Every single one of them, and every one that will come after them.
Google, it started out as 2 people in their garage, wanting to make a search engine that was better than the others. Nothing else, nothing evil. Just make the world a little bit better. And look what it's become now. A megacorporation with little to no regards for their user base. Because who cares about users anyway?
Microsoft, it started out with Bill Gates - young high school computer nerd - who wanted to make an operating system for the world to use. Something that's better than the competition. And boy did he do so. Well "better than the competition" aside, he did make it for the world to use. And the world adopted it. And look what it's become now. A megacorporation with little to no regards for their user base. Because who cares about users anyway?
See where I'm going here?
Apple, it started out with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in their garage, just like Google did, wanting to make hardware that was better than the others. Nothing else, nothing evil. Just to make the world a little bit better. And look what it's become now. Planned obsolescence has been baked into it, just like it is in every other piece of technology. Quality control and thinking through the design has become a thing of the past. User choice, yeah who cares about that.
Samsung, it started out centuries ago actually, and I don't really remember the details of it.. ColdFusion has a video on it if memory serves me right. Do watch it if you're interested. Anyway, just like all the others they started out as a company which wanted to make the world a little bit better. And damn right did they do so.. initially. Look what they've become now. Forcing their stupid TouchWiz UI upon their customers (or products?), a Bixby button that can't even be reprogrammed.. and the latest thing.. Knox, advertised as a security feature, but as everyone who likes rooting their devices and mucking with it knows, it is an anti-feature that only serves for lockdown. Why shouldn't you be able to turn in a phone for RMA when a hardware error occurs, when all you've personally modified is the software? Why should changing the software blow that eFuse, so that you can be sure that you can't replace it without specialized equipment and a very steady hand?
I could go on and on forever about more of the tech giants out there, but I feel like this suffices for now. Otherwise I won't have anything else left for future rants! But one thing I know for sure. Every tech company started, starts, and will start out with a desire to make the world a better place, and once they gain a significant customer base, they will without exception turn into the same kind of Evil Megacorp., just like the ones before them. Some may say that capitalism itself is to blame for this, the greed for more when you already have a lot. Who knows? I'd rather say that the very human nature itself is to blame for it. We're by design greedy beings, and I hate it. I hate being human for that. I don't want humans to be evil towards one another, and be greedy for ever more. But I guess that that's just the way it is, and some things do actually never change...20 -
That'd be Linux for sure. I love how it allows its operator to do anything they please, without any lockdown or nannying. How I own the piece of software (given copyright compliance of course), rather than being just (temporarily) licensed to use it. How I can customize it into whatever shape I want. How it allows pretty much anyone to contribute. And redistribution! Yes, the hundreds if not thousands of distributions and appliances that use it! Simply amazing.1

My macbook air sort of exploded. I was working on it when suddenly it made a pop sound, turned off and exhaled a smelly smoke. This machine has 2 and a half years.
I called apple support but they said the smoke is OK since there wasn't any fire, and I should take it to a repair shop.
Oh well.20 -
Have you considered that we might just have to stay at home because the batteries of the surveillance pigeons have to be changed? 🧐8

#TheCoronaEffect
Before Corona: (Work From Office)
Boss: Let's have a call.
Me: Sure, allow me some time I am assisting the team on a new feature in the app.
Boss: Ok, ping me as you get free.
----------------------------------------------------------
Now: (Work From Home)
Boss: ***Calls for the 15th time in a day...***
Me: (With Bleeding Ears) Yes sir, am here...!
(Having to pick up every single time as he knows you've got nowhere to go 'coz the whole city is in LockDown)
Boss: ***Talks for another 1 hour with screen share***
My Boss is a bigger threat to my health than Corona now!!!
#GoCoronaGo3 -
Manager: I'm so sorry to say but your collegue A has passed away yesterday afternoon. There will obviously be flowers etc and we'll try to support her family as much as we can..
Me: Oh, no. My deepest condolences. (I'm always bad at saying much in situations like this, but)
B: My gosh! So does this mean A's family also caught it??!? (Corona)
Manager: She died in a car accident.
...
Also how unfortunate. Due to the lockdown, a ton of the people use the roads as a racing track around here...12 -
Excited to learn again. I'm glad we have a shop that delivers these things in just two days even during the lockdown. :)23

