At my study's final exams, I coded a system with login and everything included.
Showed it at the final delivery:
Fake client: awesome! So how do I logout?
Me: 😐
Me: 😶

Me: 😓
Me: 😭
Yeah, you couldn't logout.30 -
I thought it would be good prank change semicolons to Greek question mark in my boss' code where his delivery date is today. I thought he will spend like at least few minutes figuring it out.
He ran make, immediately figured it out and even corrected with sed only. Then yawned and looked at me with a smirk. Now I am getting paranoid what he will do as revenge46 -
Guy: "We just can't finish this in 1 month!"
Boss: "Yeah you can, I'll hire more people."
Guy: "... You know, a woman can deliver a baby in 9 months but 9 women can't deliver a baby in 1 month."21 -
Dev1 - hey we need to run some test to ensure delivery on our emails, how should we do it?
Dev2- I dunno, just put {RANDOMSTRING}@somedomain.com and send it. Dont bother to ask @Linux about it, it is a good idea
Dev1 - sounds like a great idea! I'll send a couple of thousands, ok?
--------- TODAY ---------
Me: Hey why are we on blacklist?14 -
When your delivery manager is the stupidest fuckin manager ever born :/
"If you have android code ready then why can't you create iPhone build unh - since A=B, B=C so 'C' SHOULD EQUAL TO 'A' right - so use android code and create iPhone build TOMORROW - don't change the code just create a build in 2 hours and then work on xyz project for other 6 hours since its in HIGH priority"
WHAT THE FUCKIN FUCK..
MY DICK = YOUR FACE MOTHERFUCKER :///15 -
We have new scrum master. First meeting together.
Project owner:
- I would give them time to wensday (2 days away) days to do migration
Manager:
- delivery is in Tuesday. can we have two teams to work on it so it will be done twice as fast?
Scrum Master:
- do you really think that if you get 9 women pregnant they would deliver you baby in a month?7 -
DHL, GET YOUR FUCKING SHIT TOGETHER.
I CALLED YOU TWICE TO MAKE SURE THAT MY DELIVERY WOULD ARRIVE TOMORROW. YOU CONFIRMED TWICE THAT MY PACKAGE WOULD BE DELIVERED TOMORROW BETWEEN 8am and 9pm.
THERE WAS A FUCKING SIGNATURE REQUIRED FOR SUCCESSFUL DELIVERY.
THEN WHAT IN THE FLYING FUCK IS THIS ‘delivered at your neighbors {number}’ NOTE DOING AT MY FUCKING DOOR?!
GO DROWN IN A FUCKING SEA OF INFECTED CUM.
FUCK YOU, I NEVER EVEN AUTHORIZED THIS.8 -
You know what really grinds my gears?
Seeing a 5-line comment, that have absolute no value, for a variable declaration.
Example:
/*

* String that holds a delivery address.

Me: code quality is important
Everyone: <no shit given>
Director: code quality is important
Everyone: yes, it is very important, hurray!
Fast forward few weeks/months...
Me: why this function accepts 14 arguments?
ShitDev: yhm, you know, we need to fix it... maybe
Me: why this exception is swallowed?
ShitDev: oh, really? yhm, yhm
Me: why this function is copy-pasted and repeated (20 LoCs)?
ShitDev: yeah, true, but we wanted to make it fast.
Me: Dear director, this project sux and its quality is shit.
Director: you're exaggerating, it can't be that bad, it works, right?
Me: <polishing CV>
ShitDev: got praised for delivery14 -
Found a security hole....
A fast food delivery service had an ID for every order it Said
"example.com/order/9237" - i go 9236... finds another persons order, address, and phone number
So What should i do?
i thought of making a crawler and then make statistics on everyones orders and send Them a link 😂20 -
I was hired as Project Manager.
After few days, I discovered that:
- I didn't have a team
- I was also the main and only developer
- all the projects I was assigned to were late
- I was also the account manager and I had to explain the delay to the customers.
And no, the salary didn't make up for the daily loss of reputation.
I lasted more than I thought, when I discovered that customers were not interested in delivery either, as it was a kind of money laundering scheme10 -
I've resigned 3 weeks ago. I have also completed my handover process.
Yesterday I was told that I have to work in the weekend and at night because project delivery date is the following week.
Kindly I responded that I have resigned and working on weekends and late nights won't benefit me in anyway now actually I wasn't benefiting from working on weekends and late nights even before my resignation.
Project manager is pissed off at me.
Oh well, it is what it is 🤷8 -

Delivery.
Friend: your what?
I explain, he walks away not giving a fuck.
But I don't care what he thinks, i love my new devDucks. Oh and special thanks to @dfox for the autograph. Well technically you just signed the customs declaration, but an autograph none the less.3 -
Ordered a new 34" Dell Monitor which should have been delivered today. The lazy ass mailman tried to scam my neighbor by telling him to pay 1000€ for the packet... (Amazon doesn't use cash on delivery)
FUCK OFF IDIOT, I HOPE YOU LOSE YOUR JOB BECAUSE NOW I HAVE TO DO YOUR GOD DAMN WORK AND COLLECT THE PACKET ON MY OWN.11 -
Last night I dreamt that I had done a large project for a customer.
Upon delivery the customer said:
"Now we just need you to deploy it, and then we're gonna sue Facebook."
"Nooo!", I thought to myself. "I used react for the project!"
It was a true licensing nightmare.3 -
New video card is arriving today.
I'm about literally counting minutes to the delivery time 😅
Since AMD develops native Linux drivers I thought this would be safe enough, let's see how that works out!15 -
Fucking co-worker!!
This asshole blamed the delay in delivery of the project on me.
I mean what the fuck dude, I was just helping you out. That wasn't even my job.
Pathetic people!5 -
Google Fit working perfectly!
Got out of bed at 4pm, walked to my desk, ordered home delivery. I have walked about 20 steps today.9 -
Client, two months ago: "Where is the new and complicated custom software?! We needed this a week ago!"

