So after a long day of CSS’ng for building a new form layout, I walk out of work and see this 😨
I swear the universe is cruel at times.9 -
So HR invited us to a mandatory hour long talk on why rest and relaxation is important for work efficiency.
On a Saturday.
You can’t make this shit up.15 -
Manager: Why aren’t you working?
Dev: I am, I’m just not typing because I’m thinking an issue out.
Manager: Well what is taking so long? You haven’t written any code for like 15 minutes, you’ve just been doodling on your notepad.
Dev: I’m not “doodling”. I’m taking notes and trying to visualize the issue. It’s a complicated issue with application stat—
Manager: Well just simplify it then
Dev: ?
Manager: Instead of making it a complicated issue just simplify it and then it won’t take you so long. You’re likely overthinking it, I never spend more than 30 seconds thinking about any issue before coming up with a solution. That’s what makes me so effective at my job is my ability to be lean like that.
Dev: …this issue is a bit harder than deciding what to have for lunch26 -
Interviewer: So how long did you work at your last job?
Man: 30 years
Interviewer: and how old are you?
Man: 22 years
Interviewer: you're 22 and you have 30 years of experience that's not possible
Man: and you are looking for a junior dev with 5 years of experience4 -
I've always made this joke, but it happened for real.
There was a existing bug in our machine for a very long time. So long that the validation engineer now treats it as a feature and they raised a issue when the bug was fixed :/7 -
Life of a Developer...
Everyone else: HURRY UP!! WE NEED THIS YESTERDAY!! WHATS TAKONG SO F***ING LONG!!
Me: The documentation you have doesn't have all the information which I've repeatedly asked for
Everyone: silence ...5 -
That moment when you've been sat on the toilet reading devRant so long that your legs have gone dead so when you try to stand up you faceplant the opposite wall :-/
devRant is bad for my health !
EDIT: what's more embarrassing is I lay on the floor writing this rant.7 -
Got my new phone a few weeks ago, it rocks a 11000 mAh battery.
Was sceptical as for how long it'd last anyways so charged it last Sunday to see how long it will last with my usage (few hours of devRanting, loads of signalling and quite some firefoxing plus Spotify a lot):
At 40 percent now 😯35 -
My estimations before devRant:
PM: how long will it take to implement this?
Me: one day, tops.
My estimations after devRant:
PM: how long will it take to implement this?
Me: one week, tops.
Thanks @dfox for making me so productive.3 -
In my new neighborhood I found this WiFi network which has been protected for so long by just its name "Virus".
Am sure the owner never thought of geeks who instead of running away from" virus" just get closer.
Am ranting using "virus" network7 -
how i spend so long on this as a child i dont know, but i wouldn't change it for the world, damn this brings back memories.4

Fucking fuck, I have been coding for so long yet I still make this mistake:
I wrote:
if (stateRunning = 1)
instead of:
if (stateRunning == 1)21 -
That moment when a friend was talking to you about an artificial intelligence he is building that is supposed to be a voice assistence and "even better" than Cortana. After a long time I asked him for the code like I wanted to check out the revolutionary techniques of machine learning he was talking about. So here is a short part of the 600 lines long "voice logic".
I almost started crying 😂😂15 -
When your colleague, who wrote the API is on vacation, the documentation is non-existent and you are tired from reading all-day long his spaghetti code, so you are just waiting for him to show up.2

I quit my job today for a better one! It was my first job after graduation, been there for 2.5 years so it's a big step for me.
Wish me luck on my new job! :-)5 -
my co-web devs just introduced me to css grids.
I feel so stupid for not knowing this, how long has this been here? HOW COME I MISSED OUT ON CSS GRIDS12 -
Long ago I worked for a contractor company who took over an asp.net site from another contractor company. The client said that everything ran slow and he had already updated the hardware per the 1st contractor. We checked the db calls and things ran fine; so I said "search the solution for "sleep"", it came back with Thread.Sleep(1) in several places with comments saying it was to allow the AJAX Spinner to show on the pages.
Turns out the client asked for the spinner but the hardware was so fast the 1st contractors added sleep so the client would see the spinner.12 -

So, it finally arrived 🤓
Been waiting for so long to get my hands on one of these! Finally I can start messing around with it 😄23 -
Okay so this is going to be a rant.
My exams started last wednesday. I'm doing a study called Application Development and I'm in my 5th year now (out of 4, long story).
This is the stuff that's going wrong at the moment and it's getting FUCKING annoying.
- The windows computers were not installed that well so everyone had to downgrade from the last update which took way too long.
- We have to have at least 1-3 conversations with the 'client' and 'manager' for each document but the waiting lists are so long that we have to wait for about 2-4 hours in general (we had a total of 18 hours for the first task) so a lot of people couldn't even have a meeting about around half of the documentation. Having meetings about everything is a REQUIREMENT for a good grade.
- Some of the teachers are so slow that the meetings take way too long.
- Although documentation is important, we calculated that about 80% of the WHOLE FUCKING EXAMS will be documentation which is way too fucking much.
- Some of the grading points (like chapters you have to write in the documentation) ARE NOT EVEN IN THE TEMPLATES MY STUDY PROVIDES. Already had a moment where a teacher was like 'I'm missing this chapter?' me: 'It's not in the official templates?!?' teacher: 'stop right there. I have to grade you for this so is that your or my problem'? unbe-fucking-lievable.
- Some students get so many 'musts' that we are seriously doubting if we can get this to work within about 2 days (12 hours).
Sorry for this rant but I had to get this the FUCK out.8 -
Best experience: Downloading devRant
Worst experience: Being on devRant for so long it's making my productivity go down. 😑2 -
So today I bought the firsts lego boxes for my eldest son and gave him his first long-term addiction...
Feels SO FUCKING GREAT!!!!!!4 -
Me working on a bug for so long the brain actually stops working. Leave work > drives home > sits on the toilet: "Holy toilet, that's the problem" > drives back to work > problem solved!
Anyone else?8 -
So they are going to make me wait for how long my mobile number is!!
Okay, qualified for being my next rant! 😁7 -
"Why does the search take so long?" maybe because it searches through2 dbs with 20 tables with 5.000.000 objects on an 6 year old server with hdds and apparently there is no budget for a new server, but there is money for an 40.000€ art piece.2

