My boss came into my room today, sat down and said:
Take your family to the [BIG AMUSEMENT PARK], and please keep the reciepts and give them to me. Spend a couple of hundreds bucks and we will pay.
Thanks for being someone whom I can trust
That made me happy15 -
A little ago, a devRant user drew something awesome (fantasy stylish) of another devRanter.
I said in the comments that I'd kill for a drawing of my own character!
A day later I got a mention. He'd drawn my character!
Thanks a lot @ichijou! I find it awesome, it's in a frame on my wall now :D30 -
That moment when you come across other devRant lover while walking and then he requests you if he can take your picture! Thanks @dfox for this picture! Haha7
-
They asked for a web developer
Interviewer : can you fix this printer ?
Me: no
Interviewer : You're not for this job
Me: thanks God I'm not for that job1 -
To the guy that invented NULL...
Thanks for nothing.
*This is a corrected version of the dad joke originally containing zero.7 -
Me: Hi, how can i help you today?
User: Sorry, i can't upload a picture for my profile. It shows a popup saying that i already uploaded it.
Me: it's because you uploaded.
User: Awesome man, thanks.4 -
"Dad, just because the envelope has 'USA' printed on it doesn't mean that it's a job offer from Google" :/
Thanks @trogus & @dfox for the stickers.

Client: It works, it looks great! Thanks for everything!
Me: What? That isn't the new application, that's your old one. Your new one goes live tonight.3 -
Just an observation. Researched this a bit and found out that usually people only thank dfox when posting swag thanks posts.
Just wanted to demand some justice for mr trogus who is the designer of said swag and give due appreciation!
Lets @trogus some to deliver the appreciation.47 -
Probably the first one to get kickass devDucks! Thanks @dfox for hand delivering them. You always make sure that I have swags before everyone. Ducks are amazing and great great great quality. Duck currently I’ve on my desk gonna feel jealous now!5

When you type a shitload of instructions for someone in a support ticket reply and after a little you get a reply where they give you all the thanks and that they appreciate it etc.
That makes your day great as a support person 😍4 -
I can finally have the big white cat because we all know that whites are superi....
I mean thanks for 20k++, ill make sure to be twice as annoying as before.22 -
That moment when the resident IT guy/teacher at your school comes to you at lunch and you look sad.
Me: Hello.
Teacher: What happened?
Me: Batteries almsot dead :(
Teacher: Well, I've got good news for you. I was talking to the school director about you.
Me: Um ... shit
Teacher: We're looking to get you an intership at the company that does networking shit for us (Netcom, anybody?)
Me: FUCK YEAH ... thanks!
*Day brightened by angelic light*7 -
When you're so exited that you forget you have a name.
And thanks for the stickers senpai @dfox and @trogus.6 -
The fact that my wife thinks Devrant is lame is for me more confirmation that Devrant is the only social network for me worth spending time on. Thanks @dfox for making the world a better place for developers.2
-
It's quite awesome how some people can make you realize how much you actually know about some stuff and how skilled you are on a certain subject.
Shoutout to @404response for making me realize that i actually know quite some stuff about security/privacy and also a shoutout to @devisionbyzero for making me realize that I'm actually quite good with linux/linux servers :).
Thanks guys!13 -
!rant.
I said I'd do a thanks rant when I reached 50K. Yeah forgot about that one. Then said to myself that I'd do one when I received the devDuck. Well, that failed.
Tomorrow. I'm gathering up ideas now to make a very special/unique thankish rant.
Literally planning stuff for an hour now and writing stuffs down :)
This is gonna be fun!17 -
Dear, Random guy that I wrote you an answer on StackOverflow.
I spent 15 minutes GOOGLING the issue for you because you either were fucking lazy or don't know how to use Google.
I wrote an answer for you on your shitty question with -2 rep explaining how to solve the issue and you just replied thanks and didn't even bother to either upvote or accept my answer. Not only did I solve your question I did it to bloody help you and here you are with your attitude not accepting my answer, and replying with thanks that i feel like you didn't care for me writing your answer. You can bloody hell burn in hell. I hope there is a special place for you and people like you that magically go missing and never come back16 -
Hey everyone - apologies for the downtime earlier today. Our host is having a lot of issues and we're working to keep everything up through it.
On that note- there might be a little more down time tonight as they are trying to fix something and we might need a few server restarts. I will keep everyone updated and thanks for bearing with us!16 -
So I just started to use devRant on browser and noticed it shows the whole text from a rant, instead of putting read more just like the one on phone. Created a script for that thanks to @JoshBent12
-
Well, that was fast! 1 week for international shipping (Canada). Thanks dfox and trogus for the awesome swag (and for making an awesome app). Didn't even have the time to finish my 3d printed ball before I got the real one :P10
-
Just wanted to say a 'thank you' to all people who bear with my privacy stuffs! I know quite some people who installed messaging apps, signed up to privacy services and so on, solely because --> I <-- want to communicate in private and I realise (I've always realized that though) that that can be tough sometimes.
Also a thank you to those people for not requiring me to get data fed into the big companies :).
Thanks!24 -
Interviewer: Hello my name is Alyssa from Sheeple and my pronouns are she/her
Dev: Oh yeah I saw that in your email
Interviewer: Ok well I am just letting you know they are still the same
Dev: Thanks for that.
Interviewer: What are your pronouns?
Dev: div/span
Interviewer: Sorry?
Dev: he/him
Interviewer: Oh…ok. Let me know if that changes.
Dev: I promise you it won’t
Interviewer: Well you never know!

