So this guy passed large objects as function arguments directly instead of referencing. What a jackass. So the program was slow as fuck AND taking up too much memory.
So yeah, I'm basically ranting about myself.2 -
I recently won a "Hack the Bank" competition where I had to hack an ATM and withdraw a large sum of money.
But what's funny, is that after the competition ended, the organizers installed Kali on the actual ATM.19 -

Just found out the backend developer I’m always complaining about. The one who:
- Can’t implement OAuth, and we have to have app users login every 24 hours because we have no way to generate new refresh tokens.
- Who used the phrase “your time zone is not my concern” to avoid building something that would let us inject test data.
- Who’s been debugging a critical bug affecting many users since December.
- Who can’t conduct API tests from external internet (you know, like the way the app will be in the wild) because it takes too much time.
- Who replies to Jira tickets only on a blue moon.
- Who has been 90% of the reason for my blood pressure situation
... is a fucking principal engineer in this company. In pecking order, his opinion should be considered more valuable than mine and everyone on my team.
I’ve just lost the will to live. How are big organizations THIS bad. Seriously, what promotion discussion did he go into
“So, you are a complete and utter bastard, nobody can stand to speak to you and you’ve yet to deliver anything of worth that actually works, over the course of several years ... ... ... interested in having your pay doubled??”20 -

You may know about my dumb CTO, if not, read here: https://devrant.io/rants/854361/...
Anyway, the dumbass emailed me this weekend asking “what is big data?”
So I replied: “...it’s when you use a large font in your code...”
He thanked me. I bet he will be at some presentation somewhere and will reference using large fonts in an IDE!!!10 -

Memo on August 4th: Staff, we're moving to the new building. IT, make sure the building is ready by September 15th.
IT: But the entire networking, surveillance, fire suppression (yes, we do that too) and power management systems have to be installed/redone.
Management: What's so hard about that? Just get it done.
Memo about a week ago: Timeline for move shifted to September 9th
IT: Sir, this request is unreasonable especially since you still want us to go through the usual procurement process of hiring vendors to deal with stuff.
Management: So you mean to tell me you can't handle that in the next couple weeks?
IT: We're a large organisation with ~300 employees. The data centre in the new building isn't even usable yet.
Management: I don't care. Make sure everything is placed and operational by the 5th. Stop making a mountain out of a mole hill!4 -

I fucking LOVE SUBLIME TEXT. I know some of you are impartial to your fully featured IDEs, but personally I just love a good old text editor with syntax highlighting. Sublime Text is amazing, and that's pretty much the point of this rant is to emphasize how much I recommend everyone trying out Sublime Text.40

Reading up on how floats are stored and it's pretty cool how you can store numbers as large as 3.4×10^38 in the same amount of memory that an integer can store only about 2 billion.

God this is mind numbing, only half way there... I think 😰3 -
The difference between small and large companies is astounding when applying for jobs.

Got a new job at a fairly large IT firm which deals with large scale business software for customers like the government's various agencies.
The very first job I'm assigned to: we have to strip down this software and make it more general, go ahead and delete everything related to <feature>.
I haven't had time to get to know the product and I've deleted hundreds of files and lines of code from related files...
I have a feeling this will bite me somehow5 -

Developed a feature 4 weeks ago with a lot of requirements from PO, even more from QA, wrote beautiful code/tests, was actually happy after deploy since everything worked beautifully.
Sales increased a lot because of this.
Story created in Jira today by mentioned PO: As a PO I want to have that feature removed because it doesn‘t work in IE9. PO decides so I had to do this.
So: What exactly is the best way to hide a body?3 -

Me: stares blankly
Him: you’re looking at me like I’m crazy. I’m looking for automating things to flag human mistakes.
Me (cursing silently): that’s why there are source control softwares and fucking code branches that get deployed and it’s not my problem if some shithead doesn’t merges his code to the central branch.3 -
I know streams are useful to enable faster per-chunk reading of large files (eg audio/ video), and in Node they can be piped, which also balances memory usage (when done correctly). But suppose I have a large JSON file of 500MB (say from a scraper) that I want to run some string content replacements on. Are streams fit for this kind of purpose? How do you go about altering the JSON file 'chunks' separately when the Buffer.toString of a chunk would probably be invalid partial JSON? I guess I could rephrase as: what is the best way to read large, structured text files (json, html etc), manipulate their contents and write them back (without reading them in memory at once)?4

I prefer a small company with good interpersonal bonds rather than a large company full of pretentious, obnoxious and disconnected co-workers.
I've been in both situations and the first one definitely beat the second one for me. Lunch at a large company.. shudders.. what a nightmare: forced topics, bullying, disconnect, bragging,.. Then again, small companies aren't innocent either; I've been to a crappy one too. It all depends on the people and how down-to-earth they are.
My two cents.3 -

Working on a very large project in C that will ultimately be open sourced and will almost definitely receive the attention of a lot of people - though it's not clear if it'll be good reception or bad reception.

