This girl from financial department pissed me off so badly I took 15 minutes of my private time to slightly modify CSS and JS for her user in our intranet panel, made everything pink and blue, animate all the buttons to randomly barrel roll and made the mouse cursor explode colourful star particles with each click.
She *liked* it, said it was *sweet* and *apologized* for being an ass. Robbed me of all the satisfaction. :(6 -
My summer internship adventures
Cunt Boss: you will receive salary and a bonus at the end of the project
Me: *works for 3 months*
Cunt Boss: *sends 60 fucking euros to my bank account*
Me: is that just the bonus?
Cunt Boss: oh I'm sorry, we have some financial troubles here and that's all I can give you
Thanks! Now I can buy you a dildo so you can go fuck yourself11 -
TL;DR: disaster averted!
Story time!
About a year ago, the company I work for merged with another that offered complementary services. As is always the case, both companies had different ways of doing things, and that was true for the keeping of the financial records and history.
As the other company had a much larger financial database, after the merger we moved all the data of both companies on their software.
The said software is closed source, and was deployed on premises on a small server.
Even tho it has a lot of restrictions and missing features, it gets the job done and was stable enough for years.
But here comes the fun part: last week there was a power outage. We had no failsafe, no UPS, no recent backups and of course both the OS and the working database from the server broke.
Everyone was in panic mode, as our whole company needs the software for day to day activity!
Now, don't ask me how, but today we managed to recover all the data, got a new server with 2 RAID HDDs for the working copy of the DB, another pair for backups, and another machine with another dual HDD setup for secondary backups!
We still need a new UPS and another off site backup storage, but for now...disaster averted!
Time for a beer! Or 20...
That is all :)4 -
For an ostensibly security-focused financial company, these people really don't know what they're doing. Everything I've seen thus far is so hacked-together that I feel like i'm looking at code written by high schoolers.
Seriously, some of API Guy's code is better than this.
And they even make a point to remind me of ultra basics like `.to_a`, `.map`, or "a good command to keep on hand is `rake db:migrate`" -- like seriously? Those are in bloody "Intro to Rails" tutorials (and it's `rails db:migrate` as of Rails 5). For an ostensibly all-senior team, these devs are awfully junior.5 -
Just went to a bar in a nearby town and miraculously got a contact of a fairly big investor by talking to the barman there. Apparently said investor is also technically inclined, and has a fair amount of financial resources to help make my plan to make my own distribution and compete with Canonical, Red Hat and SUSE a thing.
Talk to barmen people! They're the people that have contacts - in pretty much every industry. They're the people that know people.9 -
The corporate cunts have no clue how manufacturing facilities work. They decided to roll out major changes to their financial systems that control how workers report their hours.
They decide that Dec 29th is a good idea. We are a 24/7 operation and the last 3 days of the year are the busiest time of the year by far trying to meet quotas.
Even today they are trying to finish functionality and are unsure how certain parts will work. This will be a disaster. -
Everybody is talking about react, angular, Vue etc, and here I am, fixing ie7-8 website compatibility for a financial-bank institution.10

I need a break.
A break from stress of endless expectations
From school
From work
From being made fun of
From criticism
From criticizing myself
From not being able to do fun things
From vague instructions
From a lack of sleep
from inconsistency.
From unclear objectives
From financial/medical/emotional stress
From life
From hatred
From destruction of my emotional stability
From a lack of confidence
From unfulfilled decisions
From trying to hide under a mask
From jealousy
From lists
From repetitive obliteration of any hope I have
From me crap talking myself
From pleasing people
Oh well, at least after tomorrow, I’m on full-time break...12 -
What kind of dumb fucks are making these job application forms, initially I thought asking my “sexual preference” was weird but then I saw these !!!!
How does my earlier financial condition or what my parents did when I was 14 help my job application when now I am 28 !!

