Thanks.8 -
Ex-coworker of mine fixed this bug a week after the site was launched and has gathered several thousand users in database.
Yep its exactly what you think it is, each time one user would update its infos, it would update his infos to all the users in the database.
Luckily I was not in charge of the project in that time, so it was really fun to watch how everyone's name was changing every couple of minutes for a whole week :D12 -
With all of this Microsoft blacklist and master bullshit, I wonder when will someone protest for git push/pull to be changed due to sexism 🙄🙄🙄7

Sex talk between programmers.
She: I'm a virgin.
He: Don't worry. They call me the virginslayer007.
She: Oh! So how many virgins have you slayed till now?
He: That would be ONE in a few minutes.
She: So u r also a virgin then..
He: Don't worry. I watched so many video tutorials. We just have to do exactly as they did. Best thing is that it can be done both for testing and production purposes.
She: Let's stick to testing purposes for now.6 -
How to from hapiness 100 to 0 in seven simple steps:
1. Buy a new 2018 gaming laptop..
2. Install Linux on it for work..
3. Figure out your touchpad is not supported even by latest kernel rc..
4. Spend four days going through forums, bugzillas and overflows while messing around with recompiling kernel, drivers, configs and 3rd party libraries..
5. Lie down and pray someone will add support for your device in kernel in near future..
6. Try not to cry..
7. Cry, cry a lot..10 -
I hate YouTube recommendations. They just show you the same videos again and again after some time.9

Getting really sick of brand naming conventions these days, Youtube just suggested me a video called "Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra vs iPhone 11 Pro Max!"
Like what are those, Transformer names? 🙄12 -
My second year of high-school, we started having class in computer science. I was really looking forward to it cause I always wanted to learn programming.
On first sight it appeared that the professor which taught the class knew something, he looked like a genuine geek with those dorky glasses, briefcase and pants like Steve Urkel, but after couple of his lessons you could see he had no real dev experience and just basic understanding of programming in theory. He was more reading stuff from the book than he was trying to explain them to students and give some real world examples.
So it was just one these days, everybody got back from vacation, it's hot outside, the guy is just reading sentences from his book, half of students talk with each other and other half doesn't give a fuck about him or his class. Pretty sure I was the only one trying to listen to him and learn something from his recitals.
All of a sudden he notices the atmosphere in the classroom, slams the book shut, gives out couple of F-s to the loudest students and yells out loud "NONE OF YOU IN THIS ROOM WILL EVER ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING IN YOUR LIFE, BARE ALONE IN PROGRAMMING"
At first I felt like shit, but soon after that I started thinking "who the hell are you to tell me what I could or will accomplish in my life". Couple weeks later I've bought myself a first book in programming and started learning C++ late at night since I understood that I won't learn anything about programming in that school. Two years later I was correcting this same professor with his claims on a whiteboard in front of a whole class.
Today, seven years after his words I'm a developer living in foreign country with what I could say somewhat a solid experience and understanding of how both software and web are build, while that same professor still recites to his pupils difference between assembly and object code, while praying nobody asks him where and how these are used. For maybe a quarter of my paycheck. So much about his psychic powers..4 -
Udemy strikes again with their amazing courses..
So many things wrong in this image that I don't even want to start..
Seriously, who teaches people to write code like that?25 -
Between plague and smoke, spending way too much time indoors. Localised co2 got pretty high in the office my husband and I share and opening the windows is dicey during giant spider season even before the wildfires.
So as a result, I'm starting a little indoor garden in each room. The succulent are going to be hydro, and the prayer and snake plant will get soil so I have some place to dump my coffee grinds other than the rose garden. In the next month or so we also want to set up some living moss panels to help control the nitrogen balance.
And of course, obligatory rpi sensor suite and irrigation is inbound as well. That'll be a shared project. 😸48 -
Once I watched a 30min YouTube video on functional programming just because the presenter was cute. 😘
Anyone ever did this ???
And btw the video is Functional programming by Anjana vakil.13 -

