Boss 1: You have such a dedicated team of workers, how do you make them all come in time?
Boss 2: Its simple, 30 employees, 20 parking spaces.15
Dells XPS are made of magic. [long story, major fuckup, 10k+ damages]
It all started in December. One morning I was late to work, drove there as fast as possible. (I live like 3 minutes away so me being late really meant *late*) Parked my car in a secluded car park, grabbed my backpack and ran to work. The car park is like 100 meters away from work so I took my feet into my hands and ran. Next thing I know my heels loose all grip while I go down a small slope and I drop on my back full force. On a sharp edged stone. With only my 1700$ XPS in it. Fuck.
I paniced, but got up and ran to work. I checked on the notebook, praying it would boot. It booted! Holy shit. I flipped the notebook and saw two small dents in the aluminum shell. I was thorougly impressed. I later discovered that it left a small shadow on the display, but given what a hit that was (I am not exactly a lightweight), impressive would be a massive understatement.
Fast forward to February, I am weighing my options to get the screen replaced maybe, as damage on my hardware (even if neglectable) triggers some sort of OCD and makes me feel bad 24/7. Also my laptop tends to shut off from time to time, looked into the Event Viewer and saw kernel panic. I figured that the battery probably still took a hit and that it drops voltage from time to time and the kernel assumes a critical situation, thus shutting off.
It stayed quite snowy in Austria up until March, so occasional snowing wasn't rare. Got out of work one day, saw it snowed a bit. Whatever. I had my moms car at the time, so I tried if it would slide a bit if I donut on the now (5pm) empty parking space. Nothing. Drove done a small hill, ABS triangle lit up red (board computer can't outbalance the snow). I drove out to the main street where everything was salted and drove along towards my house. Took a turn into my street, accelerated for a bit and then went off the gas so the car would smoothly drive along with the speed slowly degrading. So I went off the gas and noticed I was a bit to the right, no wonder, centrifugal forces.
"Huh seems like I need a bit more"
*car still doesnt move much*
"What the- go to the left!"
*steers left hard*
"Fuck that wall is coming closer"
*car doesnt break*
"FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!"
Everything got quiet in seconds, me waking up to an open airbag, ripped pants, a hurting wrist, the radio somewhere on the ground and fumes that smellt like burning wires. I grabbed my backpack that was now somewhere on the floor instead of on the seat and ran outside, tears in my eyes and the phone on my ear calling my mom. I walked inside as she walked outside, hearing a weeping scream that I haven't heard from her since I am alive. While walking inside I noticed my backpack was wet on the bottom, my 2 litre water jug shattered when my backpack hit the dashboard. I tried to stay calm and act rational, knowing that every second counts when It comes to water damage. I hastely searched for some rice and a bag to put my laptop into, stuffed the bag with both and went outside. The car was totaled, my mom pissed and crying. And I was in shock, sad, angry and hurting.
I kept the laptop on my heater for a few days, bagged in rice. I dared to try a boot after a while and you wont believe me, it fucking booted. Even the keyboard backlight worked, just the screen was obviously broken in the back (no color distortion or bad pixel rows though!!) and the aluminum shell had a dent on the front. I talked with Dell Support a few days later, asking if it would be ok to open the XPS up so I could drain all of the water. She said yes thats fine, as long as I dont touch anything or screw around with it.
She said I can send it in and get it checked, but the pickup and analysis will cost 150$ and I can go from there.
I sent it in and estimated that, because battery, screen and other things probably needed changing, it will be around 900$.
Got a call a few weeks later:
"Hello beggarboy, the repair team reported back to us and said that they will have to replace everything, which will be 1700$."
"Fuck... Buying a new one is cheaper.."
"Yeah I know I am sorry about that, I can offer you a voucher so you can buy a new one for 250$ off if you would prefer that"
"Sorry but I will need some time to consider"
The agent clearly noticed I was bummed about it.
After going back and forth what to do I got another call a few days later.
"Hello beggarboy, we talked a few days ago. I have good news"
"Hello, yes, speak up?"
"I was able to get a special offer for you after putting in a few words..."
The next thing she said seemed unreal to me.
She was able to cut 600$ (!!!), making the new offer 1100$, instead of 1700$ or a new one for 1500$. I figured the reason she probably did that was because I am always very polite with support members. Always.