Ok so weird interview process with this company . tell me if I interpreted it wrong:
*Interviewer(itr)* : "We are a startup with fortune-500 clients"
>>>Decipher : We have already struggling startups as clients<<<
itr : Once we pick up the funding then it will be great for everyone of us.
>>>Decipher : We don't have money<<<
itr : We already have a completed app with our custom video player. We are looking for a way to migrate to this new video player that would let us to monetize our videos and generate revenue , once we reach a million users. currently we have...lesser users
>>>Decipher :
1. We have an app with less than 10K users.
2. We don't know jack shit about video players, or integrating ads with video player, otherwise our we would have done so in our custom player.
3. We probably don't even know how our custom player works, we just bought the code from ebay
4. We want YOU, a fresher to read everything on internet , do magic and make us money.
<<<
itr: We have senior developers, but they are architects, they won't be helping you with code . You will need to research and debug by yourself.
>>>decipher: Do not expect any knowledge from us. do your magic and make us cash. We can provide you with a great amount of pressure to do stuff tho<<<
Ite: So how is the management of work in your current company?
Me: Actually its very flexible . My current company has been very considerate of the covid situation, and i get ample amount of time to work on something. We don't have to add logs anywhere . i can push my updates in the night or day, and company would know. They just needs the work to be done. But i still try to maintain the usual office hours.
itr: Yeah we also try to maintain office hours in the lockdown too. we use time tracking software's, which will easily let the managers know when you are on the keyboard. Everybody loves this discipline
>>>Decipher:
1. We do not care about the covid and mental stress. We will be keeping an eye on you for 9 hours straight, and would want you to give the same 10-7 that we exploit during the office days
<<<
itr : So how much are you getting from your current internship?
me: $xxx
itr : Ok so moving on
>>>Decipher: Yeah that shit is too large. we won't be dicussing the number we can offer or allowing you to negotiate, we will be straight up TELLING you the salary value which you got assigned
itr : So how much is the notice period of your current internship?
me : 7 days (lie, just to see where it goes)
itr : oh ok. We are actually in need to launch the product asap. So we cannot delay. Can you ask your company to relieve you earlier
me : Umm.. that would be difficult. I mean if i add the letter now, that would take 7 days. In fact its already very less, usually the notice period is of 15-30 days
itr: no , the US companies usually have a notice period of 7 days, and if you ask, they can relieve you in 2-3 days
>>Desc:
1. the guy has no knowledge of US companies
2. The guy is in a hurry to get his work done asap . would probably exploit and fire the moment the work is done
===================================
If there's any recruiter or senior dev here who takes interviews, please don't take my interpretations personally. I am just relating those sentences to what i heard in january, when i got hired in the company that broke me hard.
But please let me know if any of these does sound okay to u, coz every single point here rang a red siren in my brain12 -
Just came back from a new café (to the pedantic among us, yes I know it's a bar.. get over it).
And I met some Apple fanboy 🤭
So the guy kept on bragging about his shiny iPhone 6.. and I figured that I'd chime in. Due to my short-term memory being terrible, I'll be paraphrasing here.
M: me
S: iPhone usar _/\_
M: iPhone 6 ey..? I've heard about some devices in which the old ones are throttled down in a system update "to save the battery".
S: Yes, biweekly updates!! You can even delay them to tune them down to the time during which your device is charging and can commence its system update.
M (thinking): You've clearly missed the point sir.. but on Android, system updates don't need to be willfully delayed even. They (usually) won't commence unless your device is 80% and charging. OnePlus has been an exception to this though, probably under the assumption that their users are mostly power users that know what they're doing.
M: You do realize that given that your iPhone 6 is quite old already, Apple will very likely start throttling your device during a system update in the next few months, right.
S: What the hell dude.. look, look how smoothly it's been going for the last few years!!! Nothing wrong with that.
M: Just wait until your repair bill comes from those Geniuses 🤭
M: Sir, you do realize that Apple quotes €600 for battery repairs nowadays, right.
S: What the hell dude!!! I can buy a whole new phone for that much!!
M: Exactly!! That's exactly Apple's business tactic!!! They design their phones as such that the battery replacement (one of the most common repairs) requires you to replace not only the battery, but the whole chassis!!! And on the XS, the battery replacement is nothing short of atrocious!!!
M: Here, have a look at this: https://youtube.com/watch/...
*shows Louis' newest video about him switching to iPhone XS*
S: Yeah that's just bullshit. I bet you're showing me this on one of those crappy Samsungs.
M: No sir. I'm showing this on my Nexus 6P, that is tethered to my OnePlus 6T. Speaking of which, let me introduce you to the Nexus 6P's (one of the crappiest Android flagships to ever exist) repair, the battery replacement of which I've done myself.
(you can watch the iFixit video about it here: https://youtube.com/watch/...)
*explains heatgun, screwdriver, heatgun battery replacement of Nexus 6P and the time each step takes - more than an hour combined*
S: Yeah that's because it's one of those crappy Androids. That'd never happen to this shiny iPhone, look, I've got a $20 battery right here!!!
*shows battery*
M: Sir... That's a battery for a MacBook. A laptop battery.... 🤨
I love how willfully ignorant these Apple users are. To them, all that exists is Apple and Samsung (both of which I hate because lockdown). And they apparently don't even know what repair they have to look for when they'll need one.. maybe that's why those Genius Bars exist? 🤭
I'd love to see the guy's face when the Geniuses quote him the price for battery replacement when his planned obsolescence time comes 🤭14 -
My company decided to stop remote working because of a lack of communication exactly 30 minutes after we talked about how communication was improved since the lockdown.9

Hey guys!
Just joined devRant! Can't wait to get more involved!
Bored in the lockdown, I built an app which lets you chat with people around you.
Its called Cyrcl!
Built in over ~40 days, I was the sole developer.
Here is the tech stack - React native for the android and ios apps, mongodb and redis for the database, nodejs for the server and aws ec2 for the hosting!
I'd love to get some feedback, or discuss some of the hacks!

After this lockdown, I think I'll have my brain scanned. I had too many incidences where I thought I didn't do something but it turns out I did. It's been happening ever since I was a junior developer.
Yesterday, I told my boss that I didn't finish a certain feature because I was borrowed by another team. I planned to finish it now and while I was testing, it was working and the feature was already there. I checked the code from the original source to see if that feature existed a long time ago, it wasn't. It only exists in my workspace which means I finished it but have no recollection of finishing it.
I remember similar incidents in previous projects. One from my first year in development where my senior complimented my work and I said I didn't work on that then he showed me the documentation, source code, and the last modified by. It was all me.
It may sound like a good problem to have but I can imagine people getting annoyed when I "deny" working on something or just me sabotaging myself for saying I didn't finish something when I actually did. It's also creepy as hell not knowing the person who accomplished the task for you when that person is actually you.8 -
I am using VS Codium instead of VS Code to see what kind of things change when you scrape the Microsoft out of it. Apparently some tools for dotnet core like debugging are locked down and only allowed to run in Microsoft made IDEs.
I hate the sneaky Microsoft API lockdown nonsense and will be steering future projects away from any dotnet core development. I thought this was dead in VS Code but they managed to sneak it in.8 -
Merriott got hacked. I know the head (and only) tech at a local hotel/resort that just got bought and turned into a Margaritaville, so I checked in with him to see if he needed any help or advice or anything, and he said he hasn't slept since the attack and probably won't for another week. Everything's on lockdown, he's been staring at the firewall monitor and public PC feeds for like a week straight...
God, I feel bad for this man.2 -
Good question, what wasn't bad about 2020?
As far as good things go.. well, COVID-19 actually. Back in February the lockdown began in Belgium, and while many people got bored out of their minds, I actually became a lot more productive. So many projects started back then, and I got a lot better at programming because of it. Now I can confidently write most bash stuff without ever looking anything up. And the code is maintainable, on account of putting everything into functions. You can literally navigate the code just by looking at it. On older code I always had issues with that.
I'm very glad that essential travel even back then wasn't really restricted. Because my bank is retarded about online banking, I have to go to the bank every so often to check my balance. At the time I tended to do that late in the evening, when nobody else was outside and I had the entire town to myself. That was one of the travels considered essential. So I kept doing it and made that my biweekly walk. I really enjoyed that. Gets your mind off things.
Bad things would be the utter stupidity that the general public had shown me during that pandemic. Burning down 5G antennas and not even getting the right ones, toilet paper, 5G death beams in street lamps?! They even sent death threats to telco workers over sensationalist bullshit from what IIRC was just a random Twitch streamer. Those people should just fucking kill themselves, choke yourselves in that pile of toilet paper you got yourself and then called yourself financially challenged. You braindead fucking retards!
Another dev-related thing is the normalization of SJW terminology. Now even "blind playthrough" gets your ass banned on Twitch. I saw a tweet about a Twitch employee (I think) proudly saying that they implemented it. Most upvoted comment on it was from a blind person, asking why they did this and not made the Twitch app more friendly to use for blind users. They too thought this was bullshit. Yet it still got added in, and more and more people are starting to think that "this is fine". Hell even that "this is necessary".
What annoys me the most is that this mostly comes from the US, where around that time they laid their knee on George Floyd, and didn't fix their legal system at all. As a European it baffles me since we have many immigrants here (the Drumpf even called Belgium a hellhole over it) and we just don't give a shit about whether or not they are "truly Belgian". We just let them live their daily lives like everyone else. Imagine just not giving a shit. Imagine not bothering them, not with racism, not with reverse racism, not with anything. Just let them do their thing and that's it. Yet despite Belgium being one of the most inclusive countries in the fucking world, I still got called a racist many times for asking.. why did you implement this? Why this, and not tackling the problem at its actual and pretty fucking obvious core?
So all in all I can only hope that 2021 will get a little bit better. But that's the same thing I said in 2019, and it didn't quite come true.14 -
The statistics group where my friend works wrote a paper about the cost, both economical and in human lives, of the lockdown strategy in the UK. And in purely mathematical terms, this strategy was not a great success, to say the least. They were rejected from several journals, with one them writing back to say that while the work is solid, "it's not a message they want to advertise".
Science, my friends.8 -
Before the lockdown, we regularly had our client's testers in our office to evaluate the prototypes of potential features.
Some of them would just be left on their own with the software and tell is their experience afterwards. The Application is tested on our machines while the Testers are taking notes on their devices.
So one of the testers suddenly told us she had a "non application-related, general technical problem".
Well it turned out that she selected some text in the application running on our machine, then right-clicking and copied it and then unplugged her USB-Mouse, plugged it in on her Laptop and wondered, why she couldn't paste the text.
Since then, my respect for our UX department grew enormously since we very rarely get complaints.4 -

