I did a fucking scientific study about fucking rants and found a fucking high correlation between the usage of "fuck" and the number of fucking upvotes.17

A devRant Update!
Hey everyone,
We thought now would be a great time for a devRant summer update on what we've added recently and what we've been working on.
Highlights since our last update:
- We launched devRant++, a supporter program for people who want to help us cover our costs while getting some cool extra features (a supporter badge on rants/comments/profile, reserved spot on our in-app supporter list, ability to edit rants/comments for up to 30 minutes instead of 5, and thanks to immediate user feedback, we also added the ability to post a rant every 1 hour instead of 2, and post comments that are up to 2,000 characters instead of 1,000!) We are extremely happy and thankful for the great response the program has gotten and we plan to continue to improve it using your feedback.
- We added the ability to subscribe to a user's rants. This makes it so you get a notification whenever that user posts a new rant!
- We added an "active discussions" feature (available in the "more" tab on the right). If you're looking to join a conversation happening in the moment, then this feature will help you discover those rants. It shows rants that have recently been commented on so if it's a topic that interests you, you can easily get in on the discussion!
Some stuff we have in the pipeline:
- More fun avatar stuff, including fun new OS/language-themed pets
- More perks for the devRant++ subscriber program - if you have anything you'd like to see, please let us know and we will try to make it happen!
- We will be testing some stuff to help classify rant types (rants, jokes, questions, etc.) in order to create a more personalized experience
- On that note, we're also going to take some more time to do some work on the algo as we haven't done much in terms of improvement since the initial smart algo launched
- Community projects page update - we've been slacking on updating the page and apologize for that. If you have created a devRant-related project and it's not on the community page, please resend it to david@hexicallabs.com (even if you sent it already) so we can make sure it gets added. Sorry about that!
A note on community etiquite regarding voting on content:
We've always believed that one of the most important and awesome experiences on devRant is getting your content noticed and appreciated by others. If you enjoy a piece of content, you should upvote it. If you enjoy 500 pieces of content, you should upvote them all. People really appreciate others enjoying their rants and comments so let them know if you do! If you don't like content, you can downvote it with the relevant reason. What we don't encourage is voting on content that you haven't actually looked at or spamming upvotes in mass for content you're not even actually reading/viewing. While we don't encourage that, it's not explicitly disallowed so we won't impose any penalty for it.
What is strictly prohibited and enforced is using scripts or automated procedures for voting on content. Anyone who is caught doing that will have their account deleted without warning. While very rare, we caught a couple of people doing that this week and both accounts in question were immediately deleted once discovered. To be clear, this is the practice of explicitly using a script or automation to mass vote on content. You will NEVER be banned/deleted for voting on a lot of content manually, even if you vote quickly and on lots of stuff. We just want to make that clear becuase this is not meant to discourage people from voting, it is only regarding votes not placed by humans. So if you're a human voting on content, you have nothing to worry about, we promise!
Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions or feedback on any of this. We love constructive feedback and in the past it has gone a very long way to improving and advancing the devRant community. And as always, thank you to everyone who contributed to the community in any way, we really appreciate it and want to keep making your experienfce better.
Happy ranting,
~David and Tim (Team devRant)

Some sort by Date, some by length, others by upvotes. But devrant's algorithm is so great it sorts by sarcasm.4