We’re recruiting new team members, and so our recruiting staff wanted some input on what to look for. We told them that we need more frontend devs, mainly for JS frameworks like React and Aurelia.
And now a few weeks later we find out that our newly recruited Java developer is starting this monday. Thanks3 -
Devrant black theme is here! Thanks to @Floydian and @Stuxnet for the idea and the tag! You can also grayscale all images, for that late night devrant viewing.

Thanks DevRant for being my DevDuck...
Was typing a rant when I started to realise the issue that caused me to write the rant :^)1 -
devRant is truly amazing, a social network where I don't have to give up on privacy by giving out my number to confirm that I am legit when I'd use something as a VPN to protect my identity (unlike twitter facebook and google)
Thanks for giving a fuck about privacy and not giving a fuck about my data11 -
Thanks to @dfox @trogus for asking users for a pittance to offset server costs rather than inundating the app with ads that make it unusable.
This has been a longtime suggestion of mine for other apps and social media sites. People will pay a premium (even if it’s only $2) for quality; just ask Apple.10 -
Hello fellow devRanters.
It's that time of year where we celebrate the holidays, and give thanks to each other.
This year has been a tough one. And for many people, life can be snide and harsh; the fact that such a community like this exists is a testament to that. But despite all this we continue to uplift each other through our hardships.
As a way of thanks for such a great community I'd like to give away a few Devie balls (:/ ) to some people.
I'll pick a few people at random, at around this time tomorrow, in the comment sections that would like to have a little devie ball.
In order to partake in this, I'd like you to tell me one thing about technology that you're most thankful for.48 -

I wanted to screenshot some of the birthday wishes that were printed for me on the discord server early this morning but they're spread too much, thanks anyway! That was very cute of you all. Only people from devRant actually bothered to wish me a Happy Birthday this early (maybe I influenced it a little bit ... 😂) But it's true
Everyone remember that ThatDude's Birthday is on January 28th 😉16 -
fuckpress.Pi
Yep, thata right. Fuck Wordpress Raspberry Pi. Thanks to my inability to interact with proton mail filtering I just made a script that checks for a new email and if it contains words "wordpress", "help", " hack", "build" and it is not from whitelisted contact, the email is moved to the Fuckpress folder and automatic reply is sent back that I AM NOT FUCKING DOING YOUR GAYPRESS FUCKING SHIT FOR YOUR 5$ CUNT.
rant over4 -
I need to yell something out loud here because if I don't yell it here I'm going to yell it at a coworker, which would be unprofessional and kinda rude of me.
STOP APOLOGIZING FOR BEING A FUCKING CRETIN AND ALSO STOP BEING A FUCKING CRETIN.
Phew, thanks. That feels better.10 -
Client: (via email) Wondering if this link is available and active.
I click the link. It takes me to the page, which is working and functional.
Me: Yes, this link is both available and active.
Client: Great, thanks for checking that.
Me internally: Did you seriously just SEND ME AN EMAIL to ask me to click a link for you?5 -
devRant has rose astronomically to become my favorite bathroom browsing material. Thanks for making poops that much better, everyone!6
-
"That's a frontend problem."
Really? And you call yourself the engineering lead? Oh right, "frontend is not engineering", was that it? Ok, thanks a lot for the help, you can continue licking your balls now. I don't know why I still bother trying to ask you for advice.5 -
Thanks @dfox and Tim for the awesome stickers which miraculously made it all the way to Sydney! Love seeing that you guys are so in touch with your audience 😊12

Dear Phone Manufacturers,
I dont like that you always make phones slimmer and slimmer, batteries suffer and the cooling of the SoC isnt really improving either...
Also your phones are getting more breakable than ever!
JUST MAKE PHONES THICKER FOR GODS SAKE! THEN WE CAN HAVE BATTERIES WHICH LAST FOR DAYS AND PHONES THAT ARE INDESTRUCTABLE! thanks. and now Fuck off16 -
Seriously ? Thanks for nothing ? Is this an appropriate subject, given that you are sending Thanksgiving greetings to your users ? Honestly I feel attacked. I'll probably unsubscribe and block them.14
-
A special thanks to @dfox for the awesome swag that showed up today.
My daughter claimed the stress bar for her own.7 -
So guys and gurls...
I'm a member of devRant for about 1.5 weeks now. I already have over 130 likes on my rants in total about things I was never able to post without being labeled a nerd. I literally love you guys! Thanks to @dfox and @trogus for making it possible for us to discuss things that matter for us!6 -
Thanks devrant for making me feel part of a really nice community! I mean... Before devrant I was only able to hear "oh, it is not that bad" or "take it easy" as a response... Now I'm reading really nice answers from people that really loves the IT, and people that always works on the worst side of the companies, doing all the hardwork. I don't feel alone anymore!4
-
I came back here, after not logging in for about a year just to say that patents are fucking stupid. Thanks, see you in another year!5

Fucking websites that dont host the latest version of their own software
Thanks for making me download a 5gb installer just to make me download another 2gb in updates assholes -
Signed up for a coding contest that starts at 9am. I’m bad at timed code challenges, but I’ll never get better if I don’t push myself.
Woke up in a panic, thinking I’d overslept... 1.5 hours after falling asleep.
This is definitely not going to help matters. Thanks, brain.10 -
Yesterday evening I'd been to Lenovo service center to get a battery for my personal laptop.
Sales guy: Sir, I can see that your laptop had Windows 8 when you purchased it. If you want I can give you a one key recovery disc for that.
Me: Thanks a lot sir, but I run Ubuntu on my laptop. And if you are insisting, I can take that recovery media and install it on my uncle's laptop.
Sales guy: I'll get back to you on this.
*End of conversation* 😂5 -
In memory of the giant of engineering that was Larry Tesler, today I will be coding solely by copying and pasting. Thanks for making my life so easy, Larry. RIP.4

Tonight I left the phone's GPS on, and this morning Google Maps adviced me to "save your new home address for faster navigation". Yeah, thanks for noticing that I'm going trough a breakup and that I'm sleeping at a friend's home2

Thanks Windows 10 for rebooting because I left my desk for 20 minutes. It's not that there were programs still running or anything like that.

