Well guess what, I was coding with a friend of mine in a café .The waiter took our orders ..glanced at our screens( We were using Linux terminals ..fucking npm I swear) and then a few minutes later the manager comes up and says - ”Sorry ,but I am gonna have to ask you guys to leave " ..We were like wtf man ? Well apparently the staff felt that we were hacking using their WiFi .. God fucking dammit..typing on terminals is not Hacking .

Pain the ass sales guy walks into my office uninvited. Looks at one of my screens which has sftp copying a lot of files and spewing out each one. He asks what that "nonsense" is.

I politely tell him that it is all his sales data and I am deleting it. At which point I got up and went to lunch with no further discussion.

The next phone call I received was from my boss asking me to stop fucking with the sales people. I hope he learned to knock after this.

My boss has a camera in the office for "security" reasons and I happen to be just right under it, exposing my computer screens to it. So I wrote a script that sends me an email whenever the camera port is accessed.

A very sad side effect from my new job.

When I get home, I can't bear sitting behind a screen for longer than an hour or two.

I really want to keep on programming at home but I just can't put myself to it after work anymore :'(.

Christmas came early for my coworker. He wanted 6 monitors, IT is giving him three Samsungs in portrait.

Got my VisionTek Radeon 7750 today! Held my breath during the amd drivers installation on Linux (KDE Neon) but it all went well.

Rebooted, all screens (4 right now? upgrading to 6 soon) black.

Closed eyes, opened after 10 seconds and BAM, first display is working.

After some settings tweaking I've got 4 monitors up and running now, waiting for new hardware for two more.

Also waiting for a hex monitor stand ❤.

Since my coworker is on holiday and our desks are next to each other, I took his spot for this week and connected my secondary monitor to his setup

Well here is my new setup.
Left and center screens are connected to one laptop. Where I run my editors and terminals.
Rightmost is connected to another old laptop. This is for browsing and slack.
Using synergy to share mouse and keyboard.
What do you think of this setup? Any better way to do this?

I've uncovered the complot.

I clearly remember buying my first monitor, it was 15 inch, 1024x768. Then I went to a 19 inch 1680x1050 one, then 24 inch 1080p, then 27 inch 1440p...

Now I used two 32 inch 4K screens at work... and I come home, and the three 27 inch screens look a bit smallish, with the old 24 inch one being absolutely tiny on my desk.

It wasn't that tiny when I still owned the 15 inch screen? And my 5.5 inch phone doesn't feel as big as when I bought it either?

So the complot... All monitors slowly shrink over time, and they start shrinking faster when new monitors are brought into the household.

Number of screens is directly proportional to Productivity.

I have a certain condition with my eyes which i can compensate with glasses with prisms in it. Due to these prisms, all glowing colors become displaced in height. When i look on editors with syntax highlighting enabled, red is two millimeters behind the screen, green 4mm in front, blue 2mm in front, and gray exactly on 0. This is amazing, and sometimes is just watch this and wonder when holographic screens are becoming a thing. Id really wish for you to see somerhing like this.

You'd think that with OLED screens becoming the norm for smartphones people would start offering dark themes in their apps to save a bit of battery and prevent burn-ins, but NOPE there comes Google with their material design and everything is suddenly brighter than the sun, especially YouTube where 3/4th of the screen is static most of the time.

Definitely worth noting as well, since it caught me by surprise - the company-supplied laptop is a powerhouse. High-end i7 CPU, mid-to-high-end NVIDIA GPU, tons of ports, 1TB HD, 4K display, and 48 GB RAM. Yes, 48 GB. I am truly blessed, starting off my career with this. ^_^

Dev: Hi Guys, we've noticed on crashlytics that one of your screens has a small crash. Can you look?

Me: Ok we had a look, and it looks to us to be a memory leak issue on most of the other screens. Homepage, Search, Product page etc. all seem to have sizeable memory leaks. We have a few crashes on our screens saying iPhone 11's (which have 4gb of ram) are crashing with only 1% of ram left.

What we think is happening is that we have weak references to avoid circular dependencies. Our weak references are most likely the only things the system would be able to free up, resulting in our UI not being able to contact the controller, breaking everything. Because of the custom libraries you built that we have to use, we can't really catch this.

Theres not really a lot we can do. We are following apples recommendations to avoid circular dependencies and memory leaks. The instruments say our screens are behaving fine. I think you guys will have to fix the leaks. Sorry.

Dev 1: hhhmm, what if you create a circular dependency? Then the UI won't loose any of the data.

Dev 2: Have you tried looking at our analytics to understand how the user is getting to your screens?

