I laughed no stop.19 -
Today my oldest son is 8 years old and with pizza and cake we discussed how to hack his friends tablet, star Wars vs star trek and how to hijack wifi networks when friends parents won't give password.
And he told me how to evade detection and bypass the schools filters that he figured out alone.
I feel so damn proud.11 -
I don't know why @dfox , @trogus didn't want a username with underscore and I'm sure they must be having some valid reason for it. But how in fuck did this user have the guts to rate the app 1 star simply because it doesn't have a login with fb feature? I mean you can request for a feature but it's dumb of you to rate 1 star because it doesn't have a feature you want. This is true for any app not only devRant.

The Android guys at Google take care of the developers and their use case scenarios.
Like when they have to make an app that works on Jupiter.
Or on the Death Star.11 -
Maybe aliens haven't visited our solar system because we have one star...they would probably be looking for systems with 4 or 5 stars rating.4

FOR FUCK SAKE DO PEOPLE THINK BEFORE POSTING!!!
I got a 3 star review on my app and the user said if I implement feature x he will give me 5 stars, what is even more funny is he is requesting it for free!!
I hate this fucked up miserable world -.-28 -
My interviews to hire a Junior Dev will begin this week. Here's how its gonna go down.
Me: Star Trek or Star Wars?
My Supervisor: WTF? How is that relevant?
Human Resources: Let's see what he says.
Applicant: Battlestar Galactica
Me: Nice. I can deal with that.
Me: Tabs or spaces when indenting your code?
Supervisor: ... ?
Human Resources : ...
Applicant: Spaces.
Me: GTFO you imbecile! Next!27 -
Not truly a coworker, but a train conductor on my commute sees me coding all the time and chats with me about how he is teaching himself (I am also self taught). He makes me feel like a rock star for doing what I do 😎4

For fuck sake, one small bug and my app immediatly gets a 2 star rating. HOW ABOUT YOU REPORT THE FUCKING BUG TO ME SO I CAN FUCKING FIX IT. MY EMAIL IS IN THE GODDAMN DESCRIPTION. HOW FUCKING HARD IS IT TO SEND ME AN EMAIL INSTEAD OF A WORTHLESS RATING.13

Just read this in LinkedIn:
XYZ is one of our top star developers, with #speed as maybe her strongest super skill. She develops and ships new features at a rapid pace, at any time of the day (and night)…
This sounds super toxic for some reason. I’m triggered10 -

On trivia night at a local bar, the emcee had a "sculpt something from Star Wars out of Play Dough" contest. The prize was a plush BB-8 robot.

Hi guys, I am an Indie Game developer and I am launching a fully playable demo of my Space game STRIFE - Battle for the Southern Star tonight at 7pm GMT. Would love for my fellow Dev Ranters to check it out! Download will be available on the games Website below: www.pretzelstudios.co.uk/ at 7PM.22

While watching season 2 of Star Trek Discovery, it was nice to learn SQL is alive and well in the 23rd century. Also, that there are still idiots that don't defend against injection on a warp-capable spaceship with transporter technology.3

So I got accepted as a mentor for Udacity's Front-end web development Nanodegree program. Although I only 4.5 my first week, seeing full 5 star rating excites me more than anything.3

My son loves...loves Star Wars, so when Star Wars Battlefront (on the PC) went on sale, he jumped on it.
To my shock (I'm not a big gamer), the game is filled with hackers/cheaters that are able to give themselves 'god' mode, so they can kill in one shot and take no damage.
My son (and others in the game) keeps 'reporting' them, but it looks like an issue EA is ignoring.
My son keeps asking me "You're a programmer, can't you fix the game so they can't do that?"
Good lord...I could care less about russians "hacking" our election (moronic press, doesn't even know what that means), but hacking my son's favorite game!...hmm..wonder how long it would take me to drive to EA headquarters and find that SOB dev manager in charge?
I get it, cheaters are gonna cheat, but fix your friggin' code! Aren't you embarrassed!?
Don't give me any of that "we don't know how they are doing it..." nonsense. This is devrant, not <insert media outlet you hate>.13 -
Got another 5 star review on my app, which also, according to Play Console, now has over 300 downloads. Life is good. 😁27

I'm going to an engagement party tonight and the dress code is "smart casual", but with no jeans.
Look I'm a developer and I'm used to making my own dress code. To me that's smart casual. So I'm coming to this party with jeans, chucks, and a star wars t-shirt.5 -
Okay, I love programming - making my code better faster more readable^^ but I am not a nerd, I have no idea what's going on in star wars or star trek, I do not fucking care about Game of Thrones - I prefer to go out in some clubs and so... I hate it when people are so fucking surprised about my job and interests.
There are programmers who are not nerds live with it!21 -

So, for an assignment we have a task of developing an IT product for a business to solve one of their problems. One of the project development examples contains the following screenshot.
You can tell, from this screenshot that whoever made a screenshot of this example has no idea what they're doing.14 -

I recently started naming my devices in a certain scheme:
Laptop - Sagittarius (central black hole in the milky way)
Server - Sirius (brightest star visible from Earth)
Pi - Centauri (closed star system to us)
Any iot devices would be named like unnamed planets (i.e. Centauri A, Centauri B, ...)
Do some of you have cool/interesting naming schemes for your devices?17 -
Was looking for an unknown call blocker when I came across an app which says something like 'call blocker'. The first person in the reviews gave it one star with the text: it doesn't block sms.