My XPS is back and healty again.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Dells XPS are made of magic.15
- "Finance are too busy to look at this"
- "Finance have too much to do"
- "We can't this sorted at the minute because finance are overloaded"
Finance just sent me a request for "detailed description" for each business trip i've made. Attached is a spreadsheet report with 122 columns detailing every facet of my travel expenses that they have recorded so far. Not even just one row per trip, but one row per item, like:
- Trip 1 - Airport parking: .....
- Trip 1 - Airfare Outbound: ....
- Trip 1 - Airfare Inbound: ....
This is way you are too busy, because this is fucking ridiculous. Fix your shitty process and stop bitching.
FYI, your "detailed descriptions" can be found in the contracts we've signed, which outline all the travel needs, which you've already reviewed and signed off on. Get your shit together and stop bugging me3
Told some guy who was parking next to the emergency exit to move his car. He was like "uhm, well, you're not going to have an emergency anyway.."
*fire alarm starts*
Perfect timing ^^5
Sitting in the parking lot at work not wanting to go inside. Something needs to change, I am so bored here. I love coding...but not here.8
Racism is still a thing in Germany...
At 11 am, I parked my car in to the right parking lane. It didn't cross any line. A woman in her 50s had the door to my side open and still didn't decide to close it, when I was parking.
Anyways, I got ready to get out of the car. All of the sudden, she knocked on my door. I did open the window.
[Short break: S=She and M=Me]
*Dialogue starts here*
S: How dare you park here?! Over there *points to the next parking slots next to her car* is enough place for your car.
M: I am allowed to park here. Plus, I am not crossing your lane. Aside from that, your door was open. Close the door first (before you fucking yell at me, you bitch - I didn't say this tho.).
S *completely ignores what I just said and focuses on my first phrase*: Of course, you are allowed to park here. But you are also allowed to go back to Turkey! *goes back to her car*
M *completely shocked and thinks about what I have been doing wrong and how Turkey is even related to this parking situation*: FUCK OFF!
*notes her license plate*
*finally gets out of the car. locks it. walks slowly in front of her car, when she just wants to drive away from the parking slot just to annoy the shit out of her with a big ass grin in my face waving at her*40
A few days ago I went to my local bank again to check my balance and see whether some transfers that I've been waiting for have been completed.. as I was walking there - headphones on, music full blast - I was zoning out a bit. Of course I was, not like I have to mind cars in the middle of bumfuck here. There's hardly any in this town. So meh.
Now that day there was one.. I was just about to cross the road and suddenly looked left, and there it was. A mindless meatbag behind the wheel of a killing machine - an average driver. Visibly startled I suddenly stopped and waited for her to drive away. At this point she was about 20-ish meters away and already stopped. Come on bitch.. I already stopped and I am not going to cross this road as long as you're here. Hit the fucking pedal.
So she accelerated again.. and drove to the parking spot at the other side of the road, then stopped there. Oh, cool. Maybe she needs to be somewhere in this town. … Not at all. Bitch accelerates again, and stops yet again 2 parking spots further. What the fuck (ಠ_ಠ).. and I thought that I was an idiot...
Then she accelerates yet again and drives away. Looked after her, astonished by the amount of brain damage she just caused to me. Must've been a Facebook user.. holy fucking shit. Through what kind of black magic do these people get a driver's license?!4
Why can’t motherfuckers look where they’re going?
Went to the petrol station to put some more air in my tyres.
Some old dude was reversing out of a parking spot and had turned left so was now reversing along th back of the other parked cars.
I pulled into the car park, saw Home reversing and stopped, he was well clear of other cars, but he kept going back, I gave a little toot toot of the horn, but he decided to keep going and hit me.
It’s not the end of the world, and his insurance will cover it, but it will knack my no claims bonus.
Fucking Sunday’s, I shit ‘em18
There are two ways to give advice, example:
Car is parked badly:
"Hey mate, your car is parked badly."
"Hey asshole, did your mother teach you to drive or what, such shit parking, you should go and kill yourself."
Notice one is fact based and rather devoid of personal insults and emotional triggers..
Unlike the last one..