Hey so this is more of an Android advice post rather than a rant

So it's​ to do with the app I'm working on, I want to make sure that the app images are working on different size screens and I was wondering if using the developer option for changing dpi a feasible option in terms of testing, so far I've tested for xxhdpi and xxxhdpi, and just now tested for xhdpi and so far so good.

But I can't seem to test for any smaller screens (240dpi and below)

people appreciate what they do more because they can clearly see the end product: beautifully designed ui, animated splash screens, clean colorful themes. even though it probably does squat other than to print statements.

Somehow I became a carpenter for the day and rebuilt and resized my desk to make it better then ever.....

This is my desktop setup reveal 1 of 2, I wasn't sure about the monitor stand (which is why I only got the 2-arm) but really love the extra space it gave me.

3 screens help a whole lot, hardware is a bit outdated but it works for at least low end VR development.

When I was a young boy and I was writing my first programs, I remember I was sad because they were fast, unlike other applications I used daily and admired, with their long splash screens and the hard drive constantly making noise whenever you performed an action. At that time for me, 'slow' meant 'serious'.

Been wearing sunglasses to the office for a few months now because I'm sick of bright screens, light themes of co-workers, the daylight outside that shines through the windows (I moved to another desk further away from the windows), the ceiling lights that are always on (even when there's daylight from outside, thanks boss) and people expecting me to have my eyes open in meetings when there's nothing to look at so now I can just close them and switch to "standby" while I'm still listening.

What the fuck is wrong with web designers these days?

Every fucking web page is white with black text. It's 2022, let's stop this paper bullshit and change everything to use colors that make sense on screens.

For fuck sakes, even monokai.pro is black on white. You know monokai, that dark colorful color scheme that most editors support. With a black background and white text.

I'm nursing the worst migraine in the world right now and all I want to do is smash people's faces into these shitty white screens.

It wouldn't be so bad if these fuckers would have a dark mode, but 80% of the documentation that I have to read doesn't support dark mode. Yeah I know about the browser plugins that do it for you, but I honestly don't trust any of them since most of them have been found to be spyware.

I've made a social dashboard to pull tweets/instagrams with certain hashtags for a big company event we have next week, which will be on all the big screens. We've been testing it this week on some of the screens. This morning, a Twitter spam bot posted a rather explicit picture of 2 girls having some fun, with one of the hashtags.. It was on the screens for 20 minutes before I realised. 😢

We work in an office where we must lock our computer screens because our screens may have confidential information on them, plus you could do things as the person without taking any blame (ie sending an email).
Anyways anytime someone forgets to lock their screen we always prank them pretty hard. The greatest thing we ever did was in our latest release we had our managers buy us drinks at the pub. Well our managers left to go to the pub and one of them forgot to lock their computers. So we downloaded an image of the blue screen of death and made it full screen, unplugged his mouse and keyboard for added effect, and locked his computer. He came in the next Monday and couldn't log in because his keyboard wouldn't work. He actually called IT to bring him a new keyboard and mouse... then he unlocked his computer and freaked out with the IT guy because there was the blue screen of death. Needless to say he got a brand new computer as well as a new mouse and keyboard.

I'd call it a win win?

Most of the time blue screens are caused by software or drivers. Not windows.

People who take photos of their screens instead of screenshots

Phones are getting bigger screens but also heavier. Why can't they just make a mobile phone that fits nicely on one hand and doesn't weigh like 1/4th of a kilo (phone+casing+screen protector).

When you laugh at people who crack their phone screens, and then you drop yours face down on asphalt and your screen shatters. Life is fair sometimes

Here's an issue I've been having with my PC for the past year;

*gets blue screen of death* (every 5 mins)
*takes out my second pair of ram cards, blue screening stops*
*waits a day, puts cards back in, has no more problems for 1-2 weeks*
*gets more blue screens*
*repeats*
If I leave the cards out, the system NEVER has any issues.
But, I can't play games smoothly on 4gb of ram.
Also, I can't afford new cards.

When you realize you had sharpening enabled in your monitor settings and you turn it off and shit just looks so much better...

I mean this is a necessary setting when using VGA but this monitor is connected via DVI!
Also some people just do not seem to notice this and leave this enabled on their screens.

I just broke 2 phones in two days... believe it or not... Both screens cracked and no swipe functionality survived...

CTO: In your view, would you find developing an ios app would be faster or at the same speed as an android dev?

Canidate: I've never developed on Android before, but I'd think it would be the same speed. We both need to make screens, views, and type code.

Seattle's light rail transit signs are just a full screen Chrome web browser. On another crash, I saw a Windows blue screen. Why would you pay for a Windows license just to run a browser that displays transit times?

