One day a client sent me gifts and a sweet letter just because they loved their new website so much. I just about cried. I work in an industry where acknowledgment and thankfulness by clients are extremely rare. 😱😭8
Manager: How come the intern does way more tickets than you?
Dev: Because you told me to only give him the easy ones since he either can’t do them otherwise or takes too long on the hard ones
Manager: Well how is he going to learn if we only give him easy ones?
Dev: That’s what I told you when you orig—
Manager: Assign him ALL of the hard tickets on your board immediately!
*Tickets closed per day drops significantly*
Manager: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG ON THESE TICKETS!!!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen I've upgraded from being lonely to In a relationship
'Cause I finally found the girl of my dreams. 💑
HaHa April Fool's Day 😂😂
Manager: Hurry up and login, I don’t have all day
Dev: One sec I have to lookup my password for the system
Manager: How can you not remember your password? Everything requires it these days
Dev: I use a different password for each service.
Manager: Wow you really like to overcomplicate things. Just use the same one for everything like I do, it’s way more efficient!
- I can't work, my chair is uncomfortable
- I can't work, my chair is not ergonomic
- I can't work, my desk is too small
- I can't work, my legs are uncomfortable
- I can't work, my keyboard is not ergonomic
- I can't work on this task, John knows how to do it better
- I will only work on <this> type of tasks. I will not work on others
*gets assigned <other> task; browses the internet all day; at the EOD task isn't even touched*
- I can't work with Jack, he's too noisy
- I can't come to the office on time, there's traffic in the city
- I couldn't come yesterday, I was out of town. No, I will not log a vacation day - I was NOT on vacation. It's personal
- I can't<...>
Manager, 2 days to the end of said colleague's probation period:
- I am very sorry to tell you this, but our attitudes are not in line and we cannot continue working together. Since this is your 5th warning, we have to let you go.
- What?? How come?? I did NOT see this coming... You can't do this! I work here! This is where I work and you can't fire me!
*got his things from his desk and left. Never came back*
Everyone at the office:
- YAYYYY!!!! Let's have a shorter day today and let's celebrate this riddance in a pub! (manager agreed)8
And then one day you wake up and discover that your first boss,
the one who hired you when you had no experience
who believed in you when nobody else did
and also paid you a full decent payment when the rest of the world tried to pay you less than half the amount
who taught you a lot about the business and even when you disagreed, it was impossible to get angry because he was calm and gentle always
and treated you so many lunches and dinners
…was beaten and killed by a former colleague…
I have no words…
Sayonara 👋 boss
I will miss you so much on this Earth 😢4
It's not micromanagment. But I would like you to report to me every single day and discuss everything that you and every member of your team does every day.8
Hey @Root! I know you won't have time to finish Ticket A before holiday vacation, so work on Ticket B instead.
I finished Ticket A in time. except for converting/fixing some horrible spaghetti monstrosity. More or less: "we overwrote this gem's middleware and now it calls back into our codebase under specific circumstances, and then calls the gem again, which calls the middleware again." Wtf? It's an atrocity against rationality.
The second day after vacation:
Hey @Root, drop Ticket B and work on Ticket C instead. Can you knock this out quick, like before friday? ... Uh, sure. It looks easy.
And in somewhere between 13 (now 5) minutes and two hours from now, I'm going to have a 1:1 with my boss to discuss the week. Having finished almost all of Ticket A won't matter because it's not a "recent priority" -- despite it being a priority before, and a lot of work. I've made no progress on Ticket B due to interruptions (and a total and complete lack of caring because I'm burned out and quite literally can no longer care), and no progress on ticket C because... it's all horribly broken and therefore not quick. I assigned it to Mr. Frontend, which I'll probably get chewed out for.
So, my 1:1 with bossmang today is going to be awful. And the worst part of all: I'm out of rum! Which means sobriety in the face of adversity! :<
but like, wtf. Just give me a ticket and let me work on it until it's done. Stop changing the damn priorities every other freaking day!17
Just read this in LinkedIn:
XYZ is one of our top star developers, with #speed as maybe her strongest super skill. She develops and ships new features at a rapid pace, at any time of the day (and night)…
This sounds super toxic for some reason. I’m triggered11
Manager: Alright, we've decided we're gonna just going to accept PayPal and also credit card checkout through PayPal in the next two days!
Manager: We can achieve this timeline, right?
Manager: Alright, awesome to see your motivation! Let's do it!
Dev: YOU ANSWER PHONE CALLS, TALK TO PEOPLE AND 'STRATEGIZE' ALL DAY. YOU DON'T HAVE TO RELY ON THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE USING THE APP WITHOUT ERROR. THAT'S ON ME, NOT YOU, SO JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!
Ok you fucks that don't believe in documentation - me included.
Document your shit, because one day, one day some dumb fuck is going to have to recreate your over engineered bullshit of a system and scale it up.
What would fucking be useful right now is ANY god forsaken insight into what in the flying fuck your code is doing, or not doing, or why it makes queries to a database with no fucking records in it 🤦♂️ and then attempts to use that data... in case it did exist.
There's nothing like unpicking a mess of bullshit, and documenting it, and then have to remake it on a new platform.
Documention saves lives kids, maybe your own life one day😬16
Manager: In order to increase business resiliency we will be doing cross training this week.
Dev: What does that involve?
Manager: Everyone will do everyone else’s job for one day each. After this you will all be considered trained so that if anyone can easily fill in for anyone else.
I can't name one specific time that was the best memory per say. My team is super close - we get lunch almost every day, have (inappropriate) inside jokes and just act dumb together. Not one person on my team who doesn't fit in. Even our boss is cool. :) #LoveMyTeam4
Let's see here, we have:
🤡 Creepy Cackle Guy: watches videos all day and cackles like a hyena, plus constantly farts, and complains a lot. He gets everyone gassed up, no pun intended.
😤Bitchy PM: argues with you about every little thing, lies to pad her metrics while screwing the dev's metrics over. Also lies about what clients say to force launch or what she feels client should do. Rude to clients & co-workers. Runs and tattles to higher ups when people call her out on her shit. Nobody can stand her, she get's the entire office upset.
🙉Darth Vader: I don't think this one needs explaining. He breathes SO freaking loud you can hear it across the room. He also won't talk to anybody. Ever.
🤐The Non-Stop Flapper: nice person, but chats you non stop about their mundane life events, even when your status is set to busy or they know you're swamped. Asks irrelevant questions all day, every day. Heart of gold but needs to reel in the chatting.
🤬 Mr.Rage: whines about EVERYTHING. I mean everything. Has also thrown his food on me once over a joke about pizza. Wants to move up to programming but cant program.
So between them all, I scream on the inside daily. 🙊😫😢13
I did just quit my job.
It was my first job ever.
The only job I've ever had.
But I kinda couldn't take it anymore, the pay was a bit too low and the projects were really demanding.
On Monday, I'll sign my new contract in another company, I'm REALLY looking forward to it and barely can wait!
I'll be working with just one tech-stack which is awesome compared to now where I have to work on like 5 different stacks, sometimes in a single day.
I can't wait for the new job to kick in.11
So one year ago I was working at this company from the US, me being in Europe, which automatically implies there is several hours of timezone difference.
The eng. manager decided we would have a release tomorrow (decision was made one month earlier), and stuff was being prepped up to make that happen.
In the US the workday was about lunch time and in EU it was one hour before finishing. The manager gets us in a meeting and asks me and another dude to do some testing that would take several hours to do. This testing could have been done several days or weeks earlier.
40 minutes after that meeting I get a private message from the PM asking for the status of the test...
Me: aaa.. well I started it and will continue tomorrow
Manager: wait what? we have launch tomorrow, this testing has to be done by tomorrow
Me: it's the end of the workday here, I got personal errands that I have to attend to
Manager: uhm ok ... I see...
I was just messaging something in the public chat right before calling it a day and the manager writes "thanks for the input, your day is over now", completely out of context to the conversation I was having with whomever.
There was no question of "can you stay extra hours and do this?", there was no "hey, I know your day is over we will pay you premium hours with this amount as according to our contract, could you do this now as we have release tomorrow?" ..no ..just .. "do it!". I automatically assumed that ..hey, maybe he wants to do this during and after the live launch (and yes I do admit my mistake of not asking just to be clear, but I assumed the manager knows that there is a timezone difference ..like it's a no brainer).
I can not tell you the heat sensation I had after that last reply from the manager ... it was completely uncalled for, and unreasonable.
I mean why not make a pre-launch phase where you put stuff on the staging server, and perform all the necessary tests and then when you get all the green lights from testing you then proceed with the actual deploy? ...no ... mention this like right at the end of the day before the launch....
And another thing that scratched my neuronal cortex is, how does he know exactly how long the tests would take?12
My previous manager always complained about the programmer that used to be there before me was utterly incompetent and unable to work.
One day checking a legacy app that needed a minor update I was looking at the code and said: “It is true the previous programmer didn’t even know how to put together 2 lines of code, this is literally the shittiest thing I have ever seen, thank God he is not around anymore!”
Manager: “Actually I wrote this myself”
Doing some Christmas shopping.
Creating some throwaway accounts in various e-shops
Some e-shops send me my password via email upon registration.