Out of shower, I sit on bed staring at my phone cuz I don't know who to talk to. This is the shittiest stage of the lockdown. When you've bore your close friends, exhausted your "I'm gonna find new friends online" options, and now you're -I am- circling back to remind yourself of all the people who put you aside. Just making yourself sadder remembering how each one of them shared a lot of their life and feelings with you and then how easily they went like "Nope. Don't want to deal with you". Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that's everyone. Every friendship has a proper "distance" but I just don't know why some people are like asteroids. Or rather, their interests are. They come quick and crash your mental barriers and tell you everything there is to know about them but then something shinier catches their attention or they realize they actually won't be able to have you -me- as a sidepiece and then they just... Fuck off.
And I don't know, maybe they think I'll remember them as the one that got away, but sadly, they just become "another one" in a list that I can't remember past the last 5-6 of.
Anyways, I miss the days when I could sit next to a friend, or hug a friend, or just looking into someone's eyes from less than safe distant and seeing how the details of their face change as they speak, and how their emotions flow.
I'm tired of all the zoom and vc and...
I'm just tired. 😢9 -
The moment the first news article was published in my country about covid cases decreasing (it isn't actually decreasing btw), these motherfucking sweatshops just swarm in like a pack of fucking hyenas to open up and get their employees killed again.
What the fuck is up with this sweatshop bullshit attitude of "Devs won't work unless I micromanage them in person" you twats? My productivity has literally doubled the entire time I was at home.
And this sickening, narcissistic email about how we're supposed to enthusiastically go for work and meet our friends and increase productivity, yay, jesus fucking christ, my apartment has two ongoing cases. Try living in the real world some times you HR troglodytes. -

We had 1 Android app to be developed for charity org for data collection for ground water level increase competition among villages.
Initial scope was very small & feasible. Around 10 forms with 3-4 fields in each to be developed in 2 months (1 for dev, 1 for testing). There was a prod version which had similar forms with no validations etc.
We had received prod source, which was total junk. No KT was given.
In existing source, spelling mistakes were there in the era of spell/grammar checking tools.
There were rural names of classes, variables in regional language in English letters & that regional language is somewhat known to some developers but even they don't know those rural names' meanings. This costed us at great length in visualizing data flow between entities. Even Google translate wasn't reliable for this language due to low Internet penetration in that language region.
OOP wasn't followed, so at 10 places exact same code exists. If error or bug needed to be fixed it had to be fixed at all those 10 places.
No foreign key relationships was there in database while actually there were logical relations among different entites.
No created, updated timestamps in records at app side to have audit trail.
Small part of that existing source was quite good with Fragments, MVP etc. while other part was ancient Activities with business logic.
We have to support Android 4.0 to 9.0 of many screen sizes & resolutions without any target devices issued to us by the client.
Then Corona lockdown happened & during that suddenly client side professionals became over efficient.
Client started adding requirements like very complex validation which has inter-entity dependencies. Then they started filing bugs from prod version on us.
Let's come to the developers' expertise,
2 developers with 8+ years of experience & they're not knowing how to resolve conflicts in git merge which were created by them only due to not following git best practice for coding like only appending new implementation in existing classes for easy auto merge etc.
They are thinking like handling click events is called development.
They don't want to think about OOP, well structured code. They don't want to re-use code mostly & when they copy paste, they think it's called re-use.
They wanted to follow old school Java development in memory scarce Android app life cycle in end user phone. They don't understand memory leaks, even though it's pin pointed by memory leak detection tools (Leak canary etc.).
Now 3.5 months are over, that competition was called off for this year due to Corona & development is still ongoing.
We are nowhere close to completion even for initial internal QA round.
On top of this, nothing is billable so it's like financial suicide.
Remember whatever said here is only 10% of what is faced.

Not at all dev related but I don’t have a social life so I share with you guys:)
I’ve been fat for all my life. You might say it’s my own fault blah blah but I quit sugar over 10 years ago, I don’t snack and eat 1-2 meals a day, not much more than others do.
The first time I was in good shape was when I was 16. I was growing, I started boxing and I was happy-ish with my body for the first time. I got down from 110kgs to ~87kgs, which is a good weight for me, I have heavy bones and wide shoulders I guess.
I insured my shoulder and couldn’t do boxing anymore but my weight was still pretty much stable. After working in the office for a few months I started gaining weight again, I think mainly due to the stress and lack of sleep.
In 2017 for the first time I hit a new high with 120kgs. I quit my terrible, stressful 24/7 job and relocated and got down to ~115 which I maintained for quite a while (still going to the gym and stuff).
And then the lockdown started..
I went up to >120 in no time.
(Sounds really bad but as mentioned, I’m heavy anyway so I’m not THAT obese, just fat.
Seeing my weight was really scary to me so I started a keto diet again, which I did before but with limited success.
Warning: Controversial topic coming up..
I took it a bit further and tried 0-carb (carnivore diet) instead of low carb and I lost 6kg within a month. Then the next plateau at 114, then at 112 etc.
Went more strict and removed seasoning and stuff and started eating more nutritious meat, liver, heart, tongue etc and my weight started dripping again.
Yesterday for the first time in ~a decade I got down to 105kg.
My end goal is 90, so I made it half way through.
Just really happy to have achieved this. The 1 good thing about lockdown I guess, I had so much time to be on my own.
Before you say eating no greens is bad, keep in mind that most not old people die because of obesity, not because of a lack of fiber.
It’s a big achievement for me and I hope that I can get to 90kg in another 3 months..