So my manager (a 29 y/o, who hardly can use a mac) walks towards me with a hint of panic in his eyes.
Manager: Hey commander keen, do you know how to use vertical look up in excel, I've tried, and looked at tutorials.
Me: yeah I really don't know excel (and not willing to learn, especially on the fly), I don't even have excel installed, I can write I script that does what you want.
Manager: No you have enough on your plate
3 hours later
Manager: hey I still can't figure it out, could you solve it with a script, won't that take to long
Me: no send me the files, Ill do it with a script.
I start writing 2 for loops and wait for the file, 10 ish minutes later its basicly done, just need to put in the column indexes.
I send a message on both slack channels (hey are you going to email or slack me the file)
After a hour I walk to his desk and again ask him for the file.
Manager a good 2 hours later on slack: Hey I just send you the file, I hope its not to much work, it has to happen asap.
So if you have kids, and they are not that bright by some kind of birth defect, don't worry, they can always become a manager.
But you can't get me down today. I hit 2000 upvotes and the employer is unknowingly a proud sponsor for reading and writing all these rants and comments :-) thnx devrant8 -
Fuck you devrant, pseudo funny remotely devrelated things get more upvotes than juicy outbursts of rage16
-
At job interview.
Interviewer: What are your goals in life?
Me: Well... Right now... Getting 1000 upvotes in devRant so I can get that fat cat on my avatar....6 -
After hitting 175 upvotes only to find out the stress ball threshold got bumped to 200, I gave in and bought it.
I feel like I've made an in game purchase.6 -
150K, fucking finally!
And no, it's not 'just about the upvotes' for me, I already explained that one numerous times.
Yay!27 -
Good guy @dfox,
When he sees a good rant without upvotes, he upvotes it.
We need more like @dfox.
Be like @dfox :)12 -
other website/app: here, upload a picture as your avatar
devrant: here, have this rpg like builder with plenty options, with everything from the shirt to the glasses and unlocks based on upvotes
i love this app5 -
This is where everything started. I got the chance to work with actual production code. While it is very fun to work with, in some places it's also very frustrating. And this is from where, most of my rants come from.
Thank you @dfox and @trogus for making such a beautiful community.
The best part of this community is I never have to think or take time to make jokes or posts so that I can get upvotes. I've always wanted likes or retweets or reddit upvotes. But it never worked out because I have to think so much to make clever comments or posts. Most of the time, I gave up.
But in devRant, all I do is just share what's happening in my daily dev life. My frustrations, my happiness. That's all it takes. Everyone understands, everyone cares and everyone loves.
Over time, thanks to devRant, I've understood that I was part of the wrong community. This is the community that I deserve, this is the community that every dev deserves.
Thank you all. I love you. And I promise, more rants are coming :D
Especial thanks to @Yeah69 @kevbost @yarwest @tisaconundrum @Linux @donkeyScript . I have no idea why you guys all of a sudden rapidly upvoted me. Although I would love to reach 10k naturally but won't complain haha8 -
- Be a Devrant lurker.
- Only created an account for upvoting.
- Desperately want that cool profile picture
- Need rant for points.
Why is my appreciation through upvotes not enough? -_-9 -
Wow, I dont use mainstreem languages, so my questions dont have that much upvotes.
Now I have a question-ban from stackoverflow :(
This isnt really fair...20 -
What I feel when browsing recent lately.
How to get ++:
1. Get Google Allo
2. Ask question about Siri
3. Screenshot and post
4. ???
5. Profit! -
Well, this has been one hell of an awesome ride already. I’m at 70K+ and the biggest ranter as for reputation (those upvote thingies). Although I don’t care about being the biggest one currently, I do take pride in it but I’ll get back to that one later on. (I’ll very likely lose the first place at some point but oh well, couldn’t care less :))
I joined back in May last year through an article I found on https://fossbytes.com (thanks a bunch!), joined and was immediately addicted. The community was still very tiny back then and I’ve got to say that getting upvotes was also not the easiest :P. But, I finally found a place where I could rant out my dev related frustrations: awesomeness. I very much remember how, at first, reaching 1K was my biggest devRant dream and it seemed to be freaking impossible. Then I reached 1K and that was such a big achievement for me! Then the ‘dream’ (read these kind of dreams (upvotes ones) as things that would be awesome to reach not just for the upvotes but for participating, commenting, ranting, discussing and so on within the community, so as in, it shows your contribution) became 10K which seemed even more impossible. Then I reached 10K and 20K seemed freaking impossible but I got there a little faster and from that point on it’s been going fast as hell!
It’s always been a dream for me to become a very big but also ‘respected’ or especially well known user/person somewhere because that pretty much never happened and well, having dreams isn’t wrong, is it?
The biggest part of that dream, though, was that it would be a passion of mine that would get me there but except for Linux, the online privacy part was something I always deemed to be ‘just impossible’. This because irl I ALWAYS get (it’s getting less though) ridiculed for being so keen on my privacy and teaching others about it. People find me very paranoid right away but the thing is that if they ask me to explain and I actually present evidence for my claims, it’s waved away as if it’s nothing. (think mass surveillance, prism, encrypted services, data breaches and so on)
I never thought I’d find any other people who would have the same views as I do but fucking hell, I found them within this community!
Especially the fact that I’ve grown this much because of my passion is something I am proud of. It’s also awesome to see that I’m not the only one who thinks like this and that I’ve actually find some of you on here :)
So yeah, thanks to everyone who got me where I am now!
Also a big thanks to sir Dfox and Trogus for putting your free time into making this place happen.
Love you peoples <3 and to anyone ‘close’ on here I forgot, if you match any of the comments as for privacy/friendliness etc, don’t worry, those nice things also apply to you! My memory just sucks :/
P.S. Please do NOT comment before I comment that I’m done with commenting because I’ve got a lot of comments coming :D61 -
So my husband and best friend are arguing that I get upvotes just because I got boobs. Is it true?34
-
How stackoverflow works(for me):
- First some guru will downvote it & someone comments saying it is duplicate/easy/stupid/should be somewhere else.
- Then a very generous person comes in, says its a valid question, answers & upvotes it.
- After few hours/days, other people come looking for the same question & then they upvote it.
This is called a true happy ending.4 -
!rant
Just read a DevRant comment and it made me laugh out loud. Looked at the user and it turned out to be an old comment of mine. Looked at the upvotes ... at least I think I'm funny. 😂3 -
Hey @dfox and @trogus, was wondering, are there any plans for items higher than 20K upvotes? I'm at more than 120K now and I'd like a new item and also maybe something to work towards :)
Also, I'm just asking/wondering, I know what a busy life is. This is nothing more than a question, not demanding anything! (I'm deffo not in the position to demand anything)
Thanks!24 -
Am I the only one who, on seeing a post/rant on devRant with 49 or 99 or 149 or 199 existing ++... upvotes it to get it to an even number and then reads it?11
-
I spent all my saving on a new PC... I wanted the stickers... But no rant of mine gets enough upvotes :/6
-
In an alternate universe, devs live in their own country.
They make their own rules and dictate how much they are paid. They maintain the entire world’s infrastructure.
They don’t go to work, since their entire country is the workplace and guess what? Cold beers are free(a thank you from the beer company guys for coming up with all their inventory management systems)
Pizza is free too.
There is no government (laws are passed depending on upvotes on devRant )
No racism, sexism or any other ism ending words . Devs just code.
Oh, and the state police, preferably known as keyboard warriors patrol the streets and offenders are punished by limited internet speeds. 😂. It is said some actually commit suicide because of this unbearable punishment.
Fuck yeah they have coffee farms. That’s the only thing they don’t accept as *gratitude from other nations because those sons of bitches might fuck that up too.
And everyone drives teslas 😂
Okay I have to get back to work now. That multi universe travel machine won’t buy itself.15 -
// TODO create awesome rants here to entertain other devs to earn lot of upvotes to get a devRant stressball5
-
Damn you stackoverflow!
Why can't we declare an answer as outdated or deprecated or just plain out wrong!
I like that you have so many questions, yet when the correct solution is a 0-upvoted by a 0-rep user hidden at the very bottom between a huge amount of wrong answers and whereas the *accepted* yet wrong answer has upvotes that are skyhigh, it just wastes my time.
All that is achieved is a feedback loop enforcing a faulty answer will accumulate ever more upvotes. And waste somebody else's time in the future as well.
I cannot add the correct information, as that would harm the author's intent. I cannot edit the faulty answer to state that there is a better answer, as that would be an attempt to reply. I can downvote it, yet that just a tiny drop on a very hot stone.
All I can do is add a comment pointing to a correct answer, yet that is easily overlooked.
Come on, stackoverflow! This is madness!6 -
> get 5 upvotes on Stack Overflow for an answer with some code
> update your profile to "influencer"5 -
2017 Recap + DEVBANNER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
1. So, let's recap my 2017 first. It was awesome
Here is some list that I can remember
- finding my hobby (fsx, vatsim)
- finding computers aren't genius
- creating a new language
- major improvements in my unity skills
- found out i am friendly
- getting a job at google in a dream
- creating my banner in krita --> devbanner collab :D
- Logo creation fail
- CS class apply fail
- getting free stickers for the first time of my life
- getting death threats (lol)
- finishing my first ever big c# project
- got offensive words from a bot that i am a f***ing d***head.
- getting downvotes after creating such a shitty meme
- getting my rant featured in twitter
- finding that my friends love my game
- getting a sneak peak at the src of devrant
- coding with turbo c
- not using git cuz too lazy
- finds out msdn is god
- slowly hating unity, but likes it cuz it is using c#
- reaching level 2 in google foobar
- started 100+ projects this year and finished about 6 of them.
- devRant motivated me a lot
2. devBanner stuffs
So, how it all started is when I wanted to create my own logo. Some people will remember it. The one with arrows and cozyplales written on it. Then, I created my own banner with Krita (their text tool sucked). After that, due to some suggestions by the community, I decided to create a collab. From then, many people contributed to the devBanner project. Special thanks to @Kimmax for his awesome prototype of the frontend made during I was sleeping.
Now, before I talk more, I want to talk something. I don't post a rant about my collab cuz i want to get upvotes. I just want more people to use this simple creation software. You can literally use them anywhere, and it is FOSS.
Well....
If you want to create again, you can do so at https://devbanner.center
If you want to contribute, please do so by visiting https://github.com/devBanner
We are looking for a skilled frontend dev who can do the basic web stuffs. (we don't use frameworks currently for our frontend)
---------------------
Thanks everyone for making 2017 awesome. Can't wait to welcome 2018. Happy new year everyone, and I will drop my banner here.21 -
I think I'm doomed when it comes to posting the kinds of rants that get upvotes. The pattern I've noticed is that profanity-laden rants get more love than ones that are more tame. I was raised old-school, so profanity isn't my thing. Guess I'll just sit back and watch.6
-
Turns out apple doesn't allow apps that use GPS on iPads without a GPS module. Decent idea, 100% undocumented. One stack overflow answer, zero upvotes.1
-
When you desperately waiting for upvotes to get those stickers. So you excited over devrant notifications and then somebody commented on your post without an upvote...
I mean that's just mean....11 -
It's my birthday and I just got enough upvotes for some stickers.
We need rubber ducks now devRant.6 -
When your question on StackOverflow has more than 5 upvotes and an accepted answer with around 10 upvotes, and then some asshole moderator decides it is a duplicate and deletes it.3
