//long rant but worth it ;)
In our class, we had some writing in Word.
I was the smart PC guy in the class which everybody asked for info. Even the teacher sometimes asked me.
There was a girl in class which I didn't really like, because she had a snoopy attitude and thought she is a queen.
In MC Word you can hide the toolbar with the little arrow on the top right below the close button.
Somehow the girl hid the toolbar and didn't know to let it reappear again. After half a hour the teacher got to the next lesson.
She held her hand up and reported to the teacher that here PC has problems. After 10 minutes try & error from the teacher he even didn't get it.
Now the teacher started the rant and shout at her: "How did you even manage to do this? Did you upload a virus? I bet it is a virus! Do you know how much it costs to repair this pc? It's sure over 1000 $."
The rant continued for 15 minutes. After that I felt a bit guilty and even I didn't like that girl, but nobody deserves such a harsh treatment.
Without saying anything I went to the computer, clicked the little arrow and the problem was solved. The teacher didn't say anything to this topic. Just said we can go early.
Sometimes dump people make a elephant out of a fly, just because they don’t know it better…
Well the girl still stayed a cunt till the end of my scholarship.16
Mac: Suddenly turns off
Me: Fuck my code..F***
Mac: No response at all
Me: reset SMC etc etc
Mac: I am dead (no battery detection, dies after 10 min on power adaptor)
Me: Skips a heart beat..(Git, oh yea git)
**Takes Mac to store, After diagnosis**
Apple Freaking Genius (AG): Your Mac has a mother board problem it needs to be replaced.
Me: Hmm what is the problem exactly??
AG: Issues in logic board and some other components.
Me: How much?
AG: Out of warranty so $$$ (60% of original amount)
Me: (wtf?) Really
AG: It's entire motherboard replacement .. bla bla
**Bring it home > open > everything seems ok on multimeter as per circuit diagram > finally finds a voltage drop that is not consistent > minute short circuit > remove > check further > nothing else > reassemble > hit power button > starts fine > freaking battery detected > works fine**
0 $ repair
Fixes two more devices @ 0 $ in friend circle
Builds a raspberry pi backup laptop with 3d printed body..Ubuntu.. you know can't live without a computer
Not my mom, but my girlfriends grandmother. I told her that I am a software developer, a guy who makes the programs which run on computers.
She became really excited about that, because finally she found someone to repair her 40-year-old radio. I told her that I have no fucking idea about radios, but she did not want to hear that. So I looked at the case, randomly pushed some buttons and again told her, that I could not find the broken part, let alone repair it. But she didn't listen and told me to open the case and look inside.
Sighingly I opened the radio, looked at the inner parts and told her once more, that I don't know anything about this stuff. She told me to look more closely. About to lose my mind about this pointless task, I finally told her, that "the transistor" is the problem and that the best thing she could do is to throw it away and buy a new radio. She was happy with that answer.20
UPDATE: I have my dream job.
About a year ago I commented on Devrant that I was having some hard luck interviewing for development jobs.
Shortly after my post I decided to lower my expectations and took a job at a tech support call center.(3 month contract)
After getting a little experience(Not just a degree) I was able to land a hardware support job at a fortune 500 company.(Not what a programmer really wants 😂)
I worked hard and started writing tools at home to help with the job. I started giving them out to the other techs and put them on a little internal website for easy access.
About 3 months ago I just became a software engineer within the company.(after 6 months of hardware repair.) The main reason I got the job was because I showed them how much overtime and extra work I had done and that the techs relied on my software to do there jobs and that I was dependable.
It was hard work but it was worth it. And I built software that I never would have done if I hadn't taken this "lower job"
So keep your chin up and your fingers on the keys, I was in your shoes a year ago. 😉12
Tips for all the programmers out there:
- A programmer is not a PC repair man, just no one seems to remember about that
- Programming is thinking, not typing.
Counting starts from zero, not one.
- Even after completing a degree and courses and working on IT projects, learning never stops. If you want to stay competitive you should also work on personal projects that force you to use languages and software you never work with on the job.
- You don’t need serious math skills to be a developer. However, you’ll need basic algebra, logic, strong problem-solving skills, and most of all, patience.
- You don’t need a degree to be a developer - programming is like almost any profession: if you’re good at it, people will pay you for your skills, regardless of how you got there.
- Sleeping with a problem, can actually solve it.13
Stolen from an awesome book but my new favourite line ;)
Someone: “Can you repair my computer， it`s not working anymore?”
Me: “Do you call Leonardo Dicaprio when your Tv is broken?”7
Four months ago changed a laptop failing hdd and give it back to customer. Today I got a 30 minutes call because the computer "is not like before the repair, it doesn't work well".
*Thinks* Well, s#*@, before the repair the hdd had more than 2000 damaged clusters, which prevented even the os to start
*Says* "Could you describe me the issue?"
[ basically he was saying that since he started using IE as a browser, he didn't have Google.com set as the first page and that he had to bing it]
"When did the 'issue' start, If I may ask?"
>"Two weeks ago. "
Two weeks ago.
Two f*""#ng weeks ago.
Set aside for the nature of the issue, you blame my four months ago repair for a two weeks ago issue?
"The computer was better before"?
THAT F###ING MACHINE WAS LIKE A BURNING HOUSE - I RESCUED DATA FOR 2 DAYS JUST BEFORE THE HDD STARTED TO CRANK AT EVERY SPIN - I REBUILT IT TO GIVE IT YOU BACK FULLY WORKING AFTER YOU USED AS A FOOTBALL, AND NOW YOU BLAME ME BECAUSE THE
BROWSER ISN'T SETTED AS YOU LIKE
No,seriously, is like I rebuilt a burned house from scrap and now the owner blames me because in the kitchen sink the hot water tap is on the right side instead of the left side.
So I visited my aunt's house a few days back.
They heard I write code (read: Google and copy-paste from Stack Overflow), and wanted me to help repair their computers.
Saw my cousin playing Battlefield 4 at sub-20 fps with a GTX 750 Ti on the lowest settings. His fucking CPU fan was bust, and judging by the amount of dust in his system, I literally thought he was cramming dust in there on purpose.
After a heavy dusting, another stick of RAM (4GB -> 12GB), a new heatsink (CoolerMaster T400i), and a fresh copy of Windows 10 (along with Office, etc.), he could play games at 60+ fps again.
What do I get? Not even a fucking thank you. Just a "you done yet? I want to play video games."
I mean... Gee. Your cousin flew all the way to a new continent, spent his precious vacation time helping you out, and all he gets is a cold-ass shoulder.
Even my fucking ex gave me more than that.18
So back story... I opened up my own company a while back. I provide not only general IT and phone repair etc but I also do ethical penetration testing and patch the holes.
Before opening my own business me and some buddy's went out to a bowling ally and bar to have a few drinks. I wanted to see what their network was like... I hacked into their entire network in less than two minutes. From my iPhone. I was in their switches, I was configuring their printers and fax machines. Lord knows what I could have done if I had my laptop.
Anyways, back to the rant... I got this text today. 😂😩🔫18
Me: Hey, my laptop (with stickers on it) is in for repair, can't get any work done.
Friend: Oh, that sucks, we going to be delayed launching our app!
... few days later ...
Friend: Hey, did u get it back yet?
Me: They ended up giving me a brand new one cause they couldn't repair it.
Friend: That's awesome man, you got lucky!
Me: F*@$ that, I LOST MY STICKERS!7
Wife: the neighbors brought their pc, it doesn't work.
Me: WTF did I say to you. I DON'T REPAIR ANYTHING NO PCS, PRINTERS, WASHMACHINES NOTHING TELL THEM TO GET THE FUCKING PC GODDAMIT ITS MY FREE DAY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.6
One of my colleague's monitor got damaged. While the service guys took the monitor for repair, she sat free. When the manager asked her to connect to a spare monitor and resume work, she asked how could she? As all her work was saved in previous monitor.6
Friend: "You are good with computers right?"
Friend: "Can you put an eye on my computer? Mint crash at every startup"
Me: (Oh Linux! For this time ok) "Yeah, show me"
My friend open the pc...
Pc: "KERNEL PAAAAANIC!"
Me: ".... WTF!?"
Friend: "Can you repair this?"
That was a long day...
(My friend closed the lid without the drivers and then the pc from the standby did not wake up correctly)6
Hooray for open source!
So my mother's Model M died. I didn't think that was possible but it looks like even the best ones have to die eventually.
I was one click away from ordering a replacement controller board for around the same price I had bought the keyboard for, when I duck-duck-went one last time for a service manual. Because maybe there was a error code table and maybe that flashing num lock light would tell me something about the defect. Then, I could investigate further and maybe repair the keyboard. I didn't find one.
What I did find was someone who made a USB controller board back in 2008, documented it well and published everything. It fit my Model M and I had all the parts at hand so I could fire up printer, etching bath, drill and soldering station and make that thing.
Now there's a working Model M on my table just because a guy named Ronald Schaten thought of future people having the same problem as he had.
Be like Ronald. How specific your issue might be, someone /will/ have the exact same one. Document and publish your solutions!8
// sorry, again a story not a rant
Category->type = 'Story';
Today at work I got a strange email
'about your msi laptop'
(Some background information, a few months ago I went on vacation and left my work laptop at home. Long story short some one broke in and stole my msi laptop)
So this email had my interest. I opened it and the content was something like:
Hi! My name is x, I clean/repair laptops partime and I noticed your personal information on this laptop, normally people whipe their data from their laptop before selling so this is just a double check, if the laptop was stolen please call me on xxx
If I hear nothing I'll assume its alright and will whipe your data
So of course I immediately called him, after a conversation I informed the police who is now working on the case7
I work at a small retail store and we have quite a few regular customers who know I'm studying computer science because I'm always coding at work on my laptop.
One lady who comes in quite often and is very sweet asked me if I would take a look at her phone. She said she bought it and paid the owner of a phone repair store to set it up for her, but was felt like he did something weird to it. I told her I wasn't an expert but would look at it.
Oh my god. This guy set up her phone connected to his own personal icloud account. All of his music was on there. All of his contacts were on there. All of his pictures were on there. Even nude pictures of multiple people that this lady said she definitely does not know. I tell her this is very very wrong and no one in their right mind should've set her phone up this way.
I automatically think to factory reset. I'm unfamiliar with iPhone, as the last time I used one was an iPhone4 many years ago. I was unaware that apple applies an authentication lock when the phone is reset.
The authentication is set up underneath yet ANOTHER email address that belongs to this guy, as this lady promised me she has no knowledge of any email address similar to the one listed, nor does she have access to it.
I tell her to call the guy and ask for her money back and to unlock her phone so that she can reset it herself.
He claims that he cannot accept refunds if a factory reset has been performed.
Uhm, I am calling SOOOOO much bullshit. There should be absolutely no reason why the owner of the phone cannot factory reset it. The owner should be able to do ANYTHING she wants with it, without being locked out of it because some creep at a repair store did NOT DO HIS JOB CORRECTLY AND HE KNOWS IT. Why else would he claim he can't refund if it's been reset, because he KNOWS she got locked out.
So long story short I talked on the phone with him and cussed him out telling him he was wrong for taking advantage of someone who doesn't know much about technology and that he was invading privacy and violating her security and that i would report him if he didn't fully refund her and unlock her phone.
He gave her all of her money back, unlocked the phone (which she is deciding to sell because she got so scared by this), and I'm still filing a complaint against this man and his store. Who knows how many more clueless people he did this too. Fucking scumbag.11
My dad finally lost all hope on me when I took my PC to the repair shop.
"Son, you're studying computer engineering"
"My apologies, papa"
What can I do ☹️ It wasn't booting at all.6
Dells XPS are made of magic. [long story, major fuckup, 10k+ damages]
It all started in December. One morning I was late to work, drove there as fast as possible. (I live like 3 minutes away so me being late really meant *late*) Parked my car in a secluded car park, grabbed my backpack and ran to work. The car park is like 100 meters away from work so I took my feet into my hands and ran. Next thing I know my heels loose all grip while I go down a small slope and I drop on my back full force. On a sharp edged stone. With only my 1700$ XPS in it. Fuck.
I paniced, but got up and ran to work. I checked on the notebook, praying it would boot. It booted! Holy shit. I flipped the notebook and saw two small dents in the aluminum shell. I was thorougly impressed. I later discovered that it left a small shadow on the display, but given what a hit that was (I am not exactly a lightweight), impressive would be a massive understatement.
Fast forward to February, I am weighing my options to get the screen replaced maybe, as damage on my hardware (even if neglectable) triggers some sort of OCD and makes me feel bad 24/7. Also my laptop tends to shut off from time to time, looked into the Event Viewer and saw kernel panic. I figured that the battery probably still took a hit and that it drops voltage from time to time and the kernel assumes a critical situation, thus shutting off.
It stayed quite snowy in Austria up until March, so occasional snowing wasn't rare. Got out of work one day, saw it snowed a bit. Whatever. I had my moms car at the time, so I tried if it would slide a bit if I donut on the now (5pm) empty parking space. Nothing. Drove done a small hill, ABS triangle lit up red (board computer can't outbalance the snow). I drove out to the main street where everything was salted and drove along towards my house. Took a turn into my street, accelerated for a bit and then went off the gas so the car would smoothly drive along with the speed slowly degrading. So I went off the gas and noticed I was a bit to the right, no wonder, centrifugal forces.
"Huh seems like I need a bit more"
*car still doesnt move much*
"What the- go to the left!"
*steers left hard*
"Fuck that wall is coming closer"
*car doesnt break*
"FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!"
Everything got quiet in seconds, me waking up to an open airbag, ripped pants, a hurting wrist, the radio somewhere on the ground and fumes that smellt like burning wires. I grabbed my backpack that was now somewhere on the floor instead of on the seat and ran outside, tears in my eyes and the phone on my ear calling my mom. I walked inside as she walked outside, hearing a weeping scream that I haven't heard from her since I am alive. While walking inside I noticed my backpack was wet on the bottom, my 2 litre water jug shattered when my backpack hit the dashboard. I tried to stay calm and act rational, knowing that every second counts when It comes to water damage. I hastely searched for some rice and a bag to put my laptop into, stuffed the bag with both and went outside. The car was totaled, my mom pissed and crying. And I was in shock, sad, angry and hurting.
I kept the laptop on my heater for a few days, bagged in rice. I dared to try a boot after a while and you wont believe me, it fucking booted. Even the keyboard backlight worked, just the screen was obviously broken in the back (no color distortion or bad pixel rows though!!) and the aluminum shell had a dent on the front. I talked with Dell Support a few days later, asking if it would be ok to open the XPS up so I could drain all of the water. She said yes thats fine, as long as I dont touch anything or screw around with it.
She said I can send it in and get it checked, but the pickup and analysis will cost 150$ and I can go from there.
I sent it in and estimated that, because battery, screen and other things probably needed changing, it will be around 900$.
Got a call a few weeks later:
"Hello beggarboy, the repair team reported back to us and said that they will have to replace everything, which will be 1700$."
"Fuck... Buying a new one is cheaper.."
"Yeah I know I am sorry about that, I can offer you a voucher so you can buy a new one for 250$ off if you would prefer that"
"Sorry but I will need some time to consider"
The agent clearly noticed I was bummed about it.
After going back and forth what to do I got another call a few days later.
"Hello beggarboy, we talked a few days ago. I have good news"
"Hello, yes, speak up?"
"I was able to get a special offer for you after putting in a few words..."
The next thing she said seemed unreal to me.
She was able to cut 600$ (!!!), making the new offer 1100$, instead of 1700$ or a new one for 1500$. I figured the reason she probably did that was because I am always very polite with support members. Always.
My XPS is back and healty again.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Dells XPS are made of magic.15
"Arch Linux is actually not that difficult".
I ssh'ed into my home server yesterday.
I was greeted by a message from an ext3 disk about needing fsck. Fine, "I haven't been in here for a while, might as well do some maintenance". fsck /dev/sda6, let's go!
This nicely "repaired" the sshd service (i.e. cleared the sectors), I cursed at myself for pressing enter at "repair (y)" right before the connection broke.