Those GDPR nag screens actually are more damaging than useful. Nobody has the energy to jump through the hoops all different sites set up for you to opt-out of tracking. Yet you will constantly see those pages if you have opted out.

If you use some privacy extensions that block tracking cookies and stuff, you will keep getting those nag screens, because they have no idea whether you have seen it or not (because of no tracking)

So browsing the web has become the constant of:

1) Search something
2) Deal with nagscreens
3) See the page
4) Go to other page
5) Repeat from step two

I wonder what this will lead to? People are less likely to visit random pages and stick to ones they have account on? Will darknet become more popular? Will somebody design some standard way to get rid of this nagscreen wave?

Started a new job, spent a week staring at loading screens :|

Good god damn this fucking 'feature' of windows 10 grinds my fucking gears. I hit 'x' to stop seeing the visual distraction of the fucking green loading bar when the folders already loaded. Same thing with music. All I want it to do is open and play my fucking song.

Does it do that?

No instead it spends precious cycles updating fucking indexes or sprinkling crack rocks on the corpse of my cpu or whatever cycle fairies at fucking microsoft programmed it to do while wasting my fucking time.

The craziest deadline I've ever had is DEFINITELY to learn Android programming AD WELL AS iOS programming to make an app for a startup i currently still work with, and the time limit i had was a week. This week included learning both languages, and creating the 3 screens they had ready for me. I somehow managed to finish it!
Toughest week EVER, so far.

The new CTO promised us better coffee in his introduction meeting. Honestly felt pretty trivial and part of his used car salesman pitch to us.

Most useless premium laptop feature: touch screen.

For my new Lenovo I saved hundreds of dollars because I opted for the second best screen option. Lower resolution WQXGA (2560 x 1600) 165Hz, beacuse the 4K touch enabled fancy schmancy screen of my current Dell XPS 15 has barely been used. I keep Outlook open on it FFS, and I can probably count on one hand the number of times I have used the touch feature 😖

Come back from a week's vacation, 3 apps in review. Sit down, set up Xcode, pull latest changes. Run code for the first time, tap through two screens, find a critical bug and I have to reject all 3 apps and resubmit.

5 business days away and I found an obvious bug in 5 minutes.

Being changing apartment this days, I had to continue my personal project on the notebook but soon I realized that I can't, a project that requires full stack programming isn't bearable on a 1440p 14" screen, I need at least 2 screens 😫.

So I’ve requested images for the dark mode because the existing images are very bright and look bad when dark mode is enabled.

After a few days the designer says that it’s done and sends me the figma link.

And what do I see there? He added the screens but in dark mode with the same bright images! 😂

Despite the "blue screen" name, Windows fatal error screens sometimes can be also displayed with other background colours; in Windows 9x, the colour of the message could be even customised by the user.

Nobody enjoys loading screens. Just because the UI reacts on things, doesn't mean that the actual job gets fucking done.

Multi-Screen problem: So I need to run a VR headset with a laptop, and the laptop has only one hdmi connection. I don't have any extra hdmi adapters, so I cannot connect my second screen while working with the headset, which sucks...
but...
then it hit me...
there is an app called spacedesk which allows you to use your phone as an additional screen. I have a docking station for my phone so I can connect hmdi to it. On the first try the resolution was shit since it uses the default phone resolution. But the phone has Samsung Dex, which allows you to run everything full screen on your connected screen, so I can run the app within Samsung Dex and therefore will get full resolution.

And this works. It's kinda stupid and maybe a bit complicated, but it works. God, I love technology :D:D:D

When I just started programming I aways added fake loading screens and hard-coded login screens to my c# applications because it looked cool..

But I also always added an invisible panel to the top right so whenever you click that it would bypass the login screen.

I had to do that because 1. I will forget that password after 2 seconds, 2. I got no time for that login screen.

dfox? I think it would be nice to make the different tabs 'swipeable' so that you can swipe from one tab to another, it is especially handy for the peopke with thos super big screens :D

And at this moment am too afraid to socialize because my friends and family been doubting at my mental stability after seeing me talking to my PC.

Not really screensharing but kinda

Was in secondary school, I found out the computers had a team viewer client on them. Decided to download the full version to my usb and connect to my friends computer. We drew a bunch of stuff on the screens and eventually the teacher noticed a popup for team viewer in the corner of the screen and we got in trouble.

Just got to test the app from the frontend team... Oh God why!!
5 minutes, found 5 bugs (c'mon testers!!)

Worst (and now it's a rant) why do designers insist on working with big screens and don't test it on a standard screen? You know? Those typical screens your users are using?

