Client: "Hi, there's a problem with this link"
Me: "How odd, I'll take a look right away"
-- 19 minutes later --
Client: "Has this been fixed?"
Me: "I'm working on it currently"
Client: "OK please let us know when it's done"
Me: "I will do"
-- 2 minutes later --
Client: "Hi, is this done?"
Me: "I've just told you I will let you know as soon as it's done"
-- 5 minutes later --
Client: "Hi, sorry to hassle, but is this done yet?"
Me: *starts twitching*
Me: "I am working on it and I will let you know when it's done"
Client: "OK, well don't worry about it, it doesn't really matter"
Me: *explodes*12 -

Network team: You have to create a user incident
My browser: 403
Network team: Yeah you need to be on the VPN to access the incident system

My train is running Debian...
Normally it just shows the PXE boot screen when it's not working.
Seems like they've improved 😂7 -
Im at the hospital cafe (Long story, visiting a relative) and i had to do a quick fix on our project and i cant use my laptop atm to do it so this is my current setup
At least managed to do the fix34 -
00:00: Yeah I'll change that now, it'll only take 5 minutes.
00:05: well that's done, better do this too though before I forget.
02:20: well that escalated quickly.. Better grab 3 hours sleep while I can.
04:00: Fuck.4 -
Dev : Every user in your organisation requires their own username and password...
User: Why?
Dev: Because if everyone uses one account, every note, product, message etc made by all the user's will be saved to that one account and confuse the he'll out of everyone using it when they can't find their 'own' information they made/captured/downloaded.
We just need the user emails.
User:We can't give you all the user emails just use one account ....
(The reason for not providing us the emails is purely cause it would require user to do work and that's out of the question)
Dev: Uhm ok, but this is not what you want, and *interrupts*
User: It is what we want, do it like that everyone will understand and it will make the system easier.
*Two weeks later*
User: Why is there only one account? Why doesn't everybody have their own account? This is not what we wanted.
... The shit you have to deal with when you are on holiday ...undefined where to hide bodies you still thing it's our fault working even when i'm not working i was right and you were wrong stil my fucking problem6 -
Every company should give a day off to employees for their birthdays.. Is it to much I'm asking for???
Well, happy birthday to me 🎉🎉13 -
So many interruptions!
So many distractions!
I just want to fucking finish this refactor. I dont' care about meetings, texts, bloody office game tournaments, lunchtime, gossip, or people trying to be friendly. Just let me fucking work!
If you see me rocking out with my headphones on and working furiously, seriously, just don't fucking interrupt. I'll bite.17 -
Product replying to Jira ticket: We think this issue has been resolved. Can you please reach out to the user and confirm?
Customer care: User xxx has responded to say she "has given up in frustration, and the app simply doesn't work". She has requested to have her account deactivated. This user has requested to not be contacted any further by the program.
Hows your day going devrant? mines going VERY well5 -
"JavaScript was built in a weekend"
Yeah it was ... But not the version we have today ... Twats saying well I'm sure you can build this app in a few hours 🙄4 -
Trying to explain to a coworker that the AJAX call he would like to do will not work due to same-origin policy restriction.
Coworker: «But for me it is working.»
Me: «What browser are you using?»
Coworker: «Internet Explorer»
LMAO2 -
So... m starting my internship tomorrow. 4 months, 6-8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
M VERY anxious and quite frightened to b honest.
Wish me luck guys 😨😨😅😅
It is kinda what I wanted though... contains web parts but also C++ 😍
Tech stack: c++, JS, Python 😅26 -
My biggest personal challenges as a dev are these two:
1. I tend to work too much (by choice), which impacts my personal spare time heavily.
2. I tend to not let loose of a problem until it is solved. This often results in longer work hours or me not taking brakes...4 -
For fucks sake, corporate IT has locked a database application for new entries because it will be phased out by the end of the year. However, the new application is not yet working.
The interim solution? An excel sheet on a shared network drive. In fucking 2020! Unbe-fucking-lievable!13 -
Oh Boy!! Just thought this is an app for tutorials and how too stuff.. now noticed it's better than reddit... Catched my self spending hours here and not doing my work xD13
-
A client sent me a message this morning asking for a change to the software I'm developing.
It's Sunday, right?6 -
Sunday morning... Guess what? I'm at the FUCKING airport why you ask? Because I need to fly somewhere to school the stupid customer how to use our fucking app.
Instead I could sleep in my warm bed. Or write some code also in my warm bed. WHYYYYYYYY??!?!9 -
fuuuck, I overslept today, and I have to introduce a new team nember today and I will be too late in office because of that.
OK so i take a shower, and brush my teeth and get my clothes on in under 5 minutes (which is actually very fast for me), run for my train, just made it into it, get to the next station where I have to switch trains, and then it hits me again: 8 minutes delay, OK that made it even more bad than it was vefore, because I will miss my train on the next station where I again have to switch.
I will now end up 45 minutes too late in the office, only because I overslept. I hate me5 -
So this just happened... not to me, but at my friend's company.
The devs are being congratulated and spurred on for working late! I don't know about you, but this is not the kind of culture that should be encouraged.15 -
On the first day of Christmas, the bossman gave to me: The fact that my new computer purchase order needs to be OKed by the CEO and I need to continue working on a 2014 Mac Mini (i5-4260U, 8 Gig RAM, GPU shot by an ESD on the case long ago) for the next year.
