Github education: You get a bunch of cool free stuff if you are a student.
Intellij: You get all of their IDEs for free if you are a student.
Adobe: You get a discount but you still have to pay 20€ per month as a student.
This is why I love programming and the whole community around it.11
I’m kind of pissy, so let’s get into this.
My apologies though: it’s kind of scattered.
For @Root? Fucking never.
Maybe if I wanted to be a business major my mother might have cared. Maybe the other one (whom I call Dick because fuck him, and because it’s accurate) would have cared if I suddenly wanted to become a mechanic. But in both cases, I really doubt it. I’d probably just have been berated for not being perfect, or better at their respective fields than they were at 3x my age.
Support being a dev?
Not even a little.
I had hand-me-down computers that were outmoded when they originally bought them: cutting-edge discount resale tech like Win95, 33/66mhz, 404mb hd. It wouldn’t even play an MP3 without stuttering.
(The only time I had a decent one is when I built one for myself while in high school. They couldn’t believe I spent so much money on what they saw as a silly toy.)
Using a computer for anything other than email or “real world” work was bad in their eyes. Whenever I was on the computer, they accused me of playing games, and constantly yelled at me for wasting my time, for rotting in my room, etc. We moved so often I never had any friends, and they were simply awful to be around, so what was my alternative? I also got into trouble for reading too much (seriously), and with computers I could at least make things.
If they got mad at me for any (real or imagined) reason (which happened almost every other day) they would steal my things, throw them out, or get mad and destroy them. Desk, books, decorations, posters, jewelry, perfume, containers, my chair, etc. Sometimes they would just steal my power cables or network cables. If they left the house, they would sometimes unplug the internet altogether, and claim they didn’t know why it was down. (Stealing/unplugging cables continued until I was 16.) If they found my game CDs, those would disappear, too. They would go through my room, my backpack and its notes/binders/folders/assignments, my closet, my drawers, my journals (of course my journals), and my computer, too. And if they found anything at all they didn’t like, they would confront me about it, and often would bring it up for months telling me how wrong/bad I was. Related: I got all A’s and a B one year in high school, and didn’t hear the end of it for the entire summer vacation.
It got to the point that I invented my own language with its own vocabulary, grammar, and alphabet just so I could have just a little bit of privacy. (I’m still fluent in it.) I would only store everything important from my computer on my only Zip disk so that I could take it to school with me every day and keep it out of their hands. I was terrified of losing all of my work, and carrying a Zip disk around in my backpack (with no backups) was safer than leaving it at home.
I continued to experiment and learn whatever I could about computers and programming, and also started taking CS classes when I reached high school. Amusingly, I didn’t even like computers despite all of this — they were simply an escape.
Around the same time (freshman in high school) I was a decent enough dev to actually write useful software, and made a little bit of money doing that. I also made some for my parents, both for personal use and for their businesses. They never trusted it, and continually trashtalked it. They would only begrudgingly use the business software because the alternatives were many thousands of dollars. And, despite never ever having a problem with any of it, they insisted I accompany them every time, and these were often at 3am. Instead of being thankful, they would be sarcastically amazed when nothing went wrong for the nth time. Two of the larger projects I made for them were: an inventory management system that interfaced with hand scanners (VB), and another inventory management system for government facility audits (Access). Several websites, too. I actually got paid for the Access application thanks to a contract!
To put this into perspective, I was selected to work on a government software project about a year later, while still in high school. That didn’t impress them, either.
They continued to see computers as a useless waste of time, and kept telling me that I would be unemployable, and end up alone.
When they learned I was dating someone long-distance, and that it was a she, they simply took my computer and didn’t let me use it again for six months. Really freaking hard to do senior projects without a computer. They begrudgingly allowed me to use theirs for schoolwork, but it had a fraction of the specs — and some projects required Flash, which the computer could barely run.
Between the constant insults, yelling, abuse (not mentioned here), total lack of privacy, and the theft, destruction, etc. I still managed to teach myself about computers and programming.
In short, I am a dev despite my parents’ best efforts to the contrary.35
Electronics store clerk: "Can I help you?"
Me: "Good afternoon sir. I'm a developer and lifelong PC gamer. I received a second hand PS4, and might buy a next gen console at the end of the year. People tell me that in front of this soft wide desk chair people call a "couch", you need some sort of large computer monitor to enjoy console gaming"
Clerk: "Yeah, we sell TVs. What TV do you have now?"
Me: "I don't own a TV. I just want a huge 4K computer display with a good response time, excellent refresh rate, and great contrast"
Clerk: "OK so this is an entry level 55" smart TV. It's 120hz, QLED, has full array local dimming. It's great for gaming. It's €1000. We also have this LG OLED smart TV for €1200, which is a step up in terms of contrast and response time..."
Me: "Wait... Smart TV? No, I don't want a TV with an operating system. I want a computer display."