So I connected a display and keyboard... ok so let's just pacman -Sy sshd or whatever. We can do this! Just check the wiki, shouldn't be that hard!
Wait... pacman has not run since 2010? WAIT IT'S ACTUAL UPTIME IS 9 YEARS??? I guess we know why I'm a DB admin and not devops...
Hmm all the mirrors give timeouts? Oh. The i686 processor architecture isn't even supported anymore...?
4 hours, 11 glasses of cognac, 73 Arch32 wiki/forum pages, 2 attempts at compiling glibc, and 4 kernel panics later: "I think I'll buy a new server".22
My friend: My laptop is not working. Can you please fix it?
Me: Ok. I will take a look at it.
*After 1 hours*
Me: I think your hard disk has failed.
My friend: Can't you fix it? You always spend day and night on your computer. So, I think you can fix it.
Me: Sorry. I can't.
*Next day I went to his home*
His brother to my friend: You said he is a genious. He can fix anything related to computer. He can't do anything. I will take it to a best repair shop in the area.
Me: *walks out of his home*11
Apparently, because I know how computer works and how to program
I also had to know how to:
- become rich
- hack into banks
- solve all world problems
- make a better windows/facebook/apple/google
- repair a burned down PC
Sometimes I think they are scared that I'm able to zap them with a lightning strike as if would be a motherfucking wizard.
Still love my family though ;)3
Love this story about a dusty old original Commodore 64 that has been running for 25+years in a Poland auto repair shop. It runs a program to balance driveshafts.
1. I wish that people start taking back their device ownership. Right to repair is an extremely important thing. Like that Nexus 6P that I've recently repaired by jamming another battery into it, now it's at 110-ish% health according to AccuBattery. And it cost me.. €10 or so? All the while if I wasn't able to get in there, it would've been a €120 paperweight (and that's not even considering the €300-ish (? Someone please fill me in on that) price it retailed at back in 2015 when it was a flagship).
(edit the so many'th: according to https://express.co.uk/life-style/... the base model was apparently £449 at release, haven't been able to verify it though.. point is, a paperweight at such prices would've been quite a bummer, I mean for me it was even one given that it failed a mere few months after purchase for €120.. €40/m for a phone ain't nothing :/)
Right to repair is an extremely important thing, and the ability to do so shouldn't ever be impeded. Users should become able again to service the devices that they own.
2. I wish that people start caring about their privacy again. Google and Facebook and the likes are large companies, but at the end of the day, that's all they are. Large companies. And they're hungry for your data, not because they're selling it, rather because they're collecting it to an extent which they shouldn't. Over at DDG (https://spreadprivacy.com/duckduckg...) they explain a very much viable alternative revenue model pretty well. Additionally, there's several tools which you can use to limit the amount of data that's being collected about you. These include but are not limited to Firefox, NoScript, ad blockers (I personally use uBlock), a trustworthy VPN (ideally one of your own), and Tor.
3. I wish that software would become less inefficient. It really pains me to see that applications with functionality that could be implemented in a couple of MB at most come at a size of several hundreds of MB. 1% efficiency, even the inefficient as fuck tungsten light bulbs weren't that awful!!! Imagine what could be done with all the hardware we have available nowadays, if every piece of software would be around 80% efficient as is a common norm in electronics. Just looking at Linux which is still in many ways convoluted, modern desktops with a couple hundred MB of RAM usage? You've got it! So why can't OS's like Windows (although I have to say, huge improvements have been made there over the last few years) and browsers like Firefox and Chrome be more like that? I really don't understand.
There's several more wishes I have of course, but those are the most important ones.. hopefully I'll be able to see at least one of them come true during my life.12
Didn't want to post it as there's been already a lot of posts like this. But I just can't help myself to rant over this. This happened yesterday. I helped him earlier with his phone.
Friend of my dad: Hey, I need your help with my laptop I bought from eBay.
Me: *flashbacks of devRant posts*
Him: Everything works. It's just that nothing comes up in display.
Me: Okay, you need to take that to a repair shop. If at least something came up on screen I could help.
Him: Aren't you a computer engineer? I bought this because I knew you can fix it.
Me: *more flashbacks*
Him: You gotta help me with this. I can't lose money on this
Me: You didn't even ask me anything before buying. Ask your buyer if they have a 30 day return policy.
Him: Why are paying this much to study Computer Engineering? I'll talk to your dad.
This people man. I told my dad and he never received his call anymore7

- Power cut now, Can we watch tv on this thing(laptop) ?
Web dev is not a PC Repair guy ! This is so @notcool & Very frustrating.9
My family: Can you repair the printer ?
Me: No ...
My family: can't send my emails, fix it !
Me: No ...
My family: why this people can share my photos on Facebook ? Stop it now !
Me: Then stop sharing all your god damn life each time you eat, fart or go to the bathroom !!!! For fucks sake !
Also me: why have I started computer science ?2
Fuck all those shitdesigns that interface with their LCD using flat graphite cables!
USE FUCKING COPPER WIRES ALREADY!!! At least those things can take a small fucking tug of gravity during disassembly, unlike that micron-thick graphite junk which fractures even more easily than my goddamn toe did!!!
And as mentioned on Hackaday (https://hackaday.com/2012/09/...), repairing it is hell. How much does it cost to make a decent copper wire.. I can buy those things for like 20 cents from AliExpress, so don't tell me motherfuckturer that you can't. And these copper ribbon wires last on ya, AND can be repaired with a simple soldering job. Unlike this FUCKING GARBAGE!!!8
I vehemently despise the popular image of developers as borderline autistic savants living on junk food and working 24 hour days!
You see, I bought into that vision and became that person. When I first started working as a developer, I would work crazy long hours, eating junk food while neglecting my health and personal life. This behavior was encouraged by my boss and co-workers, and became expected, with the sales people boasting about it to the clients, like is somehow proved I was a better developer.
It's no big surprise that this kind of life comes at a cost and can not be sustained. I burnt out, my life fell to pieces and my body fucked out on me.
It's taken me years to repair the damage and I am still doing so.
I now work at a company that understands the importance of a healthy work/life balance, and I take full advantage of that.
Perhaps if I had a wise mentor when I first started, I could have worked smarter instead of harder and respected the needs of my mind and body.
I am that mentor now.
Developers are smart people, we should stop glamorising a stupid lifestyle.12
>Degree i think im getting: software engineering

Never gonna happen:
* Port our API to graphql. Or even make it just vaguely rest-compliant. Or even just vaguely consistent.
* Migrate from mysql to postgres. Or any sane database.
* Switch codebase from PHP to... well, anything else.
* Teach coworkers to not commit passwords, API keys, etc.
* Teach coworkers to write serious commit messages instead of emoji spam
* Get a silent work environment.
* Get my office to serve better snacks than fermented quinoa spinach bars and raw goat milk kale smoothies
* Find an open source IDE with good framework magic support. Jetbrains, I'll give you my left testicle if you join the light side of the force.
* Buy 2x3 equally sized displays. I'm using 6, but they're various sizes/resolutions.
* Master Rust.
* Finish building my house. I completely replaced the roof, but still have to dig out a cellar (to hide my dead coworkers).
* Repair/replace the foundation of my house (I think Rust is easier)
* Get slim and muscular.
* Get a comfortable salary increase, focus more on platform infrastructure, data design, coaching
* Get fat(ter). Eating, sitting, gaming, coding and sleeping are my hobbies after all.
* Save up for the inevitable mental breakdown-induced retirement.9
I went to see my mother a few days, and her TV's broken.
She told me to repair it, because "you're a programmer"
Does anybody knows a python function or a useful library that could repair TV ?7
I work in a computer repair shop. A COMPUTER repair shop. And every day, I get asked "Do you repair phone screens?" No. No, I do not. Stop asking!11
Just wow. I am amazed by what just happened.
A year ago my parents decided to switch from desktop to laptop for convenience. Knowing their needs, i bought them one without an OS and installed Ubuntu 16.04 on it. The thing is that if you do a regular maintenance of the laptop once a year at their partner company, you get additional 4 years of warranty (this offer is amazing).
So today was the day I brought the laptop for this maintenance for the first time. They make you a profile on their support website where you can track shit regarding your device, super convenient. First thing I notice that the login page was not https. Awkward, but there is no sensitive data here so i let it pass. Naturally i forgot my password, so I requested a new one and guess what? I recieved it in plaintext via mail. A tech repair oriented company does this, my god.
I went there, gave them the laptop in question and got a piece of paper, where they wrote that the laptop is in their hands now, and the current physical state of the laptop, and blabla.
I got home and I read what the guy wrote among other things: THE OPERATING SYSTEM IS NOT LEGAL.
How the fuck is Ubuntu not legal??? What the fuck is this shit? I sure as hell didn't torrent it or bought a booteged copy on the streets.12
TL;DR, employers are often penny wise and pound foolish.
One morning, my vehicle had a potentially life-threatening condition that I needed fixed before I could drive to work. I was 3 hours late but made a productive day of it. Plus I had stayed late after work, for no pay, a couple of nights because I have the kind of work ethic that compels me to do weird stuff like that occasionally.
When the time clock report came out it showed I was 3 hours short for the pay period. I brought up that I had "paid it forward" a few weeks prior and asked for an exception based on that. I was told that a) all "extra" work had to have been approved prior to doing it and b) that pay period had already passed, so no, I'd need to make up the hours. Being pretty miffed at being so nickled-and-dimed, and for being expected to drive to work in spite of the possibility of losing my life, I just had them take it out of my time off.
Fast forward to my latest monthly review: After another potentially life-threatening vehicle breakdown and fix, I decided to ask whether I could have a couple of telecommute days per week to offset fuel and mileage to recover the repair cost for the wear and tear on my vehicle. The answer was "No, because then everyone will want to work from home and then we'd have no way to know if they're really working."
On that same day I got an offer for doing the same job at another company for 100% telecommute and at nearly twice the salary. I turned in my resignation two days later. Now they're scrambling to try to replace me.2
Disclaimer: I have a strong hate towards apple for multiple reasons and this will only be temporary. (thank God for that)
My oneplus one is battery dead and the power button quit as well. Repair costs would be as expensive as buying a new phone (200-300 price range) so searching for a new one.
But, I need a temporary phone in the mean time.
A phone with googled-android is absolutely a no-go. I used to do that sometimes but those were wrong decisions.
So, for the sake of trying, I'm going for a second hand iPhone.
Will be testing how it works for me (never been able to form an opinion on it since iOS 4.2 (iPod touch)) and will also be searching my ass off for a smartphone which supports lineage/rooting (TIPS BETWEEN ABOVES PRICE RANGE ARE VERY WELCOME) because I'm fucking hell not planning on using that (the iPhone) fucker any longer than a month.
Even if I love it over android (highly doubt that), I won't continue using it for very specific reasons.
Wish me luck 😅16
"Unless it's the big red button with launch codes, there are no buttons you can press that I can't unpress"
Translation: you have to TRY to mess up so bad it's beyond repair.4
Happened half a year ago (parents both use Linux although they're very a-techie).
*Dads laptop comes back from store after a repair*
Dad: (on the phone) hello son, could you help me out? they put some weird stuff on my laptop at the repair centre...
Me: Weird stuff? like what?
Dad: It's a virus I think
Me: A virus??
Dad: Definitely a virus!
Me: And what is this virus called?
Dad: Windows 10!
Me: Oh yes coming over asap to get that removed!
I put elementary OS on it again when i went to visit my parents.17
Client: Hey. So. LOVE your work. Got my computer repaired at your place a few weeks ago. And you guys did a GREAT job. But noooooow...my phone is acting up. Can you fix it?
Me: Why yes! We can! It will be ________! Keep in mind, the price includes all labor and comes with a three month warranty!
Client: But you said the last time I was there I had a warranty. Why isn't my phone covered under warranty?
Me: because the warranty only covers your computer issue that we fixed.
Client: BUT YOU SAID I HAD A WARRANTY!!!!!
It was at that moment I wanted nothing more than to sink into the wall behind me and wash my hands of this insanity.5
Gets run over by truck. Laptop in peaces. Insurrance needed to be sure it was actually broken. Sends laptop to a repair center. They tell me its broken. Repair center asks if I want my laptop back. I said: yes pls. Get laptop back. RAM stolen SSD stolen. Reee! They forgot to send it back..... I mean, you did not have to take out those parts to see it i broken.12
TLDR: First dinner with whole family, already 3 smartphones to "repair".
They buy cheap phones with just 8 GB of storage and then ask me to solve their issues with "insufficient space on the device" without removing pictures and videos because of course they are not aware of concepts like pc/cloud backup or using SD card as main saving location.
At least these phones are full of bloatware so I can easily disable something to gain enough storage to get rid of the notification (tricking them into believing that I solved all of their problems) while I set SD card as default and enlighten them about the wonders of Google Photo and its auto-clean function.
I'd really like to ignore them, but unfortunately that's the only kind of relationship I have with my relatives, I know that sucks but at least is something.
And I actually prefer to spend some minutes on someone else's phone than talk about politics or try to explain what exactly is my job and what I am studying 🙄6
Heading out to see family tomorrow. My Christmas wish this year is for my dad to not ask me to repair his computer.
I have a Ubuntu thumb-drive to solve all his troubles anyways. :D
Happy Holidays everybody.5
Recently I got into contact with the supplier of that 500W power supply that I've been servicing earlier, as I lost my pictures of the disassembly process with that craptacular Nexus 6P (didn't back them up.. terrible sysadmin, am I not?) and wanted to get the circuit diagrams of this thing in order to repair it. Sales girl wanted to give it to me but she'd have to ask the factory people.. and of course those people denied. As if I wanted to use this for anything but to repair my own bloody unit.. pieces of shit.
So I started considering buying a second one, in order to repair my current supply that I've already spent half a week on to document its components, desolder it, clean it up and resolder it (and replace some resistors here and there with better ones from my own assortment). And the project had to be paused because I lost the stupid pictures and couldn't for the love of God figure out how there's supposed to be a jumper near BD2.
Just now going through my notifs..
"Someone ++'d your rant!"
A rant that I completely forgot about.. https://devrant.com/rants/1757297. It's a perfect picture of the supposed jumper near BD2 that I was scratching my head about for so long. Turns out that it's just a dupe of the LF2 lines that I erroneously wrote down twice. DevRant, it's good for more than just venting, haha! Time to restore from a cloud backup XD5
I've been tasked to do website debugging.
For Internet Explorer 11.
On a Mac.
I have to use a virtual machine to get Windows on a mac just so I can test on internet explorer.
This mac is not fast.
This virtual machine is even less fast.
The internet explorer on this virtual machine on this mac is the least fast.
Even worse, this website is a pile of garbage. It's slower than my grandma.
My grandma is dead.
You can't get any slower than that, so I thought.
But then I got introduced to the result of making a wordpress site with over 300 pieces of media and 20 plugins.
If you are one of the people that's smart enough to stay away from wordpress: I assure you that it fucks your site up beyond repair.
So anyway, how was your day?4
I *hate* how being a hacker nowadays gets you so much bad cred. I do things like exploits against embedded devices to be able to understand them and repair them, physical hacks to repair a broken device (like cutting a notch in something to make a replacement part fit), and things like that. Being a hacker does NOT mean I'm part of some government takeover bullsh*t set out to hack the pentagon or rig the election. It also does NOT include mindless banging on a keyboard. And no, I cannot hack someone's facebook for you, track someone's device, etc. Just..no.13
Well, i have a few stories i would like to share with you :)
My neighbour asked me to fix her webcam.
I told her: But I am a programmer, not a repair service .
Next time my neighbour forgot her Skype password. Se asked me to hack it for her.
I told her: But I am a programmer, not a hacker.
My sister asked me to help her out in her program, because of some bug. Well, she is in the other part of the Country. But, i said, lets give it a try.
Well, it turned out to be some kind of mechanical remote scanner, with needed that exact same remote locally.
I told her: But I am a programmer, not a fictional remote signal scanner repairer.
My grandpa asked me, to copy his old gmail emails into his new laptop.
