Me, flirting with a cute girl from the finance dept. in the kitchen:
"Well, back to the grind. I've got this really nasty bug to figure out."
Her: "It's a bracket."
2 hours of debugging later… it was a missing bracket in a json string. 😓11
Something I grind my teeth on very hard just recently,
Mum: son, why does this always showing up on my phone (a Samsung J something)
*sent a screenshot of some antivirus adware opening on chrome
Me: mum, that might be a virus, how long has it been happening?
Mum: I don't know, a month probably, since your nephew always uses it to play games, BTW it automatically opens up everytime I open whatsapp
Me: *facepalm, and you never thought to tell me until now?
Mum: I never thought it would be, and also i got this recently
*screenshot of some SMS from shady subscription, notifying some failure in subscribing whatever it is they are offering
Me: *double facepalm, let's put that aside for now, that adware seems to be happening on Chrome, can you try to remove the tabs
*spent 2 hours to instruct on how to close chrome tabs
Me: ok, just go to my friend's place (he own a phone store, and he did the fixes & repairs himself), bring it to him, I'll tell him the situation.
Mum: ok, maybe tomorrow, I can't today,
Mum: it's still happening, the thing keeps popping up
Me: then maybe you should go to my friend's place ASAP *me starting to lose patience
Mum: but it's ok, your sister uninstalled the Chrome
Me: *triple facepalm, [FFS sis, you are an IT major], so where does it pops up now?
*screenshot of popup ad from default browser
*screenshot of the apps installed in the phone, there are 25+ of those shitty minecraft shooter game installed on it
Mum: it pops up from different one than before, but your sister also deleted it just now
Me: *cries, mum..., please..., go..., to..., my friend's..., place...., AS SOON AS YOU CAN, for now please delete EVERYTHING game related in that thing
Mum: ok, I'll remove it, I'll head over to your friend's maybe tomorrow
Me: thank you, very, much
...5 minutes later
Sis: Maybe I should give mum my Iphone, Samsung is awful, this never happened on Iphone before
Me: *shuts off my phone30
A computer engineer, a systems analyst, and a programmer were driving down a mountain when the brakes gave out. They screamed down the mountain, gaining speed, and finally managed to grind to a halt, more by luck than anything else, just inches from a thousand foot drop to jagged rocks. They all got out of the car.
The computer engineer said, “I think I can fix it.”
The systems analyst said, “No, I think we should take it into town and have a specialist look at it.”
The programmer said, “I think we should push it back up the hill and see if it does it again.6
I started programming with just pen and paper, and remained this way for 2 whole years! ☺
I was in a boarding school without any access to internet or any PC/laptop save the computer lab which was only to be entered during the computer practical classes. It was a grind to write code on paper, dry run it, debug it and sometimes rewrite it nicely so its easy to punch it into the computer when I got the limited time in the practical classes! It made me write code cleanly, think it through before penning it down, and debug by just staring hard at it.
Its amazing how our mind can adapt to such difficult situations and makes it so it becomes a second nature to look and simulate code in our minds without bias, a trait I see rare among beginner programmers ☺16

You want to know what really grinds my gears?
When you are about to tap on some link or whatever on your phone and the app/website with its 8th sense sees that and right before you touch the touch screen, it either moves the content or displays an advertisement so you inADvertently tap it instead of what you wanted to tap.
I hope the people responsible for this sorcery get mutilated and eaten by a horde of zombified liliputs.2
It has officially been 1 year since I first became a professional developer. I am 100% sure I wouldn't have survived any of it if it wasn't for everyone here.
At first I felt great, it was something I love doing and I was being paid to do it.
Soon, it became an issue as I was the only developer and I was so so inexperienced. I had so much to learn in so little time and I'm fairly certain it's aged me about 5 years, maybe more.
There was a long period in the middle when my depression kicked the fuck back in. I was in such a state of stress and panic and just sadness that I very nearly just stopped functioning.
But then I found DevRant. I found out I wasn't alone. That these thoughts of inadequacy were, strangely, quite normal and that it would all get better. Well, it did!
I have progressed and grown so much as a developer and as a human being because of people on here and that's just through rants and comments! It's insane to think about.
I just needed to know that I wasn't actually alone. That I wasn't in a dark corner, struggling against this mammoth new world I had so little preparation for and no help with.
