Dev: boss, there are some abnormalities and confusion in the client's specifications.
Dev: Shouldn't we get clear about them and then start coding?
Boss: No need. We assume and code. Then show them to our clients and then ask for their opinions. We will change again according to their opinion.
A few months later....
Dev: *seeing so many specifications change and realizing now have to refactor a lot of codes* , FML.16
Her: What do you do?
Me: I'm writing my thesis on bringing AI to smartphones.
Her: I think AI is terrible!
Me: oh, you are an engineer too?
Me: oh, you've studied economics and or ethics and are worried about its implications on society?
Her: No, but have you?
Me: I have a degree in economics, an MBA and an now about to get my BSc in CS.
Her: well, regardless I still think it's terrible.
Me: well in that case how about you shove your unfounded opinion where the sun don't shine!21
Do devs really fight or do we just mildly assert differing opinions then ignore each other for extended periods of time?3
I hate it when people say they want to "GET a new girlfriend"...
Shouldn't it be "FIND a new girlfriend"?
I mean you can't just go into the supermarket and get some butter, milk and a new girlfriend. You can't buy them. By saying that, you seem to me as if you're treating women as objects. I know it's technically possible to buy a girlfriend, but that's prostitution.
I think that "GET a new girlfriend" just doesn't sound right...
Dear EA games.
If you want to tell me my password needs to be “more” secure in your error message, at least tell the fucking truth about it.
- 100 random character password entered on mobile
- response: password needs to be more secure
- loads on pc
- notices password rules
- must be between 8 and 16 characters...
- I think that’s a Wii little Less secure you ass hats, and WHY can’t you show this fucking notice on mobile 😖12
Hai devRant! Working on the privacy app and want opinions on the page for details on specific apps (as in, applications so web/app/mobile or even embedded?!).
Yeah I know that the aligning is deffo not perfect but hey, gotta start somewhere :). Detail: everything you see here (the content and actually also the icon path) is rendered from the database already.
Does anyone else have this? I always try to adjust the way I say things to non-hostile/aggressive (talking about things I have very specific opinions on) because I'm somehow afraid of starting a heated argument. On here, at work, everywhere.
Going to try to just speak my mind, even if that would get me into more fights etc 😅13
So yesterday was a regular old day where I came into the office and began my work. My office mate that sits next to me happens to be having an issue with her batch script. It wasn't running correctly so she had decided to call in IT and have them take a look at it. What she was trying to do was process some images through a dedicated super-computer located on site.
So as you can imagine with both of them standing right next to me it was hard not to listen in on their conversation. The IT guy decided to go through a barrage of different troubleshooting methods to figure out what was happening with her script. And soon enough they discovered what was wrong. It happened to be an issue with how Windows decides to deal with new line characters. FYI it looks like this shit "\n \r"
The fucking \r looked like a directory to Linux. So it would squeal to a halt every single time she tried to run.
How this happened was due to her using notepad to edit her batch file.
At this point, I made a comment about her use of Notepad.
"Oh, you're using notepad? I've had similar issues like this in the past when I've used notepad. I really hate notepad." I said with a slight chuckle.
And that was pretty much the end of our encounters. However, at the end of the day, she decided to speak up about this.
"I don't appreciate you making comments about my use of Notepad. That was a form of microaggression towards me, and I don't want you to do it again."
Completely taken aback I replied.
"I'm sorry you took it that way, it was a joke and wasn't meant to be taken personally."
"Well, your intent does not change impact. And by the way, I take pride in my code and scripting. I don't need your commentary about my code nor your micro-aggressions." She said in a huff.
"Well again, I'm sorry you feel that way," I replied back
*I'd like to say that this situation is loosely paraphrased, but the essence of what happened is still there.
At this point, this is what I have to say about this situation. Why the FUCKING FUCK are you using notepad to program anything. There ARE A SHIT TON of differing programs that are available for your use and you decide to use fucking notepad?!?! $%&*@#$^
You could use notepad++, you could use Sublime, you could use every-fucking-thing except Notepad!!! If anything I think I had every right to make a comment about your stupid use of notepad. And darling, your script not working was well deserved, I hope you run into more errors like this because you deserve nothing less for your arrogance. So you can take your opinions and shove them up your fat-ass because at the end of the day I don't give a FUCK about your opinions on my micro-aggressions that you're spouting off about.
I suggest the next time you feel attacked about your code perhaps you should take a cold hard look at yourself before thinking that I'm the one that is the FUCKING problem.17
I feel like the word "code" is way too overused and more of a buzzword. There are all these sites that say "learn to code using HTML in 2 hours!" Those titles are great for getting people interested but I feel like they hurt the "reputation" of the word.
There are so many people that come to me and say they are HTML coders and know the entire language. But then they can only make a site that says "hello world" with maybe a link and a colored background.
Also. Can these sites please explain that html isn't really programming and is more like fancy documentation? Html + CSS may be Turing complete, but they aren't programming languages and in my opinion, shouldn't be treated or referd to as such.
If the message you got from this is "ewpratten doesn't like front end web development" , you are wrong. I think it's great.
Anyways.. what are you guys' opinions on this?10
A: Can you tell me your opinion about this? Please, be honest.
Me: Ok, I think you could do it in a different way, but let's talk about what you did and see how to make it better...
A: I don't think so, I think this is the best way to do it.
Me: Oh, OK.
A: Why are you always complaining about my job?
Me: Well, you just asked me, and I work on this too, so I thought...
A: I don't think you're collaborative enough with me!
Me [walking away]: Oh, OK...6
I'm working on my author website and I really suck at designing. So, can you give me your opinions? I can take honesty, even if it's harsh.
So, ugly or decent? What do you think?54
It has come to my attention that people like to read!
Specifically, I mean that a lot of ranters like fiction.. :D
I've been trying to decide on something to write for a while now, and I think I have it..
"The Traveler" (name open to suggestions)
The Traveler is a magic-based fantasy where our main character travels between world's using ancient stone portals (think: Stargate) and uses her unique powers to play god.
Each world she visits will equal to a different story, and she might play a good or bad guy (or both) depending on what the world has in store for her.
Her powers will include my WIP magic system from RISE, as well as some extra querks that aid the flow of the story.
I may still work on RISE, and I will keep in mind that The Traveler and RISE come from the same universe (I think RISE will be a prequel to The Traveler, and tell the tale of how she got her powers, and the origin of the portals..)
Let me know your thoughts below! ^~^36
Client: “I’m sorry I just don’t understand the issue with the contract?
You said logging into Facebook was easy, what’s the issue with feature X (= complex graph API queries based on opinions and sentiment) and displaying images and videos, it’s the same thing!!!”
... no sir, it is NOT2
Worst part of being a dev?
The last 10% of a project.
Being in beta, gathering feed back, sorting through opinions and user preferences. All that takes forever compared to the first 90%.
I wonder. What makes people so offensive about their opinions?
"How the f can you use Windows?"
"I can't believe you use android..."
"What an idiot he uses tabs..."
I don't get it... respect subjectivity?10
I couldn't care less for aggressive 20 year old devs opinions.
Everytime I see a post where someone is being an asshole making strong comments about software, I'm like "oh, how cute, he's trying to be taken seriously by insulting others".
Then I check history and it's just a flow of hateful comments and memes...
(I do mind respectful and humble 20 year olds though)16
Is it working..?
I think it's working! ^~^
Tell me if this looks correct, I'm trying to mimic the linux CD command in my game:24
Instead of making business cards, I bought small index cards. The first time ‘round, I carefully taped four or five together with chalkboard tape and then wrote on them with gold pen. Now I’m just using the index cards and black pen since the reaction to that in person’s been positive. What do you guys think? Are people just humoring me in person?23
Before a month I wrote I would like to create my own pastebin-like service.