Well, i told him to log in. He logged in. Than i told him: It is done :D
Thanks for reading it :)5

From now on I am telling everybody I work as a baker. No one will ask me how an oven works, or to repair their croissant.3
If i have to repair one more lenovo laptop, imma pull up to their hq and punch all them in the dick.6
Fuck stripped screws. A big FUCK to all those manufacturers using fucking cheap screws. Fuck them all.
Now, I am stuck here. Don't have the equipment to remove this motherfucker.17
1 - Please hack his/her facebook account for me.
2 - (at home) I used to block wifi access by mac filtering and if there's legit server down and wifi isn't working, everyone blames me.
(I am freelancer and mostly work from home)
3 - almost all of my relatives think I don't work.
4 - I am first choice for everyone's phone, PC and hardware repair.
This one is classic
GET A REAL JOB, you need to go out in the field for work.5
Just came back from a new café (to the pedantic among us, yes I know it's a bar.. get over it).
And I met some Apple fanboy 🤭
So the guy kept on bragging about his shiny iPhone 6.. and I figured that I'd chime in. Due to my short-term memory being terrible, I'll be paraphrasing here.
S: iPhone usar _/\_
M: iPhone 6 ey..? I've heard about some devices in which the old ones are throttled down in a system update "to save the battery".
S: Yes, biweekly updates!! You can even delay them to tune them down to the time during which your device is charging and can commence its system update.
M (thinking): You've clearly missed the point sir.. but on Android, system updates don't need to be willfully delayed even. They (usually) won't commence unless your device is 80% and charging. OnePlus has been an exception to this though, probably under the assumption that their users are mostly power users that know what they're doing.
M: You do realize that given that your iPhone 6 is quite old already, Apple will very likely start throttling your device during a system update in the next few months, right.
S: What the hell dude.. look, look how smoothly it's been going for the last few years!!! Nothing wrong with that.
M: Just wait until your repair bill comes from those Geniuses 🤭
M: Sir, you do realize that Apple quotes €600 for battery repairs nowadays, right.
S: What the hell dude!!! I can buy a whole new phone for that much!!
M: Exactly!! That's exactly Apple's business tactic!!! They design their phones as such that the battery replacement (one of the most common repairs) requires you to replace not only the battery, but the whole chassis!!! And on the XS, the battery replacement is nothing short of atrocious!!!
M: Here, have a look at this: https://youtube.com/watch/...
*shows Louis' newest video about him switching to iPhone XS*
S: Yeah that's just bullshit. I bet you're showing me this on one of those crappy Samsungs.
M: No sir. I'm showing this on my Nexus 6P, that is tethered to my OnePlus 6T. Speaking of which, let me introduce you to the Nexus 6P's (one of the crappiest Android flagships to ever exist) repair, the battery replacement of which I've done myself.
(you can watch the iFixit video about it here: https://youtube.com/watch/...)
*explains heatgun, screwdriver, heatgun battery replacement of Nexus 6P and the time each step takes - more than an hour combined*
S: Yeah that's because it's one of those crappy Androids. That'd never happen to this shiny iPhone, look, I've got a $20 battery right here!!!
M: Sir... That's a battery for a MacBook. A laptop battery.... 🤨
I love how willfully ignorant these Apple users are. To them, all that exists is Apple and Samsung (both of which I hate because lockdown). And they apparently don't even know what repair they have to look for when they'll need one.. maybe that's why those Genius Bars exist? 🤭
I'd love to see the guy's face when the Geniuses quote him the price for battery replacement when his planned obsolescence time comes 🤭14
Sorry, but I gotta go with the inevitable. Apple.
Of course, their older slogan is ironic now. Used to be does more, costs less. Now you can't even upgrade the RAM in most devices and legally can't repair their shit without their permission. The only reason people love Apple is because of the ecosystem. Everything Apple works great with everything else Apple, plus it's very trendy to have that logo plastered everywhere. It's too convenient to leave.11
last week was the funniest week in my damn life.
so apparently, some of friend knew about i can make some mobile applications, lets just call her riri. and that week, riri's Instagram account got hacked.
whats so funny about it? she ask me to get her account back or she'll accuse me as the one who hacked her account.
when i ask her, how could i bring her account back, she replied with, "why would you ask me? you were the one who good at computer thingy"
if i can drive a car, you'll assuming that i can make a car and repair it myself?
When I started studying CS, my dad was very upset. He told me he couldn't undersand why was I studying that if the only thing I could do afterwards was to open a computer repair shop and charge people to install antivirus and word. He's not saying shit now when I earn more than he has ever had and lend him money knowing he cannot repay me.6
Fuck this shit. Laptop in repair. Using old PC.
Overclocking GPU right now
Overclocked Monitor to 75Hz.
Fucking hell If this doesnt break it then this is fucking glorious.29
Just when you are done working and want to relax so you start the pc, and this shows. Tableflip. 😒9
Today at work was a Tower pc, the customer said it always turned off really fast, but now nothing is happening
I tearde the fan appart
But have a look6
I'm sick of this stupid tech world.
Don't get me wrong, I love tech. I just can't stand anymore the global brainwashing that we're part of.
Think about all the huge companies making profit on our data. For a better service, yeah sure, but do we really understand what the cost is?
Ok sure, you don't care about your data because you trust these companies and the advantages are all worth it. What about the fact that we are all forced to buy the next new smartphone after 2 years?
Like if removable batteries were a problem for us, users. Or like the audio jack. Because now someone decided that the pricey wireless headphones are Just What You Need™.
Do you think you own your smartphone?
No, you don't. You are paying a bunch of money for something that soon will be just a useless brick of glass and metal which you can't repair. But you'll be happy anyway.
Someone is so happy to the point that they will defend their favorite company, doesn't matter how they decided to stick it into their ass.
Open your eyes, you've been brainwashed.25
I hate being a fucking tech support dude. Everyone thinks it is my job to fix their device. Some girl asked me to replace her iPhone 6 plus screen a few days ago. I reluctantly said yes. I bought a screen. And I started the process. I opened the box for the new screen and it was just the screen with no digitizer. That was completely my fault. I was an idiot. I immediately buy the correct one on amazon and tell the girl, I'm sorry you won't have a phone for two days. As soon as the new package comes in, I will do the repair.
3 Days Later: Today.
Her: Has it come in yet?
Me: No, I'm going to call Amazon
Amazon: We're sorry, the thing you asked for was out of stock, you'll have to buy it again.
He was very nice, and he gave me free shipping, but this was not my fault!
Her: I have to wait 2 more days? That's like a whole week without a phone!
I had to do this for free and pay $40 for the new part. I am never telling anyone I am a developer again. I feel so fucking bad, and she's mad. And I can't do anything about it.6
It happened me a few years ago. I live in the Netherlands, but I am Hungarian. My new "friends" asked me to fix their laptop. I did it for free. It turns out, it was a huge mistake. In the next half a year I've solved several issues to them and to their family members (I don't get it, how they can ruin a well working hardware and software that fast, but it is another story). It takes a lot from my free time at the end. Then I had enough and ask some money to fix the next laptop. The price wasn't high, a bit more than a half of the repair shop's price. They tried to press me to do it for free, cos "you are our friend and you are hungarian too, we have to help each other out". I said no. It is too much. I've never seen them again...9
Customer puts laptop on counter and turns it on. It's not plugged in.
Customer: "So, do these things have batteries in them?"4
Customer: Do you need my computer password?
Me: Yes, I do. Why don't you write it down for me? *fills out work order form while she writes down her password*
Customer: Here you go *slides me sticky note with password on it*
Me: *usual spiel about computer repair stuff*
Me: *to Coworker* So this lady's password is "AmishForLife* (modified for security purposes).
Coworker: On her iPad?!
Me: And her computer, yes
Me: I wonder how well that's working out for her...
Lappy is back. The repair shop switched my back panel too.
All my stickers are fucking gone.
ACER if you are listening by any chance. This is fucking RUDEEEEEEEEEEE.
You made Haxk20 angry but i forgive you since lappy is working.8
'Twas a fun day today...
Construction workers cut into the fiber line to a medium sized company this morning. We got the splicer guy on site quickly, but it is going to take a while, because the whole cable needs to be extended a bit in order to repair it. We got the company online through a LTE modem for the repair duration. Oh and also had to set up VPN on all PCs to connect to their server in our datacenter. A fun day indeed.10
This morning there was this window cleaner again, that actually made me remember a rant from the old box - my previous account. Repost of that coming in an hour or so :3
Turns out that he came in the morning, and I completely forgot about it. The only appointment that I had today got canceled so I was like, eh fuck it. There's been this family event yesterday that made me so fucking tired... I'll just stay in bed for a little while longer.
Apparently that window cleaner ringed my bell multiple times, haven't heard him do it but anyway.. he and the cleaning lady had the genius idea to ask my landlord whether they can just barge in my home. Way to start the day, isn't it? I thought there were burglars.
In my bathrobe and visibly pissed off (I am NOT a morning person!), I let him do the window cleaning and waited for them to get the fuck out already. Then that cleaning lady, the fucking bitch that called my landlord to break into my home without MY prior permission!!! While the window cleaner was doing his work, she proceeds to ask me this.
Cleaning lady: "I had this technical issue earlier, and since you are good with phones I thought I'd ask you."
Me (thinking): oh, here it comes.. *rolling eyes*
M: "What's the issue?"
CL: "Well my stepson has an iPhone, which he broke and we brought it to a smartphone repair shop. They repaired it twice but an hour after receipt of the fixed phone, it breaks again."
M (t): You went wrong at iPhone, and you went wrong at visiting that incompetent mofo "teknishan" twice.
M: "Well I have no experience whatsoever with iPhones, but continue."
CL: "Well, he replaced the motherboard, and some pin at the bottom.."
M (t): The fucking motherboard of all things. The whole fucking motherboard?! The last thing that I'd look at, he just replaces like that?! Fucking piece of shit. That's even worse than Apple stores. And what's up with that goddamn pin? CAN'T YOU POSSIBLY BE A BIT MORE SPECIFIC?!
M: "Given only this information, I have no idea what's wrong with it."
CL: "But you are good with these things, aren't you?!"
M: "I disassemble my own broken phones, and dick around with their motherboards. That, while I'm fully aware that in the process I can break it beyond repair. That does not make me an expert on every phone out there."
Well what did you even expect, fucking bitch. You barge into my home, don't even have the dignity to leave for me to be able to shower and dress myself, and then you go ask shit like that? Go suck my fucking cock, and shove that iPaperweight down your ass!! How about that?!9
Working for a company that does PC repair I see allot of computers. But this one model of Dell seems like it will never stop haunting my dreams. Windows XP and all12
"The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair. " - Douglas Adams1
Shittttt today i got PC to repair and it have 64MB of ram fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk its impossible to repair this crap because it too old buy new one11
My uncle: „You are good with computers, right? My Word is broken, repair that.“
Yeah sure, let me just call my bros at Microsoft and repair your Word with them 🤨
Ok Now I am getting fed up of
"I am programmer , someone gave me printer/mobile/tv to repair" jokes/rants/memes.
Once or twice is fine. Now they are just reposts with slightly different content. Not funny anymore. Just irritating.
Why do people have to follow a trend here. Have some ingenuity guys.9
FUCK THSI SHIT 😤😤😤😤
I've just destroyed my home partition, then in an attempt to repair it destroyed everything else... And now my systems (dualboot) won't even start anymore 😤😤😤😤😤
Don't try to resize luks partitions like you would do with normal partitions kids.4
Soo I am the only tech-guy in my family and it's a bit like:
Other: You do program?
Other: pls repair my printer!
And you guys know how awful that is, aren't you? But in my family it gets tougher...
Today my older sister asked me how to save data from a broken HDD. I said I know a guy who's doing forensic on HDDs and he could make that.
She's like: "but a friend of mine said it could be done easier with software"
And yes, it is! But not that successful...
Now's the point she killed me instantly!
She said: "he opened the HDD and said the disks look fine they could be easily added to a new HDD"....
WHAT THE ACUTAL FUCK I SAID NOW YOUR DRIVE IS BROKEN FOREVER! AND THEN SHE INSULTED ME AND BLOCKED ME ON FUCKING WHATSAPP! SHE IS LEARNING WEBDESIGN WHY THE FUCK DON'T TEACH HER THE BASICS OF FUCKING COMPUTERS! Oh for fuck sakes....5
I would like a formal ban on heavy smokers using computers.
For the sake of us repair people, take care of your damn hardware!10
I realized why do i like java the most. Error messages are easy to read and consistent. Never really had to look up an error because the message tells you exactly what is wrong. Hell, you could write a script to self-repair the errors because they are so obvious to fix.
Now compare that to my current stack, python and js....8
How. The. Fuck...do these people has a job:
Me: How much to repair my Nexus 6 screen? It's not full smashed.
Tech guy: We'll need to see the phone
Me: Why? I need the screen replaced
Tech guy: Ok...send us a screen shot. it could be a cheap fix
Fucking me side ways! Really?1
Heights of laziness.
My dad's laptop having "WINDOWS OS" got full of viruses and my dad wanted me to repair it since I visited my home.
But I insisted him to get it repaired at some IT shop. Went to an IT shop, my dad introduced the shopkeeper that I am his son and is a software engineer. That moment, I really felt bad that even I could have done formatting and installing applications back.
Now, let's hope it comes back full healthy and clean.19
My dad is an old-timer and he just recently started using the computer to browse the Internet. He calls me in because the browser froze (Microsoft Edge for the win) but he initially thought that he had broken something on the computer so he grabs his mechanic tools and a flashlight to see if he could repair it. I had a good chuckle.3
How i managed to change the admin password from school's computer (which ran Windows 7)
Well, back in the days in highschool, i was really bored by what teachers taught us and i always loved to hack things whenever i got acces to. This happened one year ago, when i was in my senior year in high-school.
Each Tuesday, at the end of the schedule, we got no classroom left so for a whole year, we had to move into a class which literally had a ton of computers (that actually worked, despite my expectations)
All of the PCs were an i3-i5, not-so-fancy, with a 1080i displays and Windows 7, *cough* while our Computer Science classrooms had ~Intel Celeron~ and ~Windows Vista~. Cool, huh?
All of them were password protected, and i didn't get access to the password from Administrator.
In my experience, each time i was in the login screen in Windows, if i pressed too many times Left Shift, it led to a warning. After digging for some search, i learnt that that warning was shown by a hc.exe file in the C:/Windows/... (and some random path; it's been a year since i worked with this; since then, i ran Linux all the way, haha). So this made me think i could trigger some action, which i'm gonna describe later in the story.
So i had a smart hack: if i don't know the password, i'm gonna reset it. Restarting the PC too many times, and pressing the restart button right before the boot screen loads up. Repeating this, led to a nice Blue screen which opened to Startup Repair. So i clicked Startup Repair, obviously, the PC didn't have any problems that Startup Repair could detect, so each time it gave a nice clickable path to a file which contained a ton of logs about the Recovery itself. Click it opened Notepad with ADMINISTATOR RIGHTS.
Holy f***. I clicked File > Open, then i browsed through the C:/ disk while the name of the window said: "Administrator: ..." (i was really sure i have administrator rights)
FINE! What next? Remember that hc.exe file? I made a copy of it, "hc - Copy.exe" (meh), deleted hc.exe, then i copied cmd.exe and renamed it to hc.exe. Clever?
Rebooting, hoping this would work...
Log in screen shown. I have pressed Left Shift so fast and in the end... CMD OPENED! WITH ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS.
Holy f*** x2.
I fast-googled how to change a password in CMD, and i found out that i can do that using "net user" to list the accounts, and "net user [account name] *" to change the password.
"Type a password for the user: " prompted, changed the password, could log in as Administrator.
And all of this, just so i could install a LAMPP, a code editor and make a clone of my projects to work there because i was really bored by what the teachers taught me in high-school.
Funny note: A few weeks later i have found out the password have been changed again, so i repeated the process and everything run smoothly. I kinda' don't know how they didn't manage to find out who did this. But it was worth it, i could work on my projects while at school. Haha.4
Get a call from a customer asking if I can come check out her “printer”. Okay...
Get there and it’s not just a printer but an embroidery machine - never worked on them in my life and I’m not embarrassed to admit that.