My neighbours have so many fucking IoT devices that they basically fuck over the entire 2.4GHz spectrum over here just by themselves...
Thanks for that you cuntbags.32 -
I didn't expected that devrant could be this good, facebook is just full of spams nowadays and hard to find dedicated people. Thanks @condor for suggesting devrant16

Wanted to ++ rant about that clicking devrant logo refreshes page. Now thanks to algo I can not find it... Sorry mate, no ++ for you4

Im going to boast for a second. I wrote a lockless multi producer c++ thread pool that scales linearly, doesn't eat cpu on no work, and has a proper packaged_task + futures interface. It's fucking awesome, and that is all. Thanks for reading 😎3 -
Boy do I love when Snapchat sends me a snap telling me happy father's day.
I don't even know who my father is but thanks for the reminder assholes.
I wonder what dipshit thought that sending everyone on Snapchat messages during all sorts of holidays that not everyone celebrates was a good idea.9 -
Fuck you EU,
thanks for making every electronics project I do much more expensive in the future by taxing me for something that I can't buy anywhere inside the eu for a reasonable price. Congrats. You made it unaffordable for me to do the one thing I had fun doing. I hate you.28 -
Are you fucking kidding me, Microsoft?!
You are literally doing the opposite thing of "protecting me".
I might as well just download all the viruses myself and watch my CPU rise up like that. Thanks, Microsoft for nothing, but bad things.12 -
today i spent hours doing a 30 seconds task that was neglected for months by a colleague. thanks pal

Sorry for breaking the protocol, but I'm not here to rant. I want to thanks all the ranters (is that a thing now?) for recommending Mr. Robot (the TV series). Just watched the first episode and I can see myself watching it all day. Be back tomorrow.6

Hey guys! So I'm new new here and it would be great to get a few upvotes so that I can create my avatar as soon as possible. I love the community and I'm planning to stay active for time to come.
Thanks :)12 -
Installed devRant about 3 weeks ago and love reading the rants, story's and comments. Just wanted to say thanks guys for making my uni experience that little bit greater. Decided today to create an account and support devRant by subscribing. Anyways hello devRanters!5

Cortana responds
"Sorry I can't do that yet"
Wow, I just love voice assistants. Thanks Microsoft!4 -
Microsoft seriously hates security, first they do enforce an numer, upper and lowercase combined with a special character.
But then they allow no passwords longer than 16 characters....
After that they complain that "FuckMicrosoft!1" is a password they've seen to often, gee thanks for the brute force tips.
To add insult to injury the first displayed "tip" take a look at the attached image.rant password security security 101 security fail annoyance passwords passwords stupid practices microsoft13 -
This poor fella is asking a simple question we've all asked it before.. It makes me angry to see that some beginners get discouraged thanks to the toxic community at stackoverflow, many of the idiots on stackoverflow forget that they were once beginners and didn't know a thing.. Even if the question sounds stupid for you, why can't you just help them, instead of being an ignorant smartass.. 😠13

Thanks Microsoft, thankyou for not grouping notifications on windows 10 when multiple come through from the same app at the same time...
Opened the mail app after having it disabled for a while and it slowly queued up over 120 notifications that came through one by fucking one...
Why can't you just detect there are tonnes of notifications and just send 1 saying there are notifications... ffs6 -
When you switch back to Javascript after a while of using SQL and dont see the error in this line..
Thanks for syntax highlighting that, firefox! I spent almost 10mins checking the parentheses and trying different combos...1 -
Handed in my vacation for this year. Didn't hear back for a long time, no info at all. Got the new employee assignment spreadsheet for our biggest client, which went out to them. In it, my vacation is pushed behind by 3 weeks.

Great.. really fucking awesome.
There’s nothing else available in my town and I have time till the end of the month.
Thanks for that asshole.
Never, ever sharing a house / apartment again.

Thank you, senior developer!
Thanks for offering to help me when I said haven’t slept at all tonight.
Thanks for having a pair programming session with me when I said I would have trouble finishing todays tasks that the customer was expecting.
Thanks for being understanding and explaining, instead of just staying quiet and do everything yourself, when I couldn’t understand even simple solutions with my sluggish brain.
Thanks for making sure I understood what tasks needed to be done and how to do them before you resumed to your own.
Thanks for caring, and telling me I did good work even though I wasn’t my sharpest today!4 -
Looks great. That's all now set for my WhatsApp profile pic no more hassle on that. Thanks devRant for the awesome avarter.

Hey guys, I just wanted to know that are there any websites which can pay for coding or stuff similar to that? I am good in programming in several languages but I also need to pay college fees and internet bills.

Oh, a big "Learn More" button on the hero of your webpage. Let me click that. Oh, it slightly scrolls down to the bottom. I didn't expect that. Thanks for saving me some mousewheel flings. I appreciate it. Really.

Remember how CPU speeds stopped mattering after they reached 2GHz? (except for gaming and media editing of course).
I believe Internet speeds have also met that zero marginal utility point at 15Mbps.
I felt no difference when mine went up gradually from 15Mbps to 75Mbps now. (Thanks ACT, India)14 -
Recruiter: I might have the perfect role for you that will match your salary expectations, they want to send you a technical challenge using Java.

