Manager: You really shouldn’t be doing that
Dev: It’s in my job description
Manager: Yeah but you still shouldn’t be doing it.
Dev: Who should I hand it off to?
Manager: We don’t have anyone else to hand off that task to.
Dev: Ok, do I stop doing it?
Manager: 😡 Of course not, it needs to get done! I’m just saying you shouldn’t do it.
Manager: Hurry up and login, I don’t have all day
Dev: One sec I have to lookup my password for the system
Manager: How can you not remember your password? Everything requires it these days
Dev: I use a different password for each service.
Manager: Wow you really like to overcomplicate things. Just use the same one for everything like I do, it’s way more efficient!
Manager: THE SERVER IS DOWN THE SERVER IS DOWN!!!!
Dev: Ok I’ll look into it
*5 mins later
Dev: Wow these are really strange logs, it’s like config values are being changed all over the place while I’m looking at it
Manager: Well I figured while you were looking into it I’d go i to the server settings and change everything I could find in order to try and get the server back up again. Two sets of hands are better than one, Is it up yet???
Manager: I THOUGT YOU SAID YOU’D LOOK INTO THIS. I NEED ANSWERS NOW. WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG?!?!?
Dev: Hey our current server is starting to chug a bit. Can I get approved for $1200 additional spend to double the speed?
Manager: *Sharp inhale*. We need this project to cost as little as possible, we really can’t justify spending any additional money for any reason right now.
*2 days later*
Manager: YOU ARE APPROVED FOR $100,000 TO IMMEDIATELY IMPLEMENT SOMETHING RELATED TO NFTs IN ANY OF OUR APPS. THE BUSINESS NEEDS TO EXPAND INTO THE METAVERSE ASAP IMMEDIATELY. I NEED AN ETA BY EOD AS TO WHEN THIS CAN BE ROLLED OUT.
My bosses, bosses, boss asked to call me up unexpectedly:
BBBoss:" Just wanted to say we are really happy with your performance, especially in these tough circumstances, ... "
Me thinking: "Ah, great I am getting laid off."
BBBoss: " ... which is why we decided to give you and extra 1000$ in you next paycheck."
Me: "??? ... for real."
BBBoss: "yes, thank you for your hard work."
Me: "I am still employed?"
BBBoss (laughs) :"Yes, we are happy to have you."7
Demoing a new feature in the Dev environment.
Me: The images are just placeholders. The communications team are still coming up with appropriate images.
Management: Can we change that image? It doesn't really fit the theme of what we are trying to achieve.
Me: As mentioned earlier, all images are just placeholders. Continues demo.
Management: That image also doesn't really fit with the theme. Can we change that one too?
When I self-published my first indie game on steam and people actually started buying it.
Remember sitting on the floor with a bottle of vodka trying to tell my girlfriend like that lunatic dotconnecting on a whiteboard meme guy, this is really bad because too much people bought it.
They should spend their money on something useful instead of me, I felt like a fraud.
It turned out good in the end tho, made some updates for it that made it better so i felt better about it, plus got a job from a publisher because they liked my game 😃6
One thing I've learned repeatedly over the last 20 years is that companies are generally not deserving of your loyalty.
By all means, show up, apply yourself, and do your best work, that's just being a professional. But never get emotionally invested in a company you don't own.
There are really only two reasons for staying: earning or learning, ideally both. Once you have exhausted your current employer's limits in this regard, move on, you don't owe them anything.3
Man do I love receiving bug reports and comments in Turkish, Russian, Portuguese or Iranian. I should really just start replying to those in Polish.
I added a humorous pinned post saying “By the way, I can only reply to you either in English, Polish or Dutch :)” to the program where I receive such reports.
I am aware it won’t do jackshit, because people can’t read.
In retrospect, being open about autism in the workplace was a very bad decision.
My manager and CTO got to know about it and since that moment, every single thing I do has a different meaning to them.
All my technical decisions have to be validated by someone else, and my critique about how certain things are done is dismissed as if I were some kind of alien.
I really wonder when they're gonna ask me about their future or something.28
HR: Hey you really need to be more sensitive with what you say
Dev: What makes you bring this up?
HR: Well we had a concerned employee overhear you telling one of the interns that the Russian word for “approved” is “blyat”.
I applied to Amazon recently not really thinking about it I was just bored. Dropped my CV and I was asked to fill in why would I want to work in that position. I un-ironically put “It sounds like a lot of fun”, got rejected instantly then got an unrelated message from an Amazon recruiter from another division inviting me to apply, rejected it because it didn’t sound as fun.
I’m an honest bloke I just want to have fun.12
Got a job as a controls engineer. Told my parents.
Parents: Good Job!
Brother: Bro! How you make so much money?
Me: I went to a tech school and learned how to do technical stuff.
Brother: Oh... fuck that shit!
Everyone was really supportive. Been slowly gravitating from controls to more pure software. But a lot of the software I write is for controls and automation of machines.7
My college organised some interview with a company, with the whole demn class. We went there, it was quite far away (50km) and the CEO invites us to a meeting room.
Where he bores me for 2 hours talking about their projects in argiculture and NSA like spying systems at tankstations.
They were caputuring license plates at gas stations and with that information gather data about the person, such as salary (by looking at their car), house adres ect. All without people knowing. And than targeting them with specific ads and offers.
The class of sheep were super excited but it pissed me off. Because he told it like it was some awesome advancement in technology that none of us could probably ever do.
He was demeaning us, saying we would do some simple wordpress sites there and other things. We are probably not good enough forc te big stuff.
Asking him some really hard questions about his projects made him so pissed he almost wanted to kick me out.
When it was finally over, there was some test that you have to do if you want to work there. If you were good enough at the test, you could!!!! (YEEY)
Uhm, I said; no thank you I dont want to work here.
Later I talked to my classmate and friend who always thinks he's better then everyone in class even tho he barely understands OOP programming. He was asking me if he should try to get the internship. I told him; dont. They have no value for us and they think they are the greatest company on the planet.
The fucking idiot go so pissed, he stopped talking to me alltogether and blocked me everywere. I AM NOT EVEN JOKING. Just because I gave my FUCKING opinon about a company he likes for no reason.
So this idiot does the test (which was fucking simple btw, I did it too and compared the results and I had 95%) He gets invited for another interview and gets told he will be paid 200 euro's per month 😂. and a free meal everyday!! 😪 hahaha . That doesnt even cover commuting costs!
My "friend" told him that the train costs more every day. You know what the CEO said? "Yeah but you can learn so much here the also brings value and you're just a last year student. But I think you are really brave for asking more"
So in the end, he couldnt take the internship and I was fucking right. Really I hate these kinds of companies thinking they are heaven on earth when they are clearly not.
I am happy I told them no before putting my dignity on thd line.14
Fuck corporate bullshit. I do the job, you pay me, the rest is pointless crap.
You are not my family, I don’t base my whole self worth on working for you and mostly I really don’t care.
I’m really not cut out for this shit.9
Manager: How’s the progress coming along?
Dev: The section of code I’m working with is one of the more difficult ones so it’s a little slow
Manager: Ok well I didn’t write that section of the code
Dev: I’m not saying you did I’m just giving you the status update that you asked for
Manager: Ok well I can’t really do anything about that so how about you tell me something I can do something about instead of just complaining about code THAT I DIDN’T EVEN WRITE!! *Marks self as offline*
So my localization algorithm actually runs onboard my YouBot :)
My paper was basically torn apart by my professor, so I had to write some new classes and redo the whole experimental section. And all the other sections too. I resubmitted it to him after revisions, and the second iteration was way better - I'm really close to final paper level :)
I told my professor and postdoc that I will appreciate more support and positive feedback, because so far our communication was only very dry criticism. For me it's really devastating, because feeling like I constantly disappoint people just kills me on the inside.
It seems like they took it to heart, they have been nicer to me in the last few days :)6
I did just quit my job.
It was my first job ever.
The only job I've ever had.
But I kinda couldn't take it anymore, the pay was a bit too low and the projects were really demanding.
On Monday, I'll sign my new contract in another company, I'm REALLY looking forward to it and barely can wait!
I'll be working with just one tech-stack which is awesome compared to now where I have to work on like 5 different stacks, sometimes in a single day.
I can't wait for the new job to kick in.11
Manager: You know you really shouldn’t pay off your mortgage faster than you absolutely have to. It’s the cheapest money you’ll ever get!
Dev: I’d rather work towards being debt free. Besides my RRSP (401k) is already maxed out
Manager: RRSPs are a scam! TFSAs (Roth IRAs) are way better
Dev: My TFSA is maxed out too
Manager: 😡 You still shouldn’t pay off your mortgage!
Ah yes, write your own fucking website crawler in PHP and deoptimize so hard that it uses some gigabytes of RAM and takes about 1 hour to crawl the very own website it's running on.
Oh and don't forget to download every single image and video file in order to "crawl" it for extremely valuable text content.
What a genius move! I'm really impressed.6
Well one thing that became obvious today is that companies that make wifi routers really dont want you flashing other firmware on it.
For example i got a new router cause it was time.
Ofc fully compatible with OpenWRT. The thing tho ? The GUI flashing process accepts only encrypted binaries. And surprise we as customers cant encrypt it like they do.
So the next thing that comes to mind instantly is UART. They cant break that right ? Well turns out they can. They just disallow key inputs from console. So you cant make the damn device load into TFTP mode.
And D-Link has this lovely recovery utility that accepts unencrypted firmware. EZ way to flash it right ? WRONG. The garbage doesnt load second time after you load it once in 1 boot. And even if you get it to start loading the firmware. It wont really flash it.
Luckily there was an exploit :)
And joining via telnet and enabling http server on PC and wget-ting the binary from there. And flashing.
Honestly now. I pay money for this garbage. I own the hardware. Let me do what i want with it.
At least it runs kernel 5.10 now and is super fast :) Worth the trouble honestly
(Should be noted im not new to flashing firmware on routers. But this is the first one that really didnt want me to flash it. Like nuking my freaking UART access ? Taking it too fucking far)7
I often hear
You will be promoted as lead if you act like it or take charge
That is really stupid, there is difference between responsibly and effort.
Why would i put effort for things that i am not getting paid for ?
Not really a dev habit, but a habit many devs have.
My beyond fucked up sleep schedule.
I've woken up at 8 and went to sleep at 12 for two days, and I'm beyond happy with the purely accidental progress I've made, really hope to not fuck it up this time like always.3
Weirdest co-worker... We'll not to be judgy, but I think our industry is sort of home of the weirdos, but.. there's a few over-the-top weirdees we've had at work.
First one that comes to mind was a guy that walked liked Mr. Burns, hands behind the back & chest out. He microwaved the same thing every single day for breakfast - crackers, sausage and cheese. 😖This guy would get to his tasks very slowly, wouldn't talk to anyone on our team, and would go missing from his desk a lot, sometimes for extended periods (2+ hours). He really struggled to catch on to easy tasks. He quit after a few months, thank god.