I express that to her but tell her that I’ll definitely check it out and I get the reply - “you own a repair shop and have never worked on one of these, I don’t feel comfortable with you working on it.” - even though she had tried “fixing it” and completely fucked up the application and printer moreso than when it had originally stopped working.
Alright, bitch... I’m sorry that I haven’t worked on every fucking embroidery machine that’s ever been made. I apologize that I’m not familiar with your fucking machine, but if you would give me some time I assure you I can resolve your fucking problem; I imagine it’s (l)user error anyway. But no, you go ahead and send it off to the company that made it with a minimal charge of XXX$ and let them resolve your problem.
Yes, I run a computer/printer/phone repair shop, but that doesn’t automatically mean that I specialize in your FUCKING problem, but I can assure you I’d handle it.
Her - “You’re going to charge me when you didn’t even work on it?!”
Me - “I’m sorry, but I drove out here expecting to work, you declined the work; but there’s still a charge for having me come out here. Yes, you will be getting a bill. If you’d like me to work on it and help you resolve the problem, I’d be more than happy to.”
Her - *rolls eyes*
Ah! The sense of achievement you get, the feeling of accomplishment you feel, the beautiful red light that glows up on board, when you repair your home's broken wiring.
I fucking ❤ hardware. Best WYSIWYG of all.7
So my mom says her printer isn't working anymore. I sit and battle with drivers and mysteriously missing virtual usb ports for two hours, give up, we decide to buy a new printer.
Next day she says her scanner isn't working either.
It's only then that I notice her USB hub cable is unplugged.. aargh.
Today, someone asked me to recover the lost data from his phone that he just factory reset with no backup.
Fuck no. I said this many times. I AM NOT A TECH SUPPORT!!
So I said no.
Then he asked me if he the people from the repair shop are able to recover the data.
How the fuck do I know?
I blocked him.1
I learned recently that you can inject SQL lines in some fields like Passwords or usernames on some websites. (Hacky hacky)
At work there is this intra website that is used to manage the parts of the radios and computers we repair.
Each piece has a specific number, and there is a tree with every pieces for each radio/computer.
When we get to repair one, we gotta change the pieces virtualy on the website. Sadly sometimes, the virtual pieces aren't marked like they followed the whole Radio from the place they come to the place we repair (we need it to replace the piece). People are just not doing their job, so we have to send emails and call for them do it so we can repair it. (This is already fucked up.)
Today, I had to replace a piece, but it was marked like it's not there. I called the guy, and it seems like he is on a vacation for weeks. My superior was super annoyed due to the urge of this task.
Guess who managed to change the _mainlocation_ of the _piece_ in the _radiopieces_ table. (Not actual names, you malicious cunt)
I spent 3 hours looking for the name of the fields and table. I don't know how many times I had to refresh the dam page to see I failed once again.
Hopefully I didn't have to guess all of them. Also the joy when I realised I succeed !!!
No one bats a eyes, and I'm here, feeling infinitely superior, as I might get punished for wanting to do my job.
I know it's basic moves to some of you, but dam it felt good.
Conclusion: Do what you have to, specially when it takes 5 minutes and people need it.14
Making electronics more difficult to repair with security fasteners and ultrasonically welded plastic nightmares and what have you.. what's the point? The argument from manufacturers is that "users don't want to get in there anyway". But, it's not like even if they could, they'd want to, right? Which type of person that doesn't know electronics very well and has an interest in repairing it would go and look at a board, and say "this is how it works, this and that is broken and this is how it should be repaired"? Not many users can repair their own devices regardless. So why? To preserve IP? Not like the Chinese bootleggers care about that. To preserve sales? Users can't repair their stuff anyway. To keep those who want to peek inside out, just for the hell of it? Anyone determined enough will be willing to break it in the process anyway.7
Oh for fucks sake on a horse raping twat of a week.
It’s like everything that could go wrong did go wrong, from people fucking up, to orders being fucked up in multiple systems to me wanting to break someone’s fucking nose for being a complete dumb fuck. Seriously how do people that do a job, day in and day out go completely fucking brain dead and fuck things up beyond fucking repair over hundreds of orders.
Sorry but FUCK this shit, it can wait till fucking Monday you cunt rash of a shit.
I can repair an electronic item, write code and debug. Has a degree in CS so why do I have to ask the wife "baby, how do you operate the washing machine?"5
When your payload has persistence and cant be detected by known anti viruses and your prof. gave you his laptop to repair but you're fighting to do the right thing.4
For the first time in my life windows 10 repair fixed the PC?
Was getting bluscreen regarding unmountable boot, memory management then try to open it now it started diagnosing your PC.
Started reading devrant it fixed the problem and it works now.5
Hmmmm. Laptop in repair. Hinge broke. Well now im on old PC.
BIOS showed 1066Mhz RAM.
Its 1333Mhz RAM FFS.
Sets it to 1666Mhz by accident.
Didnt notice it and did all the usual stuff i do on PC.
After 6 hours i notice it. RAM runs cool.
Well overclocked fucking RAM and its stable. Nothing to complain about.
Lets overclock CPU now. 3Ghz dual core just isnt gonna cut it. AMD athlon II X2 250.
And yes this is Haxk20 for those wondering.14
You stupid lousy price of potato shit windows, yes that’s right - this pissed of windows user is pissed the fuck right off.
Here I am letting you sit there idling along and then I press the start button, you know that fucking button I press regularly for fucking years, only for you to go “fuck you, I’m going to blue screen instead” like what the flying fuck? There hasn’t been any updates in a while that I’ve noticed but this shit is just a shit.
So what ever, let’s reboot this mother fucker, oh wait now you can’t fucking boot, I can hear the hdd spinning a million miles an hour (coz non ssd) but noooo your just going to sit there like a dumb ass prick who doesn’t know what the fuck your doing.
So fine, let’s pull out that old USB with w10 on it and do a MBR repair... (coz nothing else will fucking work in your shit list of options) ok so apparently an MBR repair gets you booting.. but wait there’s more, now you useless piece of shit are going to run a scan disk which has sat at 0% for the past 20 minutes and I don’t think I’m ever going to see that fucker move, I get it you want to do something useful, but Fucking Do it already!
Like wtf, how does a stable system just decide to shit itself.
Oh and before you say it.. no I can’t install Linux on this piece of shit, see my previous rants for that problem.6
Setting server up and friend installed it on btrfs partition.
After 1 week power turned off few times and super block broke.
I was saying to him that if that happens call me !
Well he didn't and tried to repair it him self after 2 hours he deleted entire drive with all data (no backup I was going to set it up that day) well when he told me I was about to punch him.but then he realized that he had a copy of the drive. So I said to copy the data to the old one but format it as ext4 well after that.
Drive broke and well we said that actually nothing import was at the NAS server so we turned it off.
(It was a home NAS server build just for fun)38
Windows 10 - suspiciously free upgrade and "pirate friendly."
Microsoft - really rolling with the hardware scene lately.
Windows 10 Updates - suspiciously destroyed the hardware in 4 laptops and a desktop I've worked on putting the owners in the market for new Microsoft hardware.
When you screw up the Python indentation beyond repair, and you have to re-indent 100s of lines of code -_-15
Php code without any class. Every page is a separate php file in project root folder.
Everything is all over the place, code repetition is everywhere.
The worst part? No security. The sql calls are with mysql_ functions and string concatenation. Files are just uploaded without checking.
And I had to repair it.2
So I was watching this movie "The Foreigner" and suddenly I noticed this scene. "Preparing Automatic Repair" 😂 Leave Real World, It Can't Even Function Properly In Reel World.
My godmother asked me to repair her PC... so when opening the case i realized that her "shady"(improvised wires) case fan was not working... so i tried to connect its molex wire to the psu, and realized i neded an wire adaptor because the psu could not support that fan(only had one molex, female, not male and female), but I gave it a try... long story short... I SHORT-CIRCUITED THE PC...(but it restarted after 10 minutes of me dying of fear that i destroyed her pc...)6
So yeah today lappy was supposed to come back from repair. Yeah didn't happen as I'm writing this.
Service told me that laptop has been shipped to the shop last Tuesday. That's week ago and the shop still doesn't fucking have it !
When looking at service status it says it has been shipped indeed. Shop says its still in service. Well I trust the service cause the shop oh well. So I will call to the shop today and make a mess there I guess since 1 week is too long for courier transfer.
So a good reminder from this is: go to service and get it repaired there and fuck the shop since it takes loooooooong time.1
Wanted to play a new game this WE.
It's quite demanding so decide to boot into Windows, because NVIDIA driver support.
Haven't booted Windows 10 in a month so I start early in the morning to do the updates.
After about 3 hours all Windows and steam updates were installed and I finally start the game.
I play for a couple of hours until suddenly - blue screen
I rebooted and was faced with another blue screen right after the Windows logo. Didn't even reach the login screen.
So here I am with a Windows install that is stuck in a boot - blue screen - boot - system repair - blue screen loop and a shitty gaming WE.
So my grandma just called me saying that there is something wrong with the computer and the UPS is making a weird noise. When I went to find out what's going on, the UPS was beeping constantly and the computer was in the middle of a startup repair. Obviously there is no way to cancel the repair, and unplugging the UPS would probably do more harm to the computer. So we had to listen to that constant, loud, high-pitch noise while waiting for the startup repair to complete. And mind you, I'm talking about a very old and slow computer with windows 7 on it. After the repair was done, I quickly turned off the computer so I can reset the UPS and save my eardrums from burning in hell.
The worst thing is that I've downloaded the documentation of the UPS, and there was no mention of what a constant beeping means, it only described the meanings of normal beeping patterns (battery low, etc...).
My eyes are still ringing and my ears are still blurry from 20 minutes of that noise.4
Niiiiceeee. Just in case my laptop warranty won't pass for whatever reason but it should be OK. But if they don't repair it I found the hinges on eBay. They are 25$ ffs. That's cheap AF. Well but still better if they repair it. It will be free that way.
But that's just in case.7
My non dev friend called me in middle of night for getting shortcut virus removed! I would have blasted 🔫 him but I felt pity on the guy as I know that he is poor with tech stuff
Any he had only windows, so I Google up solution and replied back to him.
He asked where to put it. I told him in cmd. He is like what so I told him to press win+r then in that type d and "black" 🏴 window will appear. Type in that.
guess what he typed exactly as mentioned in the reply and didn't replace the drive name properly .😑
I told him to put proper drive and saw that he missed spaces so l told him that he missed space 😤 and he put only one space and it still had problem so I had to explain it in weirdest was possible( shown in fig 1.1 had been writing report and figure gave yo be mentioned with number 😅)
Finally. It was all done! Well some pf my cs ( !counter strike but computer science friend) are worse then this can't use teminal or even connect to WiFi (wpa-enterprise @ college with mschap v2 and peap auth which is crackable using twin tower and brute force) properly, do I guess it not BA's that this guy cry to get rid of shortcut virus (virus > wifi setup) 😬
Finally I feel relived after ranting 😪5
So, my last post was about dual booting to Linux. I haven't had problems with Windows. However, after an apart partial update to the Creaters version, I can't open anything without an error that says "ceip.exe was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)." I can't even run command prompt.
I have nothing on my PC that I can't replace (everything is backed up in at least two places) other than the programs I need for work. I can get them on Monday. But I'm on call the rest of today and tomorrow. And i need them because they help me test system health.
Trying to run the update again to see if I can repair it that way, otherwise, any suggestions for a temporary fix? Thinking my switch to Linux is sooner than I thought, but I have to be able to work.6
Almost all my family think I'm free tech support.
My dad knows what I do and he's proud because I finished uni (he didn't), he sometimes asks for help (he repairs electronic stuff) and I try as hard as possible to be useful (it's fun!). He knows that (most of the time) I'm working when I'm in my laptop, so he doesn't bother me, he kindly asks if he needs help with something.
My brother's studying the same I did, he's doing fine. I think better than me when I started.
My sister knows that I can repair her phone/laptop but she asks me to do it whenever I have free time and how she can avoid to "damage" it again.
My friends think I'm awesome, but I'm in constant stress (thanks imposter syndrome!).
My dog, he just barks and smiles whenever I'm around and he thinks I'm awesome, so I have that going on for me, which is nice.
Laptop is broken, wifi keeps dropping... ask them to repair it. Reads report back: Keyboard is malfunctioning, replaced keyboard.3
"Non-devs never call Steven Spielberg to have their TVs fixed."
But sure they MUST call a dev to update their Android, iPhone, Windows, installation of Anti-virus, data recovery, malware removal, to shortlist 20 laptops from market, ask for what printer to buy, why is there a weird animation in Android sometimes, come borrow my WiFi, have their phones and computers fixed, RIP old audio CDs (yes!), fix Bluray, fix anything electronic, repair their bike, teach them science, politics...
This While True loop never escape.1
Meanwhile at my place (Translation L-R):
"Wow! Are you good at hacking?"
"Please hack my neighbor's Wi-Fi"
"Download me some movies!"
"Are you good at math?"
"Please fix my phone!"
"Can you remove the virus on my computer?"
"How many hours do you sleep in one day?"
"Put some cheats on this game!"
"Please hack my boyfriend's Facebook account!"
Yep, my family and even the entire neighborhood are ignorant of what I do as a dev!
FFS I'M NOT A PC REPAIR MAN!!! 😤😤😤😠😡1
This was the best hack when I was 11. My computer had a too small fan that was always on max speed, and thus really loud. To overcome this issue I wrapped a thick blanket around the entire computer case. A week later it broke down due to the obvious heating problem, and when it came back from service the repair technician just looked at me saying "Someone has had this computer fucked up intentionally, everything is melted from within. What have you done to it?!" Me being the piece of shit that I was just denied and got a brand new PC for free, nobody ever knew..
After doing a regular CV update, I realised I started coding more than a quarter of a century ago... I then remembered the first command the succeedded on my first PC.
There was a book that expained how to format a floppy disk (format A:) but it didn't work. At that time I had no idea what floppy is but I knew that C: works, so I thought I'd give it a try...
Oh, was there laughter in the repair shop :)
I just fucking hate BGAs* that unsolder themselves.
So, thanks to my laptop slowly breaking apart I decided to reactivate an old netbook my father gave me back in 2014(?) when it failed, to have a device on standby if necessary.
Wasn't really planning to repair it and kept it for spare parts mostly as the whole device is a fucking design failure concerning heat dissipation.
But yet again, I thought I'd give it a try one-two years ago. I soon found out it was said heat problem that caused the error in the device and it'd probably only take some reworking using a heat gun, which I did. Netbook worked for some hours, then was dead again, same error. Lost motivation and stashed it until this week.
Reworked with a hair-dryer this time and it worked! Well, until this morning - same error. Perhaps I shouldn't have tried to run a VM and then shut down the device right after that.
I will now try only one more time, this time just baking the whole damn main board thoroughly.
Either it works or it's really dead after. Either way, I'll be somewhat happier then.
* Ball Grid Array - package type for electronic components like ICs/uControllers8
My family thinks I can fix any broken printer, crack software, detect viruses and repair the apps on their phones.
At the moment, I'm an automation engineer and no matter how many times I explain what that is to them, they keep bugging me to build an online store kinda website with tons of functionality and within a few months. Oh, and make it be in the first results on Google search. I mean ffs, that's frustrating af!
Because in #Adobe's utopia world, #everyone is a local admin.. and is super computer literate and knows how to use the terminal to change permissions. Oh wait no, the fact is the world is filled with organisations whose users act like monkeys in a cage and absolutely cannot be trusted with admin rights.
And yes.. the 'repair' does nothing, of course!
Ughhh Adobe.. get your act together.
Anyone else hate their Macbook Pro 2018? RIGHT after the return policy the speakers start acting like it has fucking tourette's, plus my machine randomly SHUTS DOWN.
Apple Store "Genius": "Yup, we gotta send it in for repair, 10 business days."
10 business days without my work laptop, gee thanks asshole, at least be a little more empathetic about it.
My 2015 Macbook Pro gave me ZERO problems. The only reason why I upgraded was that compiling took forever (React Native).
If I didn't have to work with Xcode I would just sell this thing and buy a PC laptop. (The Surface book looks nice =))11
Family moves abroad.