Setting up my new second hand thinkpad with Linux Mint KDE.
I just chose for harddisk encryption.
My password is so freaking long and complicated and I didn't write it down so let's start learning this fucker out of my head 😅12 -
I Quit,
Finally I quit.
This feels good after the countless red flags I raised to management and wishful thinking that this time things will be different. For the past year!
This time I lost the optimistic approach and got myself a couple of interviews, thinking, I'm in this for the long haul, could be 6 months could be a year, evantually I will succeed. and what do you know? It works, I can still pass those.
Then I set down with myself and thought, should I come to managment before signing the contract? Giving another chance for a real change? The answer was a resounding Hell No!
So, yea, if you are in a tough position. Don't give up, think long term, and who knows that "long term" might just be a month.3 -
I was a long time just a silent reader but finally registered me.
So get ready for some hate, mothertruckers 🤙15 -
Just for reference in the post. I'm 24 years old.
Guy: How long have you been programming?
Me: I started when I was about 10, so about 14 years
Guy: are you one of the anonymous?
Me: ...15 -
I bought flowers for my date. Online.
When I registered, the website send me via email my 30 character long password.
😥
So I try "forgot password". The genius website sent me, guess what, my 30 character long password...
For fuck sakes!!!! You had one job.... Hash the fucking password!!!!
I'm afraid these people will probably get hacked soon (murphy law).
Sha256.. Guys please...12 -
so, yesterday I configured a server for a production,
today I rushed into the room only to find a server with KDE plasma installed, Pycharm editor and a browser open.
WTF, how long until all developers realize that a terminal is a UI.1 -

I'm so so happy to have joined devRant: it gave me lots of motivation to work on my personal projects. In the last two days I worked more on an old dream/project than I did in the last year. TWO. DAYS.
Don't know for how long this motivation will last, but - for now - thank you so much, people :')3 -
Quick question.
The domain name I wanted was taken, and the person who bought it refused my offer.
So, I'm going to change it up a bit. Which one should I go for?
michelle-midnight.com (the dash might be a bad a idea.)
authormichellemidnight.com (this is way too long.)54 -
I just read devRant while on the shitter for so long my legs went dead. Now I can't walk properly hahaha...4

They really need to improve the algorithm that is searching for things in Windows Explorer. Literally:
Windows: *Searching for files in Downloads*
Me: I just typed .mp4, what is taking so long!?
Windows: *No results.*4 -
Never hack a game and change the gold value to 1.0e307.... It takes so long for my CPU to update its value whenever it changes......
This game is over 😢😥
Also always remember to take a backup before making dumb hacks....1 -
Just a reminder.
If you've been coding/studying/working/dealing with shit/stressed out/mentally broken/dead from the inside/fighting for your goal and not working out and so on all year long.
Take.
A.

Have you ever just worked on a project for so long that you just can’t stay motivated in it? Like you enjoy the project itself but the process of not knowing when it’ll be finished kills the motivation? Is this a normal feeling?14
-
User: Hey, we got a big issue with one of your tools. One of your pages isn't loading.
Me: Ok, so when did this happen?
User: We don't know? Its been like that for a long time though, so we thought it was normal 😃
Me: ....ok. So do you know what data is supposed to appear?
User: Uhhh we're not sure as well. Since, you know, its been like that for a while.
Just great 😑4 -
When you're stuck on a bug for so long and you drown in the quicksand of depression and start to question the meaning of life and the universe..6

Duckduckgo is AWESOME :)
So happy I moved on from Chrome & Google (just searching for now, its a long process)6 -
Legit can't remember. I've been driven by anxiety of deadlines for so long (and also, had no real vacation) that I only can work if a deadline is approaching fast.

