I’ve been trying to become a better linux user and learn some low level details about an the kernel and distro I’m using.

Today after a week of struggling I successfully diskless-booted one linux machine off of another.
I’m so happy, proud, and satisfied! Can’t wait to learn more!

As a self taught C programmer starting comp sci in University, WTF is all this object oriented-ness. Constructors, parents, children, inheritance, polymorphism... I feel like more like an anthropologist than a programmer.

(But really, I get why it's better. Just so hard to learn)

Found out a senior dev threw me under the bus for a mistake I made while coding and it affected my raise. Not only was I never initially informed of the mistake, I was never told what went wrong and why it needed fixing. We also don't implement code reviews or anything of the sort. Seems like a great avenue for improvement and growth, right? 😑

Apparently some freaking man in my ex-team tried to learn Vim because he thought he could become more efficient but he spend more than two weeks trying it while delivering poor quality code with extra spaces, bad indentation and extra "wq" strings

Three years ago, tried to learn some JavaScript, failed miserably. Two years ago, managed to learn some Java through Udacity courses. Last year I started learning native Android development and got my first coding summer job. Now I'm back to learning JavaScript through Freecodecamp and that bitch ain't got shit on me no more!

So a few colleagues left the company leaving me as the most experienced person for our project and I hated to do all the babysitting for the new colleagues and trying to hold on against the new levels of pressure.

Why do people jump from c to python quickly. And all are about machine learning. Free days back my cousin asked me for books to learn python.
Trust me you have to learn c before python. People struggle going from python to c. But no ml, scripting,

Software engineering is how to run projects and it is compulsory to learn python and no mention of got it any other vcs, wtf?

What the hell is that type of college. Trust me I am no way saying python is weak, but for learning purpose the depth of language and concepts like pass by reference, memory leaks, pointers.

And learning algorithms, data structures, is more important than machine learning, trust me if you cannot model the data, get proper training data, testing data then you will get screewed up outputs. And then again every one who hype these kinds of stuff also think that ml with 100% accuracy is greater than 90% and overfit the data, test the model on training data. And mostly the will learn in college will be by hearting few formulas, that's it.

Learn a language (concepts in language) like then you will most languages are easy.

Coming up on a year as a junior dev, nobody told me about the vicious cycle of the more I learn the more I want to keep learning. I would rather code than do lots of stuff I used to love doing. And the lack of sleep, oh the lack of sleep. Best career ever!

The more time I get to play with Flutter, the more I am enjoying it. Google mentioned in their Udacity course that the best way to learn is to try and build an app that you use daily. So, I spent my Sunday building a UI clone of Facebook.

I'm a full-stack dev, I was considering CSS really hard to deal with for a long time. I have some friends who are bad at design and barely know how to use CSS and hate it.

Last year, I decided to learn CSS again after 6+ years of web development.

If you are a developer but hate CSS. maybe you should give it more time and learn it the right way.

You know, one of my fav ranters constantly shits on one of my main languages :P which is Java. But shit I would lie if I said that I have not learned something from what he has to say. Truth be told I am aware of the pitfalls and bad design decissions of a lot of my favorite langs: Python, PHP, JS, Java, Go etc. And I think it is benefitial to everyone to understand the things that our fav stacks fail at doing in order to become better devs.

A lot of things dev say are true, but this one I don't believe as much:
Many devs say that it's important for everybody to learn a bit of a basic programming language, to learn about computers and how programs are made. I disagree, I think that instead people should learn *how* things work. Ex, in my school people always use a VPN to get around the proxy. I don't care if they know basic statements, I think it's more important to learn how a VPN works. Most of them don't even know what VPN stands for. Am I the only one?

Im a network engineer just started to learn programing the past few weeks. I learnt more regarding programing from devRant than any ebooks.

I see more and more people encouraging people to learn Haskell. But why ? What can you do with it, that you would not do with another language? what have you done with haskell?

The more you learn languages like Javascript and Python, the more you realise that while every syntax differs, they're all essentially themes of the same if, else or and, type statements... This leads me to believe that with enough practice, it's possible to shortcut or pick up a new language progressively faster. Or am I just a melon?

As for myself, I learn much more from books than sitting day in, day out at work, doing more or less of the same things.

To me, this whole trial-and-error way of 'learning' is not really learning. I don't subscribe to this dogma. I don't 'learn' by messing up and fixing something. I need a full specification of why something works, when and how. I'm not satisfied by just being a code plumber.

This, next to the fact that most jobs in small startups don't provide a budget for you to expand your knowledge.

Only one goal : earn more money.

- Not to work for friendship, equity, kindness, craziness, etc. Code more for sole purpose to earn more
- Accept more projects whether I can develop or not to earn more

My professor wants me to work for him on a CRUD Server for a semester, I have some experience with JavaScript and API programming with Spring Boot. Should I take the offer and learn more about Node at home?

I have a course at my university about personal data and it feels more than a law course than a computer science one. I always make the mistake of choosing the wrong courses thinking that I might learn something. I learn nothing and I drop out of the course as a result.