Clerk: "There aren't a lot of big computer displays. We have this ASUS ROG 55" computer monitor. It's also 120hz. Very similar response time, but the brightness and contrast aren't as great, it's edge-lit"
Me, trying really hard to make out the contrast differences under ugly fluorescent lights of the store: "So it's a worse big couch display, without smart OS. How much is it?"
Me: "So what you're saying is that while the displays are similar or even better, the operating system on all these TVs is so incredibly bad, you have to give €2500 discount for people to even buy it?"31
"full stack" means "you'll be doing everything from gathering client requirements through data architecture up to the UI design and of course implementing all of it"
"backend" means "you'll be coding everything from database through server-side code and client-side code including html and css"
"we need you on-site all day every day" means "we have no idea how and why we should use repositories with remote access despite being a company developing an internet app, and we don't trust that you would be working anyway"
"interesting challenging projects" means "the same boring crap as every other company, running on an incredibly botched and dezorganized codebase".
"competitive pay" means "actual pay is around 1.5 times the minimum allowed pay, and everything else is being siphoned off into (stupid and useless) 'benefits' like massage and fitness discount coupons"
"friendly collective having fun at numerous company events each years" means "it is mandatory for you to participate on our weekend drinking retreats but you'll only find out when we fire you because you're 'not a team player' after you refused to participate on those"9
My first project and the reason I learnt to code. I was a manager at a supermarket and wanted a discount card for the old people so just wouldnt have to walk to the tills.
First I wrote hello world, then a calculator and then a loyalty card system for my store. It was wildly successful and the fact my scrap code even ran is a miracle. Shortly after launching it in my store I met a like minded investor with an actual dev team hooked it up to a web service and I spent the next 3 years rolling it out nationally to 480 stores. It's still running today.6
Wow, what a bunch of weirdos waiting for the Apple store in my city to open. Isn't it perverse to queue up for hours just to be able to BUY a product? It's not like you get a discount or anything. No - just because... I don't know... Why don't you wait a day or two longer or just simply buy it online? This cult-like obsession to be the first with the newest product can't be healthy for our society.27
Last Friday, because of a stupid ass shitty engineer who constructed a footpath in the most shitty way I Sprained my ankle in one of the dents in it. But the story about this pizza picture is that my friend and I had planned a trek on a Saturday which obviously got cancelled. He saw how pissed I was he went online on Domino's website, changed input in a JSON file on one of Domino's wheel spinner which got me the maximum discount available there and I bought the pizza. He did that multiple times. Some Relief there. 🥂🍕
Ok, so I have a SAAS website where users pay a daily fee to use my platform as there fundraiser landing page.
A new client comes, asks for a discount, and got a 50% off because his brother was a previous client.
Him: Can you please add a list of the days of the year so a donor can donate a day?
Me: Sure, sounds like a good idea, and will probably take me about a week to implement with testing etc. And so I want $$ (hourly rate * one week) for the work.
Him: Don't bluff me I understand a bit in programming, it shouldn't take you more than an hour, and I am paying you, so you should do it for free.
Me: Ok, here is a fair deal, since you understand in programming, build it for me, I give you two weeks and I will pay you double what I am asking for.
Him: I don't understand enough to do it myself, I just estimated how much work it is.
Me: Forget about it, if you want me to build you this feature, you pay. If not you can go to my competition happily.
Who needs bad clients at all?
Why do they think they know everything?
And why don't they understand that time is money?5
Client: We are really happy with your work and enjoy working with you!
Me: Thanks, happy to hear that! I appreciate our collaboration as well.
Client: Great! So... can we get a discount?
Why do people think that being nice also means being cheap!?14

So a hosting site popped saying here is some discount. I inspected element. Found the script and got an additional 70% off.3
CEO: I've got a great idea to entice users, we increase our prices 20% and give 20% discount.
Oh god, please tell me you're not serious.16
It were around 1997~1998, I was on middle school. It was a technical course, so we had programing languages classes, IT etc.
The IT guy of our computer lab had been replaced and the new one had blocked completely the access on the computers. We had to make everything on floppy disks, because he didn't trusted us to use the local hard disk. Our class asked him to remove some of the restrictions, but he just ignored us. Nobody liked that guy. Not us, not the teachers, not the trainees at the lab.
Someday a friend and me arrived a little bit early at the school. We gone to the lab and another friend that was a trainee on the lab (that is registered here, on DevRant) allowed us to come inside. We had already memorized all the commands. We crawled in the dark lab to the server. Put a ms dos 5.3 boot disk with a program to open ntfs partitions and without turn on the computer monitor, we booted the server.
At that time, Windows stored all passwords in an encrypted file. We knew the exact path and copied the file into the floppy disk.