When you've had a long ass 14 hour day and you're getting nowhere with a problem so you finally accept its time to go to bed...
You lie there for 45 minutes doing nothing but thinking up awesome solutions to the problem you went to bed over....4 -
Woke up from my sleep last night because the solution for a long running bug hit me. In a hurry I ran to my work-desk not too far from the bed and flipped open my laptop so hard I broke the screen.
I’ve sent the laptop for repair but my night was so long I didn’t want to get off because previously I only had one problem but then it doubled.2 -

Omfg, after webdeving for so long, I recently started to learn python and image manipulation.
I'm in love.
What have I done lol2 -
"I couldn't fix the test so I commented it out."
"I removed build timeouts because our jobs started taking that long."
Next I'm waiting for "Compiling the code is good enough we don't need tests" before I lose it...1 -

To all my fellow developers, hackers and programmers. Can't we all come together to agree that... Finally pushing that big update you have been working and struggling on for so long... is one of the most satisfying feelings ever! <3 -
Once you've been writing code for so long, being excited writing code can go away. I still find that I get the rush when working with a new language or technology. It feels good to be a beginner again 🙂3
-
Started learning python couple of days back.
My feelings right now
How the fuck I miss this language for so long time?11 -
So I reach office early , bcz I like to have sun left when I go home.
Other devs arrive almost 3-4 hours after me. And when it's time to leave,
They : you leave so early
Me : yes you ahole. I come early too.
And then they get credits for staying long I'm like yeah if you come at 12-1 you have to stay back.
So fucking frustrating.7 -

Am I the only one that devRant almost completely replaced Reddit for the "I'm currently waiting on something so I'm browsing" spot?
Since I've been on devRant, my time on Reddit and even HN diminished quite a lot!
Long story short, this place is amazing :P4 -
When you're stuck on the same error for so long, you try so many different things and by the time you get it to work, it feels like you've made so much progress. But once you take a step back you realize you really haven't done much.4

Spec'ing out a data analysis tool for several billion transactions and I got this when sending the final spec to the client.
Client: "I don't see why it takes so long, I downloaded this template from theme forest and edited it in dreamweaver, it only took 3 hours"2 -
I have been using Linux based system from so long but last week I was building outlook add-on using Visual studio. It was a nightmare to work on visual studio(Or any IDE in Windows) after working for a long time on Linux/UNIX based systems. So much of mouse clicks, worst console experience, etc. Windows is definitely not for developers.11

Working with DigitalOcean boxes for so long has spoiled me.
I went to setup something on my home server today, and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong for like 30 minutes...
Until I realized that I never forwarded port 80.

I think I finally found a reason to have a phone with 8GB of RAM.
So that when TWRP craps out on data decryption and decides not even to ask for a password, at least I can push a whole fucking ROM into RAM to unfuck the phone. Because why not?! Why on Earth would software work properly when you can just throw more hardware at it?
Long live FBE, TWRP what craps out on it, and you remember those things.. SD cards for data storage? I could've used an unencrypted SD card so fucking badly right now, you know... Long live soldered in storage that's encrypted, "for security". Except for when the person who owns said data actually wants to use the bloody data.

I promised i'd be home at 18:00
We discovered a bug at 17:30
We need to have an output for tomorrow
The process takes so many hours so we need to fix this bug before leaving so it can run all night long.
It's 19:06
Wife is gonna get mad...3 -
Is it just me or do you guys sometimes go like "Ah fuck it, haven't had a good night's sleep in so long, I guess I should sleep early tonight" and then you look at your watch and its already late?
God what I would give to get up early for once.7 -
End user when criticizing a developer for 'taking long' to create something of value from scratch:
(4 hours later): "What's taking you so damn long? Are you retarded?"
Oh I don't know, maybe I have to make sure that tests in my code run well, maybe I have to evaluate everything to meet the custom satisfactions of the user for his ever-so-custom requirements and I also have to make sure I discard what they don't like? And maybe it takes time to deliver a quality product, and so on?
Or would you prefer I deliver an untested product that I didn't bother to think about and I haven't bothered to make sure it matches with their requirements?
What end users don't understand is the involvement in a quality product.2 -

I put programming on a long hold a few months ago, but after I browse the playstore and randomly get recommended this app and install it I re-discovered my love for programming. I've been so motivated like I was pretty much never. I learned C#. I've completed my projects that sat around for way to long.
I'd like to just THANK YOU guys. You are an amazing community. -

I just hate it when a co-worker says "AS LONG AS IT WORKS. It doesn't matter how you code it as long as it outputs what the client/user wants. They don't check how you code it anyway" *facepalm*
We effin' follow standards so that it will be convenient for everybody!
Bad code is still bad code if you don't follow standards even if it works.4 -
Are there more people here who use Makefiles as a façade for complicated commands? For example, 'make dev.up' executes a long docker-compose command and 'make dev.expose.secrets' activates ansible-vault with some variables. It makes doing stuff easier and makes it so that developers with less shell experience can quickly get going instead of having to use long boring commands.
Each time I try to look up what the actual purpose of a makefile is I get a long list of explanatioms talking about building C programs etc. But it never talks about using it to just put shell commands in one big file with subtargets 🤔
So, my question, any of you guys use a makefile to facilitate a facade too?3 -
I can't stand talking to clients on the phone!
One of my first freelancing clients used to talk to me for an hour at a time. I really wish I could have billed him by the hour, it took him twice as long to explain anything and then I'd have to get back in the mindset for what I was working on. The phone is just so disruptive.
I'm so much happier working for a company where the project manager deals with the client's and product managers.2 -
Boss: How long will it take to finish the project?
Me: (Gives date for finishing dev and deployment.)
Boss: great, sound reasonable.
Me: ...
Boss: wait. Aren't you on vacation the two weeks after that.
Me: jup.
Boss: yeah we are not doing that again. Client can wait another two weeks.
Before someone says no Boss/PM is like that, he was/is a developer too so discussing deadlines and efforts is usually pretty relaxed since he knows our codebase and how long it takes to do things.2 -
When i was younger, lesser experienced and more naive than now; i got away with a lot of things. By lot of things i mean security flaws in my applications and overall architecture. I realise now i could've so easily been pawned.
Not that i claim to be totally secure even now, or would ever. It is a process, slow and painful one - Learning.
What i wish to point out is the role of favorable probability (non believers would call it luck). Security is so much about it. You get away with so many things for so long. And bang one day the roll of dice is unfavorable. On such rare occasions, just look back and wonder - damn i should've been breached long ago.rant hindsight security fail looking back security luck vulnerabilities food for thought musings naive probability2 -
Lead: how long do you think it would take to fix the bug?
Programmer: 20 mins with a testing
**Lead an hour later**
Lead: I don't see PR for the fix
Programmer: the fix broke all the unit tests so I am fixing them now. -
So I was building a WPF standalone software for a subject in uni, and our lecturer (the PhD holder guy) told me to make the GUI responsive in my WPF application, and gave me a long lecture about how everyone uses mobile nowadays.1