I always forget that my university is not a place to learn anything. It's just for a fucking piece of paper no more, no less so I should take the easiest courses to just pass by.

Instead of giving exams at the end of the course, make the courses project based. Most cmps students at my university only memorize information (and even memorize code) just to get a grade, but if instead they had to present a project at the end of the semester they would learn much more and have more experience

Studying human languages.

They are so much more complex than a programming language and full of irregularities and stuff you can't really learn but have to 'feel'. This helped me a lot developing methods to learn new things quite easily and knowing foreign languages are kinda useful when I have to communicate with people too.

I mean the beauty in our industry is that you can learn almost everything online and for free. You learn some basics and then you build upon that knowledge to build something more complex. So why the hell should I pay so much money just to listen to someone who tells you the same stuff that you would've read online and for free anyway?

1. Use all my vacation days
2. Learn something that has nothing to do with computers (seriously I bore myself sometimes in conversation)
3. Drink more rum and learn about it at the same time
4. Make time for friends and family
5. No massive outages!

Mostly I want to step out of work and be more sociable

As a learner, what should I do to gain better knowledge while keeping up with the college?

-switching from intellij to vscode
-learn vim
-finish side projects
-live a healthier lifestyle (less meat, quality food)

-learn proper linux system administration

Going to go old school D&D. The more I learn in school, plus messing with code to improve my job at work, the more I feel like one of the Magi. The more I level up the more I can interpret the spell books. I may not be able to cast an amazing spell yet, but I can at least know when it is a good time to duck behind something because I fireball is coming my way.

Always interested in computers, started taking stuff apart, eventually found Linux, fell in love with that a bit and through command line learnt more.
Now finished a comp sci MSc and about to start a job. All I in know is there is a huge amount more to learn before I feel competent and confident. Excited about that though.

Really start with the band I planned with some friends.

Move to a bigger apartment with a retro and a hobby room.

Ensure that you have the right toolset. Learn more than just scripting.

I recently found myself :wq-ing inside PHPStorm more and more often so today I decided to install the IdeaVim plugin so this won't happen anymore (or rather so it'll do as I intended) and so I can better learn Vim :)

So I've made this plan of what I'm gonna learn/practice/study programming wise. Some of it involves learning new languages and I'm always told i shouldnt be hopping between languages but I really want to learn fucking PHP and C# even fucking C to help my python and it's not like its overwhelming but I hate when I get told to not bounce between languages IVE BEEN USING PYTHON FOR A YEAR AND A HALF I THINK ITS TIME FOR ME TO POLISH MY JAVASCRIPT AND LEARN A FEW MORE LANGAUGES LIEK FUCK

Work hard. Seriously. If its your first job, prepare yourself for 1 year in front. Learn programming, repeat, repeat more, fail, gain expertise. Surprise them with everything you do, blow the others out of the water with your knowledge.

Hello, everybody! Recently, I've decided to switch from Android development to web-development, mainly JavaScript. Ok, it is clear what to do and what to learn in frontend part. But what about backend? I have a some kind of a dream to learn Go. It is clear language it is a great pleasure to write on it, and I've started to learn it. In parallel I'm trying to study JS + Angular... Well, now I have some douts: is it effective to learn two different languages, which are quite new to me? Maybe, I should learn Node.js instead of Go? Right now it is clear, that this technology (node) is much more demanded. What path should I choose? To follow heart and learn Go? To follow mainstream trend and learn Node.js?

Sometimes I think, when my Computer would be human, he would punch me in the face for that gibberish I type in and call coding.

But yeah, then more I learn, then more I Level up as a Wizard.

when you start using vim more and more and learn about, sure it will take to start enjoying it because there is a learning curve that we can't ignore, than you will be upset that you didn't learn it before, and use it for daily use, the same can be said about linux

When I was about 11 years old (now 22) on Piczo messing around with little JavaScript hacks. I was fascinated with the idea that I could write code and have the computer/website do what I want. From then I went on to learn more and more, and the rest is history.

Been using more java lately (after like a year of not really touching it), determined to learn all the features j10 and up. Came to the conclusion that anyone who still thinks "java is verbose" is a fucking idiot.

4 years in high school (turbo Pascal, Java, c++, didn't learn much more than basics), summer course with Macromedia director, a few college courses/internship with html/css/flash.

Visual Studio Freaking 2017 and still no freaking XAML intellisense for freaking Xamarin.

I find that using unopinionated frameworks is more stressful for me because I have to make many design decisions myself which stresses me out. On the flip side, I learn so much about development in general which makes me happy.

Learn a lot more stuff about neural networks, machine learning and try to build and code my first neural network. I hope that I have enough patience for all of that 😬.

Did GPT have an unfair advantage compared to every general Chat-AI that comes after?

I mean, chatGPT was trained with data mostly generated by real humans. Now, since chatGPT and GPT4 is released, it has become more difficult to tell the content from bot and a Human apart. This means future chat AI will probably also by trained with data from other AI. And since AI doesn't understand context, and therefore make more factual error, future chat AI will learn more and more wrong things (generated by previous AI versions).

For some background, I vehemently prefer web development over anything else development-related.
