So I got the job. Here's a story, never let anyone stop you from accomplishing your dreams!
It all started in 2010. Windows just crashed unrecoverably for the 3rd time in two years. Back then I wasn't good with computers yet so we got our tech guy to look at it and he said: "either pay for a windows license again (we nearly spend 1K on licenses already) or try another operating system which is free: Ubuntu. If you don't like it anyways, we can always switch back to Windows!"
Oh well, fair enough, not much to lose, right! So we went with Ubuntu. Within about 2 hours I could find everything. From the software installer to OpenOffice, browsers, email things and so on. Also I already got the basics of the Linux terminal (bash in this case) like ls, cd, mkdir and a few more.
My parents found it very easy to work with as well so we decided to stick with it.
I already started to experiment with some html/css code because the thought of being able to write my own websites was awesome! Within about a week or so I figured out a simple html site.
Then I started to experiment more and more.
After about a year of trial and error (repeat about 1000+ times) I finally got my first Apache server setup on a VirtualBox running Ubuntu server. Damn, it felt awesome to see my own shit working!
From that moment on I continued to try everything I could with Linux because I found the principle that I basically could do everything I wanted (possible with software solutions) without any limitations (like with Windows/Mac) very fucking awesome. I owned the fucking system.
Then, after some years, I got my first shared hosting plan! It was awesome to see my own (with subdomain) website online, functioning very well!
I started to learn stuff like FTP, SSH and so on.
Went on with trial and error for a while and then the thought occured to me: what if I'd have a little server ONLINE which I could use myself to experiment around?
First rented VPS was there! Couldn't get enough of it and kept experimenting with server thingies, linux in general aaand so on.
Started learning about rsa key based login, firewalls (iptables), brute force prevention (fail2ban), vhosts (apache2 still), SSL (damn this was an interesting one, how the fuck do you do this yourself?!), PHP and many other things.
Then, after a while, the thought came to mind: what if I'd have a dedicated server!?!?!?!
I ordered my first fucking dedicated server. Damn, this was awesome! Already knew some stuff about defending myself from brute force bots and so on so it went pretty well.
Finally made the jump to NginX and CentOS!
Made multiple VPS's for shitloads of purposes and just to learn. Started working with reverse proxies (nginx), proxy servers, SSL for everything (because fuck basic http WITHOUT SSL), vhosts and so on.
Started with simple, one screen linux setup with ubuntu 10.04.
Running a five monitor setup now with many distro's, running about 20 servers with proxies/nginx/apache2/multiple db engines, as much security as I can integrate and this fucking passion just got me my first Linux job!
It's not just an operating system for me, it's a way of life. And with that I don't just mean the operating system, but also the idea behind it :).20
Postman: We will stop supporting our Chrome app. Please download our "Native" app for better performance.
No motherfuckers.. Go die, alone, while your fucking family watch you bleed to death helplessly.
Electron is not native, don't mix true native development with lazy ass electron. Fuck you. A native postman would've been around 15MB in size but your "native" installer is 68MB so shut the fuck up and don't call it native or I will stick my native dick in your fucking throats.
I develop native apps So yeah, I'm pissed when web devs are starting to call electron and JS as native desktop apps... They are not... Now fuck off you smelly cunts.43
Someone asked me once to put a timer in an installer to slow it down because apparently it would make the software seem to be more important if it took longer to install.
Ever since being asked this I now wonder does why it takes so long to install some software.. Do developers actually do this?7
Do not continue reading if you value your life.
Visual fucking studio 2015 installation. MOTHERFUCKER !!!
OK new project will only work on VS2015. Need to download it. OK, go to MS website. Project works with community edition. Fucking great. Download the installer. Run the installer. MOTHERFUCKER DON'T OPEN THE FUCKING BROWSER TO THANK ME, YOU FUCKING FUCK. Ok...Wait to download the packages. One fucking eternity later download completes. FUCKING GREAT. Proceed to package installation. After two fucking hours installation progress bar stays the same. Google "vs 2015 installation stuck windows 7". MOTHERFUCKING BACKGROUND PROCESS IS FUCKING STUCK AND INSTALLATION DOES NOT CONTINUE. FUCK YOU. I'VE LOST TWO HOURS. OK, stop the process. Installation gets cancelled. Run the installer again. STOP THANKING ME YOU PIECE OF SHIT :@ OK, check again all downloaded packages. All good. Continue with installation. Installation completes. MOTHERFUCKER WHY YOU WANT TO RESTART THE WHOLE SYSTEM ? FUCK YOUR WINDOWS UPDATES. Ok, restart and be done with it. SSD to the rescue. Try to set up the project.
MOTHERFUCKER I DIDN'T INSTALL THE C++ PACKAGES. WTF WERE YOU DOING ALL THAT TIME? OK, run installer again and install C++ packages. I SWEAR TO GOD MICROSOFT, IF YOU THANK ME ONE MORE GODDAMN TIME, YOU'RE GETTING HATE MAIL.
Ok, installation completes. It's coding time. NO BITCH. VS2015 silently crashes after splash screen. :@@@ Google wtf is wrong again, turns out the C++ packages fuck shit up. Ok, pass some arguments to devenv.exe to reset. Restart VS. Ok, seems to be working now. Make a test project. Fucking awesome. Close VS and get the project files from perforce.
OK, files downloaded. Open VS again....
VS: "You're my bitch, you won't code today. Run from console and pass some shitty reset parameters"
YOU FUCKING FUCK. GO FUCK YOURSELF UP YOUR FUCKING ARSE. Ok, pass the parameters from console. Run again. Same "you're my bitch message" :@ OK, run with administrator rights, opens like charm. Run without admin rights again, "you're my bitch message". :@@@@@
Restart system, VS2015 finally opens project normally. Build project, 6934 errors.... :@ I'M DONE ! IM GOING BACK TO LINUX PROJECT. FUCK YOU ALL.18
Downloaded a program on a friends laptop and started the installer and asked her to finish the installation. She clicked cancel and asked me where to open up the program6
The moment i started Android Porting.
The tons of messages i got on XDA from random people.
Oh fucking hell
But one message was like WTF ?
Not exactly the message but it has the same point.
Hey Bro, I installer your room and it work but when i turned my phone of it didnt turn back on. The small buttn on side doesnt work to turn it on.
Then he posted the same message to thread since i dont respond to PMs.
Some user helped him and what was the issue ?
HIS FUCKING PHONE BATTERY WAS DEAD
He just had to charge it. FFS6
This one is about the SJWs in the software development community.
SJWs in general are a bunch of crying assholes.. software developers who are activists in online software dev sites are even worst.
Days ago, my visual studio 2019 RC notified me of a new version so I decided to look at the release notes. It was then when I read the most stupid fix ever included in a change log: "Visual Studio installer welcome image contains offensive element for Chinese."
Do you wanna know what that super offensive element in that image was? A GUY ON A BIKE WEARING A GREEN FUCKING HAT. Apparently in China this means someone's wife or sister is a prostitute.
I clicked on the link to read the actual feedback... and holy shit isn't that Chinese idiot an actual raging cunt.
In his stupid OP he is quoted saying: "this is serious".. FUCK YOU... your entire existence CAN NOT and SHOULD NOT be considered SERIOUS at all you whining dick sucking asshole.
And to make matters worst: a "fix" was released for this within days and immediately made available to everyone.
Motherfucking assholes in Microsoft took this guy's shit seriously and were scared shitless not to offend a snowflake abomination of an excuse of a human being.
Who gives a crap.. if you are offended and you publicly announce it, you are telling everyone that you are a pathetic child who can't control his feelings and wants everyone else to do it for him/her.
Well assholes at Microsoft and the Chinese offended by this shit, removing the green hat is offensive to the Irish people... would you re-instate it? NO YOU WON'T.
Why? well this is easy to answer: Irish people are white. White people, by standards of SJW cucks, can't be offended and reverse racism doesn't exist towards white people.
I hope that Chinese cunt, and if he has a girlfriend which I very much doubt since he had time to make that stupid feedback in the first place, to die slowly, bleeding from every hole and some newly created ones too, while watching his girlfriend get fucked by a high-ranking member of the ruling communist party of his Chinese gov and she is enjoying it and with a big smile on her face just so he can die feeling like the shit human being he is.
People on that feedback thread have urged MS to revert the change, asked MS to direct resources at fixing things that are as trivial as this but yet to be addressed... only MS didn't give a fuck.
Here's the link to the feedback thread for those interested: https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/...
If that asshole is here on devRant, here me out you raging cunt: I couldn't give a fuck less about you shit feelings or your stupid activism but I do care when idiots like you influence great software (incl. open source projects) just to feel good about yourself, to feel like you've accomplished something this week.
FUCK YOU all the way to hell.
For all other assholes (AKA SJWs) in the software community: software/computers don't give a fuck about your feelings. I'll beat you down to the depths of hell if you come at me with your progressive/equality/political correctness crap any day of the week... you just pick the day and I'm happy to oblige.49
About 20ish years ago I was working in IT, and it was about around this time where CD-Roms were hitting the stores and becoming the newest craze. However, Microsoft did not write the drivers correctly for this new hardware.
In a nutshell, the driver would be installed and the user would lose the sound to their speaker.
How did this happen? By altering the way the interrupts worked on the computer. At the time there only existed a few unreserved IRQs or Interrupt ReQuests. The installer package would redirect IRQ 5 which is "User Selectable (Sound Cards)" to work with the CD-Rom. This was fine and all unless you wanted to listen to your speakers.
I had come up with a clever hack through rewriting a config file that would be run during bootup. So at the time of boot up IRQ 5 would be dedicated to the sound card, and IRQ7 (which was usually for the Lpt1 Printer) would be dedicated to the CD-Rom. This worked.
And because I was IT at the time, I would get a lot of calls for fixing this problem.
So, as you can imagine, I've gotten **really** good at doing this. I didn't even need to be at a computer to walk someone through the problem.
I receive a call one day, it was a problem with the CD-Rom and sound card. I walk him through the problem and he reboots his computer. I could hear him on the other side jumping with joy when he was able to put in his music CD and hear sound coming from the speakers.
He asks me, how in the hell did you figure this out!? You're a fucking Genius!
And I said, It's not rocket science it's just a computer.
There was a long pause of silence.
Uhhh... Hello? Did I say something wrong?
Sir, I work at NASA I deal with Rocket Science on a daily basis.5
Suck dicks Microsoft... Get choked.
All I wanted to do was to uninstall this piece of crapware.
And now you're telling me i need to UPDATE the installer in order to uninstall.
What the fuck, what obscure substances have you been smoking lately? imbicile numbskull maniacs.19
Buckle up kids, this one gets saucy.
At work, we have a stress test machine that trests tensile, puncture and breaking strength for different materials used (wood construction). It had a controller software update that was supposed to be installed. I was called into the office because the folks there were unable to install it, they told me the executable just crashed, and wanted me to take a look as I am the most tech-savvy person there.
I go to the computer and open up the firmware download folder. I see a couple folders, some random VBScript file, and Installation.txt. I open the TXT, and find the first round of bullshit.
"Do not run the installer executable directly as it will not work. Run install.vbs instead."
Now, excuse me for a moment, but what kind of dick-cheese-sniffing cockmonger has end users run VBScript files to install something in 2018?! Shame I didn't think of opening it up and examining it for myself to find out what that piece of boiled dogshit did.
I suspend my cringe and run it, and lo and behold, it installs. I open the program and am faced with entering a license key. I'm given the key by the folks at the office, but quickly conclude no ways of entering it work. I reboot the program and there is an autofilled key I didn't notice previously. Whatever, I think, and hit OK.
The program starts fine, and I try with the login they had previously used. Now it doesn't work for some reason. I try it several times to no avail. Then I check the network inspector and notice that when I hit login, no network activity happens in the program, so I conclude the check must be local against some database.
I browse to the program installation directory for clues. Then I see a folder called "Databases".