On the second day of Christmas, my family gave to me... a good reason to get shitfaced
On the third day of Christmas, getting shitfaced gave to me: A hangover and some urgent plastic welding job that had to be done with a soldering iron. FML, I've had a headache before breathing in pure hydro-cyano-whatthefuckyougetwhenyoumeltplastics
On the fourth day of Christmas, my team gave to me: A legacy, age-old Rails 2 project that was written by an intern and never reviewed, went to prod in 2014 and can't be changed anymore, but needs to be changed after the fact that it has zero test coverage and needs 100 % now to prevent issues and costly manual testing.
On the fifth day of Christmas, devrant gave to me: The Idea that making fun of Christmas songs to get over the sheer amount of dicks that working over the twelve days of Christmas sucks.
To be continued...2 -
So I booted up this "very exciting, bleeding edge project" that my boss so delicately forced me to volunteer for. This is what I see:
FATAL ERROR
The internal calendar ended on Dec. 21, 2012.
... The Mayans. The Mayans built the system.1 -
So Friday afternoon is always deployment time at my company. No sure why, but it always fucks us.
Anyways, last Friday, we had this lovely deployment that was missing a key piece. On Wednesday I had tested it, sent out an email(with screenshots) saying "yo, whoever wrote this, this feature is all fucked up." Management said they would handle it.
The response email. 1(out of 20) defects I sent in were not a defect but my error. No further response, so I assume the rest were being looked into.
In a call with bossman, my manager states that the feature is fixed, so I go to check it quickly before the deployment(on Friday).
THERE IS NO FUCKING CODE CHECK-IN. THE DEV BASTARD JUST SAID THAT MY USECASE WAS WRONG, SO MY ENTIRE EMAIL WAS INVALID.
I am currently working on Saturday, as the other guy refuses to see the problem! It is blatant, and I got 3 other people to reproduce to prove I am not crazy!
On top of that, the code makes me want to vomit! I write bad code. This is like a 3rd grader who doesn't know code copy-pasted from stack overflow! There is literally if(A) then B else if(!A) then B! And a for loop which does some shit, and the line after it closes has a second for loop that iterates over the same unaltered set! Why?! On top of that, the second for loop loops until "i" is equal to length-1, then does something! Why loop???
The smartest part of him ran down his Mama's leg when it saw the DNA dad was contributing!
Don't know who is the culprit, and if you happen to see this, I am pissed. I am working on Saturday because you can't check your code or you lied on your resume to get this job, as you are not qualified! Fuck you!15 -
Man, most memorable has to be the lead devops engineer from the first startup I worked at. My immediate team/friends called him Mr. DW - DW being short for Done and Working.
You see, Mr. DW was a brilliant devops engineer. He came up with excellent solutions to a lot of release, deployment, and data storage problems faced at the company (small genetics firm that ships servers with our analysis software on them). I am still very impressed by some of the solutions he came up with, and wish I had more time to study and learn about them before I left that company.
BUT - despite his brilliance, Mr. DW ALWAYS shipped broken stuff. For some reason this guy thinks that only testing a single happiest of happy path scenarios for whatever he is developing constitutes "everything will work as expected!" As soon as he said it was "done", but golly for him was it "done". By fucking God was that never the truth.
So, let me provide a basic example of how things would go:
my team: "Hey DW, we have a problem with X, can you fix this?"
DW: "Oh, sure. I bet it's a problem with <insert long explanations we don't care about we just want it fixed>"
my team: "....uhh, cool! Looking forward to the fix!"
... however long later...
DW: "OK, it's done. Here you go!"
my team: "Thanks! We'll get the fix into the processing pipelines"
... another short time later...
my team: "DW, this thing is broken. Look at all these failures"
DW: "How can that be? It was done! I tested it and it worked!"
my team: "Well, the failures say otherwise. How did you test?"
DW: "I just did <insert super basic thing>"
my team: "...... you know that's, like, not how things actually work for this part of the pipeline. right?"
DW: "..... But I thought it was XYZ?"
my team: "uhhhh, no, not even close. Can you please fix and let us know when it's done and working?"
DW: "... I'll fix it..."
And rinse and repeat the "it's done.. oh wait, it's broken" a good half dozen times on average. But, anyways, the birth of Mr. Done and Working - very often stuff was done, but rarely did it ever work!
I'm still friends with my team mates, and whenever we're talking and someone says something is done, we just have to ask if it's done AND working. We always get a laugh, sadly at the excuse of Mr. DW, but he dug his own hole in this regard.
Little cherry on top: So, the above happened with one of my friends. Mr. DW created installation media for one of our servers that was deployed in China. He tested it and "it was done!" Well, my friend flies out to China for on-site installation. He plugs the install medium in and goes for the install and it crashes and burns in a fire. Thankfully my friend knew the system well enough to be able to get everything installed and configured correctly minus the broken install media, but definitely the most insane example of "it's done!" but sure as he'll "it doesn't work!" we had from Mr. DW.2 -
When you forgot to escape characters in regex and wonder why the fuck it’s not working for 2 hours. 😖
Why regex must you be a living hell!3 -
Oh boy my boss wants to talk about my "working times" since I enjoy starting work at 5am. Am I this weird to like working early in the morning?13
-
Omg so I've been stuck on this function I'm writing that checks if a certain array value is so many characters long and well, it just wasnt returning false when outside the conditions..
I tried taking it step by step, echoing out every line and it all made sense to me and there were no syntax errors.