-
What do you guys call the ++'s on the post?
1. Increments
2. Upvotes
3. Plus pluses (lol)
4. Something else
Reply with your choice🦄37 -
When talking about devRant, which terminology do you use for ++s?
A: Plus pluses
B: Plus ones
C: Upvotes
D: Likes16 -
I'm internally moved from envy feelings against the very first users of StackOverflow.
The ones that got tens of thousands of upvotes for questions like "how to set the width of a div element?"3 -
I wonder why stack overflow gets so much hate on here. To me, it is a tremendously helpful community. People are usually pleasant and forthcoming.
I sometimes see questions closed as "not constructive", even though it has thousands of upvotes, but generally, if you follow the rules, you'll have a good time.
Maybe people want SO to be something it is not, or maybe people behave differently around different technologies. I mostly find Python, Djang and general web answers, and they are fine5 -
Back in the days DevRant used to be a small community. A rant would be seen by all, with a higher chance of marking the stress ball incentive target.
Now, those upvotes are distributed among many more users who have the privilege of upvoting to what they find more interesting.
However, this is not a rant about who has a better chance of winning a stress ball; it's about feeling proud how this community grew so healthy, and tailor made for developers!! :)
Kudos! I love this community6 -
That feeling when someone sees your rant, upvotes it and then checks out and upvotes other rants of yours.6
-
I want my dual-monitors :c Seems like I need to double my amount of upvotes then. But I want to match my avatar to my real setup! :c1
-
Two days ago I went to change an Nvidia driver on my Linux mint partition and it ended up breaking everything, all my fault because I'm so new to Linux, anyways to dig that hole deeper I looked for ways to fix it, found some random command that managed to destroy mint even more lol. I had no start menu and cinnamon kept going into recovery mode.
But the next day after spending time working through what to do I managed to fix it, I basically downloaded mintmenu again and uninstalled the graphics driver
All in all I think I've come closer to learning how fun Linux is, it was fun fixing what I broke rather than actually clean installing mint again.
Morale of the story: don't randomly use commands found on the net that has 3 upvotes lol9 -
I want my '+' to freeze at '+1998'. Because that's when I was born and it would look cool. Please don't ruin it guys..18
-
*Looks up advice on how to implement something
*Finds reasonable, well written advice on Stack Overflow that recommends not using <insert latest framework here>
*Ignores advice
*Two hours of exasperated coding and git resets later
*Goes back and upvotes advice -
Whenever I see "404" I instinctively add "x not found" after it in my head. Like if this got to 404 upvotes, I'd immediately think "404 upvotes not found." Anyone else do this? It doesn't matter what the context is, I ALWAYS do it. It's almost annoying.3
-
!rant
I don't even care about getting upvotes with rage rants. It's just very nice to have a place where I can out all my rage and anger and where people actually understand me instead of staring at me like 'woah, calm down'. I feel like I'm actually understood here, something I don't often have irl. This is why I f*cking love devRant.1 -
I have written one answer on stackoverflow that got more than 100 upvotes \o/
It's about downloading google fonts and it's not even on par with the other answers. /o\ -
Hey guys! So I'm new new here and it would be great to get a few upvotes so that I can create my avatar as soon as possible. I love the community and I'm planning to stay active for time to come.
Thanks :)12 -
Finally got enough upvotes to get my avatar blue hair again!!
Now to not delete my account again and save up for a kitty 🐱 -
Everytime dfox upvotes one of my rants I feel like a fangirl inside. Think of a big hairy guy reacting like a fangirl.. disturbing isn't it ? 😂7
-
When I see someone with 14 upvotes, I'll just up vote so that they get the stickers (or I really find it funny/relatable 🙃)4
-
I'm starting to think we might need a global union for developers. I have been reading the comments today and it looks like a lot us getting way underpaid.
New features should be a moment of joy if they are released. So far so good. People really liked the idea of working together on opensource project. The app is updated. But then we encountered a major problem. It looks like some of us are getting so underpaid that they can't pay for the 14 dollar it cost to start the opensource project they want. We must rebel against this.
14 dollar, how much is 14 dollar. How many hobbies cost 14 dollar to start up. From running to collecting stamps. Its going to cost you more And how many hobbies are you as passionate about as your own open source project.
The next great thing is that it is show in the place where developers are eagerly looking to join a opensource project. And will probably join you're product because I'm sure between all of us there are tons of wonderfull ideas just waiting to be build.
And for me personal I do not mind supporting an app that I use almost every day. And just keeps growing without annoying ads.
So you should be more then willing to pay 14 dollars. And are ready to start recruiting your team.
And if you really can't pay. Your house burned down, you needed it for food. Your only pc is beyond saving. You can be a positive force in this community and do pay with upvotes.
But if you are to much a cheapskate to pay 14 dollars well, I think I was clear enough.5 -
I fucking hate Reddit
Because I don’t interact with other peoples post too much but do so when the post is mine, I’m considered spammer.
The 90/10 rule is ridiculous.
This morning I got banned from r/internetisbeautiful because of this stupid rule.
Not because my website is not beautiful, hell, it got thousands upvotes. But because I used the same domain for different unrelated projects, same way you can have different GitHub pages under one user.
Fuck this, fuck18 -
Sometimes I get scared that one of my posts is gonna get so many downvotes that it'll remove my previous +1000 that I have.7
-
A C++ question. Correct answer will get you a virtual thug glasses & a cigar if you're into that , and upvotes (:
#include <stdio.h>
int main(void) {
int i = 4;
int* p = &i;
i = 8;
printf("i divided by *p is: %d\n", i/*p);
return 0;
}
What is the result of running this code?18 -
Really now?
AWS, #1 cloud provider with their #1 cloud database DynamoDB, all shiny, highly dynamic NoSQL, your data schema could change any second...
then DynamoDB errors out when one of your values is an empty string? {"foo":""} is impossible to store?
Like nobody ever saw or used empty strings a a value or what? There are tons of upvotes to fix this.
I just have to imagine the Product owner standing there: "No,no,no. They are just using it wrong if their data has empty strings as value. Won't fix!"4 -
If someone like @ptls44 missed the april fools joke or wants the binary upvotes back, here's a quick script I did: https://github.com/7twin/...10
-
@dfox bug report time (at least it looks like one)!
I have ~400 upvotes atm.
For shoes in pic you need 1500 of them.
How i did this?
I equipped them when they were free afaik.5 -
I am going to post cryptic ass shit on y'alls shit that gives over a fake sense of me knowing what I am talking about in terms of faking my credentials from working on big companies and having tons of knowledge of software development in an effort to convince you all in of my credentials to get massive upvotes by making you all think I am intellectually and technologically superior to you in multiple senses! I will use a thesaurus for this btw! not my general day to day speech! after all, it will give my fake ideals of credibility more success and acceptance! remember! i worked for all companies starving kids in different parts of the world did! nothing but my word for it!
Some people really need to consider the shit they read online from people that have been caught bullshitting all the time.
9/10 your shit is good enough, stop letting phonies make you feel inadecuate over their supposed success in this works ffs16 -
Aha. Worked hard to maintain a reputation on SO. Mail came yesterday saying all my upvotes were fake, and suspended my account.2
-
So, apparently you guys are having some trouble understanding wk46.
When someone suggests the topic, you should not actually reply with a rant you'd post in that topic.
Keep the content and post it when the topic gets used.
(you'll also get more upvotes since it'll be a rant instead of a comment)8 -
Protip to get free upvotes on Stackoverflow:
Ask something about Behat and make sure your questions looks smart. No one will ever answer but you'll get lots upvotes. FML.4 -
How do I promote my open source projects?
I mean, @ai (Andrey Sitnik) have published nanoid and received about 600 github stars in just one first day. I have recently published Tears, webserver for SPA, and received only 7 stars, all of them from my friends.
I've tried posting on hackernews (3 upvotes), github tags, several gitter chats, with absolutely no impact.
So how do I promote my projects?4 -
OH MY GOD! I really just want to comment to that guys answer on stackoverflow, that he's right and his answer works... but I have only 4 reputation - because I'm a good dev searching intensively, finding an answer to almost everything a can think of!
If I ever get over 15 reputation (it's so sad, I know) stackoverflow will explode because of all my upvotes that are not counted until then... At least something satisfying here :/2 -
Does anyone ever have this, that, when you see a post with loads of upvotes/comments you're like 'fuck, I really should've posted that myself (insert weeks or whatever) ago... '1
-
Lots of questions going on about devRant. Just want to make devRant better.
1. Please tell the update intervals of upvotes and downvotes. Is there a delay? Doesnt really matter but i see many times i got a upvote notif but my score didnt increased...
2. Duplicate image algo is so poor. I know it is only in beta, but i see so many reposts which has the same pic but only with the resolution different or the image with the devrant watermark.
3. Minor, tags should be also saved when exitting the post rant activity.
4. Feature request : go to top, bottom in rant
5. Please make web app accessible in mobile. I think you check the user agent for the web app, but can you make it available to mobile users who cant download the app?
6. When accessing the web app in mobile, i type devrant.io/feed
Then, by the wonderful intent you made, it opens the app automatically. I was writing a rant, but it was all deleted.
7. Any new podcasts and cartoons planned?
8. Still bug not fixed.
Write a comment in a long rant.
Delete the comment you just wrote.
You cant reply to the last person comment.
Thanks.6 -
Can you rant about yourself?
I was reading about the AWS outage, with little to no interest. I didn't know what it was and thus figured it wouldn't affect me.
Some time goes by and I come up with this 300++ vote post. I'm witty, I'm smart, but when I want to upload a photo it doesn't work.
Must be the app right? I restart, nope nothing. Whatever..
Sometime later I have a dashing new photo for tinder. Surely to give me all the matches. Nope, can't upload it.
Must be my phone or Internet then.
Restart everything, nothing is working. Complete madness, no devRant upvotes and I'm still single.
I surrender, give up. Which is one of the worst things to do for me as a dev.
Today. Which is the cherry on the cake. I finally see my connection to the incident. I feel stupid and annoyed by myself.
God dammit Julian, pay attention.
</rant>2 -
I'm the most ignored user of devrant regarding last week. Can you believe it? These stats summarize the amount of times that a message is not upvoted. It doesn't count mention's tho. A lot of people do not upvote if they mention. For more heartbreaking stats, see comments.
Also, poor GPT, always directly asked but one of the least appreciated by upvotes59 -
It's ironic that posts asking for upvotes are a frequent source of upvotes for the people who reply, saying, "don't ask for upvotes."4
-
Sometimes I would like to rank the intensity of my likes/upvotes/++'es (depending on what social media I'm using). I know this would make things extra complicated and it would be a bad idea. But sometimes I upvote something because I agree with a statement or I just like the post, but sometimes a post makes me feel so understood or it makes me laugh for 3min straight and that makes me want to upvote it 3 times as much as the others. But I guess that's where the favourite function comes into play3
-
Based on @darksideofyay "poll feature" request I made a simple bot to make them.
Just post this as a comment:
@PollBot Q: <Your question>?
A:
- <Answer 1>
- <Answer 2>
// Up to 10 answers
It will post a comment for each answer, just upvote the one you like (look at the upvotes to see the result of the poll).
P.S. It's not ideal and it's running on a mini PC in my house, so it could fail sometimes. :P34 -
Devrant is the only platform I'm considered to be even remotely funny.

