what? I wasn't going to hire you for shit because in my opinion your knowledge on the subject matter, how to put that gently, sucks ass... But apparently Joan here says you're professional and can handle everything we'll be able to throw at you. So when can you start?"
Needless to say he took the job. The fortress fell soon after and he wanted to meet to ask if I'm coming for the bachelor party. I'm ordering t-shirts with "batch mode off" in monospace.7 -
We're gonna make t-shirts connected with smart advertisements on it. I heard you are a programmer, I'll only need a web site and mobile app. If it work I may pay you. But you know it's seems quite easy I'm note sure you'll need money for that.
-
Recently bought some programmer T-shirts
made me popular, now I am known as the guy with the cool shirts.one of them has this on it:
2b || !2b ? "2b" : "!2b"
my fav joke now
I use these shirts to make friends and it actually works, you should also try ;)11 -

I hate silicon valley.
They enable so much of the state's and federal government's bullshit, the corporations and the banks subversion and destruction of society.
It's time to pop their fucking tech bubble.
From here on out, any time you hear or read the words 'startup', be sure to comment with "you mean speculative marketing investments?"
Because most tech runs on shit-tier semi-polished iterations of glorified CRUD anyway, thats all most of it is. And it 100% relies on grabbing network share through massive advertising and presence campaigns. A lot of vc money is being flushed straight down the toilet and this is a point to emphasize. Crash the fucking tech sector. Do it.
It'll have a knock on effect to the advertising space, which will put the hurt on google's bottom line when they and their ilk are already under pressure for all the poisonous, monopolist shit they pull like helping china build their surveillance tech.
Extra points for emphasizing "pot-fueled ideas sketched out on napkins while sitting in fucking chipotle, in unwashed sweater vests, originated by guys who are fresh out of college and never ran a business in their life. 90% of them fail in the first year. VCs and investor are losing their shirts." etc.
The entire dishonest fucking trade relies on other people's money, being bought out in either techno land-grabs or turf-protection e.x. atlassian acquiring trello, a **glorified todo app**.
Thats the business model. Hell go build your own and make a buck.
Build your own. Build something better and most of all... *fuck silicon valley*.
Let it burn, let burn, let it burn.10 -
It's easy to see what a person in my company do just by looking at their clothing. Money-guys with blue shirts and shiny shoes, tech guys with washed out jeans and a t-shirt with print. Then there's the bosses of tech guys, a hybrid with washed out jeans, sneakers and a poorly fit blazer for meetings. And then we have the designers, with their neatly trimmed beards, wearing a scarf all year round. And at last, project managers.. kinda like the money-guys but with sneakers for better mobility, and their right arm locked in a "holding cup of coffee" posture as they move from desk to desk like vultures overlooking others work.
And they say there is no dress code1 -
I had difficulty in passing one of my programming subjects during college because of my teacher(3~5years older than me). She's a pretty lady and always wearing lose shirts, I'm on the front row seats, so i always get distracted and can't focus on lectures and exams.
After that semester, i was happy that she's not my teacher anymore. LOL.2 -
I'm thinking of tattooing "reload the fucking debug-config you giant moron" on both of my arms and giving away all my long-sleeved shirts to charity to help me become a better programmer.

TL;DR: What's cool about your company or what you'd like to have in your company?
I work at a small company (<50 employee) but it has some time around (I'd say almost 20 years or so).
The thing is, the boss here is cheap or inattentive or outdated or all previous options. This translates into a company stuck in the 90's management ways. Well, maybe late 90's.
So we don't have a lot of 'cool' or nice things here; and I've been thinking of coming up with a proposal of a progressive update of some things that gives us (the employees) some sort of identity.
For example, I think that small things like personalized notebooks or post-its or t-shirts give the employees some sort of sense of belonging. We don't have any of that. The only thing we have are business cards and I find them completely useless since I don't visit customers and all my communication with them is via email.
One thing I find very cool is when one employee starts in a company, in their first day they get a 'welcome kit' (example picture): notebook, pen, cup, t-shirt... It may look like stupid shit but it's way better and more motivating than the "Sit here and that's it" welcome I got when I started here.
So I wanna do a proposal of this sort of things that we can adopt, and I wanna know what do you find cool in your company or what would you like your company did so you'd feel more confortable or 'proud' (maybe that's not the word) of working there.6 -
t-shirts are an ideal way to express one's frustration with the world, yet the devrant avatar t-shirts options are pretty benign.
Can't we have more ranty options?6 -
I'm disappointed by the lack of multi-monitor desktop for profiles.
Also lack of sarcastic t-shirts1 -
Conversion rates and shipping make it awfully expensive to get official t-shirts here in India, so I decided to experiment with t-shirt printing till the time I can earn enough to donate directly to open source foundations.
I call this design "FUCK YOU, AUTODESK!!"
(Yes it's literally just the logo. Yes I'm not a graphic designer)
Not too bad, but the print could've been better. Time to start tweaking things.8 -
Damn, there's so many different Hacktoberfest t-shirts available this year. Time to sit down and go "clothes shopping" I guess!
https://devswag.io/2 -
My goal before week 200 is to get people to agree that we need some nice polo shirts with devrants graphics on it.2