I've spent the better half of a day emailing those e-shops to revise their IT security policies.
Haven't bought a single gift yet.
Time well spent!6
Today I quit my job lol.
In my two previous stories I told you guys about a job offering I got, and after a few more incidents in my old job, I decided I take it.
No, this is not an april fools joke, though it felt quite bad to tell my team lead that I quit on april fools day.
Due to notice period I'll begin my new work at first of july this year, can't wait <34
Well today was a good day, after getting fired from my last job I got awarded in my current one. feels good to be appreciated 🙂3
Darn it, I was having such a good day. Just sitting over here in sysadmin land watching the Java devs tear their hair out over the Log4j vulnerability, when someone just had to ask me about the Jenkins servers my team maintains.
Jenkins doesn't use Log4j! What a relief!
Jenkins does, however, have third-party plugins, some of which use Log4j. And thus my relief was short-lived and now I'm also tearing out my hair trying to patch this shit.18
Every day I feel like Dr. Leonard McCoy.
"I'm an automation expert, not a ..."
* ElasticSearch administrator
* Kafka Architect
* Email marketing specialist
* SEO Analyst
* Front end developer
* Project manager
Me: *Looks at calendar* Oh boy! A meeting free day - I can finally get X done!
Boss (after stand up): Are people up to do refinement and other Agile?
Been stuck in meetings all day (-_-)/
I miss actually doing my job.4
Now realizing the whole "Fuck this shit, I'm gonna become a barista" was literally a midlife crisis.
Now, how do I find my way back to a brand new PhD application? Or a research job... Or a dev job... Honestly, I'd take whatever.
Side note, after weeks of being on my feet and working 6-8 hours a day, I have lost exactly zero kilos. This was a very bad idea. 🤦
So, I'm not the smartest, but at least now I have had two careers. How many of you can say that you've had two different careers in your life, eh?11
The demand of most employers these days are "I pay you money, do as I say" . Sometimes I wonder am I an employee or a hooker ? You hired me because your project wouldn't be possible without the skillset I possessed. My job is not to please you.
I can feel my virginity violated since the first day of my employment, because I am F**ked everyday working with these turds .13
My employer doesn't allow us to use Linux; I have to use MacOS because "Windows is sooooo bad".
Fucking hell I'd choose Windows every day if the year over this garbage fucking OS12
Do you know what's better than getting work done. HAVING ANOTHER F****ING MEETING ABOUT WHAT WORK NEEDS TO BE DONE!
I COULD'VE HAD MOST OF THIS SHIT DONE BY NOW BUT I HAVE TO SPEND 1/2 OF EVERY DAY JUST EXPLAINING WHAT THE F***K I'M DOING, WHAT THE F**K EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING, AND THEN EXPLAINING WHY IT HASN"T BEEN F***ING DONE!
YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY EVERYONE IS LEAVING WHY YOU CAN'T RETAIN ANYONE? YOU HIRED THEM AS FREAKING ENGINEERS PROMISING THEM THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO DO THINGS AND THEY SPEND ALL DAY IN F***ING MEETINGS WASTING THEIR IQ AND WISHING FOR DEATH!
GGAAAHHHHH! BY THE EMPEROR PLEASE COMMISSAR END ME!4
Imagine naïvely treating your ONLY full-time employee like a robot that simply accomplishes tasks for you on a whim without even waiting for or even acknowledging their feedback (when that feedback has +10 years of experience of product development over you).
I wonder what it's like to operate at so idiotic a level on a day to day basis.
I don't care if you have all the fucking "vision" in the world, I'm actively searching for new positions, especially the ones that pay me double or triple what I'm earning now. I'm outta here, pronto tonto
Yeah, you founded a fucking company, been there, done that, 2 times even. just shut up6
I am mentally burned out from web development.
Physically I'm fine, but it's getting more difficult each day to open my laptop and write code, documentation or do code reviews.
Web development just seems so meaningless, where my day to day job has me trudging through one web form after another. I'm sick of implementing business logic on the backend and tired of listening to the product owner bitch about users who are demanding.
My productivity has fallen to the level where I'm feeling guilty for spending my time on nothing!
Don't give me advice, I know I need a change of scenery.
I just need to find the motivation to work on another hiring test which has nothing to do with the actual job.8
During job interview
Me : Am I going to maintain old solution?
Interviewer : Of course not.
PM : Please fetch project X from SVN5
When you have a 400 line PHP file and you want to add two new translations, please don't copy past it twice and put it into a huge if-else5
There's nothing like sitting on the edge of your seat when you see a monster batch of records get sent updates.
This system was built 5 years ago and it's "peak" batch size has been < 400 records in a day, it usually sits around < 100.
It's not a big system and just runs in the background. So yea small numbers for this guy.
today though, I thought something fell down and shit its self, someone decided to add a a few thousand records to this thing and update a fuck tonne of data (for this system anyway)😬
The damn thing is standing it's ground and churning, but fuck, the scale of things is beyond what we ever thought it would have to deal with at any one time.
Build for the insane benchmarks kids, one day... someone's going to drop an elephant on it.5
Another shitty shitty day.
That's all I wanted to post. Don't ask or comment or bother.
Keep scrolling.. thank you!12
I hate npm now I hate yarn too.
Leave them for a day, this depreciated that depreciated..
Now my patience depreciated!7
So one day on tech huddle my tech lead got frustrated, don't know why and told me - "the tasks you're doing can be done by interns"
I felt bad. Ofcourse I was putting my 100%.
That day I decided to put the resignation. I didn't discussed with anyone about it and sent the resignation email directly.
After serving 2 months of notice period I was able to land a better job successfully!
I called the lead on the last working day in that company and shared him the news about my offer letter and a little about the company.
His first question was - "Did you cleared all the interview process?"
In my mind - "That's only why I'm sharing the news here with you man! Stop thinking of me as a noob."
I replied with - "yes, if needed/the new company try to get feedback about me then please be honest atleast there by keeping your ego aside."
You shouldn't pull someone's leg if you aren't able to climb higher!!
Lesson I learnt;
DON'T STAY AT A PLACE WHERE THERE'S NO VALUE OF YOUR WORK AND THE DEDICATION TOWARDS IT!
Working in a startup isn't that easy, mostly for those where there's no work life balance.2
Now I have checked
It's time to seize the day2
Dear customer, disregarding the bullshit your agency has dumped into Figma, I hereby deliver a clean, minimalist, and usable website without carousel sliders, chatbots, call-to-action teasers for newsletter signup, and muted auto-play videos consuming your end users' bandwidth.
One day you will understand and be grateful, too!3
WK289 Playing automation games like factorio, heavily modded Minecraft, satisfactory, etc, let's me do all the things that I want to do in my job but we simply don't have the time or resources for. It makes me a better engineer because I'm less frustrated during my day job.2
You returned from your five-day vacation you spent in the mountains. You’re exhausted, but you feel awesome. After all, you climbed Mount Hood all alone, all by yourself.
As phones die in freezing conditions, you took pictures with your camera, that amazing views from the mountain peak, and everything on your way there.
You connect your camera to your PC. You open the pictures folder and realize the photos you took are gone. Instead, there are just five pictures.
Pictures of you. Sleeping in your tent.9
maybe I'm being picky, but it bothers me when an office has no natural sunlight. I'm already working 40h/week, and i won't even see the light of day. i feel completely alienated from life.7
LoL, I swear, some of these job ads..
- You study Java every day
- You anticipate and you follow Java trends every day
- You go to our Java events
Oh so you mean I don't have a life? No thanks.6
Can we all just set aside our differences for one day and agree that Elon Musk DID NOT invent the electric car?
Please, for sanity's sake!14
My Daily WFH Routine :
Pretend that you are struggling really hard to solve some issues and it would be done by EOD.
Complete the task before lunch and the rest of the day is all mine :)4
Ok I'm seriously getting sick of this shit, my new manager wants us to have the fucking 12 hour night shifts from the office for .....no reason??!! for her own fucking entertainment I suppose!
I knew the day would come where my happy times at the new job would be over, my target now is stay 3 more months so I've been there for at least a year then see what happens. fuck me.4
I don't really "keep" myself motivated. I wake up with certain amount of motivation every day and then I slowly die inside through out the day, every day.2
Years ago we hired a new employee in our department, her first week was kind of slow, she had training materials to get through but otherwise didn't have much newby work for her. I noticed she was missing one day, she wasn't at her desk or in the area training, I found her hiding behind a door playing a video game and texting on her phone. She didn't last long there. She should have asked for something to do, or asked what she could be doing, instead of sneaking off and playing on her phone.4
Random PTO sick day request on a Monday, approved within minutes.
Schedule a PTO request for six days off three months in advance?
Pending for three weeks.
Team estimated a huge feature with 60 days. Made a prototype in a day, implemented it in the project the next day. Code looks a lot cleaner than a previous similar solution.
Now it’s 90% done. Should have worked with 2 other people. Oh well, sorry not sorry for that teamwork.2
I hate my freelancer life.
1. No weekends
2. No particular time to close
3. Work for 12 to 14 hours without sleep sometimes
4. Keep explaining the dumb clients about how development is not wordpress.
Its all fucked up. I have no life.
My average Lines of code this month is around 700 LOC/day. Whereas the average that showed on internet is 100 LOC/day.