Being responsible for a massive breach of personal & financial data.
Seriously, that crap scares me way more than any amount of downtime does.1 -
My wife and I just put an offer on a house, 7 try and this offer was accepted. We're trying to get our financial approval together, she's a nervous wreck and keeps asking me if that's any news because I'm dealing with the bank. So I set this up.
She called me after a couple hours to tell me the dog house had called to confirm my reservation.3 -

Coworker made a tool to automate part of our job and she sent it to me. After 5 seconds of using it I found a bug... she has been using it for weeks. Now I don't trust anything she has done around here. (It's a financial tool and the bug is changing certain numbers to negative so it subtracts instead of adds...)5

Just saw a youtube video about what the author of the core-js library is going through.
I feel for the man, honestly, I could never work fully on open sourced software since I know how hard it makes it to pay the bills, and but a handful of developers can actively receive financial backup.
What seems crazy to me, is that no company has come forward as sponsors for his creation.
His github account is a wild ride:
https://github.com/zloirock/core-js
I looked around the internet, there is a lot of hate aimed at this man, which I think it is unfair.
Devs can be really mean spirited5 -
I see so many freaking excel sheets where a database should have been used that I wouldn't be surprised if, at the veeeeery bottom of all things, the entire global financial system runs based on a single excel sheet made by a dude in the 90s. And since then poorly maintained.11
-
Yeah, sure Fortune. Please tell me more about my personal finances that you know nothing about.
The longer this drags on the more it feels like a war against the proletariat.
I also feel like the aristocracy is building a terrible financial charade that will be the toast of the town by November. They REALLY want to make sure the labor doesn't see any rise in wages. Can't have those peons thinking they can get ahead, right?
It's going to be the best sales pre-thanksgiving! It's going to be so popular one would say it's going to be on sale on fire, or is it a fire sale?
When November rolls around, I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.15 -
Did anyone of you worked for a company where:
- there was a financial success
- code was clean and was enabler for fast delivery
- tests were professional
- CI/CD pipeline was working as expected
- features were developed in small chunks (few PRs per day)
- managers were trustful and were solving real issues to help you
- refactor was part of the everyday development
Is it even possible? Is there at least one company who achieved success doing the above?13 -
You used Node and Mongo to handle highly concurrent financial transactions. What where you thinking.10

I found a vulnerability in a famous financial institute site. So I asked their customer care over email, how can I report it?
They said: "remove your cookies" 🤦9 -
If anyone has been keeping up with my data warehouse from hell stories, we're reaching the climax. Today I reached my breaking point and wrote a strongly worder email about the situation. I detailed 3 separate cases of violated referential integrity (this warehouse has no constraints) and a field pulling from THE WRONG FLIPPING TABLE. Each instance was detailed with the lying ER diagram, highlighted the violating key pairs, the dangers they posed, and how to fix it. Note that this is a financial document; a financial document with nondeterministic behavior because the previous contractors' laziness. I feel like the flipping harbinger of doom with a cardboard sign saying "the end is near" and keep having to self-validate that if I was to change anything about this code, **financial numbers would change**, names would swap, description codes would change, and because they're edge cases in a giant dataset, they'll be hard to find. My email included SQL queries returning values where integrity is violated 15+ times. There's legacy data just shoved in ignoring all constraints. There are misspellings where a new one was made instead of updating, leaving the pk the same.
Now I'd just put sorting and other algos, but the data is processed by a crystal report. It has no debugger. No analysis tools. 11 subreports. The thing takes an hour to run and 77k queries to the oracle backend. It's one of the most disgusting infrastructures I've ever seen. There's no other solution to this but to either move to a general programming language or get the contractor to fix the data warehouse. I feel like I've gotten nowhere trying to debug this for 2 months. Now that I've reached what's probably the root issue, the office beaucracy is resisting the idea of throwing out the fire hazard and keeping the good parts. The upper management wants to just install sprinklers, and I'm losing it. -
So, I'm a Jr. Webdev started one year ago to work on a €200mln. retail platform. Our development team consists out of my Sr. dev who designed the whole platform and it's basically his baby. Now he's leaving and it's expected from me to do new developments, support, meetings with managers from all over Europe, roll-outs in new countries, deal with all the issues SAP has, eat their bullshit when they can't upload a .csv file because they are too stupid to check for missing leading zeros. Listen to important their new functions are that they want because 120% of the salespeople needs it. How stupid can this company be to take the financial risk? I'm done.9