So a non-tech colleague just walked in and asked if it was possible to find and replace "level 1" for a star in 200 .docx files. Humility... NASA discovered a star that has a strange drop in light level periodically. To the tune of 20%. NASA also determined that this was not due to a planet or naturally occurring body (Not sure how they determine that, but a lot of smart people work at NASA. So I am going with it for this discussion.) They have theorized that this object is evidence of a type 2 civilization mega structure, perhaps a Dyson sphere. The time it takes the light to get to us from this star is ~2000 years. So that civilization "had" a mega structure with the capability to harness the power of a star 2000 years ago. What are they doing now? Humbling, amazing, exciting, I hope we get to talk to them! (Also hoping they don't kill us all.) Really, I just want to see how fast their computers are. Yes, selfish wish.15

I've always fascinated by the night sky. Nevermind the mission to travel to Mars, the only matters now is how beautiful the night sky is but a lot of us don't get access to it because of light pollution. It's kinda sad that I need to go outside of the cities to see more of what the sky has to offer. I really wish everyone can see and appreciate it once in a while.1 -

I was copying data from a failing zfs drive with rsync and I noticed that it spent a long time on the file ~/.local/share/Baloo/index
du -h index showed a 500ish MB file which didn't seem large enough to take this long.
I recalled that du shows disk usage, not file size and since I was using zfs compression they could be quite different.
so I added -A for apparent size:
du -hA index and it comes back with 1.7E
The file was 1.7 exabytes...6 -

My problem with “The DevOps Handbook” is the same problem I have with Star Trek: The Next Generation: it gave me seriously unrealistic expectations that senior leaders can be convinced to abandon stupid ideas.
Or maybe it’s just that in my mid-to-late thirties my tolerance for manglement is as low as it’s ever been, and I’ve grown out of that idealistic kiss-ass stage of my career.

So I want to build myself a custom buttonbox for star citizen and warthunder, my hotas really doesn't have enough or fittingly placed buttons for either of those games. What would be the best approach for this?
My first thought was to take an arduino or some AVR chip on an USB connection and write a custom JoyStick driver but that would be a major pain on the buttocks.
Also would I buy an Arduino or go full custom stuff and buy some chip from TI and DIY the board completly?
On the other hand if I'm gonna tinker with stuff on my own time I propably should pick up an ARM processor so I get familiar with the architecture, but that's propably overkill.
But 8-bit AVR is so constrained so maybe if I want to expand and create something like an MFD the poor 8266 would propably just go up in flames.
Has anybody a better idea or knows some ready to rock board for this kinda stuff? Best case scenario with a Joystick driver or something?8 -

For the fucks sake why doesn't githubs mobile version show the stars/forks on a repo? 😠
If I'm on github on a phone it means I clicked a fucking link so I want to see how many stars the repo has or star it myself for later.
Without the star rating I might as well search a forum for libraries because the main reason I use github is so that I can see how many people are using the code so I know it's going to be maintained in the future.
It's such a big oversight on a otherwise fucking awesome service3 -

Well, guess what. Some famous brit flower boy singer or some shit was staying at a hotel a mere 20 or so minute bus ride away from where I live.

Not only did he plagiarize without recognition, I now also may or may not have to deal with the inevitable shrine that will be built by his fans on the spot where he met his unfortunate end, to gather around and ritually incinerate hardcore drugs in his honor, leaving behind crackpipes for him to smoke in heaven and that kind of commemorative jazz. Hmm, it might boost turism though, so it's not all bad.
Imagine the tour guide, maan. "Oh, and this is the spot where that guy from some dumbass boyband splattered against the ground after trying to beat Max Wright at his own game, RIP and please sir don't defecate on the plaque SIR DO N-- well, nevermind. OK, moving on... "
Anyway, I just wanted to publicize the fact that I didn't even know who the fuck he was until his untimely demise, may God have mercy on him, but it serves him right for trying to steal my arcane secrets.1 -
Is anyone here buying an Star Lite Mk III?
Any experiences with this brand?
The machine looks amazing for travels.7 -
Looking for some names I can use for servers/devices. Currently I am using planet names from Star Wars. The names of those planets in the outer rim I use for rootservers/devices which are not physically located in my home. Any other ideas/topics?4

