Ranted about him before but this just came to my mind again.
The fucking windows (to the max) fanboy I had to deal with for too long.
Every time I mentioned something about what programming language to use in a project he was NOT part of:
"I know it's none of my business, BUT I think you should use .net"
Every time I mentioned something about what server system to use:
"I know it's none of my business but I think you should use Windows server"
(All Linux guys)
Every time I'd say something positive about Linux he'd search as long as needed to prove that that was also a windows thing (didn't even come close sometimes)
Every time I told the devs there about a windows security issue (as in "guys they found this thing, install the next update to stay safe :)" - "ahhh will do, thanks for letting know man!") he'd search as long as needed to prove that Linux also had had security issues like that.
(Okay?!? I know?!? I'm just trying to notify people so their systems stay secure and they're genuinely happy with that so STFU)
Oh yeah. Hey guys. 2 things.
First off. Forgot to say. Officially got a job. Finally. So thank you for all the help/advice and patience with my depressive rants!!
I'm in a new chapter of my life now so thanks.
I FUCKING HATE MY JOB8
I love how Developers always seem to make the greatest communities, there's no hate. Just the most genuinely nice and helpful people. Thanks guys for being here!!19
This rant is devoted to my study friends. You see, I never knew what it was to not have people making fun of you/bullying you until I started my study.
Elementary school + highschool was one big mess of bullying, being made fun of and hardly having any friends.
At highschool I decided I wanted to go into IT. Especially programming. Programming in particular because when I was programming, I, for once, was the one in control. The code listened to me and for that tiny moment I was god.
Never really had much friends though and when I told my parents I wanted to do an MBO study (application development), my mother warned me that although she and my dad supported me with whatever my decision would be, MBO level studies were rough because of the general mindset/atmosphere there.
I thought fuck it, I want to do programming because that seems awesome and maybe I'll even make some friends with the same interests!
Then study arrived. Met a few guys with similar interests and we started hanging out together.
And then it came back just like before. Two guys who loved bullying and I was still a quite easy target because I couldn't stand up for myself.
But, then something happened. I liked a girl, she was in the hallway and two of the bullies (there were about 4-5 in total) got up and started fucking around with me (about her) and I just sat there, not daring to do anything with tears in my eyes.
Then two of my classmates noticed it, quickly came to my desk and started pushing the guys away with 'back the fuck off, what the fuck has he done to you?!'. Then one of those guys (now still about my best friend) came to me to see if I was alright.
We started talking. Then at some point, another bully had a go at me. This would be the final time. He was about 2 meters tall (I was about 160cm or something) and stood there in the door opening with a very nasty smile saying all nasty stuff, trying to intimidate me and probably tried to make me feel like crap again.
Nice guy on my right asked me to step to the left. Gave that guy a huge fucking foot in his chest and he smacked onto the ground. Made a gentleman's sign like 'go ahead, sir!' while gesturing towards the door.
From that moment on the bullying stopped. Throughout my study, some other bad things happened but those guys were always there for me.
Although I've lost touch with most of the guys (they're on social media, I'm not really), we still meet up once in a while and have a lot of beers while talking and laughing and thinking back to the good times we had together.
The study wasn't the best for what we were taught as in studying but it's the best choice I've ever made nonetheless.
Oh and that best friend and I still have loads of contact!12
Hey guys! We are really happy to share the pre-alpha version of devRantron. The purpose of this pre-release is to test it on different platforms and get some feedback on the features that we have already implemented.
Download it here: https://github.com/tahnik/...
Massive thanks to all the contributors especially @Dacexi, @sirwindfield and @phantomBKB: https://github.com/tahnik/...
Please feel free to open any issues that you encounter.
Major missing features are Notifications, Settings and User Profile. They will come soon.8
This one colleague at my work.
I'm pretty new to a lot stuff and I stress out about some stuff a lot more than the other guys, mostly because I'm scared I might not be able to fix it.
But whenever that happens, I explain this guy what's going on and then, while making jokes, talking in a very calming way, he always knows to fix it in no time!
For everyone who does this, thanks for being there for the little/new guys :)1
Just a quick update (been a little) on the privacy website!
Although both the frontend and the backend need quite some work, I managed, with the help of some other guys, to get everything (only for the IM section yet for now) loaded from the database instead of hardcoded! Yes, that also means that the tiny icon colors are either red or green based on database values :).
Going to keep working on this tomorrow in the hopes I can also get some other subjects ready.
Wish me luck guys I think this is it. I'm going to be financially set for real this time woohoo! Big thanks to my man billy6
It's quite awesome how some people can make you realize how much you actually know about some stuff and how skilled you are on a certain subject.
Shoutout to @404response for making me realize that i actually know quite some stuff about security/privacy and also a shoutout to @devisionbyzero for making me realize that I'm actually quite good with linux/linux servers :).
*at front end job interview*
Me: so what kind of version control do you use?
CTO: well, one of the guys here developed our own system.. bla bla bla *turns around laptop*
Me: *sees internet explorer* NO THANKS 😬4
I’m doing this guys website for FREE. As a favor to my mom. This is the shit I have to deal with as thanks.
He gave me some images he wanted on his new site I’m developing on Tuesday. Woke up to this email.9
$ rant --not-a-rant
I made it guys
I know this might not be a rant but Im sure nobody will understand this better than my fellow ranters/devs
Four years ago (16yo) I learned about a software development company in my city and Ive been wanting to.work for them ever since, at first I couldnt because I need half college credits, after because I landed a way more comprehensive job, but now I start on monday. The thing is few people have landed a dev job there as students because of what they ask but I MADE IT.
Thanks for reading this far.20
This post is a random, but who cares?
So about a year ago, I got a message from (at the time) a random guy with more ++ than me. This guy was @linuxxx. The message went something like this:
L: Do you want to join our little privacy chat?
L: Ok. send me your email.
.. And that was my gateway drug to the coolest group of people I have ever met.
Eventually riot.im got boring, then we moved over to signal and I met even more cool people.
So. After a year and a few weeks, I would like to say Thank You to this group, and to devRant for being an amazing place where like-minded people can meet eachother and learn from eachother.
Im going to inevitably forget some people, but the groups members are mentioned in the comments.52
Yay my stickers finally arrived! Thanks guys <3 @dfox @trogus
And it freaked out my mum. She called me all panicked like "you've got an international letter what did you do did you get scammed or something"
"Mum, those are stickers...I got for free"
"Ohhhh... ok then"
But shre was very worried there ^^'19
Yesterday way my one year devRant anniversary! It's been a good year guys and gals (and whatever genders are out here). I can't be bothered to look up rant counts etc right now because I'm in the middle of my exams and I'm fucking exhausted but a bit thanks to trogus and dfox for creating this awesome platform and also a big shoutout to all the awesome people I met through here and have good contact with :). Keep rocking, devs!2
tl;dr: thanks! :)
I just love this community.
The idea of devRant is great. The emotions, the shared knowledge in each post. Never seen such densely packed quality content in a social media! :D
I enjoy spending my time here, though I do not post that much. Reading just about the life of @linuxxx, @gitpush @alexDeLarge (to name a few) share with us is just wonderful, it makes me happy! :)
I think this post is meant as a thank you, I guess? Just felt like it... hope you guys don't mind having read a non-dev related post.^^'
@dfox and @trogus, you guys are awesome as fuck!4
So here it is. I don't know what the f is wrong with you guys but you somehow got me to a whopping 2^12 increments. Thanks I guess. Now I can show off in front of my friends that I have a lot of internet points. Fucking muggles...
Also let me address a rising issue here on devRant and that is:
Stop bloody confusing this place with devHeyGuysWhatsYourOpinionOnXYZ?