To avoid any problems with the floppy disk, we asked the director of the school to get out just to get a homework we theorically forgot at our friends house that was on the same block at school. We were not lying at all. He really lived there and he had the best computer of us.
The decrypt program stayed running for one week until it finds the password we did want: the root.
We came back to the lab at the class. Logged in with the root account. We just created another account with a generic name but the same privileges as root. First, we looked for any hidden backup at network and deleted. Second, we were lucky: all the computers of the school were on the same network. If you were the admin, you could connect anywhere. So we connected to a "finance" computer that was really the finances and we could get lists of all the students with debits, who had any discount etc. We copied it to us case we were discovered and had to use anything to bargain.
Now the fun part: we removed the privileges of all accounts that were higher than the trainee accounts. They had no access to hard disks anymore. They had just the students privileges now.
After that, we changed the root password. Neither we knew it. And last, but not least, we changed the students login, giving them trainee privileges.
We just deleted our account with root powers, logged in as student and pretended everything was normal.
End of class, we went home. Next day, the lab was closed. The entire school (that was school, mid school and college at the same place) was frozen. Classes were normal, but nothing more worked. Library, finances, labs, nothing. They had no access anymore.
We celebrated it as it were new years eve. One of our teachers came to us saying congratulations, as he knew it had been us. We answered with a "I don't know what are you talking about". He laughed and gone to his class.
We really have fun remembering this "adventure". :)
PS: the admin formatted all the servers to fix the mess. They had plenty of servers.4
LMAO dude tried to scam me and I got the their team by their balls.
So as y'all know my Earphone cables got cracked. So I reached their official Audio Technica email seeking support.
They redirect me, based on my location, to a local "authorised" dealer by looping them in the email. Note the point that my contact information was in first email and now only Audio Technica and said dealer has my details.
The dealer's shop is in an area known for scams and the entire market is computer hardware market selling counterfeit goods.
So now I got a call in the afternoon.
Scammer: Floyd you looking for a cable?
Me: Yeah, I am.
Scammer: It'll cost you 2K.
Me: Whoa? Last I checked it was 1K.
Scammer: Plus 18% State tax and 18% Central tax
Me: Really? Shouldn't there be only single 18% tax (9% each)?
Scammer: And additional service charge of 500?
Me: What the actual fuck? I am buying a cable. Not getting anything repaired.
Scammer: That's the company policy. Cannot change that.
Me: Cool. By when can I get the delivery?
Scammer: No, you'll have to come and collect. Delivery will cost you 250 extra.
Now at this point I became a bit alert.
Scammer: You can trust me, I am the India head of Audio Technica.
Me: wow really? Such an honour to talk to you good sir. Can you give me some discount?
Scammer: If you purchase without bill, I can slash off taxes and give you original product but without warranty and also arrange free delivery for you.
Me: Awww so kind of you.
Scammer: Make sure you tell me within 30 minutes else prices will rise.
Me: What? Why? Are we trading in stock market or some shit?
Scammer: No that's company policy.
We disconnect. Now I forgot to record the conversation which was my biggest mistake.
I immediately drop an email to AT notifying them about this. They forward the email to said dealer and I get a call from some one new.
Now he said there's some "misunderstanding".
I said, only 2 people have my number. AT will not scam selling stuff without bill.
So definitely your guy called. I threatened them to file a consumer forum complaint.
He said it wasn't from his team. Then it means they leaked my contact information and someone tried to scam me. So I said this is even more serious and I should register a police complaint and reach out to cyber cell.
Dude was next to tears and his voice started shaking.
He said he'll ship the product for free and I can make the payment only after I am satisfied with the quality and begged for mercy.
Lmfao.. I asked him to drop me an official email with the solution and make sure to copy AT so that there is no more 'misunderstanding' between us.
Now they emailed me redirecting to some other dealer and said they'll fix the issue on their end.
Now people tell me what shall I do with motherfucker scamming the shit put of people?12
Purchase $900 laptop, it's not powerful enough so I return it and get $1,100 laptop, still not powerful enough, return it and get $1,600 laptop. Realize I have a gaming PC and don't need the laptop this powerful and I return it and repurchase the first laptop I bought with a $100 discount because it's now an opened-box, but I know for a fact that it was the one that I got in the first place and opened.
Thanks Best Buy.3
Never again will I fucking work for anyone close to me! It's not fucking worth helping them.
Backstory is too long. Lets just say that they fucking expect too much as we're friends. Assuming that paying 10$ for your domain every year entitles me to work on every ducking detail of your website. Not to forget I gave this person an insane discount on the entire project.
I lost a friend or someone who I assumed was a friend15
Girlfriend: So YouTubers/bloggers do this thing where they partner with brands and promote their items and give a promo code or promo links which you apply while you purchase the item which gives you a discount and they earn money through every purchase
Me: Yeah, I know. I'm a developer, I make those affiliate links
My cousin just messaged me and asked me to make him a discount code for an online retailer.