So today I was offered a job at the company as a junior frontend developer. Digging a little deeper I found out that they don't have any other frontend devs in house.
So the job offer translated to:
- senior skillset
- senior workload
- junior wage
Best part is that I was freelancing for them in past and was helping to establish some of the workflow a year ago for more money they offered now.
Thanks, no thanks, I guess?4 -

That feel when an intern is tasked with implementing a web frontend for a project you're working on.
That feel when you open up one of the views and it's filled with JQuery spaghetti and your eyes glaze over.
That feel when you actually step through the code, and it actually makes sense and is remarkably light and clever for what it does.
That feel when you learned a bit more JQuery (a library that you never had any experience with before) and it made doing some more things an absolute breeze.
Thanks intern! -

Attribute "label" in element "label" in the namespace "label" in a file called "labels.xml"...
Cool, thanks for that.2 -
It’s my “duck” in a box!

Thanks for keeping new and exciting things compiling in the community, I think I speak for everyone when I say that we’re lucky and proud to be apart of it!rant ducky! proud to be part of such an amazing community devduck sign my duck! it’s my duck in a box!5 -
Boss : "Hey everyone is so busy/too good to work on that project but it's really complicated af and you'll be alone. Good luck ! Oh and we are ok to hire you next year after your apprenticeship, work well and without pressure !"
Me : O_o "Ok I'll do my best, shoudn't be that complicated"
Me (1 month after) : demotivated, sick of that mission, tired, algorithm not working, I wanna die I'm a parasite for that company. Thanks giving me that work to do.1 -
I'm the only dev in a project. I'm a frontender. It was supposed to be a front end project. Now I know more about ruby and postgres than I wanted. Thanks for learning opportunities, I guess. Good that the deadline is still pretty far away.2

I am about to try TDD for embedded C. Does anyone around here tried that? What are your experiences with it? Thanks!10

Thanks, client, for not telling me you were going to have a big sales event that needed my intervention. Nice Saturday I'm having.

Thanks GitLab.
After I get notifications about the final replies to my 6 month quest of updating someones GitLab README, I didn't expect MY fork to have been modified ( and thanks to that, made ugly / they removed all spacing, vertical & horizontal )
Where the fuck even was the option that GitHub offers where it prevents people from just doing whatever to your shit in a PR?
Why the fuck isn't this a permanent setting for either ( lab & hub ) so I don't have to manually turn it off every single time.
I didn't even think about that option up until now, since the maintainers didn't touch anything and everything seemed fine, but now that it was about to be merged, they suddendly got the bright idea of squashing everything into one commit and that on my fork itself, .. really helpful.5 -
I once wanted to participate in a free activity that requires signing up for a crappy website.
Unfortunately all spots for the activity I wanted were filled, so I gave it a few minutes and it turned out that the registration is done by sending an HTTP request to a domain with all of the details. So I changed the activity details and selected the hours I wanted and boom - "Thanks for signing up with our site, did you like it ?" Yes.😈 -
I always love rant when I LOST myself in coding and and GAIN by awaiting 20+1 like for that rant.
Thanks devRant You balance my business. -
*Opens IDE*
My brain: oh right! This is that thing that you do to try and convince yourself that coding something will make you feel good about yourself, one day buddy, one day...
Also me: welll... Thanks for the confidence brain *said as I pound down the sixth beer*1 -
So I got new internet two days ago but I never had time to run a speed test. Ran one this morning and found that I'm getting 113/15mbs when I'm paying for 60/5. Thanks spectrum for using the "median speed is" language instead of "up to" language.3

Newb rant: So you're telling me that I could've been accessing the freaking terminal right inside of Android Studio!?!? Thanks Udacity for once again stringing me on for freaking ever alt tabbing back and forth from Android Studio to the Terminal!!4

Hello,
I am Lazy As Fuck, and I'm looking for people to work for a company that pays me for doing nothing.
Do you know anyone that is an Angular developer? If you do, please tell them to send me their resume and phone number.
Thanks.2 -
It has arrived! :D
To think it was all thanks to my "noteporn" rant and all that I was eligible for those stickers. Weird flex but ok :3
In any case, thanks again to the devRant team for providing such a good network to all kinds of developers or aspiring developers alike :)4 -
I've started at school, but thinking about it since I were a child (10/11 YO) thanks to Crash Bandicoot!!
Damn, I've loved that game! And since then, I've dreamed about becoming a"videogame programmer", then I've found out that developing it's funny too, so for the moment I develop every time I can, one day I'll do my course to become a gameDev :D3 -
Thanks, AfterShip.com, for working flawlessly while the system I was building was in dev/test mode and for the first few days in live mode, then completely crapping the bed the first day I needed you to work with real tracking data with the live system. You were the ONE thing that was working consistently well, and you had to go and ruin it.4

Saw this on Science Museum in London.

Our support department got this the other day. We host their email and only provide support for that lol
p.s. thanks @nblackburn for catching me forgetting to attach my image 😅2 -
@dfox - I really like the swag store and all, but do you think you could come out with some unique/not-available-on-the-swag-store items for the big milestones?
It just adds to the allure imo!
Thanks for all that you both do!2 -
TITANOSAURUS CRAP!!!
Whose idea was to send an e-mail at 11pm about a dev job convention for this weekend!!! And on top of that there will be testing to weed out the candidates!
SIMPLY GREAT! I have to be off town for unavoidable family matters for three days without Internet connection...
Thanks a lot automated mail system for letting me know 4 days in advance that I will fail!!!
It's not that things were awful enough, now I have one more reason to be stressed, get more rashes and weep internally! -

Dear developer guy who wrote this documentation node!
You're a developer yourself. Don't you know that inverse psychology is something you should avoid, because it will not work?
Thanks!