Another weirdo we had was a girl who just couldn't dress to save her soul. She would wear these ugly ass sneakers that had neon colors reminiscent of bowling shoes (neon orange and green) and would wear turtlenecks and floor length skirts that all the colors just clashed. Her outfits were uglier than your great grandma's. Myself, her and 2 other girls dressed up as the Dr. Seuss things for Halloween, but did h1, h2, etc. tags instead and she put like rope from curtains in her hair with like 10 little pony tails. Just like wtf. She would play her gameboy at lunch and not talk to anyone much. She was really bad at our job, a lot of clients complained. She would literally read a book, braid her bangs or nap at her desk. Needless to say, she was fired.6
Hey. I have some steam keys I don't want, and I don't really have any friends to give them away to, so. Here you go!
I'll post them in the comments below.
Only redeem them if you actually want the game, and if you've used one please comment or upvote to let others know! Be kind, don't be greedy, honor system, etc. etc.27
Manager: we should arrange regular catchups, I have several Monday morning, how about 10:30, that'd be 9:30 your time?
Me inside: dude, we both know I struggle to be up in time for the scrum at 10, do you really think I'm going to be any better at 9:30?
Me outside: How about 10:30 after scrum?
Manager: OK, that works, I have half an hour between meetings
Me: Thank fuck.4
Some time 199x, when I was still a little kiddo, my dad bought a PC. It had a big ass HDD (dimensions-wise), 1x 3.5" floppy disk drive and a 5.25" floppy disk drive. It ran DOS. Dad managed to hook up a dot matrix Epson printer to it and used the computer for writing... whatever, really :)
Then dad got some of those 5" floppies with games and installed them on our PC. Mach3, Indy, Entity and Atlantis were my favourite ones. Later we got Wolfenstein 3-D, but that was just too scary, too intense for me.
All that was years before we got Windows 3.0 installed there.
my boss praised me again, for just routine stuff, doing my job. I'm not even doing it too well. he said "oh but it's not about that, it's just that you're doing it". oh. honey... that's a really sad thing to say 😂4
The WP Gutenberg editor is really amazing. Clients can now fuck up their websites with much less effort. So yeah, IT IS FASTER.9
Dear Atlassian Support,
In my life I had a lot of experiences...
But your software manages to replace all these experiences with a unique feeling of depression, hatred, anger... Only negative emotions.
Not once have I said anything good about your software - not once in > 5 years.
Whenever your chum bucket of mismanagement and misanthropy stops working, it's never the fault of the end user, the administrator or someone else.
It's entirely your fault.
Fucked up upgrades, lack of documentation, catastrophic handling of logging, lack of support of current database systems, lack of proper migration and clean up of plugins, ....
I could go on. But it's really just and endless tirade.
I wish I could stop management for even giving you money for the pile of poo you call software, but sadly they don't listen.
But there's hope on the horizon.
Thanks for making people go cloud only.
No one wants that.
It would mean entrusting that pile of poo to the craptastic hands of your irresponsible people.
No one really wants that.
Not even management who blindly paid the license fees all the times.
Thank you for your cloud only movement.
Maybe we can finally find an alternative and I can finally start a therapy for the PTSD I have thx to your software.3
The 8 year old is learning Python, and after a dealing with a syntax bug she asks: "If the computer knows I'm missing a semicolon here, why won't it add it itself?"
I don't know. I really don't know.34
That log4j RCE is some fucking nasty business!!! Its exploits have already been observed multiple times in our company scope.
Time for some unplanned Saturday evening hot-patches :/
P.S. Why the fuck leave such a feature enabled as default??? I mean really, whose brilliant idea was "let's leave the message parser enabled as well as the LDAP query hooks... BY FUCKING DEFAULT!!!"
I mean really, is anyone using that? ANYONE?
And then they laugh at me when I say "stay away from frameworks", "use as little libraries as possible", "avoid foreign code in your codebase",...
you know what.... JOKE'S ON YOU!10
My wife is really mad at the fact that I have no sense of direction.
So I packed up my stuff and right.2
Because DevOps in a lot of organizations is really “help desk for clueless developers”, conversations like this happen a lot:
Dev “hey the thing seems to be not working right”
Me “what does that even mean? I need you to be a good deal more specific. What thing. What isn’t working?”
Dev “I dunno”
Me “Are there error messages?”
Me “….would you like to share them with me?”
Dev *sends error*
Me “ok did you actually read this error message?”
Me “…so you’re good then? It says you’re trying to use a variable that hasn’t been declared yet. You should fix that. “
Me “good luck”14
Hello there! I’m back from the /dev/null to rant about how my teacher marked the “the new C# syntax” as a mistake.
I’m really sorry, but this “new feature” is a thing since 2015 - back then, iPhone 6s got released, Barack Obama was still the US president and the only Corona people cared about was the beer.8
I'm convinced that playing the piano has allowed me to type faster and commit keyboard shortcuts to muscle memory faster too. While coding isn't about typing quickly, there's a whole bunch of times when I've had an idea, and had to get that down into code as quickly as possible before I forget it - and that's when I really find fast keyboard work comes into its own.5
I've been working with some new programmers now, trying to make this a place where people actually like working at. In my experience, most workplaces are bottom of the barrel shit, so I really wanted to try and make this the opposite, at least for the engineering team. When I hear them say how much they like working here, and how jealous their friends or family are at how much they are enjoying themselves and chilling with their coworkers and even their boss, it makes me feel so nice.
It might be a tiny company, but spreading happiness is great.1
Sometimes I wish I was driven by positive reasons, and not by self-loathing and sense of worthlessness. I didn't have an actual vacation for over 3 years.
I am now in Thailand with my parents, and I am working my ass off to meet IROS/RAL deadline instead of chilling. The urge to continue working is really compulsive. I am very tired.
On a brighter note, the early experiments I ran look promising9
Wanna know why Windows sucks so much? It's because of the Windows users. No, really!
Windows user: But but but I can't switch away from Windows because MIMIMI!
Microsoft: Ah, is that so? Then why should we even try to make (and pay for) an effort?5
I found this old printout of my username and password for my school account from ca 2008. I really like how the password are the same as the username except for some capitalization 😂😅
WTF is an agilist? Am I a codist now? This crap is getting out of hand. I’m really starting to dislike this industry- it’s the same thing we’ve been doing for years people, you’re just putting fancy names and certifications on top of it now.14
I have been on Reddit...
I have been lurking in ProgrammerHumor...
I am not proud of these things...
I got called a "Big Shot" because I didn't think the concept of pointers in C/C++ was ever particularly hard.
If I remember right. I learned in high school how pointers worked when they explained how arrays worked in Pascal. When I taught myself C it didn't ever seem like it was a difficult thing to understand.
Is the concept of pointers really that hard to understand for devs?17
At a previous company we hired an 18 year old guy and father from a minority and without a high school degree. He could write enough code to get the job. However, he took 3h long lunches, came in late to work and apparently had a problem taking orders from women. At one point all the juniors got an earful because of his attitude and he got let go, not long after. It still saddens me because he could have made a really good career if wasn't for his attitude.1
I really despise the non-tech sluts who think their only job is to hold meetings and "talk". "Do you wannaa taalk about iiit?" Fuck you bitch you're not my therapist.2
Our team really needs some workflow arrangement, and this time it was me who screwed up.
So we have to push an update to the Play Store and the App Store the Friday, the app is well tested on test environment then production environment, we got the ok so I uploaded a build, the app management team then continued the process of publishing..
During the weekend the app was approved and live to almost 500k user that can receive the update.
I got a phone call from the Project Manager at almost midnight, the time was really suspicious so I answered.
- Me: Hello.
- PM: Hi, sorry to call you now but the app is live and we have a problem.
- Me: what kind of problem? Let me check.
So I updated the app on my phone and opened it while I am on call.. I almost had heart attack!! WE PUBLISHED A VERSION POINTING TO THE TEST ENVIRONMENT. Holly shit
- Me: shit call the app management team NOW.
Eventually we removed the app from sale (unpublished it) and we submitted a new version immediately, once it was approved the next day we made the app available again (so for those who didn’t update yet, there will be no update to a faulted version, and no new users landing to a version with test data), I received one or two calls from friends telling me why the app is not on the store (our app is used nationally, so it’s really important).
Thank God there was no big show on twitter or other social media.. but it’s really a good lesson to learn.
I understand this is totally my fault, thankfully I didn’t get fired 😅4
Short one, but it really gets me every time:
PLEASE tell me that I am not the only one typing hex-numbers in all caps!!!
I literally can't stand to see them in lowercase!!!
Every code I use with hex numbers in it (primarily ASM and C) I HAVE TO convert them into uppercase!!!
Is it just me and my stupid OCD or are there other ones like me????11
boss: “I’m conceiving a new policy for engineering. What do you think about these changes?”
me: “Looks good”
boss: “You hardly looked at it”
me: *looks for one second longer than I did last time* “Looks good”
boss: “Do you actually care about this?”
me: “Am I going to have to enforce this policy or interact with any aspect of what happens when it becomes official?”
me: “Honestlly, man….I really don’t”.
boss: :( “Ok”.
"not sure if we can meet those salary requirements, but I'll get back to you"
JK they just send me the code challenge, no idea of what salary to expect. scratch that one off the list.
meanwhile in another prospect i have had not just multiple interviews, but then add on two additional 'prep' and 'post' interviews for each of the ORIGINAL interviews i have to do with the recruiting company REEEEEEEEEEEEE
honestly it's not a good reflection of what is really valued at these companies - paper pushing over getting to work... ok
WEVE ALREADY TALKED FOR HOURS JUST MAKE A DESICION: GIVE ME AND OFFER, OR DON'T AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA2
Bring the fun and curiosity back.
School education? Mostly rinse and repeat, learn from heart and do as you are told.
First job? Take these bread crumbs, shit out gold ingots, please.
There are few who had either very kind and gifted teachers / persons in their life or had a strong will / desire to learn by / for themselves - but it's hard to combine fun and curiosity with the - most of the time - very harsh reality and environment we live in.
I'd really wish that it would get back to fun and curiosity and not the endless myriad of bitching, hissing and fighting it usually is.
What I find most tiresome in education is the overflow of information with no value - most content is outdated, wrong, harmful, not precise and especially not helpful.
Thinking about good education I've got very fond memories of hanging out in IRC chats, talking with people who were "ancient" (la me 15-20, them 40 plus ;) ) and not being "shood" away, but rather getting fed by book recommendations, hints, appointments when they had more spare time to explain in private IRC sessions etc.
The atmosphere was always a "we might not have time for it, but we'll try and don't worry if you don't understand it".
When I'm trying to find information today... It's really 90 - 95 % filtering, 4 % try and error, 1 % finding what I need.3
Am I the only one who found Satya Nadella picture really out of context and funny.. its like the numbers represent real estate value of his heads surface....10
I don't really "keep" myself motivated. I wake up with certain amount of motivation every day and then I slowly die inside through out the day, every day.2
Been programming for 3 years now, self-taught but decided couldn't find any job and decided to enroll in college. The teachers are the worst, if I listen to them word for word I get confused about concepts I already know, they're classes are really slow and the teacher focus on a handful of student who slow down the whole class and I'm afraid by the end of the semester they will be rushing.7
My Daily WFH Routine :
Pretend that you are struggling really hard to solve some issues and it would be done by EOD.