Why are so many folk, like the last example..14
I’m sitting in the parking lot 1.5 hours early to start my new job today. I’ve been rather nervous about it since I accepted the job offer in early December. I’m going to be working with completely foreign tools and software stacks than what I’m used to. I never said I was pro or experienced at this tech stack, let them know during the interviews repeatedly that I’m just getting started with this kind of work and tech stack (devops role using jenkins and ansible mostly). And my experience and knowledge is limited to theoretical understanding of how these tools work together.
I’m excited to get to learn all kinds of new tech and push myself. But I’m also terribly nervous about how quickly I can pick this all up so I’m not a burden to the team.17
I left for lunch early to drive five miles away to an abandoned parking lot so that I could cry about an email I received... this week has been fantastic.14
Parked the car in a parking lot 15 mins before job interview. Plenty of time to spare.
Go to pay for parking.
Ticket machine doesn't accept cards. Fine, I have notes.
Ticket machine doesn't accept notes. Shit, I need to go get change quick.
FUCKING FUCKER DOESN'T ACCEPT £1 COINS WELL WHAT THE FUCK TO YOU ACCEPT THEN YOU FUCKING FUCK I'M GOING TO BE LATE FOR MY JOB INTERVIEW OR GET A £80 FUCKING PARKING FINE9
This week ended with a bang :)
I’ve been working on two massive emergency projects at work for three weeks. One was a brand new demo to be presented in front of my executive board. 2 days, 2500 lines of code. Only one hour to debug, and then worked. The team I did it for was in total disbelief, so that made me feel good. The other was a massive fix to my main project (the project is over 100 million lines of code). The diff is over a megabyte (thats 3 floppy disks in single side format) and I worked 165 hours the last two weeks to draft it, and only took me 6.5 hours to debug it. It’s the most insanely complex subsystem in any software I’ve ever worked on. I delivered it today ahead of schedule (kind of, it’s due in a few hours) and the validation team said all the tests ran perfectly and there was absolutely no back and forth. They called my boss and told him I’m a legend. So feeing very accomplished.
After days like this I feel like I could die and it would be fine because I’m just that happy. I’m going to go home now and sleep (been sleeping in my car in the parking lot because didn’t have enough time to commute)
I heard a voice in my head when I sent out that branch “Luke, you’ve turned off your targeting computer.” I said “it’s alright, don’t worry” out loud. I think my coworkers are concerned.17
I went to get groceries yesterday, and it was raining but not hard. No big deal.
So when I pull back into the parking lot at my apartment complex, a large metal object catches my eyes.
"Holy shit I think that's a computer! I better run grab it and get inside to see if I can salvage anything!!"
So I park and run over to it. I get a few yards away from it and see what it actually was..... Someone's nasty ass broken microwave.
I got so excited and it all came crashing down after a few seconds10
Today was just marvelous. Locked up my car with keys inside and with engine on.
I was driving back home from work. I drove to a parking near home, which is really long, narrow and impossible to turn around. So I decided to get out of a car, for like, 30 secs and go check, if there were any unoccupied parking places. Parking brake; I stepped out of the car and closed the door. Click.
I knew, that I needed to change contacts in the driver door, that sometimes were triggering central car lock, but I didn't expecting such outcome.
So, I am outside.
Engine is on.
My backpack and phone were inside.
Luckily, one neighbor wanted to drive somewhere, so I explained, why he can't donit, why my car is here and asked to watch my car for 5 mins while I will run home.
So I ran home in home to find a second pair of keys.
After some time, LUCKILY, I found them, went back and unlocked my car...
Moral: don't delay things.. Small fixes to prolong life of some object will eventually fail in very, very uncomfortable manner.
I'm glad I found spare keys and there were no need to break my own car window... And I DO care about my car and do lot of things by myself.1
I have this side project that I’ve been working on for the past 6 years part time but over the past 2 years just as a sysadmin to keep it running, it’s unpaid work but whatever, dropping in once a month or so doesn’t worry me.
Well the owner of the domain hasn’t been reachable for nearly 9 months and the domain expired a while back, not much I can do about that, so I pushed everything over to work at the IP level while I reach out and wait - that was 2 months ago while I waited for the owner to renew it or for the domain to fall.
Today the domain fell, so I jumped on to buy it back up only to find its already purchased... 😦
so I find the owner, it’s fucking parked on a shitty “buy me” page with a price tag of $4500 USD. Fuck these slimy hoarding domain parking bastards.
I know the site was on its last legs, low membership and traffic but I’ll be fucked if I’m paying that much to reacquire it.