Feeling like I've gone back in time about 15 years!
Just told my CTO about various improvements we could make to the development process. Things like git, continuous delivery, agile project management apps such as Jira, task management such as Gulp, etc.
His response - "never heard of them. I bet they'll pass in a few months. Just another round of fads".undefined continuous deployment git fml i hate my job anyone hiring time travel gulp agile efficiency7 -

!Rant But after seeing this I laughed like hell I need to share this to all my dev folks.
Client: “Our next requirement, we need an elephant”
IT Team: But why don’t you adjust with a buffalo, even it is big…. and black?”
Client: No, we need an elephant only.
IT Team: Fine, I understand your requirement. But our system supports only a buffalo…
Client:We need only an elephant!
IT Team: Ok, let me see if I can customize it for you”
At the Offshore Development Centre :
BA – Client wants a big black four legged animal, long tail, less hair. Having trunk is mandatory. The same was documented, signed off and sent to offshore for development! Based on requirement all features are supported in base product (as buffalo), for trunk alone a separate customization is done.
Finally the customization is shown to client, and the client faints
Addon to this, testers completed their test case as above1 -
Had some bad experience with new phone delivery times so I decided to sent an email the SECOND the official 'this item will be sent within 48 hours' was passed.
Got an email today saying that my item has been shipped.
Got an email literally about 30 minutes later saying that the item has been delivered.
Now that's some God damn fast delivery 🤔.
Or is it just the slow syncing maaaaby...5 -
I switched to Comic Sans for any internal communication.
Those in delivery/support/sales/HR/emotional crap/professional buzzworders/etc no longer take me seriously and therefore I no longer waste my time with their BS.
If not an improvement in the more materialistic side of the career itself, certainly an improvement in the quality of life.3 -
I got a urgent call from a lead dev in another department. Needed data and services and her deadline was yesterday. I never heard of it, but worked late and got it done in 2 days. Delivery success, they had cake, speeches and praised my work apparently... I wasn't invited and didn't get any cake.5

Full year of cutting edge delivery on or before time, year end feedback time:
Manager: we r gonna give u lower rating this year because u we're not up to expectations
Me: but what expectations I did not meet
Manager: u completed all tasks before time and with quality and in half time compared to others...but unlike others u didn't slog...u should have slogged...
Me: fuck u...!! I resign!3 -
Admit it, in some of your projects you must have hardcoded something for an urgent delivery or last minute change :D6

I found a vulnerability in a food delivery app api that allows me to add credit to my account. I ate my first free meal today but i feel bad about it. What should i do 😞.
1- continue hacking free credit and eating free food.
2- stop and forget i found this bug
3- report the bug in exchange for money/credit
4- report the bug for free24 -
Good fucking job amazon, who would have thought opening the door to strangers is a great idea, everybody act surprised. Does sound a bit like it might have looked like an appartment building from their report (therefore wandering around), but I really doubt that.
"Guy who found two Amazon deliverymen wandering through his house: 'It's not just happening to me' [...] For Michael Lentini, his delivery last Saturday was a nightmare. According to his version of the story, an Amazon delivery man entered his house without permission — and wandered around the first floor before taking the elevator up to his bedroom."

Dear dfox and trogus,
Is it possible to arrange a secret santa kind of duck gift sharing campaign once a year? Not necessary need to be a xmas campaign. We can wait until you update the shopping cart process with the feature 😬
Each user can buy ducks for other users. You can contact the recipients for the address if you don't have yet and do the delivery.25 -
On an afternoon the day before delivery, we discovered a crashing bug. At around 2 AM, we had found the cause and fixed it. A short sleep at home, then back to office at 8 AM because the delivery was 200 devices containing that software, and they had to be updated manually because production had put in the old image.
We seized all available computers, even those from marketing who were... surprised. Half-way in the update, we calculated that we wouldn't have enough time until the freight service would show up.
So we asked the secretary that she should be a bit flirty to the parcel guy, invite him to a coffee and chat around to buy us more time. We closed the last parcel just when he figured that he had to continue with his tour.5 -
Nature of Startups
Sales executive go and sell the features which are not available in the product.
They come back and inform them to the manager, then the manager makes the request to dev team to do the features.
After all these the discussion will be made in the morning and delivery is expected by evening.5 -
So i ordered a vape because im a millennial and had it delivered to the office. Today they sent me an email, saying that the package is at the delivery company, if i wanna change the address, go to url.com/delivery?pw=ASD123

Any country with very vague/non existing laws on flying drones? I want to test my semi-autonomous flight system for midrange delivery and in Germany you can only fly with visual contact.29
-
You know those post boxes that are popular in europe that have a slit at the top and you drop the delivery in and it falls a bit? Yeah, guess how my new harddrive just got delivered.2
-
FML, I hate projects where managers (and other developers, too!) irrationally think that the only thing to do in the codebase is delivering new features and fulfilling change requests.
After 5 years of such approach, the code is bloated, and has hack-on-hack done against the original architecture, and management complains on the time to delivery a change, however asking them to get some time to "refactor" meets a deny every single fucking time because "we don't have budget".
Decided to leave the team. Any reason to stay there longer?7 -
The 5 stages of project management:
1 - the Mission:
Receive a project
2 - the Vision:
Over confidence and optimistic time estimation. Tell people how quick you can finish it.
3 - the Climax:
Adding unnecessary features. Try to be innovative. Think different. Feeling like a Rockstar.
4 - the Bargain:
Does not aware deadline is not far away. Reverse all unnecessary or impractical moomshot features. A bit stressed
5 - the Embarrassment:
Unpredicted obstacles or incidents. Late delivery or fail. Feel like a loser.1 -
Apparently some fucking moron bot has started sending spam messages to random people using my email address in the 'from' field.
From: my@address.fuck
Subject: I want to feel the passion with you.
I know because I just received a Delivery Status Notification containing the full spam email.