Complete the task before lunch and the rest of the day is all mine :)4
I need to invent time travel so I can go back to Friday morning and slap my past self for thinking that Linux From Scratch might be a fun weekend project. I should've gone to bed four hours ago and instead I've been shouting at LLVM.
It really makes me appreciate the hard work that Linux distro maintainers put in to keep all the pieces up-to-date and compatible with each other. I already want to put my fist through my monitor and I'm only trying to maintain a single virtual machine.12
I recently got into an interview where the interviewer made a huge mistake:
R: “what’s your resignation period?”
Me: “well, long story short I’m working on a contract so it’s actually short, just 1 month”
R: “mhhh could you make it 2 weeks somehow? We may really need to start sooner”
This is a sentence you shouldn’t say as a recruiter as now I know:
- You are desperate to find someone
- You have a time urgency
- You failed to find someone before
- You basically confirmed you want me in9
i was helping a friend who just started learning how to code and i realized that tutorials don't teach you how to read error messages and how to debug. that's stuff we learn from people, it's tacit knowledge. that's crazy to me, because those are such essential skills to a dev and i think just self learning is not enough. maybe coding is even more of a socially dependent skill than i ever thought. looking at it that way, stackoverflow is a good example of that, I can't really imagine being a dev without the dev community7
@dfox can y’all add a beard/mustache combo to the avatar in which mustache hasn’t connected to the beard yet.
Some of us have really shitty genes XD2
If a tree falls over in the woods..
And important dev work gets done and shipped,
And it's not in JIRA.. did it even really happen..5
A becomes B
B becomes C
C becomes A
D becomes B
E becomes A
Now add real hostnames... Make this list longer (roughly 15-18)
Add resource calculation, migration of VMs, organizing new hardware, removing and rebuilding hosts, etc.
I think my brain is permanently damaged and cannot be repaired.
Hardware migration finally over tomorrow.
I really won't miss the fuckton of Excel lists, constant speaking mistakes, having sore fingers from mutilating the desk calculator etc.
I'm too tired to be happy. But... It's over.1
Clients that ask you to build X and then when you ask about said details to know everything up front, you get a deer in the headlights look.
I get it, not knowing right away is fine, but 5-6 months later and still "not knowing", being absolutely lazy with no responses to questions or just dumping the work to me to figure out from whatever source material you got it from and force me to crunch to save your ass isn't fun for me and I really don't give a shit about how much praise you give me publicly for the job I did.1
I really like Docker. I think that’s the best thing that happened in the dev field for years. Easy shipping and installation of software without messing up dependencies to other software.16
!rant, but kinda
My new director wants to buy a solution for a portal environment that my institution currently has. I have no qualms over it. My only issue was the company that sells it to be known to provide close to 0 fucking support when shit arises.
During a presentation we were told that they were using state of the art JAVA technology to render items on the page and that their ApI was easy for devs to grasp. This caught my attention since I know of very few and obscure Java frameworks that work with frontend tech (as in, your frontend logic is legit in Java)
I do not like to be questioned. I shoot the shit here and don't really involve myself with more technical aspects under this platform unless it involves concrete architecture discussions and even there I really don't care with engaging on a forum concerning that. But concerning my job I really.......really do not like to be questioned by people that know way the fuck less than me. I started coding when I was 17, I am 30 now, with a degree and years of experience. I really hate to be questioned by this dude.3
What does PFA MOM stand for?
We're an international company, we all use English while working. That's all fine and good.
But there's one project manager that throws in really obscure acronyms that even I, a native English speaker, struggle with.
It's "please find attached minutes of meeting". Is it really that hard to type?16
So a few weeks ago, our PO really scolded my team for not letting him in on our release planning meeting. His rant went on for about 30 minutes, just one long monologue about why he should be invited in the future.
Apparently he wanted to know details since there were some important fixes in the release, which I suppose is fair (though the rant is really not necessary).
Fastforward 2 weeks, we invite him again. He accepts, but never shows up. We decide to start the planning anyway, since we don't want the release branch blocked because someone didn't show up.
Immediately after the meeting, we write him with the new release plan. And he starts ranting again about "planning without him" -.- ..
1) Stop yelling at the team you're supposed to work with. Talk with the team about it - I'm sure they'll listen.
2) If you demand being in meetings, show up - or at least decline in advance.
3) You have no right to rant about "not being part of the planning" when you were literally invited for a planning meeting 2 weeks in advance. No meetings were overlapping, so there's literally no excuse..1
Music. Music teaches you numbers, creativity, patterns, structure, and basically primes your brain for math and creativity in that space. In addition, it teaches you how to think both within a structure and outside the box, as well as the importance of repetition, memorization, and learning a new language.
Music really was my second language, and the ability to read/write it fluently is a skill that takes a long time to master. I really believe that it increases your brain plasticity so much.4
"Did you see, cryptocurrency XYZ has N commits in the past week, but the price hasn't gone up?!?! WhAtS gOiNg oN!?!?"
Dude. If I could just write code to make the price of things in the real world go up, I can assure you, I would have done it.
That's not how this works. THAT'S NOT HOW ANY OF THIS WORKS REEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
God... normie "crypto experts" who haven't coded a day in their life really piss me off, and are super cringe. The funniest is that none of them or their followers realize it.2
Company Motto: “Business is simple, hire amazing people and let then do their thing”
Company Culture: You can’t do that!! It’s really hard and expensive to hire people with those skills! How would we replace you or save money by continuing to not give you a raise if you did that!?1
I am a weird dev. No urge to rant really, mostly internal frustrations if any.
Today I had my first meeting with the client and it went smoothly - I showcased demo in the current state, they approved, asked a bit more about the technology and that's pretty much it...
I know, I know... I'm just starting and it's gonna change but, idk why, I think I'm in a good work environment.1
Everyone in the gaming internet talking about how Microsoft's Activision Blizzard purchase will usher in a new age of improvements have never had to use teams.19
It really sucks when you join a company, you are really excited and then you see that the management and the work culture in the company sucks and you cant wait to leave...such a waste of time and energy :'(11
*sighs heavily, utters a few profanities, starts updating resume*
This one is on me. I thought I had vetted this place well and asked the right probing questions during the interview, the core product is very cool but the company is too functionally immature.
it feels like Im in a relationship with someone who is really nice, very attractive and clearly very book-smart but has absolutely zero emotional intelligence and even less of a clue in general about what they actually want and need from the relationship. And to that I say:
To be honest, I'm not as excited as I was 6-7 years ago when our tech industry seen a big leap, where these ML/Deep Learning algorithms were out performing humans, Apache Spark out perfomed Hadoop in distributed computing, Docker/Kubernetes are the new phenomenon in software development and delivery, Microservices architecture, ReactJS virtual DOM concepts were so cool.
Really though, I've come realise that these software trends come and go. All you need to do is adapt and go with the flow.3
Before becoming a developer I used to work in IT, and I really liked the fact that I can solve so many computer problems and the troubleshooting part.
Now I just feel very stupid when something is not working the way it's supposed to do.3
DNS is everywhere.
I hate DNS.
I hate DNS migrations.
I hate having a hundred plus DNS names inside my brain.
I hate resolving issues.
I hate DNSSEC.
I hate CNAMES.
I hate services which cannot be persuaded to stop trying AAAA resolves first.
I hate the fucking stupid braindead idea to use TXT as a configuration store inside DNS... And thus the necessity to blow up DNS query size aka EDNS.
I really really really really really want to burn this whole mfucking shit down...6
I really think 1 hr+ meetings are a fucking waste of time. By minute 40, people's attentions waver.
If I ever run my own shop I will fucking ban meetings that last more than 30 minutes, and have a hard cap of 7 people per meeting and require a fucking agenda. God damn it. Being stuck in meetings where 90% of crap not relevant to me is bs.
I have already done like 3 internships of 6 months now. And all the companies sucked!
Now the current company I work at is at least not a marketing company filled with cocaïne sniffing callcenter junkies. But why do they always lie so much. They promised free food and drinks and code reviews. What I get is a computer with an i5 and a fucking Jira account.
This is fucking annoying me, im hungry, thirsty and somebody should really check the code im about to push because it cant be good!!!3
Managers don't understand that there will ALWAYS be bugs shipped to production, no matter how hard you try to prevent or test against them.
inb4 any comments really, i've seen facebook, instagram, and all the 'big players' crash and have bugs multiple times before, so don't go around swinging your dick like your company's software has no known bugs (don't even get me started on the devrant mobile app) I'm just saying bugs are a fact of software8
However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...
Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5
Well fuck you Epic Games and Deep Silver!
I was really interested in getting Metro Exodus, but I'm not gonna install that shitty Epic Store!
Not bad vs 2022. Not bad !
I wanted to write that (really, not a joke).
Sometimes, auto complete just works.
We receive an email from Splunk when errors go above a certain threshold, and a particular service has been especially problematic this week (throwing hundreds of exceptions). Email response from the team mgr responsible for the service.
"We are working to address these errors. We don’t currently have a way to prevent a user who’s account is locked from logging into the service and performing work."
The exception? NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
The code? (paraphrasing)
var user = GetUser(request.Login);
if (user.CanPerformWork) ...
I'm doing my best not to reply .."Really? No way? You do realize we can read code, right?"3
I might sound like one of those wierdos that are overly into Japan, Martial Arts and such, but I really enjoy Judo.
It is a sport where you have to FEEL the contact with your opponent.
Practising Judo made my day-to-day stress go away in just about 20m and also kept me in good shape, made me meet a lot of people/friends, lead me to live in a certain way and interact with people in a certain way (a good way, actually).
It also taught me which parts of the body are the most dangerous/fragile and cause the most pain.7
Somehow I enjoy creating flawlessly working nifty utilities a lot more than writing actual business code.
It's that versatility and reusability of a well-written utility that makes it suitable for many use-cases that puts a smile on my face.
A single-purpose business and use-case-specific piece of code doesn't do it for me anymore. I guess it never did, really...
I wish I could get paid for building tools rather than business apps :)3
!dev Job hunting is so exhausting. Nowadays it's not enough to have two degrees and some certificates. No, you have to 'prove' your worth by also showing really complex, enterprise-level projects you made on GitHub. Yes, why don't you make it more difficult to find a job. lol4
Any senior types out there find that you’re losing your coding “chops”? I’m involved in so many OS/Middleware upgrades, infrastructure upgrades, status meetings that I can’t code to save my life anymore. I can review and guide design, but I struggle to generate new code. I can get a new dev going really quickly though - is this just a natural progression or is it game over for me? I feel like if I had to get another job, I’d be very unsuccessful. They call me a leader, but I think I’m just a slave.7
...i realized i can actually pattern-match like this (as in, sequence of elements (including "whatever") instead of just head::rest in F#...
...from watching a talk about prolog.
like "wait... prolog can do this when pattern-matching? that seems very useful. i think i tried to do that in F# but it didn't work, which seems stupid... I'm gonna go try it again".
and sure enough =D
i think i really am gonna like F# if i find the time and resolve to break through how its different mode of thinking stretches my brain in ways it hasn't been stretched for a long time =D6
I'd say it was when I did a Codereview and the dev said that he doesn't really know how the code works and he doesn't quite know what it's purpose is supposed to be.