As a CS student, where should I invest my time between these options ?
- Get a higher GPA
- Invest in personal project
- Contribute to open source project
- Have a part-time internship during school
- Take time for myself
I would like to have opinions based on your personal experiences !30
Things I hate:
- People who think they are cool because they use GNU/Linux
- People who use GNU/Linux because it's free software but at the same time use Windows because "It's needed for gaming"
- People who ask for hacking
- People who don't try alternatives to their proprietary software
- People who say Chrome/Chromium is the better browser
- People who say Firefox is the better browser
- People who say any other browser is the better browser
- People who can't wait for a moment
- People who are super opinionated and call everything "bullshit" or "garbage"
- People who take everything serious
All in all, a lot of cliche tech people. Which by the way makes it hard to find a decent tech Community since 9 out of 10 Communities are highly opinionated. Nothing against opinions, but it doesn't really help to call something garbage. Explain me WHY you think it's garbage and let me decide it myself. Links are fine. Why are tech people often that unreflected?
I don't really expect answers but also don't mind them ^^14
I am building a PC for my first time and thought about every step more than twice. This is going to be my build:
Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 7 2700
RAM: Corsair DIMM 8 GB DDR4-2400
Video card: Zotac NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
SSD: Samsung 960 EVO 250 GB
HDD: Seagate ST1000DM010 1 TB
PSU: PURE POWER 10 | 300W
Case: Aerocool Cylon RGB Midi-Tower - black
What are your opinions on this build?63
Friend: "You are very opinionated about mobile apps aren't you?"
Me: "Yeah, but I have the right opinions"1
Hello everybody. First time ranter, so please be nice.
Starting off with a classic: text editors.
I'm mainly a .net developer, so I mostly use Visual Studio (with vim key bindings), and (g)vim for everything else. However, visual studio code is slowly winning me over. It's sleek, it's pretty, and does a lot of cool stuff. It doesn't do all that vim does though (or does it in ways I don't yet know), and is slightly less customizable. On the other hand, vim sometimes feels like too much overhead for what I use it for.
What do you guys think? What do you use, and what personal gripes do you have?10
It will never stop happening... people who don't know shit about code, assuming some conclusion and giving their opinions on software.3
DO NOT be afraid to argue with people. It doesnt matter who they are. Senior engineers, tech leads, delivery managers, if you know something is wrong make it heard. I made a point of telling my Project Manager that the current project is the worst ive ever seen. The technology is awful and we all hate the development. They need to know this stuff. And if they come to you with a deadline that you dont think you can make, say it then and there. Then they cant come back and say why isnt this done. Basically dont just do as youre told. If we needed that we would get robots to do our job. We need people who think and have opinions and make those opinions heard at the appropriate level.2
C++ VS Java VS PHP. VSCode VS Vim VS Emacs. Chrome VS Firefox. Android VS iPhone. Windows VS MacOS VS Linux.
I am beginning to feel that opinions are like buttholes. We all have them and we all think everyone else's stinks14
What kind of developer are you and what is your opinion on other development areas?
Me: Junior dev, oriented towards full stack and Android(with a sysadmin background):
-Low-level(kernel development, embedded, drivers, operating systems, reverse engineers)- Badass, I wish I could do that.
-Mobile apps- awesome but too high level sometimes.
-Full stack/Backend- awesome.
-Web Frontend- fuck HTML+CSS. JS is cool I guess.
-Enterprise applications(e.g SAP) Pajeet, my son.
-Malware development- Holy shit that is awesome.
-Video Game development- was my dream since childhood.
-Desktop apps- No opinion.7
I don't like peoples who force a windows users switch to Linux. It's their FUCKING CHOICE. Let them whatever they like to use it. Forcing people to use something is JUST STUPID and I see them as MORONS.
You are the reason behind not taking self decision making.
FUCK YOU MORONS. FUCK YOU
"We don't use a VCS like git, what are you opinions on this?" This is great in my opinion. You get to see some people sheepishly agree and say it's fine and try back it up, or people put valid points why they think it's wrong. You can start to gauge a person's personality after a few of those kinds of questions.4
Clients that barely can turn on their computer that have opinions on how much complexity and time is involved developing X feature. I'm no rage-o-holic, but that is one of those rare things that make me want to stab someone in the face.
Well, I am bit late to the party, but we had good amount of questions asking people to share their different kinds of individual experiences.
How about weekly questions that inspire and initiate discussions within community?
Instead of we posting our experience(s) and waiting for karma, why not interact with fellow community members and learn something by sharing opinions and knowledge?
Topics can be anything, past inventions to latest trends. Age old business tech tycoon to what Linus said in his latest interview. Upcoming gadgets to opinions over Google I/O.
This was inspired by @SantaClauze's post (https://devrant.com/rants/1609300/...)4
Amazing API's and SEX!
Alright people, now that I've got your attention, I'm getting to the point where I need to plan and roll out a solid API for a project. So after reading a lot of the horror stories written here, What are the finer points of what makes an amazing API experience to use and integrate with over a poor one?
And don't say documentation (If you do explain why) 😁11
Functional programming vs object oriented programming.
I don't believe one can replace the other I just want to know some other people's opinions.41
Does anyone of you know about it?
If you are, I would like to hear your opinions.
StackOverflow survey 2016 is out! Do the stats correspond to the opinions here on devRant?
I was just wondering guys. If all developers speak English.
By speak English I mean easily able to communicate at a basic level because from what I know... all programming language had their base vocabulary in English language.
These are the things that finally finally helped me stick to learning programming.
Hello world! This is my first story on devrant and I would like to share how I finally overcame the barriers that had always prevent me from learning programming in a more serious and structured way.
I know my way around linux, had some experience with BASIC many years ago and have more than basic notions of cryptography... however I never got myself to learn programming in such a way that I could write an app or interact with an API. Until now.
I have advanced more than ever before and I believe it might be thanks to these aspects:
I have always had struggles with languages that were too compact or used many exotic or cryptic expressions. However I have found C# to be much more readable and easier to understand.
2. Visual Studio
My previous attempts at learning programming were without an IDE. Little did I know what I was missing!
For example when I tried learning python on Debian, I almost went crazy executing programs and trying to find the compile errors in a standard text editor.
Intellisense has been live changing as it allows me to detect errors almost immediately and also to experiment. I'm not afraid to try things out as I know the IDE will point out any errors.
3. .NET library and huge amounts of documentation
It was really really nice to find out how many well documented classes I had available to make my learning process much easier, not having to worry about the little details and instead being able to focus on my program's logic.
4. Strong typing
Call me weird, but I believe that restricting implicit conversions has helped learn more about objects, their types and how they relate to each other.
I guess I should be called a C# fanboy at this point, but I owe it to that language to be where I'm now, writing my first apps.
I also know very very little about other languages and would love to hear if you know about languages that provide a similar experience.
Also, what has helped you when you first started out?
New PM thinks it's a great idea to start micromanaging my team's (private) repo names. Can't wait to hear his opinions on our class and variable names! 😭3
What must someone do to be called a developer? Is there some number of projects that someone should complete before they should call themself a developer?14
Really wish the world was less volatile when it comes to opinions!
Commented on a video about fallout 3 being an important game and a tonne of people were bitching and insulting the creator because they think New Vegas is better...
I commented saying I prefer fallout 3 and instantly got bombarded with insults... Ugh
Hope none of my games will ever cause this shit -,-10
Bind's unpopular opinions, chapter #fuckyou:
Linux for server, windows for desktop.