Okay for real, why shouldn't one parse Build.FINGERPRINT on Android? I was looking for a way to determine if the device is an emulator or not, and came across a solution using this, and read the documentation.3 -
Just finished a app for mapping printers based purely on convention in a Citrix environment, no manual config needed. Chief of operations said "it's fixing stuff like this that should trigger a bonus, too bad we're the government". (Yay, thanks for rubbing it in).
Then I responded "I'll get my reward in heaven as usual, then". CIO says: "but you're not going there...."
Guess I just need a fire extinguisher then. Thanks boss.1 -
rant¹⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰
WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SYMFONY DOCUMENTATION. When i'm coding and i'm searching for some info on a function, I DON'T FUCKING WANT A TUTORIAL. I DON'T FUCKING WANT EXAMPLES. I WANT A FUCKING DESCRIPTION OF THAT FUNCTION. WHAT PARAMETERS ARE NEEDED. WHAT CAN I GET IN RETURN. IS IT SO FUCKING HARD TO UNDERSTAND ?
Seriously though, i can't believe actual devs thought this was a good idea. at this point i've been searching for two goddamns hours for a solution to something that should be TRIVIAL, and i'm NOWHERE near a solution. Thanks for my time, Symfony.1 -
OMG... I want to thank my mother for changing my diapers for many years, my brother for all the games he no longer plays, my wife for actually making money, my plant for the awesome smell, God for maybe doing something (I guess), thanks @dfox, @trogus, and each one of you guys that deemed my rants worthy of your ++.1

Is it weird that, despite the professional setting, when a client actually thanks us/me for swift/efficiently done job that I feel a little happier with myself?1

!rant, just asking the wise devRant community for advice:
What is a good laptop that works well with linux? Thanks in advance :)11 -
When you spend hours and hours on a group project at Uni only to learn that it's pass/fail and that the entire course grade is decided by a 20min interview with the teacher... And oh did I mention that the interview does not discuss anything about the code?
First rant btw, thanks for a awesome community!3 -
I started studying programming last year, currently learning c# and c++ at college (even though I'm a 29 years old electrical engineer.. long story...) any advice on how to start looking for internships and jobs? I feel very lost on how to proceed to gain experience and feel that many of my colleagues have the same issue. Thanks4

Just when I thought Microsoft is going in the right direction with the launch of dark Surface products and dark mode for Windows, they took all my hopes away with their shitty Windows Update thing. Completed download and rebooted to find out that the update has vanished. Great, thanks for wasting my data, Windows. :3

Been a ReactJS user for a year, today thanks to: @
chrisrhymes, @Devnergy, & @Hammster I decided to go into Vue, so much I like what I'm seeing.
For those that used both, what difference have you found in terms of performance and output size?
Oh, and using their nice resource: https://laracasts.com/series/...5 -
Question: where on the web can you post questions that do solicit debate (the anti SO)?
I want an opinion on something from outside my own development sphere that likely does not have a right answer.
I've tried Quora but they want permissions to manage my contacts (which is just too scary for me).
Thanks in advance.23 -
It's not every day that the solution to a long-standing mild frustration with a server is to blacklist the kernel module for video drivers.
5 years of never having an accessible console on that box was not the "headless" I had in mind all this time. I was finally able to solve the black screen by forcefully ignoring Intel's broken video drivers. Thanks Intel.2 -
I really try to not write passive aggressive replies but people who don't seem to read before typing are making things harder than they have to be.
"Wow, thanks you so very much for the suggestion. I mentioned that I already tested this scenario and that it seems to be unrelated to this case, but thanks for bringing it up again! Now I really question my ability to get my point across"1 -
Who says that no one is still waiting for traditional mails? ;) Thanks from Italy @dfox ! I don't know how many devs from my country are here but you are more than welcome to come! :D6

Ummm, I will assume that you were not able to navigate to the page you have just opened in background. Ok Safari, thanks for the hardwork.4

So the EU plans to make an "upload-filter"-law.
Actually this means that every service, every provider literally everyone has to check everything which is going to be uploaded on a webpage if there is an copyright violation and so on.
Thanks to my european government for slowing down the digital evolution in a absolutely shit way.2 -
So I tried IntelliJ. Interesting UI...but it’s bullshit that I have to pay for a subscription to integrate with Application servers. No thanks, I will stick with Eclipse. It’s free and in my opinion easier to use. IntelliJ is pretty, that’s for sure...but the value sucks.5
-
Got my stickers, thanks a lot @dfox and everyone that made it possible
hoping for the stressball (need 1 more like on my other rant)2 -
Here's some nice UI logic in Android Play Console.
There's more than 50 apps in this account, so I click on Filter to find the app I was working on. Options are "Unpublished apps" and "Draft apps". The app I want is in "Draft" so I click "Draft". Nothing changes, so I figure it's broken. Then I try to find my app and it's missing.
Why?
Because some shithole thinks that a filter dropdown should hide what I'm looking for. Thanks for that! -
Snapchat?
Is it just me, or, is this a super simple app (that makes millions, aarg)
Do you really need to steal the code?
Is it the scale (number of users) that would potentially make it complicated?
My apps may get thousands of visitors / day, but that's about it... not millions. Php/mysql is just fine for that. So I have no experience with this and I'm curious. Thanks.4 -
Email: "Thanks for applying to this position, after you complete this technical test, please let us know via email."
Me: Dude! I didn't even apply for that position, stop spamming 😒3 -
Thanks Google calendar for sometimes giving me notifications and sometimes not. Missed am appointment due that.
Anyone here with the same problem? It's really inconsistent.
Ooh PS I did setup the notifications.1 -
My favourite bug reports are the ones for where something is missing. No details on pages, or steps to recreate, but they do include a screenshot.
Essentially, they go "Here's a picture of something that isn't there."
Great, thanks, I'll get right on that. -