Time goes by and inside the configuration file I was testing.. I was changing the value of a DIFFERENT array property than what I was using in my condition. They looked really similar.. fml xD2 -
Manager: Hey, what you working on?
Me: cough-finding another team-cough.
Manager: I didn't catch that.
Me: Sorry my throat is acting up today, i've been bug fixing all day.
Manager: Ah great, thanks.1 -
So, I'm a CS student in a third world country. I love coding and I think i'm pretty good at it.
As I'm kind of poor, I'm pretty much constantly looking for any job I can take, and I've already done a dev gig at a software sweatshop here doing mostly PHP, JS and Android/Java... the dev experience was cool, but money was absolute crap ($1.5USD/hour at the current rate, working 9h/day Mon-Sat, did it while in vacation). Better than min wage in my country but still, looking at the numbers I see from programmers all over the world... it was practically working for free. The real problem is almost every dev job here is similar, so I was looking into going remote but every opportunity I see is for seniors/people with 2-3 years experience or more.
Can you give me some tips on getting a remote job as a student/recent grad with little experience? What would you do in my position? Any input is greatly appreciated!17 -
If only I had enough freelance work to quit my job and dictate my own hours. working hours would be 18:00 to 5:00.1
-
Don't you just hate when your boss goes like:
"Why isn't this feature working?"
SHIT FUCK, IF I KNEW THE REASON, MAYBE I WOULD HAVE FIXED THAT SHIT, INNIT?
WHAT KIND OF FUCKING QUESTION IS THAT?
"Well you should have tested better"
IT TOOK A MONTH FOR 1 USER TO SEE THAT BUG, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? YOU EXPECT ME TO SEE THAT BUG IN THE FEW HOURS OF TESTING I CAN ACTUALLY DO FOR THIS PROJECT?
"There also are other 15 project to get done"
FUCK THIS SHIT -
Isn't it just nice to throw away hours of work because you were given wrong requirements?
I worked late last night to finish a project with an incoming deadline, and for what? That's right, for fucking nothing. Hours wasted. Just because I was told the form was to be submitted to an endpoint that I would receive later on.
Turns out that what I actually need to do is embed some form from a third-party service. So the form that I already implemented (with styles and logic) isn't needed. What's worst, I have to redo all the styles to match this embed form.
Thank you so much for that. 🖕Never again will I work late. I should have known better by now... -
Hello, world!
Soo.. I am half way done with Pre-Release 10!
Woohoo!
However.. The update log is already as long as the full update log for the last update.. Which was twice as long as the log for the update before..
I'm Starting to notice a pattern.. XD
This is all good and well, but I feel as if I'm overworking myself. I'm getting stressed out, and I'm not spending near as much time with my girlfriend. 3: But, I'm having fun. I'm genuinely enjoying myself, and I'm making a ton of progress in such a short amount of time. I also have a new team member!
Idk.. I haven't done anything the past two days really. Work nor spending time with my girlfriend. I'm stressed, and I'm not sure what I should do. I'm sooper modivated to keep working, but I feel that my situation will only get worse.
---
Because I'm sure some of you will be interested ('cause my game is very popular in this community <3), here is the update list so-far. Do note that this is not the final list, and things will be added, and may be removed.
As you can see below, this update is mostly focussed around API's. Specifically Modding, and the new FileSystem. On top of this, I will *try* and tinker with the official Patreon API for Java and see if I can't intergrate that into my game. I'll also work on a ModManager, but I'm not sure if either of these will make it into this release. I also have plans for new Apps and Commands for this release, as well as working and polishing up existing Apps and Commands.
---
* Closing the game with X button (and other ways) now also calls preExitTasks()
+ Added AddonLoader. It's literally a Mod-Loader. (Your welcome :3) A tutorial coming soon, but just know that it's standard Java codeing and you simply need to drop the mod.jar into the game's addons/ directory.
++ Added "API" - This is a bunch of methods that are added for the Mods to use. These Methods likely wouldn't of been added othewise.
+ Added in-game FileSystems (Folder, files..)
++ Added FileNavigator API for traversing the in-game FileSystems
* Fixed a major bug with the "debug" command where you could no longer run any commands after enabling debug mode.
+ Added GameSave creation
+ Added System creation
+ New Save + localsystem are generated on startup
++ Added WindowBuilder API for creating Apps. This makes creating Apps much, much simpler, and is intended for not only us, but use in Mods.
* We re-wrote the Console Class from scratch, and turned it into an API for creating custom Terminal Apps. (Commands are now created using the Command Class and are then passed to Console and registered as either a Local or Global command)
++ Added Command API for creating commands. These commands execute Java code, much like a JavaFX Button would, on each call. You also get everything after the first [space] of the command that was passed, as a String.
* Re-wrote ALL previously implimented Apps.
* Re-wrote ALL previously implimented Commands.
+ Added "debugtest" command to test debug mode. (This just prints a totally boring random message, and you shouldn't try it.) [Note: This "command will not exist" when debug mode is false.]
+ Added "cd" command. ("cd ~" "cd .." "cd /home/folder" "cd etc" "cd /")
+ Added "cat" command. ("cat file" "cat /folder/file")
+ Added "mkdir" command.
+ Added "rm" command.
+ Added "dir" command.
If you're new and you have no clue what I'm talking about, here's the info page: https://trello.com/b/0bH2SjQf2 -
This is a rant about having nothing to rant about because I'm so busy working on projects. The grind is just... grind-y.3