THATS NOT HOW IT WORKS.6
Live chat with Verizon support online
Wait in line for 30mins finally get an agent
But then she doesn't respond
I take a angry screen shot of the chat and send it to Verizon's Twitter
Get a quick response and the agent replies.
Me: I want renew/upgrade my services at the discount price
Agent: not possible. Contact regular support number to discuss
Me: what if I cancel and sign up again
Her: OK here's the direct number to our retention hotline7
Some absolute cock-monkey fuck-nugget of a marketing director asked me the other week if I could implement a discount voucher system into a new side project / prototype we’re building.
I said ‘yeah sure but it’s a bit of a pain in the ass, i’ll have a look’
He said ‘you just let someone enter a code and that takes £10 off the total order value’
IS THAT HOW IT WORKS?!!
THANKS FOR EXPLAINING THAT TO ME YOU FUCKING ASS-CUNT. BECAUSE I DIDN’T KNOW HOW A FUCKING DISCOUNT VOUCHER WORKED, YOU ABSOLUTE MOUTH BREATHING WASTE OF FUCKING ORGANS.
I’LL JUST GO TYPE THAT INTO MICROSOFT WORD AND SAVE THE FILE TO THE MAGICAL CLOUD SHALL I?
“dear computer, take a voucher code from a user and take £10 off of there order value”
THERE YOU GO YOU PRICK; JOB DONE. SOFTWARE ENGINEERING IS EASY, EH?!
We are interviewing for a junior engineer, and I was tasked with writing the coding exercise for a candidate that came from a coding bootcamp.
Most of the exercises are React-focused, but I opted to go vanilla: Here's an HTML document with an unstyled form. Style it to your taste, and write validation logic according to these rules. Simple, low enough barrier for juniors to complete, but with enough wiggle room to let candidates show senior-level thinking.
I did the exercise myself and timed my work. 7m 22s. So, ok, juniors should have plenty of time for it (They get 1 hour).
Candidate comes in. Can't finish it. Did not know how to use `getElementById`. Assumed jQuery was loaded in the page and couldn't figure out why the $ function didn't work. Global variables containing dashes, without understanding that dashes could not appear in a variable name. 10 minutes of Googling how to see if a radio button is checked. Conditionals comparing strings possibly containing a dollar amount to hard-coded numerical literals.
To be fair, the candidate did show good empathy when viewing the page as an end user and thinking of possible improvements. Good curiosity, listening skills, etc. There was also decent reasoning skills in React terms. But without a library or framework to shape their thoughts, the candidate was unable to produce a functional web form.
I shared that the candidate has potential but the training cost would be high given the lack of technical knowledge that would aid troubleshooting even if they never left their comfort zone. I ultimately advised to reject the candidate.
Manager says he would not discount the candidate for the coding problems because if they can "build an application without understanding the underlying concepts", that was enough.
I want to be supportive. I do. But I also kind of want to retire.9
If you discount all the usual sql injections the most blatant was not our but a system one customer switched to after complaining over cost.
The new system was a bit more bare bones featurewize but the real gem was the profile page for their customers.
The only security was an id param pointing to the users primary key, which was an auto incrementing integer :)
And not only could you access all customer data but you could change it to.
But since the new system was built by their it chief’s son we realized it was not much we could do.2
Be making webpage for local osu! tournament.
Assume you are doing it for free.
Get told to ask for payment.
Tell the client the price(with >45% discount) that is getting really close to your hourly wage.
Get told that it is too much to ask for that webpage.
Ask client to propose a price that he is willing to pay.
Never hear back drom the client.
I just don't get it... Why are people expecting that webpages are cheap? I mean, 6-7 years of experience are worth something, right? I also have to pay rent, buy food and components for my PC that break while working...2
So yesterday i went to this live theatre drama and i had an extra ticket. I asked this random guy the way to that theatre and apparently he was looking to get ticket for the same show. I offered him my other ticket for free.
We introduce ourself to each other and i came to know he worked as salesman or something. As i talked about my job, I told about me leaving job in hopes of self employment.
*Cue the sales pitch*
He started talking about some scheme kind of thing to have financial freedom. He talks about how we can get products at upto 15% discount and we have to sell them to others.
I was skeptical about it and he talked they have website as if that will pimpress me or something.
I visited the site and i was not surprised at all. It was nothing but an halfassed e-commerce store. I knew it was halfassed and probably setup by the "CEO" himself.
And the products in that site are nothing but stupid cosmetic products!
And to top it off, you have to spend around $200 to join this scheme. This poor guy doesn't realise he is just being a talking puppet to that halfassed e-commerce business BY PAYING THEM!!!
He even said one of his friend in London took leave to join this scheme or whatever... What a stupid friend.