We are talking about less then 200 lines, all written by himself, this is not copied code.1
Just compleeeetteellyy messed up a technical interview.. stupid theory.. I can apply all that stuff but when I get asked to explain then . Well.. I messed up.
And the coding part, I had the right approach but had one big brainfart in it making the whole thing useless (pseudo code so couldnt test it). I realized just after the interview was finished..
I hate the feeling of failure.
Was a really nice position which is why I applied. Ah well, tonight is whiskey night I guess.9
i have been applying for jobs recently, and after getting some HR interviews that evolved to tech interviews, i just cancelled them all...
Every company seems to have hacker rank, and online coding sessions as tech interview stages which really stress me out. Its like everyone thinks they are google and its ok to make people go theough this pressure to join them.
I dont mind being given 10 days to implement a complex project, after which im either in or not. But 20 mins to solve something online while either the interviewer is watching me or the automated test is waiting to filter my application out... i get anxiety just thinking about that..
so im gonna stick with my current job for now, and focus on building my own business slowly on the side. I really felt anxious because of those tech interviews these past weeks and i feel so much better after cancelling all of them.
if a decent company comes along with the project approach, id love to apply, but otherwise ill just stick to where I am for now. dont know if im being immature or irresponsible career wise or if this decision will blow up in my face
stay tune to find out !15
Not really trying to, but probably should try to fix this bad, bad habit…
I keep wanting to fix and improve everything - and I keep taking notes, writing action plans et fucking cetera to the point the amount of work that should be done and I want to do is driving me insane. And they should all get done now!
In short, I should really either learn to focus on just one thing at a time for a meaningful period - or just cease to give a fuck. Either could work.3
i was having a really hard time because there was no record of changes in code, the boys would communicate changes in private and I'd spend hours trying to figure out why i couldn't compile. when i asked my boss that they put that info somewhere, he said it was unnecessary and that it always worked that way before i came. ofc it worked, it was 2 guys coding. i couldn't work properly and everything took forever to sort, no one tried to help. i went to hr and they just told me i was right and that i had to be patient. i quit soon after1
Really want to go back to the office, have coffee breaks with my colleagues, go on lunches and complain about having to come to the office everyday!!!!!!!!!!!1
Design is done by the ios guy. Its really good, but its very ios specific. The biggest pain is to implement blur everywhere. Also he does it directly in in xcode, so when i finally get it hes already done and android is always lagging behind. Management is aware of this and is ok with android lagging behind, but its annoying.2
The Project Management Triangle "fast-cheap-good (pick two, you can't have all three)" is something I've never agreed with.
How would you promise to build something good & cheap?
Doing it slowly will not really make it cheaper. The cost is usually development hours. If it takes 40 hours to make a good product - doing it 2 hours per day isn't going to make it cheaper.12
Of course, the variable for fields should be called "flds", those 2 bytes saved will help us so much! For a small price of this shit being not really readable anymore. Is it "floods"? "fleeds"?8
DevRant hiding my old rants really rustles my jimmies.
It took me many years to distill all of this pure, unadulterated rage... why would you conceal such a treasure from me?5
Chrome dark mode in a nutshell. After a certain update a couple of months ago, it apprently turns some pictures with darker colors in them, white. And other darker colors like dark red to a very light red.
Exapmle of chrome dark mode ruining the profile pictures of devRant.
In theory i could see its smart to also have dark mode and reverse on images, so images isnt getting fucked up.
But in practices it just seems dumb, mostly so many images like logos etc are ending up looking so weird / ugly and it only seems to do it on smaller images anyway.
Not really a rant, just something i found stupid.3
Im thinking about leaving my employer because I keep getting way too much work on my plate, people get annoyed that its not done in time and tell me that i should tell them if im getting too much work.
So i tell them its to much and our deadlines are to tight, then i just get told "this is how we always work, we just gotta finish things faster and better"...
Another one is that our HR/office manager keeps bugging me about setting up SMART goals so i can prove my value to the company and that its my responsibility to do so if i want a pay raise (even if im already underpaid)...
Im sorry but if you wanna keep me, you gotta give me some damn incentive to stay...
Ive been putting up with it sofar because i like the office and the people and the majority of the work itself and i really dont wanna go looking for another job because im really bad at it... but wtf... im so done with all the "how does this work" questions too...
tl;dr: getting negative reviews because im bad at my own evaluation is gonna make me quit probably, while im being praised for all other work i do4
Some days I'm really not sure if I'm a developer or everybody's general problem solver because I'm an engineer and can think critically about your site configuration THAT YOU SHOULD BE ADMINISTERING YOURSELF!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
"Doesn't work, must be the dev."
Wrong. You misconfigured something and fucked it up. Figure it out yourself - actually read the error message right in front of your face - and don't waste my time.5
Vendor lock-in for cloud providers is really small, and you don't notice it until you need it. Route53 has an "import zone file" button, but they don't have an "export zone file" button. Yes, there are other tools and scripts to do it, but bit-by-bit AWS, GCP, and Azure make it difficult to leave.2
i dont know sql, gotta look shit up and dont much of it really internalized
i may be now being assigned somebody else's task to do some sql shit
fucking kill me4
I mean i like working with it because you can build a lot of creative and cool stuff with it, but i find the language itself to be hacky, wierd and too complex.17
Would you like to talk about our god and saviour TDD?
P.S. I like test driven development very much. It makes complex stuff really easy.4
~Of open worlds and post apocalypses~
"Like dude. What if we made an open world game with a map the size of the united states?"
"But really, what if we put the bong down for a minute, and like actually did it?"
"With spiky armor and factions and cats?"
"Why not though?"
"Cuz dude, people ate them all."
We have a new team member in our team. So I was giving her one to one KT. After KT
She: so are there new changes coming soon?
Me: Yes there will. Now you here I could really use a hand.
She: that's what he said3
I have a random question:
What values do you guys live with?
And how can I make sure I live my life with highest possible values?
The squad here is most raw and honest. I have seen you folks stick to what you believe in and stand up against the evil even if costs you or makes you sacrifice somethings.
Really want to be a better human and seems like my next phase of life would be dedicated to this.21
I'd like to ask: What's trending at the moment instead....
Either I'm old and senile and missing something, or there is not really sth new.
Okay, JS might be crapping out new frameworks in their common "Not invented here" diarrhea....
But otherwise? What's really new?
I don't really know. I'm not only thinking about languages and stuff, but even in hardware there ain't really a big thing going on in my opinion.
Hab ich wat verpennt?
(Have I overslept?)
We had an interesting and frightening discussion regarding NGINX, as it is russian software today and that a new trend of a true, actively developed webserver is severely lacking... Apache looks semi dead and most other niche webservers, too.
That's all I've seen as a "trend" discussion in the latest time4
These days I'm listening to french music so much.
Even when coding. Trust me I am loving it and productivity really increased.6
I have a complex about my nose. I was about to bite the fucking bullet and do something about it. Literally just waiting for the procedure room to be ready, when I kept asking myself wtf I was doing. Then looked at my nose again and realized that it really wasn't that big a deal. Not when compared to dealing with internal bleeding and pain for weeks, plus a painful procedure.
Even after all these years, all these accomplishments, all this experience, I'm still a dumb fuck.
Now then, I'll go put some of the money I didn't waste to good use. Like videogames, hookers, and blow. Probably just the former.5
I dont understand why we must use PHP to
Im a student software developer and this is the first time i will learn about Object Oriented programming but i dont know man im really confused why our prof makes us use PHP to understand the concept of OOP rather than to learn Python or Java which is ten times easier for an OOP based application
I can understand that PHP can be used for OOP but why just why... can someone please explain why this might be and how does it feel to use PHP for OOP purpouses10
No rant today. I'm actually really happy where I am. There are things that can be improved from a stack perspective, but I'm happy to have a good supervisor who's supportive of my training.2
"Pay more attention to the house"
I'm working here!
Why every non tech person acts like I'm doing no fucking shit all day?
These types of things makes me want open my own fucking office.5
Did this question really deserve a down vote?
Stackexchange community is so annoying at times. It's just that a few handful of experts are helpful.
But again my recent questions on stackoverflow were answered by myself only after a week or so 😐9
Confession: I don't feel like working. At all. I'm so in need of a vacation. I spend 3/5 days gaming at home and do my sprint assignments in the last two, because I'm so fucking good at what I do. Been working like this for weeks now.
Last summer vacation I really had was fucked up by a PO calling me about the project expectations wanting me to really explain the technical decisions to stakeholders, because the schedule kept getting shorter and that caused me huge amounts of anxiety. I left the company next year. They even contacted me later asking if I had any interest coming back. No fucking chance.
Didnt have any vacation days for last summer. Now I'm in a really nice position where I don't have to really give a shit about the project I'm working on so I can just ignore work completely during my vacation. Gonna delete my email from my phone and disconnect Slack. Fuck work.4
Does anyone else have a home screen widget that is their contact details as a QR code?
And has anyone found a not-shit android app that'll do it?
I CBA to make one but also it's really useful. I hacked it together with an app that'll scan a QR code and display it as a widget.7
!dev, just a rant
I got covid a couple of weeks before Christmas. Would have been considered a mild case as I didn’t need hospital treatment but felt really rough for about a week.
A month later I still have a cough, hardly any sense of taste or smell and exhaustion.
One day I think I’m fine and then I struggle with everything. It’s like having severe depression again.
I keep hearing about people having hardly any symptoms and being better in a couple of days. I am definitely envious of those people.
I implemented the equivalent of “?.” In typescript with a function callled safeRetrieve(descend into the field only if the object is not null).
We could not update typescript, so I just created this function and it made me used to use ‘keyof T’ as a parameter type… I still feel very satisfied after I use this approach with anything because it really feels like using typescript correctly!4
When I was in high school, I was learning to code on my own. I showed my python code that I was really proud of to the girl I liked. she didn't understand what it is, she thinks its weird, she thinks I'm weird.
She has a point.3
Recruiter bot just emailed me with some offers, let's take a look...
"Hand-on Experience with SQL and NO-SQL Databases preferably Redux"
Whew! I was worried for a second, thank god they are using a Redux database and not one of those really crappy React databases! I'll really consider applying now.
"Please help, when I login as a client somehow the name gets updated to my name. Pls help, ai really don't know why"
How about you be careful and don't hit save to overwrite their names
this topic always makes me think of "this is good code" http://stilldrinking.org/programmin...
had some really small assembly/shellcode type stuff ppl said was "impossible" that i pulled off, that was up there.
typically anything i can see the improvement, time or line count reduced. why is this taking a minute? boom now it's 15sec, gj
when there are reasonable comments and self commenting code. when there isn't trailing whitespace.
my "good code" - sapphire
Weekly Q: How do you keep yourself motivated?
A: No matter what - I allocate a little bit of time every week to something I really care about right now.
When I was green it was mostly learning. Now it's mostly codebase cleanup, dev experience improvement or dabbling with some feature that's not prio.
Might not sound like a lot but doing it weekly does add up.
Incredible that these companies with literally no product, and barely a website (if any) come around offering 100K+ jobs
They have funding out of their ass but literally NO real-world value... it's amazing to me.