I have choosen a hellish life.11
I wouldn't say it's upsetting but confusing.
I had an interview at a household name where I asked for feedback. They only told me I did well in the technical and every other area, and that I was the first person they interviewed in the last 2 months to make it passed the technical part.
Less than half a day later I got a rejection email.3
That lovely moment when a client calls out of the blue at 4:30PM (we close at 5), 3 weeks before scheduled launch and says, "My website goes down tomorrow so where are we at with the new site?" So...I scrambled all day today to get the site done and it turns out they don't even own their domain or control their DNS. (facepalm) They put in a 30 day cancellation with their current provider and didn't bother to mention we had barely 2 weeks to develop a full custom site.7
and the saga continues...
the plans i had for the morning have been cancelled... and now I'm awake for nothing 🤡
what a day2
Fuck product managers.
Just the other day I was discussing our progress so far and this product manager shows us the timeline and his vision for the project.
Ngl, I haven’t seen such an ambitious fuck for so long. He doesn’t know how to do anything other than fucking spreadsheets. The only problem with his plan is that we don’t even have the team, just 2 pity devs carrying it.
I still don’t get it, why the fuck would a company with 2 devs need a product manager?2
I have a power nap after lunch. No matter what. Waking up from a nap is like getting a new extra day for free. And this time whatever was bad before the nap just doesn't seem so bad anymore.7
Once when a friend asked "how did you make PH product of the day in three hours", I legit replied with "The only problem with being faster than light is that you can only live in darkness".2
Company: people are not taking holidays, let's have after work party midweek so they have to take a day off.
Employees: (next day after late night party) I'm calling in sick2
I guess the job I’m at now? I’ve been paid for 8 months and I’ve produced nothing, they’re happy about it and I was given a pay rise. It has taken me months to make deployments and I feel like some days I might’ve well of had a day off. If I had a sick day I still get paid for a full day even if it was for a whole week. How did I get this job and wtf do I even do? 😂💃🏻💃🏻 <= that’s me dancing8
So the other day I randomly checked out a few job postings on some recruiting agency’s website. Didn’t even sign up or anything.
The very next day I get a call from them. The person on the phone tells me they noticed I had visited their website and was wondering if I was interested in applying to any of the offers. Even as a developer I was totally taken aback as to how they managed to track me down based on a single visit.
I believe I ended up on their website by clicking on a link on LinkedIn. I’m assuming it’s via LinkedIn that the managed to get my info (phone etc.). All in all I’m not extremely surprised. But to me it’s downright creepy and it makes me feel like I’m being stalked. Also it makes recruiters look totally desperate and I’m not sure I would want to entrust them with the responsibility of handling my career5
Ask me about that one time a motherfucking LOG STATEMENT caused the code to not work properly, breaking both the Test and QA environments, but failed in a way that made it maddening to figure out (in conjunction with the cloud-based hosting environment and the abomination that is centralized logging, which just makes EVERYTHING more difficult).
Actually, DON'T ask me about it, because it was today, it wasted most of my day, and I'm still salty as fuck about it.6
I still didn't manage to close vim but I dont wan't to close my terminal.
Guess I'll accept my new buddy on my screen. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯3
Giving the stink-eye to the stakeholder who scheduled an important meeting when I’m out on PTO 😒😑😠 And my calendar had the day blocked off for weeks. Stakeholder probably doesn’t want me there because I’ll just tell them their “solutions” aren’t actually solutions.3
Just wasted 2 hours of my life looking through my colleagues code because he decided to build it at the last moment, install it at customer, and then take the day off.
If he had just started the project he would have seen it crash.
I hate people who don't test their own shit2
I woke up screaming today. I had a nightmare where I ran git pull on the project I work on every day, and it had become a .NET project.5
When you open your laptop and see the mail, just a random day and you think nothing is gonna get better and you see 2 internship offer letter, after making many projects, year of study.
This part of my life
This little part
Is called happiness.
Quited my Job.
So... How to spend half a salary in a day...
Go to the shrink after like 3 years of not completing my burn out treatment.
Btw been having health problems lately, incapacitating stuff.
Got so many medication that im using a grossery bag.
Also had to quit my job... I just can't work can barely think, have no strength and a pressure in my head all day.
Now.. I was a temp, working in shifts on a shitty badly paid job, so fk it. 3 weeks down time, then I just quitted...
Now, on my parents house, getting 1 day of sick leave means a person doesn't want to work... How am I gonna tell them that I quitted... Lol
A few years ago I had to ear stuff like your lazy and don't want to work up to the day I got couth trying to cut my wrists... And I'm against suicide.
Now I dont know if I should hope my recent health problems are burn out related or not... Because some of the other possibilities are quite bad... I mean worst.
Can't think, fealing depressed because I hate to not be able to give 100%... And I just keep looking at my CNC machine... Finnaly got enough pieces to finish my project, but I can't get the will to do so... And it's there, in front of me, the opportunity to create my own job...
That time when I ranted about wanting to commit suicide but not having enough energy to go and buy a gun.
That day in the evening, I asked my GF: "I think that the whole life is a humongous rationalization on top of biological avoidance of death".
She has an untreatable neurological disease. She told me "I found out it's a consensus among different philosophers. It absolutely is. I just prefer not to think about it".7
Positive story ahead.
Had to try and make a new system on my own in a company with no tech staff. I was scared shitless of the responsibility. About a year later we got 2 new devs and people are somehow paying for our very flawed and incomplete mvp.
It's fulfilling and fun. Taking something from zero and suddenly having an actual application with customers.
The other 2 engineers are fun and we talk shit while coding and teaching each other. We also study new tech every day to keep getting better.
I'm even getting some stocks soon.
Long road ahead but honestly, life's good.
My favorite is when they just don’t come in one day (don’t give notice, just see ya!). If that happens more than once in a few month period, that tells you more about the department than the individuals.
After playing Cities Skylines the whole day:
*tries to change the city in Google maps*
Call me crazy but honestly, getting a segmentation fault in C/C++ makes my day joyful
Java or Python guys will never understand the feel you get when you end up getting segmentation fault in C/C++
Sitting in midst of nature with beer in hand and segmentation fault on screen.
WOW :) THAT'S WHAT WE CALL LIFE :)
PS: Although sometimes it's frustrating as hell5
Undoubtedly the most common mistake that devs do : Ignoring your personal health, be it mental or physical.
I almost went through a burnout before realising things need to change.
Changed my lifestyle upside down after that
- Switched from wfh to an office job
- I cycle 12kms a day now
- Got a standing desk for myself to be more active
- and have a journal where i literally dump everything off my brain2
What’s happening to devrant the other day I saw a post how ppl preferred git gui over cli, just now saw a post where light theme ppl united. Where is my elitist crew?
I use arch btw /s20
However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...
Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5
Two states of a developer every day:
• Fuck this job. I hate everyone and everything. My code sucks. It's not working. Why did I choose this career?! I am so miserable.
• It works! I'm a programmer god. Oh my goodness I'm smarter than everybody.4
Why the fuck is the master almost constantly broken? And not even "some feature I'm working on doesn't work"-broken but "can't build this shit"-broken. What the fuck is the workflow here that it's apparently acceptable? I wasn't able to do SHIT today because of it. Almost whole fucking day wasted.4
So, a few years ago I did an internship at this company really close to my house. It was a total disaster but a few months ago I decided to give it another shot and apply for a junior position there as I needed money and they knew me there. For some reason they hired me and now I work there for about 2 months.
There's one other developer here and my problem is that he's the senior here. Guys I don't know what to do about it, this guy is so controlling. He won't allow me to decide ANYTHING.
I have a whiteboard with all my projects and he wrote deadlines there (because his boss said he needs to set deadlines since he never finishes anything on time, but he decided to put that on me) when I finished something in time (like 3 days early!) I wanted to put that under the project on the board. But he didn't want it. No reason. Just no.
He's also constantly talking, all day long. He writes 1 or 2 functions per day. Maybe fixes a small bug. And then one day per week he actually works. Constantly complaining about me, bugging me, removing electricity from my screens, setting my wallpaper to 2 dudes kissing ect. ect. its fucking annoying me. This guy even plays video games on his nintendo or call of duty.. Working for other customers that have nothing to do with this company. And the boss thinks he's great..
So 2 days ago, the whiteboard filled with his drawings was completely emptied because of me. It felt so good, he was so angry he didn't talk all day, to no one. What else can I do guys? I can't go to my boss, the other guy in this office doesn't really care and he's on his side. But when I code I need to be able to concentrate. I can't even have a serious conversation with this guy because he just doesn't take me serious. He always thinks he's right and wants control of every little thing...
What do I do?10
I might sound like one of those wierdos that are overly into Japan, Martial Arts and such, but I really enjoy Judo.
It is a sport where you have to FEEL the contact with your opponent.
Practising Judo made my day-to-day stress go away in just about 20m and also kept me in good shape, made me meet a lot of people/friends, lead me to live in a certain way and interact with people in a certain way (a good way, actually).