"This can't be this easy", I think to myself, expecting to find some kind of JSON or something inside that I can crawl for clues. I open the folder and find something much worse. Oh, so much worse.
I find <SOFTWARE NAME>.accdb in the folder. At this point cold sweat is already running down my back at the sheer thought of using Microsoft Access for any program, but curiosity takes over and I open it anyway.
I find the database for the entire program inside. I also notice at this point that I have read/write access to the database, another thing that sent my alarm bells ringing like St. Pauls cathedral. Then I notice a table called "tUser" in the left panel.
Fearing the worst, I click over and find... And you knew it was coming...
Usernames and passwords in plain text.
Not only that, they're all in the format "admin - admin", "user - user", "tester - tester".
I suspend my will to die, login to the program and re-add the account they used previously. I leave the office and inform the peeps that the program works as intended again.
I wish I was making this shit up, but I really am not. What is the fucking point of having a login system at all when your users can just open the database with a program that nowadays comes bundled with every Windows install and easily read the logins? It's not even like the data structure is confusing like minified JSON or something, it's literally a spreadsheet in a program that a trained monkey could read.
God bless them and Satan condemn the developers of this fuckawful program.8
I have to update Visual Studio Installer before I can remove Visual Studio
Thank you Microsoft8
Fucking pieces of shit, if I would have a list of developers that add "Whoopsie daisy, tinky winky compiling stuffie" as error messages, installer steps or as a checkbox in their github issues, I'd break their fucking back and keep them alive, just to ram fucking burning nails into their eyelids and then blast just enough power through them to make them burn and evaporate alive.4
Downloaded Kubuntu because i couldn't seen to be able to boot from a freshly created KDE Neon bootable usb.
Installed it onto my netbook (Lenovo Thinkpad X121E) and it worked great!
But just the fact that somehow the installer froze when trying to setup hdd encryption kept bugging me.
Took a random flash drive which was laying around and put it in to see what would happen. KDE Neon booted just like this and everything worked very well with hdd encryption.
I now have a very secure netbook 😊15
So I'm moving to a new/bigger place with faster Internet soon so I think it's time to rebuild my current home/remote server setup.
I want to setup the following things:
- vps for server monitoring (open source pushover alternative + netdata)
- Zero tier network for connecting all my servers to the same network
- pihole/pivpn (or the Angristan vpn installer, look it up :)
- second blocking thingy next to pihole to make sure that I literally can't access google/fb etc anymore, even if I really needed/wanted to
- bunch of general servers.
Microsoft WHAT THE ACTUAL F**K. WHAT IS THE REASON TO UPDATE VISUAL STUDIO INSTALLER TO UNINSTALL VISUAL STUDIO.19
I'm trying to Uninstall Visual Studio 2017 and the uninstaller is asking me to update the installer before I can proceed.
What type of fuck is this Microsoft?4
Wtf is facebook doing. I noticed that instagram updated through facebook app installer instead of play store. Went to see all apps and these thre ware there out of thin air. They warent there when i bought the phone, but they are system apps. So i must have gotten them through an update. Fuck this17
Client: "Help me I can't find my programs"
Me: "Have you installed them right?"
Client: "Yes, I have"
Basically I spent an hour explaining him that dragging an installer from the download folder to program folder isn't actually installing...7
I wrote a custom debian installer that shows a Windows bootscreen graphic while running debootstrap silently. Set it up to load through pxe and tftp from my home router. So basically it installs Linux while showing a fake windows boot screen. I actually managed to install Linux on three friends laptops who had unfortunate bios configurations without them knowing over the course of the last two years.7
Fucking websites that dont host the latest version of their own software
Thanks for making me download a 5gb installer just to make me download another 2gb in updates assholes
You have to update Microsoft Visual Studio Installer 2017 in order to update Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 Preview?!?! WTF!?! WELL DONE MICROSOFT!
Xamarin is 27GB, whaaaaaat?!?4
I have just thought of the perfect solution when support for fucking ancient IE versions creaps in the requirements (and asking the assholes to produce numbers to support the crazy does not help)
Just do browser detection and if IE < 9 Replace body with one of those winXP alert boxes that tell them there Computer is infected and that they can get a free scan (it's what they are used to anyway). Put a link to the installer of your favourite browser over the entire image.😎
Good news is 100℅ code reuse! Works on every outdated IE and every website that requires IE support.4
For Windows driver update, found a great (open source) tool to update or install missing drivers.
My dell laptop (Windows 10) screen used to go blank or some bubble used to appear may times a day. Used Dell driver update tool, no update, says all driver up to date.
Then used Snappy Driver Installer tool, which detected my laptop details correctly.
Then it showed that my display driver was almost a year old and there were couple of updates, latest being just last month. In addition to that, there were 30+ updates on disk drivers, networking, sensors, bluetooth, audio etc.
First updated my display driver, upon success, slowly updated the rest of it. Now, the system worked entire day without any issue. Also, my laptop fan used to run full speed seems to have slowed down.
Also, my external monitor clarity has improved.
ps: worked for me, but be careful. Check it thoroughly before updating, update only those drivers which are giving trouble and there are no updated drivers available from windows or manufacturers.10
I want to install a game, but I haven't enough space on my disk. Then I want to uninstall VS because I don't code in C# and VS has the most place on my disk. I clicked on uninstall and then come the VS Installer. He needs an update and I don't have enough space on my disk.
My biggest hurdle:
Having to install Windows because some old application only runs on Windows.
No, i do not want to sign in.
I AM SURE
Installer: How about signing in?
Edit: Now it asks me about privacy options. As if i even had a choice..12
I keep a backup of most installers because I have a poor internet connection.
Imagine my disappointment when one of them is just a downloader for the full installer.2
There has been a lot of confusion on devrant lately as to whether windows sucks or not. Let me clear it up for you quickly; from the checked c compiler from Microsoft research:
‘*Note:* do not use the words “install”, “setup”, or “update” in test names where the files will be compiled and executed. Windows x86 has heuristics that decide executables with those words in the name need elevated privileges to run because they might be an installer, even if they don’t actually install anything. Documentation is here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/...
I say this every week, but if you are being a Windows fanboy and defending it and calling Linux engineers stupid, you need therapy. There is no argument.
This is just like the wonderful surprises that I used to receive day after day when I was a Windows user. For those who don’t understand this basically says Windows tries to use “a heuristic” which in this case I’m fairly certain is a fancy way of saying whitelist based on how easy this problem is, to decide whether to launch these programs with super user privileges. So if you want to make malware for Windows, just call it installer!61
holy fucking hell, who’s dumb ass idea was it to make Visual Studio require a god damn fucking update for the installer before I can uninstall it, you stupid ass dumb fucks MS, I didn’t just tell you uninstall it so you can go burn more data down my shitty copper pipes.3
OK so I'm just going to announce this. I'm done with my WPF client for devRant. It's not really "Production" quality but it does what I want and well... it's good enough for me and I need to move on.
Here's the release and code if anyone is interested. If you want any other feature, you can just fork and implement it yourself.
Release: (ClickOnce installer in app.zip)
Fun fucking story time so buckle your dick holsters.
My Windows partition died the other day. Like totally fucking died. Not recoverable at all. So I decided "Oh it's okay, I'll just boot up a windows USB and reinstall it."
I remembered I had ordered an m.2 ssd so I waited for that to arrive for the sick speed boost. All went well, it arrived and I realised my peasant MoBo doesn't support NVME at all. "No problem, pcie adapter bruh".
Inserted and started again. "Ruh roh raggy!" Fucking BIOS cant find the NVME. "Never mind I have a spare SSD. I'll use that and move shit around later." STILL NO FUCKING DICE. THE FUCKING BOOT USB WORKS BUT WHEN THE INSTALLER TRIES TO RESTART WINDOWS TO FINISH THE INSTALL IT FUCKING LOADS THE USB AGAIN AND WITHOUT THE USB IT FAILS.
The fuck do I do here? I've been sat all fucking day trying to sort this shit to no avail so now I have a very fucking expensive door stop while I try to solve the ever fucking great riddle of "I need the usb but the usb fucks the install that needs to usb to finish".
Such fucking bullshit.5
Rage at ANY software installer that automatically launches my browser to a fucking webpage on completion
IT HAS NEVER BEEN USEFUL4
Requested an installer for Photoshop for my personal laptop...bcoz of compliance n licensing issue..they gave me company macbook air instead... Ok no problem 😁
Just now I realized that for some reason I can't mount SMB shares to E: and H: anymore.. why, you might ask? I have no idea. And troubleshooting Windows.. oh boy, if only it was as simple as it is on Linux!!
So, bimonthly reinstall I guess? Because long live good quality software that lasts. In a post-meritocracy age, I guess that software quality is a thing of the past. At least there's an option to reset now, so that I don't have to keep a USB stick around to store an installation image for this crap.
And yes Windows fanbois, I fucking know that you don't have this issue and that therefore it doesn't exist as far as you're concerned. Obviously it's user error and crappy hardware, like it always is.
And yes Linux fanbois, I know that I should install Linux on it. If it's that important to you, go ahead and install it! I'll give you network access to the machine and you can do whatever you want to make it run Linux. But you can take my word on this - I've tried everything I could (including every other distro, custom kernels, customized installer images, ..), and it doesn't want to boot any Linux distribution, no matter what. And no I'm not disposing of or selling this machine either.
Bottom line I guess is this: the OS is made for a user that's just got a C: drive, doesn't rely on stuff on network drives, has one display rather than 2 (proper HDMI monitor recognition? What's that?), and God forbid that they have more than 26 drives. I mean sure in the age of DOS and its predecessor CP/M, sure nobody would use more than 26 drives. Network shares weren't even a thing back then. And yes it's possible to do volume mounts, but it's unwieldy. So one monitor, 1 or 2 local drives, and let's make them just use Facebook a little bit and have them power off the machine every time they're done using it. Because keeping the machine stable for more than a few days? Why on Earth would you possibly want to do that?!!
Microsoft Windows. The OS built for average users but God forbid you depart from the standard road of average user usage. Do anything advanced, either you can't do it at all, you can do it but it's extremely unintuitive and good luck finding manuals for it, or you can do it but Windows will behave weirdly. Because why not!!!16
What is your story of your first encounter with a Linux Distro?
Here's mine (Slight long version) –
Back in my 8th grade I used to buy Tech magazines that used to have DVDs filled with random updated contents like Audio/Video tools, Wallpapers and other stuff. There used to be this "Linux Distro of the Month" section that I used to ignore because I didn't know what it is.
But one issue of the magazine had a review of this "amazing new" Ubuntu 10.10. I read it and at first I thought it's some kind of theme for Windows (I know). But then I tried it out on my HP Compaq nx6120 which had a pure BIOS. No UEFI shit. Ubuntu came with it's wubi installer and it installed Ubuntu smoothly like a normal software. Later I discovered that it is a completely different operating system that doesn't run anything from my Windows. I was upset about it and I booted back to Windows.
But I never removed it. I felt like exploring what it was and why people use it.
It's almost 9 years later and I'm so glad with what had happened back then.12
Story when I worked as a 1st line technician:
Customer: "Yes hello, I'm trying to install Windows as instructed, but the installer is not starting"
Me: "Ok, have you tried pressing [button] at the bootscreen?"
C: "Yes, over and over, still nothing happens"
This was actually one of my first calls, so my co-worker stepped in to help while I listened.
Co-worker: "okay, so when you rebooted the computer, press [button] and tell me what happens"
C: "....okay, I think it's starting"
Co-w: "Great! I'll just wait until it's running"
A minute goes by, installer seems to be running, but then we hear a loud BEEP. It's so loud another coworker hears it from his desk, through our headsets. A moment goes by, and it BEEPS again. Then the sound begins again, but doesn't stop. It's like an air horn at full blow. We ask the customer what he's doing, but he cannot hear us over the constant beep. We're brainstorming what it could be, when he finally says something:
"CAN.. LET.. OF.."