Has trouble with internet. They called the internet company who sent a repair guy to their house.
Since they couldn't understand what the repair guy said, they have me on FaceTime to talk to the repair guy.1
Had given my laptop at the repair store. They were just suppose to do a checkup and then give a choice on whether to repair or not. They repaired it and charged me 2.8K. No unit replacement or anything, just service. I didn't mind it (was actually happy seeing my laptop boot up and not have a blank screen). It's a dual-boot (Windows/Antergos(Arch-linux)). It booted to Windows instead of GRUB. Didn't care too much, because it had happened before and I had handled it.
After I take it back home, I discover that the WiFi doesn't work (it doesn't even seem to be a driver issue). Live boot of arch doesn't have access to WiFi either. Reinstalled GRUB, only to discover it doesn't boot successfully (issues with video card). So, now I'm stuck with fucking Windows WITHOUT WiFi and an arch-linux that doesn't fucking boot.
Gonna reinstall Arch now.
P. S. : Windows is super fast, because I haven't really used it and don't really like using it. I feel very limited by Windows.9
Windows update time..
Can't, error 0x8024a105
No problem, I'll google that !
First answer in the list:
In the recent Windows 10 update, the error code 0x8024a105 appeared and the update stopped.
How to repair?
Edited by hugeB, 15 March 2017 - 05:46 AM.
Fantastic you solved it, how....10
Took my PC to a good repair shop because there was an issue with the motherboard. They complete ruined my cable management while installing the new motherboard I have a glass side panel. Fml.6
My love of programming has given me a very analytical mind. I find myself being able to learn different things fairly quickly by thinking about the processes involved in getting from point A to point B and breaking down the steps into the smallest logical units.
This is why I find myself being a cycle repair tech on the side. I cycle, so therefore I had to determine not only how my bike operates, but why everything is designed just so and therefore how to diagnose and repair faults efficiently using the right tools or by using the wrong tools very creatively as a workaround.
Everything in life is just code in a different language1
Internet at home down.
Internet at office also down.
Two different service providers but they use the same backbone or whatever you call it shit which is broken and the repair needs hours.
And I still don't wanna rant about it.
Maybe I need to check myself with a doctor.1
So, I'm still not certain if it's actually a bug or merely my lack of experience, but I've been working on a 2D platformer game (using only C++ and SDL2) for roughly 2 years now (on and off; sometimes off for months) and I'm extremely embarrassed about this, but for the life of me, I cannot seem to get the player character's movement and collision physics working properly. It's driving me absolutely insane.
I've read articles and tutorials, referenced books, and posted about it in game development communities (e.g., gamedev.com, Discord servers, etc.), but even though the fundamental structure and explanations made sense, getting the code to work has been unsuccessful, albeit not completely so, but if I get one thing working, another thing breaks. It feels like I'm trying to repair a vase that fell off of a skyscraper and turned to dust on the street below.
I've always been a very tech savvy person with a fiery passion for programming, electronics and game/software/embedded/web development, but to be honest, having such a difficult time with things like this that — in theory, at least — seem like trivial bumps in the road have made me feel like I'm never going to be successful in this field. But regardless of the depressing thoughts of worthlessness, my passion doesn't let me stop trying. Who knows, maybe it'll have to remain just a hobby. 😕6
How to LAN -Party:
1: PC is starting normally, resolution fucked up, restart
2: booting for 10 minutes, restart, 2 times
3: repair tools open, 30 minutes system recovery
4: finally PC starts normally, everything works expect the game i want to play-.-1
I accidentally deleted my boot loader and now my PC won't start. I tried boot repair but no hope. I don't have a win backup either9
Got my laptop back from SquareTrade today. This is after a month, 2 weeks of which they gave no status updates.
Per their "Repair Summary":
Reported issue: Power/Charging port
Parts repaired/replaced: None. OS reloaded
(Note this was originally a Windows 10/Gentoo setup)
WTF??? I thought the extra M2 SSD they included might have been the drive they had replaced, but nope. Both are blank (one W8/what the computer originally came with, the other W10).
I'm at a loss right now.1
Tried to dual boot Arch with Windows yesterday.
Everything was going smoothly. Shrunk the C: partition, ran the installer, installed the OS fine. But it was still booting straight to Windows.
So I edited the BCD to point to Grub instead of Wilndows. Then the plan was to boot into Arch, find Windows, and add it to Grub, problem solved.
Wrong. I had forgotten to disable secure boot. Arch and Grub were booting in BIOS mode, but Windows was UEFI. Grub couldn't boot or even see Windows.
So now I was stuck with just Arch. So I flashed a Windows drive, booted from that, automatic startup repair failed. Opened up the command prompt, tried to rebuild the BCD from there. Surely I can just rebuild it and forget about trying to dual boot right? I just want to get back to being able to use my PC.
Wrong again. Didn't find Windows. Had to get rid of the BCD file before I could rebuild it, but couldn't find it. Found out that I could use diskpart to mount the system partition and assign it a drive letter, renamed the BCD, rebuilt it, and finally was able to reboot into Windows.
Learn from my arrogance. First time Linux users should not attempt to install Arch, let alone do it alongside Windows on the same disk.7
Deployment can be a reason for heartache...
I deployed a website yesterday and it was a damn hustle. After changing into goodmode and typing random stuff into the console, I broke another of my websites on the same server.
Now I had two sites to deploy / repair. Damn.
After a few hours I managed to make both work. But damn, that adrenaline rush that gave me. Fuck!3
So, I got an iFixIt toolkit with a gift card from xmas. Was excited to tear into my iPhone6 given that it had lasted me a long time, and not that long ago, I had the screen repaired given I didn't know how to at the time and was working stupid long hours. I haven't used the phone in about 6 months now.
I open the device, and immediately 2 screws and a bracket fall out of the device. The inside is filthy, and appears to have corrosion (despite the fact I've never gotten water on it, I was kinda anal with that phone).
Whoever the guy was who "fixed" my screen apparently did so in a way that involved spilling something on my phone, over torquing a screw, breaking a bracket, and the entire thing looks sketch.
All while charging over $100. I can see why he insisted on having an otterbox on the phone now, he fucked up and was worried the one screw pin wouldn't hold the screen on. Motherfucking asshole.1
The back glass of my Galaxy S9 broke and it became unusable due to the sharp broken glass. So I switched to an iPhone I had for a few days. I have to admit that the battery life on the iPhone sucks especially on mobile data and heats up way too quickly.
I'm now back to using my S9 after repair and quite happy about it. But then this got me thinking. I'm saddened by the fact that this is one of the last few phones of its kind. I want a phone which:
1. has no notch of any kind.
2. has good battery life (comparable to that of my S9 NOT S9 +)
3. **is not a bitch of Google (or such)
4. is no bigger than the S9
Sadly, there is no such phone. The new Nokia 9 is also one of the better phones for me. But one of the last of its kind. This is just sad. Even if point 3 is removed, there still isn't a phone which satisfies the other three.
I will therefore have no options when I want to upgrade after a few years.14
Ok guys, since what Im using is a laptop with some low specs since Im too broke to even afford a new FM2+ motherboard to repair my desktop pc and have a little more raw power to use and make more fancy stuff, I wish to know if anyone here legit is interested in some Original content images that Im thinking in make just out of spite in the Zerg Rush of users spaming about F. Quantum and if its worth my already highly limited time just to get hopefully more ++ than my last AMD OC that pretty much noone cared about6
Well after a few really downer and shitty weeks, I think I just struck gold...
First I had trouble getting a new job but was contacted personally for a full time position as a printer and copier serviceman which entrails me getting my own company car, new phone and maybe new laptop and the same day I got a call about my phone that was getting repaired, I was expecting to pay around $400+ for the repair,. nope, the repairer paid for a new phone and gave me a brand new one back, even got the latest model revision too!
Shit turned around quick for me! :-D2
And a big fuck you to sony mobile, I hope you die soon.
TLDR: sent a weeks old phone for repair to Sony, they asked 450€ because according to their "experts" chassis was bent and main board was busted besides the obvious screen and touch being broken.
It costed less than 400€ including vat.
Out of spite I ordered a replacement screen for 55€, and it's fucking working again, thanks a lot for the offer but I still can replace an lcd myself. Screw your warranty policies, you made a phone that slips like a wet soap.
I've owned xperias all my life, Arc, U, M, Z1 besides all the dumb phones manufactured by Sony/Ericsson.
Guess I'm finding a new brand very soon.4
Apple for T2 and anti repair stuff (im all for right to repair).
The linux foundation because microsoft vmware and other big companies bought themselves in and they only care about money. The linux world is just starting to become sjw and corporate af.
Microsoft for being microsoft.
Vmware for breaking the gpl and instead of getting fucked in the a they just bought themselves in to the linux foundation.4
I had to repair two phones in two days at TechCrunch NY. I guess the name applies in more than one way...
Now I feel a bit bad about the guy I ranted about before, who did all the talk but none of the work. I started to tell my colleagues and even my boss about my impression. And my boss concurred, was actually so fed up with him that he confronted him...
Later on turned out he was the only one able to repair our mangled git history. Dunno how it'll pan out. The guy is also our 'scrum master'. Maybe doesn't always have to be love, peace and harmony. Time to explore our darker sides and yank out some motherfucking code.1
Init Mud. (A poem)
A Giant Ball of Mud.
Haphazard in structure.
A sprawling, enthralling, duct-taped warning,
Of things to come.
Tumbling down a well-worn path
Of untamed growth and aftermath.
Into Spaghetti-code Jungle.
Where quick and dirty wins the day
And warnings spoken hold no sway
Or fall on deaf ears in the undergrowth.
Bits stuck on.
Bytes taken out.
On top of patches,
On top of obsolescence.
Hacked at, uploaded
All elegance eroded.
Made and remade
Refined and redesigned
Suffocated by expedient repair after expedient repair
The original self no longer there
Replaced by something
Design resigned to undefined
An architectural mystery
Whose function can no longer be
Seen or gleaned
From obfuscated in-betweens
Made and remade
A squirming library of disused.
Pulled at, prodded, committed
Corners cut and parts omitted.
Bug ridden branches fused to a rotting core.
I have used Mac since 2011 and I have made statements about how Windows PCs sucks.
I had to buy a Windows-laptop for engineering school and I have experienced problem after problem after problem.
It took about a month to get the right computer (I ordered online and they missed to add an extra hard drive).
I had to return the second one after 10 days because it was not able to boot.
The third one I had to send to HPs repair place in Poland for a week, because the “X”-button” did not work properly.
I have not used the computer for a couple of weeks and now I was going to create an Android Studio-project and found out that the extra hard drive is missing! (Not physically missing, it does not show up)
When I bought the computer I had to portion the disk, but this time it is not showing up in that tool either...18
(If you don't know what I'm talking about, read this: https://www.devrant.io/rants/805543 )
I have good news!
Finally, my PC is back alive :'D
I took it to where I first bought it, and...
Apparently the reason why it broke was the AC adapter, as they replaced it with a new one... (the PC was still in warranty)
So now I can finally begin to program again and (hopefully) tell you some dev-related rants! So I can actually feel an active part of this community, haha ♡4
The battery of my good old Huawei Y300 is slowly dying. So I thought it was time to cut the battery consumption a little. What a delusion. A new battery costs < $5 btw, but I'm too lazy to order :)
I've tested 16 highly acclaimed (of about 20,000, didn't count all of them) battery apps - they're all!, and I mean all!, total crap. There is not a single app that does what it promises. And all totally fucked up with advertising - including some of the paid apps. Most apps consume more power than they actually save.
The winner of all this shit was the app "Battery Repair", which supposedly repairs broken cells. Well, well.
All that junk should be thrown out of the store. But, no, these crap apps have ratings of 4.5 - 4.8 with millions of downloads. I don't get it.
The only app that actually works is, hard to believe, Kaspersky Battery Saver.
So if someone else wants to "optimize" their battery - forget it, it's not even worth looking for it.8
So a while back I got a new Mac book pro for work, and it was nice for a while, until the keyboard broke, so I gave it to apple so that they would 'repair' it, and although, they gave me a new keyboard, the keys were still garbage, and a while later broke again... and this is the second time that I've had to spend a week without a computer because of shitty butterfly keys... 😢😢😢2
One of my hobbies is to repair stuff.
In front of me is a Xiaomi Notebook air 13.3", a very nicely build device.
But it's driving me nuts, the screen is completely glued onto the front glass.
How the fuck am I supposed to exchange that display with a new one?
The main problem with those devices seems to be the display-cable in the hinge.
It might short 3.3V to 19V backlight, killing the display, the hdmi controller and the audio-chip.
2 ez fixes so far, but that fucken display.
And the absolute worst is that there are 0 official replacement parts available for any of the Xiaomi notebook's.
I made this bad decision to buy pretty pricey laptop with nVidia card. Lenovo Legion Y520.
So yeah, have you heard about optimus technology and how much one can hate nvidia?
> Debian is working, nice.
> Let's try nvidia-driver.
> 48hours later: WOoooooah glxgears at 120 fps!
> Installed some fonts. "Could not load gpu driver". HDMI port stops working. Unable to repair. Entering despair.
> Surviving on dual-booted windows.

Found out yesterday that the only Mac repair shop in town wants $1200 to fix the MacBook Pro I paid $1400 for 6 months ago2
Problem with people asking us to repair things is that sometimes we don t know how to do it.
It's always closed source or you need to be aquainted with a weird new app/social network you never used.1
I worked at a computer repair shop about ten years ago and had a coworker who seemed like a pretty cool guy, very smart, and a few years after I left that job I tried to look him up online to reconnect - I thought there was a potential friendship there. But the weird thing was, for all of his technical savvy, his online presence was almost non-existent. I found him tucked away in some old posts on some weird forum site, so I registered on it just to send him a PM. Unfortunately he never responded.9
So i send my phone to the warranty because of the problema that you can see at the image, and the answer of the company was that it is normal and they don'r repair it.
Can you guys explain me how on the world this is a feature of the display...
PS: the white part you see is a ghost of the previous image4
Hello devs, I need help from database devs.
The company where I'm interning is a non IT company, so they planned to migrate to a SQL Database from their older MS Access Database.
Since I'm the only IT intern, I'm up against the major devs and hot shots from where my company outsources IT solutions.
They suggested SQL Express.
I have a meeting tomorrow with them, please help me so that I can get better results for my company.
Basically I have to question them about how their decision works better for our firm and why didn't we go for MySQL Enterprise Edition or anything which is much better and cheaper and such critical questions.
Please help me.
The Database would be used to store information about the products manufactured and their parts' history so that in future if there's a problem with the product, it can be looked up in the database so that there can be further replacement or repair processes.10
So I'm making an app with a classmate at school, but there's one huge problem. All the PC's and laptops at school are shit. The ICT departement at my school blocks almost everything on them. I can't install any program, open any file and I can't even open the command prompt! So I can't install Visual studio or any other IDE and basically can't do anything besides browse websites that aren't blocked. And they expect me and my classmate to make an app. Fortunately, my classmate has a spare laptop we can use, but it's really difficult for two guys to code on just one laptop. I asked my school if they could buy new laptops or if they could remove they restrictions on two laptops, but they don't want to do any of those things and now we're stuck with just one laptop. I don't know what to do. I fucking hate this!
(This doesn't have anything to do with the topic of the rant, but I just want to complain.)
There are a couple more things I hate about my school. At my school, everyone is forced to use iPads. I don't know why they don't just give us laptops instead of iPads (maybe just because there lazy). So my iPad's headphonejack and homebutton where broken for no reason and I had to get it repaired. But instead of going to an apple store or a repair shop, you need to go to the school's ICT department and get it fixed there. If you don't do that and go to a apple store or something, they will take your iPad and keep it forever! Even though you pay €200 for it every year! Also, the ICT department at my school is lazy as hell! You expect them to repair the iPad themselves, but they just send it to a repair shop. So it wouldn't even matter if I would go to the store myself! 😠 And they even do a really bad job at checking if the device even works after the repair, because I needed to get it repaired three times in a row! And don't even get me started on the bad WiFi connection.11
Last month my phone (YU YUPHORIA) stopped booting up.. so I went the "customer service center" and asked the guy maybe he can install new software. He tried and said we can't repair it.