What is it with over qualified, over certified consultants that go around spouting "best practises", and then come delivery time, have the most absurd bullshit that a junior with 3 weeks of knowledge in a particular subject would know what you just served up is nothing more then a pile of shit that will not be deployed even if your livelihood depended on it.

Apparently USPS tracking numbers are case sensitive... I missed a delivery today so went online to check the status.

My manager from Germany says, "We have a saying in Germany. If you buy cheap, you buy twice. We must adapt it as, If you deliver fast, you must deliver twice". Scenario, faulty code delivery without checking the need of adoption work items.4

I recently found a vulnerability in a food delivery app where i can add credit to my account. as some of u suggested I decided to report it. Did anyone of you worked for a company where:
- there was a financial success
- code was clean and was enabler for fast delivery
- tests were professional
- CI/CD pipeline was working as expected
- features were developed in small chunks (few PRs per day)
- managers were trustful and were solving real issues to help you
- refactor was part of the everyday development
Is it even possible? Is there at least one company who achieved success doing the above?13 -
Computer Science student here, and it looks like my group partners have no idea what keeping classes short and straight to the point means.
The project is in C++, and I'm trying to understand this mess that they made, when they have a class called "Manager" that basically did EVERYTHING, whose header file has only the declarations of functions. 50+ functions. Only half of then documented, and most of them with apparently random names. The file has more than 200 lines of reading.
I've never worked with so much Spaghetti in my life yet.
Worst part: I spent time and effort organising some other classes, breaking down methods, untangling code and all that tedious stuff. But one week before delivery, they decide to delete all of my work, because they "didn't understand it" and didn't even think of asking me to explain the changes.
And if that wasn't enough, they refused to give me some percentage of the grade due to that code not being in the delivery.
I am so freaking done with those guys -_-9 -
Boss was angry complaining about delay in delivery on a recent project via our official group channel on Slack, he then uploaded this photo with me and my colleagues confused not finding a meaning to it. Lol, we just ignored and apologized.4

My day.
07.25 early ringing of phone.
I'm usually dead asleep till 9 o clock.
Went to bed at 01 o clock.
Something crushed at work, needed to be fixed ASAP.
No coffee. Tired. Stinking peace of garbage
08.45 o clock - super market delivery came earlier than expected, while la me was still trying to communicate necessary steps to resolve the issue.
Forgot to pre pay online.
Still had no coffee, still a piece of stinking shit, still tired.
Took me nearly 20 mins to get my PIN right.
Poor delivery guy had unpleasant call from chef, I needed to deescalate.
Back to work, people angry for me being 20 mins away in midst of chaos.
Me back to fixing stuff.
Done at 09.30.
One of these days where everything you touch becomes a large pile of poop and no matter what you do it's wrong.
Yep. The rest of the day went pretty much as bonkers as it started.
At least no work on weekend.
Yay.1 -

In the pandemic era i have become allergic to delivery fees. Fucking $5 to get pizza delivered? Fuck you I'll take the 15 minutes it takes to go down to the damn restaurant! Pisses me off sometimes.
Maybe it's because i enjoy getting out more since I've started working from home, but tbh i don't even care, because paying $11 to have someone else bring your groceries to you just makes me irate.14 -
I wont take privacy laws seriously as long as my pizza delivery service needs a fucken phone number as mandatory field.6
-
My manager's boss just commited on a delivery date a month from now. We dont know what is to be delivered, nor does the client. We are supposed to work on a platform that we know nothing about. And of course the catchphrase is : yeah just use big data and spark. I'm dying...5

People delivering flowers to the office, guy walks in with a massive set in a huge case, delivery guy says:
Either he is setting the bar really high, or he's in trouble. Here I am, at my desk, just being the only single person in my office. Writing a SQL proc for the same report I have been working on for the last month. Happy single awareness day everyone.3 -
Got my stickers. High quality and looks so good that I don't even want to put it on my laptop. I guess I will try to sell it on the black market.

Software:
added a "Coke zero" to my order and the app asked to show my ID to the delivery to make sure I'm over 18.

Ordered a milkshake instead. More appropriate for my (mental) age.15 -
Just fucked up two times in one week.
I was supposed to send alpha version of our app and also server configuration. I ended up sending configuration for completelly different server.
In second delivery i included correct configuration but forgot to include some jars ...1 -
Can we please stop using continuous delivery on mobile. I don't want to update your app every other week just because you decided to change a comment.
Also Bugfixes and improvements doesn't say anything as a changelog!5 -
Today I wanted to activate the gzip compression on the site of a customer before delivery.
Unfortunately the hosting service (the most popular in France) did not activate this module on its servers. Why in 2016, this module is not enabled by default !15 -
Another unrealistic deadline from our non-software developer PM.
He agreed to client upon delivery of a complete system consisting of 4 micro-services in Node and 4 front-end Angular application integrated with each micro-service accordingly.
Project Delivery date is December 31. I have told him It is impossible to deliver complete solution on December 31.
Now he wants me & my team to come to office even on weekends.
What an idiot !5 -
I am now the only experienced developer and the person responsible for the delivery of a project AFTER WE ARE ONE MONTH PAST THE DEADLINE! All because user wants to replace the old system with new system with all EXACT SAME FUCKING FEATURES!