Hello all, got my cs bachelor degree recently. I thought about getting a new notebook. Do you have any recommendations? I have my eyes on the xps13 at the moment. Also I want Linux for the notebook so, any recommendations here too? Currently using fedora and thinking about openSUSE Tumbleweed, any thoughts on that? Thanks for your help in advance.1 -
Thanks I hate it, I hate the fact that typescript will still transpile this. Not an exact copy of the code I'm working with, but close enough. Also this code targets es3, but we generate tsconfigs that say es5 (which don't actually get used) which leads me to believe that we generate them soley for the benefit of ides, and because if they said es3 the ide would show even more errors7
-
Ummm. Thanks for that, google/youtube!
(Box without content + unclosable. Had to clear all cookies etc)2 -
I haven't touched my OpenVPN server configuration in almost a year. Everything seemed to "just work" the way I wanted it.
I have now just found out that all ipv6 DNS queries were actually going to the wrong ip.
Why am I such a magnet for stupid shit like this?
Every time I try to do something beautiful, elaborate, complex, I always get some small shitty detail wrong.
It's like "close, but no cigar".
Every.
Single.
Time.
Sigh
Bonus fun fact: I only found out thanks to Windows' DNS leak feature. Thanks, Windows!5 -
Whaaaaat! You mean to tell me that setting grid-column-gap and grid-row-gap to 1em will make them both 1em? I really did not realize this thanks for clarifying! Is this really a bridge???

Hey guys :D So, finally I have to build a website for a service. That means setting up a server and all that stuff...
What servers do you recommend? Also service for DNS?

Hi everyone,
I have a question, what should learn if I want to make products for example like headphones or laptops and stuff like that. Till now ive only been programming and making pc games. And where could I learn it? Thanks!9 -
Yesterday I finished off a clientbuild then I checked if it's posting and he picked it up.
Today he called my boss and said that it's saying no CPU fan.
I connected the aio on the aio fan header not on the one for the cpu.
Thanks Asus for that selfdescriptive
Labeling now I can sieve to the client and fix this on a Saturday.3 -

So I accidentally used an email as a username to create an account through Jira for mongodb to report a bug.. That apparently breaks the entire Jira login system. I just spent 6 hours searching for the reason my code ONLY works when stepping through the breakpoints. Turns out I just had to add a single line of code to my procedure (chartObject.Activate) to make it work. I'd be lost without those 3 year old posts on some shady Excel VBA forums.
Thanks for documenting that, Microsoft! -

That I'm actually as good as my coworker tell me.
I have much to learn, no question there.
But for a long Time i didn't believe that I should be a programmer and do profesionally what makes me fun.
A lot of thanks to that goes to my two coworkers, which i'll soon leave.

hi guys I've got a question for you
what if your manager asks for a programmer of a certain programming language (that you know but is not a master of it) for a certain project and there are only few people you know who would volunteer and they might hire other people if they don't find people inside, would you volunteer yourself given that you don't have any project with you right now or no?
thanks for those who will answer! :)
PS background abt me: univ. student, no experience in the industry yet4 -
When working with a customer and he says that the implementation can wait for a bit. But then decides that there needs to be a temporary implementation in 2 days. And it can later be implemented the way it should be.. Thanks for letting me know on time! #timeVeryMuchWasted

Coworker asked to complete a part of a client's implementation that I trained them on so that I can be freed up for other projects. Month later asks me to take it back over as the client wants it done next week and they are going on vacation. Completed none of the work and didn't follow up/resolve an issue that I explained when they took it over. Thanks for that.1

Related to previous rant where I was asked to deliver the new UI for an Angular project running in production.
So the good NEWS is that I have successfully missed the deadline. Thanks to my project manager who keeps asking me to implement new features on other projects.1 -

I acknowledge that I didn't know how to program until I was in 5th semester at my second try on data structures.
God! The best teacher I have ever had, and if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have learned what I know!
From that point onwards, it was just reading books they way that kept me up.
I know you're not here, but thanks Ms. Juanita 😁 -

How do you measure your years of experience? I've never had a dev/designer job. Let's say I've been using Photoshop or whatever since 2008. How would that go? Thanks for your help.3

Ah yes. Make changes on that deprecated repo. Thanks. Now I have to merge them and remove all the branches code too in that repo. I guess an empty master and a broken deployment script isn't a big enough flag for you.1

Is there any way I can preview an app before completion. For example I have just written a code for border and I want to preview it, is there any way I can do that? I am using Java and Android ide

Any recommendations for moving a blog?
My wife and I just cancelled our account with siteground hosting a WordPress blog. Looking for a cheaper alternative. Willing to get my hands dirty as a web dev, but would like a nice CMS experience for my wife. Also want to keep our existing content. If we can keep our custom domain somehow that would be a win.
Thanks!7 -
Hi folks,
I wanna start a project on Django and Python so that I can learn more developing things. Can anyone suggest an awesome project for me so that I can learn while doing things ?
Thanks !6 -
Successfully completed 6 months on devrant .🔥 I initially joined just for stickers (not received yet : p) but then I realized that this platform have great community (I am getting more than stickers). Feeling blessed for having such a great developer community. Thanks : )4

So lately I've been thinking about building a server and running at home. I'm hoping that in the long run it would end up being cheaper than having a bunch of VPSes. Do any of you have experience with running your own machines? Do you think that consumer grade hardware will be sufficient for running at least a year?
Thanks for any input... :)8 -
Started as internship for studies. Got the internship without pay thanks to friend(i was struggling to find any positions and its mandatory for studies) and after a month put on an actual paying contract. That has been extended i believe twice now.
Thanks to @TheCapeGreek -