So couple of days ago I've told you that I've made an Duck Hunt Easter Egg in one of my utilities. And @jiraTicket asked me:
"How on earth do you get a decent gameplay out of Duck Hunt without a Nintendo lightning gun?"
Well the answer is..:
Connecting Leap Motion and making them suffer..
P.s. It took me a loooong time to hit that duck with this controller=)))) -
On negotiation and signing contract

life as devs in tough companies, high expectation and shit.2 -
This is what u get when u trust your teammates on a group project.
Not my fav function, but I was rofl when I saw it 😂
That is, until the frustration of working in a group kicked in10 -
Giant, month-and-a-half-long-ticket.
After learning six or so complicated areas of the system and updating them all to work with the new changes, make them all play nicely, etc. I finally got everything working. 95% spec coverage, though no ui tests because I haven't gotten selenium working. whatever, everything's done and works.
Second dev bases her ticket off of mine and continues working. Work elsewhere continues and there's an official release, so we both merge in master. I run tests, everything passes, and go back to working on other tickets.
She finishes her ticket.
We do end-to-end testing, and everything works perfectly. Time for a demo!
She merges in master again, and pushes her branch to two staging servers. (idk why two.)
Demo starts.
We connect to the staging servers, and... none of the UI changes exist; they aren't running the correct code!
So she runs it locally for a demo instead. Two features in my ticket no longer work. She throws me under the bus. She throws me under the bus again by criticising a rake task I scrapped because she wanted to do it. Then again because I didn't update my branch to master and push it before the demo, despite having no reason to. and despite the demo being of her branch.
Then she continues to show off and brag about how she's like the "legend" (senior dev) she envies. QAbuys it.
I'm having an emotion, and it's called anger.rant unfounded superiority complex people suck anger what the hell did you do to my project? i miss working alone9 -

You know when they love you at work when the first they do after you park your car is bombard you with NERF bullets1 -
Time to time I do some Hard- and Software repairs for neighbors and get some little money for it.
My neighbor let's call this one "Bob".
Bob has a new printer and a old one which is over 15 years old.
First: Holy shit 15 years old printer works still. WTF? Is this thing Hulk or what?
He ask me why he can't print a 128 site Doc with pictures in it from the old printer. It always stop at around 50 pages.
I tell him that it has only 32 MB Ram/Flash and can't print more. Before the Doc's were much smaller and could print that, but today you got files with more than 10 MB and on a printer it need's atleast 128 MB Ram to process and print it.
Guess what? One week later he asks me the same questions.
Why don't you print it on your new shiny expensive printer and why do you need still that OFFICE WAR VETERAN OF PRINTER to print it???
Seriously just use the new and better one!! Bob please give that old one a burial. He deservs it!6 -
Friend: Oh god! Are you sure you wanna eat that bunch of garlic?!
Me: Sure. I'm working backend.
Friend: Never mind.5 -
Sorry fellow dev from another company, we really appreciated your help even though it was your free day. There is little chance you are also on devRant, but if you are we cant thank you enough debugging the dll provided by you and even supplying us with a dev version in which you made some changes for us to perform some extra tests. The changes looks promising as far as we have seen for now.
This might save our asses. -
The feeling when everything works so smooth, but one little bug appears and you're like:
*covers the error log*
I don't see you, you little misery of mine... ^^ -
Damn stupid me...
One of our customers told us, mails are not working with SMTP. They send us a working code example, which looked very similar to our implementation... I was not able to find out what was wrong for hours.
A colleague checked the code later. After 5 minutes: you forgot a ! before checkin the string if it is null or empty...
Shame on me ..3 -
You know that feeling when something works perfectly after hours of tries, and then when you change something completely not related it magically stops?3