Man fuck the heat, fuck the chaos and prolonged temporariness of the weeks after uni ends, fuck my executive dysfunction, fuck the job hunt process and fuck my crumbling body that I never bothered to fix because the train ticket was a serious financial commitment and because, again, executive dysfunction.
Fucking hate my situation right now. And the fact that it's not actually bad as far as human situations go doesn't help one bit.2 -
Six or seven years ago, I worked for a large financial organization as part of a very large effort to convert server assets from physical to virtual. The consultants on site were in bed with the vendor of a terrible piece of software designed for that purpose. After a couple weeks on the job I'd had it, and sat down in between sessions of "validating" the conversion procedure, and started writing my own software for converting Linux servers. After a couple days it was working great, and they wound up adopting my software as the default method for Linux conversions.
Years later, I'm interviewing for my current job and one of the interviewers tells me he used my converter some time later and loved it. Pretty sure it's what swung the interview for me. -
A bug which takes 6 days to be found/fixed. Screw you financial data. 👹
🏀on the good side: whole class was de-constructed and re-factored + no other bugs were found! 😀🔥1 -
Idea: social media, hard mode
- Likes are a currency
- You get one like per day to spend on whatever post you feel is worthy
- After 30 seconds, you are unable to unlike the post
- The poster gets the like, which they can spend
- You can only post once per day
- Each additional post costs a like
- You can only comment once per day
- Each additional comment costs a like
- Sure, why not, sell likes for money. Fuck. Dev's gotta eat.
PROS:
- Less time-consuming by design. Interact without losing yourself in social media.
- Learn financial management
- Encourages only good content
- More difficult to get an inflated ego from
CONS:
- You'll probably get 0 likes on most of your posts, loser
- Limits discussion, as comments are limited12 -
So I'm not sure I understand this question fully, if it is meant only through code, than I guess none or those people I got to know while I was doing my algorithms and data structures project last semester where we were helping each other with our code
If it's meant generally through code related activities then I gained lots of friends in uni in classes and here on devRant of course and actually yesterday I got to talk unexpectedly about coding and programming languages on an event with a guy who actually studied financial maths in Vienna but now works as a tester and works with databases, that was nice6 -
What is the best financial advice you've ever been given?
I see a lot of well paid developers in my area living month to month with no plan for the future, what would you tell them?10 -
I work for a big financial company and they're saying i'm going to get a promotion but have to go through an interview process and be compared with external candidates. Basically that a new position will be created and I need to apply for it.
To me it feels like an insult as promotions should be a reward for good work done on the job?
And technically I'm like the most experienced, expert on the team...
Everyone comes to me asking for help or to explain things...23 -
Not a bug, but a government web system to have control over financial expenses from a region in my country has the login access admin:admin.
Somehow they manage to keep it like that for years with no problem.3 -
Hey guys, Been a while...
Quick status update
Moved out of my parent's house
Now a lead backend engineer at a crypto exchange.
Getting offers from startups without even applying, just referrals
Still underpaid by global standards but very comfortable locally.
1year+ of financial stability
Lots of motivation from the lovely people here when I started out, I'm grateful1 -
It was probably Microsoft Excel as part of backend infrastructure inside financial institution.
As far as I remember there was some spreads configuration and price feeder inside excel.1 -
Just a rant... It really sucks to work with maven on a security-paranoid financial institution enforcing ntml proxy auth...
Also usb ports disabled... :(5 -
Yesterday one of our clients gave us the OK to launch their annual financial reports, 4 minutes before stock market closed and most of us was heading home.
Problem was we didn't have the proper access to their servers, so I and a senior consultant just spent a few hours calling our client and their IT infrastructure provider.
6 hours later, a large bill from the IT provider for after hours work, the job was done. A job that would take 5 minutes of uploading and 5 minutes of database transfer. -
Buying a motherboard variant without WiFi to save 100€ is the worst financial decision ever...
Here I am, after spending over 300€ in USB adapters first, then PCIe boards, buying another one because it broke again...
The alternative is to buy a new motherboard (gen 4 in 2023?!) or change the whole system... two even worse financial options.14 -
Welp, got the weekend off and since computer doesn't work anymore, me has no entertainment.
Me is sad. 😞
Me is in a financial clasp.
If the phone gives in too (which, let's be honest, it's nearing it's natural death time) I'm majorly fucked. Let's hope it doesn't give in for a few more months at least. (until I finish thesis, at the very least)
... I think I'm gonna spend this weekend just being sad. 😞 And PMS, ofc. 😐 🔻26 -
I didn’t turn down a dev freelance project when the client decided against going with best practices because the solution I offered was a well-established design pattern but created a need for a financial management change she didn’t like. I stupidly built what she asked for. It worked fine in the 3rd party vendor test environment but failed on production. After hours of analysis of code to ensure no changes happened to my source during test->prod deployment, and the vendor denying they had config differences between them, and the client refusing to pay, all I could do was abandon the project.2
-
You know as a FOSS developer with no company affiliation the "I am once again asking for your financial support" meme is truer every second
I'm sad and broke please help5 -