A big, fat FUCK YOU to everyone who pushes out app-updates with generic "Improvements for speed and reliability" changelogs. I hope you and all your descendants, relatives, friends and pets get huge, hairy, painful warts between your buttcheeks that grow larger every day and return after every attempt to have them removed. Fuck you, and fuck your bullshit updates.
And if there are any devs on devRant guilty of this behaviour, fuck you too. I hope your sexual organs rot and fall off, and that you lose all your upvotes.7 -
The good ol’ days of devRant where one could get +600 upvotes for a corny joke
https://devrant.com/rants/284300/...
(I’m not jealous 😁)7 -
there was a time when people were begging for upvotes for stress ball and stickers now it is abt avatar. different times different measures3
-
Nuclear controversy:
I like how devrant doesn't show the ranter's name in the feed, so that people can upvote in a more unbiased way, otherwise let's be honest girls will cause a rant points gender gap.
Every time I see a girl's profile badge, it has thousands of upvotes, I think some IT folks boot up a whole peep show in their head just out of seeing a female profile.
(don't take that seriously, it's just a funny thought, I don't think it's true, but it's worth the joke)5 -
Finally got the swag! After more than 2 years. Sent a mail for it to @dfox in 2016. You needed 20 upvotes to get the swag then. He sent it, but I never received. A month or so ago, was cleaning up my mailbox and came across the email, and thought would ping him again about it just for the sake of it! I finished college in 2017, got a job and moved to another city. Guess what?! He replied, gave him my updated address and he sent it again!
So thanks a lot @dfox!1 -
daily reminder (most of you don't need it i know) that reddit is full of the most ignorant and dumb people on the planet
thought i could hop into comments on a /r/worldnews post for interesting discussion and discourse, no, its just idiotic neckbeards trying to one up eachother on painfully cringe doomer phrases and / or who can get the most upvotes from their godawful dumbass pun