Wake Up. Cook. Eat. Work. Clean. Meetings. Work. Eat. Work. Netflix & Chill. Sleep. Repeat. 😎😝
How does your Work from Home look like?🧐9 -
Fucking first rant here:
So we tried to teach Two new colleagues to typescript and git and testing and stuff and we have a SPOC “which claimed to be very technical”. The SPOC’s task is to keep an eye on the work, and today we have had a review...
After two weeks, the created multiple branches into our git, all with one commit of 400 LOC changed, no merge requestet, issue in Redmine set to “closed”.
Well, by the way they were supposed to write Unit tests for our app.
But I thought, ok, we’ll check their branches.
Their tests all passed (cz) but man, the app didn’t and on compilation there were errors, the app is broken. Damn.
Is it really so far off, that even of They wrote tests, that the app should still work?
AND I THOUGHT IT IS COMMON SENSE. Damn!
Guess how needs to fix it6 -
We have 'informatica' (translates to 'computer science') on school. Tuesday we received an assignment to create a 'web-app' with JQuery mobile to show all of the US presidents.
Nearly nobody in my class has experience with PHP, so this is gonna be fun for them. All they have to learn from is a website from 2013, they are tought to just throw variables inside the query's.. Yay for SQL injection! 🎉
It actually contains a lot of out of date information, for example it says that jsp is competition for PHP, and that 'most sites with PHP have a PHP Powered logo'2 -
Inflexible working times.
I mean why the fuck is it ok to be at the office from 5am to 1:30pm but not from 10am to 6:30pm or what I would like most in weeks like the current one: 11 / 12pm to 7:30 / 8:30pm?6 -
Last week my university decided to give away old hardware to students (CPUs, displays, keyboard, mouse, speakers, printers etc.). My roommate got me this beast. I was so excited and decided to boot it up only see to GRUB error 22 :( I think the hard drives were wiped before handing it out.
I've never set up a server before and I've been trying to boot up an Ubuntu server via USB drive but it's not detecting the OS installation files. I've been searching all around to make this work but it's not fucking working. I don't have any other cables or CD drive to try something else. I want to make this work. I have exams next week and I can't stop thinking about this. Godammit8 -
Fffffff uuuuu regex!!!! :@........
*then I finally get it working*
......I am king! And can now do anything!!!! :-D2 -
Had to fix a bug in flask App built by 3 ppl !
So I some how roughly figured out the code and was trying to fix.
The bug was
I click on submit, two times the record was entered into database.
(Second time, duplicate error).
So to figure out ,I just commented the code which inserts to DB!
Whola!
Now only one record is inserted!
I still don't know where it's actually inserting !, And IDC , problem fixed
Shall I boast about my skills!?😂3 -
That feeling of absolute joy, when something you've been working on for a loooong time, finally just works... THAT is the reason why I love what I'm doing
-
Random story, I was working on a project a few years ago that had a very tight deadline and a lot of code to write. I had been working late in the office most evenings but one night myself and a colleague had stayed later than usual as we got carried away with supporting peripherals in the epos.
The cleaner came in on evenings and we had seen her that night, but had not heard anything for a while so when it came time to leave we figured we best lockup the 2 offices.
After making a quick pass through the building we couldn't see her so proceeded to lock up. Fortunately before setting the alarm we spotted her motorbike in the adjacent car park and decided to have another look.
I'm not quite sure why I decided to look in the tiny supply room/closet but fortunately I did as I found the cleaner standing in this tiny roomplaying games on her phone 😂2 -
Today, I was so certain that all the functionalities were implemented to handle some webhook calls from a third-party service. It's a script I wrote that has been running for 2+ years uninterrupted or without any issues.
We got some "complaints/notices" today that some "special" actions weren't registered, so I thought that the third-party service just didn't send those actions via their webhook. After some research I found a part where they explained that those actions trigger the webhook like any other action etc. So..
First thought: "okay, maybe they implemented that at a later stage" (was not the case)
Second thought: "maybe this is not what the client meant" (it was)
Third thought: "Then it should have been implemented" (it wasn't)
Okay, time to look at the code to see where this could get handled but apparently isn't. All the actions look good, nice, clean handeling etc, nicely documented code (gave the 'past-me' mentally a high-five)..
I scroll further down to that specific action and it was quiet obvious why it didn't work.. I just see an empty function with the comment:
"//TODO: maybe handle this action one day. don't know what this does atm, probably unused.. Will take a look at it next week.."
.. :D
I took my 'high-five' back..I just needed to copy-paste some other code and change 1-2 parameters..1 -
If nothing new is posted here I go to Facebook. If I exhaust the feed there I come here. Such has been my life for the past one hour 😶
-
I currently work with a guy that constantly blurts out, "It's awful quiet over there."
This is intended for me to reply to when I'm in the middle of troubleshooting some code. I put both headphones over my ears, crank up some metal, and continue being quiet. I don't reward stupid behavior with a response.7 -
Well what an adventure with this SSD...😑
my sis' laptop is from 2013-ish(?) and has/had a slow HDD in it. I wanted to speed it up, before her study, so I bought a new internal SSD (no new laptop wanted).
Created a bootable USB, exchanged the hard drives and install the OS on it. Seems easy enough...
The laptop restarts to finish its process ... laptop shuts down immediately, no warning whatsoever. 😳🤨
Start it up, loading screen, fan gets louder and louder ... instant shut down.😳🤨🤨.
Redo process, this time landing on blue-screen, error code critical process died? ... instant shut down again.🤔
Restart from old HDD, normal.😐
Retry with boot USB and reinstall SSD. Setup process copying files, meanwhile instant shut down.😳 Please don't tell me!😩 Since every part of the laptop was working, except the new inserted SSD, I thought "FUCK not a broken SSD!😣"
I had my own PC with internal SSD slot, so tried to find out, whether it would be broken...
All starting up fine??🤨🤨
Ok then? Finish the setup for the third time now ... everything up and running.😐🤷
Normal shut down, unplug, plug back onto laptop, it works. HOW?? WHY?? 😕
Why the fuck are you suddenly working? 😐🤷🤷🤷
That's some magic...5 -

How do you set a price for an hour of your time?
This week I made a project that took me 14 hours in a row to finish it and they paid me 25$.
Being honest I consider that project would have taken them at least 40-50 hours ?
How much money would you have asked them?10 -

Sometimes I wish I wasn't in IT.
All I've wanted to do for the last hour is work, but my vpn connection was unbearably slow. So as anyone in IT does, check the settings, try connecting a different way. None of that works.
So I decide to disconnect, wait a few seconds, then connect my usual way.
Well what do you know, I connect and get my usual VPN speed. I literally changed nothing.1 -
Since few days I’m sick. Literally, I look like shit and feel even worse. Some combo disease with fever, diarrhea and things like that. And despite that, I tried to work from home today. And surprisingly - I’ve made everything I planned to do: 100% PHP multi process server, which sends push messages via GCM and APN, emails and SMS (using different operators API and talking AT commands directly to modems). I’m a bit proud of myself. And now I feel like I’m dying, so it’s time to get some pills and take a looong nap ;)3