It also taught me which parts of the body are the most dangerous/fragile and cause the most pain.7
The convo between my friend and me back then
He: dude I heard you can code can you help me with this coding challenge on codechef
Me: bro, I try to let's check the problem
After 15-30 min we solve the question together
Then after 3 days or so he again meets me
He: do you know about Kali Linux
Me: no man not heard of Linux but what is Kali seems interesting
He: trying to hack WiFi
Me: *getting excited* bro teach me
He: I'm learning too
That day he got to know he can't hack WiFi and I got to know that my friend doesn't know jack shit about Linux, also Linux is awesome
But that moment changed my whole engineering life, I got to learn about Linux and I'm getting good at it every single day since then.
It's been 3 year since I met that fucker.

I hate demo day. Why can't anyone else demo this shit? Just because I'm the front-end dev on this team doesn't mean I'm the only one who can go through stories and click buttons on my screen damn it!5
I haven't been here for a long while but I wanted to peek in because of the dev ducks, cause I thought they would be a great gift for someone and now I found out they're sold out - my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
But now I decided I'm just gonna buy. a rubber duck and DIY it.1
I think the worst thing in the life is waking up without any desire to leave your bed just facing the roof for a whole day... It is like feeling empty.. omg!! This is horrifying to see your twenties passing without doing anything and the worse that you don't have anyone to talk to...
Sorry If I lost myself..8
Every year, the worst dev experience comes right at the holidays, when website owners with big egos want to launch right on (U.S.) Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, or New Year’s Eve/Day because they think they’re that popular and important. It never occurs to them that this is the WORST time because any third party support you need for hosting, APIs, plugins, etc. is either backlogged or out of office. And because NOBODY is eagerly awaiting the redesign of ANY website on those particular dates since they are stuffing their faces and getting s&&&faced at bars and parties. Nobody will even notice that your website has changed until January 15th at the earliest.1
The entire day wasted having to install a new OS to install a new Xcode to export an app, only to find the xcode was installed under a different user (who has long since gone from the company) to then have to look up what to do, to then just sit...........and....................wait.............for Xcode to download again.
And I know when I try to export my app (which had zero problems being exported to Android) I'm going to hit an entire day tomorrow of bug fixing for ios sh...stuff16
If I had to name one attribute that dominates the software engineering ecosystem, it would be “arrogance” especially among young programmers. I think software engineering would be a much better place to work if people were more empathetic than being ginormous assholes trying to have a leg up over all their peers. Collaboration is much more rewarding than competition. It feeds your soul and feels a lot more natural.
Collaboration over Competition.
Have a peaceful day at work guys!5
Oh great, now garbage websites can even break the browser's reload button. Wanna reload the page that never stops loading or crashes its scripts? Click the button and watch the browser do fuck all and a little bit of nothing.
Nah, you see to refresh that polished rotten turd you gotta close the tab and then restore it, and if that doesn't work open a new one and copy-paste the URL because who the fuck doesn't like some invalid state.
Can't wait for the day I have to shutdown and disconnect the battery because some idiot messed up the layout.3
The Project Management Triangle "fast-cheap-good (pick two, you can't have all three)" is something I've never agreed with.
How would you promise to build something good & cheap?
Doing it slowly will not really make it cheaper. The cost is usually development hours. If it takes 40 hours to make a good product - doing it 2 hours per day isn't going to make it cheaper.12
Millions of shattered dreams. Possibly the worst emotional pain.
Haters might love this state of mine.4
Since roughly 1 year ago I have been making "leftoff" comments in my code, whenever a work day ended or so, with a few notes on what I was doing and what I was about to work on next.
And I recommend it, I think that's good practice. Because I forgot to do it on friday and I have no GOD DAMN CLUE what I was working on :|3
Oh, as a noob dev my team was using a dropdown library for our filters in the website. The code was messed up cause they kept changing the design halfway through dev and after releases and then finally after some releases, the client wanted multilevel options as a new requirement.
So I scrapped the whole thing and made my own multilevel dropdown component (there were no decent libraries then) and we used that from then on. It has many issues now that I look back (who cares about keyboard interaction right?). But that is a refactor for another day.
what a garbage day. i've spent almost the whole day merging shit and the rest was meetings (also talking about how i merge shit).
dear fucked up branching strategy, when I look at the torn beauty of your mutated stream graph that carries the taint of corruption, depictions of feculent gnarlmaws come to my mind:
"These disgusting trees ring with the sorrowful tolling of entropic chimes, belch clouds of daemonic spores, and shed rot-wet blossom to carpet the maggot-churned earth beneath their boughs. The few stunted branches that grow from it feature dismal bells, tentacles and more pustulent boils."6
I might sound ridiculous but yeah, I am switching from C++ to java.
reason: I am bored sticking to a single language for 4 years.
Why not python?
reason: I use it every second day at my work.
Why this(java) shit? There are tons of other languages out there.
reason: java gives me PLEASURE
How drunk are you?
That day we had the weekly meeting with my boss to tell him what was new since last week.
We were 2 developers, I did the backend and the other guy did the frontend.
I tell him we had nothing new on the frontend. Literally not even one more line of code.
He tells me he gave the other guy some money the day before to encourage him to engage a bit more on the project.
The meeting is about to end when we receive a message in the development group, the guy said he wasn't going to continue in the project.
Not like that, dude.5
Windows is more open than commercial Android distributions provided by the major phone manufacturers
Have a nice day ☕11
"Upgraded" to Visual Studio 2022 and receiving this error several times a day:
TFS Error: TF30063 You are not authorized.
Only solution is to close->re-open VS.
I think I'm 10 restarts away from losing my mind.4
As expected, I take a single day of PTO and I get a whole bunch of emails about stakeholders needing help and requests for website improvements. I have 14 days of PTO that I have to use in the next two months, so stakeholders gonna get a rude surprise when they see my out of office response almost every other day.3
Creating a stripped down version of a product is a big red flag to me (e.g. "easy/light mode").
It means the main product is too complicated; it handles too many things. Instead, shift the focus back to the core of the product by removing features.
In the our day-to-day it is completely normal to stumble upon things that used to work but now have been changed: they have been deprecated.
Deprecating and removing features should be added to any product iteration. Thus being "normal" and a common occurrence in any changelog; just like features and bug fixes.
This gives non-tech product owners "permission" to remove bloat. Devs stop whining about "the big rewrite". And end-users don't suddenly have to learn yet another tool with "basic" features missing.
I think the best example is google (https://killedbygoogle.com/) and the worst is the amazon shopping website (what a mess!).3
I respect Qt
I respect Qt
I respect Qt

I respect Qt
I typed every line and did not copy any of those lines to show how much I respect Qt.
Have a nice day, gentlemen2
Had a bad dream one night that my bosses were going to run me through the ringer on some stuff that I needed to do better.
A day later, exactly that happened.
It would’ve been nice if my premonition could have had a few days gap between dream and reality so I’d have had some time to fix things first.
Confluence WYSIWYG editor for tables on wiki pages. Forget about git and GitHub idiosyncrasies, "at the end of the day" project documentation in Confluence and Jira is the real challenge.1
Wasn’t an intended attack but our virus software had an update that meant it quarantined one on the windows startup files. Cue every user being unable to start up their pcs. That was a fun day!4
Fffffffuuuuuuck me! I got some days off for working longer hours on a priority project than healthy humans should. Now they want me to take part of one of those days for a Very Important video call. Now canceling and rescheduling plans for that day so I can be on duty that whole day because there’s no way my head is getting or staying in relaxation mode with this interruption.4
I am now so nervous waiting for the first day of my new role. It is projected to start on May 16th. In the meanwhile I’ve finished my Background Check, Tax Documents, and other onboarding information. There’s supposed to be a drug test but I haven’t received info on it yet. I have two weeks where I might receive a few memos and hopefully my company laptop but will be largely just waiting. I’m going to try and focus on learning Puppet while I wait but this is like waiting for Christmas as a kid. Even though it’s a very short amount of time it feels like years.5
I bought some shoes from a drug dealer. I don't know what he laced them with, but I was tripping all day!1
I have not worked all day today and have only attended meetings. Going to call in a half day since I am in a total unhealthy (cheese puffs and fried food) kind of day today and have just been in my bed binge watching.8
We have a tradition in our company to post in an anonymous forum about the things we're thankful for when it's thanksgiving.
I almost wanted to post that I'm super thankful to have this job, because I have the ability to stay at home, work "remotely", while the kids are in school/daycare, and just sleep all day because I can finish my task for the week in 2 hours.5
What do you guys do on low work days? both in terms of
a) Low energy = low work production
b) Low work required of you/slow work day11
All these companies not going the full 100% remote and requiring one day in the office, would it kill them to do 100% remote? My current role is fully remote and were spread through many timezones and still manage to work well, why don't companies see this and give an option atleast to be fully remote for developers?12
I don't know what's wrong with me..
Within one day I basically lost interest in everything I do. I just don't see the point of all this anymore.
And the bad thing is, that I don't even know where that comes from so suddenly, everything is going fine, but still.. Life just feels like pain at the moment.
Don't want do drag down someone else with me and I sincerely apologise if it's too late to mention it at this point, just hope that maybe someone here can understand what's going on or give me some advice on how to fix my situation.7
I fucking hate my job
Man it’s been a year now freelancing and just working like a dog day and night for a scammy dating app and I just wanna shoot myself in the face at this point. Just another horrible day after the other dealing with a bunch of assholes.3
3 years ago when I was a university student...