--- Visits stackoverflow for an answer
. You find the accepted answer amazing... Yep this is what I'm looking for. (You copied the code into your source)
.
.
. scrolled down a little bit
.
.
. You saw another answer with a higher upvote. Ooh lala, this is fucking cool. (You copied and replace your source again)
.
. scrolled down once again
.
. You noticed yet another answer which is the most recent and a lot shorter implementation of what you just copied. (No shit! You copied and replace your source yet another time)
.
. scrolled down for the last time maybe and it looks like the previous was the last.
. But then...
.
. you saw a comment with lots of upvotes even more than the accepted answer and this comment points to a link.
.
. You clicked the link with your mouth salivating waiting to see what holds at the other side of the world which amount this so much upvotes.
.
. And Tadaaaa 404 not found!
.
. You feel hunted by that mysterious link for the rest your life... -
So they give us a stress ball if a rant gets that many "upvotes". I find that really stressful, waiting and waiting.. And never get there. In the end of the day we are stressed af and with no stress ball 😂.
But hey, who da hell get stressed for this little? We devs are already stress free...3 -
Noop
18k+ upvotes.
Not a single post.
He's the total inversion of a narcissist. Hes a ghost.
He must be the most boring person on earth or the most interesting/mysterious.
Like, what is he hiding? No posts, no comments. Just upvotes.
My bet: Hes an international fugitive or a spy. Get em!
Who else wants to baselessly speculate about long time users who keep to themselves and or highlight their favorite mime?9 -
When your one rant that showed real potential to get you that stress ball has now slowed. Each new upvote revives the hope and you think - c'mon c'mon, nearly there!8