For real people. That's not cool.
Depression update two.
Thanks for amazing support guys!
I have made decision to have a digital detox. Today I did have another bout of depression accompanied with a mild case of confused state of mind and suicidal thoughts. I have found the triggers(Social media and too much time spent on the internet.) I have lost a lot of weight too. From 68KG -> 46 KG in span of weeks. So I hope I will catch you soon after I recover from it.
Fuck depression. If anyone is having bouts of depression please contact your health-care provider or friends/family.
Love you all. ❤️🙏☺️12
@dfox Thank you very very much for the duck. And biggest thanks goes to @olverine who actually bought the duck as a reward for solving his crypto challenge. Thank you guys13
just stumbled over the devbanner-project: https://devbanner.center/
thanks to you guys^^ these things look really cool22
So guys and gurls...
I'm a member of devRant for about 1.5 weeks now. I already have over 130 likes on my rants in total about things I was never able to post without being labeled a nerd. I literally love you guys! Thanks to @dfox and @trogus for making it possible for us to discuss things that matter for us!7
Just when I had given up hope and thought South Africa was just a little to far for the devRant stickers to go - it arrived! It's looks like it's been through blood, months and tears to get here, but it's here! Thanks guys!
Thanks @dfox and Tim for the awesome stickers which miraculously made it all the way to Sydney! Love seeing that you guys are so in touch with your audience 😊12
How to post a question on a forum:
1. Create an account with a cute girl name like AnnaLovesYou143
2. Post your question. Ex. "How do I use Google? Thanks xOxO <3"
3. Wait for guys to give you a complete answer for your question or an offer to help you via a private message.8
Guys i got 1000++!!!
It's not that i'm special now.
Just more special than others.
Oh I remember the old times when devRant veterans like @linuxxx or @Alice posted their first rants and I welcomed them!
I even remember that night I gave @dfox the idea of creating this app! "That's stupid.", he said. "If this app should be succesful I owe you some special kind of duck we will produce for some reasons I don't know yet!", he said.
But for real now: Thanks everybody for being a part of this and for bringing me so much joy!8
Inherited project from another company that the owner wants updated rather than rebuilt.
The comments could write a programmers joke book as you can tell it's been passed between multiple developers.
This is a literal excerpt
//Not sure why this line needs to be here but it breaks without it
//Nope I don't know either
//FFS now I have to deal with this. Thanks guys :/2
I would like to ask you guys for advice.
I am a content manager who is gradually given more and more dev tasks. That is great because I want to become a webdev. However I have one big issue. Whenever I write code (any code) I feel ashamed because I know that anyone else could do better. I am also ashamed to show my work to my colleagues because I am afraid of what they might think of me. I know that they are good people and they would probably help me out but still...
Someone once tried to explain to me that I am not my code and whenever my code is being evaluated I am not the one who is being judged, it is my code, my current knowledge. I understand conceptually what he was trying to tell me but I just can't feel it.
Did you have similar feelings when you started out?
Thanks in advance.19
Just realized that I am not at +1000 points and I must say...well. That I really like this community. Being able to talk to other people with similar interests helps me get through the day in ways that I cannot describe. Where I am from there aren't that many developers at all and those that exist around do not have the experience, talent, or knowledge that the user base here has. This is a diverse group, with people comming from different backgrounds and tech stacks and I learn a lot from each and every one of you. Thanks guys for giving me a place to be at when software gets crazy. Cheers to you all magnificent basterds, and to the awesome gentlemen that built my favorite app ever!! You guys rock!2
Me: 'alriiight let's run this code here'
Logs: 'lol the function you did is deprecated. how about you don't do that, and do the right thing instead'
What was the right thing?
I don't know. It's not on their documentation in their site.
Thanks, js devs :) you guys are the absolute best3
Hey guys, if you have some time, can you provide feedback on a new website I launched. It aggregates online product reviews and applies AI to them.
Do you think this is a useful website? Thanks in advance!32
Aww Yeh. Got them stickers. Thanks @dfox, @trogus. And to you guys for getting my post to 20++. XPS 15 looking slick.
Installed devRant about 3 weeks ago and love reading the rants, story's and comments. Just wanted to say thanks guys for making my uni experience that little bit greater. Decided today to create an account and support devRant by subscribing. Anyways hello devRanters!7
Hey guys! So I'm new new here and it would be great to get a few upvotes so that I can create my avatar as soon as possible. I love the community and I'm planning to stay active for time to come.
Guys Christmas and new year is behind the door and i would love to thanks to everyone on devRant for making this community even more awesome then it was. i remember when i started at devRant it was little community and i got my first +1 (they're called +1 now its ++) it was awesome the first ++ from @dfox i was like wooooooooowwwwww and after some time i was at 500++ then 1000 and so on yeah really nice community guys so thank you all in here very much and Merry Christmas and Happy new year !!!!!2
@dfox @trogus how is Appcelerator working out for you guys for cross platform development?
I’m going to be making/totally rewriting the mobile apps for an online service this summer and I’m looking into options.
Currently I’m considering Xamarin, React Native, and Flutter, but I looked at the devrant tech stack page and began looking into appcelerator. What made you guys choose that? What’s the experience like?
Also if anyone else has arguments to make for any of the other three go for it! I’m a fairly new (compared to a lot of people on here) dev but Im pretty confident without programming knowledge and I’m just curious what the industry recommendations/people’s opinions are.
Thanks devrant, you’re awesome!26
co-worker: what are u doing?
me: programming and learning
co-worker: but school has just started... u guys havent learnt anything yet
me: thats the great thing about programming, everything is already in the internet waiting to be read and learned. try it next time ;)
co-worker: learning out of school, no thanks4
Fairly new here. Saw the ad for this on instagram and thought it was the coolest idea ever. Thanks guys for making this app :) now I can rant about how awful my PM is.3
Got my stickers today. They look pretty sweet on my media laptop! Thanks guys for the free stuff!!!!2
I posted my first side project in producthunt today
please upvote/comment if you like the product and any type of feedback/feature requests are welcome.
You guys converted me.
I "grew up" with Visual Studio (from VS 2005). My programming career started with VBA. (All C#)
Occasionally tried to program android with eclipse... never worked out.
I know java a little bit.
To day I decided (thanks to your rants) to start a VM with ubuntu and explore Linux and start with C.7
The mail found my stickers!!
Thanks devRant devs!
I'm super glad I found this community, you guys are making me pull out less and less hair and helping me laugh5
I am also using devrant on my linux mint kde laptop...
(it's a unoffical app) its working fine :)
thanks Meadow_dev for making this.
Check this out guys :)
Thanks have a great day :)16
Hey guys, first rant. This looks like a really fun "social network".
Can someone tell me tips to code instead of playing games? Thanks!19
Hi.. Recently I began my career in IT firm but my work doesn't involve coding.
But I really aspire to become an programmer. I have been always searching playstore for apps related to programming.
Google play suggested me devRant. I installed it and found that it is the right place for me.
I hope you guys will be helpful and kind.
Thanks Guys !!!6
I've been lurking here for quite some time now. Decided to create my account today.
I'd love to share a good rant but the last couple of days were the most calm I ever had. Thanks to you guys giving me hope and strength and see others feel the same.
Thanks for the good posts and funny comments.4
A follow up for this rant : https://devrant.com/rants/1429631/...
its morning and i have been awoke all night, but i am so happy and feel like crying seeing you people's response. :''''') Thank-You for helping a young birdie like me from getting exploit.
In Summery, I am successfully out of this trickery, but with cowardice, a little exploited and being continuously nagged by my friend as a 'fool'.