At the age of 50 I have learned what FICA is.
FInancial Customer Account
It'a a SAP module but I suppose It was the name of a Penthouse department.
P.S.
FICA in Italian are female genitals, "recupero" is retrieve.
It sounds like "pussy retrieve".
This document was made by a staff of 4 men and 4 women.1 -
How do you deal with working on something that you have absolutely no interest in?
I’m working on financial software, at the moment stuff hay handles invoices etc, and even talking about for more than 2 minutes has be yawning and struggling to keep my eyes open.8 -
Oh look guys the national institute of health government has sent me a financial help and wants me to log into an oddly designed twitter login page so i can connect my financial wallet and claim my financial reward from the governmental national institute of health organization1

These commercials for the Earnin app are cancer.
"I know you don't get paid until tomorrow why are you buying [stupid shit]?"
-- what kinda psycho knows when their friends get paid?
"I'm using the Earnin app to get paid today so I can buy my dog some food."
--If your budgeting skills are so shitty that you have to rely on an app to pay you before you check, then perhaps an animal is something you don't need to have with your current financial situation.
Like Jesus Christ the situations are all illogical and make 0 sense, yet they're fucking EVERYWHERE.3 -
One employer has just contacted me, said that my resume seems very interesting and invited me.
Now I'm looking at their website, all from 00s and with cringey fonts. Ok, they do "automatization of financial systems" and etc.
Alright, scrolling down... Suddenly, I see cut from the familiar soviet cartoon "Vovka in the Far Away Kingdom", where in the end Vova says:
- Well, that would do!
IRONY 😂
Now I'm questioning my will to attend this interview.4 -
so this client asked me to build a fully functional financial education app for kids that she needed to present as a project in the next two days...
I did attempt it and it felt good but failed to meet the deadline cos I almost died1 -
Had to fire two good developers and a decent QA engineer due to financial reasons in the company :(
That was the painful part, but moreover GUESS WHO'S GONNA GET MORE RESPONSABILITY FOR THE SAME WAGE?!
So long and thanks for all the fish. I'll see you in valhalla4 -
>"We need this project finished for tomorrow"
<"But we don't even know what the client wants for parts X, Y and Z"
I'm currently in a sinking ship of a company that has no proper project management or documentation. Requirements mutate with the lead manager's biorhythms and all projects are delayed because he's incapable of scouting or retaining talent.
Unless I've misread their financial situation, I don't think they'll stay in business throughout the year without some major restructuring.2 -
Just started today with Python 3. I don't know but I really start to like the language. Its not to difficult and it has nice syntax. Currently I'm working on a little financial overview generator. It parses the CSV file from my bank and sorts it into categories. Really fun to make. Do you guys made some nice projects in python?4
-
the coolest project was mine: a dynamic DNS like dyndns, wrote in scala, an API layer in ruby and a lot of sysadmin stuff like ospf any cast. A big technical success, a total financial failure... but I enjoyed and I learned a lot!