So to anyone out there who feels the same. It's going to be okay. Don't let it all get to you too much or it'll just grind you down. You are amazing and you will get through whatever it is that's led you to this dark place.
I seriously love so many parts of the community here. You guys are the best!4
I love coding, solving challenges or making something. But the current state of most of the jobs in the industry is sad, specially in this part of the world. I am stressed out and depressed when stuck in a never ending daily grind.
There are days when I seriously consider the idea of leaving the industry and start my own restaurant or cafe. It feels like coding for fun and doing something else for a living could be better.
Am I overthinking this? Are there any other people who are feeling the same?17
If nobody hates you, you're doing something wrong ~ House MD
Tl;Dr : I'm pissing the right people off and my God I like it
That's what I've known and have confirmed doing my current side project with my gf, we are working on a ratemyprofessors clone with extra spicy features, one in particular is so spicy some teachers will be put in a position in which they would rather grind hot peppers with their butt cheeks.
Don't get me wrong, there are good teachers (some of which actually showed support) but some are not good teachers and some aren't good people either; I've decided it's time to stop complaining and take action.
We recently released an alpha and I presented it to a teacher I had this semester (one of the "not so great" kind) as a DB proyect cuz fuck it I'm not doing 2 projects.
This teacher is your run of the mill "I'm lazy and I don't care" teacher and she ran the classroom like a shitty kindergarten, so much so, one of the teams was presenting a buggy admin site as their project and she started talking on the phone! Right up on their faces!!
My turn, I go up and handle her a 30 page printed thesis of my project and said that unlike my mates, I was going to start presenting the idea and then the actual software...why is it printed?, She said; Because I won't be projecting the PDF ma'am, I actually made a professional presentation and that way you can read more technical details while I give a broad overview...
I started talking about the huge issues students face and my research about it, undisciplined teachers, no class structure ~ abrupt interruption ~ "yeah I know like, you are giving so much statistics and numbahs but where is the database?"
I got pissed off because the whole purpose of printing and giving her the docs was for her to ask specific questions AT THE END! So I told her I was getting there and to ask questions at the end...I start showing off the system's sweetest features... everyone got quiet...a girl on the front row kept looking at the teacher and then back to the board with her eyes wide open, the teacher was visibly upset.
I asked someone to please help me by using the site being projected for everyone to see, he searched the teacher's name and it obviously popped up cuz I scrapped the whole teacher index site... some people gasp and others start murmuring.
She freaked and started arguing saying that frontend can't be just HTML and CSS, where did you mentioned x and y feature? admit it's just teacher evaluations! where did you get the teacher names? I want the scripts!....it went on even 10 minutes after class and the next class with a police like interrogation.
So yeah, something tells me I'm not getting an A, but I'm happy after all because that's the kind of reaction I want from those types of professors.
Worth it 😎11
So new PM is forcing everyone to use Google sheets as our main project management tool as it's free and does what she likes... Was so close to just quitting.
More rage: how the fudge does she think it's acceptable for every 'to-do' no matter how big or small needs to be recorded in a sheet with roughly 30 columns @#&#&£ work is going to grind to a halt whilst we fill it in. So many better tools to use! Oh it gets worse it's 1 sheet per a person so the longer you work there the bigger the sheet gets the more time you need to spend to find, record and even open the freaking document up.14
SO. FUCKING. TIRED. Deadline looming. Burnt out. To everyone else just starting their daily grind: Have a good day.1
This is a rant about having nothing to rant about because I'm so busy working on projects. The grind is just... grind-y.3
Me trying to get an edge in Bloodborne be like,
Spent the whole afternoon figuring out what to do with all the hex values in the save game file.
I'm too lazy to grind out blood echoes (in game equivalent of money, for those who don't know), not that I had any difficulties with it (all those times playing monster hunter finally paid off).
*copy saves to flash drive
*open in hex editor
*find current amount of blood echoes in hex value
.....1109 instances found
*tries to find a pattern
*tries to change the value in the game hoping it would reduce the search
*repeat until evening5
Protip for those early in their career.
You want to have something that genuinely refreshes you, and you want to do that thing regularly. Eventually you will reach a grind where you will lose the motivation to keep on keeping on, and that thing is what you will need.
For myself, it is programming things that I do not understand, and learning new things. I do not find myself rejuvenated from interacting with others, from having fun, partying, or anything like that.