So... I have 5 Raspberry Pi Zeros (no Wifi), one RPI Zero with wifi and one RPI 2 b+. I want to do home automation stuff with them. Any ideas?
I was thinking openhab, my only problem is that the rpi zeros dont have wireless connections.5 -
Every time I read a job description and they are looking for a "super star" or "rock star" etc I feel they are specifically trying to target the people that were the nerds and geeks in school that just wanted to be popular.1

So a couple of months ago I had some stability issues which seems to have caused Baloo go crazy and create an 1.7 exabyte index file. It was apparently mainly empty as zfs compressed it down to 535MB
Today I spent some time trying to reproduce the "issue" and turns out that wasn't that hard.
So this little program running on FreeBSD with a compressed (lz4) zfs dataset creates an 1.9 Exabyte large file, nicely compressed down to 45KB :)
#include <stdio.h>
#include <fcntl.h>
#include <unistd.h>
#include <sys/limits.h>
int main(int argc, char** argv) {
int fd = open("bigfile.lge", O_RDWR|O_CREAT, 0644);
for (int i = 0 ; i < 1000000000; i++) {
lseek(fd, INT_MAX, SEEK_CUR);
}
write(fd, " ",1);
close(fd);

I got my first proper start in programming through a side business operated by the same guy that was running a local makerspace. He had me learn basic git syntax and change some values in ionic.
From there I decided the best way to learn how to do this was write my own project in angular. From there I branched of with React and Vue.2 -
I think I'm a good hackhands expert.
If there's something I don't understand, I pause the session, and I do my research.
If a client is learning, I'll pause whenever they have a question, and explain in depth so they get the concept.
But the asshole that I worked with today just didn't understand how debugging works. I try one fucking thing that doesn't immediately work (after I already identified the root of his problem), and, as I PAUSED and start adding debugging for him, he ends the session and leaves first a one star review saying nothing, and then a three star review saying "couldn't fix my problem"
Fuck that guy. -

Grinded 5 days with another guy to finally get today our six linked star forge, shaper melted like a piece of butter in a steel furnace. Beautiful wrapup to a great lan party and now back to the real grind, php and c#. -
Wait till 11pm and put a Star Wars OST on. That puts me in a real development Flow State. I never get into that zone in the office because of distractions.

From time to time, there is time to code with imperial Star Wars music. Every time you have to have the feeling of building something bigger !

I just came across this strategy for the rate us section to avoid the lower ratings on the store.
When you click on rate us. It initially presents you with a 5 star with none filled up.
If you click on stars 1 to 3 then a feedback box pops up asking why I'm giving them less stars. Still letting to change them to 5 stars.
If I click on 4 or 5 stars then the app directly takes you to the play store listing where I need to press the 5 star again.
What do you think about this strategy?. Is it worth implementing??3 -
I made the Star Wars Crawl using vanilla web tech and show it on my website once the Konami Code is entered.
IT TOOK ME 2 HOURS, WHY WOULD I DO THIS? I always end up doing random mini-projects that amuse me but bring litteraly no added value to my work. 😂😭 -
Change of plans, I'll be streaming later tonight and it'll be star craft. I'm fucking horrible in comparison to other players but I do like talking. Give me of your thoughts on world events or scientific discoverys!

The Michelin star chef says to a fast-food line cook:
— In my restaurant, we don't use mayonnaise. Better even, I don't need mayonnaise, so as my fellow Michelin star chefs.
— You are idiot. We use mayonnaise and the burgers taste like crap without it.
— Perhaps it's because your recipes are trash and your products are made from waste materials?
— Look. I consulted with my fellow cooks from KFC, McDonald's, Burger King — all huge, billion-dollar companies, and they too are using mayonnaise. The whole world uses it. If you don't use mayonnaise, you can't cook tasty. End of discussion.
That's how I feel when someone defends unit tests. Matter of fact, I can't stand _both_ tests and mayonnaise. Coincidence?24 -
Since github doesn't have a good way to find new repositories..what does everyone think of my new d3 framework? feel free to make issues and star it if you like it! http:///www.github.com/hkelly93/...

Is it just me or is python community's dependency management a bit unreliable?
I just can't seem to easily install any python programs without missing dependencies. Updates have caused libraries to become incompatible, which in turn causes the application that used to work to just produce a stack trace.
Is this the state of python or am I doing something wrong.3 -
Do it's been about 19 days since my last update on my shitty internet and the upgrade that's meant to be in the pipeline for the current month.
Despite seeing people laying cable around my neighbourhood there's been no update on their website or in my letterbox.
It's halfway through the month and news outlets are reporting that the NBN has said that they:
Have 99% coverage
100,000 suburbs that aren't fully catered to
But, can't cater to a property that is in a relatively dense area less than 20km from a major city. -
Google app script is awesome ! Now I don't have to open shitty mails they get trashed and I don't have to star important mails which they get automatically everyday ;) still lot it can do...way to explore more ...