"CAN I LET GO OF THE BUTTON??"
I think we laughed the whole day1
Oh fucking Huawei.

- Find, download, fail on 4+ OTAs
- Discover "UPDATE.APP Extractor"
Runs on Windows
Note: UPDATE.APP custom format
Different per H6X model
- Uses 'K''s VM to test
- My H6X model does not have
a predefined format
- Process to get format requires
TWRP, which is not working
- FAIL HERE
- Discover "Firmware Finder"
Windows app to find Huawei
- Tries 'K''s VM
- Fails with 1 OTA
- Downloads another firmware ZIP

- Realise that ROMs aren't working on
EMUI 4.1; Find TWRPs for EMUI5
- Find and fail with 2-3 OTAs
Note: Had removed old OTAs for
space on Chromebook (32GB)
- In anger, flash one with TWRP
instead of DLOAD (which checks
- Works! Same wasn't working with
- Find and flash a custom TWRP
as old one still exists (not wiped in
- Try flashing LineageOS
- LineageOS stuck in boot
- Try flashing AOSP
- Try flashing Resurruction Remix
- Realise that need stock EMUI5
- Realise that the firmware I installed
wasn't for my device so not working
- FUCK NO MORE LARGE DLs
- Try another custom TWRP
- Begin getting '/cust mounting' errs
- Try reflashing EMUI5 with TWRP
- Doesn't work
- Try DLOADing EMUI5
- Like before, incompatability
- DLOAD EMUI4
- Reunlock and reflash TWRP
- WRITE THIS AS A BREAK
Must fun was definitely when I programmed the automated installing tool to make my life easier at my old work.
Imagine having to install about 30+ PC's in an period of 2 days and that repeating at least 1-2 times a week...Having standard programms to install like acrobat pro and more...
Just deployed needed software on the net. wrote a ghost installer programm and let him deploy the software for me. No continue smashing anymore. God bless that idea I had.7
Cracking old recovery CDs for the 9x/2000/XP era shines some light into how companies operated and when concepts came to be in that time:
Packard Bell: An EXE checks that you're running on a Packard Bell machine and reboots if it's not. How do we bypass it? Easy: just fucking delete it. The files to reinstall Windows from scratch come from...
Yup. Turns out Packard Bell was doing the recovery partition thing all the way back to the 9x era, maybe even further. Files aren't even on the restore disc so if your partition table got fucked (pretty common because malware and disk corruption) you were totally fucked and needed to repurchase Windows. (My dad, at the time, only charged at-cost OEM prices for a replacement retail copy. He knew it was dumb so he never sold PB machines.)
Computer check? Nope, remove one line from a BATCH file and it's gone.
Six archives, named "WINA.ZIP" through "WINF.ZIP" (plus one or two extras for OEM software) hold Windows. Problematic? Well... only because they never put the password anywhere so the installer can't install them. (Some interesting on-disc technician-only utils, though!)
If not a Dell machine, lock up. Cause? CONFIG.SYS driver masquerading as OAK (the common CD driver) doing the check, then chainloading the real OAK driver. Simple fix: replace the fake driver with the real one.
Would I mention this one if there weren't?
Disc is mounted on N:. Subdirectories work, but doing anything in them (a DIR, trying to execute something, trying to view shit in EDIT.COM) kicked you back to the disc root.
Installer couldn't find machine manifest in the MAP folder (it wanted your PC's serial before it'd let you install, to make sure you have the correct recovery disc) so it asked for 12-digit alphanumeric serial. The defined serials in the manifest were something like "02884902-01" or similar (8-2, all numbers) and it couldn't read the file so it couldn't show the right format, nor check for the right type.
Bypassing that issue, trying to do the ACTUAL install process caused nothing to happen... as all BATCHes for install think the CD should be on X:.
well that was fun. Now to test on-real-PC behavior, as VBOX and VMWare both don't like the special hardware shit it tries to use. (Why does a textmode GUI need GPU acceleration, COMPAQ?????)5
Lenovo, you dumb fuck cunts.
How the fuck did you think it might be okay to ship a laptop with a BROKEN FUCKING WLAN DRIVER??????
This piece of shit doesn't even have RJ45 anymore.
And also who shit in your empty cavities where your brains should be when you thought it was a good thing to disable booting from anything but the main windows partition? My Mint installer stick works on any and everything I have ever tried him with except for this.3
1) Open IE or Edge
2) Search "download chrome"
3) Click on top hit

When did it become OK to make a software installer package 33.8GB. I miss the days when 3MB was a big executable.10
I am proud of myself
I was a Gentoo installer (users are called installers in Gentooish) for 4 whole days!
Back to Debian... 😄3
TL;DR: My devices all hate me and I needed to fix them all.
My Devices really love me.
I rooted my smartphone (LG G5) just yesterday. Everything went fine. Installed TWRP, SuperSU and some nice Apps that utilize root.
Today I was on the go (at CeBIT) and already had the Xposed Installer App on my phone, but didn't attempt installing it yet because I needed my phone for Maps and Messaging and the app had given clear warning about the bricking-potential.
So to the end of the day I get bored, send my last important Messages, installed the Xposed Framework...
... aaaand got stuck in a boot loop.
So I got on my way back home (thanks God I remembered all the trains I needed to take). On the way I had a lot of fun in the Recovery-Terminal and figured that I should be able to fix my phone with no problem at home because the installer made backups (unlike myself).
Coming back home and my pc was still running (should've shut down after installing updates).
The pc behaved odd and I couldn't shut it down properly, which led to cutting the power.
And upon booting my pc I got a ... give it a guess ...
...a bootloop (technically the animation just never ended).
So after I fixed my phone with my spare laptop (just transferred and executed the uninstaller for xposed) I fixed my PC too, which had an old broken dkms-driver.
The odd thing about this is, that this isn't technically a rant. I guess you can confirm that you can't find any swear words.
Because I ENJOYED fixing the devices. I already fixed my pc a couple of times was well as unbricking my rooted phones, so there was fairly little research involved.
I guess I'm now offically twisted.
Now, after my smartphone backups are transferred, I'Ll take my device apart and replace the camera glass which arrived today (and hope, no pray, that my sim card does still work after that)...
... after I blatendly copied a meme to get more attention. 😉3
So I wanted to update my visual studio. Turns out I cant because WPF (Apparently the Installers uses it) has a problem with broken fonts.
Okay. No problem I thought. I uninstalled all 720 fonts and re-registered them, filtering out the 3 broken ones. Checked the time-stamp as suggested. Everything fine. Had to reboot. (Of curse.)
Rechecked the fonts, reports as okay. Tried to start the installer BUT THIS FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT SOFTWARE CRASHES ON ME AGAIN WITH THE SAME FOCKING ERROR. IT DOESN'T EVENT WANT TO FUCKING TELL ME WHICH FUCKING FONT IS THE PROBLEM. I CHECKED EVERYYYY SINGLE FUCKING FONT. NOT THAT THERE IS NO FUCKING WAY TO FUCKING CATCH A FUCKING FUCKER EXCEPTION IN THIS FUCKING WORLD. I mean seriously. Why would you crash on a font THAT YOU DON'T EVEN USE IN YOUR FUCKING FUCK PROGRAMM TO INSTALL YOUR FUCKING PICE OF SHIT SOFTWARE.
But, IT GETS WORSE. TURNS OUT MICKY FUCKING SOFT KNOWS ABOUT THIS FUCKING BUG SINCE TWO-FUCKING-THOUSAND-FOURTEEN.
And they didn't fixed it. Nooooooooo. THEY FUCKING WROTE A FUCKING WORKAROUND THAT DOES NOT FUCKING WORKKKKKK AND KEEP PUTTING THIS FUCKING BUG IN EVERY FUCKING INSTALLER SINCE THEN.
Can you tell I'm pissed? YES? GOOOOOOD. BECAUSE I FUCKING AM.
MICKYSOFT CAN GO AND SUCK A FUCKING APPROPRIATE THING TO SUCK IN THIS FUCKING SITUATION.
THE BEST? THEY EVEN FUCKING DARE TO ASK ABOUT MY FUCKING FEEDBACK. YOU KNOW WHAT? YOU GET MY FUCKING FEEDBACK. TOGETHER WITH A FUCKING BAG FULL OF FUCKING SHIT TO YOUR FUCKING HQ
CAN I HAVE A FUCKING STRESSBALL NOW

Was forced to do some work on Windows this week (CAD tools that runs only on Windows). I spent a few days just setting up the tools. There were quite a few things I realized I forgot about Windows (as compared to Linux).
1) Installation times are down right horrific. What exactly are the installer doing for 10 minutes?
2) .NET is a cluster fuck. Not even Microsofts repair tool can fix it, but rather just hangs. I ended up using another tool to nuke it and reinstall.
3) Windows binary installs are insanely huge, thus, takes forever to download.
4) The registry is a pointless database that must have been written in hell with the single intent of destroying users will to live. The sole existence of the registry is another proof that completely incompetent engineers designed Windows.
5) Rebooting is the only way to solve many problems. This is another sure sign of a fundamentally fucked up OS design.
6) What the heck is wrong with the GUIs designers? The control panel must be the worst design ever. There are so many levels to get to a particular setting I'm getting dizzy. Nothing gets better by the illogical organisation.
7) Windows networking. A perversion of the tcp/ip stack that makes it virtually impossible to understand a damn thing about the current network configuration. There are at least 3 different places that effects the settings.
8) Windows command prompt. Why did they even bother to leave it in? The interpreter is as intelligent as retarded donut. You can't do anything with it, except typing "exit" and Google for another solution.
8) Updates. Why does it takes hundreds of updates per month to keep that thing safe?
9) Despite all updates that is flying out of Redmond like confetti, it is still necessary to install antivirus to keep the damn thing safe. That cost extra money, and further cost you by degrading performance of your hardware.
10) Window performance. Software runs like it was swimming in molasses. The final stab in the back on your hardware investment, and pretty much sends performance on your hardware back a few hundred bucks more.
11) Closed source is evil. If something crash consistently, you might find a forum that address the issues you have. Otherwise you're out of luck. On the other hand, it might be for the better. I imagine reading the code for Windows can lead to severe depression.
I'm lucky to be a Linux dev, and should probably not complain too much... But really, Windows, go get yourself hit by a truck and die. I won't miss you.14
I got a ticket near the end of the day, asking to install a printer on a computer. The branch in question was in a different time zone (I'm in US-Pacific [GMT-07] and the computer was in US-Eastern [GMT-04]). I figured I wouldn't worry about it; after all, I had other tickets to work on that were much higher priority.
The next day I come into work and immediately get a message from one of my East Coast coworkers, telling me that this branch is calling and asking how the printer is coming. I told him to tell them I would call them a bit later. I do a couple of easy jobs and then begrudgingly call the branch. I listen to the phone tree that they have (which requires two button presses instead of one in order to speak with someone) and finally get in contact with a person... only to have the call disconnect.
I call back and ask for the person who called in the ticket and then followed up, who had apparently gone to lunch. I informed the person that I was just going to install the printer and it would be good to go. This would be fine... up until she mentioned she needed scanning functionality.
Now I wasn't sure if the driver we have in AD is set up with the scan functionality, so I said okay, but that meant I would have to get the driver from the website. The connection to our branches are about 1Mbps, so even downloading Java updates (60-ish MB) take about 5-10 minutes on a good day. The file for this printer was about 700MB (thanks HP). So I went and did other stuff while that downloaded.
I come back after it finished and started the install process. Right away it asks to re-seat the USB cable. So I call the branch. The call disconnects. I call again. It disconnects. I call one more time, and finally get the person who called the ticket in. I instruct him to re-seat the cable. He does. The driver starts doing its thing. I tell him I'll call back if I run into any issues and we hang up.
The driver goes through the install process for about 20 minutes, stops at 99%, then fails. I want to restart the computer, just in case there's a conflict somewhere, but that would require calling the store again, so I put it off.