Working from Home email translations:
“I don’t feel well” - I’m hungover
“I have an appointment” - I’m hungover
"Car won't start" - I'm hungover
“Delivery coming today” - There’s actually a delivery coming today... but I’m also hungover3 -
"How many time do you need to close this task?"
"Mmh I guess 3 days and half"
"Ow..the delivery is this evening, is that a problem?"
Dude. Seriously, what the fuck!2 -
Manager redesigned large parts of a website template that I have been working on.
now, this did not bother me one bit but I am pretty sure it has to do with the delivery of the message. She was so happy about the redesign and it really did look better. I could not find it in me heart to not comply and just be happy. Plus she always lets me come in super late :V and she really is pretty and very nice to us.
oh well.2 -
I often wonder if our clients seriously think we have an all-knowing crystal ball of wisdom when they send tickets like "Cannot send emails - please check" while they have like 10 servers and email delivery is a complex matter on its own already.
If I didn't care what our clients think, I'd reply with equally informative email of "Maybe, who knows"...1 -
I just had a package delivered from Hong Kong to Sweden in 21 hours. And estimated delivery was 5-7 days. Good job DHL. Oh, but I wasn't home, so I never got it.4

Everyone: Parcel delivery sucks because the couriers often don't even ring and just claim nobody was there.
Me: Can't confirm - giving these (poorly paid!) people 2 EUR tips works like a charm because they do remember that.7 -
During my rookie days I used to glorify the fact that I wrote production grade code using vim.
Lol, explains why I would delay on delivery6 -
Meeting of 10 minutes to review and grade a project that took months to make. Apparently your supervisor giving you proper attention is not important enough, compared to him getting his food delivery.

// Delivery manager rant part #2
When one of your many stakeholders asks "why isn't feature X built yet?"
Response: have you seen the state of production lately???? Do you really think your item is top of our priority list right now? -
Can "being lost in Hot Network Questions column of StackOverflow" be a valid reason of late delivery of code?1
-
Haven't ranted in a while so here it goes.
Head of product took me (senior dev) to a high value client workshop/demo session and over the course of two days found the reason behind why the dev team has been pushed to the limit as of late and sales/product team has been making promises to clients without checking with dev leaders on reasonable delivery dates on massive new features.
I tried my best to manage expectations by differing talking about delivery dates by saying "lets discuss that with the team" rather than giving out dates right now. But as soon as the meeting ends he sends an email to the client confirming delivery dates on features that we have done no research on or even specialize in!
Please tell me this is not how well established businesses work or is that the new reality of things. In either case I wanna find a new job :/2 -

You know what's fun? When your client insists you use an agile process with a delivery at the end of each sprint, then proceeds to bitch at each release at the features that weren't implemented yet. The thing isn't even slated to be done until 4Q 2018 and is on schedule/early. Glad I am not on that team . . . yet.
-
Today is a deadline.
I think this project is going to be a disaster in delivery.
But hey, at least it's over for me after today. Yay?4 -
To be honest, I'm not as excited as I was 6-7 years ago when our tech industry seen a big leap, where these ML/Deep Learning algorithms were out performing humans, Apache Spark out perfomed Hadoop in distributed computing, Docker/Kubernetes are the new phenomenon in software development and delivery, Microservices architecture, ReactJS virtual DOM concepts were so cool.
Really though, I've come realise that these software trends come and go. All you need to do is adapt and go with the flow.3 -
"Can we do X?"
Yes, we can do almost anything you want.
"Can we have it ready by last month?"
No.
"What about 2 weeks ago?"
Not feasible.
"Yesterday?"
Sorry I don't think we can.
For real though, how do you deal with unrealistic delivery expectations? I'm not sure if I'm supposed to keep saying no to everything, or if they keep asking in hopes that maybe this time it'll be ok.2 -

Maybe I can install Mint on that if I go for a 5.8 mainline kernel. At least it has Intel wifi, not Broadcom.12 -
No matter how much I try my boss keeps trying to shove future or unsolicited features on every fucking current sprint as if we weren't delayed already...
Wtf dude? We get paid by delivery, let's just fucking deliver what they expect by each deadline and move on...5 -
If the client wants too increase the scope or change requirements, that's fine but put the difficult decision in their hands.
Do you want to delay delivery or drop something else. -
There is this friend of mine, total business profile, working in banking audit for MNEs. The guy is in trouble with his PowerPoint, asking me if I can assist because "as you working in IT". I'm angry today. The customer's code reviewer blocked my delivery because variables of type "Context" are abbreviated as "ctx".7

Customer signs off that work is complete via email.
Customer calls back saying the delivery is incomplete.
I tell customer they need to QA better and we can fix it.
Customer is no longer a customer.2 -
Microsoft installed an update that I didn't want and now my computer is unable to boot into Windows. It either constantly reboots before the windows logo or sits at attempting repairs forever.
Why is modern computing such a dumpster fire?
Apple is wall to wall garbage in every capacity.
Windows is the most expensive ad delivery platform you can buy, while also trying to be Apple.
Linux doesn't work unless your computer is years old.20 -
So I've been learning by doing node/express/angular stuff for the past 3 months at this startup.