I have upvoted good questions, helpful comments and useful answers on SO for a long time now, although I don’t have enough reputation (15 needed to count upvotes).
Once I reach this 15 points get ready for a big rain of upvotes 😁2 -

How about this feature for StackOverflow:
If the questioner checkmarked an answer, but another answer gets 10 times more upvotes than the checkmarked answer, send a notification telling the questioner to re-consider the checkmark.
Wouldn't this bring peace and prosperity to devDom?6 -
Jilano had not even posted a single rant ever and having more than 30000 upvotes.
This changed my idea
"Code sometimes lie
Comment never does."
Commendable!!!1 -
There has been a post today about the existence of too many js frameworks. Which reminds me of this awesome post https://hackernoon.com/how-it-feels...
At first I thought someone was corpseposting, as it is my understanding that the js ecosystem is calming down a bit. But then I noticed that post got almost 20 upvotes. So here's my thoughts:
(I'm not sure what I'm ranting about here, as it feels kinda broad after writing it. I think it's kinda valid anyhow.)
I'm ok with someone expressing frustration with js. But complaining about progress is definitely off to me.
How is too many frameworks a bad thing?
How does the variety and creation of more modern frameworks affect negatively developers?
Does it make it hard to understand each of these new frameworks?
Well, there's no need to. Just because it has a logo and some nice badges and says it will make you happy doesn't mean you should use it.
You just stick to the big boys in the ecosystem and you'll be fine for a while.
Does it make you feel compelled to migrate the stack of every project you did?
Well, don't. If you don't like being on the bleeding edge of js, then just stick to whatever you're using, as long as it's good code.
But if a lot of companies decided to migrate to react (among others frameworks), it's because they like the upsides: the code is faster to write, easier to test and more performant.
In general, I'm more understanding/empathic with beginner js programmers.
But I have for real heard experienced devs in real life complain about having to learn new frameworks, like they hate it.
"I just want to learn a single framework and just master it throughout my life" and I think they're lowering the bar.
There's people that for real expect occupying positions for life, make money, but never learn a new framework.
We hold other practitioners to high standards (like pilots or doctors), but for some reason, some programmers feel like they're ok with what they know for life.
As if they couldn't translate all they learned with one framework to another.
Meanwhile our lives are becoming more and more intertwined with technology and demand some pretty high standards. Standards that historically have not been met, according to thousands of people screaming to their devices screens.
Even though I think the "js can be frustrating" sentiment is valid, the statement 'too many js frameworks is bad' is not.
I think a statement like 'js frameworks can go obsolete very quickly' is more appropriate.
By saying too many js frameworks is a bad thing you're
1) Making a conspiracy theory as if js devs were working in tandem to make the ecosystem hard,
But people do whatever they want. Some create packages, others star/clone/use them.
2) Making a taboo out of a normal itch, creating.
"hey you're a libdev? just stop, ok? stop"
"Are you a creative person? Do you know a way to solve a problem in an easier way than some famous package? it doesn't matter, don't you dare creating a new package."
I'm not gonna say the js world is perfect. The js world is frantic, savage, evolves aggressively.
You could say that it (accidentally) gives the middle finger to end users, but you could also say that it just sets the bar higher.
I liked writing jquery code in the past, but at the same time I didn't like adding features/fixing bugs on it. It was painful.
So I'm fine with a better framework coming along after a few years and stealing their userbase, as it happens almost universally in the programming world, the difference with js is that the cycle is faster.
Even jquery's creator embraced React.