I have a classroom presentation with my friend a group of 4.
When I start presenting for about 5 minutes, my friend who control the PowerPoint Slide told everyone in the group the PC was about to restart.
Suddenly before we try to move a mouse to the update postpone button, it restart right away in front of the class and our eyes.
That day a whole class need to wait around half a hour to continue the presentation session.
What a wasted time, Windows.2
Any night, 1:30am, bedtime: "Yes! I can't WAIT for tomorrow to begin! I'm gonna make SO much progress on that personal project that I just KNOW is gonna change the world and make me a billionaire! My time is now!"
Next day, 9am, first call of the day: "Ugh, waking up SUUUUUCKS! But, fine, just gotta get through the workday, then it's beast mode time!"
5pm: "Ugh, that day SUCKED... meeting after meeting, constant interruptions for the few minutes I got to hack code, SO many emails, and hey, good day, only five new things pushed down from corporate to bang my head against! Feelings pretty mentally exhausted, but it's all good, I fortunately love this programming stuff, so first dinner, then a little exercise, spend some time with the family, and then it's time to COOOODE!"
10pm: "Ok, house is FINALLY quiet (fucking dog), just a little noise from my daughter staying up way too late again... kinda spent, but this project still excites me, and I may not get as much done as I was hoping, but fine, I can still make some tangible progress and that's what matters. Maybe just one last quick check of email, Reddit, make sure there's no new Hot Ones or Honest Trailers I gotta watch, update IDEA plugins and see what's new, then it's work time! Nothing can stop me now!"
Any night, 1:30am, bedtime: "SHIT! I GOT FUCK ALL DONE AGAIN! GO DAAAAAAAMN IIIIIT!!!!"3
The person who invented powerpoint and those who use it/love it should be skinned alive.
FUCKING SHIT OF A PRODUCT.
On the other side, instead of torturing someone to death, force them to use Power point for 2 hours a day and that will be enough for the person to beg you to kill them.
Join me in this journey against power point.21
I would not consider myself an overachiever by any means, but I must say, I'm quite satisfied with my contributions this year at the new (relatively speaking) job. I got to go back to writing code almost every day, all day, and that sure as hell beats being in meetings all the goddamn time.2
Boss asks if the project will be finished today, I reply ‘yes’ and then realised I’d not pushed my code after working from home the previous day! Doh!1
Just got told that there will be a 5KM run in march by my teacher.
I will either break my foot a day before or simply fucking refuse.
I'm ill enough already.6
Up until a couple months ago we had 5 devops. Everything went smoothly af. We could get new environments provisioned in a couple of hours.
Now we have 18 of them. It's already day 3 and still noone has a clue why our env provision scripts are failing.
Well... At least I'm getting paid for sitting and waiting for them to finish this circus 😀1
I deleted the Facebook app on my phone (2.5 hours of background use a day?!)
Now I have nothing to close to immediately reopen and feel like an idiot. And don't you dare suggest dev rant, this place barely has enough content to open once a day.15
Kids these days and their ultrasonic scalpels. Back in _my_ day, we were doing sugreries with _real_ scalpels made of bare metal. Who cares that ultrasonic ones are way less invasive and it heals faster! If you’re using an ultrasonic scalpel, you’re not even a real surgeon. What’s next? Computer does a surgery for you while you wiggling around the controllers? WHAT DO YOU MEAN ITS ALREADY BEING DONE!? What happened to this country!4
Nothing gets on my nerve than microsoft. Just another day being a victim of fucking microsoft trash product called teams. All I wanted to do was login but no, this ass of a product has it's own shit things.3
!dev, just a rant
I got covid a couple of weeks before Christmas. Would have been considered a mild case as I didn’t need hospital treatment but felt really rough for about a week.
A month later I still have a cough, hardly any sense of taste or smell and exhaustion.
One day I think I’m fine and then I struggle with everything. It’s like having severe depression again.
I keep hearing about people having hardly any symptoms and being better in a couple of days. I am definitely envious of those people.
Had a fine day, but all of a sudden existential dread kicked in.
Then I noticed a bug right next to me, got a sheet of paper and let it out. Thanks for lifting my spirits2
Back in the day I tried to get the domain conspiracy.com. But a group of powerful elites from around the world banded together to thwart me from getting that domain.
ugh... today i was this 🤏 close to quitting my incredibly boring job just because of an incredibly shitty code for which i had to write a test. i spent my entire day watching web series instead of writing test cases for this ugly shitty crappy 150 line java code.... ugh2
Ffs, spent all day fixing jests tests and couldn’t resolve an error. Hours of googling turns out it, I forgot to put event.preventDefault() on a blank href.
"Pay more attention to the house"
I'm working here!
Why every non tech person acts like I'm doing no fucking shit all day?
These types of things makes me want open my own fucking office.5
you know that feel when you're in one or two weeks of vacation and one day, you look into the mirror and you notice you look like 5 years younger and also you're able to actually enjoy things in life and try out new things, and you wonder, what am i doing with my life...2
I think my next remote job is going to be at least 500 miles or a minimum of four states away to make it harder for someone to spring a “everyone local to the office has to come in for this day of corporate training and indoctrination” on me at the last minute.
“Oh sure I can come in. I’ll be on the lookout for my flight tickets and itinerary”.
Usually makes them scurry off.2
Here I am again, entertaining the thought of having a day job that doesn't require me to be in front of a computer..8
Each programmer is a poet at heart
Programmers are like God. We create defects and also kill them too. We spend the whole day fixing a defect, and the patch itself gives birth to a few more defects of its own.1
I went to a Java community conference for the first time and I honestly nearly teared up. It’s been a few years since I’ve actually seen actual hard core engineering with real considerations on memory etc. I felt like all I do all day is get blocked by red tape when I do my job.
God, it felt refreshing to see the reason I got into programming still exists.2
Friday, forced deploy day for last & current months work. Been stockpiled due to holiday.
Yesterday boss demoed the product to clients so they expect to test today.
Early o'fuck this morning, a coworker managed to drop all secrets and env vars from CI pipelines and trigger a deploy leaving production broken...
It's gonna be a long and busy Friday...
Worst was getting head hunted into my current role at this terrific company.
Three months later I’m done with it.
It’s not shit shitty codebase, or the lack of direction that self governing teams have. It’s not the megalomaniac company owner. It’s the bullshit team mobbing and 8 hours of video calls a day.
The best part.
Come he’ll or high water I’m getting myself out before the end of the year.
I’d rather be busy and have f’k all chance of promotion than any more of this. At least the day will fly by.
Just hope I don’t make the same mistake twice, that’s become my biggest worry now.
My family STILL doesn't know what I do to this day. I graduated 3 years ago and have been in the industry since. They think I'm a designer. 🙄 No, mom and dad. I CODE. 😂2
Spent the day working on a concept for a Survival, Twin Stick Shooter, Tower Defence game. not sure if it will work yet, but everyone I have ran my Concept by really likes it.
Not a rejection per se, but a company I applied to just stopped emailing me after trying to arrange a day for me to come to the office and meet the team, following an informal phone interview. They dragged their heels while I was on leave and by the time they got back to me I was back at work and had limited time. They basically just ghosted me after that.
Started the day having a career crisis where I feel worthless and all I have been doing is some worthless web shit that humanity never needed and most certainly, never will.
For a long time I could not understand how do people put up with watching ads in Android apps. Then it dawned upon me: they grew up like this and they never had a proper classic old-school desktop experience. Back in the day it was unimaginable to have intrusive ads. I will never put up with intrusive ads. I despise it
Now even developer tools have ads, like Docker or NPM8
I finally got one of these boards, I still need to figure what to track on it, I already have a planner with me for my day to day
There's something super broken about the interview process in our industry. I spent 30 minutes chatting with a hr recruiter. 2 hours on a coding screen. 1 hour for a technical interview. 1 hour talking with the head of engineering. But then they decided to pass on me. Well if things went well then, then I spend an entire fucking day on an onsite.
Wow. Since when did the industry get so bloated until we have to do so much to get a job? Is signal really that unclear so candidates have to jump through hoop after hoop?
Starting my day with 15 emails that I urgently need to respond to. I hate Thursdays. It's just meetings and emails and more meetings and more emails. No time to get work done.2
Another day with pain, miesery and suffering.
Every fucking day its the same bullshit eith having the captain of titanic to lead us and being the sole ruler of everything (clients, development, sales etc). Meanwhile one of the clients is a like a huge iceberg that grows bigger and bigger and tries to be in the way of the ship (the project).
But my sad realiztion is it doesnt matter, since the people is only minor problem. While it is a fundamental problem in the structure of most companies in general.
I swear the though of the retirement age is like 74-76 before the pain stops or some bullshit is so unincomprehensible to think about.2
Do you remember what kind of questions and information you were given *after* being hired as a programmer?