Friday: I just finished a project with someone and I went and told my boss that I'm done with this some other work can be allotted to me. He told me that I can start working on another project with another guy. This guy told me that we'll have to start working from tomorrow.
I was mentally taken aback because I thought Saturday's are holidays. And I had a feeling that maybe Saturdays are working but I wasn't just showing up(sidenote: I'm an unpaid intern here who started a month back). So I asked him one more time whether I should come tomorrow. He replied with a ya.
Saturday: I get ready take a cab to office only to realize that Saturday's are not working and what he understood from my 'tomorrow' was Monday.2 -
I had spent about 3 months working on a feature for a CAD software in a company where I was an intern.
The day it was ready I commited everything to the main branch and asked a senior dev to check it.
It didn't work… we spent 30 minutes, tried almost eveything, but the software kept crashing (even if "it worked on my machine").
At that point he said "ok, we won't include this feature, it's ok"... even if I worked really hard for months to make it work, I felt so bad.
A few hours later I found out that for all this time I was trying it in debug mode, and a few types of errors were ignored, something which of course wasn't happening in release mode. Worst day in that company.
P.S.
The reason I wasn't testing it on release mode was the fact the solution was so big it took about 45 minutes to compile it (using IncrediBuild, compiling it using more than 10 machines at the same time), so I always used the debug mode to compile every small change in less than 2 minutes.1 -

Hello World!
So i have a question for you... Do you have any experience with working in a foreign country?
If so, what were your expectations / experiences and where was that location?
I am super curious, since i am not really happy in the country i currently live in and want soon make an approach of going to the most tech-influenced countries in the world - Japan. (Will be still a while until i get there, but i want to gather as many informations about working abroad as possible)
I am of course open to any questions as well, since many people wonder, why tf japan?
FAQ therefore:
Q: Why Japan?
A: Japan has one of the most interesting cultures, as well as their technology became pretty popular and famous over the years, as well as i am an introvert and no one there would bother you with crap.
Q: You know about the working times, right?
A: Yes, completly! I love my job therefore i have (at least for now) no problems with working a good amount of hours / week.
Q: Are you a weeb?
A: No, i don't watch a lot of Anime, i do but just if i have nothing better to do and i find a show i really like.
Also: Please share your experiences, would help me a lot. If any question are left, don't hesitate ! :D11 -

"...it should be passed to the render function in the existing index action but thats written somewhere else, so if i could pass it there..."
"...i can write the action there and then i should pass the variable to the render function in the index action and goddamit, so thats how you do it, thanks mate!"

Tldr:
Can't fucking figure out why I'm the only one who can't solve a DP problem in code, when me and friends use the same idea and no one knows why only mine doesn't work...
We are given a task to solve a problem using DP. My friends write their code with the same idea as a solution. Copying the code is not allowed. I follow the same idea but my code won't work. Others look into it, in case they find errors. They can't find any.
The problem (for reference):
Given a fixed list of int's a = (a_1,a_2,...,a_n) and b = (b_1,b_2,...,b_n), a_i and b_i >= 0, a.length == b.length
We want to maximize the sum of a_i's chosen. Every a_i is connected with the b_i at the same index. b_i tells us how many indexes of a we have to skip if choosing the corresponding a_i, so list index of b_i + b_i's value + 1 would be the position of the next a_i available.
The idea:
Create a new list c with same length as a (or b).
Begin at the end of c and save a_n at the same position in c. Iterate backwards through c and at each position add the max value of all previously saved values of c (with regards to the b_i-restriction) with the current a_i, else a_i + 0 if the b_i-resctriction goes beyond the list.
Return the max value of c.
How does that not work for me but for the others?? Funny enough, a few given samples work with my code. I'm questioning my coding ability...7 -

I have workt until 01.00 in the morning on a private project and I have to say Im fairly surprised at the result. Rewriting scripts to make them more wider and powerful is kind of what I like to do (even if I never end up using them for anything but one thing, and its only to procrastinate) but its a hell of a job cause I havent learnt to follow a standard or remembering my already made up one. Im coding 2 correlating scripts for 3 hours without checking how they work cause Im bad getting them into a working state. After I thought I was done and got rid of minor syntex errors, my expetions were super low and I thought it would handikap a funktion. It wasnt even barely working, it was regularly old working. Im feeling cautiously smart. 😎

I think I am going to keep a desktop counter of every time the other team bitches about not having tool x or tool y rather than learning the tools we already have that are perfectly capable of serving the purpose they want. I get that devs should be allowed to have the tools they need to do the job, but at a certain point you're yelling at a cloud to start raining. Especially since we work in a restricted environment and IT's backlog is ridiculous.

Can there be a happy rant?
This is going to be a bit of a rambling semi coherent story here:
So this customer who just doesn't know what their data schema is or how they use it (they're a conglomeration of companies so maybe you get how that works out in a database). For every record there's like a ton of reference number type things mapped all over the DB to fit each companies needs needs.
To each company the data means something different, they use the data differently, and despite their claims otherwise, I think there are some logical conflicts in there regarding things like "This widget is owned by company A, division B, user C.". I'm also pretty sure different companies actually don't agree on who owns what... but when I show them they just sort of dance around what they've said in the past...
So I write a report (just an SQL query that outputs ... somewhere ... I mean what isn't that?) that tells them about all the things that happened given X, Y, Z.
Then every damn morning they'd get all up in arms about how some things are 'missing' but sometimes they don't know what or why because they've no clue what the underlying data actually is / their own people don't enter the data in a consistent way. (garbage in garbage out man...)
So I've struggled with this for a few weeks and been really frustrated. Every morning when I'm trying to do something else ... emails about how something isn't working / missing.
In the meantime I'm also frustrated by inquiries about "hey this is just a simple report right?" (to be clear folks asking that aren't being jerks, and they're not wrong ... it really should be simple)
Anyway my boss being the good guy he is offers to take it over, so I can do some things. Also sometimes it helps just to have someone else own something / not just look it over.
So a few days into this.... yup, emails coming in about things 'missing' or 'wrong' every day.
Like it sucks, but it's nice to see it suck for someone else too as validation. -
Something very interesting today
I worked on an API feature and it was approved and merge to the stable copy of the project. But then comes the demo.
Now we used Heroku(this devil)
The database uses sqlite. I can register an account on the web application. But the user table has only the admin account even though i have successfully managed to register.
I dont know what sorcery this was!
I simply went with the saying "it is working on my local machine"
Only to realise minutes to the demo the build pack was not done well at the beginning...
What is life... -