About an hour later I get a message from another East Coast coworker, telling me the branch is calling about the printer again. I was in the middle of another call and said I would call back later. I do. It disconnects. I call again, and get the person who called the ticket in again. I tell him I want to restart the computer, but wasn't sure if it was okay. He checks with the people using it, who says it's okay, so I reboot. I hang up.
Once the computer comes back up I start the install process again. It asks to re-seat the cable. Fuck. I don't want to call the store again, so I open notepad and say "Please take out the printer's USB connection from the back of the computer."
Three. Fucking. People. Saw it. They moved the window and one even tried to close it, but they didn't re-seat the cable. I opened another window, telling them to call me at my number. They didn't. I called them. Got disconnected. I called them again, finally got someone, told them to re-seat the printer cable again. They do, thank god.
I say thank you and hang up. Continue the installer. It stops at 99% again and fails. I reboot the computer; screw it, I'm just going to install the driver from Active Directory. Check Devices and Printers. It's installed successfully. Hallelujah!
I get the printer set up for the various programs they use and print a test page. I call them one last time; their phone system sounding like they were connected via an underwater line connected by tin cans. I get someone.
$me: Hi, I want to know if the printer has printed something.
$them (garbled): -et me shee... yesh, it -rint-d a *beezelborp*.
$me: Perfect, I'm going to close this ticket! Thanks, goodbye! *hangs up*
tl;dr - I hate printers
Does anyone here do development on a Chromebook??
That wasn't the point of this post..
So.. I am working on making a package manager for chrome os. Yes I know that chromebrew exists, this will integrate chromebrew and also add support for installer scripts from other chrome os based projects (like crouton). I am also going to add my own script for creating custom banners and a custom "lockscreen" for the terminal.
Any suggestions for other features?48

Switching to Antergos again.
Yes Yes i know im the founder of devRant Arch Linux team but im full of those issues like secure boot not working and i need to have it disabled. this is just fucked up because i need it enabled.
So im basically Switching from Arch to basically pure Arch with GUI installer and few cool apps on top.13
When you're sick of Arch Linux ability to brick your system and you try to install a more stable distro like Linux mint.18
android studio is TERRIBLE. why cant they just make a fucking good linux installer? they're a fucking half trillion dollars company and can't get their shit together. its terribly unprofessional, and makes vim look like a god. maybe not all of us has have access to nasa's supercomputer and don't have a month for it to start.
here's a story about the installation of android studio on a (fairly high-end) chromebook running gallium:
I went to the website, which by the way could tell I was on linux but still automatically showed me the windows instructions, and downloaded android studio, 1.2 gb for fucks sake! I have a 16 gb hard drive! then it installed, and I closed it, because I was gonna use it later. I had a problem with it the first time, so I reinstalled, and halfway through the installation, IT DECIDED IT NEEDED SUPERUSER PRIVELEGES. fuck that. I restarted the installer, with sudo, and it took about switch as long this time. then, it made me redownload the sdk and all that other bloatware EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE INSTALLED IN SEPARATE FOLDERS AND ALREADY DOWNLOADED. jesus christ, google.4
I have ported init_sony and multirom.
But multirom install fucked up my init_sony kernel.
It didnt boot at all even kernel.
After discovering issue with friend we instead of fixing it( AdrianDC needs to fix that) we created a HUGE hack.
We took another library that unzips boot.img (Sony uses ELF image its different then AOSP type)
And implemented it into multirom installer.
So lets do it manually.
Shit it doesnt boot.
So i added --forceelf option.
So i just opened the file studied it and then HARDCODED the ELF value into type right before the image is created.
Not only it worked but me and my friend created a fucking huge hack around entire multirom which is even bigger hack on its self.
I can call this productive day.
Tomorrow: Asking AdrianDC to help me on this since he edited bbootimage.2
I literally just had this conversation.
C: "Hey Hindsight, I'm having issues with our web print driver, it's not opening the browser after printing"
H: "Have you checked Interactive Mode in the installer so it opens the browser?"
H: "Are you sure you have the right domain name in your configuration file? It should be <thing.example.com>"
C: "Ah, it's just example.com. Should I just change it in the config?"
H: "No you need to regenerate the config from our server tool, because the server data needs to match your client config data"
C: "Ok, my config says <example.com>"
H: "Yes, just regenerate the config with <thing.example.com> instead for the domain"
C: "Ok I'll do that. What was the correct domain again?"
H: thinking "Holy shit can you really be that dumb!" but saying "<thing.example.com>"2
This is from a DOS-era Packard-Bell recovery disk. No one out of the group of like 30 16-yr-olds could crack the password in the installer. I literally just opened it in nano.

One of my colleagues tried upgrading his Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10... he had multiple issues getting the installer to run but got past it after a couple of hours troubleshooting.
He left for lunch when it got to 81% installed, and got back an hour later to find "Something Happened" proudly displaying on-screen.
He clicked 'okay' and it just started rolling back to Windows 7 with no explanation as to what happened, or even any error codes!
As helpful as always!5
First it was the "set up WampServer so the client can use our database", to which I told her we should use an embedded database, to which she told me to do.
Then the "Just give the client a .jar file and install the JRE in his laptop" to wich I told her we can make a native installer, to which she fucking assigned to me.
Then the whole fucked up management thing with no design whatsoever and the "we don't need version control".
To just a few hours earlier, when she got mad because I set up a Slack for us to exchange information easily, she told me she was already mad because I shared the project by Google Drive and that she worked in security and knows the risk... AND AT THE SAME TIME, she uses Gmail to share the project.. BRILLIANT !7
Can't get my hackintosh to boot the Sierra installer. Really sick of having to play around with Hackintoshes until I have the money for a MacBook. But such is my life...9
that weird anxious feeling you get when trying to work out if this is a good idea or not.
"There was a problem downloading the required files"
OK, well that lasted long.
MS cant even have their installer finish anymore.8
I am currently looking for a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), because my music projects are starting to get a little too complex for Audacity.
So I started looking for a good, easy-to-learn, ideally free program, and quickly learned that Avid now has a free version of Pro Tools called First.
So I go to their site and fill out the registration form to get the download. In addition to creating an account with Avid, you also need to create one with iLok, which apparently has something to do with how they manage their licenses. Kinda overkill for a free program, but okay...
I download the program (about 3gigs...), install it and try to start it. It gives me an error message about missing some service. Okay? I'm confused because I notice that an 'Application Manager' service has appeared in my tray, and when I open that I can log into my new account just fine. But it still doesn't work.
There's a link in the error message to the iLok website, and it looks like ai need to dowload and install another component. Why didn't that get installed with the program if it's required?
So I go to the iLok site, download it and install it. Pro Tools First still won't start. I realize that the PTF installer asked me to reboot, which I didn't do because: a) I always have a lot of windows open, and b) How often is a reboot ACTUALLY required? Why would you need to reboot?
So I (begrudgingly) reboot, and now the program seems to start initializing... but then it throws an error message about some plugin that it can't load because it doesn't work for the 64 bit version. Then... why are you even looking for it?
And then it says something like: 'I can't handle that, I'm just gonna shut down'.
I try starting it again. Same error appears, but then it gets past it this time... Only to throw another error message about something else it can't load, and therefore it must shut down.
Third time is the charm, the program actually made it to the project create/load screen! Huzzah!
So I look around a bit, but don't do much. It doesn't seem too intuitive to me, so I start watching some tutorials on YouTube from Avid themselves. It's a little late by now, so I don't get my hands dirty that day.
Next time I want to try out the program I start it up, still get error messages, but it does seem to initialize okay. But then the 'Create project' button doesn't react when I press it.
It turns out that the program takes a looong time to log in to the avid account, even though the manager service is running and logged in...
When it finally logs on I create a new blank project, but it doesn't ask me where to save it to. I see there is a counter saying 1/3 and looking around I find some info about 'cloud based projects'.
It would seem that this program only supports saving projects to the cloud, and you get only 3 projects total. Three. THREE?
I add an instrument track to my new project and select the one and only plugin, which is a synth. I don't see the plugin window, like in the tutorials I watched. I fiddle around with the windows, but I only manage to get the layout fucked up. There's a handy 'Window' menu, but none of the options resets the view. The main window is now sporting a WINDOWS FUCKING 7 BORDER! And partially blocking the view of the top menu.
Frustrated, I shut the program down and restart it. I now select one of the project templates (after waiting for it to LOG IN AGAIN!) in the hope that I might have a bit more luck with that starting point.
But when the template has loaded, out of nowhere, the program goes from maximized to windowed mode! And the fucking Win7 border is back again, still messing with the main menu!
I get the sucker maximized again and select one of the synth tracks, and Lo and Behold! The synth plugin window actually shows up! But of course there is no sound produced when I play, neither with the keyboard or my midi keyboard.
Oh no, that would have been too easy.
I see some the meters moving when I play, but no sound is produced. I check the options menu, but find out nothing useful except for the fact that the program only support 48kHz sample rate. That's pretty disappointing when you have a 192kHz/24bit soundcard.
I'm done. This piece of shit software is NOT for me. It's bloated, complicated to sign up for and install, extremely limited and buggy as hell!
The final insult is that it takes 5 minutes to uninstall because there is no uninstall option in the so-called 'Application Manager' (of course fucking not!), and doing it through Programs & Features there are 5 (FIVE!!) different apps and services to uninstall, one by one.
0/10, would not recommend.11
IT Dept creates an update installer with a Message of "Your computer will restart now to install updates" with only an OK button when your in the middle of work with multiple apps and windows open...

Inspired by @NoMad. My philosophy is that technology is a means to and ends. We’re a tool oriented species. As it relates to software and hardware, they should be your means to achieve your ends without you needing to think. Think of riding a bicycle or driving a car. You aren’t particularly conscious of them - you just adjust input based on heuristics and reflex - while your doing the activity.
For a long time Software has been horrendously bad at this. There is almost always some setup involved; you need to front-load a plan to get to your ends. Funny enough we’re in the good days now. In the early days of GUI you did have to switch modes to achieve different things until input peripherals got better.
I’ve been using windows from 95 and to this day, though it’s gotten better it’s not trivial to setup an all in one printer and scan a document - just yesterday I had to walk my mother through it and she’s somewhat proficient. Also when things break it’s usually nightmare to fix, which is why fresh installing it periodically is s meme to this day. MS still goes to great lengths with their UI so that most people can still get most of their daily stuff done without a manual.
I started Linux in University when I was offered an intro course on the shell. I’ve been using it professionally ever since. While it’s good at making you feel powerful, it requires intricate knowledge to achieve most things. Things almost never go smoothly no matter how much practice you have, especially if you need to compile tools from source. It also has very little in the ways of safe guards to prevent you from hurting yourself. Sure you might be able to fix it if you press harder but it’s less stress to just fresh install. There is also nothing, NOTHING more frustrating than following documentation to the T and it just doesn’t work! It is my day job to help companies with exactly this. Can’t really give an honest impression of the GUI ux as the distros have varying schools of thoughts with their desktop environments. Even The popular one Ubuntu did weird things for a while. In my humble opinion, *nix is better at powering the internet than being a home computer your grandma can use.
Now after being in the thick of things, priorities change and you really just want to get things done. In 2015 I made the choice to go Mac. It has been one of my more interesting experiences. Honestly, I wish more distros would adopt its philosophy. Elementary only adopted the dock. It’s just so intuitive. How do you install an application? You tap the installer, a box will pop up then you drag the icon to the application folder (in the same box) boom you are done. No setup wizards. How to uninstall? Drag icon from app folder to trash can. Boom done. How to open your app? Tap launch pad and you see all your apps alphabetically just click the one you want. You can keep your frequent ones on the dock. Settings is just another app in launchpad and everything is well labeled. You can even use your printers scanner without digging through menus. You might have issues with finder if your used to windows though and the approach to maximizing and minimizing windows will also get you for a while.