I love this phone not the best performance phone but I love it. So I don't want to throw it away. So yesterday night I started searching how to install custom ROMs. and found a development mode build for my device. After some tutorials and experiment it's up and running baby... 📱😍. Thank you internet for helping me..1
Today my 2 week old phone slips out of my pocket while standing up, falls on the screen and now it's cracked in multiple places. FML.
RIP Stormtrooper (he's black and white).
Repair is 30% of the new price. Worth it, but still a lot of money and 10 days without the phone.
OK I have RAM but laptop is still in repair LOL. Kind of hoped that it would arrive as the laptop but I ordered it too soon. Oh well at least when it comes I will have the RAM ready.
So yeah. Just clicked "update" in Visual Studio. After 6 hours of waiting, it broke and had to wait an hour to repair it.6
I can officially tell, that XPS 15 series is the best series of laptops.
Mine does have quite a bit of stuck pixels, BUT
I can replace the ram
I can replace SSD
I can change the battery and its size, if I choose a smaller one I can add another 2.5" drive
I can replace the screen
I can replace power button
I can replace a mobo
I can replace the keyboard
I can replace the touchpad
I can use older or newer versions of these things since it will work for my laptop, it's just compatible
I can replace it by myself at home, no need for professional service to make it for me, it's super easy to repair laptop14
TLDR: I need advice on reasonable salary expectations for sysadmin work in the rural United States.
I need some community advice. I’m the sysadmin at a small (35 employee) credit card processing company. I began as an intern and have now become their full time sysadmin/networking specialist. Since I was hired in January I have:
-migrated their 2007 Exchange server to Office 365
-Upgraded their ailing Windows server 2003 based architecture to 2012R2
-Licensed their unlicensed VMware ESXi servers (which they had already paid for license keys for!!!) and then upgraded them to 6.5 while preventing downtime on hosted VMs using tricky transfers and deployments (without vMotion!)
-Deployed a vCenter server to manage said ESXi servers easier
-Fixed a three month gap in their backups by implementing Veeam, and verifying its functionality
-Migrated a ‘no downtime’ fileserver to a new hypervisor host, implemented a ‘hot standby’ server as a backup kept up to date by the minute with DFS replication.
-Replaced failing hard drives in a RAID array underlying their one ‘business critical’ fileserver, which had no backups for 3 months at that time
-Reorganized Active Directory and Group Policy deployment from a nightmare spiderweb of OUs and duplicate policies
-Documented the entire old network and now the new one as I’ve been upgrading this
-Audited the developers AWS instances and removed redundant machines, optimized load balancing on front end Nginx servers, joined developer run Fedora workstations to the AD domain and implemented centralized syslog monitoring on them.
-Performed network scans and rewrote firewall exceptions to tighten security
There’s more, but you get the idea. I’ve now been tasked with taking point on an upcoming PCI audit which will be my first.
I’m being paid $16/hr US, with marginal health benefits. This is roughly $32,000 a year, before taxes.
I have two years previous work experience managing a third party Apple repair facility (SimplyMac) and every Apple certification for warranty repair and software troubleshooting. I have a two year degree in general sciences, with about 4 years of college credit (Two years of a physics education and two years of computer science after I switched focus) I’m actively pursuing a CCNA and MCSA server 2016 with exams paid for and scheduled.
I’m going into a salary negotiation in two months. What is a reasonable salary to request, from your perspective, for someone in my position?
Thanks in advance!6
I bought a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge from my cousin for $450. I then proceeded to root it and everything was fine for a week or so before my phone went into an infinite boot loop after an OTA update.
In the process of trying to fix it, I accidentally flashed a bootloader, unaware that Samsung has the bootloader locked. As a result, I had a completely bricked phone.
I mean legit bricked. No buttons with work and the screen remained shut and I couldn't flash anything over it again to try to repair it. I couldn't even put the phone into recovery mode. I now had the world's most expensive paperweight.
However, I managed to convince Samsung to repair it for me for free! I told them that the phone just stopped responding after an OTA update from them, which isn't so far from the truth.
I only ever had to flash things on the phone to begin with because of their update. Honestly, I wouldn't has had to deal with this problem, and neither would Samsung, if they just didn't lock the damn bootloader! Why are these companies taking away are independent control of our own devices?
Moral of the story: DON'T flash over a locked bootloader EVER or you will end up with a completely brick device, with no solution other than to open it up and replace the motherboard entirely.11
It's always so funny when a person starts using multiprocessing in Python, because if there's "multi", obviously THIS is the thing that should free the person from a headache of having GUI frozen. You know, because it does "multiple" ehm... stuff..... at once....... yeah. And it's popular, it must work for me too! Oh how often I see this. :D
Stupidly enough that's not entirely a user's fault, but Python's as naming things with "multi" doesn't end up well basically with anything. I bet if there was such thing as multipointer in C half of the beginners would be totally fucked and the other one would just break their machines beyond repair with a joy.
Yet... reading the damn documentation should be a requirement before using threading or multiprocessing to prevent the confusion, because there's this funny difference between multiple threads and multiple processes which will haunt you unless you see what's what and use it correctly.2
Can somebody please tell me What is wrong with Microsoft and their broken piece of shit software?! (sorry to any Microsoft devs, if you read this). How the hell is it that their fucking installer and system repair features is this fucking useless? "Sorry, can't install on disk 0,cause the disk is in gpt format" NO SHIT, you were the fucking asshole who formatted it from the begining. Douchebag.10
Boss while working at a computer repair shop, he was a chill guy and great guy to talk to. Didn't mind if I came in a little late and regularly let me leave early.
Regularly got fun stories like how someone's cd drive broke because they thought it was a bagle holder.4
So I shouldn't have written that Linux issue rant. While I'm spending whole fucking day to figure out how to fucking set my fucking secondary monitor to full resolution, the fucking WINDOWS of my designer's PC got BSOD and failed repair.
fuckingShit fucktard full of fuck operation systems with their full of fuck bugsssssss 😠😠😠😠😠
I'm so fucking mad8
The best part is definitely the feeling when you complete a project and you get something from it.
On the other hand everybody assumes you know how to repair a computer xD1
Doing some basic car repair, thinking "this is real work, perhaps I should consider a change", then I drop something that goes into something else into something that looks broken.
Keeping it cool, looking for a keyboard for the good old ctrl+z, a chock occurs... Cries
Oh, crikey: Windows 10 "Inaccessible boot device". Good old "bootrec /fixboot" didn't work, and any claims that "automatic repair" does anything useful is apparently bollocks.
So for the first time ever, I had to use a restore point to revert the system to where it was before Xamarin was installed. The prime suspect for this cock-up is Intel HAXM, since I don't belive anything else in Xamarin possesses the power to accomplish a boot loop.
Booted my laptop in windows 10. Forced to install the new updates. Ubuntu partition got deleted.
Fuck my life, how can get Microsoft away with that? That's so stupid. Now neither Ubuntu nor windows 10 is booting and I have to perform a boot repair and recovery with a live CD...5
When you want to write the unit test that demonstrates a subtle bug, but before recreating the same preconditions you end up writing 15 other tests, testing a lot of other stuff too, that in turn show other bugs, and skyrocketing the coverage (that was sitting at 0% actually).
Like I wanted to repair a hole in my umbrella to not get wet, and built a house instead.
Oh, my worst dev experience.
First of all everyone know it, people who ask you to repair there computer 🤦♂️
Or people who say: "Hey Windows Media player is not working now. Fix it"
But the best moment and worst too is a moment where I present my new website and a friend start to refresh the site with F5 on his browser. I ask him why he do it and he answere "Yeah, you will be rich when I do it"
I don't get it. Why rich? So I ask him and he answere that websites are paid by web request an "clicks" "views" counter.
That was the stupidest thing I ever hear. Okay when I would show ads than maybe it's "true" but without them🤦♂️
But that's not the end after I explained him that it's not so he fucked me up that I would be very stupid because I don't register on a service which pay you for it. I explained him that the only service could be an ad service but no he don't understand it and try to discuss with me that a service like this exist. I ask for a link to the service and he could not answer.
For me it was the worst experience because for me it was the most stupidest thing ever and he try to discuss with me and really we discuss 1 hour about it🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️3
The more problems I encounter with Windows the more I have the impression these infested chimps never implemented a real system repair/restoration feature but just faked it with randomized error messages.
Now Windows 10 can't even rollback updates anymore but lands in an infinite boot loop that even a reset to an earlier restoration point won't fix.
And the Windows repair option lists two Windows installations even though there's just one.
Somehow the roles of Linux and Windows have switched nowadays, by now I had to reinstall Win10 5 times on three PCs in the last 12 months.
Windows 8 was shit too but at least it didn't fucking break within a week.3
Does anybody know anything about this? I read it for the first time and I couldn't find any confirmation anywhere.
What the fuck is wrong with us? I don't know about Germany and UK but...
Why Italy should block such a proposal? We have no fucking tech insustry in our country, neither phones or pc or households appliances, so why the hell should we block that.
Where the fuck is the profit in this decision?5
Yay today my power extender broke!
(the thing that allows you to connect multiple devices to one sockiet, i dont remember the correct term)
That means i need to buy the new one! Because the old one is using rivots it means i cant repair it!
Stupic fucking lead free solder! Why do you even use this shit for connections? It will create those tin wiskers (small wires) that will short shit! This is the reason why my 3 old power extenders failed! And it is propably the reason why it failed as well!1
Linux certainly is the best. It works even on my slow 4gb laptop.
One of my family member's laptop running vista went dead today. Checked system, seems like only workaround is using repair disks with iso. Used this chance to finally convince her on moving to ubuntu.
Well, considering there wasn't even any comparison needed for Vista x Linux, she might just need to suit herself using libreoffice instead of winoffice. Just afraid she(not familiar with computers) might be bothered about the sudo here and there-thats something that takes time to get used to for non-programmers.
Well, changing someone's OS really is a great accomplishment. Kudos for myself.3
Jesus, I'm SO fed up with this mindless application of CRUD. This application would literally be less than half its current size if we weren't implementing crud for fucking broken device reports and repair offers, stuff that should have many states, a create action strictly bound to a user type and view/field wise edit phases bound to a state-usertype pair.
Hi I just joined this great Community and here is my thoughts about programming tap "++" if you agree if not then change your mind.
For me programming is like becoming wizard of next generation. Like wizard you can control or create anything because in future you will find electronics containing programs written by a wizard (programmer). We are not people who can repair computer but greater then that because a pc is just a box without programs (software)
You are reading this article because you loves challenges and you are hard working too.1
Was a PC repair guy. A wealthy man saw that I have potential, asked me to build a website. I started learning how to code. Frustrated, quit the job, and bummed off for weeks. Started fresh, like magic, everything seemed easier without the pressure. Freelanced for a few years, now at a media company, as an XD.3
I love classic cars because of their simplicity.
I don’t want to remove dozens parts, need computer or call support to fix simple car problem.
Mechanical solutions were good and reliable in some of the old cars so we can still renovate them and use them after 50-60 years, we won’t be able to do it with modern cars so we are in fact producing lots of waste.
Today’s car companies are ripping off their customers by providing overcomplicated solutions that prevent customers to repair a car on their own.
And don’t let me start about proprietary car software and protocols.
That’s a big world problem right now.
Kid I work on high school tech team (mostly hardware repair) who tries to be just like me and has no clue what he's doing and refuses to listen when I explain things to him
He Saw me edit the registry to unblock my developer tools (school laptop) and see he decides to try the same thing
Completely fucked his registry up causing me to have to fix it (with minimum knowledge myself) so our boss doesn't know I edited something I'm technically not supposed to and he restricts developer tools in a way I can't access at all without domain admin credentials
Not my story, but something that my friend did which inspired me a lot. So, a friend of mine who just graduated with a bachelor's in physics, had a month off after one of his semesters, and while most of us ended up doing internships in companies, he decided to do something else. He decided to go up to a local mechanic and ask him to teach him how to repair bikes for a month. Now in India, a mechanic is sadly one of the least reputed jobs, so for him to go there and work for free was unusual. After working there, he told me about the things he learned and to what an amazing extent he could apply that practical knowledge he gained. It was truly impressive. Which is why I have decided to do something like this in the future as well. With enough savings, I'm sure all of could survive a month. I can't even begin to imagine the potential of this, you could learn so much practically.
Aunt asked me to repair her phone because "nothing is working". She said she tried every phone repairer in the town. She blames the phone, the phone manufacturer and everyone else.
She finally admitted the phone fell into water and she didn't tell it to the repairers. Then she wonders why they can't do magic.
"But aren't the front camera and the rear camera the same camera?"
I needed to take today off to prep for a home repair. I didn't have much notice either, but I assumed my manager would be okay with some last minute PTO because of how relaxed everyone usually is around here. Guess that didn't include me.
I should have never assumed that my boss was someone I could think of as a peer. I called their boss "Boss" one time, and they said that they don't look at it that way, and that they see me as a peer. My boss nodded in agreement, but it was all formalities, and I bought right into it. Especially since both of them, even the other guys, take time off on a whim. But I'm somehow tied to a stricter standard, even though I can't beg hard enough to get so much as an email answered for legitimate reasons. They'll jump right on my ass when they feel I'm not working as hard as them, but I get silence most of the rest of the time. Bullshit. It's no wonder the conversation changes when your boss sits down at the lunch table. How depressingly typical.1
Dual Monitor Setup!
The computer from the guy sitting next to me was taken for repair, so I decided to take his left over monitor and connect it to my computer, and it was awesome! One week later the setup is still there. Looks like everyone else continued using both monitors.1
Repair printers... Somehow writing code translates to the ability to fix any printer problem in their minds.3
If your project gets fucked up beyond repair, for example by your IDE (I'm looking at you, Android Studio) try this:
0. Backup any ignored but essential files in your project (e.g. secrets) outside of your project directory.
1. Close your IDE.
2. git clean -xdf
3. Restore any backed up local files.
4. Reopen the project as a new one in your IDE.
This is awesome, because it cleans up everything non git and not committed. So any local project files configured by your IDE will be nuked, which allows for a clean start. Also, all your locally committed work is preserved.
BTW, if you really need to start over (even with git), then just remove all the things an clone the remote repo again.
Every type of doctor is a different kind of debugger for the Human Operating System 🤔
They debug system services like "ear", "throat" and "poop".
Sometimes they even repair or take apart systems for different reasons!1
So I went to a car repair center and asked if they could fix my bike. They said they could but they won't. This is outrageous, obviously a bike is less complicated than a car and they can actually fix it, they just won't because it's "not their job". Unbelievable!
//This didn't really happen of course
//people don't think this is acceptable, but if I won't fix their laptop they are surprised and act the same way. I study ICT (embedded software engineering and cyber security, but they don't understand that so ICT it is) so I HAVE to fix their laptop....
//Non-techies should really learn that just because we can do something, we don't have to do what they ask of us17
So while talking always nice about Linux (today as well on devrant), my laptop wouldn't boot. I realised the battery was drained out as i had put it to sleep.
Now when i switch it on the light just blinked and nothing happened. After sometime when the battery was a bit charged and i had tried to hard reset the laptop, still wouldn't boot.
An hour later it was stuck at the bios screen asking me what I'd like to do- boot normally or repair. Anything I clicked it'll reboot and get back to that screen.
I realised after sometime that it was the RAM that was being the pain. So got a bootable usb to check the RAM. Post that it booted without new installation. Phew...
Just fixed my broken htc one m9 (boot loop after legitimate update) by powering it up month after putting in back to box for future repair. Who to blame? NSA? Android 7? SD Card?
Thank god for Git. I fucked up my webpage beyond repair and I am not an expert in html div alignments. I pulled in a commit I did an hour ago and at least got the page back to normal. I don't even want to imagine what devs did before the days of source control. D:
Tomorrow will be spent learning how to better follow closing </div> tags. :(4
PC desktop at work is failing, so i had to take my personal laptop last week. Almost lost a working day because of that ..