I can’t believe I am getting closer to 2000 upvotes after only 2 months of coming back.
Thank you for the support!9 -
@dfox when will the feature of blocking users and blocking spamvotes be introduced. Im getting really annoyed by it every single time 30+ upvotes are given to my rants within a minute...
Its both ruining my overview of notifs and ruining the meaning of upvotes.21 -
I'd like to build a visual Web of what it looks like with every user connected to eachother by their upvotes to one another. @Localhost would probably end up at the center.
It would be interesting to see nodes that would end up being a complete sink of upvotes.2 -
Is there a thing like getting shadowbanned from downvoting on devrant or people just running bots that automatically upvote them if they hit negative upvotes?
Whenever I downvote anything thats at 0 upvotes (for ex. even spam that just didnt get noticed, where I cant report it on desktop), it instantly gets nulled, even on the most hidden and old rants.
I dont think theres always a registered user per every single rant out there at any given time that upvotes somebody. (often very deep down the comments)13 -
Just out of curiosity how many different countries are on this? Could you comment below? (And please for the love of god don't ++ this, save your upvotes for someone who deserves them, like that dude with the percentage happiness table)54
-
devRant suggestion: Comment Bump. Bump up the comments on a rant, the ones with most upvotes get bumped up to the top. Possible pitfalls, where comments have replies which could break the order and make no sense. I guess I just talked myself out of that one. Meh.4
-
Quick tip:
When an answer in SO has more upvotes than the question, has so many comments, and has so many explanation, so many code, and so many links, IT HAS A HIGH POSSIBILITY THAT IT IS A TROLL.
God damn i hate when programmers don't have any humor, and leave a comment saying
TROLL. PLEASE STOP THIS. FUCK
Good thing, devRant is full of people who HAS humor. Thank goodness.
tl;dr gone off topic -
thanks to everyone for all the upvotes so far through the years! it's been a wild, and mostly depressing, ride.
i put the parrot on my shoulder now because it's the closest thing i could find to a 🤡 mask (which I already requested!!!!)
also updated some clothes, trinkets, pets, table, and monitor 😎 probably gonna leave my avatar like this for a while now
cheers

I just realized I didn't make my first post a hello world post and I just threw away a bunch of potential upvotes. Hopefully it's not too late. Hello world!1

How the fuck do you get over 10k points on stackoverflow? Are these people actually developing and pursuing a job or are they just F5ing in the questions news section?
Recently I tried to get some upvotes on answers, but there was not one decent question in one hour which would have gotten me more then 1-2 upvotes.2 -
Am I the only one who's slightly triggered when I ask a question, get no upvote, and when someone answers, he gets 2 or 3 votes and people commenting like "yeah I'd do the same"?
I mean, it's like being the father who'se wife is being congratulated for being pregnant, she wouldn't be if I didn't do my job 😎3 -
Today I asked a question on RPG stackexchange, I made some typos, didnt format it nicely, added a wrong tag.
Within a minute I had 10 upvotes and an answer, people formatted my question and people improving the answer.
I was so surprised that people actually where nice. StackOverflow is one of the few stackexchanges that really sucks...
Why are devs such jerks?2 -
LinkedIn: Exploiting social psychology for fun and profit.
I was reading an excellent post by Kage about linkedin (you can find it and more here - https://devrant.com/users/Kage) a little while ago and it occurred to me the unique historic moment we are in. Never before have we been so connected in history. Never before have we had so great an opportunity to communicate with strangers (perhaps except for sketchy candy vans on college campuses, and tie dye wearing guys distributing slips of paper at concerts). And yet today, we are more atomized than ever before. In this unprecedented era of free information, and free communication, how can we make the most of our opportunities?
The great thing about linkedin is all the fawning morons who self select for it. They're on it. They're active, so you know they're either desperate attention hungry cock goblins,
self aggrandizing dicknosed cretins, desperate yeasty little strumpets, or a managerie of other forgetable fucking pawns,
willingly posting up their entire lives to be harvested and sold so someone can make 15 cents on a 2% higher ad conversion ratio for fucking cilas or beetus meds.
So what is a psychopathic autist asshole to do?
Ruthlessly exploit them by feeding them upvotes, hows-it-going-guys, and other little jolts of virtualized feel-good-chemical bullshit.
Remember the quickest way to network is for people to like you. And the quickest way to make people like you is either agree with them on everything, or be absolutely upfront with everything you disagree on.
Well, they'll love you, or hate you. But at least you'll be living rent free in their head. And that means they'll remember you when you call looking to network or get a referal.
Of course, in principle, this extends to any social media site. Why not facebook? Why not fucking *myspace*? Why not write a script in selenium to browse twitter all day, liking pictures of lattes and dogs posted by the lonely and social-approval-hungry devs working at places like google, twitter, faceborg, etc?
You could even extend this to non-job prospects. Want a quick fuck? Why, just script a swipe-right hack on tinder, or attach a big motherfucking robot arm to your phone, tapping and swiping for hours. Want to make a buck? Want not harvest data on ebay or amazon all god damn day and then run arbitration for 'wanted' classifieds on craiglist?
Why not automate all the things?
The world is at your fingertips, and you the power to automate it, while all the wall lickers and finger painters live oblivious to the opportunity they are surrounded with and blessed with daily.
Surely now that you know, it is your obligation, nay, your DUTY to show the way.
Now you are learned. Now you are prepared. Go forth and stroke the egos of disposable morons to bilk for future social favors while automating the world in ways never intended.3 -
1. I recorded something with my dad until 12 AM isarel daylight time

hello ranters, i want to play a game with you,
I posted this like a week ago.