Although i would be honest, i did took a time to take my decision and got carried away by his words.
After a few hours of creating a group, he scheduled a conference call , and asked me to submit the flow by which my junior devs will work.
At that time i was still unclear about weather to work or not and had just took a break from studies. So thought of checking the progress and after a few minutes, came up with a work-flow, dropped in the group and muted it.
At night i thought of checking my personal messages , and that guy had PMed me that team is not working, check on their progress. This got me pissed and i diverted the topic by asking when he would be mailing my letter of joining.
His fucking reply to this was :"After the project gets completed!"
(One more Example of his attempts to be manipulative coming up, but along with my cowardice ) :/
WTF? with a team like this and their leader being 'me'( who still calls him noob after 2 internships and 10 months android exp), this project would have taken at least one month and i was not even counting myself in the coding part(The Exams).
So just to clarify what would be the precise date by which he is expecting the task, to which he said "27th"(i.e, tomorrow!)
I didn't responded. And rather checked about the details of the guy( knew that the company was start-up, but start-ups does sound hopeful, if they are doing it right) .A quick social media search gave me the results that he is a fuckin 25 year old guy who just did a masters and started this company. there was no mention of investors anywhere but his company's linkedin profile showed up and with "11-50" members.
After half an hour i told him that am not in this anymore, left the group and went back to study.(He wanted to ask for reasons, but i denied by saying a change of mind ,personal problems, etc)
Well the reality is over but here comes the cowardice part:
1)Our team was working on a private repo hosted on my account and i voluntarily asked him to take back the ownership, just to come out of this safely w/o pissing him off.
2)The "test" he took of me was the wireframe given by their client and which was the actual project we 5 were working on. So, as a "test", i created 15 activities of their client's app and have willingly transferred it to them.
3) in my defence, i only did it because (i) i feared this small start-up could harm my reputation on open platforms like linkedin and (ii)the things i developed were so easy that i don't mind giving them. they were just ui, designed a lot quickly but except that, they were nothing(even a button needs a code in the backend to perform something and i had not done it) . moreover, the guys working under me had changed a lot of things, so i felt bad for them and dropped the idea of damaging it.
Right now am just out of sleep, null of thoughts and just wondering weather am a good person, a safe player or just a stupid, easily manipulated fool
But Once again My deepest regard from my heart for @RustyCookie , @geaz ,@tarstrong ,and @YouAreAPIRate for a positive advice.
My love for devrant is growing everyday <3 <3 <3 <36
Guys do you know some good music for coding ???? I really need to inject hype or relaxation into the long long way of coding ?? If you know any good playlist in spotify for coding please say in comment
Hey guys, I just wanted to know that are there any websites which can pay for coding or stuff similar to that? I am good in programming in several languages but I also need to pay college fees and internet bills.
Its been less than a month i joined this awesome community.
Like it was built for guys like me who love to code/develop.
Thanks @dfox and @trogus. !!!7
was trying to present a project to an audience.
Apple VGA adapter got jammed.
my friend was a little too strong in pulling it out and the adapter wires got ripped out.
i see hot glue on the parts where the output wires connect to the circuit board.
yes! hot glue! now you know why it came out so easily!
i think you guys can imagine what happened to my presentation..
*At Family Dinner Party*
Aunt- "Oh you're on of those web code guys, that's so cool!"
Me- "Thanks! So what are you do-"
Aunt- "So I have the best idea for a website, we could me millions!"
Me- "Is the food ready..?"2
Just signed up today and I have spent the last few hours on here. I don't know how you guys get any work done while being members on here :-P

My new helper arrived. Note! Check your packing material for the santa hat! I almost threw mine away thinking it was forgotten.
So apparently I can't test my apps on my own device without paying my Apple Developer Certificate.
I knew it is needed to pay for it if you want to publish/distribute your app but c'mon... This is ridiculous.
My app was literally a fresh app creation, a fucking white screen one page fucking app and when I tried to run in on my iPhone, then I ended up having this problem:
dyld: Library not loaded: @rpath/libswiftCore.dylib
Referenced from: /var/containers/Bundle/Application/BCD48EAA-82C2-46F6-ADEE-45C740C3B66D/HWorld.app/HWorld

If any of you guys know how to solve it without paying (even more) PLEASE let me know
We got it! Only took just over a week. Thanks!
Best pic I could get before the little monster started eating it.2
Thanks guys for the help in the last weeks.
This is what I was so hard trying to print.
Btw... reminder to self, plastic expands. That's why the stepper has duck tape instead of screws lol33
* Sit back and enjoy the night watching series/movies*
* Chills in the weekends*
- It's nice to code at work
*anxiety building up*
Should I code all time?
When I get home I'll start a project8

Been going interview crazy this week! The Dev rant community has helped me so much I'd like to thank each and everyone of you for helping me finally get running!
Have my first coding test to do today, have to build the attached file and i'm excited to get started! If you spot any pitfuls please let me know!
Thanks you guys so much! Will let you know how I get on!16
My new coworker: That "I know everything about all and I'm better than you" kind. Is working on Accounting but already has her fingers on my work, telling my boss things like "that's easy to do"...
Of course, she knows absolutely nothing about programming and I.T., but is easy for my boss to believe an easy lie than a complex truth.
(sorry, crude language and caps follows)
Hey, listen you fucking excuse of person, DO YOUR FUCKING JOB and stay away of my DAMN GOOD FUCKING CODE and my FUCKING SERVERS.
Not going to give you admin access in a gazillion years, even if my life depends on it.
And stop saying nonsenses about things that you WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND, because those things are too complex and abstract for your little stupid mind to understand.
Go ahead, mess with me! Will sue you to the end of your FUCKING world!
This is absolutely therapeutical.4
I've been using devRantron recently to try it out. It's hard enough to be productive when I just get notifications on my phone, but getting desktop notifications that pop up over my code... how can I not immediately go look who commented on what??
So thanks guys, the app is great, but I have a love/hate relationship with the desktop notifs due to my lack of self-control.2
I just love how upset the sticker looks with ThinkPad.
Thanks you guys! Your envelope managed to overcome even the horror we know as the Israeli Postal Company 👏4
Just ranted for 90 minutes on the Long Island Railroad and it seemed like 5 minutes! Thanks guys for all the cool rants.
Ok guys. I have a very important question to ask you.
I need your help. How do you explain to your girlfriend/boyfriend that you are a developer so you need to spend a lot of time on your computer? My new girlfriend does not want to understand.
Hey everyone, I want to start an IT company that focuses on web and Android applications development. I along with my teammates have planned to take freelancing projects from various websites in the beginning, I was thinking if you guys could guide me or give me some tips to jumpstart my career and the tips may help me in the long run.
Thanks in advance.
PS my team is fairly experienced since we've been working on local projects since 2014.15
devRant keeps getting better and better! Collabs are great and the new avatar pets rock! Thanks devRant team.
What do you guys think of my new pets?2
Thanks a lot guys! You are really awesome! :')
I promise (in a non-js way) I will use that stressball and take a lot of care with it.
Thanks to all the 203 cool devs that ++ my rant!!
Im a Software Engineer from Germany. I've just heard that delevopers are much better paid in the US compared to Europe. In Europe/Germany i would get about 40k a year as Somebody who just finished university(bachelor degree). Can somebody confirm that ? You dont have to Post your exact income :P just Let me know if that's True, because i am Thinking about going to Work in the US in a few Years ..maybe some of you have german Friends in the US it Industry ? :)
Thanks for the answers.21
I'm a C# developer and I programming (with C#) since 2016. Does anyone know a C# project where I can help?