Reading the source of a message queue system I'm planning on extending.
I don't see myself as a rockstar programmer or anything but the construction of arrays from hash tables, sorting those arrays and then a nested for loop to find matches really irks me. Luckily not on the critical message processing path but the stats collection thread. There are mutexes in play though that would probably delay processing a little bit when stats are collected. -
Hello guys,
During this lockdown, I tried out new UI designs using Flutter which turned out really awesome📱.
You can find these designs on my GitHub:
github Chromicle awesome-flutter-ui (website username repository(i can't post URL yet))
please give a star⭐️ if you like them, any feedback is welcome3 -
My geekiest non-dev activity?
Recently its been playing Star Wars Battlefront (on PC). Its been a good SharePoint stress reliever, but hardly anyone playing anymore.
Will be getting back into 'video production' this summer converting decades worth of VHS tapes to digital for various family member's (lots & lots of editing and cleaning up). -
just rates devrant on google play and was surprised to see that few devranters behaved like QA team, finding bugs in devrant and gave as low as one star.3

Wish I would have tried harder at becoming a sports star. Society more readily accepts African American jocks than they do their African American geeks.1

lol god the new star wars shows are so inane
whole battallions of storm troopers just die, and it takes a small force of a few people to assault a whole cruiser lol and they win lol
its so entertaining though lol8 -
For testing, I added an override environment variable in some C# code so I can set it in the projects debug properties when I run it.
Turns out that while it's possible to do this in C++ projects, MS decided that they don't want you to do that for C# projects as there are other ways that they want to do it.
So it's not possible to modify your environment for C# projects within visual studio.
*Bangs head against the wall and surrenders to the Microsoft way of doing things*1 -
Has OSS Projects build systems become more complicated lately?
I took a stab at building concourse ci on FreeBSD. It being written in go, I expected it to be rather straight forward but no.
To "compile" the web UI assets, yarn (an alternative nodejs package manager apparently) was required. (Are js and CSS really compile targets now?)
Installed yarn and ran yarn build, it complained about lessc not being installed, so ran yarn install lessc which then told me that I was running an unsupported operating system.
I can compile the actual consourse binary just fine, but without yarn doing it's thing the assets required for the web UI does not get compiled in and therefore doesn't work properly.
Maybe I compile the web UI assets in Linux, and cross compile my FreeBSD binary...5 -
I've gone from a "no early returns" guy to a "return as early as possible to maintain the happy path indented as much to the left as possible" guy.
Looks so much neater now. -

No, really though. Star Wars is awesome and I can’t wait for that Lando movie -
Anyone playing Star Trek Online via Wine, PlayOnMac, CrossOver, or WineBottler? They yanked the official Mac installer in February and I refuse to allocate space for bootcamp or my Macbook Pro or a dual boot on my hackintosh. I got it working momentarily on crossover but something went wrong.
Damn you Cryptic Studios! -

Someone needs to make a clip of Obiwan getting cut down by Darth Vader. Then following after Obiwan is re-materialized on a transporter deck in Star Trek.

All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by... plus UltraEdit, Directory Opus, and a command prompt!

The top reason was probably the people I surrounded myself with. I always loved computers and, as a result always joined cool tech-based clubs when I heard about them. The teachers there were also Devs and could do some awesome things with the code they wrote.
Hence me downloading eclipse and everything after... -
So, I'm part of a pretty nice project with an awesome community. Being open source it didn't have really strict standards, evidence of this being one of the latest merges to master.
The latest merge breaks the project. It received approval because of some minor changes that were easily overlooked. Although they should have tested the build nobody bothered.
Now that it's been merged I've rebased several of my own requests I am unable to test them until the original author makes a fix.2 -
Hello world!
I have a question about which the best solution to send message verify to number phone in WordPress??🤔10 -
ChatGPT is a manifestation of how characters from Star Trek TNG++ used to pair with the ship's computer.
Sure, sometimes the computer became sentient and tried to kill everyone. But they dealt with it, ya know? -

I want it free if there are available 😅😂3 -
I’ve been reading “Agile Testing” by Lisa Crispin. The list of tools that I learn about and go on to star it on GitHub is never-ending! Are you expected to be proficient in each and every one of these?
-
hmmmmmmmmmm
Gonna have to be instrumental music, be it movie soundtracks(Star Wars <3) or whatever randy dandy music I have, like Sabaton.
Also my never ending promise to myself to finally install a new Linux distro on my main machine with KDE Plasma.. dat stuff gooooood