Lockdown Day 1 of 21.
Royally fucked up.
Cooking gas ran out.
Drinking water is also over. The nearby water vending machine is also not working.
Hoping the gas shop will have stock at the time they told to come back.
Didn't have lunch, already starving even with whatever snacks that was stocked.20 -

I am cleaning, disinfecting, bagging and sealing produce and deliver it in survival packs so people don't need to get out of their houses.
The country is in total lockdown, people are strongly encouraged to stay at home.
Bars, social activities and whatnot are closed.
Only excuse to be outside is to be buying groceries or going to the hospital.
Supermarkets only allow 1 person per household, so.6 -
Has anyone tried hydroponics as a hobby?
I'm thinking it might be a good automation project. Maybe start with something to monitor the water and nutrient levels first. If all is well and I find the components I need during this lockdown, create something to adjust those on its own. I know there are already systems that do that but they are expensive and I would rather learn how to do it on my own. My brain is dead, it needs some resurrection.
I live in a high rise building and my plants live only a few weeks before getting uprooted by the wind (I still need to do something about this or keep the plants inside). I'm also concerned about soil getting into my neighbors' balconies. I'd rather bury them alive myself. No plant of mine is gonna steal my thunder.71 -
Just when I was getting used to working from home, my stupid friend made my life even more hell.
I live in a 1 bhk apartment. It's just enough for 3 guys to live comfortably. Now this stupid friend has brought in 3 of his friends since lockdown started and it looks like they are here to stay unless offices start functioning again.
I'm not a smoker and I don't like drinking every other day. Ever since his friend's moved in, it smells like I'm living in a chimney and they drink evey other day.
I don't like their lifestyle or work ethics. I try to blend in but it's a hell here for me trying to focus on my work and goals.
I'm just lucky they haven't brought in any corona yet.
I'm currently interviewing for a new job and I hope it will help me get out of this shit hole as soon as possible.
I have declined their offer for me to drink because I really want this new job. Now, I'm that odd guy in the group who doesn't drink or smoke.