Thanks for your attention!
Have a nice day ;-)8
@dfox and @trogus I have to say I'm very impressed with the quality of the stickers I got back in October. They have been enduring near daily use from taking my laptop in and out of my backpack to dealing with my sweaty palms on the keyboard deck. No discoloration at all.
Appreciate you guys and this platform you are cultivating! Thanks again.12
this.post != rant
WISH ME LUCK GUYS! I'LL BE ON A REGIONAL PROGRAMMING COMPETITION TOMORROW AND I'M NOT ROOTING TO WIN. ALL I WANT IS TO SOLVE AT LEAST 1 PROBLEM. THANKS! HAHAHA2
Thanks for the stickers guys! I'll save the others for when I get my new rig!
(Yeah I know it's the wrong way up but the face just looks too good like that)1
So, I have a bit of a question for you guys..
I'm a self taught coder, but I think I lack some elements regarding the architecture side of software development.
Does anyone have some valuable sources to learn about it?
Thanks in advance :)11
Hi guys I'm new in dev
I was wondering what was best to learn first : Angular, React or Vue ?
I already know JS and JQuery.
Thanks guys :)36
Just received my sticker and I am glad of being a part of the DevRant community. Thanks for you for being the best community I've ever seen 😊8
I just received a second pack of stickers from devrant! (Don't know why but thanks! You guys are awesome!) So I decided to make a devRan pi1
Less stressful days from now on! Thanks guys! It took only 1 month and 5 days to them to travel from New York to Central Finland, but all worth it.10
Stupid fucking communities normally all pieces of garbage. And no, there is no built in garbage collection, but then I find this, I POST 1 THING AND I GET GREAT RESPONES AND REALLY NICE ENGAGEMENT LIKE WTF3
Finally got my devRant Stickers!
Thanks David for fast delivery to Germany!
Hope you guys will remain successful!

Some little things can really boost your mood. Thank you @dfox and @trogus and thanks you all guys for being a great company :)1
I think I just burned 2 Nanos.
I'm using a 30W soldering Iron and had to resolder the pins of one and solder the pins of a new one.
Now they don't work. One allows for code upload but won't turn on, other seams to have a short circuit.
Could have I burned the circuits due to a 30W soldering iron?
Also used a little of flux on the pins, can flux pass energy and make bridges?
Hey, i don't wanna start a war here, but.... what you guys use more: GitHub or bitbucket? and in which case should i use one or another?
Yes, i have tried google, but i wanna know what you think about those two.
Never hated or loved Microsoft.
After joining devRant, within 4 days I hate Microsoft more than ever. Thanks Guys.
Hey guys, quick question regarding employers and stuff.
I'm 14 and I've been learning and making things in PHP for around 1 and a half years now. I quite like PHP as, despite the code being quite messy sometimes, it's super easy to learn, and has plenty of features for any use case. My biggest concern is that, when I end up getting a job, whilst 5 and a half years of experience using the language is good, do you guys think PHP will still be in-demand, or should I look towards learning a new stack? Perhaps I should use Ruby on Rails, or Express - React and Redux, or maybe Django? With so many options available for developers, I'm finding it difficult to choose a stack that will stay in-demand in the future. Could anyone help me out with this? Thanks.
Edit: I've been learning Laravel, too.16
Guys, wish me luck for tomorrow, I'm so nervous.
But thanks to everybody who gives me good advices and tips10
Hey Guys, what Linux programs do you recommend for programming and development? Thanks in advance.21
Thanks for the stickers guys! The rectangular one will be going on the back of my car and the others on my laptop!2
So finally i said goodbye to ubuntu forever but I stayed on debian have installed and setup crunchbang its performance is much better and this os is so lighter.
my wifi issue is fixed here didn't do anything at all. I'm loving this os
thanks all those guys who tried to help me fix wifi issue6
So it began with i finally decided to change to linux ubuntu.
An error screen pops up if i remove the usb now. But if i didnt and press restart, the install screen reappears again prompting me to either try ubuntu, or install.
What am i doing wrong then? Thanks a lott.19
Yo guys, so I'm still in High School and we're learning Delphi(not proud of it at all). So I came here in tje hopes of finding guidance as to what language/s I should try and learn myself and where I could do that. I also want to be able to make cool stuff xD
Thanks in advance6
Not a rant, thought I'd share this here.
My 2 bestfriends and I are web developers and the three of us work for different companies and reside in different cities. So, I got these today and decided to fly over next month to where my bestfriends are currently residing to personally give them devrant stickers :)
Thanks devRant for this! You guys rock!
Wait spotify is blocked in my office but other guys spotify are not blocked? Oh well I'll just use the unblocked deezer. Thanks to my coworker.15
Guys how is the linux support on amd ryzen 5 2500U ? Last time i saw post posted was 2 months ago and it was getting better.
Im going to buy some powerfull notebook and for now acer aspire 3 with amd ryzen 5 2500U seems good but im open to any suggestions around 700€
It needs to compile android OS not apps which is hard CPU intensive and memory but also some gaming. Low-medium on newer games is OK. And also NEEDS good Linux support and around 700€ but nothing more then 790€ but if its really good deal i might think about it.

Hi guys, I'm planing to move to the Netherlands(Amsterdam) by the middle/end of this year and I would like to ask for advices, recomendadtions or any info is welcome.
I'm 23 years old living in Spain since 12. Frontend Developer with 2 years experience in Angular, Node.
Also would like to know the salaries range for frontend Developer if someone knows anything.
Thanks a lot11
Just wanted to update you guys on the status of the weather app i was working on.
I have decided to stop working on it for the time being but might return to it at a later date.
The decision was in part due to it being a fairly generic idea in a already saturated market.
Thanks for the support however and hope my next project will be as well received.4
Hi guys @dfox @trogus , just wanted to report a tiny annoyance lol
If a rant is posted with a picture, then edited, I don't see any way to remove the picture without deleting the rant.
The "Attach img/gif" should say remove current attachment when the post is being edited, or an additional button maybe.
Thanks, others can give suggestions if got em (:3
guys i did a minor fuck up..... delayed the timeline of the project..... client will call in 6 hours .... i'm covering the damage ...but in meantime ..... what should i say to him when he calls ..?
"Sorry for the confusion" ?
"Thanks for understanding" ?4
!rant but question to you experts:
Hey, guys. I'm currently trying to up my game in terms of web development. I already know js, html, php and css quite well (enough to become a tutor at my university) but I'm not shure which frameworks (serverside and clientside) are worth considering. Until now I wrote everything from scratch, which is not very sustainable (waaaay to much code to maintain)
Could you please tell me your softwarestacks, what library to use, which frameworks to learn (Vue/React/Angular/...)? Every opinion is very appreciated and won't go unheard. Thanks in advance.
btw: you guys are the nicest people I ever met online. Thank you for being so awesome.2
OMG! What are you doing guys, the ultimate offer is here by Godaddy. Now I can afford food and domain at the same time, thanks Godaddy!5
Thanks a lot @dfox @torgus @tahnik for implementing the scroll freature with the arrow key in devRantron.
I had maded a post way back
Sorry for posting so late !
You guys rock !!3
@dfox @trogus would you guys mind sharing some statistics on devRant? I've been very curious about the following metrics:
- Daily active users
- Weekly active users
- All time rants count
- Monthly comments count
- Total users count
Thanks for reading and thanks even more for making this beautiful platform 😃9
I wrote a blog on Medium about things I’ve learned as a starting developer up until now. And I thought I’d share my journey with you guys.
Feedback is definitely welcome, but be easy on me since this is the first article I share on here.