Guess it really is not what you can do but who you know.1
In reality, I'm really frustrated with my life, sometimes I thought that dying is easier than living 🙂.7
Post rejection, I'm basically emailing my last supervisor, and I think... I think I'm forcing him to be my mentor... 🤔
Although forcing people into doing things is really not my style, but I'm kinda sorta out of will to live. 😐3
Come on devRant! I’m getting really annoyed when clicking on rant that has [read more] at the end since it is a gamble to kill this iOS app you have made. Every ~5th click I get app terminated. Then after I reenter the app, I lost where I was. Thats why I ++ all the rants I have read, even those who don’t deserve it :), so I can scroll quickly and see which are not ++’ed.3
On a lighter note:
Mom: How do I delete messages on my phone? I want to delete some pictures of coupons that I sent you.
Me: Why? Mom, that’s not really necessary. The messages aren’t taking up that much space on your phone. And those coupons have expired anyway.
Mom: But they’re old and I want to delete them.
Me: Ok. Get your phone.4
Me walking down the corridors of my building after hours, singing full on out loud (I can actually sing)
Lyrics(by yours truly homage to Mika)
I wanna talk to you!
The last time we talked, Mr. Smith, you reduced me to tears
I promise you it won't happen again!
Do I attract you? Do I repulse you with my queasy smile?
Am I too dirty? Am I too flirty? Do I like what you like?
I could be wholesome, I could be loathsome, I guess I'm a little bit shy
Why don't you like me? Why don't you like me without making me try?
Some voice at the other side of the building: "who is there singing???!"
"I tried to be like Grace Kelly!!"
"but all her looks are too sad"
"so I tried a little Freddy MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM"
"I've gone identity maaaaaaaaaaaad"
then I walked inside of my office and stopped spooking the janitors. Really wish someone would join in and helped me sing the high note parts of the song really. I've got no audience here smfh
There's something super broken about the interview process in our industry. I spent 30 minutes chatting with a hr recruiter. 2 hours on a coding screen. 1 hour for a technical interview. 1 hour talking with the head of engineering. But then they decided to pass on me. Well if things went well then, then I spend an entire fucking day on an onsite.
Wow. Since when did the industry get so bloated until we have to do so much to get a job? Is signal really that unclear so candidates have to jump through hoop after hoop?
My personal top 4:
time with gf,
time with friends,
Just clears my head, but doing any of my other hobbies can really help because it just gets me in a different headspace
Spent the day working on a concept for a Survival, Twin Stick Shooter, Tower Defence game. not sure if it will work yet, but everyone I have ran my Concept by really likes it.
Don't you hate it when you order something, its in the postal service, and then it never arrives..
Then you have to get a refund, and order it again, probably from somewhere else in case the first vendor really didn't put it in the post, and has a bad score..
Good thing I'm not dying of anything that I could do with the pills for . . .2
Shut down the bootcamps. The market is over saturated. Most are just showing YouTube videos anyways as a big chunk of the curriculum. They make people think anyone can code, but you really need ambition and an ability to accept failure when your code doesn’t work (not just memorization skills or a can-do attitude). Even though some states do have regulations, they rely on the public to report any illegal activity. That’s why a lot of scams persist. They’re also making the debt crisis worse with ISAs.10
my current boss i think. he's really good at office politics and he's very willing to help me navigate some tricky social interactions. he's also got very solid feedback1
Prototype no. 2 is looking really good (and also works so well to the point that the only thing that’s holding us back is supply chain)!
Also yes, that is a Touhou Youmu fumo (ᗜˬᗜ)6
In all countries except the USA, Chanel logo is just "Chanel, Paris". In the USA, it's fucking abomination "Chanel® inc. New-York, N.Y. 10019".
People from the USA, please tell me, is American bureaucracy really that bad?5
Is this really android 12? My phone is stuck at android 9, and I'm using simulator to test an app but wtf is this? its like the cheap copy of an iPhone settings :S
What is this even the stretching when we hit edge of scroll :S
This thing looks like when Windows Phone meets iOS9
Fucking mongo, fucking nested documents in nested documents that need to be filtered. I'm either really fucking dumb, the query is hard or both.8
So exams are coming up and I’m not even ready at all :,,) I Need and want to study But At the same time i want to draw and animate. When i think about these two stuff my brain becomes soggy and very slow so in the end I don’t do anything and it’s bad :,,) I really suck at planning stuff out, do you all have any good schedules that work? :DD3
I cycle between games I play. I am now back to Minecraft. Playing FTB OceanBlock. It is progression lite. Less of a grind with short and long term rewards. It is like a skyblock, but you can start on an actual island. I am really enjoying the mods FTB developed just for this modpack. The modpack has plenty of tech in it to satisfy my need to build something purely for fun.5
Hello, today was my First day, internship at Microsoft innovation center BE, a great day with amazing people, my project is called tech Office, we need to process data from sensors in the office, create and use Microsoft AI to optimize and help the office become smarter and more efficient. Make the life better and the environment more productive. I don't really know where to start but I'm happy to be given such an opportunity and will do everything to make this work !
Worst: Not landing a decent job
Best: dev-wise, none really.
It has been a rather shit year, really.15
I was on Instagram and I saw a boy advertising to sell 5k followers and I was wondering, how do they do that? Can they programmically create and control those accounts? I know they can use the Instagram API to some degree but I feel like Instagram probably has security set up to detect that type of stuff (5k accounts following someone at the same time, etc). Does anybody know? I’m actually really curious7
My last night :
- Had nothing much to work on
- Opened an anime site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good shows.
- Realized full screen isn't working on that page.
- Fired up JS Console , spent next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.8
I'm trying to get an internship.
My coding skills are great, but I get really nervous/scared when interviewed. Social skills are trash...8
My company really ain in the arse, communication is an issue here. The company have the elements of cronyism and nepotism in dealing with employees as everyone is judged based on who you know and how close you are to management vs pure merits of one's work.12
Hey guys, could I ask you to upvote my question on stackoverflow or take a look and help me solve this if you can, I'm stuck with this problem for one week : https://stackoverflow.com/questions...
I would really appreciate it9
Just interviewed with this company that I really love and wants to work in. And I think I did well in the interview. I hope they don’t send me a rejection email like the rest.2
I'm doing my Postgrad in I.T with a specialty in Application development. I've honestly lost interest in software development. I no longer have that *thing* I used to have, I've honestly completely lost interest. I decided to accept I really nice paying Technical Support Analyst position. It's very close to my house and I can work from home.4
To the reactjs-centered fucks who develop the popular web component viewing software called storybook: have you ever heard about semver?
89 alpha/beta/rc releases for a minor update 6.3 -> 6.4 with "100's of fixes and enhancements" "in preparation of the HUGE 7.0 release". Gee I wonder will it have 1000's of bugfixes? How bug-ridden is this software?
Every minor upgrade since 5.x is backwards-incompatible and requires a day of frustration finding out in how many more fucking NPM packages you split your codebase just because it's cool. I know move fast and break things, but some of us have other things to do than resolving node_modules incompatibilities you know. "No just hit 'npx sb upgrade' you say". I did, I really did! And the browser showed a blank screen of death with tons of cryptic React errors, it really did! Thank God you abstracted away all your dependencies in that sb command, now you can't even read the docs about what could have gone wrong with a specific sub-package. You have @storybook/html but the docs redirect to React pages, so good luck if you use something else
This is so sad... like.. the IDEA of storybook is great. But why did faith put the capacity to develop such a tool into the hands of people who think the world centers around React and JSX.. HTML should have been the default, and then you build on top of that for your fav framework, not the other way around
When you bust your ass developing a site for a client, bend over backwards with changes - pushing the rest of your extremely large queue further and further behind, just to come in to a cancellation request from someone else at said company. 😡 We had really good rapport and the site looked amazing, and all they give me is "we're going in another direction". 😡 Why do people so this when the site is already finished?!? So rude! Before you comment telling me to charge upfront next time or whatever I work for a huge company so none of that is in my control.
does my co-worker code is actually really necessary, for the sake of arguments lets ignore server performance, and focus on this snippet.
added comment on the side of the parameters12
switching from C# / managed C++ to pure C++ in the new project feels like being relocated to an outpost in the wild west.
now i have to think about so many things the C# compiler would just have cared for, and all this hassle before i can actually address the problems that i want to solve. already ran into some weird memory overflows. i'm actually happy to learn something new, but it still feels really inefficient.3
Want to ask on how you guys overcame your burnout from coding, i think its been so long since i really got into coding like i used to before.13
Anyone here have any experience with PHP? I've never really used it myself and don't really want to, but I do look at things like http://phpsadness.com/ from time to time.
These complaints range from "fairly minor" (some stuff like function names/args and some syntsx complaints) to "how is this language even used" (segfaults in a scripting language, broken things like "create_function", comparisons and ternanry operator).
Of course, i don't program in PHP so i don't know how bad any of this actually is.
Anyone actually use PHP or did use it previously?20
I've said this before, but i always get the spot I'm hoping for. there was one time i got rejected though.
i met a colleague during the interview process, and really thought he was getting that spot, he was much more qualified than the other participants. there was about another 4, out of which 3 still looked like good competition. the 4th one got there late, couldn't form a coherent sentence to save his life and had no job experience.
guess who they picked :v8
I really dislike micromanagement. I don't want to dictate details. I don't like hierarchies where my direct reports obey me.
The only thing that obeys me is my hands, with them, I write the exact code I want. I don't hire another pair of hands. I hire another brain.
When you see your direct reports as professionals, you can give declarative tasks: "make a pretty website footer", "make that page load quicker". If you leave implementation details for your direct reports to decide, this doesn't mean they'll fuck up. They are professionals too, and if you personally interviewed them, you better believe they can handle it.
I want a horror movie with some undergraduate IT student watching coding tutorials, ending up really liking videos of a specific youtube channel.
Then, the student send a message to that creator, and they start knowing each other. After a year, the channel author invites the student to come over.
That youtube channel is called Carl H.2
It sucks learning python after you have learned
C/C++ and have adequate knowledge in it🤧
Everything looks so basic and it doesn't really teach you to know much about how the computer internals work🤧It sucks and looks very boring.
I just feel like stopping it and Just concentrate on only C/C++.
C/C++ stretches your mental capability beyong just basic stuff 🤧12
How do you find open source projects you want to contribute to? I'm trying to find projects I'm interested in but don't really know what to do.7
I have a job with health insurance but I’m so stressed out that I overeat and so busy that I don’t have time for prolonged exercise to burn more calories. Ironic that I was healthier when I worked for a diet and exercise company 100% remote that didn’t have a health plan vs driving to work for one that does have a health plan. This feels really upside down.2
Nothing like a fucking kernel corruption after Ubuntu update and restart.
It's so great
My two hard drives now are encrypted and to unlock them the kernel should be intact.
The amount of time it'll take to reconfigure my machine to work is insane.
Also, I had commits in products I'm working that weren't on remote. So fuck me.
Now I have to do a fresh install and hope that I can read my second drive.17
Someone in the #us slack channel posted about how, if other Americas were dealing with roe v wade, they could come to the mental health channel.
I really want to respond about how Americans are a diverse group, and some are thankful for a judgement that preserves what some consider life, and to keep our diverse opinions in mind.
But I'm not going to. I'm not stupid. It's not worth starting a fight or potentially losing a job over. So I remain silent, like a coward.