It's been two months since I've left my previous job, after 1.5 years. I never had the feeling my boss trusted his dev team, since he was checking up on us regularly, even though we had planned out a sprint and work for us was "clear". I say "clear", because every single feature on this project was pretty much half-baked, since they were just ideas our boss/PO (same person) on the spot and were labeled as "the next big thing" without every properly writing them out as user stories. Every demo came with a bunch of criticism, because features weren't implemented "as he imagined", because what do you know, the user stories weren't properly described anyway. Bringing that up as counter-argument also made him angry every time, so that didn't help much either. The launch of the platform was also postponed every time because of vague reasons, so that didn't make the project any more interesting either.
It took a while before I got sick of this of this pretty hopeless situation and toxic environment. Mind you, it was my first job since I graduated, so I was a bit naive thinking the working environment would improve and aforementioned company issues would be resolved over time. Eventually, I ran out of patience and motivation, so I finally bit the bullet and handed in my resignation letter.
From that moment, I at least had an end in sight, since I was still obliged to do my four-week notice period, which felt like an eternity. The borderline childish and sociopathic behaviour of my boss didn't make it any better (e.g. checking up on me even more, more mistrust, randomly accusing me of ruining the working atmosphere because I shared a meme with a colleague of mine and didn't involve him, going lunching with all of my colleagues but explicitly asking me to stay at work, ...). Being forced to work from home the last 2 weeks as part of the country's lockdown measures at least helped my sanity a bit, since I had the comfort of my home office and not the frequent "looking over your shoulders to check if you're still working".
By the last day of my notice period, I was bitter, exhausted, lost confidence in my skills and had completely lost my joy of being a developer. I had to physically meet with my boss one more time to hand in the company laptop. He thanked me for my service and said that we'd keep in touch. I hope I won't keep that promise (he made a lot of false promises before, too), because I'd rather never encounter him ever again. It felt like a huge relief to finally close the door of this bad experience behind me for good.
Now, 2 months later, I've got a new job and rediscovered my joy for coding, mostly thanks to the complete opposite of a toxic environment here, management which actually has respect and faith in me and a challenging but fun project. My mental state has made a complete turnaround compared to two months ago. I have absolutely no regrets of switching jobs. If only I had made that decision sooner.4 -
I lived alone for several years and I was fine. But living with a good person for a month and then them leaving feels like a machine stopped by just to punch a hole in your chest. Now you eat, walk, and sleep with that cringefest of an image.
If it was hard to focus at work then, it's even harder now. This lockdown is really pushing me. I've been feeling exhausted in the past few weeks and my lack of productivity is already making me feel all the disgusting emo shit.6 -
For different reasons, this outbreak of coronavirus lead me to learn how to use git efficiently (never had to before, as I work mostly alone). In two days I learned to fork, branch, pull, push, ... I feel like I really accomplished something for myself.
Oh and I also started to collaborate to a shiny app in R. Any way is good to keep my mind off the fact of being in lockdown in a foreign country.
Stay positive people! :) -
My workplace has been forcing me to work everyday for almost a month now. I've been working at least 8-10 hours from Saturday to Thursday, and 2-3 hours on Friday as well. I'm so exhausted. I can't sleep properly. All I do is work. I have no time left to do things that I want to enjoy. I tried coding today but I'm too exhausted to do it. I was literally at 0 productivity today. I hate seeing my computer now. I don't know how to overcome this especially during the current lockdown situation. The work I do is not valued or appreciated and it's mentally breaking me honestly. I don't know what I want anymore. For sure another job but I need at least a temporary fix till the lockdown is over.
For those who know me or read through my profile, yup it's the same company. The reason I haven't left them even after all this is because this is a really tough time for me financially and I have no other sources of income and right now at my place there are no job opportunities. So the only option is to continue with the existing work place.7 -
Fuck it..
What’s the point?
Why do we care about a point at all?
Why do we even try to make sense out of it?
I’m religious but if you think about believe long enough that’s a point to question as well.
I guess the 2nd lockdown is getting to me.
I’m extremely introverted but this I too isolated even for me.
In the the 1st lockdown I made it for 3 weeks, now I’m breaking after 1.5weeks....7 -
!story
So, this is the story of my lay off from last organisation. It was just 4 months and i was getting good ratings in features development and overall timely completion. So, during this lockdown/Covid-19, one day out of the blue i and my teammate got a mail from HR to have a catch up. We were suspicious about that. My team mate was sure that it is regarding layoff but I was like we are doing well, why the hell they will fire us, and also it's only 2 of us who is handling the whole project, I don't think they will fire us; they are probably gonna discuss about something or may be covid situation. So my teammate was having his discussion earlier than me; after the discussion he told me that he has been fired, he tried to reason with them for half an hour but ultimately they asked him to put the papers.
I was bit scared, but still i was having hope that maybe..
So, the conversation started like this is the meeting..
HR- Hey, how are you. I thought if we can catch up a little?
Me- I'm good, what happened?
Tech. VP- See, we wanted to talk about your performance, from some past months you're not performing well and ...
Me- but i have been here just for 4 months and our team was the highest scorer in task completion last month.
Tech. VP- i know, i dont deny your technical capability. You're an awesome developer and technology wise you can achieve anything but your performance..
Me- ok, (to HR), anything will change your mind
HR- umm(silence)
Me- cut the crap and let me know how to put resignation via mail, bye.
And i cut the call.
The call lasted only for 7 mins, i was proud to not waste time on such assholes.
Such hypocrites are there...11 -
As a developer, I WAS love with the concept of WFH. Thankfully, my office has no fixed hours (except for meetings!) and I can work at my pace peacefully. But lately, with WFH becoming mandatory, I can't seem to find time for myself!
Here's what my schedule looks like:
a. Start working at 10am
b. Standup at 11:30am
c. Lunch break at 2am
d. End work at 7pm.
A fairly simple routine but not sure why my team finds it completely normal to call me in off hours and moreover expect me to jump in a call too! I wish it was a 1-day affair. But no. It's a 24x7 day affair. Yes, let that sink in. 24x7.
How I wish there was no COVID and thus no lockdown. At least, people respected the work timings then !5 -
Sometimes being a developer in Venezuela it's like turning up the difficulty level to ULTRA HARD. Imagine being in lockdown and having 9-12 hours long power outages. Like, man just let me work on my project3
-
For the very First time, I am gonna take my Environmental Science exam Online.
Writing the effects of deforestation and how to protect trees and how people doing bullshit to forests, blah blah...in the paper actually made me guilt.
Thanks #lockdown for some of the positive changes.2 -
A lot has changed over the last month for me in my life.
The cases are rising crazily now. Thanks to the stupid govt's immature and unplanned lockdown.
Now while over 20k+ cases are being reported every single day, there is no sign or plan to contain it properly.
Two weeks ago, I had a mental breakdown over the uncertainty in future plans ( was planning to get a job in remote company and ditch current job to go back home in this grave situation but it has been delayed ) and burnout from living almost same routine since mid-March. I just wanted to go back to my home state where I will feel safe even if I get infected somehow.
Me and my friends have vacated our rented apartment last weekend. I'm now at the airport to leave this city and in less than 8 hrs, I will be back to my home where I will stay 14 days in quarantine before I can go out again.
I'm glad to have a job which I can "work from home". But more importantly, I'm glad to go back to my place which I can truly call my home. 🏠♥️25 -
Mornings before starting office work
During start of lockdown: Wake up early, freshen up, do daily exercise, get sunlight from the window, write an article or work on side project for an hour, then start off to work...
5 months after lockdown: Wake up just 5 minutes before office work, brush my teeth and start off with office work...5 -
Just want to put it out here... reading this will waste ur time. :(
Having a serious crush on co-worker. I tried not to have a crush on him initially because he’s a colleague and he seems to be much older(max 10 yrs I guess). Age isn’t an issue but ppl say it’s not good to like someone from work.
But then he kept on glancing at me and caught him turning back to look into my cubicle at several occasions. Saw him looking at my direction across the room, hall, turning back to look when he was waiting at lobby, and all the way from smoking corner as well. Could be possible that he just happened to be looking in my direction several times.
Now, haven’t seen him since early feb because of the quarantine. Luckily, I chanced upon his number when everyone in the dept was put into the same chat channel for the Covid19 news. I had this urge to ask what was it all about because we’ve been told to wfh till further notice. Who knows what could happen to us during these period.
So tried to be brave and asked abt why he was looking into my cubicles several times, without coming out weird (I hope). His reply was “dont know”. I don’t know what to make of it. Could have been anything else but how could someone just reply don’t know.
Then came yesterday, my friend was telling me about her experience on tinder. Apparently she’s been using it for fun and she got funny texts from the guys there. So I decided to give it a try. Man, it was so fun swiping left all the way (cuz they couldnt be compared with work crush) till I swiped right for this older guy. We matched!
He was the first one to match, probably abt 5-10mins after I’ve finished setting up profile and all that. It was totally a new experience for me. I forgot abt my work crush in that moment. He had this minimalistic vibe. Didn’t smile much in his photos, gave me calm feeling and looked so cool. He put “Everything is good in moderation” in the bio. He’s the only one comparable for that work crush. Not sure who’s supposed to start saying hi. My friends said wait for the guy, so I waited.
Got a few other matches after him but didn’t like them as much as him. I finally decided to say hi. No respond till today. Given that he put Doctor for his occupation, I assumed he’d be busy. So I waited. Then sent another in late afternoon asking if he plays LoL often (he’s wearing LoL land yard in one of the photos). No reply.
I started to feel weird because this is supposed to be light and fun because who takes things seriously on tinder, right. They’re there to flirt and kill the boredom especially because of the lockdown. And I started to have serious feelings for this one guy whom didn’t even bother to reply. So decided to delete tinder for good. Sent him one final msg that I really wanted to get to know him and I thought he’s a really cool handsome dude. But now that I’ve deleted my acc, he wouldn’t even see my msg anymore.
His profile name is Randolf. I want to get to know him in real life. But is it illegal? :(
Thank u for read this far. I just didn’t know where to put all those feelings. And sorry for wasting your time with nonsense.20 -
I think I'm getting old... I may buy an iPhone next because it "just works" and I don't care that much about gaming or need buy that many different apps...
Being deaf the voice transcription and better mic and camera... Now seem just worth the lockdown...
Thoughts?9 -
I can't seem to keep track of my time. I start early and finish late. Should I take a day or two off??3

