Ok, this is a rant against some devRanters.
STOP THINKING THE ANSWER TO ANY PROBLEM IS SWITCHING TO LINUX! STOP!
I am a linux user but i fucking hate people who act like dickheads to other OS users.
-A node.js problem is not a windows/linux problem
-An android studio problem is not a windows/linux problem
-A problem with website x is not a windows/linux problem
Understand the problem and give a relevant answer, don't just spit "Use Linux" everytime.40 -
Just found a "pro" app to learn linux... The dev used a non linux icon (windows dos) as the app icon.18

My Linux machine completely froze up so I used another Linux machine to ssh into it and kill the misbehaving process.12

Me in a Windows vs Linux debate: "but can you play minesweeper during the installation?" - Linux wins12

Linux is awesome. In runs on my fridge (Tizen), my TV (Tizen), my phone (Android), my watch (Android Wear), My PC (Ubuntu) and my laptop (Kali). I'm now trying to force my parents to convert to Linux.24
-
There´s only one bad thing about switching to Linux:
You should´ve been using it from the beginning20 -
"I don't use Linux because you can't game on Linux"
Shut your fucking cocksucking mouth.
Yes, support isn't the greatest and a lot of games don't work on Linux yet and some graphical drivers don't work.
But don't fucking say you can't game on Linux because you fucking can.
Steam has a Linux game library that keeps on growing and growing.
There are some platforms for games especially for Linux as well even.
I've seen steam games with freaking high requirements run with any lag on Linux computers - open source amd drivers worked well.
The support could be much better (of games/drivers) but YOU CAN FUCKING GAME ON LINUX.
THAT YOUR GAME DOESN'T RUN ON LINUX DOES NOT MEAN THAT NO SINGLE GAME DOES.
MOTHERFUCKER115 -
> Hey I use Arch
> Did you know that I use Arch Linux?
> Arch Linux with i3 is best
> Have I told you that I use Arch Linux?
> Windows is crap, I use Arch
> I love the rollback function in Arch Linux
> i3 GAPS on ARCH LINUX IS BEST
> My girlfriend is Arch Linux
> I fuck Arch Linux
> I name my kids Arch Linux27 -
One of the linux engineers gets up with: 'I'm sorry, I just pushed a windows server sale to the sales guy :/'
Linux engineer 1: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE D:
Linux engineer 2: WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT @_@
Linux engineer 3: Why the FUCK would we want to manage yet another piece of problems?!
Engineer who said it: 'But it's still a sale guys....'
All engineers: THAT'S NOT A VALID EXCUSE O_o

Friend: Can u get me Linux OS on this pendrive?
Me: sure, Ubuntu would do?
Friend: Don't u have Linux?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.20 -
Installed Ubuntu Linux on my cousin's PC... Age 12... He starts earlier than me... :/
But I'm proud of him :)8 -
hate it when Linux users talk like they own the cyber world.. linux is bla bla windows is shit shit..
I am not a linux fan, nor a Windows fan. just I use what is the best for the requirements21 -
friend: *sees me using linux on my laptop* oh hey u got the same desktop as my boyfriend's
me: "really? hes using linux mint too? since when did he change from windows to linux?"
friend: "whats linux?"
me: "this" *shows some features*
friend: "oh i thought it was just the background picture......"7 -
I recently found an old laptop and turned on. It was running Windows but was too slow to use. I had Linux installed and it runs like new. I now have a laptop to use with no extra charge. Thanks Linux!2