Bashing our fellow developers for using <insert tech> is not cool. This especially became overboard with PHP. And yes I've been guilty of this, despite using PHP before for so long as well.

So I work for a VPN company as the Info Sec manager long story short I'm not usually the pleb who does customer support.
But today I ended up having to do this. I spent over 1 hour helping a client that a support agent escalated the request for to me. So I figure out that his network adapters are sharing incorrectly.
I fix problem.
He tries to connect.
Denied access so I check our servers for the request and he's blocked.
I think that's odd.....
I check active subscription and this person ISNT A CLIENT THATS ACTIVE....
WHY IS SUPPORT SO IGNORANT.
UGH.1 -
I could kill someone. My boss occupied the whole cluster for 24h yesterday, so that I had to wait until today to see that I had a small bug in my code. I wasted a whole day waiting around for something I could have fixed in 5 minutes yesterday if I only had 1 free node on the cluster 😠
Worst of all, if anybody else had occupied the whole cluster for so long without asking, he would have sent an angry e-mail to the whole institute 😠4 -
Does anyone use a particular reminder to remember to take breaks from their computer?
I'm noticing when I spend a lot of time looking at my computer screen, my eyes will get really tired and it'll be almost impossible to continue looking at a screen. However, when I am not looking at the computer screen all day long and the amount of time is spread throughout the day, my eyes are fine.
So I'm looking for something to remind me to keep taking breaks so that my eyes are rested all day long.
*I do have a blue light filter on 24/7*7 -
“Free? Must be trash.”
“Pay for it? Psss yeah right. I’m sure there’s a free version.”
“Wait... really really expensive and a really really long line and a chance I won’t even be allowed to buy it? I’m am so there.”
- everyone but me?8 -
I'd like to give a shoutout to the best tool I ever had when I worked in hardware and had to troubleshoot ethernet. The "RLFLTWKW". (The Really Long Fly Lead That We Know Works)
My friend that I worked with long ago just dug it out of a drawer and sent me a photo so we could remember the days when trying to figure out why Mavis couldn't get on the network anymore could be resolved by our faithful friend "TRLFLTWKW". I miss you buddy. You made life so much better.
I wish I had an equivalent to you for coding. -
It's not bad UX! It's just deprecating and replacing it with a hidden feature!
So before there was an Uninstall button on the long-press menus but they removed that in some update...
So now all icons only have a Edit, Remove, and App Info
I finally got annoyed enough after looking for a Setting to just email them...4 -
Had to fire two good developers and a decent QA engineer due to financial reasons in the company :(
That was the painful part, but moreover GUESS WHO'S GONNA GET MORE RESPONSABILITY FOR THE SAME WAGE?!
So long and thanks for all the fish. I'll see you in valhalla4 -

My battery died after a long day. So, I decided to use devRant web for the first time and to be honest with all due respect this website sucks. Most difficult thing about it is navigation.3

I think I've reached the point where I've been programming for so long that I have off by one errors doing normal math by hand. Nothing more humbling than getting beat out to a bunch of simple math problems to a grade schooler.

Today when registering myself for a website I was asked to validate my email address. Literally I was sent an email with only "Please verify your email" in the body. So I responded with "ok". Lets see how long it takes for them to realise their mistake.3

I have upvoted good questions, helpful comments and useful answers on SO for a long time now, although I don’t have enough reputation (15 needed to count upvotes).
Once I reach this 15 points get ready for a big rain of upvotes 😁2 -
These are probably stupid questions but I have to ask.
So does it usually take long for people to get back with you after you apply (if they were to be interested)
And are contracting positions worth looking into as well for someone trying to build professional experience?8 -
omfg. I hate this bullshit so much...
windows wont goddamn work after the anniversary update. it takes infinitely long to boot up , the searcj is not working , I am goddamn lagging for some fricking reason. what the hell Microsoft ?4 -
For years I felt like an imposter for not rooting my smartphones, and not owning any raspbis. - Now finally I got an pi 4 and installed my so long desired pi-hole.
Quite disturbing that at least 30-40% of my traffic is known ad shit. Such an infestation.7 -
I know this is sort of off topic but I think Psychology is pretty great sometimes and while it doesn't explain why we behave the way we do, it does a great job studying it, at least. So to explain why fake news is so rampant and why despite us being in the middle of the technology age, so many are still ignorant, they conducted a study on what makes a source credible. It's a very long and thorough study, so I will like it for you to read, but the gist of it is this: any long text which is too boring to read word for word is automatically taken for truth. Images add credibility. And simply adding a reference - even if it isn't a credible reference or if it's not related to the information at all - will make readers assume truth, and most won't even think to validate the links.
Here's the full story:

How long do you recommend 'sticking it out' in a new role? I moved 2,500km for a new job and so far I have been training on the worst development platform I have ever seen, produced diagrams, printed documents and taken meeting notes 😡. #IJustWantToProgram

my 4TB Seagate HDD is failing in a very strange way:
I noticed an issue where my PC would just outright hang for a minute or two occasionally when swapping to the 4TB HDD. When I look at logs, when it hangs, the 4TB HDD times out but then on a retry IMMEDIATELY reads whatever sector just fine. In fact, it reads fine constantly for a few days until the same sector has an issue. So, the timeout is a remap, then? No, as the spare sector and bad sector counts in the SMART info don't change. It doesn't even change how many read errors or anything it's had. Strange, but let's test it with Seatools to be sure.
Tests go as follows:
- Short: pass
- Short: pass
- Long: seatools immediately crashes. Reopening seatools, it pulled a serial of all zeroes... okay....?
- Long: seatools immediately crashes. Seatools gets the right serial on reopen.
- Long: pass
- Long: fail
- Long: pass
- Long: seatools immediately crashes. All zero serial again.
i have no idea what's happening14 -
any advice for a junior dev that can't get any fucking help from the senior devs? I can only in good-conscience try to solve a problem for so long before I know I'm seriously wasting my time
when I ask for help I often get "I'll get to your question in two or three days"
like damn I'm pretty stuck here guy10 -
So I was waiting on a mysqldump for over a halfhour wondering why it was taking way to fcking long.
But then I saw I typed mysql -u user -p database > dump.sql
Instead of using the mysqldump command xD at moments like this you realize how important sleep is xD -
The feel when you just finish coding for so long time.
So fcking great

I was copying data from a failing zfs drive with rsync and I noticed that it spent a long time on the file ~/.local/share/Baloo/index
du -h index showed a 500ish MB file which didn't seem large enough to take this long.
I recalled that du shows disk usage, not file size and since I was using zfs compression they could be quite different.
so I added -A for apparent size:
du -hA index and it comes back with 1.7E
The file was 1.7 exabytes...6 -
Hi everyone, I've a desktop and in my area power cut is quite frequent. Although we've backup power, but sometimes it takes ~15 mins to come back.
Is UPS only option for desktops? Laptops nowadays have so long battery power, why there is no good option for desktops. UPS usually stays for 5 mins. Could you please suggest something better, as I've seen lots of desktops in posts? Thanks.10 -
Erm not sure if this qualifies. Not so long ago I was tackled with having to read a device memory at a very high address in 32-bit linux process (kernel is 64). The 32-bit mmap is unfortunately limited to range of protected mode PAE so it just wouldnt reach that high. So! I wrote my own syscall in assembly that would switch to long mode first so I could use long registers and then I got my page and switched back :)
In retrospective not a big deal, but it made me really happy for the rest of the day when I saw that address in pmap :)1 -
I can't believe I've missed out on Firefox Focus for so long. I'm a Chromium guy, but Focus beats rounds on Chrome mobile in terms of speed and browsing experience.2

I don't know if this is really much of a rant
So I fixed a huge bug in a standalone tool I'm writing for my team. Took care of some personal stuff, i.e arranged a long weekend away, booked leave for that, arranged a dentist appointment, felt so productive. Ready to go home, looked at time, 10:00...
Fuuuuuuuuuuu- -
So worried people will fuck things up in work when I'm not there. It's causing such tiredness and such long days. 🙇I think it's caught up with with today. No holiday leave taken for 9 months and not a day off sick. 🏳1

So we have to go back to school for english not the engineering ?4 -
How would you feel if you can't solve your code? I'm almost a week stuck on a server problem. I applied for frontend dev position, it's okay for me to do this kind of stuff but the fact that I can't solve it for so long it makes me feel down :(5

Hey guys, i joined a new company a week ago. In the offer letter they mentioned the working hours from 9:30pm to 6:30pm but today an HR told me to be online till 7:30pm. I refused. Guys i really cant sit for so long in front of the computer. 9:30 to 6:30 is a good time, but i cant sit for more than that. Also after 6:30 i meet my friends everyday. I dont know what to say to them the next time they ask me to sit for so long. If they want employees to sit for so long then why dont they mention it on offer letter?8

In the mood of doing nothing because I have so much shit going on. Anyone knows that feeling?
Also so many (cool) projects I would like to do but no motivation to start anything... I have no real reason to... I’m just waiting for motivation to come back one day - but it has been a long time.. :(3 -