I was in second year of University when I joined the internship, I knew the business idea sucks and he wouldn't be able to carry out the operations either. Little did I know that I will work with the dumbest team ever, literally, the dumbest.
So, the major chunk of the software was outsourced to a consultancy. I was a tech intern, and we were developing an Android App that will save your parking location, let you reserve locations and all etc.
I knew I have stepped on a wrong turf, but again, I had nothing better to do that summer. So, for a very meager stipend, I said yes to a very stupid project. Let the stupidity flow...
~ The boss, had quit his job for this dumb idea with no funding, no team, nothing.
~ He was pursuing a certification course in Android Development from somewhere, where their final project will be a calculator!
~ He had little to no tech skills, hardly knew Java but was leading an Android App Dev project in Java. He had little to no managerial, marketing or sales skills either.
~ For a brief period, I had to work along with the consultancy guys to ramp up their work. They would take backups in a USB drive every evening, and share each others code using the same. VCS died a painful death that day.
~ They hardly wrote functions, rather, wrote very long code in the main (onCreate) function. Code style died of cancer.
~ They couldn't compress an image before sending it to a server. I had to do it for them.
~ Had no concept of creating utility classes.
And best of all,
~ Wrote 20 cases (switch case) with the same code! Instead of using a loop...2
You do know that "why do I need you if I can copy-paste code from SO?" joke floating around, right? Today I had a real-life situation perfectly illustrating it.
So I bought a set of parking sensors. Cheap ones, from AliExpress. Prolly the cheapest ones I could find. Installed them w/ engine turned off. All seemed fine. Cleaned it all up, got ready to go, started the engine and beeeep beeep beeepeeeeep beepp ..... beeeeeeeeep.
Tried unplugging/replugging them one-by-one to find the faulty one. Nada. Apparently they all were false-alarming. They must all be bad, bcz they seem to work well w/ engine turned off (ignition on) and only false-alarm when engine is on.
Allright, I'll get a new set next weekend, a more expensive one and replace them again.
There goes my €20 and another week basically w/o parking sensors (car length is >5 meters, so sensors do help a lot).
Today I spend a few hours removing my rear bumper again, replacint all the sensors, wiring, etc. Tests show promising results - all sensors seem OK even w/ engine on! Close it all up, start a car again and.... beeep bep bep beeep beeee..eeeeppp.
Another 30min-hour goes by while looking for a possible culprit. And I found it. The fix could did not take longer than 5 seconds. Apparently a wire feedint the sensors' controller was too close to sensors' wires. All I had to do is to push that wire a lil further from the controller with my index finger.
I could have saved €30, a week of time, half a day of work if I only knew what wire to [literally] poke.
Fuck NYC....just got hit with a fucking parking ticket for double parking. $115. *sigh* *pets cat in sadness*17
- I need heat shrink tubes
- go to aliexpress, find the one set I need, order
- receive them to my PO, use a few of them
- I needed parking sensors
- to to aliexpress, find the set I need, order
- the parcel arrives in my country, on its way to my PO
- Today I visit a random site
Conclusion: AI is great at knowing what I have already bought and suggesting the exact same items I've ordered. Because if you've ordered them once you're likely to order them again, right?3
When I drove up the parking lot, I had a feeling that this was a special day. Not "good" special, but "BAD" special.
I parked my car, went out, double checked to I got my headphones with me and walked in.
People where not at the places, they where talking to each other. Not talking but everyone where at some different place.
I have seen this before, when people is not working at they desk - that means that something is not working as it should and they are not telling.
I went directly to the serverroom, and directly noticed that one rack was completly black. No power. And the monitor server was one of the victims - FUCK.
I had someone reject me the follow me to the parking lot and ask me to teach them Jira in their spare time. 😂😂😂2
Today I almost lost my not a year old motorcycle.
I parked my motorcycle in a parking lot, kept the key on the seat and left. After an hour I realised that I hadn't brought my key after locking my motorcycle. I ran to the parking lot like a mad bull. Fortunately my motorcycle was not stolen and the key was still there on the seat. 😌
! dev. I had to pick up a parcel at lunchtime. Coming out of the shop, there was a parking enforcement officer (what we used to call traffic wardens) standing in front of the door, fiddling with his ticket machine, blocking my exit.