The worst part about trying to come up with an antialiasing technique is running the demo application and thinking "hey that doesn't look too bad" and then reaslizing that the image doesn't have any antialiasing on it whatsoever

I should run a daily cron job for my Mac rants. Today it was just this: I connected to some other iMac over network discovery, but from within in the GUI it is impossible for me to get the IP or any information of that machine. Microsoft is revolutionary on software development: instead of introducing bugs and pretend they are features, they develop features that are as fucking annoying as a bug.
For example, now you can't turn off Windows Defender. Thanks for making my life easier. Thank you so fucking much.3 -
In recent time, I'm thinking about to start freelancing (or at least start preparing for it).
Problem is that I'm completely new to it. In following weeks, which steps should I take to successfully introduce myself to that market? Which mistakes to avoid? Which sites do you recommend?
Thanks in advance for contribution. :) -
Looking for help for my daughter who is an American exchange student in Germany struggling to learn to code Java in a classroom that only speaks German. She is using Java-Editor for her assignments but doesn’t know how to translate English-based tutorials into German. Like, what’s the German word for “properties” for finding the properties tab in the UI? That sort of thing. Is there an English to German glossary, or better yet a way to switch the UI to English?
I don’t speak German but I do code, so trying to help her is difficult.
Thanks for any help.6 -
Not a rant. Request suggestions.
I am developing a Sublime Text plugin for real-time code monitoring ( screencasting) using Websockets. I would like to know if it makes any sense to develop such a plugin. Also, please suggest some use cases so that I can increase the features of the plugin. Point out if it already exists. Thanks :) -
Thanks google for making it so fucking damn difficult to authenticate G Apps users and check their groups/org unit. Makes my fucking work so much harder! To make matters worse you decided that that if I want to get the information in a seprate call I have to use a seprate admin account to do it because apparently letting the user see it is to fucking hard.

I want to buy a keyboard for my macbook pro. I'm choosing between razer chroma ornata and apple Bluetooth black full keyboard.

I woke up to find my internet connection failed overnight. Thanks for nothing BT.
Before the brain engaged and whilst waiting for the router to restart, I thought to myself let's check devRant... DOH!
However, doing that allowed me to discover that the devRant's app, at least on iOS, doesn't display an error in this case. I've attached what it currently looks like to me but think we can come up with a better solution together.9 -

I'll start charging hourly for jobs and I'd like some suggestions on how to track my time properly, apps and such that could help me to that. Integration with Sublime would be nice, or something that tracks it automatically.. dunno. I'm afraid i will forget to track if I have to do it manually.
Thanks :)8 -
I just got a new laptop and wanted to dual boot Linux on it.
Everything seemed fine until I realized the laptop had UEFI. I always used easyBCD but this won't work sadly. MS blocked some features.
Any alternatives?
What boot loader do you guys use for dual booting Linux that works with UEFI?
Thanks in advance!14 -
So I've been looking for a job in tech but outside the development and coding, but still in the tech niche, something like tech sales if its even a thing, however I've yet to find something like this that isn't either an old post or expired already, or asking for way too much experience, so any recommendations will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,4 -
For the past couple of months I am trying to get a job in devops. I have 5y exp.
Suggest me something that actually works unlike junkshit recommendations on the internet.
How can I get a remote job here in India. Even I had remote jobs mostly. I feel I am missing on something this time.

Hello, I'm new to programming and I need to write a website that allow some people to bet for sports match scores (without any money, just for fun). I want it to have leaderboard, personal statistics, easy way to add and remove teams from database (last one for administrator). My question is what programming language/maybe framework will be the best for that? I'm interested only in this bet system because rest is almost done. Thanks for help4

Hey guys,
do u know a simple and well designed program, that's suitable for a presentation about design? I am explaining UX, UI, IA and IxD and I need a simple example to show my class the components of a program that represent these.
Thanks a lot :)6 -
I am about to pay for a wireless keyboard and mouse, those ones that come with dongles. I was wondering if they work in BIOS or the OS has to boot before they become functional? thanks4

There was a time where Nvidia drivers took few minutes to install. Looks like I missed that time, eh?
Have been waiting here for at least 30 minutes and it is still "Preparing to install". Thanks Nvidia. -

Thinking of migrating from github to gitlab, thoughts?
(or just set up my own hosting but not really inspired)
love to hear some suggestions and arguments for services you use!
(mind you I am not that informed of the politics of the different platforms)

Co-worker: I started having this issue like two weeks ago.
Me: Two weeks ago? Why are you only telling me now?
Co-worker: I dunno. I just stopped using <program> and worked around it.
Me: Thanks for the notice, man. That helped me tremendously /s -_-
FUCKING PUT IN A TICKRT OR TELL ME THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE. -

The moment i heard, that there is a magic artifact in starfield, i audibly sighed and thought, yeah no thanks. It apparently gives the character magic abilities..
Now i feel basically the same, like when they introduced dragons in the elder scrolls universe with skyrim. Incidently i never really played Skyrim.
Otherwise that game looks kinda cool. But 70€ (100€ for deluxe) is too much for 30h mainstory imo.3 -
Teaching junior engineers that main.c is not mandatory for a C program is really touch thanks to their academic knowledge.3

Not dev related, assuming that here is a lot of people interested in history , philosophy, books I would like to ask for recommendations for:
YouTube channels or site related to history, books reviews/recommendations (dev and non-dev related), philosophy.
Thanks. :)6 -
Apparently there's a limit to how many API endpoints you can deploy in a second using CDK. Thanks for not having an error message that says that and wasting two weeks.1

that moment when your email app knows better what to answer than you. thanks @dfox for the stickers btw :D3