Gaming on Linux:
Linux doesn't have many games..
Why? Because the market share is small.. But why is that? Because Linux doesn't have many games. FUCK29 -
Rocky Linux.
The ancient Linux distro, presumably the main desktop Linux used by cavemen.
You can still see some instances running these days.6 -
Today at school:
We had a chemistry lesson. Somehow we came to talk about Linux...
So first our teacher said that Linux is shit.
Then another student said, Linux would be like Windows.
Teacher searched for "linux ist scheiße" (which means "linux is shit") on YouTube and let us watch a video.
He also said the whole Internet says Linux is shit and that it would never be more important then Windows.
Kill me pls😢13 -
"Linux has also been ported to itself."
Yo dawg, I heard you liked Linux so I made Linux run on Linux so you can Linux while you Linux...2 -
How many guys have experienced this?
Heard this from a supposed Linux user
Other dev: I have been using Linux for 3 years I'm really good at it.
Then sees me use "cd" and "mv" commands
Other dev: wow that's some complex stuff
Me: 😂😂😂
True story2 -
DISCLAIMER: UNPOPULAR OPINION
I'm tired of the Linux community, they effectively discourage me of taking part in any discussion online
I'm currently making Windows-only soft, some game stuff, some legacy DirectX stuff you got it.
Everytime I go online, this shitty pattern happens, when I stumble upon a problem in project I don't know how to fix and I ask for help
These are responses
- HA, HA, WINDOWS BAD, HA, HA, GET REAL SYSTEM
- In Linux, we can do X too. I mean it has 4x less functionality and way shittier UX and is even harder to implement but it can probably work on too Linux, so it's better, yes, just move to Linux
- btw you didn't like Linux before? Try this distro man, it's better <links random distro>
Is there anything valuable in the Linux community? I feel like these people don't like Linux anyway, they just hate Windows. Every opinion, tip is always opinion based. Anyone who works on internals knows how much better and how well thought is Windows kernel compared to Linux kernel. Also, if someone unironically uses Linux distro on desktop PC then he's a masochist because desktop Linux is dieing. So many distros ceased work only this year.
Is it a good tool for servers and docker containers? I don't have my head stuck up my ass to admit that yes, it's much better than Windows here.
This community got me stressed right now, I fear that when I go to bathroom or open my microwave there's gonna be a Linux distro recommendation there
😠😡😠😴48 -
After over 2 months of not opening devRant, here I go again.
My dad's laptop is dying so I decided to give him my old one (because I ordered a new laptop). I asked him if should I keep Linux on it, or should I install Windows. He said "ehh, keep the Linux". So there it is! Linux Mint on top of Dell Latitude E6320 and another person converted to Linux!
Also sorry for not posting just a SS.6 -
Windows won't run? Install Linux
32 bit Mac? Install Linux
PowerPC? Install Linux
Linux solves all the world's problems12 -

Day #01 of my brother's switch to Linux:
So far so good, he's really happy with the Linux (surprisingly). The Witcher 3, Payday 2, Minecraft run flawlessly, although I had to make some small configurations in disk mounting, because of the fact that the games disk is still in NTFS file system4 -
I'm having a Linux crisis... Do I reinstall arch linux and fix some of the mistakes I made... Or do I go back to the warm comforting boosum that is Ubuntu...9

Best linux desktop environment?

I am going to reinstall my Arch Linux. It's time to try anything else than gnome.24 -
That feeling when you need to use a scanner for the first time on your linux system, and it just works.2

Best Linux distro for a grandpa?
I've just installed Linux Mint KDE and while it feels a little stiff, I don't know any linux that's better.15 -
It's only after switching to Linux you realize what all you were missing as a Dev. A package manager, excellent terminal and complete control of your system especially the updates, rock solid depending on the distro and many more. Unless I need to develop for Windows or mac I'm not switching. Long live Linux.15

Windows Subsystem for Linux should at least support mounting Linux filesystems inside those subsystems.6

Im trying to find a Linux home!
Been using Ubuntu for about a year now for schoolwork and before i was on arch Linux.
Just wanted to hear from devrant what distro is your favorit?31 -
Was trying something mischievous onto Linux,
Hats Off to all the people who contributed to its development,
Proud to be a Linux user2 -
Why does every Linux question have 10 answers
10 ways to see which process is listening on a port
25 ways to find a file on linux
2n^10 ways to... ah forget it
Instead of find a solution, your job becomes, research these solutions until you find which one works for you23 -
Die linux fanboy, die!
No seriously. I'm not trying to be salty, but i'm fed up with sysadmins and developers that proclaim that linux will one day save the world from the clutches of companies like microsoft.
STOP BOTHERING ME!8 -
Could someone please refer me a good Linux distribution for beginner, because I am now at the point, that I want to go with Linux.18

I upgraded Linux Mint to version 20 and it just worked. Desktop linux went a long way since I was using early versions of Debian.3

I have a question for all you Linux pros:
My son's PC runs on Linux Mint. We wants to switch to the Pantheon desktop so we installed it (I think). I can't work out how to actually switch to it, though.
We don't have an option when we log out.
On a related note, we switched to Linux from Ubuntu because his old machine couldn't handle Ubuntu's resource requirements. I'm curious whether vanilla Debian would perform better?
(No, I probably won't switch to Arch, that's a little too much for my limited Linux capabilities).9 -
Eleven years ago I bought my first MacBook and switched from Linux to OSX. Today I dumped my last MacBook and switched back to Linux.2
-
Do you think a dual core laptop with 2gb RAM on it can run Ubuntu and Kali Linux? The solely purpose is for programming (ubuntu) and ethical hacking / penetration testing (linux) ?
tbh, I’m learning linux because I want to try a new OS. Any tips so that I can easily adapt to this OS?
PS. I know this is a googleable question but I just want a perspective from this community.10 -
Best Linux distro for a dotnet developer and complete linux noob. Also if it can be really pretty?
😃18 -
How many of you use linux primarily?
I'm curious. I'm making alot of contents on linux on my channel these days.19 -
I can't be the only one who didn't know that Linux has a specific command to delete a directory
I've used Linux all my developer career and I never knew the command 'rmdir' existed. I always just used 'rm -rf'5 -
that Linux fanatic, Everytime. I tell him about Linux problem he says: well, it never happened to me !9