"Excuse me, you can't park there", I said.
He wasn't very amused, miserable bastard.
Last office building I worked at, the company across the hall recycled old PCs for businesses. They had two reserved parking spots in the building parking lot right up front. The signs read "Employee of the Month"
Every day when I came in the owner's $80k luxury car was parked in the middle of both spots.
I saw my previous manager in the parking lot today and I remembered I haven't processed my clearance yet. I resigned last February and haven't been in that office since November last year. My laptop is still in my locker.
She was smiling, looking at a distance while holding hands with her boyfriend so I waved at her face to get her attention.
Her: "Oh hi! How are you?"
Me: "I'm good. I haven't processed my clearance!"
Her: "Really? Okay, just come to the office around this time."
Me: "Okay but I have no money!" (I said I would treat them when I get better, I've been depressed.)
Her: "That's fine."
She looked great, seems so cool and happy these days. It must be all that sperm she's getting or the absence of a wendigo (me) in her office.
I think I should process that clearance soon. I could use some cash. After all, I "unintentionally" filed my resignation after the new year to refresh my vacation leaves so they can be converted to cash. Let's see if they will pay me or I will pay them.8
Had a fun adventure this morning. Had to deliver some bags to some houses. Entered the addresses in Google Maps. Off we go. First house, no problem. Second house, and Google is taking me on a weird route, through some parking lots and stuff. Finally, it wants me to turn onto a bike trail. WTF? My Google maps is set for bike routes. Went a lot faster when I set it to car. No wonder there were so many bikes and the road seemed so narrow.4
I was just on my way to work back from the University cafeteria when a guy in a black car - who I thought was moving the car out of a parking lot - stopped the car and asked if I had a second.
Naive me, thinking he might need directions or something decided to listen to him.
He looked older, around 60ish, with sunglasses on ( making it harder for me to read him).
He said that he had a stroke (or something) a few years ago and got damage to his brain, so that sometimes it can happen that he would faint. Therefore, he cannot go swimming unsupervised, and was asking if I would have the time to accompany him to the university lake, so that he could swim for an hour or so. He offered to pay me 40 bucks.
Me, being paranoid af, declined politely, saying I have to go to work ( which was actually true).
He goes on to say how he was a teacher, how he worked at the university before, how I look trustworthy, how I am the first person he asks today, and asked if he could have my number, so that he could call me sometime to supervise the swimming. I would just need to look out for him not to drown and if anything looks weird I should alarm the people working at the lake ( lookouts? not sure what they are called).
I kept declining politely and he backed off, letting me go without any fuzz.
Previously he also mentioned how some students are rich, others are poor, and how he would have done anything for 20 bucks back in the day. But also said that he accepts a no and won't bother me further.
He also mentioned he wouldn't lay a hand on me, that he is not a creep, since I could see his car and license plate, and if I gave him my number, I would also have his. That I shouldn't worry about anything, if I later decided to say no he would delete my number, and that he is not big on the technology and Internet so nothing would happen.
Uhh... well if he was genuine I'm sorry for him, but then you can just ask authorities at the beach to pay more attention to you, no?
Mentioning "all my worries" raised a red flag for me sort of.
Also, if you keep on fainting occasionally, even if you haven't fainted in 2 years, how are you allowed to drive? Or actually, why do you even drive then?
I don't know. The more I think about it, the more I think I should have taken a picture of the car or license plate.
And there are literal services for this kind of thing. Pretty sure you can get one of these if you are willing to pay even.
Jeez now I'm worried for the entire population of my university...10
OMG!!! Stop with the image captchas, Shopify and other sites that do this! Good grief! Is this my life now? Budgeting extra time with my clients just to log into websites? That last login took a full 5 minutes of clicking on traffic lights, buses, cars, crosswalks, and parking meters. I swear, when the Singularity apocalypse happens, we'll be attacked by traffic lights, buses, cars, crosswalks, and parking meters.2
You know how it is, you are doing ok with your tatty made from salvaged spaceship dodging the pirates and doing a spot of mining.
When you start asking for advice..
How could I do things better ?
Well, everyone and their dog says what a rubbish setup you got and how you should get a top of the line model Tesla or something.
So, after much research about how much better those are, and listening to everyone else, you trade in your old model for a newer one..
Then you find out what a piece of junk it is !