I feel rejuvenated by actively researching and running experiments. I find it so wonderfully interesting being able to just look at something and monitor what happens when you tweak it. The the exhilaration of being able to learn something through experimentation makes anything worth while.
You need to find something that is like that for you, and helps you refresh like this.
If you do not do this, you are likely to stagnate, not learn anything new, and become miserable. There's nothing worse than going into work dreading doing something that you used to love.4
Felt like a real badass in middle school when I made my first .bat script that would recursively open itself. Took only two words. Four if you wanted exponential recursion rather than linear. And I came up with it by myself.
Cheesiest thing ever, but I really loved freaking people out by opening it and just watch windows grind to a halt as it would run out of ram opening thousands of terminal windows. Hell, it still gives me a kick today when I show it to people the first time :D7
After work and everyday I used all the free/lowcost learning resources i could get my hands on. GRIND, GRIND, GRIND! Never give up! I used to come home after working construction from 7am to 9-11pm, shower, code til 3am, repeat. I didnt have the luxury of a single day off for months on end. Even an hour a night is one hour closer to your dreams each day 🖒🖒🖒
Also to keep you/me motivated I made an awesome high spirited music playlist, look at your life then look at the music videos and realize as a developer that could be your reality. God Bless!
Code Music: https://youtu.be/xp2qjshr-r4/...1
Can we stop down-voting things for no reason, it's really starting to grind at me as we have worked hard to make this community awesome.10
It's interesting that AAA games are becoming analogous to pop music, as they relate to the medium of which they are part. E3 is just a bunch of trailers for rushed sequels to existing, played-out franchises. The big price tags are almost universally not worth it, as these games typically release with major bugs, and often rely on grind-enforced microtransactions.
Meanwhile, indie games keep getting better, more innovative, and remain reasonably priced. Ubisoft, EA, Bethesda, Rockstar, and the rest of the big-budget studios can eat my ass.21
No suitable raspberry pi 64-bit distro.
Ok, I will build my own
Poor laptop, prepare for hours of gcc grind while we cross compile what we need 😛4
Read this. I'm so fucking tired of these startups and their fucking open spaces and their yoga and what have you.
So another story about college and stupid team assignments that I have to be responsible for dealing with.
So we had an assignment in operating systems 1 course, it was about memory management and we are a team of 3. Then came the time when we should discuss this assignment with the TA and that day I had to stay all night finishing a project in software engineering (literally giving us a description of a big project because that's what the course teaches And I had to finish it in one all nighter alone because my teammates just gave up).
When the discussion time came I was really tired and then the TA asks me something really simple and I say it but then she tells me that I'm wrong so I wondered a bit and then said no what I said was right! She then asks my teammate (who we are supposed to be good friends) "did he say the right thing?" And his answer is a definitive "NO he's wrong" and then he starts to say the right answer which I swear I said the same but in a different way so I start to say again that I was right and say that I said that just a different way and she took that as an insult and said that I'm shouting at her and being disrespectful to her.
When we finished I asked my friend if he heard me say it wrong and he said "I'm sorry but I didn't even hear what you said and I was afraid" WHAT THE FUCK, he just said that I was wrong to please her and make her feel like she is right and I had to be the wrong one even though I said it right but NOoo her pride is more important
All this was last semester and the second semester just started today and I go into operating system 2 and guess what? The TA got her doctorate and is now the professor for OS 2 when she doesn't even understand anything.
Really FUCK the academic system it feels like it is a grind more than actually gaining mastery of a subject.2
First Happy new year, now lets get put on the dancing shoes... (I have another one coming, but this one is fresh)
As a PHP developer (yeah I am and I like it, if you gonna hate on me... go fuck yourself) I expect to not be required to reinvent the wheel when I have to use something that is not too mainstream (in my case was producing JSON and XML HAL responses). Now there are 2 (fairly active and somewhat mature), one of which does not produce XML responses, so off I went with the other one, but for fucks sake it does not produce XML that is compliant with the (draft)RFC (https://tools.ietf.org/html/...)