I earn a lot of money, enough to ignore ideology I don't agree with, and messages that would have been considered totally inappropriate at one time.23
While the topic is a bit divisive, the statistical technique highlighted in this post is really cool:
Manager : You really shouldn't be doing that
Dev : Its in my job description
Manager : Yeah but you still shouldn't be doing it.
Dev : Who should I hand it off to?
Manager : We don't have anyone else to hand off that task to.
Dev : Ok , do I stop doing it?
Manager : 😡Of course not , it needs to get done! I'm just saying you shouldn't do it.
Dev : ????????3
Harari said of the idea of Data-ism:
In its extreme form, proponents of the Dataist worldview perceive the entire universe as a flow of data, see organisms as little more than biochemical algorithms and believe that humanity’s cosmic vocation is to create an all-encompassing data-processing system — and then merge into it.
We are already becoming tiny chips inside a giant system that nobody really understands. Every day I absorb countless data bits through emails, phone calls and articles; process the data; and transmit back new bits through more emails, phone calls and articles. I don’t really know where I fit into the great scheme of things, and how my bits of data connect with the bits produced by billions of other humans and computers. I don’t have time to find out, because I am too busy answering emails.
I was initially entertained by the punchline, but that was soon followed by the rather depressing realisation that my only value to greater society is essentially as a data processing unit8
I've really begun to resent working with an organization where everyone above the team has a complete industrial mindset. Everyone seems to look for someone to blame, covering their own asses, and that leads to gateways and checks to make sure the quality is good before showing anything to anyone. Typically the agile mindset accepts failure, learns from it and moves on, continuously improving. Blame should not be a part of it. Failure should be a lesson on how to improve. Damn some people are just dinosaurs.3
Well....this shit again
This morning or technical manager calls me in his office and says he needs to discus something
sits me down and started talking about a project he needs
A school management system says he presented some demos at the client yesterday but they didn't really like options at the table
Manager: So can you get us something really quick?
Me: Well... what's the time line?
Manager: They needed this like yesterday!
Me: Aaaah....well i think i can have something by 2moro morning
Manager: Aaah! No!.... 2moro it's too late need something like fast
Me: Ok so will look for some online solutions and open source projects
Opens browser, opens github, download project, runs project
project isnt looking good enough
starts designing UI
downloads a system
meet with a "Buy to continue using system" message
Manager: this was just a demo now it needs payment what should we do
Me: I'll come up with something by 2moro1
Last friday, I got a call from an inhouse recruiter that represents a company which makes applications for Koenigsegg (hyper car manufacturer) and it seems like a really cool job. A bit surprised that they called me actually.
I do love my current job though, what do I do?7
They bought and killed the awwapp.com
And now they demand I paid $200 for their crappy UX, for a battleship-level-software when all I really want is smth lightweight, simple and nimble, like draw.io.
I think I was never this satisfied pressing the "cancel subscription" button.
Fuck you, Miro!
Give us back the AWW!!!2
Posted in DevOps discussion board (teams channel):
“Program x isn’t behaving the same way that it does on production. Can you please take a look?”
..a little background: we have a deployment scheduled for today and this issue was found during regression testing.
The issue found is that when a file is clicked on it disappears from the screen, and then isn’t opened…
The file is not on prem, and doesn’t get uploaded to a server that our DevOps team owns…
So why on earth would this development team be asking DevOps to look into a bug that is most likely a code related issue? 😆
Is this a common occurrence for anyone else?
A Bug is found, and the first thought is that the code isn’t the issue?11
I don't know how any company can keep on top of crazy npm package changes. I work in a REALLY SMALL team. We are still using bunch of deprecated packages and we keep building on top of those packages. Updating packages is always a nightmare. It's impossible to Google solution when no one is using the particular combination of deprecated packages. Fuck me4
How do you guys deal with really stupid PMs? I had one ask me 3xs to call the client and send emails because he's lazy and doesn't know how to be a PM + he's dumber than a box of freaking rocks.5
Me to my peer: "Yo the code that they sent us works but it sucks and is insecure"
My peer: "Yo that sucks they should definitely change that, go submit a ticket so they change it up, that really sucks!"
Me: *prepares ticket, gets it checked by peer:

DevRant hiring managers - do projects actually matter? Have you really hired someone because of a cool project?9
I can't find a website I used years ago... maybe someone here remembers its name.
It was a place with daily code challenges, real time code battles, you had to fix bugs, syntax errors, you could choose different programming languages, and receive points based on the number of chars used to fix the issue, etc.
I hope it still exsits, it was really fun.
Thanks in advance!5
hi guys im new with app development and i have small question because this is really stressful for me,when you guys learn recycler view for the first time is that hard?or am i being stupid because its hard for me10
Since when is it possible for other (administrator?) users to edit my questions on StackOverflow? I just got alerted that someone removed a sentence from a post I made there. It's not terrible. I probably should have excluded that sentence myself. But that seems really heavy-handed.13
I have to make a change to one of our web apps today. I hate front end, the code for this is terrible, the fix is going to be horrible and hacky.
I really miss having some kind of motivation for this work, it would make life easier.
Instead it’s just one empty pointless day after another.
Even though my coding bootcamp was pretty shitty, I did make friends with the person seated next to me on the first day. We were assigned seats next to each other. We bonded over our thoughts of “we’re adults wtf is up with assigned seats” and “I would never sit at the back of the classroom.”
She really helped me out when I didn’t understand some things in class. I helped her with notes on days when she was absent.
Even though we don’t socialize much after bootcamp, I still consider her a great friend.1
One of my seniors is leaving the team. Honestly, I did not talk about personal stuff with him but during this lockdown, he was the only one whom I talked to this much. My most projects are with him, so in the team I kind of only know him. And now he is leaving, I feel so heavy.
I was anyway feeling no interest in my work, and now this, I really don't want to work at all. I don't want to be in this team, really without his guidance I can't do good. And this reminds me now I don't have anyone in the team to guide me. It's the same feeling as you get old and now no one to support you and you need to support yourself and slowly others. It's frightening.
On a good note, I hope things will turn out to be good for him, he's a nice person after all :) Everyone respected him, and he was trusted so much.2
Showing up to work every day after 25 years of this knowing that I really kind of suck at my job and feeling like I’ll never get to a point where I can say I’m fully caught up to the level of knowledge others I work with have or that I’m expected to have. I suppose this is a bad habit of attitude but it seems to be an actual reality for me with every passing day, week, month, and year. It’s all just too much and my brain just isn’t as agile as it once was (and it wasn’t all that agile to begin with).3
getting a scam message in the work phone saying it's from a rival company is really funny, might be the highlight of my week 😂4
Non tech hobby of mine: bird watching (you may have guessed based on my username). Although it’s a non tech hobby, there are so many great apps to help identify birds and learn about them. EBird, birdnet, Merlin, picture bird etc. I also have a few books about bird watching.
Crazy how many different kinds of birds you can see when you really start paying attention.5
We had an ADAM/Colecovision unit before this, but I don't really count it, as it was more of a console for us than a computer.
In 1986 dad brought home a Tandy 1000 SX. It had an Intel 8088 processor, 64k of memory, and no hard drive. With dual 5.25" floppy drives, our write-protected DOS 3.1 disk stayed in drive A almost all the time. Games and other software were run from drive B, or from the external cassette drive. For really big games, like Conquest of Camelot and Space Quest 3, we were frequently prompted to swap disks in B: before the game could continue.
Space Quest, King's Quest, Lords of Conquest, Conquest of Camelot, Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer, several editions of Carmen Sandiego, and at least a dozen other games dominated our gaming use. We wrote papers with WordStar, and my parents maintained their budget with Lotus 1-2-3.
A year or two later, Dad installed a 10 MB hard drive, and we started booting DOS off that instead. Heady days.1
Every problem I ever had with a game development engine, only made me hope for something better.
After all, we’re independent developers, not activision! What the hell is an “indie” anyway? I’d even grown a sort of disgust at the term, as if saying it, without having published anything, was being fake. The word felt vapid. Like calling yourself an e-celebrity, or apple putting an i in front of everything.
(Don’t you know its year 20xx, we attach coin to brands now! Dogecoin, ecoin, walmartcoin, hospitalCoin for when you really really just want an appendectomy).
This is my newsletter, Y Intercept, and the story of my many embarrassing failures, and what I have learned from them.

Stay tuned for more, like "how I once redesigned the same interface over two thousand times."
and gems like
"I wish it was more like Minecraft, But With Guns - and the awful ads that FLOODED the internet from that one little, terrible, god awful suggestion."3
How does on-call work for your company? Our product is mostly used in the US so any pages we get are mostly in the US time. Despite that, our team has US and EU folk and me (an EU folk) am expected to wake up middle of the night for any pages that occur. I consider this a really shit model not just for employees but for the business, but I wanted to know if this is common and I'm just not seeing the point of this.20
ive seen a few people bitching about the state of browsers lately
and i want an alternative, i really do
but all these webkit pos's have 1 major flaw - ad block is shit
dont even know if they work well because i can't (and won't) use the net with ads being shoved in my face and down my throat at a higher rate than what pornhub does with cock13
I really have to say i love and hate dev rant :( Why is the feed so so so so bad. I see almost the same posts everytime/day. Even when i refresh. And its not better when looking at today/week/month/alltime. Is the Devrant just not maintslned anymore or are there just soo few users.
On the other hand though i find it veey enterteining and relateable at times. Much better then some twitter/insta etc .. i hope devrant will get more love from the devs and more user :)4
So I deleted my last post looking for the next tech sale date as wanted a wireless charger because I found a deal...
It was like 60% off... But after I got buy instead regret...
The sites reviews are crap, it's a reseller apparently and no actual brand is listed...
And then I realized what I really wanted was a fast USB charger that takes a regular USB input instead of Google's choice of a microusb one ....
Another $20 down the drain... It seems the return policy is crap or non-existent...
It's been a while since I ranted but goddamn people really need to work on fucking communication. Jesus Christ. Make it to the point and think about your listener's POV. God fucking damn it fuckity fuck I am so goddamn tired. 90%of the shit that comes out of their mouths have no point wasting my fucking time. What is the objective of what you're saying?
It's time for me to BOUNCEEE.
Just read a really neat breakdown of approaches for auto-suggestion, covering n-grams, tries, and more, by a guy working at Etsy.
This is what I do with my days off apparently.
If you want to read it you can find it here:
We checked a rather important part in our communication services because it was throwing errors from time to time.
Asked our former technical project lead if he could help us since he developed it.
"I don't really know why it's doing that, I got it from a online example so I know as much as you do"
Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit, it seems I can be a senior developer too!2
For the first time I work for an old and absolutely massive company. I have never seen systems so byzantine and so outdated ever before. With how the project management on top of it all has been going so far I'm really impressed that anything gets done at all.2
Learning rust or go. Not sure which one yet, but I'm really interested in giving both a shot at some point. I just need to decide which one first, and build something nice with it.
Will probably go for another AWS certificate too, probable Architect associate.4
Most had no idea what the web really was “under the hood” back then, so it was mostly indifference. But entry level salaries were awesome then, so also happiness and congrats from them for the folks I told how much I was making.