I struggle shopping for shirts since I'm somewhere between small and medium. THE GRID NEEDS MORE BREAKPOINTS1

Received a Full Stack Radio t-shirt and some new stickers this week, from the creator of Tailwind CSS. The shirt was printed in the wrong size; though I'm already happily expecting one in the right size, such things happen, and they fixed it before I even received this package (USA2BEL, 2 weeks in postage...)
Happy accident along with this; double the amount of stickers!! :D (and of course, double the shirts!)6 -
I turned my custom phone wallpaper into shirts, covers and other things. How do you like it? Would you wear it or would you improve it?

seriously considering migrating from code to selling snacks, becoming a barista or whatever

Meetings.. Was I not listening? Blame it on the ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
Maybe society has AEHD (Attention Expected Hyper-Delusion).
Seriously, who can pay attention to someone speaking AT you.
We have amazing magical devices one can enchant to do their bidding; Contemplating the details of such, often, is more enjoyable than what your rambling on about, talking head.
Not sorry, ;).
Also THANK YOU, you amazing MIT's (Manager of Information Technologies). A lot of you understand and even may use your underling employee's as a vented heat sync for your frustrations. I love what you do and thank the universe I don't have to engage myself in those activities. I have sympathy for the decision to give up your jeans and t-shirts for business attire; keep strong, your role is vital. <3
The insomnia is going to have to give me a break. Work in 3 hrs, time for a nap; and no, I don't take ADD medication (Amphetamine). I don't need a prescription; I can procure my own drugs, thank you.
Nor would I do them to get through work, that's drug abuse.5 -
damn
even hacktoberfest is going woke this year
no more t-shirts
some stupid digital pin probably that can forever spew out CO2 somewhere on some server farm in iceland or something
to be clear, i'm not a climate change denyer. but it stupid shit like this as to why we can't have nice things. all the incentives are backwards. change my mind
would have been the 5th shirt too... 😉
i'll probably print myself one anyway13 -