Anyway, i just regret giving away a ticket to some stupid people like him. I'd have been much more happier if i had just thrown the extra ticket in the trash.
I live in the USA. Recently moved to a new state. Contacted car insurance company to change my policy to the new state.
Upon doing so, I was told about a new program they have where you install an app on your phone that monitors your driving. It gives discounts to your premium for driving safely.
Intrigued, I decided to try it out. At the end of the month, my discount was TWO DOLLARS.
Uninstalled, not worth the surrender of personal information that they profit off of in addition to my premium payments as well as the drained battery every day.
Has anyone else had experiences with similar discount programs, and was it worth it for you? Maybe I’m just a shitty driver ;).20
Photographer gave me a bigger discount (per his boss' orders) because I showed him free/inexpensive certificate options.
Thanks to all on here who have mentioned that; wouldn't have remembered about free options without others who think in terms of security.
3 in 1
If your project needs more than three sentences to describe and the budget is not in the high four digits or preferably five, then you're clearly not fucking paying enough
Clients that just write a "?" after you wrote a very detailed tutorial, which even a fucking skunk could do, if given a fucking mouse and keyboard, are just the fucking laboratory perfection made retards
I just LOVE IT when my internet drops out for under a minute, so windows doesn't notify you yet and your sftp client trashes both local and remote files
Today JetBrain is discount 50%.
Spent $44.5 on PhpStorm, without telling my wife first. Sorry, I can't resist to buy it. 😫7
Why do some people have to be so self-centered?
They asked for my help with a logo. I said I will help even without any charges. I know they don't want to spend money. And that's why I frankly said I can help free. But then they said they will feel bad then and ask for my quotation. Ok, I sent.
They said "Sorry it is too high, can you give 60% discount?" Ok, sure.
Then they asked if they can get it in 4 days. Ok, I said.
Then they said they changed the name just now.
At least give me a fucking ounce of respect.2
- was a manager of a super market
- got tired of walking to tills to give discount
- taught myself to code
- wrote a loyalty card system that automated the discount
- met an investor with a similar mindset and rolled it out nationally (after it was professionally refactored).
This was my "last job" starting in like 2009 not my current.1
I beg your pardon that I did not implemented the mind-reader API and my app doesn't know if a discount is expired when you DIDN'T FUCKING SET AN EXPIRATION DATE YOU ARSEBADGER!!
I. HATE. DELL. WITH. MY. GUTS.
Their low tiers products are full black plastic overpriced fuckshit, if you press too much the cover you can actually destroy your display. Fuck shitty laptops and fuck this shitty laptop in particular. It's slow. It's so slooooooow. It's everflying fucking slow motion, being on the web is like being in the matrix while dodging bullets made of wordpress plugins. The only good thing I can say is that is living right now, it has been... Three years? I only picked it because of high discount and ubuntu preinstalled (that made me think: oh, maybe they have components that are linux compatible regardless of distros. It was not). I'm enjoying Manjaro, when I'll have the skillz i'm going full Arch.
I will start university this fall. It's going to be a math major. I absolutely need something better than this anyway. I am also freaking out because I don't know which genre of software they could want to make me install and if they're windows/mac only. In the meanwhile I do photography, video, design and as you may suppose Adobe is often my go-to; I also have to build a workstation at home. I am freaking out because WELL FUCK WINDOWS 10 AND ITS PRIVACY NIGHTMARE PERIOD.
Which laptop I buy?
How well does heavy software run in a Windows virtual machine (on the desktop, not the laptop)?11
A little background of me. I’m a firm believer of knowledge is power, skill is practice and hard work. Especially for this field, it’s easier to self learn the skills or language these days without having to take loans or burn a huge hole in ur wallet and stuff. But i personally feel, it’s hard to follow an effective path of learning when the info is everywhere. So have to be careful with that. (that’s why I’m here to learn from experts, lurking around)
Sure, degree is just a paper or validation that this person has completed this and that. But doesn’t reflect their actual skill. Especially for this field where u can just show ur skills by making projects. If ur potential boss is impressed by ur skills, u are hired. BUT if ure in Singapore, they require u to have degree by law. No matter how skilled u are, u only get specific amount of salary within a preset range. The range goes by Diploma, Degree, Master, PhD. Etc. U will still get hired by a company if they like u, but won’t get more than a preset range.
I was contented with just my Diploma. But decided to get degree cuz I wanted to earn more. And now considering to go for ms, just cuz my current company gives sponsorship.
Aside from salary, I do think getting a degree in University is one of the important phases of the life, where ure working hard, trying to juggle different things. Also, u do get other perks being a uni students, like discount for books, get access to latest devices if the uni has.
But all in all, whatever floats ur boat, right.4
There year is 2019, and down here in Australia we have a fuckup called the NBN (National Broadband Network). We all have to switch to it, from ADSL2. Promised dreams and joys, only to be fucked again and again.