It's 10 times more complicated to use, not really fun anymore..
It isn't quite as good, you worry it is going to break every time you park and bump the side of the parking bay..
Too late now, you traded in your old piece of junk that you loved..
It's just not the same..
It looks prettier I guess..
Perhaps that is a metaphor for relationships. :-)6
Today stayed few hours of overtime again in work to make more progress before incoming deadline. As I was just to leave office my coworker who was overstaying too asked for help with one last thing today and then we go. I helped him and in that time some guy hit my car on parking :p
Perfect. Now I'm out of personal time AND car for a week.1
There is an electricians shop just outside my apartment. Their favorite thing to do is yell conversations across the parking lot in the hour after dawn.
They finally shut up an hour before I need to go into work, when it's too late to fall back asleep. Ugh.4
Did I ever tell anyone how much I hate phone interviews? I have had them where people were on speaker phone and I could hardly understand them, foreign accents I could not understand or people reading questions off of the internet. I usually have to do these while walking around the parking lot on my job. My hands and ears freezing in the cold or 100+ degrees in the summer. I just hate it. Now I feel better. Oh yeah I have a country accent so I am doomed from the start anyway. ByVal or ByRef ? Difference between abstract and interface? Here we go again.
Clearly automated vehicles are not ready for India. As a human I can say the person is trying to explain the no parking sign through words. Systems have to be trained to judge these too :O6
Parking here fucking sucks.
I just made a url shortcut for finding parking, it redirects to the site of a parking lot 15 miles away, because if you get here after 8am, there is no parking. If you want me to work, then give me a place to park my car. Spend some of that executive bonus on building a new parking garage you dog rocket sucking suits.1
I don't know if we already had a weekly rant about petty revenge or anything, but I did just pull some petty bullshit maybe 30 minutes ago.
A couple people I know are trying to start a clothing brand (think I posted something about it on here before) and asked me to build the website cause one of them found out I write code. (Well, he asked if I was good with computers and I told him that I am, and he basically said "you're building our website then")
Basically these people are..not good people. One of them has a history of sexually harassing girls (some of which are really close friends of mine), the other one is basically following in his footsteps. They also like to go to the parking lot of an elementary school (the one that my little sister goes to actually) and get high.
Both of them have fucked me over at some point in the few years I've known them. And so now my silent indirect petty revenge begins. Earlier I bought the domain name for the online store they're trying to (make me) build. Considering having the site redirect to a gay porn site.
One of them is currently getting into shit having to do with drugs, which is not my doing, but I can probably find a way to get them into trouble. Especially the fact that they're doing drugs in the parking lot of an elementary school. That shit's just fucked up, no exceptions.
Anyone have any suggestions for shit I could do to them?2
Heads up , not a tech rant
So I now know what you should say if your kid asks what kind of person you should or should not be
So in the picture (sorry it isn’t clear , was taken late night after work) was a common parking area , the bikes parked you see are parked leaving space between at least for 2 more bikes. The owners usually park it that way cos they are too lazy to “properly park”. I confronted them last month and they said they’ll look into it , they have been contacted by various people from my area about this mattter , but it seems they don’t think it matters
So kids , learn to be considerate and not a douche bag , learn to listen and act , not act and listen , and last of all , learn to be a better person , that’s what humans have been trying to do for hundreds of years2
Over the past five years in the company I work, I've seen profits drop and headcounts drop. I must say there's no particular reason for it other than globalisation. Yet I see that the number of high-end European imports in parking lot has jumped by 10-12 at least.
I guess globalisation doesn't affect ever body equally!
Capitalism is a wonderful con-cept indeed.2
What all are the infrastructure related issues you face in your organization day to day?
Cooling / Blower
Coffee machine sucks
these all our mine :( , add yours :D3
At school during my first Java project we had to make a simulation of a parking garage and what effects price changes would have in order to find the most optimal business model from some company.
At the project kick off.
School: "we will be checking your code for plagiarism. if you use code from the internet, even if its 2 lines you need to mention the source. otherwise you will fail this cource."
We go on to do the project.
Friend of mine who was in another class sees a group presenting a 2 days old version of my teams application. theres literaly a credits button that displays the names of the people that worked on it in a popup.
Me: mentions to a teacher that my project was stolen.
They literaly didnt even change the name and pulled the entire repository from github and handed it in.