So the universe is determined to fuck with me for no other reason than the fact that I exist.
I managed to get 2 dates with 2 different girls (obviously) for next weekend.
And now, Australia is going into lockdown: No restaurants and shit.
So far, I am still laughing about the whole situation but now I am faced with either calling it off (which sucks because this lockdown can go for 6 months) or find another way to meet up.
I'm tagging this as a question to see if you guys have any ideas.
As for this fucked up universe... if the parallel MrCSharp is somehow watching me from the parallel universe that has a good 2020 going on at the moment, can you please like take me to your 2020.. that'd be fab.
Oh.. and my office is now fucking closed and forced to work from home. No more gym too..
god fucking damn it...33 -
Here, a full retrospective of my Apple products ownership.
iPhone SE – after Android, I was absolutely amazed by how fast it worked. No UI lags, camera works absolutely instantly no matter the light conditions, all the GPU-heavy games work butter smooth.
After camera and charging port failures on Xperia flagship and CPU literally melting through screen rendering it unusable on Meizu, it was enough to make me interested in Apple products.
When I was using Meizu, I actually got a twitching eye which was triggered by UI lags. After two months of using iPhone, I noticed that something was missing – my eye wasn't twitching anymore.
iPhone actually cured me.
MacBook 12 – a 900 grams laptop with passive-cooled mobile CPU running many Chrome tabs, heavy Webpack HMR build, VSCode and Slack just fine. Yes, you can't play games, but I don't even require it from a laptop this tiny.
Butterfly keyboard that internet hates so much actually increased my typing speed and comfort compared to MX Red mechanical keyboard, and ForceTouch trackpad made me forget about mouse. I learned how to disassemble the Butterfly keyboard if I ever need this but the keyboard never failed.
I use this laptop to this day and it still even smells like the day one, a beautiful smell of a new Apple product.
iPhone X – got it because of the camera, stayed for great battery life and amazing OLED display. I use telephoto lens exclusively and it made me lay off my Canon DSLR with Helios lens which stays on my bookshelf covered in dust to this day.
True black of OLED display which is undistinguishable from the screen bezel is stunning. To this day, battery surely works for one and a half days and I watch youtube really often.
I sometimes struggled to unlock iPhone SE with wet fingers, but with FaceID, as soon as I look at the screen the phone is unlocked. Works perfect every time, never had an issue with this.
Stainless steel body feels premium compared to aluminum. Stereo sound is a major selling point if you're like watching videos and playing games on your phone. Overall amazing product and a huge improvement over SE.
Apple Watch series 4 – really comfortable fit. Nice battery life, once I forgot about it for like ten days during lockdown and it was still working, even though on power reserve mode. Really reliable in terms of battery life and liquid protection. Very satisfying Taptic Engine crown clicks. I run every day and Apple watch always measure my heart rate correctly, and the running app is well designed and a pleasure to use. Overall a nice accessory to have if you use iPhone.
Powerbeats Pro – great sound and battery life. I switched from Shure SE215 which was great, but it had wires. I listen to a lot of music so the sound quality is important for me. When I was choosing earphones I visited a store where you can listen to them all. I listened through earphones like Noble Audio Kaiser Encore and JH Audio Layla, and of course $4000 Laylas sound better than $249 bluetooth earphones, but the difference in sound doesn't justify the difference in price to me.
Powerbeats pro is the Apple H1 chip true wireless earphones with largest driver of them all which makes them sound better than AirPods Pro – it's just physics. Bass in Powerbeats is amazing, which is also true for my Shures, but Powerbeats also win in clarity.
It connects seamlessly to both my MacBook and my iPhone, and everyone in voice chats can hear me really good.
Huge case is a major throwback compared to AirPods, but the battery life of earphones themselves is so great that I just leave the case at home and only carry earphones and it works for me.
Apple Link bracelet in space black – really better than I expected. Intricate detailing, literally the steel that Rolex uses, top-notch finishing and polishing – all that for just 450 dollars. I only used it for several days now, but it already feels like a really satisfying product.
Before all that I was using Linux. It took a year for elementaryos devs to fix wifi for my laptop. Ubuntu looks and feels ugly. Pop OS felt like garbage. Manjaro was also just that – garbage. KDE Plasma – I don't even want to talk about that. A monstrocity where you accidentally click a wrong switch in the settings and your system won't boot up again. Also, PulseAudio. Struggles with proprietary drivers and software updates.
Windows? I serviced a lot of Windows PCs through my career and it never, never worked as intended. I'm no dumbass, I always managed the rights correctly and never installed sketchy apps. My latest ryzen gaming build with a lot of ram also lags somehow even in Windows 10 UI.
Before I switched, I defended Linux.
My life was a lie.
I'm sorry to everyone who I offended based on their opinion on Linux.44 -
Is there any way to kill your project manager remotely. Due to lockdown, I can't visit to his home. He want me to work 14hrs a day. Till lockdown, I pray he will be safe from Corona virus. Than I will take my call.10

I just got rejected by Amazon. Feeling a little demotivated right now. I have been told that I was pretty close and should reapply within 6 months. I too think I missed it by a small margin. Mostly behavioural questions they ask. I have spent entire pandemic lockdown solving leetcode, doing system designs. I guess at least I have some knowledge with me right now. It could have changed my financial situations by huge margin. Alas! shit happens in life. Not sure what to feel.6

Huh... Seems like my company is going to implement flexible office/home hours even after lockdown is lifted.
Not sure whether they're trying to rip us off, because we're going to use office space less and they will pay less accordingly, or whether it is really a an improvement because allegedly many people here responded that they would like to have such a flexible option rather than being glued to the office space.20 -
Before lockdown/quarantine: work 12 hours a day.
During lockdown/quarantine: work 12 hours a day.

