I broke up with my girlfriend today
She asked me a help of a some real time issue.
What she actually want to accomplished is to copy content through mouse from one laptop, unplugged the mouse, plugging in the mouse to other laptop and trying to paste content there.22 -
Been 2+ years and still getting +1s on it. Either people are digging up their feeds too deep or devRant's content discovery is just too good. xD13

How reading E-Mail is hard:
Me:
"Dear client,
please send the pictures for content A and Content B.
We also found content C in your spreadsheet. Do you want content C to be uploaded? Please us where to place it.
Regards
Me (who does not consider this a difficult text)
"
Client:
"Hello. Please find attached the pictures for A"
Me:
"Dear Client,
Thank you for the pictures for A.
What about the pictures for B?
And what about that content for C?
"
Client:
(no answer)
Desperate Me:
(Looking at the attachment and finding pictures for A and B)
!!@**! :(
Reluctant Me:
"Dear Client,
Please look at the new iteration <here/>
And by the way.. what about that content C?"
Client:
"Thanks and find the images for Content C attached."
Extremely fatalistic and desolate Me:
"Well thank you. Where shall we put it then?"
Client (answer to the unanswered mail above)
"Thank you. Please don't forget to put in C."

Well duh. If content changes with every request caching is probably not a good idea...9 -
When I was in college I built websites for my friends but they never gave me any content. Now, 15 years later I build websites and applications for my clients, and they never give me content. I should have seen the signs.5

I do not like it when a client can't come up with content for the design they approved... however , I do have a great deal of fun writing temporary content...7

I created an Android app for a client. An intern at his company who is responsible for content updates sent me this email:
Hi,
I'm including a photo of an Android displaying the app on screen, in our latest marketing email.
Will the Android's screen in the photo update itself if I update the content of the actual app?
Best,
Intern

$content .= "TEARS OF TIM BERNERS LEE";
$content .= "<table>HE FOGOT THE FUCKING '/'";
and dozens more of these lines...
and the whole piece for ALL 3 FUCKING LANGUAGES...
Thanks for writing the fucking backend stuff, it is better to rewrite the whole piece.19 -

css quick maffs
so you did this:
.foo:hover {
transform: scale(1.1);
}
and now ugly scrollbar is there when the element is scaled.
No, don't do overflow: hidden. There's a better way. Instead, do this:
.container {
padding: 1rem;
box-sizing: border-box;
}
the element total width is calculated based on the width of its content. That's true unless you specified width and height explicitly (if you did so, you're a doofus, I'm sorry).
Scaling makes content somewhat larger. With border-box, paddings work differently with the total width.
By default, if you set width to say 100px, and paddings are 20px, total width will be 140px — it's your 100px of content plus two paddings of 20px. width property set the width of the content, not the total width.
With border-box, width property sets the total width. So if you set width to 100px and paddings to 20px, total width would be 100px, just like you set it, and content will be 60px wide — it's 100px minus 20px times two.
The key part is it doesn't end with explicit width. The algorithm remains. When some node is rendered, its total width is calculated. When you use border-box, the total width will stay the same even if your content grows by some value that is less than your paddings. So, your content was 100px, you scaled it, and it became 110px. Well, then that extra 10px will be subtracted from your paddings, and they will be 15px each instead of 20px.
No more ugly scroll bar. Yaaay!

5) client doesn't provide the correct info.

This new trend of platforms spamming with content discovery fucking suck. Nobody wants to follow multiple profiles with the exact same fucking content, especially when most of them are just people jumping on the bandwagon with more generic content and nothing to make it distinguishable. Also if 10 million people saw something on your platform, the it's pretty fucking sure already been posted and shared on every single platform out there, why the fuck would you still keep recommending it weeks or even months later?
I know spamming users with random (statistically more engaging) content leads to improved customer engagement as people sooner or later click these thing out of curiosity or boredom, but eventually they get tired of it altogether and leave for good. What happened to Netflix will also happen to YouTube, Instagram, and all other platforms unless they significantly improve the balance between content discovery and content continuity (i.e. the content each user follows and is coming back for).4 -