Really glad the privacy community can make some impact. I still don't understand why venmo has to has any public transaction feed and I don't think they have public off by default still, but at least they are explaining things to users instead of being sneaky with their dumb social-network-ish-thingy that made ALL OF YOUR FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS PUBLIC!!????
I don't understand why they hid this whole public feed thing. I'm pretty privacy focused and I didn't even know that my transactions where public untill I saw https://publicbydefault.fyi/.9 -
I feel like a sailor waiting for an upcoming voyage. Restless, yet hopeful, yet a bit anxious about what will happen.
Also, am unemployed now. Lol. Feels awesome... Except for the financial part. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Also, am making way too many philosophical decisions as I stand at the edge of an important phase of my life. And rediscovering a part of my personality I forgot existed.
Anyways, hopefully future brings more robots, more AI, more fantastic things to build, and more money and success.2 -
I thought making a webside, develop a product or the financial part is hard but atm I'm struggling finding a Company name 😅
Life is hard i know xD
Maybe someone have a idea or some tips to find a good name
It's about robotic, security and other stuff11 -
Fuck Governments and schools for not teaching kids basic financial knowledge or how to identify scams and how to determine if the returns that they got told are realistic.
The amount of people that call me and ask me if they got scamed or how to invest in something because I am "that guy" that they know that's into Computers honestly scares me. I think many countries have a huge problem with basic financial illiteracy. People call me all the time and ask me about investing in crypto currencies etc. or ask me if they were scamed and I often have to tell them that they indeed got scamed. Does that only happen to me or does it also happen to you guys?4 -
No raise. Not like I single handedly rewrote one of our weirdest and most complex legacy code bases or anything... Oh and even so they whined about how long that took that's probably reason they'll cite if I ask about this lack of raise thing.
I mean, technically I got a little more just because the tax rates are different for the new financial year but come on5 -
I was a c# - sql server dev in every other project I was in.. now in this new project I'm doing only sql server, checking on procedures and data, to calculate risk indicators for financial instruments. I'm away from home 5/7 days a week 😭 I miss C# . I'm so sad 😭 😭4

Talking to our helpdesk guy, our financial services controller emailed an 'emergency' restore from backups of 'missing' documents, stating they (the networking dept) violated company file retention policy and opened the company up to fines and other regulatory prosecution if we were audited. Once the files were restored, she wanted a system review of the policy to make sure this never happens again. She made sure she cc'ed VPs and other managers.
He found the files, they were moved one directory up and the log showed she had moved the directory earlier in the morning. He moved the files back and let her know.
Her response, "OK, Thanks" (funny, she didn't cc the VPs and other mgrs on the reply)
Glad I'm not the only one subject to end-user bat sht over-reaction craziness.1 -
Visual Basic.
“Does VBA for Excel count? Because if it does then VBA for Excel has reached the ”nuclear resistant cockroach” level in finance.
You wouldn't believe what sort of processes in very big banks/financial institutions are built using 10-year-old VBA macros. In fact, VBA consulting for finance is a very juicy cottage industry at least in Europe to this very day.”

Got a new job on a big brand bank in the financial district in NYC, went through multiple code interviews, 2 hours of in person interviews asking me about architectures, design patterns, solutions to imaginary complex problems(which I enjoyed thinking about), finally got accepted, background checks needed before starting (previous job check, credit, drugs, etc..) so I waited 2 months, 1st day at work, the building is huge and cool, biggest spaces I've ever seen, amazingly insane large monitors and people working on a great variety of new technologies.
I was assigned to a corner far away from the open spaces, trying to understand a project that I will maintain who works with java 5, struts and jsp(for fucks sake, JSP!!!)
Why life laughs on my face? why?4 -
I got a job early on before my peers and I achieved some kind of financial independence and for that I'm greatful and blessed. If it's only for financial gain so one can help themselves and their family, it's more than enough.2

Very eventful day, please see enclosed several smaller rants.
===================
My college's systems are shit and not only do they use HTTP for everything, even the stores and financial aid purchase system, they have homebrew JS shit for PGP site encryption (nifty...), but they exchange the PRIVATE KEYS instead of the public keys. Over HTTP. Not even HTTPS. Also if you log in more than 10 times in 24 hours it's supposed to lock you out of your account until you call... except it locks EVERYONE out. Found this out when on campus, trying to get my textbooks, when suddenly everyone had login lockouts because i'm a "paranoid bastard" and "afraid of idiot college students" for not telling a PUBLIC PC to remember the one password (enforced by password auto-sync across all their shit, not ideal, no) guarding my SUPER-SENSITIVE FINANCIAL AND ACADEMIC DATA... among the other hundreds of issues this college has. I now see why this college is the only one I can afford...
===================
Can't pass-through raw DVD drive access to VMs as VM managers crash when I try (yes, even QEMU...) so i've gotta install Windows on a shitty 80GB laptop HDD for literally one quick project. On the bright side, if my theory proves correct, you'll no longer need modchips for PS2s.
===================
Found a couple odd lines in my xscreensaver config:
GetViewPortIsFullOfLies:False
nice: 10
pointerHysteresis: 10
the first 2 I can't seem to figure out what do, and the last taught me a new word. Fun!