So as I need that, I decided to write one myself, since extending the one that provided XML would've been a waste of time, since it is NOT documented and for some reason depends on about 4 packages (also developed by the same maintainer), why the whining you ask, eh? Well fuck this shit. It took me 2(+2 classes) to achieve everything (according to standard as far as I can tell) + went with using a "hydrator" as opposed to reflection (the lib used reflection and didn't care too much for the access modified on the property of the object being serialized) so got a pretty solid performance boost, cleaner and simple code (I wrote it for a few hours and it is ugly, but hey KISS and it works perfectly)...
So with the more ranty part of this rant... Why the fuck so many people don't write independant packages for the simple parts... I don't hate it when I need a package and end up downloading half of the codebase of symfony or whatever fancy framework the dev decided to use, wasn't it the point of having 'package managers' (composer, npm, etc.. you get the deal..) instead of promote our projects and not force others to use our favorite framework that is absolutely out of scope for their projects...
Fuck you, fuck me and fuck everybody... If this continues I will continue writing my own packages from scratch, because "you" asshole are too lazy to learn and apply SOLID and common sense; even if your life depends on it you cannot write a meaningful piece of code without "the fancy framework of the month" holding your hand and allowing you to continue being a dumbass that has enough brain cells to walk straight and remember that you have to go to the toilet and not shit all over the place....
FML.... Fuck this shit and that is the main reason my gears grind the most when I head "you should use *framework name* instead" or "don't reinvent the wheel", fuck that guy I refuse to work my ways around a framework in order to get things done, my boss aint happy for that shit you know, I don't get paid to deal with your crappy code or uninformed opinion..3
I love how some people at my University think that having barely passing grades will get them a job as a software dev as long as they have a degree... You need to grind that sh!t, degree by itself doesn't mean crap.6
Nice to do some refactoring of the whole data access layer of our core logistics software, let me tell an story.
The project is around 80k lines of code, with a lot of integrations with an ERP system and an sql database.
The ERP system is old, shitty api for it also, only static methods through an wrapper to an c++ library
imagine an order table.
To access an order, you would first need to open the database by calling Api.Open(...file paths) (yes, it's an fucking flat file type database)
Now the database is open, now you would open the orders table with method Api.Table(int tableId) and in return you would get an integer value, the pointer.
Now for the actual order. first you need to search for it by setting the search parameter to the column ID of the order number while checking all calls for some BS error code
Api.SetInt(int pointer, int column, int query Value)
Then call the find method.
Then to top this shitcake of an api of: if it doesn't find your shit it will use the "close enough" method of search.
And now to read a singe string 😑
First you will look in the outdated and incorrect documentation given to you from the devil himself and look for the column ID to find the length of the column.
Then you create a string variable with ALL FUCKING SPACES.
Now you call the Api.GetStr(int pointer, int column, ref string emptyString, int length)
Now you have passed your poor string to the api's demon orgy by reference.
Then some more BS error code checking.
Now you have read an string value 😀
Now keep in mind to repeat these steps for all 300+ columns in the order table.
News from the creators: SQL server? yes, sql is good so everything will be better?
Now imagine the poor developers that got tasked to convert this shitcake to use a MS SQL server, that they did.
Now I can honestly say that I found the best SQL server benchmark tool. This sucker creams out just above ~105K sql statements per second on peak and ~15K per second for 1.5 second to read an order. 1.5 second to read less than 4 fucking kilobytes!
Right at that moment I released that our software would grind to an fucking halt before even thinking about starting it. And that me & myself and I would be tasked to fix it.
4 months later and two weeks until functional beta, here I am. We created our own api with the SQL server 😀
And the outcome of all this...
Fixes bugs older than a year, Forces rewriting part of code base. Forces removal of dirty fixes. allows proper unit and integration testing and even database testing with snapshot feature.
The whole ERP system could be replaced with ~10 lines of code (provided same relational structure) on the application while adding it to our own API library.
Best part is probably the performance improvements 😀. Up to 4500 times faster and 60 times less memory usage also with only managed memory.3
I'm on that addition grind on github, trying to overtake everyone but it's so unfair that the lead-dev gets to commit all the libraries and has about +900000000000000000000 more additions than everyone else.....3
What really grind my gears?
People telling you to get ”a real job", because they can make a website with WordPress without needing any education or scam-diploma(read: proof of education)...
My collegue denies to provide breaking changes in our login API in a separate version to the other teams depending on it.
What is the reason for his stubborn rejection?
It's scrum. We haven't planned the effort for realising a versioning concept for our API.