Paying $89 AUD per month for 25mbps, however only getting 0.61mBITSps at times. (Literally can see it at home.danferg.com)
Call up support. "Have you rebooted your router?" Yes. "Have you done a test?" Yes. "Can you send me the screenshot?" No, I did it through the CLI. "... What's a CLI?" Fuck.
"So.. have you got a test?" Yeah, I have 7000 of them, from each minute of the day for the past while. *Silence* "oh.... Ok well, we'll have to see if you qualify for a discount" DISCOUNT?! GIVE ME MY FUCKING MONEY BACK.9
Call this exploitation, nativity or social hacking but whenever I wanna buy something online be it some stuff or flight tickets, I just casually search on google and other platforms and wait for a discount to come my way.
Have saved a few thousand bucks this way. Putting big brother to work.3
Awhile ago someone mentioned Freepik and interested to buy the premium package, if my memory serves me. I forgot who.
But Freepik is giving 40% off right now.
// I'm just a Freepik user sharing for anyone interested. I don't get any promotion fees (sadly) ☹️8
Today at 'Derp & Co' is the end of the last sprint, no one have close all the task asigned. Myself included.
- that sucks...
Because there are task from previos sprints still in TODO that block other tasks.
But there is more... Yesterday was the deadline of the project. From today and onwards the client get discount.
- oof (but fair to the client)
Management have in mind AT LEAST 4 more weeks of development.
- But... how... wtf?
In 2 weeks part of the hardware we need for the project will return to the client.
- <smash the door and leave>
Management still is asking if we can do it on time...
- yeah... just call the Doctor, we need a TARDIS ASAP2
Boss: We need a discount coupons system right now
Me: We have lot of security concerns, if we implement that as the things are right now, that will be exploited by hackers to get infinite discounts
Boss: Dont worry, i will monitor everything personally for avoid problems
PD: I entered this software agency 4 months ago by necessity and everything was a mess, they pay 250 bucks to all their devs.
They have what they deserve, a shitty software that can be exploited everywhere
Pls give me another Job xD
PD2: I can sell you lot of exploits for this shitty platform they built JAJAJAJAJAJAJA okno2
Nearly same time as the "don't be evil" got removed from google pages, an old internal video leaked about some futuristic concept, where the AI would try to gather as much data as possible from a user and if not possible, suggest devices with discount (e.g. a scale), that can return that data to the AI or if there's no fitting product, just print or make it based on the previously collected data (favorite color, ..) and suggest that to the user to buy, all since google duplex, anything mentioning google has been outscoring the previous idea 😶
My department vp announced to our sales team that our company would have an online Web based catalog capable of custom style configuration, pricing calculation, quote generation. the catalog would manage all of our customers different discount rates automatically and notify the correct sales rep any time a customer completes a quote. This was announced on September 30(ish) with a launch date of December 1. I'm the only Web developer and I found out afer the announcement. :/2
N A N I ? ? ? ? ?
my dad just upgraded our phone plan from like 100 miles away out of nowhere.
turns out with some weird discount it's only $20 more for unlimited than our old holdover-from-2012 plan of "8GB pool for all lines, but the last 4GB is 3G speeds"
time to start theorycrafting a way to get around the "one device streaming at a time" limit3
Got a cheap FHD TV. Brought a 5 metre HDMI cable with a discount. Brought wireless keyboard and mouse. Connected the TV with my gaming PC and plugged in my keyboard. Also plugged in a xbox gaming receiver.
Now playing video games and watching Netflix with the POWER of a pc. I love off days.7
And the stock market is plunging again.... Who gives a fuck....
It makes no logical sense? Unless someone wants to enlighten me... But I don't see much downside...
COVID kills us all => who gives a fuck about stock prices
COVID kills most of us => who gives a fuck about stock prices, aka pieces of paper. All the survivors will create a new society and either split the goods or fight over them. It'll be like Survivor... But real.
COVID goes away and doesn't do anything => great time to buy buy buy since all you idiots basically just gave me like a huge discount on stock prices. AKA a long overdue market correction9
Barracuda Email Firewall for Dummies:
1. Email Client with perfect grammar and nice subject line. (Email rejected)
2. Change subject line to include Russian and Chinese characters along with discount advertisements for Xanax and male enhancement pills. (Email sent!)
A few years ago I worked at company specialized in Magento(eCommerce) and Magento was changing their licensing model. At the time they had 3 Versions. Community(free), Pro and Enterprise.
They decided to ditch Pro and either make all migrate to Enterprise(with a discount) or go community which wasn’t really compatible. So some shops were in need of a more or less complete rewrite.
My hdd crashed literally the day before but hey no big deal everything is 99% done and on staging. So I had a Trainee at that Time and thought the last few crappy things could be done in pair programming so he can learn a few things.