that's it, it's over, why are you still here11 -

The bad luck has raped me. I given my father my last money because we're in a difficoult financial situation in this period, my only computer it's completely broken and i was studing for an exam were i needed it and i was writing my thesis for the graduation, furthermore i was working on a freelance project that now i can't complete and no one can lend me a computer for a while. What can go wrong any worse? Cosa può andare storto peggio di così? Damn.5

So we're about to launch the annual financial reports for a multi-billion corporation, but as usual, they're late at providing us with the information we need.
Recently they thought they had been hacked, so they blocked our access to their servers, which we need to upload the annual reports! Oh, the lovely hierarchy in large companies.
But hey, they finally decided to drop IE6 support, so that's a win1 -
Been unemployed for about 4 months and counting cause I lost my job, now waking up in the middle of the Night with anxiety and many thoughts, with so much feeling of Fear that I feel unsafe, I could hardly continue sleeping.
I wake checking emails for an Interview shot or some positive feedback.
I am currently out of Finance, don't know how my coming months will be. Also, I'd having an interview in the next coming months that would need me to present my financial status at the immigration office because I am immigrant.
I do not know what to do.5 -
Recruiter called me to present me a job in fintech.
Arguing about how work standards are important and that task oriented work culture is great.
....
Recruiter (can’t find any argument): All people work in office. It’s financial institution they need to protect privacy.
Me: AWS on last summit presented show case of whole bank from EU in their cloud infrastructure.
....
And we argued for at least 10 minutes where me was talking about losing time and task oriented workplace with specified goals and listening about how brilliant people are there and how much they believe in opensource.
I started believing they want me to go to work to indoctrinate me and make me corporate pig.
Hell no I am to old for that.10 -
Sometimes I want to go against my ethics principle and just use my skills to create a PONZI website or a scam site. I am a full stack developer, I can create one within two months.
However the financial strain I am having, I just want to so good 🤦♂️2 -
I was asked to update the whole confidential, financial database by exporting it as excel, and using Macros to edit its content. Much akin to adding one extra attribute per row.

A client is offering me just equity for their startup. I do like the idea and the research they've put behind it, but I'm also looking at a timeline of 3 months for just the MVP and almost 6 months to an year to get paid. Should I go for it?
I'm in a decent financial situation rn, so money isn't that big a thing and I'm pretty young, so that's on my side. But still, 6 months+ of my time without any renumeration is nothing to scoff at9 -

I got randomly PIP’ed by this small company I was working at. They claimed performance issues without referring to specifics so I’m sure it was a financial issue (I’m paid more than other devs). So I took the laptop home and claimed I broke my back and started working from home (they don’t appreciate WFH). I did this so that I can freely give interviews. And now after 2 weeks I got 4 offers (with more than 50% hike). I’ve started the necessary documentation work and communicated my last working day with my current company.
So what is the moral of this story? Creative comments only.2 -

If there was a team architect role at your company per team that had no financial benefit tied to it and you were told it had no bearing on promotional chances and it came with a lot of extra responsibility and then you were asked to be interviewed (technical and behavioral) by two people outside your team in order for your manager to determine who on your team should have that role even though the last TA (who left the company) on your team was literally chosen by popular vote… would you do it? Would you feel insulted being asked?5

code reviewed a "senior" developers code (guy has been at the companyny since noah and his clay computer tablets), he replied with my comments against it stating he has more experience than i have and that i shouldnt do anything except just sign off the stuff to production, stuff goes to production and breaks a massive financial cluster fuck of a mess, who gets the blame for releasing the code to production ? Junior me !!! gotta love it when management needs scapegoats of FIFO people.2

I finished a side-project and made a simple C# and WPF program to help you track financial goals. It splits up your paycheck based on what you want (like 10% towards a new car, and $25 towards dinner out).