How has development come to the point that 16GB of RAM is not enough to smoothly develop a simple website?
Where have we lost the way? 🤔 🙄41 -
So I'm in the middle of the website migration that was made in Wordpress.
Just made a database dump and decided to take a look at it cause it looked really big for a site that only needs internal management. Found out they use contact form plugin which stores binary of attachments directly in database..
And people ask me why I hate Wordpress and so called Wordpress devs..5 -
Hi guys, this is my first rant so bear with me..
Stupid Indian fucking institutes doesn't give a shit about the things we learn in the institute. This curriculum is like from the 90's. I learnt NodeJS recently and I thought wow a new concept, not even my professor knows about it. I must be on top of the world or at least any way near it and then I see these video tutorials on the internet which are posted 2 years ago. OH MY GOD!! The thing is that my department's HOD doesn't know about that and the funny thing is that I'm doing a project under him "SECURITY OF WEB APPLICATIONS" and the only thing he knows is PHP. And FYI I'm not studying in an institute which is oblivious to the outside world. It's called an NIT, an institute of national fucking importance. At the end, I blame myself though. I should have been on myself not being completely dependent on the professors for knowledge.
I could fill the entire text area with the rant.
But then people will start ranting about the rant.
I will be posting more Indian-devRant soon so.. peace till then.
( I bet they don't know about Git/Github too)24 -
Ffs Bitbucket, is it really so much to ask for to have a mobile responsive website in 2020 to normally review my pull requests.
Not like we're giving you loads of money for your service already or anything.. 😌6 -
So my HP laptop got a weird problem lately.
It doesn't charge when I plug in the charger(yes, i turned on the switch). So I began searching forums for a solution and then found out that there are so many people like me out there.
Then I was like ok, chill. There are many people like me, there must be a solution somewhere.
And after doing lots of research and trying all the solutions in the internet, the only thing that worked out is this ....
Step1 : turn on and the laptop and plug in the charger.
Step 2: Turn off the laptop.
Step 3: Now turn it back on and poof there you go, the laptop's charging.
And then I improvised the solution myself, which is u can replace the switch off part with Sleep which saved me some time.
And then whenever I try to show something my friends somethjng on my lap and the battery gets low, I do the ritual. For a brief moment their face becomes like dude I'm gonna kill you off, why the hell did u bring me here and now u r turning that off. And then I explain the history of my laptop.
Why HP whyyy ?12 -
manager: we had great feedback last week, real users were testing our app! However, we have noticed a lot of issues regards database performance and data replication...

manager: no, 6 users so far7 -
Unpopular opinnion: Whole IT industry is becoming more and more degenerative with each passing day..17

People like this guy commentating are the main reason why evolution is still just a theory.
Let's take for example someone having a problem with their car not starting up.
Already seeing this guy's response would be:
"Personally I hate cars. Seems like its always they're broken. Have you just tried using your legs and run 40 kilometers to work every day?"
No I didn't you fucker, and you know why? Because it's not convenient. The same way how it's not convenient for me or any sane developer to drop to a command line and run custom query (which can be automated) every time I want to quickly check some values in development.
And no, the OP didn't ask for setup of this on production, the conversation kept on in comments below and this guy was still defending his productive idea.26 -
I wonder if the meeting at Rubber ducks quack association goes like this...
Why the hell doesn't my guy see the problem? It's fucking right there! Why don't you see it??? OMG! I request for a change of owner.1 -
Seriously? Javascript is the best?Javascript is the future?
Dont get me wrong. I have to use angularjs and nodejs in my work so I am quiet familiar with them. Js csn be usefull and make things easier and simpler but it comes with a price... You can do someting in third amount of effort but you have to debug three times more. Yes you can use typescript but thats not an option always. What about single threaded design yes you can use callback and promises but really? Thats the way it is should be working? And what about that if you need one functionality than you dowbload a module but with that you are started to depend from other 737373737 packages.
I am just simply not getting this hype around JS.24 -
Wanting to push the code to remote at 3am and just hit the bed.. Appereantly bitbucket has other plans for me 🤷♂️
Also chuckles to them for still running python 2.7 on their systems 😏4 -
This one was probably last week of my highschool education so everyone including myself were drunk as fuck like 90% of the time.
Came home drunk one evening and woke up in the morning with a working keylogger waiting to be deployed on school computers. Apparently I've even implemented FTP upload, some basic firewall bypasses and autostart feature. Everything was actually quite good, excluding my stupidness to upload captured data on server through FTP, but there was anyways no-one smart enough in that school to decompile a Windows executable binary.
What's more interesting is until that moment I've never written anything remotely so complicated - I was doing examples from the book and didn't think I have enough knowledge to make program that has any real life application.
After that day it started coming to me that one day I could actually earn for life with programming.2 -
Every time I see a cringe job post like this I internally scream hard. There, fixed it for them 🫡15