But fuck him! That motherfucker! He managed to WIPE the staging server and no that was at a time without gut and no SVN. That dipshit just deleted 2 months of work because he thought it was a good idea to SYNC his empty project to the staging system.
Oh god I nearly stabbed him. He did that shit out of his own mind even though I told him a dozen times what would happen... we had to do the whole thing again with me sitting next to him watching every stroke he made.
Guess he learned something while inward silently raging the next weeks.1
After having finished an underpayed (friend discount) project for a few friends and their organization I conclode:
Don’t work for friends.3
Freelance client wanted additions to a website I made( which I had already given them a 50% discount, due to being friends with my boss....) sent them a SoW and they complain because the cost...2
If something is free, doesn't make it the best, it is like saying virtual box is better than VMware because it is free, all I can say is that virtual box is a bitch and VMware is a sexy house wife .....bitches fuck with everyone every with discount....
Good morning peeps6
Sales team wants a discount to go live at midnight, but doesn't realize that requires someone to stay up to push a button at midnight.. It's ok, I don't need a life.4
I want to get advice about a VPN Service,
Currently NordVPN giving away 75% discount for 3 years subscription which costs $107.55,
Any of you have experience with their service?
Need reviews or opinions27
I gave a very small overview of the flutter sdk a whiiiile ago and I have been thinking about going back to it. Currently considering between 2 courses on udemy that are at a discount price. I love the idea of dart as a language and prefer declarative ui building over xml shittyness. I was an Android/ios development for 2 years and hated every minute of it, but really love the idea of building mobile apps.
What are your thoughts and considerations on this? Should I jump right in or just leave it asside? What are your success stories with flutter and what did you use to learn the framework besides the docs? How easy are things like state management and persistent storage with flutter compared to android and ios?
I will eventually make my own decission by building sample projects, but hearing from the community would be great.5
Fuck you, magento and yes, fuck you, customer as well.
After 2 days of fixing crucial things like missing discount functionalities, taxes being displayed as 'tax' because some monkey hardcoded the term in the template instead of getting the tax class name and overall fumbling in magento's core just to make this broken shit do its job, the customer emails me, asking if we're making 'progress at all because the test link looks pretty unfinished'
Burn in hell, you two!12
Good Morning Folks!!!
I haven't been posting in a while, besides the fact that I went thru a crazy psychiatric crisis 6 weeks ago, there have not been much news to share here.
Now, recovering and working again luckily, I have to face again the stupid pointy haired boss.
So, this fucker asked me for an estimation to build a simple web app.
He: Hey, can you make an estimation for this app
Me: sure, here it is.
He: *to the client*, here's the estimation for the web app you requested
Client: Uhmm, can I haz desktop for winbug$??
He: Let me check with dev
Me: Sure why not, we can do F# using MVU which is basically the same as using modern web frameworks
He: Sure, I'll tell that to the client.
Client: Oooohhh, C#, we lovez C#, can I haz discount?
He: Client wants discount to make it in C#.
Me: Oh, you can give him a discount to make it in F#, I never said C#
He: But your cv says you used C# ten years ago.
Me: Sure, but is not keeping up with functional design patterns, which is what I do.
He: Ok, so I'm offering him the discount in F#
He: So, project is approved, thanks for the discount, you have 3 weeks to present the product in C#.
Me: Sure, I'll start when I get the downpayment.
Me: I'm considering saying that I didn't understand that he wanted it in C#, and just do F# and not let him know until the project is done.
OMG! What are you doing guys, the ultimate offer is here by Godaddy. Now I can afford food and domain at the same time, thanks Godaddy!5
Anyone in the Seattle area like to play escape rooms? I develop for an escape room company downtown and I can discount some tickets if anyone is interested.
Also does anyone have any suggestions for other escape rooms in the Seattle and Vancouver areas?3
Hm... Sounds familiar and works pretty well I think? 😀
Imagine a local pizzeria is seeking a $200,000 bank loan to expand its business. Usually, if a bank accepts, the loan is provided with interest. This is a risk for the pizzeria, because if it can’t pay back the loan with interest, the business could suffer or close altogether.
There are other options, though. Imagine instead if the bank offered the pizzeria a $100,000 loan, and required it to raise the rest within the community, selling coupons in a local currency. A $100 coupon might be worth $120 in pizza, for instance. This scheme could help the pizzeria raise the extra funds.
In general, the bank’s risk in offering the loan is also decreased. Customers themselves help a business grow, making it even easier for the pizzeria to repay the original loan.
The pizzeria can now expand without being burdened by huge interest payments, and is confident that the community is eager to support its growth. Customers, in turn, are rewarded by a 20 percent discount on pizza!6
The moment your friends discover that you are web dev:
-Hey, can you help me with something?
-I want to install Word, can you help me? I can give you the computer if you want
-... you can get it from the web page, and you have a student's discount...