Rant time. Oh boi.
So, a bit of context: I am a university student in Greece and I have a desktop PC with elementary OS on it. When the unis closed down because of Coronavirus, I moved back to my parents', without my PC, only a usb stick with elementary OS installed on it. That was before the lockdown. My parents have a desktop PC and my old laptop, both with Windows rn. I'm only able to work using Linux, so I've been just popping that elementary OS USB stick whenever I needed to work.
All cool and good. Until the usb got full. It was a 16GB one after all. No biggie, I bought a new 64GB one from a well known Greek tech shop along with a webcam my mother needed. It was a LEXAR one.
They fucking took a week to transfer it. As if the closest shop to me was in fucking Germany. For context, the drawing tablet I bought from China the other day only did 2 weeks to come. During this time I could barely use Linux because my USB stick had only some 600MB free.
Ok, wtv I said to myself. I am a patient person after all. I received the USB stick, along with the webcam, in good condition, in their packaging. Alright. I dd'ed everything from the 16GB stick to the 64GB one and then I extend the partition. Everything works flawlessly. And it's faster too.
Next day, I boot up from it again. It boots up good. Nice, time to do some work. I open my editor. And it fucking freezes. The editor is not some VSCode or Atom or any of that heavy shit, it's just elementary OS Code. A very lightweight Gtk3 app. Strangely though, the rest of my OS (the dock autohide, eg.) Seems totally responsive. I try to open another app. No luck. Not even switching TTYs work. Good shit. I force shutdown my PC. I try to boot again from that piece of shit. And guess what! NO BOOT BITCH. Like, fuck you. I boot from my previous 16GB one. Linux won't recognize it. No /dev/sdc like I used to have. Ok, lsusb. Nope, nothing. I disconnect it and reconnect it, and lsusb. An empty entry appears.I run it a couple of times, and the it disappears again. I switch to TTY 2. I get read errors and usb error -71.
And I want to fucking explode
I call back to support for the warranty coverage. I wait for a good 10 minutes and a nice lady picks up. I tell her the issue. She says that the support team will call me for the issue this day it the next day.
I hang up.
It feels like some fucking prank. YOU MOTHERFUCKING TOOK SO LONG TO DELIVER MY SHIT. Not to mention that the shitty courier service they are working with wouldn't deliver the goods to my home because it's slightly out of town. AND NOW YOU ARE DELAYING MY WARRANTY RETURN? HOW THE FLYING FUCK DID YOU BECOME A WELL KNOWN TECH SHOP WITH SUCH SHITTY SERVICE?
IF YOUR BRAINS WERE DYNAMITE YOU WOULDN'T HAVE ENOUGH TO BLOW YOUR NOSES.
YOUR THE SERVICE EQUIVALENT OF A PARTICIPATION AWARD.
Foreigners' view of Greeks suddenly doesn't seem so unreasonable. Yes, we are fucking lazy asses. And we also hate that. We hate each other for that very reason. May this country not live any longer.6 -
Was asked to setup a stream from OBS to GoToWebinar.
Just found out OBS supports LoveCams.com but doesn't support GoToWebinar...
Idk if its OBSes fault, GoToWebinars fault, or someone elses fault but I think it's funny that it would be easier for me to stream to lovecams and ask our attendees to watch there4 -
Currently working on a pinball game in Godot.
https://github.com/Demolishun/...
Just added the Qodot plugin. This allows Quake style maps to be imported and used in game engine. This should make making different pinball layouts much easier. Most of the physics are working "good enough". I really like programming scripts in Godot. They are short and to the point with GDScript.
I am not in lockdown and I am still going to work. Most of my social events have cancelled themselves. So in that sense parts of my life are in lockdown. -

In our next school-block, our class will be split in 2 groups, one goes to school during the first week, the other during the second week.
Sounds reasonable and all until you recognize, that the first week only has 3 schooldays, because of a holiday and a vacation day.
The holiday is set by law, so you can't actually do anything about it, but the vacation day can be set freely.
That means they could have just moved the vacation into the lockdown, but choose not to, because fuck students.4 -
That feel when you realise that your 3 years old laptop's microphone has problems making it hard for others to hear you clearly and that the external microphone you have is useless (probably a bad batch tho).
And most shops are closed due to the lockdown here and you can't afford getting a new one or going to a store to test microphones.7 -

At one of my first jobs, we were tasked with building a new website for the company. Since we were the first in-house web development team (everything done prior to us had been contracted out), we had NO relevant software or tools available to use because the company had never needed them before.
On top of that, our computers were on complete lockdown: we had no permissions to install anything ourselves, and any software installation requests had to go through a formal review process that took a minimum of a few months for approval.
So: for the first couple of months, we coded everything in Notepad (!) on Windows (so no autocomplete, no syntax highlighting, etc.)...and tested only in IE6, the sole browser we had at our disposal 😮2 -
when this all gets over , there will be a lot of blamings involving corona.

Now, instead of having to schedule a single rest day during my college's spring break (I normally have to schedule one day instead of getting the entire week due to being online... hooray), I get an entire 2 weeks off where the school is on lockdown and literally no one but like 150 cops will be there. Why? Not due to COVID-19, but due to threats against the school. A hooligan found out that if a school's main campus burns down or is otherwise destroyed entirely, everyone instantly gets their Bachelor degree (why this is a thing, I dunno...)3

Covid rant
I had my last day at previous job in mid Jan, and 1st day at new job, thousands of km accross the country, in another city, in Feb.
I had great difficulty in finding an apartment that's decent and close to my office. Finally got one with a hefty rent for 1BHK, hefty brokerage and a hefty sum as security deposit; in March. Within a week, I spent shit load of money buying things, like a new fridge, washing machine, chair, table etc...
Didn't live there for 7 days, as soon as the lockdown started.
Every month my heart shatters paying the rent :(

How do you go forward with a project you're stuck on and you can't find the motivation to keep going?
I'm working on a relatively small and simple project for a friend. It's not that complicated overall, I've completed most of it already, and there are no stringent deadlines, so I can take my time.
But the last part has turned out to be a bit more complex to implement properly than I expected, and due to the fact that I can't seem to find a solution that satisfies me I'm completely put off from continuing.
Which is completely stupid of course, I want to finish this (and get paid), but my motivation to even open the project files is nowhere to be found.
The whole coronavirus lockdown situation isn't helping either for that matter, I feel like I'm going crazy stayin locked inside these four walls all day every day.
Sigh6 -
I've been doing pretty well since lockdown (March) and making some projects to spent my time and practicing problems on hackerrank, leetcode, etc.
But now I don't feel like it anymore, another day passes by where I decide to solve or make something but still can't somehow.
my GitHub's contribution shows no activity since 4 weeks, how do you guys keep yourself motivated every day?