Question: What was the worst mistake you made in Linux?
So... Because I've finally upgraded my PC (rip money on bank account) I can now run a VM with Linux all the time that isn't slow as a snail.
I installed Linux mint, with 4Gb of Ram and 6 cores, and it runs like a brize, while I play on windows and stuff. BTW I'll be using the VM for programming stuff, since I'm finally at home (homesick because of burn out), when I'm better I'll finally have the patience and memory to learn new stuff and get my projects up and going.
And because I've never really used Linux I'm watching YouTube videos about Linux, and found a Perl I've watched before, #Linux Sucks
And It's great... I get so many laughs, but also, learn stuff I didn't know, like, how Linux Pros make mistakes that Windows users can't even do, like breaking the OS.
So... I would love to know, what was the worst mistakes you ever done on Linux? How did you brake you're system?
BTW this would also be great for noobs like me to not make them... I hope. Since I'll be moving full Linux when I'm comfortable.
BTW @dfox this would be a great wk ...18 -

guys try this package in linux if you are feeling pissed off of typos

A question to the other linux-nerds here.
I wonder if "env" is present in all Linux distros or can it be missing?3 -

Which Linux should I use for a dual boot for my PC? It shouldn't be too hard tobuse cause I'm an absolite Linux beginner.22

If Tetsuya Nomura was directing the development of the linux-kernel, we wouldn't have got Linux 5 but
Linux IV.20.9 and 4.14 LTS would be 4.14.5 Final ReMix with added features that contradict later kernel-development. -
A few months ago I switched from Windows 10 to Arch Linux on my main computer and the upgrade is incredible. I knew it would be, of course - I already had Linux on my laptop. But wow, on a dual monitor setup, and with the motivation to set it up nicely, it's brilliant.
My question is, what's everyone's favourite Linux distro, and why? Pictures of your desktops would be cool.4 -
WSL in Windows 10 to get Linux stuff. Crostini (a lightweight ChromeOS container tailored for Linux) running in ChromeOS to get Linux stuff.
If you want Linux, just get a proper laptop for Linux man.3 -
My wife’s computer just cannot work with Windows 11 anymore. It’s an older but still hardware rich gaming machine. I’m going back and forth between wiping the whole machine and installing Windows again to try to fix it. Or to wipe it and install a distro of Linux. I’ve been out of the inside track for Linux knowledge for 8 years. She doesn’t want to deal with anything command line all the time. And I don’t either. If I go Linux, what’s the best one that works with older machines and that’s easiest for someone nontechnical?16
-
Linux, Linux, Linux. That is ALL I hear around these parts! If ya think about it nobody makes a dime off of Linux instead of the end-user. Well, unless that user is a developer. In that case, OPEN SOURCE EVERYTHING boi.7

My friend is telling me to switch from Linux to Windows because Discord doesn't work properly on Linux... 😔8

Are any of you guys Linux gamers? I'm a gamer and a programmer on windows and I definitely wish that I had Linux and am considering switching. What are your guys' experiences with it?18

Thinking about perhaps doing a Linux From Scratch. Never done anything like it but feels like it would be a good way to learn more about how Linux actually works. Do you think it's a good idea for someone like me with an ok understanding of Linux but only on a "user level", or should I start somewhere else?9

Why does everyone here call Linux "GNU/Linux"?
Stallman would be proud, but if I'm being honest here, Linux just kind of rolls off the tongue.4 -

Okay, since I'm handicapped in Linux due to our education system which forced us to learn on windows, I switched over to Linux, Ubuntu to be specific and I can't get anything done unless I am root, So suggest me another Linux OS with full root, Exceptions Kali Linux and Arch Linux15

Probably linux. It gave a lot of us job opportunities that we might of not had previously if not for linux. Android, servers...

Guys i installed Linux mint 22 with gnome on top of it in a Virtual Machine, I installed everything i use on a daily basis and configured all applications i use, then I did a TimeShift snapshot, then i got an idea which i want your advice about, I currently use Zorin 16 OS, if i did a TimeShift restore on my main machine based on the snapshot i took in the VM without doing a fresh install of Linux mint, would that work? Or it will simply keep Zorins files and adds up Linux mint files and make a conflict?