So, it looks great in a 24" screen but the focus is terrible in a 15.6" screen... No time to fix it... What should I tell the users? Works better at 85% zoom out? -_-

If a frontend dev asks for screens, mocks, designs or whatever, all the company pushes for it and gives it to them, but if a backend dev asks for a set of input/output samples for a feature, the same people claim "its so hard to think about the cases"... Wtf are they thinking?

Haven't ranted for awhile but here it goes...
In a meeting with a front end user yesterday. They don't like the entry screens on our Oracle ERP system. They want us to provide them with a tool so they can create new entry screens to replace those they dont like. They want full autonomy over that tool and no interference from IT. Oh, and they want unfettered database access to the production data, including full ability to execute DML. I so wanted to say 'Are you high?'.

I use mainly linux at home, but I have to use Windows at work. I don't hate Windows, but at least once per day at work I accidentally try a keyboard shortcut from my Arch + i3 setup and either end up with some random program from the start menu running (Windows key used in i3) or I flip one of my screens sideways... Nothing detrimental, just enough to be aggravating.

I too want a two-screens setup for my coding :( right now I just have a 13 inch MBP.

I little more work upfront makes for a well thought out application and makes things like loading screens stupid simple.

Most frustrating? Anything involving IE, but that's a safe answer. No, my most frustrating experience (to this day) is getting tables to behave responsively on mobile screens. Not easy when the tables in questions contain dozens of columns with hundreds of rows and mostly rely on fixed widths to render the text the way the client wants. So if you have a client who doesn't understand how hyphenation and word break work, I know how you feel.

The title got as value "and another one", when I removed it it became "this is some comment" removing that resulted in the value "some text"

In places devRant Android App needs to clear activity stack... We see extra screens when we hit back, for example, when we modifiy a rant or a comment, we see the older one as well which is redundant.

After I was woken up in the morning by my friend that had a meeting nearby.
We went for coffee and as part of usual Wednesday I also decided to go to cinema to see Dr Dollitle ( not verry funny ).

I felt relaxed as everyone fucked off from me since Monday.

I was so happy of doing nothing after the movie I decided to try to make both frontend and backend for new application screens in finite time.

I could have waited for frontend developer to be back from his vacation but since I can also do it I decided to do it myself.

I did frontend part first with mock data and after finishing it before 2 pm asked if client will have time to discuss it. He didn’t so we decided I try to add real data and publish it on test environment.

Well those are mock up screens anyway so I decided to eat and smoke to chill but also try to work anyway.

I just finished backend for those screens and switched test environment to new branch.
Looks like they’re working for biggest client customers.

Usually it takes about a week or two to describe frontend developer what client wants but let’s see if I still have some frontend UX empathy left and can speed up development by couple of days.

When asking for help:
Sending screenshots or worse, use their phone to take a photo of their screens instead of copy pasting the code.

As if reading their code isn't hard enough already. Ugh

I see people posting pictures of computers (ATMs, ad screens, digital signs, instruments, etc) failing and instead showing some Windows function, update, or the desktop. Makes me wonder: WHY would you use Windows this way? Think of how many product keys you'll have to buy and how many systems you'll need maintain to show a stupid sign? There's GOT to be a cheaper way of doing things like this.

So glad i moved from a desktop PC to a laptop for development. I still have 2 workstations (one at home and one at work) with 3 screens, mechanical keyboard + mouse. But if i ever have to demo to a client/PM i just un-dock and take my laptop to them. Plus if the office is loud i just go to another room.

Had a handful of extra eyeglass wipes that someone gave me a week ago, so for lack of anything better to do while waiting on an OS install, I decided to give my laptop screen its only serious cleaning in the 6 years I've had it.

20 minutes later and it's already gotten its first fingerprint because I wasn't thinking and tried to wipe off a speck of dust.

I'm starting to remember why I stopped caring...

in my previous company , we used to create 4 custom ui states for just 1 screen in android app, and we would have task to create 3-4 new feature screens in 1 sprint (of 14 days) the states would be :

empty state : a state where data is not available. usually consisted of message, a graphic and some action button

data state : the usual state where data is filled on various elements

loading : a shimmer ui showing loading. it was supposed to be pixel perfect to that of the data state. it was basically a different xml, but with grey colored views instead of colorful. the tricky part would usually he to create the dynamic views

error/no connection state : as most of the screens couldbget api error or no internet error, this would be the screen for asking user to retry connection

all of these screens combined with their ui in xmls + kotlin code with barely any stuff being reusable , made the life incredibly difficult. however a lot of our customers would appreciate the interactivity of our app

doing these stuff again nd again , i had become trained to do all those 3-4 (x4) screens and the whole ui stuff in first 4 days of the sprint. but now i am in a company where i am getting passed on to managers after managers and getting tasks to change documentation in 1 week, i find those coding stuff incredibly tough.