I released an Android lib on JCenter.
So far so good. What I didn't realize was that I had a terrible bug related to a content provider.
Since I was using the ContentProvider to make my CursorLoader work, if someone installed an app with my lib, you couldn't install another one with it because it would conflict the providers.
I had to quickly find a solution and dispatch a new release. -

Weekend thought: Is Youtube becoming more like Facebook?
So I'm at work today and my coworker is watching YouTube. And by watching YouTube I mean watching very "mainstream" content like Mojo top 10 lists and Good Mythical Morning. When he's not doing that he's watching Twtich streaming for 6-8 hours a day.
I've noticed that I watch YouTube a lot less than I used to because there's less content I find interesting anymore. And I wonder if it's because the platform's algorithm for showing content has been skewed so much away from original content. I'm not saying that YouTube was a bastion of fantastic content 5 years ago, but in my opinion it was easier to find good content over the click bait that I feel plagues it these days.
I might be feeling this because a number of channels I've enjoyed have had to turn to patreon to get money from the demonetization of advertisements over the past year. It hasn't affected viewership but it does affect what I think YouTube "wants" the users to watch.6 -
Why is there so much stuff to learn and know? I just want to be able to do everything myself in a week.8

This is why you shouldn’t try to redefine words and deviate from accepted word definitions.
Dev team/product decides to put the word [content] in a JIRA ticket’s title. To dev, this means “it’s a CMS change and no code push required.”
A new marketing team comes on board along with a few “website manager” type folks. They start putting [content] in JIRA ticket titles, but they think [content] means content change and their requests do require a code push instead of a CMS update.
First time it happens, I comment on the ticket and tag the reporter. I explain what [content] actually means for us. Most importantly, I explain that it tells us how to prioritize the request and how to deploy the changes.
Happens again. And sometimes they’re requesting changes for the next day when we only do weekly releases. I suspect they didn’t believe me because I’m lower in the chain. It’s also easy to forget because we are using “content” to mean something different here. I ask my boss does [content] still mean what I think it does? It does. 😕
I just decide to comment on the ticket and let them know the request requires a deploy and that’s why I’m changing the title of the ticket. They might also have to wait until the weekly release.
Overall, a bunch of lunacy all around.11 -

I'm overloading my brain with information crap everyday. I consume too much content such as reading blogs on dev.to, medium.freecodecamp.com, and simpleprogrammer.com. I have a fear of missing out on information. Whenever I discover some topic from something I've read, I keep searching to find relevant content. It's a rabbit hole!
On YouTube, whenever I discover a channel that I like because of that one good video that provided value to me, I subscribe and aim to watch all their videos. I had to download a Mark Watched YouTube Videos script from Greasyfork so I could filter them out properly and to fix this obsessive addiction.
What disorder is this? Have you been through this? How did you fix your life?3 -

UX and Game Design: "Keep It Simple" Is Stupid.
Presentation, Content, and Structure
Often when designing a UI, I stumble across blogs and articles that discuss it and focus far too much on the structure. Wordpress is terribly guilty of this and I see it fairly often in the game industry.
In web design you might use flexbox for a content-centric design and not worry too much about the layout, or css grid if structure seems important. But the broader question is why? Why is structure important and why is it wrong to focus on structure over content?
First, structure *comes* from content. Even where over many years, we've taken certain kinds of content, be they the various genres of games, or the sundry type of websites or apps, we've learned to take all the various patterns and categorize them, to extract the commonly repeating idioms into what we call structure.
But if you're experienced, and a fan of UI design in general, then I bet you that you can name a number of counter-examples, those that broke the mould, or broke the 'rules' of good design and still somehow worked. And that follows *because* structure is derived from content. This is the same reason idioms, patterns, and best practices change over time, as we codify exceptions into their "own" rules, new best practices emerge which mostly everyone follows, and then yet more exceptions break them. And so it goes.
So we see content before structure. But isn't there something to be said of style? Why yes, there is.