At work we develop for embedded systems. Using the heap can raise unknown effects sometimes. So we always try to avoid using it. To show our attitude regarding the heap we want to make T-Shirts like the No Ma'am shirts from Married... with Children but with No Heap instead of No Ma'am. Now we need a meaning of the acronym. Our currently idea is:
Nerdy
Opponents of
HEAP
E
Allocation
Practice
We do not find a good word for the E, we also aren't native speaker, thus we are not sure which synonym for word like based can be used in such context. So i want to ask if someone has a good idea or even a better idea for the whole acronym :)4 -
Kind of a rant towards devRant.
Thought I'd buy a t-shirt to support devRant, but a fat fuck like me is too big for 2XL shirts. Should I buy two and stitch them together maybe?
@dofx7 -
rant.type = feature.request
We should be able to select up to 5 (for example) shirts, shoes... And have the app equip random one each day.2 -
So i wasted last 24 hours trying to satisfy my ego over a shitty interview and revisiting my old job's codebase and realising that i still don't like that shit. just i am 25 and have no clue where am i heading at. i am just restless, my most of the decisions in 2023 have given very bad outcomes and i am just trying doing things to feel hopeful.
context for the interview story-----
my previous job was at a b2b marketing company whose sdk was used by various startups to send notifications to their users, track analytics etc. i understood most of it and don't find it to be any major engineering marvel, but that interviewer was very interested in asking me to design a system around it.
in my 1.2 years of job there, i found the codebase to be extremely and unnecessarily verbose ( java 7) with questionable fallbacks and resistance towards change from the managers. they were always like "we can't change it otherwise a lot of our client won't use our sdk". i still wrote a lot of testcases and tried to understand the working of major features.
BTW, before you guys go on a declare me an embarrassment of an engineer who doesn't know the product's code base, let me tell you that we are talking SDKs (plural) and a service based company here. their was just one SDK with interesting, heavy lifting stuff and 9 more SDKs which were mostly wrappers and less advanced libraries. i got tasks in all of them, and 70% of my time went into maintaining those and debugging client side bugs instead of exploring the "already-stable-dont-change" code base.
so based on my vague understanding and my even more vague memory from 1 year ago, i tried to explain an overall architecture to that interviewer guy. His face was screaming the word "pathetic" from his expressions, so i thought that today i will try to decode the codebase in 12-15 hours, publish a cool article and be proud of how much i know a so called martech system design. their codebase is open sourced, so it wasn't difficult to check it out once more.
but boy oh boy i got so bored. unnecessary clases , unnecessary callbacks static calls , oof. i tried to refactor a few classes, but even after removing 70% of codebase, i was still left with 100+ classes , most of them being 3000-4000 files long. and this is your plain old java library adding just 800kb to your project.
boring , boring stuff. i would probably need 2-3 more days to get an understanding of complete project, although by then i would be again questioning my life choices , that was this a good use of my 36 hours?
what IS a correct usage of my time? i am currently super dissatisfied with my job, so want to switch. i have been here for 6 months, so probably i wouldn't be going unless i get insane money or an irresistible company offer. For this i had devised a 2 part plan to either become good at modern hot buzz stuff in my domain( the one being currently popularized by dev influenzas) or become good at dsa/leetcode/cp. i suck bad at ds/algo stuff, nor am i much motivated. so went with that hot buzz stuff.
but then this interview expected me to be a mature dev with system design knowledge... agh fuck. its festive season going on and am unable to buy any cool shirts since i am so much limited with my money from my mediocre salary and loans. and mom wants to buy a home too... yeah kill me3 -
So my team (read: not the team at all) has decided that we are going to scrum. Someone ease tell me it's not as fucking tedious as it sounds. Sounds like it's just more meetings. Especially on this team which is actually already pretty agile. And the way our "certified scrum master" describes the retrospective sounds like it was designed by the type of shitlord PM that forces everyone to wear ugly t-shirts to the mandatory company barbecue for "team building". Please tell me he's just a terrible salesman.7

Google is giving Google home for adding action on console without even checking that if it is the same questions that had been submitted by other user
I made 6 Gmail account and created same flash quiz and got 6 Google home and T shirts which cost about 49000 Indian rupees
So why is Google spending too much on just an action?5 -
I mean Ruby has four letters and Rust has four letters. We do have the Just Stupid shirts though...4

Google are giving t-shirts with certificates now lol. Maybe they need to start adding phones to attract people to their data centers.3

Making magic machine learning stuff. Also t-shirts and shorts should be allowed. And free food. Uh what else... My own office1

Hacktoberfest is out of shirts already. It is a bit weird to be sad about not getting a free T-Shirt and borderline choosing-beggar, but damn this year's shirt looks sick.
I feel a bit cheated :(1 -
I cannot believe it's the middle of june and i am wearing socks warm shirts and sometimes jacket in my own house because of how fucking cold it is in the middle of fucking europe and in the middle of fucking "summer"13

What is for you the best web to buy developer merchandise (laptop stickers, t-shirts ...)? you know 😉2