My boss called my team for a meeting, where he pointed out the difference between "doing what we can" and "doing our best".
He later said he was dissatisfied with our lack of commitment with our latest, biggest project , and expected an improvement.
That would be all fair and well, were it not for the fact that, because of his delivery date of said project, we returned home four times. In the previous two weeks. -

A banking application helps businesses attract new customers, increase audience loyalty, and improve the quality and speed of service delivery. The banking application can also act as a new marketing channel and a tool for detailed analytics of user actions. What do you think about it? Is it convenient to have a banking application on your phone and always at hand?8

Ordered some fucking computer glasses (which filter out the blue light). Been having red eyes and excessive fatigue these last months, plus sneaky headaches.
We're in 2018, and fucking delivery companies still think that people are at home waiting for their parcel. They came yesterday, fucking saw I wasn't there, they left a fucking delivery notice when my parcel does not require a signature!! I mean, what's the use of a P.O box if it's only there to host spiders in summer?
Plus on that stupid delivery note they've put a QR code - "please use the given code or scan this QR code to change your delivery options" - which is unreadable, AND they didn't give me the fucking code.
Be flexible for fuck's sake, and evolve with your time. I hate Slowtzerland for that - conservative, late, immuable. Especially in "social" services. 99% of the population is away from home from 6 to 18, time to fucking print that in your brain and get on with it.
Now I might wait until Saturday so I can get them glasses...5 -
You've got to be kidding me, you really think you can waltz in after a 2 months asking me to fix something which supposedly "suddenly" popped up which I guess you didn't notice 2 months ago during project delivery? And then even dare ask WHAT you are being charged for? ESPECIALLY when working on a Sunday? You can die in the gutter.4
-
Just a random thought.. instead of sending stickers (or the stress ball for that matter) from USA to someone in India, why can't there be distributed 3D printing services spread across the globe, so that it's just a matter of delegating the delivery to local deliver services in the country/city? Sounds like an idea? 🤔2

Update to this rant: https://www.devrant.io/rants/210575
Now, roughly one week before the revised delivery date, they realize that we won't be able to finish the workload on time and they are thinking about moving the due date...

Argh fuck you Microsoft for blocking my precious mail server. I can't believe that you were the only one. Even google accepts my mails with every fucking test passed...
Oh and not to mention that in the no delivery report you are referring an error code which is not present on the linked troubleshoot page. Thank you once more, you piece of shit.
Should have listened to the articles about why I don't want an own mail server...15 -
Friend from a company I did an integration delivery with sent me this lovely slack discouse. I had no idea their HR lady let her freak flag fly at work 😏
Wonder how many years she's been casually tossing that one around.3 -
I have a saying that always gets me confused looks at work: “More is more”. What I mean by that is every time management asks for a new system, that system needs to be built, maintained, upgraded (code and infrastructure), etc. My point is that new systems are not free of cost after delivery. Am I alone in thinking that way?4

mom: son you received a package
me: wow 😍 (expecting stressball)
mom: oh nice, it is great
me: wow (so fast international delivery)
mom: it an invitation to a state level event organised by state government
me: yeah, mom i applied for it.
stress over stressball -
So a package came at my door today and it looked like it had stickers in it. I thought they were my devRant stickers and became so overjoyed I happily signed the package and quickly went back in without reading the sender's name.
And then I opened it up and it had a phone's battery.
My sis-in-law sent her phone's battery and asked me to buy and send her a replacement.
Feels fucking bad, man... -

When you are creating a tool for a direct client that has no idea about development. She asks you to develop a tool to open a log file and format in a specific way inside Excel.
Ok, this is simple. In about 4 hours I can do that. After delivery and the client has tested, they answer: "Oh, it's working fine. You just forgot to include Y".
Of course Y were not in the initial scope. They supposed it was as it would makes sense to them, but at first they just asked a tool open a log. Ok, not a problem, I will implement it.
Weeks after implementation they answered it was not working with another specific file format (from a not industry default tool), but they have this client and my code should work with it too.
Ok, let's implement that. I had to change some functions and with some extra hours I could make it work. Once more, after delivery, they said the tool has to use a specific formatting for this file extension, that was not only different to the others, but I had to rewrite the entire code to make it work.
At least they paid me some extra hours...4 -

I always promise myself that I won't take any freelance projects during that specific semester because I need to study for college and already have projects to do.

Dude. Listen.

WHY IS IT SO FUCKING HARD TO DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE FROM MEGACORPS??
Yes, am looking at you EMC, Oracle and IBM. Either they have tons of portals-e-delivery-shittorama or their softwares suddenly disappear for n amount of time without notice. Mix this up with broken links or CONSTANTLY REBRANDING YOUR SHITTY PRODUCTS SO YOU NEED TO HIRE A PERSONAL ASSISTANT THAT ONLY WORKS WITH TRACKING THESE PORTALS TO HELL

What is it with shipping websites sending you an email saying "hey, here's your tracking number and tracking URL!" and then that *very same link* saying "this tracking number doesn't exist, it can take a few days to show up sometimes, try again!" I'd understand if this was one knock-off weird company, but it seems to be *all of them*.
Seriously, how hard is it to just initialise a tracking number at the point you send that email so it at least shows a "parcel not yet picked up" or similar message? I know it doesn't make much material difference to tracking but it just reeks of bad UX and lazy / incompetent devs.7 -
Teach students the importance of clean code/architecture and testing. Even if they dont yet understand the more complex topics such as architecture, they should understand why quality is important and that software is a craft more than a science. You cant just apply principle X and insert design pattern Y and profit++. You actually have to think and constantly improve. AND TEST.
Think I would probably also cover things like build automation and continuous delivery. These are now important things for junior devs to know about going into companies. -