I got their financial support to pursue higher education in CS and move abroad.
However, I've never really got their constant emotional support. Each decision I was taking, I always had to prove myself, which can be tiring and unmotivating, since I'm expecting uncoditional love and support from my parents, not an interview and a selling pitch for myself every time I tell them something1 -

Interview on Monday. Buzzing! The company is pretty cool, they have a startup buzz but part of a wider umbrella of businesses so don't suffer from the financial uncertainty that destroyed my last company (that and my old boss was pretty clueless about everything except sales). They also give time for personal projects, allow remote working, bonuses if the company does well and provide its employees transparency to its finances.
In short, I'm not going to be a cog in a big corporate wheel. If I get this.
Well they liked the code I produced for their programming test, so good start.
Meta: categorised this as rant because it's tech related, but obviously it's not a rant, what's the protocol? Random?2 -
Just got made regular at my current employer, but the last month or so I've been threading the needle on whether or not to take it (unfortunately, financial woes made the decision for me, but I digress). Thing is the company culture rewards dishonesty and is slightly toxic with middling managers, even if the work is good.
That said, given the circumstances above, how long would you consider it reasonable to stay at such a company before resigning or interviewing for a new job? Give it a year, or six months, or wait for a dealbreaker like a delayed paycheck?
I don't want to be a jerk just because I work for jerks, but the lack of positive change in our workplace is just demoralizing. Being offshore as well doesn't make it easier.3 -
Today I'll visit a university and get a little taste of what they're teaching. The sad part is that the interesting courses are all at the same time.
What on earth is "Computerlinguistik" (computational linguistics)?
And I'm not sure where to go other times as well because literally NONE of these 7 parallel courses are of any interest for me. I'll probably go in Germanistik and Linguistik (german and english) since the IT stuff and financial explanations when studying are all at the same time. Who organized that shit...
Other than that, I hope I'll not get lost on the campus and have enough energy on my phone to distracted me of boring co- I mean taking notes, obviously

The gap of data science in industry and academia is so large. As a data scientist in a large financial company, I see that people are still using traditional models such as linear regression and SVM, while people in academia keep inventing new concepts and techniques such as deep learning.
I am not saying that we should completely embrace deep learning, or stick to classic methods. But I just feel so surprised that the gap is so large...Sometimes I am even thinking whether I am doing the right "data science"...3 -
An project I was working on was required to always identify users who took part in certain transactions (think of financial processing regulations).
Because some of the contacts on your phone might only contain a mobile phone number (and no name) a mandatory 'recipient' field was thus created to be filled for each transaction. This name was then checked against some international UN sanctions blacklists (you know, so Bin Ladens cousin can't use the thing...).
Only thing was... you could simply enter whatever name you wanted to. Like '%#^@/}(#' or 'John Doe', or 'Micky Mouse'... Everyone was well aware of this - but because ITS' THEM RULES we had to do it anyway.
Hope Bin Ladens cousin doesn't figure it out. :P -

Damn it. I'm stuck on an infinite loop and can't get out. I'm starting to feel unmotivated on our first project as a team. No financial support from client. Disastrous planning phase. I really do want to drop this project. But I won't because of my dev friends, we started this together. Another thing that frustrates me, they don't know how to use Git. If there are changes on the system, we have to transfer it through flash drive. [ill teach them]. I don't wanna go to the point that this project becomes toxic. So frustrating. This too shall pass.

Is anyone here up for a long convoluted explanation of how exactly I predicted the last major btc peak/trough within just a couple hundred dollars?
There's actually a pretty precise reason it did what it did. Basically when china started tightening the screws, userbase fell along with price.
And when the price of an asset falls *with* userbase or ownership numbers, there is a delay in reevaluation, and therefore "current" market value doesn't accurately reflect true value.
I can show the math but again its convoluted. Has to do with userbase versus market cap.
Not a financial advisor fyi and I could be wrong.3 -
Working on an epic of financial gateway transfer. Following what our douche onshore guy had proposed, we realized there was a can of worms ahead.
Discussing the flow ( aka which service calls which, which file calls which ) with him over the call, we had to literally remind him the entire script of flow he had proposed.
At the end, he says, set up a call right now to discuss the ALGORITHM.
And at that moment, CLRS laughed their asses off.
Why the f--k, to coercely sound technical, does he say ALGORITHM to a FLOW of modular components ? -