How do you come up with side projects? I'm currently looking for a side project that will be useful for me, an maybe for others in the long run.
Any suggestions? What do you think the market needs right now?
Keep in mind I'm currently a student so I don't have a lot of money to spend on investments.5 -
The perks of working for a .NET shop:
1. 130€ of credit to burn on Azure every month, so I can run some long builds there, to have VPN/proxies for free that are not easily blacklisted and whatever else I can think of. Today I set up a VM for my wife to RDP into, so she doesn't have to do her job search on her company laptop (which is the only computer she has right now). -
Boss: I'm not seeing the fix for the simple text change issue
Me: (who cares about little design details which said boss really likes about me) That simple text change is a long line of text and breaks on all screen sizes besides your big ass monitor, so I asked for a designers opinion, which I finally got today.
My bad for caring just a little bit... -
turned down software engineering job offers after college because I thought it be a good to take a temporary position as a controls engineer so I could pay off student loans faster.
realizing how big of mistake it was. working long hours on uninteresting tasks. I just want to code for a living. -

The longer I work in my department, the more I grow to appreciate clients that actually know what they are doing. Or clients who have been communicating with us for so long that the emails got a little less strict and formal.
Having a client write something like "I know this mail looks scary long, but trust me, its just a few domain edits, nothing horrible" (freely-translated from my native language) just kinda... Sets me at ease and makes me chuckle.1 -
Without a break this would probably be around 4 hours. After that I just loose all productivity. So there so is really no point in forcing it any further.
For working without sleep I have regular done stretches as long as 32 hours. With just breaks for food and a quick walk around. To keep my body awake.
Why you probably ask yourself, well this has several reasons. For me to get in the "zone" I have to be awake for at least 12 hours. I'm not sure why this is, but the combination of being too tired to get distracted and the increase in dopamine from sleep deprivation. Is I think what makes for this, or by now it might just be a placebo. But well it works for me.
So when a deadline gets near and I'm not going to be able to make it, which used to happen a lot because I used to have a lot of migraines. I would start working in the morning, trying to get things done but not being to able to. Then after a full workday would take a dinner break and get back in the office, at this point I get in the zone and time flies by as I work through the night. Next morning people are coming back in the office and I start another workday.
I try to plan this so I have a lot of meetings or other social work. I get really social and chatty after being awake for more then 24 hours. Because my problem solving skills have really declined after being awake for so long.
Now when I still used to drink, I would after this workday get some dinner and go out to a bar to have drinks with friends. To celebrate me having made my deadline and well I'm really social from being awake so long. And I stop overthinking everything.
Still looking for a way to get in the zone before being awake for so long, so any tips are welcome! -
Oh my god my iMac has been decompressing that bloody Xcode_8_beta.xip file for over 45 minutes, why the fuck it taking so long?2

Aaargh, GitHub pain:

Broke up with my girlfriend due to ongoing stress to commit to the relationship, to perform at my current job, graduating early next March, looking for a full time job/studying for interviews, and going to school.
We never really planned long term and we were just in the relationship to have fun, but man do breakups suck.
I want to be able to focus on myself so I can set myself up for greatness in the future. Unfortunately that means sacrifices have to be made so I don’t lose my mind. Oof4 -

So, while I was hunting for job...waiting for reply to the job I applied. (As now is CNY) , so my friends and I do a little bit of freelancing...
So this business owner wanted an Ewallet app in Kaios. It's possible but he keep complaining that why me and friends so slow and can't deliver in a day. WOW! He said he "Create" software before.
To burst my resentment, I asked him to show us what platform he use for creating application. He showed us "Wix.xom"
Long story short, we dropped the project. Find a new one. -
So.. I'm doing this 2 week long internship at a pretty big corporation that was looking for high school students for a security training program, and they're having us utilize Splunk (which I've heard about, but never used). Any opinions and/or tips on this tool? :)1

My team leader/manager tends to assume that when you call in sick, you'll be sipping soup, wrapped in a blankie, while working from home.
Ahhh... NO! When someone calls in sick, you assume the worst, phone the florist so long and prepare for standing next to a hospital bed!1 -
As part of my engineering apprenticeship, I was sent to work on a train depot. One day, a mentor of mine called me over and said "Kid - can you go and see Mr so & so and ask him for a long weight?"
I, without thinking about it - went all the way across the depot found the gent and asked him for a long weight. He looked at me, a little bemused - and asked me if I knew what the weight looked like. I said no. He continued to inquire about this weight - it went on for a few minutes until I realised my stupidity. There is no such thing as a long weight - only a long wait.
Needless to say my mentor had a huge laugh together with his mates at my foolishness.
Sometimes things really are quite simple. -
New to databases - How is it that Oracle has been around for so long, yet have terrible documentation? Their support forums consists of condescending developers who never actually answer the questions and the forums’ format is just so bad.10

For the first time in a very long time, I am out of a software engineering job. I have no idea why I am handling this so well. I literally have no idea if I will get another job or not but for this month, I am working on myself and learning more on FP which is really fun btw. Is this maturity?9

Often I'll be stuck on a problem for so long that I'm like "okay, this isn't gonna change no matter how much I try". So I go off and maybe design something, play videogames, or read. Then randomly I'll come up with a solution to the problem (only to find another 😂)

I'm sure that some of you play LoL, so this might be interesting for you:

Me and my family had gone to Paris and Switzerland for vacation. We took alotta photos, there's was about 10GB worth photos in our iPad. The iPad was not working properly, so I backed up the photos to my laptop and gave the iPad for formatting.
Unfortunately, one fine day, my laptop shut down and never switched on again (long story short). We gave it for fixing, but it's still not fixed.
And so we lost all our photos, now there's no proof that we went to to those places 😆5 -

Everyone always talks about imposter syndrome and I don’t understand it. I don’t think I’ve ever felt like an imposter when I code, or that I’m a dumbass and can’t code or something(Well, I have definitely felt like a dumbass when I code but that’s because I am sometimes)

I've been using Linux for so long I've become completely unimpressed by Windows. Yeah I use it for work but even that might not be for much longer if I can help it. Pop OS from System 76 supports Actjve Directory out the box now, so I'll see how that goes. I have this database systems professor who cannot for the life of her teach this class. She goes on random tangents about anything and everything. So lately I've been thinking about building a server and running at home. I'm hoping that in the long run it would end up being cheaper than having a bunch of VPSes. I know a lot of people know about this already, but I'll put it here anyways. So a long time ago I found this warm dev community that made jokes hoping to cover for themselves and on a certain day they started acting like assholes to encourage a content cutoff because they were up to no good evil things

After how long? Our support dept has been using, Engineering dept we're so surprised.2 -
Consistently evaluating myself. Assessing where and what I lack and writing goals to work on. Not being comfortable for so long. Doing interviews help in the skill assessment.

When you look at a piece of code for so long to find the error that the code starts to make no sense and you question your own sanity.1

Been wanting to move away from my current job to tech for a few years now, but I've been stuck in this so called tutorial hell for a long time, how would one advance from this?4

Got my stickers today, after so long.
Don't what to make a fuss of it, but it does really gives happiness when they arrive for the first time.
Thanks devRant :) -
I've been working super hard for the past while.
I'm unhappy with almost all my work but my coworkers seem happy so whatever.
I'm just constantly irritated with myself for taking so long or making mistakes or whatever.
Gotta give a presentation tomorrow, not feeling excited.
Everything sucks , god fuckinngfck fuck my life2 -
I can't even imagine how I used to browse the Internet without Vim keybindings. I have been using Vimium for Firefox since not so long ago (1-2 months) and it just feels smoother overall.4

Argh, so yesterday was a day of, so everyone in the office took today off, so they get a long weekend.
But here I am getting ready for a morning client meeting which starts in 10 minutes
Sippin on some carbon black battery, just shoved a sausage in my face. Can’t wait till meeting is over so the weekend can start -
16h a day. I was late for a birthday present so I worked on it for as long as I could. It took me 2 months and I was not done in time...
I had eyestrain of death and all this trouble only for a freaking birthday present.
But the present was good, although it was incomplete.2 -
I'm at my best when it is constantly raining outside. It's hasn't rained properly in 6 months or so here in Portugal :/
Productivity has been picking up last 2 months but it's still depressing for it to not rain for so long when it is the "saviour" of your work. Also my country is in a severe drought and the thought of no water doesn't help. -
Was dreaming about a repository for a good night's sleep, when I took a 4 hours long nap. All because of non existing sleep last night. - Might need to take a day of soon, it's just so darn hard.1

Finallyyyy...
Being stuck for so long doing courses.. I now have built something.
Can a brother get some feedback on his first project so I can see where I am at? (Job worthy)
Here's the link: https://www.pomotivity.com/

First day back at work, lunch time now. So far I've been to one meeting and done no work. I can't get on to the vpn. We get OTP for the vpn via sms. Sms is taking so long to come through that it always expired by the time I get it
The kicker? I work for a cellular provider1 -
Re: Momo the Monster challenges and the sickness and bullying of Internet culture towards vulnerable people in general: That’s enough Internet for the next 600 years. Cue asteroid.13

How have I not known about brace completion for vim this long?! I’m so happy yet feel so dumb #LifeOfaDeveloper

Unpopular opinion. IE6 stuck around for so long because it was the best browser in its time. It's horseshit today but only because that generation liked it so much they couldn't bring themselves to leave it.8

i have been watching some jetpack compose tutorials and trying to create projects with it. Its quite cool and looks very interesting. but wrti8 those modifiers seems like a great wastage of time :/
Also, i have an OCD of writing code in lesser number of lines , as much as possible . so i would rather prefer writing
val x = Modifier.function1().fun2().fun()
than
val x = Modifier
.function1()
.fun2()
.fun()
as long as my code line does not cross the 80 character limit guideline, and as long as it makes sense to not switch to a new line.
but IDE seems adamant on breaking those long modifier lines to weird indented codeblock, so its already getting very noring for me :/2 -
Pale pretty long haired Asian women will always be like cats to me. Pretty kitties I want to nuzzle and pet and cuddle because they are so cute 😁
Apparently I've never interacted with shrill bitchy nagging ones. Thank God for small miracles.8 -
Spent the best part of a day getting Google maps to offset the center of its bounds to account for divs displaying the marker info, which are floated on top - why does this shit take so long??

When you've been waiting for your domain name to transfer over to AWS for a couple days, and you're wondering why it's taking so long so you check on Route 53 and it says "We sent an email to me@you.com and we're waiting for you to approve the transfer."