How the hell does PR containing production secrets and private keys gets 3 approvals and gets merged upstream? 😬 🥴6

Just stumbled across this gem last night. You guys know how biggest online games site in my country (also backed up by largest ISP) handles reset password requests?
After clicking "Forgot password", it asks you to login to Gmail (cause everyone is assumed to have and use one, right?) and then opens "New Email" window prefilled with some template data which you're expected to finish (in screenshot below).
And I just wanted to play some Ludo with my friends.. 🙄🙈2 -
Gotta love moments when you find legacy code like this :)
P.S. Yeah, that was the whole script, written by just one guy.3 -
This is response I got from my ex tech lead in a company that I left six months ago..
Btw account is registered on my private email and has admin access to Slack full of confidential files.
Don't even know why I worked there..13 -
My friends just got me the best birthday present ever. Always wanted a rubber duckie, never thought I'll have something even better, my own Tux - will call him Tuxy 😊🐧6
-
Just got an email with a new really nice douche-bag move from Postman to raise their prices again (this time for almost double) on their paid plans with excuse "it will help us deliver more of what our customers need from us."
Even though I've decided to look other way around for years on their electron-based garbage of bloated app, have not been a fan of their pricing 8$/month/user just for a simple feature such as sharing request schema and environment data.
This simply needs to stop and I'm seriously thinking about doing something about it. 🙄10 -
So I pulled an OLD ibm out of a trailer, that is literally falling down, today. Anyway, this cpu had been rained on and been in extremes of heat, and cold, so much so that there was moss growing on it.
I pulled it out and plugged it in, with the original plug *that was rusted in*, and.. it worked. The screen and everything worked perfectly! The floppy disk that hadn't been used in over 14 years and was stuck inside the reader, worked...
Mind blown!
As the old saying goes, they don't make 'em like they used to.3 -
Me: closes eyes and says to myself how I MUST get some sleep..
My brain: *starts thinking about keywords MUST, SHOULD, REQUIRED and how those are defined in RFC-2119*
Why I just can't get some normal sleep, could it be licensing issue with my brain? 🙈2 -
Just had one of the most cringiest HR interview ever. I'm looking for a new job, and yesterday applied for several med/senior backend developer positions and immediately got response from a well known software company.
We schedule a call today 9:00am, so I take homeoffice and wake-up half an hour earlier than usual.
First thing I notice, lady is 5mins late, but okay its morning, we're all humans, so I don't mind it even though some other person might call it a classical sign of disrespect and hangup right away.
First question: Why did you apply for our company?
- Euhhmm cause I'm looking for a new job and I saw your job ad yesterday?
Second question: Why would you like to work at our company?
- Left speechless.. Well I honestly don't know, not really following your company, I know that you exist but that's about it, shouldn't you be telling me this? (*heavy breathing on the other side*)
The rest of interview left me quite uninterested due to initial questions, like what the hell, I can imagine these being alright for interns and junior developers who might be fascinated by opportunity to work for a big and well known company to build their CV, but c'mon I've went through shit already and honestly don't care for who I work for as long as they have interesting projects, are paying me right and have couple small benefits I'm looking for such as homeoffice, gym card etc..8 -
The only reason I'm still using WhatsApp or Facebook is because my classmates have a social group in which they share important information and tbh that's easy than dealing with emails.
Have to deal with bullshittery for one more year.9 -
I really don't understand how developers from Facebook, WhatsApp and other messaging platforms still didn't figure out that ever since they introduced message previews on push notifications that those "seen" check-marks became utterly useless in most of cases..
This COVID-19 quarantine just confirms it, since nobody is doing anything else except being on phones and computers whole day but somehow it still takes them several hours to "read" the message..9 -
Not day passes by that I don't think who the hell thought it would be a good idea to have Ctrl+R shortcut on web version of Outlook for replying to email.. 🙈6