Okay, so last to last week I came across Hacktoberfest's advert somewhere on the web. I was so excited to know about the cool stickers and tshirts that companies let out on doing some simple work that I posted PRs in many companies repos and here I am completing the task for devRant. Please help me get some :D
Thanks a lot!! -
Hey guys, I'm looking for some feedback for a new website I launched socialfeedapi.com. It provides quick and easy API access to any Instagram media feed (for any public username or hashtag). Is this something that you guys think will be useful in the dev world? Is it just me, or has anyone here tried to gain access to an Instagram feed and was frustrated in doing so? Thanks in advance!7

I mean, seriously, who needs sleep anyway? Oh, you missed a semi-colon at the end of that line? Boom! Code's broken, and I'm on a wild goose chase.
Thanks for the extra hours of debugging, Captain Forgetful!6 -
I had some fun times in college.
Me: This book is too outdated, we need updated information for the video capture card presentation. I'd do it but this time I'm busy.
Teammate: I'll do it.
Me: oh wow really? Thanks!
Next week...
Teammate: here, take a look. I updated the information
Me: Yeah, I can see that all of those 10+ year old models have some fresh google search information in them. Thanks. -
What are the ways for a technical student to get a free laptop by internship, i mean which company usually do that?
I need one.
Now seeing the price of laptops, I mean oh my god!

Hello everyone,
I wanted to ask for advice about hosting providers. Specifically looking for vps servers.
I'm currently using OVH, but I got some recommendations that would give me a lot more for the price.
The recommendations I got were Contabo, Hetzner and Netcup
Maybe some of you have experience with those Providers and can recommend one, or maybe even some not on that list.
Thanks for taking your time to read6 -
So today I found an HackerSpace in my fucking zone, never thought that this would happen.
Thanks programmers all-over the world for this, I fucking love programmers

A question.
I understand ads on browsers that use cookies, but I don't understand how I get the same ad on a mobile app say instagram, for a search I did on laptop browser?

Anyone out there care to share a resource that they like for web app layout? Things I'm finding are more UX or just app clone versions.
I guess I'm looking for a book on standard layouts used.

Account service needs migrating, to AWS cause thats where everything is going.
Manager has got it in her head that a document store would be ideal for this.
My knee jerk reaction was a big No, i was told we'd discuss this at a later time.
My main argument here is that data is inheritly relational, and now i'm looking for more.
Any ideas why a documentstore is not a good fit for accounts?
Thanks!1 -
Hi everyone
I have a pretty old sansui tv in my room that I lost the remote for ages ago. I would like to remotely control the TV without having to buy the actual remote for the specific model (which is ~$28). Any ideas on how I can find the remote codes for the tv so I can program my own remote? Let me know if u guys have any ideas, thanks!!3 -

I'm in the process of building a reccomender engine for the lols. After doing it for awhile I've realized that once I get it going then it will be very hard to optimize because I can't think of test cases or deterministic correct answers. Has anyone built one here who has tips on testing one? Thanks :) -
First time would be when I had two teachers working of a bug that resultet in the CSS not loading / updating properly. It took me around 1 hour as well to realize that the text file was encoded with some obscure windows encoding, that doesn't load chrome (and maybe other browsers) can't load properly.
Thanks notepad++, will never use you again for web development.
Second time would be when I presented an app I made too the same teachers in order to boost my mark. Bugs that never appeared before every where and the basic functionality of the app was questionable. I hadn't worked on that app for half a year and had to fix as much as possible in a short amount of time, which might have made it worse.
Don't ask why but thanks to my knowledge about the france language I got a better mark, even though it was spanish1 -
Quick question. I'm currently working on a project that requires extensive activity logging. What do you recommend for some sort of monitoring and logging of user access on a Linux box?
Big thanks in advance. <34 -

So I started Software Engineering university and we started learning java. Before uni I was a c# developer and after two months I decided to work on my own project again in unity. When I was writing the code for this small game I realised that I get a lot of errors. Turns out that I just initialized boolean instead of bool. Thanks java

Hello devs! My first time here! I'll share a doubt with you: today I have a team with mobile and Internet together (2 iOS + 2 Android + 3 Internet fullstack) and others. Is it a common layout having team mixed like that? Or you have separate teams for Internet and other for Mobile only? Thanks!! 😃3

Hi guys and gals!
Currently in the search for a good management team for solo freelancing projects. I've used Trello before but am looking for something that maybe tracks time spent on tasks for hourly charge and is more defined to web development/design.
If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance! Keep on keeping on!4 -
Dev. manager: hey did you check in your changes for that hotfix?
Me: "git checkout master && git log -1"
Dev. Manager: thanks! -
Hi, in my JS project I have to update a variable value that is getting a text input's value in order to use it dynamically with different functions across my program. What would be the best approach to doing this?
Should I make a function that updates the variable for every character typed or should I simply get the value when the function is called?
Thanks!2 -
Hello, fellow ranters, I have a question for the web developers here.
I decided I want to explore web development but don't know where to start.
I'm assuming the first step would be to learn HTML, but after that? What should I learn?
Thanks in advance8 -
Hi everyone
I have a python script that continuously collects data for me. I want to be able to display that data on a node js server. How should I go about this? I was thinking of maybe having the python script send get requests to the server but I feel that is not the right answer. Let me know if u guys need more info, thanks!5 -
Last question for today, I promise…
For my side project, I plan on saving a URL and an array of strings associated with that URL. I want to be able to search and sort the resulting DB from a frontend without needing complicated queries. Is this the use case for a key-value pair DB? Let me know if I’m not clear and thanks!14 -
> hey can you make this script in a way that it drops TrID for whatever system, including on ARM, instead of doing the checking Pythonic? Thanks!
> Sorry, TrID isn't open-source.