I hate every private package delivery service!
I ordered two things from the same shop. The first delivery came on Monday and because I wasn't home I got a notice which said I have to get the package from the pickup shop right around the corner. So far, so good.
Second delivery should come on Wednesday. I wasn't home again, so I got a notice to get the delivery from the pick up store....30 MINUTES AWAY!
Because the delivery should be quite heavy, I organized a friend with a car to help me.
At the pickup store I I got the package and it wasn't as heavy as I expected.
At home I opened the package and noticed that stuff is missing. In my order email a discovered, that there should be two package.
Slightly pissed off I drove back to the pickup store to get the other package, but it wasn't there.
Because the the delivery guy brought it to another pickup store...30 MINUTES AWAY IN THE OPOSITE DIRECTION OF MY HOME! WITHOUT A NOTICE!
And of course the shop was closed at this time :[
This wasn't the first time stuff like this happened with private delivery services. I cannot understand why people are ranting about the state postal service and prefer those private companys.3 -
We have a delivery specification. It's documented and it tells every developer how deliveries have to be done. Every *FUCKING* *SINGLE* *STEP*. For most deliveries you don't even have to think much, just check the steps.
Why do I always stumble across deliveries that are missing vital parts so if you want to reconstruct some project status, because someone is on vacation or has quit, you can't or need hours of investigation? Am I a private investigator, or what?
Am I the only one who tries to make his work comprehensible? -
These days i like to think of our data privacy as that of an amazon package delivery between person A to B
- Person A wants a packet of condoms and guns, but don't want society to know about it
- person B wants to send guns and condoms to B
- Amazon is willing to provide transportation with a pinky promise that it won't tell anyone about the delivery.
- Thus B gives the condoms and guns to Amazon wrapped up in hard box hoping that Amazon or anybody else won't open it. Similarly A receives the packet hoping that nobody else got to know about it.
But the problem is a LOT of people could possibly know of the contents, even if A or B aren't willing to share details
- Amazon can look into it.
- government can stop the amazon car transporting the packet and force them to look into it.
- some 3rd person(aka hacker) could fool the delivery truck and get access to packet contents.
=======================================
and this morning, my neighbour, A very radical hindu supporter, frustrated by the recent tablighi jamaat fuck-up , gave a very strange statement "you know in future, the government would pass a law which will allow them to hear these ppl's calls /whatsapp messages. This will allow government to detect and take actions on every of these anti-national scums"
I wanted to say WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU HOPING FOR, BOOMER? THAT'S CENSORSHIP!! but i couldn't say because his illiterate vision is no longer a hope, i can see it becoming reality.
Personally i am equally angry with that whole incident and how that community handled it. But how can anyone ask for censorship, just because a few elements misused it? The problem lies with thise elements and people who support their thoughts not the whole community or the communication medium.
From what i have heard in the recent US and indian law news, they are essentially trying to peek into the data we send to each other legally.
So going by the package delivery analogy, its like government now wants to have every amazon delivery happen in transparent boxes in a transparent truck, just because a few people ordered illegal items via amazon delivery.
This world is going crazy and stupid.3 -

I live in an apartment building and ordered a DVD from Amazon, 2-day delivery on Friday. So was supposed to arrive yesterday but got a "Delivery was Attempted". I said ok probably the postal service being lazy. Some days they just don't deliver even though they should...
They tried again today but I get notified of the same problem. Now I'm pissed so finally contact Amazon. Turns out they didn't use USPS or any of the big shippers.

Been working on a backend-service, sending notifications to our app. Shit didn’t work in backend. I made some adjustments, commited and pushed. Didn’t think it would work and just went home.
Our tester had a app-version connected to my dev-server(Continous Delivery from my last commit). Got an email. ”I see you got the notifications working”. I had a high polling-rate in backend for testing. He got spammed lol

YSlow, go away! Stop dropping my score for not using CDNs! I used your fucking CDN for delivery and it was tripling my load times! I know what I'm doing, now kindly fuck off!

Sometimes I envy those people whose work is purely clock on / clock off, meaning those that can leave work and switch off to that entirely (delivery driver; mcdonalds etc). Having the time to focus on other things. I have never had that luxury, work consumes far too much of my time, even when not working i am thinking about it. I want the time to pursue my other love which is music, and playing my bass. I like my work but sometimes i fucking hate this path i'm on. Oh well FML.4

My second client asked me to install a NAS. After listening to his request, I gave him a link to a Synology on Amazon and told him that once he receive the NAS, I will install it.
After one week, no news from him. So I called him and he has answered that he had some trouble with the delivery.
And today, I think I lost my second client and that he will never call me back...

Any devs here from Canada or who have worked there?... know any?
I'm strongly considering immigrating to Canada to give my future family a better chance at life (My current country has a highly unstable political climate).
Just wondering how the dev lifestyle is living there (for the average dev) i.e.
- Quality of life - I know I can't buy a house, but what can I rent? A house/ flat/ box?
- Hows the dev scene / culture?
- Work life balance / Work environment frustrations (I hear they are very politically correct and this may be a conflict with my blunt nature)
- Income Tax vs Government service delivery, I expect tax will be high due to free health care/ education but are they worth it? nb; any service delivery beats what I get...
Any feedback is welcome and will be appreciated.16 -
Hey guys,
I was wondering what setup (especially laptop/tower) you would use for coding at work it you could chose freely (I know some of you can).
I like the Lenovo thinkpads and like to have at least 16gb of ram (32 are better) and some powerful cpu like an i7. Usb type c, power delivery and useful Linux driver support are must-have.
How about you?14 -
What do u guyz think about Amazon Key?

Delays. Delays in payment, delays in scope and spec delivery, delays from the graphics guys, delays from the X guy, the Y guy, this company, that company. No matter what the reason, delays leave that leave the Dev waiting and sitting around despondent and losing interest faster than the second to latest viral video.

Our project using Agile methodology, we have every day stand-up meeting(scrum meeting) that normally end around 10 to 15 minutes with 7 ppl.
One day The Project Owner came and join our stand-up meeting that cost us like sprint planning
And The Project Owner did not stop there, he come again next day for the 1 week.
Because of that our product backlogs and Sprint Planning goes haywire.
We failed to delivery what we planned for that project. -
When you are about to finish a 4 month project with a client and he decides to hire a 'head of innovation' person one week left to project delivery. F*ck it, now you have to change whatever you agreed on those previous 30 meetings.1

I just worked on a project for 4.5 weeks and delivered my code to a stream. Just after the delivery, I get a mail from my program manager saying they've moved to a different stream.