Wow thanks play music for the handy navigation shortcut. Now I can hear the previous songs again and again! 😑1

Life's sometimes just amazing.. like those moments when you do "rm -rf /var" instead of "rm -rf var" and your whole system gets full of errors / unexpected behavior and random crashes.. Since I have project deadline tomorrow, really dunno should I cry or laugh right now11

So recently I started to observe a little upgrade in the Google's searching algorithm. The next suggestion in Google's search box is depending more on my immediate preceding search. It's so good that its starting to creep the hell out of me.4

Stupid fucking idiot startup asshole hired me as an intern. Promised me the money after the work is done. We were friendly during the internship. The work is done and now it's been a week and still no money yet. He's saying it'll take some time. To beat you to shit it'll take some time you asshole!
Lesson learned: Never ever be friendly with the guy who hires you. Like never!!
Also money later isn't a good thing.8 -
That feeling when you have unused 128gb ssd in your workstation for more than a year and have no clue why you originally installed it.. 🤔1

- Yeah seems fine. But we need to assess it properly.
- Ok, let me show you in details.
- Err.. hmm, reach out to me tomorrow.

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO **REACH OUT** TO YOU???? VIA SMOKE SIGNALS??!! Some supernatural powers??
Oh man, I hate depending on other people to finish a fucking job.4 -
Finally finished the longest ticket I've ever worked on in my life. The ticket title and description was a pretty simple and straightforward one: "Upgrade from PHP 7.4 to 8".
If it was only so simple in real life. Our application is mostly done with API Platform framework, which is based on top of Symfony framework which is based on top of PHP language.
Once I did PHP 7 => 8 upgrade I needed to upgrade API Platform 2 => 3. But of-course that couldn't have been done as before that I needed to upgrade from Symfony 5 => 6.
This all was literally an equivalent of touching into a wasp nest - it took me a bit over 5 months and 800 hours of work and there was literally not a single source file left untouched.
In the process of all of this I've ran into literally dozen undocumented feature-breaking changes, broken backwards-compatibility promises and inside out architectural changes - from both the frameworks and the language itself.
Upgrading just one major version of anything SHOULD NOT be so hard. And to top it all up just to think I will need to do this again in a year or two..
Experiences like these really set my hate for time-based model of releases and the state of today's development in general.6 -
Dunno who it was, but not cool posting a rant about how Windows doesn't allow creating extension-only files like ".htaccess" through Explorer and then deleting the whole thing right after I give him answer that it's possible if you simply name it ".htaccess."
These kind of people are exact reason why whole communities and sites like Stackoverflow turned into judgemental bastards..2 -
When you decide it's not worth of your time to go through lengthy code documentation and just run that stackoverflow snippet straight on production.. 🤠

Genuine question, what was the most comments you've left in a single code review?
Just reviewed pull request submitted by a developer working for a contractor company and needed to leave 70 comments. Seventy.
Opened LinkedIn and saw a post from that same developer saying he left the contracting company an hour ago. I still can't believe it.14 -

Microsoft Teams logic when using it from Chrome on Linux:
Wanna have a team call with multiple people? Sure no problem, proceed.
Wanna have a direct call with one person? Hell no, we don't do that here!
Also lets just ignore the fact that you are actually running Google Chrome, you should really try out Windows and Edge.2 -
People in the Apple Store are either extremely chill or extremely pretentious. I've yet to find someone in-between.

As a developer it is a crucial to be productive. Obviously the most effecient way is to get in the flow.
What is your rituale to reach this state?7 -
Anyone knows why comment limit on web version of devRant is 1000 chars and on mobile 2000 chars?

Eavesdropping by phone's microphone and speech recognition to serve targetted ads by Google? Anyone here had a feeling this happened to them or knows is this already a thing?
Happened to me on my Android phone multiple times over last year on different subjects, that I was talking live with a person, for example how someone had eyelid surgery (my phone was locked in my pocket the whole time and I didn't google search what that is, or made any text input into device whatsoever) and couple minutes later an ad came on my phone for exactly something we were discussing before. Weird coincedence or something more? 🤔9 -
Just first time tried an OpenAI PHP client package and this is what I got as a response on first request ☠️10

I'm not really active here recently but thought it would be nice to share a cool website I ran into: https://refactoring.guru/design-pat...
Imo every developer who aspires to be more professional should have it in its bookmarks and ocassionally look into it when facing a code design dilema. -
That moment when you hire someone for a small part of the protect and they suggest you to re-write the entire project using a different language/framework.