Is devRant using Google Analytics for upvotes (on web)? My privacy protection apps have removed the ++ button because of that on web :(1

First workout done today. How did it go? Really well. In fact, it went so well that I couldn't open the repurposed fire door (thick, heavy metal). -

For those following my front angry saga, one of my clients terminated a contract with me, and i am feeling better, woke up to this news, and now i am free to work for better clients and not hate myself anymore. Still stressed but i think this feeling will be gone soon.
Thanks for the upvotes on the last stories, it helped me to vent out. -
UNOFFICIAL DEVRANT CLONE JAM - VOTING WITH CRICKETS - DAY 2
I see that nobody is leaving any comments on hackathon entries. It is troubling, because there is no telling if you approve the app behind the post or not - even if I were to collect all upvotes through myself.
Please give the feedback to our contestants in their respective rants! What it takes to make a "devRant clone" or there should be something else entirely? How do these clones look to you, which gets the most points?
Yesterday, @ostream has left the competition by removing account from devRant, but, hopefully, we'll see him again on the next hackathon. Now, it's only @retoor and @SidTheITGuy. They will clash for the right to get a cool animation of their devRant self. You vote can affect this.
Finnegan (by @retoor): https://devrant.com/rants/9946268
ragedev (by @SidTheITGuy): https://devrant.com/rants/9946238
Leave your comments in respective rants. Read the rules and vote for as many as you like!2 -

thoughts?
i know everyone here hates mac and therefore everything microsoft = good so i'm expecting thousands of upvotes

Another manifestation of the irony of life:
I have a few intricate questions on StackOverflow, with a couple of upvotes. I fewer answers, also with a couple of upvotes.
But once, I posted a question due to pure sloppiness: I had forgotten to set up exception options in Visual Studio. That's my most upvoted SO question.2 -
Right now just looking for rants not about Apple, Microsoft, and wanting upvotes...

GitHub PRs
You want to know whether it's merged already so you scroll and read every comment, tension is building...
it was open months ago... you keep reading in June
comments are March 25, (OK)
(reads another 20 comments) (OK)
May 1st (fuck I don't want to see any dates close to today)
keep scrolling - May 9th (fuck fuck, no, please be merged by now!!!)
Many of them asking for the merge with dozens of upvotes
next 16 days ago saying "Is this going to be merged now"?
And you keep reading and hoping and it gets to today and it's just hanging in there

Just curious, but do a lot of people here actually search content using tags. I made a post on CSS around 2 weeks back and it still gets upvotes pretty regularly.4

OpenSource is fun they said. I being a bored teen thought, ah, another chance to experiment. Discover something new. Now I am into piracy, movies, music, software. If I can get it for free I ain't paying for it. So I went on to GitHub to see what exciting new Repos I could contribute to. I hate already implemented plenty of algorithms in GO for GitHub.com/TheAlgorithms so I was looking something more practical, more beneficial to society. Then I saw it, the perfect repo, not too complex and not amateur. SpotDL/spotify-downloader for downloading songs from Spotify, a grey area coz it's technically piracy. Well not from Spotify, we fetch the info from the Spotify API and search for the songs on YouTubeMusic. They were just about to release v3, a complete rewrite of the codebase stressing code readability and stuff. I spend about a day studying the codebase, trying to findout just where I could make my contribution. I can see outright that there's a huge problem with implementation.
First of all the script spawns 4 processes for downloading songs though you might be downloading only one song. Which means for everytime you run the script you have to wait for 4 other processes to be spawned before any downloading can happen. Sure this is faster when you are downloading more than like 4 songs, but it's actually slower when downloading a single song. But I ignored that coz I assumed that most users download playlists and albums. Anyway we talked with the like lead developer and he was all like, make those PRs anytime you feel like. So I made a really minor first contribution.
I introduced download from Spotify URI functionality, modified like 10 lines of code. I was half expecting that the PR would be merged within hours at most 24 hours coz of how minor of a contribution it was, 5 days in it was pending. So I tagged the lead Dev and he was all appreciative of the PR, calling it real 'clean code' and stuff. 3 more days, the PR is still not merged. I have now stacked 4 more commits to the same PR, I tag the dev and he's like he's waiting to see if my 'feature' will get atleast 10 upvotes so that it can be merged, he links an issue. I go to the issue and my feature is not there, So 11 days after I made my PR I have to write a comment explaining the 'feature' introduced in my PR and then wait for 10 upvotes.
I was like f**k this, I'll just develop on my fork if you want the features on my fork, you will make your own PR! I am so done with OpenSource, development is slow. I have no idea how you guys do it. I can't handle development where I don't have write access.6 -
I had thought of creating a rant post declaring my current upvotes score and I'd challenge people to change my score, there would be an app that would continuously monitor my score and update the rant post with the latest number, but sadly, you can't keep on editing the post a certain time after it was posted. :(((((1

Yo what the actual hell is up with the lack of Azure AD B2C documentation, the error codes are pretty ass too! Had a similar problem many users faced & on stackoverflow everyone had different solutions. My solution wasn't the accepted one and it has 2 upvotes ....2 UPVOTES!!1

Infinite loop definition: when you post on devRant the stickers you received from devRant and you get upvotes, so you can request more swag from devRant that you then post again on devRant.
-
Is there a list of my upvotes?
I'm looking for a Linux distro someone made a post about but I can't find the name anymore I only know I upvoted. -
Is it me or are stickers just too easy to obtain? I feel like instead of raising the already seemingly unattainable stressball, they should've lowered that and increased the amount of upvotes required for stickers.3