For example, in the service industry, they might tell you about payroll, how they do scheduling, what a typical day looks like for your role, etc.12
I just solved a 3 or 4 month old bug. Dont even know how long I've been struggling. But im tired. I had to hire people off upwork. Over 20 developers failed to solve this problem. 4 months later this one guy solved it within a day.... Fck u flutter1
Sometimes i motivate myself by going on youtube.com and searching this exact "A day in the life of a software engineer"
then i watch a couple of videos during breakfast and lunch time
and search pretty much anything to do with software development
and also listen to some Lofi beats
every day my boss says he'll review the requirements for our product. every day he forgets to do so. every day he asks where the update for the next stage is. every day i remind him. every day he forg ---2
Hope everyone had a chill and relaxed day. I know I did. Sun was nice. People at work were so easy going. Didn't have a segfault all day.
Was to be expected. It was 4/20 all day.11
That one colleague coming up with questions unrelated to his teams field, not grasping your explanation, then answering bitchy because he doesn't understand and finally sends you a new (totally moronic) jira ticket after you stop responding to him, totally killing your last bits of motivation and concentration for that day.
Each day, I read the vast swath of ticket hell hole that is our JIRA.
I read tickets that are written by people with not just 0, but an undefined understanding of technology...
I read tickets that are technically impossible due to this 0 understanding...
And finally, I laugh in bitterness seeing the time estimates stack up to months and months worth of work for which the managers expect to be done in 2-3 weeks 😂3
The day I realised There is an AngularJS before Angular 2
In our t ch stack, we have multiple components, most of them are backend, but 2 of them are fronnt end.
The first one is a straight Angular 4 application, and it has the normal angular structure, a ts file, a css file, a js file.
The other component, has a very weird structure I don't understand to this day.
It has a mix of js and html files, sometimes one inside another.
The js file has some "angular.core.shit" and I thought it should be Angular, but nothing in it resembles any angular project.
After much confusion, I finally came across an AngularJS website which is supposed to be deprecated last year.
Then I came to know of the story of Google taking ove rAngular and releasing Angular 2.1
Fuck it, go ruin your own life, I don't deserve this shit.
I don't deserve getting treated like shit by my mother for financially helping her, in fact, bringing all the fucking money in this household to the table.
I don't deserve being gaslighted by some hypocrite who victimized or egos themself up to fit their narrative.
Just ruin your own day, but keep me out of it. I'm tired of playing mental support just to be shit on.2
Started a side project.
Learnt flutter and firebase.
Started coding app.
Four months pass by.
App is mostly ready.
Wakes up on Saturday morning.
Updates Android Studio and SDK because, why not?
Dependency depreciation warnings!
Emulator stopped running!
Wify is angry with me as we planned shopping but now this. Fortunately, she's also in IT, so she understands..
FML! Spent the entire day stackoverflowing and fixing errors!
8PM evening, I am back to Friday's status. My shoulder and neck hurts but my mind is chilled.6
I don't care about God's existence but somehow I'm meeting the deadlines always. It's a new thing for me.
I have stopped paying attention to my work due to interviews and somehow my work performance is getting better and better each day.
All I needed was to work less and give estimation according my mood each day.8
New AltRant update!
This update features a fix for instability issues in the Notifications tab. All users that are in the testing group - please update soon! I am giving you a 3-day update window.1
Hello, today was my First day, internship at Microsoft innovation center BE, a great day with amazing people, my project is called tech Office, we need to process data from sensors in the office, create and use Microsoft AI to optimize and help the office become smarter and more efficient. Make the life better and the environment more productive. I don't really know where to start but I'm happy to be given such an opportunity and will do everything to make this work !
Happy Valentine’s day to all the lonely gang who are coding while everyone else is getting cuddles.
Like who needs cuddles amirite?
Cuddles are temporary
Your commit however stays in the second arctic vault for 1000s of years3
Yesterday whole day ive been trying to deploy an ios app to app store from a flutter project but kept getting "module not found" in build compilation error
I thought to myself am i fucking dumb?
Or maybe i am smart but extremely UNLUCKY in life like always?
Today i googled for this error and one of the top stack overflow answers with a +50 bounty points, first sentence they answered was "this is a very bad and UNLUCKY error, after trying to solve this issue for hours i finally found the solution..."
Even though my coding bootcamp was pretty shitty, I did make friends with the person seated next to me on the first day. We were assigned seats next to each other. We bonded over our thoughts of “we’re adults wtf is up with assigned seats” and “I would never sit at the back of the classroom.”
She really helped me out when I didn’t understand some things in class. I helped her with notes on days when she was absent.
Even though we don’t socialize much after bootcamp, I still consider her a great friend.1
Question of the day:
What to do when listing fees on exchanges too high?
And a happy new year (delayed though :p)!11
Failed the interview I was hoping for.
I already had 3 tech rounds, this was 4th and god I couldn't solve anything. Other rounds were fine but only this one was bad. I feel so exhausted, I finally thought that I'm out of this shit hole but no I have to continue working day and night. :( :(2
If your company starts handing out a book called “What the heck is EOS?”, be afraid. Be very afraid.
It contains analogies like: there’s a table, sometimes seats get rearranged and there’s no seat for you. No seat = you’re getting laid off.
My last company gave out this book. They even sent it to people they had already laid off (but hadn’t reached their last day yet).
EOS = Entrepreneurial Operating System, in case you were wondering7
Damn.....had great night last night
sophos had a partners function and we won an award as an emerging partner
So me and other guys forgot that tomorrow (today) is work day and drank a number of glasses and now in the office with a hangover2
We need to create a completely software driven music band. Use AI to learn what people like and adjust over time. So the music becomes "better" as more input is received. It should be complete with VR musicians and VR stages and concerts.
The band name would be: Zero Day1
Every day i wonder if i should just quit the dev life and write childrens books. I am imagining the skillsets should transfer pretty well.
Then i remember i have bills to pay
It's seriously fucked up how you just suddenly realize that you're getting old just with what you eat and drink. I never drank alcohol, but instead I sometimes drink sodas. The fucked up thing is that now I've noticed if I down a 1.5L bottle of soda with sugar in it, my motivation is gone the next day. I'm down, I'm irritated, tired, I just can't bring myself to work at all. The moment I open my IDE and start writing a function I just feel incredibly frustrated and wanna smash the keyboard and close the computer. I just want to lie on the couch and watch Netflix or game all day. That's so fucked up. Now I gotta stop drinking sodas so I can stay mentaly healthy?! Aargh!5
Yet again, another feature hand off where most everything I was told in the meeting is contradicted by the feature doc and design they give me at the end. So now I get another day of pulling teeth to try and get what I need to do my job. I'm looking forward to next week when these same people ask why the project isn't on the arbitrary track they also haven't shared with me.
To all my Machine Learning engineers, Ive been doing Frontend development for 6 years and I'm done. Wanting to get into machine learning because I've always loved data.
1. What is your day to day like?
2. Any advice for my learning journey?
I was terminated last year from BigTech. Will I ever get another job in another BigTech company?
Not a layoff. Terminated for moonlighting. Lack of judgment on my part. Trying to move past this but the events still haunt me till this day.
Not looking for sympathy. Rather, advice on how to approach job search and background checks in the future. I have big ambitions and don’t want to be an IC forever. I’m hoping this doesn’t prevent me from becoming a manager —> Director in the future.3
It’s taken me 20 years to realize that I love tech but hate corporate IT. The thought of spending another 20+ years sitting in meetings listening to people drone on about nonsense, spending countless hours performing system upgrades when all I want to do is code, etc. just makes me sick to my stomach. It’s the same day over and over again.2
Good Morning! (it's morning here in my area) My coworker gave a good word today "Don't work for an arsehole until forgot to work for yourself" and "Working for a company who under appreciate you is like having sex with a zombie , the more you remain inside, the more part of your penis disappear"
hahahahaaha and today is his last day..6
When it comes to using XCode, I can’t be the only one who thinks it’s a stupidly large file. Took a whole day to download, I know having a WiFi speed of 20Mb/s isn’t great but on a brand new iMac with nothing else installed you’d except it to download and install pretty quickly.
Also what is it with the Mac and things not wanting to be full screen??4
I recently graduated from university and landed a job as a junior devops engineer.
There’s so much tech stacks to learn and I’m in the process of converting a legacy CI system composed of only bash scripts to Python and I feel that 8 hours a day isn’t enough and I often feel that after working hours, I should be reviewing more so that the next day I can be more productive.
I am given tasks to do but I keep feeling the pressure that I need to prove myself.
Is this normal? I’m not used to this learning pace.3
I have to make a change to one of our web apps today. I hate front end, the code for this is terrible, the fix is going to be horrible and hacky.
I really miss having some kind of motivation for this work, it would make life easier.
Instead it’s just one empty pointless day after another.
Showing up to work every day after 25 years of this knowing that I really kind of suck at my job and feeling like I’ll never get to a point where I can say I’m fully caught up to the level of knowledge others I work with have or that I’m expected to have. I suppose this is a bad habit of attitude but it seems to be an actual reality for me with every passing day, week, month, and year. It’s all just too much and my brain just isn’t as agile as it once was (and it wasn’t all that agile to begin with).3
Today has been a weird day. AWS us-east-1 region has been having huge issues for hours now, with the console and multiple services down or erroring out. My day has been an odd mix of twiddling my thumbs with nothing to do and trying to calm down angry people who are also twiddling their thumbs with nothing to do.