Two reviewers two comments on the same content, both comments conflict with each other and I'm required to apply both, how exactly?2

When you've fully set up a CMS for a project and you still get messages asking to edit the content... 😕3

I want your opinion about designing a web.
What is better for you?
1) A web page with 2 files (e.g. page1.html and page2.html), so the client must send a request for each content.
2) A web page with 1 file (e.g. page.html) with all the content in divs with 'display: none' and switch between them wth javascript.
Thanks!13 -
How do you deal with clients continuously rewriting the content for a static website and every time you deploy they rewrite it again?
Some pages of this site I'm currently working on are on their 6th version just for written content changes!
I wanna drive over there and punch them every time they do.5 -
when you view the source of a page and you see the whole damn content stuffed in a <table>...
WHY?!!5 -
IMHO, the material design floating button (just like the one used here) is horrible. Why would a control ever hide the content behind it such that the user must move the content. I dislike it intensely and think it is just really bad ux.2
-
If you want this app better, stop posting crappy content or content you have to end up explaining.
Simple, isn't it?3 -
That feel when you have a deadline for a website project which requires content from someone in the team and after months of asking for the content they give it to you a few days before a demo day and guess what?
They freaking forgot to send you everything needed so some of the images are blank and hidden and one of the pages has dummy text.
Even the higher ups chasing him, didn't help.4 -
So -site:google.com -site:huffpost.com still fails to block Huffpost* AMP content.
*and so on for any publisher -

I recently started a Java blog
Right now i just wrote some blog entries with rather small content. But I am not sure if in-depth entrys would be more valuable. Do you prefer blogs with small pieces of information oder in-depth content?

When you build a custom CMS for a client and they don't even use it... why the hell am I (the dev) entering their content?!
And for fuck's sake... at least give me the right content in the first place instead of having me redo it 3 times!4 -
People who use word-break: break-all on body paragraph content need to stand in a narrow, claustrophobia-inducing room, cut off their left hand, and hold it up against the right-hand wall, while holding the stump of their left arm against the left wall. That's what it feels like to read break-all in longform content.

the text in the grey-ish rectangles says "Advert"
the text in brackets above the bottom grey-ish rectangle says "(Content continues below advert)"
and yes, the thing in the middle is the actual whole content, there's no continuation below that non-advert

The UML specification book satisfies OCD quite well I'd say.
Page 59, the actual content hasn't started yet, but I'm happy: "Within each clause, there is first a brief informal description of the concepts described in that clause. The clause is then
split into sub clauses, each describing a coherent set of concepts that constitute a portion of the formalism specified by
the clause. Each sub clause is then split into Abstract Syntax, Semantics, Notation, and Examples.

I created a comprehensive, fundamental guide to privacy:
- it's eternal — new apps come and go, but while the internet and our computers are the way they are, the guide works and needs no adjustment;
- it's permissive — you don't need to live in the woods. Yes, some services should not be used as-is, but you may still enjoy their content;
- it's easy — yes, it requires your typical content consumption to be somewhat altered, yet there are no taboos.
Content and medium aren't the same. Instagram stories have fundamentally nothing in common with Instagram itself.
There is no inherently bad or harmful content.
My search for privacy is over. Not anymore is it an uphill battle. Yes, I can do a finite number of things to achieve privacy once and for all. No, this doesn't limit my content consumption.
I'm going to write a complete essay. Stay tuned.1 -
When will be the moment in time when the majority of internet content is generated by artificial intelligence rather than humans?

Anyone know of any easy ways to pipe content into a .NET based web framework? Web team at work uses a Windows stack, but all the tech I use runs on Linux and trying to find a good way for my team and I to create content without stepping on the toes of the IT folks.2

I really look forward to getting rid of end user and front end crap!
Just wasted 3 hours because of a bug report of a client stating, that "the printouts always have a useless empty page after the desired content".
Well, yeah. There actually is content on the site that's meant to be printed.
After 3 hours of fine-tuning and debugging I found out, that the content is in A4 (European default paper format: 210x297mm) and the customer tried printing in some weird ~219.9x279.4mm format. Apparently that's the US 8x11" letter format.