The fucking teacher doesnt even check the code / git logs after i mentioned that the entire codebase was stolen from a public github repository.
There was an endless mountain of proof to support my claim such as our team members names hard coded in the code they handed in and about 500 commits from our accounts.
I will from now on NEVER EVER mention sources when i hand in code at school.1
Yay my first day back and I'm 1 hour and 15 minutes late because the main road I take into work was a parking lot. And then I have to go directly into the world's longest meeting. And I have a peer review to do so I guess no dev soon for me today.
I walk past the datacenter where our stuff is on my way to work and I go nerd spotting in their parking place...17
Had to do the FizzBuzz test in PHP. Proceeded to creat a range(1, 100) before the for loop instead of using the loops own index #. Worst part is I realized what I had done in the parking lot after I left. They asked me multiple times how I could optimize the code too lol.
Two co-workers came late to our team-event because the POI on GMaps wasn't set accurately to the parking lot of the location.
We became dependent...
maaan its such awkward, if you're chilling on a supermarket parking lot, with your 20mph moped drinking your one end of work beer and also have long hair and long beard 😂 im always thinking the people think im a homeless or something like that.. fml what a world1
Do you ever feel like now that you reached your goal of being a developer that there is nothing left to look forward to? I feel like all the best parts of my life are over. I will never have a first love again, I will never be young again, and all that’s left is working a shit job where everyone else could give two shits less about craftsmanship so I can survive and then eventually dying.
A week ago I climbed on to the ledge of the parking garage and intended to jump. But I got scared and climbed back over and threw up everywhere. I feel like I am in a better place now, but I still don’t know what I am living for. It all feels so pointless. Does anyone else on devRant feel that way right now?4
let's call him Richie. Richie doesn't listen in team meetings, does not have any clue of what we are doing and what the important topics are. Richi is hiding between the cars in the parking house to not have to talk to you on the 2min way to the office. Richie is 'done' when he encounters any problems in his work so we have to do it. Yeah, we all love Richie...3
At the parking garage downtown.
Reported issues with 4th floor "down" arrow buttons for the elevator a couple of times. Elevator and inside buttons still worked fine.
A couple of weeks later, elevator is turned off.2
You are definitely a dev when: it's 5:30, you and your coworker are in the parking lot, both about to get in your cars, and...he calls you over to ask about how you fixed a bug1
I haven't had anything dev related to rant about in a few weeks due to the fact that I haven't done any developing in a few weeks. I have a lot of personal shit going on that I'm slowly getting past. Basically some shit went down, the girl I posted about a few times, we're just friends at this point. My best friend won't talk to me and hasn't in about 2 weeks now. Fun.
Then there's the fact that I have school Monday through Friday, and work Thursday through Sunday, so I get zero days off. So I just..don't have the time to do developing right now. But, here's a kinda funny story (not that funny)
So this Sunday, I was leaving work. I decided to roll my car's window down to say bye to a few people as I was pulling out of the parking lot. It was cold so I went to roll my window back up....and it's fucking stuck. I'm sitting in about 15°F (-9.5°C) with no driver's side window. Turned out the fucking motor that moves the window had died. And I had no money to get it replaced. So I did the logical thing, I called my mom to try and figure out what I should do. She was asleep but my dad picked up. He called me a dumbass and said he'd pay to get it fixed, since it was his car before and he never told me that the window was faulty.
Actually got it fixed just yesterday by my cousin. Then I went to get my paycheck (a whole $200!) since my work has my name spelled wrong in their system so I currently can't do direct deposit (gonna talk to the general manager about that tomorrow). And now I'm just sitting in bed, waiting for my check to go through. (As I was typing that last sentence, someone from my bank called actually). I would really appreciate that $200 right now, cause I have about $2 after paying for car insurance and gas and stuff. I actually need to fill up my gas soon too..3
😤 So I just got a flat tire at night and have incomplete set of tools to change a tire. Good thing my father helped me. It was tiring and gruesome. I suspected someone intentionally did it in the parking lot beside the mall.😡
I'll buy tomorrow a crocodile jack and complete set of tools. Also, I will practice more on changing tires because my father did not teach me and I just learned through self study. But self study isn't enough, gotta practice some more. I hope you will get some lesson to my mistakes.