When my Galaxy 4 died I gave iPhone a chance with the SE. I can tell you that for most use cases, there is no discernible difference between iOS and modern android outside of a few fringe features. What struck me though was the power of an ecosystem. My Mac and iPhone just work well together. If they are on the same network they just sync in the background - you need to opt in. My internet went down, my iMac saw that my iPhone had 4g and gave me the option to connect. One click your up. Similar process with s droid would be multi step. You have airdrop which just allows you to send files to another Apple device near you with a tap without you even caring what mechanism it’s using. After google bricked my onHub router I opted to get Apples airport series. They are mostly interchangeable and your Mac and iOS device have a native way to configure it without you needing to mess with connecting to it yourself and blah. Setup WiFi on one device, all your other Apple devices have it. Lots of other cool stuff happen as you add more Apple devices. My wife now as a MacBook, an IPad s d the IPhone 8. She’s been windows android her life but the transition has been sublime. With family sharing any software purchase works for all of us, and not just apples stuff like iCloud and music, everything.
Hate Apple all you want but they get the core tenet that technology should just work without you thinking. That’s why they are the most valued company in the world14
After seeing so many rants about firefox quantum, I decided to give it a try. And now I am stuck at this screen for more than an hour. Is it windows or firefox? Guess, I'll have to look for the full installer.12
Tried to dual boot Arch with Windows yesterday.
Everything was going smoothly. Shrunk the C: partition, ran the installer, installed the OS fine. But it was still booting straight to Windows.
So I edited the BCD to point to Grub instead of Wilndows. Then the plan was to boot into Arch, find Windows, and add it to Grub, problem solved.
Wrong. I had forgotten to disable secure boot. Arch and Grub were booting in BIOS mode, but Windows was UEFI. Grub couldn't boot or even see Windows.
So now I was stuck with just Arch. So I flashed a Windows drive, booted from that, automatic startup repair failed. Opened up the command prompt, tried to rebuild the BCD from there. Surely I can just rebuild it and forget about trying to dual boot right? I just want to get back to being able to use my PC.
Wrong again. Didn't find Windows. Had to get rid of the BCD file before I could rebuild it, but couldn't find it. Found out that I could use diskpart to mount the system partition and assign it a drive letter, renamed the BCD, rebuilt it, and finally was able to reboot into Windows.
Learn from my arrogance. First time Linux users should not attempt to install Arch, let alone do it alongside Windows on the same disk.7
Developers who don’t use silent switches on their installers have a special place in Hell reserved for them!3
I'm installing Unity. Choosing the "sign in with Google" option, this leads to a screen asking for my Google account and password - *inside the installer*. No external browser.
What made them think it's legitimate? Why can't they just open my web browser for this? Why should I trust them with my email password?5
Fuck this shitty C ecosystem! Multible compilers, one standard complying, one hacked toghether? Only one GPL poisoned standart library, with no real chance of switching it, which prevents me of making staticly linked programs? And then there is microsofts compiler, with fucking ANSI support. Thanks. No dependency handling. Concurrency? pthreads. Are you fucking kidding. JSON? Have fun finding something static. Compile times where you can read entire books. Segfaults without one helpful info, so you have to debug with prints. And every library, every tool, installer, compiler, stdlib, anything is poisoned by GPL. But hey, its fast. And efficient. After you spend many slow and inefficient months developing something. I am so done with this shit.
Tommorow i will continue working with C on my backup project.
Did i mention that the stdlib has no features? Not even threading? Which is IN THE STANDARD?15
This was about two years ago, and is so fucking simple. But it's because I fucked up something so goddamn simple that I'll never be able to forget.
One of the stupidest fucking things I've done?
Went into the GNOME Disks utility trying to wipe a SanDisk Cruzer USB drive. BAM! There goes the entirety of my /dev/sda disk! Oh, and you know all partitions on that disk?? Gone!! Nothing I could do.
I don't know which pisses me off about myself more: The fact that Linux has more complicated tools that do the same exact job but make me think about what the actual fuck I'm doing thus preventing fuckups, or the fact that I was too fucking lazy to use them and decided to go with the dirt simple option and still managed to fuck myself over in the end...
Lesson for you kids that haven't fucked yourselves over in a way this dumb yet: ALWAYS have that backup installer USB somewhere. ALWAYS.
Just saved a co-worker by having an installer from 8 months ago in a folder called "desktop", 4 levels deep in folders called "desktop", all on my desktop. My hoarding habits finally saved the day!!!2
Windows makes me genuinely angry. Why is it that when I boot my computer, I am expected to wait 10+ minutes for windows to launch 5 startup applications, most of which are already patches for things that should be there to begin with, before I can even begin to use explorer to open GeForce experience because for some reason, windows said "Graphics drivers?! Who needs those?!" And threw them out the window! And then I get notifications about apps needing permissions to things, BUT IT WONT TELL ME WHICH ONE! I clicked the update driver notification 5 minutes ago and the installer literally just now opened up. This is a computer with a r3 processor and gtx970! It may not be the best, but it is by no means underpowered! Why must Halo online not have a Linux version? :(4
So I was on a conference in Berlin and opened up my laptop running Ubuntu 16.04.
Suddenly a huge sigh from the audience: *uhg* not unity...
Now since I'm usually working in windows and was limited by time I didn't have another option, and Ubuntu has an easy installer.
Now I'm looking into dual booting my other laptop (windows 10) so I want to know what distribution is according to you devranters best?
Currently considering Ubuntu and arch, anything I might have missed?19
Wanted to move Visual Studio to a different hard drive
So I uninstalled it and went to install it anew, only to find out the installation location was set to read only.
I then found out I had to run the installer with the arguments /uninstall and /force to force a complete uninstall, thus allowing me to change the installation directory... What the fuck Microsoft?1
Every god damn time I have to interact with windows I hate it more and more. I sold my old Dell PC, and said I'd install Win10 on it for the dude.
It's now been 2 hours of me trying to figure out why the Win10 installer complains about missing drivers, and trying to figure out exactly what drivers are missing, because they sure as absolute fuck don't tell you.
"A media driver your computer needs is missing. This could be a DVD, USB or Hard disk driver. If you have a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with the driver on it, please insert it now."
Well how the fuck am I supposed to know what driver you need? The least helpful error message in the history of computing....12
*Installing the new ubuntu* Install grub onto the HDD where you are installing the OS, thanks!
*Installer installs grub over Windows Boot Manager on an SSD*..... *sigh*3
Stories like the one I'm about to tell you are just another reason why people hate Windows. I know I usually preach 'Don't hate everything' and shit, but this is a real big fucking deal when it hits your desktop for no reason.
Now, onto the actual story...
Background: Playing with my Oculus, fixing issues like forgetting to use USB3 and stuff. I learned about an issue with Nvidia GPUs, where in Windows, they can only support 4 simultaneous displays per GPU. I only have the one GPU in my system, Nova, so I have to unplug a monitor to get Oculus and its virtual window thingy working. Alright, friend gave me idea of using my old GPU to drive one of my lesser used monitors, my right one. Great idea I thought, I'll install it a bit later.
A bit later...
I plug the GPU in (after 3 tries of missing the PCI-E slot, fuckers) and for some reason I'm getting boot issues. It's booting to the wrong drive, sometimes it'll not even bother TRYING to boot, suddenly one of my hard drives isn't even being recognized in BIOS, fuck. Alright, is the GPU at least being recognized? Shit, it isn't. FUCKFUCKFUCK.
Oh wait. I just forgot the power cable Duh. Plug that in, same issues. Alright, now I have no idea. Try desperately to boot, but it just won't I start getting boot error 0xc000000f. Critical device not found. Alrighty then. Fuck my life, eh?
Remove the GPU, look around a bit while frantically trying to boot the system, and I notice an oddly bent SATA cable. I look at it and the bastard is FRAYED AT THE END! Fuck, that's my main SSD! I finally replace the SATA cable and boot, still the same error... Boot into a recovery environment, and guess what?
Windows has decided to change my boot partition, ya know, the FUCKING C: DRIVE, from NTFS to RAW format, stripping it of formatting! What the actual fuck Microsoft? You just took a shit on yourself while having a seizure on the fucking MOON! Fine, fuck you, I have recovery USB! Oh, shit, that won't boot... I have an old installation! Boot ITS recovery, try desperately to find a fix online... CHKDSK C: /F... alright, repairing, awesome! Repaired, I can see data, but not boot. So now I'm at the point where I'm waiting for a USB installer to be created over USB 2.0. Wheeeeeeeeee. FML.
THESE are the times I usually hate Windows a lot. And I do. But it gets MOST of my work done. Except when it does this.
I'm already pissed, so don't go into the comments and just hate on Windows completely. Just a little. The main post is for the main hate. Deal with it. And I know that someone is going to come at me "Ohhhhh, you need FUCKIN LIIIIIIINUUUUUUUXXXXXXXX!' Want to know my response to that?
Updating Oxygen OS....
1. WARNING: You will lose root.... OK
2. Fastboot TWRP
3, Install TWRP
4. Flash Magisk
6. Reinstall xposed from Magisk Installer
10. Re-enable Gravitybox in xposed
All done... did i do something wrong?7
Anyone know the reason why Google removed the Android SDK from the Android Studio Installer? It's making me work harder in setting it up :/5
So been working with Linux for almost 10 years now, so am not new with this. But yesterday, a friend had difficulties accessing Wikipedia and their sister sites so I tried to help him out, you know, the usual way. Ping, Direct IP, DNS, and proxies/VPN, checking his /etc/hosts, but to no avail. Decided to download TeamViewer and install it so that I can help him out remotely. Went afk for 30min for dinner and when I came back, TeamViewer installation .Deb installer literally uninstalled every single software from my Kubuntu machine, from Spotify and slowly even my file manager and terminal was uninstalled. When it was over, even my grub was uninstalled.
Had anyone faced the same issue before?8
Trying to install Fedora to use some Linux stuff
- have to try booting up 3 times to boot into the live env successfully
- keyboard doesn't work, try booting up again
- installer crashes
Yeah fuck this back to Windows it is.13
All I wanted to do want uninstall an extension from Visual Studio and then a message came up "Please update Visual Studio Installer before proceeding."2
Needed my Windows 10 vm for parallax propeller development again. Should be pretty straightforward:
Start VM. Very unresponsive and Interface glitches with 2GB RAM so I give it 4GB to get on the desktop. Bruh, off to a good start.
Turns out that there are a few updates. So I try to install them. After two fucking hours Virtualbox screams at me for being out of storage. FFS Window$ updates managed to take up like 20GB extra.
Had to install it from scratch since my drive is full. Now my key won't activate because it is already activated. 15min support hotline, because 6*8 characters are necessary for a f*cking Phone activation.
1h of my life I will never get back, a barely viable operating system and I'm not even sure if USB passthrough works.
PSA:Gnome-Boxen has a superb unattended installer.18
Uninstalling Visual Studio is a mess. It'll leave behind hundreds of silly component, which is funny because the main reason I started the process was to clean up a possibly corrupt installation. It also left behind a Docker tool component, which I can't uninstall cause that installer needs VS itself :D1
I recently decided that I was going to broaden my palette and learn a bit of Java. I've had painful experiences in the past, but it's been a few major versions since I last did anything in it. Then I go to update the OS Java, and IT STILL FREAKING PROMPTS ME TO ADD YAHOO TOOLS TO MY BROWSER!!! ARE WE STILL IN THE 90s? DO YAHOO AND ORACLE STILL HAVE A DEAL? OR WAS SOME JAVA INSTALLER DEVELOPER TOO FREAKING LAZY TO REMOVE IT FROM TUE INSTALLER PROMPTS?!
And that's why I have a problem with Java.3
I see several post about linux, that made me remember the worst day of learning about linux installation many years ago.
I actually just want to know about linux, then suddenly install it without any knowledge about formatting harddisk and something like that.
And the first choice which come up is "install on entire harddisk" i think its like on windows installer and i go through next and next.
Then i got my whole data erased after that. At that time i feel regret.wanna burn my linux cd installer.