Took the desktop home to try and repair it on the free day, but for now i can't even plug it on one of my different home monitors ..
Gonna be fun !7
The repair shops my dad have gone to all use the excuse of 'go to the manufacturer to do that'.
Now my dad thinks you can't buy replacement parts online >>>:(3
When I say I'm a developer, it means that, in simpleton language, that I don't do your backups, I don't "repair" you PC because you're a baffon and I certainly do not edit company's logo which is in .png format deliver it in .cdr file and expect it as, as good and perfect as original, So fuck you, you impatient , imbecile , pompous prick I've ever met
> "Yeah take as much time as you want, but do it quickly"
I mean what the fuck does that even mean, if you want it done quickly then say so, be a man and face it and don't hide behind the excuse of "take as much time as you want"
Fucking idiots, little do they know when I'm in the zone I need time to think before act so I don't get blamed for "un-satisfied" product in the future.
So I've decided to leave loopholes in the current project I've been working on, deliver it, and leave the company and make their lives living hell, I know this is beneath anyone's standards but I have to do this to teach them how to treat a person properly,FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK,
This is going to be fun9
Well, wasn't my mom, but once, i was in the house of the nanny of a girl i used to date..
I've told her that Im a developer and The nanny already got it like : "ok you know about cumputer and stuff related"..
So..the internet connection was shitty as fuck
She asked me to repair the internet,
I told her I didn´t know anything about network, but.. she insisted.
I said that she better call their internet company and they would explain what is the situation there..
She told me that It was unnecesary, and insisted again..
(We wera talking in the bedroom)
So i left the bedroom, then I went to fucking internet modem, unplug the power cable, then plugin it again..
The internet was still shitty, BUT, she had a placebo effect about the speed.. she was so happy with me and she started saying that I was smart.. (I wanted to kill myself)
we stop dating ..1
Thank to this UPS driver ... i'm not going to get my package (laptop screen) until Monday evening.
Express Priority shipping $35.xx or whatever that is down the drain.
Never had this issue with Fedex and 100's packages delivered.
This ends the rant.3
I was working for a small welder repair shop when they decided they needed to upgrade their office computer. I suggested a PC due to it being cost effective and compatibility with the billing software the office manager /owner's wife insisted on using. They decided on an expensive Mac setup and had to install Windows on it so the billing software would work. When I realized what they did, I asked what dumbass would pay 2,000 on a Mac setup only to use Windows and the wife said "me".3
The OnePlus website literally has a "Request Repair" option under the instructions to manually upgrade your OS 🤣4
I got the Aero15. Had to send it in because ctrl+alt+shift+s (IntelliJ Preference menu) and some others critical shortcuts weren't working. Got a reply a week later.
"Thank you for using our service. The explained fault isn't actually a fault. If you want to use that button combination simply remap the FN key. Mind you this will disable any FN key combinations."
"What about all the other combinations?"
"Ok we returned it to the technicians who will do their best to repair it."
I await their response. But seriously, for a company that makes GAMING keyboards this is pretty embarrassing. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more attention.
There was a problem in my enterprise last week that I couldn't repair because it was my school time. So, for a week, the person in charge of deliveries couldn't import directly the adresses because the csv generated by the site had an error. I came back this morning and managed to correct the error.
In fact, the whole csv was generated in PHP, with code like:
$txt .= $code.";";
But for an unknown reason at the generation, the csv decides to crop 5 characters at the end of the documents, so the last semicolon and the country code were absent. So I had to add a string at the end of the document ("dgdgdgdgd") so it crops useless characters.
I really hate when I don't understand.2
Is there any solution to the “Preparing Automatic Repair” error in windows?
It has gone in an infinite loop.
I have Lenovo Ideapad 300.7
Currently sitting on the toilet, browsing devrant while waiting on 4 Windows installations to finish up2
- I'm an IT lover...
- me and my friends have some laptop to repair. You re going to have so much fun! Don't thanks us..
Today my teacher said to not even touch our PC's because we can destroy them... It's not like we're already 18 and he's supposed to teach us how to use and repair them because the school subject is called "exploitation of computer technology devices". Also he said we can use books while exams so I wasted my time on learning where is every option in kmail, hopefully there was more questions about terminal and FTP... (I wanted to pass this exam with my own knowledge to learn anything and there's my 100%). This guy is so annoying :/4
-Be Friday morning
-Be me sleeping, I have my vacation.
-Got SMS from secretary that her office (MS office 2013 pro) not working Word, Excel, Outlook.
-Ignored, still sleeping
-After hour received call from her. Answered say I will be after half a hour.
Got shower, breakfast and went there.
-an old error appeared again. Can't open any of programs, same error, can't remember error codes. But it's update or something breaks it, tried reinstalling, but it will shows up again. Quicker fix is repair.
-turned off updates cuz I don't want to deal with this everyday.
Anyway. Fuck Microsoft monkeys for not testing their shit before releasing1
// Make this less shitty
// Repair later
// Clean up and make it less half asses
Those are my 3 laziest things I end up doing in a bunch of my progra2
I'm opening a case against Lenovo due to their bad warranty support. It's been over a month and a half since I reported an issue with my ThinkPad and they still haven't fixed it. The laptop was bought in September, the case opened in October and in December I still have a faulty screen with which I can't no longer work because it was frying my eyes. Note that this machine has a Warranty Extension for 3 years Onsite next business day repair.
TL;DR if you own a ThinkPad, pray that it doesn't have any hardware issues. If you're thinking about buying one, DON'T!5
My freshly out-of-warranty laptop just started crapping out and I have an un-pushed branch on it. Of course. Hopefully repair and recovery efforts go well.1
So got my pixel 2 XL screen replaced after months of waiting on the part, took it to my usual repair guy and it was fixed within the hour, everything was all fine.
Went home, went to take a photo aaaaaaaaand cameras aren't working.... For fuck sake!
Why can't I have nice things...3
Right now it's raining in São Paulo, and quite a lot.
While I also worry about it because of usual stuff (floods, infiltration, etc.), I'm also jumping like a little kid.
Puddles? No! Free bath? Almost!
It comes with a free excuse to NOT do work because of a small power outage, caused by poor maintenance of utility poles in my street.
Actually, one of the transformers in one of the poles just goes "bzzt" then "blam!" and then we have to wait for them to repair after rain stops.
It's always like this.
I know, it's NOT a good thing. But it's not bad to have a little rest, right?
It's pretty sad to reach a state where I'm happy when these things happen. :/2
Build my own phone and support the Zerophone project by writing code.
Seriously what the fuck is going on with the development of major companies smartphones. Every year all there is are larger displays, better and more cameras, faster processors and some more 'AI' thrown into the mix.
What the heck am I supposed to do with a phone costing multiple hundreds of euros but locked down with an OS spying on you. The processing power available is hardly ever used because most people just use apps like Instagram, WhatsApp or other messaging services.
I get why larger screens are useful but at some point it gets ridiculous.
Better cameras are useful to some degree as well but there's a limit to it.
If you really want to get into photographing then please buy an actual camera.
Another aspect I'd of course like to talk about is privacy. It's hardly existent on IOS or Android smartphones with Google services. Of course one can install different ROMs like Lineage OS but if I already pay multiple hundreds for a device then I'd prefer it working for and not against me.
And dare you break a single part of your phone. You can't really repair it yourself anymore and one can't even change its battery. Most people either have it repaired or just buy a new one and throw it away. There is so much electronic waste, very difficult and expensive to dispose of, just buried in the ground somewhere.
Summing up: I don't really know where the development of smartphones is heading. A phone is a device you carry around with you almost everyday so I'd like it to be tailored to me and not spy on me.
I hope the Librem phone will be a success and other open source phone projects will gain more attention. I want a phone I can repair myself and tailor the software running on it to my needs. I'd like to write messages, listen to music, make calls, run a WiFi hot-spot on the phone and maybe play some tiny games on it once in a while.6
Seeking help from anyone able to read Laptop motherboard semantics sheet
In short: Looking for a blown fuse on Laptop (Dell Inspiron 7547) near LCD cable connector, as not getting backlight after a new screen installation. Screen is functional and is detected properly and the device is passing all the diagnostics tests.
Issue tracked here
So a bit ago I posted a rant saying that I would be getting ElementaryOS onto my computer and trying it out, buckle up kiddos because this goes to shit in just a moment.
I did everything right, used Rufus correctly and didn't destroy my computer nor my installer, good! I set it up, get everything going and everything is running smoothly. One problem... I couldn't download **any** programs that weren't from the Ubuntu Store, which really annoyed me because I like to use Brackets, and I couldn't find it in the UStore...
So I messed up **really** bad here... I didn't *format* my Elementary Installer, but tried to delete the files like a pleb and stick an Ubuntu ISO in it's place, I didn't even think on going through Rufus again, I just slapped that shit in there without a thought.
I restart my computer, I read a forum stating that I would get an option that allows Ubuntu (or another Linux distro) to take over the partition of a previous distro. Neat! Another bloody problem is that I decided to use "Win + R" and manually delete the Elementary partition **myself**... What is even wrong with me...
So I restarted it, and before my father left to go shopping, he said I should go into the BIOS to change the boot order (Now this is where I **really fucked up**. Thought what I said before was bad?).
Cool, so I boot my PC and go into the BIOS, now I couldn't figure out on my computer where the boot order was, when it was right in my face the whole damn time... I managed to almost destroy my entire BIOS with the fucking file in my USB stick, because I was being an idiot...
I restart, GRUB opens up with a black screen and white text in the top left corner, know what the most important line is in that small block of words? "unknown filesystem"... Of fucking course I fucked it that bad, GRUB didn't even give me the option of just using Windows 10 instead, just quietly gave me the middle finger since I basically nearly fucked everything.
What's funny is that I had someone (who lives with us, let's call him Jeff) look at my computer because I was done being a dumbass.
He told me that I still had my BIOS (which was a bloody relief, because I thought I basically destroyed my computer doing what I did) and that all I need to do is fix the installer I tried to use.
I gave him the USB and just started to play on my phone.
Then I remembered something maybe an hour or so ago... I had an older installer that I used on my shitty laptop awhile back, if I can find it again I could just use that instead of waiting on Jeff. I dug around my room and found the USB that had a working Ubuntu ISO on, correctly placed inside this time.
I basically walked up to my computer, plugged it in and started it up, and it worked. I got Ubuntu and Windows 10 back, and I was basically laughing like I just saved a man's life.
Moral of this story: Don't be like me and do something stupid, especially if you don't know what the fuck you're attempting at...
Got all excited to work UNTIL VS UPDATE FUCKED UP AND GOT STUCK.
My VS is over 40gbs of shit. If I've to repair/reinstall that shit, I'm going to lose it.1
Not see any windows vista or older machine come in for repair. It's too annoying explaining that I don't support old shit.
Why do devs automatically become the ones who can apperantly repair not working printers? Seriously, a friend of mine wrote to me today like I can actually do something without seeing it first. I'm not saying I can't do something about them but I don't want to because it takes time, and I would have to see it irl, it's so fucking annoying.6
I spend fucking 6 hours of the birthday party of my girlfriends father fixing his M.2 SSD involving:
* driving through half of the city because the store nearby had closed half an hour ago... (and spending 30% more)
* cloning the drive back and forth (including several session of browsing to find the solutions to several errors)
* trying to repair bootloader (without success)
... Just to reinstall the old one because it wouldn't boot from the new one.
And tomorrow I'm going to a business trip and I all I wanted was to prepare some side projects for the 4 hour long ride.
Fuck you M.2 and mother fucking windows 7 for being such shitheads.5
Fucking windows crapped out on me. I'd entirely removed Ubuntu from my main of so I could game more and then Windows decides to just fucking die. No recovery possible. No repairing. No CMD. Stuck in an endless "attempting to repair loop".
Please, Windows. I love playing games and your software share is better but this whole bullshit of not letting me access stuff or fix errors is just such a ballache.
LET ME FIX MY SHIT!2
Update on https://devrant.com/rants/2127480
So I sent my Pixel 3a with a broken screen to the Google repair center and within 2 days I got a response that there's liquid damage. OMFG.
So now I get options:
1. Not repair, I get my money back.
2. Buy a refurbished one for basically the new price and I might not get the same colour device.
So basically I'm forced to choose option 1, because I could also buy a new one at the same price.
So just due to bad luck I now don't have a functioning Pixel 3a any more.
On the bright side: I explained my story to Google in a contact form and they called me back within 10 seconds. I spoke to the most helpful employee ever (Chris). He was very understanding and called it an exceptional situation. He now is reaching out to the repair center where he can get in touch with the actual repair people and see what can alternative Google might be able to offer me.
I don't expect anything, but kudos for Google's customer support.
Also, why do I keep hoping that this multibillion dollar company would just say: hey buddy, here's your new phone for free, just make sure you will promote it with your friends and family if you like it.8
I remember when that IRS back tax scam was a thing and I had to explain to my parents that they couldn't access irs.gov or the fraud reporting sites because their home network had been MITM'd. Was told "But it's a .gov, aren't those only accessible if you're in the government?" Then they blamed me because I'm "a hacker and maybe the feds caught on" (I do digital forensics and security auditing, but my day job is enterprise hardware repair.) Should have just tethered to my phone for my visit and let them suffer the consequences tbh3
I started running a Database benchmark yesterday morning, with my system configuration, expected time to complete was 36hrs(arround), so I left it and made sure no one disturbs (I stuck a note in the monitor) because it was on common system in the lab.
Then I went to my other work.
Evening ,I came to check the progress, my monitor was switched off, I thought its in power saving mode!
Fuck, I bend down and see the CPU is off!
Wtf!! Who shut it down ,even after the note.
Then I saw the electric outlet was off!
Then after wards asking ppl in the lab, they told ,the cleaning person was cleaning the switches, so yeah she could have by mistake!
* I facepalmed *
So again, I set it up with frustration!
Today morning ,I came to see the progress
FML, from no where ,
" It's in Windows automatic repair loop! "
It's been 3hrs, trying to get out of that loop without loosing the data.
1TB of data is there, took 1month to setup all the things
Fuck Microsoft for adding these kind idiotic stuff in windows.
Is there a spirit in the lab not allowing me to do benchmark?
Colleague alerted me to the fact I got a flat tire. Won't be able to slip out until my lunch break to check on the damage. It's been an expensive few months including this one so I'm going to have to dip into savings to cover the repairs. It's a small car so I don't have a spare and I don't have a repair kit but hopefully roadside assistance will be able to help. Never been in this situation before so I'm feeling like a dumb newbie.7
Only Windows would give me crap with Dual Boot... fresh install on a separate drive for my ancient Macbook pro and Win10 needs to Repair Disk every time it starts up... might have to buy an actual windows computer again just to use the software to read computer codes on Vw's before selling my car.5
Spent last 2 days trying to get an upstream data file loaded. I've now concluded it's just corrupted during transfer beyond repair... But I got to practice lots of Linux commands trying to figure out what the issue was and fix it (xml parser was throwing some error about nulls originally)
vi, grep, head, tail, sed, tr, wc, nohup, gzip, gunzip, input output redirection
Today I've experimented the windows' blue screen of death...
My windows partition was f*ck up.
I tried many fixes, like boot from grub (which very complicated), boot from a usb with ubuntu live version and run boot-repair.
Bit finally I ended up, make a live usb of windows 10, (tried 6 times before finding the good way to do it with uefi bios) and reset windows without deleting my personnal files.
I'm pretty much proud of me right now.2
Anyone here good with routers?
How to repair a bricked router?
I just wanted to know that before I brick it.