Tune in for the next episode where we fight off angery linux fanboys6
So I' working on a personal blog/site, but I'm a terrible designer. Any suggestions and/or opinions would be greatly appreciated!11
I'd love it if the number of ++ s a rant has, to only be shown after you either ++ the rant or open it. thing is, I found my self scrolling through my algo feed and looking at the ++ count before the post itself. I was judging the post by the number of ++s it has. which made me realize that I skipped a couple of posts that I didn't read and that I could've liked.
what do you guys think about this?12
Whosoever developed this app, hats off to them.
An app where devs can share their opinions and everything.6
Someone recently told me that learning command line is pointless for a developer today, the world has moved towards GUIs for a reason and there is no point in making your dev life harder.
Sooo there is a website out there that teaches you how to code and rewards you by undressing a girl after you complete each task successfully.
Not going to endorse them here but I have really really mixed feelings about that.
So apparently they're thinking of adding a lightweight graphics library to the c++ spec - opinions?5
@AlexDeLarge and any other React guys, which do you prefer? Traditional css files, whether that be vanilla or with a preprocessor, or style objects for each component.
There are some pretty clear pros i can identify for both sides, but I'm pretty sure I'm missing somethings and I'd like to hear from you guys your opinions and experiences with either27
"hey my company I like diversity, and agree with our goal but think we are punishing people for voicing an opinion that we could accomplish our values of nondiscrimination using better methods"
Googles Response "we encourage diversity including diversity of opinions. All employees should be safe to talk about these things. Oh and FUCK you man you're fired we don't agree with you standing up and voicing a differing opinion"3
Tl;Dr: I think react is ugly.
Just cloned a developer git for a certain API and I was going through the application code to get a feel around. I literally said out loud "eww" when I saw the code for the views. Nothing about the pros and cons of the framework, I just think it's hideous. Thoughts from react developers welcome8
Why is the internet such a toxic place... You voice your personal opinion and instantly have people who believe they are 'better' than you call you a stupid consumer because they use something that others may not care for.
Fuck me people, why can't we just have opinions and respect each other, it's not that fucking hard!7
Just one or two days ago there was a guy asking for opinions on his UI (a reddit viewer app). I couldn't find him and wanted to ask him a question tho.
You probably use some class for fetching the data from reddit, hoe to you make it accessible within your app? Storing a static instance within the application class (like many do with the application context) and using that one?
Would be nice if you could answer ^^13
Returning moron here, missed ya guys.
Now, idk if this qualifies as politics but i guess it does have something to do with tech/privacy/hacking.
Free Julian Assange?
Surprised no one is talking about this honestly. @linuxxx any opinions?34
I will buy myself a new notebook in around 2 1/2 months and I would like to know your opinions.
I do web development and Android app development. I will most likely put arch linux on it. It will be my main workstation and I would also like to us it for university to which I will go in 3 years.
My current favorite is the Dell XPS 15.
Do you have any other suggestions or is the Dell good?19
I'm pretty sure some users only browse StackOverflow looking for questions to flag as "Not Constructive" or "Opinion Based". Some of the best programming discussions I've read have been in the answers and comments to closed questions, so get over it, happiness haters! Sometimes I want to hear people's opinions.4
I've put together a gaming desktop, and I want your opinions 😊
Keep in mind, I am Australian, so it's all in AUD currency.
Currently 1$ AUD == 1.30$ USD16
When it comes to nervewrecking situations, what I've encountered so far is a pull request for which the 2 reviewers had opposite opinions.
Something like this:
* opens pull request *
reviewer 1: "update using approach A"
* updates code *
reviewer 2: "this is wrong, change to approach B"
* updates code again *
reviewer 1: "this isn't what i asked for, i'm rejecting your PR"
Oh, also, each of them had their own set of coding standards.
What was your most challenging situation when writing code?1
So... you are the architect, a senior developer, with no experience in maven.
I am a middle developer with a long experience in maven.
WHY THE HELL YOU DON'T LISTEN TO ME!!!
I am open to confrontation but dude... your thoughts and opinions are not automatically orders for me!!!
With all the frameworks and libraries available and game engines to develop games, its now easier than ever to build stuff.
With this in mind, do you think its necessary to have a core knowledge of how stuff work under the hood? Or is it okay to build upon and develop new stuffs on the foundations available today?5
Being a junior and part of a small team at a startup, working with a new software architecture, even the team lead is a beginner in it. It feels like I'm at an echo chamber, there's nobody expert enough to look up to if stuck, decisions seem to be based on opinions rather than an architectural design kinda point of view.
Ugh, I hope I'm not the only here ever feeling this way.7
My teacher showed some Mr. Robot episodes on lesson. I think it's pretty good. What are your opinions about it? Should I start to watch it?4
I'm thinking about starting my own blog, where I can post my research and/or opinions on...
Though my private projects have a bad reputation I still think I might try one again and see if it works9
What do you guys think about Visual Studio Code?
I personally like it, just wondering your opinions.11
Just put my first 'big' personal project on GitHub to get advice, feedback, and opinions.
I don't know why I'm feeling so nervous about the project being seen and judged by anyone on github10
I'm going to attend a free 4-day course about Flutter at my University starting next week, never really got into mobile dev before but since it's free it may be interesting.
What do you think about Flutter, is it worth learning it?2
I'm thinking about making an linkidin account. I'm mostly a privacy centered person so I don't have any social media. Should I do it because it can maybe help me in my career? I'm currently at my first junior dev job.
Love to hear your opinions.4
Privacy peeps, what's your opinion on usage of surveillance for national defence, domestic security, etc. ?
I'm just curious, most privacy-minded people I know generally trip up when confronted with stuff like "yeah, but if surveillance was a thing then that blast which killed 20 people yesterday could have been averted."
I've heard quite a few opinions on both sides, what's yours?23
So I have this idea of a potentially amazing idea but I'm so conflicted as to whether or not it is a good idea (I know it will probably never happen) but it's really hard to put it in writing for people's opinions and input on it...
Anyone else have these moments?8
So sick of my pessimistic, paranoid supervisor. She's always accusing everyone of being spies and has opinions on everyone.... Complains abt management and everything under the sun.... But when management comes in the room... Quiet as a mouse, because in her words ,'I don't wanna fix anything'
THEN WHY THE FUCK ARE U COMPLAINING!?!?
U clearly see nothing wrong and that's why u don't wanna change it
Fucking hate people who endlessly complain1
So opinions: should a software engineer get certifications? I mean, to me they seem like pointless wastes of money, but my coworkers don't seem to think so. I design and write code, why do I need MCSD or whatever? Follow up, if you feel they are useful: which ones and why?4
TABS OR SPACES?
It doesn't matter what you use, but use the ome you can stand with.
DONT FUCKING EVER BULLY ONE BECAUSE HE'S NOT USING YOUR "STANDARD"
Try to have some good discussion why you should use tabs or spaces and let other opinions matter. They may have some good reason for it.
PS I'm using spaces because it wont fuck up my Code if i change the OS (Windows<->Linux Server)5
QTCreator, cause it fucking works.
GCC, cause it fucking works unlike others.
zsh/bash, better than any other.
Sublime Text, being awesome while not murdering my PC or having DPI issues *cough* Atom.
Linux kernel, cause it doesn't fucking bluescreen when using strtok().
SSH, remote controlling a PC has never been so enjoyable.
Git, cause otherwise my version control would be a mess.
SDL2, cause the following two are cancer: X and winAPI.
GNU coreutils, it just works.