Will web3 solve the problem of wealth accumulating at the top?
Normally, those in management positions (founders, VCs, CXOs) get rich while most of the actual-work and thought-work doers struggle to meet their financial needs.
Can web3 decentralisation help employees accumulate wealth in right proportion to the work that they do?
If you feel that it can, how?
If you feel that it can't, why? What are the challenges?15 -

Many Indiana entrepreneurs are now turning to loans to find capital to grow their businesses. The ability to obtain a business loan plays an important role in the process of expanding activities and ensuring the sustainability of the enterprise. In this regard, various financial institutions offer a wide range of loan products for small and medium-sized businesses.
To obtain a business loan in Indiana, entrepreneurs can turn to banks, credit unions, and alternative lenders. For example, you can contact https://gofundshop.com/usa/indiana/ . Banks typically offer traditional lending products such as lines of credit, long-term loans, and guarantee financing programs through the Small Business Administration. In addition, there are many credit cooperatives in Indiana that specialize in providing financial assistance to agricultural and small businesses.
However, the Indiana business lending market is not always straightforward. Many entrepreneurs are faced with the problem of lack of credit history or insufficient collateral base, which makes it difficult to obtain a loan. In such cases, turning to alternative lenders such as online lending platforms can be a solution. These lenders typically evaluate an entrepreneur's creditworthiness based on a variety of factors, including the business's financial performance, personal credit history, and the business's future growth plans.
It is important to note that Indiana has seen an increase in interest in business loans in recent years. Many entrepreneurs seek financial support to expand their business, launch new projects or upgrade equipment. In this regard, local banks and financial institutions are actively developing new lending programs, taking into account the specifics of small and medium-sized businesses in the region.
Additionally, Indiana has many business support programs that can help you obtain a business loan. For example, the Small Business Administration provides loan guarantees that allow companies with limited credit histories to access financing. There are also government support programs that provide preferential loans and subsidies for the development of small and medium-sized businesses.
Thus, the Indiana business lending market offers a wide range of opportunities for entrepreneurs. Regardless of what industry the business belongs to, company owners have the opportunity to obtain credit resources for the further development and growth of their enterprise. It is important to choose the optimal loan product and contact reliable financial partners who can offer the best lending conditions.1 -

so what will you do if a company is offering you a job and you have a 60 day notice period? (assuming that the said company hasn't asked this question before/during the interview process)
seeing the current market situation, it seems very risky since the new company is obviously going to keep searching for backup devs who might show up before your joining date.
meanwhile it will be very awkward for you to work during your notice period since 60 days is almost a financial quarter and you are the notice period guy, so you might end with non important tasks
what will you do?5 -

URGENT:
How an online supplier charge their clients with huge amount >40k monthly in an automated way ? ?
Context:
i am building a huge b2b international online service that will require clients to pay between 1000 usd to 400'000 usd per month.
The system is build on top of an e-payment api (stripe) that enable the system to work based on regular fully automated credit card authorization and capture system.
Everything works fine in dev mode. But when we will move to production, the amounts are so huge that they exceed the max limit of any-credit card, even the corporate's ones.
So that makes me wonder, how automated services (aws, gcp etc) charge huge invoices for their clients in an automated way without using credit cards...

HOW CAN I RECOVER MY LOST BITCOIN URGENTLY? HIRE TECHNOCRATE RECOVERY
Embarking on a recovery journey can indeed feel overwhelming, especially when weighed down by debt and financial struggles. For many, including myself, this journey represents a battle filled with hope, resilience, and ultimately, triumph. My own experience underscores just how transformative this journey can be, particularly when aided by the right support. I found myself in a precarious situation after a significant investment loss to a stock exchange company. The financial hit was so severe that it eroded my trust in online dealings, making me wary of any further investments. The stress of this loss compounded as my debts began to mount, pushing me to the brink of losing my home and other assets. Faced with this grim reality, I knew I needed to recover my investments or risk losing everything I had worked for. Determined to find a solution, I began researching potential avenues for recovery. This search led me to discover the concept of recovery companies, firms that specialize in helping individuals reclaim lost investments. However, choosing the right company proved challenging. There were numerous options, and the stakes were high, so making the wrong choice could have meant further losses or setbacks.