Hi fellas, I am having problems to play widevine content in electron. I am trying to convert ember-app to electron app. Except widevine content everything works great, Version info are:
Shaka 2.02
Electron 1.4.13(Chromium 53)
Electron Packager 8.4.0
Widevine v1.4.8.903
I used http://electron.atom.io/docs/... docs. In order to check my player i load shaka-demo app.
I included widevine like this
``` app.commandLine.appendSwitch('widevine-cdm-path', path.join(__dirname, ./widevine/1.4.8.903/_platform_specific/linux_x64/libwidevinecdmadapter.so)); app.commandLine.appendSwitch('widevine-cdm-version', '1.4.8.903');
```
Also added plugins: true. When i load mainWindow.loadURL('https://shaka-player-demo.appspot.com/...'); to play widevine content it's disabled. I have tried navigator.plugins still can not play widevine content2 -
I've been thinking about creating an Open Source functions-as-a-service Content Management System. Reason being is that this would allow the community to cut down on costs for content sites that they run by using something like AWS Lambda where you would only have to pay for what you use. Thoughts?1

How can AWS cancel Parlor's account but not MeWe's? Aren't they almost identical in terms of content?20

Just getting on the loop with all this drama with Tren Black, TechLead and JomaTech after TheQuartering made a video about it. I just unsubscribed from TechLead YouTube channel because I think that move of deleting bad reviews of your products or issuing Copyright strikes at YT video that criticize them is a really shitty move.
On the other hand, I asked here wherever I should start doing content on YouTube related to software development in English or Spanish and after seeing all that drama it made me wonder if eventually my name would get drag into some of that jaja, oh boy...2 -
Only just got around to listing to the devRant podcast #1 this morning. DHH is a little potty mouth 🙃
Excellent content none the less! I kind of agree on DHH's stance on project managers.
On a side note, what other podcasts do you guys listen to? I quite like most of the content from jupiter broadcasting. LAS and Coder Radio specifically. -
If someone tries using "multipart/form-data" as only content type for their PUBLIC API ENDPOINTS again I am going to find them and choke them to death.
And if your documentation says you are using something else (application/x-www-form-urlencoded) I am doing it twice.
JSON apis should be standard.
EDIT: I had to fire up BurpSuite proxy, after almost an hour I accidentally switched the body type - voilà1 -
StackOverflow, if the community's peer review process is as good as you claim, why would you have to fear any AI / chatGPT generated content after all?
Notice today: "We do not currently allow content pasted from ChatGPT on Stack Overflow; read our policy here."6 -
I just wanted to say that most rants I saw today were great. Loads of original pics and good stories. This, while others think devRant is becoming more and more of just a repost forum. Any thoughts?1

Question for the Web Devs: What is your go-to CMS for Web Content Management? Was looking for a small project and wanted to learn to build Websites where the owner would occasionally add or update content on his website3
-
5% of the content on the internet has cultural value and the rest is just pure trash. 4.9% of that quality content is basically instructions on how to build things for the internet. (I didn’t really fact check those numbers - but I’m pretty sure I’m correct)9

Is it unprofessional to have my web application and my static content hosted through different ports (like having the static content on 80, but when it posts to my database it calls different random ports)?2 -
Does anyone know of any good examples of server and client implementations of a java rest service using cxf and multipart content?

I have an issue that I just can't shake and wondered if anyone had any insight.
I'm currently working for a company that is going through a ruff patch when it comes to google rankings dropping off.
I'm the developer who is rebuilding his sites, I've told him that his site is very flat as in no content and he need to start writing articles within his industry.
No buying strength at all just a catalogue of products categorised.
But the guy doesn't get it and insists in spending money on PPC Google shopping which gets him a 83% bounce rate.
I keep going on and on at him how he is doing to much advertising and not enough content marketing but he just doesn't get it.
What would you do ?.1 -

In other words, they have just introduced a breaking change that hides CMS content elements that were expected to be visible publicly to everyone.