ArchLinux/Debian, it works for me okay? don't judge (but still pacman > apt)
valgrind and gdb, cause I can be an idiot sometimes.
nano > vim > emacs. fight me
C/C++, portable enough whilst not being shit.
Win 7, shutting up people about how the creators update broke everything.
PS Well, I know I went offtopic but these are my true opinions about software/programs I deal on a daily basis.6
To be able to convince an offering manager that his / her opinions don't always match what our customers want
Along with weekly rant topics, devRant should have weekly polls where you create a poll on opinionated questions like "bash or zsh?". Devs would upvote one & post a rant why they prefer one over the other.
With lots of devs here, the opinions of experienced devs would really help young buds. @dfox4
At the risk of starting a war, what are folks opinions on in-line comments?
Personally, I'm against them. Self documenting code for the what, SCM for the why.
Comments can get out of date if not maintained; code cannot lie.10
I am seeing a trend on here, where people dismiss a technology based upon their experience that they cannot use it first try, even though they clearly lack experience or knowledge about the proper usage.
Also people seemingly tend to imply self explanatory at various topics ranging from relatable broadly known experiences to small nieche opinions.
How is that? Since when do people, especially programmers, think they do not need to explain their viewpoint, even though there is not a clear indicator as to why? Stating an opinion without any backup to the claim is just a void call in the wind. Of course i know that user X thinks that Y is his or her opinion. But what good does it do when i can't relate / understand or discuss this opinion?3
I want to get advice about a VPN Service,
Currently NordVPN giving away 75% discount for 3 years subscription which costs $107.55,
Any of you have experience with their service?
Need reviews or opinions27
What’s your opinions on AWS, Azure, and whatever googles version is called. I’m curious and I’m asking because I don’t really know a lot of details. I just know they host stuff and make some stuff easier.31
Does having a good rank on Stack Overflow reflects positiveness on your Resume? Share your experience(s).5
What do you think of Allo? I deeply respect devRant community members opinions.
I am going to give it a whirl this weekend.6
So there seems to be a lot of discussion lately about the closing of background apps on Android. Now, I expect a decent amount of disapproval from this, but I happen to be one of those people BECAUSE I've experienced that it drains my battery more to have them running.
Since I genuinely trust y'all quite a lot compared to how much one should trust the internet in general, I'd like some more proper and reliable info (or as reliable as it can get) on this. If I'm indeed wrong I want you to convince me.9
Question; if you've got a team member who's been phoning it in during the last few sprints and their inattention causes extra work for others, what do you do?
- Have a private word directly one to one.
- Say nothing but bitch amongst yourselves
- Complain to the team lead
- Call them out during a daily standup and tell them they're producing shit.
Has anyone here considered going off grid? Im dreaming of buying a plot somewhere in Chile and building an off grid home. Im a remote worker and plan to remain being one.
(Off grid meaning generating your own electricity, 'harvesting' rain water and growing some greens)
Im asking to get advice and opinions2
So.. I'm doing this 2 week long internship at a pretty big corporation that was looking for high school students for a security training program, and they're having us utilize Splunk (which I've heard about, but never used). Any opinions and/or tips on this tool? :)1
I am really curious... who of you actually uses snapchat and why?
In my opinion it's one of the most useless apps out there and one of the best concepts to share all your private information with other people and of course the developers.
Also I'd like to believe that rather intelligent people don't use it or if they use it then just for the sake of not being excluded. Since this is a community of programmers I'd like to hear your opinions.9
I gave a very small overview of the flutter sdk a whiiiile ago and I have been thinking about going back to it. Currently considering between 2 courses on udemy that are at a discount price. I love the idea of dart as a language and prefer declarative ui building over xml shittyness. I was an Android/ios development for 2 years and hated every minute of it, but really love the idea of building mobile apps.
What are your thoughts and considerations on this? Should I jump right in or just leave it asside? What are your success stories with flutter and what did you use to learn the framework besides the docs? How easy are things like state management and persistent storage with flutter compared to android and ios?
I will eventually make my own decission by building sample projects, but hearing from the community would be great.5
I want to be a web developer and Ive learned some HTML.
So, any opinions?9
I love exceptions - ANSI C with exceptions - that would be perfect for me.
I know that there are different opinions out there... I can’t understand why they haven’t implemented exceptions into Go. I have read the article why they didn’t but for me... exceptions are a GREAT language concept!!!!3
I have started doing one hour coding challenges... I try to make small projects in that time.. I have felt improvement in my programming and thinking skills but I wanna know your opinions if I am doing the right thing for the long run?
language: python, arcade library.8
On Monday we're haven't a meeting with our design team because they think we should use polymer over react.... Our management team seems to trust their opinions over ours (the dev team) despite being told they have different uses.
When will this maddness end :(6
I wish I had that self esteem a lot of my classmates posses.
I'm working for my prof, I've kinda made my very first step into the industry. Somewhere deep inside I know I'm talented and smart. However, every day I am worried that I'm not good enough and it will be noticed at the job soon.
Is that common thing in Dev community? Just want to know opinions7
Have you worked with GraphQL? Saw it for the first time and it looks like a pretty good tool for working with APIs, to me. I am excited to read your opinions about GraphQL.23
What do people here use for blogging and hosting? Everything I can find from searching suggests self-hosted Wordpress, but I am cautious because of its reputation in the dev world and since all the guides I have found so far are directed at non-coders. Thanks in advance for any opinions 😊8
Elixir/Phoenix developers, what are your opinions on Ruby/Rails and vice-versa?
(Not trying to start a war here 😅, just some heathy discussion)3
I can't tell if I'm in majority or minority on hating vim. I just use nano for CLI editing and some better GUI editor with, well, GUI.
Hey all! Ironically, last time I posted here was when I got my first job in the industry. Well, two and a half months later I'm here asking all the professional devs for their opinions on this matter. So, for all you full-time working devs out there: How do you stay motivated to work on side projects during your free time?5
//Not a rant; Just asking for opinions
I'm trying to replicate this on a website. Should I go via the CSS route by making rounded squares or just place a bunch of images of each individual circle? Is there any pros or cons of doing either or? Or is it really all the same at the end? Thanks! 😅19
Instead of ranting I thought it would be nicer to ask for opinions/solutions: How to cope with a collegue that keeps producing trainwrecks of code which you have to first refactor to make it work in a more logical/structured way? Yes, his initial solution works (in a way), but it's just not how 99% of the other developers would solve it. And yes, we've shown him quite a few times how it should/could be (in a positive and constructing manner)5
Wat up guys. I want your opinions on how to deal with other devs who have less experience but arrogant enough to take advice or even basic instruction making the project take longer, e.g. insist on doing everything from scratch because libraries are too high level etc.
How do you guys end up not murdering these types of people?3
Bash on Windows is incoming soon! As a dual boot win10/Ubuntu user I am pretty psyched. Curious as to what you all think, and opinions from insider program participants.
I just hope it isn't half-assed.5
!Rant, but a suggestion for devRant.
I feel that I get the best advise and widest range of opinions on this app. Maybe we should get a Q and A section where we can ask questions4
Any Laravel developers?
What's the coolest thing you ever made with it? (url if public) And post your opinions about the framework.18
Feature request: copy text on double tap or hold on Android. Wanted to save a few quotes, but not as a screenshot... Just an idea :)3
btw fellow gentoo users, what are your opinions about it? What advice do you have for noobs? My Black Friday E585 Thinkpad is coming in a few weeks and I'm thinking about switching distros.