I'm tempted to just log off Slack and leave an auto-reply of "Can't fix it, no workaround, leave me alone" so I can go back to bed.4
They did not renew my contract. Dude you left me hanging for a whole day (I was wondering if I even had a job or if it was just some sort of scam), then at my second task, on my third day, when I ask for a call to show me wtf was I supposed to do, told me to "just read".
The ticket was just a link to figma. I did my best, but missed some stuff that were supposed to change. It could have been avoided if you just took the time to show me around, you stupid fuck.4
This is the link that has brought me the most joy acceleration in my life.
Go see what it does yourself.
I love adminer so much.
Screw MySQL Workbench.
(this rant was saved since that day images stopped working, good job guys)4
I have a question
When I'm coding sometimes I get sick
I mean this is getting me when I'm worried if the deadline coming day after day, I get nausea a lot
By a lot I mean a lot
I can't even look at my computer screen or even touch the keyboard
Is it only me or it's normal ?!!
I think it's stress13
Another machine not working till morning.
That's what happens when the engineer knows a bit how to operate the machines but doesn't have a grasp on how cutting tools work...
Replacing 60€ tools every 4 hours that should last a week is not profitable.
When so many tools are spent that there's no more in stock.
Also manufactor has cutting parameters for a reason... Making the tools work 3 times faster or deeper does not mean profit, means damaged machines and tools.
As comparison, think over clocking a cpu to 7000hz and pushing it to the max 24h a day...5
I'm currently working as an intern in a Web company and its the first time that I have to work 8 hours a day (I'm in college so that's completely new to me).
How do you guys stay focused for 8 hours? It's kinda hard to go from 90 minutes classes to 8 hours of (somewhat) consistent work.
How do I focus for a long period of time?8
Someone in my mind, I see programmers who use Windows as “unserious” and “don’t really know what they’re doing”. I always catch myself every time because I know that this is entirely false. And smart people actually use the tools they’re most comfortable in to get the job done. At the end of the day, what really matters is how much money you’re making for the capitalists at the top.4
Another day, another possibly stupid idea for my language. Another one of those that's been floating in my head from the start, and I want to have it, but I'm not entirely sure about its implications...?
I mean... languages already have semantic feature like this, I'm just trying to extend the principle to not have any special cases, to be completely universal and have simple syntax.
Tech department wants me to work on cool, innovative stuff for the company. Marketing Director doesn't think anything tech-related is worth my time or cost to company. I'm just here stagnating, building HTML templates over and over again. This guy is holding me back, not letting me develop and at the same time help the company move forward technologically.
I've been complaining about shit hosting provider for over two years now, the other day they went down for days and affects business. Only now they wake up and decide on better hosting environment.
I need to find another job or do my own thing. Fuck corporates with no sense of technological innovation.5
I really have to say i love and hate dev rant :( Why is the feed so so so so bad. I see almost the same posts everytime/day. Even when i refresh. And its not better when looking at today/week/month/alltime. Is the Devrant just not maintslned anymore or are there just soo few users.
On the other hand though i find it veey enterteining and relateable at times. Much better then some twitter/insta etc .. i hope devrant will get more love from the devs and more user :)4
Follow up rant: https://devrant.com/rants/4943574/...
(Funny link btw.)
I tell him "Fine, upload it to the GitLab repo I created a week ago and you never used it." on Friday.
Today, the day *before the presentation*: "Here, have the GitHub repo, ask for permission and you're all set up.".
He's getting the boot.3
After upgrading to kubelet 1.24 kubernetes won't even start. Complains about an unrecognized flag "--network-plugin=cni". And stackoverflow has nothing to offer to work around it.
God I hate backwards-incompatible software updates. Esp w/o vendor's scripts automatically porting old version configs to match the new configuration convention.
Now I have to learn all about something big, called dockershim.
Fuck! I so don't want to spend my whole day on this...
It's not very linuxish to push breaking updates w/o any bpo mechanism, esp for a software that's a part of the linux foundation :|15
I'm studying 10-12 hours every day, and it feels like I'm stuck in a loop that every time I learn something new I feel like I have to learn other 10 things at the same time. At least I finally found something useful to do while I don't find a job.2
What to do as junior, if multiple seniors (4) aren't in sync with each other. Following different convention on same client's project. Even after 3 years they didn't able come up with seemless infrastrure. The code is getting ugly day by day. No review happens. Is that normal? As they are not in sync, we, juniors are frequently getting confused what to do. What could be done? I'm planning to leave the project somehow. Don't know what to do. 😑6
little typo making my day now, and let to this little "improvment":
$ git config --global alias.vomit commit
First day at the office today. Was fun. My team DevOps has mega-sized cubicles. They are so much larger than the other teams I walked past today 🙃1
first job after uni some months in... had just about enough today at work, it should not take me a whole day to almost figure out 1 bug cause nothing is documented or the code for 1 thing is mixed with 17 other things, we have no docs, no comments, we have no requirements... boss just says what he wants and everyone goes to write code, no planning , no design, next day boss changes his mind and so on ...what a day.... getting depressed
Started working st 8AM and whoops it's 1PM. Then I read the review of a yesterday's PR and just fuck it, I'm not dealing with this today. I'm done for the day. Exhausted beyond belief.2
what are personal projects if not the daughters of hackathon solutions that never saw the light of day6
Just learned that you can join a network through a QR code. That's sick!
I thought you could only go to links / store plain text with QRs...19
Friday is always such a significant day because you know what's up next? WEEKEND BABY but I am up since 4am after four hours of sleep (it's 5am now), because well life sometimes sucks like that, and the only thing keeping my brain from going gaga is work so I am working since 4am to probably 7,8pm
Fml and wish me luck8
First day of work at the new job.
BUT, don’t wanna work. Just want to snuggle in a cozy blanket and watch GOT on Netflix
(I know GOT is not on Netflix, but don’t you wish it was?)2
Day of days! Insomnia supports environment variables! And has for a long time! I just missed it is all!
Having sex. Or long hot showers. It's amazing how doing either of those helps me unplug for the day and start to refresh my self for the next day of coding.
Context, I used to burnout quiet often. Learning to unplug allowed me to be a better software engineer that could work better over an extended period of time.3
Has anyone ever checked out or is a member of the overemployed subreddit? I’m at a point in my career where I could start applying for senior dev jobs, but according to this sub It’d be more lucrative to hold down two FT junior dev jobs. I average about 3-4 hours a day at my job so I could pull it off if I get a second just like it.4
So two weeks ago I said I want to make a website
After 9 days of working 9 hours per day I’m finally done with the basics. It’s a website that’s basically an infinite post board
I’d want to invite people here to test it but I’m also afraid that there might be people just attacking my server. So now idk what to do4
We were developing a new feature and on the code complete day, I had to take leave. While code review one of the devs changed my code without proper analysis.
End Result, half the things cannot be tested until that piece of code is fixed2
So I’ve spent the last 20 minutes waiting for an Amazon S3 and Cloudfront Pro and another Amazon Web Services WordPress plugin to delete from a server via FileZilla. How’s your day going so far?6
New office stories during the emotional turmoil...
Story 1: The creepy fuck
So being unaware of the fact that I was connected with this guy on LinkedIn already.
Ron walks upto my desk and greets me on my first day on floor. Weird, but whatever.
I politely interact, because gotta make friends and create my following to get shit done.
The next day, randomly comes asking for a laptop sticker and I am like WTF! He is like sticker was an excuse, I just wanted to say Hi!
Day 3: same random creep shit. Talks about personal topics and invades personal space uninvited.
Day 4: Keeps starring at me while I ignore and judges me evidently with stupid suggestions on how to exist without being asked for.
Fuck this guy.
Story 2: The classic case of Dunning Kruger effect
So I get introduced to my tech team today and everyone start piling on me to guide them on decision making. The CTO creates a Slack thread with me and Co-founder asking me to get things moving on priority.
The co-founder shut him out right away. Fucking hilarious.
But, a retard starts schooling me on how to use Slack. Lmfao.
Me being polite, said I'll follow.. dude starts bragging on how he wrote company policy to get everyone on Slack yada yada..
To be honest, the Slack experience is beyond broken based on what these idiot has setup.
He literally opened my Slack and responded to the CTO thread.
That's where I got pissed. I upfront told him that hey! Calm your tiddies down. I know how to use Slack. I have used it since it was in the beta.
I have been in much much mucy bigger orgs and places more well structured than what you have here.
I told him on his face what the flaws where and how I felt a downgrade from where I am coming from.
The look on his face was priceless and he started sweating. Lol
Never again he'll school anyone.
I mean I understand if you are humble and genuinely guiding a new hire. But being cocky unnecessarily and shoving things down my throat without yourself knowing shit or know about the other person is purely asshole move.
Anyway, I am still upset about the scam. Fuck this world.9
After a year working in an office where everyone worked part time (manager 3h, other programmers 5/6h per day) and I was the only full time employee …
… one day the manager told me: “since today is pre-holiday you can go home one hour early as we usually do”
… after a year…
… of many pre-holiday days …
you finally felt that it was the time to inform me that I could have spent less hours in that 💩 office?
[… finally I don’t feel so guilty for going home just 5 minutes after the others left the office because there was nothing to do …]
The thing about startups is that you have the opportunity to be involved in a lot of different things. I easily get bored with repetitively doing almost the same thing day in day out.