Thanks in advance, have a nice weekend! 🖖4
Hey, guys, little help here I am about to graduate and I want a job as Linux support engineer or junior sysadmin but apparently, the job experience required for these jobs is 1-2 years. Any suggestions how should I proceed with this because my other option will be to opt for software developer then.
Thanks in advance.3
If I charge a 220v capacitor with 5v... Does it accumulate up to 220v or just the voltage I give it? Thanks14
It's the small things in life that can make my day.
Was pretty bummed out due to a shitty day at work today, no one was to blame for it but me just not getting in a good flow.
On my way home I learned that devRant also has a Facebook so ofcourse I went to check it out.
After a bit of scrolling I noticed one of my rants got featured. I know it's a trivial thing but really made my day. Thanks guys ❤️
Indie game devs: I have a couple of questions for you guys, sorry for my naivity and the subjectivity of some of the questions.
Is it as fun as it sounds?
Do you work as a team?
What tech/language do you use?
What platform/os do you produce games for?
Is your primary income from making games?
Im asking because I would like to get into it, but want to get a realistic view of what it's like.
Thanks guys. Please also take this chance to post your work.5
I feel for you guys,
My inbox is bombarded with emails asking me to give my permission for saving my data again, thanks to the new European data protection laws, which will go live the day after tomorrow.
Which means a lot of you guys are doing overtime today and tomorrow to work towards this deadline. Not me, though. Still. I want to share two sentiments with you:
1. Whatever management just decided at the last minute that they need that done before Friday, fuck them.
2. I repeat my initial words, I feel for you.
Ok guys. Here’s a company who used to offer a slack alternative free and unlimited but now charges anywhere from 79 dollars to 100 to 790 dollars for the same product. Company is Ryver. I dare say they just pissed off tons of customers who loved them for their generous limits. The worst thing is is that if you already have more than 6 users from when they offered the generous free plan, they put you into READ ONLY even for existing members. I thought I’d share this corporate fuckery with people who care. Unless you have tons of cash to burn, don’t try their product. Thanks for reading.3
OMG... I want to thank my mother for changing my diapers for many years, my brother for all the games he no longer plays, my wife for actually making money, my plant for the awesome smell, God for maybe doing something (I guess), thanks @dfox, @trogus, and each one of you guys that deemed my rants worthy of your ++.1
Hey guys, I have a problem.
So I'm a sophomore in uni, and I just went to a career fair and scored an internship with a big aerospace and defense company-- pretty exciting, right? The only problem is, it isn't anywhere near my parents' house, so I would have to get an apartment and find transportation to and from work. My living stipend isn't all that much, and there's no way I can get furniture all the way across the country, and if I bought furniture I wouldn't have anything to do with it during the school year since I live in the dorms... See my problem?
TL;DR: Have any of you guys had undergrad internships, and how did you find a place to live/way to get back and forth from work if you didn't have a car? Thanks guys!4
I'm a computer engineering student.
I'm very much interested in Systems and networking.
That's why I was thinking of persuing cyber-security as a career option.
But I'm not quite sure if that is a good choice.
Also I don't know how to proceed in order to achieve excellence in cyber-security.
It would be a great help if you guys could help me.
First time posting. But I need an advice, I want to learn a programming language to get a better job. I have just the basics of C#, should I keep going with C# or go with F#? I heard a lot of good thing about F#. Thanks. You guys are awesome!6
Hey guys i relased a new app called: SaleMonkey. Im currently working on the next update an would like to get some serious feedback from people who look at the app with a developer mindset to spot some Problems.
I hope its not Bad if i poste a linkt to my app. You can get it here:
Currently only on Android. Ios Version is planed for next year.
Hey guys, I want to switch from Windows dev to Linux dev but I am coding game using C# and Monogame's framework. I'd like to know if you think it is possible and viable to code big game projects with vscode ? And is there plugins inside vscode which can add automaticly the framework's needs and create breakpoint step by step for debugging like Visual studio do ?
Thanks for your help ! :)17
Do any of you guys know an android app which sets a "fake" location and goes along a path (and does not contain ads if possible)? Currently have a GPS based project I need to test
So instead of hiring someone qualified they took someone from an irrelevant department and are making me teach him while doing all my own work -_-
My latest project is going quite well, I think some of guys might like it! Basically it is a entirely new Fallout game with multiplayer aspects made in Unreal. Now most of you are saying "dude make textures is going to take years!" However I can extract models and textures from Fallout itself, saving time. The next question will be the legal stuff however Zenimax gave me permission as long as I don't restrict access, money or otherwise. If you want to check it out or think you can help go to the sub Reddit and click the discord link!
I'm starting my first programming intern job in a week.
It's a big company and have many projects and they liked me because I knew some Java from college.
I obviously have no industry Java experience but am looking to review the book used in my class & the projects I did.
I'm still kinda nervous a little cuz I don't have any idea what it's going to be like.
What could be advised to do while waiting a week? Any good Java brush up idea
Guys, I am thinking of possibly putting some of my old projects on GitHub.
I don't understand the licensing thing.
Can someone give me any resources for learning about it?
I need to know, how can I add a license to my project, what type of licenses are there , which one best suits me, etc.
Thanks in advance.11
So I am a Ruby guy since I don't now when. Probably forever. Lately I have to code Groovy. People are telling me all the time that Groovy is like Ruby. Let me tell you: No! Groovy is not like Ruby. Groovy is shitty Java with a slightly more usable syntax. Nothing more. It is so so tedious to code and reminds me why I stopped coding Java like 8 years ago. The fact that some features resemble Ruby syntax makes it even harder for me because I cannot code and facepalm at the same time. And I automatically type Ruby code all the time because it looks so similar in some places. I don't have that problem with other languages. Just Groovy. And the fact that Java people like it tells me how bad Java really is. It's just dirty. Guys, I feel so dirty now. And showering this morning didn't help. Had to get that off my chest. Thanks for "listening"9
I started as Android Developer at a comapny today and was given a project with 30% already done but without any comments.
Can you guys suggest some forums or sites like stackoverflow that will help me.
Can you guys give me Name suggestion for a website?
Under the name we will create mobile apps and websites. It will free to use for anyone.
Preferred .com domain
Thanks in advance :)11
How do I calculate the cost of a machine in power consumed?
Like, my 3D printer has a 40A power suply, how could I calculate to get a € value from it?
What are your favorite sites for finding developer jobs? I have sent out about a million or so resumes in the last couple of weeks and I am having minimal luck in getting any responses despite a pretty solid skill set and extensive experience. I have been through Glassdoor, Indeed, CyberCoders, Monster, Craigslist, and LinkedIn. Do you guys have any sites that I may have overlooked? Anything tech specific? Thanks!7
Does anyone have any ideas how to start "learning" WordPress? It's a pretty hot area in my neck of the woods and I think it should be something that I am at least aware of 📖
hey guys, what CS/software or just general computer info magazines do ya'll read? (U.S) i want to subscribe to some. thanks6
Linux - Debian
So I finally have a phone that can run Linux without lag
Already have Debian installed and lxde... Im a complete noob, what should I install more? And any tips for a new user??
I'm in a rut I haven't programmed in 20 days I feel depressed and like my life is a complete waste of time. I know this isn't a place to vent but I feel like maybe someone's been in my place before and they can help. thanks for reading you guys are awesome.5
Not sure where else to ask but here, as I am an unsocial creature; But I need new music!
My general favourite type of music is anything from any of the wipeout games, 90s techno style, think of the backing music from the film Hackers, and that's pretty much my vibe 90% of the time.