I don't know much about the biology, but from what i know, a virus is never treatable. In due course of time we might generate a medicine that will modify our immunity system to fight against it, like polio and when this medicine is available, all the human race would get it and that's how this epidemic ends.
Until then, we all would need a total social isolation at some instance of time, as it is being done now.
But here is my main question : what to do until then? How will the economy survive? General stores, grocery markets, restaurant and fast food, clothings and many other industries and dominantly involves direct interaction.
Shutting down and going online is also not the solution. Poor/small businesses can't afford it. companies like amazon , dominos, etc have huge network of delivery guys for e shopping, but won't that be soon banned too?
Looks like our technology in robotics and drone delivery is too slow to be proved effective in this situation . I am hoping the technology would be a solution to such situation.
What are your thoughts about it?4 -
"Copy the file sent to our warehouse management system to another folder so we can keep track of the deliveries we sent data for."
Why these geniuses think that having a folder with file names containing timestamps (and not delivery numbers) would make their job easier is beyond me... -
I spent the last 1.5 hours trying to optimize delivery of two 8.0KB JS files. It didn't work, at all tried like everything I could find. At the end I initialized it in angular json and made it load regardless. Made me realize that it is not made for optimization.1

Question for you guys.
I have an Android app in which you can track when and how much you have worked, etc., especially aimed at (food) delivery drivers. I know those kind of apps already exist, it's a hobby project :). But I have no idea what to call it.
Any suggestions?3 -
Not really the worst but it happened last week. Our lead Dev reviewed a pull request based on works that have been validated several times.
Suddenly, 5 minutes before leaving to take a plane for the week, he tells me that everything is to be refactored because it has no semantical sense, even if it worked perfectly and could be refactored later.
He told me that the day before the delivery and rewriting and restesting everything that had been done took 2 days, several out of worktime hours and huge stress phases. The delivery had to be delayed twice.
I'm easily stressed and a lot of things went by with bad timing (one other coder who could help me was not present, another had to leave early for his kids etc...)
That refactoring was unnecessary but it gave a bad impression to our client and made feel bad fr something I wasn't responsible for.2 -

"Come on, people! Engage with my post!"
It does not works like that, obviously.
And yet every single fucker who comes to give some mandatory training says something like this.
Bitch, if no one engages with your "chair safety PowerPoint", it is because it sucks. Not necessarily due to your delivery, the material itself sucks.
So stop asking for engagement and just give us the quizz and we can all get back to work already!1 -
At last, I've got a second monitor. Unfortunately I'll have to wait a week for it to arrive. Which will be pretty annoting.2
-
Ok, So I am just fed up with these project delivery dates. These are the most irritating aspect of any project.
My current project is already delayed 3 times, because of the optimistic biases of the team lead.
Developers were forced to work over weekends. The QA cycle is taking more time than the dev cycle itself, and it's very irritating waking up with a new bug in the JIRA notifications.
Everytime we reach the delivery dates, there will be multiple bug items on each and everyone's plate that you just can't release the product.
I want to know if anyone feels the same ? How does your management takes care of these delivery dates ?1 -

I like ups. They are one of the biggest airlines in the world, deliver incredibly fast over incredible distances, but
Fuck their website!
At least they've updated the design but the functionality is just garbage. I wanted to track a package that is on its way to me. And I wanted the delivery person to know that he could put the package in the garage if nobody is home. I had to register for two different services (God knows what's the difference) and even then ups somehow knew an old address (I believe I managed to get stuck there In the past) which I couldn't remove. I found the option to tell the delivery person to put the package in the garage in some random menu but I don't know if it is for the right address or package.
Why is it so fucked up? Everybody else (DHL for example) has a decent site on which all the stuff is easily manageable.4 -
One of the things that gives me a lot of satisfaction is doing integrations. One customer has a good architecture, and they chose to put their metrics database with billions of records in Apache Cassandra. Which is pretty cool! A business consultancy that is helping them grow a lot, has implemented PowerBI and the dashboards are really good, but the most important reports will be based on this gigantic Cassandra database. We just delivered a quick integration using Apache Spark. Small project, fast delivery and everyone happy. Is so good. Mission accomplished feeling.1

Has anyone been in the situation when you order something on company's expenses, got your expenses manager approved, get the reimbursement in your account. And the item you ordered got refunded because of some delivery problems?
Will any company can find out of I have pocketed the money, in this case I haven't. I just bought same item from local shop but my manager is unaware if whole thing except he approved my expenses.
Should I drop a mail to my manager regarding this? It's been 1 week already.10 -
Have a question about email service providers. Specifically inbox delivery and warmup. Over the years I gathered a ~200k email database of players from my projects. I cleared them by using debounce.io and now I have 100k clean emails. That means I can send a mass newsletter and bounce rate should be good. Now my main question is what email services provider should I use? For email client I thought of setting up sendy.co, for hosting it use sendybay.com and for smtp use pepipost.com But the problem with sendy is that it sends emails without any delay. Like 2-3 emails a second. Is there a difference in terms of inbox delivery and domain reputation wether I send all emails in bulk with sendy or should I try to keep low profile and send lets say 1k a day? I have friends who use amazon ses and they are able to send even 100k a day, given that emails database is cleared(valid working emails) and bounce rate is low.6

Weird thing is, The reason it was not delivered was because of "network problems"...3 -
It is really really really sad, when you tried to make a complex thing work in many days. When you tested, it was working amazingly. When you were about to finalize delivery after one week, it fucked and stopped working. Now either you fix it, or find another BLOODY algorithm! 😠

Does the company you work at have a CI/CD pipeline (Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery, e.g. with Octopus Deploy)?
Sometimes it surprises me how many companies don't have this..10 -
Jesus I'd think with all these insane stories, atleast someone would already employ me to do the work, and instead of that I just work delivery
-
Wish devRant can show the timeline of where the Swag stickers have reached in the delivery Pipeline. Eagerly waiting for my Swag Stickers to arrive.