Have you all ever had an hypocondriac colleague? Like, the kind of colleague that will freak out everytime something minor isn't exactly as in his plans?
I have this colleague that DID freak out because, while making the integration of some website's footer, I set the SCSS for the social networks inside a "footer.scss" instead of "social-medias.scss". Dude even called the project manager to ask him about how he should handle that.
So, I had to go behind that colleague's chair and make him copy line by line the SCSS that was in the "wrong" file to put it in the right file. Why line by line, you may ask? Because I had to explain him why and how each of these lines were required to match what was asked in the models.
Not to mention how he freaked out because I (wrongfully, ok) used "fill" instead of "color" to change an SVG's color.
Keep it simple, stupid.7 -

When you are working late, is there a role on your team who grabs you dinner / does other odd jobs?
We used to have a producer job role, but those employees had their title changed to program manager at one point, and since the switch there really isnt a role whos obligations include grabbing dinner for the team on late nights and doing other odd jobs / tasks. How does your org handle this? Are you "entitled" to dinner if you stay late, or do you figure that out on your own?
Quick disclaimer: I kind of feel spoiled / ridiculous for expecting someone to grab me dinner, but if i'm working 12+ hours and I have to leave to get dinner, i might aswell just go home as my concentration is going to be broken and im sure the business would rather my butt in its seat coding.5 -

I just wanted to add my opinion about Linux. I have played around with computers since I was 5 and the last three years I have worked professionaly as a software developer. I have tried Linux many times and have to work with it regurarly on Raspberry Pi's, routers, servers etc. For two months ago I decided to try out Linux as my main desktop operating system. As my machine has some uncommon hardware (Celeron 3450) there was trouble from the start. Getting it installed wasn't as easy as just creating a bootable usb. I had to start a virtual machine and patch the iso with a script to make it bootable. I also had to install a third party bootloader, so just installing it probably took about half a day. To start off, I tried Manjaro, basically Arch with some extras. It looks great, was fast and easy on resources but I couldn't manage to install some essential tools that I needed. So I patched Linux Mint instead and installed it. I've tried all the DE's available, but unfortunatly everyone has some problem. Either it's sluggish or having screen tearing problems and/or buggy. I settled on XFCE as it seemed to work the best. Unfortunatly I have to live with horrendous screen tearing even though I tried many different window mannagers engines like compiz and metacity. Also whenever I plugged in a USB mouse, the keyboard died, requiriing a reeboot. Power settings were messed up so the laptop locked and asked for password twice sometimes and the battery life was 3 hours worse than Windows. The desktop theme bugged so window buttons (maximize, close) disappeared sometimes. I also had problems with the panel not showing when pressing the windows key, apparently that is impossible to fix. Firefox is also kinda bad, wasting like 15 pixels at the top for no reason and not offering many options though Vivaldi got this covered at least. Touchpad was weird too, didn't support gestures and had bad accuracy. During the install I was asked if I wanted to enccrypt my home folder, so I said yes. The other day I need to create a new partition and do some resiszing so I used gparted. Unforutnaly I managed to remove a partition that was encrypted, so after a reboot I coulnd't get into the OS anymore.
That was it, I used Linux Mint as my daily driver for 2 months and every single day I probably spent 0.5-1 hour fixing things. The OS was always in the way for me and what I wanted to do. Don't get me wrong. I love Linux in the sense that it is efficient and open (source) and it have basically taken over in alla areas except just desktops. The desktop experience (doesn't matter which DE) just plain sucks, or I just had bad luck.2 -

It's a beautiful day outside. I wish it were raining. We're forced to work Sunday and I already hate it.
There are 52 Sundays in a year, and 1/3 of them are covered in snow, ice and brutal winter. I don't want to be here today. I want to be outside.
Almost everyone in this room has a partner or kids or someone to go home to. I get to go home alone. I hate it here. I can't even look at my manager any more. I hate him. I will never do this again. No amount of money gets you a Sunday back.2 -

Working on a new project for my employer. Just like every project I've done for them, they ask for something incredibly specific, then look at me like I'm crazy when I build it. They ask for something completely different at every meeting, then ask if I can do it in two weeks.
Man, I have no idea what to do about these people.2 -
I thought I would be working on a cool web project, learning the best of the current technologies and techniques available. Turns out I'll be working on a JSON that the code will automatically render it on the UI through common components. I haven't touched any line of code so far. But hey, the indentation on my JSON looks nice.5

Look, I get that you want your front to be really, really, reallyyyy fancy! But when that fanciness comes at a price, more specifically speed! Then we're going to have a problem. Look... Not everyone has super fast internet, and when your website thinks it's better to load the entire website and not the sign in first, then we're going to have issues.
No it doesn't work that way. I don't want to be mounted by ads, Let me IN quickly and quietly, and we won't have any issues.
TLDR Front End developers like squeaky shiny and clean, but neglect the sign-in dialog -
Ran a test today. It was comparing whether a the reducer returned the correct state when a type and list is passed to it. The test failed. But something very curious happened. I am using webstorm and so the IDE told me 'click to see differences'. I did and the message at the top read as follows "The 2 lists are identical" (The expected and actual result). So my test worked but it didn't work. What is life!? I finally got it working though😕1