-No no, I will buy it, and you can install it, ok?
What the hell is wrong with this world?1
Me: Yay! I’m getting more clients which means more income which means my accountant won’t look at me funny anymore when I say I’m still running a business and not a hobby! Go me!
Also me: I need $1400 worth of project management software subscription for 2 years (to get a discount) so I can manage the Agile workload among the developers and writers. I also need to recover $700 of accidental ad spend for that stupid Yelp account I forgot I had a “free trial” on. Guess I’m still running a hobby for a bit.1
I just finished posting this but think it deserves its own post.
If you're creating a business or "startup" (as people like to call it these days) don't assume the idea is novel or investors will just jump on board. Focus on the business fundementals, money and cash flow, even before launch, unless you can afford not to. But really you can't afford not to. Selling before launch means that you're effectively doing two things 1 you're collecting new customers and income for the business and 2 you're. raising awareness at the same time. Obscurity is death and failure.
Get you a good sales team and marketer when the time is right.
Have a year of runway.
Identify the sites and groups your target audience and investors frequent. Start conversations now, buzz is the hardest thing to generate.
Start building relations with customers and potential clients now. Discuss launch, ask them if they'd be willing to pay up front before launch, in order to secure a "lifetime membership", offer it as an early opportunity and charge extra. Giving a discount out of the gate is a mistake B/c it says to potential investors that you don't think it's ready or worth it yet. Of course if it's between making 1. Some money or 2. No money, don't let it be a deal breaker, offer a discount. Going from no clients to any clients is a BIG deal. If you can do 1 you can make it to 10, if 10, you can reach 100, we etc.
No one likes asking for money and yet it is as important if not more important than development.
decimal discount = line.Discount - (line.StandardPrice - line.CustomerPrice);
2 fucking hours working out what and why the fuck this line of code. Fml
How would you implement a system that allow people to share a product that's normally one price but because of the referral there is a discount. Oh and the discount is supposed to based which country you live in.
Right now the whole system runs on the honor system and a little front end verification. How do I clean up this mess??
Sure getting the user's location could work until they use a vpn. I don't really know what to do here.3
So we're approaching the end of WebStorm license subscription. Got notified about renewal. Then there's this question... Should we
1. not renew, use the fallback version (2018 something) because we don't need that many updates anyway and renew next year to get essentially a 50% off discount, or
2. renew and get the 20% off discount?
Asking for my boss lol4
What do you guys think of php's traits?
For those that don't know, traits provide copy/paste discount inheritance functionality. You can include common methods or properties. For example, I use the TimestampableEntity trait to include createdAt, id and updatedAt fields to my entities. They're really useful for simple stuff. You can include multiple traits in one class and it will error on clashing methods/properties3
Mediamarkt and Saturn seem to have vast discounts on consoles, some phones and laptops until this weekend.
100€+ discount on most.
So if you want to burn some money,, it might be worth looking.
Just got myself a Pixel 3a with 110€ discount.2
Would you rather get the current Macbook Pro at a discount, or wait for the new one that ditches the MagSafe and all the other ports for the USB-c at full price when it comes out?19
when a client say
"I know Html and CSS do I get a discount if I embed your application in an Iframe"1
I listen to podcast during commute to work. Read blog posts. Sometimes i bought courses, only If something i really want to learn and if get a good discount on udemy (10-15$).

I bought a LG 4K monitor that has AMD FreeSync because there was a huge discount for Prime Day. Arrived today haven't unpacked but my PC actually has a GeForce 1080...
Did screw up and but the wrong monitor? Or does FreeSync/GSync not matter much?10
Customer: "Hi, we need to add a discount system to our site as it's Black Friday on Friday"
This is now the fourth one this week. Are they taking the piss?1
i am thinking about a rest-api for mild curses inspired by https://devrant.com/rants/2975770/... by @PrivateGER
i'd add *you accidentally order the plus size model for your phone instead of the small one and can't send it back because you won't get this discount for a recent phone again*1
IT/Dev Connections must be getting desperate. They keep on extending the early bird registration, and taking $100.00 off with the special VIP discount. I would so love to spend a week in Vegas hanging with like-minded geeks, though.
PyCharm - worth buying?
Currently 30% off.
I'm learning to code Python at the moment and just using Sublime - so wondering whether it's worth it?
Any good free resources for full stack web development. Also if a resource teaches mainly frontend but also teaches some backend it is a full stack web development resource in my eyes. I was looking at freecodecamp but it is a bit too vast for me. I am also looking at the cokplete intro to web development v2 course by Brian holt for free on frontend masters but it is 2 years old and has not been updated. Also it does not teach that much bakcend hust node and express.
Also another question is frontend masters good for web development. I did not find many threads about it. I got a discount for it which gives me a one year subscription for 195 dollars18