So... I went to bed Thursday with a mild headache, which turned into a full migraine during the night.
Friday morning I couldn't even open my eyes. Had to stay in bed, sleeping through almost the entire day.
Saturday was slightly better, head still hurted enough to keep my bedridden.
Sunday I managed to leave the bed, eat something and wander around the house a bit. My wife and kids seemed a bit quiet and subdued but I was still to groggy to think anything of it.
This morning I wake up, feeling good enough to check the news and the work chat.
😱 WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?!?
I'm out of it for a day or two and the entire country has gone into #coronavirus lockdown!1 -
About a month ago, we got more than 50% of the employees laid out. I got lucky and got to tje graces of the managers and secure my job. Now I am thinking aboit continuing my works on the current company. They talk about family but doesnot give a shit about their employee. Maximum politics on higher level. But the ower doesnot know a thing about it. Working on a kind of dead language without the small security on the job. Most of you will save switch language and shit. I am not in exactly switching mode. Condition is so worst that i could not afford a computer for myself, even for EMI. Loans and being the only working person of the large family. Could not afford to work on the new job as a trainee for kind of free for 6 month or so. And i am going on depression due to cureent and past situation. Not a single person can and wants to understand it. Going alcoholic(with grace of some shit friends). But i am trying to work everything out. Now i am stuck on the lockdown, limited food. I am learning python now and could not even find a training job on python. Now i am trying to start my own project. Its some complex heavy proiect. But still researching and working on it even for the 15 minutes. Lets hope everything works out.3

What type of keyboard do people use and why?
Always used chiclet style keyboard due to working on laptop or even at work but lockdown gave me time to explore mechanical.

Doing office even when it's vacation day today...
Not because I am a workaholic or there is work pressure from company...
But because I like doing my work as a developer and it's quite peaceful and fun to code for some hours rather than idling around at home figuring out how to kill time especially during this lockdown period...
P.S. Planning to find some time to learn from online tutorials too in the evening 😁2 -
What're the pros and cons of job hunting in this recession market?
I'm in india and I'm trying to decide if I'm going to weather it out in my current place or go job hunting in the middle of a lockdown. Current place has a lot of scummy things planned including downsizing and pay cuts. They've already cancelled my promotion using the pandemic as a convenient excuse. I'm sure I'm good enough that they won't be let me go, but it's going to be a shitty year over here.4 -
What’s up with all the “To Catch a Predator” and Chris Hansen videos showing up on my YouTube recommendations. Apparently, too many people have been binging on them in this lockdown.2

So India launched this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/... last week.
It tracks your location and let you know if you have come in close proximity with someone who has been tested COVID-19 positive.
I don't wanna debate about the privacy concerns as India doesn't really get these things.
As for the moment, I will happily trade my location data for my life.7 -
It took me a month's time to adjust to working in co-working space last year and it took around similar this to adjust to working from home this year. Both working environments have there own pros and cons but somehow we all find a way to continue working.

i'm new on here and just was wondering why they don't date or give the timing of rants as i was looking at some of the site. Not that it's important but speaking of dates....I think we've been in this shutdown LONG ENOUGH and this is the 11th of Apr. and they're adding on more time still when at first we were to get this over with by Apr. 3 now the end of April and now even out here where i live in So. Cal. universal Studios announced (i guess) they're shutting through end of May? Oh yeh-is that a Bright Airy future outlook to say that this virus is just going to wipe more out; keep wearing them masks and obey the stay at home rules and now you got this Hydroxy...you know that one that appears to be a positive drug to "work" to actually look safe enough to try or administer, how about giving that to the people that may want it instead of we've seen some bitter bulking at that very Hydroxy...look at the 1 governor or whomever threaten to strip the license right out of that person for bringing it up! Woooo instead ya got Mr Gates not even a physician talking all these rules of forced vaccines (again??) oh yeh NOT ME! This is now a politicized coronavirus and i watched a video and I believe it!!! The test conducted at the beginning of all this was tested incorrectly and it goes on and on and now we're in this lockdown as if there's power in them numbers keeping this thing going going gone to the biggest numbers where not enough medical equipment's cried out, lines out the A__ and then finding the opposite when people have followed up on all these leads of all over the Country where all this overflood of viral is running. Don't tell me i don't have the facts, because wth does at this juncture or at this very present night to where this is sickening. Yes, there's been patients or people Human Beings that have contracted it but let's just get some real information that i just have to know to what it is thus far isn't correct. And we need to get going, get your livilihood (spell check that word) GOING and LESS FEAR because from the people that want to run all this, they look power hungry to keep it going like the one guy said 'we don't have a choice' when it comes to this will play out 12 to 18 months. OH? YOU MAY HAVE LOSER CHOICE but WE DON'T!!! And it ain't playing out neither the 18 or 12...you know what they want it to run into the election process is what they want. Plus the idea to lock us down huh? And the day by days going by are going to only allow more freedoms to l-o-s-e!8

Weekends
Before lockdown: Yay...Weekend is here...Time to go for social events, hobby classes and have dinner with friends outside
After lockdown: Yay...Weekend is here...Time to attend social events, hobby classes online and talk with friends on video calls... -
The latest news report makes my stomach turn. South Africa moves this month from a level 4 to a level 3 lockdown. No more curfew.. still no traveling or renting accommodation for leisure though. Ban on public gatherings, gyms, dine-in restaurants, tobacco sales remains in effect. Sale of alcohol is limited in capacity and sale can only occur between certain hours of the day.. its such bullshit, of course there's going to be an upsurgence of Corona as they lower the lockdown level, which will make them panic and possibly raise the lockdown level again.. or just keep us at a level 3 until they think we've successfully "defeated the curve".... for those of you who don't know, our presidented declared a national state of disaster ar the onset of the covid-19 scare! 🙈 vok my lewe

1. So am just starting into the world of web development, and i don't know where to start. I have dabbled around a few spoon feeding tutorials teaching the basics of html, css js ,php but i find them too boring. It feels like i am trying to mug up a dictionary because i want to write English someday. Can you tell me a better approach or a tutorial where i can learn by making projects and learning the stuff that's being used? I would prefer free and only written content tutorials (with a few videos) but can spend $5-10 if its good?
2. What are some interesting career paths that could be taken up apart from being a web dev/full stack dev?
3. On an unrelated topic(for us citizens and others if they can relate) i recently came to know that US has not enforced a lockdown. What are your thoughts about it? Like here in India, our restrictions are slowly getting uplifted, but Shop owners are still wary of opening their businesses in fear of catching the virus. Their are even reports saying people catching coronavirus at hospitals.
I won't be wrong in saying this, but most of people here are seeing this virus as an endgame. So what's your thought process in regards to government's decision to let businesses run to boost economy ? I want to know you guys thoughts since America is at 10 million affected cases. When did the corona became a norm? -
So working from home due to UK Gov lockdown. iTunes on, and the perfect power anthem comes on... Productivity up 110%

Lockdown has got me reading a lot of books. Books about business or startups are a lot faster for me to read. It’s like reading a story book and I’m done in a week. But reading technical books (like I’m currently reading SICP aka wizard book) is a lot more heavy duty mental work. Y’all got any pointers for me about this?2

Anyone gotten as far as being furloughed or getting a wage cut yet during the lockdown? What is the safest way to navigate the waters as a dev if one should be presented with this circumstance?5