You guys got any suggestions? I can't be the only one here into deep techno/progressive industrial techno whatever you can call it I am really unsure!
prodigy, 808 state, wipeout style, possibly borderline on keygen/chiptune type music depending how its done
Thanks guys! *hug*2
So i decided to hit the gym last night because why not? Now i haven't gone to a gym in a long time, so my stupid self thought why not lift some weights, and rather than starting with something light and gradually increasing the weight i went for the heaviest dumbbells, guess who's lying in the bed now, not even able to lift his hands to code? This fucking sucks i can't even lift a damn spoon without having cramps, i tried rubbing some massage gel but it doesn't seem to do any difference, do you guys have any advice? Thanks :)2
Business Rep: Hi dev guys, you know that priority 1 work you were doing? We've decided GDPR is important, can you sort it for Friday? OK, thanks, bye.
Hey guys, I'll be starting my oscp/pwk course soon, any suggestions as to what should I study beforehand or types of attacks I should practice?
About getting Help.
I've been needing lots of Help and explanations about small electronics and Arduino stuff.
What is the best to place such questions, where we do really get answers and replies to noobs?
Or anyone here, one of the Arduino / Electronic Pros who doesn't mind handling my questions :p
Should I learn C# or Java?
There are many topics over the internet but a direct opinion from you guys would be appreciated.
I would also know, what does C# have in common with asp.NET and web application development? It isn't clear to me
Just joined the ++ dark side. I've been part of this community for a while now and it's on of the best if not the best I've ever seen!
Even though I don't have a close connection to any of you I still want you to know I love all you guys/galls!
Thanks to the devs for creating this wonderfull app and keeping it updates. Go get yourself a cup of coffee with this extra income.6
The devRant update is so great. So many of us love devRant and it keeps getting better and better. Thanks guys!
Guys, which code editor is better for PHP/JS/HTML/CSS? I mean, with more addons, code completion, and so on..
Atom? Sublime? Brackets? VS Code?
So radio ads for federation training keep touting having available courses in IT... Check the website and IT isn't even fucking listed... Thanks guys -.-
So 90% of the Tech Support team is off today. So I decided to jump in to help the guys out:
Me: *solves issue
(one less ticket to solve)
Reporter: "thank you for your help!"
(re-opens the ticket)
Me: *recloses the ticket
Reporter: "thanks again"
Me: smashes head into desk
How am I supposed to get tickets solved when most of the open tickets are "thank you's"!
advice && !rant
I'd love some advice from you iOS devs on devRant:
- Is it a solid career choice for a new grad? Does it limit your skillset early on?
- How open/active is the ecosystem and the open source scene?
- Storyboards? Yay or nay?
- What do you like the most about your job?
- What do you dislike the most about your job?
Thanks guys :)4
hi guys I've got a question for you
what if your manager asks for a programmer of a certain programming language (that you know but is not a master of it) for a certain project and there are only few people you know who would volunteer and they might hire other people if they don't find people inside, would you volunteer yourself given that you don't have any project with you right now or no?
thanks for those who will answer! :)
PS background abt me: univ. student, no experience in the industry yet4
Guys I need some advice. I have read some articles about sass and less. I now know sass is using Ruby and Less is using JS. Can somebody tells me the big differences of both and which is the better one to learn? (in your opinion) Thanks8
Hei guys, i'm new here and i have a big problem with stack overflow...
Why when people ask questions and then you provide an answer their that you know it works and other people apparently know the same since they upvoted my answer... then you have a crappy op who tells you that this can't be the problem. Nevertheless after i have to argue with him for a while to try to solution he then says thanks in the comment and doesn't even approve my answer ... seriously wtf is wrong with some people!!!!4
Do you guys return 200 when a search function in your API returns a not found and you attach a response in the object saying "success: false", or do you return 404? I'm confused. Thanks.
Repeater + Android 4.2.2 + Android web server
I have a stupid problem.. Mas that is the opposite of everyone else (so no Google can help me)
I want my android phone (my personal server) to connect directly to the router, and never to the repeater (the port 80 is blocked this way)
How can I do this magic?
Not to ask the same question twice, but really hope for answers from you experienced devs.
How did you guys move into landing clients for yourself? Also, Have any of you used Instagram and landed gigs?
Thanks in advance guys/gals10
hey guys I am planning to make my first open source project(more like a library) but I am afraid that my library won't even get attention so what you guys say is it worth a time . You know it would be great if you can say something about how was it like when you released an open source library .Thanks for the help community. 😄11
Enki is awesome... Thanks for the invite code guys.. Here's mine if you need an invite:
Happy learning :)
spent all day with a new project, maybe you guys can help.
I have two p2p cameras that I want to setup and access when my family goes on vacation.
Cameras are working (with mildly success) , now, what Is the best option to access them from the Internet?
I can send e-mails, but can't config the SMTP server (don't know why always gives connection error, but guessing that maby this kind of products are blocked from sending e-mails), tried Gmail, mail, and Hotmail.
ftp-server.. don't have any online (have a VPS with 200 mb free ram...)
Hey all, can you guys recommend some great books on database theory and design. Something aimed towards intermediate towards advanced. It doesn't have to be sql, I just want to learn how to make a kick a#@ db.
An opportunity to make some money via a bit of web development at the company my gf works at has popped up. I don't know the details and I kind of loathe web development but hey, money!
However I have never dealt with another company or talked with them about hosting options etc, any advice or things I might need to know or do?
I know security isn't supposed to be an issue as it is just an open site for showing information; if I take it on I will likely make it using ASP.NET as that is what I use in my job.
Thanks in advance guys3
Currently trying to start learning C#, to build a plugin for an ERP System called Uniconta. Something samiliar to Microsoft C5.
Been wanting to learn C# etc for a long time, and now, I suppose I found my motivation.
So, how'd you guys start? I could try to download their examples, and start manipulating. But is that the right way to go around it? :)
At this moment I only have knowledge in web dev, such as HTML, CSS, JS, PHP etc.
Thanks in advance4
I am thinking of a new Laptop for developing abroad. Also because my PC is to much power crunching.
I first thought of an MacBook. Thanks to my human intelligence I have thrown away this idea.
I may want to use an surface pro (not the beefiest one, just like i5, 8gb RAM and 265ssd) or an laptop with Linux flash.
Because I am used to develop in Windows environment I might choose the surface. I really love Linux but as I progress in my (jet many, but not enough) languages I might stay at windows.
I wouldn't choose any HP or Lenovo laptop any more, only bad experience.
What do you guys think? Any other opinions?
Edit: I want to use it for:
- Java Application Development
- C#/C Development
- Server Development
- Game Development
- Network Adminstration
- Server Administration
- Some Random Stuff6
Okay guys, after sleeping it over I decided that I didn't need to dump my entire stack of Java/mySQL and instead just slow the hell down on my development time. I'm going from Udemy to a book to help me be a better dev and this is a night and day difference as my book breaks every bit apart and explains it in a lot more depth than having a video walk me through it. What I wouldn't do without Amazon's Kindle service I tell ya...:)
Today I'm starting the project over, but this time breaking it down and going at better pace. Thanks for all the advice guys. :)
...I'm going to need a lot of Jack Daniels for this project aren't I?5
Guys I have something important to ask you, more experienced devs here. I am at the end of my Bachelors Degree and currently applying for jobs with Java. I have always been really interested in C++, but thought it was too hard and all of that. Just now after two years of developing desktop/web apps with Java/Spring i feel I am ready to go low level. Do you think I should focus on Java or go with C++?
Any oppinion is welcome and thanks in advance ;)6
we all know how much we love opensource. I've finally made one of my projects public on Github. Basically, it was easy to answer questions on SO by making my project public as it became easy to refer. I just wanted suggestions from you guys regarding how to make my project reach interested people? I thought this is a goof platform but obviously, it is meant to rant. Anyways, here's the link to my project : https://github.com/caffeinator13/...