But the thirst for trying new is so high.its like wanna pay for the mistake.
After that i like to install many linux distro to choose which one suit my need.
I love linux!!3
Me installing software:
>"Software installed, must reboot"
>"Not the latest version, must update"
>Uhm, ok then
>Update dialogue pops up
>"Program is already open, please close program"
>"Update complete, must reboot"
Please kill me3
Look what I found in mall today, they just want to downgrade from Windows 10, I don't see activity, I want to see the partitions, I bet that they have a partition named Promos or something like this. The installer don't have activity.2
There was a time in my life when I had one of these multiple times a day. I was a windows user then. I’d click one thing and it would literally do the opposite. Shitty software vendors sold us software that had error messages with no text in them. Microsoft office yuk. You had to download unsigned drivers from the machines vendor and just install them, praying that there wasn’t a rootkit in the kernel code you were willfully injecting, and that there was no bloatware in the installer (there pretty much always was). There were multiple times that I downloaded the right driver from the right vendor and it refused to install because “this machine is not compatible” and I had to hex edit the binary to make it go.
File names that got too long would fuck the entire system up and you couldn’t delete them, at least not without a linux live cd or yes, dropping caches and hex editing the disk, the system would just randomly stop booting up one day and you’d never know why, sometimes it was literally because a dll file was missing or corrupted and I would just replace the file from another working machine and it would be fine. How the fuck even? But that “only” happened three times. All the other times I never ever figured out why my install was broken.
everything you wanted to do requires a mouse, and the c++ API was nonstandard for reasons that nobody alive understands.
I will never ever be going back. Had to go to therapy after being a windows user.5
Can somebody please tell me What is wrong with Microsoft and their broken piece of shit software?! (sorry to any Microsoft devs, if you read this). How the hell is it that their fucking installer and system repair features is this fucking useless? "Sorry, can't install on disk 0,cause the disk is in gpt format" NO SHIT, you were the fucking asshole who formatted it from the begining. Douchebag.10
pure genius! Ubuntu's firmware-xx-installer installation package for legacy network adapters doesn't install diddly. it *downloads* the firmware for you.
because yeah, people installing network adapter firmware obviously are doing it because they have a working network connection and what they really need help with is downloading the file 9_9
another 30min down the hole finding the actual firmware and the cutter tool for it1
Can you give me some Distros, that allow me to install them in a custom LVM (like the Text-Based Ubuntu installer)?1
OS can’t install the network driver because the installer can’t see the network card, the installer can’t see the network cars because the driver isn’t installed.1
How to create an installer according to ST microelectronics.
Display the entire license agreement using more.
At the end of this massive license agreement there is a y/n "do you accept". If you press any key other than y you have to start over.
So you have to slowly press enter for 5 minutes so you don't miss the confirmation which you will inevitably do multiple times anyway.
Also make this the last step in the installation so you have to waste time and bandwidth redownloading everything.6
installing vs2015 required running one installer. Uninstalling vs2015 requires spending an hour+ manually uninstalling every stupid add-on and supplementary program that was added by that one installer.3
Dat feel when you have to threaten your laptop with a reinstall, before it starts working...
Literally happened to me yesterday.
And to ad to the drama I didn't have a bootable USB ready, so I forced the laptop to create the installer, that would ultimately be its own demise 😅
Suddenly, halfway through the setup of the USB, everything began working 😜
Not a rant, I need advice on something.
There is this game that I used to play as a kid, a PC game. It's an indie game, very unpopular, but I really liked it back then and I think it would probably be successful on the mobile platform.
So, I tried to contact the guy who made it to ask him if he would make a mobile version but had no success, he didn't reply the email and I couldn't find him anywhere else (twitter, facebook, linkedin). I found a github page with his name but his last contribution was in feb/2015.
The game is REALLY old, the installer executable dates 2004.
So I was thinking that perhaps I could remake the game myself and launch it, maybe with different levels, etc, but giving credits to the guy who originally made it. And I'd include ads somewhere to get a little income for myself.
Question is, would it be anti-ethical of me to do it? I mean, the guy who made the game doesn't seems to care for it anymore since there were no more mentions of it anywhere, and the last version is 1.01.
I just wanted advice from you guys, I'd be really glad to see the game running on mobile because it was a fun part of my childhood.7
Last weak I tried to use Linux Arch on my VM. The only Linux distribution I'm used to is Ubuntu and the fist time I launched Arch I completely forgot that it was " do it yourself ". And that the ISO isn't actually a fancy installer like the Ubuntu one.
So I started following a guide and found out that the arch wiki is actually the way to go.
I searched for 1 hour how to change the keyboard to swiss-french which was actually pretty simple.
After that exhausting research that made me realise how ignorant I am with UNIX universe, I finally tried to install the thing.
When I was done installing, it didn't want to boot after I restarted. I got stuck at the 'Booting...' screen. After a few tries I lost all my energy and motivation.
Tl;dr: Tried Arch Linux, realised I had no idea, gave up after a few tries5
A friend of mine who wants to learn about Linux has a stronger will than me, as I think installing Linux in 2020 is gonna break me but he's still stoked as shit. I'm fucking serious. He asked me to install several distros, in order of interest (because they all fucking failed, because of fucking course they did) on a USB HDD he was using just for this.
We tried, in order:
Arch: initramfs wiped his Windows HDD when it crashed. IDFK how, but it zeroed the top 32KB of the drive. It wasn't even the right HDD...
Linux Mint: nvidia drivers refused to see his GPU after install. No matter what we did. Live media saw it fine until it was installed on the external drive, too.
Debian: Installer couldn't see the external HDD, ever. No matter what we did. It had a /dev entry, lsblk and fdisk saw it, I could format and mount it, but the installer crashed when it refreshed the device list when it was present. Every goddamn time.
Fedora: Installer broke halfway through as an executable (or 70) were corrupted, but the disc matched the ISO and the ISO sums correctly, so this is apparently how it was packed and shipped.
CentOS: Refused to boot. Just entirely. GRUB would go to load the kernel and it'd hang.
All ISOs and discs were verified as matching provided sums using MD5 and SHA256. How the fuck is Linux so fucking hard to get working on older hardware in 2020? Worked great in 2008, worked great in 2018, why is 2020 such a goddamn issue?13
"Warning: install_driver.exe couldn't be copied." *clicks on ignore* "Driver successfully installed."... Windows, why have I expected exactly that? Occured while installing OnePlus smartphone drivers.1
Installed JDK 8 patch 111 in preparation for an upgrade to our application servers . The app installer requires patch 45 or above. Come to find out the app installer can only deal with a 2 digit patch number. Uninstalled JDK 8 patch 111 to install patch 92 only to find that patch 92 installer won't work because patch 111 has messed with the registry and didn't do a thorough cleanup during the uninstall.1
Why the hell does this installer need to run tests for about an hour, when I only want to install the update?????4
Just helped in the little 'Büdchen' (kiosk comes close, but in reality it is more of an little super market) around the corner to Update the firmware of a money bill verifier and counter... As there are new 50 Euro bills.
God. Serial to USB. After running installer and starting firmware update, the owner was a bit frightened as it took so long....
Setup. 30 secs. Firmware. 6 Minutes. XD
sick of all these frickin linux side distros that don't even have a installer that works properly...1
10 hours ago I was trying to install manjaro on my laptop. I have run into problems with the nvidicancer drivers, as one would expect, but at least I had a working OS. I was following a video tutorial that instructed me to tweak some grub settings, and I was able to do it with no problem.
Now on the other hand, I am following the EXACT SAME procedure (same partition, same installer, same settings),but after I update-grub,everything freezes including the command itself.
How is it possible that doing the exact same procedure at different times of the day gives me two different results? Is my laptop sentient and simply "not in the mood" anymore, or what the fuck?7
Is there a way to sign code for free (or atleast not need to pay over £200 for it)? Im a student and cant really afford much but I have been working on a website and made an electron build for it, however downloading the installer prompts the user to discard it in chrome, then running the installer prompts the user to select do not run in the windows security thingy as its from another computer.
What would be the best way around this if I cant get a certificate for it?2
What dark, heathen God do I have to sacrifice to in order to get CUDA 9.2 installed on a machine? For the love of Christ Nvidia, just make a functional fucking installer for once in your God forsaken life, you're a Fortune 500 company. Why does everything have to be so incredibly janky with you?4
The installer is bouncing between 6 seconds and 10 seconds. It's been 20 and I'm starting to think neither is right.
I just deleted two big partitions in the windows installer to make an even bigger one. Now I have two separate unallocated spaces. Nice.7
What absolute fucking imbecile thought an upper limit of 6.0.0 would make sense for max supported PHP version on the entire Magento 1.9.3.X code base. Not to mention the installer is broken on account of them not fucking understanding InnoDB is default engine in MySQL.
Seriously Mage Rage is real.5
I assume that you did some Windows development.
I just made my WPF and want to publish. But VS created setup.exe for me. I want to make my own installer. How do I get the application files? not the setup file?
Please help. Thanks.4
One of the best things about linux is the ease with which you can update packages, just sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade. None of that stupid installer which downloads an updater which updates the program shit.
Fuck external stake holders, like politicians, those know-nothings, that pump their ego by finding multiple "issues" with our software like how we display the privacy data agreement and impose their stupid fucking nonsense rules on our software. Even if it is not part in any official law or GDPR
So there is the request that one needs to scroll down the whole data privacy crap nobody reads until you can press "Continue" and we *have* to implement that shit. Although it is completely out of line with Apple's usual installer handling. Nobody will understand it. It cripples the workflow.
But some Mr. Important demanded it, as if he is protecting users with this and makes a great contribution to the data privacy in our country. Yeah! And guy is so high up, unreachable for us through all the layers of other people, leaving us no time and means to dissuade this shitty request. If all your 'ideas' are so great you should not be allowed to do jack shit.1
So a friend of mine asks me to help him install Python on his Win 10 machine. I go to python.org, downlowd 3.6 and fire up the installer.
Now the computer is pretty sluggish, so I decide to see what's hogging the CPU... Control Shift Esc... Now feckin' task manager is not responding. Just wow! I'd say you're rightly screwed once that start's happening...
Anyway I got python set up in the end, and apparently the laptop's been slow for ages.
I'm studying atm and I survived Haskell, SKI, ... now, in the second semester we started with Python (yeay ♡) and Java (that's fine).
One of the first exercises is about installing Jython ('cause it's good, right? /sarcasm off), using the lecturer's module and write some code for it. It's about painting some shitty graphics *gasp*...
I use PyCharm (not really necessary for these crappy exercises) and programming on Windows and/or Linux.
Downloaded Jython, installed it, set it as interpreter - works fine (win10, pycharm).
Some students got weird errors using linux - for me it's the same but meh Idc.
Today I tried using Jython on my notebook, too (win10, pycharm). Downloaded it from the Jython Project website. Can't update pip, can't run modules - error is about fckin charsets...
Some other student figured out - wrong version of Jython. The newer version has some bug fixes.
2.7.1 is the one and only - the download section of their website offers 2.7.0 as latest release...
So - how to know there is a version 2.7.1?
#1 version control website = Wikipedia
So... there is a blog, guy's writing about this release - this installer is hosted at maven central. Yeay. Obvious. Thanks.
Can't describe such stupidity - maybe it's the user again 😂
I'll have bring windows back onto my laptop. Planing to dual boot it with arch. I have to an ssd and an hdd. I plan to install both on the ssd and continue to use the hdd for data. But I'm a but paranoid.
Would the windows installer dare to overwrite the data on my, without my permission?12
Can one of you help me?
I wanted to do a minimal Fedora install on my laptop, but the WiFi isn't working. The wifi-card uses the ath10k_PCI driver.
It works perfectly fine in the live-iso and the installer, but not in the minimal installation.6
Once I had to integrate an analytics mechanism into a product my company was selling. Due to EU laws we had to put an opt-out checkbox into the installer. Took me a while to hack my way around various technical and legal impediments, but I got it done.