Anti climactic story time (as in there's no promotion in this story):
Sometime ago there were some organizational changes happening in my company that put me in a very tricky place. Theoretically, I was put on a level that was supposed to be an upgrade from my previous level. Practically, it didn't come with any benefits and it was actually a downgrade because anyone who joined the company in the six months before these changes was in the same level as me (who'd been in for roughly 2 years).
It felt really insulting because I was about to be actually promoted. My manager and his manager tried to gaslight me into believing that I'm not at all affected in any way, before giving in and agreeing that a mistake was made. I was promised that next year it'll be corrected and I'll be promoted two levels. Even the HR assured me of that. I knew it was too good to be true but I was too demotivated to find another job.
Fast forward one year. My bosses are all praises for the work I put in. But, no two level promotion. Reason? They tried but couldn't get the management to agree. The boss apologized to me and asked me if I wanted him to try again. What an insolent arse!
Fast forward one more, extremely glum year.
This time I am part of a different team so the team lead is different but the manager is same. The team lead really went all out with showing appreciation for me. He talked for almost an hour(!) about how I exceeded his expectations and went on to claim that his app's release would have been impossible if it weren't for me, the new team member. It was really humbling and satisfying. But what did I get? A limp handshake from the manager with fucking loose change.
Silver lining. At least the manager did away with the 'well wisher, on your side' pretense this time. No mentions of failed promises, just regular empty promises for the future.
Fast forward 3 months.
Still here. Recovering. I am mulling over a much better offer than what my current boss can give me. Thinking about how long it takes before I'm in the dumpster again. I have stopped giving any fucks about anything here. I try to do the minimum required unless it benefits me in some way.
The end.5 -
It is really really really sad, when you tried to make a complex thing work in many days. When you tested, it was working amazingly. When you were about to finalize delivery after one week, it fucked and stopped working. Now either you fix it, or find another BLOODY algorithm! 😠

It took me a month's time to adjust to working in co-working space last year and it took around similar this to adjust to working from home this year. Both working environments have there own pros and cons but somehow we all find a way to continue working.
Don't know what working environment lies ahead of me once this lockdown get's over but I hope I adjust again in similar manner there too :D -
Ugh! I'm trying to build a gulp-based workflow for WordPress theme development and it just isn't working (or flowing).
I'm debating whether to clear my gulpfile.js altogether and start again or attempt to build an npm-based workflow along these lines: https://keithcirkel.co.uk/how-to-us...2 -
I'm anti-social, but sitting alone in my home office day after day is starting to get to me.
Thinking of renting a desk at a co-working space.2 -
Have more faith in yourself and in your own abilities. Just because you don't know as much as your superiors who have been doing this stuff since you were a small child, it doesn't mean that you're a fraud!

Ah come on Microsoft... My brother gave me old tablet (windows tablet) so I could use it as Synthesia tablet for my piano. It worked fine and so, but we decided to do factory reset for it. There might have been something his work related stuff. Well we put it to do factory reset and we decided to make food and eat while it's doing it. Well 10min later error message popped up, "Reset error" nothing else, there was "Cancel" button but it didn't respond at all. Well had to do hard reset for it to get it moving forward. Well now it won't even start anymore... ffs.. Have to go buy otg cable now...

So I've been running into a bug on my arch/budgie system. It's not a huge deal but just something that bothers me a little. Basically, the nm-applet isn't displaying the network icon in the main panel, aka taskbar. Seems to be something specific to budgie maybe? Bc it appears in gnome and the network appears to have started in both cases. Anyways, I've searched around online with no solutions yet :/ A workaround I've had was to install network-manager-applet and have that start up instead. Seems to work until you click the icon and then click away and it disappears, aka I guess kills the process. Any other solutions or has anyone experienced this?3

I'm doing this refactor in a project.
Got stuck on a decision that is not mine to make.
Colleague has a day off and could not respond.
I could not continue in either direction. Because the solutions I found are not improving the issue.
How to deal with such an issue?2 -

Hey! Here's my problem: I am a german guy with pretty fluent english. When I will be done with my bachelor's (or master's, depending on my preference in 3 years) degree, I've decided I'd like to live/work in america; if that is at least somewhat easily possible. Ofc I'd have to get someone to hire me first, but I'll probably find at least something (what kind of company would be best? something like google? a start up?)
I tried googling how to become a citizen, how to work, how to live in america etc. but it's just so many different requirements and statuses and rules and forms that I would have to spend a very large amount of time, which might be wasted. So I thought I'd ask you guy's whether it's possible. /r/america (or similar, it was quite some time ago) didn't respond to my questions.
What do I need to know? What do I need to own? What do I need in terms of skills? What would help my chances? How long does this normally take? Is being a white male german a benefit? How much? Could I stay there permanently or would it be a stay-as-long-as-you-have-a-job sort of scenario? What kinds of precautions can I take?
Is it advisable to go there? If not, what are good english-speaking alternatives? What are non-english alternatives (e.g. I thought about sweden; they seem to have great laws, people, internet, scenery)?3 -
So working from home due to UK Gov lockdown. iTunes on, and the perfect power anthem comes on... Productivity up 110%