Used to use Arch, recently I've been using Artix with runit as the alternative init system. I need something simple and systemd free, and I think gentoo would scratch that itch.8
Can someone recommend me a Linux distro with good hardware integration and stability for my laptop?12
Prospects of AI developments making software developers obsolete.
Thoughts, opinions and quibbles.1
Just want to know how many other game developers there are on here...
Got an idea I want to get other Devs opinions on but would love to here some tips and opinions from other game devs!20
So i was considering to start learning laravel but after all the hate php gets, i'd like to ask for your opinions guys.
Any opinion is welcome and most appreciated12
In a corporate world...apparently having open communication and sharing opinions is only allowed between ELDERS(bade log)😑1
TL;DR Too many rant topics, not an infinite amount of time. See comments.
I'll try to rant quicker this time. Whuoh, here we go.
I need your help. I know, this is really meta, but it's what I really need currently. I've been listing A LOT of topics to rant about, and there doesn't seem to be an end insight.
What I need is opinions about them, what I should do next and if this makes any sense. I need priority. Should I just start blogging?
I can share a link to a copy of the CalDAV if needed.8
me: what are your opinions about that job post? 😀😀
IT friend: that's ridiculous! ! , they ask for being proficient in 5 programming languages. 😲😲
me : 😮😮
IDE battle--- what is everyone using?
My main languages are- C# - laravel - node/angular - HTML/ CSS. And use git / aws.
I have used the following- and like / hate them all. :) but I want to see what others are using and opinions on them.
Visual studio- bla...
Sublime 2 & 3
Coda(s) 2 - 2.5
Okay I'm not trying to start a comment war or anything, but Im struggling. I want to learn PHP but im already great with python and can just learn flask.. Is there any advantages to learn both because I probably will do that I just wanted to hear some opinions.7
I'm looking for a nice Raspberry Pi kit to host my bots (Discord / Twitter) but I never used one so I don't know which to choose. Someone has an "expertise" to give?9
Being on devrant has made me realise just how different peoples opinions/preferences are! Someone rants about one thing and then the comments are either defense, agreement, or "you're both wrong, this is why" 😂😂2
Been doing java for years now, and finally got to trying out an IDE. Been using VIM and notepad++ for ages, and tried Netbeans. It honestly frustrates me, is this where it's at, or is there something a bit more user friendly? Google yes I know, but Googles opinions are about as reliable as Bill Clinton around Monica Lewinski6
Anyone else going to get one of the new pixel phones as well?
If so, why?
Please no negativity just want other peoples opinions on the pixel 2 :-)8
Opinions on npm inquirer. I can never decide, in some ways its super convenient. But sometimes debugging the weirdness pissed me off. I think it's pretty good for what it is, but something a lot better has got to be out there. What do you all think?
IDEs vs Text Editors? Wanted to get your opinions.
IDE- code suggestion(auto completion), easier to configure build options
Text editors- minimalistic and...?12
Do we have any C# devs who have switched to Scala?
I've got a very sweet job offer... at a company that develops in Scala. On the one hand, I'm pretty pleased with my depth of C# knowledge, for a variety of reasons. And I've been targeting .Net shops in my job search.
They know Scala devs are rare, so they are aware they need to train new employees, which is nice. But I don't have strong opinions yet on whether this is a language I want to pivot to.
Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions/experiences?6
Ok let's get our hate and love out for the 3 main OS types, tell us why you hate or love each of them.
Windows: I hate its lack of customisation, colours and wallpapers only go so far, and how fucking bloated it is and how little you can do about it.
Linux: it's open, free, and pretty much a sandbox for changes and is lightweight, plus if you don't like something about it, remove it, whats not to love!
MacOS: I love it because it just works and could also run on a potato (yeah I said it, fight me) and it's just a very good looking is with fluid animations and simplicity.
Now, don't be hating on people's opinions here so keep it civil :-P13
I'm thinking about getting a small "Hello, World!" tattoo on my wrist. Any opinions? Am I going to regret this?18
Has anyone ever user GuixSD here before? If so, how did you like it? How was the transition from GNU-Linux/macOS/Windows?
Just found out that this is a thing and wanted to try it out, but before that hearing some opinions might be nice.4
Is it just me who thinks python Kivy is an annoying piece of shit to use? I mean, I'm fairly novice so this may br easy but the pong tutorial they have didn't explain the steps they took and point 0,0 is the bottom left rather than the top left. I get that it uses the Kv files and stuff but it's a pain in the ass to learn. I used pygame instead :/ kinds regretting not committing.. your opinions on it?2
I just read about the 'Learn to Code' nonsense. It seems some journalists told coal miners to learn coding for a living. Wtf.. As a person doing formal CS education after 1 year of work, i take offense for that comment. Coding jobs are dragged to the ground by these comments which imply that coding is a no skill, for everyone job. Opinions ?3
For private repos (<5 members):
Bitbucket vs Gitlab
I'd be glad to hear your opinions.
btw: VSTS is out of the game. Crap.12
I just released a demo for this game-sort-of-thing I'm working on. Would love to know your opinions/criticism.
Playable on any device.21
Since we're all doing unpopular opinions lately: tabs and spaces are not only interchangeable, but is most readable when mixed on one line.
Instead of 4 spaces or one tab, try 2 spaces, 1 tab, and another space for good measure!3
How many of you watched Google's live event? What are your opinions on the new Google pixel 2? Honestly I was kinda disappointed.13
What's your opinion about the 2012 Macbook Pro (13")?
I'm currently in midschool and I going to listen Computer Science next year in the local university. (I'm from Hungary.)
I want to buy a laptop (maybe a secondhand one), and a friend of mine suggested this model, but I never used a Mac or OSX, I'm a Windows/Linux&PC guy.10
I got many reasons to hate my old Dell Studio-1557, but if there is one thing I love about it, it is its keyboard. I don't have much technical keyboard knowledge, but it's just comfortable for me. Wide keys and short keystrokes, no gaps between them (keys are actually sloped on the edge and fit together) and most importantly, no num pad.
So now that i feel it needs to be retired after 9 yrs of loyalty, i can't find a successor for it that have my old Studio's keyboard-feel. Most of laptops in the market have small keys with orthogonal edges and lots of space wasted as gaps between them (like new Dells), a useless (for me) num pad and worst of all, small miniature arrow keys (like thinkPad) and other navigations seems to be new designers fashion.
I'd be glad if some one introduce me a laptop with a similar keyboard to mine (in the picture)
Or what do you propose, should i care about the keyboard at all? are these new designs easy to take up with? wouldn't i suffer a keyboardalgia?
edit: no macs btw :)5
When you do work on a front end ticket. You implement the things as UX tells you to, make a few mistakes, fix those as well when QA catches them.
But then UX realizes other improvements they can make , so you toss some of those in and move some of the other shit to tech debt to avoid possibly failing the sprint due to rabbit hole of front end awfulness because you suck at your job.
Then later somebody else a couple degrees above you in job hierarchy, notes a couple tips and things you could fix unrelated to your ticket. But when will it ever end or do. I suck and hate front end work, AY LMAO LEMME SUBMIT THE SAME SHIT WHICH RENDERS DIFFERENTLY BETWEEN CHROME vs CHROMIUM AND EVERYTHING THAT USES CHROMIUM.1
Some time ago Ex-Boss, who's also a Dev, asks for some opinions about which JS framework we should use in our next project. I gave my 2 cents about react JS and he said no, react won't be any good, we must use Aurelia because it is backed up by Rob etc etc. At that moment I thought: wth is he asking, if he has already made its mind on Aurelia? As at that moment react was getting some hype and I knew the features and advantages, I kept going. Boss, react has shadow DOM. React has this, it has that etc. This discussion ended up with him raising his voice, telling me he is much more experienced than me and telling me to GTFO. That's what I did. And thanks God I did it. I respect other opinions and beliefs but If I'm asked to give my own opinion I will, even if they don't like it.