Let's build it in the next sprint as a part of live deployment strategy.
The point he miss is that the ProductOwner wants his API change deployed during the next sprint.
Additionally, it is best practice, having a compatible, deployable product after each sprint, without any risks.
Furthermore, another best practice to provide your API is one URI without a version part holding the current development of the API. And URIs with a version part in it to keep a specific request/response structure and behavior.
What really grind my gears are sayings like 'if the other teams had well programmed their software, modifying our API won't have any effect on them'
C'mon dude. That's far from reality, as anybody knows.
I can't accept, we provide unprofessional API builds, as he is going to do.
So, i have to spend my time and energy to change his mind, together with other software-architects, planning the big thing API-Gateway *sigh*2
I don't know how many of you have faced this but fuck college student entrepreneurs!
Every one of these fuckers is all about the hustle and the grind which mainly involves them sitting on their ass and approaching me with ideas that they think will revolutionize the world
AND WHY'RE ALL YOUR IDEAS CENTERED AROUND SOCIAL NETWORKS? DO I LOOK LIKE FREAKIN ZUCKERBERG (I probably bombed the spelling but IDC)
I decided to work on a project (can't disclose any information cause the idiot had me sign a paper or some shit) and they gave me and 2 other devs a task of creating FUCKING ANGELLIST
look man, could be an easy task for your "business team" of 7 to give that task but do you really expect me to work with 2 loud mouthed freshmen who don't know shit and give you a finished product? I DONT THINK SO
It might seem simple but my coffee grinder is my favourite thing. each morning I grind up a fresh batch to brew. without this the days would be dark indeed.2
today is one of those days were work is just a grind
that moment you are interested in nothing, can't find a good tune either and just want to go home and sleep (although you fear even that might not work)3
Senile Web login services from 2009 grind my gears, and tertiary education administration snorts the powder.
Trying to apply online at a local university. They didn't have place for me 3 years ago so I went elsewhere but for my 4th year I have to go to them.
Because of my previous application I still have a student number. Online application says I have to log in to another portal and apply there. Then that portal now requests a Pin that I was never sent, and the "request new pin" function doesn't work because apparently my email is not in the database for my ID. My email was 100000% sure on my application, but some dingus never inserted it into the system.
Why not just start a "new" application you ask? Because the New Applications portal won't allow it for my ID number since it has a student number already. Now I either have to apply manually and pay the fee or wrangle Uni staff to reset my account.
Alright... so now my week of vacation and advanced but fun coding is over... tmr I will be returning to the grind...
Time to go back to ranting and thinking about how to get a better job... and preparing for those pesky technical interviews...
I feel like there's an over saturation of dev sites talking about "tutorial this" and "best practice that". Would be refreshing to have developers just talk about their grind and not so much their showing off of what they just learned from Stack.....oh wait a minute!! Must be how this devRant came to be! Hmmm....fuck me, epiphany. Who knew?
Not feeling well (plus cold office) but still extending time after work hours (OTY) because of a big task with a quick deadline (already have a short deadline set before the task was given to me)
Oh well. Grind, hustle and push!
Listening to this while working 👊 :
Sublime Text owners, what persuaded you to buy it? The nagware notice is really starting to grind on me but I might just switch back to Atom :P any benefits beyond no nagging to purchasing?
Might buy either ST or PhpStorm since I like them both7
Take a break for little while, watch some shows, play some video games, learn something new, before heading back to the grind.
During prototype every one loves it and there are no changed, a few development days later just before going live I get loads of changes requests because the designers where no so sure about some aspects and had time to think about it... ffs, back to the beginning it is... But then project gets delayed and gess who's fault it is!?
This is what really grind my gears:

I would purchase a udemy course and grind away. I still do this today. In my option one of the best resources to learn new programming languages.
You know that Monday morning feeling, that dread in your stomach when Sunday rolls around? That knot in your stomach knowing you've got to drag your ass out of bed in the morning back to the daily grind?
Yeah, I don't get that. Mondays are cool.
Being that I'm still a student I haven't really "worked" for that long, but, as studying is a type of work, the most accurate estimation of me being on the grind is around 10-ish hours + the occasional freelance gig just to get my blood flowing.
I'm so busy with school and work that I can't find time to work on projects 😩 Trying to grind my way into a career but being crushed under the tremendous weight of time restrictions and responsibility