No it’s ok you can power trip on me that’s fine, it’s just now your delivery is going to be months late. So who’s fault is it really?
Fuck you - fight me bitch. -
The Project Manager changed the project from scope driven to date driven with the teams giving him only t-shirt sizing estimates. Wish us luck...

I wish impostor syndrome wouldn't be a thing. After reading some blog posts I feel like I lucked out and I should just quit this and become a delivery man or something.5

Damn Admob information delivery -.-
I got restricted ad delivery a second time in a month and they do not have a proper support...
I have an app which generates around 100k impressions a week and it kind of hurts when there is anything wrong with the ad implementation. it worked for over 2 years straight without any flaws.
after the last ban i even limited the amount of ad delivery by hardcoding a max amount per day. But the fucking lack of information makes it impossible for me to write fixes on my side -.- i do not even know which ad exactly is causing the invalid traffic - and admob is not really helpful when it comes to providing informations.
i totally get that admob wants to keep their algo a secret but for fucks sake how am i supposed to work with those ppl if they do not work with me?
I now need to stress around with binding alternative ad networks - wish me good luck writing adapters for xamarin... -
I hate pl-sql and data warehousing. For this project we're extracting from source tables using a generic method equal for every student, changing the data and then copying to a table for analytics.
Everyone's project is fine. Mine occupies 90mb and exceeds the quota already. Delivery due in 2 days... So much for that cs grad. FML. -
Hello devrant,
Need guidance about QR code based coupon system.
In my restaurant I sale few food items. My 50+ customer bought food daily (on delivery). They are asking me for coupon system like I sale one sandwich for half 30 INR , they bought 3-4 per day.
So they can buy coupon of 100 sandwich on every delivery my delivery boy will scan QR code of customer and their sandwich count will decrease accordingly.
This will apply for every food item.
Can you suggest me current software for this.1 -
Delivery guy tried to make small talk, and I immediately got a visual migraine aura. Coincidence? Arse.4

I am bidding on freelancer for more than 2 months with the lowest charge with 1 day delivery but not getting any project. In fact nobody is getting selected for that project. At last what I see is No Freelancer Selected..
What the hell is going on Freelancer??
You need to change your protocols..or something..
Are the employer just making fun of us??2 -
How did you get the people from Info Security and Compliance on board this continuous delivery thing ?
I am being asked to run antivirus scans on my own code and binaries as part of build.
Is this common practice? Am I missing something?
I am going to deploy stuff on Azure PaaS. I can understand having malware scan agent on azure VMs scanning the infra, but this?4 -
I'm thinking of making a email validation api that can check if an email address is temporary disposable email, tld domain, from a free email provider, mx detals, delivery availability etc.
Is this even a good API idea?6 -
Guys, about Continuous Integration/Delivery using SVN as repo... What is the best approach? It would be nice if it could trigger the files that should come to prod by commit message or something like that...
Thank you.3 -
Have you ever needed to compromise the architecture for quick delivery?
So not to go into details but imagine this:
You start with a surface are that will fit a few items, but you need to stretch it to its limits.
When you start to populate it you realize the architecture is wrong, but delivery day is close so you make it work anyways.
When launching you need to prop it up with something, you find some 3PP that was not really meant to function this way but if scaled up it just might do.
For it to work long term you need a platform to put it all on, it may be slow as to tortoise but it will have to do.
Whenever this happens to me I think it has worked in the past (ex. Terry Pratchett) and I continue to help making the world a more magical place.
Where a one in a million chance will always work but that’s not a bug… it’s a feature.1 -
Hello, anybody knows about any api that can parse delivery parcel tracking code and detect wich transporter it is and get the tracking infos ?2
-
Well, it has been 4 months since I sent the mail for the stickers and the ball, and still haven't gotten them.
They probably got lost mid way 😔
And the only thing i can wonder is that there is a delivery guy somewhere, letting loose all of his anger on the ball which was meant for me... 🙈
Keeps me awake at nights😑🙊3 -
I need to pick one terminology for shipping so I don’t forget my function names, css classes and labels.
I’ve used a mix of “Shipping”, “postage” and “delivery” and now I’m confused :-/1 -
Ok. Wtf?!?
Our platform architect gives a damn about continuous delivery.
Today I asked the architects for help, because bamboo is not able to trigger a deployment plan by changes in repository branch pattern release/x.x.x.
He cancelled my question with the statement "if we have the Kubernetes environment, we have more valuable things to work on".
Generally CD is no rocket-science and it is achievable with reasonable effort! -

none of the food delivery apps coupons ever seem to work... Even the ones that popup when app starts...
Is there some trick to it that I'm missing?
Got one for 20% off but at checkout said was invalid ...
Are there ever any coupons that actually work?3 -
Everyday a piece of software or technology fails to delivery. From banking software to the internet of things. I fucking hate developers sometimes.

Can’t tesla’s self driving cars used to deliver Groceries ?
Grocery delivery should not be a life or death choice for people3 -
I am a technical writer. I have good knowledge of Node and Angularjs so my all blogs are related to these technologies. But now, I want to write something related to online food delivery services. This business is in demand at this time and mobile application is the reason. Any advice or suggestions related to online food delivery mobile app development would be great for me.
Currently, I am collecting some information through this resource https://iglobsyn.com/on-demand-food...