(Mobile) Devs, how important do you see joining a company before starting your own Business? I have been into android for a year now and freelancing for 6 months. I want to start a company and sell some apps B2B. My girlfriend however says it would be better to join a company first and get enterprise experience, I dont see the point becausw nowadays there are countless of blogs and videos in the internet that teach you anything you want to know. Opinions?4
I want to share a small model in my iOS app. Now on android I'd do with with ViewModelProviders, but on iOS I'm going with SharedDataContainer which is basically a singleton class that store key value data.
Is there any better approach? Data will not be bigger than 10 list items with guid (key) and int (value)
However; when I have big data I do cache on disk or hello OOM exceptions (or whatever they call that bitch on iOS)
What's the software/hardware/plugins that has become integrated part of your working structure?
Stuff that immediately gets includes on any machine you use and can't imagine working w/o?5
How about ' What tech/framework/language do you trust will truly stand the test of time' ? Sorry if someone has already suggested this but I would love to see opinions.2
Hello Guys, I am in a dilemma whether I should update my Laptop to Windows 10 Fall Creator Update or not. Any honest opinions or recommendations from Devs?
(posed to Windows Users)7
I was thinking about Sublime Text and VS Code just today. Now I'm not much aware of history of editors but the moment I've installed vs code I thought "Microsoft has ripped all its ideas in vs code from the sublime guy, a sole developer of a free app" and I was pissed. But today I had a second thought, "maybe sublime guy had his ideas from another editor too" which I really doubt it. I need to know other people opinions on this, so hence the rant.13
Has anyone here tried to run Linux on a Dell Latitude 7480? And if so, how'd it go?
I can't decide on what laptop I want for Christmas, it's either a XPS 13 or a Latitude 7480. I know the xps has good Linux support but the 7480 seems to be a mixed bag. If I choose the xps, I'd have to get some dongles as well sine it doesn't even have a HDMI port. Opinions? 🤔6
So I just heard that Bitcoins are illegal in my country. Like WTF? This is outrageous! Are you that much of a control freak that you couldn't allow a cryptocurrency to run, government? You and your taxes and shits!!! Ughhhh!
On another note, the cryptocurrency is indeed growing its boundaries. What are your opinions on it? Do you think maybe one day it will replace all conventional form of currency as we know it today? If yes, how long will it take?6
Stackoverflow is great but sometimes I want to ask 'bad' questions. Questions that cannot be answered. I just want to see opinions no matter how biased. Maybe this is the place? Or is there somewhere else?
btw anyone know if there is any is a decent free ui for mongoDB that works with Atlas?2
Our company's first open source project: https://github.com/digineers/...
It's a Symfony bundle that enables logging changes to entities to allow simple mutation logging systems.
Would love to read some of your opinions :)1
Since I see a lot of mixed opinions all over the place; is Python considered to be a "douche bag" language? :S
It just makes me feel self-conscious since that's the language I'm by far most familiar with... :( Should I consider focusing on another language instead?9
I want to learn a scripting language, and can't decide which one.
Python, Ruby, Lua, something completely different ?
I want to hear your opinions.11
I have job interview next week! Do you have any advice that can help me? :) (position: FrontEnd Dev)9
What are your opinions on this? Seems pretty Orwellian to me....
As you guys probably know, Yowsup (Whatsapp via python) is going to die 1st June 2017. RIP :(
Is there another internet messaging service I can use to send commands to my computer (and get responses) over the internet? I'm looking at Slack, Telegram, etc. daeomons or something. Any (any) opinions?8
I hate windows, the fucking constant updates and restarts as soon as I start working.
I have been wanting to make the change for a while now but I would like to ask the community first, which Linux distro should I start with? I understand most basic bash commands and am fine navigating the command line, but would love to hear people's opinions. Thanks!6
Never had a real fight referring to any development - stuff, because most devs around me are more experienced and most of the time I can see the point in their opinions. I definitely had some discussions about some constructs in C++ for example. But thats it.
Not a rant, but I'd love to see three top notch developers, doing a coding challenge, in the same language, without any text editors, IDE's, compilers ( other than pre-installed ones ) when they start, working on 'their' most unfamiliar OS; the three OS options being Linux, Windows & OSX.
Any opinions on who might complete first?6
First post woo
So I need some opinions guys...
Just started a new job and they are trying to force me to use eclipse rather than IntelliJ (which I have used for a good while )
I have asked for their reasoning and they simply say it's so everyone is using the same thing in the team , I think this is a pretty crap reason , especially when all the projects are created in maven , what do you all think ? Am I being unreasonable ? P.S I pay for the license myself6
I'm want to hear other Dev's opinions on this week's weekly group rant! Do you find that the "worst projects" are caused the most by:
A) Poor solution design and/or terrible-idea-to-start-with
B) Poor process and/or terrible project management
C) Working with terrible teammates/customers6
Searched on various forums, everyone seems to have conflicting opinions.
If I want hibernation to work correctly on my laptop , do I need to allocate swap equal to RAM (some are also saying double 😥) I have 16 gigs of RAM, so allocating 32 gigs (or 16 gigs) swap seems like a waste of space. Will do only if absolutely necessary.
I am running manjaro KDE by the way7
Ok so I'm new to git and am wondering whether or not to move my repo's from github to gitlab, are there any major benefits to moving it?4
Last week I've been really wanting to start learning a new language. Not the programming type but the original type. Mainly for career opportunities, as I am getting into 2nd year of a 5 year cs curriculum.
Already know : English, Greek (native)
Currently deciding between:
Chinese (not Korean, maybe Japanese?)
What do you guys think of forced linters (checkStyle) on java assignments?
At this University we have a submission system that checks for your code where if a line didn't match the coding specification then it's an instant zero.
Being experienced in programming before going to a university, this somewhat surprised me, it also has unit tests implemented in it where it checks against input and output.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Is it too much for people who unlike me never seen code before? Or let them have hell and understand how to deal with it? I personally think it's too much for beginners.3
Hello fellow devs, first post here but absolutely love this community!
Has anyone got advice for doing casual freelance work alongside a day job? I'm currently looking at sites like Fiverr and Upwork and would love to hear your advice/experiences/opinions.5
Still not sold by OO, but I'm hook line and sinker for pharo/smalltalk.
It actually seems to share a lot of fundamentals with Lisp namely extremely tight syntax and live code reloading.
My opinions of a productive language being dependant on a specific paradigm might be changing in favour of the tooling supplied with a technology/language.
I need opinions: Amazon Fire Stick or Google Chromecast?
I want Hulu, Netflix, Crunchy Roll, Amazon Prime TV, and WWE Network.
I welcome all opinions. Remote strength, price, ease of use, and stability are my main concerns.
I also might jail break it and/or try to develop apps for it.
Sorry if a repost but this is a random thought from an alcohol addled mind.
I would use a laptop on every tv, but cost vs benefit says no.3
So here's alot of talk about Arch and so on. I am originally Windows user, but converting to Linux more and more every day. I've been using Ubuntu almost for a year and Fedora for 2 months.
I want to know why Arch is so popular and why should I try it out. I see no point why should I, but I want to know you, guys, opinions about Arch.3
Rumor has it that Apple is ditching the startup chime.
Fuck you apple. In the name of innovation you have ruined yourself.