In my current company, I have been working on the same mobile app for close to two years. It’s the same basic thing, build UI, make API calls, and fix bugs. I am so bored that I’m fit to climb a wall. Anyways, I’ve started applying for backend positions.
But then startups are volatile and things are almost always unorganised.2
I wonder which is worse:
1. all day long every day doing things you MUST do and running out of hours in the day to do them all
2. all day long every day doing things you WANT to do and running out of hours in the day to do them all1
I am a software engineer with many skills. Skills that are wasted on creating a QuickSight dashboard. The day I even look at this dashboard again or am asked to make another one, I will start applying to different jobs.
Just got back from NDC and had a ton of fun. Kinda weird with government restrictions going into effect the last day and having to gtfo of an omicron outbreak.
According to their FAQ "all sessions are recorded and will be made public on our YouTube channel approximately one month after the conference."
Definitely nag your employer about going if it's ever on the table.2
I swear, there will come a day when I stop confusing Grafana and Kibana. The two things sound too similar for their own good.4
So I recently started a new position as a Node JS dev, and on my first day I've been assigned to the DevOps team... The offer and the interview had me believe I was going to be actually writing code not config and yaml files5
TightVNC on Windows OS's, copy & paste don't always work, solution ?
Today, it isn't sometimes, its all day !4
👋 to all my fellows working on saturday.
Let's spill out the real reasons. I will go first :
Working because my manager wants to justify the salary. He wants the team to work more before going to december holidays. Although this one day doesn't make any difference 😑 😑😑😑😑😑😑6
So, I have a friend and he asked me to do a discord bot for him. (The language was kinda up to me and I chose Python). Nothing complicated (theoretically). I coded it, tested it and sent it to him. But after installing it, he got a different issue EVERY single day. And he didn't change anything! The most infuriating part is, that I couldn't even reproduce the issues he had. WHY? Why can't it just work? Why can't a simple project not just be simple?5
I'm calling half of the world to find a new contract and guess who's going to receive a thousand call a day after I find it.
On the other hand, it doesn't matter, I plan to go to portugal and do a paid workaway in a surf and yoga hostel.3
Years ago I made a meme about eating dogs.
My detractors have continued to hound me to this very day.
i'm sitting on the bus a few years ago, slamming the keyboard on my chromebook to try and get a wifi password. open crosh by accident. i went to check it out for a few days. i check back a few years later, every tab (basically everything for CrOS) autocloses if it has "crosh" in the url (regardless if it's crosh or not.) this pisses me off. i tell my brother about it, and he gets the terminal running for one day. how? i still dont know, sadly the program he installed (a harmless music notation app) breaks as well as the terminal. to this day i still wonder about what our IT department was thinking.
What's your ideal and current work time?
How many hours do you work per day and when do you start?
And what days you are mostly off?10
Technically we are not getting any paid leaves. Because we have to complete tasks of the day too on which we have applied for leave. Before the leave-day🤔
🔵 I used 75 Hz IPS screen for some years
🟠 Last year I bought a 144 Hz screen VA
🔵 Last month I finally bought myself 144 Hz IPS
I hated the slight ghosting on VA; however I gotta say that VA did have one major advantage over both of my old and new IPS:
On a sunny day, the VA panel reflected literally NO light, so it was always readable. But both IPS's suffer from ambient light; the only way to work comfortable with them was to close curtains during the daytime ☀️5
Holy f-ing hell!
Why do the small things have such fucked up corner cases?
This is very likely a giant bug with Qt, but how does this even happen?
I am using Qt with QML and sending data to a database on the backend. I call functions in QML from a Date JS object (property actually, but it calls functions) to set the date as a QDate. This is stored in the database as yyyy/MM/dd. This is fine. When I read the date out I convert it back from string to QDate and send this object to QML. Which then converts this to a Date object in JS in QML.
But at the point where it converts from a QDate to a Date object it loses an entire day. Seriously? You didn't gain a day going from Date -> QDate, but you lose a day going from QDate -> Date?
How long has QML and Qt been around? At least 5 to 10 years. How has this bug lasted this long? I don't want to do a bug report. I will, but I don't want to .6
Ok, it's the second day and still the same problem: creating JS apps takes like forever. I think it's maybe with the servers since my Internet is completely fine.
Hey Ranters..am new year...(here)...got u a cool way to propose your crush...this valentines day..(S.t Valentines...rOfL).

first day back at work after six months of educational leave. I love and mossed my team but damn, I could already use another six months of sleeping out.
Hi mates 👋
Am going to dedicate myself to dev & open source communities.
I want to build an API that solves something, and I'm looking for your suggestions: what problems in your day-to-day dev life that you would love to have it automated/have it available programmatically?10
First day back at work, lunch time now. So far I've been to one meeting and done no work. I can't get on to the vpn. We get OTP for the vpn via sms. Sms is taking so long to come through that it always expired by the time I get it
The kicker? I work for a cellular provider1
I'm not involved in the policy management, but my office uses Google account management. I also have to free trial one of the services I use, because my account got pwned in an attack long ago.
Turns out, my office gives us 6 different emails to choose from. Two different usernames (old, from 8 years ago, and the new one) as well as three website names (.net, .com, and another website).
Literal gold for 30-day trials.
Finally moved to debian:budgieDE for new years eve, looking forward to a very stable year for development.
I am loving my first day here, bye ubuntu(mostly bye snaps)11
In my case, the only way to stay productive is to task switch often. Suffering of adhd, I get bored of researching / developing a specific solution rather quickly, and then have a huge issue staying focused.
That's also why I can't imagine being a programmer. Being a sysadmin, however, is great! Dealing with many different tickets a day.
Guys I am having a question for a long time....
Say you want to work while traveling. How do you handle monitors? I ideally want two big (not the small ones) monitors while working, however it's impossible to bring two monitors, one is heavy enough...
If one day some company invents some very very thin and foldable monitors I'll be very very happy.17
I wish there were some stats on this site.
What are the most used tags?
How many tags have only been used once?
How many tags contain emojis?
What's the average username length?
What's the average rants per day count?
And so on.1
Started 2022 with working 2 full time contracts. Might look for 3rd since I'm still not even close to having put in more than 6 hours a day. The goal is to save up for my own apartment in a year. Wish me luck.
Helped me postponing my burnout by doing 1 page a day everyday at lunch break (or 2 steps, depending on the model)
Also helped a lot with realising its fine to break and customise stuff, that most hardware is just marketing & that the right tool, while being cheap, can save you a huge headache and lead to a better result.
Back in the day when I was a student, I travelled for almost 3 hours by train multiple times per month... I played Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 on my laptop all the way. Surprisingly, even while wearing large headphones, I connected with many people who saw me playing a game that they loved.
RCT2 remains a brilliant game today. The OpenRCT2 project is very well maintained and I can highly recommend it if you want to play it on your modern computer.
Me: Hey I haven't used these repos/tokens/files in a while, let's remove them to clear up some space
Day later, a colleague: Hey Alex, could you update this repo/token/file?
EVERY FUCKING TIME1
My friends, I'm enjoying my time off by doing tango and surf and stuff. On new year eve, Imma go do 4 days of tantra shit to become an amazing lover. Life is good. Have a good day.4
We learn more with blockers and errors.
I do learn more by doing each day rather than a tutorial/doc.
PS:There need to be a basic idea about the env we are working but It'snt mostly effective/practical to learn everything and work or implement in that.1
Good day. I come to ask a question
Does anyone know a free program for Windows to test RAM throughput? In GB/s
Did it ever happen with you that you came across a coding question( DSAlgo ) around 3-4 years ago, but you still failed to solve it to this day?
Despite already having a few years of professional experience dealing with Linux servers, I still, to this day, confuse, which environment file gets sourced and when...
There's /etc/profile, /etc/bashrc, ~/.bash_profile, ~/.profile, ~/.bashrc
I think it's... Bashrc for interactive shells, profile for login shells.
But then I have examples like "ssh user@server 'echo $var'" that... Don't source any of the files!
You can enable user environment files for SSH that get sourced whenever a user logs on through SSH (~/.ssh/environment / environment specified for a key in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys)
Is there some sort of master environment file that gets sourced *every* time, no matter what kind of shell starts?1
-continue working on a project which i haven't -committed for 3 days
-add 20 lines of code
-mistakenly deleted the route file
-restore the file (thinking I'm saved)
-open the file
-50+ lines of code gone2
Anyone ? ;p so far I like little code every day not related to work and some of "tasks" are pretty interesting (Ok, I mostly brute force everything, but it can be done so much better!)5
Wow. Wikipedia lists Aaron Swartz among diseased Wikipedians, with the usual condolences page. It's updated to this day.
I’m leaving the company I’m working for this week. Git really sick yesterday. Pinged hr about it and told them that I know that it looks bad being sick on the last days. Asked if I could use the sickdays we get, got refused and had to use a vacation day.2
Every day I’ll open up wordle, but before I enter a guess I’ll google “What is today’s wordle answer?” Then I’ll just enter in the answer to get a 1/6 every time. After that I’ll post my score to twitter and when people accuse me of cheating because I get a 1/6 every day I just lie and say “no I’m really smart that’s how I knew what the word was.”
Is that cheating??9