I'm not that into open source contributions, but the hacktoberfest campaign this year caught my attention. There are so many challenges and events happening... I thought I should give it a try.
So far I got 2 t-shirts and had more fun than I thought.1 -
I just got paid, to spend, I've decided to reward myself with some t-shirts, right now I cannot afford devrant t-shirts, so help me choose any 2 from this here https://www.redwolf.in/
My budget is Rs.500/tshirt and I want to buy 2 of them..6 -
HONEST TALKS:
I found devRant when I search for a website that provides free t-shirts, stickers and hoodies.
would it happen with you?4 -
I own a small software company and we are going to make T-shirts for all my coworkers, mainly programmers.
We are about 20 people and I wanted to make the shirts witg a small company logo, but the primary should be dev related text, slogans, jokes or illustrations.
But I'm out of ideas, being a programmer myself, I though Dev rant would have some cool suggestions 😎
Hit me!10 -
How I got my first Free Swag?
I stole it?
Obviously no,
So it dates back to year 2016. After learning about open source project and working with few organisations, I noticed few contributors and developers with t shirts having logo of the company or organisation.
I mean if you see a guy wearing google tagged t shirt don't think he works in Google, he might have purchased it.
Next, I started searching for ways to obtain one. I reached and texted developers and all they told me were two golden rules.
1. If you develop something or update something, showcast it.
2. Always show the organisation what you do for them, even if it small contribution.
After this I started mailing and texting the contact mail id of companies and organisation I worked and contributed. Some texted me- no we don't have free items, some said we can't ship to India.
But out of 100 replies with 85 negatives, I recieved 15 positive replies. I was amazed to know that I'll recieve one.
You know what I was showered with
Stickers
T shirts
Laptop skins
Keychains
And many more.....
This Rant is for you to motivate and showcast what you do.2 -
I need the +1000 to match my shoes. :/
@dfox can we have sweaters instead of shirts for the winter?4 -
I guess this won't be new to any person here, specially this being a community of well-versed devs. But here it goes:
Its hacktoberfest time!! Make 5 contributions to public repositories and stand chance to win awesome swags and t-shirts from digitalocean.com !! 🎉🎊🎉
I have created a simple repo for beginners . Make a pull request now! https://github.com/root-ansh/...

You should produce
shirts that are boldly written ”Git Cherry-Pick Saves!”.
It has redeem me from messed up conflicts. conflited files = 89.
How the fuck am I going to review 89 files, when deadline is just two days from now.2 -
I have worked for a company where almost everyone want to leave that place. People receive gifts to compensate for being underpaid (dinners, chocolates, shirts) etc. Now they’ve just got GPTW certified. What a fuck? I can’t believe in these surveys and rankings anymore.1

#Hacktoberfest is about to end, and soon devrant would be filled with rants of people showing off their shirts and stickers... yeah, I'll be one of them. :P2

When will there be Haskell, Erlang or APL shirts?
I wanna have one with a cool language as my profile pic1 -
Total personal rebranding, mark zuck T-shirts, total CV changeover (change the weird perl & haskell skills, to javascript) you know cool kid stuff.
wish you all luck, am about to become rich, watch out.6 -
About five months ago, I started a new job as a manager in a nonprofit with approximately 30 full-time employees and over 100 part-time employees. In my department, I inherited one full-time assistant and 15 part-time direct reports. We are a public-facing department with a large social media presence.
The organization’s employee handbook has a clearly-defined business casual dress code policy: no jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, etc. However, everyone here dresses like a slob. On my first day, my assistant was wearing rumpled cargo shorts and a t-shirt with holes. My part-timers routinely show up in jeans, sweatpants, and the type of clothing I’d usually reserve for yard work. My own supervisor wears jeans and an untucked t-shirt.
I’ve always been someone who enjoys dressing up for work. My typical work wardrobe consists of dresses, skirts or slacks, blouses, and blazers. It drives me nuts when people look unpolished and unprofessional at work, but that seems to be the accepted culture around here.
Would it be out of line to enforce the company dress code in my own department, even if it’s not enforced anywhere else? Or am I just being an elitist?3 -
I want to stop drinking coffee but everywhere i look there is always wallpapers and cups and shirts telling me that this is our fuel reminding me about it and i always wonder if it will be possible for me to stop drinking it. I want to stop drinking it because i just can't control myself and i drink it all day while i'm at work and at the time i arrive home my stomach hurts. Every night i think "tomorrow i wont be drinking a single cup" and then here i am ranting about it.1

Modern hypebeast fashion capitalizes on self-hatred.
From a bullied outcast autistic kid, to beginning to realize things about myself, to the current point when I'm still struggling, but I'm validated, I changed, and so did my tastes in fashion.
Just the most expensive things (I had no money for), then — yeezys and that hypebeast BS, then — "luxury" formal stuff. But now I wear Vibram Fivefingers, leggins and simple t-shirts.3 -
Did anyone participate in last year's Hacktoberfest? I'm trying to figure out how they're going to send out that many shirts. The number has to be in the thousands.
-
in my country you can find Armani™ T-shirts for 10 TND ($3.00)
I wanna start a new fashion brand called Rust with many crabs and R logos everywhere without being a member of the Rust foundation.3 -
So I'm wondering if anyone here have claimed the free swag from Codeship? If I'm understanding things correctly you can get 10(?) T-shirts for free? Can anyone confirm or deny this? Sounds too great to be true ^^12