[personal opinions in the comments]4
Curious about people's opinions on CMS's. I feel like charging people thousands of dollars for a WordPress page seems unreasonable but it seems to be a common thing.4
Anybody at Neumont FReX tmr in Salt Lake City? Chhbooi is visiting, I'd also love to know people's opinions about the school.
So I'd like to see some opinions on different editors and IDEs.
I personally use Atom, and I really dig all the functionality and packages it has available. What do you use and why? Hear a lot of suggestions for VSCode and the like... and it looks cool but does it do anything Atom can't? They all seem fairly similar to me in the long run if you take the time to set them up the way you like.14
Developed a library in node.js for battery information in Windows OS a month ago.
Give your valuable suggestion / opinions.2
I am now thinking of introducing a new self imposed rule of breaking functions up when they go above 10 lines to ensure I don't have too much happening as I often don't make small enough reusable parts and my code gets too complex. Opinions?10
I'm thinking of getting rid of 6 - 8 hrs straight sleep with polyphasic sleep cycle to increase productivity.
Anyone here follow this? Any tips or opinions about this?3
!rant Planning on writing a document editor in Electron for linux as I believe the lack of these tools is why a lot of users dont use linux despite its awesomeness. Opinions ?5
Could a mobile application such as, facebook (well a minimum version or it), twitter, devrant etc., be built using the MEAN stack (using ionic framework). Or is really ionic very slow?
Or do we need React Native "for better performance"? thus ME[R]N stack?
I am confused, and every article i read says something else.
What are you devs using these days? i need some opinions here.
F*** this sh*t (now my post is a rant)4
Anyone pair up their CS or SE degree with a second degree as an undergrad? What was it? Was it worth it? What made you decide to add a second degree?
I’m currently an undergrad and I’m really liking philosophy and English literature and enjoy the writing and critical thinking/discussions that comes with the classes, but I’m not sure if it’s worth getting a degree in it or not. If I do pursue it I’m definitely leaning more towards philosophy.2
Just going through LastPass, came across some... strange entries in the site match for Instagram... Or is 'importing_from_installer' and '(null)' some new domain name convention?
P.S any opinions on LastPass?10
Team building exercises... Curious to hear your opinions....
They annoy the hell out of me personally and I can't see the value in them...
Have bonded way more with previous teams by simply working on a project together. No BS exercises, or even scrum for that matter, we just respected each other and that seemed to effortlessly let us make each other better at our work.1
Where why opinions and thoughts are considered and not just dismissed. Truly sucks not being able to have any input on what your working on
Want an unbiased opinion here. Have any of you worked with GCP? How s the experience? Is it worth investing time on to learn? I’m thinking of adding it to my tool belt. Any opinions for or against are welcome.8
Finance student currently doing a diploma...hoping to do I.T degree in university because felt it maybe useful in finance industry in the future.
This should sound like a no-brainer but I need some opinions. Is it worth it to use a pi-top instead of buying a laptop? For programming on the road, i'll just squeeze in a commit while traveling, ill just code instead of talk to my uncle in this reunion, quick commit while le gf is cooking, etc..., purposes? Are the disadvantages worth it enough for the advantages? I was hoping for an overall general programming companion including IoT.4
What is everyones opinions on declaring class constructors as 'final'?
Could use some feedback experience, pros/cons?
I'm building a hobby MVC-like framework inspired by OpenCart, where the default controller method is "index" rather then "__construct"
Keep in mind i'm only writing code towards the latest supported PHP versions, so PHP4 style constructors are not of concern.
!rant => question?
So.. What are you guys's opinions? We're not looking at millions of users, but it will have feeds, comments, connections, messages, post scopes,.. Etc. RethinkDB looks promising with the 'watchers' to get live data instantly, but it's a whole new way of query'ing and such.. It just feels like I'm wasting my time because I'm afraid that I'll reach a point in development where I'll have a situation for example like "damn.. This is impossible with angular or php.." [I've shouldn't have agreed to this project..] :D1
Okay so I want other opinions. So I've been studying for C++ competition and I don't know how to keep learning the language.. for python I just kept finding projects to do or picked a module to learn. But with C++ I was gonna work on the <random> and <string> libraries but after that I have no clue :/13
Do you guys recommend the CODE keyboard from WASD? I would like to buy one, but before I need some opinions. Is it worth that much money?7
Is Dropbox safe to use? They had big security problems back then. I don't want to use Google Drive so Dropbox is one alternative. I want to be sure that this is not a mistake tho. Opinions?14
I need professional advice. Or at least informed opinions.
I recently competed in a hackathon and won. My team wants to commercialize our idea. I'm worried that since we publicly displayed it, that the I.P. rights are a little "in the air". We NEVER verbally gave anyone the rights, and the rules of the hackathon don't even mention the words.
What would a legally savvy person do?3
People's opinions requested. What is the difference between a 'software engineer' and a 'software developer'?4
Need some opinions, what error reporting tool do you guys use? I used bugsnag before. Now I found a bunch of them I can't seem to decide which one to go for. Thanks in advance 😣😣2
These people I'm working with won't stop arguing. If it weren't for a teacher staring me down, I'd say this:
"Shut the FUCK up for FIVE SECONDS. 90% of the shit you people say is STARTING AN ARGUMENT.
HEY, DICKHEADS! HERE'S A TIP: STOP BEING SO UPTIGHT AND ACTUALLY LISTEN TO IDEAS, CONSIDER OTHERS OPINIONS, AND TRY *WORKING TOGETHER.*
I'M SURROUNDED BY *IDIOTS*."
I am a third year computer science student and I'm interested to see how professionals think I stack up against grads they have worked with straight from uni.
I am reasonable at PHP and MySQL. Currently I am studying node.js and building an api that mashes up data from other APIs to build a new service. I'm also working on a C# Microsoft framework bespoke website. I know git to a reasonable level - branches, merges, rollbacks and all that jazz.
I am also studying development architectures to try and be more useful.
Point to note I'll probably graduate first class (80%+) from a mid range uni.
Sorry, I know this is not the place but I like this community.5
What do you do and why?
1. Keep an idea for yourself, so no one is going to steal it.
2. Talk to as many people as possible to get as much feedback and opinions as possible.
I personally prefer 2.
How about you?5
TLDR: Opinions of area of interest between these subjects (specializations):
2 Programming languages
3 Business analytics
4 Pervasive computing
Hi, I'm about to choose specialisation of my software development masters. I'm almost certain what I'll go with (algorithms), but I wondered what other people thought and would choose if they had the opportunity. I'm still not too experienced in all of these areas, making the choice a bit hard :-)4
Fellow devs, I want to hear your opinions on Scrum and daily stand up meetings. Do you think they're necessary?
God, I really hate that I'm required to participate in a meeting EVERY FUCKING DAY.6
I'd like to read your opinions about having a Master and or a PhD to develop cool machine learning projects. Do you think I could achieve great things without them? What advantages do you believe having those degrees have?4
What font do you guys use in your editor?
I have always used consolas but lately I have really gotten used to fonts like NSimSun, GulimChe or MSGothic which are a bit more edgy and aliased, which honestly goes pretty well with code imo5
Is it me, or ReactNative just doesn't like working on Windows?
I've tried to get it working a couple of years ago (rn with redux and flux), but without success.
disclaimer: This was before expo (the client) was a thing, and also reactnative itself was really young. Has anyone tried it recently? Any opinions?
Since then I've moved to MacOS, and it worked perfectly (same versions) => not an apple fanboy, so I would like to go back to windows2
My head is about to explode... Trying to wrap my head around the best way for integrating a suitable frontend solution with a symfony backend.