Long story short, product rolled out and we got data from about 0.1% our customers. Almost everybody opted out :/7
Being the novice Linux user as I was, I spent nearly all night trying to configure dual boot with some distro (maybe Debian). At about 3 or 4am I was going through the distro's installer and confirmed the previously select partition actions, one of which wipe the wrong partition. 1TB gone 😅👍
Good thing was it was a fresh start for serous projects.
I just tried to download Photoshop CC. On Linux. Just to give it a try in Wine 3.0 and see if it works.
Adobe rejected my humble request with "Your operating system is not supported."
I switched my user-agent to Windows and voila, it tried to give me a dmg installer.
A. Fucking. Mac. Installer.
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED DO TO WITH THAT ADOBE YOU STUPID CUNT!12
To use Unity with VS you have to get Unity Build Tools as a plugin.
Alright, I'll download that.
Oh but now there's an error with connecting to unity, I need to get a newer VS and switch to the 2018 version of the engine.
Ok fine that's annoying but I guess I might as well upgrade.
Oh now there's no Intellisense? I guess I need to reload my project.
Oh what's this? Some major build error due to a missing component from Vs 2015?
This is getting stupid, fine let me install it.
Oh but to install the component you need to rerun the installer for VS, fine I'll redownload that.
Oh but apparently the installer _I JUST DOWNLOADED A FEW SECONDS AGO_ is outdated and needs to be upgraded. I can't _not_ update the installer and still install the components because that would be stupid, why would we let the developer decide what versions to use obviously they don't know what they're doing I mean it's not like they know how to use computers?
To get simple code completion, let's force developers to download an installer that then needs to be updated to install a component for this giant IDE that also requires the 2015 version of the IDE to be installed alongside a special plugin and patch designed for a specific game engine.
All this. For fucking code completion. I can't even get Intellisense to work in VSCode without fixing the issue since the C# extension in VSCode just binds to Visual Studio tools and runs the same shit with a different GUI.10
My job between in

I'm really fed up working with android studio.
I had to use it on my vocational training. I had lubuntu there, and we weren't allowed to bring along our own laptops. In my desktop I had ubuntu and windows 7.
I had to work with my project made in lubuntu at home, and it didn't work, on neither OS. I eventually tested I wasn't able to run the project cross plataform thanks to my desktop, but when I installed android studio on my laptop, it seems like it doesn't work with the same OS but a slightly (one week) version later.
I had to scrap the whole project on my desktop, copy the laptop's installer into desktop's window and make it all over again in order to be able to use the same project in both of them.... Until I updated. I updated both of them without reinstalling them, and the gradle never agreed again.
After two years I'm trying again and this problem still exists... And gradle is now even slower to crash.
Package Installer on android needs to show something other than just the progress bar. Even a basic log like windows installers that say, "copying this, extracting this, done..." If it affects the minimalism of the interface, they could try doing what Tor browser does- swipe to see a log. It just feels heartbreaking to wait 5 long minutes for it to process on this tortoise device, and then get, "app not installed." with an OK button. :( Like, whyyyy? There should be a "THAT'S NOT OK" button.
Is there any magisk module for this? Or some other tweak?4
I fucking hate working with older software
I have a visual installer project, and it automatically finds the dependencies to make the setup file.
if I rebuild a certain reference, in which I made no changes, and then refresh the dependencies, it will add another dependency that already exists, but outside the dependency folder. So now I have two exactly fucking the same dependencies.
i can remove it, but removing it doesn't change any of my files. So there is nothing to commit. If you restart the project, its back.
And first it required me to actually add the dll to the build folder before it would build. And suddenly not anymore.
Im pretty sure its either the outdated installer software or visual studio 2013 fucking with me.
It also randomly added a dependency from blend. Which is apparently a known bug, but never got fixed in the two updates after they recognized it as a bug.
Fuxx you microsoft...
Radeon gives notification about update. Update shows 2 major updates. Downloading update. Installer of update says its already up-to-date. What the fuck AMD and Intel?
Ps: How come that Windows still having issues with docking stations and different resolutions when (un)plugging?3
Soooo i recently wanted to install FreeBSD on one of my servers. I configured the raidcard and booted the installer. Installation goes normaly. Sever restarts and begins looping. After tearing apart every firmware on this machine and going to bed, a thought was crossing my mind: What if the UEFI doesnt boot the disk? What if the RAID card does? What if the RAID card cannot boot GPT tables?
Next thing iin the morning, i reinstall freebsd with MBR. And it works (after my NICs stopped working, so i had tp reinstall another time). I STILL GOT IT! That wasnt the problem we all fear to cannot solve anymore ^^5
Hey guys, I just made a small contribution to the world of free code. It's a an install script for installing Apache Spark on windows with all its dependencies and quirks. Installing it on Windows is not so straightforward as some of you might know. This script should make everything good to go.
I wanted to automate the install of a toolchain which had just a manual install script. Piped `yes` into the installer and it worked just fine. Only downside, it always installs to 'y' 😅
Another 'fun' rant
Wrote a new server application and got the request from customer services to make it compatible with a slightly older DB version.
Today, CS asked me to install everything on the customer's test environment so I made a build and installed it there.
Wanted to run the service, no .Net framework 4.7.1 installed. Fine, download the installer ...
Start installing .Net framework 'unsupported OS'. Started looking into it. Customer is still running an old unsupported Windows Server 2008 ...
Asked some colleagues whether this was normal. Apparently, yes.
Seems CS isn't capable of telling customers to at least have a supported windows version when they want our software. As if security issues due to people here not understanding TCP/IP isn't enough, we now have security issues due to old, unsupported Windows versions.
Note to self: never trust anyone who says that 'security is the most important thing in our software enviornment'.
So a bit ago I posted a rant saying that I would be getting ElementaryOS onto my computer and trying it out, buckle up kiddos because this goes to shit in just a moment.
I did everything right, used Rufus correctly and didn't destroy my computer nor my installer, good! I set it up, get everything going and everything is running smoothly. One problem... I couldn't download **any** programs that weren't from the Ubuntu Store, which really annoyed me because I like to use Brackets, and I couldn't find it in the UStore...
So I messed up **really** bad here... I didn't *format* my Elementary Installer, but tried to delete the files like a pleb and stick an Ubuntu ISO in it's place, I didn't even think on going through Rufus again, I just slapped that shit in there without a thought.
I restart my computer, I read a forum stating that I would get an option that allows Ubuntu (or another Linux distro) to take over the partition of a previous distro. Neat! Another bloody problem is that I decided to use "Win + R" and manually delete the Elementary partition **myself**... What is even wrong with me...
So I restarted it, and before my father left to go shopping, he said I should go into the BIOS to change the boot order (Now this is where I **really fucked up**. Thought what I said before was bad?).
Cool, so I boot my PC and go into the BIOS, now I couldn't figure out on my computer where the boot order was, when it was right in my face the whole damn time... I managed to almost destroy my entire BIOS with the fucking file in my USB stick, because I was being an idiot...
I restart, GRUB opens up with a black screen and white text in the top left corner, know what the most important line is in that small block of words? "unknown filesystem"... Of fucking course I fucked it that bad, GRUB didn't even give me the option of just using Windows 10 instead, just quietly gave me the middle finger since I basically nearly fucked everything.
What's funny is that I had someone (who lives with us, let's call him Jeff) look at my computer because I was done being a dumbass.
He told me that I still had my BIOS (which was a bloody relief, because I thought I basically destroyed my computer doing what I did) and that all I need to do is fix the installer I tried to use.
I gave him the USB and just started to play on my phone.
Then I remembered something maybe an hour or so ago... I had an older installer that I used on my shitty laptop awhile back, if I can find it again I could just use that instead of waiting on Jeff. I dug around my room and found the USB that had a working Ubuntu ISO on, correctly placed inside this time.
I basically walked up to my computer, plugged it in and started it up, and it worked. I got Ubuntu and Windows 10 back, and I was basically laughing like I just saved a man's life.
Moral of this story: Don't be like me and do something stupid, especially if you don't know what the fuck you're attempting at...
*Downloads vs community and runs installer*
"An update for the installer needs to be downloaded"
"Installer will now download vs community"
*15gb later, runs vs community and starts new c# console app*
"C# development kit needs to be downloaded"
*Downloads c# development kit*
"Windows updates are ready to be installed"
Fuck. This. Shit.2
WHICH EVER IDIOT PROGRAMMED HALYARD SHOULD DIE A SLOW DEATH IN HELL!!!
A CD TOOL HAVING THE WORST INSTALLER EVER IS THE BIGGEST FUCKING JOKE YOU COULD COME UP WITH!!! FUCK NETFLIX FUCK SPINNAKER FUCK EVERY BIT OF SHIT TOOLING THAT COMES FROM IT!!!!!
Why is there no easier way to write an installer for windows app with WiX Toolset than writing everything myself in XML? Wtf!?2
Today at work, I had to do a dry run of our new production environment config for our VM server.
So I setup ESXi in a vm in my workstation. Installed it it, no problem. Setup some VMs, still going good. Then my supervisor came and said I have to make some tweaks and use vCenter. I thought: meh, that came late but ok. Download the vCenter installer from our internal CDN and ran it. Sorry general config, blah blah blah. "Setup with embedded or external platform service controller?" -"Embedded" - "minimal requirements: 11GB ram, 250GB disk storage, 2 CPU cores". Well... Fuck me. My workstation specs: 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, 4 cores.
What the bloody fucking hell does this stuff need 250 GB disk space for?!
Well at least I've got a permanent upgrade for my workstation.1
Stipid piece of shit nvidia cuda development kit installer.
"Yeah, you can extract and install the files wherever you want, but I'll delete BOTH directories if you do so"
Fucking 3 times I tried to install this shit untill i realized this.
Korora 26 finally came out and I wanted to install it on my new laptop. I'd previously put Ubuntu MATE on there, with Cinnamon kind of tacked on, but it wasn't great, mostly because it wasn't Korora.
Unfortunately, Korora (and Fedora) still have a bug in the installer where it will complain if your /boot/efi partition is not on /dev/sda, which in my case it was on my M.2 drive. However, I was able to eventually get it working.
But when I booted it up and tried to log in, it would take me back to the log in screen. I logged into a TTY, where I was reminded that when I had set up my Ubuntu install, I had chosen to encrypt the home folder.
Not knowing how to set up the eCryptFS with an existing encrypted home folder setup, I opted to wipe the drive and reinstall from scratch--I had a backup of most of my files from the Ubuntu installation. However, I lost some very important documents that I'd set up since then.
Fast forward to today where my laptop won't boot unless it is either a.) unplugged with just the battery or b.) plugged in without the battery, with a different power cable from the one I got with the computer.
Thankfully the people responded quickly after I mentioned I was having issues. Hopefully it doesn't get worse...
I'm trying to install ubuntu server 19.04 on a machine that also has windows 10 on it. The SSD is already split into two parts, one is an ntfs partition for windows and the other is free space with no partition. That's where I want to install the server, but the installer doesn't seem to be aware of the windows partition and I don't want to accidentally format it, overwrite it or make it unbootable.
Is it even possible to dual boot with ubntu server 19.04?10
This moment, when a single installer installs 43 launchbars for IE, and you arent allowed to install Linux...
Okay, I've been thinking on this all week.
Microsoft Office (All of it)
Adobe Creative Cloud (Only The Management Software / Installer)
OMFG bless the guy maintaining MikTex for Windows, if only had installed this instead of TexLive the first time around I'd probably be a lot more sane right now (and I would have passed more uni exams).
I genuinely wanna shout my lungs out in frustration... I wasted over a fucking month trying to get my TexLive install to work the way I wanted it to, and now with just a simple automatic installer everything works exactly the way I wish it did, it's so fucking perfect!
Barely working on c++ in recent years. Wanting to delete visual studio to free some space only to be asked to update my visual studio installer which ends up taking more space.