Please give suggestions to make it better and get some contributions. I just want to feel comfortable in the opensource enviroment. Thanks guys! :)
PS: I'd like to share a pic of my stressball but i'm afraid, it is in a real bad shape as my folks used it to play cricket in the room. :/9
I'm in my final year of high school, 17 years old, hoping to go to TAFE to do a coding course. I've done some HTML, CSS and Java at school and I only really know the basics of them all. I've been learning python in my free time and fuck man is it confusing. I love coding but it's so confusing at times, I really need some words of encouragement. Thanks guys :)4
So, guys, I'm wondering if someone can help me wkth this thing. I'm sorta newish to programming and was searching up different kinds of typing. Basically what I found was:
Strong: Variables are explicitly declared, can only be changed to values of that type
Weak: Variables are implicitly typed, can accept any value of any type.
However, upon searching static and dynamic, it says the same things for dynamic and weak, and for static and strong. Can anyone help me by telling me the dofference between these (if you even understood this post 😅)
Hello ranters,I'm a php developer ... I've been removed out of projects twice now due to the fact that database guys would say "nah we don't think php can handle this ,go learn a new language if you want to be in this team " ,then I thought to myself if I could learn another language. .Net came to my mind because the project is going to be for an Enterprise.
Which programming language do you think is the best for an Enterprise software? Thanks
EDIT: They want it in a web version so we could easily push out API's for other platforms like Android apps.12
Hi guys. Finally cleared up my time. Well not really but I wanna do something else cause I've been depressed af lately so I wanna try stuff I enjoyed.
Anyway. Last time I got quite a few from here but anyone need help with design/styling of projects? Wanna boost portfolio. Can use sketch or directly code in the styling for you.
For free. Though I wouldn't pizza money haha.
Let me know if you have/need anything
Heys guys, so I made this little Chrome extension that shows you news feed from blogs and websites (of your choice) in your new tab page. Ya know, so you don't have to go to any specific website or app or anything. So, give it a spin maybe?
Its called Blink: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...
PS: Sorry if you think this is spam, just wanted to share it.. Its free and open source..2
question for the hardware guys.
How can I run a brushless motor without a ESC ? like a CD-Rom brushless motor.
Can I do it with an arduino + h-bridge or maybe an ULN2003A??
Hey beautiful devs, can anybody tell me which linux distro is good for developers. I kinda decided for Arch but I still wanna know what guys would suggest. Thanks :)4
Hey guys! I'm moving to France next year to study, but I'll starve if I don't get a job :p And maybe it'd be difficult to get one when I get there. Hence, what would you recommend to do? Is there any place online you could recommend to get a job? (I know PHP, JS but eager to start learning other languages). Thanks :)7
So... there are already a few sites, web apps and stuff related to Devrant out there.
Like the DevRant banner and stuff...
Can you please tell me/us about stuff what we already have and what people already made?
PS.: I'm needing a project urgently, I'll be making a DevRant portal today with all the stuff you say here, even if it's just for me. need the distraction.
some Html, PHP, CSS, and Bulma, didn't finish a project like this yet, it's time.
Thanks for your support so far guys.12
I'm fairly new to front-end web development and loving it. Currently I'm working with CSS and JS (along with jQuery). However, I feel lost for I don't really know where to apply the skills. Could anyone suggest some front-end projects I can take on to test my understanding of the concepts and challenge my skills? Thanks guys13
As you have seen this week again we have a problem with data imports from <tool 1> and <tool 2>. Clearly the existing setup is not working. We are now encouraging more and more people from the project to start using our portal and we need a stable and up to date environment.
Can we have a call please to discuss the following topics:
1. Portal data integrity
3. Project Communication
4. Development efficiency
<Drama Queen PM>1
Hello guys, anyone knows some good sources to get into the SAP universe? Really want to learn SAP stuff like HANA but I didn‘t found a good ‚start from zero‘-source.
Would be happy to get some refs. :)
I have a dream of working in the IT industry(especially programming) in the United States. Do you guys have tips or suggestions for this? I am currently pursuing a computer science degree in Europe.
Thanks a lot already.6
do u know a simple and well designed program, that's suitable for a presentation about design? I am explaining UX, UI, IA and IxD and I need a simple example to show my class the components of a program that represent these.
Thanks a lot :)6
Anybody in game industry? For me currently I am digging into some bullshit our smartest artists created, some guys just wrote their name in the commit log without any useful information, OK, OK, I know who you are already, please don't tell me your stupid name again thanks#YOURACCOUNTISYOURNAME!!!🙈🙉🙊
Hey guys, I'm looking for a good pc game to buy (fps, single player and online multiplayer) and I'm considering pre-ordering battlefield 5 since it seems very promising, but it won't be out until 20/11 so if you know any good games please let me know, thanks!12
Advice wanted! !rant
Guys i started web dev about two years ago on windows but i want to switch to linux. I thought of using elementary os, ubuntu or arch. What would you recommend?
Also how do you do your setup then? Dualboot or in a vm? I want to use docker to set up my infrastructure if possible.
Also i mainly use InteliJ for dev.
Thanks in advance!
Also i love devRant!18
Need some opinions, what error reporting tool do you guys use? I used bugsnag before. Now I found a bunch of them I can't seem to decide which one to go for. Thanks in advance 😣😣2
I just got a new laptop and wanted to dual boot Linux on it.
Everything seemed fine until I realized the laptop had UEFI. I always used easyBCD but this won't work sadly. MS blocked some features.
What boot loader do you guys use for dual booting Linux that works with UEFI?
Thanks in advance!15
Guys am working on a personal project involving the dev community and wanted to share this survey with you : https://goo.gl/forms/...
@dfox if this is inappropriate for devRant please take it down.
Hey guys, asking for web devs, which JS framework did you use for your portfolio? I'll have to learn one of these but don't know what could be nice for everyday use..
Thanks in advance2
I'm a senior computer science student at a big ten university graduating in December. I'm thrilled to have been offered a full time software engineer 1 position on a QA team. I just wanted to ask, I ultimately want to be a software dev, would taking this QA position make that more difficult in any way? Or is it a great place to start? Because it is a software engineer position, but not directly doing software development.
Thanks for your input!3
Spent all afternoon trying to make CI work for my own personal website, trying out a new concept, that I call Frontend only, it restores, builds, but fails to deploy with connection dropped after a few seconds... For all of the Gods and Saints of deployment please grant me stable connections, thanks

Hey guys, not a rant but a question.
I want to make an app for android and this is gonna be the first one. Which language would you suggest and any other suggestions?
Guys, What are the perks and downsides of adding Access-Control-Allow-Origin : * (or something)? Can anyone explain.
3D Printer problems
So, I have a problem with my printer.
The fan that cools the printed model (fan1) isn't working... and everything seems fine.
What should I do to find out what the problem is?
For PHP guys here. Are you using Laradock, Vessel or custom/vanilla docker written from scratch? I'm currently using Laradock.
What are the pros and cons? Thanks! 😀2
Greetings guys and gals.
I found an old laptop of mine and since I don't really use it anymore, I want to try "the linux" on it.
My question is, what's a nice linux distribution to make the windows transition smoother.
I have a vps so I'm not afraid to use the terminal.
I just want vscode and a browser on it, no gaming, no video editing, nothing fancy.
Sending E-Mail to Software Developer, had to attach a number of documents, so i think, best i put them into an archive, lets just use 7Zip cause its two clicks for me.