So many implications, so many opinions, so many possibilities.. A very big project, a lot of requirements, a very small team and most of the colleagues have their main focus on backend development though..
Feeling lost currently, not really sure how to approach this huge topic 😥4
Send the agenda with the invite
Invite only those who can make decisions not those with only opinions
Stick to the agenda
Make the decision at the end of the meeting and stick to it.
Begins and end on time
If the decision can be made without a meeting (like via email) then do so.
How should i able to develop/solve bugs when there are multiple people testing and everybody has different opinions, or are looking at cached environments?!
Anybody got experience with Rancher (https://rancher.com) on Ubuntu?
Checked it out and it looks really well made. You can build a Cluster in Minutes and mount a phyisical storage to it.
Im planning to drop a Full Stack Root Server with it and would be really glad to hear on your opinions 😁3
Your opinions about xamarin? I <3 it but I have to deal at least 2h a day with fixing xamarin related problems. Currently working on "ResolveLibraryProjectImport task failed unexpectedly" -.-1
It may not be the place to do so but I need your opinions.
I already said that but I would like to switch from Windows to Linux but I don't know which distrib to choose. For long time I was up to some Debian/Ubuntu but now I feel like going Arch ou Deepin.
Have you guys tried some of those? Do you liked it?
And please, I'm not trying to start world war three here! Have a little "courtoisie" and please be gentle with me I'm still a noob in all this (already tried Ubuntu tho' and didn't liked the Gnome graphics).7
I need your help. I'm currently deciding on setting up a proper multi-monitor set up (inspired by the ones you guys have) at home so I can be better productive since my current "desk" at home is actually my bed (I have a dual monitor set-up at work). I have decided on two monitor choices.
My current budget is around LKR 25,000 (USD 155) per month without it eating into my living expenses (welp, i'm poor 😢).
Do you think I should go for:
2x Dell P2214H 22" monitors in 1 month - LKR 23,600 (USD 146) (per month for one month)
2x ASUS VZ249H Frameless 23.8" monitors in 2 months - LKR 25,000 (USD 155) (per month for two months)
I would really really appreciate your opinions on this.5
@all, picture the scene, your employer hired a Dev into an equal level role to you, he was running his own company, handed off to his father and brother. You now hear your employer is purchasing 40% in said company to outsource 'certain' projects too (off shore developers). You don't really rate this developers skills AND the work so far from this outsourced group has been sub par. How does this make you feel? What issues do you perceive? Am i right to feel concerned?5
I want to setup my pc with Linux/windows double boot but I don't have the slightest idea which distribution to use. I tried Ubuntu some years ago, but that just didn't seem to be my style.
What do you use and why?12
Sooooooo just got into Discorddd looking for groups and friends? Mostly devs and dev groups and meme groups about devs lol.. any options out there? All is appreciated. Lol7
I'm just wondering how much a cs degree from a South African university holds up internationally ,different opinions all around1
Opinions please. When end user is not paying for service, who is my customer? For example public facing government project2
Which development standards and coding styles would you recommend in a development team? My colleague @jacoKotze and I are starting to get larger projects at work and 2 more developers soon (juniors with little to no experience), so we'll need some coherence soon.
Tabs v spaces is more of a joke, looking for opinions on other things please.12
How does Kotlin compare to Java? Got experience / opinions worth sharing about them?
Always wanted to make some android apps as hobby but Java was grossing me out.4

People likes it, is it useful, is it good or there are better alternatives?
Would like to know the opinions of those who know about it :]7
I heard I should not allow users to inject arbitrary text into my webpage without sanitizing it. Is it a clean solution to just eval it on the (node) server, and if it runs not post it because it's obviously JS and not just text?
Any opinions on that?11
Any one thoughts/opinions about Azure Service Bus? I'm using it a few months now in combination with a redis cache, cloud storage and the service bus.. works pretty nice so far..
I'm pretty impressed about the upgrade mechanism..
First of all, I need you to forgive me for what I'm doing to do...
So, for webdev, Ruby or Python?
Opinions, thoughts, tips, are all welcome.
- I know these kind of choose A or B questions make me a horrible person, but what can I do. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -5
Any opinions on using Entity Framework vs Dapper for an API for a vue SPA Web app?
I have used both, and it seems it is a trade off of more control vs convenience.4
Started watching the first season of Mr Robot. But I got bored by the end of the fourth episode; don't get the flow of the story; plus too much nudity and like genders kissing is gross. 😔😣
Opinions on taking initiative and the expression of "easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission", when are the use cases, is it just a way to try and squeeze more work out of people in the Hope's they move fast and make cool minimum viable prototypes and stuff? Is it pointless until you have the skillz to do it properly/well?1
I want to develop a simple reminders service. People will go online and set a reminder and the service will send an email when the reminder is schedule.
I want to use the simplest stack I can. It will be very simple so I don't want anything complex.
So I need a DB backend, a server to host the web interface so people can set up the reminders, and a background process that send out the emails.
People set up reminders, they are stored in the DB and the process read the reminders every X amount of time and send the emails scheduled in that particular time.
I was thinking about using Firebase (only tried it once in a small chat app for practice). A small web interface stored in a server (which? idk. Heroku, AWS?). And a deamon scheduled to run every half an hour (running where? idk. I have a spare laptop that I can use as server for this purpose or Heroku or any other).
What services (free, or at least free at the beginning) would you use in order to save time and money.
PS: I know Python and Java. But I've worked with PHP (and HTML+CSS). I know next to nothing about JS.11
Has anyone here tried nim lang?
I have been intrigued by it, but not sure if it will stay around for the long run. I believe they have been trying to reach v 1.0 for a while, but it is taking longer than expected.
Would be interested your opinions :)
there was a post about banning of Alex Jones and a pretty interesting discussion unravelled under it.
To those who participated, and are interested in the topic, I recommend watching this video with new information, kind of proving my point from that discussion and elaborating on it.
(For example, Mastercard is now revoking cards from people with... "incorrect opinions", it seems)
lets try something new...
anyone have any opinions on muLinux? or any super small distros like that?1
Opinions on recruiters? Who has gotten a great job from a recruiter that reached out to them? Is it true that they tend to fill jobs that are hard to fill?4

My essay company wants to add new sections to our company website.
I`m wondering if it`s difficult for programmers to write essays and do you actually need it.
No spam, just gathering opinions. Thanks3
I was discussing with fellow students at college level about which technology to focus for web dev. Angular, React or Vue.Js. Would like to know external opinions about that :) any advices?5
I'm thinking of getting a Mac for development purposes. I have a PC currently. Any opinions on what I should get or anything I should know before hand?5
recently, I was working on a project to playback archived call recordings, and another developer was hired. part of my job is also to support a third party automation framework for customers, so I got "seconded" to support a proof of concept. the original project had now been messed up, it works, however, the functionality that made it secure has been MASSIVELY compromised for the sake of effort. I've tried to cause a stink as we have a major customer who will fail the next PCI audit. opinions on the situation. the other developer has a lot more experience, but seems to have chosen to satisfy management on deadlines over the original spec...
Are their any code bootcamp sorta deals that are actually worth the time and money? I've heard a lot of mixed opinions on them

Need your opinions fellas.
I've been wondering something lately: how would one go about creating a secure evoting system?
In 1,5 month there will be elections in the Netherlands. In 2009 the government tried to introduce an evoting system, which was blocked. But behind the scenes, the system is still used. But this system is an absolute piece of shit. (https://sijmen.ruwhof.net/weblog/...)
What are your opinions on evoting? What issues do you see? And what would need to be done to get your trust in such a system?2