P.S. sorry for putting as rant. I guess I'm bad at searching but want to get more coverage of the question. Also I'm pretty sure I won't be able to survive stack exchange on my own question12
My computer has gone to repair so for the meantime I'm computer-less. Which sucks big time because I have projects and tests coming up (not to mention personal projects and other stuff I've been asked to do) and I kinda have to leech off my friends and I don't like doing that, but, for now, it's what I'm doing. My old toshiba couldn't handle whatever I have to do, damn thing should be going through menopause or something. I wasn't a good owner LoL
I never really know if it'll boot during the first minute after I turn it on or if'll take it hours to do so, so I don't wanna risk it taking it with me to uni 😬 Not to mention it's still running Vista 😅
So my brother left to go to a friend's house until sunday so for the today and tomorrow I have access to the beast that is his computer ☺
I don't mean beast as a bad thing, it's a good computer, but it has an almost full SSD and I need to install a couple things so I can work on it :') (I'll uninstall them later and try to leave it as I found it LoL)
I can finally take a bit to play as well 😥 as I haven't been able to do so, as not only my PC is on repair, but I've been leaving uni late (after midnight - I valour my sleep OK). Luckily one of my house mates lets me use her PC after she goes to bed or her bf arrives to our house. The other day I managed to install steam and play a bit (she gave me permission to do so and I uninstalled them later) 😂 her computer almost died on me, it only has 4GB of RAM :') poor thing was over working to keep up LoL
Now, my brother's computer has a mechanical keyboard and besides the macro keys (they're on the far end of the keyboard, where you'd expect the shift/ctrl/caps lock/etc keys to be), I'm loving it tbh. It's a cheap keyboard, my mom didn't want to buy anything too fancy for him, but I like the sounds it makes 😅 may get one for myself (a mechanical keyboard I mean LoL. I really liked one I saw here on devRant that looked like a typewriter but it's WAY out of my league for now HaHa)
First laptop I ever owned (around a decade old) continues to live, just in another form. After the first 6 years, the battery died, half the keyboard doesn't work, and the monitor began to fail.
But it still works, so I have decided to give it new life. Gonna make it a new body, add an SSD, new battery, substitute screen, replace keyboard... Maybe this is too costly. No, it must be done.
Finally install a lightweight Linux distro. It shall be glorious!2
So one of my co-workers had issues with his MKP 2010, it wasn't booting up, wasn't charging, basically acting as a brick. He went everywhere around the office asking other to revive it. I was the last person - my duty was to take out the hard drive and trash it.
I asked him if I can keep it, he allowed me to do so.
After a couple of days I got back to it, installed a hard drive, which I had from my friend from a while ago.
- Played around with charger, got it charging
- Boot it up to recovery mode (I was very excited when I saw that globe spinning)
- The Wi-Fi didn't connect, used LAN
- Formatted drive, installed OS
- Got to endless loop of recovery mode
- Found out that the digits on the keyboard type lower line of letters.. :/
- Boot to safe mode - worked
- Endlessly booted to recovery mode as I tried to get to boot menu
- Realized that the left Shift, Control, and Option does not work
- Used external keyboard and got to boot menu
- Still no success with booting to regular mode
- NVRAM reset!!!!
- Booya! It works!
Should I bother and replace the keyboard? I mean it doesn't matter that much, probably will give it to my mother :)1
I don't know why you expect your website to be done in a month when you can't even fucking decide what it should be.
I CAN'T READ YOUR MIND ASSHOLE.
Don't tell me that I did it wrong or it doesn't look right when you said that you wanted it like that.
I wasn't hired as a web developer, I've done high voltage electrical work, machinist work and repair of the shit you can't even take care of. All for 15usd a hour. If they don't keep their promise to bump the pay....1
Many small things.
I just realized, my phone number contains 1337. 😁
Didn't for a very very long time.🤔
College asked if I killed someone for it. 😉
have a dead lg29ea monitor that I planed to repair.
It shows randomly coloured stripes on the screen and no picture.🤔
Thought it was the controller.
New controller arrived today after I snatched it on eBay.😀
It's not the controller.
Fuuuuck! Son of a didly
Got a replacement laptop last Friday after I sent the other back for a repair and installed arch (manjaro) but I think im gonna go back to Fedora which I had on before with xfce4
I started to learn coding at school using RM Basic. I made a script with an infinite loop using goto that flashed the screen different colours and said error on it. I left it running. Found out later the it guy took the computer away for "repair"...
Someone asked me for help with his netbook not being able to boot. Turns out the last person who tried to repair it wiped out the HDD without installing an OS. Another thing is that this one's legacy. Glad that I still keep a Windows XP ISO here with me.3
Msvcr100.dll you sack of shit, how many different exes to repair the 2010 c++ redistributable do I have to try just so I can install some bloody software.
Windows 10 ,Microsoft pls1
Mom thinks I'm a hacker/computer repair man that is available 24/7. My mom literary thinks she will get virus by opening her front door and is afraid of computers because of the media. My dad used to know some little things but since I started to take care of it he stopped learning and caring about it. Nowadays he doesn't think I do anything and just sit on my ass looking at videos or something.
There have been several occasions where a teammate's computer was acting up and upon me walking over the issue resolved.
Now they all think I'm a wizard...1
Java module system is broken beyond repair. I don't understand how they could come up with this piece of shit ... I have no words ...3
Follow up on my mum's laptop - 3 screws fell out from the bottom cover on the screen's side, now it's impossible to adjust the screen without risking ripping the top cover off.
So I went to the service manual online for info, and it was actually a fun read. Read your devices' service manuals and part info.
Open them too, it's all very interesting.
Nothin more annoying than fixing the lightning port on an iPhone... charging works.. mobile signal drops out sporadically!!!! Fuuuuuck!!!
After coming back to my desk I cannot unlock my screen. So again I have to go to my Mac or even Windows to google my shitty Linux problem. Nothing particular turns up. So I switch to another tty and rummage through the process list. Kill some java that took 11GB of RAM and Firefox that always keeps some zombies. Nothing.
Grep the processes: oh let's nuke "light-locker". Bingo.
The only downside of this brutal unlock: I cannot lock the screen again. So in any case another reboot? Wasn't this the standard repair method of that other OS that should not be named?3
Finally my laptop is back and it's keyboard problem, thanks for official repair stop. Other two unofficial repair stops told me it's main board problem, FUXK THEM.
tl;dr- laptop wouldn't shutdown, was gonna remove the battery but stroking the circuit board restarted it.
I wanted to try Chromium OS, so I live booted it and it was ok. Pretty simple at face value, and obviously very browser based, the annoying thing is I had to go for the Guest account or sign into your Google account, local users didn't seem to exist.
I tried both and it's pretty annoying having to be online for Chromium OS. I assumed it involves a browser and probably Google quite a lot, but this is just pushing it on me! The UI looks alright though.
Ok, now to what happened when I tried to shut the laptop. It just blackscreened and was still on. So I left it and my dad charged it up.
Now, I've opened this laptop before but not while it's on! I thought I was grounded by not touching the carpet, and had released the static electricity. I was planning to read the repair manual and remove the battery then reinsert it, but dumbass me touched the circuit board on purpose, thinking "I can prove to myself I'm grounded!". It restarted. Luckily I didn't mess up the whole system board o_o
yeah that's it3
Client's PC. Sure I can fix, but we'll have to replace nearly everything. Better off buying a new one.3
So I went to a service center to repair my cracked mobile screen. I thought that the process would be completed in a few hours so I didn't took any backup.
Guy: You need to hand over your device for 2 days.
Me: Okay, no problem just fix it. (At this point i was desperate because a bunch of shops already told me that the complete model needs to be replaced)
Guy: You also need to remove any screen lock from it.
Me: But why?
Guy: We need to test once we fix the display. The repair util can be accessed by an inbuilt app.
Me: *Internally screams, my pr0n collection, my browsing history...*
Me: Just give me a minute. *Uninstalls a bunch of apps*.
Me: Handing the device to him. *crying internally and thinking if anything was left*.
Me: While returning, Fucking fuck now how am i gonna suppose to book myself a cab.. *facepalm myself with a fist*2
Ran a windows registry error fixer 5 times, each time it says there are only 512 errors. I don't know if it is failing to delete them, or hitting some type of self imposed RAM limit...
Also half of the comments on Cnet say they think it's pretty good, and half say it's spam ware, but I haven't seen any ads. (average 4.5/5)
Anyone know if "Windows Registry Repair" actually works?2
Wow. Windows is the silliest OS ever. The repair disc does not find my Windows Installation. I only have one HDD.
(continuation of my previous post, the one that started with me talking about hackintoshing my laptop).
So after a while of playing around with installers, I got Server 2008. Standard installation problems. I decided to search for a Windows 7 ISO on my external drive, but it started acting up. Switching up the cables - nothing. So I switched to another laptop - there I could use it properly, somehow. I made a search, and found a bunch of files - I took the best ISO with Win7 I could find and used Rufus to put it on my pendrive. I booted into the installation nicely. Then, I went into the startup repair. It started searching for systems, and then a message popped up telling me that I can repair some startup. I restarted, and guess what?
I got into the system picker, where I could finally access Windows 7.
I am so relieved.
It's rather a question. I am thinking of changing my Linux distro from Lubuntu to Arch Linux or Gentoo.
My main reason is that I want to achieve customizability and the freedom that Linux offer and also build my distro from ground up.
Second reason is that I want to switch a little bit I am using Lubuntu for 2-3 years and is worked great for me. Especially because I have an older laptop (Asus K53E) and windows 7 worked really slow on it. But with this distro, everything works much faster and has all features and tools for programming that I need despite being minimalistic.
I have also used other distros before this one. These are some of them that I can remember Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Mint, Bodhi Linux.
I would say for myself that I am quite familiar with terminal and I also wrote some bash scripts on complexity level like these: https://github.com/RokKos/..., https://github.com/RokKos/...
But my main concern is that would fail to install any of this two distros or that I would damage my computer beyond repair...
So my main questions are:
What are you experience with this two distros?
Did you have any troubles installing and setting up distro?
What is overall experience with this two distros?
Was is worth to switch to any of these two?
And you could also share what distro you are using and maybe some rants that occur using them.14
So I'm repairing Visual Studio because it's behaving differently. Been waiting for it to complete for more than 5 hours now. Hope we'll have a better internet connection1
Hey guys. Need your help. I bought a new laptop with Windows in it. I just use Windows for gaming and gave been using Linux for the past few months. I installed it properly, but when I try to shut it down, it shows me a black terminal full screen and on the bottom it says 'try to repair loop, reboot needed, shutdown failed' and this has been happening every time. What do I do?7
Printer shit continued: So we got this great Lenovo Ideapad with a Windows, so why not print from there? Installed driver from webpage and really printed nicely.
Then I removed ton of Lenovo's crapware + McAfee (leftovers luckily were cleaned by McAfee's tool), so that this shitty device could be used reasonably - device would deserve rants on its own. AND boom, Windows USB printer driver seems broken beyond repair. Printer not even recognized. Shouldn't it all be plug'n'play?5
I'm currently working for 1month to win some money in a company that repair people computer and do a bit of programming.
They've made a software that get every value in a table with SQL and print it.
My boss, gave me as project to make a software that get everything from a database and copy paste it into an another, like a automatic backup system. BUT HE ASKED ME to do it from the last software with Delphi and on Windows XP...
God damn, now i have to remove everything about printing while i was just able to do the software from scratch with C#...9
Tip of the year? I bought an iPhone 7 because the battery in my 3 year old iPhone 5s was very bad. It had less than 25% of its original capacity.
I gave the 5s to my son but quickly realized that he could not use a phone with such a bad battery. We therefore considered buying him a brand new 5s.
Luckily I found out that repair shops can actually replace the battery! I thought that this was not possible. So now my son has a 'new' iPhone 5s for 1/10 of the price of a new 😄1
I open Photoshop, I open an image, I start editing colors. I think to myself "I need to change units to pixels instead of inches". I open the "Preferences - Units" menu. I approach the mouse and click on the selection box for units.... My screens go crazy suddenly and I get a BSOD...
The computer reboots, refuses to repair, complains it can't write on the disk. I launch UBCD, start TestDisk, it tells me my MFT and the mirror MFT are both completely messed up and the partition contents as well... Wow wow... What the...?!
Thank you Intel GFX system driver.
My home pc has developed a sudden issue and wont boot up anymore.
Stays stuck on the POST phase and am unable to get into BIOS , just stuck with a big asus logo and a message to press
F2 or Delete to get into BIOS but the system seems frozen as the keyboard lights are on but unresponsive while the
Mobo reads an error code A2
( the manual claims that to be an IDE error although am using only SATA)
Unplugging all usb doesnt change anything.
Unplugging all other sata ssd ,hdd and disk drives except the os drive changes nothing.
Unplugging the os drive results in the system complaining about no bootmgr
(As expected), that allows me to at least look at the BIOS but there doesnt seem to be anything wrong or out of the ordinary..
Booting from a live cd works fine
Booted from a pc boot repair tool and plugged in the os drive into one of the hot swappable sata ports shows me the all the files still there and accessible , check disk revealed nothing wrong. Can't plug in the os drive pre boot as that locks everything up again)
Tried to boot with a windows cd then do a start up repair but plugging in the os drive into the hot swappable sata doesn't work since windows can't see the drive.
Tried to swap the os drive with another one of exact same model filled witb random files resulted in no boot mgr error as expected
Struggled a whole weekend to fix it but alas no progress
Ah and the OS drive's warranty ran out 2 weeks ago 😑
Mobo asus p9x79 deluxe
Os ssd samsung 840 250 gb
No changes in hardware for the last year
No BIOS changes in over a year
I did notice some odd files like 0002Found
On the os drive when i was using the boot repair live cd tool, will bring the drive to
The office where i can get my hands on an ssd sata to usb caddy and take a snapshot of The files there for you guys to see.
Any ideas ? 😞5
exactly the day when holidays/vacations start, my laptop doesn't boot, nothing helps...
and only on january 8 we're back at work so i could take it to IT guys to repair it.... UGH! :(2
Been looking for a reason to change the OS.
Finally i think i broke the system beyond repair.
Currently using Ubuntu with Gnome.
I was thinking Manjaro would be cool.
Any suggestions? open to everything except windows.7
semi personal rant. looking to move to pheonix. anybody know any good jobs? Java and Web guy. also I'm a hardware junkie so if you got it or even repair shop jobs I'm good.6
I looked at my S7 edge and thought to myself... When am I fixing this goddamn screen?
It has been a few months now
And I'm not going to a shop if I can do it myself a lot cheaper.
I'm actually looking into how to repair it and what stuff I need, so far I know about b7000 glue to keep I water resistant after the repair, of course some prying tools, maybe a hair dryer, and of course the screen itself, anything missing or am I good to go?
Naturally, im gonna post rant if my repair fails...
Round 2 of trying to warranty repair a new monitor (Samsung CF791 ultrawide). Of course, it would die right after the 30-day return period with B&H so now I’m at the mercy of Samsung. Spent $70 on special packing to send it to Samsung so they couldn’t claim it broke during shipping. It came back to me in a box that looked like a homeless person had once lived in it. And it still didn’t work. I just sent it off again, this time in the same box they sent, as if to say “screw you for making me spend $70 for nothing”. I fully expect it to come back still not working. And I’ll demand a replacement. $700 monitors aren’t worth what they used to be.1
Das: So you are studying Computer Science?
Dad: Can you repair my TV?
Dad: Who is studying the technical staff?2
My family got our first computer when I was in the 1st grade and I really liked it a lot.
After some years I saw someone code and I was like "What's that?". After they explained me what they were doing I was totally hyped and started searching tutorial videos on how to do simple stuff on VB (this was in my 7th grade, I believe).
By the end of my 8th grade I was introduced to a Computer Engineer that lent me a RoR book and tried to teach me the basics.
(Fun fact: around this time I was doing a Habbo clone server with a friend of mine so that we could play with our friends without all the other people poking around).
In high school I took a Computer Technician course where I learnt stuff like VB, C#, PHP, MySQL, some basic CSS/HTML plus some hardware fundamentals.
After that course I tried to enter college and I failed on my first try, so I took a gap year were I worked as a dev for my family's computer repair shop. It was really a good experience to have time for myself while working on what I loved.
Now I'm on the 2nd year of a Bachelor in Computer Engineering (It's more about software than hardware actually), currently working with Java, C, IA-32 Assembly and PL/SQL. My goal is to get a Masters in Software Engineering after it.
I had to fix errors on my seagate 1tb expansion drive. Not only did it take 16 hours but also it failed to fix everything. I had to repair partition and format to ext4. NTFS errors can't be fixed on Linux. Fuck exFAT and M$.2