Frontend engineers are like strikers - you see their work, good and bad, and you don’t notice how many contribute to their success. Backend engineers are like goalies - you only really notice when they do a _bad_ job and don’t see how many things contribute to their failure.6
Me [posts in community forum for software vendor]: Where can I find docs on X? I tried looking in the Knowledge Center but I couldn’t find it.
Random person replies and writes a two paragraph response about opening a support ticket with the software vendor…that response could really have been reduced to two sentences 😑1
Need some advice. I’m a uni student and I really want to go into machine learning, data science, or computer vision. I have most of the skills and I feel I am fairly competent. However, the only professional experiences I have are web dev based. How can I make myself more appealing for data based roles? I really don’t want to do web dev anymore hahahahah5
Someone in my mind, I see programmers who use Windows as “unserious” and “don’t really know what they’re doing”. I always catch myself every time because I know that this is entirely false. And smart people actually use the tools they’re most comfortable in to get the job done. At the end of the day, what really matters is how much money you’re making for the capitalists at the top.4
I’m concerned for our dev friends in Ukraine. Hard to get info about what’s really going on there. Anyone got a real update that isn’t propaganda from state-run news orgs?4
Because of a previous post today I looked up the cost for these bootcamps. Is really someone out there paying 15.000$ for something you could learn for free ? Why do people do this ?2
any unity devs here? i wanted to start building apps and games using unity, and wanted some pointers on how to start. is a license really necessary, can i learn unity/ its languages for free?7
Sometimes I feel an overwhelming lack of willpower that prevents me from moving except for my eyes. It passes within a minute and leaves a temporary tiredness. I didn't really think about it until now and I have no idea why, but yesterday it happened while a friend was talking about something they're passionate about and I realised that this is very far from normal. Have you experienced something like this?5
Someone tell me why you cant put headers in server side event listeners. I had to use "polyfills" just to put authorization headers. I really dont get why they made such an oversight.3
I mean, as I don't have a job in that way yet I can't really say much.
Let's presume I have a job.
"My condolences, may god grant me mercy."
Best: Getting really close to my team and having good times with them as well as having a client love their website so much they sent me gifts and a really nice note.
Worst: Rude client who treated me like shit, made my job 103837xs harder and made me want to cry, scream and not want to come in to work ever again.1
I'm reading "A class-based reflective minimal kernel"
... do you ever get the feeling like you understand something perfectly and don't really understand it, at the same time? what does it mean?
i can even rougly imagine how this would be implemented on assembly level, but it still feels like... i don't know. it seems too straightforward and simple, i guess, so i suspect i'm not understanding it properly, since it can't be that simple...?8
Saw a Job ad stating they give a brand new MacBook Air as you get hired (as a FrontEnd developer)
Is this a red flag? BC to me it really looks like a red flag.
Why would I specifically need a Mac? Just to test stuff on shitty Safari? I really hope so and I also really hope that it won't be to start developing iOS apps11
1. Open private browsing window
2. Navigate to https://github.com
That's a really well-designed and inspiring product landing page.6
Intern spent about a week trying to set up a local ruby on rails environment. Yeah, this is not really on topic, it wasn't that bad, but it's what comes to mind.
I don't know who modelled the databases I've had to work with these past months but god damn it no fucking normalization anywhere. Inconsistent data just cost me my morning.1
I've searched for this a few times now but can't really find a good solution for my "problem".
I want to update multiple Debian servers / machines at ones or from one machine.
Puppet doesn't seem to support newer versions of Debian and I don't really want to force the updates via cron.
Are there any other ways to do it?1
What are your use cases for noSql dbs? I haven't really found a reason beyond stuff like chat messages or logs, but even those tend to work perfectly fine with SQL.
I imagine they're pretty good for prototyping, but haven't really tried them out for that yet. Perhaps for cases where you're handling billions of records?10
This guy has been a “php programmer” for 3 years now and yet he doesn’t know where to find Apache logs, is it weird that I am finding this really strange?12
"my greatest fear in life is my best not being good enough."
Currently, I am building my second business around blockchain.
I am stacking on using the popularity of cryptocurrency and it's novelty to push the product universal.
My limitation (what I think):
1. My environment - unfortunately I live in a third world country
2. Naivety: I have never scaled a business, failed in my first attempt(this is my second).
3. Lack of fund: my budget is pretty low, and no I dont have a family support to raise any for marekting and promoting the business, so I am let with option of scaling it organically ( what "organically" means is spamming social media, forum's comments section to grow customers
4. Really the only option present: most folks here wont know what it means to be in a state of "survival", failing will cause you suffering.
5. Poor network: My friends, or the people around dont understand, cant comprehen what this means.
1. I get to know what it means to carry your idea to the world again, this I hope will improve my knowledge base on business and make me less naive.
2. Portfolio boost: "wow!" that should be people's reaction when I tell them about the project.
3. If I succed, I hope the incentive will take me out of this shit hole.
4. I really want to get out of this shit hole - this should work!2
Today, I started a new project with Rails. I used always an own auth implementation, now I thought I'll give devise a try. Hell... the documentation is bad, really really bad. I really don't know why people are using this and don't write this by themselves. Anyway, I kicked devise and write it again by myself.8
Got a full stack job in a really large org. They write shit code and refuse to comment on code saying the code should explain itself.
And I’m like yeah but if you’re writing spaghetti code at least fucking comment why.
The new job’s pay is like 2x my old job so it’s really fucking good pay but my brain is melting from frustrations with these devs.3
I'll just reboot my phone, what is the worst that can happen..
"File size too big, may crash application"...
It doesn't, but for some reason it only opens my todo list as READ ONLY..
Well, that isn't very helpful is it !
How big is too big you are wondering, 200k it says, anything beyond that, big problems..
Of course, its some weird ass text format that means editing it in another editor will be, really difficult..
And I just got a newer phone, only the screen is cracked :-(
Did it happen in transit I wonder, or did the seller not notice, or did they notice and that is why it was super cheap..
It was covered in bubble wrap, in a box, which was then covered in a lot of bubble wrap, inside another box..
But when I opened it, the case of the phone was loose, like it had been dropped..
So, did that happen in transit, or maybe the sell just dropped it the moment before they started to wrap it in bubble wrap..
You can't see it easily, only at a certain angle in the light, and the phone appears to work ok so far..
I guess a really good case for it and a screen protector to help hold the screen together for a few years might work fine.. ?
Now to spend all day getting access back to my todo list..8
Writing my first code review. Even though it really is a nice review and I'm happy with the solution code, I still somehow feel like an asshole for each critique I make. Maybe it's unavoidable with code reviews / pull requests?3
Started playing around with react this week. Seams nice and i really love the hooks. But next.js on the other hand seams a lot less developed compared to nuxt.js. For example you cant get just the path or just the query parameters from a url without parsing and splitting the url yourself. Is there any other ssr framework for react i could try (excluding gatsby)?2
Currently learning go and I’m really enjoying it. It’s been a while since I learnt a new programming language and the experience is different to what I remember. I’m reading an o reilly book and when about how they implemented a common feature of programming I’m like oh no they didn’t. I think this is what normal feel when they read celebrity gossip. Hash tag goto.2
First Covid and now the war which will probably become World war 3. Despite trying my best to stay positive and work on my skills as a software engineer and a professional, it has really affected my will to keep grinding and hustling in life. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to stay motivated and on track.
Please tell me I’m not the only one feeling like this.31
Any non-tech hobby usually helps my coding, because relaxing breaks are far more efficient if I'm not just laying in a bean bag trying not to think about work but rather engaged in something unrelated. During the summer I was storing a really good electric guitar because the owner emigrated, so when I felt stuck I played some music. I used to play the cello in middle school but I was never really good at it nor did I care to practice properly because it felt a lot like yet another class to attend. Apparently music practice works whether you do it in one long or several short rounds as long as the total time is enough.1
Our lead frontend dev insists on using <select> as a dropdown for a language switcher in the navbar of a website and then make the page redirect to the localized url using the onChange event with JS.
Am I wrong thinking that's just really, really dumb, or am I just dumb?3
Well all be dead and this colossal waste of time will still continue
Would really like to settle down in a house long before I’m dead. Thanks.
What's your opinion on the framework laptop? I really like the concept and would love to get one, but I don't live in the US and I sadly can't get it yet1
Is it really good OpSec to log me out of outlook every hour when the password manager lets me automatically log back in?2
I've just been asked if I can help find a PHP developer. For backend.
I guess some people do really like pain.8
Maybe it's hard to get CSS calc() right,
but to make it really complicated,
let SASS do its erratic magic on it2
With all the talk of working as an intern here. I feel like Steven really nailed this on this video.
He is now one of my favorite youtubers because of videos like this.1
for android mobile dev
do we really need to learn retrofit?i know that is part of RestApi, but retrofit is really hard to learn and less tutorial about it,maybe if anyone good information its really helpfull for begginer like me,thanks.6
Terraform + helm-chart ... I really ned a break. Who the fuck invented this shit.
The HCL format sucks
The documentation sucks
The dev tools suck
The debug output sucks
But I'm ok with that, I can manage.
But today really it shot the bird ... I can't have a fucking comma in a string? Because idk why the fuck helm-release tries to parse that fucking string and wants to make an array or whatever out of it? Why, you fucking abomination?
Something in the docs? Nah, who reads them anyway.
Because you know it's totally not strange that a string is analyse and oh wait there's a comma in it, the dev surely wants me to make an array out of it, because you know ...
So now I have to escape my fucking comma to prevent it to parse my fucking string. I just want to have a fucking string you hideous monstrosity ....1
I was adding/removing some programs on os x, and accidentally did sudo rm -rf /usr/local ... now guess who is staying all night formating and reinstalling everything? OS X should really ask in such cases..3
Has anyone taken a gap for 6 months or more? Where are you from? What age did you take it? Why did you take it? How did it go? How difficult was it to find a job after?
I am 25 from India. Due to stress and neglect, my health has been constantly deteriorating and at this point I am really running out of options. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.7
i really fucking hate books, books are so annoying. if you comment on this rant with "lol" or some shit, how is this funny? i have an extreme hatred for books and this is not a joke, i am anti-book.30
Don't get me wrong, I love clojure, BUT, is it really that surprising how hard it is to bring in new clojurists?!?!
"oh, people get confused a lot about namespaces, why is that?"
Don't you get it? "namespaces"? Really?, I mean, seriously??? In VSCode days, to call source code paths as "namespaces" and hope people that are still learning about the JVM will understand it is NOT FEASIBLE. Thank God I was already a seasoned vim user before clojure, otherwise I'd give it up pretty fast.4
So I’m tryina put together a resume and I see a lot of dev résumé talking about increased revenue from x to y or user base from z to w.
What I don’t understand is while yes the user base did increase from z to w it wasn’t just you that caused it. The entire company was working hard at it to get there so why are u claiming that it was you. And apparently recruiters love these kpis that u make out of your ass.
Should I give in and just put them in there anyway?