FFS specification of this feature changed for fourth time in a matter of like two weeks. Flipping client, I bet he's gonna be asking again why is the project taking so long...
I am so glad I don't have to interact with him, I might say some unfortunate things to his face. -
Hey, I have a quick question for developers in Barcelona. For out study association, we're trying to organize a week long trip, in which we want to visit some companies. But we're having a bit of a hard time finding interesting companies, so if you are (or know) someone at a tech-company in Barcelona, I'd love to get in touch.1

So yesterday there was a discussion at my company about what would be more user friendly for deleting an item or items from a list. Long Press or swipe. We came to an agreement that depends on the UX and choice. What do you think?6
-
It's so easy to use for-each loops instead of if-else chains, yet when I write a system in for the first time, I always find myself doing the latter.
"It's placeholder code" saves me every time as long as I rewrite it later.6 -
When my code works without any hich I feel like I can conquer the world.. But when it doesn't work after trying for so long, I feel like What am I doing with my life.

Long time no rant.
Spent the last two days trying to figure out why a legacy app that I adopted (was a surprise considering I'm a database developer not c#).
Long story short horrendous view causing issues retrieving data in an app that is slow enough as it is.
I may have suggested starting a proper product roadmap and using sprint's etc for managing development of said app. And the boss agreed, currently the process is someone asks for a feature and we drop everything and develop it so things get forgotten/pushed to the back of the queue.
So to cut to the chase, can anyone suggest any places I can read up about managing this properly? -
So it's been a burden I carried for long.
With the way I set npm up, I unconsciously did the installing process with sudo, and thus can't use npm properly without a sudo.
Is there a rather not convoluted way to set it back up so I don't have to use sudo again for that?11 -

I've used JavaEE/jQuery/pure JS for so long, I'm crying out for some side projects using different frameworks/technologies.
What's good?5 -
Iam posting this coz I think and think and think and it's gone for so long.... And still got nothing funny to post here..... I just successfully wasted my time.. Congratulation to me!

Are programmers so
1. Busy to skip to get the time for shave, (long hair and beard),
2. Or lazy to skip.
3. Or don't find it as a need.
Sorry for poor English4 -
When you get work assigned to you. Are you asked for how long it will take you to complete the work or does your manager give you a deadline to complete the work? Note: Manager was a senior developer but now a manager so he states he knows how long it might take and sets deadlines.8

Looking at the dev world this month like.. gitlab is down.. s3 is down.. isitdown down.. looks like devrant is using s3 as well, so no meme on this rant :/
And for the first time in a long time it's not my problem..
No job, no bugs 😖😭 -
So for a question on Codeforces, I got the basic logic right, but for one particular test case, the input is a huge number of 250 digits. But the most unsigned long long int can handle is 19 digits. So I used double instead of int, but that makes me lose precision. And I also cannot use the % operator (modulo) which is int only. How do I get around this ?2

So a new project was assigned to me with Laravel. I don't know abcd of this But have to do within strict deadlines :(

Any advicess from those are in long run being dev2 -
After using Linux on my laptop for so long getting on my Win10 home setup is like nails on chalkboard

So I was thinking of using Hexatrigesimal strings (base 36 numbers) for indexing like in a database. It could be very short indexes for long numbers, and still be completely ordered. However it doesn't seem to be supported a lot in programming languages. Does anyone know why it could be a bad idea?10

Is it only I that hate these crappy .gTLD's that ICANN opened up for.... .date .club .store .xyz .pro .download , already lost count on how many of these TLDs I have banned in my exim4 due to a 100% spam rate...
like a long banlist of *.date, *.xyz, *.store and so on...10 -
I confess, I did a trolling today.
Kinda deployed staging in production today. Nothing happened, but the fact that it stayed there for an hour.
Why so long? Because gitlab would ratelimit the CI would and prevent it from executing for an hour straight and AWS was also a jockster by capping the download of the image to <1MB, so we couldn't even retag it -
So if only one query on a firestore collection returns 1000 documents, this is considred as 1000 read ?
Or only one ?
Docs say 1000 !
And since the cache os 30min long, if the user came to the same and open it 30sec later, ill be charged for 1000 reads ?
Well well well !2 -
HELP: yesterday I discovered why my Gradle build takes so fucking long every time, but I still don't know how to fix it. for some reason, it sees the node_modules folder as NEVER "up-to-date", and so every single time I run 'gradle war_exploded' it copies the entire node_modules folder into the war, even of nothing has changed. any ideas?2

I just realized I can right click on a wcf service/client web.config and edit the bindings etc. in a gui. This would have made my life so much easier for (*choosing not to share for how long as it is embarrasing*). -
Well sending emails to get sponsors and project for my 2 month long open-source hackathon is tiring and often end up with no reply :(
If anyone has a cool Opensource project we would love to have it here for students to learn opensource https://devscript.tech/woc/
It's a student-led hackathon without funds so would love some sponsors too.4 -
When a function has parameters for "limit" and "skip", make sure to double check those first when something seems broken. I switched them around so limit was 0, and I kept wondering why it returned 0 objects. It took me way too long before I figured that one out...

I am doing some late night developing because I feel excited about my own project after a long slog of refactoring and ground work... and my IDE is getting weird leading to long compilation times :(
Dear World. I am doing my life-chores so please let me get my shit done for once!
I was this close to fall asleep content tonight...