Instant E-Mail back:
Thanks for your E-Mail, unfortunatly we cannot accept the .7z file. Please speak with out IT guy about the issue.
REALLY!? YOU GUYS SELL SOFTWARE AND YOU DONT KNOW WHAT 7Z IS ?!?!
I send a zip file in return without speaking to anyone.8

But on my mac, it takes like two minutes and refresh like 20 sec. Our front end with macs has same problem. Have anyone expirience with docker and mac? ❤

Hi guys, I'm looking for a used Chromebook on eBay to install Linux mint. Budget under $150. Is there any model recommend? Is 2G memory enough? Many thanks.5
Been studying web dev for about 10 months everyday and night and wanted to know when people usually look for they’re first job? I live in Asia right now and would be willing to move back to California or anywhere in the world to get started. What would you guys do freelance, search for jobs overseas, go to Silicon Valley “I’m from the Bay Area” but have been overseas for the past 6 years. Let me know thanks devs1
Guys me and my school mate(s) recently released an app onto Play and I'd love it if you'd go check it out :) the link is https://play.google.com/store/apps/... if hyperlinks work on here (it's called Blip otherwise, by Swappt) and I'd love whatever feedback you have. The github is https://github.com/Swappt/blip-app, if you want to mess around and have a look at the source. Thanks :)7
So guys , there is no other place to ask this question.
I'm thinking about making a Python wrapper for the devrant API . There isn't much info on the web.
I'm really stuck guys , how do I go about doing it .
I need your help guys...My company wants to save money on buying Photoshop licence and use Gimp instead. We only need some of the features, and most of them are achievable with Gimp so that's not a problem. The issue is that the tool that is mostly used is the Ruler with it's Straghten option. Doing it with Rotate tool in Gimp is a huge pain in the ass and it decreases productivity. Is there any way to get this Ruler>Straighten like combo in Gimp? Or any other tool?
Hey guys, can you do me a big favor by voting on a project of my classmates and I.
If you go to icapresents.nl (yes the website is Dutch but Google translate can translate the page for you) then scroll down you'd have to click Selecteer profiel (select profile) and then select HBO-ICT propedeuse. There will be one project called EenmaalAndermaal. To view the project click Bekijk Project (view project) and here is the button Stem op dit project (vote for this project).
Warning, you might get a prompt asking you to log in to Facebook (nothing will be shared on your profile!) but when you do this you might get redirected back to the main page without the vote being registered. Bad design.
Thanks in advance2
Any suggestions on how you learn a new language? If I would ask that myself, I would try to make projects as much as possible. So the question might be revised to "Do you have any suggestions what projects can I work on while learning a new language/framework?" specifically python and django :D
Any suggestions will do. Thanks guys!3
I'll try to make this short:D
I'm a CS student atm. at 3 sem.
And I just wanted to ask you guys, how did you improve back when you started developing?
The assignments we get at school never really challenge me, so I've spent a lot of time doing "programming ideas"(from sub reddits and ideabag2) on the side.
But I feel like I've hit a brick wall, as in, I don't think I learn super much from them anymore.
Which is why I've tried to "help" others, but when I go onto stack overflow or try to help on open source projects, I understand nothing and I'm definitely not able to help with anything. (They're all about things/subjects I've never heard of before)
So my question is mostly, how did you guys get from where I am today, to where you are today?
Thanks for even reading this.
(I know java, android dev, and Js/node.js)
(Sry about the English ;D)7
Hi guys and gals!
Currently in the search for a good management team for solo freelancing projects. I've used Trello before but am looking for something that maybe tracks time spent on tasks for hourly charge and is more defined to web development/design.
If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance! Keep on keeping on!4
how to stop a Android phone from changing IPs
Don't know why, sometimes my Android server changes IPs (without restart), that fucks the exit of services....
Like, don't know why, http always works even when IP changes
but WebDav stops working.... I mean, I can use inside the network but I want to access it from the outside.
Alright, shit happend during presentation, but thanks to frech humour (don't ask why) and a good examination I got the better mark! Thank you guys for listening to my story
Hey guys, I am very keen to learn iOS Development. I looked up online and got most of what I needed for the development. But the main problem is, I don't have a Mac. And my machine isn't souped up for running a Hackintosh. So is there anyway I can do iOS development on Windows?
Also, someone told me I should go for Hybrid App Dev. I looked it up and tried it out, but had only one question. How do I integrate a Data Source in them?
Thanks in advance.5
Hey guys! In Laravel, what is the difference between the methods "url()" and "route()"?? I use "url()" for css and JS routes and "route()" for my own routes. Is it good what i'm doing? Or it's a bad practice? Thanks!3
A source-control branching model, where developers collaborate on code in a single branch called ‘trunk’ *, resist any pressure to create other long-lived development branches by employing documented techniques. They therefore avoid merge hell, do not break the build, and live happily ever after.
// Thanks guys, after such a nice introduction I now feel obligated to read the whole damn thing
Hi, guys. I'm looking to get into Android development (Xamarin) and to build some simple apps first.
What I have in mind is something trivia-like, with a hosted database (can't find any free & reliable public APIs).
Do you know of any free downloadable databases on the topics of:
http://www.usabledatabases.com/ seemed promising, but it's not free (or I couldn't find any free DBs, as they don't have a price filter).
Thanks in advance!
so I offered to help a guy with his startup idea which is in the making for a year at least. (A telemetry data collection device, mind you). It's an unpaid internship with no strings attached, no contract, mind you.
I am nowhere near the programming pro like most of you guys here, so that's what I want to focus on improving.
First thing he tells me to do is a market research on competitors.... I thought I left that bullshit behind when I left business school..
If I want to work without getting paid, I'd rather stay at home and learn c++ and opencl, and work on the MSc thesis full time, thanks.
Do you think it's the right thing to do or should I give it time?10
You guys, what commonly fontFamily you are using in making an android app? I'm not good in looking a good font, hoping all of you help me. Thanks very much.3
¡¡Good news!! Finally solved the image upload problem with lumen and angular. It happens that, even the $request in Lumen was "empty" it turned out that the actual image file was a binary object inside the Lumen $request variable that didn't render because the browser, postman and everything I tried couldn't understand it (maybe something to do with the Content-Type). I figured out and solved it, now I can easily save, delete and even modify images when are in the server side.
One more thing... My code was fine the whole time, l mean like, 3 days of finding a big that doesn't exists haha
Everyday we learn some new si*t
For those who don't know what I'm talking about, the story is right here:
PS: thanks guys, I really appreciate your comments: @champion01 @itsdaniel0 @dfox @joetj3
Guys, need your help. What are some interview question for junior QA? Aaand, what do I need to review? Thanks a looooot!3
@dfox has the "swipe" right to go back to the rant feed always been there? It was the only feature I was missing and I just accidentally triggered it. Anyway. Thanks for the work you guys have done on the app.
Guys, need your ideas/advice.
I myself am out of ideas here. The 'problem': I started learning React 5-6 weeks ago, made news app, weather app and... that's it. What else should be in every react dev portfolio? Todo app doesn't count. Too easy. ;)

Guys what are all the ways to install a os onto a laptop? I want to install some form of linux (haven't decided which distro yet, but I want linux), but my cheap shitty laptop freezes when I try to install the os. I've tried using a usb (live boot), cd and even SD card. What I mean by freezing, is everytime I run from the usb/cd/sd card, a black screen with a white underscore appears, but the underscore is frozen and nothing else happens. Is this fixable or not?
Hey guys, I have a few questions about being a full stack developer, if anyone can help me with that (on WhatsApp, Telegram or other apps) please tell me. Thanks in advance.

Many thanks! o/6