I worked in a startup so my job didn’t really have a definition of what to be told to do and do I had to deal with building front end with vue to figuring out how to automate our deployment flow and it’s really hard to quantify my performance like sure 3000 tickets solved but u don’t know what portion of them were full blown features what portion was just a one liner.2
i don't really care.
plusses abd minuses, comments and reactions.
none of it affects my shitty life in aby way, sane as nothing else does.
everything is a Skyrim quest. paper flat cutout pretenses of people trying ajd failing to convince me this is a life, this is reality, i should care.
it's all just subpar pretense.4
Once again I go into interviewing with literally 4 minutes notification ahead of time on who the candidate is (obviously I still don't really know or understand what the hell is about to happen)
Management does not have their head screwed on straight; it's that simple

i think 2022 is gonna be the worst year ever judging by the omnicron and i think there will be more covid varients, and they will be more dangerous. the vaccine could just not work in response to the variant and millions of people could die because of that.
it could be a good year, but i don't really agree with that. and judging by the past two years, it doesn't look so good because of what happened in the last two years.
(blm riots, covid, india running out of oxygen for its hospitals, january sixth, etc)
but maybe, just maybe its good, but i don't really know.3
"we have installed your extensions on Microsoft Edge"
REALLY MICROSOFT?! REALLY!!!
WHY DAFU! WOULD I WANT THAT
Which language should I learn first? I have been trying to learn js and sorta have some basic stuff down like how to store and reference variables and how to display outputs, but aside from that I don’t really know much else. I was wondering if I should continue with js or switch to python or c#, my classmates have been talking about python being the future so idk.15
Bladee doesn’t really hit until ur drunk and depressed in your lonely apartment writing code while it’s storming outside.
My ex had an accident. I told the paramedics the wrong blood type for her. She'll finally experience what rejection is really like.
I had some fun times in college.
Me: This book is too outdated, we need updated information for the video capture card presentation. I'd do it but this time I'm busy.
Teammate: I'll do it.
Me: oh wow really? Thanks!
Teammate: here, take a look. I updated the information
Me: Yeah, I can see that all of those 10+ year old models have some fresh google search information in them. Thanks.
I only spend like 10-15 minutes to go to the office by motorcycle (that's the cool part, to avoid traffic).
In the past days, these 10-15 minutes are everlasting: like i start my engine and then i feels like an hour before i get home or to the office.
Man i really need a vacation from my life or to start working remotely (working on that)2
building upon the love/hate relationship that I am building with web dev . (prev: https://devrant.com/rants/5111653 and https://devrant.com/rants/5112673/)
in the last 3 weeks, I have been trying (in vain) every weekend to get a hang of HTML/CSS/web dev, and the best I was able to do was to list down the various tags used in head and what element is...
and yesterday I said "fuck this shit, I know bootstrap!" and in last 48 hours I have been able to make a homepage, authentication page (login/signup/forget pwd), a course listing page and playlist screen without a video player.
it's the wrong way of doing front-end, but I made progress :D
at least now I can focus on what I really wanna do, the backend. hope I get some good tutorial/video stuff on spring+gradle+kotlin, I don't really like XML-based java beans and stuff in spring boot.
I know tidbits about node too, but the moment am gonna jump into that shit, I will be bombarded by es5, es6, functions/lambdas/classes doing the same things, jquery, elixir, and what the fuck not.
I had learned java from a teacher in a classroom course, so i kinda know how java works and how to dive into it, but web dev is soo much awkward to dive in, I get totally lost.
however, in retrospect, I feel I do have a little bit of knowledge of being a "fake" web dev 😅 . I checked out some of my old repos and I have been trying to get into "making" web projects since 2019. back then I found a brad traversy's video on Bulma CSS, which said "no CSS knowledge required" and that guy literally just wrote everything in an HTML file and was able to make a beautiful-looking website via just 1 file!
since then I have been practicing with bootstrap and bulma and have really got a knack of using those classes. i still don't understand the magic that goes behind flex or grid, hope i am able to have enough knowledge to create a framework of css or js like these awesome bulma/bootstrap!! 😄😄9
for christ sake.. I ended up receiving all problems at a startup, I am alone every lvl of support from software exceptions to plc. Even for machines I have never received any training or explanation. How can a company afford mass holydays and rely for all level support on a single person who is still under training? I cant dug deeper in any issue because then I got overfilled with questions. I really want this week to end...1
I'm getting contacted by remotely.works with job offers, I like the idea of doubling my current salary, but it really worries me the job stability and I believe switching jobs to work remote for a US-based company leaves me with responsibilities an employer normally take cares for me.
Should I risk it and give it a try?3
WinUI looks nice and performs really well, I'm not a Windows fan but that's definitely a hidden Microsoft gem. It's a same which Microsoft was really late to the desktop development game and kept providing ugly frameworks until few years ago otherwise we could had a nice ecosystem on desktop apps on Windows as we have on macOS instead of tons of ugly and slow Electron based apps.3

An interesting discussion on SO (https://stackoverflow.com/questions...)2
I really hate when stakeholders treat me like an idiot. No, I didn’t change the existing logic of the website. It wasn’t discussed in the scope, so why would I touch it? Stakeholder, you “double checking” like this is demeaning and will only cause me to refuse future requests from you. Plus, you were at the meeting when we discussed scope, so there should be no questioning my intelligence like this.
Even tho I really hate UI in .NET like Xamarin and Windows SDK
I still love reusing all of my C# service and extensions
Rather stay in .NET than learn JS and CSS2
How is your experience with upgrading from Debian 8 to Debian 9? Want to update my homeserver but I really don't want to screw it up. Especially with the switch from MySQL to MariaDB1
Join and Smart Recruiters is really trying very hard to overtake Workday as the worst job application platform.
Join has the effrontery to send me reminder emails to fill in the same details already contained in the resume I uploaded. What the fuck is wrong with these people?1
I got both fundamental Azure and AWS certifications, need to choose one to stick to for the future, I'm leaning more towards AWS since it has over 50% more market share than Azure and a much bigger and more robust platform, I also really like how they constantly add new features and services and integration with third party software. Azure developers seem to get paid more though and I found its UI to be more user friendly so....opinions? 🤔2
I know it !
But when it finally works (reSharper) it's really not 'that' bad.
But my poor AMD Ryzen 9 3900X is not good enough I think lol.
About 30 seconds init time.2
Every single time that I realised how much of my expertise sounds like vaporware to people, mostly management and C-level.
Have been working on security for quite some time now but seeing that I can't really get through make me feel useless and not worth my weight in shit.1
I started studying JUnit and Mockito and I really don't understand. All the docs and the tutorials around are like "if call this method, then return this object. If the object returned is the one that I expected then test passed". But isn't it obvious that the returned object is the one that I expected? I fucking told it to return that object5
I'm the only one which finds really frustrating when you return to a framework or a language after a year in which you haven't used it and you're forced to Google how to do any trivial thing with it again?
It must be the 6th time I search how to do things with the C# library System.Text.Regex.
I am so gosh darn annoyed by the fact that everyone is not required by the united nations to own a Garfield fursuit!! it is really weird and annoying how they didn't pass a law to make sure everyone owns one. i am so gosh darn annoyed!!2
i would really look forward for a future with detachable heads. not that head-in-a-jar Futurama bs. just simple old unscrew the head from one body to another , like a usb kind of thing . this way i could use my chiseled friend's body to score :/
oh, and everything from upload web series. that shit is awesome
Me: I’m having trouble filling out the state tax form online. The form won’t let me check the box “I live in X city.”
HR: You don’t have to fill out the form if it doesn’t apply to you.
Me: Why are you treating me like an idiot? And why the fuck are you making assumptions about where I live?
hey uh, this is a rant about phantom forces, if you don't know what it is, look it up, anyways, that's really it.
so, i've been playing this game very actively called phantom forces and its a good game but its been ruined and the fun has pretty much been taken away. the community is dead and terrible, the developers don't care and the game is just falling off.
what i consider community is the youtube scene, and now as of january 1st, 2022, there's nothing left that's actually interesting besides godstatus and moons fps studio. honestly, its so dry and i'm sick of it.
i'm tired of seeing shitty best setup videos and gun reviews. i hate somesteven and strider and then, there's nothing to actually watch so i just watch brain-numbing shitty videos about stuff.
and then theres the developers, stylis studios is a great development team, i'll give you that but the sheer ignorance of their team is so fucking much.
its kinda obvious they don't really care about adding new features or anything new that isn't guns and its fucking sickening. just to see the same old updates, every fucking month man, its annoying and tiring.
i'm fucking tired of just seeing ape shit guns that are too high for regular players to actually unlock. like i know they're trying to please the growing number of 200+ rank users but its terrible, they haven't done a gun below rank 200 or 100 in forever. the last time they did it was like 6 months ago or something.
we've been asking for shit for years and they haven't given it to us and its fucking tiring. asking for daily quests, new features, more grips, vehicles and shit like that is obviously never gonna happen and thats the fucking problem. they don't care about their community.
but anyways, thats really all i want to say, might make a follow up post later. if you want to add your 2 cents down in the comments, you can do that. bye2
I’m leaving the company I’m working for this week. Git really sick yesterday. Pinged hr about it and told them that I know that it looks bad being sick on the last days. Asked if I could use the sickdays we get, got refused and had to use a vacation day.2
TrumpScript is one funny programming language that was formulated by four Rice University undergraduates. TrumpScript allows developers to operate with numbers that are bigger than one million. If programmers user numbers less than a million then it will generate a quote from Donald Trump as an error message: ”I’m really rich, Part of the beauty of me is I’m very rich.”1
Really minor gripe, but how comes that on a new install of Regolith ping is not installed but mtr is?
I think it's not limited to Regolith... But that's weird, isn't it?
My first interaction with a computer was probably playing Parsec on an old TI-99/A we dug out of the attic. After that there were a lot of troubleshooting sessions with my dad on various computers trying to get some game up and running. I still remember the IRQ/DMA combination needed to get sound in Duke.
It really is no mystery why I ended up working with this stuff.
Every day I’ll open up wordle, but before I enter a guess I’ll google “What is today’s wordle answer?” Then I’ll just enter in the answer to get a 1/6 every time. After that I’ll post my score to twitter and when people accuse me of cheating because I get a 1/6 every day I just lie and say “no I’m really smart that’s how I knew what the word was.”
Is that cheating??9
Any (good) programming courses/presenters ?
Udemy for example is stacked with courses from the one's i bought Wich is more than a few 🙂 only one is really zgood.
What is good?
As All courses i bought having all the information needed, lots of them are not interesting ,not enough hands on project etc.
Regarding user review , as my ampiric experience it's not saying much.
So asking you guys for the courses impacted you the most. Any subject will do 👍2
4 hours wasted due to a rather strange "scope poisoning" bug... it was really fucking strange.
Had to move the 5 lines of code, above where the error happened, to a private function.
The 5 lines just called an XLSX library which read a given file and returned an array. I don't know how but the thing somehow messed with my Soap client call one line below. The culprit must have been some IO resource handle which didn't get destroyed when in the same scope due to persisting object references..1
I just got the new ARM-based macbook. I was shocked that the menu bar is sooo fucking high now, and that there is a gap between the menubar and the maximized app.
How can this be? Are they totally nuts over there at Apple? I bet Steve would fire the responsible person immediately.
Is it really that hard to be somewhat pixel-perfect?
This looks so out of place and disgusting. It literally hurts my eyes.10
I have to say this article really expresses the feelings I have had over and over again ever since I entered this industry.