The gap of data science in industry and academia is so large. As a data scientist in a large financial company, I see that people are still using traditional models such as linear regression and SVM, while people in academia keep inventing new concepts and techniques such as deep learning.
I am not saying that we should completely embrace deep learning, or stick to classic methods. But I just feel so surprised that the gap is so large...Sometimes I am even thinking whether I am doing the right "data science"...3 -

I once worked as the sole web developer for an in-house agency for a large corporation. The guy I reported to there was by far the best boss I ever had. Most weeks I wouldn't even see him.
He was smart enough to know the web was important to the business, but humble enough to say he didn't understand it. He rarely ever questioned the decisions I made.
The only downside to the job was it was part of a large corporation. -

So a couple of months ago I had some stability issues which seems to have caused Baloo go crazy and create an 1.7 exabyte index file. It was apparently mainly empty as zfs compressed it down to 535MB
Today I spent some time trying to reproduce the "issue" and turns out that wasn't that hard.
So this little program running on FreeBSD with a compressed (lz4) zfs dataset creates an 1.9 Exabyte large file, nicely compressed down to 45KB :)
#include <stdio.h>
#include <fcntl.h>
#include <unistd.h>
#include <sys/limits.h>
int main(int argc, char** argv) {
int fd = open("bigfile.lge", O_RDWR|O_CREAT, 0644);
for (int i = 0 ; i < 1000000000; i++) {
lseek(fd, INT_MAX, SEEK_CUR);
}
write(fd, " ",1);
close(fd);

Lesson learned, never use Vim's 'd' to move a large chunk of code from file to file. Need to move a large chunk of Rust code from one file to another, when I quit the session and edit the file needs to be pasted, the entire content, disappeared, divided into atoms.
Edit: I found that the 'd' command means 'delete command', so that may explain why. But still.2 -

Looking for help starting with DevOps.
Does anyone know of a site or forum where you can talk about general coding/scripting patterns rather than just asking specific questions?
Bear with me, this may be a bit longer than most posts here.
I'm a self-taught admin/tech working with one colleague (who's also mostly self taught) at a high school, managing both clients and servers.
We've been doing most things manually bit I'm looking into converting as much work as possible into more of a DevOps setup, with Powershell-scripts for multi step tasks.
I want to do this for a number of reasons. Having a script doing a number of steps would cut down on time spent on individual tasks and minimize the risk that a step is missed or, perhaps even worse, mistyped. Also it's important that I actually learn what I'm doing, why something works and why something fails.
As and example, I have a powershell-script which moves a student from one year to another (basically they have user names with a two-digit prefix based on the year they started and a suffix with two letters from their first names and four from their last names) if they need to repeat a grade.
It basically renames the account in the AD with the correct year-prefix, changes the samAccountName, renames Home and Profile-directories on disk and changes paths on the profile-tab in AD, moves the user into a new OU and security group etc.
It works as intended if the user account to be renamed exists and there's no name conflict with the new name. But I'd like for the script to validate that there's no problem with user names, source and target security groups and OUs etc. and eventually split the script up into smaller clearly defined functions for better readability.
However, I don't want someone to just write the script for me, I'd prefer to be able to discuss script flow and come to my own conclusions and solutions.1 -
Does anyone here prefer dynamic languages for large scale projects?
If so, have you looked into Crystal? Why would you prefer Ruby over Crystal? (Nearly or exactly identical code but one is supported by static typing) -

As a developer of system critical software I tend to be obsessed about efficiency. Sometimes a short function is as efficient as it needs to be. Other times you need to build a large complicated structure to reach the efficiency needed for large or complex data. This caused me to pause and have respect for the efficiency of the creators of modern day windmills. I may have killed 2 birds with one stone, but am in awe of killing thousands of birds with one windmill.3

What tools/apps or scripts can i use to stress test a link between to sites. May involve sending across large files, or data. Also produce graphs and reports ...
-
- Have the app running perfectly on heroku.
- App does some serious calculations which, depending on amount of data, takes a long time to process
- Heroku timesout after request takes longer than 30 secs...
- Need to move from heroku to aws... No devops experience...
- Damn... 🙃
Any suggestions? The procedure cannot be put into a worker queue so thats out of the equation.2 -