It is just temporary considering I plan on deleting that installer too but this is just plain stupid to be asked to install something so you could uninstall...1
I first was sceptical because the installer for Visual Studio installed everything except Visual Studio.
But after a restart VS popped up in my programs list.
I spent the whole day of yesterday trying to install the windows anniversary update after a clean Windows installation. Every time i tried to update it would go through 30% completion and then... BSOD, claiming that i didnt had a boot device. WUT? Anyway, after 5h of research and no success, i created a bootable usb installer and tried to install Windows 10 Education (which is my license). After the 1st restart... Error: Windows could not complete the installation. OH GOD WHY ME? After another hour i figured it out. Somehow i needed to install the version Windows Home and after the installation update to Student. DAMN WHAT A DAY...2
When Windows 10 will let me install the .NET 4.6.2 SDK and I can compile my application, but I go to run it appearently the framework isn't installed.
Ok, doesnt make any fucking sense, but sure I'll download the runtime not the SDK. I start uo the runtime installer "Error: .NET 4.6.2 is already installed".
Um no fucker it's not. Look around and Microsoft says that .NET 4.6.2 comes in the Windows 10 Anniversary update. Which I have....
Says to check the registry to see what version I have installed. I have the correct update number, but it says only .NET 4.6.0 something is installed.
So I was installing ubuntu alongside windows in dual boot.
The installer had some problems while partitioning the disk, so I did it manually using GParted. Then the installer had some problems while installing GRUB.
Now I got to know that my windows partition has been corrupted and ubuntu isn't installing.
My fully functional laptop is now reduced to metal crap with no OS being able to boot. Fuck Ubunu. Fuck Linux. -_-4
I enjoy Visual Studio, but the installer is GARBAGE.
My install of 2017 didn't come with a certain package, so I go to the installer to add it. Thing constantly fails with "could not find file" in the txt log. Decided I might as well update studio while I'm here. Turns out I had python packages for it too, since during this update python decided to have a fit in another project because modules and pylint suddenly disappeared.
My last dew days so far: learn the new angular 4. BAM, new angular 5 is announced. Try to install CLI. Errors with node.js/npm. Solutions: install different version of nodejs. I do that using 'n' to keep diff vers of node.js (i need them). CLI installer throws a different error. Google error. Solution: install yet another ver of node.js. Repeat issues! Try something different. Run into another dependency issue (requires another ver of ruby. ugh!) Screw it all. Continue to Angular tutorial. Check out live example. Doesn't work. Chrome throws ton of errors, Yet tutorial example works in FF. FML!4
Always check pre-selected defaults!
Had to reinstall Xamarin from the VS2015 installer, and didn't catch the installer having the check boxes for "Windows Phone 8.1 SDK" ticked. Could there be any more complete and utter waste of disk space, with the possible exception of Justin Bieber videos?
WINDOWS REFUSES TO INSTALL TO EXTERNAL DRIVES. I ONLY FIGURE THIS OUT AFTER SPENDING 2 DAYS TRYING TO GET THE INSTALLER RUNNING IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Ok so I had to make a revision on a PDF with JS that was being tested to fix some bugs, I hadn't touched it or Acrobat Reader for more than a month I think but I could work on it well back then.
I had to see the problem first so when I go and open it with Adobe Reader, it crashes. Weird. I can't get it to work.
Well I'm reinstalling it then.
After downloading the (now correct, I tried to use an old one I had and lost some time) installer, I tried to install it and it asked me to close Outlook and Excel. Weirder.
I do, and after finishing it said "you have a newer version, open it?". Super weird. Of course when I accepted it didn't work.
I uninstall my current installation and while uninstalling it asks me to close Chrome. Ok now I'm not ok with this shit.
I needed to fix it in some minutes and it ended up taking hours.4
Im setting up a cPanel Dev server for the very first time. I need to install CentOS and will be doing it through a USB. I was able to burn the iso but it wont boot :( How do I boot into the installer? :((2
Here's how my day's been going:
- decided to learn a quite popular JS framework
- installed with official installer
- used official tool to create an empty project
- ERROR! 20mins of debugging fixed it
- followed the getting started guide
- ANOTHER ERROR!
- "I must be doing something wrong"
- pulled the *official* demo project
- A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ERROR!
- "Fuck it! I'm making this from scratch"
(the framework is Meteor, btw. fuck Meteor)9
What a holy shit the fucking Windows File History and all the rubbish from the Microsoft installer files!! Is it so difficult to remove automatically the unnecessary packages!!! My SSD partition for Windows is completely full of rubbish!!4
This might be a highly specific mistake but, never ever uninstall the ms-office package installed on your work pc, linked to your corporate ms account. And then try to install another version from an installer you have lying around. Internal Support Team wasn't happy. 😅
FUCK MS AND ITS FUCKING NOT SORTET WEBSITE WHERE YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD A FUCKING INSTALLER WHICH INSTALLS PLENTY OF PROGRAMMS I DONT FUCKING NEED AND NOT THE ONE I NEED
I have a new laptop and I copied my Firefox version 56.0.2.dmg installer with old Firefox profile. Now I still have a working Downthemall extension haha so happy it worked 😇1
Expected to know everything about C# when all you've done is used Visual Studio to build an installer that bundles up someone else's C# app.
I'm a Web Dev not a magician (although at times I feel like it 😊).
Yes I've got a bit of the knowledge that's managed to get into my brain via osmosis but not mission critical level stuff.2
We should bring back the death sentence by hanging for those fucking retards who show their software update notifications as fucking popups after I start the program. No, notepad++, I don't give a fuck about your update. Fuck you FileZilla, I'm on a hurry, stop shoving your almost full screen update window in my face. Oh and the visual studio installer. Don't even get me started on the visual studio installer.
Would it be too difficult to show the update notification on the bottom of the window on the status bar? Maybe with a higher contrast color so it's more noticeable?11
That Microshit motherfucker, Windows 10, is constantly messing up AMD drivers by "updating them out".
I did a clean reinstall, moved past the retarded Crimson installer hanging up on branding components, and configured everything. I had to reboot, and that little twat of an OS prompted me with "just a second, Windows is updating" reboot screen, after which the drivers are fucked up again. And that is the second time it has done that.
I just had to move my screen back out of my punching radius, otherwise I would probably had to buy a new one.
Linux with GPU passthrough seems to be the only sane option theesedays.7
Spend an entire day on getting an auto-update feature into my cordova app...
APK installer doesn't open, error message doesn't give me any solutions...
exposed beyond app through Intent.getData()
When you work with a client who will only use Fireworks for graphics but you only have one dying old machine with a licensed copy and Adobe won't give you keys even though you bought them years ago (and can prove it!) and you can't buy new keys because they don't sell them and even if we had them we can't download it any more.
WTF Adobe!! It's a dead product! We don't want support or anything. Just give us the feckin' keys and the bloody installer!!4
How the does it make sense that I need .NET Framework to uninstall VS Build Tools? The installer runs, but then fails. Just delete your damned files and registry keys.2
Guys so I'm using that CMD method to download offline installer for vs 2017. Can I stop and download again tmrw. Or is there a way to pause?1
Anyone playing Star Trek Online via Wine, PlayOnMac, CrossOver, or WineBottler? They yanked the official Mac installer in February and I refuse to allocate space for bootcamp or my Macbook Pro or a dual boot on my hackintosh. I got it working momentarily on crossover but something went wrong.
Damn you Cryptic Studios!
Did a "harmless" upgrade of our build Mac's os yesterday morning so we could follow up with an XCode upgrade. At 4pm I was still trying to get all the builds working.
The upgrade had borked Mono, the gem installer and lits of other stuff without saying anything. And XCode had invented a new build warning which it felt was a breaking change for no damn reason T_T
A new dev hire, just said that after a Windows update all her files, settings, are deleted. Thankfully it was still in recycle bin. I don't know who's at fault, but I had a fix to this problem.
Linux. Passed her the ubuntu installer USB key.6
Was cleaning up a super slow, malware-riddled laptop last week. Years of cruft and multiple users (according to the owner) made it pretty much unable months ago. I managed to remove the malware and a lot of junk software installed, but I held off on the 155 (!!!) pending updates Windows 7 wanted to install. See, the malware layers had damaged the registry and broke some things (especially after I removed it). I intended to perform a clean installation of Windows to clear it all up, making the updates pointless. I then realized there was a BIOS update. So I downloaded the update, ran the installer, agreed to the warning to not disconnect power, and "understood" that a restart would be required.
I forgot about pending updates until they started to install when Windows was going to restart. It took from 4:45 PM to 8:30 PM to install all 155 pending updates, then the computer restarted.
Hope to find some help here. So i got a MacBook Pro (2015) from my Workplace and upgraded it to High Sierra. I set everything up and it worked fine untill i did some User configurations. I couldnt access the Settings in preferences because my password was wrong (it wasnt really, but it didnt accept it). So i thought reinstalling would help. I did the reinstall process but got an error at the end of it. “Could not create a reboot partition”. I don’t remember the message exactly. So I have tried several things and hope someone can give me a hint.
- reinstall via cmd + r -> failed
- made a time machine backup from my private MacBook (High Sierra) and put it in my work MacBook -> failed
- recovery from internet -> failed
- external drive with High Sierra installer and booting it from there -> failed
Hope you guys have a clue what to do. Thank you :).8
I was installing the .NET framework so I could run DSIII, but after installing it, it would still complain and not run. So I got a different version and... still nothing. Then I tried to fucking uninstall it, but it wasn't it the installed programs, so I got an utility that was supposed to uninstall it, but then the installer said it was already installed. So I deleted to actual files manually and even then it wouldn't bloody reinstall. Except that programs that were working before, just stopped working.
At which point I just reinstalled fucking windows.3
The amount of times I've had to stare at a "Getting Windows ready" screen when I want to get work done is driving me insane. The amount of times I've wondered why my pc is slowing down to a crawl just to find out that damn installer worker is claiming my cpu or the update module is using my network to download updates.Windows 10 is a cancer on systems that do not have spare resources.
Update on the HP Stream tablet:
I finally realized that I could have a microSD card in the device with the Onboard package on it to install on a LiveUSB in order to install anything.
Due to another 'ranter's suggestion, I started with all the Debian spins, but none of them had a graphical .deb package installer (which is really strange).
I finally went back to Ubuntu MATE, which does have the Onboard application already installed (which I'm not sure why I didn't notice that the first time), and it's now officially installing...
More updates at 11.
I have to reimplement a couple of complicated OOXML parsers (docx, pptx, vsdx, etc). Actually, I’ve implemented them in Python ~5 years ago but now I have to improve them and add support for nested/embedded formats and some other stuff. As you could expect, none of the OOXML validators are valid themselves, so it's better to have an MS product installed locally, just to get reassured that everything works fine and the parser produces the format that's recognizable by M$.
So I’ve bought a key on eBay (yep, I’m not paying full price for this shit: release valid validators first, bitches; don't make me buy things I don't need). The key is valid, everything is fine. But no, you just cannot have a link to download this fucking installer, no-no-no-no. We won't give you a link until after you enter a key. FEEL DEPENDENT. OBEY.
But I digress. Here's their MANUAL about DOWNLOADING the INSTALLER:
So, what's wrong with it? Oh, just a minor misunderstanding. They always give you a link to download an exe-installer. Even if you use Safari.
Why everything is so fucked?2
Been trying to use the Qt Installer Framework to build an installer. Seemed very appealing, cross-platform support, etc.
It is very easy to do the standard setup...anything beyond that you better be prepared to waist alot of time and get get half working implementations.
Want install over a previous version? Nope!
Want good documentation? Sorry.
User supported community to at least offer some help? Non existent.
I need to download an installer from my Visual Studio Subscription, and I find out the hard way our subscription manager reassigned my subscription to someone else. Now I lost access to my licenses.
And the subscription manager doesn't reply to his emails.
I guess that SQL Server setup can wait.