If anyone here wants to know how a generic engineering college will be like in India, here's the video
https://youtu.be/BhWWiCwRb7s
Do watch it. It is accurate af.
I don't like the education system in India, so this video hit me right in the feels.
Sneak peek:
I didn't choose this engineering life, neither did engineering life choose me. It was shoved down my throat by my teachers while my hands were tied to my back by my friends and my parents watched in silence.1 -
PHP are you freaking kidding me right now? Why are you forcing me to write ugly and meaningless code like this?
Today I just learned that boolval("false") will return true.
I'd deffo expect this from casting operators, but not from a function which even has val inside of its name.
What purpose is to have functions like these in language if they just serve as plain wrapper for casting operators8 -
Boss!!!
Boss isn't a person.
It's not a name.
It's a feeling.
It's an emotion.
It's something that you are afraid of even in ur dreams.
It's something that pushes you, shouts at you, criticises you, shouts at you again, but at the end he gives you appreciation, money and fame(sometimes).
No matter how shitty the pay is, it is something. Better than nothing.
If you don't like it, go to another boss.
or better
BE YOUR OWN BOSS.2 -
Do you guys know brain.fm? Its superb making you more productive. I have found it yesterday and it is look promising to my productivity.2

Sometimes NVIDIA fucks up big time.
Last time I was a writing a UI application in Java. I took some break and updated the NVIDIA drivers so that you know it will 'increase' gaming performance. Next day I was trying to launch the app and the UI doesn't show up. It took me over half an hour to realise that there was no fault in my code and it was the fucking update. -
Random thought while upgrading schema and manually recreating 100+ rows table; when looking for a job, make sure you look for one where company focuses on employing brainpower, not manpower.. 🤦♂️ 🙄

Just tried Xiaomi Mi Band vibration alarm. It literally only gives 15 short bursts over the 10 seconds and then it stops. There's almost no configuring available in their app except for snooze option which only has default value of 10 minutes, so it means you're stuck with just choosing an alarm time.
Do they actually expect people to wake up by that?4 -

On a road side bench. I was testing a GPS application I did back in college. The application stopped working when I get to the destination. I figured the problem right away and couldn't resist fixing it immediately.
[ Few hours later...] (It was a small change but you know, Android studio on a low end laptop)
Tested and completed the app successfully. Oh and by the way, it was 11 in the night. I can just imagine what the people that saw me that night could have thought. 🤣 -
Dear ranters,
Keep in mind that while ranting on a topic the human mind's ability to write a long sentence with perfect wording will decrease slightly, so my sincere request to Grammar NaZi's is Fuck off bro..

So I have been using my HP laptop(r007tx) for over two years and a half now. Here are it's top 'features'
1. A dead pixel on the screen. Slowly it started to grow every time I close and open the lap and eventually it grew to a horizontal line across the screen. Luckily it was under warranty.
2. Volume is very low. Can't be fixed.
3. Broken hinges. Never had it faced any impact.
4. WiFi adapter stopped working after an year. Bought an external adapter.
5. Monitor frame started to come off.
6. Battery is shit. Explained it a bit detail here.
https://devrant.io/rants/655618/...
7. DVD player doesn't work.
Most of the problems came just after one year. If you are thinking to buy HP laptop do pay for extended warranty.
But still successfully running it because of the software that every dev has developed.
Kudos! -
Hi All, I need some advice.
I have been working my ass off for a foreign client for 2 years(2018 college passout). I'll be getting an onsite opportunity in some time for a few months. I'm planning to study masters in Germany after I come back. The main reason I want to go onsite is because the pay is good and it could cover a lot of my expenses.
Would it be unethical to go onsite, work, come back and resign immediately(with notice period)?
Any suggestions how to tackle the situation because I also need some recommendations from my work place to apply for Masters and I'm not sure if they'll give me in this situation?1 -
I hate it when devs use value attribute instead of place holder especially when you know that input text is definitely going to change.