When your car got empty battery and won't start in a mall parking lot. This is life. I will buy an extra battery next time and study on how to install it myself.
I need some help with parking a domain in ovh.com webhosting. It's a real pain in the ass so any input is strongly appreciated. I kinda figured out what todo already, but still need some clarification.
Normally after buying a webhosting all I would need to do is login to my domain registrar's website and in the control panel just change nameservers to webhosting nameservers and that's all. Webhosting provider would take care of the rest (subdomain creation, e-mail creation and etc.) But because OVH are assholes, they support this type of domain parking only for domains registered at OVH.
For external domains, procedure is as follows:
For the configuration to function, you will need to make the following adjustments with the current provider:
Insert a TXT record for the domain ovhcontrol.mydomain.com with the value jwyPolzgrZyIShzaQItqw
Point the A record of your domain mydomain.com to 220.127.116.11
Point the A record of your domain www.mydomain.com to 18.104.22.168
So basically I had to login to registrars cPanel and first of all I had to park my domain back to my registrar (I had to switch to default nameservers which are provided by domain registrar)
Only then I got advanced access to dns zone in order to add the required records above.
When I open my domain registrars dns zone cpanel this is what I see:
So basically, as I understand, I just need to add these required records like this?
Am I correct?
So basically my OVH webhosting doesn't deal with dns zone at all, I will have to use my own registrar for adding subdomains?
What about e-mail addresses? OVH doesnt allow me to create emailboxes for "externally" parked domain addresses. Will I have to search for some e-mail provider, and add some additional records?
Any input/help would be appreciated.1
You realize you reached the top of your career when you are on top management meeting discussing actual freaking bikeshed! It's not an urban story! Those meeting actually happen! And actually few months later we got a real bikeshed on our parking lot!
Only downside was that there was almost no bikesheding on the bikeshed meeting :-/
Between rising fuel costs and forever increasing public transport fares, there appears to be no such thing as a cheap commute. With recent research revealing that the average commuter will spend £66,000 on travel costs during their working lives, it’s clear that more advice is needed on how to keep these costs to a minimum.
On Your Bike!
Aside from walking to work, this is by far the cheapest commute option as it doesn’t involve public transport or fuel costs. Plus, arriving at work on time will no longer depend on other people as you ride solo, cutting through the bad traffic. Of course some purchases need to be made, starting with a decent bike and the necessary safety equipment (helmet, high vis clothing, etc.) to ensure your protection on the road. However, if you buy wisely and take good care of your equipment, then it should last you a significant amount of time and keep the cost of your commute down. Furthermore, if your employer is involved in a Cycle to Work scheme, then you can receive financial help as they pay for your bike (and perhaps even some accessories), and then you pay it off via a number of monthly installments.
Sharing Is Caring
It makes sense, if someone is traveling to the same destination as yourself, to share the fuel expenditure by lift sharing. You can also split the price of any tolls or parking, allowing you both to reduce your spend even further. The more people who lift share, the less cars there will be on the road therefore choosing this method will also help to reduce traffic and emissions. So how can you get involved? Obviously, https://resumediscover.com/ suggest you to prefer to share your lifts with someone you already know, so check with colleagues and even friends that don’t necessarily work at the same company but who work nearby. If you don’t have any luck, then why not put a notice up at work? You may feel nervous approaching unknown co-workers at first, but think of the friendship you could make and of course the money you will save! Check out websites such as liftshare.com and blablacar.com to discover people making the same commute as you in your area.
Season Ticket Savings
Unfortunately, many commuters have no choice but to use public transport for their commute and with both bus and train fares continuously increasing, it’s difficult to find a way to cut costs. The best advice we can give you is to make sure you’re using season tickets as paying one lump sum will always save you money and hassle in the long run. Furthermore, you can ask your employer for a season ticket loan if you cannot afford the single payment and this will enable you to pay it back in monthly installments. Further savings can be had by investing in a PLUSBUS ticket which helps you to save money by reducing petrol and parking costs as you take the bus instead of your car to the train station. If you are eligible for a railcard then make sure you buy one in order to take up to a third off your fare.
So take control of your commute and try these money saving tips. Unfortunately, public transport fares are likely to continue to increase, therefore make a stand and force the government to realize the adequacy of these services by cycling or lift sharing instead. Remember, your employer may be able to help you with your commuting costs, so always ask about your options.4
